#i think it's just interesting to think about bc doctor who is so british
Text
do you ever imagine what it would be like if instead of just dubbing and losing all the britishness in translation, what had happened with doctor who was national adaptations like they do with game shows like masterchef or whatever or uh skam thats a better comparison, and every country had their own series of doctors, all at different numbers like if the dutch show spinned off when the english was at 4 or smth but we just started with our own dutch doctor number 1
and maybe they'd like start off just sort of copying stories and localising them but then as time goes on these national spin offs would you know start building on their own lore and seasonal arcs that would get removed further and further from the british original until it's like 2024 and you've got 15 national doctor whos running somewhat simultaneously all in different seasons and all preoccupied with INCREDIBLY different stories
it'd be like 'whos your favourite doctor' and you'd be like uh the polish 3rd or the brazilian 12th it's a toss up. what if some countries go through doctors way faster and theyre like on doctor 44 and youre like WHAT are they DOING to them
and can you imagne the fucking CNAONS can yuo IMAGINE can you IMAGINE the FANDOM when SOMEone decided to make looms canon and all the losers come out of the woodwork to say well thats not REALLY canon bc it's not the british version. imagine the localisations, the reinforcements of every countrys national history. what would countries who have more history being colonised than colonising do with gallifrey. how would every Important PartTM of the show be transformed by the perspective of another team. what even are identified as the Important PartsTM of the show. maybe one country decides the tardis should change appearance every week. maybe one country is like we're just gonna put all the edas on television. the amount of OPINIONS can you imagine

Hi! So this is gonna sound weird, but I’ve kinda been learning about Irish history backwards? Like, I started with the Troubles (bc of family involvement), then back to the 1916 rising which got me more interested in the people involved which took me further back and etc etc. I know I’ve been doing it “wrong” but I’m just starting to come up to the 1798. Do you happen to have any recommended readings or particular persons of interest to read? Any collections of primary sources would be more than welcome!
Secondary sources I would recommend:
The Year of Liberty by Thomas Pakenham - about the rebellion in general
The People's Rising by Daniel Gahan - about the rebellion in Wexford
The Summer Soldiers by ATQ Stewart - about the rebellion in Ulster
Wolfe Tone: Prophet of Irish Independence by Marianne Elliott - about Wolfe Tone
The Life and Times of Mary Ann McCracken by Mary McNeill - technically this is just about Mary Ann but I think it's pretty good for Henry Joy McCracken too because there aren't many biographies of him
Orangeism in Ireland and Britain 1795 - 1836 by Hereward Senior - obviously exercise caution on whether or not you think you can mentally handle this subject but book about loyalism during 1798
Castlereagh: War, Enlightenment, and Tyranny by John Bew - about Lord Castlereagh
2 things that I would also recommend reading about for context are the French Revolution and the British radical movement of the late 18th century. for the French Revolution 1 book I would say is good is Liberty or Death by Peter McPhee and for the British radical movement... the book The English Jacobins by Carl B Cone does a good enough job
Primary sources:
The Memoirs of Theobald Wolfe Tone by Theobald Wolfe Tone - title is pretty self explanatory. It's Tone's account of his own life + his diary
The United Irishmen, Their Lives and Times by RR Madden - this is considered to be the 1st history of the rising & was written with the help of many people who lived through it, so it includes a lot of first hand accounts. HOWEVER. beware that Madden was your archetypical mid 19th century Catholic Irish nationalist and the bias created due to that shows through in every single part of these books
Memoirs of the different Rebellions in Ireland by Sir Richard Musgrave - this is another very early history of the rising, also written with the help of people who lived through, also including a lot of first hand accounts. HOWEVER. Musgrave is like Madden's Orange counterpart in that this book is also wildly biased and should also be read with a degree of caution
Personal Narrative of the "Irish Rebellion" of 1798, Sequel to Personal Narrative of the "Irish Rebellion" of 1798, and History and Consequences of the Battle of the Diamond by Charles Hamilton Teeling - 3 accounts of politics in Ireland in the 1790s written by someone who as a young man led the Catholic paramilitary the Defenders
The Drennan letters (a collection of letters that Belfast doctor William Drennan and his sister, Martha McTier, wrote to each other between the 1770s and 1820s), if you can find them, are another great primary source on both the United Irishmen & on what life was like back then in general, as are the McCracken letters, which I know are available free online somewhere I just can't remember where exactly I got the pdf from
There are a lot of them but if you're interested in primary sources you might also read some of the political pamphlets/books that were going around back then -- the most famous that come to mind in this context are Wolfe Tone's Argument on Behalf of the Catholics in Ireland, Thomas Paine's The Rights of Man, and Edmund Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France but there are wayyy more than that and at least some of them are on the internet archive

tws ahead of time: venting, discussion of medical examinations of sex organs (pap smear), masturbation mention
so i am. very asexual. sex ambivalent but i’m really just not interested overall. i’m also afab. which means when i’m 21 i’m gonna have to get a pap smear. which is gonna SUCK
being trans makes this twice as bad. i’m low dysphoria but the idea of ANYTHING entering my body like that makes me want to cry. like i get panic attacks at the thought of having to put in a tampon (i’m a pads person) it’s like. bad. technically i’d be able to handle it (had a short period of time before realizing i was ace + trans where i thought i HAD to masturbate bc “everyone did it” (my parents gave good sex ed but normalized masturbation a bit too much lmao)) but i’d hate every minute of it
so the idea of a pap smear horrifies me. first off- i have to let a doctor see me half-naked. this part doesn’t bug me too much because . it’s a doctor and it’s completely non-sexual but i still don’t like the idea of anyone seeing . that
then i’d have to just fucking sit there while they put a fucking giant cold metal tool in my body so they can reach my fucking CERVIX???? and THEN they’d have to brush cells OFF of said cervix??? no. no no NO that gives me such bad anxiety it’s fucking insane.
i’m also terrified it’ll hurt because. i’m not gonna be sexually active and i don’t even fucking use tampons. and i KNOW that if i go to a good gyn then they will find ways to help me be less scared or feel it less but i still hate the idea of sharing that vulnerability. i’m a crier and i do not want to cry in front of a doctor because i’m scared of such a normal procedure. it’s less a fear of judgement and more just a pride thing i think. i know they deal with it frequently i’m just kinda horrified. the idea of coming out as ace to someone who has control over my health is also actually terrifying esp bc i live in texas
if i could i’d just get my whole uterus removed and solve the problem but apparently it “produces important hormones” that i don’t want to throw off balance so. guess i’m stuck
idk i need to talk to my mom about it (she gives good advice) or maybe my aunt (similar feelings towards sex as me) but god it just sounds so scary. i’m incredibly scared for it.
that being said if you have a cervix and are 21+ (25 if ur british) then you do need to get a pap smear once every three years. it may be horrifying but cervical cancer is way scarier. i’m sorry it sucks for us but it’s like life-or-death important. can’t really afford to skip out on it unfortunately :(
if anyone else has similar worries and/or has had a pap smear i’d love to hear about it in the notes. no pressure of course privacy n all but it’d make me feel less alone so if you’re comfy sharing. hope everyone’s having a good [time of day]

All I know about titles is that last year it was pointed out that the London crew call Jonathan just "Harker", while he calls them Dr, Mr and Lord, and that it's a class thing. Except from van Helsing who calls him Friend Jonathan because he's Like That.
It's definitely a class thing, though I think for Seward, I've noticed he also refers to Renfield and Van Helsing just by their last names as well, and he's arguably the same class as Van Helsing and Renfield is at least equal if not higher bc he's definitely upper-class while Seward seems to straddle the line between upper-middle and the lowest of the upper class, though the latter is obviously complicated by the doctor-patient relationship that Seward is not very good at either; so with Seward, I think there might also be an element of clinical detachment in a scientist trope sort of way, especially with the nature of his journal entries as notes and observations, and with Van Helsing, they're also friends.
Regarding Jonathan, the use of titles with him is interesting bc not only does it denote class relationships, but also the shift in his familiarity with the other men; just to be on the safe side, while there are implied spoilers above, I'm going to hide my elaboration under a cut for ENDING SPOILERS, so continue at your own risk!
I remember last year, people were disappointed that seven years later in the epilogue, Jonathan refers to Arthur and Jack as Godalming and Seward respectively bc it was interpreted as Jonathan still not being close to them and there was discussion on when he might finally do that - but taking Victorian British social conventions into account, the fact that Jonathan is referring to Arthur by his title without the Lord part and Jack as Seward IS a mark of close friendship and familiarity! Victorian men of a certain social class did not address each other by their first names or nicknames unless they had known each other as children, and since Jonathan didn't grow up with them, it's extremely unlikely he would ever do that.

thinkin bout ruth osullivan. . .how when she got married she was probably a little glad to change her name, bc it was probably around the time roy was at the height of his fame, and as much as she loves him it probably wasn't easy being a celebrity's sister. how roy *kent* being famous probably made her being a kent feel complicated, and changing it was probably a little bit of a relief, bc it would give her a fresh start and a chance to make her own destiny. how when she got divorced, all of those complicated feelings about being a kent were still there, and even if she wanted to go back, phoebe was an o'sullivan. just having a lot of feels about a character we saw one and a half times and whose first name we still dont know lol
I'm still super salty they didn't give that woman a first name when the most minor characters got names (even if only in the credits). Matthijs' daughter has a name, Nate's sister has a name, but Dr. O'Sullivan doesn't get a first name??? Ludicrous!
Anyway I do think it's interesting that she kept her married surname!! I wonder how many people would have made the connection about her and Roy, even had she kept Kent; it feels like a fairly common last name to me where most people wouldn't have thought twice. But I do wonder if she had the perception, when she was still a Kent, that she was always being compared to Roy or put into a spotlight she didn't want. Regardless I think she definitely kept the last name because she wants to share her daughter's surname and she didn't want Phoebe's last name to be Kent.
We have so few details on it, but I'm also curious about how adamant Roy is about protecting Phoebe from the press and spotlight etc. I would say very, and I think the fact that Dr. o'sullivan and Phoebe never attend his games and the team doesn't really seem to know anything about them supports it. But we also know Roy watches her a lot and goes around shopping with her and hanging out with her around Richmond and London, and I kind of find it hard to believe that all that is happening without it getting papped (or if there's rules about children in british media, at least stalker phone pics from fans posted to social media). I imagine "who is this mysterious child with famous footballer roy kent" would've made headlines at some point??? idk
As an aside I remember there was a long discussion in discord when the episode aired with her about whether she and Roy might be half-siblings and O'Sullivan is therefore her maiden name. Apparently in Britain it's unusual that her professional, doctoral name would be her married name with the timeline of when she would have gotten her degree etc. None of that really jives with my own headcanons about them so I personally ignore those details but you know, something to think about as an option if it appeals to anyone!

Hi darling 👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻. I know this is off topic
If i remember correctly you said English isn't your mother tongue, could you tell us how you learned to write in such a wonderful English? It's really impressive how wide your vocabulary is and the way you convey your characters emotions.
I promise this is my last request for today, can I be 🌑 anon?
Hope you have a nice day 😚
i love this question, btw 🥺 i like talking about this.
the answer is kinda long, so i'll leave it under a cut, but the tl;dr is that english was the only way i could enjoy my special interests, so my autistic ass just... learnt it to indulge in these things. it all led me to reading and writing a lot in the language, which was how i started developing my own creative writing skills.
i always say English was my first love, which is kinda funny considering i used to hate English as a subject in school (bc i couldn't understand it when i was like... 9 years old. it was taught to us as a 'foreign language', but the level of education wasn't exactly.... good. i could barely count to twenty and i knew some colours, that's about it lol).
anyway, when i was around 14 years old i got really into harry potter*. we're talking obsessive levels of being into it... and very quickly i realised that the best spaces online surrounding the series were in english. i ended up joining tumblr back in 2010, when the only available language to use it was english. got really into doctor who and bbc merlin, as well as british youtubers (charlieissocoollike, my beloved...) and i just overall started consuming a lot of media in english. i eventually started reading books in english (percy jackson, the hunger games...), also fanfiction in english, and at some point i just... realised i could understand what i was watching/reading very well.
it was sort of a natural progression, tbh. when i was 17 i was fairly proficient (not fully, i still made basic grammar mistakes, but i think it was understandable for someone that wasn't learning through formal education). i ended up going to uni to study to become a translator (i dropped out lol but that's a story for another day, if you wanna hear it), and my english just got better there when i started to actually study grammar.
by 21 i'd say i was fully fluent... and now i'm here.
when it comes to actual creative writing, reading is what got me the vocabulary i have (which could be way better, i'm sure), and actually sitting down and writing was what got me to where i am right now with my writing. it's a practiced skill, pretty much.
thank you for this question, it got me remembering nice things about my past that make me happy and i often forget about💜
*(for transparency, i'm not into harry potter anymore. i can't stand jkr and her terf-ass, so the series is completely tainted for me. i can't consume anything HP related these days, because all i can think about is how it was written by such a hateful, disgusting person. it triggers only negative emotions in me these days, which is really, really sad tbh)

(Feel free to answer publicly) I’m really interested in the terror but I have a couple friends I tend to watch shows with, they have some mixed to positive feelings on horror and creepy/spooky things as well as thrillers and prestige tv and the like (loved breaking bad and BCS) our group has some CWs around rape/roofies
Could you give me like a recommended breakdown/pitch for the show so I can get them involved and make them watch it with me (we are at a weird watch group crossroads where we have like 3-4 shows that we are watching that are only enjoyed by 2 but not all 3 members and need something for when everyone is together)
(first it did take me a moment to figure out that BCS is Better Call Saul and not, as google suggested, the british cardiovascular society, barclays bank, or the british computer society. i really am not a tv watcher other than like. a couple of highly specific shows.)
as far as the two CWs that you mentioned i can't imagine that there's anything that could be a problem. there is, though, a mention of somebody lying about coersion (and we know in canon that he's lying and the whole thing was consensual). there's also uh. the odd reference to drugs (and alcohol). but that's more because it's the 19th century, and if you went to the doctor and said "got a bit of a tummy ache, doc" he would reply "may i offer you some nice cocaine in this trying time?"
in any case! the terror is an adaptation of dan simmons' novel of the same name, which is a supernatural-ish horror story about the ultimate fates of sir john franklin's lost expedition to find the northwestern passages. (supernatural-ish in that while there are supernatural elements... there isn't much that's supernatural about the depths of human despar.)
it follows primarily not sir john franklin but captain francis crozier, the second-in-command of the expedition (and captain of erebus' sister ship hms terror). but it does also have a massive cast of men who i swear you will be able to tell apart eventually. on your first watch you will be saying "which of the three guys with prominent sideburns is this?" and getting it right... actually pretty often. subsequently, however, you will be going "THERE HE IS. THERE'S LIEUTENANT HODGSON." and pointing to a blur in the background. (i did literally do this yesterday watching the third episode.)
also i genuinely think the terror is like. one of the best written shows i've ever seen. partly because it has The Gumption to essentially start the show with "ready to find out how all the people you're about to meet are going to Fucking Die?", partly because of how much rewatch value it has. even knowing all The Twists and basically being able to quite vast chunks of the show, there's always something new.
also the writers and actors have. what i can only describe as a remarkable ability to take somebody who is not on paper particularly sympathetic but really make you understand them. like there is probably at least one character who you will initially look at and say "...eurgh. don't like that." but either come to Sympathise With or just want to take out of the show and let him sleep for about sixteen hours in a very comfortable bed.
and to be a bit pretentious for a second, which is only fair in a show like the terror, i think one of my favourite things about it is the synergy between setting and story/storytelling. on a naval ship most spaces have multiple purposes and there's nothing on board that isn't there for a reason. so even if a scene or a shot or a character (or a line -- i had a sudden moment of "billy? BILLY????" during my most recent rewatch of the first episode) doesn't seem to be there for a purpose... you'll see! maybe not for a couple of episodes but you'll see.
also pretty much all of the relationships between the characters are very much more complicated than "just friends" or "hate each other" or "lovers" or "captain and lieutenant" (or whatever). it's very interesting to watch and essentially keep track of "they're this but also this" or a slightly more straightforward "he literally just needs him and he will fall apart if they're separated". (then they get separated. this is two separate relationships that i'm thinking of.)
finally, if you like men... there's men. since we're in the royal navy in the 19th century there very much are men in this show. great numbers of them! at times the 19th-century-accurate facial hair Looks are a bit much (especially when there's one guy who conspicuously just has a completely normal 21st century beard), but if you can look past that there's truly something for everybody in amc's the terror.
actually finally, because i just thought of it: warning for gore and violence and... i can't quite explain it better than just "really, really overwhelming bleakness". (including some fairly understandable but still disturbing and quite difficult to watch responses to violence.) there are a couple of scenes that it might be better to spoil in advance to give yourself a pep talk before. (you will get warning for it -- there aren't any jumpscares but the waiting almost makes it worse.)

So in keeping with my Doctor Strange, Batch obsession, I decided to start watching Sherlock
Aaaaaaaannnd, I have many thoughts, I just finished season 2, sorry this will be a long one, be warned there are probably some unpopular opinions below 👇
I really WANT to like this show, it’s super popular, and maybe Batch in all his British voice glory really makes the whole thing, but I find that what I dislike about the show outweighs what I like thus far…
I just can’t get over the fact that thus far in the show there isn’t a single likable female character, except for Mrs. Hudson and even she is characterized as the ‘crazy little old land lady’ ( but I do love her to pieces don’t get me wrong)
It seems the show goes out of its way to make the females the villains or weak, Sherlock has an antagonistic relationship with every single female that he comes across
Molly for example, she deserves so much better, Sherlock constantly steam rolls her and berates her, he apologizes sometimes, but it doesn’t ever really feel genuine bc he continues to do it, her uses her for her access to the morgue and the lab! She had to make him say thank you for it but that wasn’t genuine either, he like didn’t understand
Molly really should have slapped him that one time he embarrassed her at Christmas and then Kissed her cheek! The nerve of the man, like that made everything ok
Molly and Sherlock had a little moment at the season two finale that I thought was promising but she essentially said ‘ I know you don’t love me and you love John but I would still do anything for you,’ gag, but I also understand that sentiment, having experienced unrequited love a few times myself and then he ended up asking for her help! which still seemed like manipulation more than genuine interest in her friendship :/
Also it broke my heart that after that whole exchange with Molly and asking for her help, she wasn’t listed as one of his friends to Moriarty, only John, Lestrade, and Mrs. Hudson :/
Irene Adler, who I loved the idea of , still ended up having to get saved by Sherlock, she sold him out to Moriarty, and then he ignored her texts bc he likes her or something?! I didn’t get that
You can also talk about the female Sargent Donovan, has had it out for Sherlock day 1 and she was the one to suggest that Sherlock was a fraud to Lestrade
In the season 2 finale they focus on the female jury member when Jim explains how he threatened all the jurors
Then when they were tracking the kidnapped kids it was the BOY that loved spy novels and painted his shoes in black light paint, the BoY was the clever one, not the girl
The girl screamed at Sherlock making Donovan think Sherlock had something to do with it when that was probably Moriartys set up 🙄
That female reporter from that crooked newspaper in the finale also antagonized Sherlock and stupidly bought Moriartys story 🙄
Sherlock even berates all of John’s girlfriends and dates whether out of jealousy or just shit writing it was kind of funny at first and by now to me is a tired cycle, yes we get you want his d and your jealous as shit
I’m sure there are probably more examples, but its TIRING to me, all the negativity toward women and it makes me not want to continue watching
And it’s disappointing bc I saw Moffat was a cocreator and I really liked some of the women that he created in Doctor Who, it’s just really surprises me that THIS is what he helped make?!
I know it was back in 2010 and I’m not mad about the gay subtext, I love it! I’m a bisexual person, bring on all the gay drama. Actually I find it frustrating that Sherlock and John just don’t accept their feelings and get it on already! You can do a slow burn gay love story and not women hate or shit on women in the process :/
Honestly if they had kept Sherlock asexual I think that would have made it more interesting and hilarious, but he is obviously in love with John and even has his flirtation with Moriarty all good stuff but again I flinch when a new female comes on screen bc it’s like ‘ what bad thing is she going to do now’ 🙄 what nasty thing is Sherlock going to say to her or ‘deduce’ about her, it makes me cringe
I’ve heard season 3 and 4 aren’t much better and I’d really like to finish the series and I probably will but I’ll probably be ranting about it on here again 😆
Honestly, it other people’s fanfics on here that are saving this show for me, so thank you fan creators 🥺🙏🏻
I’m really only in it for HIM 👀

Happy doctor who day everyone!! Next up in the nuwho rewatch is dalek!
(I'm also changing the "did i cry" bit to "did someone die" bc i don't cry often enough for that to be interesting and I've always meant to go through every dw episode and see what ones nobody dies in. People die in all the previous episodes, so I'm not going to go back and edit those)
Bechdel test pass: yes (rose and the soldier)
Did someone die: yes
Ooh the museum
Slitheen arm
Cyberman!
God nine has just the most desolate tone of voice and when he says "I'm getting old" aaagh
Theme song!
BAD WOLF ONE DESCENDING MY BELOVED
I like Goddard ngl
Like sure she's a henchperson for an ultra capitalist billionaire and is fine with the torturing of sapient beings but on the other hand she's funny so
Love that musical instrument that plays three whole notes
This is unrealistic bc Statten would not be specifying they're English; he'd just say British, even if they were Irish
Ooh here it comes
ArjdhfjafhfjjfsjfajgsjrasjftjafjajfatiatjssjtgksgkzgkstksjtsjfsfjsfsjfjafksfksfjsjsfsgkkgsstjjstgkskgssfksfkgkssjfsfjjfskgsgkszfkzgkgkskgsgksjfzfnahdafjskgzgmsgksfksyksktskgskgskgsjfsktsktgjatajtskfsjfjskgskgsjgskgsktsktsgksgksskggksgksgkstksgskkgsgksgmsnfDBAFJW
I'm fine
"I watched it happen; i made it happen!" I'm fine
"You destroyed us?" "...I had no choice" I'm fine
"And what of the time lords?" I'm fine I'm fine I'm fine guys I'm totally fine
His acting I'm
I can't
Wow van Statten you're super intimidating 10/10
God i love Rose's tank top so much
Adam, trying to impress Rose: aliens exist
Rose, who thinks he's hot: wow really?
Stkjrajfs i forget Adam said fantastic
Yeah nine maybe don't tell them you're an alien when they've been shown willing to imprison living sapient beings
But i mean you do you
God van Statten is such a bitch
Ngl the dalek was really smart and good at manipulating rose
They were like "hmm she's a friend of the doctor. I've got it just get her to feel bad for me" and it worked
Love the calculating of a thousand billion combinations like okay yeah sure but can it press the buttons that fast? Also why doesn't it lock after a certain number of incorrect attempts?
No not the west coast! That's where I live!
Speaking of which, glad to hear some good American accents
Love how he's like "you've got to kill it now" but like, they obviously can't
Yay Goddard for caring at least a little bit about the people the dalek is murdering
Good job Adam taunting the great big alien death machine
I really like this soldier. Sure hope nothing bad happens to her
Oh
Rose and Adam literally keep fucking running why are you just standing there
The electrocution was honestly a brilliant move like this dalek is smart
This is the episode where the daleks are most intimidating and best done
But like seriously though every time they bring back the daleks there's more and more of them and it just makes them less and less intimidating bc none of them can ever shoot for shit or do anything clever and they all fall for obvious bullshit traps (revolution of the daleks, anyone?) But like. This is how to do it. One dalek casually murders everyone in an entire base and it's clear it's toying with them. Like it could've just shot them all but instead it activates the sprinklers and electrocutes them all. It's (a) smart and (b) showing off. (Plus that way when they come back in big numbers for the finale it's actually intimidating and not just like oh okay look another army of daleks just like the last dalek episode) Rob shearman write every dalek episode when
Goddard so obviously wants to murder van Statten good for her
The dalek standing in the rain while doctor tells it to kill itself and the dalek tells him he'd make a good dalek is something that can be so personal
Unlike the other times a dalek tells him he'd make a good dalek, where it's just something they just say bc ooh we're so edgy, this one actually works and makes sense and has an impact. Like the doctor just told the dalek he killed all of the time lords just to rid the universe of the daleks; and the dalek is like "that's a lot of hatred there" like fuck if that didn't hit the doctor right the fuck in the chest damn
(And makes all the times they have a dalek arbitrarily say that to the doctor later feel even more hollow and useless by comparison but you don't need me to tell you that moffat sucks)
Anyway rip rose lol
Nine going off on van Statten is something that can be so personal
"I wanted to touch the stars" "you just wanted to drag the stars down and stick them underground underneath tons of sand and dirt, and label them"
Now the dalek having an identity crisis
Dammit doc really you're just gonna let the dalek out? Not a great plan
"Broken, broken, hair dryer"
Goddard is low-key hoping for the dalek to kill van Statten and same tbh (but it's more poetic what happens so)
God rose is so kind
The little tentacle reaching for the sun aww
Rose arguing with nine about killing the dalek is something that can be so personal
Love it when a companion takes moral issue with something the doctor does and argues with them and changes their mind
"Isn't that better?" "Not for a dalek"
This whole scene is just. I don't even have a word for the feelings I'm feeling
(God remember when over a decade later they wrote a story about the most ethical way to execute living beings and managed to fuck that up)
"Are you frightened, Rose Tyler?" "Yes" "so am I" I'm fine
Yay Goddard "some place beginning with s" girlboss
God this episode is so good
Anyway, up next is the long game, the title of which i had to look up bc i forgot it so that bodes well

- the fact that she asks if he's alone & she immediately goes "then start talking" so that he doesnt have to be alone anymore
- my brain is rotting
- "but you're still listening."
- i forgot about his dramatic speech about how he feels the rotation of the earth, the way it spins, the way it hurtles through space. "and if we let go... that's who i am"
- dramatic ass man, bound to pull people in with your mystery.
- ah back in the days of "internet murderer lunatic"
- Clive, please. Be a little bit normal.
- The way it's poorly photoshopped. Oh early 2000s
- "Death." be so serious rn.
- mmmm the CGI garbage can <3
- OOOOH GREEN SCREEN
- Clive please. You're scaring the hoes.
- Pizza. P-P-P-Pizza.
- Cannot believe she did not notice this man suddenly became plastic. Look at him you freak.
- "You can't hide inside a wooden box."
- Obligatory "run around the TARDIS and check that it really is Like That" moment
- The way he's so... patiently understanding that this is a lot.
- Then instantly reveals that he forgets to consider that the people around him are people.
- Him pouting with his arms crossed.
- "Must be completely invisible!" so true king. couldn't possible be right behind you. no way.
- God I forgot how much I loved this music. Not too overbearingly loud or intense, but enough that it helps build the tension & sense of action.
- "I'm not here to kill it."
- The way he rolls his eyes as Rose runs to Mickey.
- "It's an invasion, plain and simple! Don't talk about constitutional rights." OOF.
- Why is the plastic guy kinda 🥵
- "It wasn't my fault! I couldn't save your world, I couldn't save any of them." but he doesn't believe that & he never has.
- Clive about to get his shit rocked.
- RIP Clive. Should have been more paranoid.
- Jackie out here surviving solely because of her plot armor.
- "Just leave him!" and that's why she chooses to go with the Doctor and not stay with Mickey. Because the Doctor would never say that if there was something he could do.
- Rose laughing while her mom is panicking over the phone bc she's justso glad she's alive.
- "Thanks for what?" "Exactly." OUCH.

26 [Ukrainian/Irish AU] + 64 [Guns/Crime] 😌🍀🔫
not me asking you to send this one to me so i can talk about this AU that's been living in my notes app for weeks haha whaaaaat no way what a weird thing to do 👀🇮🇪🇺🇦
right, so picture this lads:
it's the year 1920 in rural county cork, ireland. the war of independence is a ragin'. brits out, come out ye black and tans, etc etc etc
cork is known as the rebel county bc of how batshit insane they went during the war of independence (actually, it comes from henry vii… they’ve been batshit about independence for THAT LONG)
ian gallagher serves as the local doctor - he’s in high demand, what with all the poverty and disease and starvation and the black & tans beating everybody up 😒
he earns a place in an english hospital to get Super Sophisticated medical training. he’s kinda conflicted bc fuck the english and all that, but he also feels like this is a chance to pull his family out of poverty
meanwhile lip is a rising leader in the IRA and he’s disappointed in ian for leaving when ireland is in such a critical point in the war for independence - and he’s all ah ian you’re not a real irishman how could you leave us now like?
and ian’s like bleedin jesus i’m just one small sort lip you don’t need me BUT when he’s about to leave, a local game of hurling is broken up by the black and tans (technically "group gatherings" weren’t allowed) and carl is very hurt
ian tends to him and realizes he can’t leave ireland now, so he joins lip in the IRA
fiona is definitely in cumman na mban (the women's wing of the IRA) and she brings messages to lip and ian while they’re in training 🥺 they speak irish together to protect themselves
irish war for independence was guerrilla war so it was a lot of ambushes and assassinations - lots of holding up british barracks and stealing guns, etc. ian is feeling more comfortable with his decision as the IRA is gaining some ground, WHICH LEADS US TO…
mikhailo milkovich is part of the mass migration that takes place in the wake of world war i - ukraine did not exist as an actual nation at this point, and ukrainian people were split between the russian and austro-hungarian armies. mikhailo fights for the russians bc he kinda has to, but dips as soon as the civil war in russia breaks out - he’s not about to get involved in that mess. he gets interested in the nationalist movement, bc fuck those overlords, but his land is in shambles, his family has scattered, and he has no home to go back to - this feels like a sign for a new life?
he wanders around europe for a bit, and eventually he finds himself in london, where he gets further radicalized by the anti-colonial/left wing revolutionaries living there. he hears of the cork soviet and the war for independence, and he decides to head over and stir shit up. the irish are kicking ass and taking names, and he wants to see what he can learn from them. the goal is to go back to ukraine and continue Stirring Shit Up
so he makes his way to cork, easily worming his way in with the trouble makers there. they bring him to lip and the higher ups, thinking mikhailo could be useful. he’s a good shot, he learned a lot from those guys in london, and he has connections to get them loaded up with arms and ammunition
the lads are suspicious of him, except for ian who is immediately like 👀 ian teaches him some irish, some medical training, mickey drops some socialist knowledge on him, they bond over these struggles for freedom and what life could be like for them once it’s attained 🥺
the lads get used to mickey, as they now call him, but they’re still reluctant to let him in fully. but he proves himself incredibly useful in organizing raids, and ian obviously finds that super hot - cue the sexual tension re: ian and mickey in flat caps, covered in dirt and/or blood, holding rifles, and hiding in the irish hills 😌 they start to get...... close 👀
but! after one of their raids on british barracks, the group is rounded up and arrested. there’s a spy in their midst ⚠️ everyone suspects mickey, but ian stands up for him - if it were mickey, they wouldn’t have arrested him too. some of the leaders of the group (lip included) are tortured for information, but the brits! get! NOTHING!
ian tries to tend to lip and the others, but it’s not looking good - everyone is in danger of being straight up executed. mickey sees ian panicking and orchestrates their escape - don’t ask me how, idk yet - and they all flee into the hills
everyone is fully on board with mickey now, very thankful so they are. ian and mickey have a Passionate Moment™️ once they are safe and flooded with relief
AND THEN! THE WAR IS OVER! celebrations! mickey and ian plan to stay in ireland while things get settled and then head to ukraine to start fucking shit up over there
but.......... the irish civil war begins almost immediately. the treaty does not give ireland full freedom and ian is not about that! the gallaghers are split - lip defends the treaty as a basis for freedom but ian says he didn’t get involved in this war for partial freedom for ireland. mickey backs him up, but this war is devastating for the family and the country. brother against brother, literally 💔
so the civil war rages on in extreme violence - ian and mickey are holed up in the mountains with the other anti-treaty soldiers, fighting against the very people they stood beside just weeks ago. they’re starting to wonder what this is all for, if the world they want can really be achieved this way... ian is getting especially depressed bc he’d wanted to be a healer, and now he’s a trained killer on the run from his brother and best friend
it all comes to a head when ian and mickey are captured while patrolling. lip, who is running the new free state troops in cork, begs ian to give up information on their activity - if not, he’ll be shot at dawn
ian refuses, and lip is beside himself. they spend hours fighting and crying and trying to convince each other to see reason, but they’re both so convinced that they’re on the right side. ian is ready to die for it, but lip pulls his last card - is he ready to let mickey die for it?
and he’s not, but he can’t betray his comrades like that. he won’t give anybody up. dawn is fast approaching and lip can’t fucking take it - he sneaks ian and mickey out of their cells and tells them to get the fuck out of ireland. there will be hell to pay for lip, but he’s not about to have ian’s blood on his hands. they have a gut-wrenching goodbye before lip shoos them away 😭
mickey and ian are reluctant to go, but they don’t want to risk each other anymore. plus, ian refuses to pick up a gun again after seeing his family and his country torn apart. so.... they go
now: where to do they go? maybe up north, where the war hasn’t reached. they work and organize labor and send money down to the gallaghers. maybe to london, where they find immigrant communities to thrive in? or perhaps america? the nationalist movement has largely gone dormant in ukraine by this point, and mickey doesn’t want to subject ian to another armed struggle anyways. and they’re not about to take on the fuckin ussr. but they move on and heal and study and keep organizing for freedom elsewhere - maybe they go to new york and start fucking shit up in the labor unions?
but one day they’ll go back to a free ireland and reunite with the gallaghers and they’ll be at peace 🥲
........ an deireadh

i know i was being a little reactive and passive agressive the other day when i was like it's more interesting when the doctor isnt autistic and im sorry about that i was being a bit of a jerk but with the distance of a few days and the soundness of mind that the mires of ficwriting and sleep deprivation will bring you i still stand behind that in kind of in the same way as what i said the other day about nonbinary
because to me being nonbinary feels sorta similar to being self-undiagnosed. like, if i say im not a boy OR a girl, what then? what does that call into question about the world you believe in? if i rock and tic and dont make eye contact, if i miss every third conversational cue im given and my modus operandi in social situations is to stand against the wall and observe, if im a disaster at crossing the road bc traffic is too complex for me, if i have all-encompassing interests that dont allow me to think about anything but it for months on end, and i say im NOT autistic, what then? what does that call into question about the world you believe in?
and like obviously the easy answer is to say im in denial, or being obstinate. you can say that. same way you can say theres only two genders and im a girl bc the doctor (the not-fun kind) said so.
and the maybe slightly more difficult answer is that any diagnosis is as much of a concept that was made at some point as any gender. someone decided to draw some lines and punt some people to one side of it and others to the other
i was wondering the other day when people who use fahrenheit start saying "it's freezing" if theyre speaking literally and not just mean it's very cold. because over here we're like "it freezes" once the temperature drops below 0. so i was wondering, for fahrenheiters does it start freezing at 0 too? do you have to wait until it's -18 celsius before you say it's freezing? but i asked @explaingravity and they said no it's from 32 degrees. when water freezes. "it freezes" when water freezes. makes sense right? that makes sense. but to me "freezing" meant 0. thats the freezing number. 0=freezing. but thats not true! thats JUST water. thats just water in like regular earthy conditions when you dont even put salt in it. other things freeze at different points. we just calibrated on water. and fahrenheit calibrated on... hang on a sec
0 °F, was established as the freezing temperature of a solution of brine made from a mixture of water, ice, and ammonium chloride (a salt)
brine, i guess? brine on one side, the human body on the other side. and like, both are similarly arbitrary right? to me 0 is the freezing number and to my american friends 32 is the freezing number, but neither is the freezing number, there IS no freezing number. you could say 0 is a boy and 32 is a girl
at what point does someone Become an assignation. when does it go from like a sticker on the skin, to something in their bones. when they choose it? when the doctor starts telling people "im the doctor"?
what does it mean to have the traits that people round up and put under a certain label, but claim you are not that thing? is that even possible? is the only way out of being that thing to redefine it? or just to move somewhere where it's defined differently? where the scale is calibrated differently?
i think doctor who, with its empire that is both great britain and alien, can be a nice way to examine and deconstruct concepts in our lives that we (in great britain or other places that share their concepts) take for granted. take as like, the divine right of kings, you know? i also think doctor who most of the time fails at this. regularly fails so hard it just reinforces its great british concepts. i think doctor who would be better if it dug deeper and if the doctor was not such a conservative (as in, inclined to preserve existing conditions)
and doctor who will still fail, and i hope one day that it will start living up to what i wish it was, but i also know this is a kind of big show and you have to limit the risks you take with it (see also my post about how i get they cant change the shape of the tardis but how i wish it would happen after 13 anyway) (you cant actually see that post, i have no idea where it went, it is definitely Somewhere but im never gonna find it again) (search terms are tardis + fire truck + iris wildthyme i'd guess)
but like, that doesnt stop me from still wanting to try and look at these deconstructions myself in fan stuff. im not super good at it bc i havent read a lot of books and dont really understand a lot of things yet but like. we can try?
i get 13 failed catastrophically at stopping being a cop and questioning the systems she was shown to be part of and victim of and complicit in, but like, we can still try to do that cant we? we can still try to question the things of our world we take for granted and try to kill the cop in our head?
tldr: i think not ascribing queerness and diagnosis to the doctor opens way more doors for interesting stuff than doing it. we can stretch our brains. try to come up with paradigms to see the world way differently than how we're taught to see it. theres way more potential there. same way theres way more potential in doctor who
shorter tldr: looms

What fandoms/ships do you write for?
oh thank you, op, truly.
i've been meaning to make a post like this but never got the time to, but now i have a reason to do it!!
let's divide this nicely by type of media:
book/book series:
percy jackson series/heroes of olympus/magnus chase/the kane chronicles/the trials of apollo-anything rick riordan basically-i only write the canonical ships, but i'm willing to try rarepairs as well
the harry potter series (books and movies)-my ships include drastoria, jily, hinny, scorlily :))) also willing to do certain rarepairs like daphnextheo and the like
the hunger games series-mostly really finnick x annie tbh, but willing to do katniss x peeta and works with johanna as well
divergent- same thing, mostly canonical pairs
the maze runner series- primarily thomesa actually
the lunar chronicles- the canonical pairs again
oh, any other popular series works as well like the chronicles of narnia
there may be other ya series or just book series im missing. you can prompt and ask and i'll probably have read it. or dm me as well!! my dms are always open!!
movies/movie series:
any book to movie adaptions are fair game.
inception- i'm obsessed with arthur x ariadne and saito x cobb, dont @ me
mcu!!! i'll write for tasertricks, drukkari, yonvers, sambucky, stucky, stony, pepperony, thorbruce, gilgamesh x thena, shangchi x katy, fosterson!!! all of those are fair game. otherwise, while i'm an avid watcher for the whole universe and i'm familiar with all the characters, i may or may not write for them. if it's a tv show or a movie, send me a prompt, and i'll 9 to 10 odds answer it and write something.
actually, also realized i'd write dc-verse too. diana x steve, bruce x clark, clark x lois, the usual. i do both current dc verse, and the nolan movies (for batman) and even older like the michael keaton movies. i actually watched them all, so idm.
any and all romcoms and chick flicks. like 10 things i hate about you, yes. legally blonde, yes. dont even think twice and just ask.
tv shows (american/british):
sitcoms!! love them.
here's the ones i'll write for: parks and rec (benslie my beloved), nhie (benvi ples), the office (pam x jim mostly but angela x dwight too!), the good place (literally anything. just no eleanor x jason, like that's the only notp), b99 (peraltiago, im a whore). send me a sitcom and i've probs watched it tbh-superstore, kim's convenience, and whatnot. all of them work.
any mcu show or dc-verse show. all of them are fair game. i'm into cloak and dagger, arrow, the flash, jessica jones, daredevil. yk your usual
for british tv shows, it's your usual. sherlock (sherlolly mostly but johnlock works too), merlin (literalLY ANYTHING-they're all so hot), doctor who (10th doctor and rose, im basic yes).
shows/graphic novels (other):
i write other bc this includes anime, manga, kdramas, jdramas, cdramas, t-dramas, and even thai dramas. so im a woman of wide interests as you can see.
anime/mangas:
kaichou wa maid sama- usui x misaki
ouran high school host club- anything with kyoya. i have mostly read oc or reader inserts and i'm not ashamed.
kiss him not me- all ships are fair game, but i prefer the GAY ONES.
your lie in april-canon only ples, and i dont acknowledge the ending so [redacted] doesnt happen
blackbird! i love the main couple, but like im in love with zenki ngl
seirou opera! main couple,,,, enemies to lovers vibe so true
actually any romance manga is fair game, i'm an absolute hedonist when it comes to romance- fluff, smut, angst, i take it all.
wolf girl and black prince- ik it's bla bla blah, dont @ me. i'll write kyouya x erika.
kdramas:
i'm not even joking when i say this but literally anything.
anything i've already written. anything that has aired after 2010 is fair game. i'm obsessed is an understatement.
do not even hesitate please! drop that prompt! ships, well, usually i write canon. that's the only caveat. i write canon. (dm me bc i have some cross-show ships)
actually i'll write for lots of kmovies as well.
thai dramas:
i liked u-prince dont @ me. i do not see it. and i will write it.
and most recently, f4.
for taiwanese dramas, chinese dramas and japanese dramas, drop me a dm or an ask with a prompt and i'll contact you depending on whether i've seen it.
so yeah,,,,, that's all :)))) hopefully this gives you some prompting cushion, op

this week i read...
Darling, Keep the Lights On (Until I Get Home) by capsicleironman  💙
Summary: When Steve Rogers is awoken from the ice early, he is assigned as the personal assistant to Tony Stark, the man on TV with the strange glowing light in his chest. The plan was simple - protect and gain intel. It was supposed to be just another job, but then again, nothing in Steve's life has ever gone according to plan.
Iron Man 2 Divergence where Steve ends up working for Tony instead of Natasha, and his interest first in the arc reactor and then in Tony himself, leads him through the events of the Avengers, Iron Man 3, and Captain America 2.
17k words
It's Only Half Past (The Point of Oblivion) by LadyHabren (equalopportunityobsessor)
Summary: "I think it's generally agreed that all of Steve's senses are powered up by the serum? He can hear people whispering on the other side of the room, probably sees a hell of a lot further, etc.
But there are definite downsides. How does Steve control this side effect of the serum?"
Captain America is more than a man - he is a hero, he is an ideal, he is pure muscle held together by patriotism and moral fibre... And not even Captain America can fight it when his own brain turns against him.
4k, sentinel/guide au, not set in mcu,
Do-Over by gottalovev  💙
Summary: Steve woke up six months ago into a future that leaves him indifferent. There is work, and not much else. His current mission is a basic search and rescue operation to retrieve an American who was kidnapped by a terrorist group ten days ago. He won't let the fact that the hostage is Howard's son be a distraction.
14k words, ironman 1 - 2 but with steve on it!,
Calls Me Home by steve-capsicle-rogers (adorable_lab_rat)

blood, Lies, and Love by Ridley160

No one bothered to tell him that the serum would change him into a monster that needed to feed on the blood of the living for survival. Now he has woken up 70 years in a future where there are more like him and his affliction is now seen as gift. Only Steve is convinced that he is at his core still just a monster.
Then he meets the brilliant, quirky and charismatic Tony Stark, the only person in this crazy new world that seems to understand Steve's misgivings about what he is, but Tony is haunted by something. A secret he has carefully guarded for many years that forced him to push everyone away.
33k words in 13 chapters, steve is cap + a vampire but tony isnt ironman,

scientific Heresy by antigrav_vector
Summary: In the process of running the particle accelerator in his basement and fixing the arc reactor, Tony finds himself flung into the past where he has to take on a fight not his own if he wants to get home to stop Vanko. At least he had a chance to replace the old rector that had been killing him with the new one before everything went sideways... But now he has no choice but to face off with family, friends, and old heroes, and none of that sounds remotely appealing. Well, okay, getting to meet them all during their glory days kinda does.
But as it turns out, they're not exactly what he imagined, and his path home is a lot longer than he'd hoped it would be.
And a lot more complicated.
34k words in 12 chapters, time travel au @ cap 1 and ironman 2, steve/tony/bucky

Coming Up Roses by NobodysBloodyPrincess  💙
Summary: Those with a death wish referred to the High Commander’s infatuation with the late Tony Stark as an ‘obsession.’ They were wrong. It had to be more than that, after all there was no word for what the High Commander was about do in the name of making things right.
No one gets a redo of life… no one except High Commander Rogers that is. Everything is coming up Roses and Sunshine for him. After all, he has a dream and it’s going to come true.
41k words in 3 chapters, beautiful but a bit dark and sad, just like the author said: “‘i’ll be with you till the end of line’ but stony”, definitely one of the best fic i’ve read because THEY ARE HAPPY T_T
The One With Bucky's Biggest Fan by justanotherpipedream
Summary: Steve still can’t believe how long it took for him to notice. It wasn’t a secret really, just something that no one had cared to ask...it honestly took Rhodey pulling him aside and pulling out an old photo album, before Steve really understood.
Tony Stark was a Bucky Barnes fan.
(aka The one where Tony is the biggest Bucky Barnes fanboy, Steve is a supportive boyfriend, and Bucky is perplexed by it all.)
2k words, it’s all in the summary
Sins of the Mother by skullshy  💙
Summary: All she could see when her eyes closed was Steve’s face in the courtroom. Stern, pained— with that fucking all-American self-righteousness.
Toni wondered for years whether it would have made a difference. Told him that she was pregnant, that Ultron was to protect their baby, and how sorry she was.
On her worst days, she imagined it wouldn’t have mattered.
23k words in 23 chapters, female tony stark, civil war (or age of ultron?) canon divergence

4k in 6 chapters, mythology au
I don't think there's a manual for this by itsallAvengers
Summary: So. His son can stick to things, apparently.
If only Tony had realised this before he'd caught him hanging off the 89th floor of the tower.
Well. Parenting was never going to be a smooth road, was it?
2k words, stony adopts peter parker and then they become superfamily
For Your Eyes Only by SarahHBE

Summary: When Tony Stark was seventeen years old, he built his first AI. On that day, he ceased to be his father's creation, and became a creating force in his own right.
That one act likely saved his life, and not always in the most obvious ways.
84k words in 8 chapters, stony but mostly looking through his AI bots a.k.a. jarvis and dum-e, definitely one of the best fics ever!
Bewitched, Body and Soul by iam93percentstardust

But the peace is shattered when his oldest friend stumbles into his home and into his life, seeking an escape from an arranged marriage to a cruel lord. Steve provides that escape but finds himself engaged to be married instead. This wouldn't be a problem - except that Steve is, always has been, and always will be deeply in love with Tony Stark.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You're suddenly in a beautiful part of the park. You didn't see this on your little mini tour, but it was magical. Spencer took you over to a giant tree on a small hill off the pond. The light from the moon made the water twinkle as the two of you sat under the tree. You felt like you were in a fairytale, and this was like a forest filled with fairy magic. It had rained a bit sometime in the late afternoon, so the ground beneath you and the leaves on the trees sparkled with dew drops. The sight of it all filled you with wonder. The night hadn't even really started yet and already you wished the sun never came up again. This couldn't end.
Spencer sat against the tree as he rummages through his bag to find his pen. "I'm speechless," You said as you sat down diagonal of him, "This place is breathtaking."
"I tend to come by here to read when I can't sleep or during the day having trouble on a case," said Spencer, "I found this spot around the time I first joined the BAU. It keeps me grounded."
You grab your pen out of your bag and hold it in your hands, waiting for Spencer. He finally finds his in the bottom of his bag and takes it out. You click your pens on and Spencer froze, not knowing what to do.
"Do we...cheers?" He asks, "Like we do when we drink?"
"Not usually, no," you chuckled, "But if you want to we can."
"You sound like you've done this before, Y/N."
"Meh, I experimented a bit in high school and college. But I never did it everyday like my classmates. Just here and there if I was really stressed."
Spencer brings his pen close to yours. "Well, cheers!" He says awkwardly.
"Cheers!" You giggle.
You both take three or four hits. On the last hit, Spencer started coughing. "Did you accidentally take a really big hit?" You ask.
"I think-" He coughs again, "-so!"
After his little coughing attack, you both laugh. You shift your weight onto your elbows. Legs straight out, you let the high take over your body. Spencer puts his head against the tree. He takes a couple more hits and let's it hit him. You start to feel the tingles again through your body and your eyes getting heavy.
"I wonder what the percentage of these carts are," you said, "I should ask Garcia."
"It must be a lot if I already feel like I smoked a whole blunt by myself."
"Well I was gonna that it's just because you're a beginner so you'll be a lightweight, but now you sound like you've done this before, Doctor."
"I swear I just know my research! I've never smoked before last night."
"Mmhmm, surrrre," you said as you started to get up from the ground, using the tree as support, "I'm sure it was just for that paper."
You grab your bag and rub the grass and dirt that was on your pants. You give a hand to Spencer as he gets up and you start heading outside of the park. You both stood there, looking around. "So, is there anywhere you'd like to revisit?"
You think for a moment. "How about the Lincoln Memorial?"
"Perfect!"
He lends his arm out and you link yours with his as you walk to the Lincoln Memorial. There was a nice cool breeze as you walked under the city lights, your blurry vision making it feel like you were in a movie. You looked up at Spencer and saw that his eyelids were a little bit lower than usual. You felt panic hit you as you unlock your phone and open snapchat. Turning the flash on, you look at the top of your phone and took a photo. You looked at your eyes and noticed they were a bit pink, but nothing to worry about.
"You ok?" asked Spencer.
"Yeah, I'm fine. My eyes get red easily when I'm high so I'm just checking."
"My dear, you look quite marvelous if I do say so myself!" He says, using a british accent, which made you laugh.
Finally, you made it to the memorial. You debated on climbing all those steps to the top, but Spencer made a bet that he could beat you to the top, and you weren't going to back out of a challenge. You both speed up the steps but Spencer beats you.
"Who's the pussy now, huh?" Spencer teases from what you said the night before, out of breath.
You put your hands on your knees, trying to catch yours. "Very funny, Doctor."
Once your breathing went back to normal, you slowly walked closer to the statue, admiring it. "You know," you began, "While my love for crime fighting was my whole life, I had a small interest in President Lincoln. I have no clue why, but I've been reading books about him since I was 4."
You paused for a moment, then turned around to face Spencer. "I have a fact for you, Doctor," you began, but then Spencer cut you off.
"You know you can call me Spencer or Spence, right? Come to think of it, you're the only one who calls me Spence."
"Ok, well Spence,"  you restated, "Have you heard of the theory that he might've been a closeted gay or bisexual man?"
"No actually, I haven't heard much on it only that it was debunked."
"That is true, but if it wasn't debunked I'd see him more as a closeted bisexual man, not gay."
"Why do you say that?" asked Spencer.
"Because people always forget about it. Bisexuality is real. He truly loved Mary with all his heart and would do anything for her, but I'm sure he questioned his sexuality at some point and just never went deeper into it."
You paused again, seeing if he was paying attention. You then turn back to face Lincoln and continued, "Take Freddie Mercury, for example. Now when he came out to his Mary, he came out as bisexual. But the public just took it as that he was gay because bisexuality wasn't seen by the public as a real sexuality, even Mary. It makes me angry at how long biphobia went on for. As someone who is bisexual, I don't want to feel like a ghost. I want to feel real."
Spencer slowly walks up behind you and puts a hand on your shoulder. He turns you around and you look up at him with glassy, pink-colored eyes. "Y/N, you are real. Everything about you is to me."
You put your hand on top of his, not breaking the look into each other's eyes. Or well, what you could see through his eyelids.
*The two of you then headed down the steps carefully and continue on your tour. But it slowly ended as you ended up walking down the empty streets. At one point, you ended up on cobble road. The two of you were pretty baked, as you would take more hits whenever no one was looking or there weren't too many people walking or driving. Spencer began to act like he was on a tight rope as he walked along parking blocks. He held your hand for support, trying not to fall and twist his ankle.
*You felt content. You never really experienced something like this before, but you always dreamt about it. You never really went out much when you were in school. You focused all your time in your room, working  on schoolwork and keeping up with what Rossi was doing in the BAU and the cases they were working on.  Rossi was like an idol to you. Ever since you met him, you wanted to do what he was doing; Saving people and getting the bad guys, protecting citizens. But you always dreamt of having an adventure like this with a true friend, and even though you had only known Spencer for a week now, he already was like that true friend.
*But you were also feeling something more. There was something about Spencer holding your hand that just felt...right. It was so hard to explain, even to yourself as you tried to figure out what you were feeling exactly. Maybe it was just the high you were feeling, but looking at his face, Spencer seemed to be quite cute. So cute, that you felt butterflies.
*He jumps off a parking block under a tall street lamp and grabs your other hand in his. He looks down to you as you look up. Finally, his lips lock with yours and you don't stop him. You kiss him back as your arms wrapped around each other, feeling every inch of each other's bodies.
Spencer breaks the kiss and cups your face in his hands. "Do you want to continue our little fun we had the other night?" he asked, almost in a raspy tone.
You nodded and kissed him again.
rough ranking of series 11
Tumblr media
ranking scale:
okay - a fine episode of doctor who, but nothing outstanding
tolerable - a serviceable episode of doctor who although would probably give it a miss on rewatch
bad - a notably flawed episode, needs another draft or so
awful - extremely bad, in need of an extreme rewrite or scrapped altogether
an insult to the show - let’s hope these are next episodes to go missing
episodes are being ranked in comparison to the revived series as a whole, not just within the chibnall era itself. rankings aren’t definitive as i am very indecisive and they are all very bad.
rosa: has a somewhat attempt to make social commentary on the topic but ultimately doesn’t say much. extremely weak antagonist. rosa parks doesn’t really get to be involved with the adventure like historical figures in previous episodes and falls into the background quite a bit. although the doctor and companions do play an active role in the story so that’s a plus.
demons of the punjab: a very passive episode, the doctor and companions don’t really make a big difference to the story being told. completely glosses over the atrocities committed by the british, unclear what the message of the episode, don’t stereotype people???
the witchfinders: if this is social commentary on sexism it is a pisspoor attempt. fails to fully acknowledge sexism of the time and reference to the doctor’s gender is embarrassing. little contribution from the companions. an interesting premise but fails to hit the mark.
interesting that all of the historicals make their way up to the top of this list. although as with all of them, i feel like they could have been pure historicals without the alien threat, as they often end up feeling kinda stuffed in.
the woman who fell to earth: suffered from too many spinning plates. unfortunately chibnall proved everyone right with having too many companions at once. with a new doctor, three new companions and an impactful character death all to fit in 60 minutes. fortunately he manages to do this by just completely ignoring characterising the three companions, excellent work. it goes in the awful category bc i can’t let slide forgetting the characterisation of the companions, regardless of how chibnall sees doctor who, the companions are in fact essential to the show and do in fact need to be actual fleshed out characters.
resolution: would have gone a little higher but the awful handling of ryan and his dad’s relationship is umm awful. also the solution of the microwave is a joke. the companions don’t contribute much.
the battle of ranskoor av kolos: an underwhelming ‘finale’. really overestimated how much the audience cares about tzim sha.
it takes you away: very dull, doesn’t hit any of the emotional beats it should do. companions don’t contribute much.
the ghost monument: a second attempt to really characterise the doctor and companions completely wasted. this is the pivotal point in the story to start to establish and develop the doctor/ companion relationship. by now the companions should be proving themselves worthy of travelling with the doctor and it should clearly establish why the companions would want to travel. very dull story, an interesting premise/ concept but again wasted.
arachnids in the uk: i know this ends up at the bottom of most people’s lists and rightly so, however it just doesn’t infuriates as me as the other two. still awful, and dull.
the tsuranga conundrum: this episode makes me seethe. just the completely lack of care for the companions the doctor has is insulting!! i don’t think it’s out of line to say this is out of character for the doctor. anyway here’s the twelfth doctor saying i had a duty of care.
Tumblr media
kerblam!: fundamentally the episode doesn’t make sense. it sets the whole thing up as going in one direction then at the end makes a shock twist to go in the completely opposite. and the doctor defends capitalism so immediately makes it to the bottom. pete mctighe please never write for doctor who again you capitalist bootlicker.
