Naming International POC Characters: Do Your Research.

Note how it says, “Submitted names are contributed by users of this website. Check marks indicate the level to which a name has been verified.” Do you see any check marks, OP? 

What language is this, by the way? If we only count official languages, Ethiopia has 5: Afar, Amharic, Oromo, Somali, & Tigrinya. If we count everything native to that region? Over 90 languages. And I haven't even mentioned the dormant/extinct ones. Do you know which language this name comes from? Have you determined Kazuki’s father’s ethnic group, religion, and language(s)? Do you know just how ethnically diverse Ethiopia is?

To All Looking for Character Names on the Internet:

Skip the name aggregators and baby name lists. They often do not cite their sources, even if they’re pulling from credible ones, and often copy each other. 

If you still wish to use a name website, find a second source that isn’t a name website. 

Find at least one real life individual, living or dead, who has this given name or surname. Try Wikipedia’s lists of notable individuals under "List of [ethnicity] people." You can even try searching Facebook! Pay attention to when these people were born for chronological accuracy/believability. 

Make sure you know the language the name comes from, and the ethnicity/culture/religion it’s associated with. 

Make sure you understand the naming practices of that culture—how many names, where they come from, name order, and other conventions. 

Make sure you have the correct pronunciation of the name. Don’t always trust Wikipedia or American pronunciation guides on Youtube. Try to find a native speaker or language lesson source, or review the phonology & orthography and parse out the string one phoneme at a time. 

Suggestions for web sources:

Wikipedia! Look for: “List of [language] [masculine/feminine] given names,” “List of most common [language] family names,” “List of most common surnames in [continent],” and "List of [ethnicity] people."  

Census data! Harder to find due to language barriers & what governments make public, but these can really nail period accuracy. This may sound obvious, but look at the year of the character's birth, not the year your story takes place. 

Forums and Reddit. No really. Multicultural couples and expats will often ask around for what to name their children. There’s also r/namenerds, where so many folks have shared names in their language that they now have “International Name Threads.” These are all great first-hand sources for name connotations—what’s trendy vs. old-fashioned, preppy vs. nerdy, or classic vs. overused vs. obscure.

Luckily for OP, I got very curious and did some research. More on Ethiopian & Eritrean naming, plus mixed/intercultural naming and my recommendations for this character, under the cut. It's really interesting, I promise!

Ethiopian and Eritrean Naming Practices

Haile (IPA: /həjlə/ roughly “hy-luh.” Both a & e are /ə/, a central “uh” sound) is a phrase meaning “power of” in Ge’ez, sometimes known as Classical Ethiopic, which is an extinct/dormant Semitic language that is now used as a liturgical language in Ethiopian churches (think of how Latin & Sanskrit are used today). So it's a religious name, and was likely popularized by the regnal name of the last emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie (“Power of the Trinity”). Ironically, for these reasons it is about as nationalistically “Ethiopian” as a name can get.

Haile is one of the most common “surnames” ever in Ethiopia and Eritrea. Why was that in quotes? Because Ethiopians and Eritreans don’t have surnames. Historically, when they needed to distinguish themselves from others with the same given name, they affixed their father’s given name, and then sometimes their grandfather’s. In modern Ethiopia and Eritrea, their given name is followed by a parent’s (usually father’s) name. First-generation diaspora abroad may solidify this name into a legal “surname” which is then consistently passed down to subsequent generations.

Intercultural Marriages and Naming

This means that Kazuki’s parents will have to figure out if there will be a “surname” going forward, and who it applies to. Your easiest and most likely option is that Kazuki’s dad would have chosen to make his second name (Kazuki’s grandpa’s name) the legal “surname.” The mom would have taken this name upon marriage, and Kazuki would inherit it also. Either moving abroad or the circumstances of the intercultural marriage would have motivated this. Thus “Haile” would be grandpa’s name, and Kazuki wouldn’t be taking his “surname” from his dad. This prevents the mom & Kazuki from having different “surnames.” But you will have to understand and explain where the names came from and the decisions dad made to get there. Otherwise, this will ring culturally hollow and indicate a lack of research.

Typically intercultural parents try to

come up with a first name that is pronounceable in both languages,

go with a name that is the dominant language of where they live, or

compromise and pick one parent’s language, depending on the circumstances.

Option 1 and possibly 3 requires figuring out which language is the father’s first language. Unfortunately, because of the aforementioned national ubiquity of Haile, you will have to start from scratch here and figure out his ethnic group, religion (most are Ethiopian Orthodox and some Sunni Muslim), and language(s). 

But then again, writing these characters knowledgeably and respectfully also requires figuring out that information anyway.

Kit’s Essential Mods to Enhance your Overall Gameplay

I really love The Sims 4, but I love The Sims 4 because I play a heavily modded game. This is a list of all the major mods I currently use to ✨ elevate ✨ my TS4 gameplay.

This does not really include anything for family gameplay or occults -- I tried to stick to “core” gameplay overhauls. You can find my list of recommended mods for school years here.

Preface

I wanted to put this at the top because it’s a really important step but so many people don’t know or forget about it:

Whenever you are changing out mods, adding new ones, or updating, always remember to clear your caches. So many miscellaneous problems are solved by deleting two little files in your TS4 folders: avatarcache and localthumbcache. 

Also always, always read what the modder has said!!!

MC Command Center

MCCC is such a far-reaching mod that I honestly believe it should be in everyone’s mod folder by default. It added Story Progression before we had Neighborhood Stories. It allows editing of career outfits without an extra mod. It has a teleport sim option so you can pose sims together off lot. It’s more of a what CAN’T it do sort of utility mod. It even makes cheating in game easier!

TwistedMexi’s Better Exceptions

This is another “utility” mod, which is why it’s at the top before we start building a mod folder that is disgustingly huge. Better Exceptions finds those Last Exceptions, pinpoints their cause, and helps you fix the problem. It also runs a report after each patch to check for mod compatibility. Another “must have” to make your modding experience simpler.

The latest public release also helps you track down bad outfit CC so you can finally find that item that keeps attaching itself to each sim walking by or while they’re in the shower. See what I mean? Immensely useful, must have mod.

Wicked Whims OR Wonderful Whims

I’m not here to kink shame you. I’ve used both, depending on what sort of gameplay I’m in the mood for. Both WWs add an attraction system based on appearance, ‘reward’ personality types that are automatically assigned to sims based on their CAS traits and menstrual cycles. One adds NSFW animations, some of which are weirder than others. Use at your age-appropriate discretion.

If you do get Wicked Whims, I advise you also immediately grab the CAS Default Underwear add on so you aren’t surprised by your Sim’s Bits and Bobs while you’re dressing them.

Kuttoe’s Keep Sims in Home Region

I hate walkbys. Like. I hate random walkbys. There is nothing in my game worse than a sim in Oasis Springs just strolling on by in Windenburg. Stay in your freakin lane, Nancy Landgraab.

This is great because 1) it keeps sims designated in certain areas for walkbys, 2) it allows you to assign the world homeless sims should be in and 3) you can allow some worlds to have some crossover. Like, in my mind, Oasis Springs, Del Sol Valley and Strangerville are all pretty close to one another. I allow them to have some overlap. I do not allow Henford on Bagley and Windenburg sims to randomly show up in Strangerville, because in my mind, they are overseas.

There’s also a custom lot trait to allow sims from all over to show up, so tourism can still boom in your worlds.

Language Barriers by Frankk

But now that you’re keeping their sims in their area of the sim globe....

After all, it’s sort of silly that every single sim speaks the same language from the suburbs of Newcrest to the jungles of Selvadorada to the peaks of Mt. Komorebi. Oh no. We have to make this harder on ourselves.

This mod adds 7 languages to the sims universe: Simlish, Windenburgish, Selvadoradian, Toki Sulani, Komorebigo, Tartosiano and Sixami. Your native language is based on the world you live in, family, occult, etc. It limits communication between sims who don’t speak the same language. But! You can learn new languages by studying them... If you have High School Years, you can even pick what language you learn in class? Like? Why wouldn’t you want this??

Lumpinou’s Mod Suite

Lumpinou’s mods are at this point so essential to my game that I don’t know how much farther I could go on this list without naming them.

Mood Pack & Custom Moods for some Moodlets: tons of new moods in game. The Mood Pack is required for some of the other mods on this list [not just Lumpinou’s!]; Custom Moods changes some of the in-game moodlets to match the custom moods.

First Impressions: This nifty mod adds First Impressions to the game--sentiments the second sims meet based on traits. First Impression sentiments can be positive or negative... and maybe for some sims, it’s even Love at First Sight 👀 I’ve recommended it before for Bachelor/ette Challenges, but it’s honestly a mainstay in my regular gameplay. I love when sims are tense around each other because their first meeting went so poorly.

Talents & Weaknesses: Traits can affect how fast sims learn certain skills but isn’t it boring that all creative sims are going to be good at every creative skill? This mod adds innate talents and weaknesses to your sims. It reminds me a lot of Freetime’s One True Hobby, giving a boost to the things they’re naturally talented at doing, but it also does a bonus of giving you skills that they’re just not good out

Road to Romance: This mod overhauls the romance system, adding a romance skill that unlocks more and more interactions the better your sim gets at romancing. It also adds rabbit hole dates for sims to go on together, as well as Couples Counseling!

Open Love Life & No Strings Attached: Open Love Life adds a preference for relationship types (exclusive, non-exclusive or indifference). You can even have a throuple if you like (there’s also basically a ‘hall pass’ option which I think is hilarious but I digress)! No Strings Attached added FWBs before EA added Woohoo Buddies, but it works better... And sims can even eventually catch feelings. Another really really fun storytelling mod.

✨ Relationship & Pregnancy Overhaul: This is one of the crown jewels in Lumpinou’s collection. A whole wide-reaching overhaul of the relationship system. Plays exceptionally well with the above romance-related mods but can be used alone. It adds pretty much everything you could think: preferences on having kids, pregnancy interactions, fertility, woohoo transmitted diseases, fights over unplanned pregnancies, an overhaul of cheating, options for breaking up, custody battles... I’m absolutely missing stuff here. It adds SO MUCH.

✨ LGBTQIA+ Gender & Orientation Overhaul: The other crown jewel imo. This is a complete overhaul of EA’s current system that works alongside the EA one. It allows your sims to fully identify as non-binary sims (as well as agender, genderfluid and transgender). It allows them to question their sexuality and gender. If you want to tell the story of a closeted sim, you can. Sims can come out to one another. There’s queerplatonic relationships. Sims can get unexpected crushes when they thought they were straight and maybe aren’t! It’s INTENSE. Especially as a legacy player, I don’t always go into my saves saying “yes today I think my heir will be nonbinary”... I roll with the punches. This punches me right back.

LittleMsSam’s Mods

Another modder whose wide array of mods are so widely used... It’s hard to imagine my game without them. These are the big ones I use, but I also use a few of her smaller mods (Brush Teeth After Puking and the Wake Up Overhaul are SUPER recommended. Especially the Wake Up Overhaul! It’s so small but adds so much ok moving on)

Pregnancy Overhaul: changes the size of belly, walkstyle when pregnant, and unlocks some interactions -- I usually go for the smaller belly in the 1st trimester only, allowing it to grow larger over time, as well as all the “pregnant sims can do more”... I also add the chance of death. What can I say, I like to live on the edge. Also goes perfectly with Advanced Birth Certificate, if you’re like me and likes that there’s special birth certificates for special occult babies.

SimDa: a dating app for your sims! Find the love of your life, your next one night stand, or just get a blind date.

First Love: for your child sims to have little childhood crushes 🥺

Sul Sul Weather App: don’t you hate when you travel to Sulani for a beach day in game and there’s a full on monsoon happening? This app lets you check the weather before going.

21 Day Seasons: why did EA go from 14 to 28.... why....

Calm Bees: if you’ve ever given in to your sims’ desires and bought them that fucking bee box in spring... you know why this is essential

I also use the following mods for holidays: more holiday icons, holiday traditions, no school tradition, no work tradition, wellness traditions.

MissyHissy’s Hopes & Fears Mod

This is a complete freaking overhaul of wants and fears. In addition to adding whimsets for the later packs that didn’t have them because EA was busy working on the new wants/fears system... It actually upgraded the whims Maxis forgot into wants and made sure there’s sets for children, toddlers and elders. Because y’know. EA “kinda forgot” about those life stages.

Helaene’s Preferences Plus + Preference Bomb

First of all, shout out to Helaene for truly being a real one in terms of sims community longevity. I remember being a kid and downloading their TS2 stuff.

Preferences Plus adds TONS of new likes/dislikes for your sims, some with their own custom interactions--things like which outfit they prefer, favorite flavors and drinks, and more. Preference Bomb then rolls them for all sims in your game--with actual logic applied. Really cool!

Have Some Personality Please! by PolarBearSims

The main draw of this mod is that it completely removed the goofy idle chitchat of nothingness that sims do, along with the increased autonomy to do stuff that makes sense. I love when my sims do things of their own accord! It makes it more fun, more exciting! Otherwise, what is the point of traits anyway.

ChippedSim’s Graveyard, Paws & Claws & Lively Towns

Three mods that add some life to your town.... Well, sort of life....

The Happy Haunts Graveyard mod adds the graveyard lot type, along with appropriate NPCs, moodlets, and some new interactions related to tombstone... But because it’s modular, it also adds some additional paranormal gameplay if you have that stuff pack, some grieving interactions and more. I really like having graveyards in game [especially for my vampire slayers to lurk in].

Paws & Claws is based around animals, naturally--stuff for your pets, preferences for animals besides the cat/dog person traits... But the module I’m really keen on though is the Animal Shelter part! You can build and run your own Animal Shelter in game 🥺

Lively Towns is actually an object based script mod--it allows you to build multi-purpose lots. There are three shops so far (flower store, arts and crafts, and bookstore) but for those lots you see on the gallery that have multiple stores in one... imo it’s invaluable.

Kuttoe’s Random Calls & Texts and Lotharihoe’s Phone Call Overhaul

These two mods add some better... phone usage to your sims. The Phone Call overhaul makes the stupid phone calls you receive way less intrusive and just smarter in general. The additional “delayed invitations” add on is ALSO great for when your sim is invited on a date and you can... you know... get ready for it.

Kuttoe’s Random Texts adds a bunch of new calls and texts messages for your sims (one of my favorites is a call from a parent and they give you some extra money 😭 like how sweet is that?). I’ve had both in my game for a while and they play nicely together from my experience.

ADeepIndigo’s Healthcare Redux & Family Therapy

“Kit if you like traditional The Sims style silly gameplay why do you get these realistic mods” ............. because I like to make the gameplay harder, ok. I like to make my sims suffer. I like the chance of death around every corner for these goobers.

Healthcare Redux does... well... overhaul healthcare in the game. It adds a bunch of more realistic diseases, as well as allergies and injuries, and even medical emergencies. There are also a few new deaths (yay new deaths!).

Family Therapy adds an option that pops up when sims in the same family have negative sentiments towards each other... They can try to work through them and repair relationships with the help of a trained professional. I think that’s super cool tbh??? Like Lumpinou’s mod has couples counseling as a rabbit hole but this also adds a therapist that can make house calls. And it has some functionality for Basemental so..............

ADeepIndigo also has Dental Care and Eye Care mods which I have been... eyeing, but have not played with extensively yet, as well as some mods like Simulation is not Free and SimNation Travel that add to difficulty!

There is also now a Self Image mod, but it comes with the warning that yes, it does delve into EDs. I played with it a bit, and it can make gameplay a lot harder.

Custom Traits

I know not everyone enjoys custom traits--right now, I still use the regular three traits per sim--but sometimes I get a little bored of the same ones, and EA really dropped the ball on traits this game so...

New Emotional Traits by Kuttoe: adds emotional based traits--some are just additional new traits to match the emotions that don’t have them (like Coward) but some are extreme versions of the ones we already have.

New Hobby Traits by Kuttoe: We add movies, we don’t add a Movie Buff Trait. Make it make sense, EA.... There are way more than that though. It also adds a Technophobe trait which I also really missed from TS3.

New Spa Day Traits by Kuttoe: two new traits that play nicely with Spa Day. 

Traits by Scarlet: Photographer’s Eye and Socially Anxious! Again! Traits we probably should have but alas!

More Traits by Maplebell: even MORE traits for your sims--these are also very maxismatchy--there is some overlap with some of Kuttoe’s, so ymmv. I use all of them because I like chaos.

Offspring of NPC Traits by Baniduhaine: this one is a little different than the others, as they aren’t CAS traits at all. If you’ve ever played TS3 you might know that offspring of NPC sims would have hidden traits... And if you’ve ever had a kid with Father Winter, you know his kids have a special trait in TS4. This adds inheritable gameplay traits for lots of different NPCs! It adds a little something extra to gameplay, it’s pretty cool 🤓

The Personality Mod and The Hobby Mod by MissyHissy: these are two trait packs that add reward traits inspired by TS2. The Personality Mod adds ones inspired by the 6 TS2 Aspirations, the Hobby Mod by TS2 Freetime. Another one that just... adds a little something more for whim-driven gameplay. I know they aren’t called whims anymore but I’m pretty sure the game strings still call them whims so.

Vegetarian and Lactose Intolerant Overhaul Mods by Robin: another reward trait change--these don’t take away the traits and hide them in CAS, but they make it so that you can simply... choose to be vegetarian. And while your sim probably wouldn’t choose to be lactose intolerant, you can, of course exercise your Watcher-given powers to MAKE them be lactose intolerant. I mean... Why waste a trait slot on either when you could simple be?

Custom Aspirations

I used to use Ky-E’s Aspiration Overhaul, which was fun--it’s now being updated by NC4T and you can find it here--which did what it suggests. It completely overhauls the Aspiration system, making them more lifetime worthy, instead of “extended tutorials” as Ky-E eloquently put it. There were also 38 new aspirations added by the mod.

That said, because I do like to make and share sims with my friends, it’s just been easier on me to switch away from the overhaul to custom aspirations. These are what my game currently has. Ilkavelle made the bulk of these, so I specifically marked other creators.

Mods I am not currently using but still recommend:

Slice of Life: Kawaiistacie’s Big Ass Mod that overhauls... so much. Like. So much. I do really recommend trying it out to see if it works for you, but it’s a bit too much for my games on top of everything else I have--I don’t need two menstrual systems, you know? One is enough.

Lifetime Aspirations: As I said before, it’s easier to pick and choose custom aspirations at the moment than overhaul everything completely. But I do eye it up occasionally and I enjoyed my time playing with it.

ADeepIndigo’s Education Overhaul: the main reason I don’t play with this one is because it’s a bit too much of an overhaul for me--every big overhaul mod runs the risk of incompatibility of other mods, and Zer0′s Required Degrees for Promotions is my preferred mod of choice here.

Kuttoe’s Career Overhaul: ...see above. It’s incompatible with Zer0′s so I don’t have it in my game, but I’ve tried it before and liked it a lot. If you aren’t using Zer0′s Custom Degrees/Required Degrees for Promotions I absolutely recommend it.

Reshade and Gshade: actually I AM using ReShade but I don’t want to call it an essential... Making your game “prettier” isn’t an essential but I do like to have a “brighter” game and I hate editing so I play with ReShade. But I’m not calling it essential so it’s sneaking into the bottom of the list down here.

Basemental Drugs: use at your age-appropriate discretion. I’m still in the “testing it out” phase which is why it hasn’t been bumped to Essential Mod, but I am enjoying it. I am also Very Much An Adult.

FULL LOOKBOOK, BACKSTORY AND DOWNLOAD BENEATH CUT

I am constantly looking for new sims to include in my save file, so I figured I’d share one of my current gems for others to enjoy aswell. She comes with a unique set of traits and skills, and has a detailed background, but feel free to play with her as you’d want! If you want to play with her custom backstory, I recommend downloading the language barriers mod for consistency. 

ABOUT PRIYA KAUR (& BACKSTORY):

Cheerful | Genius | Socially Awkward | Family Oriented | Overachiever

As a child, Priya and her parents moved from Sulani to San Myshuno. The move itself was exciting for Priya, and she was fascinated by all the new types of flickering lights across the buildings, and machines as big as boats on the roads. However, the move also came along with some language barriers, and a lot of uncertainity. As a result of this, Priya tends to shy away from other people and rarely open up to anyone she does not already know. 

When Priya isolated herself from other people, she mostly spent her days inside, tinkering with toys, computers and machinery.

She recently went to university, and graduated with a distinguished degree in Computer Science at Foxbury. She is now contemplating what to do next.

She is eager to learn more skills and take more degrees. And she also envisons herself as a freelance programmer, a mechanic or a scientist.

Priya also has a hard time embracing her culture, and often put on a persona around peope to hide that part of herself. Over the duration of her life, she has only ever introduced her parents to one friend. Her distancing herself from her culture, has also led Priya to have a distant relationship with her mother. She is however close with her father, as he is the only one she feels understands her struggles.

She has only ever had two boyfriends in her life, one of which, she believes to be the love of her life, but in reality, they are not really that compatiable.

She loves cooking and knitting, as she spent most of her childhood learning these skills through her grandma and aunties. She hopes to do the same for her child some day.

Uses her grandma’s engagement ring. Not only is it a memory of her grandma, but it also keeps people at distance when she’s out with friends. #multipurpose.

This sim uses a fair amount of CC, some of which might need to be updated later if you want it to be compatiable with infants. All credit to the CC creators.

    IMPORTANT:  Default eyes are NOT included in these files. You can use other default eyes. If you want the same default eyes, you need to take following actions (temporarily fix)

Other defaults included are eyelash removers. You can remove these, but remove the CC eyelashes off of the character aswell then.

I use luumia’s default vanilla skin.

I also have all packs downloaded, so be aware that some items may be missing if you do not.

How to download: 1. Unzip both files.

2. Mods go into mod folder (I have included these, as there are a lot of individual pieces from big collections that I am using. I still recommend you to check out everything by these creators, as you might want the updated files. I only use CC’s from these creators, so I recommend checking them out regardless.)

3. Take all tray files OUT OF the tray folder and directly into the tray folder provided in the game DOWNLOAD FILES (GOOGLE DRIVE)

Don’t reupload her as she is, but if you make any changes, feel free to do whatever you want with her.

Hey there! I’m sorry if this has been asked before, but I wasn’t exactly sure how to search for it. I was wondering if you had any recommendations where Aziraphale and Crowley spend time with significant historical figures, and/or fics that are centered around big historical events?

Background:

Hello everyone! I hope you're doing great. After receiving a lot of love for my original challenge, I thought I'd make it available for everyone, even if they don't have the necessary packs for it. This was something I've been meaning to do for a long time, and I finally have the time to sit down and perfect it for the base game. Firstly, I'd like to express my gratitude to all of you for the love and support you've shown on the original challenge. For those who are not familiar with it, you can find it here. I'd also like to give a shout-out to everyone who provided feedback and pointed out any issues so that I could make it even better.

Information:

I want to clarify that this is the base version and not the unmodded version. So, if you do not play with mods, I request you to be patient as I am working on a version that will cater to your needs. Please consider these rules as guidelines rather than strict requirements. Also, you will find that this challenge is less strict about money, and more about what your sims can do. My thoughts when creating this challenge were since I can't use all the packs I was aiming to make more gameplay and storytelling opportunities than to have strict rules!

I am apologizing if my English is bad because I am using a machine translator to help me. I am from lily’s blog without a question box and I want you to help me understand this issue. By addressing the anonymous hate you are only giving it a platform and spreading awareness to your followers?

We should not be getting involved or anything like that because we have followers who can say mean things and express different opinions than us. You cannot expect your followers to listen to what you say and agree with everything you do. If you tell us not to send threatenings and private information there will always be crazy followers who will do the opposite. They will not listen because they are messed up and think this is funny to get a reaction out of you ,but if you keep talking about anonymous slander and getting involved then you are giving these people a platform and a reason to be heartless on the internet. Only windy and saint should be involved and maybe it is a good idea if they keep it private next time. Like personal messaging. You can see what can happens if you make personal drama public on this website called tumblr. It will blow up and become out of our control because millions of people can access it.

For my thoughts I think Lily should be held accountable for sharing windy’s message and giving the anonymous people an opportunity to be mean. They have a big community and it is insensitive to believe that there is not malicious people following them. I think everyone who is not the wind or saint need to step away and do not be involved. This is not our argument and repeatedly talking of it will only continue the cycle of anonymous hate and grievance. We need to back away and not talk about. Saint said it very clearly and respectfully that we should not engage the hate by sharing and exposing it to our followers. windy said that they need space from all of this and we should all respect it. We need to be more self aware of our actions and the harm it can cause even intentionally or not.

I notice there is a real problem in this community and it is encouraging anonymous haters. Why we never had this problem before bigger names like restart heart comes along? It was calm in this community but your friends are ruining the peace by participating in anon culture and doom scrolling. I am asking you with genuine sincere emotions to stop this. Stop giving anonymous a platform to be mean by turning off the anonymous question box and blocking. Do not answer rude asks and they will get tired and move away. This is my advice which you do not need to listen to but I recommend it. Please have a good morning.

I’m not going to fault you for English not being your first language- I work with many people with a language barrier in not only the limited Spanish I know, but also sign language for two deaf/hard of hearing employees.

I want to first ask why you’re coming to me about your grievances with Lily. Not just you, but other anons. Just because my ask box is open doesn’t mean that I’ll just allow you to shit on them for what they decide to do with their blog. And I’m also Lilith’s number one call out friend when I don’t agree with their actions before they make them public. Would you translate to people who bought the game but cannot read it?

It depends on what you like to have translated. I won't translate big chunks of the story, short summaries at best, to have the gist of what was said. In case of the card stories that were reused for the Ryusei game, you can always take a look at this Google Sheet to see if it was translated and if you can, read along.

I appreciate that the game is bought despite the language barrier, so I'd like to help out even if it's only a little bit! To get through the game I recommend using Google Translate to scan the sentences and have them translated.

My Comments: I have a thing for Druid!Merlin apparently, and this fic falls into that.  Most recent chapter left off on a cliffhanger so I’m :OOO atm but it’s VERY GOOD and I recommend you all read this one as well :D

My Comments: Probably the fluffiest thing on this list.  A crossover with Three Musketeers in which the author literally swaps Santiago Cabrera’s characters.  That’s it, that’s the story.  But it’s not just crack- there’s angst, there’s emotions, and overall what I feel is a realistic reaction to what would happen if this, well, happened lol.  I especially adore the scenes in which Lancelot is learning French- THE AUTHOR ACTUALLY ACKNOWLEDGES THAT THERE’S A LANGUAGE BARRIER- IT’S GREAT.

Summary: In a time when Merlin's magic is outed and accepted -something he never thought possible months ago- Arthur is shown that despite knowing how strong Merlin is, he doesn't fully understand -comprehend- just how powerful he truly is. A dangerous conflict in which Merlin all but sacrifices himself to save everyone else, shows Arthur that there is far more to Merlin than he thought possible. Gaius wasn't kidding when he told Arthur that Merlin was the strongest sorcerer ever to have lived.

My Comments: I greatly enjoy the non-linear story telling of this one- with the present interspersed with flashbacks to the magic reveal, it allows the reader to see what happened without just an info dump lol (also I’m considering trying that style myself now).   Just I recommend this one too lol

Afternoon. I'm trying to get a feel for the homebrew scene on the Saturn. I was able to grab a copy of the Vandal Hearts English translation. It looks good. My question is, would people mind suggesting the best (in their opinion) homebrew games, hacks, and/or translations? Summary

Game BASIC for Sega Saturn is a homebrew development kit that allows you to program games for the Sega Saturn using the BASIC programming language. If you’re familiar with the PlayStation’s Net Yaroze platform, think of this as the Saturn’s answer to it – just cheaper and easier to get started with.

Game BASIC’s use of the BASIC language makes for a very low barrier to entry in terms of programming skill. Though the Saturn is notoriously difficult to program for, Game BASIC makes it easy to get started and is surprisingly powerful, allowing very easy sprite manipulation and straightforward 3D polygon implementation. It even includes an adapter cable that allows you to communicate with the Saturn from your PC to transfer or save programs and streamline development. For example, here’s a Pilotwings-esque demo, but in Game BASIC:

Atom python repl. The caveat? Game BASIC was released only in Japan, so this means a complete setup can be difficult to obtain and all documentation is in Japanese! Moreover, the supporting software that allows you to use your PC for streamlined development was intended for the Windows 95 era and flat out does not install on modern systems. Oh, and the adapter cable that allows you to connect your Saturn to your PC is a 25-pin serial connection!

Who in the world still has both Game BASIC and a Windows 95 PC with a physical serial port? Nobody! (Well, unless you’re Modern Vintage Gamer) But if you’re a brave experimenter who’s not afraid to tinker a bit, there are still multiple options to get everything working, even today! What You’ll Need

There are several options for working with Game BASIC, ranging from quite simple but clunky to work with, to quite powerful and streamlined. Here are the three options:

The Simple Saturn-only setup

Required Tools

A copy of the Game BASIC for Sega Saturn disc

The ability to play Japanese Saturn games (A Japanese or modded console, a Pro Action Replay/Pseudo Saturn Kai cartridge, or a Saturn emulator)

Any Saturn controller

Plenty of room in the Saturn’s internal memory (if you want to save your programs)

For this option, you’ll run Game BASIC on the Saturn with no PC connection, using only standard Saturn accessories. This is a reasonable choice if you just want to write “Hello, World!”-style programs or play around with the neat games and demos that come with the kit. Theoretically, you can write even the most complex programs this way, but you’ll run into limitations on the size of games you can save to the Saturn’s internal memory. Plus, programming with a virtual keyboard is an absolute pain. Start here if you don’t have the necessary hardware for the other options, or if you just want to poke around a bit and see what this is all about.

The Enhanced Saturn-only setup

Required Tools

All of the tools from Option 1, PLUS

Some kind of external expanded memory, such as:

A direct-save memory cartridge (e.g., the official Saturn Backup Memory)

A Sega Saturn Floppy Disk Drive and some 3.5″ floppy disks

A Sega Saturn keyboard OR the NetLink keyboard adapter with a PS/2 keyboard

Fun peripherals, like the Stunner light gun, 3D Control Pad, multi-tap, and Shuttle Mouse

One of the great things about Game BASIC is how easy it makes it to access the Saturn’s peripherals, including the internal backup RAM, external memory cartridges, and even the Saturn Floppy Disk Drive. With a setup like this, you’ll have plenty of space to save your programs and you can use a real keyboard for text entry. You can even start experimenting with different forms of input, like analog controls and light guns! But without access to the tools a PC provides, it will be difficult to make nice-looking sprites, textures, and 3D models. So, this will still limit what you’re capable of. Regardless, this is a great option for the sheer fun factor of “Hey look! I’m programming with my Saturn!” or if you have no ability to connect your Saturn to a PC.

You can even go this route with a Saturn emulator, giving you easy access to improved keyboard, mouse, and storage options. I’ve confirmed that Mednafen successfully emulates Game BASIC and allows for keyboard and mouse pass-through input, meaning you can do a whole lot of Saturn development with very little barrier to entry.

Getting Started Role Playing

I’ve had a number of asks on this topic over the years, and rather than retyping the same thing repeatedly, I’m gonna try and collect my thoughts on how to go about this. All of this is assuming you’re on desktop; mobile makes some things a little more difficult. Feel free to add to this; I’m sure there’s things I’m forgetting.

First things first: Preparation

Get your blog in order

Create a character bio - This should include character name, a description, and a background. If your character is a canon character, then it’s not so bad to forego this, but I think it’s a good idea even for canon characters, as not everyone is going to be familiar with every single character in a universe.

Put a short explanation of the blog in the blog header - This is like a pitch or an introduction to what your blog is about. This should indicate you’re an RP blog, who you RP(if you have multiple muses on the blog, I think it’s okay to just say ‘multiple OCs’ or ‘multiple muses’), and maybe the universe your muse is from. Some blogs also include if they’re selective or not, multi-ship or not, open to cross-over/multiverse or not, etc, but not nearly as necessary.

Rules page - not necessary, but sometimes helpful if you have any particular things, such as being unwilling to RP smut, or you have some triggers/sensitive topics that you aren’t will to do, etc.

Make sure your inbox is open - Seems silly, but I forget this one frequently when I’m making a new blog. Check other blog settings as well- (submissions, anon, etc)

Follow other blogs - This seems obvious, but it is key. Follow other blogs you want to RP with! Find others from the universe your muses are set in. Do take the time to read their bios and rules pages, if they have any.

Write an Introduction post - Not everyone does this, but I think it’s very helpful. It should be a SHORT post, in or out of character. Many blogs are disinclined to reblog long intro posts because people instinctively skip over walls of text.

Reblog RP memes - The Intro post will help generate interest, the RP memes make it easy to break the ice.

Next Step: Getting Out There

Provided you have taken the time to read other people’s rules and bios, reach out!

If they’ve reblogged memes you are interested in, send an ask with that meme - These are GREAT icebreakers so you can get started with relatively low effort. Friendly reminder: Read the meme carefully. Typically the meme has some form of explanation or instruction in it, and it is very frustrating when someone sends in a meme when they clearly did not bother to actually read what it’s about.

Use the messenger to ask to plot - Sometimes blogs don’t post memes often, or they reblog memes that don’t quite work for your character. Politely ask to plot. Try to come with ideas. It can be frustrating when someone comes to you wanting to plot but has NO idea about what to do. I personally will frequently take premises from memes I like and adjust them as necessary.

Open starters - Alternative to memes, sometimes blogs will post ‘open starters’. These are usually open ended in-character posts that other role players can reply to. It isn’t a bad idea to post your own open starters either, if you’re feeling up for it. Note: Generally speaking, open starters once taken by someone are not available for additional role players unless otherwise noted in the tags. If you like an open starter that has already been taken, you can also use the messenger to ask if you can also get in on that. Many RP bloggers use thread trackers, so the starter would need to be copied to a new post before beginning RP.

Important Notes: Etiquette

There are a number of rules and behaviors that are important to keep in mind, some obvious, some not so much. In no particular order.

Patience - This is my number one thing. RPers come from all walks of life- full-time students and career people, big and small families, personal struggles, different time zones, language barriers abound. And Tumblr is not a well programmed website, so notifications don’t pop up, or get buried under other things. So don’t panic if people don’t immediately reply. Don’t be rude when following up after a reasonable amount of time has passed. Give people the opportunity to measure their replies to you.

Try to keep your In Character and Out of Character clear/separate - Some RP blogs are actually a mishmash of personal and roleplay. Many blogs indicate in the tags or with markings of some form(the most common being ‘//’ slashes or () parentheses). It can be confusing for people without these markers.

Do not reblog RPs you are not involved in - This is a personal pet peeve. RP posts are often only snippets of the overall story, and when reblogged it is taken out of context. The other problem is it adds notifications to a thread that aren’t from the partner, and can be confusing. RPThreadTracker doesn’t have a problem with it, but other forms of tracking can struggle.

Respect and ‘Don’t like Don’t follow’ - universes big and small, OCs and Canon Characters over the top and from humble beginnings, we’re all here to have a good time. You’re not going to like every mun or muse you come across. Not every other blog is going to like you or your muse. People talk shit about self-inserts, teenage OCs, people who like to RP almost exclusively smut, and myriad of other things. But those muns are doing things that make them happy. And you don’t get to control what other people do. If you don’t like it, don’t follow. Don’t RP with them. Let it go.

Self Care - This is part of a larger topic and related to the above bullet point, but important to at least touch on. Not everyone who RPs is well or good. This is meant to be fun. So if you are stressed out or overwhelmed by an RP partner or thread for whatever reason, talk to your partner about it. If they do not respect your requests or needs, then it would be better to not RP with them. There are people who struggle with a myriad of health and situational issues. You will at one time or another meet people who will insist you cater to their every whim, try to control you and your muse. Block these people.

Read tags - This may not seem like an etiquette thing, but this is important. Some people communicate extensively this way. It will help to prevent communication errors.

Read More - use the read more function for NSFW threads. It’s the [...] at the end of the options bar

Tagging - Tag NSFW, triggering content, and anything else you think appropriate. I also try to tag my different verses, my in character and out of character posts, etc.

Trim Your Posts - This is hard to do on mobile, but necessary. When a post has many reblogs, it can be tedious to scroll past. Trimming them/cropping them makes a big difference. [Link here for a tutorial on how to trim - Browser]

Mun and Muse Knowledge [Meta Gaming] - There maybe things your character does not know, and cannot know, that you know. Remember to keep the distinction. Nothing kills my desire to RP with someone than their character somehow reading my character’s thoughts.

Controlling other Characters [God Modding] - You control your character. Your partner controls theirs. You don’t control if they get hit by a punch, if they dodge, if they punch back. It’s part of the give and take.

Drive the Story - Role Playing is joint story telling. Don’t put all the burden if directing where the story goes on your partner. Give your partner something to react to, to build on. If you only ever give one sentence replies, it’s going to get tedious fast.

Other Tips and Tricks

I am a big fan of XKit, a browser addon that makes Tumbling much easier for RPers. [Link here!] The specific functions that are most helpful are Editable Reblogs and One Click Reply. Editable reblogs makes it far easier to trim in post. One Click Reply makes it possible to reply to comments and other notification forms.

In addition to those two, I also like to use the Blacklist, and Post Block functions. Some RPers or topics I particularly cannot stand, so I use Blacklist to keep them from my dash. Post Block is great for those discourse posts and individual RP threads that just squick you out for whatever reason.

I also am easily lost and confused by the innumerable notifications I get on the daily, so it became very important for me to use a website called RPThreadTracker. I highly recommend it, as I occasionally have threads that don’t get replied to for weeks. They also have an add-on button so you can click to add a thread to your list quickly and easily.

IC/OOC - In Character / Out of Character

OC - Original Character

Thread - the roleplay, the chain of posts making up the story

Selective/Semi-Selective/Private/Mutuals Only - This is often in a blog header - indicates how picky the mun is about selecting RP partners and threads. Read their rules. Respect their decisions to RP or not to RP.

Multi-verse - Indicates the blog is open to threads outside of their designated universe. (IE, my Warhammer character being willing to RP with an Overwatch character). It is advisable to message the mun to hash out the details.

DM or PM - Direct message or private message. Both indicate the tumblr message system.

AU - Alternate Universe. Indicates a deviation from the traditional universe.

Well, we’re done with reviewing the authors for batch 1… so here are the ten lovely authors we have chosen:

Haircutnamedarthur ( @haircut-named-arthur ) –They are the author of Original Finish Plastic, a story where Yuuri is a nerdy model horse collector and Viktor is a model who really wants to impress him. It is fun and fluffy–a good light read for one of those stressful days.

The author knows how to be funny without trying too hard and the amount of research they did really shows through in the story. You can enjoy learning a lot about model horses in no time.

Sarabel also commends how the plot is paced–it doesn’t rush to the point that it feels unnatural nor does it build too slow to the point that it bores its readers out.

Mythmaker  ( @catamight ) - Author of Take these Lies and Make them True and Sympathy for the Devil.

Mythmaker portrays emotions as if she is painting a picture. Readers are drawn to every brush stroke she makes because each of them all contribute to the overall quality of the picture. Every line in her stories are carefully thought out and are there for a purpose.

Take these Lies and Make them True is about Yuuri never going into professional figure skating because he is too anxious to try. One day, however, his friends and family bought him a ticket to a skating summer camp in New York City and there he gets to meet his idol Viktor.

In Sympathy for the Devil, the story is about Yuuri turning into a vampire after the Grand Prix Final banquet because of some unknown reason. He then tries to live his life as normally as he can while Phichit helps him find a way to quench his thirst for blood without becoming a monster.

Orchids_and_Fictional_Cities ( @orchids-and-fictional-cities ) - Author of Lullaby of Birdland and And Miles to Go before I Sleep. This author can write fics so beautifully that it makes you cry.

Lullaby of Birdland is more than just a romance story. It’s a story about depression and anxiety, a story about hope and getting back up after a hard fall, a story about how love can mend broken hearts and make it easier to live life again.

Viktor’s struggle with depression and Yuuri’s fight against anxiety–the author portrays them so well in LOB. The angst doesn’t suddenly crash on you all at once. It slowly builds up in each chapter before the author throws in the final blow that can really make everything fall apart. (But don’t worry, the author promises a happy ending for LOB).

Copperwings ( @worldofcopperwings ) - Author of Something for the First Time and Void. Copperwings has beautiful themes in their stories. No matter how simple the plot, they know how to make it meaningful. I personally recommend to check out Void. It’s only a one-shot, but it’s so beautiful that it makes me want for more.

Void is set in a world where tattoo-like images appear on people’s skin. These “tattoos” help a person determine their path in life. However, Yuuri Katsuki does not have any tattoos and this makes people regard him with suspicion and fear. People without tattoos–Void, as they call them–are said to have no soul and future. Yuuri then runs away from his hometown to carve his own path in life.

imaginary_dragonling ( @imaginarydragonling ) - Author of What Makes us Human.

It is evident through the writer’s work that they enjoy doing research a lot. What Makes us Human is a science fiction AU where Yuuri is an engineer who is assigned to teach AI!Viktor what it means to be human.

Despite the amount of information dump at the beginning of the story, it’s still a good read. Once you get to main part, all that information you have learned will be really worth it. This AU is set in space and it’s very believable that it is.

Imaginary_dragonling has a good grasp on each of the characters’ personalities. Sarabel likes how they portray Viktor despite the limitations that comes with Viktor’s character in the story. Even though he’s an android, he doesn’t seem to be out of character.

Llythl - Author of That April (You were Knowable).

Llythl is an amazing writer, now I wonder where they are. The only work they have published for YOI is that one fic, which was last updated around March. (I don’t know if they have a tumblr, but if someone does then please tag them in the replies.)

That April (You were Knowable) is a wonderful presentation of how Yuuri and Viktor may have started out in getting to know each other. It’s not an overly dramatic or a whooping emotions-ride, but it’s soft and the pacing of the story is just right. 

totaldislocation @potclean – Author of 20 Days (of you and me) and I Didn’t Know I Was Lonely Until I Saw Your Face

Totaldislocation has a  straightforward-style, jazzed with nuances from the original show that spark a familiar nostalgia. 

20 Days (of you and me)  offers an interesting insight into the life of Viktor and Yuuri, through twenty days in St. Petersburg. Vikto and Yuuri are getting through the challenges of language barriers and establishing where they are in their relationship. The author does a fine job with showing the contrast between cultures, and it feels like you’re taking a step into their world. 

thepurpleeyedone  (@japansace) – Author of Intermission and Gentleman Caller.

Thepurpleeyedone has a beautiful way with words. Their writing is simple and delicate, with a characteristic flow in both of the works they have written. Their characterization feels very real, intensifying the whole reading experience.

Intermission is a set of in-between moments that fills in the gap the anime left behind. On the other hand,

Gentleman Caller contrasts the fluff we see in Intermission with the mutual pining and angst of a 17th century courting universe!

siberianchan – Author of Favorite spots and Sing for me.

Siberianchan has a straightforward approach. With bits of witty humor sewn in to add a zest to the characters’ personalities, their works make for an enjoyable read. The writer has a detached way of writing, which adds to the interesting commentary between characters and the scenes that follow-up. Sing for me was an interesting choice with the musical flair and the theatrical strings that were in play throughout the piece, and siberianchan handled the AU spectacularly!

QueBae (@que-bae) – Author of Love is Coming Home and The Ties That Bind.
