Thoughts on Crosshair for the character ask game?
Hello there anon! Thanks for the ask :)
Okay, if you’ve read much of my blog at all you can tell that I could talk about Crosshair for hours, so I will try to keep this in check 😉
Crosshair
one aspect about them i love - his facial expressions. I actually want to make a post just of screenshots of the micro expressions his face can go through in just a few seconds. At the end of the Ryloth arc in season 1, I took screenshots of about an 8 second span of animation, and I had about 40 screenshots of the changes his face went through, each one slightly different than the next.  His words, his actions and his facial expressions all constantly contradict each other and I think his facial expressions often give away his inner emotions more than he might realize. He’s just a grumpy, annoyed cat who hisses and spits at everyone but secretly wants them in the room with him at all times and I just love it.
one aspect i wish more people understood about them - HE IS EMOTIONALLY COMPLEX, COMPLICATED, AND TRAUMATIZED. Okay I think we all mostly know this but he is not a villain, an asshole, or a narcissist. He is a very sensitive, traumatized, and intelligent man who gets so caught up in his own pain and running from it (until The Outpost) that he ends up hurting himself and everyone around him in his attempts to make sense of the world. I am so grateful to the writers for how complex and nuanced and powerful they have made his character–we all are fascinated by him for a reason, and it’s not because he’s just a typical antagonist or anti-hero. I am still haunted by the fact that he tells Omega “you’ll never be one of them” in season 1, and then “I’m not them” in season 3, talking about the rest of the Batch. What occurred when he was younger, what hurts and sensitivities does he hold, that has made him feel separate even from his own brothers/the only family he’s ever known? Some of that was the chip and the trauma talking but there has to be more to it than that bc the rest of the Batch members never seem to feel that level of separation.
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have about this character - I think amongst other things that Crosshair has some form of RSD (Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria). The ways that he builds up walls around himself, hurts others before they can hurt him, and takes almost everything too personally and as a sign of rejection (thinking especially of his conversations with Hunter at the end of season 1) seems very similar to RSD experiences. The intensity and whiplash of the emotions he goes through, again hearkening back to his facial expressions, shows that he is very deeply feeling, not cold and impassive like he pretends to be. Also, I think his eyesight is extremely sensitive to light, and when he pulls his face away from the explosion seen through his helmet in The Outpost, I think that the helmet visor plus his extended visor magnified the explosion so much that his eyes couldn’t handle the flash of light. That was both physically painful to watch and also “oh wow they actually included that headcanon detail!”
one character i love seeing them interact with - Wrecker. I miss their droid kill count competitions and Wrecker shoving Lula in Crosshair’s face (and him being very annoyed but not stopping him) SO MUCH. Wrecker has always immediately thought the best of him and wants to forgive him and just have his brother back.
one character i wish they would interact with/interact with more - Omega. The fact that we almost got his first mention of her name in The Tipping Point was just further confirmation for me that he does actually care about her if he would just let himself. I’m really hoping that their interactions in season 3 help bring him a little relief from his self-loathing and despair, and I hope that they form a bond as strong as what Omega has with her other brothers (CrossDad all day long please). I also hope that Emerie turns out to be an ally and not an antagonist to both of them in their attempts to stay alive/escape.
one (or more) headcanon(s) i have that involve them and one other character - I really love the headcanons especially in modern AUs that Tech and Crosshair are twins. That doesn’t match my headcanons that Crosshair is the youngest and that Tech is second-oldest (CT-9902), but I think they are very much two sides of a similar coin even in canon. Physically they are both tall and slender. Mentally they are both very perceptive and intelligent but in different ways and focus on different purposes in life. They are both very awkward/standoffish around others. Morally they both have very strong opinions on what is right and wrong/what paths they should follow, but again to different ends (Tech’s being a strong objective morality, Crosshair’s seeming to be a more personal, turbulent morality). They also both seemed to be the least parental towards Omega at first but we know how much Tech stepped into a strong bond with her, and I am confident that Crosshair can do the same. And finally, of course, Tech seems to be the most impacted by Crosshair leaving, and is the first to bring him up multiple times in season 2, the first to suggest rescuing him, and appears to have always been checking to see if there was a way to find out where he was. He obviously loves him dearly and I am going to be heartbroken if he never gets to see Crosshair come home.

Danganronpa 3 Despair arc episode 7
Thonks
Oh so we're just gonna jump immediately into last time, which was Junko running into Ryota.
And interrogating him now.
Never thought I'd here Junko Enoshima utter the word weeb and yet here we are.
Rude, animators deserve more recognition and stuff.
The irony of an anime character going on a rant about how important anime is.
To another anime character who doesn't like anime.
The fourth wall is taking some hits this episode.
Wasn't expecting him to than show her his project.
And than for to cry.
I love how they had to include a *This is her personal opinion* note as Junko wacks down a bunch of manga with a bat.
Mukuro crying face was legitimately terrifying tho.
Oh no, don't tell Junko how to influence anyone's brains with subliminal messaging.
... Or with anything.
I thought this was just a bit but nope... This is bad... Oh no.
I'm gonna be saying that a lot aren't I.
This is what I get for wondering what Ryota was doing during all of this, because while apart of the 77th class, he's not apart of the killing game or the Remnants.
But he's part of the Future Foundation.
I am concerned about the casual conversation about using media to brainwash people and than Ryota ends it with making the world a better place.
And her smile, oh he is so gonna be a tool for destruction.
Aaannnd Gundam is doing poses with a bear.
Love to see it.
Nagito's still suspended... And was in a plane crash and ended up a deserted island.
Typical Nagito things.
.... Didn't need to see him showering in a waterfall...
And of course straight after that is Teruteru putting a banana through a donut.
I gotta hand it to these guys they really embodied high schoolers.
Gundam saying silence you perverts as a bear chomps on their hands, the best response.
And Ryota's been missing for a week.
I'm sure Junko had nothing to do with that.
Ugh Juzo's here.
Just when I had my hopes up I wouldn't have to deal with him for a while.
But fine, what you gotta say.
... Oh 20 staff members have gone missing... Nevermind that is important.
Juzo, you are the dangerous people. Maybe not specifically these dangerous people, but you do be dangerous.
.... Chisa why would you wanna lay your life down for Munakata?
Literally.... Why?
"Don't let emotions infer with the job you're here to do."
Those are bold words for you of all people to utter, Mr I damn near beat Hajime into a coma.
Get off you're high horse.
Ryota I get what you mean by the new equipment is great but you're always alone, how are you more alone here?
What cos Twogami ain't here to make sure your still alive?
Rude.
Mukuro casually kidnapping Mikan.
Typical day for both of them.
Given how Mikan... Talks about Junko... I am not looking forward to this.
Junko's analyse face is disturbing.
So she was able to, on the second watch figure out how the brainwashing works... Wow.
No yeah, ultimate analyst makes sense.
Oh look it's Izuru.
And she asked him out.
I don't ship it.
OH! I should've seen that coming but nope.
Just bodies hitting the ground, and the bloods pink again.
I guess that would be her version of a date, and Junko's the one doing the killing.
Which is somehow more terrifying
She's usually the woman in the chair, but seeing Junko be the one actively killing and torturing people is creepy.
I dunno if I've mentioned it before but I like Izuru's voice because it very much sounds like if someone had their soul drained out.
And it sounds similar to Hajime's but also not.
... Oh... Oh no...
There's kids in the classroom....and she wants to show Izuru despair on a bigger scale.
The student council too... Not just some random students.
Wait.
I had heard there were other killing games, or at the very least the 78th class wasn't the first.
So this is the first killing game... Ohh that is good.
Man the guy telling everyone to calm sounds so much like Ishimaru in both the sound of his voice and his words.
This is so much scarier than any killing game shown in the games... Holyshit Mukuro just shot a student and went you don't fall in line and do the same you'll end up like her.
No crazy executions.
No class trial.
No Monokuma.
This is terrifying.
Well at least we still have the motive videos.
Mukuro singing while this goes on is just yeah sure.
And it just keeps going... Fuck.
Also it can't be a coincidence that some of these kids loosely resemble the 78th class
I love that the chainsaw says Jason Freddy.
And the fact the last one manager to graze Izuru's cheek.
Typical hopes peak wanting to cover it up, even though Jin does want to say something.
Huh I wonder if that guy stuck with Kirigiri in the present because her father asked him to keep an eye on her if something happened to him.
Junko exposing the whole Kamakura project and the student council massacre.
And using Izuru as the scapegoat.
Clever.
So now the reserve course is coming for the main school.
"Where did you go Hinata?"
Oh erm... You don't wanna know Chiaki.
Trust me on that.

So does anyone else ever get the urge to rant about how much they love two seconds of a video game or is it just me? Spoilers for Danganronpa 2 and also the Despair Arc anime.
This moment is some truly incredible storytelling, honestly. It’s one quick moment and it marks for the audience and Hajime the transition from the happy times with friends to the much darker killing game. Since what’s being killed in the scene is really just a stuffed animal this is the first blood we see in the whole game. It’s blood from the protagonist who has been hurt when he wasn’t even the one being targeted. Hajime isn’t just being paranoid anymore. This game dangerous now, it is serious and dark now, and this moment shows all of that so simply.
Tumblr media
This scene has great rewatch value too, especially with how it mirrors this moment from the anime. Hajime and Izuru both got caught off guard and shot in the same place, but it means such different things to both of them.
For Izuru this is maybe one of the times he gets the closest to feeling hope. Someone hurt him. He was surprised by something. There is now a chance that his life could actually have some excitement. There’s a way for him to end some of his boredom.
For Hajime on the other hand, this is a moment of true despair. His worst fear has been realized. The second he let his guard down the island stopped being safe. Overall I’d say Hajime isn’t a super expressive character, he has a general look of seriousness and annoyance, and I think this might be one of the moments he looks the most scared in the entire game.
Hajime and Izuru share a body, they get the same injuries, yet they couldn’t be more different.
Wow that’s a whole lot of symbolism for one moment, too bad it doesn’t mean much in universe right? Wrong, at least, maybe. This one is a little bit more me theorizing so please don’t attack me fellow fans of specifically these two seconds of Danganronpa.
Junko watched Izuru get shot and knew who Hajime was. She knew throughout the whole game that Hajime was the mastermind and its kind of implied Hajime was the protagonist of the weird sort of video game she created in the computer world. She could also control a lot of what happened in the computer world and Monokuma.
I wonder if she shot him on purpose. It seems like something she would do. Shoot him in the exact spot Izuru had been hurt, maybe to taunt him, to watch him get scared and laugh as he’s unable to remember when this had happened before. Or maybe to test him since Hajime was the only one there she had never really met and she didn’t know how different he was from Izuru yet. Maybe both.
That’s all. Basically, it’s really good storytelling in both the smaller story and the larger overarching story. Plus it’s just fun to watch bad things happen Hajime.

She'd only seen the Gates perhaps once in her life before this. They reached far into the sky and were blanketed in clouds. She rested aboard her captain's ship, a feeling of languor threatening to overtake her. Eying the tall woman who claimed command of the Spiteful Harlot she sat up. A den den mushi in her hands was spouting some nonsense she could barely make out. "WHAT DO YOU MEAN WHITEBEARD IS DEAD?!" and at those words Qwynn froze. Edward Newgate, the strongest human in the entire damn world was dead. How? The zoan user instantly shifted into her leopard form and leaped from her place sleeping on the prow of the boat. --- SPOILER WARNING! CONTENT WARNING: Mass character death, brutality and abuse. *The droning voice of Sengoku in the background.* We finally reach the penultimate Arc of the Summit War Saga. This arc was hands down one of the most painful to watch. Not because it was dragging at times, and oh did it drag. But because we all learned that this big rescue mission was nothing but tragedy. I knew what was going to happen, I spoiled One Piece all the time for myself. Hate me if you want, but I like staying updated on the Manga as my mental illness. That being said I watch the show in spurts between work and commitments to my patreon work. So, wow, lets do this, I'm not breaking this one down to bits of the arc. This is going to be a pure bad good and ugly. I want to do it this way because this was the hardest hitting Arc I've seen since Enies Lobby. The Ugly One thing about Shounen ANime is they really like to drag out fights with a lot of twists and what not. I say this as someone who grew up on shows like Yu-Gi-Oh and OG Dragonball Z. This story was great, it added a lot of nice twists and bits but there were a few low points for me. It doesn't dragon on a Naruto Level. I can't put my finger on it, but a lot of ways I really didn't think it should have taken Luffy more than five episodes to get out of the exit ring. This part of the battle is perhaps the most where I got frustrated watching. It really started as the push for the harbor was about midway through. The story where we finally get Squard's stab into Newgate. Watching him do so, learning more about the backstory of Ace and much more was heartening. But there are a few episodes that break down to pretty much "Keep going get going" and then only a little bit of progress is made. This entire Arc is about a losing war, and yet, damn it ground hard into me. And this is the only critique in this regard I can think of! So I was going to do a bad, but fuck it, I already did that. The Good I simp for this show. It calls me like the Jezabelle she is! Now lets talk about what this Arc did so damn well, it made me fucking cry. We already know Oda is kind of against killing people off. He let Crocodile live for FFS. There are even points where it was obvious that people like Moria should have been dead, but nope they are still alive. Hell, its also been revealed that perhaps a certain giant is still alive! Spoilers aside, this entire thing is pretty fucking filled with despair. An entire story about the despair created by the fucking World Government. Yeah, lets not ignore that the world of One Piece is rand by a genocidal government okay with wiping out entire nations and islands for convenience. So watching them murder not only a bunch of pirates, but lying to get them to betray each other makes sense. Sure, we can easily view the Marines as good guys if we already didn't know better. What we see really is a group of people trying to save on eo fhteir own. Attempting to use overwhelming odds but all they ace is three fucking tyrannical gods, and their pragmatic Commander. The Whitebeard Pirate Alliance fall in droves as they are cut down by the Warlords and the Admirals. The Vice Admirals join the fray and as Little Oars dies to save his friends they use his fucking body to climb over. This is some seriously dark shit. All the while we watch as Ace is reminded of how his entire life all he's good at is getting other killed. DAMN ODA! Squard's betrayal in of itself was another great ploy by Sakazu aka Akainu, a truly tyrannical figure. This shows that the Marines as the sword arm of the World Nobles is not above fomenting mutiny. Yeah, it's a good strategy, and honestly it just reminds us that these are not good people. They have NO scruples. Whitebeards death was just so damn disquieting. He just stood there as he finally lost his strength. Then to have his devil fruit powers stolen by that bastard Teach made it even worse. Teach truly is a fucking near Xanatos level villain. This guy has played Newgate SINCE he joined and sacrificed former friends to get what he wanted. All of this culminates into the final death of Ace, and damn, I knew it was coming. I knew it was going to make me cry, yet by the Nine it tore into me. ACE and Luffy are members of ASL, and three kids who grew up in a world that despised them. It it weren't for Crocodile (yes I follow the Croco-mom theory) hadn't saved his boy Luffy would be dead. Gay Canon I will say that this entire episode is laden with fucking masc characters so I can't spin a a lesbian scene here. Honestly, I would headcanon Luffy as a trans masc and Ace as his adopted brother still. Spin up Hancock as his love interest and there we go. TBH with how tall Hancock is I'm reminded of T4T couple memes I see now and then. Now, let's talk about adopted dads. Newgate actually TREATS his suborinates as his kids and grandkids. He treats them well and defends them with all his might. This can easily be seen with cultish as we're talking about a macho-man figure who gets everyone to call him pops. But easily there is nothing in that manner. Honestly in this story I see Marco's desperation here to save Ace as a man trying to save his husband. Marco and Ace FIT as a couple and I really do like that as an angle. For sapphic ships we are still kind of at a loss. The only Warlord Present who can remotely being seen as mingender or "as a womxn" is Hancock. Everyone other major character minus perhaps two vice admirals are androgender spectrum. Now, a rare fic story featuring Hancock and Hina maybe? I mean, there's not a lot of optinos from this storyline! Though, I think a story with Vivi and Hina would also be another good option for an aftermath rare pair set up. Conclusion Wow, yeah, this was a post long time coming and to be honest I've been in a fairly deep funk overwhelmed by real life. Heh, anyways, lets sit back and discuss some final thoughts. The Marineford Arc is a solid conclusion to the Summit War Arc. I really dislike the dub translation of "War of the Best" but whatever. I watch the dub because I get distracted and write and I can't always be reading subtitles. (I use to be a purist, but fucking ADHD and other issues messed it up). Back to the story, this epic battle specifically brought us what we wanted. The despair felt by pirates and the rebels against the might of the Marines. Without the Gura Gura no Mi, the battle would have been harder for everyone. YES, the Division Commanders are powerful. But we are talking about the fucking Warlords of the Sea. One of which is a total meglomaniac who is powerful enough to spider sling across clouds for fun. Aokiji bikes across water because he's so precise with his power. This was a last hurrah for the legends of Whitebeardss Era. Sure Kaido and Big Mom were his mates, but the old man truly was one of the Greats. What we see here is a foolish attempt by the WG to quash the Supernovas. To kick them while they are down and prevent the rise of another Pirate King. Someone capable of challenging the false gods of the Celestial Dragons and put Im on the backfoot. This wasn't going to happen, but what I witnessed was the not just a last ditch effort to save on of their own. I watched a generation's hope of freedom get crushed as villains like Teach, Kaido and Big Mom existed off in the distance. I mean Teach stole a fucking fruit and now has shit that is just plot plate armor level crazy. But yeah, as we go into the New World I'm itching for watching a few Admirals getting a beat down. Hottakes:
Holy fucking shit Marineford is a ridiculous space. I keep forgetting how big Marine ships are as well. Those things Dwarf most of the ships from any of the early arcs.
Are paddle wheel boats a standard? I'v seen three so far, the Kuja Pirate's ship, the one Momonga had and Whitebeard's ace in the hole.
Whitebeard is an interesting figure, I think he should have jumped in. Oars death felt so needless, it just shows that people loved Ace. And this was a means to "punish" him for just existing.
I really just hate Akainu, he's such an asshole.
Aokiji is beyond OP, he's a devil fruit user but he can free sea water. That's a ridiculous cold point to achieve plus averting a common devil fruit weakness.
Well fuck Blackeard for being able to steal fuck powers.

hello hello it's me again! your secret santa! 🎅🏻 hope you have been doing good on since last time marilyn? cool! we are alike i too adore talking and talking about my fav characters i just adore them so much. shower them with all our love and attention it's all they deserve!! and when we have someone with the same tastes aah it's even better! god!! akaza is one of my fav characters of kny along with uzui! such a great character and his backstory was so sad i really love seeing how they all became demons, what did happen to them to be in despair of wanting to have powers to survive and advange on something. akaza was so unlucky with his life.. (well they all were mostly haha) he deserved so much better but when he died it was so touching seeing him with the girl he loved most it's always so touching when we see those scenes of them going back and feeling relieved and in peace. the second season with uzui was amazingly well done just thinking of the effects ufotable is able to create on their animes is just the cherry on top of the cake! i'm excited to see what they will bring and show us on the next seasons, that fight of akaza with tomioka and tanjirou will be sick! thank you so much for the brief summary of the anime yu yu hakusho, it seems so interesting and fun! i will definetely put on my to wacth list and see it when i have more time. i didn't know it was the same author that made hunter x hunter!! xD WOW! i was amazed when i saw your reply! is it one of your fav animes as well? i still haven't watched it too people say it's super cool too. by the way could you tell my about your fav colors, as well of your fav quotes of giyuu and of other of your fav characters? ^^ i want to start on your gift! have a great day/night marilyn! take care! 🥰🥰
welcome back and thankyou for your lovely message, secret santa!!😀😊
akaza's arc was truly bittersweet~ when his wife decided to go to hell with him was the most heartfelt moment that happened and was a perfect end to him considering that his life as a human was utter hell and his life as a demon was also a struggle as he did gain power but didn’t really have a purpose except murder. i hope that akaza could rest in peace truly he deserves it! 🥺… tengen is also one of my favourite characters!!!! 🥰 not only is he the most funniest and handsome god of festivals but he is also a fearsome shinobi with flamboyance haha i love him sm!!!! 💓 the animation did a wonderful job and i think it exceeded the first season ~~
i love hunter x hunter ☺️ a really good animanga. my favourite characters are clearly killua and gon, their friendship is so wholesome and adorable!!! 💜
purple is my absolute favourite colour but blue is also like my aesthetic 💜💙 some of my favourite quotes from giyuu are, 1) from the first chapter/ episode quotes to tanjiro: “feel the rage. the powerful pure rage of not being able to forgive will become your unswerving drive to take action!” along with “do not let others hold the right to decide if you live or die” 2) when giyuu found his resolve to fight as the water hashira by protecting tanjiro: “never again will i let my family and friends die before my eyes. i will save tanjiro the same way i was saved." 3) his monologue against fighting akaza “for the first time in a long while, i’m up against a strong opponent who can overwhelm me and i realize that my senses have been sharply honed in a short time. senses that were closed off to me have been awakened and dragged out to the place where my strong opponent stands. now i understand how the intense struggle to survive increases in one's skills." 4) last but not least (lol) to shinobu: “i am not hated”
some of my other favourite characters from other animes are inuyasha (inuyasha), lelouch vi britannia (code geass) akemi homura (puella magi madoka magica) zenin maki (jjk) and many others but those are the ones from the top of my head. including the naruto and yyh characters i mentioned earlier… i just started to watch csm and i really like power already, she left a huge impression, i love her personality! 🥰
i wish you a truly fantastic rest of the week and stay safe, stay warm (it’s been freezing on my end lol), until next time, secret santa~! ! ! 🥰✌️

2020 Anime Retrospective
With the end of the year here, and all the anime that came with it now behind us, I feel like looking back and reminiscing on it. So, following the style of ANN's own yearly retrospectives, may I present my 2020 anime in review! Enjoy.
Tumblr media
Best of the year: Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken
This is actually not the first time Yuasa and his crew of, let's be honest, visionaries have rolled something special out right at the beginning of the year in some weird power move against everything else that has to follow it. They did it back in 2018 with Devilman Crybaby, and then they hit us this year with Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken.     You ever have one of those shows where you're just constantly in awe of everything it does? Where you never found yourself chasing merch or hunting after content based off it online, but you consistently find yourself thinking about it? Yeah, that's what Eizouken did to my brain after I watched it. It was such an earnest love letter to anime and anime production, to animation in general, that I couldn't help but get sucked into its imagination and enthusiasm. The way it was able to so perfectly illustrate that pure, boundless, childlike joy that one can derive from the simple act of creating, I'd be lying if I didn't say that it had a powerful effect on my own desire to continue creating. (Corny as that sounds, it's true.) The sheer amount of love it contains, and the equal amount it puts out into the world make it so I know I am going to be thinking about it again and again for a long long time.
Tumblr media
Runner-up: Akudama Drive
I don't know if it's really quite a matter of my two favorites being opposites, but there are definitely some pretty sharp stylistic and tonal differences between my two top shows this year. Akudama Drive's cocaine-fueled bender of an intro episode made it very clear what it's intentions were and what it wanted us to be prepared for. That doesn't mean I had ANY idea of where it was headed narratively, but I did know I was in for one hell of a ride. And it delivered is spades on that promise.     The twists and turns, no matter how insane, illogical, or steeped in tropes they were, were all such a colorful energetic spectacle that it would be hard to hold anything against the series. Every character was such a force that I didn't really consider any of them a weak point. Yeah, some of them were more or less cardboard cut-outs of antagonistic elements, but when the cardboard cutout looks REALLY FREAKING COOL, it's hard to get too torn up over the details. It's a show that oozes style and knew EXACTLY what it wanted to do and be, and I have to respect that.
Tumblr media
Runner-up-up: Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun
The next few entries aren't really in any sort of order, I actually found it near impossible to sort anything below my top two. Hanako-kun however does hold a bit of a special place for me though because, at least from a stylistic standpoint, it hits so many of my buttons. Just visually this show is the exact kind of thing my younger self would have latched onto immediately, even before knowing anything about the actual content. I suppose not much has really changed though.     I'm absolutely in love with the animation style of Hanako-kun, and I got really lucky that there is an interesting story and delightful cast of characters underneath that visual splendor. Along with the sharp lines, intense colors, and soft characters, I'm also a sucker for contemporary supernatural mysteries. That's a fancy way of saying one of my favorite shows as a kid was The X-files, but both make the point pretty well. The world of Hanako-kun has a lot to offer, and I can only hope it gets a second season so we can continue to delve into it's beautiful and terrifying mysteries.

Runner-up-up: Kaguya-sama: Love is War Season 2
I know a lot of people will be talking about this one when it comes to “Best of” lists. I know a lot of people were talking about the first season when it reminded us just how funny anime can be back in 2018. Absurd high school comedies (Is that a genre?) could definitely be considered my favorite. Hell, of my top five favorite anime of all time, THREE of them fall under that category. So believe me when I say Kaguya-sama absolutely deserves the deluge of praise it receives. For what describing something as “laugh out loud” is worth, this show had me constantly needing to pause it just so I could finish laughing at whatever ludicrously funny misfortune had just befallen it's cast of lovable morons.     The thing is though, Kaguya-sama understands that you can't just earn love and goodwill on laughs alone, there needs to be a beating heart at the center of all the shenanigans. And when this season had me actually cheering on and feeling sorry for Ishigami of all people, I knew that beating heart was present and accounted for. Look, the cast are all self-centered idiots, but I'll be damned if they aren't also my dear children who I delight in watching slowly grow and become slightly less self-centered idiots.
Tumblr media
Runner-up-up: Dorohedoro
When the Dorohedoro anime was first announced, a lot of my experience was watching a group of people online scream about how they were so pumped that it was finally getting an anime. I had never heard of it before, but the excitement was very real and tangible. And I gotta say, sometimes you need to believe the hype.     I've never been one to shirk a series just because it was CG animation, (Watch ID-0 dammit!) but Dorohedoro makes a strong case for why people shouldn't sleep on something based solely on it's animation. The dirty, grease-encrusted world of Hole is brought to life with plenty of flair and style that, I feel, the CG didn't hold back at all. What I had seen said was that for a long time Dorohedoro was kinda considered “unanimateable” but I think MAPPA did the iconic manga a fair amount of justice. Even if pulpy ultra-violence isn't normally your thing, I still highly recommend giving Dorohedoro a look, it might just end up being a hole worth going down.

Honorable Mention: Show By Rock!! Mashumairesh!!
I know what you're thinking, but hear me out. The first Show By Rock!! was definitely an indulgence for me. While not something I considered a high level series by any stretch: messy plotting, shallow characters, a weird isekai angle, a lackluster finale, and an even MORE lackluster second season, it still got is hooks into me with its sheer energy and fluffy charm. So despite the, as mentioned, rough second season, I was more than happy to check out the new series in the franchise. And boy was I glad I did.     Mashumairesh!! takes all the heart and sweetness that worked for the first series and dials it up. It then took a hard look at a lot of what DIDN'T work in the first series, and manages to fix most of the issues. Removing the isekai angle and the whole existential threat thing, and just letting the series be a “slice-of-life but in an electric animal filled music world” did wonders for the direction and consistency. Add to that more properly fleshed out characters, and you get a series that is far stronger than it's progenitor.     The next series, Show By Rock!! Stars!!, will be adding back the cast from the first series, and that could very well be a sign that it will be falling back into its old habits, but the presence of the Mahumairesh!! girls gives me hope that it might have a chance of staying the new, far better course.

Worst of the Year: Digimon Adventure:
This one really hurts to say. What hurt more was how quickly I knew what show I'd be electing for this position. One thing to clarify is that I would not nominate a series that I'd only watched one or two episodes of, that's just not fair. So the award was bound to go to something I had at least dedicated a decent amount of my time too. And in any other year this may have gone to something that was more my “least favorite” or had an ending that disappointed me. But unfortunately I have to be honest and sit here and tell you that the newest entry in the Digimon franchise was easily the worst thing I watched this year.      I have been a long time Digimon fan. Ever since I was but a wee lass watching the original Digimon Adventure premiere on Fox Kids at a family reunion, I have always considered the franchise a sort of cornerstone of my anime fandom. So please understand the excitement I had felt when I found out they were doing a full on remake of that flagship series. Imagine how absolutely pumped I was when the bombastic movie-like premiere of Digimon Adventure: wowed us with everything it delivered, and all the promises of what was to come. And then imagine my disappointment, my despair as the show devolved until it showed us what it really was during the finale of the Fake Tokyo arc.     I would call it a production meltdown, but considering the precedent that got set back in episode 10 during the already shaky Ultimate Evolution arc, has been so clearly informing everything up to the current episodes in the early 30s, I have to be honest with myself and admit: this is what we were going to get all along from day one.     All of the heart that had made the original series so endearing, despite its own flaws, just isn't present here. What you get here is just a non-stop (and I mean non-stop) string of barely related fights with poorly-defined stakes, or sometimes no real stakes at all. It's just one ugly set piece fight after another as the children chase after vaguely implied evils. I think the most damning thing is how much more I could say about just how much this series has let me down. Like I said, this one hurts.

Best Theme-Song of the Year: Night Running (BNA)
My opinion of BNA as a series is complex. But my opinion of its ED, Night Running, is simple: Its a god-damned bop! I could spend this whole section talking about the artistry of the ED animation itself, its fun and creative use of color, the slight variations for certain episodes, the focus on character, or the fact that it was done by an American animation team. I could even talk about the song's importance to the series as a whole and its place in the narrative. I won't though. The fact of the matter is that even without all that, I STILL probably would've picked Night Running as my best of the year because as a song it is just that much my jam. This is the kind of shit I could listen to on repeat for hours, days, weeks, and still keep coming back to it. Don't get me wrong, Ready To is a damn powerful and catchy tune that goes hard, but at the end of the day, I'm a sucker for a soulful pop tune like Night Running. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWTFfEnMCCc
Tumblr media
Best Character: Sayaka Kanamori
This was actually probably the hardest category for me to decide on. It was stuck hard between Eizoken's Kanamori and Akudama Drive's Doctor. I know those are a powerfully different pair in basically every way, but it was specifically for their startling differences that both characters stuck out to me so much. In the end though, it was the poignant rounding out of, and emotional hooks of Kanamori's character that let her triumph over her delightfully two-dimensional opposition.     Kanamori already had me from episode one. In a show that I wasn't really worried about the usual diversions of anime ingestion like picking a favorite character, Kanamori sealed herself as “Best-girl” from the word go. I have mad respect for a girl who knows what she wants, and has a clear idea of how she's going to go about getting it (See also: Doctor.) But Kanamori was more than a driving desire for success and money. Underneath her unstoppable ambition there was a very real, very relatable driving impetus. She stood apart, and yet still believably vulnerable and invested in the people she associated with. It was always a blast watching her suffer as the only thing keeping the more creative minds on track, and yet she was never reduced to a simple task master; her love and respect for her friends was always clearly visible. I could go on and on about how Kanamori is a nearly perfect character, but I hope I've said enough already without having to resort to senseless rambling.

Best Moment: Howan confesses her feeling to Himeko (Show By Rock!! Mashumairesh!!)
By the time episode six rolled around, Mashumairesh!! had already shown marked improvements over its progenitor in basically every area. Not only was the story in a better place by focusing on what had worked in the original series, (Ya know the BAND part of this show about bands) but the cast was also doing a good job of standing out from their seniors and feeling more equally rounded out. Where the original series had just kinda been the Cyan show with guest stars, I felt like I had an actual grip on all four of the main girls now.     There were however the usual issues that come with a cute-girls-doing-cute-things series, chief among them the “ambiguously gay member of the group who constantly reacts with clear romantic interest towards the main protagonist but the writing will never actually do anything with those feelings” trope. Retoree had spent the better part of the first two seasons fawning over Cyan only for nothing to come of it and, despite the increased focus on all of the girls this time around, it looked like we were going to get the same old song and dance with Himeko's feelings towards Howan.     But then the climax of episode six hit and, midst a really intense subplot about Himeko's abandonment complex, Howan comes out with a straight up love confession. And I kept waiting for the usual dead-ends these moments always seem to have. The “I love you! I love the girls too! I love the band!” Or a “I love being with you.” and the dreaded, “I love having you as my most precious friend.” But none of that happened. It was a full on heart-felt, “I love you, Himeko. I want to stay with you forever!” I'm just not used to getting that sort of straightforwardness from my silly little band shows, so I was shocked, but also completely overjoyed. And frankly the series just kept getting better from there.     The evolution of their relationship built off that moment, no dreaded resetting of the status quo. I daresay it was on the power of this moment alone that I wanted to include this series in my top five at all. If there was anything I would want other anime to take from Mashumairesh!! it's that it's okay to introduce radical changes to character relationships partway through a season, and it's okay to let characters unequivocally state their feelings for each other. People will respond positively to that earnestness, I promise.

Hello, Icarus! Please infodump to me about Danganronpa?
okay so! I had written out a whole thing but then tumblr deleted it! so that was fun! /s but now that I know what I'm going to write it's much easier, so that's good 😌
n e ways, I'm gonna do like a basic timeline w explanations and some other stuff that hopefully I'll remember once I start writing!! so let's go :D
a list of everything danganronpa in chronological order (not the order that you should play/watch the stuff in, I'll put that in the explanations)
Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School - Despair Arc (DR3) - second anime, watch along with the Future and Hope arcs after playing the first two games (and UDG if you want to). backstory for the cast of the second game.
Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (THH) - first main game, play first. also has an anime that's basically the same as the game, but since there's not enough time to put everything from the game into the anime I definitely recommend playing the game. high school students from a prestigious school trapped in said school are forced to play a killing game, hijinks ensue.
Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls (UDG) - third game, not main. play after playing the first two games. very different game mechanics from the main three, and widely considered not cannon by the fandom. I like it though, and it introduces a lot of really interesting characters along with giving a v underdeveloped character from the first game a lot more character development. it's not necessary to play it (though one of the characters plays a pretty big part in the third anime, so that would make more sense if you already knew her), but I think it's interesting and fun. there are also robot fights.
Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair (DR2 or SDR2) - second main game, play after playing the first game. same basic premise as the first game, except it's a different class (same school though) and this time they're on an island. even more hijinks and plot twists than the first game.
Super Danganronpa 2.5: Komaeda Nagito to Sekai no Hakaimono - (I could only find the Japanese title for this one, sorry 😔) kinda also part of the second anime? watch after playing the first two games (and UDG if you want) and watching DR3. character is woken up from a coma via overdramatic and overpowered other character.
Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School - Future and Hope Arcs (DR3) - second anime, watch along with the Despair arc after playing the first two games (and UDG if you want to). aftermath of the first two games.
Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony (DRV3) - third main game, fourth game in total. I don't actually know when it happens bc they're v secretive about everything, so I'm just putting it last. play last. same premise as the first two, the class is trapped in a school with a courtyard and a huge sort of dome around everything. peak hijinks, too many plot twists to count.
woo!! that's the timeline as I know it, hopefully I didn't miss anything. and I have managed to remember what else I was going to say, so let's move on to section two:
the mechanics of the games
danganronpa is, at its core, a glorified visual novel. every character has a certain amount of sprites for when they talk, as well as voice lines that aren't usually the exact text on the screen but fit the vibe of whatever they're saying. and as I've said before, there's quite a lot of talking. these games have more plot than should really be possible and most or all of it is done through dialogue. cutscenes and class trials are the only parts that are reliably fully voice acted, but there are a lot of those.
as for the parts that are less visual novel-y: you can walk around, and the settings are pretty much as 3d as the 2d-ish style of the game allows. you can also click on things, and sometimes clicking on stuff will get you monocoins, the currency of the game, which means you'll be able to buy presents for the characters!!
"now why do I need presents for the characters?" you ask. well, that's because you're given a certain amount of free time each game to hang out with characters you want to get to know better! the game's ending is fixed, so you won't change the course of the game by who you do or don't hang out with, but you can learn more about characters and become closer to them! giving them presents they like makes them like you more :D
and the most exciting part of danganronpa, what a lot of people play the games for, the true lure of the game.... the class trials!!
so these characters are in a killing game, right? basically, they're faced with a sort of lose-lose predicament: stay trapped in the school forever, or kill one of your classmates to "graduate". but it's not as simple as that, because in order to graduate, you can't be caught. and how do you determine whether or not a criminal has been found out? well, a trial of course!
enter the class trials. every student (barring dead or severely wounded ones) is required to participate in a kind of mock trial- except someone's really dead, and they need to find the murderer or they'll all die too.
(right, did I forget to mention that? only one person can graduate. getting out alive insures that none of your classmates get the luxury of doing the same.)
so, yeah. the class trials are a true fight for life on both sides, because who ever loses will be executed.
and they're really, really fun.
entirely voice acted! enough minigames that the list of them is probably longer than this entire post! the joy of solving the mystery! the... execution, right in front of everyone.
hey, it's a dark game. not like they're trying to hide that. and the executions aren't actually all that gory most of the time, but they're still very much there and onscreen. also as close to fully animated as the games ever get, which is pretty cool.
so how the class trials work is this:
there's a murder. dun dun duuuun. you investigate everywhere related to the murder to get "truth bullets", which are the reason you don't immediately fail at the trials. you don't have to remember all of them, they're all written down in your e-handbook. plus, the protagonists all seem to have really good memories.
time for the actual class trial!! Monokuma (asshole bear running the killing game) introduces everything, explains the rules. and everyone starts talking.
there are a lot of different parts to the class trial, but most of it is "nonstop debates". everyone talks one after the other, and you have to find inconsistencies and shoot the right "weak spot" with the right truth bullet. you refute the lie or mistake and everyone goes back to arguing normally.
there's also hangman's gambit (weird hangman to find a key word), multiple choice things (self-explanatory), and plenty of others.
near the end of the trial (or sometimes only a little over halfway in, it varies), the killer will.... kind of become obvious. there's a specific kind of change in behavior that's the mark of the murderer in these games, but I'm not sure how to describe it exactly. a lot of times there's an accent change, and in general they start acting much more erratic. since it's a trial, though, even after this presents itself you still have to prove your case beyond reasonable doubt.
and once it's become clear to the killer that they're backed into a corner, you have to do the "bullet time battle". it goes by different names in different games, but the basic mechanics are the same: you battle against a student (usually the killer, but not always) in a rhythm-based battle where you have to click to the rhythm to refute your opponent's statements. once you've dealt enough damage, you shoot the final piece of evidence, and that's the end of it.
the murderers react differently different times. sometimes they break down and confess. sometimes they keep denying it. sometimes, they're just calm. however they act, though, the end is the same. they are caught and punished accordingly.
but before that, there's one more thing to do. the closing argument.
your final task is to explain how the murder was committed, from idea to execution (look, a pun! see I can be funny too 😌). and you have to do it... as a manga.
you don't have to draw the whole thing yourself ofc- you just have to fill in the missing panels and then watch as the protagonist narrates it to the rest of the class.
and that's all for the class trial, not counting the long talks after every execution while still in the courtroom.
wow, this is getting...... really, really long. there's only one more thing I'm gonna add, and I promise it will be much shorter than the other two bc it is late and I am officially Incredibly Fucking Tired.
with no further ado, a very short part three:
my general impression of the game. its vibes or smth, I dunno this is just what i think about it
when I first heard of danganronpa, I thought it was a horror game. I can now assure you that it is not. thriller? maybe. debatable. but definitely not horror.
and despite its extremely dark premise, this game is not all doom and gloom. there's so much stuff about hope, and overcoming despair even when it seems impossible... it's not exactly a happy game, but there's a lot more of that in there than you'd probably expect.
all in all, I love this game. so much. it means a lot to me, and I think it's a really good game. thanks for letting me talk about it so much asdhfd :D

Couple weeks ago, I realized I never fully finished the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (since back then I watched them on DVDs and only got up to like episode 8ish) and I recently got pretty far just watching it day by day.
And so a couple of days ago, I was feeling nauseous and dizzy all day, so I decided to unwind at night and binge a few episodes of Suzumiya. I was so delirious that I thought the app was glitching at first before I realized what was happening. It was the episodes...
It was the Endless Eight.
Anyway, I haven’t felt such despair at watching an anime arc, but damn I loved the chaos. It was probably the delirium talking, but every time the episode started up with the endless summer, I was laughing with pained tears in my eyes.
Like. Wow. The audacity of Endless Eight. I can’t believe it. What a show. ✨

Warehouse of Prayers by Laura Kasischke
1.
It’s dark in here. Please, let me out.
2.
No, I hear him say. I want to show you. And to see it, you have to stay.
3.
And, O, I saw it then. So many prayers. Who could answer them all? And yet
what god would have the heart to toss them out?
4.
Yes, he says, I know. It terrifies. The silence, and the din. The tremendous weight of them. It defies
anything you might think or say
about sound about size.
But, yes, of course. Of course I’ve kept them all.
5.
“We had gone for a walk in the dark.
Of all things, I was deeply in love with my husband! Then
something silent I couldn’t see crept out of the darkness, and bit his hand.”
6.
The beauty of it. The great
beauty. The true beauty of it. The beauty beyond—
It’s
bitten me. I’m bleeding.
7.
In the dark one night you felt around for your blue scarf. Its blue diffusion. Its shameless would-be sky. But it was gone.
Gone, with your watch, and your wallet, and those cheap beads. How
strange to understand, so suddenly
that none of it was yours. Not
a snippet, not a glimpse, not a bit, not
even the dust that had gathered
Amishly on it for years.
8.
And the green lawn rolls, and the green lawn rolls to the foot of it all, to the foot of it all
telling the story of a world created by a god, who wanted to be loved but did not like to talk.
9.
“We predicted this. Something
strapped to the chest of a child. Light pouring up from holes in the ground. A fountain
run dry, and a mild-mannered man on a rampage in July.
Still, we were confused. We
thought we’d looked for this trouble everywhere, and
never found a thing. We
believed there’d be more warning, despite the many warnings. We
deeply believed a mistake had been made.”
10.
Then, in the morning, a mannequin sitting in the rain on the neighbor’s porch. The rain on the mannequin, like so many kisses bestowed upon a corpse.
11.
No. (He takes my hand. He opens a door.)
12.
Wow, I say. So this is all—
and this is the vault in which they’ve hoarded it.
All:
What is, what was, what will be—
added to in increments. (A skyful, a pocketful, a teaspoonful, a pinch.)
13.
And still, mostly vault.
14.
The blood and the bed. The basement full of blankets. The
freezer full of meat. We
all will rise again, and all be dignified.
The vein straight through the center
of the leaf. The woody stem of a rose. The dark suburban fruit of mulberries on the lawn.
We will rise over it all, and all of it will still be here when we are gone.
15.
Hello. It’s me, Eurydice. I want to tell you about his eyes: Stupid
hopeful windows. You
idiot, I said. All this resurrection business just to have your dumb love-glance sideswipe me dead.
16.
Her boy, in the war, the gate, left open, the field full of flowers, the day, so cloudless, she couldn’t help but see the mysterious sense and emptiness of it: As a child, he was so quiet, you could have drawn a circle
around it with a piece of chalk.
You could have taken a bus to the edge of that silence, and stepped off
onto a sidewalk, made of time, and walked
for years and years, all through his childhood and still kept walking.
17.
This is the illegible scroll
on which Orpheus’ reply was written.
This
is the book, thrown from the window.
A cough.
A broken telephone.
A few notes of a song.
18.
And a woman sobbing in a hospital gown, Not fair. Just this one body, and not even the body I wanted, and still it clings to me weeping when I have to leave. Not fair.
19.
“Eurydice? Eurydice? Are you there?”
20.
RSVP: She
will not be arriving by ship of by plane. No car door slamming. No
driver to be paid. She will not be walking. Neither shall she run. Thank you for asking, but she can’t come.
21.
Please, please, please, sweetheart,
pick up the fucking phone if you’re there
22.
“The Czar was killed on the spot, as
were the Empress and the Grand Duchess Olga, neither of whom could finish making the sign of the cross.
But the daughters
wore corsets
lined with jewels. For long moments the bullets, fired at their chests,
ricocheted around the room.”
23.
Please?
24.
One day I saw the divorcée take a letter from her ex-husband.           Briefly, his fingertips touched hers, and then she slipped the letter into her purse:
But, O, that purse, full of old pleasure, and that letter. Memory, like a dark hole full of feathers.
25.
“Lust, that goat in violets. Those violets like so much tenderness
scattered in the grass. Love,
that rusty chain dragging you home through your past.”
26.
A woman turns at church in her pew and tell me before the organ starts up, “I know a story about your house.”
27.
Oh? Yes?
28.
“In the forties, a farmer named Elmer Barow, in your kitchen, shot himself.”
29.
Oh, I thought, I know. I know. Time,
passing, all along— the hum of the cobwebs in the corners crocheting their intricate shrouds. The
dripping of the faucet. The blackened toast. Of
course, when we sat down at the table with our heads bowed, that
was him listening in on our prayers— Elmer
Barow with a rifle in his mouth.
30.
Always that
flash of desire, always
in the way (that
gray cat sleeping in the driveway, those
teenage girls bathing in a pond of bees)— that’s
what’s left of the freedom God had to make us, or remain free.
31.
Eurydice?
32.
In winter a woman I work with gets the idea that her hands are poisoned. She can’t touch anything anymore. She wears
gloves to bed, in case, in her sleep—
33.
No, E., of course, your hands aren’t poisoned. You cannot kill your children if you stroke their hair. You
know this, you know it.
34.
But, suddenly, gradually, myself—
everything I touch, there’s—
35.
There’s something wrong. (Not that. But something.) I
spend hours trying not to think about the something, but it’s
always there
in the shadowy tissue, in the silvery microscopic gloom, the lazy fluid slip of it, which,
released by love, billows loosely around the cerebral cortex—
a poisoned flume.
36.
Then—?
37.
“And then the day is over, and the—”
38.
And the day is over.
And in the dark I hear God say,
Laura, go ahead and pray.
39.
Okay.
40.
Okay. I— Okay. I—
Dear God, I—
offer up this prayer of dryer lint and hair.
41.
Orpheus here in a cellar made of glass. In it, with me, a blizzard of small black words. I
am sending this message to you from the world, but “This is a message from the world” is all it says.
42.
“Oh, to the teeth, sweetness is the medium, but the message is decay. Like
the soul, a hunch, wrapped in disintegration. Sweater
wool, skin cells, carpet fibers, ash, a gray
breeze: Virus,
and pollen, and ourselves
blown to breathing pieces.”
43.
And then at the petting zoo I knew
animal terror for the first time. Animal
despair: The trembling of the lamb under my trembling hand.
44.
Suddenly, God answers me!
I am made of the same thing you are, after all, and you
are made of me:
Some darkness, a supplication, a moral silence breezing
over the glassy stubble in a vacant field.
45.
“And let us not forget the petty prayers. The insatiable hunger of seagulls. The sunset
in the blood, and those
birds turning
in on themselves. Crying, reeling, happiest hungry. Let us be
you amphetamines! they scream. The market
full of fruit out of season. The locked
door of the embassy. The high
gate surrounding spring:
Please, God, I want all of it for me.”
46.
To: Orpheus Fr: Eurydice Re: Death
The babble. The cold, teeming, intangible hotel.
47.
God, do your hear that? That
bit of stitching in the wind? It unravels when you listen. Listen.
48.
The Debt Birds screeching, Insufficient! Someone shoveling snow onto a fire. A figure in a black suit swinging a lantern through the dark
in arcs, coming closer, and closer.
And my mother standing by the lilac
(the lilac, which is the suburb’s lyric poem
about death) talking
to a man she never met. I
overhear him say, Whatever
crazy sorrow saith.
49.
“No one was crying, no one was bleeding, but the mail had been dumped in the street, and
someone’s husband a few blocks over was shouting loudly about accountability.
Shadows stuffed into envelopes— as when the forest creeps to the edge of the freeway, perfectly tamed, finally revealed,
and the wild illegal animals people keep as pets,
escape, are seen.”
50.
Jesus Christ, this stuff is everywhere!
51.
Excuse me.
I couldn’t help but overhear your prayer...
52.
“What the bloody hell is this? Someone must have written down every word ever said, then
shredded every word ever written.”
53.
O, honey, O, lovely, O, please. It’s me,
Orpheaus, again, Eurydice.
54.
“Okay, now what we need here is a warehouse, or an abyss. Which one of you guys can get on this—
ASAP?”
55.
Like
trying to hold fire. Like
trying to hold perfume. Like
wearing fog to work. Like
stoppering a bottleful of light—
trying to talk to God.
56.
“Hello. Yeah. It’s me. Is he in? We’ve got a major mess on our           hands.”
57.
“Shit. Shit. Is he ever in?”
58.
Like stoppering a bottleful of light. Like wearing fog to work. Like trying to hold perfume. Like
trying to hold fire—
to make the simplest goddamned contact with—
59.
O, wait, look after all— that
warehouse, that
abyss, and
a beautiful naked stranger diligently trying
to ladle the oceans into it.

Magia Rapport, Day 5:
August 27, 2020: What character do you identify with the most? Why is that? Do you have a favorite quote or moment from them?
I’ve thought so hard about this one and it’s really difficult to answer, I feel there are so many fragmented pieces of myself and it’s hard to put that into one character. Also, there are just so many!
Ultimately, though I wanted to narrow it down to one single character, I feel the best answer would be a weird, complicated blend of two (wow great job I know have I had one answer for any of these prompts so far?)
Tumblr media
(She’s so beautiful, please love her).
First off is Sayaka Miki. If I was to be honest with myself, I’d probably accept I’m basically only Sayaka Miki, but can’t bring myself to accept how sappy I am. I appreciate her character arc, and, without going too much into it, can see parallels to it and my life (very edgy of me I know). I suppose that I’m not Sayaka at the end of the anime right now, but I feel that’s more due to the fact I was and managed to crawl my way out then I’ve never been there. Life sucks. Which brings me to character number two, as this is where I divulge most from Sayaka I feel. I too wish for happy and noble endings, want to protect my friends, would probably sacrifice too much for proving my morals right, but when my world has been turned upside down from various unfortunate events I didn’t give up but instead became...
Tumblr media
Kyoko! Kyaku! My fav, I’d die for her. I feel maybe, if I were to choose Kyoko over Sayaka in this, I’d say I combined the earliest stages of Kyoko as a magical girl, with Kyoko in Another Story, if that makes any sense. I’m not as self serving or self centered as she is, I think the guilt would be too strong, but I’m not as naive as Sayaka is or as Kyoko was. Nor have I yet gone so far down the hole of cynicism and despair as to turn into a witch, or whatever the real world equivalent is. So I felt the need to throw Kyoko in there. Also because I love her.
This has been a long and probably tmi post, but oh well. I’m glad I came to the conclusion I was just my favorite parts of my favorite ship. Very on brand...
My favorite moments for each character? For Sayaka I like at the very end of the Rebellion movie when she confronts Homura. Very badass. For Kyoko it’s every moment, but I do like when she goes off with Homura to test whether or not they’re in a labyrinth in Rebellion (I love that movie flaws and all). Of course my favorite moments of both of them is the entirety of Episode 9 (even when watching meduka meguca I tear up like the soft hearted sot I am) and the fight together in Rebellion. This has devolved into a shipping post. Thank you for your time.

KS [1] Thanks for the swift reply! I'd like to go private but I don't have a tumblr account, honestly don't feel like doing one if you don't mind. If you don't feel like talking about snk anymore, I understand! If it only causes you bitterness, why bother? I still do it just because it doesn't and it's going to end soon anyway. Regarding your reply, yeah I too meant that the bird was Eren's conscience or connection to nature and not him literally, I just didn't have enough space XD [...]
Hiii...it’s been almost 3 weeks I am so sorry. But between real life being absolute torture, and finding respite in stuff different from snk, I completely forgot to come back to this. I really do not enjoy talking about snk, so I was really overwhelmed by your messages (that I didn’t even receive in full, and that’s one of the reasons why I’d prefer to move the conversation elsewhere - but I don't really wanna have conversations about snk atm anyway. ‘cause you see, I agree 100% with you, it sounds like I wrote these messages myself, but at the end of the day they just remind me of how much I’ve come to dislike the series...so, not really productive, or healthy for my mindset right now (i repeat, real life is just...trying to kill me apparently)).
Anyway, so I’ll just reply quickly to your messages, because you spent a lot of time typing them up, but yeah...this is not the best place or moment to have such long discussions about snk, I believe.
[2] I was wondering more on the implications to that, because thinking about it, I remembered many scenes in the anime's past seasons with birds flying, and it got me thinking if it really was all decided from the start? Maybe by some superior entity? I hope like you that little Ymir isn't just a plot device and has a role to play together with Zeke. I hope this isn't the last we see from Eren pov as well becuase those shots of little him saying 'this scenery' really worried me. [...]
I was thinking birds, besides a white one possibly meaning hope and a black one usually connected to death, are part of nature, just like all things connected through paths. Titans are connected to nature, there has been a lot of discussion about this in fandom for years, so yeah. Also, hope = freedom & life, death = despair. It all plays on the dichotomy that is Eren: he doesn’t want to kill but he doesn’t want to die either. I wonder if one of the morals of the story will be that death is just part of a natural cycle, hence you can be free in death too (but I hate this, because it’s really negative if applied to SnK).
Re-reading some stuff also made me hopeful about this not being the last of Eren’s pov, as far as explanations go. Like, there is clearly more (Liberio, for example, the WHT, etc). As for child!Eren, I think he is totally disconnected from reality, hence he doesn’t see what’s happening, and if he is, he’s also trying to convince himself that, like 19!Eren said in chapter 121, as a child he would take freedom away from people who tried to take his freedom away with little to no remorse - of course, it isn’t the case for adult!Eren, as we saw multiple times.
[3] I just hope we get to see more from him, like War Hammer titan and King Fritz memories, and there's more with Historia as well. I don't really care about shipping so I don't mind if we get EH or if Eren is the father, at least it would make sense for the pregnancy thing to be this dragged out. I just found the Armin/Annie conversation really baffling? What with the timing and the tone of the chapter? What was the point of that? To make us feel sad for Armin if Annie dies? [...]
I feel a couple, in particular a couple with Eren, would be too out of the blue and ruin Eren’s character (and the other party of the pair). Besides, romance has never been part of Eren’s character arc. If it’s just to follow the shonen manga’s trend of the protagonist ending up with [insert female character], then this will finally put snk in the trash bin for me.
I was watching a japanese youtuber’s analysis about the latest chapter and he said something very interesting about the Annie/Armin scene: just like we have child!Eren being happy vs adult!Eren despairing, their little talk repeated the same 2 povs: childhood vs adulthood. Armin’s ““declaration of love”” felt really childish and, as Annie rightfully pointed out, was that really the time for it? People are getting crushed and Armin thinks about such innocents stuff? You could say it’s the same dichotomy of hope - despair, beautiful - cruel, innocence - what Armin later admits: he is not innocent, he also killed people and children in cold blood, ever since the beginning of the story.
I personally don’t think either of them will die, but as the youtuber pointed out, usually these romantic overtones bring one of the pair to their death (I was pleased he brought up as an example yumihisu ahah), so I get why you might speculate as such.
[4] And Eren's pov got me really confused. I kind of understand what the author was going for and I agree with your analysys about his inner conflict and desperation but to me it came out of nowhere? Like you said, it doesn't really make sense for his character. This is what we get by having his thoughts hidden for so long though. At the start of the manga we got those moments where we could see he was somewhat twisted but then he grew out of it and was pretty normal, and now all of a sudden[..]
I think the inner conflict has been there, always throughout the story and in Eren as well, but for me, the problem lies elsewhere, in the sense that there is still no connection (or good enough transition) between “i don’t want to kill people but since i don't wanna die i guess i’ll kill them”. We’re talking about Eren, who wanted to die because people died because of him...who got so angry about being unjustly threatened with death, who stood up against bullies, against all sorts of injustice because he strongly believes in the intrinsic right of being free (WHICH IS THE RIGHT TO BE ALIVE). I get it that the other side wants them dead, but it still feels stupid that he would convince himself to kill the innocent majority, suddenly refusing half of what he has always believed in. If Isayama is going for “hey look, isn’t this tragic? What despair pushes people to do?” like UGH it’s just so annoying, because WE KNOW, snk is ALL about that, but what bothers me in this case, in particular, is, if Eren gets no redemption at all, then fuck off @ this story. See, I’m getting angry.
[5] he has like regressed to his childhood self? If he really hates doing all this, why does he do it? And I think you're right about Eren being demonized by the narrative: the writer made possible only 2 options and forced Eren to choose the rumbling and to him to be the psycho final villain, what with all those exaggerated expressions and shadows to draw him. If he was going with that from the start he should have done it constantly throughout the manga. And I won't even talk about [...]
And yes, the point is Eren changed throughout the story!!! For god’s sake!! Then all that progression was just so that Eren had a more nuanced view of the world so that he could suffer for this choice in particular? Wow, I didn’t know I was reading Tokyo Ghoul...... /s
[6] the predetermination stuff. Did Eren really surrender to the future he saw? Is he really just there in his titan sleeping and wallowing? LOL If Armin turns out to be the hero who can change the future... bleargh. I probably dislike the alliance as much as I do because the narrative is so biased in favour of them. I put my hope in Zeke for that! Please! Let him be the key if Eren is defeated! On the other hand I think it's not so obvious that he will lose as well. on that point, [...]
This is the last one I got, I’m sorry. Anyway, idk if it’s predetermined, or just like, the moment you think of something, the future changes. That would explain how Eren blames himself for this future: only because he dared think of this, then it happened. In any case, I doubt Armin ends up being the hero, I think it’ll be a group effort...remember Isayama was impressed by GotG’s ending....
Finally, Zeke, my lovely bitch, where are you??!?!?!?
He’s late to the party like a true queen.

How I would have adapted Cats for a movie
So first off the hybrid live action and animation is the WORST choice for this movie. Cats is a spectacle play at its core. The audience can basically forgive everything that’s odd about it cause they’re watching people doing some insane dancing and stunts. The options are
1- live action with makeup and costumes like the play only with a better budget. This works for spectacle in the “Hey that’s cool looking dance” or “wow look at that makeup.” kind of way   2- full animation on a sliding scale of realistic to anthro I’d go somewhere in the middle. The spectacle here being the animation on display go real hardcore, do some really cool stuff with the medium.
Going with the cgi on live action takes away from BOTH no one is really impressed by what people are doing cause well cgi can enhance it making it feel less impressive and anything done animation wise is limited due the constraints of a human body (it’s why rotoscoping isn’t really done)
Now while I think the better choice is animation I’d sadly have to go with live action using makeup and costumes as for whatever reason animation is still “kids stuff” and not an art form over here (not bitter at all)
So I think the idea of making Victoria the white cat an audience surrogate was a good choice. How they implemented it by making her a focus character was the wrong one. Cats is an ensemble play their is no main character, there’s characters of varying importance but no main. When you get down to it the plot is a bunch of cats hang together one night for a special event there’s no real arc it’s a slice of life piece at most. So yes to a character new to all this to explain to them rather than directly to the audience like the play. No to making her have a journey.
I would also cut/shorten and re order a LOT of the songs for pacing reasons. Most of the songs do not need to be as long as they are the length is primarily to show off the dancers in the play. Release the full songs with the celebrities in cd after or whatever. This change would allow the cast to breath and talk to give context between songs
In MY version I’d start with Victoria but not by having her thrown out. Have her in a house that’s clearly just been moved into and her looking out to see many cats all going in one direction and being confused/curious she leaves the house and meets up with a group. I’d have the group be Munkustrap, Demeter (I could rant about her being a non entity in the movie but won’t), Alonzo, Jellylorum and one other cat maybe Bill Bailey or Cassandra , for reasons I’ll explain later. (And I realize these names mean nothing haha) They tell her it’s the ball asking if she’s a Jellicle cat and her asking what that is. Thus the song starts as the cats make their way to the junkyard excitedly all saying what it means to be a Jellicle.
Then I’d have Munkustrap take center stage singing about what’s to come and trying to help the others as they prepare the junkyard and have Victoria introduced to the shy Quaxo. As things begin to settle and Munkustrap tries to get the cats settled Rum Tum Tugger appears disrupting everything with his song. His fun is stopped when old Deuteronomy appears causing all the cats to go quite in respect and that song begins with Munkustrap then goes duet with Rum Tum Tugger.
Deuteronomy notices the new cat and approaches her welcoming her to the tribe (cause they’re cats its that easy). Then reprise of the Jellicle song as the ball begins big dance number lots of energy and fun dancing and little character moments. Then it stops we’d pan to Victoria who’s confused hearing all the hissing and is pulled back by Quaxo, Grizabella makes her first appearance.
The song about her is sung and Victoria noticeably wants to reach out to her but is stopped. Grizabella leaves and Munkustrap refocuses everyone reminding them why they are here to make the choice the group I mentioned before all stand beside him. Victoria asks about the choice and Quaxo explains saying each of the heads makes a nomination but Deuteronomy chooses he also expresses his desire to show his talents in magic and be noticed. Rum Tum Tugger interrupts by saying something like you’ll never be noticed sitting in the shadows or something.
Now this is a bit of a departure as Munkustrap is typically the one to narrate all the songs but I think this serves to help round the cast out and add some character as each showcase what they feel is impressive. So Munkustrap starts by nominating Jennyanydots and her song begins
Another change would be a scene change for each nomination showing them in their setting, the implication being the narrators singing is bringing the tale to life.
Next would be Bustopher Jones by Alonzo or Bill Bailey. Then Demeter would stop the fun going tense and shouting Macvity! They all run and hide but Victoria in her curiosity leaves her hiding place early and looks finding Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer rifling the ball. The song would be much shorter than normal the older cats cutting them off and chastising them. While old Deuteronomy sings reminding them all of the importance of the night and choice. As Grizabella looks on from a distance.
Next comes Alonzo or Cassandra’s choice Skimbleshanks. Then Jellylorum’s choice Gus the theater cat his song is different from the others however in that they do his old play and as it goes on the more real it becomes, the play starting with the cats in make shift costumes and props from garbage but as it goes on they’re really in costumes and such.
All the cats applaud his performance and begin to dance once more when Grizabella appears again this time however Victoria follows her as she walks away watching as she tries to dance and sings “Memory”. Victoria is stopped from helping by a saddened Deuteronomy who brings her back, unknown to her and the rest Macavity takes Deuteronomy and replaces him. The ball continues as they all discuss who it will be. When Demeter once more shouts Macavity! Munkustrap tries to calm her and Victoria asks who he is. She begins the Macavity song.
Now if Taylor NEEEDS to be a femme fatale we have Demeter singing her part as a warning but Bombalurina is singing like it’s not a big deal and telling everyone not to worry her side winning out and boom trap.
BUT I wouldn’t do that keep Bombalurina as big sis material. Her part would be placating though as Deuteronomy, Macavity in disguise, follows doing the same.
Either way  Demeter’s senses are right and when he’s placating them all she lunges revealing his disguise then he tries to take her too and fight breaks out.
When Macavity escapes he shouts “you’d have an easier time conjuring the cat back than finding him” They are left licking their wounds in despair.
Then Victoria pushes Quaxo saying “can’t you do magic?” He shyly shakes his head when Rum Tum Tugger jumps in and says “Him no! Now the magical Mr. Mistoffelees he could.” and winks to him, the pair scurry off as Rum Tum Tugger begins the song to the unimpressed crowd and they reappear dressed as magician and assistant starting slow as Quaxo gains confidence and we have Victoria showcase her dancing, once they all start cheering him on and the music picks up Deuteronomy appears confused but happy as everyone rejoices. Rum Tum Tugger gives Quaxo a pat on the back and Victoria hugs him.
Deuteronomy and Munkustrap calm them all again singing of the choice when Victoria notices Grizabella. I got two ideas here
1 Victoria herself nominates Grizabella risking her new place by singing memory with her  2 Victoria convinces Demeter to do so as she hadn’t made a nomination (in the play Demeter is often sympathetic to Grizabella) she sings while Victoria dances with her
Either way Deuteronomy lets Victoria know it’s ok to touch her welcoming her back and the cats embrace her knowing the choice was made. They sing her off, as she approaches the light she asks Deuteronomy what’s on the other side? The response is “happiness” she smiles a bright light takes the screen and they all rejoice in tears. Victoria sits with Deuteronomy who recounts the nights events saying she will make a great Jellicle cat, then pans to the sun rising and the cats retuning home.
And thats how i’d do it.
We get all the main songs, chances for everyone to show off a bit, a fairly straightforward plot but with a satisfying end, lots of chances for fun cinematography and would make an easier viewing experience. I think the biggest problem with the movie is they tried to make something nonsensical make sense and to give a traditional structure to a play that didnt have one and it just doesnt work.
(Oh also in my version Munkustrap and Demeter are blatantly a couple and are always doing cute shit in the background cause fuck you they’re adorable!)
