What a joy and an honor to have loved Richonne's epic love story as hard as we could while we could. 🥹
Richonne means so very much to me and always will. To say their story has impacted my life for the better would honestly be an understatement. Rick and Michonne and their journey together from season 3 to TOWL played a part in keeping me going because life gets hard but the love captured between these characters is such an inspiring light that is exquisite and powerful and worth sticking around to behold.
And while 'it feels like it's ending'…it’s like Michonne said - they don’t die and neither does the love we have for them. We’ll be able to cherish Richonne and every single breathtakingly beautiful moment they gave us always. Richonne are the ones who live, the ones who love like no other, and the ones who will eternally hold a special place in my life.
This one-of-a-kind, out-of-this-world, moving beyond-words love story between profound soulmates Rick and Michonne Grimes - two of the greatest characters in media brought to life by the phenomenal Danai Gurira and Andrew Lincoln, two of the greatest actors in the craft - it lives on forever. And for that, I’m truly thankful. 🤍
Rick and Michonne got their happy ending with their precious children. 😭 They won. We won. 🙌🏽🎉
Tumblr media
Also! In honor of that deleted picnic scene, (which I would have loved to see make the final cut) I just thought I'd share my little headcanon ending scene. A few days before the towl finale, I had this vision of a Grimes Family picnic moment being the final shot of the show, but of course, my vision includes a Carl cameo to complete the Grimes Family moment. This is what I had written down and imagine as a day for their family now that they're back together as they're meant to be:
Rick and Michonne have another Family Fun Day picnic with their kids. There’s this calm quiet moment where Judith is snuggled up to Michonne happily reading the book her parents brought home for her on the blanket, RJ is resting with Rick’s arm around him, Michonne is nestled by Rick’s side, and then Rick looks out and sees essentially the spirit of Carl standing from afar. Rick and his son share this warm smile as Carl gives a proud nod signaling this is everything he’s wanted for his dad - to feel safe and happy with their family just like Carl wrote to Rick in his letter.
And then Michonne looks at Rick and asks, “You see something?” And Rick just looks in Michonne’s eyes, smiles at her and says a content, “Yeah” before kissing her - finally seeing and experiencing the family he thought he’d lost for good but they’re all with him now. And then it ends with Richonne doing their signature thing of holding hands while enjoying this hard-earned and much-deserved day of peace with their family.  🥰
That, along with the abundance of golden moments we actually got within this miniseries and the main show, is how I'll forever remember my beloved Richonne and their Grimes family. Resilient love personified. It's been an unforgettable journey and I'm grateful for every part of it. Thank you, Andy & Danai. Thank you, Rick and Michonne. Long Live Richonne. 👑

As the end credits appeared on the screen you felt Henry shift a bit so he could look at you.
After your make-out session you decided to watch the movie he suggested and tried your best to keep your hands to yourselves. Besides some light touching and subtle stroking you both behaved quite well. During the movie you repositioned yourself so you could curl up on his chest while he wrapped his arm around you.
He cleared his throat as his eyes searched your face. “What do you think? Did you like it?”
You looked back at him and nodded, “I did, you picked a good one.”
He smiled and softly stroked an invisible pattern on your upper arm with his index finger. But after a few seconds his expression suddenly became more serious and his smile faded.
“Would you like to stay tonight?” He asked and swallowed while awaiting your response. You pressed your lips together and tilted your head.
Stay tonight? But.. why? Was it just so you could - as Jenny would say - pound another round? Why would it be more than that? How would it be more? Even though you had a nice conversation in the bath earlier you still just met and didn’t know each other that well. And besides, he would leave in just one month so it wouldn’t be like you had loads of time to get to know each other.
So did that mean that he just wanted you for sex? And if he did, would you mind? Apart from the fact that you had mind blowing sex, could there be more? Was that something you wanted? Not to be ungrateful for the time you’ve spent together but you were also realistic. Even though you had this massive crush on him and your head in the clouds you still had your feet on the ground and you wanted to be sure to stay this way. The last thing you wanted was to catch feelings and end up with a broken heart. All you fancied was to just have fun and enjoy one another as long as possible, no strings attached. You weren’t opposed to the idea of spending the upcoming month together especially since he transcended your sexual desires.  You furrowed your brows and opened your mouth but the words in your head were so tangled up that nothing came out. Henry noticed and his expression softened.
“Look, you don’t have to if you don’t want to. The last thing I want is that you feel obliged to stay.”
You nodded. “I appreciate you saying that,” he mirrored your nod and waited for you to continue. “But I just want to be clear about-“ you waved your hands between the two of you, “whatever this is. It's no secret that I have a crush on you but it was all just a hook-up to begin with. If I’m being honest and realistic I don’t expect anything from you, that’s why I left last time.”
You paused and took a deep breath. Henry kept holding your gaze.
“Let me tell you what I think Joanne,” he started and stopped his expedition on your skin. "Besides the fact that you make me feel like a hormonal horny teenager again I just want you to know that I do like you and something about you intrigues me. But to be very clear about this- I don’t expect anything from you either.”
You bit your tongue as you let the words sink in. I do like you. Even though you were flattered you kept reminding yourself to not get ahead of this. This was the real world. And this wasn’t a girl-meets-hot-actor-crush-and-they-lived-happily-ever-after story.
“How about we make a deal?” He asked and you tilted your head.
“A deal?”
“A deal.” He replied firmly as you sat up straight.
“Okay, what did you have in mind?” You asked.
He cleared his throat as he straightened his back. “It’s clear that we like each other, right?”
You nodded. “Right.”
“And we both like each others company,” he paused for a moment and a smirk started to form on his face. “And we both like having sex with each other, right?”
“Right.” You said and bit your lip as the flashbacks of your wild and sensual time together ran through your mind.
“Wait let me rephrase that since ‘like’ doesn’t quite cover it. We both are hungry for the touch of the other, right?”
You licked your lips and hummed. “I guess you can also say ‘starved’.”
Henry grinned wickedly and slowly leaned in. “Starved for sure.”
Your pulse quickened as the space between you got smaller and the tension bigger. Suddenly Henry’s words about feeling like a hormonal teenager ran through your mind and you couldn’t agree more. Somehow he set you aflame with just his gaze, your skin suddenly grew taught and a sense of hunger flooded your veins. No not an hunger, you were starving. Skin starved to be touched by him.
Your panting increased as his hands glided over the duvet between you. A shudder crept over your spine as his warm palms touched your exposed knees.
“So Joanne,” his voice made you snap out of your thoughts. “Let’s enjoy the time we have together. No expectations or obligations.”
You took a deep breath. Somehow a small weight was lifted from your shoulders as he shared the same thoughts and you replied. “No feelings, no strings attached, just sex.”
His eyes darkened as a deep growl rumbled from his chest. “Deal.”
“Deal.” As soon as the word left your lips Henry had lurched forward, grabbed you by the edge of your robe and hauled you on his lap. Your hands cradled his face and pulled him into a searing kiss. His stubble scrapped against your palms as you placed your knees on either side of his broad waist.
The position caused you to lower your pelvis onto his and felt how his erection pressed against you. The only barrier between you was his robe since yours hang loosely around your body, the thick fabric unfastened when he had tugged you against him.
Henry pushed the robe down, exposing your naked body. But quickly his colossal hands were on you and followed the curve of your waist, moving upwards and squeezed your breasts.
You felt his hot breath on your skin as he took your nipple in his mouth. Sucking on the sensitive bud while you started to grind your hips, drawing a curse from him. You placed your hands on top of his and squeezed, indicating to increase his grip. Wanting more, wanting it harder and wanting him closer.
“Fuck, you’re so gorgeous.” He said. Hearing his deep voice and feeling his hardened cock had your train of thoughts derailing.
You placed your hands on his chest and pushed him back roughly. A surprised gasp left his lips as his darkened eyes widened. Quickly a smirk appeared on his face. Oh he definitely liked it.
Digging your nails into the skin of his chest made him hiss. You leaned forward, your lips touching the shell of his ear as you put on a soft and sensual voice. “I am going to tell you something and you will do as I say, agreed?”
Even though you loved to be submissive there was also something exciting about being the dominant one. You may not have that much experience in this role but now you really felt like it and wondered if Henry would like it too.
Henry grunted and hoarsely vocalized his consent. “Yes.”
“Good,” you answered and grabbed his wrists and placed them above his head. “Keep ‘em here.”
His nostrils flared and a muscle in his jaw tensed but he did as you told. You started to kiss his jaw softly, descending to the side of his neck and placed another one there. Pressing your lips against his delicate skin again and again.
After a few kisses you sank your teeth into his skin, not too harsh but with enough pressure that made him hiss. You scraped your teeth down his neck and varied between kissing, biting and sucking. As you moved further down you reached his sternum. While pressing another kiss you looked up at him from underneath your lashes.
Henry’s lustful eyes followed you closely. Soft pants escaped his lips as his chest rose and fell.
You grasped the sides of his robe and pushed them aside so you could continue your descend. Dragging your nails over his flesh while you traced this invisible path with your lips and tongue while keeping his gaze. The movement extracted a shudder from him.
“Ah fuck,” he whimpered. His hands automatically reached for you but you were quick to react. Moving back up you grabbed his wrists and slammed them next to his head again. Putting your full weight onto them to indicate that you were in control. There was no way you could actually win from him since he was way stronger and could easily overpower you. But the message was received as you clicked your tongue at him.
“Do that again and I will stop.” You said. Henry grunted in response. Clearly struggling to control himself but, again, did as you told.
Continuing your oral expedition you moved lower and lower. As you reached his stomach you wickedly licked each one of his abs while squeezing his thighs with your hands. He wriggled underneath your touch but kept his arms up, just like you demanded.
You could feel his hard-on press against the underside of your boobs and suddenly an idea popped up in your head.  Looking up you pressed your boobs together, capturing his cock in-between. A curse fell from his lips.
“Holy shit,” he breathed. You started to move up and down, putting more pressure while holding his gaze. Henry clenched his teeth and bucked his hips to match your rhythm.
A sudden rush of excitement and confidence washed over you for having him under your control. For now at least. After several thrusts you moved further down and took him straight into your mouth which drew another curse from him.
While pleasuring him with your mouth you let your hands glide over his tree trunk thighs, massaging the muscles there. His eyes fluttered close as he fisted his hands into his own hair, struggling with keeping them there. You moved your hands down to cup his balls while licking and sucking his cock.
That was the moment Henry said ‘fuck it’, grabbed your wrists and threw you onto your back. In a blink he was hovering over you. Pressing his full-body weight onto you while catching your lips in a hungry kiss.
“Fuck woman, what are you doing to me,” he muttered and guided himself at your soaked entrance. You let out a breathy moan and held onto his biceps.
The same feeling you had when you entered his suite this morning washed over you again. Your skin thrummed with a feral need to be touched. Your core clenching around nothing made you almost go mad, especially because you craved the way he felt, how he filled you up. The memory of it alone made you almost moan.
“Please Henry,” you pleaded and before your could finish your sentence he had already moved forward, filling your oh-so desperate hole.
He leaned onto his forearms, the position caused him to move closer and you shuddered as you felt the soft curls of his chest brush your pebbled nipples. His warm breath caressed your face and his clear-blue eyes stared right into yours.
His brows furrowed as he started to increase the pace, you moving along with him. Eyes fluttering close as he started to drive your closer to your peak. You clutched his curls as the moans started to spill out of your mouth, encouraging him to keep doing what he was doing.
Because what he was doing.. it was like a drug and it had you insanely addicted. Wanting all of it and above all wanting it more and more and more.
“Ah yes, just like that,” you whimpered.
Henry growled and grabbed your jaw. “Open your eyes,” he commanded and with a lot of effort you tried to obey him. The impact of your building orgasm now so close. “Look at me and come with me.” Those words and the way he was fucking you threw you straight over the edge. Causing you to shout his name in bliss as the wave of your release washed over you, Henry joining you on the same wave when his orgasm hit him too.
The sound of your body fluids, slapping skin and moans filled the room. Your ears ran from the way the dopamine was pounding through your veins.
“My, my, Joanne,” Henry started. “You drive me insane.”
You let out a shaky laugh and relaxed your grip on his curls. Now softly stroking them instead.
“You are amazing.” You retorted. Henry smiled and pressed a quick peck on the corner of your mouth.
“Stay here.”
He got up and made his way to the bathroom. Stay here. Well, that wouldn’t be a problem since you didn’t thrust your trembling legs. While catching your breath Henry returned with a warm cloth and handed it you so you could clean up.
After you were finished you threw the cloth next to the bed and made your way to lay next to Henry. He threw the comfortable blanked over you and tugged you closer to him.
“Well?” He asked and brushed a strain of hair behind your ear. You looked at him in confusion. “What?” “So, are you staying? Tonight? With me?”
You couldn’t help when a smile tugged at your lips. “I’d love too."
A few hours passed when you woke up and licked your lips. Wanting to turn onto your side but were held back and felt a straining feeling at your wrists. What?
Furrowing your brows you tilted you head back so you could look up and your mouth fell open. Your hands were tied to the bed with the bathrobe string. You were fucking tied to the bed. Your breath hitched and quickly looked next to you and met Henry who carried a very smug look on his face.
“What..” You asked in confusion and felt your heart beat rise while trying to comprehend the situation while giving a tug at the fabric.
“I wanted to make sure you’d stay.” You heard him say and looked back at him. “You don’t blame me, now do you, darling?”
Your mouth was still open forming an ‘O’. You were lost for words and kind of swept away with how Henry looked with that smug on his face and the way that dark-brown curl fell onto his forehead.
“And even though I did enjoy the fact that you were in control earlier, I prefer to have the reigns into my own hands. I can’t wait to have my way with you.”
Oh boy. Well neither could you.

Can I ask you to ramble about your current hyperfixation?
I am always up for some rambling! Thank you for the ask!!
Unfortunately for my non-fandom followers, my hyperfixation has not changed for the past two and a half years. (All mutuals now groaning, ‘Shut up about the Stand, Mouse.’) I still cannot explain my extended fix; usually I'm a year tops. Hook onto a character, appease the yearning rats, move on. Not this time…
This may have to do with the fact that the Fandom is smaller. Other fixations, I could casually scroll Tumblr for fan art, find stories to scratch the itch on AO3, and passively ride the wave until something pulled me in another direction. Couldn't do that here. There were like 11 stories for ‘the Stand’ that even tagged Glen Bateman as a character. Some of them were prior to the version of Glen that took up residence in my brain (2020 miniseries), and none of them had him as a primary focus. What's a girl to do, right? Write also turned out to be the answer. So this was the first time I was writing and posting fanfic to AO3. About 290k words later, and almost a year of digging into their characters, here I am, stuck on the same damn guys. The rats are still yearning, and I have no further way to appease them. (Although, I'm sure they will thank you for indulging them now.)
But yeah, still 100% hooked on Stephen King's ‘the Stand’, and specifically the newest 2020 miniseries version. I blame Kinnear's version of Glen. He's a great character in the other versions, but the stars aligned with his take. Witty. Intelligent, but with a cheek and lightheartedness. Logical, yet open to the new world of the unknown. Questioning, but true to himself and loyal to those around him. Speaking his mind, and saying what he believes, regardless of the danger it poses. (And this is not even touching the vaping, which is a fantastic touch, and definitely a way to my heart as well.) Plus, I've always loved Kinnear as an actor, just never saw him in a role where I connected to his character like this. I truly was doomed from the start.
And that's pretty much how it went too. The first damn scene he’s in, and I'm instantly hit with the ‘holy fuck, I love this character’ K.O. punch. Cause that's what I really need for a hyperfix to stick, love for a character.
Then the end of that same episode. This look…
Tumblr media
I could go on for days about this look. A ‘Man of Science’ facing the reality of the previously unbelievable. His world view shaken, and now left to piece the puzzle back together. Tear down what he ‘knew’, and start looking at things from a new perspective. This single moment where the world changed for him. It's just… 🤌
I love this fictional man. He has hijacked my brain, and honestly, not really seeing a problem. He can stay as long as he wants. I'll give him some paints, and he can chill up there making fun commentary about life. Maybe give some helpful insight.
But yeah, the Stand still top hyperfixation for me. I have a love of the story as a whole too, don't get me wrong. Read the book, have the ‘94 series, picked up the comics… And other characters have worked their way into my heart too (Lloyd Henreid, I'm talking about you), but Glen was, and still is, the reason I'm here so long after.
Was that rambling enough? Too much? I have no gauge. But I will always elaborate if asked. Do not be afraid to ask, this is why I'm here!!

You know what I want as a fan of The Monkees? Three things: 1. I want a documentary of them making Headquarters ( there had to be some video hopefully) showing not only how hard the boys worked and want they had to go through to make this album, but also how they were together in the studio when they were allowed to do want they wanted. 2. A real true biopic or miniseries like Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman, Elvis, etc. showing the good, bad & ugly. All of it. Seeing their story finally get
(cont) told letting people know all the BTS. Really good actors playing them and getting into the all of it. I even got a title Hollywood, Listen to the Band. Not only is perfect because it was the last song they played together before peter left, but it's what they were asking the whole time. Finally 3: Restored concert of either Japan ( there is suppose video) or any concert showing the amazing show these boys put on. We've heard audio and see some in the tour ep, but imagine if we could see a full restored concert in all it's glory showing everyone what they did and were capable of. So yeah that's my three. Sorry for so many messages, Tumblr kept cutting me off. I just feel their story needs to told and their hard work needs to be seen. If people knew maybe they see them differently and with more respect, What do you think. BTW, I LOVE your blog! I've been browsing through it and it's one of the best Monkees blogs I've seen. Thank you for it :)
omg this was such a joy to log in and see! thanks for sharing this insight. but, to add to what you're saying, YES YES YES. TO ALL OF THIS. re: the movie -- you're so onto something. like, i don't see as much of it now, but since i'm kind of the old wine aunt of monkees tumblr, i remember the days when we'd all sit around and just make a complete mockery of the daydream believers movie. and, while it's in no way a perfect movie (or even a good one, lmao) it just proves that there's a good story at the heart of the monkees' tale. it's a perfect found family piece -- four people from different walks of life coming together to make something great. i think their story would resonate better now than it did in the '60s (mostly because i don't think our society cares much about the concept of 'selling out' / authenticity is viewed differently now than it was in 1966).
i hope we'd be able to see more concert footage, too! they were a great live band (AND still are, speaking as someone who's been fortunate enough to have seen all of the different lineups, save the four of them and micky, davy & peter) and their live show was truly where they cut their teeth. correct me if i'm wrong, but mike or peter (or was it MICKY? google is free, but i'm too in the zone to double check) has/had a great quote saying that when they were on stage, just the four of them, was when they really became the monkees. they became a real band -- i think it was micky, just because that's one of his go-to quotes (kind of like the shrek/i'm a believer one). thank you so very much for sharing your thoughts with me & the kind words about the blog! i'm happy to spread some love and light & i'm glad you found my content and like it. thank you endlessly!

I saw the same post you kind of, alleged? (Unsure if it's the correct word) and man oh man, the way it was written felt extremely accusatory for no reason. Like, i have my own opinions about the bigotry in the CR fandom, but it is in no way more or less present than almost any other fandom
Im paraphrasing but it felt like they were saying "hey critters, just so you know this story has PoC and it's very important to PoC (not me of course cause im white) so be cautious and respectful" like ok? And?? (I'm aware that this is ofc how i interpreted the post, and may not be the true intentions of OP)
Sorry im rambling to your askbox, but it just, felt wrong to read lmao
No worries (and the word would probably be alluded to, or honestly you can just say “vagued” here, let’s not beat around the bush).
Yeah it’s…something. Like, I am also white and so I don’t feel comfortable actually going on OP’s post to say “uh what the fuck,” but like, racism in actual play fandom is a very valid topic to explore, but “not watching the original series for a miniseries in which there were black characters” is an entirely neutral choice, particularly if the miniseries has twice as many actors of color (and twice as many black actors) in it as the original.
Anyway it fucking sucks. It co-opts social justice language/the concept of anti-racism but makes it about the white OP's apprehension about a different DM coming into a world they like. I also find that D20 fans have been pretty fucking obnoxious about "I just wonder if CR fans/fans of Matt will understand the rich lore" while not actually providing any tools to understand that lore other than watching A Crown of Candy. Like...obviously I have my biases as a CR wiki editor but the D20 wiki is in shambles. I've gone there to get Neverafter summaries because I'm still struggling to get through that season but do want to know what happens, and there's nothing. If all this whiny, hostile handwringing about how CR fans won't know the lore were replaced by a few hours of cleaning up D20 fan-made resources so they could learn the lore? That would do a thousand times more good. But it's not about that; it's pure snobbery. And here's the thing: it doesn't matter if people do know the lore. It's none of anyone's fucking business what other people watch, and to throw this into the CR main tag acting like people who are fans of CR can't pick up on lore is laughably stupid and incredibly obnoxious but also, if they can't? Why the fuck should that bother an existing D20 fan?
I love ACOC! I do think that if you have the time to watch it, it's a great watch and I highly recommend it! But presumably Brennan and Matt have worked together to set the scene for new viewers. And most importantly, it is not actually problematic for people to come in to the series cold, and it's immensely gross of a white person to act like it is when this is really entirely about their own feelings.
[This is a tangent but I have many thoughts about how to be a welcoming fan to new fans, mostly boiling down to "shut the fuck up and let them enjoy themselves without trying to meddle in the business of strangers simply because they like what you like." Anyway it's interesting bc I find CR fans err in the other direction of trying to be too welcoming in a way I find offputting, and glossing over the fact that yeah actually there is a lot of lore floating around that might be worth checking out if you are so inclined; both approaches suck.]

Luke Arnold, Doc Wyatt talk the teamwork and insanity that defines ‘ESSENTIALS’
The compelling new OGN is funding via Kickstarter.
by Chris Coplan (April 18, 2024)
You may know Luke Arnold as Long John Silver in the Black Sails and/or INXS’ own Michael Hutchence in the Never Tear Us Apart miniseries. Doc Wyatt, meanwhile, is best known for his production work on the iconic Napoleon Dynamite and the animated Rocket and Groot for Marvel. So, what happens when a lauded actor and a TV writer/producer get together? Why a brand-new graphic novel, ESSENTIALS.
For ESSENTIALS, Arnold and Wyatt were brought together in part by The Lab Press, a new publishing outfit that focuses primarily on graphic novels. Together, the pair then collaborated with a veritable smorgasbord of comics artists, including Bill Sienkiewicz (who does the cover), Dani, Jason Howard, Andrea Mutti, and Glenn Fabry. (The book’s colors were provided by Jordie Bellaire, Brad Simpson, and Wesley Wong, with lettering from DC Hopkins of AndWorld Design).
Once fully assembled, this superstar team behind ESSENTIALS set about crafting a story in which “the world you see around you is not real.” More specifically, we follow “disgraced mathematician Harris Pax” as he and Buttons (an “interdimensional being possessing his niece’s favorite toy”) set about smashing the walls of this faux reality. ESSENTIALS asks some big questions — “What matters most in a well-lived life? Is joy more valuable than truth?” — just as much as it’s a rollicking, dimension-hopping adventure story.
ESSENTIALS is currently crowdfunding via Kickstarter, with the campaign having raised $13,000-plus (of a seemingly $1,111 goal) on the way to its May 16 deadline. (Head here to contribute.) To get a better idea of the work that went into ESSENTIALS, we recently got to field questions to both Arnold and Wyatt. The duo spoke about the somewhat involved creative process, the big themes at the book’s heart, working with The Lab Press, and much more.

The talent behind ESSENTIALS. Courtesy of The Lab Press.
AIPT: I’m curious: what’s the collaborative process look like between a TV writer and an actor making a comic book?
Luke Arnold: It’s hard to summarize this process because there are so many stages. We broke most of the story on zoom between Australia and LA. Then, we outlined in pieces, trading them back and forth multiple times, rewriting and recrafting until we were happy. After that, we’d take a chapter each, write them, share them, editing and/or rewriting each other’s work. Then, it would go to the artists, and we’d wait for the first sketches to roll in.
Because the team (Doc, myself, and everyone at The Lab) is spread around the globe, we found that the best place to review artwork was actually in VR. We all got Oculus headsets that allowed us to sit around a table together with the art displayed on a huge board in front of us, marveling over the work and deciding on any notes to send back to the artists.
The next few stages would take place over email, and then when all the art was finished, Doc and I would get back on Zoom to take another look at the script. Once you have those final pages, you can quickly realize that a lot of dialogue feels unnecessary, so we’d go through and make changes before sending everything to the letterer. That was one of my favorite stages, as you have an opportunity to write some parts all over again, inspired by the work of the artists.
Doc Wyatt: Luke’s an actor, but he’s also a novelist. His novels blow me away. I knew Luke first as an actor, and on set, he was talking about these fantasy novels that he wanted to write. But when it actually happened, I was blown away. The Last Smile in Sunder City was Luke’s first book, and it kicked off a series that’s a mashup of the noir detective genre with urban fantasy. Anyone who’s missed it should catch up with it.
As a writer, Luke is intricate. He works in levels and layers, meanings behind meanings, and philosophical underpinnings. It was a really rich and rewarding experience because we’d start out talking about the story we were breaking, but the conversation would drift into all these other, unrelated places… until suddenly it would snap back into story mode, but bringing along all these influences from our seemingly unrelated conversations.
AIPT: What’s the elevator pitch for ESSENTIALS? It seems like there are a lot of big questions churning at the heart of this book.
LA: Our world has collided with another dimension and reality has become untethered. Most humans were killed in the collision, and those that survived are now trapped in their own subjective realities as their beliefs, thoughts, and fears become manifest around them. Harris Pax – the only scientist who foresaw this apocalypse and managed to protect himself – has teamed up with Buttons – a being from the other dimension. Together they must travel into these subjective realities and convince the people inside to give up their illusions and return to the real world.
DW: Honestly, it can sound complicated, but at the end of the day the story is pretty simple. A cosmic catastrophe has killed most human life, with the few survivors unknowingly stuck in their own bubbles of subjective reality. It’s the job of our heroes to pull them out of these private realities before they’re killed by them.
AIPT: Similarly, it seems like this book may be about/interested in simulations and subjective reality and the like. Why are those kinds of massive ideas interesting, and how do you come at them from a new angle?
LA: It’s a cliché now to say that we’ve never been so divided. We started writing this four years ago, and things seem to have only gotten worse. In this age of reactionary politics and algorithms, we really are starting to live in separate realities where even basic facts are up for dispute. But this feeling of disconnection was an existential issue long before the internet. Artists and writers have always explored the pain of isolation, our yearning for interconnection, and the despondency that comes from witnessing the perpetual division of the human race on both an intimate and planetary scale. With ESSENTIALS, we found two heroes, a villain, and a reality-spanning quest that allows us to dig into these concerns in a way that feels fresh and kind of limitless. There are already so many realities we’ve had to cast aside and many more we hope to include as the story continues.
The Jason Howard cover to ESSENTIALS. Courtesy of The Lab Press.
AIPT: What’s it like to be the debut release from Lab Press? Does that pressure help or complicate your process as creators and then also promoters of said creation?
LA: I can really only speak to it from a creative standpoint. It has awarded us a kind of freedom that is rare to find. The Lab and ESSENTIALS were formed at the same time, so the publishers had no preconceptions about what this book needed to be. There were no expectations, either from the reader or the company itself, so the book was able to find its form on its own terms. And being their debut, The Lab was likely more open to our wild ideas, such as jumping between so many artists in the way we do.
DW: For me, sure– it’s a little nerve-wracking to be the first book from a new publisher, because they’re going to be doing all their learning on our book. But that said, we believe in them. They’ve certainly taken a risk on our weird, little, indie book, so it’s only fair we take a risk on them!
AIPT: The book has a slew of talented artists attached, including Dani, Andrea Mutti, and Bill Sienkiewicz. What’s it mean to have such a roster of sheer artistic talent, and do you have any standout moments/pages?
LA: Even though this book has been in development for years, from the artists signing on to sending their pencils, their inks and colors, and now holding the final version, I still can’t really comprehend that we were able to work with artists of this caliber.
This is the first comic I’ve written, and so I was still wondering how all our scripts would come out after being interpreted by the artist. There’s a sequence in chapter two with a collage of a conversation that passes through a bunch of scenarios across a double page spread, and when Jason Howard sent us his pencils of that section, I started to believe that this world Doc and I had dreamed up could actually be realized.
I also have to say that I’m a huge Glenn Fabry fan. We gave him some of our weirdest pages, and his beautifully textured detail is everything we hoped for and more.
DW: The Lab Press had us submit a list of dream artists we’d be dying to work with. We did, thinking–well, they’ll never be able to get these… But they did!!! They didn’t tell me that they’d gotten Bill Sienkiewicz for a cover, who has been a very important artist to me since childhood. Instead they just revealed to me the fully finished cover at a party at New York Comic Con as a big surprise, and I just about lost it. It’s such an amazing cover. And it’s so Bill while still being so ESSENTIALS!
AIPT: Do you have a fave sci-fi book/film/show/etc. that maybe made its way into this project in some way (intentionally or not)?
LA: Doc is a font of sci-fi knowledge, and our original scripts were stuffed full of amazing references. Eventually, we decided to remove most of them before sending the scripts to artists because we didn’t want to cloud their minds with other visuals before we could see what their imaginations offered up. On quick flip though, you could see references to Alien, The Blob, and Night of the Living Dead, but we’ve done our best to use that imagery as a starting block to build something weirder.
AIPT: Why should anyone support the forthcoming Kickstarter for ESSENTIALS?
LA: Because this book is done and it’s incredible. We’re teaming up with Kickstarter because it’s the best way to get the books out to everyone around the world. We’re not asking for support to get it finished or anything like that. Not long after we launch, the book will be out of the printers and in your hands.
DW: We love our weird little story, and we want to tell more of it in the future, but we’ll only get the chance to do that if people read and love this one. We want to get the word out any way we can, so backers will find and support and read the book. It’s strange, it’s heady, and it’s not for everyone, but the people who it’s for– we hope– will really love it!

MotA pt nine:
(writing this up for the sake of completionism but it may... be a little too critical for some people's liking. maybe skip it if you loved it.)
you introduce three new characters in episode 8? and then do nothing with them? all that focus on the tuskegee airmen and for what
I'm not surprised the planned escape didn't go according to plan, but... why set it up like it would be the focus of this episode?
why does nobody ever take into account the other POWs from the 100th? (buck and bucky don't mention them when deciding to escape; crosby and rosie don't ask after them)
no scenes of the other POWs post-liberation?
no revelations about capt westgate and what she's been up to, not even if she made it out alive?
no answer to the question "does kidd ever look happy"?
no meatball?
only six (6) biographies in the end credits?
I'm fine with sprawling meandering narratives but you do have to bring it all together eventually. to that end, every character still involved in the story should be included to some extent. (e.g. you could use your montages to better effect. I'm not that interested in the east anglia locals. show me capt westgate, show me the belgian resistance, show me the tuskegee airmen.)
I do not think you can efficaciously combine a Main Character style narrative (egan, cleven, crosby and rosie as POV characters) with a sprawling meandering narrative. pick one.
I assumed that the Main Character device was chosen to make the story more coherent (even if it was not a creative choice I would have personally made) but it... didn't
similarly I never thought egan and cleven worked as the narrative focus but I figured there was a good reason for it. now I think I was right. (I probably would have given them skip/muck levels of prominence rather than winters/nixon levels; I do not think all their screentime was justified and it was never clear why they were the "indisputed leaders of the 100th".) I like rosie but not giving over half an episode to his r&r; I like crosby but not his narration. like robert hutton, "I generally think if you're narrating, you've failed".
it has the uncomfortable feeling of a story that covers many interesting stories within it but does none of them justice. if the story of the 100th bomb group can't be told well in 9 episodes, find a different piece of war history. I don't feel the writers were uninvested, but they could not keep all these balls in the air.
I suspect this episode may originally have been two episodes (one more focused on the POW camp, the final episode more based around homecoming) condensed into one for budgetary reasons. I like to think alex, macon and daniels would otherwise have got more to do.
budgetary reasons may also be why they sorta skipped over D-Day (specifically, combat scenes) despite building up to it in previous episodes
I do think better editing would have helped the show overall
the combat scenes were generally good but the strategy was not clear, leading to another uncomfortable feeling that maybe the RAF toffs were right actually
like the "bombers as bait" thing revealed in episode 7... that seemed to be setting up some terrifying suspenseful missions but I don't think we really got to see them?
I do have favourite characters! just possibly not ones I was meant to have
hope the young largely unknown supporting actors get some good roles in the near future (I knew quite a few of them from other things, so naturally I'm faintly protective of them. go forth!)
I will read miller's book sometime. (I wanted to judge the series on its own merits and not know any of the pilots' fates beforehand, but that may have come with tradeoffs. anyway, will read it.)
to be as blunt as I will get: messing up a miniseries based on a book seems quite a feat. I didn't expect to have no criticisms, but I expected it to be cohesive.
might gif some supporting character darlings. might not get around to it (... most of my edits were made in lockdown)
I will try not to say any more unkind things about it in the future, this is my vent post

[CH-ENG translation] Interview: Find something to be wholeheartedly happy about. Jake Hsu: "Being an artist is influential work. I hope to continue to bring strength and warmth to other people."
Interview by Alec Zhan, Men’s Uno, 16 December 2022
Tumblr media
"I want to make the world better through my works. I really believe this can happen. Being an artist is influential work. I hope to continue to bring strength and warmth to other people," Jake talked like this in the interview. After acting in several Q-series, Jake gradually grabbed the attention of the public. In 'Shards of Her', he displayed exquisite acting skills, and fully received recognition for it. In this interview, he not only shared his experiences along the way, he also brought up the reasons why he ardently loves acting, as well as his determination to become an actor. Let's walk together through these words to Jake's inner world.
A poem that let him walk to the heart of a character
Talking about the present situation, Jake indicated that he's in the middle of filming a series. In December, more details will be shared. "It's a 6-episode miniseries, and filming will soon be over. This role is very fun to play. Next to martial arts scenes that I filmed earlier, there is also much physical labor to be done for this role. [My character] is a driver of a tricycle. In the series he really has to ride a tricycle to transport goods, he's exposed to the sun a lot, he talks Taiwanese, etc. It's a character type I haven't come into contact with before."
In the recently popular ‘Shards of Her’, Jake, who plays Tiffany Hsu's younger brother, successfully attracted the attention of a lot of fans thanks to his superb acting. This included making the audience, along with Tiffany Hsu, cry with just one line.
About the how of playing the part of Lin Zhen Ye, who fell into a depression, he said: "I just want to find that burden, to the point that it I collapse under its weight myself. What is his (mental) state? How does he think? This results in him [Lin Zhen Ye] entering a state that normal people can't understand in the end, because he doesn't even talk and can't communicate with other people. But he also makes some moves that push forward the plot of this series. So this text was very important to me and helped me a lot. Whether it was lines or writings in the script, it was written for the actors to read."
Among the annotations, Jake remembered there was a poem by Lin Wanyu  that kicked his heart into gear and guided him towards this role. "That poem is my favourite in the whole series. Even though it's written somewhere on set, the audience probably won't get to see it. This sort of thing is very important to me. The poem goes like this: The things I held on to are still in my pocket It's those little beliefs Supporting the entire workings of the galaxy Giving me light in the daytime And stars at night
Just like this character's affection for his sister has been in his heart all along. No matter which emotional difficulties he faces, this conviction make sure he can go all the way until now."
Tumblr media
As for the popularity of the series [Shards of Her] at the moment, did it make Jake feel like more attention was on him [as an actor]? He explained laughing that because he cut his long hair, he wouldn't really be noticed by other people.
On the reason of him cutting his hair, he said: "I think I was a bit despressed while shooting this series. When I was in the middle of learning the character, I thought that nothing in life was happy. I lent my body to him to experience such feelings, and I in turn felt that depression [of his]. My own way of getting out of it was by cutting my hair."
Even though Jake cut his long hair short now, he indicated that if there was a series requiring him to let it grow out, he would be happy to accept.
Enjoying the compliments of others
Talking about his experiences since making his debut as an actor, Jake has gradually become famous after taking part in several Q-series. About the experiences and the training process of that time, he said that, thinking back on it, he was actually very happy, even though at that time he was short on money.
"I shared a rented room of 1 ping [3.3m2) and the rent of that room was only 5000TWD [about $162]. I spent almost two years living like this! This room, apart from our (bed)room had a communal space outside. I remember when it rained we had a pond. We had no windows, and mice would scurry in the ceilings and later die in the bathroom. It's funny thinking back on it now. That there are such houses in Taipei! But we can't complain about living in the city center for only 5000TWD [a month]."
Although many mysterious and odd things happened in that house, Jake still felt reluctant to leave when it was time to move out. "When life was really hard, I'd still have a feeling of reluctance to part with it. But that was because wanted to keep living there, so I didn't have to give up and return home."
Tumblr media
Since childhood, Jake was fond of performing and it seems that as a child he already set the goal for himself to become an actor. "I remember that I liked performing, even when I was really young at three or four years old. At that time I was doing some silly magic tricks in front of friends and classmates. Because we were all children, they were happy to watch, no matter how silly the magic tricks were. I really enjoyed their feelings of amazement ('Wow') too.”
After this, Jake dabbled in magic tricks all the way until high school, and became the president of the magic club. He also decided to attend  a university that taught performing arts. "I never thought about doing anything else than acting at all. Signing up for the drama department was my only choice ever, and I always said that if I didn't pass it [that department's entrance exam], I'd serve in the army."
Still, no matter how much Jake loves acting, he still can't shake the feeling of nervousness when facing the cameras. "The first time I was looking into a camera, I was really nervous to death! There were huge differences with the stage plays that I studied. These differences still exist until today...I'm still fumbling and endlessly exploring, but learning these things is really fun."
Perhaps because the opportunities for acting became more numerous, Jake has slowly explored his own ways to prepare, such as drinking water before going on stage/walking on set. This way he can disspel some of his anxiety. But he also shared that preparing for filming is still vastly different than preparing for a stage play. "The work format is slightly different. Stage plays could be rehearsed for 3 or 4 months at a time. The director and the actors continuously work until everything is perfect. That's not the case with filming [a series or movie]. When filming you receive a script and things you film today are broadcast together with things you shot on the first and the 80th day, so the moments when your performance isn't totally okay are easily noticed [litterally: 'easy for bitter scenes to appear'].
Tumblr media
Finding things to be wholeheartedly happy with
Jake also has a very intriguing habit, which is that before he boards a plane, he will write a death note. We're also curious about what he writes in those. "The main sentiment is using elegant and sentimental language to bid farewell to my family. The intro to each death note approximately goes like this: 'Mom, dad, thank you for supporting my interest [in acting]. I may be dead now, but I don't have any regrets. Please rest assured that I lived a happy life, even if I didn't earn big money. Sorry for not leaving you any money, but in this acting business you really don't earn much' and such. I am someone who doesn't want to have any regrets left. Suppose I took a plane today and the plane was going down ten minutes in, I would go crazy if I didn't write such a death note, but it is what it is."
The funny thing is that you can probably find the death notes Jake has written before all over his home. "I have my death notes everywhere in my home now. I'm not sure that I unearthed the previous one each time I write a new one. When the time comes, I hope the lawyer will be be able to find out which one is the most recent note."
Tumblr media
In private, Jake is a big movie lover. He likes to look at movies with an analytical perspective. "The first time watching a movie I'm more of an audience member, but if I like the movie, the second time I watch it I might think about the director's shots or admire why actors performed something a certain way. This way you can really learn a lot of things."
Another way to recharge his batteries is by playing badminton, which he started last year. "I discovered that playing badminton makes me extremely happy. Even though I don't play very well, I don't need to think about or care about anything while hitting [the shuttlecock]. I also discovered it's extremely important to find anything you can be wholeheartedly happy about."
Apart from his private interests, Jake reckons he's a multi-faceted person. "Because I was confronted by some issues in the past two years, and I examined myself a lot, I discovered that I am a completely different person when I am on my own, when I am hanging out with friends, or when I'm hanging out with fellow actors in a work situation. If anyone overlaps in two domains [i.c. if anyone is both a friend and a colleague], they'll be surprised about how different I am. This also opened up my understanding of a role; characters can have extremely different aspects, even though they're one person."
Like when he hangs out with friends, he said that he's often acting crazily [outspoken], but when he enters his workplace, people have asked him whether he's a bit autistic. And when he's alone, he often goes into a weirdly peaceful state, so much so that he can sit on the sofa for five hours straight without doing anything.
Tumblr media
Continue to bring strength and warmth to other people
The theme of the December issue [of Men's Uno] is 'unique style'. We also want to know how Jake cultivates his own style? "I think style is not something that you have a method for, or that you create consciously. It just happens in every decision in life. For example, I decide which clothes I'm going to wear today, or which breakfast I'll eat, what music to listen to. Every little decision like this creates a person's life style." Just like when you create a movie, he thinks that directors with style won't think about what that style is. They'll just make every decision according to their own taste, and string their movie together like that.
[Being asked about] a future challenging role and goal, Jake, after consideration, replied that he would really wants to play a lawyer. Why is that? He believes he is someone with clear expressions and trains of thoughts. "During the process of observing myself, I found that the way my brain operates is very organized, like a machine. This can hinder me when I create certain characters, but help me with characters that require logic. For example, I recently played a guest role as a prosecutor. It was incomparably easy for me speak of what the evidence pointed at in an orderly manner."
But Jake also found out that emotionally outgoing roles are currently his weak point, "because my brain doesn't work like this, my rationality will be ahead of my emotions. So I'll be a little jammed. Intellectually I'll feel I don't need emotions to do things. Since I'm obviously able to solve things this way, why would I need to be outspoken? But currently I often accept roles with outspoken characters, so that's just as well for tempering my own [character].
Tumblr media
At the end of the interview, we want to ask what Jake thinks is the happiest, most accomplished part of being an actor? "When someone gets strength from my work. I remember going to Taipei Film Fest one time. Getting out of Zhongshan Hall [an auditorium in Taipei] about to flag down a car, there was a boy running over to me clutching a slip of paper in his hand. Until now I still remember the contents of that piece of paper. It said 'thank you, Zishuo, [Jake's character in Close Your Eyes Before It's Dark] for allowing me to die, and at the same time be reborn.' After reading that note, I cried heavily in the square in front of Zhongshan Hall. I couldn't imagine that that was the strength I gave people, so that he felt he was reborn and was able to tell his story. That power, that continues to push me forward to be an actor, is that through my works I want to make this world a better place. I really believe this can happen. Being an artist is influential work. I hope to continue to bring strength and warmth to other people."

F - What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom?
N - Name three things you wish you saw more or in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice).
R - Which friendship/platonic relationship is your favorite in fandom?
What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom?
Hmm... I guess it depends on how you define "in". I feel like my role in fandom circles has a lot to do with making things (whether it's art or fic or scanning in materials that are hard to fine or whatever) and that can be hard to keep up for years and years (especially if your media of choice doesn't HAVE new stuff to share.)
That being said, I think I'll have to say X-Men? I fell into Marvel comics when I was in, oh, fifth or sixth grade, when a friend I saw in the summers introduced me to her collection. She had a lot of X-Men and Excalibur comics (which were current at the time) and I think she had a subscription to get them mailed to her? I didn't have that kind of money and for a long time my comic collecting was sporadic at best. (This is how I ended up with 3 copies of the 1985 Nightcrawler miniseries in my possession today.)
When the movies started coming out in the early 2000's I was SO hype because my friends were smitten with the various actors and I was just excited that for once, my Pride and Prejudice reading pals gave a hoot about that thing I loved.
I don't make a lot of original content for X-Men, but I still read comics, watch stuff, (share stuff) and engage in fandom discussions. It's been... //checks watch// 28 years since the start, so I guess that'll do.
Name three things you wish you saw more or in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice).
I want more manga style Mattfoggy art and I want it *yesterday.* Every time I see a Japanese or Korean artist dabble in it on Twitter or Tumblr I LAVISH them in compliments because I need them to know how much I appreciate it. I love all of the western style art too, but my 90's anime kid heart wants what it wants.
Collaborative works! Maybe I'm a little biased because I love a little co-writing project, but I would love to see more team-ups between fans. Whether that's illustrated stories, co-written fic, art style swaps or whatever. This fandom is full of so many talented people and I'd love to see them working together more often. :3
Cute fanmerch? There's a little bit out there, but not that much. I know DD isn't the new hotness anymore, and artists have to make things they know will sell, but I would love even some print-on-demand designs that weren't just LOGO or SILHOUETTE or whatever.
Which friendship/platonic relationship is your favorite in fandom?
A tricky question for someone who thrives on friends-to-lovers! XD For the sake of this question I assume you mean a platonic relationship that fans explore versus what's canon. In that regard... hmm... While a lot of it can seem really hokey (because people tend to write MCU Peter Parker as even gee-willakers younger than he feels on screen) I think there are many fans who have done more for Team Red than Marvel ever will. Even the silly memey shitposts make me smile, but the comic interactions can be downright toxic. Eesh. I also enjoy it when people write a fun interaction for Jess and Matt, because Defenders didn't give us nearly enough and the fans know what the fans want. :3

as a long time enjoyer of 2005 p&p you utterly fascinate me and I would sincerely love to hear your Ted talk on why it's bad if you wanted to share it
ok disclaimer: you can enjoy the movie. it's fine. if you enjoy it, that's great, hold on to that. I don't want to take anything away from you. enjoying Pride & Prejudice (2005) is completely valid. I am going to say things in this post that are unkind to P&P05, and some of those things are opinions and some of those things are facts, and you should take all of them with a grain of salt and continue loving P&P05 if that is where your heart takes you. love that which you love.
that said,
friend I have had this deep-seated hatred and loathing in my heart simmering for like a decade and a half, and to fully explain it, I would need to fully prepare, and in order to prepare, I'd need to review at least two novels, three films, a miniseries, and the entire content history of three or four different youtube channels.
the tl;dr is that it takes a really good classic satire-romance book, a book that is very much a book that was written in 1813 and is deeply surrounded by, critical of, and infused with the culture of the time, and makes a modern Period™ Romance™ Melodrama™, the resulting movie being both a complete violation of the tone of the book and also a complete mockery of period accuracy in. like. every way. Like, I haven't watched the film in years, but the Bennet family wouldn't have goddamn pigs in their dining room, y'know? "landed gentry" and "farmer" are not synonyms.
and Keira Knightley is beautiful and a brilliant actress but by god there is something skeevy about how all of the women in the movie -- a movie set in an era where being curvier was considered attractive -- are all super thin. like 2005 was like the peak of "Being Skinny Is Beautiful, If You're More Than 90lbs, You're Worthless, Please Develop An Eating Disorder" culture, and the casting decisions for that movie... ooooof.
also the Mr Darcy in this movie looks like a fuckin dweeb-ass loser.
and the point I made about Mr Wickham in the original post is good too.
anyway, anyway, anyway, these points are surface-level (except the Wickham one, maybe), and I'm not going to go in-depth here (like I said, if I wanted to go any further, I'd need to, like, rewatch and reread stuff). instead of going further in-depth, I'm gonna recommend two really good adaptations, each coming out about a decade apart from the 2005 version in different directions:
the 1995 BBC miniseries starring Jennifer Ehle is kinda the definitive traditional adaptation of the book, taking exactly the right balance between book accuracy and film adaptation. there's a reason that the Mr Darcy actor in this movie was kinda permanently infused with the character, to the point that when I was writing this sentence I initially accidentally wrote "the Colin Firth actor in this movie" instead of "the Mr Darcy actor in this movie".
the 2013 series "The Lizzie Bennet Diaries" is one of the best reinterpretations of any piece of fiction I have ever seen. it's- it's so good. like goddamn. it's so good. love it. cherish it. it's- it's so good. yes.
if you're interested, there's also
the 1940 film version, which is bad in a so-bad-it's-good way. it was made during WWII when the prevailing theory on Movies About the British was "hey guys, remember the Revolutionary War? forget about that, the Brits are our friends now, look at how wacky and fun they are in this movie! now let's beat the Nazis together! cheerio and what ho!" etc etc. it's mostly harmless but it is very silly and comically inaccurate to the book. but it's fine. have fun
the 1980 BBC miniseries, which is much more accurate textually to the book than even the 1995 miniseries but is so. goddamn. dry that it can get hard to watch. like it's almost word-for-word accurate. like I'm pretty sure you could read the book and watch it at the same time and it would just. like. line up perfectly. The 1980 P&P is why you don't make your film adaptation 100% accurate to the book, ever
the 2003 Mormon version, which is really good, but it was made by Mormons, so it's just a liiiittle bit weird tonally. there's always fingerprints when something was made by a cult, like Mr. Collins calling Lizzie "Sister Bennet" and stuff. just a little bit, though. if you watch the modified version (yes, it exists, the "Sister" is dubbed over with "Miss") you could get away with not even knowing it was a cult movie, like I didn't when I watched it for the first time as a kid -- although the subtitle "A Latter-Day Comedy" might tip you off. some of the soundtrack to this one gets stuck in my head regularly also.
Bride & Prejudice, which is the Bollywood version. I don't know anything about Bollywood but I vaguely remember it being a really good modern take on the movie (and it's a musical!). it did a really good job of interpreting the different characters into its setting -- like the Mr. Collins character is a businessman who came back to India from America to look for a traditional Indian wife, or, like, instead of playing the piano the Mary character does a dance thing that I am not going to describe because I'd get it wrong oh god I'm so fucking white I'm sorry
and of course Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, which I haven't read or seen but I have been told is surprisingly good for what it is
uh. this was originally going to be one paragraph. it got a bit away from me.
yeah. uh. pride and prejudice woo

let's say you've been put in charge of a new thg adaptation, whether it's a new film series, a miniseries, or a tv show. you get complete creative control. what's one scene you would definitely make sure to include that did not make it into the movies? @anonymousinpanem
Hmm, I will say it like this: I really enjoyed the movies for what scenes they picked to show and which ones not. I wish they had shown Madge and Haymitch’s Games and Bonnie and Twil as much as anyone else—and I wish they had shown Caesar’s hug as much as few are as obsessed with this man as me lmao—but overall I think they did well with the time they had. Yes, I disliked some things they settled on such as Peeta’s character and the higher focus on the love triangle without showing it’s symbolism well with the dandelion, but they did what they could.
IF THG were to be remade, I would want it to be a television series. They are more popular nowadays anyhow and for a good reason: More time spent in the world that they are showing and that’s only a positive for book adaptions.
I would grant more focus to District 12: The first episode would solely be about Katniss’ life there. We see Madge, we see her hunting with Gale (because imo, their relationship could have been elaborated on more), we could see her family dynamics better and the town dynamics as well. Some of Gale’s family. Seam people as people of colour vs. merchant people as white people. Some clear distinctions, some clear tensions. Same goes for CF, I really adored the training scenes early in where they got fit for the Games.
I would not stick to Katniss alone: One thing I really enjoyed about the movies was showing different scenes from different people, such as Seneca, Snow, and Plutarch. I want that, but more! Show me Haymitch early on when he tries to get himself more to drink in 12, show me Cinna seeing Katniss on screen and deciding to join the stylist team last minute, show me Plutarch falling into a punch bowl but looking at Katniss as if a light bulb just came up on his head. First person narration is hard to translate on screen and I think that room can be filled with new information that—in working with SC together if possible—can greatly add to a TV show experience.
I would make the series/Games more graphic: Honestly, majority of us fans are grown up now and a possible new adaption doesn’t need to stick to a low rating. Part of me feels as if the errors of the books and Collins’ attempt at brutalising the prequel come from there being too many people who forget the deep meaning of the Games. I don’t mind SYOTs or OC tribute centred fics, but almost too often too many fans don’t see the lack of humanity that’s in those Games. This isn’t another Fortnite; the arenas here have meaning, they aren’t meant to be fun little games and I feel like a new and more mature adaption could show the seriousness they entail. I don’t want to scare anyone away, but I don’t want death to be romanticised or even be trivial. Overall, though, I want the entire series to be more graphic. I want to show the poverty and terrible lives. I want to make the ridiculous wealth the Capitol has gathered more obvious. I don’t think 2022 is the time to sugarcoat what is going on there, and with a more graphic tale I think the series can be more relevant than ever.
I would place the seeds of rebellion from early on: Show Haymitch talk to (maybe from behind, so the actor doesn’t need to be cast yet) Finnick mentoring during the first season/book adaption. See Plutarch plotting. See some 13 hints. See some hints of Cressida and Co./general Capitol rebels. See a reaction from District people upon the berry incident—albeit I’m on the fence with that; maybe not too strongly as to still live in Katniss’ assumption that all is well now that they both won. Either way, I know this adds to the second point I made, but I really want to have more foreshadowing in the series that wasn’t possible from the start. In the same vein, because this is me and my adaption :) I want Caesar to be on the rebels side as I always pictured him: recruiting victors to the cause while Plutarch does the broader plans and recruits Capitol people. No one better than Caesar who is close with the tributes/victors anyhow to convince Finnick, Johanna, and Co. of the plan for the 75th.
A good/better cast: I want native Katniss, Gale, Haymitch. I want my preferred Caesar actors, I want an overweight Plutarch. I want to see more racial diversity. Some of the previous actors were iconic, so I wouldn’t even mind recasting them if I were honest. If we cannot find someone who even exceeds their abilities, why not re-invite Julianne Moore or Donald Sutherland? As long as they are still acting I want them back, lmao. I wouldn’t even mind a cameo from the original trio: They are all too expensive nowadays, but maybe they would agree to a cameo: As parents of children who weren’t reaped, as District 13 officials, as mentors in the background. I would even enjoy seeing JLaw play Mrs. Everdeen, though I think that would kill the budget real quick.
Speaking of which, as a former Effie stan before I became obsessed with my two mans: I don’t want her to be in District 13. Yes, it was fun, but it so much took away from her story that was vital to her character: Being mistreated in the Capitol isn’t fun that’s for sure, but there was value in that for her character that isn’t at all the same as her being (unwillingly) dragged to 13. She took away from two sets of characters at once: Prep team and Plutarch. Both make sense, but ideally with a new Plutarch actor not dying, I don’t want her taking lines from Plutarch, who is quite happy to be there (and Effie clearly wasn’t). At most, if she really has to be there, I would want her to replace the prep team entirely, including her arrest. I enjoyed Octavia’s character, but I understand if that isn’t realistic. But put her in the same overalls, don’t give her extra clothes that make no sense to be here. Effie shouldn’t be allowed all those weird adjustments that turn her into a punchline and lessen 13’s authoritarian pressure. In the same breath, the Hayffie romance was too much of a punchline that doesn’t suit the actual vibes of Effie and Haymitch. Like, yes, they make for a comedic duo, but the actress’ push for Hayffie ignored the real tensions that Haymitch should feel. Effie is literally coming from the society that oppressed him, that killed his family, and that made his life hell on earth. Most of us get the impression she didn’t really care before she met Katniss and Peeta. If they go for the romance, there needs to be enough screen time to address Effie’s change in a bigger nature and to have Haymitch realise that this woman means well—and genuinely means well. The older I get the more disappointed and weirded out am I by the movie’s portrayal of the ship when it could have been /so good/. Also, damn, I really think EBanks was a large reason for why this went the direction it did and please do not invite this annoying woman back. Ever.

I'm basically rambling out loud about the writer-y things that I'll never manage to do, so there's a cut to spare those unconcerned.
I know I keep bringing up that this ridiculous length of my Buffyverse continuation, and how I keep adding to it, but dagnabbit, this is something that kept me going for a long time, and I have an actual genuine enthusiasm for making my development of this universe in some manner be a legitimate THING, even if it's just knowing where things would go, even if they never leave outline stage.
It's also kinda nifty, or at least I think so, to include a few "what if" scenario type miniseries into things. Y'know, things of the "but what if things played out differently?" variety. Like, with the Buffy books, one of my disappointments with them was when the trilogy of "what if Dark!Willow was never stopped?" was put out, but ended up turning back around to the original episodes' ending all the same - the trilogy was about exploring what made this all different, but then just went back to the same original conclusion? (My understanding is that this was editorial mandate and not what the author had wanted, which I fully believe.)
So I get to have these little side stories that actually explore the concept of "everything changes" (or, well, would if I were doing more than brief outlining everything, but, hey, in fantasy world, I get to put all these together). These could never really have happened back in the day, since the actors would need time to breathe and all, and doing a full season of the original show AND a mini-series or two at the same time would definitely have burnt out the actors, but since this is all fantasy, I get to do it anyway!
And I also have bits and pieces that introduce concepts and characters I originally used much later into things - so now it's all a grand connection.
It also means that I'm gonna end up going through things and revamping my original ideas - y'know, oh, I had this idea I don't really like that I can swap out for something better, oh I realize now that this idea kinda fizzled out, maybe I can replace it... Granted, that's gonna be merry hell when I get to the stuff that I'm spinning off to its own separate thing, cuz it ate up time here, and it got these characters an extended major role there, and now it's all going over to its own thing, so that's a major subplot I've got to take out and replace...
I enjoy the writing challenge to it all, apparently having set this aside for the better part of a decade was a good call in coming in with original ideas, but it does frustrate me that this is never going to go beyond my own outlines, cuz... I want to have these in a finished product form!
It also makes me all nostalgic for that virtual continuation/series boom that happened in the mid-2000s. I found a few of them that are at least still accessible and made to save them to my external (which, granted, I may need to start looking into having a backup for my backup, since the thing's gotten to needing a repair scan after every time I transfer it to my laptop and back to my desktop, which does fortunately fix it, but... Well, I have anxiety issues in general). And sure, quantity isn't quality, but y'all know how it is with lost media - it's not necessarily about how good it is so much as saying you have it.
All of this does, however, make me picture that fantasy DVD case for all these things and how monumentally sprawling and out of control it would be to actually account for all these things.
And, y'know, this is just me focusing on the Buffy side of things. I've got a whole bunch of Star Trek spinoffs I could put this focus on, plus a handful of handfuls of others that I'd totally be down for putting together as well.
Dammit, just let me spend my time putting together all the writer-y things I want, from the fanfic-ish to the original! I don't function well as a human being anyway, this would all be to the benefit of us all!

MALMAISON MEDIA SALON SOIRÉE 7: NAPOLEON (1955)
Tumblr media
1. The Introduction
Hello, Neighbors! Welcome to the Malmaison Media Salon. Today we’re going to discuss yet another biopic about Napoleon! As if there isn’t a ton of them out there already...
Anyway, I’m talking about “Napoleon” a 1955 movie directed by Sacha Guitry, who also plays Talleyrand in it (actually he played Talleyrand twice, in two different movies). Looks like biopics about Napoleon and self-inserts go together quite well!
But, jokes aside, I first heard about this biopic while researching another movie about Napoleon (the Abel Gance’s one from 1927) for Jacobin Fiction Convention. I was unsure which review category the 1955 fits in, but I ultimately decided to do a Napoleonic review since, unlike the 1927 movie, this one barely touches on Frev so it wouldn’t make sense to call it Frev media.
So here we are. I got much luckier in my search for this movie than with the one by Abel Gance, as Guitry’s biopic can easily be found on YouTube in English, so most people in my audience shouldn’t have any trouble looking for it at all.
Personally, after a long list of failed attempts at cramming Napoleon’s life into either one movie or a short miniseries, I was a bit skeptical about the 1955 movie, but let’s take a closer look at it and see how this attempt turned out.
2. The Story
The story here consists of a series of key events in Napoleon’s life. So expect major campaigns, his time as First Consul, Frev, formative years, and so on. On paper, it sounds good, but the keywords here are “on paper”.
Unfortunately, this movie runs into a common problem. See, its length is about 2 hours yet it aims to tell as much of Napoleon’s story as possible. Yeah, good fucking luck doing that when there are just too many events to cram into a miniseries, let alone one movie!
Honestly, if you ask me, Napoleonic era and Frev are so eventful that our communities may as well do a full fucking series because that might just be the best way to portray our respective epochs without skipping over important events or rushing.
Of course, this biopic is not a series, which is why we get multiple confusing pacing issues and the story has to portray everything in a rapid fire type of way, which really didn’t allow me to get into the story or to empathize with the key characters, as there simply isn’t much time spent even on introducing them or at least telling the audience basic information!
However, I do like the creative choice of having Talleyrand of all people narrate the story. I don’t know why the idea of Talleyrand as the narrator is so funny to me, but it just is.
Moving on, as there isn’t much to add.
3. The Characters
As I said in my previous point, unfortunately most characters who aren’t Napoleon don’t get introduced or developed properly due to the rushed pacing. Also there’s too many characters which makes it hard to remember them all, especially for people who might be hearing about them for the first time.
But there are some moments I liked that are related to the characters:
- Ney promising Louis the 18th to arrest Napoleon but not doing so
- Ney and Murat commanding their own executions
- Josephine not being a bitch
- Napoleon giving Eugène the sword which belonged to Eugène’s father
- Marie Louise of Austria not wanting to marry Napoleon at first but warming up to him
These are the touches I liked. If only the characters had proper introductions that would make me care about them during those scenes...
4. The Setting
The settings are truly gorgeous, most likely due to this:
Tumblr media
Nice! I haven’t been to the aforementioned places but those who have might be able to recognize them.
Oh, and the costumes look stunning.
5. The Acting
Honestly, I think the acting is excellent, especially on the part of the two actors who played Napoleon. I also liked Guitry as Talleyrand, but it looks like everyone did their best with the role they had.
6. The Music
Gorgeous music! I love the fact that the melody of Ça Ira (a revolutionary song) plays during the scenes showing Frev. Yay!
Unfortunately, once again, it’s not enough to make up for the rushed story.
7. The Conclusion
Well, what can I say? I think it should be obvious by now that the Napoleonic era is just too eventful for one movie. It deserves a series of its own, because otherwise we get rushed pacing, characters who aren’t given enough time to become memorable.
Here the acting, music and settings are fantastic, but the clunky story and the flat characters ruin the entire experience, wasting the potential of the final product. Which is a shame.
But, with that, let us conclude today’s soirée at the Malmaison Media Salon. Stay tuned for updates and stay safe, my dear Neighbors.
Your Neighbor,
- Citizen Green Pixel

-------------------------------------------------------------
“Because. We kissed."
Kissed.
Did you hear him right? Did he just say you kissed? You two kissed? And you didn't remember?
Just the thought of it made you dissolve into fits of uncontrollable laughter.
A valiant effort on his part, truly. He really looked frustrated and confused that you didn't remember. What a brilliant actor.
"Phew!" you brushed the tears from the sides of your eyes and rubbed your nose with the back of your hand
"Right! As if I would ever forget kissing someone like you.” you gestured to him from head to toe, “Specimen.”
“Alright,” he crossed his muscular arms against his equally muscular chest, “I am one hundred and ten percent sure it was you and I’m not about to let you change my mind, madame.”
The challenge was clear in his voice and honestly? It was really hot, his whole stern and smug vibe actually made you forget that you were trying to defend your honour.
How could he just look like that? All tall and handsome and muscular? It threw you off your game. He looked like he was God's favourite.
"Aren’t we going to dinner?" you asked, now openly staring at his eyes
"Oh, god. Of course, you must be starving. I apologise." he dropped his proud stance and immediately grabbed your coat from the rack
Henry graciously helped you put it on, his arms lingered around you just a tad bit longer than needed but it was all very good.
Something must have caught his eye as he stepped away from you. He gave you a small smile and made a move to lean in.
Oh, was this happening now?
Okay, sure. What the hell right? Since he claims to have already kissed you before maybe he needed to be reminded.
You could do that. You knew how to kiss, you’ve kissed people before.
As he leaned in, the smell of his cologne invaded your senses. It was musky but also floral. Combined with his naturally clean, fresh scent, you could just picture yourself on a leisurely stroll with him in a field somewhere, the pristine air carrying the scent of earthy wood and spring flowers all around you. Henry would be gazing at you adoringly and he’d be in a soaked white shirt even though it was a sunny day.
Armed with that picture in your mind, nothing could go wrong. You were definitely feeling it.
You tilted your chin upwards, leaning in to meet him halfway, more than ready to feel those luscious lips on yours. You shut your eyes, just to make it more romantic.
His arms wrapped around you and you went in for the kill.
That’s when the worst possible thing happened. Well, perhaps not the worst thing but this was pretty fucking close.
Instead of the soft lips you were expecting, your lips met the soft material of his sweater.
Yes, that’s right. His sweater.
You, Y/N Y/LN, had just planted a big ol’ smooch on Henry Cavill’s sweater.
Your eyes snapped open and you wondered what you did so wrong in your past life to deserve this. How could you have misjudged the situation so wrongly?
The second Henry felt the tiny amount of pressure on his shoulder, he knew he fucked up. He had no idea why he didn’t just tell you that the collar of your coat was sticking up, why did he feel the need to straighten it himself? Now, what was he going to do? He didn’t want to embarrass you.
But, it was a little too late for that now, wasn’t it?
You both stepped away at the same time, seeming to look at anything else in the room but each other. It was nice of him to also feel embarrassed on your behalf but, you felt like everyone the world over was cringing out of their skin from secondhand embarrassment.
“So, dinner?” Henry offered you his strong arm, grinning at you like nothing happened
Was it possible for him to be even more perfect? As you looped your arm through his, you found out that it was.
---------------------------
The expansive cityscape was laid out before you from the secluded trellis covered terrace of the restaurant he chose. The view was beautiful, the lights of the city sprinkled across buildings, homes, and streets, the inky black and blue sky stretching far beyond.
Gazing out at it should have made you feel calm, at peace. But you were a bundle of nerves. Never in your wildest dreams did you ever think that you’d be on a date with Henry Cavill and you wouldn’t have imagined that he would be accusing you of forgetting that you shared a kiss.
“Look,” you rested your arms on the table, looking at him as seriously as you could without getting lost in his eyes, “I swear, if we really did kiss, I would remember.”
Henry studied you quietly amidst the hustle and bustle of the restaurant beyond the French doors. It was endearing to him, how quickly you would sometimes switch from confident assertiveness to awkward fumbling.
For you, it was a test of endurance to look past the god-given good looks and focus on trying to anticipate what his next move was.
Turns out, it was one in your favour.
“You know what? I think you’re right.”
You almost did a spit take with your wine. Thank God you weren’t wearing anything white.
Okay, act cool. That should be easy, right? You were an actor after all. Just be cool. Relax your shoulders, unclench your jaw, stop sweating.
"I must've been mistaken. I truly apologise."
He looked so sheepish, you actually reached over to put your hand on his. You tilted your head and gave him an understanding smile. A wave of relief washed over your body and to Henry, it showed. Your rigid posture finally loosened and you even managed to lace your fingers through his.
"I totally get it. I mean, with our jobs? We meet dozens of people everyday, it's not hard to be confused."
His heart leapt into his throat at the contact, it felt like his entire arm was covered in live wires but he would endure it just to savour your hand in his.
"Let's focus on our date, yeah?"
"Yes, absolutely," you nodded enthusiastically, "Please. Tell me all about you."
"Oh, but I'd rather hear about you."
You were flattered, really. But just in case this was never going to happen again, you needed to get him talking and sponge up as much information as you could.
"And you will, but let’s hear about you first.”
He wanted to argue but you were already looking at him expectantly and despite your short time together, he was already struggling to say no to you.
So, he talked, and talked, and talked, much more than he’s ever dared to talk in his whole life. And you listened, absolutely captivated by his eloquence, his intelligence, his passion, and his wit. Not to mention his voice, deep and silky and hypnotising. Why people thought he lacked personality was a mystery to you.
“I do love theatre,” he explained with a mouthful pasta. It was adorable, no questions asked. “I wish I had that courage and longevity to just deliver every single night for months on end.”
“I actually started out in theatre.” you nodded your head as he widened his eyes at you questioningly. “Yup. I did a decent run of The Tempest at the Yard a year back.”
That’s when the ball dropped. Time seemed to stop for Henry, his drink hovered in the air just as he was about to raise it to his lips. It had finally made itself known, his smoking gun. He faltered only for a second before masking his triumphant smirk with his wine glass.
One harmless little question out of his mouth had you turning as red as the cherry tomatoes artfully scattered in the salad that was set before you.
“Ah, yes. Didn’t you play Miranda?”
You stopped stirring your iced tea and furrowed a brow at him.
“Yes. Yes, I was. Did you catch a show?”
“I did. I was at the opening night after party as well.” he enunciated this part slowly and clearly, hoping that your eyes would spark with recognition
But they didn’t.
“Isn’t that a shame. We could have done this earlier if we crossed paths that night.”
Henry pursed his lips and nodded, mildly disheartened but nonetheless, he pressed on.
“I do recall meeting you though.”
This again?
You huffed and set your utensils on your plate. You laced your fingers together and looked him in his gorgeous ocean coloured eyes.
“Okay. If that is the night in question then I will admit that I… may have kissed someone but it wasn’t you.”
“Well, well, well…” he raised an eyebrow at you and you instantly coloured
It wasn’t one of your finest moments and you figured you would never have to dig that memory out of the vault but here it was.
“I know how this sounds,” you shook your head disapprovingly at him, “But it’s not. Okay. On God, it wasn’t you.”
Henry nodded yet again, narrowing his eyes at you. The silent treatment and judgy look he had on forced you to keep talking, which probably wasn’t the best idea.
“It wasn’t you, Henry. Okay? It was just some random dude in a nice sweater and a signet ring or something.”
Alarm bells started clanging in your head as your eyes swept over your dinner date. Nice sweater, check. A signet ring resting on his pinky, check.
“It wasn’t you.” you repeated in more of a whisper, more to convince yourself than anything else
Throughout your debate, bits and pieces of that night started to come back to you. The most embarrassing part came to mind first, it would probably be your saving grace but, did you really want to tell Henry Cavill what you thought you did?
“Am I really that bad a kisser? That you felt the need to completely erase it from your memory?”
His tone was joking but you could see in his eyes that he was a little bit hurt. It was going to be a cold day in hell if you were going to be the person to make Henry Cavill doubt his skills in the kissing area.
“I kissed a male prostitute that night, okay!” you yelled out in exasperation
Thank God your table was situated on the terrace or else a restaurant full of people would have been in on your little secret. As your voice echoed off the walls, you wrapped your arms tightly around yourself. How much embarrassment were you going to endure?
“A male prostitute?” Henry repeated slowly, clearly having a difficult time processing this new information
“Yes.” you groaned, leaning back in your seat and covering your face with your hands
---One year before---
The curtains closed to thunderous applause, whistles and standing ovations. Your heart pounded in your chest as you struggled to keep your breathing steady.
Did that really just happen?
You looked around at your castmates and wrangled them into a group hug.
“Did I really just do that?” you asked Marge upon meeting her backstage
“Yes, you did! Now go on and get changed. It’s after party time.”
With that, she sent you off with a smack on your ass.
You’d only known Marge for a few months since you arrived in London but you liked her already. It’s not like you had a choice though, really, she was the only one you knew.
“How about that one, that one over there?” Marge slurred, shoulders knocking into yours, less than discreetly pointing out some guy in the crowd of party goers
“Shh! Marge!” you giggled, more than a little tipsy yourself
Opening night was a smashing success, it was your first ever gig anywhere, really. You were so nervous the entire time, you thought you were doomed to fuck up and forget your lines or something but that moment never came.
“HEY! REVIEWS ARE OUT!” someone yelled in the crowd
“Here we go.” you murmured, knocking back your drink and tugging Marge along
The huge crowd gathered around your director, who was standing on a stool. It was a tight squeeze since a good chunk of the people who came were already hammered. Someone from behind shoved you forward and you rather inelegantly fell into the arms of the man next to you.
“Whoa there.” you could just make out the deep velvety voice above the murmurings of the crowd
“Oh, God, I am so sorry, I-” you trailed off when you finally laid eyes on your rescuer
Oh, wow.
You couldn’t decide which feature to focus on first. The captivating eyes that were a shade of blue that your alcohol-soaked brain couldn’t even comprehend, the strong chiseled jawline you needed a protractor to measure, or the perfect stray curls that fell onto his forehead?
Decisions, decisions.
“Are you alright? You almost fell.”
Goosebumps broke out on your arms as he helped you stand upright.
God, he was handsome, an observation you thought you had kept to yourself.
The tall man chuckled, still holding on to your forearms, “Thanks very much. I’m He-”
“And Y/N, my incomparable Miranda!” a booming voice interrupted him from the front of the room
“Fuck, that’s me.”
You broke from his grasp and fought your way through the crowds, leaving your hero looking out after you.
“Newcomer Y/N Y/L/N’s performance as Miranda is the glittering centrepiece to this refreshing, masterful take on an enduring classic,” the director read aloud, allowing the crowd to raise their glasses to you
You smiled at everyone, inadvertently meeting the eye of your tall handsome man.
When the crowd dispersed, you and Marge found yourselves back at the open bar, eyeing up every guy that passed by.
“Y/N, you’re on the fast track now. You killed tonight, now it’s time to pick your prize! How about that one? In the corner? Looks tall, shaggy hair…”
“Marge, that’s a ficus.”
“Huh.”
“Yeah.”
“Well, that other ficus has been looking over since we set up camp here.”
You followed the tilt of her head to the same guy from earlier, the achingly handsome one. He raised his glass to you and you waved sloppily back. It was the alcohol, okay? Open bar, what were you gonna do?
Marge whistled low, sizing him up from head to toe, “Y/N, that’s a male prostitute if I’ve ever seen one and I have seen a lot of ones.”
The fry you had chomped down barely made it halfway down your throat before coming back up again, “What? No! Marge, he’s not.”
“But he is. Y/N, that man is tall, hung, and handsome. There is no man that tall, hung, and handsome that isn’t either an actor or a male prostitute.”
“Tall, hung, and handsome.” you mumbled, raking your eyes over him as discreetly as you could
In your inebriated state, you completely forgot to ask Marge why he couldn’t have been an actor. Why did her mind immediately head for the strip club? And why did yours follow suit?
“Imma go and bag myself a stripper, Marge. Okay?”
“Yes! Use protection!”
Before strutting off or more like stumbling off, you downed some more booze which probably was not as good of an idea than you thought. Not even halfway to him, you decided that you were teetering in your heels a little bit too much, so you took them off.
“Oh. Hey there.” the same silky smooth voice from earlier greeted you
“Ah, fuck. You’re tall.”
Looking up at him made you dizzy, like standing at the top of a giant skyscraper and looking down at the very edge.
He chuckled and you watched entranced as his face just lit up like Christmas. You decided then and there that you would like to kiss the Christmas, very much so indeed.
The liquid courage in you was really doing its job. You took his hand and dragged him away from the party. This was fine, wasn’t it? It’s not like he was complaining, he looked rather amused actually. Things like this probably happen to him a lot in his line of work.
“Well, now you have me, what are you going to do with me?” he asked teasingly once you two were tucked away in a dark corner
The combined effects of the excessive alcohol, the high of your first successful job, and the way this sinfully handsome man was looking at you made your next move the easiest thing in the world.
You balled the front of his sweater in your fist and tugged him down towards you. He was too tall.
Who on earth was this ballsy, clumsy, beautiful, talented stranger?
Henry didn’t get the chance to ask before his lips came crashing down and immediately, wildfire.
A shockwave of frenzy ran through his body, he needed to feel you. He was all hands and lips and ragged breaths. His lips traveled down the smooth path of your throat, nipping and sucking as he went. You were putty in his hands.
“Jump.” he growled
You did as he asked and he latched his hands underneath your thighs and planted you against the wall. His lower half pressed into yours and you knew that Marge was right. Your hands raked through his hair and you reveled in the feel of him, strong, confident, in charge. His large hands made their way to your bottom and he squeezed gently.
A breathy moan escaped your lips and you knew you needed to have more of this man. Your fumbling hands made their way to his belt buckle but he set you down on your feet and held you steady.
“What..?” you whispered, suddenly disoriented
“I really should take you on a date first.” he panted
Sober, you definitely would have taken him up on his offer, male prostitute or not, but you were far from it and your head was still spinning so you thought you’d shut your eyes for a while and have him catch your unconscious form.
With you over his shoulder and your shoes in one hand, Henry made his way to his car and drove you safely home, relying on the satnav and your slurred directions.
He laid you gently in bed, brushing the hair away from your face. You snored in your drunken sleep and Henry smiled at the sound.
This was an encounter he was sure he would remember for a long time.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Well, that was me,” Henry nodded his head with his bottom lip jutted out. “Exactly as you remembered it.”
Tall, hung, and handsome, huh? That wasn’t anything new to him. He’s been described using far more… graphic detail, if his time searching his name on Tumblr was anything to go by. But hearing it come from your mouth turned him several shades of red.
You, on the other hand, had no words. Again. But you figured that it was all Marge’s fault.
“So, I suppose I was right?” he confirmed, unable to contain the self-satisfied smirk on his face
“Uh, yeah,” you sighed, absolutely exhausted from your little trip down memory lane. “Yeah, I guess you were right.”
Slowly, you met each other’s eyes. A moment passed before you both dissolved into fits of laughter.
“Do I look like a male prostitute? Did I exude that kind of energy at the time?” Henry guffawed, shoulders shaking
“God, I don’t even know how I thought that! I was super drunk, okay?” you covered your face with your hands, mortified and extremely amused at yourself
The laughter died down and you were left gazing at each other fondly. Dessert had long since been over and the night went on, the candlelights on your table and scattered around the quiet terrace intensified the feeling that was passing between you.
“Y/N?”
“Yes?”
You didn’t miss the way his eyes darkened and settled on your lips. Unlike all the other times today, you didn’t feel nervous, you didn’t feel like you were about to make a fool of yourself, you felt completely calm.
“Would it be alright with you if we picked up where we left off that night?”
Ever the gentleman. You smiled and made your way over to him.
“Hi.” you made yourself comfortable on his lap and you laced your arms around his neck
“Hello, there.” he whispered against your lips
It was probably not the best place to do this, in a restaurant where upwards of twenty people were just beyond the terrace doors but you were in your own little world.
You were endlessly thankful that you were sober for this, you would never forgive yourself otherwise.
When his lips finally met yours, you wondered how on earth you ever forgot such a feeling. It was gentle and soft, as most of these things start, his thumbs caressed that apple of your cheeks then he laid a chaste kiss on each.
You breathed long and hard as his hands splayed on your back, pushing you closer to him. His warm tongue traced the outline of your bottom lip before exploring your mouth, the taste of you mixed with the subtle taste of wine was exquisite and he wanted more. He drank you in, holding you flush against him.
“Wait.” you took his hand and led him to the far side of the terrace to an alcove enveloped in a curtain of lush vines
“When did you spot this?” Henry asked, breathless as you sat him down and straddled him once again
“On the way in.” you had the audacity to blush
“You had plans for me already?”
“A girl always comes prepared.”
Nothing would ever prepare you for the sight of his full length, once his trousers were lowered, it was over for you. Henry took control by shoving your underwear to the side and impaling you onto him. You inhaled sharply, screwing your eyes tightly shut.
“Are you okay?” he struggled to control himself, having you quivering on top of him was severely testing his restraint
“Yes. Please. Move.” all you could manage were monosyllabic answers
And move he did. It should be illegal to be this good.
The night air was cool but you were both slick with sweat, you two had lost your tops a while ago and Henry’s tongue swept across the valley of your breasts and marked his territory everywhere he could. His thrusts were enough to bruise you but you never wanted anything more than to feel him.
“Henry,” you gasped out as he continued to hit that spot that made you see stars
He could sense that you were close, you were tightening around him and gripping him like a vise.
“Let go, lovely.” he whispered in your ear, committing the way your face twisted into a mask of pleasure and desperation to memory
You rode him furiously, the sound of your flesh colliding over and over again mingled with your hoarse moans, you were certain that someone would hear you but at that moment all you cared about was reaching your peak and with Henry Cavill at the helm?
His large hand clamped around your mouth as you came, you writhed and arched your body uncontrollably as his thrusts became more erratic. He pulled out of you and began to finish himself off, he did not expect for your hand to join his and he did not expect to come so quickly once it did.
“Jesus.” he panted, reaching over to smooth your hair out of your face
You shivered, suddenly very aware that you weren't wearing anything at all. Henry helped you dress quickly and wrapped his own coat around you, rubbing some heat into your arms.
When you refused to look him in the eye the entire ride back to your flat, that’s when Henry started getting nervous.
It’s not like he could ask you if you enjoyed it? I mean, he could but that would make him look like an amateur and he would really like to think that he was no amateur in that area. So instead, he took your hand as you stood in front of your door.
“Y/N, I would love to do this again. The date, not the sex- I mean, I would like to have sex with you again but that's not what I'm after-Holy shit."
Oh, how the tables have turned.
Henry rubbed at his face with a hand and sighed, "Do you think you'd like to see me again?"
"Do you think you'd like to stay the night?"
Both of you asked your questions at the same time and you both looked taken aback at them.
"What makes you think I don't want to see you again?" you wrapped your arms around his torso and looked up at him
"You were silent the whole car ride?"
He looked so unsure and a little afraid that you couldn't help but squeeze him. How could someone be both heartbreakingly handsome and adorable all at the same time?
"I was just summoning up the courage to ask you to stay the night!"
"Oh thank God."
He swept you off your feet and threw your door open but, you didn’t end up in bed (you’d get there later), you ended up in the same place you started, on the couch, with him spectating and occasionally helping out as you played Witcher 3.
The next morning, you woke up to a text message and a forwarded article from Marge,
“HOW BEING A STAN GOT Y/N Y/L/N HER MAN”
YOU TWO ARE EVERYWHERE. CHECK IT OUT!  I TAKE CASH, CHEQUES, AND LAVISH GIFTS. YOU’RE WELCOME.
A muscular arm gently wrapped around your bare waist and a tender kiss was pressed onto your shoulder. You looked back at your handsome bedfellow and smiled.
You’d take a look at it later. Right now, you had better things to do.
