a weird thing is that we got waves of people going "who cares if its cringe or youre annoying! have fun!" but no one really learned how to accept the fact that some people will find you annoying or think your art or your work or posts or anyrhing sucks and thats ok. rather it just became a weird "if people think youre annoying theyre just morally bad. let people enjoy things!". like no i think this yes man only biome sucks and people are allowed to not like artstyles and shows and media and other things

Bit telling that for years and years evangelical religious extremists have been allowed on university campuses with their bullhorns and horrific imagery where they harass students into physical altercations and when students complain to the university’s administration they just shrug their shoulders citing freedom of speech but when those same tuition-paying students start protesting against war and genocide they call SWAT

Why I think ChuChu is used as a distraction and a metaphor/why I think people need to view Utena in the same way they view Surrealist paintings

Something that I don’t think enough people understand about Utena Revolutionary girl, is that ever frame is meant to be viewed under a classical art eye.

This simple still, a lot of people will discount it. Think that it’s not important to Utena’s Character. This is a moment in which Utena is doubting herself, and the show is trying to purposely distract your attention to ChuChu, all to throw off your perception of Utena as a character. This universe doesn’t want you to view Utena as anything other than a justified, righteous Prince. At least for now. The show itself wants to devalue Utena’s doubt in herself, in favor of projecting her security in herself. And you might say, “Hey that’s crazy talk!” But that’s the thing, this show tried to distract you on purpose multiple time. All in an effort to trick your perception, in the same way that the characters perceptions are being tricked.

ChuChu is seen as a joke character, yet he shows very early on that there was something abnormal with this specific dress. The packets he’s holding are humidity/moister absorption packets. It is a visual premonition of what is yet to come, as Anthy’s dress dissolves from moisture. Yet the show is purposefully trying to make the viewer feel as though it’s unimportant because it’s the “mascot” “pet” figure.

This scene as well, ChuChu is not only used as a physical barrier, but a mental barrier. Even though this scene is very serious, showing Utena and her toxic counterpart when they first meet. These characters are meant to be foils of each other, showing not only the worst parts of Utena’s character, but also how she differs from what she could be. And how her choices could lead her to a similar fate. Utena is still climbing upwards, while her counterpart has reached the precipice of what he can be. She is free to continue moving forward, while he is stuck. And yet, the scene is still trying to distract you with the silliness of ChuChu, almost as if to relieve some of the tension.

As the show goes on, it uses ChuChu as less of a distraction tool, and leans more into what ChuChu represents conceptually. Utena, in this moment, is projecting onto ChuChu. She is worried about what Anthy is doing, but doesn’t want or know how to admit it. So Utena projects those fears onto ChuChu, who is this moment being used as a vehicle for Utena’s internal feelings.

But anyways, this is the kind of stuff I feel like people miss when they watch Utena, because of how they are viewing it. People judge it off of anime standards, when really it should be judged and interpreted as a piece of surrealist artwork. Look at the camera view, the positioning of stills, the distance and stance of characters. It is much more complex than most give it credit for.

this was a comment on one of my post from a recent live event. it was photos of joyful queer buckaroos celebrating together and proving love is real through creation, community, and a trot of love. most important I AM LITERALLY IN PHOTO AS A REAL FLESH AND BLOOD HUMAN

it got me thinking about how DEEP AND VICIOUS the irony poisoning of these early internet communities goes. the way buds like this cannot fathom someone just being a sincere person unrelated to their OWN old days of cynical posting. it is fascinating, and i will admit, sad too

despite a DECADE of work, countless live events, 350 tinglers written well before large language models were a thing, there are still people who cannot imagine someone like me could exist. it is a strange place to be. not just part of me, but my entire EXISTENCE is often gatekept

it is easy to say ‘well chuck your art IS strange’ but honestly i think it is more than that. magical realism is common. there are stories about dinosaurs and bigfeet and unicorns. this scoundrel reaction is about two unspoken things: my art is neurodivergent, and my art is queer

heres the thing: I WILL BE FINE. what concerns me is not an issue of MYSELF, it is a concern for the other young outsider buckaroos who see comments like this one and think ‘is that what they will say if i express MY unique way? will i be dehumanized like this at every turn?'

i will be honest, i cannot say that WONT happen, but i CAN say this: for as deep as this irony poisoning goes, it is slowly dying. the way i was treated at the start of my career is LIGHTYEARS DIFFERENT from the way i am treated now. there is a massive shift towards sincerity

BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY. to young artists trotting up, the things that i am harassed over and doubted for and made fun of for are NOT tangental to what has made me successful, THEY ARE LITERALLY THE SAME THINGS THAT HAVE MADE ME SUCCESSFUL. YES I AM STRANGE, WHAT OF IT?

the things that you tuck away for fear of a review that says ‘there is a PROBLEM with this art because it has always been done another way’ THOSE ARE YOUR SUPERPOWERS. the gatekeepers want you to tuck those parts of yourself away because THEY TUCKED AWAY THOSE PART OF THEMSELVES

never forget that your unique way is PURE UNFILTERED 100 PERCENT ROCKET FUEL. it will stick out (maybe, if you are lucky, scoundrels will even say that someone like you could never actually be real), but sticking out isnt so bad when you are waving the flag of love.

Man, even the smallest of side character in Dungeon have such heart and impact.

So in chapter 78, the elves (led by Flamella) have an opportunity to kill Laios. They believe that he is certain to fall to the Winged Lion and doom them all, and they have told everyone else as much. Laios friends and acquaintances, though conflicted, stand by.

The orcs are the first to protest. They are ready to fight for Laios (and their own best chance for freedom, through him). But no one else takes action.

Until...

Oh hey, it's Doni!! From what, like... chapter 3?? That's cute. It's even kind set up, since you can see him and Fionil in the chapter before this, reacting to the news that Laios defeated the Mad Sorcerer.

It's a small detail, but you can even see that Fionil has her hood up. Probably that's tied to the extra info on her from the Adventurer's Bible - she's a Canary spy.

Wait. Hold on.

Fionil is a spy. If that news comes out, she risks both her ties to Doni and possible arrest or punishment from the elves. She has been hiding out and trying to stay under the radar. But despite this, when Doni comes forward to vouch for Laios, so does she.

So yeah. THAT is the context of these panels:

That's why she's crying here. That's why its notable that she lowers her hood.

Fionil puts her life at risk by coming forward and standing by Doni. And it's these two that spur everyone else into action. Doni and Fionil save Laios, and Laios saves Marcille, and then they and the party go on to save the entire world.

I'm proud of her...
