Good Morning/Day/Evening Merlin Fandom, may we have your attention please?
Even though the Merlin fandom is by no means new, there is still new content being published by the dozens every week. However, many writers have reported a decline in feedback/kudos lately. We want to help out all of those writers; be they new or old, struggling on a WIP- or have an uncommon relationship preference. So for anyone who wants to give a huge thumbs up to the writers of the Merlin fandom, we have just the challenge for you.
Coming this November, we will launch Merlin Writer Appreciation Month. The aim of this month is for Merlin fans to show some lovin’ to fic authors of all ships and ratings - and in turn, to boost the morale and motivation levels of the writers.
Every week will have a different theme, all in the name of celebrating Merlin fanfiction. You can participate in a month-long comment bingo, as well as rec your favorite writers old and new.

Rec some lovely fics written by new writers! They deserve some recognition, and to be welcomed into the world of writing Merlin fanfiction.

Week Three: WIP Week (November 18th - November 24th)
There is nothing quite like the struggle of creating a successful WIP - and these writers put so much time and thought into their work. This is a week where we can appreciate and motivate these writers to keep doing what they’re doing!
Week Four: All Time Faves Week (November 25th - December 1st)
Lets rec our all time favourite fics. We gotta show some love to those who inspire us!

Comment: Wow wow wow, THIS. FIC. The angst wrecked me, and the back and forth of the timeline was so well done. It makes me wish that series five would have went like this!

Comment: This fic is simply wonderful. I loved how achingly beautiful everything was described through Arthur’s POV, and how everything changed when he met Merlin. I don’t have words. It’s lovely!

Comment: I read this fic recently, and I enjoyed it immensely, though it took a while to read through all of it. It was an entertaining read and definitely deserves more attention.

Forced from Camelot, Merlin and Gwaine find themselves living amongst Druids, and Merlin discovers he has the chance to learn more about his magic, his heritage, and the prophecy that binds him and Arthur together. But with tensions stirring both near and abroad, past lies come to light, and everyone finds that not everything is truly as it seems.
Comment: Gwaine and Merlin are the cutest in this and I love how much they love each other. This was an amazing fic with as much fluffy domesticity as angst and action.
...so maybe reccing a 90K word fic for newbie week is too much, buuuuuut Neb has only been writing for a year, so it definitely can come in newbie week. I’d definitely say to read the rest of her fics if you want something shorter but also great!

Alright, y’all, the moment you’ve been waiting for: My favorite fics for week four of @madaboutmerlin’s Merlin Writer Month.
Now I know over this last month, I have been notorious for posting ridiculously long rec lists apparently even crashing some browsers- SORRY- BUT this time, I shall limit myself to my top eight (because I tried to do top five but HNNNG THERE ARE TOO MANY GOOD ONES) that I have not previously mentioned on any list (because many of my fave fics I also recced for Rare Gems week)- so I HIGHLY recommend you go scour those lists as well- if you want anyway lol
So, without further ado-
MY TOP EIGHT MERLIN FICS
NUMBER EIGHT
A Fistful of Infinity and Starlight by junkshopdisco
Pairing: Gwaine/Merlin, (Semi-Unrequited) Gwen/Arthur Pendragon, Gwen/Lancelot

Summary: Uther’s insane, Morgana’s plotting a new assault on Camelot, and Arthur and his knights are clueless but supposedly in charge. In the midst of it, Gwaine finds himself harbouring feelings for a man who apparently has a destiny, and learns something new about magic: it doesn’t play fair, and serving it shakes everything you hold dear – whether you’re a sorcerer or not.
My Comments: It’s a musical. I’m not kidding. Sadly there is no actual music written for it, but I feel that the characters have a very realistic reaction to walking through the hallways and suddenly finding your friends singing at you lmao

My Comments: Literally just five short little pieces about Merlin and a reincarnated!Gwaine. Short and sweet, and makes me smile every time I read it

Summary: If Gawain and the Green Knight took place in the Merlin universe, it might have been a tiny bit different—because there's no way Merlin would let Gwaine traipse off on his own to get his head chopped off. Includes attempted alliterative verse, bawdy songs, evil deer, made-up spells, clichés, and a truly insane amount of fluffiness.
My Comments: OKAY, THIS FIC- I LOVE IT. THE WRITING STYLE IS GREAT AND SARCASTIC AND THE SEQUEL LEAVES YOU HOPEFUL FOR WHAT IS TO COME FOR THE FUTURE OF THE CHARACTERS. I have laughed aloud every time I’ve read this because it is also QUITE FUNNY if you ask me. A wonderful take on Gawain and the Green Knight that I feel fits very well into the universe of Merlin.

My Comments: Alright, something different for number four. Now this author is great. I have loved every single one of their fics- so much so that when I was compiling this list I was unable to choose just one to rec lol. A gen author who explores Merlin’s friendships with each of the characters in turn. I HIGHLY recommend their stuff!
NUMBER THREE
The Water Witch and the Black Dogs by Tipper
Pairing: Gen
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences

Summary: A little tale of evil hags, black dogs, missing princes and estranged siblings, not necessarily in that order. When Gwaine accompanies Arthur, Merlin and the knights on a diplomatic mission to Mercia, he becomes an unwitting participant in a power struggle for Bayard's throne.
My Comments: Now, I actually found this fic just last week and I sincerely wish I had found it sooner; I always adore Gwaine centric fics, and this one takes the cake. With wonderful exploration of family (of both the blood kind and the found kind), BAMF!Merlin, BAMF!Gwaine, and giant puppies (...okay, they only appear once BUT THEY’RE STILL THERE), this fic was one that I couldn’t stop reading and has a very satisfying conclusion after everything that happened, both in the characters’ pasts and for the events of the fic itself.
NUMBER TWO
Along a Wandering Wind by Hope
Pairing: Merlin/Gwaine, Lancelot/Gwen/Arthur

Summary: Just when Gwaine finds a reason to end his roaming, he must leave Camelot again, this time on royal orders. Whether and how he returns may depend on the secrets Merlin—and others—are keeping from him.
(A romance of letters, intrigue and knightly apprenticeship, set post-S3.)
My Comments: Epistolary form is a weakness of mine, and this fic does it beautifully. Another Gwaine centric fic in which he and Lancelot are sent to Essetir to claim the land for Camelot following Cenred’s death. Wonderful exploration of Merlin and Gwaine’s relationship and how a long-distance relationship might have worked in their universe. It also beautifully handles many LGBT themes (including a canonical trans character) and I found myself emotionally connecting with the characters in a way that no other fic really had before. This one is great and I adore it as well <3

NUMBER ONE: MY FAVORITE MERLIN FIC
Hello, Sweetheart by ViridianJane
Pairing: Merlin/Gwaine
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences

Summary: Gwaine and Merlin have been dancing around their feelings for years; Merlin too focused on trying to thwart destiny, and Gwaine holding back in fear of losing what they already have. But the battle at Camlann comes too close to taking everything from them. It’s a second chance for all of them, and Gwaine confronts Merlin about magic, love, loyalty, and (surprisingly) dragons. But the fight for peace is not over yet: Arthur has yet to change the laws on magic, and his ignorance and hypocrisy provokes a group of rogue druids into taking action. They’ve placed a curse on the land, and Merlin is the one suffering the consequences. Thus ensues a quest: Arthur, Gwaine, Merlin and Aithusa travel to four locations with close ties to magic in order to break the curse, and on the way, Arthur begins to right his wrongs and finally takes the time to listen to what Merlin has to say.
My Comments: This. This right here is a beautiful fanfiction. I have reread it at least ten times (twice in one day, actually!) and have cried nearly every time (I was in class the one time I didn’t. So.) I have it downloaded on both my laptop and my tablet, and I even tried to get it on my phone because I LOVE IT THAT MUCH- AAAAAND I’VE PRINTED IT OUT (after spending hours fixing up the file in Word because the PDF download is a liiiiiiittle skewonkous). Merlin and Gwaine’s relationship is beautiful, and I positively adore them and Aithusa together (Gabby, you’ve ruined me for Gwaine & Aithusa stuff- I need more and there’s barely any lmao). Gwen is beautifully characterized as well, and I feel that this fic is a wonderful conclusion to the show. It may also be what I have accepted as canon instead of the finale but that’s just me. If there is one fic on this list that I say you should read, it’s this one, because Merlin and Gwaine finally get the happy ending they deserve.

Arthur is travelling north when he meets Merlin, looking small and battered by the side of the road.
Extremely extremely good Merlin/Arthur/Gwaine porn with feels. Seriously accomplished world building for such a wee fic too.
The Line Dividing by Woldy
Morgana dreams of a woman in the darkness.
A canon au where Morgana dreams of Nimueh and a new kingdom and then makes it happen, powerfully and beautifully.
We were only playing by Roobs_teacup
Basically Arthur's afraid of water and it comes out in a dramatic way when he goes on holiday with his boyfriend for the first time and meets a whole lot of people.
Just a lovely characterisation of Arthur here, in all his insecurities, and Mordred is also wonderfully drawn.
My general author rec is @sophinisba who has written so many beautiful rare gems with as many pairings and aus as you can dream of - and always does so with lyrical, graceful skill, never shying away from difficult subject matter or being afraid to stray off the beaten fandom path.

My Major is Pre-Sorcery by princepratness

Summary: Merlin's in the pre-sorcery department and Arthur's in the Prince program. The last thing Arthur expected is for them to ever get along. However, they do. In fact, they get along so damn well that Arthur's stuck wondering how he never noticed when the insults became kisses instead.
Comments: This is absolutely adorable and is a lovely quick heartwarming read for anyone who loves a bit of Merthur. The perfect enemies to lovers/ friends to lovers fic!

Merlin Writer Month: Faves Week
So, I’ve been really looking forward to this week and I have a ton of recommendations. Hope I provide you with something new and that you enjoy it! This are in no particular order, they are just works that I love in equal measure for different reasons and that I feel everyone should read because they are amazing. Also, this is going to be long, so sorry (but not really) about that, so you’ll find everything after the cut.
Also, if the fic has a “*” beside it, it means it is a restricted work on AO3, so you’ll need to be logged in to read it.
The thing is, I need to start this list by putting my absolute favorite at the very beggining. After it, as I wrote above, they’re all equally beloved to me, but this first one is just it for me for various reasons.
The Sidewalks of New York by emmbrancsxx0

Summary: New York City, 1925. Jazz, flappers, parties, and violence. In the midst of Prohibition, crime boss Arthur Pendragon and his gang, the Knights of the Round Table, arrive from London to open a speakeasy in Chelsea. Fearing they’ll lose their hold on Manhattan’s West Side, the Black Kings send Merlin Emrys to spy on the Knights. The two gangs quickly become rivals, and there is no place for love in war.
Comment: This fic is just absolutely brilliant in every sense. It picked my interest because of the time it is set in (which is my favorite time in history). I’ve always had a fascination with New York 1910-1930 and the whole Prohibition and gangs aspect of it. This is just so well balanced in every aspect that it offers: the romance, the betrayals, the rivalries between gangs, the characters and their personalitites and motivations are just fantastic. Arthur as a crime boss is just delightful as is Merlin as the charismatic bartender of the speakeasy (even tho he is so much more than that). It’s tense, it’s violent, it’s romantic and it has a happy ending, what more could I ask for? This author writes so freaking amazing and I love everything she’s written so if you like this one, you should totally check out all her other stuff because it’s just as amazing. Also, Arthur is known as the “Golden Knight” and for some reason that just made me love it even more. Arthur and Merlin are brilliant and she just gets the point across so well of how much they love and get each other and that’s one of the reaons why I love it so much, it’s just... they belong together and I love the journey (the hearthache and the love and everything in between) until they get to the point of actual happiness and understanding.

Summary: Arthur is given a compass that is unable to tell north from south, but always points him to where Merlin is.
Comment: Oh, this fic. It follows Arthur and Melrin throughout the centuries, with Arthur always finding his way to Merlin. Soulmate-y of sorts and just lovely in the way this gets the point across that they belong together and that they’ll always find each other.
2. The Reincarnation Situation by orphan_account
Lenght: 16,591
Summary: My series finale gift to the Merlin fandom. Reincarnation. Merlin and Arthur only remember their past lives for one night a year - New Year's Eve. This is a quick tour (and it's not cracky like the title suggests, I swear).
Merlin still thinks that perhaps the dragon was right and one day Arthur will return as a king destined to save the people of Albion, but that day has not yet come. Arthur has not missed a single moment of life since Merlin laid him to rest in the waters of Avalon but the lives he has lived have not been for his people or for the greater good, they have been just for Merlin.
Comment: SO, SO, SO much love for this one. Again, anothe bitter-sweet read but so worth it, it tugs at your heart but comforts you in the knowledge that they’ll always have each other. Fantastic narrative and I love each of the reincarnations shown. It also has a lovely podfic. Soulmates is something I’ve always been a sucker for and this fic is amazing in how it portrays them througout time and the intensity of remembering for one night, who they really are.
3. Tulips Are Better; Dragons Are Best by sweetiejelly
Lenght: 58,627
Summary: Arthur loses a bet with Morgana and ends up on The Bachelor. As he identifies as bisexual, the pool of candidates is quite diverse and includes one Merlin Emrys, his ex. Arthur thinks it's fate. Merlin thinks it's bollocks. Thus begins (again) their courtship.
Comment: So delightful and fun and angsty. Arthur’s complete dismissal of anyone that isn’t Merlin is just so fun to read, how he wants to just send everyone home as soon as he realizes Merlin is there is just hilarious and shows how gone he is. A Modern AU with magic with boths sides wanting each other but with issues that need talking over and mending before they get together and Merlin’s magic being as in love with Arthur as he is, is just one of the things that make me love this as much as I do. Stupid and stubborn boys make my heart melt with their longing. The art is so lovely and adds so much to it. Read it, it’s fantastic.
4. You bring music to my silent world by Balthamos
Lenght: 49,818
Summary: Arthur and Merlin are thrown together as children when Merlin’s mother moves into the Pendragon Manor as the new housekeeper, bringing her deaf son Merlin with her. Arthur is a loud and obnoxious child, whereas Merlin is quiet but not as shy as everyone thinks. The two children become fast friends, but as they grow up together things begin to change, due to the pressure of wanting to be normal, and the growing lack of communication between the pair. Growing up is never easy and the graceful friendship they had as children gets lost as they reach their teenage years, but through their difficulties they develop a deeper, stronger relationship, one far more permanent.
Comment: I love, love, love, love this one. Like anything by this author is amazing, so you should totally check them out if you haven’t, but this one, gosh, it’s so lovely it hurts.
5. Where the Hurt Is by undersomestairs
Lenght: 12,349
Summary: For this Kink Me! Merlin prompt: They were childhood/teenage sweethearts but Arthur's family moved away (because Uther detested Merlin but Arthur doesn't know this) and they promise to write. After Uther's death Arthur finds all the letters from Merlin he never received. All the time he thought Merlin had forgotten him. Arthur seeks him out.
Comment: Oh my god, this one made me cry. It takes your heart and stomps on it and then mends is back but not before it kind of destroys you. How you see Merlin losing hope, Arthur’s feelings after he realized Merlin didn’t forget him but that it was Uther and then his sorrow over what he thinks lost. Read it, it’s just beautiful.
6. License to Thrill by lady_ragnell
Lenght: 14,174
Summary: Merlin's employees bet him the recipe for the most addictive cocoa in the world that he can't find out what the hot blond who comes into his chocolate shop does for a living within the month. He ends up getting far more than he bargained for.
Comment: Arthur as James Bond (kind of) and Merlin as the chocolatier who steals his heart via his sweet tooth and shameless flirting from Arthur’s part because Merlin is lovely. So incredibly good and it has a podfic by wildwildwoods which is also incredibly lovely. Read/listen to it, you’lll feel better after.
7. Remember, Remember by winterstorrm

Comment: So, anything by this author is amazing (please, check out all of their other stories because they’re fantastic), but this one just breaks my heart. Arthur’s longing and regret is so palpable through every word. His love for Merlin is just so big and I always love to read something where I get to see how much Arthur feels for Merlin, how much Merlin means to him, how much he loves and needs Merlin.

Comment: This series has a special place in my heart because apart from being so bloody good it made my head spin and has me (still because it’s a WIP) on the edge of my seat, I was actually in Vegas and stayed in the hotel in which Arthur and Merlin are in the first two installments. Being able to read while on the locations described in it, made me feel an even bigger connection with the world. This is an absolutely addicting read that before you know it you’ll have read the 5 available works and will be eagerly awaiting the next.

Summary: Considering Arthur's future wife will be chosen less for compatibility than for her political value, Merlin may be the only marriage he'll have that won't end in bloodshed or a great deal of fortifying wine.
Comment: Lovely, so very, very, lovely. SO many great lines and the old married couple dynamic and them being so in love is just brilliant. Canon Era, Magic Reveal and lots of love and pinining and getting together. Please do yourself a favor and read it if you haven’t, and if you have, do it again because it’s just amazing. There are moments here in which their love and worry is so palpable it hurts, I love it so much.

Summary: Fucking Arthur, he thinks, pushing his head against the seat. It’s not so much that he’s breaking promises left and right by bringing up that thing between them in public again; it's just his ever-irritating sense of entitlement. It’s Arthur being a prick and thinking he can go around doing anything he wants sometimes, because obviously, obviously the entire world exists only to amuse him.
Comment: This is just one of my all time favorite fics ever. Oblivious, pining boys in love are my favorites. Also, pet-names. A lovely Modern AU with stupid boys who won’t talk to each other. I read this at least 3 times a year, yes, I love it that much.

Summary: There was at least a dozen reasons why Arthur, Prince of Wales, couldn't marry Merlin, bird-whisperer, but it didn't stop him from thinking it was the best idea in the world.
Comment: This is one of the most romantic, heart-wrenching and loved filled reads I’ve ever encountered. It’s so insanely beautiful and it tugs on my heartstrings because of the absolute love, devotion and longing that fills each word. The knights as little robins is one of the most adorable concepts ever and if there’s something I love is seeing Arthur not being able to cope with how much he loves Merlin and this conveys it in such a way that it puts fairytales to shame.
12. We Pull These Jobs To Make A Little Money (No One Gets Hurt If They Don’t Act Funny) by leashy_babes

Comment: Arthur is so smitten with Merlin he almost forgets what he actually was there to do. If you haven’t noticied, besotted!Arthur is one of my most favorite things ever and this nails it. I love the concept and the development is fantastic, please read it if you haven’t it’s such an entertaining and lovely read and I love it a lot.

Comment: Merlin is a jedi, how awesome is that??? Don’t you ever just want to see everyone in a Star Wars movie??? Because this is it. And it is perfect.

Below the cut I shall link fourteen underappreciated fics that I adore for week two of @madaboutmerlin‘s Merlin Writer Month. Most are Merlin/Gwaine, but there are a couple gen/other pairings ones. Gens will be listed first, other pairings second, and then the Merlin/Gwaine ones. Each grouping shall go from fluffiest to angstiest because why not.

My Comments: A newer/recently completed fic that had me on the edge of my seat for nearly every update. Definitely wish it could have been longer, but the pacing is excellent for the length that it is. Has drama, intrigue, and a happy (although maybe a little bittersweet) ending.

Gwaine has had worse scrapes than this: he just can't think of any right now. A boar hunt with the knights goes terribly wrong, but as things progress, it turns out that that's the least of his problems. WARNINGS: Language, violence and sexual themes.
My Comments: With dreamwalking, whump, physical hurt/comfort, emotional hurt/comfort, and Gwaine being obsessed with apples, this fic has it all. A great look into Gwaine and his past that I think deserves more attention. [I will say however that there is referenced past CSA in this one. It does not go into much detail, but it caught me by surprise and I would caution anyone who is sensitive to that before reading this one.]

My Comments: A nice long fic with great world building and a glimpse into what the Dragonlord culture might have been. With wonderful art (and more on the way!) by WhimsyCatcher, you really can’t go wrong with this fic. Centers around two very sweet relationships and honestly if you just want to immerse yourself into a new AU for a few hours, this is a great fic to go for. I mean, it’s 103k and I read the whole thing in a day so if that doesn’t tell you it’s good, idk what will.
A Delicate Thing by freezerjerky
