Last thing you bought online? Did you like it? OMG OMG so I got Angela an Army Bomb!!!!!! for her birthday!!!! It was HELLLL looking for sealed ones that were already onhand, but fortunately I was able to find one from this really nice seller a few days ago and the shipping was quick as well. I’m just a little worried because the outbox has a little dent on it :( but it was the best onhand offer I could find so I got it before anybody could call dibs. I still hope she likes it! I got her batteries too so that she can try lighting it up as soon as she has it. :D
Could you date someone who didn’t drive (and didn’t show an interest in ever getting their license, either)?  I feel like this is such a petty thing to make a big deal about...if they knew how to commute or any other way to get to their destination, I don’t think this should be a problem. It would only be an issue to me if they refused to get a license in a very I-generally-lack-ambition kind of way.
How would you react if your artwork became famous?  I don’t have any to show off to begin with. I love appreciating art, but creating it was never a forte of mine.
Would you get your nipples pierced?  No, I don’t plan on getting any piercings. How many people know your birthday?  Outside of my family, my best friends. I think everyone else relies on Facebook to be reminded, which is fine with me.
Has anyone ever tried to ruin a relationship you were in?  No. Quite the contrary, really...I was sometimes informed about red flags taking place, which of course my stubborn ass ignored.
Have you ever watched a whole hour long infomercial?  Probably, as a kid. The channel from which I used to watch WWE aired these really long infomercials so I would watch those while waiting for like Raw or whatever show was going on after.
What is your current MySpace song?  I never hung out on Myspace. I had an account, but I was too young for it so it wasn’t long before I got bored.
What is your favorite kind of meat to put on your sandwich?  Pulled pork or fried chicken.
Which one of your exes do you feel like you have the most chemistry with?  I only have one ex.
How do you feel about people who make Facebook profiles for their pets? I find it really cute. But I personally wouldn’t put in as much effort lol.
Have you ever personally known a pair of conjoined twins?  Hmmmmmmmm I don’t think so.
What was the most disturbing thing you have ever heard your mother say? She threatened suicide in front of me and my dad in a very calm way when I was around 11, I think? Maybe 12, idk. I haven’t actually thought about that moment in an extremely long time until this question. I’ll move on now and shove the memory at the very very back of my head before I get sad.
Is there something in particular you like to look at photos of? What is it?  Aside from members of BTS (lol), interior design inspirations.
Chewy chocolate-chip cookies: like or dislike?  Ooh, love. When I bite into a cookie it hassssss to ooze chocolate, otherwise I would be underwhelmed.
If your boyfriend/girlfriend wanted to dress only in the opposite sex’s clothing, would you support that? If not, would you leave them?  Support.
Do you think your grandmother is/was beautiful?  They both are.
Which of your fields of interest are you a total expert on?  Anything that has to do with writing (except poems), I guess? I like being able to give people advice and tips when it comes to that.
When was the last time you got all dolled up?  Last July when we had a big PR media launch thingy and I couldn’t afford to look like shit on Zoom.
Do you ever name objects? (i.e. mp3 players, guitars, cars, etc.)  Never.
Do you have a criminal record?  Not criminal but it’s possibleeeee that I have some kind of record on my license from the time I got stopped by an officer in Alabang, lmao. It was a minor offense from a tiny part of the town so I don’t actually know if they filed it, but it’s possible.
Last person you took a nap with?  I don’t really nap with other people. I hate falling asleep in front of others to begin with.
Does seeing your mother cry automatically make you feel sad as well?  No.
Do you think someone likes the same person you like?  I don’t like anybody.
Do you want your life to stay the way it is right now forever?  No, I do not want to stay in a pandemic and not get to maximize my life the way it’s supposed to be enjoyed forever.
Have you ever been to craigslist.com?  I’ve never checked it out; idk if we have that here?
What about eBay?  I also dunno if they operate here so no, I’ve never bothered.
Have you ever used Nair?  Not Nair, but I’ve used Veet before.
Are you medicated?  Nope.
Do you shape/fill in your eyebrows?  I never do stuff to my eyebrows except shave them.
Have you ever stolen/borrowed clothes from an ex?  Several articles of clothing were left behind here, yeah. I never had the chance to give them back because I stupidly thought we were going to get back together eventually. By the time I moved on the timing was already off, so the clothes stayed with me untillll...just a few days ago, actually – when I finally cleaned up my room and got rid of a bunch of knickknacks that accumulated here over the years, including all her shirts and sweaters and stuff.
Could you make a statement about anything political?  The 2022 presidential election landscape looks like complete shit and I’m nearly at that point where I want to stop giving a fuck about this country’s future.
Do you think you’ve already met your soulmate?  No.
Do you get the feeling something good will happen in your life soon?  I think I’m already living in it, haha.
Do you enjoy romantic movies, even when they’re cliche?  Sure, but cliché is also hit and miss for me. I love Titanic and Love Actually, but I cannot stand movies like Me Before You and The Notebook. I guess it depends on certain executions, like the acting, screenplay, casting, etc.
Have you been to McDonald’s in the past month?  No, not inside. We did drive-thru within the last month, though.
Have you ever slept over at your best friend’s house?  Not at Andi’s, but I have at Angela’s.
How often do you go bowling?  Extremely rarely. I can’t tell you the last time I went bowling.
Last time you were in an apartment?  Like 2007 when I visited my aunt back when she still lived in one. None of my friends have their own apartments.
Have you ever seen a live seahorse?  I don’t think so.
Would you like to have your own yacht? I mean I wouldn't say no if you offered it to me for free, but I'm not exactly interested in one. < Same.
Winnie the Pooh or Tigger?  Tigger always made me laugh as a kid.
What’s the unhealthiest thing you’ve eaten today?  Luncheon meat, I think? I didn’t go overboard with the junk food today.
Has a stranger ever offered to buy you a drink?  Hm, not that I can recall.
What is something you’d be happy to receive as a gift, that doesn’t cost a lot?  A bag of the salted egg chips that I really like costs like 30 bucks, or roughly 60 US cents.
What kind of music does your significant other/crush like to listen to?  I don’t have any irl crushes, can I use a celebrity crush instead? HAHA he’s heavily into jazz and whenever he gets asked for music recos he always gives jazz artists from like the 50s and 60s.
Who did you have your first kiss with? Do you remember what colour his/her eyes were?  Gab. Dark brown.
Are there any themes from TV shows that you like to sing along to? The Big Bang Theory and Friends; and then I also liked humming to the themes of Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, and BoJack Horseman. The Phineas & Ferb theme was also a lot of fun to sing along to.
Do you eat dessert after dinner? No, I never do that. I’m usually already full after dinner, and we don’t always have sweets at home anyway.
Have you ever had too much to drink and felt embarrassed about your behavior the next day?  Sure.
When you go out drinking, what do you prefer to drink?  Cocktails. I very rarely go for hard drinks/shots, especially if I brought my own car.
What was the last animal that you saw?  Dog.
What was the last thing that you said to one of your siblings?  I just told my sister I was done using her laptop so she can have it back. My Memories of 2020 DVD turned out to be region-locked so I have to use her laptop every time I want to watch it :(
What is the most expensive thing that you’ve purchased that you paid for:  My Map of the Soul photobook cost me around 5k in total.
What is your favorite messaging program?  Messenger.
Do you eat fast food more than 5 times a week?  Wow no. Aside from being extremely unhealthy, that’s also a LOT of spending??
Have you ever almost drowned?  Yes.
Have you ever learned something shocking about someone through Facebook?  I mean I’ve had to learn about more than one family death through my Facebook feed, which sucks but is nothing I have control over. Otherwise the most shocking thing I’ve seen is probably classmates from high school having their own kids, but at this point I’m used to it already.
What’s the scariest living animal that you’ve petted?  I’m not really afraid of carrying/petting animals especially if there’s a guide or expert nearby, but the most daring one was probably the crocodile I volunteered to hold in Palawan.
Do you remember the first conversation you ever had with the person you currently have feelings for?  Not at all.
Do you dread certain days of the week? If yes, what day/s and why?  I hate Mondays for obvious reasons lol. I don’t know anyone who is actively cheery about reporting back to work.
If you eat oatmeal, do you have it plain or do you have certain toppings that you like to add to it?  I never eat oatmeal. I had that every single day for breakfast from like kindergarten to 4th grade and I vowed never to take a spoonful of it again.
What is the funniest or strangest thing you’ve ever heard somebody say in their sleep?  I dunno. I used to keep a log of the things my ex used to say in her sleep and a great deal of them were hilarious, but obviously I deleted that note a long time ago.
Choose one - Butterfinger, Milky Way, Snickers:  Butterfinger.
Do you use Mozilla Firefox? Nopes.
Who is your favorite person to hug? Angela and Laurice.
Have you ever had to have a mug shot?  Nope.
What was the last thing you carried to your room?  Kimi.
When was the last time you had a late night phone call?  WELL over a year ago.

my favorite thing is monsters (book one) by emil ferris 🧟‍♀️🔍🧛‍♀️
quick synopsis: adult (coming-of-age story from the perspective of a young girl, but definitely targeted at an older audience)/graphic novel. set in late 60′s chicago, the fictional graphic diary of ten year old karen reyes recounts her experiences as she tries to solve the murder of her beautiful and enigmatic upstairs neighbor, a holocaust survivor.
page count: 416
rating:★★★ (this is a hard rating for me...think 3.7-3.9....oscillating to a 4....4.2....I don’t know, man)
review: I keep doing this fun and cool thing where I buy a book without realizing it’s the first in an (unfinished) series, and then end up being cast woefully adrift by reality. that’s what I did with this one. purely based on the artwork alone, I can tell you that this book is a treat for the eyes. a lot is going on here, and there’s something so engrossing about being swept up into the chaotic pen strokes and colors. the story is an interesting one, and not entirely what you expect. the characters are all distinct and layered---really riveting people who feel near-painfully real. as the first book in a two (?) book series, it leaves off with the central (and now additional) mysteries unsolved---which leaves the reading experience feeling unfinished and kind of disjointed. I’m stuck in a bit of a confusing mid-zone with this one, where I truly....well, I can't say I enjoyed it, since this story is so much more than that? I was...fascinated? enveloped? I’ll be reading the next one, definitely.
one of us is lying by karen m. mcmanus 🥜🚓📱
quick synopsis: young adult/contemporary mystery/suspense. five students walk into detention. only four make it out alive. who did it...and who is lying?
page count: 361
rating:★★★ (firm 3.7)
review: the breakfast club....but with murder? if you’re down for that, you’ll enjoy this book! it certainly kept my attention. and MAN was this a suspenseful and super stressful read. (if you need a book that’ll make you go “wow, I’m glad I’m not in high school anymore”, this is it lol!) there’s a bunch of really interesting character studies going on in this one, and it definitely lends to a tense and involving read. the only reason the rating isn’t any higher is just that certain elements of it didn’t work...entirely...for me. that doesn’t mean that they were bad...just not what I...wanted? there’s two more books in this series, and while I’m not anxious to get my hands on them, I’m fairly sure I would read them!
murder at morrington hall: a stella and lyndy mystery by clara mckenna 🐎🍵💏
quick synopsis: adult/historical mystery. 1905. stella kendrick, a lively and confident american heiress, is tricked into an arranged marriage by her coldly ambitious father. her groom-to-be is viscount “lyndy” lyndhurst, who is both roughish and financially strapped. despite this rough beginning, they find themselves oddly drawn to each other. could they actually be a good match? however, all courtship is set aside when the pair discover the vicar who was  to marry them----dead in the library. now they must work together to solve the crime and find the culprit.
page count: 304
rating: ★★
review: ugh, it pains me to say, as I thought I was signing myself up for a fun turn-of-the-century murder mystery/romance...but this was just...meh. a meh story. I feel like it had potential to be an enjoyable, soapy romp with a dash of sensuality...but it was none of those things? (basically, I wanted a self-indulgent and delicious slice of chocolate cake...but I ended up with a week-old raisin muffin.) it didn't help that I had some issues with certain things the writer included. in particular, I REALLY didn’t like the equating of fat = mean/ugly and the repeated use of the word “bulbous” to describe certain characters noses----I had to do a quick google search to see what the hell the author was talking about. still not sure if she was trying to imply that the characters had rhinophyma/rosacea or just that they had bigger, “ugly” noses, but neither is good lmao. whenever you put a “plain/regular-degular person” with a big nose up against your array of stock White People™ characters with thin noses and angular faces, AND make those “plain” characters play the “wow, I’m so ugly but these characters are so pretty oh woe is me” bullshit in their inner monologue, I’m dipping. I’ve collected my paycheck, clocked out, left the building. (your story is already about a bunch of rich, straight, white people in 1905...I’m already skeptical, don’t test me. jk, but also not.) I’m fairly sure this would have caused a decent amount of people to DNF this book, but I’m a stubborn little bitch, and if I paid actual money for the hardcover copy at goddamn Barnes and Noble, I’m reading it. this is all to say that....if I’m being thrown out of enjoying your soapy historical murder mystery to gripe about random shit, there’s a problem. other than that? carpet was described a lot, the twist was decent, the romance was okay (no smut---or anything even vaguely close to romantic/sexual tension---and the kisses were not described at all, so I have no clue if either of them do more than press their lips together while admiring each others pale necks, but whatever), and the setting was the most interesting thing about this book (a crumbling english estate in the countryside?? sign me tf up). I won’t be reading anything more in this series, but that cover is pretty cool isn’t it? (I don’t know that the vase had anything to do with the story I read, but it does look really neat.) sidenote: hate to be a smarmy asshole, as I know full well how much work goes into writing, and I’m in no way trying to shame the author...this book just didn’t do it for me.
wilder girls by rory power 🌳🦷🥀
quick synopsis: young adult/horror/mystery. on an isolated island off the coast of maine, raxter school for girls is under quarantine. a mysterious disease has wracked the island, leaving teachers dead, students twisted and changed, and the woods that surround it dangerous and wild. while the disease consumes the island, the girls wait---for help, for the cure that was promised to them. but when hetty’s best friend disappears, she must venture out of the safety of the school, past the gate that separates them from the woods---and what she finds will change everything.

rating: ★★★★★
review: powerful, blistering, and utterly terrifying. that’s what immediately comes to mind when thinking about this book. I read it in a breakneck pace, devouring the whole thing in a feverish five? hour haze. once it was over, I sat bleary-eyed, the air around me feeling different than before, my hands tense and my stomach jumping. “you were a good one.” I said softly, kissing the spine. so yeah, it’s good. it’s very good. heartbreaking and awful and shockingly beautiful. this one hurts. I felt this one in my bones, in my soul. read it.
lovely war by julie berry 🌷💥💞
quick synopsis: young adult (but the youngest character is 18...so I think this could comfortably slot into adult)/historical (with a touch of fantasy). the intersecting stories of hazel, james, aubrey, and colette: a classical pianist from london, a british would-be-architect-turned-soldier, a harlem-born ragtime genius in the u.s. army, and a belgian orphan with a gorgeous voice and a devastating past----told by the goddess aphrodite, who must spin the tale or face judgment on mount olympus.
page count: 468
rating: ★★★★★
review: do you know how many times I CRIED while reading this book? because I certainly don’t! I lost track, as there are simply too many painful and beautiful things contained in this book. heart-wrenching, sumptuous and intoxicating, vivid in the best and worst ways, sharp and soft at the same time. I met my boyfriend while he was still active-duty military, so the wartime/seperation themes hit me very personally....but even without that, this book is excellent. expertly weaving together mythology and history in one gripping piece of art, it left me with a wistful smile on my face and a faint ache in my heart. it’s good. very good.
we have always lived in the castle by shirley jackson 🏡💀🐱
quick synopsis: young adult? adult? who knows!/mystery/horror. mary katherine blackwood is eighteen years old and lives with her sister constance. she has often thought that with any luck at all she would have been born a werewolf, because the two middle fingers on both of her hands are the same length, but she has had to be content with what she has. she dislikes washing herself, and dogs, and noise. she likes her sister constance, and richard plantagenet, and amanita phalloides, the death-cup mushroom. everyone else in her family is dead.
page count: 146
rating: ★★★★ (4.5/4.6!)
review: delightfully creepy and utterly odd, with a full cast of extremely unlikable characters and one of the strangest protagonists I’ve ever read. at NO TIME did I have any idea where the story was going, which lead to an completely bizarre (but fun!) reading experience. twilight-zonian/gothic...but better. very eager to read more of shirley jackson’s catalogue, because that lady sure knew how to weave a tale. very glad I read this one.
sadie by courtney summers 📻👥🎙
quick synopsis: young adult (mc is nineteen, and imo I feel like this slides into adult tbh)/contemporary/true crime. told from the alternating perspectives of nineteen-year-old sadie, who runs away from home to find her younger sister’s killer, and a true crime podcast exploring sadie’s disappearance.
page count: 308
rating: ★★★
review: sad, awful, raw. that’s this book, simultaneously bright red and angry and deep blue, sadness upon sadness. this book reminds me of every true crime documentary I’ve ever watched---how it wraps itself up in a depressingly soft way, all the emptiness left behind and everything forever-changed. gives me the same icky voyeuristic feeling consuming any true crime content always leaves with me---this peculiar feeling of peering in to others heartbreak, of their horrors. this is a hard book. it’s difficult and not easy to stomach---and it never lets up. know that before you go in. what you may expect/want is NOT what you’ll get. and that’s the trueness of this book. I have my own personal feelings regarding the story, thus the three star rating, but that’s on ME. this book is incredibly well-written and insanely gripping. I finished it the same night I started reading it. if you want a gritty, intense read set in the very bleak reality of our world, this is your book.

# OF 2020 BOOKS READ SO FAR: 17/50
in reflection: my goal for this month was to read ten books, and I did that ...plus four more! so I’m pretty proud of myself, lol! there were a lot of stellar reads this month, and I had so much fun discovering them all! definitely a TON of new favorites to add to my bookshelf! :^)
disclaimer: all fourteen of the books I read this month include/focus on potentially triggering content, although they do fluctuate on the scale of intensity and subject matter. my wrap-up reviews do not contain spoilers/a comprehensive list of potential triggers. I urge everyone to do their own research regarding the content of these books if you’re interested in reading them, and I’m always available for questions. my reviews are just that, reviews, and books that work for me may not work for you (and vice versa).

Until recently she was living life to the full and filling her days with doggie play dates and family snuggle time. So why, then, the sad face? It seems some dark clouds rolled in with a (treatable) medical diagnosis, and when her owner couldn't offer the care she needed, Storm came to stay with us. She's an adorable low-rider for sure, but it's what's on the inside that counts. Thanks to her calm nature, friendly manners with all species, sizes and sexes, and the promise of a playful side (she likes squeaky toys!), this tiny charmer has proven she's beautiful both inside and out. She knows how to sit on command, mouths treats very softly and walks wonderfully on leash, and though not clamoring for snuggles, she accepts all handling with a quiet, gentle grace. Lovable with a capital L, Storm deserves only the best for the rest of her long, happy life and we're all hoping that she finds it soon in the arms of a new forever family. While wanting to give adequate time for her to acclimate to the shelter environment before the assessment, her medical condition is pressing and we need to expedite her leaving the shelter for further medical evaluation. This comment is being made to indicate that the lack of SAFER assessment is not due to an inability to handle but rather due to the urgency of addressing the medical condition. Storm has allowed some handling with a slow approach in the care center. Summary (1):: 1/18: When introduced to the male greeter dog on leash, Storm appears overall fearful in the environment and turns away from approach. Date of intake:: 1/17/2018 Summary:: At first, Storm backed away from the counselor. After a little bit, she allowed handling. Date of initial:: 1/17/2018 Summary:: Storm was timid but allowed handling. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner Recommendations comments:: No children: Storm is reported to snap at the children in the home when they tried to pet her. In order to keep children safe and respect Storm's comfort level, we are recommending an adult-only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Storm's bite history and willingness to escalate in situations in which she is uncomfortable, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training for Storm; more aversive methods are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of future aggression. Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression Potential challenges comments:: Storm has been timid in new situations in the care center, which matches reports from her previous home. Storm's bite history indicates that when uncomfortable she may escalate to a bite. STORM IS RESCUE ONLY…..TO SAVE THIS PUP YOU MUST FILL OUT APPLICATIONS WITH AT LEAST 3 NEW HOPE RESCUES. I traded in my Focus ST for a Challenger 392 and nearly doubled my horsepower via /r/cars
I traded in my Focus ST for a Challenger 392 and nearly doubled my horsepower
The term "mixed bag" has been rattling around in my head these past 2 weeks, ever since I traded in the first new car I ever bought for a road legal speed boat. "Mixed emotions" in that while I thoroughly enjoy my new 6.4 liter V8, an upgrade in power, I feel like I have downgraded some ways from things I had taken for granted in my little ST. Let me talk about my 2016 Focus ST in retrospect for a moment after owning it for over 3 years.
https://i.imgur.com/G2QmPfJ.jpg
I bought my ST with 8 miles on the odometer. I paid $28k before taxes. Prior to this, I was driving a 2004 Silverado pickup, so transitioning to a small Euro-Ford was jarring. I'm a tall boy and twisting into the small car was difficult at first, but I quickly learned how to jump in and out well enough that I didn't notice my audible groans every time I entered and exited the car. Once I was in the car, I found the Recaro bolstered seats were actually very comfortable. I liked the feel of the clutch, the (real) carbon fiber accent trim was tasteful, and the transmission was notchy. The 9 speaker Sony sound system with a sub woofer in the rear was excellent. But still, the car needed some massaging to be just right.
Stock, the Focus ST is quiet. At first I chopped off the mid-pipe resonator, and while that initially pleased me, I eventually upgraded to a Borla catback exhaust. That, coupled with a 50/50 blow off valve, and she sounded MEAN. Listen for yourself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Sd2MyqWLaM
I installed a Cobb short shift plate and reduced the throw of my stick by 40%. That was major. I had it tuned by Stratified and the ST awoke even more with power everywhere. It wasn't lacking power anywhere for the size of the car. The tune also gave me "flat foot shifting" that allowed me to clutch-in while keeping my right foot on the acceleration. I beat out cars that were legitimately faster than me just because the driver couldn't shift as fast as I could. But I knew where my Focus stood on the power poll. A similarly modified GTI was faster, a WRX could launch better with its AWD, and Mazdaspeed3's just had more displacement. The ST was a gnarly little dog that wanted to bite everyone, and it took a lot of restraint not to embarrass myself when others wanted to "play".
The biggest downside to the ST in the 3 years I owned it was the size. It is a compact car. And on longer drives my body would ache. The door sill where I rested my elbow was hard and would cause discomfort. The space where my legs went was cramped. The Recaro seats, while comfortable at first, became restrictive after some time on the road. The small gas tank meant that I would need to refill more often, though I would learn to enjoy those moments when I could get out and stretch. The car also had an abysmal u-turn radius, making city driving sometimes difficult. All of these discomforts aside, I loved this car. She was my first 4 wheeled investment, and I will fight for my baby.
Then I saw this. https://i.imgur.com/UD1flWp.jpg
So I traded in my 2016 Ford Focus ST for a 2016 Dodge Challenger Scat Pack Shaker.
https://i.imgur.com/dv87QZc.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/dZp73UT.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/cx9h7KK.jpg
I wasn't even planning on trading in my Focus. Honestly, total impulse buy. I was at the dealership buying a new work van when the salesman asked me if I wanted to test drive a Scat Pack for fun. I test drove one and was amazed, so I asked what they had used. In their lot, not sitting for even 24 hours yet, was this white Scat Pack with the "Shaker" package. A 2016 with only 5,000 miles. An older gentleman had bought the car, detailed it every day, and almost never drove it before he traded it in on a new Jeep. I've talked to the previous owner, he claims to never have taken it faster than 90 mph, and I believe that. I was able to negotiate the price down to the low $30k range, which is a good deal on this car. I'm sure the salesman was having a great day, 2 car sales in a row.
So now I have upgraded from 252 stock horsepower from a turbo in the Ford, to 485hp naturally aspirated in the Dodge. I've seen claims that Dodge sandbags the horsepower ratings for their cars and the 392 cubic inch engine makes something closer to 500hp, but I wouldn't know. I haven't put it on a dyno and the car is completely stock. And Even stock this car is maddening. It makes me wonder how insane it's 700HP bigger brother is. This is such a disjointed experience from what the ST offered. The Challenger is not nimble. The challenger is not small. The challenger is not fuel efficient. No, what the Challenger IS, is raw.
This is the fastest car I've ever driven. It accelerates from 0-60 in the low 4's when using the launch control. When you aren't using launch, the back wheels are begging to cut traction and leave 2 wide black tire marks down the road behind you. Once you catch traction it throws you into the back of your seat and doesn't stop accelerating. On my ST the only option for a transmission was a 6 speed manual. My Scat Pack is an automatic. Now, I am a manual enthusiast through and through. In my opinion a standard transmission is key to any enthusiast car and I will die on that hill. But regrettably this 8 speed auto is good. Real good. Push the shifter to the left and the car goes into a mode where shifts are managed by paddles on the steering wheel. Thankfully the transmission doesn't think it is smarter than you; It will hold at redline until you shift up, it will lug the engine until you shift down. And the shifts are quick.
People will joke that these cars are land yachts and I have to agree. While it does corner better than I would expect a 4,000lb+ car too, she ain't no sport car. If you preach "slow car fast", you should try driving one of these because any speed cornering feels too fast. Although I have started to feel like a king of the road while driving this car. It's large and absorbs all the bumps while being mean and loud. The Shaker package adds the cold air intake in the middle of the hood, and it's cool to see it move around and "shake" with the engine.
The interior is a mix of good and bad. Leather A/C and heated seats are gifts from the automotive Gods, and I am grateful that the previous owner spec'd this one out to have them. It's also so wide inside I have room to spread way out while driving. I feel like I'm driving a 500hp couch. The infotainment is.. passable. I would be much happier if it had Android Auto, but apparently that was an upgrade for '17 models and newer. The real low-light for the interior is the sound system. It's a cheap 6 speaker system that rattles the doors with any amount of bass and the sound is hollow. As an audiophile this really pisses me off, my Focus sounded so much better. I'd argue that I have a 8 speaker 392-watt sound system under the hood of this car, and yeah I enjoy that roar, but not being able to rock out like I could in my ST hurts.
Other ways the Focus ST was better would be visibility. Looking out the rear both cars sucked equally, but sitting in the Challenger it's quickly apparent just how wide the B and C pillars are. You could lose the entire state of Wyoming behind those things. To make things worse, the mirrors on the Dodge are postage stamp sized. They look good from looking at the car on the outside, but you can't see anything in those things. Merging in between lanes is a lot more stressful than I am used to. The scat pack doesn't even get any safety features such as blind spot monitoring, so I'm on my own out there.
Cheap, fast, luxury; You can only pick 2. When you buy this car, you are really only buying one thing. The engine. Everything else comes second, and the Chally isn't a luxury car. The few niceties that are optioned out on this car are welcome, but they are almost completely offset by the laughably cheap parts also in here. **It is comfortable though**, so I will give it that. My Focus ST was less comfortable, but the quality was higher.
I'm not sure what the next few years will hold for me and the 392. I already miss my ST, but I don't regret my new purchase. With a car that can hit 180+ mph I don't think I will be bored anytime soon. I'll see you guys on the road.

I had my little munchkin, my bundle of joy in my arms along with my older naughty brat and life could not have been happier. Months rolled on taking care of my wonderful little treasure while pursuing a full time career that knew no hours of travel and work.
A year went by and it was little one’s first birthday. Saree was my choice for outfit for the party. To my worst nightmare despite all my endeavors to shrink myself and squeeze in, I had to put away one blouse after the other! Angered, I took out the weighing scale and checked the reading. Alarmed! As if it were a ghost. It read 74.6! I reset the scale to recheck as if the machine would show a different reading to please me! Again it said, 74.6.
I had always been in a great shape and looked younger than my age. Even after my first delivery, I shelled the extra pounds over couple of months. An unknown and undoubtedly annoying sound reverberated calling me FAT. I remembered my sister jokingly telling me that I looked like an amma. Though that time I had retaliated telling her that well yes I am amma of two!
I am 161 cm and medium built. By no means could I call myself fit at 74.6 kgs! That day I pulled up a pair of jeans with a pullover for the party. It was almost the end of December 2014. My New Year Resolution was Weight Loss. Weight loss! OMG that too almost 15 kgs! I was 26 years and 52 kg before my first pregnancy. Post-partum my weight stabilized at 57 kgs and since I looked almost toned, I really did not care about it. I had tried  gym once earlier out of hobby and I so well remembered how I wasted the subscription! The entire hour I spent there was at looking at the clock to shout out loud that it was sixty minutes and time to leave! Crazy dieting; well no way was this my choice. Outdoors anyways gave me nightmares with so many dogs around and my scared soul finding corners to evade them. In short, I was totally confounded with the how part. Eventually I resorted to Google baba to look for ‘my kind’ of means to smoothen my tyres.
Having done all this research, I realised working out was the only choice available apart from the 7 day GM diet (in which you can eat the permitted item/s for the day in as much quantity as your body demands) (you may like to read thru the link that acted like a blessing in that time of crisis https://www.thefitindian.com/the-fastest-indian-vegetarian-diet-to-lose-weight/).
My exercise regime comprised of-
10 minutes of warm up
45 minutes of cardio including treadmill, cross-trainer and stationary bike
30 minutes of strength training one body part each day
20 minutes of floor exercises and yoga on alternate days

I had the temptation of climbing up the weighing scale every single day to check for any improvement but in vain 😦 But let me admit, though my body did feel soar with its new routine, even if there was no change in weight, I did feel more vibrant and energized even in the first week! I kept wondering how I had not enjoyed working out earlier! On the lighter side, maybe I enjoy bigger challenges more 🙂 After I got my body accustomed at the gym for a week, I started with first day of GM diet. Being a vegetarian, I searched for the veg version of the program. Exercise was supposed to be light to moderate on these days. Since eating was confined to select items on each day, I decided just to go for cardio, floor or yoga sessions on these days and skip strength that requires lots of protein intake after the regime.
Day 1       Morning weight 74.5 kg
The first day is supposed to be the Fruit Day (minus mangoes and grapes). It was the month of February and I spent the day munching on apples, pomegranates, guavas and oranges. The motivation to get lean was so strong that I truly did not feel hungry.
Day 2       Morning weight 73.5 kg (OMG! OMG! OMG! 1 kg gone in a single day)
On the second day of the GM diet one is supposed to eat only Vegetables that could be raw, boiled or very lightly sauteed. However, one can start with a boiled potato with butter in the morning. I had bought the exotic vegetable stock the day before only and likewise commenced the day with paraboiled assortment of peas, beans, carrots, broccoli, red and yellow peppers and cauliflower. I added a little of lemon, white pepper and oregano to make it more sumptuous and had the same combo the entire day. The day went rather effortlessly with gym time in the evening.
Day 3       Morning weight 72.5 kg (Gracious God! another 1 Kg gone!)
Day three is a mix of fruits and vegetables. Apart from fruits and the remaining stock from day 2, I ate raw carrots, beetroot, cucumbers and lettuse leaves too. Again the day was not harsh on the tummy that otherwise solicited chocolates and pizzas! Ofcourse, two kgs lost in a matter of two days were an unmatched piece of motivation.
Day4       Morning weight 72 kg (Dissapointment followed by consolation… atleast .5 kg gone lady!)
The fourth day is the banana (upto 6) and skimmed milk (upto 1 litre) day. I prepared banana shake right in the morning with 5 bananas and 1 litre milk and kept sipping through the same the entire day.
Day 5       Morning weight 71 kg (yayyyy another 1 kg gone!)
On GM diet, Day five is a blessed kind of a day on which one can munch on soya nuggets, paneer, tomatoes, boiled rajma, soup made of capsicums, tomatoes, onion, ginger and garlic. While I preferred having boiled kidney beans with chopped onion, tomato and cucumber with lemon juice in the morning, I chose to eat brown rice with paneer and soya chunks for lunch and soup for dinner. In between meals I kept munching on raw salad.
Day 6       Morning weight 71 kg (Oops no change)
I surely was disappointed having lost no weight on day five and kept cursing myself for probably having eaten too much (while now I realise that was not true). Nevertheless, this was to be a tomato free day while all ingredients of day five could be consumed. Despite initial shock, I did not let my morale go down and ate safe meals comprising of raw fruits and veggies alsong with soup. I also had moong dal dprout salad for dinnere along with soup ofcourse hoping to see some better result the follwing day.
Day 7       Morning weight 70.5 kg (thank God for this .5 kg)
Well yes, I was feeling much lighter and brighter by day seven. I was happy to have managed to shell 4 kgs of weight which otherwise I could not do 14 months after my second delivery! The entire day was spent munching on fruits and vegetables. I had a bowl of brown rice with soup for lunch and sprouts with skimmed yoghurt for dinner.
Day 8       Morning weight 71 kg (.5 kg is back to my alarm)
I was happy that effectively I had lost 3.5 kg of weight and did feel better. And yes, immensely motivated too. With the resolution to tone my body further, I resumed my earlier exercise regime that included strength training. A lot of reading had me realize my body type that is endomorph. I inculcated a lot of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) in my cardio sessions in a routine to boost my metabolism. I prepared home-made almond butter and experimented with many more healthy recipes. I ensured I did not have more than one cheat day in a week and that my resistance training was adequately supplemented by enough protein intake which for me was in form of soya chunks, paneer and other low fat dairy products apart from peanut and almond butter. Over all, I made a change in my lifestyle. Cravings for chocolates and sweets (mithai) did not deviate me from my goals. Thankfully, fried food has never been a teaser for me. Ultimately, after 10 months of patience driven due diligence, I finally hit 62 kgs and it has been almost three years now that I have maintained so.
The road I travelled from 74.6 kgs to 62 kgs was indeed tough. There were occasions when I was (pretty much humanly) tempted to give up. I remember when I hit a plateau at 69 kgs and despite all the endurance, it would not buzz an inch further. This was the most trying time when I kept going. I did more research on what to do when we hit plateaus. To my utter surprise one of the things I realized that though I was not losing weight any further, yet I was getting into a shape that was better than ever. You know what, the weight was owing to the lean muscle that I was gaining by doing the right kind of resistance training. Then I was not-so-regular with the workout for a fortnight while travelling to another city. And whoa, guess what? Despite not exercising, during this little break my weight dropped another 3 kgs all by itself! Another round of reading and I realised that taking small breaks is actually good. And yes, I had set small targets for myself. The day I got below 70kg, I gifted myself a new pair of Asics training shoes that I had been eying for long, and when I hit under 65, it was a (well deserved) wardrobe change (pretty much required as I had gone down two sizes by then:)!
My Weight Loss Success Mantra
GM diet was absolutely not essential and I could have achieved my target otherwise too. However, I admit, for me it did work like a booster. Having lost 3.5 kgs right at the start kept me convinced that I could actually lose weight! For you, you yourself have to determine what could keep you best motivated.
Drink lots of water (preferably warm if not hot). For every 20 kgs of body weight, you need to intake 1 litre of water with a capping a 5 litres beyond which the kidneys get taxed.
Treat yourself like a human and not like a machine. While adhering to routines is a must, yet don’t be too taxing on yourself. If your body (not mood) solicits an additional break on some day, do allow it.
HIIT works wonders. In my personal experience too, a 20 minute HIIT can compensate for your otherwise 60 minutes of cardio. Aside, you keep burning calories for hours after finishing workout as it challenges the anarobic system. For me, now, cardio just means 20 minutes of HIIT apart from floor and strength training. It implies going to the maximum of your heart rate and then letting it get back to average or moderate state. Beginners can do it in ratio of 1:2 or 1:3 also depending upon their fitness level which later could be in the varying ratio of 1:1. For example 30 seconds of maximum heart rate followed by 60/90 seconds of cool down at slow/moderate pace, which later can be 30 seconds of maximum heart rate followed by 30/45 seconds of cool down.
Strength training is a must. While cardio helps us dissolve fat, resistance or strength training helps us build lean muscle and also catalyse the entire weight loss process.
Food Log. Sounds like heights of obsession but trust me it really works. There are several apps available like livestrong (www.livestrong.com) that can help you track your food, water, exercise and calories and keep you well motivated and on track.
BMI is not the only and actual indicator of fitness. There is a lot like age, child birth, muscle mass etc., that contributes to the weight you carry. As in my case too, considering just the BMI bit, I might sound kind of overweight at 62 kgs for my medium 5.3 frame but if I get on a scale that also measures other parameters, it is my muscle mass that contributes to this BMI and not body fat! So don’t let the formula of BMI depress you.
Never give up. While it sounds clichéd, there is a lot of fact in the statement. There are bound to be times when you would feel that it is too much, or too long, or too intense. But, keep yourself motivated. I would rather suggest you hang a picture of someone who you would like to seek motivation from for your fitness goal (think of the abs and toned body of a mom like Mandira Bedi at 45!)
Eat right. Make better food choices and believe me you, it works wonders. One of the mantras is not to stock the undesired items like crisps, biscuits, sweets etc. as when we are hungry we get tempted to munch on them. Instead, keep dryfruits, fruits, chopped raw veggies, seeds handy so satiate the hunger pangs. I have a sweet tooth and for me letting go of sweets (though not altogether) was a challenge. For this, I started moving to darker chocolates, sugarless tea and coffee, fruit cream with honey instead of sugar and the like. I did allow myself one cheat day in a week. And trust me, once the clothes start getting even a bit lose, your mind would not command you to eat unhealthy!
Supplementing the Workout pre and post. Irrespective of the time of the day, working out hungry, in my opinion, is never a good idea. Before a workout, eat a small snack atleast 30 minutes prior to keep yourself energized and give your best shot at the workout. Keep hydrated. And never neglect enough protein post workout in dearth of which one might lose muscle instead! Protein is an integral macro-nutrient that plays intrinsic role in repairing of damaged muscle tissue. The quantity depends upon your workout. In general, a person body needs .80 gm to 1 gm of protein per kg of body weight. I ensured to take 20-25 gm of protein in form of peanut/almond butter, quiona, soya nuggets, paneer, boiled eggs etc post my workout sessions.
Fitness Tracker. People have different views about it, but I love the idea of a fitness tracker. I use a Fitbit Blaze and I’m crazy about it. It helps keep a track of steps, heart-beat, actual calories burnt, exercise of different levels apart from other features like a watch, alarm clock and even relaxation device! There are multiple options available if one would like to consider any.
Right Bra and Shoes. While women do pay heed to workout attitre, I have felt that the right sports bra and shoes sometimes go lacking. Do invest in a couple of high-support sports bra with the right fit to ensure the boobies stay well in shape (sports bras are available in light, medium and high support. Depending upon our intensity of workout, we need to choose one). Shoes are another investment that is a must. Depending upon what sport you choose, select the pair of shoes technologically made to serve that purpose to ensure comfort and avoid any injuries (there are different types of shoes meant for trails, running, walking, training, hiking, dancing etc.).
Have an active Day. Don’t freak if you are not able to make it for a work out some day. Stay active and do whatever is possible. Activities like squats, lunges, floor, yoga etc. can be done just anywhere.
Set small milestones and appreciate yourself once you achieve these goals.
Losing weight is definitely not all about looks. Being over-weight/having excessive fat hinders health and is also responsible for many health issues. It is about a lifestyle change and not weight loss alone. My target was to take baby steps towards the goal without being less Hitler-like on my own self. Well yes, I do feel much younger, more energised and healthier today than I felt in February of 2015 when I started this journey of getting fit. The compliments I receive, do add an extra glow to my face 🙂
Happy Fitness to You!

Who said that? Teacher’s Edition
Earlier this week, I had written a post and pulled a number of comments from this blog. It was fun to look through and grab them. I never figured that I’d write this post so I didn’t formally keep track of who said what when I copy/pasted them although I think I know. I do have someone who is only happy to correct anything I do so I went back and made sure that I got things right. Where the commenter had a website or blog listed beside them, I’ve included a link back if their comment inspires you to read their blogging.
Some folks recognized their writing and responded but there was a request for the answers. So, here goes.
Looking back at 2018, I smile at some of the wonderful comments that have appeared on this blog in response to some of my posts.

2 Oh, going to have to try this one out – looks like a lot of fun! (and I will suggest it to some people I know, since I don’t have a classroom to play in right now). Thanks, as ever!

3 Thanks for including me Doug. Still fighting that bug, but class back up to 65%! Listened to the show (twioe) last night…awesome as always. Got a chuckle over Stephen’s mention of “the Good Room” and all the banter between you, as always. Keep on keeping on!

4 Love the post. It made me think about what my role is. Probably a lot more Bluesman than thought leader I guess. But really I started to think that is just important to do what I can do and let other people think about labels. I’m just a teacher with opinions and a blog. That’s good enough for me I think.

5 Hi Doug, and all:) Here is my addition – if I ever hear the word Wheelhouse again it will be too soon. Also I will probably get in trouble for this but I don’t like all the Like a Pirate business. For heaven’s sake. Pirates are real. They steal and murder people. I am working on another blog post, a more thoughtful consideration of the word “modern” – which really has an existing definition and has been co-opted more recently to mean “contemporary.” I know, I am so fussy:)

6 I like Broadway http://fontsgeek.com/fonts/Broadway-Regular, but I have a weakness for art deco fonts. It’s too decorative to read though, but good for posters and titles. For reading I usually go for arial but recently have been preferring Trebuchet https://www.myfonts.com/fonts/microsoft/trebuchet/?gclid=Cj0KCQiAiKrUBRD6ARIsADS2OLn1B3-UN6EjbTMRsPmw2xTQWIwFrCXNtyTxAmFoh7p_XYxWjXX_lzYaAlJVEALw_wcBit’s nice and clean. Oddly, if I’m going for a computer styled font I use something like Courier which is a web friendly way to imitate those old fixed width fonts https://www.myfonts.com/fonts/microsoft/courier-new/?gclid=Cj0KCQiAiKrUBRD6ARIsADS2OLnfMx1LblHmfXsmRm32zv_x9kHDMf5_ySTNErPWQ_7GmrGvY-qQCsMaApnbEALw_wcB If you’ve never messed around with fonts, you’re missing something.

7 My teaching partner and I used to do ‘a theme’, back when themes were a thing in kindergarten, around EGGS at Easter time. We did different experiments with eggs each day – how many books can we stack on a raw egg before it breaks, what happens when you soak an egg in vinegar, sinking and floating eggs, spinning eggs (raw eggs wobble, hard cooked eggs spin) and so on. We read lots of books about animals that hatch from eggs. My favourite was always “Chickens aren’t the only ones” by Ruth Heller. Like you, many of our children didn’t celebrate Easter but they were seeing eggs and bunnies everywhere in stores and on TV.

8 Thank you for capturing two days of amazing learning and connecting for us Doug. It was a pleasure to finally have some conversation time with you and I am glad Steven Hurley didn’t beam us up with his modern day transcorder. Appreciate the power that comes in building bridges in this business and you sir are a bridge builder. Looking forward to our next conversation. W

9 Our mornings begin with the fragrance of espresso filling the air. Milk is heated, the espresso is added to the hot milk and voilà, the magic potion is ready. When we go out, we seldom stop to buy coffee anywhere. We caddy thermos cups of our home brew. If we run out of the elixir…tea it is. When we have friends join us for a formal meal, we usually end the meal with a demitasse of espresso…except for the tea drinkers. We like it that espresso has a lower caffeine content than drip coffee: https://recipes.howstuffworks.com/question645.htm Of course, current science might draw different conclusions.

10 … that look of betrayal on my wife’s face when I mentioned that I am trying to quit with coffee. She, up to several years ago, hated the stuff. Hated the smell, the taste, the satisfied look on my face as relaxed through my second or third cup in the morning. I guess it was my fault. Someway somehow, she now can’t start her day without it. My attempt at scaling back my caffeine consumption has put my life is in danger. I shouldn’t have mentioned it. I shouldn’t have even written this post. If my blog goes dark for a while its because I am in hiding. Tell my wife, I was wrong … oh so wrong …

11 Hi Doug, thanks for sharing your learning from the Ontario Summit. To add to this already great resource, here is a link to all of the presenter’s resources from the weekend: https://edtech.team/OntarioResources18 – Lots more goodies there!

12 I saw this presentation at SIGCSE and left with mixed feelings. The session was pitched as ML for CS teachers with little CS knowledge. The pizza app is cool but I left thinking that there was a big missing piece which was the actual under the hood ML. It looks great as a tool where the teacher is already knowledgeable but I don’t know how much serious mileage a class will get out of it beyond being a cool demo if the teacher doesn’t already know the subject.

13 I love to sew, but hardly have the time. I go by feel when choosing fabric for any project or any “already made” clothes. I don’t care what it’s called – I only care about how it feels and how well it will wash. I do not remember the fabric you’re talking about, though I feel as if I should. My mom used to see for me, so I likely had many things made from it.

14 Morning Doug, this brought to mind attendance tracking of students and how if they are going to leave or walk out consequnces mean nothing. The reason you give them to stay is far more powerful. I think folks need to understand the purpose but more importantly if you leave the impression, regardless of this is it’s purpose that people’s whereabouts are what we are starting with and not the culture of a welcoming, inclusive and non intrusive learning environment, the same thing will happen as it does in a secondary school…they opt out as it is no longer about the them but the system they exist within.

15 Good morning Doug! (and Jamie) I’m glad you guys keep your eyes open when you’re out for your walks. There’s no doubt that keeping an eye out for other vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians (and dogs) is a critical responsibility for motor vehicle drivers. I was pleased to read your “exit, stage left“ quote, And even happier when I saw that you had included a picture of SnagglePuss. You are smarter than the average bear.

17 I noticed this too when watching cartoons with my nephews. There also seemed to be a whole lot of yelling. Okay now I’m sounding like the old guy who just wants the kids to get off his lawn. I loved the old Hanna-Barbara cartoons from the mid-60’s. Space Ghost, Frankenstein Jr. and The Impossibles, the original Scooby-Doo, Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines, The Herculoids, The Banana Splits Adventure Hour – that one was pretty weird, but I did teach some of my grade 6’s the theme song, Jonny Quest and the Jetsons. I kind of thought we’d be living like the Jetsons by now. At least I thought they would have finished repairing all the roads.

18 Hey Doug, As always your posts seem so timely. Today on my way home from church I noticed a few trees in the neighbourhood who have started to show your beautiful fall colors. I couldn’t help but recall several projects that I had to complete as a child where we would go out into the neighbourhood and find several fall leaves. We then needed to place the leaves in between two pieces of wax paper and iron them . To be honest, I don’t recall what the intended learning outcome was… But what I do remember was that it was a project that my mom and I needed to do together (hot irons and safety) . Sometimes it is those unintended outcomes (special time with a parent) which are just as meaningful as the curriculum outcomes.

What is your contingency plans in case that happens? = Wish I had one! Do you backup your online presence in case it goes away? = I print my blogs as a birthday gift to myself once a year.

The thirst day is the banana (upto 6) and skimmed milk (upto 1 litre) day.
