Been a long time coming but I was too busy with Bad Sansuary to finish this last one up. I had originally planned two more bonus chapters but I think the story ends nicely here. Besides, I'm ready to wrap up this project.
This chapter happens immediately after Chapter 30: Souls btw.
First Day & Previous Day.
Bonus 3: Respite
You let Papyrus go with Sans so they could talk with Gaster on their own. It just seemed fair to you somehow.
Instead, you turned your attention to Frisk who was still standing near the King and Queen. While you were still a bit lightheaded, you were able to stand up and walk so long as you were careful.
Frisk glanced over as soon as you approached and a bright grin immediately broke out over their face. They turned and practically went to tackle you, except you scooped them up into a fierce bear hug and embraced them.
"I'm so glad you're safe..." you whispered. Your voice trembled and you couldn't manage to hold everything together any longer. While you normally hated crying in front of strangers, you no longer cared if anyone thought badly of you.
It was finally over. Against all odds, you'd both survived. Surely, this was the best possible ending... You couldn't imagine how things could be any better at least.
Frisk loosened their hold on you and lightly patted your shoulder to get your attention. When you let go slightly and pulled back, you could see that they had been crying as well from the tear tracks running down their cheeks. They vigorously wiped their face on their sweater sleeves and smiled weakly.
"I tried so hard..." they signed slowly. "This is it now... We can't go back anymore."
Your eyes widened slightly at the realization of what they meant set it. This was permanent and there would be no more resets. Now it was your turn to get them through the days ahead and, while you were a little anxious, you were glad to put this whole difficult journey behind you.
"You did so good, Frisk. I couldn't have done any of this without you," you responded. "Thank you..."
They seemed relieved to hear that and smiled more genuinely. "I love you..." they signed.
With a slight chuckle, you ruffled their fluffy hair and pressed a quick kiss on the top of their head, much to their embarrassment. "I love you too, kiddo."
Your self awareness suddenly kicked in and you glanced up to find the three goat monsters just quietly watching you and Frisk's reunion. You swallowed nervously and out of habit pulled Frisk a bit closer again, except they resisted and pushed off your chest much to your surprise.
"This is Asriel, my best friend," they signed and motioned to the little goat monster you'd never seen before.
The goat child glanced at Toriel before approaching you apprehensively. He had similar scruffy white fur as his parents did, long floppy ears, and a pair of fangs that slightly poked out of his mouth. He also had a pair of sharp but stubby horns on the top of his head and his eyes were yellow with a red ring around the black sclera. You couldn't be sure of his age, but from his green and yellow striped sweater and black overalls, he seemed older than Frisk, maybe eight or nine?
"Um, hi... It's nice to meet you properly this time," he said. His voice was a bit gruffer than you'd initially expected and while he seemed rather shy right now, there was a bit of a teasing lilt in his tone.
"Sorry, we've met before?" Turning to Frisk, you asked, "And when did you make a best friend?"
Frisk grinned in a mischievous way before responding. "He was trapped in a flower until now. Remember Flowey?" When you nodded, they added, "Well, I gave him a small piece of my soul so he could return to his true form."
To say you were concerned was a bit of an understatement. While you still didn't know much about souls in general, even you knew that a person's soul was not something that could just be given away carelessly.
Glancing between both children, you couldn't help the slight frown that flickered across your face. "Frisk...how? Are you okay...?" You had no idea how to respond to this situation and your tongue couldn't seem to form any substantial sentences at the moment.
While Asriel couldn't maintain eye contact with you, Frisk seemed confident with their decision. They nodded vigorously and quickly tried to reassure you. "I had a lot of Determination, much more than most people do, so I gave Asriel some of it to form a soul for him. Which is why I can't do that...thing anymore. We'll be fine, okay?"
You didn't really understand what they meant but if Frisk was so sure that everything would be okay, then you would do your best to trust them. They had been responsible for freeing everyone after all, the least you could do was believe them, right?
"Alright then. While I don't fully understand all this, I'm glad you both seem to be fine." With a smile, you turned to Asriel again, "Nice to meet you then. I apologize but I had no idea you and Frisk were so close."
"It's alright..." The goat child smiled sheepishly and rubbed the fur on the back of his neck. "I'll be honest, I didn't know they thought of me that way either. They're really amazing, aren't they?"
You grinned and moved some stray hair strands out of Frisk's face. "They really are..." you murmured.
Toriel placed a furry paw on Asriel's shoulder and squeezed him in an affectionate way. "I... Or rather we, are so, so grateful to have our son back. Thank you, Frisk..."
Asgore had been very quiet after everything that had happened. If you were to guess, he seemed to be the strong and stoic type who rarely showed any emotion. Still, he had shed more than a few tears earlier when first reunited with his son, so he wasn't completely heartless at least. You still didn't like him though and that probably wouldn't change any time soon.
He knelt down in front of Frisk and bowed his head slightly, but he was still much taller than them even like this. "Thank you...Frisk, for bringing Asriel back. And thank you for breaking the barrier when we could not," he said solemnly.
Frisk smiled sweetly up at the now humbled king. They lightly patted his massive furry paw with their much smaller hand before answering. "You're welcome!"
The King turned his gaze to you, his yellow eyes still glistening with emotions, but that air of solemn duty he had been exuding earlier was back. "I want to do what is best for my people and I believe right now peace with your kind is the right thing to do. Forgive me, but would you be willing to help with the negotiations with the human government? Like an ambassador of sorts?" he asked.
Frisk nodded excitedly but you frowned and put your hand on their shoulder, which got their attention. Squaring your shoulders, you addressed the King of Monsters for the second time today.
"I am going to have to decline your offer on the basis that neither of us have any experience with politics and Frisk isn't even seven." You held up a finger before he could interject, "However, I am willing to help for the sake of all the friends I've made and to make a better world for everyone."
While he seemed a little disappointed, Asgore seemed to take your rejection pretty well. He stood up again and gave you a firm nod. "Very well... I suppose it was presumptuous of me to ask, especially after everything you've both been through."
He pressed his furry paw against his gold plated chestplate before adding, "I will make a decree that no monster is to harm a human. If there is to be true peace, we must prove to your kind that we are willing to put aside our past grievances."
"For the sake of our son and our people, I will assist in negotiating with the humans," Toriel stated. Her tone of voice had turned cold as she turned to address Asgore but there was still a spark of hope in her eyes, despite the obvious tension between them.
The King seemed momentarily taken aback and he started to say something, but stopped himself. "We should sit down and discuss how things will be going forward," he mentioned with a bit of an awkward cough.
Toriel only let out a low hum in agreement and narrowed her yellow eyes at him.
You felt incredibly awkward all of the sudden, wanting to be anywhere but next to the bitter former couple. You didn't want to just walk away, although you didn't know what or if you should say anything.
Fortunately, you were saved from making a fool of yourself when Undyne scooped both Frisk and Asriel up in each arm. The goat child let out a startled bleat and flailed his arms for a bit until he realized he wasn't going to fall. Undyne then shifted both children so they were sitting on each of her shoulders and chuckled, flashing a sharp toothed grin at you as she did so.
"I don't know how you did it, but congrats! The barrier is gone!" she exclaimed. Her grin faltered a little and in a quieter voice she added, "I wasn't so sure I'd ever get to see it for myself and if I did, never like this."
Frisk attempted to give the fish lady a hug but could only wrap their arms around her head. They ended up just leaning down and resting their upper body and head on top of hers, earning a quiet chuckle from her.
You couldn't help but smile at the adorable sight. "I don't understand it myself but I suppose it doesn't really matter. We're here and we managed to do so without much bloodshed. I'm just so happy..."
You trailed off as you felt your throat start to close up again and the familiar sting of tears at the corners of your eyes. Taking a deep breath, you managed to blink away your tears before they could flow down your cheeks. Alphys then appeared next you and placed one of her clawed hands on your arm in a reassuring manner.
"I don't know how to begin to thank either of you for being willing to support us. The chances of our plan even working were slim and if we'd failed, I know it would have cost both of you greatly," you finally said, doing your best to keep your voice even, although it was a bit difficult.
Undyne carefully set the kids back onto the ground and scratched the back of her neck. "Ah, well, of course we'd help. Friends stick by each other..." she murmured in a much quieter voice than she usually did. Her gills and cheekbones seemed to become a deeper blue and she was having a hard time actually looking at you all of the sudden.
For once, Alphys didn't seem like the more shy one of the two women and she gave you a gentle smile. "I'd been working on finding a way to break the barrier for my whole tenure as Royal Scientist. I'm just very glad it's all over and that we can finally have peace." She grew thoughtful for a moment before adding, "Even if this hadn't worked, it was worth a try I think. I'm just glad we could help you and put an end to the violence."
"Me too," you hummed.
When the skeletons eventually rejoined the group, you began to sense a sort of anticipation in the air. You felt a similar sense of excitement as it had been months since you'd seen the sun and had all but given up on seeing it again. You thought the monsters actually seemed a little hesitant though, as if they were afraid to take the first step outside in possibly a millenia or more.
Frisk tugged at your sleeve and motioned to the opening in the cave. You gave them a gentle nod and they instantly grabbed one of Asriel's paws, beginning to pull him towards the fading sunlight. That seemed to be the push the others needed and they began to follow the children to the surface. The older monsters followed at a slower pace and you noticed how solemn their expressions had become.
Papyrus glanced back at you and tilted his skull. When you realized he was waiting, you darted over and gave him a hug. He smiled and pressed a skeleton kiss against the top of your head, before wrapping an arm around you and guiding you towards the sunlight.
The sun had sunk halfway below the horizon, colouring the sky with a canvas of reds, oranges, and yellows. You took a deep breath of the crisp mountain air but instead of focusing on the sunset, you turned to see the reactions of your friends instead.
Asgore and Toriel still seemed solemn and you could see their eyes once again glistening with tears of joy. You couldn't help but wonder what the world had been like back before the war that had trapped them Underground. Hopefully, things would be better now.
Asriel had a small frown on his face and you noticed he seemed a little sad. At least Frisk was quick to comfort them but your heart went out to the poor goat child. No one deserved to be sad, let alone children, and you hoped he would be okay.
Undyne was completely silent for once but you swore you could see her good eye sparkling with unbridled excitement. There was a wide grin plastered across her face and while her body was tense, it was as if she was trying to desperately contain herself while everyone took in the view.
Alphys seemed awestruck as well and her jaw dropped which she quickly covered with her hands. The glow of the last few rays of sunshine reflected off her round glasses and you couldn't look directly at her for very long. She caught your eye and you saw her cheeks flush a bright pink, although she quickly looked up at Undyne rather than try to duck away from embarrassment.
Gaster's expression seemed rather clinical and he had propped up his chin with one hand in silent contemplation. You couldn't imagine what was going through his skull right now and you weren't about to ask either. Maybe he was thinking about the future? You would have to sit down and have a proper conversation to get to know him at some point.
Sans wore the widest grin you'd ever seen on his face. His hands were stuffed into his gray hoodie's pockets as he slowly rocked back and forth on his heels. You realized he'd noticed you staring at him when he turned his skull slightly to look at you out of the corner of his eye sockets. His crimson eyelights seemed to glitter with an almost childlike wonder and you couldn't help but smile back at him.
Papyrus' scarlet pinpricks were similarly sparkling but the expression he wore was more serious than that of his brother. He couldn't seem to tear his eye sockets away from the sky or the sunset even for a moment. His arm was still wrapped around your waist but his grip on you had slackened as he took in as much of the beautiful sight as he could.
"Sans..." he finally murmured. "Is That...?"
His brother hummed quietly in agreement. "yep, that's the sun..."
"I Never Thought I Would Actually See It..."
You slid one of your hands up his back and leaned against his chestplate in an attempt to get even closer together. "You can see the real stars too if we wait long enough," you remarked softly, although your voice was still loud enough for the others to hear.
There were quiet murmurs of agreement, although some were more enthusiastic than others, and you couldn't help but smile to yourself.
It didn't take long for the sun to finally dip below the horizon and the last of the brilliant colours to give way to twilight. By then, everyone had gotten settled into various groups on the mountainside to wait for the first star to make its presence known.
You took this moment to have a bit of a silent reflection. So much had changed over the last several months, you'd made several new friends, learned a ton about an entirely new culture, helped set a civilization free to rejoin humanity, found out you actually had magic, and now you were technically engaged with a monster. Your life had definitely taken a turn for the better and while the reintegration of Monsters into Human society likely wouldn't be easy, you were ultimately hopeful for what the future held.
At some point, Frisk made their way back to you and Papyrus trailed behind them. You smiled and made room so they could sit in the soft grass next to you. Frisk was all to happy to sit in your lap and sprawl out on top of you, which you didn't mind in the slightest. Papyrus on the other hand seemed content to just hold you close and rest his clavicle on the top of your head.
You could hear quiet gasps of surprise from the other monsters when the first stars appeared. It didn't take long for the sky to be dotted with hundreds of little twinkling lights and even you found yourself in awe at the sight. The light pollution in the city had never allowed you to see nearly this many, even on clearer nights like this one.
Frisk suddenly patted your arm to get your attention and when you glanced down at them, they grinned up at you. "Thank you for being there and always encouraging me...Mom..."
For a second, you wondered if they'd made a mistake and used the wrong sign or if you'd misinterpreted them. But no, they had tapped their thumb to their chin with an open hand and by the way their cheeks had flushed a light pink, you realized it wasn't that kind of mistake.
You didn't know what to say for several long seconds. Once you'd managed to find your voice, you gave their fluffy hair a gentle pat. "Do you see me like that, kiddo? As a parent...?" you asked quietly.
They looked surprised for a moment before slowly nodding.
"Do you want me to be?"
"Yes! I would!" they signed excitedly as a wide grin broke across their face. "I love you so much!"
You smiled and moved some stray locks of their hair out of their face. "Alright then, I'll try looking into seeing if your parents will allow me to become your guardian, okay?"
Papyrus let out a soft chuckle and pulled away from you a little bit. "I Told You So, Precious," he teased.
You huffed and gave him a bit of a playful swat. "Yeah, you did, multiple times in fact! I didn't want to promise something I couldn't make good on, okay?" You sighed and looked away from both of them before adding, "I'm not even sure if your parents will agree to this, but I'm going to try my hardest. I guess...after everything, I've come to see you as my own... I love you so much, Frisk."
Frisk wrapped their arms around your waist and buried their face in your sweater. You gave them a gentle hug back as best you could in this position.
Glancing back at Papyrus, you furrowed your brows slightly as a realization occured to you. "Are you okay with this? I know in the past you expressed that you don't like kids very much..."
He shook his skull and gave Frisk an affectionate pat on their back. "I Like Frisk And I Would Be Willing To Try Being In Their Life. Whether That Means Being An Actual Father Figure Or Just Continuing Supporting Both Of You Like I Have Already," he said.
You smiled and put your hand on top of his. This seemed like a great arrangement and you couldn't help feeling a little excited at the idea of having a family.
Things would turn out okay.

Deltarune Theories and Observations Part 2
Since it’s been like three weeks and this game still hasn’t left my god damn brain, here’s some more things that I felt like noting or theorizing.
~Parallels of Noelle and Kris~
So, I ended my last Deltarune longpost with a comparison between Kris and Susie. But, interestingly enough, Kris and Noelle also have a lot of similarities. Both of them have an older sibling figure who was a very prominent crutch in their lives (Asriel for Kris, Dess for Noelle). Yet, in present times, this elder sibling is not present (though Dess’ is a bit more permanent, whether she died or went missing.) And compared to these older siblings, Kris and Noelle are the more introverted sibling, with Kris barely having a social life until the start of the game and Noelle being the biggest pushover since a card tower. Then, there’s their parental dynamics. Asgore and Rudy are both the carefree, laidback father figures, with Asgore immediately throwing Kris in a bear hug when seeing them and Rudy encouraging Noelle to ask Susie out and playing Dragon Blazers with her. This contrasts with the more proper, if strict mother figures. While Noelle’s mother is certainly the more egregious, if the fact that Noelle would rather stand outside her home’s gates likely for hours on end than to attempt to ‘bother’ her mother during work for a house key, there are a few signs of Toriel being a little strict in some areas. Apart from some dialogue from Bratty about her kissing Asriel and anything involving the big school dance being signs that Toriel does not approve of her kids, or any of her students for that matter, getting into anything even remotely romantic, the flavor text for the closet in Kris’ Dark World room being ‘You could wear whatever you want’ suggests that Toriel imposes some sort of a dress code on Kris and likely also Asriel when he was living at home. They’re also the two characters most susceptible to the SOUL, in other words you the player. Kris’ is a bit more direct, as they are the character we control in both their movements and what they say. While Noelle, considering she has such a weak will, she is fairly mailable if we impose our will onto her, as demonstrated in the Pipis Route. Finally, they both have a strong attachment towards Susie, though whether Kris’ is romantic or not is not entirely clear as of yet. Oh, and speaking of Noelle...
~The Return of Noelle~
In at least one of the future chapters, I believe Noelle will make a come back as a party member. I don’t think Toby Fox would make it this easy to just lose whatever equipment you put on her, especially if you give her the Jevilstail or if the Pipis Route has been fully completed you will lose a component of the Twisted Sword, which will presumably be available in future chapters. Therefore, I believe that Noelle will be playable again, at least at some point.
~Misanthropic Dysmorphia~
So, many people have seen the connections that Kris has to Chara (or The Fallen Child) from Undertale. They both love chocolate, are the adopted children of Toriel and Asgore, and seem to have an affinity for knives. But if there is one more connection they have, it’s that they both seem to hate humans. Now, while don’t know the reasons as to why Chara hated humans, it was enough for them to want to slaughter an entire village of people, going overboard with the body count when only 6 souls were needed to break the barrier. While Kris likely isn’t as genocidal as Chara was, their distaste for humanity runs just as deep. However, Kris’ misanthropy manifests as a form of body dysmorphia. As a child, they wondered when their horns would grow in like their brother and parents, showing that, at least at that point Kris didn’t understand the biological differences between themself and those around them. Not only that, but in Chapter 2, when going upstairs in the library and reading the book ‘How to Care for Humans’, when looking at the pages Kris immediately closes the book when seeing the pictures of humans in seeming disgust. It wouldn’t be too much of a surprise if Kris hates the fact that they’re human, seeing as that is the big thing that makes them an outsider to Hometown. It would also explain why they seem to hate the SOUL/Player, even if you play as pacifistically as possible and don’t do anything to intentionally upset Kris like throwing away the Ball of Junk in the Light World. After all, Kris’ description in the Dark World as soon as you enter it in Chapter 1 is ‘A body containing a human SOUL’. Apart from just generally being upset that some outside force is controlling their actions, Kris is also likely pissed that a human is the one controlling them, because, assumedly, you or anyone else that plays Deltarune is going to be a human. That could be just some extra salt in the wound, that even Kris’ own soul is not only human but not even their own.
~Darkner’s History(?)~
This is something strange that I don’t think a lot of people think about. So, I notice a lot of people point out that Ralsei knows that both his Dark Fountain and the Fountain from Chapter 1 are located in a supply closet and a classroom respectively. Most people point to this as evidence that Ralsei knows something, however Ralsei isn’t the only one with knowledge of the Light World. Queen does have a line or two about knowing that her Dark World is within a library. So clearly, Darkners have at least some awareness of the Light World, or at least enough about their enclosed spaces and possibly limited to appointed rulers or some such. What isn’t so clear is how long these Dark Worlds have lasted. Sure, portals to the Dark Worlds seem like only a recent thing, there is talk about the history of these characters. Just within Chapter 1 there’s King overthrowing the other three card kings and taking the throne all to himself, Jevil meeting a mysterious figure causing him to go mad and thus needing to be locked up by Seam, a presumably long series of puzzle makers syphoned out before Roulxs became the Duke of Puzzles, and some kind of falling out between Queen and King (which also brings up the question of when and why was Queen’s laptop in the abandoned classroom). My point being, despite these Dark Worlds being open for maybe a day or two at best, there seems to be almost years worth of history to these places. It could be a case of ‘one day passes inside, but only about an hour has passed outside’ thing or it could be that Dark Worlds still technically exists even without a Dark Fountain. So far, though, I can’t offer any concrete answers to this. And actually, since I brought up his suspicious behavior once again...
~Communication Issues~
I already talked about how Ralsei is suspicious in an out-of-universe perspective here, but in universe he is acting rather suspicious. Namely, around Susie. When Kris and Susie return to Castle Town, Ralsei tells Kris to gather everything in the adjacent classroom and bring it here. Everyone becomes their Darkner counterparts and Susie is naturally excited to see everyone, especially Lancer. Ralsei then says, and only says, that ‘when the Dark Fountain was sealed, that area returned to a normal classroom. And when Lancer decides to become one of you KEY ITEMS, Ralsei doesn’t explain that Darkners become regular objects in the Light World, causing Susie to think Lancer ditched them when Kris and Susie leave to work on their group project. And during the Chapter 2 epilogue, Susie even suggests finding a way to bring Ralsei and Lancer into the Light World, despite that seeming to be an impossibility. That’s not even mentioning the post Spamton NEO dialogue where Susie is the first to bring up the oddities of the whole scenario, and Ralsei immediately chooses to shoot down any questioning. Ralsei seemingly keeps Susie out of the loop on a lot of important things about how the Dark World works. Now, Susie doesn’t really question these things, but that’s mostly because 1. she is a very ‘only cares about the here and now’ type of person and is very excited about the whole Dark World shenanigans her, Kris and Ralsei get up to, and 2. this girl is dense enough to not immediately catch on the Noelle is crushing so hard on her a neon sign saying ‘SHE LIKES YOU’ would be a more subtle message. Now, it could be that Ralsei sees Susie in a much more ‘need to know’ basis, that since she is isn’t really the group plan-maker, she doesn’t need to know the intricacies of how the Dark Worlds, the Fountains, and everything works. It also could be that the player, and by extension Kris, are more important and thus will be needed this information more than Susie. However, I still hesitate to say that Ralsei is malicious in action. What I think would be the most likely reason, if his explanation of the Roaring and Queen’s reaction to it are any indication, it looks like Ralsei’s fatal flaw is assuming his knowledge is common knowledge. After all, he assumed that Queen was opening another Dark Fountain because she wanted to destroy the world, when that couldn’t be further from the case. In all likelihood, Ralsei could be overestimating how perceptive Susie really is when it comes to putting details together.
~Only One Ending...?~
This is something a few people have been debating for a while now. Back when Chapter 1 was released in 2018, Toby Fox said that Deltarune would only have one ending. However, with the addition of Chapter 2′s Pipis Route, many of us are wondering if that was a flat out lie or not. My assumption goes one of two ways. Option A: It was true at the time. During the three year development of Chapter 2 a lot, and I mean a LOT, of things about Deltarune have changed. Initially the game was going to be another mostly solo development similar to Undertale. But, with the larger workload and Toby Fox working on other projects like developing music for the Pokemon games, and on top of all of that going through some pretty bad wrist pains, Fox decided to get a small development team for Deltarune. There were debates on whether to switch Deltarune’s game engine to something like Unity, before settling back to Game Maker. And even when Chapter 1 was released, it was more of a proof of concept than anything, with barely any of the rest of the story being written down. It wouldn’t be too much of a surprise if Toby Fox decided to add some more endings because he thought that would work better for what he was going for. Or, Option B: It will be one ending, but in the same way the Normal Ending in Undertale is ‘one ending’. See, while Deltarune likes to emphasize that ‘your choses don’t matter’ and in Undertale ‘your choses do matter’, in actuality, the choses in both games have roughly the same weight. Sure, in Undertale it seems like your choses have more of an impact, but the basic story beats of the game are all the same. You will always fall into the underground, get quasi-adopted by Toriel, go through a wacky puzzle romp with Papyrus, get hunted by Undyne through Waterfall, guest star in Mettaton’s shows with Alphys as your guide, and finally make it to New Home. And there were still some minor questions in Undertale that really had no bearing on what you answered, such as Toriel’s question of if you prefer cinnamon or butterscotch. But because Undertale frames it with ‘your choses matter’ and Deltarune frames it in ‘your choses don’t matter’ we see it as such. So, when it comes to the endings, there really are only three endings in Undertale. The True Genocide ending, where you go all the way through with killing everyone and everything in the Underground, the True Pacifist Ending, where you SPARED everything you came across and completed the necessary friendship side quests, and the Normal Ending. Now, the Normal Ending sounds like a pretty narrow term, considering there’s like at least around 10 different variations of this ending, but the basic plot beats are still the same: You finish the fight with Asgore, fight Omega Flowey, and using the power of the other six souls you (as Frisk) are able to return above ground. Most of what makes this ending different is pretty much flavor text at the very end, with Sans and which ever other characters that are alive/befriended chiming in. I feel like Deltarune’s ending could play out in a similar vein, with larger plot beats being consistent, but specific character’s reactions and what not would change up the ending slightly. And, if we are only given one ending, I feel like there would be a good reason to word it like that. Similarly to what was said some time after on Toby Fox’s twitter about the True Pacifist ending, ‘This is the best ending, nothing more’ when people were wondering if there was a way to save Asriel from his fate in the end. So, if we are told there will be only ‘one ending’ that implies that there’s going to be something we’ll want to change. And what will this change be? Well...
~Don’t Forget, I’m With You In The Dark~
I believe that the ending of Deltarune will involve sealing the Castle Town Fountain. A lot of what’s set up in Deltarune seems to be leading to this. From the suspiciousness of Ralsei, to the premonition of the world ending if too many fountains are open, to the fact that Darkners are unable to consciously interact with the Light World. I’m pretty sure that we’re going to have to say good bye to Ralsei, Lancer, Rouxls, Seam, Queen, and all the rest of the Darkners by the end. And let’s face it, this ending would be the best punch to the gut that the game could offer. But I don’t think it will be all sad. After all, the Darkners will still be with us in spirit, will still be with us in the dark.

INFODUMP ABOUT UNDERTALE TO ME RIGHT NOW :O /POS
(about Anything At All idc if its rambly bullet points or anything pls im begging u this is lichrally my special interest cmon pleaseee /lh)
OKOK I WILL!!! /pos
cant put this under the cut on mobile so here’s your warning that this will b a very long post!!
random chara hearcanons + ramblings bc CHARA MY BELOVED!!!
i might be projecting but i hc that chara has depression and ptsd! we know they hated people bc of what asriel says during the epilogue, “I know why Chara climbed the mountain. It wasn't for a very happy reason. Frisk. I'll be honest with you. Chara hated humanity.” and i think they hate humanity so much bc of some trauma other people caused. chara is angry and upset, and probably starts to hate humanity more once they learn about all of the pain humans have caused monsters. they aren’t evil or mean, they’re traumatized and hate people because they’ve been hurt so many times
i like to think that chara is so close with asriel in part bc he was one of the first people they felt like they could fully trust. asriel was with them through everything, saved them, gave them a home, etc. i think chara loved him so much in part bc asriel was there for them when everyone else had hurt them
i think chara erases the world at the end of the genocide run because of frisk’s actions in that run and not bc they themselves are cruel. chara is smart, they know that a frisk who would kill all monsters would likely be interested in destroying things alongside chara. the way i see it, chara is angry. they had to watch frisk kill their friends and family, the monsters who took them in and protected them after they had been hurt so bad by humans. chara watched them hurt asriel after he cried and begged for them not to hurt him. they watched frisk reset over and over at every save point, trying to hard to kill everyone and everything and not stopping even when they themselves are struck down. and they don’t have a body anymore so they couldn’t do anything to stop it. genocide run frisk shows what chara hates in humanity: mercilessness and cruelity for the sake of cruelity. they want to get revenge on frisk and stop them from hurting alphys and the monsters who hid and escaped. they want to stop frisk from hurting people beyond the barrier. chara constantly says “just finish the job” throughout the run because they’re exhausted and can’t stand watching frisk hurt these monsters anymore, they just want everything to end. the reason they only come out at the end is fear, in part, and the fact that watching asriel be killed despite his cries and begs was the last thing they could take. when they say “it’s me, chara!” in the mirror in toriel’s home rather than “it’s you” i like to think it’s for a similar reason that sans says “pretend to be a human” to frisk, and for the same reason that some theorize he would make fake blood at the end of the battle with him. chara wants frisk to see another person, hoping maybe they’ll find some goodness and humanity. just like some theorize that sans would use ketchup as fake blood to make frisk see that they’re hurting people like themselves as well, chara wants frisk to see that frisk is human to remind them of any good humanity they might have. they aren’t evil and they aren’t seeing themselves in frisk’s actions, they’re trying to stop frisk from hurting everyone and trying to get revenge on frisk for the pain they’ve caused. the reason why you get a photo with chara and everyone’s faces crossed out or a chara nightmare when you finish a pacifist run after a genocide run is chara reminding frisk of the pain they caused and showing them that the atrocities they committed aren’t something they can just erase and move on from. chara just wants monsters to be happy and to be ok and they hate that once again a human has taken that happiness away from monsters, but they know a reset won’t stop frisk because they will just start over, so if they erase the world and take frisk’s soul for frisk to get it back they can hope that without that soul and determination frisk can’t reset anymore and thus no more genocide run, even though that ultimately isn’t the case. chara just wants to help monsters and they’re angry at her another human for hurting them
asriel says in the epilogue that chara wanted to hurt the humans in the village when they attacked asriel and them, but once again it’s not bc chara is evil or violent, it’s bc they were traumatized by humans and and this is like a fight response to those triggers, and also bc they wanted to protect asriel!!!
chara’s plan to collect 7 human souls as talked about in the tape was for the good of monsters, not so they could hurt humans. they wanted monsters to go free and to live a normal life with their monster family. when they say “our plan had failed, hadn’t it?” in the genocide run they’re referring to their goal of freeing and saving monsters, not like, killing the people that asriel wouldn’t fight. chara wanted to save monsters and to break the barrier, they didn’t want their soul to fuse with asriel because they knew that meant their soul couldn’t be one of the 7 to free monsters. when frisk killed the monsters in the genocide route it meant that monsters weren’t free or safe, their plan with asriel to free monsters from the underground and save them from the prison humans put them in had failed because once again a human had taken everything from them
on a lighter note, pacifist run chara narrates and translates for frisk! chara and frisk likely come from the same village seeing as they’re both able to just go up the mountain and see what’s there, so they probably know the same form of sign language. frisk is mute and signs things to chara, who translates over the phone for them. they also describe everything around frisk since they’ve lived there before and know what everything is while frisk doesn’t know. when they don’t know what to say, they describe stuff! they probably aren’t sure what to make of the mettaton fight since they’ve never seen mettaton ex before, so they say “smells like mettaton”. they don’t know about the amalgamates so they say “smells like sweet lemons” during your fight with lemon bread
the mummy wrappings in the red soul coffin were for chara. asriel removed them from their coffin and carried them off to the village before those supplies could’ve been used. when he brought chara back in after they were attacked, toriel took them out to the flower bed in the ruins where they initially landed to give them a propel burial, and then chose to live in the ruins specifically to take care of chara. chara is buried under the flowers right at the start of the ruins which is why asriel refuses to leave in the epilogue and says “someone has to take care of these flowers.” it’s also in part why toriel is so sad and lonely, being in the ruins and visiting her child daily makes her remember the pain she felt losing chara and asriel and it makes her extra worried about losing frisk and the other humans. through visiting chara like this, both asriel and toriel can see them and talk to them even though they’re mostly gone
asriel and chara were the ones who left those echo flower messages about wishes. chara was the one who laughed and said “it’s just funny, that’s my wish too”
just like kris, chara also had little red horns. chara didn’t like that they were human since they hated humans, but loved monsters and wished they were one. asriel made them little paper horns to be more monster-like, and eventually toriel sewed them an pair and put it on a headband so they could stay on their head
not really a headcanon or theory, just a note. there’s lots of similarities between kris and chara: red eyes, knives, portrayed as “strange”, likes to scare other people (kris hiding under noelle’s bed and putting ketchup on their arms to scare her, and chara doing their creepy face to asriel in the tape—they likely did it before cause asriel had to have known what it was so there’s nothing saying they only do it when asked by asriel), a bit secluded and like to be alone (toriel is no longer upset with kris when she finds out they didn’t answer her calls bc they were with a friend, chara is only ever shown or talked about in relation to asriel or their parents), both kind of get rid of their soul in some way (kris removes their soul and chara like died to give their soul to the monsters), both have similar outfits (although kris looks more like frisk in their face and hair), very close to their asriel, both like monsters, both have mostly obscured eyes until the ending of the game, etc.
chara can only verbally talk to frisk, but they can talk through the phone, similar to how asriel spoke to frisk on the phone at the end of the true lab even though he didn’t have his soul back then and was still a flower, and similar to how you can understand the memory head amalgamate when you use your phone. frisk is one of the few people who can hear their voice irl
chara can verbally talk with mettaton, mew mew, and nabstablook since they were all once ghosts/are ghosts. mettaton sometimes helps chara to speak and to appear to crowds bc they can use his microphones to speak since that’s technology and chara can use his advice to show their own incorporeal form more clearly. chara and nabstablook get along very well as shy ghosts who are best friends with their family
chara and frisk become best friends in pacifist runs :3 frisk returns the the underground sometimes to talk to asriel and lets chara speak to him while they visit through their phone, and eventually chara convinces asriel to come back with them and to live with them again (yes i know this isn’t possible in canon shhhhhhh)
chara is autistic and has adhd. they also have chronic pain and use a cane as a result of their chronic pain and bc of a long lasting injury they sustained from falling into the underground, or they float as a ghost

Random Ask Dump - Anniversary Edition (50+ REALLY OLD ASKS!)
Going through OLD AND CRUSTY ASKS to try and chip away at the inbox. HERE WE GOOOO...
Tumblr media
That’s an interesting idea, and I could run it by Cake, but I think it would honestly be a LOT to track from a programming perspective. Especially ‘cause killing Sans is gonna result in a “bad ending,” so to speak.
Tumblr media
An attempt was made by Undyne to have all three hang out at the same time. Papyrus was SUPER EAGER. ...but one thing led to another and there were many messy explosions of chemicals and lots of smoke. Alphys had to step in before things got out of hand. It was all very daunting for her. Pap and Undyne are VERY LOUD, VERY AMBITIOUS PEOPLE.
Tumblr media
I actually have some ideas of some side comics I may do at some point! :o It’s just that right now there’s a lot going on.
Tumblr media
I need to poke Carni about that at some point. He’s just been very busy with other projects!
Tumblr media
Clearly he’s standing on the “out to lunch” sign.
Tumblr media
I wanna say that it’s very possible in theory. :o It probably affects them differently since monsters’ emotional state affects their magic and their physical state.
Tumblr media
I do like little easter eggs like that, though I’m not sure where I’d fit it in atm just ‘cause I already showed Pap’s room, haha.
Tumblr media
I made the chase theme for Mad Dummy as well as Mad Mew Mew’s battle theme. @pinewsun made the battle theme for Mad Dummy, and @thomasthepencil made the Season Dude battle theme and MD’s overworld theme. :o
Tumblr media
That’s a really fascinating conundrum! You’re absolutely right- if IF was a standalone game, then from a writing standpoint, having more subtle implications would make sense! The reason I chose a different approach for IF is because it’s set after Flowey’s already known to be evil and I like to give different POVs rather than stick to just Frisk’s.
Tumblr media
That’s an interesting thing, actually- both fights lean heavily on the fourth wall. Both are treated as climaxes for their given routes. It’s funny because Asriel’s fight is a lot more straightforward and less meta by comparison.
Tumblr media
I agree! The thing with Papyrus is that he’s extremely powerful- he just doesn’t want to kill. But it’s a deliberate choice not to kill- he’s able to force his attacks to do next to no damage. He’s also pretty darn crafty, as he made the Gauntlet himself. It really is just a case of Undyne’s personal biases and concern for him.
Tumblr media
That was a deliberate choice. :O Papyrus is very influential toward Frisk. He is best skeleboi.
Tumblr media
Papybot loves you, anon! He just wants to feed you WHOLESOME SPAGHETTI!!!
Tumblr media
It is possible to whistle through teeth. ...alternatively, magic. As for the music, Undertale implies that the music is heard! Maybe it’s just... a thing that exists in this world. Or it’s just meant to be a silly meta joke. I try to keep it somewhat ambiguous other than occasional nods to it. Chara’s pants are lighter because I just... felt like it, I guess? Haha. I wanted their feet and pants to stand out more from each other, so they have khaki pants. As for the Undyne fight being animated, well, this ask is old by now, but Sparks was the one who was down for it.
Tumblr media
Well, the teaser’s been out for a long time now, but that’s the idea! It’s also why this has been in production for so long. The Determinator has some really over the top attacks (that weren’t even shown in the teaser), and Sparks animated in Photoshop. That’s how hardcore he is.
Tumblr media
Shhhhh. Don’t give me ideas. I’m already slacking on Tem Village. :P
Tumblr media
Sometimes I do have slumps and burnouts (see Antipode’s lengthy hiatus), but breaks lead to me being refreshed and coming back with even more enthusiasm than before!
Tumblr media
Oh, there are a lot of these throughout the comic. For instance...
Tumblr media
Flowey appears in a few background shots in the Ruins!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Sans says “or maybe...” he looks at the empty flower pot. This was one of the earliest bits of foreshadowing about who created Flowey, and nobody noticed it at the time!
Tumblr media
The MTT vending machines initially look like this but have helpful items.
Tumblr media
And then they look like this, with an angry face and pose- Mad Dummy has possessed them!
Tumblr media
As of Part 38, it’s been revealed that he did first meet Asgore as “Santa.” As for whether or not he knows the truth, time will tell. :o
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh, these are excellent suggestions for calls! I’ll try to keep these in mind.
Tumblr media
So, I believe Glyde uses the Mysterious Door motif. Jerry uses the motif in its battle theme- I believe it’s a mix of original motif and Wrong Number song?
Tumblr media
Sans is a master of power napping. He probably gets a decent amount of sleep, though.
Tumblr media
There are a lot of ways to interpret Pap’s lack of sleep! In IF, he can get by without it, but he also has a lot of reasons to avoid sleeping. Some reasons include productivity but also due to a looooot of heavy baggage. More on that later.
Tumblr media
I think sleep can definitely make monsters healthier. Rest = better mental health as well as physical health, and with how important mental and emotional help is for monsters, that’s very important!
Tumblr media
They just really like socks. Socks are warm. Socks are slinky. And googly eyes are the best. So they took on the form of a really eccentric sock puppet and sock collector. Scandalous.
Tumblr media
It also has Alphys’ motif, as the two are the leaders of the royal guard!
Tumblr media
I would say the lack of Asgore as an influence has left Undyne slightly less grounded? Like, she had Toriel and Gerson in her life, but her relationship with Toriel is... definitely not quite as close? Like, Toriel by that point kept people at an arm’s length due to losing multiple children (including one from old age). So, while they were on friendly terms until the aftermath of the DT experiments and the tapes’ release, it was more like mutual respect and a sorta professional relationship with Undyne admiring Toriel and wanting to spare her from more heartache.
Tumblr media
That is a really interesting idea. While that didn’t happen, I do need to maybe revisit the grumpy dog at some point or another. He’s still a lil’ salty.
Tumblr media
I think in terms of layout it won’t change much, but there will be new/different content for sure. :O
Tumblr media
Mad Dummy’s base design is mostly original, but she has a wig + headband from DIO from Jojo Part 3! Fun fact: While MTT has Kamina shades, Papyrus’ goggles are loosely based on Simon from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann in terms of color. :O
Tumblr media
So basically, when Asriel defeated Frisk, he had the power over the timeline to reset it as he pleased- in theory. However, that power was overwhelming for him, and due his lack of understanding OF said power and one last ditch attempt at resisting from Chara, things went wrong.
Tumblr media
There is a track that takes some inspiration from Rage Awakened. It’s not released, and it’s not exact, but it won’t be released for a WHILE. Like until the part comes out.
Tumblr media
I think it’s just the fact that tacos are so random. Like, my biggest beef in that regard was that OG Underswap had a lot of arbitrary replacements for things in UT and not all of them made sense. Like, if Sans was to make a foreign food, ramen would’ve made more sense due to Alphys being weeb trash, haha.
Tumblr media
Okay, so the rough timeline iiiis... Falling: - Cyan - Green - Orange - Blue - Purple - Yellow Dying: - Cyan - Orange - Blue - Purple - Yellow - Green
Tumblr media
You know, it’s funny because this ask is super old, but that’s basically sorta what happened. :O It became a beach-themed resort.
Tumblr media
Never forget MTT fangirl Temmie’s pool escapades.
Tumblr media
I think Forgespring for me because I had to make the tileset myself (it took a few months, I think?), but Aquarius was definitely in the works for a while. But once I had the tileset from Fours, the rooms were very easy to design!
Tumblr media
That woulda been pretty rad! Maybe I can find another spot for it one day, haha.
Tumblr media
I think for Dohj, I’d have to check with Fours, but I’m certainly not opposed at some point? Right now, the following chars can take questions: - Frisk - Papyrus - Sans - Undyne - Alphys - Napstablook - Mettaton - Asgore - Chara - Flowey
Tumblr media
Cyan appears in Part 45! :O No answer about orange for now, tho.
Tumblr media
I do have vague ideas for Tem village. I just haven’t had time to go back and do it.
Tumblr media
Stay tuned and you may find out! :O
Tumblr media
Hmmmm... I had a lot of fun with MTT SPIRAL and the Determinator, tbh. They were both very time consuming, but I love how they came out! Also, buff Jerry.
Tumblr media
Turnabout Storm. :)
youtube
It’s a really awesome fan crossover that works way better than it should. :P
Tumblr media
None taken! We know that with headcanons, everyone is gonna have their own interpretations. These are just the voices we liked for Fireglobe Production, but everyone has their right to their favored interpretations!
Tumblr media
Yeah, Knight Knight is one of the coolest CORE mercs in the original game. It was fun to repurpose them for Inverted Fate as royal guards. :o It made room for unique encounters in the CORE in the form of them robots- as Undyne would rather use machines than other monsters to do her work.
Tumblr media
Personally, I see it as an Asriel motif, but I also acknowledge that at one point it WAS gonna be an Asgore motif. Toby has a habit of just using whatever music works for a scene (see sans. at the snail farm.)
Tumblr media
I do have a few ideas, though I won’t say for what yet. :o
Tumblr media
He’s likely made blueprints for that train. :P
Tumblr media
It probably would just have different flavor text/progression!
Tumblr media
So basically, I treat the starting motif for BAaTH/Power of NEO is just a “true hero” motif.
Tumblr media
MTT is definitely major in IF! As for whether or not he’ll have a hangout, time will tell. There’s definitely more to resolve with him, though.
Tumblr media
I’m gonna remake at least a few of the older tracks, including Regret. My goal is just to bring the OST to a similar standard of quality.
Tumblr media
So, animated parts coming up: Part 47, Part 49, Part 50. There may be some other parts, but we’re gonna wanna scale things back for a little bit for the sake of all our sanities.
Tumblr media
I go with both. ;)
Tumblr media
Honestly, probably fairly similar to the bully fight in the Ruins- which is why I ultimately decided not to do one. Both fill similar archetypes, though I think if I did do a battle, I woulda still had Flowey interrupt at the end and scare them off.
Tumblr media
It’s a very emotional scene. Far more tragic than her geno death, IMO.
Tumblr media
Well, the main goal in that regard is the remasters (Part 9 is in progress). Otherwise, I do think these hiatuses are good for working ahead. I’ve still gotta do more work, though, because my buffer this time around is a lot smaller from the trial-hiatus buffer. Alas!
Tumblr media
Honestly, the website is the best thing to happen to IF. It’s allowed us to do so much with the comic’s presentation that would be impossible with imgur. NORIX IS THE BEST...

undertale day [long post]
it’s the 15th!! happy 4th birthday undertale!!! normally i try to do a little art or something but this year i decided to do something a little different. there’s a lot of content that’s become core tenets of my experience with the fandom -- changed the way i thought about the characters, how i engage with the fandom, opened my eyes to new ways of writing -- and i thought it’d be neat to compile some of those into one post to share with other people. so without further ado!!!
40-minute Deltarune Piano Medley - FaceImplosion [MUSIC]
ok, i know this is deltarune and not undertale, but this medley incorporates songs from both games so i’m gonna say it counts. and honestly, i could say a LOT about this piece!! i’ve watched and listened to a lot of ut/dr medleys, and this has to be the most lovingly crafted of its type that i’ve ever seen. Ever. a lot of care has been put into the order and combination of the songs (some funny, some sad, some mindblowing, ALL amazing) and the art is so good that every time i listen i find myself watching along. there’s a lot of easter eggs, especially for the attentive listener/watcher, and this medley deserves far more than the 6k views it’s gotten so far.
Undertale Album Project - Various Artists [MUSIC]
Songs From Mt Ebott is a collaborative album project that contains dozens of tracks from a score of different artists. i have a lot of favorite tracks from this album, not to mention the individual track art created for each, and if you’ve never heard of this project before, i really recommend giving it a listen! (FaceImplosion also did a piano track for this album, by the way, which i’m linking separately because it’s one of my aforementioned favorites.)
Chara - tigerblossom [MUSIC]
im not gonna lie. this was my favorite piece of fan music for a long time. it’s a medley mashing a few different songs together, short and sweet, but it comes together in such an incredibly heartfelt way at the end that whenever i end up listening to it i find myself wishing the track was about five minutes longer. they also have an underfell version of your best friend that i recommend giving a listen!
Photographs - FuriousPoplar [FIC]
in terms of “post-paci everyone lives au”s, there’s been a lot of ground covered by a lot of different people, and after a while the concept feels almost a bit...same-y? but this fic covers a sorely-needed conversation between an alive chara and asriel in a way that i’ve never seen approached by anyone else before. it’s cathartic, it’s extremely well written, and it doesn’t shy away from the ugly sides of trauma and recovery, which is so greatly appreciated. it also hit me...REALLY hard, which i think is a testament to how amazing this piece is.
Turn Back - foxsgloves [FIC]
i read this one pretty early on in my time in this fandom, and it’s continued to influence me long after. the premise: frisk keeps loading over the brief time asriel has his body in the epilogue, and simply spends time with him as they both prepare to move on towards the end. it’s sad. it’s cute. it’s amazing. it’s something i go back to reread sometimes late at night when i want to reread something friendly and familiar and a little sad. and its been one of my favorites ever since i read it.
You Wear Your Grief Like a Badge - Draikinator [FIC SERIES]
how do you even TALK about ywyglb? do i talk about nate’s impeccable voice in their writing? how true to character they are with the kids? how they set the scene of a post-pacifist world still shaking with the echoes of the past? the series starts with flowey taking frisk’s soul captive while chara and sans form an uneasy alliance in order to get them back, and then spirals into a tense, sweet, funny, awful, heartbreaking experience that reshaped how i viewed the boundaries of my own writing. draikinator’s writing has been and continues to be a huge inspiration to me, and i heartily recommend giving any of their stuff a try.
A Numbered List of Things That Aren't as Badass as They Sound (ex. Monsters, Suicide, Burning in Hell) - rosyy [FIC]
a brief glimpse into chara and asriel just before It Happens, While It Happens, When It Happens. the prose here is the sort of flowery delirious feverdream you’d expect from a kid dying of buttercup poisoning, and i love it to bits. i also want to mention a dr who crossover by the same author, because it has kris as the doctor and frisk as the stray they adopt, and its also the perfect antidote to the angst the first fic provides.
Risen Up (or, Of Fallen Children and Mountain Kin) - paradoxpangolin [FIC]
oh jeezums, how do i even start with this one? post-paci, frisk comes to the conclusion that the best way to ease the tensions between human and monsterkind is to put on a musical about their time in the underground!!!!.....except this leads to its own host of complications, and things get a bit Messy. this fic hasn’t updated in a bit, but it contains so much in its 140k of already published writing that i feel the need to urge you to read it anyway. i’m really partial to autistic frisks, and this fic has what’s got to be my favorite portrayal of that in ... probably the entire fandom? honestly, most (if not all) of the characters in this fic are autist, and it’s just. very good. i love.
you’re like a mirror, reflecting me - batterytriplicate [FIC]
a daemon au exploring what frisk and chara’s journeys might have been like with the extra distinction between monster dust and daemon dust. i completely forgot about this fic until i was trawling through my ao3 history for this post, and i’m really really glad i found it again. i think i was in the middle of trying to figure out this exact au when i first found this fic, and it did everything i was thinking of (and more) so much better that i felt more than content leaving it at that. so if you like his dark materials and want to see a fantastic little daemon au, give this a shot!
soulless-pacifist - vsemily [ASK BLOG]
soulless-pacifist..... if you’ve never heard of this askblog, you’re in for a treat. i wasn’t with it from the very beginning, but i started reading towards the  middle of its main story arc and stuck with it to the end, and suffice it to say, it has to be my favorite fandom askblog to date, purely for how well its written, how well its drawn, and how it’s one of the....only askblogs i’ve ever seen come not only to a FULL conclusion, but to a satisfying one! the mun also worked with a programmer to create a fangame for its final arc, which is so above and beyond that im still kind of in disbelief. in short: this askblog followed frisk and their passenger after the events of a soulless pacifist route, and continues on with them as they grow together and find their place with a whole host of twist and turns in store.                also, memes.
Shine your light with me, chase all the dark away - FancifulRivers [FIC]
this au follows frisk and chara after the events of the game. unlike most post-paci runs, though, chara has their own body back, while they and frisk are hiding back in mt ebott after the monsters have left to avoid the complications of being runaways and also.... incredible guilt and trauma. things don’t really work out like that, though, and i really recommend this read. fancifulrivers has also been an incredibly prolific writer who’s uploaded a lot of really good ut fics, so this is a great starting point to jump off of for their other stuff!
repercussions - proximally [FIC]
this fic... i think this one fic is the one that’s impacted me the most during my early days of this fandom. it’s short, and sad, and is a twist on the soulless pacifist ending that i was left thinking about literally for months after i first read it. instead of saying any more and risking spoiling it, i’ll just leave the author’s desc:  “You made a mistake, and you pay for it with your life. “
The Great Boondoggle - Masu_Trout [FIC]
the premise of this fic is pretty simple. post paci, frisk is walking home. they come across a Bad Guy. hijinks ensue. but what sets apart this fic from others for me is the way frisk is written here. when this fic was published in early 2016, most frisks i came across were the...sweet harmless woobies that were pretty typical from the fandom. this is one of the first frisks i came across that was kind of mean, and a little cold, and had very obviously had a long upward climb to being the sort of person who chose mercy instead of fight. this portrayal is a lot more common nowadays, which i’m super grateful for, but since this is one of the first fics i came across that really nailed this portrayal, i felt i should leave this here. i also recommend their pokemon/ut au, which is toriel and frisk centric and i also love to bits.
and....well, i was gonna say “that’s it”, but i honestly had to cut quite a few things from this list to keep it from stretching the dash too much. there’s been a lot of incredible content created by this fandom over the years, and this is by no means a comprehensive list of my favorites. but these are some of the ones that impacted me in a really special way, and if you were kind enough to check them out and maybe even liked them, please consider leaving a kind comment for the creator! if you’re the author of one of these pieces reading this right now: thank you so much! im looking forward to finding even more favorites in this year and the next.

Title: The Sun Still Waits Here (With the Moon and Stars Beside It) (5/?)
Author: LittleTayy
Rating: Mature
Characters: Marisa Coulter, Lord Asriel, Lyra Belacqua, Ma Costa
Summary: Marisa and Lord Asriel certainly try their best. They love their daughter. But Lyra Belacqua is undoubtedly her parents’ child.
( Snippets of an AU story, set in our modern world. )
AN: This is based off the TV Show.
This chapter does involve a child death. If this triggers or offends you, this may not be the chapter for you. Please read on carefully.
Read On: AO3
Chapter Four
for all the stars in the world, yours sadly burnt out first
.
Lyra is nearly seven and simply thinks her mother is getting fat, like the cook down in their kitchen or the administration lady at her school. She would never actually say that to her mother though; her mother is always scolding her about being rude . So, she is surprised when her mother pulls her close to cuddle her in bed, a hand resting on the slightly pudgy swell of her belly.
“Lyra,” her Mother starts, turning to look her in the eye, her free hand playing with Lyra’s still long strands. “Do you know what pregnant means?” she continues and there’s a hesitant, hopeful look in her eye.
Lyra shakes her head, no. Because she doesn’t. She frowns, eyes dropping from her mother’s face down to the hand she’s rubbing along her belly. She has a feeling it might be something to do with Mother getting fat. She’s not sure she wants to know.
Marisa chuckles lightly, watching her young daughter for a moment. She wished Lyra was a little bit older, she was at an awkward age to explain this to. Especially when Marisa knew this would no doubt set off questions about where babies came from and Marisa certainly didn’t want to have those conversations with Lyra just yet.
But Lyra was going to be a big sister and though her child could be a brat, she had a feeling her daughter would take to the role.
“Well, pregnant means that I’m going to have a baby,” Marisa told her, once Lyra’s eyes had moved back up to look at hers and not her stomach. “You’re going to be a big sister, Lyra. Isn’t that exciting?” Marisa continued, trying to coax out the excited response from her daughter that she was finding it hard to muster for herself.
Lyra’s brows furrowed and her face scrunched in confusion at her Mother’s words. “Where you goin’ to get a baby ?” She asked, head tilting up to look at her mother curiously.
“Oh, darling,” Marisa laughs, taking one of Lyra’s little hands and guiding it towards her growing stomach. “The baby is growing inside of me. See? Soon they’ll get bigger and bigger and start moving around. You were a very wiggly baby,” Marisa told her, still smiling widely.
Her daughter’s eyes go wide and her mouth drops open, face aghast at her words. “Was I inside ya?”
“Of course,” Marisa soothes. “Mother’s grow their babies inside them, to keep them safe until they’re born,” she tells her, pulling her into a hug.
She rubs her back and presses kisses to her forehead, asking her if she has anymore questions and if she wants to sleep in Mother’s bed for the night. Lyra says yes, she’s never thought about where baby’s come from before and if she came from her Mother, then sharing her bed seemed only natural. Besides that, Mother and Father’s bed was big and comfortable and had such soft pillows and blankets; Lyra always liked it better when she got to share a bed with Mother.
The weeks go by and Mother’s stomach grows and Father is home more and Lyra still isn’t sure how she feels about it all. Her father pays much more attention to her mother now, especially when she is feeling sick. Some nights she tries to snuggle her way into her parent’s bed, between them but Father always sends her firmly off to bed in her own room and it makes her so angry she wishes he would just go away on one of his trips.
She is sulky and agitated except when it’s just her and Mother.
Marisa, however, seems to enjoy Asriel doting on her while she’s pregnant. Her feelings, when she’d first found out she was pregnant were conflicted. She’d been making strides in her work and she’d worried that her pregnant state would undermine her authority and her respect. It was Asriel that had comforted her and reminded her that she was brilliant, that pregnant or not, she was essentially the boss and that it was her initial work that her subordinates were working on.
The stroking to her ego did wonders. Asriel knew her, inside and out and having him around for this pregnancy was something Marisa found herself enjoying. She’d realised that this was what they’d both missed out on while she’d been pregnant with Lyra and was surprised by how happy she was that they were both getting the chance to be there, a second time around.
Marisa worried though, that Lyra wouldn’t take to her sibling.
“Lyra, darling, come here a moment,” Marisa calls, as she see’s her daughter darting about outside, playing with the stray cat they can’t seem to get rid of. Asriel has no mind to rid the property of the stray, despite Marisa’s continued assertions that it could be diseased and that it could pass something onto Lyra. She knows it’s a reach but really, it wasn’t like she was asking for a lot. She had half a mind to just kill it herself and get rid of it.
“I’m playing!” Lyra whines, through the open patio doors as Marisa watches her on the well looked after lawn. The young girl isn’t even looking at Marisa, too occupied playing with that stupid cat.
“Lyra, now ,” Marisa asserts. She doesn’t want to have a fight. She’d been planning a nice activity for the day, if only Lyra would just listen .
Her seven year old huffs and turns to her as if she is a teenager and not still a child. Scarily, Marisa can see a young version of herself in the girl and she isn’t sure whether to be horrified or proud. She settles a little on both as she watches her daughter come closer; she’d much rather her not be as reckless as her father. If that meant being a little more like her, then Marisa didn’t see a problem with that.
“Yes?” Lyra replies, arms crossing and eyes boring up into her Mother’s. Marisa is silently grateful that Asriel isn’t around to see this, for Lyra’s attitude is all Marisa and she knows he would not stop his endless teasing if he saw.
Still, Lyra is the child and she is her Mother. This attitude would not do, but Marisa takes a deep breath, a hand closing into a tight fist and then releasing. Lyra is seven , there is no point in starting a whole ordeal over a little bit of attitude. So instead, she curbs her natural instinct and smiles down at her daughter.
“How would you like to come see the baby with me today?” Marisa asks, tone light as she makes the suggestion to her daughter. She can see the confusion on her child’s face.
“See the baby?” Lyra echoes, suddenly supremely curious, her young eyes flicking down to her mother’s round belly and back up to her eyes again.
“Mhm. You and I can go to the doctors and they can show us the baby on a machine. We can even find out if you’ll have a baby brother or sister,” Marisa enticed, words lilting and pleasant as she spoke.
“They can do that?” Lyra asks in wonder, eyes wide as she gazes up at her mother. Marisa grins, nodding her head and ushering the child into the house.
“Yes, they can. Science and medicine can do...glorious things,” Marisa tells her as she directs her towards the bathroom. Lyra doesn’t even have to ask why, she knows her mother wants her to wash her hands after playing with that cat. She does so quickly, even though she’s still bubbling over with curiosity instead.
Marisa is thinking, of course, not of the wonders of modern medicine but of her scientific research that is on the pinnacle of being fully realised and of the project she is developing. Growing a child is wondrous but what she’s trying to do, what she’s creating with her work, is going to be spectacular.
Marisa had dressed Lyra in a sweet little pinafore dress and tights, hair done in a simple ponytail for their day out together. She’d tried to wrap a ribbon around Lyra’s hair but her daughter had refused and Marisa relented, though she couldn’t help pouting a little, as childish as she knew it was. The ribbon would’ve tied the whole little outfit together cutely but she was starting to realise that Lyra was very much a young girl that was her own person.
It wasn’t something Marisa liked to contemplate really, the fact that her child was no longer young and pliable anymore. She’d often wondered, in the quiet of the night, if that was why she’d let herself fall pregnant again. For years she’d been against another child but she couldn’t help feeling Lyra’s growing independence had in some way played a part in her lax use of contraception. She’d spent the last five years successfully avoiding pregnancy scares.
Had she secretly wanted another child? She didn’t think so. But here she was, almost six months pregnant after swearing that she’d only have one child.
The thought had grown, just as the baby had. It was a little unsettling to think she had done this to herself, instead of it being the accident she told herself it was. Another baby would grow, just as Lyra had and she knew that she couldn’t keep having children when the other’s started being their own little people. Two would have to be it for them and as she and Lyra strode into the obstetricians office, she wondered if she could convince Asriel to get a vasectomy.
Glancing down at Lyra as they sat in the waiting room, she couldn’t help but notice the girl looked equal parts curious and afraid. Suddenly, Marisa had the thought that maybe this hadn’t been a great way to spend a day with Lyra but it was far too late to do anything about it now.
“Is everyone here gonna have a baby?” Lyra whispered, her mouth right next to Marisa’s ear as she kneeled on her chair, hands around her arm.
Marisa wished she’d thought to bring along the iPad, something to distract her child. Though that didn’t usually last in keeping Lyra entertained for long, it would’ve done for the moment. The baby was kicking and she needed to use the bathroom; it was one of the things she hated so passionately about these appointments.
“Most of them, yes,” Marisa replied, after taking a breath, trying to calm herself. Her uncomfortableness didn’t mean she should snap at her daughter. In fact, she should be happy her child was so curious. “This is a special doctors for people that are going to have babies,” she continued, smiling tiredly at her child.
Lyra rested back on her heels, face screwed up as she glanced around the waiting room. “They ain’t all look like they havin’ babies,” she stated plainly, glancing back up at Marisa as if she wasn’t telling the truth.
Thankfully, Marisa was saved from having to form a reply by the nurse calling out her name. She stood gracefully, which was a feat considering the child she was growing and took Lyra’s hand, smiling sweetly as the nurse as they followed her. As they entered the empty examine room, she directed Lyra to sit and to not distract the doctor or nurse as she sat up on the exam table. She was glad she’d opted for the ensemble she had that morning as she pulled the blouse out from the skirt she was wearing, knowing it’d be easy to arrange again once they were done.
Her doctor came in then and they chatted amicably for several moments, though Marisa wished the woman would just get on with it. Lyra spoke politely as Marisa introduced her and she was supremely pleased by the manners her daughter exhibited. Which wasn’t always the case when it came to Lyra.
The gel was cool on her swollen stomach but Marisa didn’t flinch. She’d learnt long ago never to let it show when things got to her and now it was simply an ingrained reaction. She relaxed back, turning her head to look at Lyra, lips twisting upwards at the curious expression on her child’s face.
She could feel the transducer on her stomach and then looked back towards the doctor and the screen. Her doctor spoke, assuring her everything looked good and the baby was progressing as she took notes and measurements. Then she turned, smiling at Marisa and then glancing towards Lyra.
“Would you like to know the sex of the baby?” The doctor asked, moving the transducer wand across her stomach to find the right position.
“Yes,” Marisa replied clearly, nodding. She extended a hand out to Lyra then, who was starting to fidget, and beckoned her forward. “Lyra. The Doctors going to tell us if the baby is a boy or a girl now. Come look.”
At her mother’s words, Lyra looked a little more interested, bolting up off her seat and coming to stand by her mother. She pressed against the exam table, watching her mother and the doctor and the screen. “I can’t see it?” Lyra asked, head tilted and brows furrowed in confusion.
The doctor chuckled then and Marisa frowned. She didn’t like her laughing at her child.
“On the screen, darling. This,” she gestured to the wand as it pressed against her stomach, “can see inside my stomach. There’s the baby,” Marisa explained, leaning forward a little as she used a hand to point towards the screen, fingers outlining the shape of the baby.
Lyra’s face was staring intently then at the screen, pressing against Marisa as she tried to get a better look. “Cool,” she whispered softly. She turned to look at her mother, then towards the doctor, as if waiting for the doctor to start talking.
The doctor for her part, had to smile, seeing the same expression on both mother and daughter’s faces. It was unsettling in a way and she quickly turned back to the screen, moving the transducer a little to get a better look.
“Well, by all accounts, you’ll be having another little girl. You’ll have a baby sister,” the doctor told them, directing her last words towards Lyra, smiling brightly at the pair.
“Another girl?” Marisa breathed, eyes wide. She’d expected a boy, she’d had a feeling since she’d found out she was pregnant that the baby would be a boy. The thought had never even crossed her mind that she would have another daughter.
“Yes. Would you like some photos?”
Marisa nodded, still a little stunned. “Please. Thank you,” Marisa replied, taking the wipe the doctor handed to her and cleaning the gel off of her round stomach.
She sat up, pulling her blouse back down over her stomach and shifting so her legs rested over the edge of the bed. Lyra stood, fidgeting against the bed watching with interest as the doctor turned away and began printing out copies of the photos. Marisa stood, smiling down at Lyra as she reached over to pick up her hand bag, her other hand smoothing over Lyra’s head and hair as they stood and waited.
It was only another moment as Lyra rocked eagerly against her mother, before the doctor turned with the photos in hand. She popped them into an envelope and scrawled a name and date across the front. The doctor handed them over then and Marisa thanked her before turning, taking Lyra’s hand and leading her out of the room.
Lyra bounded along beside her mother, wanting to look at the photos to see if she could pick out her baby sister. But Marisa had already put them in her hand bag. Lyra wanted to ask about her baby sister but she wasn’t quite sure what, luckily Marisa started to speak as they left the doctors office.
“Are you hungry Lyra? Shall we go to lunch and then go shopping?” Marisa asked, looking eagerly down at her daughter.
“Yes, please,” Lyra breathed enthusiastically, nodding eagerly as she followed her mother. They were in London, a place Lyra had only been once and she barely remembered that last time. Her mother hailed a cab and ushered Lyra into it first before stepping behind her, giving the driver the name of a restaurant only.
Marisa watched as Lyra looked out the window, seeming enthralled and intrigued by all the sights. She wondered if they should bring Lyra to London more, get her out of the country and around new things. She had a feeling Lyra would like London. A hand rubbed over her growing stomach and Marisa decided that once the baby was born and a few months old, that they should spend the weekend here in London as a family.
In fact, once the baby was a few years old, Marisa couldn’t help but imagine that she and Asriel could take them on a trip abroad somewhere. Most probably Europe, nowhere too far away considering their youngest daughter would most likely still be a toddler. They had never taken Lyra on any trips like that and she realises now that, that was probably a mistake.
She’d bring it up with Asriel once they got home. She doubted he’d be happy by any mention of a vacation, even if it was a moment for the future but she was sure she could persuade him.
The cab pulled up outside the restaurant and Marisa paid the fair with a sweet smile, stepping out of the cab and pulling Lyra along with her. Lunch was fancy but not too fancy that it was unfortunate to eat there with a child; it wasn’t a place Marisa had gone often but she knew it was child friendly at least. Afterwards, she and Lyra strolled down Bond and Oxford Streets and through Covent Gardens and into Harrods.
They didn’t buy much for themselves, surprisingly. Though Marisa insisted on some new clothes for Lyra. Eventually they’d ended up in a boutique baby clothes store and Lyra’s excitement at the little baby dresses and pink booties had overwhelmed her. By the time they’d gotten back to their countryside estate, they’d each had several bags on their hands and Asriel had beaten them home.
It had been a wonderful bonding day for the both of them and Marisa realised she was as excited for the new baby as Lyra was.
Lyra hears the scream, the cry coming from the room her mother was giving birth in, as a nurse enters the room. Her brows furrow and she glances up at Mrs. Costa, whose face looks worried in a way that it hadn’t been in the whole time they’d been there. Father is away at Oxford, once again and it’s just been Lyra and her mother and Lyra doesn’t know how, but she knows something is wrong. Mrs. Costa reaches to pull her close but Lyra is fast and darts into the room quickly, stopping short just in front of the door at the scene she is bearing witness to.
There is blood and there is her mother, crying unrestrainedly in anguish. Is mother hurt? Is she dying? Lyra’s breath speeds up, her heart pounding; her eyes sweep the room and land on a woman hovering over a silent, blue baby.
Her mother is still crying, still hysterical, though Lyra can just make out the garbled, choked sobs. “No...no! She can’t be! Make her breathe...don’t stop! You let my child die! ”
And it’s then, that Lyra realises her baby sister is dead.
She doesn’t know what takes her over but quicker than lightening, she’s by the table her dead sister is placed upon, staring at the still, silent baby. She thinks, maybe if she begs, if she can get the nurse to make her baby sister okay, her mother will stop crying.
“Fix her! You’re a doctor, ain’t ya?” She begs the nurse, who looks stunned and unsure how to deal with the young girl whose mother is howling in pain at the loss of her child.
The nurse shakes her head. “I’m sorry, sweetheart…”
Lyra hits out at her then, pushing at her and yelling and forgetting herself until she feels a pair of familiar arms wrapping around her waist and lifting her up and away. She fights the hold, tears streaming down her face until she realises it’s Mrs. Costa holding her. They’re out of the room now but Lyra can still hear her mother crying out in her mind and wraps her arms and legs around Mrs. Costa in a tight hold as they sink down onto the seats outside the room.
She doesn’t quite understand why she’s crying but Mrs. Costa is holding her tightly, whispering to her and stroking her hair just like her mother does and it’s so comforting Lyra relaxes into the touch. She’s barely crying, though her cheeks are still wet and eyes still red rimmed, when she hears her father running down the hallway of the hospital, asking Mrs. Costa what happened. Lyra turns, glad to see her father, in such an emotional and traumatic time but he simply brushes off her hands, barely looking at her as he strides into the room.
Lyra cuddles into Mrs. Costa, still on her lap and arms wrapped tightly around her when her father eventually steps out of the room, in what feels like hours later. Lyra can’t hear her mother crying anymore and she worries for a moment, breath caught in her throat if she’s dead too. But, as she looks up at her father, he looks tired and sad; if Mother had died, he’d be tearing the place apart in anger.
“She shouldn’t have been here. Take her home,” Father snaps, after a long moment, his eyes finally focusing on his young daughter.
She whines a little, in Mrs. Costa’s hold but the hard look she receives from her father is enough to quiet her. Instead, she let’s Mrs. Costa lead her tired little body down the hallway and out of the hospital. They are quiet as they arrive home to the Manor and Mrs. Costa puts her to bed.
She clings to her blonde Nanny’s hand, looking up at her with pleading eyes. “Can you stay Mrs. Costa? Please?” she whispers quietly, lips trembling.
“Of course, Lyra. Of course,” Mrs. Costa replies, settling down beside Lyra and holding her tight.
It is two days before Marisa leaves the hospital. Asriel had not allowed Lyra to visit her mother in that time and now Lyra was a mess of nervous energy and unsure how to greet her mother. Asriel had explained, in his brief way, what had happened and that her baby sister hadn’t survived.
The explanation left Lyra unsatisfied and so instead, she asked Mrs. Costa. Her Nanny looked uncomfortable at the question but she explained much better then her father had. Mrs. Costa told her that she should be sweet and gentle with her mother, that her mother would be very sad that they would not have her baby sister around. She explained that losing a child could be utterly heartbreaking, even if the child was only a baby. She said that mother would still love her very much.
Lyra had nodded intently at the words and determined she would be good for her mother. She hugged her tightly and had hot chocolate with her in her bed, keeping her mother company as she recovered.
The first funeral Lyra ever attended was that of her baby sisters. It was held a week after her mother arrived home. It was a small, quiet affair; just Marisa, Asriel and Lyra and a priest reading a blessing as the baby was buried in the family cemetery on the west side of the Estate.
Lyra watched as her mother tried not to cry in her pretty black dress and as her father clutched her mother’s hand tightly, as if attempting to keep her from floating away. Lyra held her mother’s other hand until her father thanked the priest and all three adults turned away, heading back towards the Manor. Lyra watched them for a moment, moving away from the freshly made grave before turning back to it, eyes trained on the gravestone.
She stepped closer, tracing the name of her dead sister with a finger, before pressing a kiss to the gravestone.
Madisyn Celeste Belacqua
She’d been the one to pick her baby sisters name.

Ali: tl;dr: Somebody draw it for me, and since it was kinda my OC, I decided to use it.
And now the full story - that I told here like 3-4 times so far prompted by asks, so sorry to those who remember it. But this is really full story now. A FULL STORY. ALL THE DETAILS, ALL THE LOGO’S LORE. INCLUDING INFO YOU DON’T NEED AT ALL. BRACE YOURSELF.
Some years ago there was this fan project going on called Overtale, which was supposed to be sequel of Undertale following the plot of monster and humans living together on the surface. Since then the project got cancelled due to various issues and all that’s left of it is amazing music (seriously, listen to it, it’s great), some voice acting sneak peeks with very snarky Asriel and full 3D alpha-demo somewhere.
But when the project was still going on I really fallen in love with it and since I was also deeply in love with Papyrus - and still Am - I started a bit obnoxiously roleplaying him on the game project page in comments. Soon that helped me made friends with other fans of the project and then we gathered in this little group on Skype (oh, those times before Discord existed) with plans to make some kind of a video gift for the developers. And then developers themselves noticed us, and since the game was going to be in open world, we got an opportunity to create a little side town filled with characters made by us and with a short side plot line for a player to complete.
And that let to creation of Ali, red haired, green eyed cat monster, who was  troubled with extreme case of double personality. She was supposed to be one of the shopkeepers in the town. But the town itself was in the midst of a conflict. Split in half, one side supporting beliefs of Sans-like scientist human and other side supporting beliefs of spirtual and kind dog monster. The problem was that Ali loved everybody and wanted to be friends with everybody. She just could not pick one side, it was too hard for her. She ended up developing a second personality, who she claimed was her sister named Ila. And then Ali supported one side of the conflict and Ila the other one. When you would interact with her in the shop, she would try to trick you, ducking under the counter and slightly changing outfits, trying to convince you that one time you talk with her and the other time with her sister, but it was all quite easy to look through.
I even did some digging around now and found old files with dialogue ideas, I think they fit the humour of Undertale quite well, why not share some of them (the stuff in brackets are comments in the shop’s window or random notes made when this was wrote):
1. (conversation)
(talk)
Ali: “Alright, what would you like to know?”
Ila: “Oh, meme-ingful conversation's your thing, huh?” heavy emphasis on the pun
2. (on sister)
Ali: “My sister thinks she's hilarious. I think she's nuts.”
Ila: “My sister thinks I'm nuts. Isn't that hilarious?”
3.  (random) “There's a good reason you never see monsters with guns. A really good reason. Maybe humans use them to kill things, and some humans don't like killing things, and that's why they don't use guns, but our reason is way better, and way more important than that. Gunpowder smells weird.”
4.  (on FKDK versus UFOP - town’s groups conflict) “People have been shouting at each other in the street a lot, lately. I'm pretty sure it's a new sport someone came up with.”
5.  (on Tree of Threes) “Some say that one of the trees just outside town is actually a were-man! It used to be a normal tree, but then one day a human bit it, and now it transforms into a man under the full moon.”
6.  (on Zwelf) “Zwelf once accidentally ingested a plastic donut while absentmindedly working out a problem. I didn't believe it at first. It was a lot to swallow.”
7.  "[talk][new] “Sir Mallow of Marsh... Bit of a mouthful, if you ask me. Why doesn't he just call himself Sir Marshmallow?”
8. (organisations)
Ali: “I support the FDKD, of course. That's the (I forgot the acronym ). They (I don't know the answer to this question ). I suppose you wanna hear about the UFOP too? My sister knows more, I'll go get her.” exits to back room to change to Ila
Ila: “Oh, the UFOP! That's the United Federation of Puns! It's so much pun being a member, we hang out and tell jokes all day, it's great! (idk wtf the UFOP goals are, she woud mention this now). Ugh. There's also the FDKD, but they're lame. No sense of humor whatsoever! Like my sister. Hang on, I'll get her for you, she can tell you more.” exits to back room to change to Ali
So yea, I have much more of those, but that’s probably enough and that was the kind of person Ali was supposed to be!
But then the project got sadly canceled due to personal reasons of the developers. I became quite fond of Ali though. There was more to the whole town idea, eventually it was dropped, then we were supposed to just made OC characters wandering the game world, so Ali changed into wandering merchant you could meet on the road.
And then, since I had a very detailed desctription of how she was supposed to look like:
“Ali/Ila Appearance: Monster. Short-haired bipedal feline, the base colour of the coat being a concrete grey(#95A5A6), with patches of near-white(#ECF0F1), silver(#BDC3C7) and dark grey(#7F8C8D) which have defined edges, mimicking a tabby-blotchy khaki pattern. The face is intersected by a stripe of silver grey(#BDC3C7), running diagonally from just above the right-eye brow ridge, to the edge of the jaw just below the left side of the mouth. She has a narrow face and jaw; a longer muzzle with her pointed eye-teeth showing whenever she smiles; short ears sticking up through her hair; slitted emerald-green eyes(#00FF33) which are an average depth; and a windswept-styled pixie haircut about 5 inches long, dyed pomegranate red (#C0392B). Ali's body is slightly large, with some muscle present but not obvious. Ali wears a close-fitting scarlet(#FB0012) tee-shirt with a high v-neckline and short sleeves about ¼ the length from shoulder to elbow which has a skeleton's skull printed on it to symbolise her admiration for Papyrus, with a sleeveless green-and-brown khaki vest which is unzipped over the top, plain mid-blue jeans, red(#FB0012) canvas tennis shoes with white laces, and a FDKD pin displayed prominently on her vest. When changing to Ila she swaps her khaki vest for a blue hoodie, zipped up to hide the skull-printed shirt, but with a small skull pendant attached to the zipper tag to demonstrate her admiration for Sans. She also wears a UFOP pin prominently on the front of her hoodie. Ali/Ila's tail is tipped with a fluffed tuft of hair, which she dyes the same shade of red as the hair on her head.“
One of my friends took that and comissioned somebody else to draw her for me. This way I ended up with this lovely and amazing thing:
Tumblr media
At first it was all production secret, none of us was allowed to share any of it. But once Overtale got cancelled, the whole project stopped being secret, the main developer even published whole long document with all the plot.
And then I came up with this idea to make a liveblog with Jean and I found myself being extremely lost as to what I should use as the logo. I didn’t want to just grab some picture from the Internet, it just felt wrong to kinda “steal” somebody’s else work. And I wanted it to be something more personal too.
And then I reminded myself of Ali, the cat monster with personality, hair style and color, and fashion choices modeled after me. It felt like a perfect choice.
The time of hanging out with other Undertale fans, coming up with creative ideas, chatting about random stuff and chilling together was one of the greatest time of my life. So having Ali here brings me warm and nostalgic emotions. Maybe she never got to be a character in the game, but I could not just let her fade away. So I took her along for this new project.
The End.

So I wrote a Twist-story
I absolutely adore @itsladykit ‘s boy Twist from her Twistfell AU. Actually, I adore all of her boys from all of her AUs, so much so that I wanted to write a story about them. Unfortunately, the more I love a tough and cool character, the more I love hurt/comfort involving that character. Fortunately, Lady Kit is fantastic at providing that. Unfortunately, I wanted even more, and I was also sad that Twist is so hopeless about his LV problem, so this story came to mind. It sprang from Lady Kit’s story Bucket List (the AO3 version), so it makes more sense if you read that first (although if you’re considering reading this and haven’t already read Lady Kit’s stuff, what are you doing here? Go read her stories, she’s incredibly awesome).
I’m hesitant to write it because it seems strange to write hurt/comfort with someone else’s characters (ignoring the fact that all fanfiction uses someone else’s characters) but Lady Kit does like hurt/comfort and has stated that people are free to write in her worlds, and it doesn’t get into any subject that she has stated she wants to avoid, so I decided to give it a try. I also don’t know what I’m doing with writing a story and posting it to the internet, but we’ll see how it goes. Lady Kit please don’t hate me if you see this and don’t like it.  I’ll take it down or change it if you want. I’m sorry I’m awkward.
So now I will post this and go hide.
Summary: There’s a cure for LV (probably). It’s completely safe (probably). It’s a highly unpleasant experience (definitely). Twist only cares about that first statement. He probably should have paid a little more attention to the other two. But what does it matter? He’s getting what he wants, and he has the best friends and family in any universe to help along the way.
Chapter 1
“Gah! What the hell is their problem? Don’t they realize what I have here?” Iggy snarls at the review panel’s response to her official report, slamming her bowl of ramen on the desk before sheepishly wiping up the noodles that spill over the side. After the sudden increase in funding from an anonymous donor, the LV reduction project has progressed beyond her wildest dreams. She’d honestly been losing hope just a few months ago, but access to any resources she can imagine has changed things. Well, access to resources and a little creative bending of surface laws on ethical treatment of research subjects.
“Those damn laws,” she growls. She’d looked into them at the urging of her Taleverse counterparts, and, fine, maybe some of her methods are just a little bit illegal here. But those laws just don’t take into account the importance of her work! Following all of the required procedures could delay the project for years, maybe decades. Monsters don’t want to wait decades to get rid of LV, and that includes her research subjects. A few might have melted in the process, but that was only in the beginning and those monsters were too far gone into their LV to care anyway. Besides, that problem is long since solved. While her more recent subjects didn’t particularly enjoy the treatment, they all came out of it alive and with lower LV. They got what they wanted, however much they might have complained along the way. The point is, she’d created the impossible, a drug that can dissolve LV without dissolving the rest of the monster.
“It doesn’t even do any permanent damage to the subject’s soul anymore! What can they possibly have to complain about now?” she mutters, reading further into the report.
“‘Promising, but requires further testing,’ my ass.” She’s done the testing. She’s shown that it works. The subject pool is a little limited, but the trends are consistent and easily extrapolated. Of course, ‘Extrapolation outside the range of available data is not sufficiently reliable to support approval for mass production,’ according to several reviewers.
“Well, maybe they have a point there,” she allows. “A slight one.” Extrapolating from an LV of 9, the highest of her successful test subjects so far, to the full range of monsters who need the treatment might be going a little too far.
“Well what am I supposed to do about it?” She throws up her hands in exasperation. They want all research participation to be voluntary, but they also want the treatment tested on high LV monsters. “Have they ever met a monster with high LV!?” Not exactly the most cooperative research subjects. Some of them might say they want to get rid of their LV, but just try sticking a needle in their soul and see how long they keep cooperating. An uncooperative high LV monster can cause a lot of trouble. She shudders. There’s no way she’s dealing with that again. Then there’s the subjective data. Monsters on the edge of losing their minds are terrible at answering questions about the experience during treatment, and the panel refuses to accept her results without some form of patient report.
Ugh. Those self-righteous assholes want to deny her brilliant, revolutionary cure to all of monster-kind on the basis of a few technicalities. She taps her claws against the desk, fuming. “There has to be a way around this.” If she can just find someone, anyone, with high LV who is reasonably sane and would be motivated enough or have little enough sense of self-preservation to be a cooperative research subject…
Oh. Well of course there’s Papyrus. Well, a Papyrus, the one from her universe. The crazy one who goes by Twist now. That bastard has been on the edge of losing it for years but has never quite tipped over the edge. She nearly had him a few years ago, back when she first started her work underground, but his brother talked him out of it. Undyne kept trying to convince the little fluff ball for her, but eventually they’d given up. But now… Things are different now. Not with the fluff ball, but if she can just go around the fluff ball…
Twist is losing his mind. Anyone even tangentially acquainted with that multi-universal pack of skeletons knows that. Anyone with any basic understanding of LV should know that. The fact that he’s kept it mostly together this long suggests a level of determination or attachment or stubbornness or something that most monsters don’t have. Maybe enough of it to actually go through with the treatment? And based on some of the stunts she’s heard of, a high sense of self-preservation won’t be a problem. So, highly motivated, unlikely to be scared away by any necessary unpleasantness, really not much to lose given the deadline he has to know he’s living under, and LV high enough that no one can say she’s extrapolating outside the range of her data. He’s perfect. Now she just has to get to him where no one else will have a chance to talk him out of it, at least until it’s too late to change his mind.
***
All that being said, it seems best to approach Twist at work, away from all the others. Undyne still keeps track of all possible troublemakers from their universe so it’s easy to find out where he works. That’s how she finds herself greeting a pair of skeletal legs sticking out from underneath a car.
“Twist? Is that you under the car?” she calls.
“Yep, I’m the only skeleton workin’ here so if yer talkin’ to a skeleton under a car it’s prob’ly me.” He rolls out from under the car and waves. “Hey, Iggy. Whatcha doin’ ‘round here? Havin’ car trouble? We’ll getcha fixed up in no time.”
“No, no car trouble. Actually, I have a proposal for you.”
“A proposal?” Twist teases with raised browbones, “well now ya got my interest. Does yer girl know ‘bout this proposal? I’m up fer anythin’, but I’m not so sure she is.”
“Not that kind of proposal!” Fellverse monsters shouldn’t blush this easily.
“What kind of proposal it is, then? Does everyone have ta be dressed, or is that negotiable?”
“It’s not that kind of proposal! Forget that I said the word proposal. It has nothing to do with a proposal. Can you please try to be serious for one minute?”
“Proposals can be very serious.” Iggy glares and Twist grins. “Fine, fine, what’s this not-proposal ya got fer me?”
“You know what I’ve been working on since Asriel’s coronation, don’t you?” Twist abruptly loses his teasing air.
“I do. Think I’ve told ya before that I’m not really in’erested in meltin’, though.”
“Oh, no, the research is way past that point. No one’s melted in months, well, I mean a little bit, but not melted, melted, and I’ve got that part worked out too. Actually, that’s what I came here to tell you. I’ve found a cure!” Twist’s jaw drops.
“What? Ya found… what?”
“A cure for LV! Money from a new major donor gave me access to equipment and materials that I never dreamed of, which let me break through a few major obstacles that had stumped me for years, and now the treatment is already in clinical trials and it works! It really works!” Twist stumbles against the car and decides to sit down before he falls down as his legs give out in shock.
“Are, are ya serious?” Iggy nods enthusiastically. “Yer not exaggeratin’, or brushin’ over some technicalities, or playin’ some sick practical joke ‘cause I swear if you are ya won’ leave this place alive, or…”
“No, no, no, none of that. It’s not an easy cure like ‘take a pill, then get all better right away’ easy, and like I said, it’s still in clinical trials so it’s not approved for the mass market yet, but it’s real and it works.”
“When can I have it?”
“Once it makes it through clinical trials it will have to be approved by a review board and the sovereigns, so whenever all that is done is when it will be available to the general public.” She’s got him. She’s definitely got him. Now is the time to reel him in.
“An’ when’ll that be?
“I don’t know. The real holdup is the clinical trials. I need to show that it’s safe and effective in monsters across the whole range of possible LV, and volunteers with high LV are hard to find. The highest I’ve had so far is 9.” Twist’s sockets narrow. He’s clearly caught on to what she’s doing.
“An’ I suppose ya came here today hopin’ ta find a volunteer.”
“Well, yes. I didn’t think you’d mind. It would give you access to the treatment months or even years earlier than you’d have it otherwise and I know LV is a particularly time-sensitive issue for you.”
“Mhmm. Can’t deny ya’ve got a point there. An’ can ya guarantee I won’t melt?”
“Absolutely no melting. I’m not saying the treatment will be fun. It’s actually pretty painful and can go on for days, even weeks to get rid of as much LV as you have. You’ll probably want to come up with something to tell your friends and family unless you want them worrying about you the whole time. But won’t it be worth it to come home free of LV and having paved the way for everyone else to be free of LV too?”
“So that’s the whole story, huh? I come with you, get this ‘treatment,’ be miserable for a few weeks an’ then I‘m cured? Why do I suspect yer leavin’ somethin’ out?”
“I’m really not. I mean, I haven’t explained every detail, but I will if you come back to the lab with me. I’ll explain the whole process and you can back out at any time before we start, but I know you’re not going to want to because I know you want this. Come on, do you really want to wait around until you hurt someone or lose your mind? I’ve worked with plenty of monsters who lost themselves to their LV-”
“An’ melted quite a few of ‘em.”
“-and that’s not something you want to go through, or put your little brother through. I know you two are close. Just imagine what it would be like for him if one day you attack him, or if he finds out you just went crazy one day and you’re never coming back, or if you kill yourself to keep that from happening.”
“Ok, yes, I get it! I don’ need ta hear it, I already know all that shit!”
“Now imagine coming home to him and telling him truthfully that none of that is ever going to happen, that all of your LV is gone and you can live the rest of your lives without ever worrying about it again. Imagine the same for your friends, each of them losing the LV that’s been weighing on them or their loved ones for years. Imagine what it’ll do for monster-human relations when humans can no longer point to high LV monsters to prove that all monsters are dangerous and shouldn’t have any rights. Imagine-”
“That’s enough! Ya think I don’ know what gettin’ rid of LV would mean? Think I don’ think about it every fuckin’ day?”
“I know you do. That’s why I know you want this. If you want to eliminate LV, and I know you do, then come help me get rid of it. We have the power to do something completely, unequivocally good, here. Just come to my lab and we can do it. We can do it today!”
“Ok.”
“You know you want to-”
“I said ok!” Twist snaps. “You can stop yer grand speech. ‘M convinced. Let’s go cure LV. Jus’ lemme finish with this car an’ I’ll go take off work an’ tell my bro that ‘m going on vacation fer awhile. He’ll be annoyed I didn’t warn him but he won’ be that surprised that I went off on some random trip.”

We have evidence that Kris cares for Suzie but what if they don't like Ralsei? We as the player have a lot of opportunities to lavish that fluffy cutie with affection but how does Kris feel
i dunno! tbh the few negative responses i’ve seen to how you can treat ralsei seem especially harsh and dismissive; given that it’s more usual for a player to want to treat him nicely, maybe it can be assumed kris isn’t fond of him?
like, it’s been a while, but i’m trying to recall if there are any truly malicious (but ultimately harmless) choices you can make as frisk back in undertale. in all honesty i’d say the harshest thing you can do is not hug Asriel at the end, or maybe a couple dismissive dialogue options i cant recall specifically. even when you try to be more energetic or ‘harsh’, like when you’re cooking with Undyne and choose the aggressive options, frisk still acts very softly.
when we make cute/loving/goofy choices as frisk, it feels a bit more like there’s some of frisk in those actions. maybe that’s because there wasn’t so clear a line drawn between player and character in UT as there has been in DR - kris’ autonomy is heavily in question. but as i said in another post of mine, we can still infer things based on specific details, and the small ways that kris does act on their own.
given that you can behave in a more explicitly rude/mean way with ralsei - i think the biggest example i’ve seen so far is dropping the manual he makes twice, with the second time being so aggressive it actually falls apart from its bindings - might indicate that the negative feelings are more genuine.
this would make some sense, i think, for kris to be less fond of ralsei. ralsei is down for following the prophecy, if only because he’s desperate for companionship in the form if his fellow heroes. he is also the most critical of susie’s aggressive personality. meanwhile kris seems fond of susie, who despite espousing the whole ‘your choices dont matter’ mindset, is at least more spirited and determined to do what she wants. and, funnily enough, encouraging of others (whereas ralsei is critical).
aaaand, if we really wanna speculate, it could have something to do with ralsei and asriel - kris’ brother - being inherently linked. maybe kris also has dubious feelings about asriel? maybe kris responds to ralsei in a slightly less friendly way because... what, he reminds them of their brother?
oh, that could actually make some sense. asriel is obviously shown as being... well, could be framed as being ‘the better child’. his entire half of the room is more colorful than kris’, the shelves covered in trophies. everyone thinks well of asriel. he’s older too! that’s a long shadow to be stuck in, especially when comparatively kris is the quiet, kinda weird kid who pulls mean pranks and will eat any and all nearby sweets with little regard for sharing.
perhaps there’s some common sibling resentment there, and kris projects it onto ralsei a bit...

Prediction for Deltarune Chapters 2-7
 -Spoilers under the cut-
Chapter 2:A fourth player joins the team but it’s not Noelle, it’s Jockington (A Gunner) who only needed to get a pencil. There’s a second fountain in need of closing and Ralsei is concerned about the fourth member. Kris is still mostly sane at this point. Lancer returns but this time as a good guy and this time they fight in a town full of stuffed animals. They seal the fountain and the three return to the outside world. After defeating the boss of this world, Susie also shows Kris that she did her work some point in the chapter and Kris says that they’re starting theirs. Jockington makes a joke about how they might be a thing which Susie gets all angry at. Kris then goes home, learns omnisans secret, and works on the project for a little bit, tearing their soul out and mentioning that “you are not in control of me.” Chapter 3:Susie and Kris go to China town, literally, unaware that they’re getting followed by Catti (summoner). She was curious why Kris and Susie had been skipping class lately. She says she’s gonna tell Alphys about their behavior unless they tell the truth. When she tries activating her phone though, there’s no wi fi so she’s forced to play protagonist number 5 until the final boss. During their time Susie asks Catti if she and Jokcingotn are dating to which she replies,  with a maybe. Kris dosen’t like this and demands a yes or no answer. Ralsei reminds Kris that they are on borrowed time and that now isn’t the right place to fight. Upon returning to the light world, Susie notices a black spot on the wall but thinks nothing of it. Kris shows Susie the progress that they made in their project and as a reward Susie decides to award them by letting them see their home. During their trip to her house Asriel calls saying “Hey Kris! I’m gonna be coming home on Sunday!” Kris starts to cry at this statement.
Chapter 4:You want Noelle to be a protagonist now don’t you? Well here’s the Healer Noelle chapter you wanted. Alphys says that due to something happening the supplies cabinet is locked up. Susie is angry at this and demands Alphys opens it up but is persuaded other wise when Kris says “DO NOT OPEN IT, OR WE DON’T KNOW WHAT WILL BE UNLEASHED.” So Susie and Kris decide to just skip the darker world today until Noelle joins them and says that her dad needs help at the hospital. They fall down a medicine cabnet and find medicine monsters. Ralsei says that there’s no fountain here but understands that Neolle’s father is probably in need of the medicine so he helps. Through out the Chapter it’s obvious that Kris’ is acting...weird. Their soul isn’t there and you seem to lose control of them at times. While Ralsei finds this odd Susie is enjoying this and Noelle, being used to their bullcrap, ignores this. There’s also also a love confession scene with Noelle and Susie...which sadly does not go well, not matter what you do. After finding the medicine Noelle is depressed and decides that it would be best if she walked home alone. Susie thinks that she was kinda harsh and her and decides to make it up tomorrow. Kris is left alone to walk from home to here. It’s there they meet Sans, who has had his eye on them ever since they laid eyes. They talk about their natural distrust towards one another which is soon interrupted by Papyrus offering ravioli. DUN DUN DUUUUUUUUUUN. Also there’s a black puddle on the way back home and Toriel seems to be a bit unwell, BUT RAVIOLI INSTEAD OF SPAGETHI IS THE MAIN THING
Chapter 5:Berdly (inventor) is the last one to join team KSR. Ralsei, being Ralsei, tries to tolerate him but it’s very hard to when he keeps brining up science stuff. What makes matters worse is that they’re in the science lab. Susie thinks about how she’ll make things up with Noelle and she’s a lot more nervous then usual. Kris is still like they are in Chapter 4. Ralsei says that there’s one more fountain to be closed but up next is the strongest enemy they’ve faced so far so he’s glad that he brought Lancer along for the ride. Oh Lancer is there as well BTW, it’s 5 vs ? during most of the battles, except the ones in a specific part which is only Susie and Kris. After defeating the boss Ralsei warns Kris that even though all the fountains are sealed, there’s still danger. For the knight still walks alone and the angel is yet to be seen. Upon returning to the light world Berldy realizes how much of class he misses and hopes he can make it up. Susie talks to Noelle about what happened last night in the dark world and you don’t get to see if they make up or not. Upon the walk home, there’s a lot of worry and panic throughout the town. More and more people start talking about a mysterious dark spots in the town. Alphys reports to a local police lady that the world as we know it is going to end and Undyne gives her a big hug. Napstablook, chief police, says he’ll do investigating but when he steps over the puddle something interesting happens. The police hat he’s wearing turns into headphones. And when Kris steps over it they turn into their darkener self. The chapter ends with Kris threatening to stab the soul... Chapter 6:...But that doesn’t happen thanks to a restraint from Toriel. The town is in a panic. There are no visits to the dark world today. Kris calls Asriel who still says that he's coming over which is the only good news Kris head. No one is happy, well except Susie, who for once in her life time feels as though there’s nothing to worry about she’s got her side of the project done and Kris is almost done with theirs so they should be good. It’s at this moment the other classmates appear and talk to Susie and Kris about their adventures in the dark world and explain that Ralsei might have been twisting the truth a little bit in his prophecy. Berdly states that, upon doing some research, there was only supposed to be two heroes, a human and a monster and that if they were to seal these fountains the sky would turn black. Susie gets angry all of the sudden and demands that they find Ralsei and have him explain his actions at once. Kris though pulls the dagger out of their pocket and says otherwise and “you’ll have to get through me first, Suzy.” You play as the five other students in their regular forms and although they don’t have Kris’ dagger or abilities they had in the dark they do have their natural abilities. Susie asks what they hell that was about and Kris explains that they are not who is in control at all times sometimes -your vessel name here- takes over. It’s then your vessels pops out of your soul and reveals it’s form that you did. It doesn’t say anything and simply disappears. Suddenly Kris feels in control of their body again and lets go of the knife. Right now they’ve got one more thing to do, find Ralsei and the knight. First things first, Ralsei. After fighting tons and tons of bad guys, the six eventually find him near a forest and they ask him what Ralsei really wanted. “It’s quite simple really,” says the dark prince “I wanted you to be fooled by an innocent look.” In reality he was the angel that was to bring chaos to this land and before you know it, new home is covered in darkness. Everyone is scared now. People don’t know what to do and thus the gang has to fight him. Thankfully, he gave them their powers back. But first, the monsters must find the knight. Chapter 7:Leaving Kris behind they reunite with Lancer and decide to add him to the party one last time meaning it’s basically 6 against 1 and 8 if they can get the knight to side with them. It takes a little why but they do find out who created the Dark World at least “Dr.Gaster” whose from a parralel universe known as Undertale, which he can no longer return too. So he created this universe in his image with a few familiar faces and some new. However it seems that there was an error in his makings or something. The knight appears and fights Dr.Gaster, no matter how good of a fighter you are the knight will grab his soul and run off with it. However don’t lose hope. For with his soul came a hint to the knight’s location. Once they find the knight he asks “where is Kris?” they refuse to tell them their location and get into a fight. The fight is rigged for him to lose no matter what you do. He surrenders but still wants to know where Kris is, for only he and Kris can stop Ralsei. Ultimately they cooperate and each one goes and fights a boss from the world they appeared in but not by themselves. Susie gets help from MK, Temmie Alphys, and Snowy. Jockington gets help from Alvin, Mettaton, Napstablook & Undyne. Catty, Bratty, the blue bunny and Burgerpants help out Catti. Sans, Papyrus, and Rudolph help Noelle and Berdly. Finally Susie and Lancer get help from the Dreemurs and Gaster. Kris and the Knight have to fight the second boss before Ralsei before they can reach him. After that they reach Ralsei once and fight him in his new found angelic form. ZUN helps compose the music for the final boss themes and in order to defeat him you’re gonna need a lot of time to get him. There’s 3 phases, one of him saying that balance needs not be restored and that your’e the ones restoring the balance. The second is of him showing him the true demon behind the angel wings and with wings of familiar colors appear. Scars, injuries and a destroyed kingdom are all explained through this phase. Eventually it seems like the Kris is about to give up but then phase 3 happens with the most unexpected twist. “...No you can’t die now Kris.” he says “And why not?” they ask.
“...Because I haven’t even got you hot choclate yet.” After defeating the demon Ralsei once and for all the truth is explained to Kris. Asriel’s college is were he studies parallel worlds or something like that and the dark world here was a parallel version fo the light world. However Ralsei was sick and tired of balance all the time, he wanted chaos and disorder so he went and did just that. He eventually gets arrested and light and dark is restored again with hometown being a mix of light and dark. Ralsei is jail mates with King Chaos and Lancer transfers schools to go with Susie. She doesn’t get together with Noelle, but she’s moved on to a girl that she meet in the darker world. Undyne and Alphys get together. Omnisan finally tells us their secret. The dog finishes his game. Kris and Asriel go get that hot choclate and life returns  to usual. With Kris pulling out the soul again, but more gently...and setting it down in the cage saying “thank you.”

Deltarune Chapter 1: The Official Undertale AU
Tumblr media
At 6:00 AM PST, on Halloween 2018, the official Undertale twitter account released what is essentially a demo for the next game by Toby Fox, deltarune. Between the baffling intro, the odd relationship with the original Undertale, and the implied involvement of a certain missing doctor, everything about this game was shrouded in mystery.
And I loved it.
(Spoilers and Review below the cut)
Part 1: The Story
Tumblr media
At first glance, most people assumed this mysterious new game would be a sequel (or possibly prequel) to Undertale. After all, it involves a number of shared characters, the titular rune was prominently featured in Undertale, and even the name “Delta rune” is an anagram for “Undertale”.
However, the relationship between the two is much stranger, and the plots are largely unconnected.
After creating an avatar and having the game unceremoniously throw it in the garbage, you play as Kris (that lovely person up there), the human child of Asgore and Toriel, and younger sibling to Asriel Dreemurr. Right off the bat, about a million questions are raised, especially since later conversations indicate Kris has at least been living with the Dreemurrs’ since they were too young to know their species, but we’ll come back to that.
Toriel drives you to school, though still get there late, and Alphys (who is your teacher here) puts you in a group with Susie, the only student to show up after you, to work together on a group project. However, when she realizes she doesn’t have any chalk, she sends the two of you to go get some from the school’s broom closet. You catch Susie eating chalk, she threatens to eat your face but doesn’t, and you head off to the broom closet.
Then things get weird.
Tumblr media
After that, it sort of follows a plot line similar to the original: you fall into another world, there’s a bunch of monsters you can either fight or spare, and you just have to keep going up and to the left to fulfill a prophecy & get to the exit, all while dealing with ambiguously evil characters who are more silly than dangerous. It is, however, a bit shorter, with only about ten unique enemies and only three areas in the whole game. But hey, it is technically just the first chapter, so what do you expect.
Of course, what really makes an Undertale is the characters. Since you’re in a different world for most of the game, the returning characters from Undertale don’t have much of a presence outside the very beginning and very end. Instead, we focus on a handful of new characters, all of whom are pretty well-rounded and developed, with the exception of Kris, our silent, somewhat-ambiguously-gendered protagonist. Susie, in particular, goes through a pretty nice character arc, going from someone who’d casually threaten to rip your face off and eat it, to an actual antagonist at one point, before eventually working her way back to being a good guy and someone you can actually be friends with! It’s definitely the strongest arc in the game so far.
There’s also Lancer!
Tumblr media
He’s a villain.
And not a skeleton.
Tumblr media
Just trust me on this.
Part 2: Presentation
Tumblr media
Just to get it out of the way, the music is fantastic. Of course it is. It’s an Undertale spinoff and, more importantly, it’s made by Toby “Radiation” “I could shit out a better soundtrack than most of you will ever even imagine” Fox.
I will however say that I prefer Deltarune’s sound design in general to Undertale, though. Don’t get me wrong, Undertale still has the better OST (for now at least), but Deltarune’s sound effects JUST beat it out in my books. In particular, I felt like the text sounds for most of the characters was, on average, less annoying than in Undertale. Again, don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate Undertale’s voices, but some of them could get a little ear-grating, especially for characters who talked a LOT throughout the game. Here, with the exception of one returning character (where the irritation was kind of the joke anyways), all of them work really well. There’s even a tiny bit of voice acting from a couple of the more important characters! So, big thumbs up there.
More pressingly, however, are the visuals. In case it wasn’t obvious from the above screenshots (aside from that second one of Lancer, maybe), the graphics have gotten a MAJOR glow up since the last game. Temmie Chang, aka “Most Precious Meme”, is still the main Artist for the game, and Undertale is by no means a bad looking game. However, in general, the games’ art went from “Beautiful and sometimes even breathtaking” to consistently “HOLY SHIT MY EYES ARE NOT EQUIPPED TO COPE WITH SUCH SHEER BRILLIANCE!!!”
You think I’m exaggerating, but I legit dropped my jaw at a lot of this game’s visuals. I mean, just look at this one End-game animation!
Tumblr media
I think this one short scene has more detail and frame than Asgore’s overworld sprite got in the entirety of Undertale.
On the slight downside, however, we no longer get the full-body monochromatic battle sprites from Undertale, as enemies appear in battle almost identically to how they appear in the world. Still, with this much more detail in overworld sprites, it’s not even a slight loss.
Speaking of battle...
Part 3: Gameplay
Tumblr media
Yep, the gameplay has gotten a major overhaul over the past three years. First, as the screenshot should make obvious, you have a team now! Yep, in addition to Kris, you can get up to three additional party members over the course of your adventure, including Susie!
In general, what you can do in battles with Kris is mostly the same; you can Fight by hitting the button at the right time, Act in certain ways to make the enemies not want to fight you, use an Item really quick, or Spare an enemy who you don’t want to kill. You also have the option to defend, which will lessen the damage you take if you get hit during the obligatory bullet-hell attacks your enemies dish out.
Where things get really interesting, though, is the team mechanics. You see, every character is different, and everyone but Kris can use magic (although some of Kris’s ACT commands kinda seem like magic?). However, only Kris can directly ACT, with other party members only being able to preform certain set spells. So, instead, Kris can command the other party members to perform actions, or Kris can ACT while the others defend, use items, or attack. If you use a Team ACT, the other party member(s) involved won’t be able to do anything else that turn, but said Team ACTs are usually more powerful or potent as a result. The whole thing can set up for actually strategic choices in battle: In Undertale, since most enemies only had one or two ways to spare them, the most strategy you could use on a Pacifist play through was “Which enemy should I deal with first?” Here, you have to figure how you’re going to handle each encounter. Do you have Kris ACT first, then have another party member spare that monster in the same turn? Or do you act WITH that party member, and next turn be able to spare at least two monsters?
In addition to the battle system being reworked, there were a number of smaller, quality of life changes:
You now have three item categories: Items (your standard consumables), Gear (your armor and weapons), and Key Items (your cellphone and a couple other important things).
You can sell at pretty much every shop in the “Dark” world, which makes sense, since you’re mostly selling food, armor, and weapons-things people in this world would need to survive.
Each character in your party uses a different kind of weapon, but all of them use the same armor, and you can give them all two pieces of armor each, so you can stack defense and get extra boosts!
Choices are mostly presented in a cross pattern, so you just have to pick a direction and confirm to choose that option.
THERE IS NOW A RUN BUTTON AND IN THE OPTIONS YOU CAN CHANGE SO YOU AUTO-RUN AND THE RUN BUTTON IS JUST A WALK BUTTON!
And speaking of which, YOU CAN ACCESS THE MENU FROM WITHIN THE MAIN GAME! THANK YOU!
You can also have up to three save files at once, although I’ve heard each file has some minor differences in flavor-text across the game, so be on the look-out for that.
Overall, I feel like I honestly prefer the game play to Undertale. In fact, with the exception of the story (which is mostly underdeveloped because, again, this is basically just a very long demo), I honestly prefer most of Deltarune to Undertale. While it isn’t technically a sequel, per se, it does do what any good sequel should do: use the original as a starting point and just improve almost everything. It’s almost like the Bioshock Infinite to Undertale’s Bioshock, if that makes sense.
(Would that make System Shock 2 Homestuck? Am I over thinking this?)
Now, with the actual review out of the way, we can get to the main event.
Part 4: Co̞͞n̤̠͎̙̥̗n̸̰̜̳͚͓͇͍e̸͈͉̳̺c̭̮̬̖̭̗̳͠t͍͓͘i̖̺͙͇̟̫o̢̰̜̦n͈̮̼͈͎͖̦s͈͝ ̹̙̦͈̯̜A̡̟̥ņ̥͙̗d̛͙̤̦͈̹̪͚ ̺T͍̞h̡̜̝̟̬e͏̱̹̲ͅ ͕̯̰͍̜͇͍D͝oc̜t̸̺̱̯͙̠o̷̱r͈̟̣̤̯
Tumblr media
As I mentioned before, this game isn’t technically a sequel to Undertale. None of the events of Undertale seem to have occurred in this universe, including (seemingly) things from before the game even began. This becomes especially apparent after you leave the “Dark” world and can explore town, talking to various people. Character relationships are almost universally reset, there is no mention of the “Underground”, and considering Asriel is still alive and in college, it’s safe to say there is no Flowey in this world. It could almost be passed off as a complete alternate continuity, or even a reboot, if it weren’t for a few...
Tumblr media
oddities.
Yep, among the returning characters, Sans makes an appearance, having apparently just moved into town and never having met you before. Despite having apparently met Toriel the night before in the grocery store, and having a business relationship with your teacher, Alphys. Plus, there's the fact that what used to be Grillby’s and the Bone Brother’s house both look WAY too close to there original versions (no other building looks that similar), the fact that of ALL the returning characters, only Sans looks the exact same (no redesign, visible aging, or even new clothing), and the fact that some of Kris’s dialogue choices seem to reference things that haven’t happened in this universe, and other characters notice them acting...different.
Plus, you know, there’s Chapter 1′s ending.
Tumblr media
Yeah.
(Plus, as you might have noticed at the top of this part, there’s a monster who is the only one in either game who looks similar to this Gaster Follower)
Tumblr media
All of this seems to point to something much more sinister going on. And, for those who haven’t seen it, the tweets leading up to the demo’s release might just explain why.
Tumblr media
Now, we aren’t quite sure who this is supposed to be, but judging by their vocabulary and how they type, it’s a pretty safe assumption we’re being chatted to by our favorite former royal scientist. And, sure enough, most people are assuming that this entity is at least some version of Dr. W. D. Gaster. Why is he doing this? What does it all mean? Why was the Delta Rune even slightly relevant to the plot of this chapter aside from there being three prophesied heroes?

3, 7, 22, 23, 48, 50!
This post ended up being really long, so… answers below the cut!
3. In your opinion, what’s your best fic?
So far, I’m really proud of how The Most Glamorous Puzzle of All is turning out; it’s giving me exercises in character development, and I can write in a lot of different styles depending on the prompts and what I choose to do with them. As the summary for that fic mentions, chapters can be anywhere between silly, angsty, and fluffy. Also, I’m having fun seeing how these two work together, both as friends and as a couple - and hey, it’s Papyton fluff, and it’s really hard to go wrong with that, in my opinion!
As for my oneshots, I really like a lot of them, but I can’t help but feel proud of With You in My Sights for condensing the development of the relationship into six brief scenes and still having it come out with nice pacing (at least in my opinion).
(I’m also quite proud of some of my NSFW fics, but given that they’re… well, NSFW, I’d rather not discuss them on this blog, since I’m trying to keep it family-friendly over here. I do have a NSFW sideblog, but so far, all I’ve done over there is publish links to my fics with the occasional text post about one of them.)
7. What’s the fic you most want to continue (unfinished or no)?
I know I want to see Glamorous Puzzle completed with all 100 chapters, but I also really want to publish more chapters for my pro wrestling AU Contendertale; I have lots of worldbuilding planned for that fic, and it’s gonna be really cool! (At least, I hope…) Also, I hope to publish more chapters to my Undertale/Mother 1 crossover Sing a Melody of Determination someday, though I think I may need to rewrite that one a little; back when I wrote it, I was still open to referring to Frisk and Chara with non-canon pronouns, but now that I’ve changed my mind about that and started referring to them exclusively with their canonical they/them pronouns, I think I should edit the story accordingly before I continue. I do have lots of cool plans for that fic, too…
(Also, I should get off my lazy behind and finally finish the final chapter of Frisk and Asriel’s Special Day; I’ve already written most of it, but I just have a little more that I need to finish.)
Heck, maybe someday, if I ever return to the Digimon fandom, I could finally finish my fic Heroes Wear Green; I may need to do a little tweaking here and there, but I had so many awesome plans for that story, and I don’t want them to go to waste (but at the same time, I’m reluctant to hand any of my stories off to anyone else). That being said, given that I’m not anywhere near as much into Digimon as I used to be, it might not happen anytime soon; besides, I still have all those cool Undertale stories to finish.
22. Has there ever been anyone who’s made you freak out because they read your work and followed/favorited/reviewed?
Well, for starters, several months ago when I published a little story about Mettaton going stargazing with Papyrus and asking him a certain question, the very same person who sent this ask left a nice review for that fic; given that I’d read a number of his fluff pieces and liked them (though I was kinda shy about leaving kudos or reviews at the time), as well as him being a popular Papyton writer, my thought process was pretty much “wait, you think my stories are good? Wowie!” In general, whenever a popular Papyton author leaves a nice review on my work, it gives me a “whoa!” feeling because their work probably inspired mine, even if only in the slightest of ways.
23. What’s the nicest review you’ve ever gotten?
It’s hard for me to pick just one, so here are just a few of my favorites (note: some of these are just excerpts from longer reviews):
you had me at “tooth-rotting fluff” in the tags. I love this stuff, it feels utterly soul-cleansing. -review for The Joys of Sleeping In (look familiar?)
[…]And I always look forward to reading this book, every time I see there’s a new chapter, I must admit, I squeal a bit xD-review for chapter 42 of Glamorous Puzzle
[…]“Who the hell am I?
I AM hell” I swear to God that was the greatest thing I’ve ever read! -review for chapter 43 of Glamorous Puzzle, from the same reviewer directly above, referring to a quote in that chapter that I was hoping people would like, since I’m proud of that quote as well.
[…]I can’t believe I missed so many good NoSleepUntilVacation stories!  I need to catch up![…] -review for A Cool Day for a Cool Dude; this one made me feel like “whoa, my work is that good?”
There were a couple of other ones for one of my NSFW stories, and while both are too long to be posted here, they both warmed my heart to a huge degree (hint: one of them should look quite familiar to the person who sent this ask!)
48. Does anyone you know from outside of fandom know you write fanfic? Are they involved in the same fandom too?
I prefer to keep my fanfic life and my IRL life separate, since there are people in my life who I would prefer didn’t know about this hobby of mine, for various reasons. Since a lot of what I write involves a slightly niche pairing, and some of it is NSFW, and the vast majority of my writings are Undertale (a controversial topic in several circles), I’m kinda nervous about bringing it up. I have met some Undertale fans in real life, though, but given that they were my classmates in team projects, we didn’t really talk about Undertale as much as we talked about the assignments we were doing.
50. Has writing fanfic had a significant impact on your life? Would you say it’s entirely positive?
The thing about writing fanfic (for me at least) was that I had to write quite a few duds before I struck gold. And back in my earliest days, I wrote a lot of duds; it’s for this reason that I often feel unsure about ever returning to the Digimon fandom, since a lot of what I wrote was mediocre at best and disgraceful at worst (characters in-name-only, lots of lolrandom humor, the heroes looking like total dorks because I was in a phase of liking the villains the best - all while removing the traits that made them villains, etc.) and it was only around the time shortly before I left the fandom that I really started to take my writing seriously. It may be hard for me to think of some of the characters (both heroes and villains) without thinking of how I horribly mangled everything about them for some cheap attempts at “comedy”.
So that’s the negative side of my fanfic writing; now onto the positive! Since starting this hobby, I’ve slowly become more confident in expressing myself, and I’m believing in my own writing skills more and more. Also, knowing that a story of mine could be the thing to brighten someone’s day (as shown in some of the reviews I quoted above) is always a good motivator. Especially since a lot of what I write is close to my heart; it’s stuff that I would like to read myself. Another big thing is that, when I was younger, I was hoping to become a good artist so I could animate cartoons; I never quite got the hang of the intricacies of drawing, but I’ve noticed that my writing has definitely gotten better, so I’ve realized that maybe, just maybe, this is where my true talent lies.
And, of course, I’ve made a lot of friends (and, at one point, even found love) through both reading and writing fanfiction, and while not all of those friendships have lasted (sadly, the romantic relationship didn’t last, either), the people I’ve met because of this hobby are still very special to my heart. I think it’s safe to say that I owe a lot of my friendships, directly or indirectly, to my fanfic writing; given that, when I first started out, I was - in real life - the shy, easily-startled girl who got bullied a lot, it was much easier for me to let my guard down around people who didn’t know my IRL identity. Even though my situation has gotten better since then, I still find it easier to make friends online than in real life, since I’m more likely to find people who share common interests, like Undertale or favorite bands… or fanfiction!

Undertale & delta rune Sequel/Prequel/Post-Genocide/AU Theory
There seems to be a disagreement about what delta rune is in regards to Undertale. According to Toby’s Q&A that this is an alternate universe where choice does not matter. He also stated that Undertale and its characters had a happy ending and that nothing we do here can affect them.  But there is still some discourse in weather the game is a sequel/prequel/post-genocide/au/some unholy combination of that. Strap in, I think it’s the last one.
To clarify, there will be four characters I will be mainly focusing on that the games seem to revolve around. I’ll be clarifying each one and how that character makes each of the “quells” possible.
Sequel: OK, this is the one that goes right into Meta territory. I think it is safe to say that in Undertale you were part of the story. Not Frisk, not Chara, you: the player. You are controlling the vessel in the game. This is backed up by how if you boot up Undertale Flowey calls YOU by the name you entered. Delta rune confirmed this by asking for YOUR name. You the player, and when you save low and behold, that is the name that gets put on the save file. Not Kris, your name.
So, we are controlling Kris for this adventure. That is why he ‘knows’ things that he couldn’t possibly know about characters that we know from Undertale. Like Alphs and Undine being together or knowing San’s even though both characters don’t know what we are talking about. Interesting enough Kris has information that we the player don’t have. When you go to inspect the card for the reindeer and he asks you why it looks like we (the player) have never seen it before. Also cute reindeer from class seems to be weirded out by the way Kris has been acting, so we the player are controlling Kris’s actions, not Kris himself/herself. Also, both in Undertale and in this game, right after cut scenes Frisk/Chara/Kris will turn to face the camera, right at you. This being an RPG maker game where you have control over what happens to the character sprites, Toby did this deliberately.
And of course where Chara directly interacts with you at the end of a Genocide run. AND Kris looking at you with a knife in his hands, throwing out his soul, the culmination of his being, the thing that we controlled him; is now locked away. And we can’t do a damn thing about it. My point is that for us (the player) this IS a sequel. The game that comes next. “Undertale 2”. The next point of reference that we can see and can control. Or rather NOT control as the narrative says: our choices don’t matter. That brings us too:
Prequel: Flowy tells us over and over again that “In this world it’s kill or be killed!” If we substitute the word ‘world’ with ‘game’ we (the player) can infure that in this game our choices matter. That depending on how we act we could kill or save anyone or everyone depending on our choice. Deltarune tells us up front that “in this world, your choice does not matter” that is telling us that in this game, evens will play out no matter what we do. One of the most frustrating parts about a prequel is that it is just telling you stuff that happened before the main event.
For example: in a story about Alfred, batman’s butler (I cannot frikking believe they are making that a movie) it does not matter what he does or who he met along the way, by the end of the film, he will become the character we know. We end up with a bit of predestination. Who will be our Pennyworth in this situation?
Sans. And possibly Papyrus.
In Undertale it is established that the two skeleton brothers just showed up one day. No other explanation was given and it was just sort of hand waved away. Later we got all the connections to Gaster and that lead to some speculation about this vague origin. Now, here comes delta rune. We see Sans outside of what is clearly a building representing Grilbies. And if you listen carefully HE SOUNDS DIFFERENT! His little ‘he he he’s are speed up from what we heard in Undertale. I think the Sans we hear here is younger, more fast talking. A bit more inexperienced, not seeming to know as much as he did in the old game.
There is this lovely theory going around that Sans is actually a Darkner. That does answer an obvious question I didn’t think about until then. Where is Sans moving from??  Answer: The Dark Word you just spent so much time getting out of, duh. (Papyrus not so much but?)
So we have his origin and possible timeline:
Born in the dark world ->
came to Hometown (possibly through the same door you and Susie got through...) ->
Something terrible involving Gaster AND Kris gets him sent to the underground in an alternate timeline/world ->
Undertale happens.
That’s how he knows that ‘kids like you, should be burning in hell’. He has already seen one world be shattered by one kid in a striped shirt go crazy and kill everyone. And that leads us to:
Alternate Universe: The tale of two Asriel’s. Or three possibly. Everyone is trying to figure out where the heck the beginning bits and the end bits ‘fit’ into the timeline. They kind of skip over the part where you are in a completely different game for the entire time, you know hello? Ralsei is one of the three party members for most of the game and is reveled to be a sort of espy for Asriel. Susie (and possibly Kris) seemed to understand this due the vast amount of “??????????????????????????????” she gives after he takes off his hat. We know that Kris has a brother named Asriel matching up with the one from Undertale (honestly I thought for sure that meant the ending of Hunger tale was cannon). With the bizarre way everyone in Hometown has a counterpart in Undertale why would there need to be a second Asriel?
Let me introduce what I think Toby is going to do here: enter the multiverse. Now it could be that delta rune and Undertale are alternate timelines instead of straight up different universe. For now though I will be treating them as different universes. We have three ‘worlds’ that we know of: Undertale, the light world, and the dark world. If I had to guess the dark world is somehow a reflection of the light world so they also have characters that are similar to Undertale counterparts, see The Legend of Zelda: A Link between Worlds. The Light and Dark worlds also mirror of how the humans and monsters were on against one another.  We should be on the look out for characters in the dark world that matches with the ones in the og game.
I had a thought that maybe Sans is the Dark world counterpart of Papyrus so that instead of treating themselves as they same person they decided to be brothers instead.
I do wonder who the ‘Knight’ is that Lancers dad was talking about though.
Most of the rest of my thoughts are me just trying to project without much evidence. Until we know how Gaster and his followers fit into all of this I don’t think we can get much more out of it. Buy this being bizaro world the last one is:
Post-Genocide: Chara you poor creepy child. As everyone knows, in a genocide run, you kill everyone. Chara eventually takes over and kills you the player. Even though Flowey thinks you are the sibling from his childhood. You are not. You are the player controlling the character. The evil came from you. The vessel might become Frisk once you decide NOT to kill anybody but then Chara comes back and kills everyone anyway.
Now, we are in an alternate universe. Where our choices (the players not Kris’s) do. Not. Matter. And there is no Frisk, only a child who is this universes version of Chara. He did not die like in Undertale so now we live in a universe where that less than happy kid grows up into a less then talkative teenager. Where is Frisk then? Did Frisk’s own reasons for climbing the mountain (as hinted at by Asreil at the end of the game) never come to pass? Did just straight up die? We don’t know.
And having us act like a kid that may not exist in this universe really doesn’t sit well with Kris and he throws his will (US!) is in the cage. We told him about stuff. We knew about the other Universe and how things were different. And how little Kris was actually a guy called Frisk and he was a happy person that made friends and talked to people and didn’t kill anyone. If you didn’t do the Genocide ending anyway. Then you were…Chara.
Yeah, that’s the ending of delta rune ch1 guys. We see Kris throw us into a cage and since we were controlling him, he knows about the genocide ending. Since we told him how, he knows exactly what to do. A normal (if creepy) kid got possessed by some beings from some weird dimensions and knows exactly what to do with them. Pulls out a knife from nowhere and smiles (the kids smile, not one we made ) and his eyes glow red like in a photo he has seen through our eyes. The ones he is looking into as the view goes black. He has seen the ending and he has seen us and he knows he can kill us. All he has to do now is to kill everyone else. And he’ll do it too, because we can’t do anything to help BECAUSE OUR CHOICE DOES NOT MATTER!
TLDR: All four theories are true. If we look at them from four different characters.
The player – It’s a sequel because it is what you play after the 1st game.
Sans – Prequel because this is the world/timeline he comes from: see quicker voice
Asriel/Ralsei * – Are both au Asriel because of light/dark world and might have further indications that we should look out for  * and a bunch of other people
Kris – Post Genocide because we controlled him and now he knows that’s an option.

Why I like Undertale
How about this? How about a long post about things that I like, that have really shaky fandoms or fanbases, or otherwise have a rather dramatic background that puts some people off, and explain -- outside of that bull -- why I like it I often find many people become put off by certain games, ideas, shows, etc. due to the shitty things that the fans do, and that can leave a really bad taste in people’s mouth. So hey, maybe I can restore some wholesomeness.
So what’s cool about Undertale?
Well, it’s ambitious. Besides all the idiots yelling that it’s some hyper original, cutting-edge never-before-seen comment on humanity and gaming as a whole, and must be revered like a godsend -- Undertale is still an ambitious project. Toby Fox made a pet project essentially all by himself fueled by his childhood nostalgia and previous experiences, with kickstarter support, and somehow managed to make an extremely competent game with a clear narrative, simple but effective gameplay, and even a little personal introspection.
I mean, that’s my freaking DREAM, are you kidding me?
Don’t get me wrong, it’s nothing NEW, but it’s unique and It’s self-aware. You can clearly tell that it enjoys itself, which is what makes it so fun to play. Whether it be a genderfluid, silent, indetermenantly raced-protagonist that literally everyone can project on, to using determination and alternate universes to save, to having an unempathetic sociopathic flower literally crashing your game. When something like this can absolutely revel in itself, not just its world but its medium, you can’t help but be sucked along with it.
What else is Undertale? Well, it’s investive. One of its selling points is its multipath narrative, and how the game can completely change given your actions. Well, from a gaming stand point, you have near unending replayablity right there, and a game this big means that most of the time, you’re not just looking for any one specifically changed dialogue, but you’re witnessing a new story. Again, this is nothing absolutely new to video games, and it’s wrecked by the concept of spoilers. Personally, I don’t feel it devalues the replayability in any way. Years later, I know the game like the backside of my hand, but I spent the first few days after Undertale’s release watching the opening, and reading about the Pacifist, Genocide and Neutral paths, yet when I played them, it was a completely different experience because it was MY actions driving the narrative, and the fun of seeing what else I could do -- along with the story and characters gave me the ambition (or determination if you will) to see them through. And I still find those characters and story enough to warrant a replay every now and then. But I digress, your ability to appreciate spoilers is both out of my control, and not what this post is about.
Finally, Undertale is emotional. This is kind of a really personal one. I’m an extreme sucker for a good story, and re-experiencing that story is something I can do over and over again. Of course, I’m not gonna cry after the fifty-sixth replay, but I’m still emotionally empathic enough to feel my heart-strings tug when I save Asriel and he returns the Humans’ souls. I can still feel nostalgic about the amazing soundtrack and the feelings, experiences and character arcs that flow through them. It’s what make games long lasting to me. I can listen to the crescendo of ‘Reunited’ and the credits medley with the same feeling I felt the first time, and with the same compassion that I listen to say... ‘Tomorrow’ from To The Moon, and basically any credits theme from a Nintendo game.
It’s a little clingy of the past, I’ll admit. My entire relationship with videogames is one of reliving the first experience of joy, but hey... it’s what works for me.
And if it helps you in anyway to forget the effects of the shitty fans, Undertale is still there. Without all the memes and shit of the internet, Sans is still a funny and relatable -- if mysterious -- guy, Papyrus is still precious and lovable, Alphys is still nerdy but still tragic. It’s not the people online who hurt others over a game, or the idiots who overanalyse and meme-ify the contents (MatPat), and it’s not about the people who shout at you not to love everything because it’s actually racist/homophobic/etc.phobic. That’s not Undertale. Undertale is all those little good bits of someone’s hard work and love, that you can find compassion and empathy with.
That’s why I love Undertale.

but  ok seriously now i’m tired enough to ramble and not care i’m just gonna talk about undertale and how much it and its characters have changed my life for the better
ok so for the past few hours i’ve been scrolling through undertale blogs and i found a post and it just....clicked as to a big reason why i love it so much: the entire fucking game is about love. and not just romantic, it covers all kinds of love, the entire fucking point of the game at least to me is love. and this wont be coherent because it’s nearly 4 in the fucking morning and i need to sleep but it makes it one of the most heartwarming pieces of media i’ve ever seen (and become fully invested in as a result), the friendship between the characters is heartwarming, the sibling love between the skeleton brothers and royal family sblings is heartwarming, the parental love over frisk and asriel and chara is heartwarming (and heartbreaking...). and everything is so fucking human??? like i cant describe it properly really but i can read hundreds of books and not connect to characters like i do in this video game because everyone is so well rounded and have proper personalities rather than just a few character traits, it’s the way i’ve always wanted to be able to write, the personalities they have and the love they have for each other is beautiful and it’s everything to me because it’s so real???
also my favourite character is papyrus (followed by sans and undyne, who i love equally for different reasons i will probably ramble abt all three who knows??) and oh my god can i just say how much i love this character??? for being so positive all the fucking time and seeing the best in literally everyone he comes across and he’s so sweet but holy fuck it’s his optimism that really gets me because like....if you take away my depression (or not actually?? i get through it every time for a reason lmao) i’m actually also quite an optimistic person who’s able to see the good in literally everyone i meet (like i also genuinely don’t hate anyone) and sometimes it bites me in the ass, and people see it as stupid but papyrus has helped me so much to realise that it’s...not stupid??? i’m well aware that some people suck but sometimes they just need a chance?? and if they fuck up well, that’s it, but they deserve the chance right?? but also everyone treats papyrus like an innocent baby who needs to be protected, and as someone who is often talked down to because i’m optimistic and idealistic and empathetic and let my emotions guide me i can really see why papyrus is actually pretty insecure because being talked at like you’re a kid when you’re an adult feels awful!! the only thing i genuinely properly dislike about papyrus is how much he lies, how much he keeps a face up and pretends to know less than he does around his brother, how often he pretends to like things he doesnt to impress people. but like, even that’s ok because i get why he does it (lonely...) and he’s hardly gonna be flawless, there’s traits in everyone including myself that i dislike, and it feels so well rounded...like ppl often reduce his character to ‘his main character flaw is stupid’ and he’s not stupid but thats beside the point - it’s also not a character flaw like at all. and oh my god i just love him so much he brightens everything up, he’s who i aspire to be is2g (ok maybe just the core of who he is is inspiring to me - his kindess, empathy, optimism, seemingly endless). he also says things that doesnt make sense and i do the same thing, i think weirdly and my friends often ask me what the hell i’m talking about, and i jsut connect to him so much??? so so much
and fuck fuck fuck i really wanna talk about papyrus and sans because like....ok as a character i love sans, he’s my second favourite along with undyne, i do connect with him less but he’s very interesting (he’s a little overrated and mischaracterised by the fandom sometimes but i’ll let that go for now), and m a n do i connect to his laziness lmao (it’s not just caused by his depression i will fight u on this, i don’t think it helps obviously but as someone who’s depressed AND lazy i can relate on a personal level to him in that sense), but he is funny - not necessarily the awful skeleton puns but like in the ‘oh if you insist on prying me away from my work’ kinda funny, snarky asshole - and i actually really like that he’s a bit of an asshole, he likes to screw with people and he’s won’t fight you unless you’re literally going to end the entire world along with every single timeline (again though, i can really sympathise and get why he’s like this even tho i don’t really relate because he is so fucking well written), but i love that he loves papyrus so fucking much. like i’m a massive sucker for strong sibling relationships (the baudelaire orphans, the way brothers) and this just...oh man, i’m not the biggest fan of the way sans is portrayed in the fandom either but when people who agree with me on that argue that sans doesn’t even care about his brother it infuriates me because that’s...so....wrong??? papyrus is his entire fucking world, the game make that very clear, p much all he talks about is how great his brother is and it’s so cute and blindingly obvious that he means every word he says about that (even if that’s the only thing he doesn’t fuckin lie about lmao...). but i also love this relationship because they balance each other out so much, papyrus tries his best to get sans to get his life together - nagging him constantly, getting him an actual job therefore getting him out of the house, etc - but i think papyrus is also an optimist to sans’ pessimism and nihilism (for lack of a better word - depression i guess) and i think it helps sans quite a lot, or at least is something that makes him genuinely happy when he’s lost all hope. and on the flip side, sans is constantly saying really little things to pick papyrus back up when his mask of self confidence is slipping, and it’s very subtle - the main one i can think of atm is (paraphrasing) ‘me? right about something? come on bro’ or something after papyrus shows self doubt about his puzzles in the genocide route - that’s one of the more obvious ones i think but it’s there p much throughout, and god help my lack of being able to explain things because i can’t put it into words as to why i think this or why i love it so much but i think it really helps papyrus emotionally. THEN you’ve got the bad points, like the lies they constantly tell to each other and how they never fuckign open up to each other (they just project their emotional problems onto you lmao) and ohhh man the relationship between those two.... i could go on forever but i’ll shut up now
i’ve been rambling for half an hour so i’ll keep the thing about undyne shorter hopefully (nearly half 4 in the morning...fuck... .and i have shit to do tomorrow like this essay.....god) but oh man oh MAN i really love her as well?? so passionate and so PROUD of it, she’s so completely unafraid of being herself (so unlike two of the people she’s closest to - papyrus and alphys), she’s such a fun character and i relate to how passionate she is and can i also just say i LOVE hers and papyrus’s friendship nearly on par with papyrus and sans’s sibling relationship, funnily enough she also treats him like a kid like sans does but she’s very kind and it’s obvious that she cares deeply for papyrus, and their phone calls made me laugh so much (the fucking hot pants one actually made me cry with laughter, it was brilliant), she’s so much fun i love her so much
im leaving it there but this fucking video game it’s actually changed me for the better it’s quite literally my favourite thing on the planet atm, it’s gorgeous and i love it with every inch of my heart bless this fucking game i cant even put into words how much i love it it’s just!!! my god!!!!!
i genuinely havent felt like this about something since i got into mcr over 6 years ago, if that doesnt say how much i love it then nothing will tbh
