Let's Talk About Hazbin Hotel
Just a casual review. Hazbin Hotel's been coming up on my Tumblr dash a lot, and there's been some controversy around it. So I decided to give it a try.
(Note: I haven't engaged with anything that came out before its Amazon Prime debut)
To summarize: it's pretty okay. The animation is great and the songs are bangers. The plot is pretty solid; there are some hiccups but in only eight episodes it does pretty well in world building.
Though I guess that's where we have our first problem. Eight 23 minute episodes doesn't mean a lot of time for our characters to be fleshed out. Sure Angel Dust, Husk, Sir Pentious, Alastor, and even Lucifer get their moments. And don't get me wrong, that's great. But I feel a lot of that could have been geared towards our main characters: Charlie and Vaggie.
Let me just say, I love Charlie and I think she's well-written for the most part. She's flawed, but wants the best for the people around her. And that's great. That being said, it doesn't feel like we've gotten a real deep dive into who she is. What gave her the idea to redeem sinners in the first place? How has she interacted with the people of hell prior to the hotel? We know she helped Vaggie when she was injured, did that come before or after her idea for the hotel?
(If any of this is answered in the pilot, I'm sorry. But there's a good chance new fans like myself didn't watch the pilot either)
The most introspection we get into her character are Husk's offhand comment about her bleeding heart who focuses on others' problems instead of her own and Rosie mentioning her "moxie." And those things are being told to us, not shown to us. It's hard to view her as complex, though I am holding out hope that we'll get more into her in the next season especially with Lilith's inevitable return. I'm eager to see her grow more as a leader.
(I also hope they explore her temper. For me, that's when she's at her most dynamic. Feminine rage ftw)
Now, onto Vaggie.
I'm sorry, but I really can't get into her character at all. She's mean and untrusting and... that's it? Unlike Charlie she doesn't seem to have any defining character traits. No goals or aspirations that don't have to do with Charlie's. And even then, she doesn't display a lot of confidence in her, consistently doubting Charlie's input and even outright refusing that some of the patrons can change. It's like she doesn't actually believe that sinners can be redeemed and only puts effort into the hotel at all for Charlie.
(This isn't a problem with Vaggie per se, but her encouraging Charlie to confront Valentino felt so off to me. She's supposed to be more levelheaded and rational than Charlie, so wouldn't she know that Charlie doesn't really hold that much power? Her and Lucifer are basically figureheads, the Overlords are the ones that really run Hell. Considering she's so distrustful of Alastor, Vaggie would know that right? So why push Charlie into being assertive against one?)
And this is a direct contradiction to what is being told to us about her character. She, as an exterminator, showed mercy to a sinner and paid the price for it. If she believed that the child she spared was worth sparing, she should have some optimism that sinners deserve a second chance. But outside of hyping Charlie up, that's never shown to us.
Even in Scrambled Eggs- an episode that was centered around her- doesn't tell us much about her. Just that she's a semi-competent fighter who learned trust the "hard way." But nothing about her growing closer to the residents- despite being entrusted to teach them trust- just a song about her love and devotion to Charlie.
And I know that this is supposed to be her parallel to Carmilla and that the duet sets up their meeting later. But Vaggie's goals being so focused on Charlie and not the hotel or the residents means that there's such a disconnect here. Carmilla is singing for her daughters (and even Zestial), but it's also for all of Hell. She wants to keep them out of unnecessary war. Her goal has different facets to it while Vaggie's is extremely one-way.
To put it simply: Vaggie is boring.
And it's because of these things that I really can't get into Chaggie. It's... Okay. I guess. There's so little focus on it that outside of the reveal that Vaggie's an angel, it doesn't hold a lot of relevance throughout the show, good or bad. They could have been best friends and nothing would have changed.
If I'm being completely honest, Charlie has more interesting relationships with everyone else: Alastor, Lucifer, Angel, and even Emily who wasn't even on screen with her for that long.
(Unapologetically a RoyalHalo shipper. Also an Emily stan)
Speaking of Emily, I love what they're setting her up for. It seems like she'll either Fall like Lucifer and join Charlie in Hell or take over Heaven from Sera and work with Charlie to bring a better system. Either way, I'm excited for what they'll do with her.
Although I have to say, even though I love You Didn't Know, I do have some things to say about it and the whole trial scene.
As I said, the Hazbin Hotel songs are good. There's no denying that. But a few of them- like YDK- kind of hinder the plot. There's so much going on in this scene- so many important revelations- that it being a song I feel undercuts that. Like Emily finding out about Extermination Day and confronting Sera about it could have used a lot more attention. Her and Charlie aligning themselves together, while freaking amazing to listen to, kind of comes out of nowhere. Even- especially- Vaggie being revealed as an angel to Charlie is a lot less intense being sung through a song.
(It still slaps though)
But a lot of songs also have the opposite effect. More Than Anything, Poison, and Loser Baby convey exactly what they're trying to. You feel the emotion and flaws of these characters, you feel the pure connection/strife.
(Songs like Hell's Greatest Dad and Respectless are for fun and do help move the story along. They also give us a glimpse into the characters. I could do without some of them, especially because that time could be better spent, but they're still fun to listen to and watch. Respectless is so fucking good man)
I'm excited to see more of Lilith and her relationships with Charlie and Lucifer. It's implied during MTA that she was the one fostering the distance between Lucifer and Charlie. I wonder if that was intentional or just through Charlie's/Lucifer's POV. Also, her being gone at the same time Alastor was is definitely hinting at her being the one who has him on a leash.
Sir Pentious in heaven🥹 I don't have a lot to say about it, it just made me happy
All in all... Pretty good. Enough to keep me engaged. Looking forward to the next season👍🏾

Had a funky idea.. what about a Charlie x Pinkie Pie like! Reader? :)
Haha! Awwww! This is my first time ever trying out Charlie! For real, Charlie would absolutely love Pinkie Pie and we know it! I wanted to do romantic but for some reason, I can’t really get anything out unlike what I wanted so sorry, this is solely platonic!
Charlie Morningstar- Balloon Soul
Tumblr media
Charlie is a sweetheart. She loves the concepts of positivity, sunshine, rainbows and cupcakes. Anything good has her one hundred percent attention. So when she meets you, the embodiment of joy and friendship growing, she automatically befriends you and learns about you
She doesn’t understand how you’re a Sinner. You’re beaming with hyperactivity and happiness. Yet, here you are. Instead of being a client, she hires you to work at her Hotel since you’re simply perfect at spreading redemption with your good-hearted but energetic character
Charlie will happily attend any party you throw; outside of the Hotel or inside the Hotel. She also relies on you to be the party planner and be the general activity planner since you’re really creative and capable at organising big events. Even better than her girlfriend, Vaggie. You become a valuable member of the Staff in no time!
Charlie also enjoys telling you her favourite sweet flavours because you’ll come in with cupcakes or a big cake, all for her! The fact you remember absolutely everything about her makes her heart flutter. She adores you, you’re basically another version of her… just a bit more talkative, jokey and loud but the personality you two share is why she likes you so much, you bond so well with people
Charlie is so close to you, you’re basically her right hand lady, that her girlfriend, Vaggie, gets jealous of you and she has to clear it up with Vaggie to ensure nothing goes back inbetween her best friend and her love
Charlie really appreciates how much of a sweetheart you are as well. You’re a very good friend, warm-hearted and sympathetic whilst working hard to make people smile so when she feels down, you’d make sure she is laughing and smiling again in no time. She loves this
Charlie is the first one there and the last one out of anything you arrange; farewell party, we succeeded party, birthday party, couple anniversary party, we redeemed sinners party! Anything, she’s dolling herself up to get your approval and she adores how cute your party-accessorised ball gown is
Charlie actually turns to you for emotional support. Believe it or not. You may be hyper and childish but you’re actually really emotionally well-adjusted and with your backstory of being a dull, miserable child that found happiness through colour. She looks to you for advice when she needs it inside a sad dark place
Charlie also leans on you heavily, you’re her right hand and she knows you won’t mock her in any fashion. Suspect her to rant to you about her problems with her relationship with Vaggie(rest easy Alastor) and there is very little times that she doesn’t take what you offer her
Charlie likes your hair… it makes no sense but she loves brushing and tying it up for you. It’s a big bubbly mess but it’s a beautiful bubbly mess. You two can trade doing hairstyles together early in the morning and it’s precious. Charlie feels more pretty when her best friend and her girlfriend say she is
Charlie is quite good at handling how talkative and upbeat you are. You talk as much as she does and therefore, she is really the only person in the Hotel that can tolerate how much of a high-spirit chatterbox you are. She enjoys it since you act like she is your younger sister, she is fine with you always chatting
Charlie likes how cute your Hellborn alligator friend is, Gummy. It’s a adorable fang-less baby alligator that is clamped on your hair and she’ll happily help you care for him when you can’t and she is getting use to the feeling of a small Hellborn alligator clung onto her ponytail by his tough gummy jaws… it’s not as uncomfortable as she thought
“Leitora! Leitora! Here! Here! Look at this balloon animal I made! It’s just like the one you made for me! Do you think Vaggie would like it? Do you like it? I like it! Are you proud of it?”

Lucifer x !FemReader : My old friend
Hello everyone, it is my first time writing this, i hope it will be good enough, have fun! This fan art isn't mine. Full credits to the amazingly talented artist/creator.
Tumblr media
It has been thousands of years since evil began.
Lucifer, whose pride blinded him, attempted to dethrone the creator, only to ultimately fail and be banished from Paradise.
Lilith, who refused to submit to Adam, in turn fled from this magical place, but which hides many facades.
Yet few people know that with them, a third person flew out of Paradise. And even rarer are people who know the cause, 3 to be precise.
However, behind this unusual act lie very dark secrets, seen as…
-Can you stop, Vag'? You're giving me a headache.
The young woman turned her head towards the source of this execrable voice, a spider who was visibly lying carefree on the sofa, arms behind her head, a bored expression on her face.
Refraining from answering him, she continued:
Tragic, some thought it was another rebellious woman, others a fallen angel because of a serious crime, but that wasn't logical, what's worse than to confront the creator?"
-That doesn't help all of us, the young woman noted, running her hand through her hair, frustrated.
-It would be beneficial to have her on our side, especially if she has such a significant influence on the world of the living and beyond, Charlie concluded thoughtfully.
-But she hid from the world, living as a hermit. Many think it's a myth, but given what's been happening lately, I believe it's much more present than sinners think.
Vaggie rubbed her temples, trying to come up with an idea.
-Who the hell are you talking about? I hate it when you pretend to be Sherlock and leave me like the old cookie in the back of the cupboard.
-Are you interested in what we do? retorted Vaggie sarcastically
-No, more about why you were busting my balls, joked Angel.
-You don't even have one, asshole, mumbled quietly Husk, taking a sip of his cheap booze.
-Want to check~? It is free for you kitty cat.
-Not even for a thousand balls, growled quietly Husk, who was beginning to lose his patient.
-Ouuh finally a price there is progress, Daddy, the spider sent him a kiss
Alastor, who was reading a book by the fireplace, decided to speak
-Charlie, Darling, you seem concerned about this person Let me see…
He seemed surprised for a moment, before smiling more, if possible.
-My my, what a terrible coincidence. The person you are looking for is one of the most sought after. Didn't Lucifer tell you about Lady (Y/N)?
-Um… We're not exactly talking about all that-
“Daddy issues,” Husk muttered.
Alastor continued:
-As reported in this document, she flew away shortly after your parents. She was a person living in Heaven, she was not human, but not an angel entirely though, she had two pairs of wings, although she is the appearance of a mortal, yet she had her own power, not to be underestimated. She embodied humor, justice and determination. In short, all these things that are way too boring-
-Cut it short, Alastor, Vaggie said, snapping her fingers.
-But when Lucifer challenged God, she did not follow him, not because she had to beat him, but because he knew just as well as she did that what he was doing was wrong. For the first time in her life she felt an immense disappointment in the love he had once inspired in her, and the semblance of a relationship that was perhaps tending to end disappeared with the appearance of the first demon, your father, Charlie.
However, you are aware that shortly after the creation of Lilith, she quickly became friends with your mother, and when she flew away from Paradise, and she learned the cause, she entered in a black anger, so black that Gabriel had difficulty in containing it, Until then, she had always been obedient, never contesting the decisions, which were of infallible Justice, but this departure had torn away part of her herself. She confronted the lord, she tried to rally the others to her cause, but nothing changed. Disappointed, she left that place, and no one ever saw her again.
There was a heavy silence for a moment, before Angel said:
-So…Is she still a virgin?
Vaggie rolled her eyes before Charlie had an idea:
I'm sure she's not that far away. Maybe I should ask my father to contact her again. She must care about him, at least I hope so, and if I convince her, Gabriel won't be able to object!
Vaggie refrained from adding a comment, she knew it was too good to be able to do it, but in front of her girlfriend's adorable face, she couldn't refuse anything.
______________________________________________________________
-No, Lucifer said firmly, before Charlie could even finish his idea.
-But dad-
-End of discussion, I don't want to hear anything, he turned around and mechanically squeezed the rubber duck in his hand, like an anti-stress ball.
Lucifer seemed elsewhere, deep in thought. His friend, his old friend…
.
.
.
“Luciferrrrr!” A burst of joy appeared as she walked towards him, a smile on her lips, a book in her hands.
Lucifer as usual had a lyre in his hands. He looked up at Y/N and smiled.
One discussion led to another, he shared his ideas about the mortal world, while she agreed with some and shared her opinion on others. They would sometimes just stay silent, or she would read aloud from a book, and he would then accompany her with his lyre.
Such a beautiful memory…
.
.
.
Why Lucifer?! Why did you do this?
This same friend was there with her eyes filled with tears, disappointed in him.
Lucifer looked down. One mistake, just one mistake, had caused him to lose those he considered family, and his closest friend.
He wanted to tell her that it was just a misunderstanding, that it was for the best, but the damage was already done.
He took Lilith's hand and without a word, left for their new home.
The young woman, in tears, could only watch them leave, the man she loved and her friend, without being able to do anything, because her principles prevented her. Gabriel placed a comforting hand on her shoulder, and said nothing. If she knew, he couldn't imagine how she would have reacted
.
.
.
-Dad?
Lucifer seemed to come out of his thoughts and focused on a family portrait. Lilith was already gone, after their separation he only had his daughter left, and after a second of thought he sighed and said:
-I'll see what I can do…
-It's true? Oh thank you Dad, thank you thank you thank you!, cried Charlie enthusiastically.
She took him in her arms, and Lucifer said to himself that finally, if having a hug from his daughter meant having to seek the 7 rings of Hell and even the beyond, he would do it without complaining.
Now all that remained was to find it, the most complicated part…
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lucifer, Charlie and the hotel members thought for several days, using all their knowledge and powers to find her. If she was neither in Hell, nor in Heaven, or even in the mortal world, she must be between the latter options-
Lucifer suddenly had an idea, remembering a conversation they had shared long ago, and he cast an incantation, which opened a portal to a world- no, a unique place, so messy and blurry, and yet so… familiar, as if he were…
“In the middle of a dream,” Charlie whispered softly. The rest of the team followed her, looking around curiously. Lucifer asked himself so many questions, was it a place where souls rested between life and death? He did not know it. After all, the soul left the body for a while when it slept, that would explain the place.
-Who are you? I sense human souls, but something else…
They saw several women advancing, of great beauty, similar to fairies, but armed, ready to defend themselves, if it was not for another who stopped them by raising her hand, she advanced slowly, and Lucifer recognized her completely. right now.
-(Y/N)..Lucifer seemed upset to see her, and tried to pull himself together by talking to himself. "Ok, Ok. It's going to be okay buddy, you can do it, you can do it", When he met her gaze, he lost all his courage and hid behind Charlie.
-Dad!
-What? I-I'm just covering your back Charlie.
-At least what I thought of you is true, you're just a sissy Lucifer, Alastor sneered.
You looked at him for a moment, the man you had loved for thousands of years, it was..strange. You didn't know whether you should greet him or hit him.
-Lucifer, what is the honor of this visit worth to me? In 10,000 years you have never had the decency to come visit me.
Sarcasm. Something unusual about you, he couldn't help but admire you. Your two pairs of wings were now grey, but your eyes were still this soft (e/c) shade, but now full of resentment, and perhaps.. mockery?
-And you, you must be his daughter, mhh?
You moved closer to her and observed her suspiciously, while she was sweating profusely, and Vaggie seemed on the edge on attacking you, and to her surprise, you smiled widely and took her in your arms, with surprising strength.
-My lord you are his carbon copy, so pretty~, you squish her cheek cheeks and gush about her, while she laughs awkwardly.
Everyone was stunned by how fast the tension dissipates, and the women behind you giggle, seemingly aware by how fast your emotions tend to change. Lucifer smiles, maybe he still had a chance..
-But you seem so polite, unlike some, you cast a dark look at Lucifer, and greeted the others with a sympathetic and curious look, their offering to sit down for a while to talk.
...maybe not finally.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
-If I understood everything, you created a hotel to rehabilitate sinners… and are trying to convince Heaven, is that right?
She nodded and Lucifer tried to add something, but you stopped him:
-I don't speak with traitors and liars, especially if they forget to send me a life message for eons.
Lucifer doesn't say anything wanting to make anything worse. He knew he was wrong, and sighed heavily.
(Y/N)-1 Lucifer-0.
-Damn, this girl is awesome, Angel whispered excitedly.
Vaggie continued:
-Lady (Y/N), you still have decent relationship with heaven.Could you try talking to some highers-up about it? Like Gabrie-
-No, this thing is no longer part of my circle of close friends, I can still try to talk about it again with Sera and Emily, but I can't do anything with the other weirdo.
Charlie felt hopeless, and she took your hands and looked at you with a miserable expression.
-I beg you, you must speak to him, my people are dying every year at the hands of the exorcists, and I-I cannot stand by and do nothing. Can you try..?
At his beaten puppy look, you widened your eyes, it was exactly-
Please don't tell them where I was, Lucifer pleaded with adorable eyes. You sighed but smiled, nodding your head.
-Well, i will. But I'm not promising anything though-
-Thank you thank you thank you, she hugged you, and you hugged her back with a smile.
Lucifer felt his heart beat faster, these two women who are precious to him have finally met, and got along better than he expected.
Now all he had to do was sort out one last problem.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Explanations were made. You listened patiently, and after a while you answered:
-Why Lucifer, didn't you tell me before? I-I thought I was your friend.
Lucifer held her gaze, and for the first time in millennia he took his courage in both hands and took hers:
-I didn't want to see your disappointed look, I know I made a mistake, but I only thought about doing the right thing. And I-
-You got scared?
He nodded, and you sighed:
-I don't blame you, at least not anymore.
He raised his eyes, feeling a bit of hope, and feeling Charlie's encouraging look, he continued:
-So, can we try again? I mean our relationship- Well our friendship!
He blushed slightly and you chuckled softly:
-Yes, always Lucifer.

Howdy, Chrys! If you still doing the character meme thing could you please do this with Charlie perhaps :^>?
Yep, I'm still taking requests for that meme! Thanks for sending this in!
Send me a character and I’ll list:
Favourite thing about them: The growth in her confidence and her leadership qualities over the course of the series. Charlie starts out wanting so badly to help people and make their lives better, but she's so concerned with being "nice" that she struggles with the idea that she might have to assert herself to achieve her dreams. It feels too mean. She gradually learns that she needs to stop waiting on the sidelines armed with nothing but good intentions: she needs to take a more direct approach, take responsibility for her people, and fight for her loved ones even if she has to be "mean" about it. That's why I really like "Ready For This," because it's what Charlie's character arc has been building to all along - acknowledging the privileged position she holds and finally feeling more comfortable with what she can do about it.
Least favourite thing about them: She's over 200 years old, and she's only now decided on the Hotel idea? What took her so long? How many Exterminations had there been before then? How many of her people died before she decided to act? And how sheltered was she if she never knew how corrupt Heaven was until she saw it in "Welcome to Heaven"? I think Charlie should have been younger so the audience wouldn't ask awkward questions like this.
Favourite line: "Just because someone is dead, it doesn't mean they can't resolve to change their ways!"
brOTP: I mentioned in a previous meme response about Angel Dust that I like the friendship Charlie has with him. I like seeing the way they both try to help and protect each other - they don't always get things right, but they're trying because they care about each other, and that's nice to see. Also, I like the moment in the pilot when Angel teases Charlie about the lack of guests at the hotel, and then stops because she looks so sad. He can't bring himself to be mean to her because she's too nice.
I also enjoyed watching Charlie and Emily team up during "You Didn't Know". They're pretty similar characters, both very cheerful and hopeful and keen to see the best in people, with the only difference being where they live. I hope we get to see more of "Charmily" collaborating in Season 2! (Because it did always bother me that Emily promised to help Charlie and then didn't really do anything in the finale.)
OTP: Chaggie! I haven't posted about them much (mainly because my brain's been focused on the hurt/comfort potential of Huskerdust), but that doesn't mean I don't like the pairing! A developing romance like Huskerdust may have more drama, but sometimes it's just nice to see an established couple who are clearly comfortable in each other's company and trust each other.
Charlie and Vaggie have a fun dynamic because they're different but similar - if that makes sense? One's an optimist with occasional scary moments, and the other's a grump with occasional sweet moments, and I like both those character tropes, so I suppose it was inevitable that I would end up shipping Chaggie. They look cute together!
nOTP: Charlie and Valentino. That arm-licking scene? Ew. Ew. Ewwww.
Random headcanon: Charlie has had extensive First Aid training, which she's used to patch up wounded sinners after Exterminations. If Angel ever comes back from work looking particularly messed up, it'll be Charlie who gives him the medical attention he needs.
Unpopular opinion: This isn't unpopular per se, because I also saw @gabrielsbubblegumbitch make a post about this, but ... why is Charlie only working on a small Hotel, a passion project, when she's got the power and authority to effect much wider-ranging changes in Hell that would ultimately make people's afterlives more bearable? I understand her fervent desire to save sinners from Extermination, because Exterminated sinners are gone forever, and that's tragic for her - but what is she doing to improve things between purges?
For example, when will she sort out the cruel and exploitative Overlord system? Charlie showed up at Angel's workplace once to try some "aggressive kindness" with Valentino ... and then I guess she never tried to help her friend again? Huh?
Look, I get the message that "Masquerade" was trying to convey. Sometimes, people are in situations that are too big and complex for you to handle alone, and you need to know when to step back because a hasty intervention might only make things worse. But that message doesn't really work with a character like Charlie Morningstar, because she's the Princess of Hell and could totally put Valentino in his place if she wanted.
It frustrates me that the plot thread of "Charlie potentially freeing Angel from Valentino" was never brought up again. Had Season 1 been given more episodes, the series could have expanded on that and given Charlie more to do. Maybe she could have collaborated with Angel on a scheme. I'm not saying Angel's contract issue needed to be resolved in the first season; I just wish it had been fleshed out more.
Song I associate with them: "Persephone" by MJQ x EmpahP (performed by Daina). It's about a woman born into privilege who feels uneasy about her position. The lyrics mention "sharing the air of kings" and being "an angel with borrowed wings." And there's even a section about needing to fight and being lucky if she makes it out alive, which calls to mind the battle with the Exorcists in the finale. This song just seems right for Charlie.
Favourite picture of them:

so wanted to post a fast review of a series, I did not expect to like, people I followed pretty much called it a trashfire and there were jokes all over social media over the quality of it's story and it's lackluster animation, so I went in with the mindset not too expect too much and well...
it''s pretty good?
wait no wat, it's pretty good, i myself am confused I enjoyed it alot, did I watched the same show as the people who hated it?
Tumblr media
don't get me wrong the series has problems, the swearing gets a bit tirdesome and the pacing is all over the place. The show takes a lesson from spiderverse and lego movies by not giving its viewer any room to breath, Every scene is important to one of the major plot threads, episode 4 is a triggering episode that you should read upront on, that i can't comment on. The character desings are a hit and miss and not all the jokes land. But when the show wants to tell it's story, wants you to get to know the characters you can't help but get so invested and wanting to learn more. The different plot threads that it starts are all major good that you want to keep following the story. But what I like most about the show that it's not a cast of a ''nuclear'family or a group of high school teenagers or a group of super heroes. No it's a weird mixed of very troubling (sinners) adults in a found-family situation.
The story is about the Princess of Hell named Charlie who opened a Hotel in the hope she could redeem Sinners so they can go to heaven and avoid slaughter by the angels, that happens once a year, but due to angel Adam (yes that Adam) being a dick, the slaugher will happen again in just six MONTHS.
and that's all i need to tell you, a big theme about this series is Redemption and that it does it nicely well. The interaction between the characters is also majorly fun and let's just say there is a reason the Ost of Hazbin Hotel has been trending on Spotify it's freaking good.
The pacing doesn't bother me too much myself because Hazbin remindds me of a musical/stageplay and I love those.
Tumblr media
(the Seramyu musicals are btw really good. give them a watch too)
regardless if you don't like HH that's all fine but I think one of the best things about it' being a hit, (it's one of the top shows on prime in over thirty countries) that in a time where big studios play it safe by having most adult cartoons follow the simpsons formula, try to copy the rick and morty style of storytelling, or in case of Disney and Marvel today, with Bob Iger saying they be focussing on big franchises and sequels for now, trying to shift the blame on original stories on why their movies aren't doing good. (despite them not even promoting said og movies and making the writers play it super SAFE) we have Hazbin Hotel, an animated show for adults that is so Unapologetic, Queer! Doesn't follow any save formula, is such an obvious passion project and is a huge hit! Last time I was this impressed was with Netflix Pluto and Nimona. HH is also a series I would love to see on stage! Hazbin Hotel is not for everyone but I would suggest give it a chance instaed of letting social media decide for you. (which i know you can disgard my post too, but I just wanted to say, I'm glad me and my friends watched this series and just ignored most of the hate, because we all enjoyed it and are playing the songs on repeat lolol)

a stray cat
Characters: Alastor, Husk, Angel Dust, Charlie
Pairing: Alastor & Husk, Husk/Angel Dust (implied), Charlie/Vaggie (mentioned)
Summary: Husk tended to fall asleep in places Alastor had accesses to. So naturally, to wake the cat up, he’d use an air horn. However, it’s been a few days since he found Husk asleep anywhere. He overheard a conversation between Husk and Angel Dust talking about Husk performing more magic on Angel this night. The implication made Alastor upset and he can’t quite figure out why.
A/N: Enjoy this piece of something I have written. Also, if any of you have something for Husk and Alastor in mind, do tell me. I’d love to get my grabby hands onto any- and everything.
____________________________________________
Alastor came to understand that Husk was what one would call a stray cat. The only place that Husk would stay at consistently would be the bar, and he wasn’t sure if that was even a conscious choice in the first place or if Husk simply passed out there and nobody bothered to move him somewhere else.
So when one day someone pounded at his door, he was rather surprised to see Husk standing there, barging his way in. He was clutching an – presumably – empty bottle and was rather wet, as it had been raining most of the day.
“Do you need something?” he asked then to which Husk didn’t really reply – he simply shook his fur and got water everywhere. That was quite disgusting, to be absolutely honest, but luckily Niffty would surely clean everything up in a heartbeat. Husk then finally turned to him.
“Bar’s closed today.”
That was it; the cat didn’t offer more information. Surely Husk would not consider his home to be a replacement bar? He did have alcohol here, yes, but it was not for public consumption. Husker tried to take a drink out of his empty bottle before he realised it’s empty. He let out a disappointed sound, but didn’t ask for more.
“Part of the owner’s family got killed during the last Extermination, so the bar’s closed for the moment. And it’s raining, as you sure have noticed.”
Maybe Husk was expecting him to turn around to look and verify that yes, it was indeed raining, but he would not get that satisfaction here. For a moment, they both stared at each other, each willing for the other to give up first. Husk gave in first, heading towards the couch. Without much questioning, he plunked down on it and for that day, it was the end of the discussion. In fact, it was also the end for every discussion after that, because soon enough Husk was able to get inside the house without knocking. Alastor slept very rarely, so he would notice the cat getting in most days. But some days he’d wake up and Husker would simply be there, purring on the couch. The Radio Demon found he truly didn’t mind.
In fact, he found that having the cat lounging on the couch was somewhat reassuring. And, obviously, he’d blow an air horn next to Husk’s face.
 ~
And now they stayed at the Hazbin Hotel – Charlie still called it Happy Hotel and yes, he realised that was still technically the name of it, but he simply didn’t care – and they each had their own rooms. He still caught Husk sleeping at the bar enough times to make it feel like a real home. He was nice enough most days to leave his air horn in his room while he went for his morning walk. If Husk was still asleep by the time he returned, he got his eyebrow plucked. It was, after all, Husk’s own fault for being so sensitive to all and every form of teasing.
It was very hard to get Husk truly drunk. While he might be severely intoxicated, Husker being black-out drunk was something Alastor hadn’t seen as of yet. He’d always stopped before that happened for some reason, and he’d always been curious.
“How am I supposed to get home if I don’t know where I’m going?”
So Alastor simply concluded for himself that it probably had something to do with how Husk died – he didn’t know. Asking would probably lead to be asked himself and that was just not a topic he was interested in sharing. Sure, he could always just not answer, but Husk would still have asked and it would forever taint the room. So it was best it remained a secret – perhaps would share one day without him having to ask in the first place.
He found Husk several times in front of his door, deep asleep, usually hugging an empty bottle of the favoured alcohol for the night. After waking him up – with an air horn, of course – the cat would usually shuffle off with a very casual “fuck you” and that would be done.  Then, one night, he let the door unlocked as a test. And sure enough, come morning, he found Husk asleep on a chair in his room. He didn’t know why he came here when he had his own bed just next door, but he wouldn’t let the opportunity be taken away to dump a bucket full of ice-cold water onto Husk’s head and see him jump. After all, what did his friend expect?
With all the pranks he could pull off on Husk, the cat was a giving bag full of wonders.
 ~
But now it’s been several days since the last time. When he went for his morning walk, Husk was not lying atop the bar asleep; and he also didn’t come crawling to his chair in the middle of the night anymore. Alastor surely missed his daily morning routine of pranks. Now, he would find Husk in front of the fridge when he returned in the morning; surely looking for cheese – for some reason, Husk really loved cheese.
He could, of course, simply assume that Husk finally learned to sleep in his own bed. But – something told him that that wasn’t the case. Husk never cared where he slept – in fact, he has found him in questionable positions all throughout. And – he believed, that somewhere deep down, Husk was looking forward to the teasing he received.
“Husk”, he said in the kitchen. “It is so good to see you finally learned where your own bed is.” It was supposed to be a jab, but the cat just growled at him, took the cheese out of the fridge and left the kitchen, heading over to his bar without a doubt. It sure left a sour feeling in his chest. No matter, it was time to brew some coffee.
“Will you perform some more magic on me tonight?”
“I think you’ve seen the best of it by this point, Angel.”
“Oh, come on, there’s gotta be some more! It gets me all excited.”
“Fine, but we gotta do it somewhere else than your fucking bed this time.”
Huh. Now that was an interesting titbit of conversation to overhear. So that’s where Husk had been spending all his time – in the bed and general company of Angel Dust. Of course, he himself had always stayed far away from any such activities, but he had thought that Husk did the same. After all, the only thing the cat was interested in was drinking and gambling – right?
Well, apparently not. Alastor wasn’t even sure why it upset him so. Let Husk do whatever he wants, as long he would still be available for menial task. So – so why was it so upsetting? Husk wasn’t really a friend – he was simply an asset that had proven itself to be very reliable. He wanted to break something, but he didn’t know what. Maybe he should go out. Yes. That might clear his head and if he was lucky, he would even come across a random demon he could tear apart.
 ~
The air outside calmed him down rather effectively. It was starting to get late, and he should be making food technically, but he didn’t care. If someone helped her, Niffty was a good enough cook. So he strolled down the road, on the way into the city.
He didn’t really have a haunt to visit regularly. Normally, he would visit Rosie, but she was out of town. And besides, he didn’t really have the mindset to share his thoughts with someone. He was unsure what to do about the Husk-Angel-situation. He probably had no right to intervene and realistically, why would he even want to? It would only be beneficial. If people trusted Husk, they would also trust him. The cat integrating into these people seemed a perfect fit. Still, it made him upset thinking about Husk in that fellow’s room.
“Hey, handsome, you’re here for a good time?”
He turned his head and saw a female demon saunter over. She wore very little clothing and he wondered why that was. ...oh, she was probably in the same profession as Angel Dust. She came close to him and put her hands on his chest. What a disgusting pig.
“I could make ya a good offer...”
Hm. Maybe she could offer information while she was still alive.
“If I asked you to perform magic on me, what would you do?”
She seemed taken aback by that for a moment before regaining her posture.
“Well, if you’d have me, I could show you all the magic in the world, for a very nice price.” So, it was something of the sort. Simply the thought of Husk and Angel Dust actually engaging in that disgusting behaviour set him on edge. He grabbed both of her wrists and come closer to her. Maybe she realised who he was, just now. What a poor little soul this sinner was. It was way past dinner-time, as well.
“Oh my darling, I could just eat you up.”
 ~
He returned to the hotel, somewhat sated. Of course, that demon had been very low quality, so she tasted exactly like that. But it had satiated his hunger for the most part at least.
Husk was not behind the bar when he returned, and given the time, he was probably in Angel Dust’s room. It set him back on edge right away. He tightened his grip around his microphone, so much in fact it started to complain. It was such a useless thing. He let it disappear. He didn’t need any more annoyance right now. Now, he decided to be stupid.
Alastor went upstairs and instead of going into his own room, he went into the direction of Angel Dust’s room. There were sounds coming out of the door. It sounded like someone squealing and another voice chuckling. The first voice probably belonged to Angel, and the second one must be Husk’s. Alastor himself never really heard Husk chuckle or even laugh; mostly it was a bunch of yelling and growling.
He left.
The next morning, he sought out Charlie. He needed answers and he didn’t know who else would be able to provide them. Normally, he’d ask Husk because he wouldn’t care why Alastor asked things. Obviously, that wasn’t a possibility right now. Charlie was the only option he truly had. The chances of Niffty telling Husk were just too great to risk it.
“Charlie.”
The girl was sitting in the kitchen, drinking her morning drink. He clearly startled her, but that hardly mattered.
“Oh! Good morning, Al!”
He hated that name. But, he didn’t want to correct her. It was a nickname, and nicknames meant at least some sort of affection. Also, Husk used it too, along with many other names. Strangely enough, he didn’t hate it as much whenever Husk used it. To be fair, the nickname usually followed some sort of insult, so it hardly mattered.
“I have questions regarding sexual acts. You are in a sexual relationship with Vaggie, correct?”
That made her spit her drink out. She went beet-red and he didn’t understand. He hadn’t said anything wrong, had he? Husk and Angel both had called Vaggie and Charlie girlfriends.
“W-w-w-w-w-w-why would you ask that, what the hell.”
She stuttered and gaped like a fish. He tilted his head. He wondered if that sort of reaction was common. Perhaps he should launch an experiment on Husk, once this was all sorted out.
“I am simply curious as to what sounds would emit from such an act.”
She went even redder if that was even possible and her mouth moved without purpose. Was it perhaps a difficult question? He could retell all the sounds someone made when he tore them apart. Maybe intercourse was something more difficult and complex in retelling. But if that was the case, everyone seemed quite obsessed about it. Perhaps he should’ve asked the female demon before killing her. It was too late to do that now, however.
Charlie just ran out and left him standing. His only hope now was that she would not tell Vaggie. He closed his eyes briefly to regain his composure.
Later that day, he sat at the bar and enjoyed a drink Husk had given him. The cat was trying to learn how to mix new cocktails, and was giving his tests out to anyone who wanted them. Alastor, so far, thought them all to be too mild and Husk said that was the point.
“Hey, Al!”
It was the obnoxious voice of Angel Dust sounding through the lobby. What could the spider possibly want with him? He decided to bear with it though.
“Hello, Angel Dust. It’s lovely to see you.”
Angel slid down into the seat next to him, soon to be served another of Husk’s new recipes. He grinned like he knew something and winked at Husk who paid no mind. Alastor doubted he even saw the wink and half suspected it was aimed more at him.
“I heard you asked Charlie about the do-do. Why not come to me and ask me all the sexy stuff?”
Oh. It was even worse than Charlie running to Vaggie; she had run to Angel Dust. Husk stopped in his actions and looked up, lifting an eyebrow questioningly. If Alastor would be a sweating type, he’d be doing it now. Luckily, he was not.
“I wanted an explanation, not a demonstration.”
Angel Dust laughed and hit two of his hands on the table. He quickly turned back to his glass, mainly to avoid Husk’s gaze. How should he explain? It was sort of embarrassing. But there was no backing out now.
“I was simply curious as to what sounds such an occasion would produce.”
Angel was wheezing now and Husk was still glaring at him. It was hard keeping his composure. Angel stopped laughing and decided to be – “helpful”, as he demonstrated various moans, screams and sighs. Alastor broke his glass, got up and left.
“Now you’ve done it, shithead.”
“Yeah, but now we’ve got more time for us, sweetheart.”
He didn’t hear Husk’s response and he didn’t even want to. He was fuming.
He went out again.
It was a shame, letting all that food go to waste.
 ~
Alastor didn’t return until the next day. He didn’t bother to clean up, he was still angry. He was angry at Angel Dust, angry at Charlie and angry at Husk. And he didn’t know what to do about it. Could he tell Husk to just stop?
“You look like shit.”
He looked to his side and saw Husk sitting in front of the bar, scowling at him. He had various playing cards in his hands and seemed to be Angel-free at the moment. He chose to ignore the cat’s comment and strolled over.
“What are you doing?”
Husk shrugged and showed him the cards. “A week or so ago, I showed Angel one of my magic tricks. And ever since I did that, he’s hot on my fucking tail to show him another one. So, I’m practicing again. And also, I try to teach myself some new tricks I can show him.”
Alastor stood in front of his cat as he went on and on about the new trick he found somewhere.  Magic. Husk loved magic tricks. He’d completely forgotten about that. So – the “magic” Husk performed for Angel was just – was just magic card tricks. Now he felt like a fool.
“That’s what you’ve been doing at night?”
Husk just nodded.
“Yeah, it really cut into my fucking drinking time. I can’t be completely smashed for the tricks, y’know?”
Alastor just left. He went into his room, cleaned up and felt like a weight lifted from his shoulders. He made a complete fool out of himself, but now, it was over. Shortly after, he returned to the lobby and Husk had his back to him. Wonderful. He stepped up to him – luckily Husk barely turned around anymore when he heard him approach – and blew his air horn at Husk’s ear.
“WHAT THE FUCK –“
Yes, all was right in the world again.

The Seven Deadly Episodes
“Episode 1: That’s Entertainment!”
(See Hazbin Hotel, That’s Entertainment!)
Charlie sings her lament “I’m Always Chasing Rainbows.” Followed by “Inside of Every Demon is a Rainbow” followed by “Alastor’s Reprise.”
(See also “Helluva Boss”)
 “Episode 2”
Part 1: Group eats Alastor’s Jambalaya and first customers arrive at the hotel. Vaggie works as a manager, Charlie and Alastor greet people at the door. Razzle and Dazzle and Niffty help with carrying bags to the rooms.
Charlie sings a happy song (“Things Can Go Well in Hell”)
Part 2: Sir Pentious goes to Baxter and gives him technology and money in exchange for making him stronger Egg Bois and repairing his ship.
Baxter sings (“Science and Solitude Serenade”)
Sir Pentious sings a victory/anticipation song as his new inventions are made (“I’m Sssso Evil!”)
Part 3: Vaggie gets mad when Niffty, Angel, Alastor and Husk mess things up. Husk drinks and gambles too much, calling her a bitch, Niffy brings the wrong food to the rooms and Alastor knocks her down on purpose. And Angel’s antics and pole dancing make her mad. Alastor assaults Vaggie, slaps her butt and gropes her. Vaggie becomes jealous when Alastor and Charlie dance and hang out. Vaggie loses it when Alastor does radio dad jokes on stage. Angel leaves to see his family and prepare for the next turf war.
(Vaggie sings a ranting song: “I’m Gonna Kill Them”)
Part 3: Valentino gets angry with Angel for not giving him money, resulting in a harsh “punishment” that was both arousing and deadly. Angel is further humiliated when Vox puts it on TV and Velvet shares it around social media. Henroin, his father, abuses Angel afterward, calling him a gay sissy druggie, while the white spider mother, Acknida, looks on.
Black furry brother Aracknis says to Angel and Molly they are slutty loser twins. Angel and Molly comfort each other and start the next turf war with Cherri vs Sir Pentious and Baxter, much to his gray furred father and older brother’s disgust.
Angel sings a lament/whimsical song about feeling stuck but trying to keep fighting and pursuing his ecstasy pleasures (“Fuck My Life…Dust Myself Off”)
The next battle is harder and Sir Pentious is almost victorious (“No Alastor to save you this time!”) Sir Pentious shoots a blast that destroys most of a city and lots of demons. Cherri tosses a bomb, causing the ship to crash toward the ground. (“My turf, you scrambled shit eggheads!”) She manages to blow up several other metallic egg bois before getting shot by Sir Pentious, knocked out. Molly and Angel scurry over to the base and blast Sir Pentious backwards, while making more sex jokes. The two of them manage to knock him out and declare West City theirs. Baxter heals Sir Pentious, stuns Angel and escapes via a smoke grenade, back to his lab.  Katie and Tom Trench share this on the news, Tom making dirty comments about Cherri and Molly. Molly watches in horror from behind a cliff as Vox and his demon minions drag an unconscious angel back to the studio (to be later brainwashed by Vox and Valentino.)
Part 4: In a dramatic twist, Lucifer enters the hotel to see what is going on. Lucifer notices Charlie trying to rehabilitate demons and shakes his head. He criticizes her for being involved with Vaggie and trying to “hinder (his) routine/family tradition of instilling fear and suffering.” Helsa and her green brother Adrian (Charlie’s ex) also arrive to further mock Charlie and assault her plans.  Adrian tries to get back with Charlie by scooping her up in his arms…but Vaggie points her spear at him and he lets her go. Charlie explains why she broke up with him and encouraged him to see the good in people. He just scoffs. “It’s me or nobody,” he said.
Charlie goes to talk with her parents in private. Lilith gets back from a concert performance and modeling shift.
The Magne Family sing a song called (“Royal Problems are Shit)”
(Charlie sings about wanting to redeem sinners, Lucifer sings about wanting to keep up his fear inducing reputation and Lilith sings about how busy she is and how she wants to spend more time with her family).
In private with her parents, Charlie argues against the exterminations but Lucifer said it was part of an agreement between him and God: reduce the population so Hell wouldn’t be a threat. In exchange, the angels wouldn’t harm the royal family. The problem is…Heaven is elite and only chooses those who truly redeemed themselves and embraced God. Lucifer thinks Charlie’s plan won’t work 1 because the ridiculous idea would make the family look like a weaker joke and 2 he secretly worries that if Charlie redeemed sinners, she would go to Heaven with them, thus leaving her parents and kingdom behind.
(Brief backstory about how Lucifer met Lilith and fell from Heaven. “Demons never get second chances, Charlie. They’re destined to suffer like I did. Unfortunately, redeeming sinners is only half the hard part. Getting them into Heaven would be near impossible if they didn’t match up to certain standards.” Charlie, in tears, is still willing to try.)
No one notices a shadow spirit overhear their conversation and pass the information back to Alastor. He lets out a low laugh and says “Stay tuned,” (roll credits). Extra scene of the egg bois shooting each other with Sir Pentious’ ray gun, the overlord chasing after them in anger.
  “Episode 3”
Charlie wonders where Angel is. Molly races to the hotel and tells them the news. Charlie and Alastor and several other demons volunteer to sneak into Vox’s lair and rescue Angel. Vaggie is left behind, fuming, Charlie had said “Vaggie we need someone to help protect the hotel.” Vaggie said “You wanna rescue that pervert, fine, but don’t expect me to give you any advice on where to get spears.”
Charlie apologizes and says her advice would be helpful. Vaggie gets another one from the black market, keeping her own. She gives it to Charlie in secret, saying “hold onto it, don’t let anyone else have it. And be careful.”
Molly recruits a porn-loving teen rebel Hellhound, Crymini.
Charlie, Molly, Crymini, and Alastor and the group sneak into the studio. Vox has Angel hypnotized and orders him to attack. Vox then uses the time to brainwash the population with sex and propaganda on TV. Soon, everyone is hooked to the screens, giving Vox extra energy. Alastor encounters his rival and they both engage in a brutal fight over Hell. Alastor summons Niffty to fight Velvet and Husk to stop Valentino from violating Molly. Crymini fights off the minions of the three Vs.
Charlie briefly battles with Angel, his eyes red lines like Vox’s. She conjures up fire and notices the spear. She slices off a wire hooked to Angel’s head and breaks Vox’s possession by setting the spear tip on fire with her fingers, trapping Angel in a fiery pentagram, gently inserting it in the spot between his eyes, and chanting a Satanic cleansing ritual in French. (She learned that from Lucifer after he explained what could happen if she “took shit from other demons”).
Alastor and Vox are equally matched. Radio waves and TV screens clash throughout Hell. “TV killed the Radio Star begins to play, causing Alastor to start losing, even resulting in him being electrocuted in a tangle of cables. Niffty defeats Velvet with Molly’s help and a distraction from Cherri Bomb (escaping through the red smoke). Velvet gets up and brushes off the fire from her clothing.
Valentino, knocking Husk away says “Angel, baby, submit to me or I’ll kill you…or better yet, make you watch as I “mess” with your friends live on TV!” Angel’s eyes briefly turn into hearts…nearly under his control… “And you can say goodbye to your pathetic Happy Hotel!”
Husk offers to gamble against Valentino, the winner gets Angel. They gamble as the two overlords fight, outside. Husk wins but Valentino noticed him cheating. Before Valentino can unleash his full power, Vox and Alastor unintentionally ram into him as they fly through the wall and windows.
Lucifer, a flaming blue deer overlord, and a black spider overlord arrive to end the fight. Just before the fight ends, Alastor lands the victory blow, shattering a hole in Vox’s TV head and knocking him to the ground. Lucifer warns Vox and Alastor that he can send them into the void if they cause any more trouble. Both nod and separate. Vox goes back to the studio to get repaired and Valentino promptly fires Angel and takes his money. Now Angel suffers from withdrawal but Charlie helps him out. She reminds him of all the good things he has done…saving his friend’s lives, caring for his family, and working hard to stay clean.
Katie and Tom tell about the event on the news and their ratings go sky high.
Katie and Tom visit the hotel at the wrong time. Charlie sings a cheesy song to Angel, Alastor, Husk, Niffty and Vaggie and the other demons (“Redemption and Rainbows.”)
The other demons laugh and Alastor laughs and claps. Charlie is once again, humiliated on the news. Catie joyfully calls Charlie a failure, as her plan hadn’t worked yet, making Charlie mad and upset again.
Later Angel thanks Charlie for saving him and thanks Husk for saving his sister. Husk gradually warms up to everyone and even tells Alastor and the group about his time in the Vietnam War. It was revealed that Vaggie had told Charlie’s parents what was going on, (thus risking her life if she made a wrong impression to Lucifer) thus ending the battle and saving the area.
Many weeks later, Charlie excitedly announces that Angel, Vaggie, and maybe Husk are ready to go to Heaven.
In private, it is revealed that Husk and Niffty sold their souls to Alastor in hopes of easier lives. Niffty, under possession, steals Vaggie’s spear and gives it to him. For the first time ever, Alastor frowns and cries…because of several reasons. 1 he discovers that his mother is in Heaven and that (in his mind) he cannot be redeemed and he can’t go see her…he’s a lost cause, as Lucifer had told him. 2 If he continued on with his plan, it would hurt Charlie and put their friendship on the line. His shadow overtakes him and his grins again, saying “Stay tuned” and eating a severed demon head.
 “Episode 4”
Charlie, Vaggie and the others sing karaoke and Angel Dust does some pole dancing (he makes Alastor try some moves much to his embarrassment.) Angel poses on a counter as a “tasty meal” while Alastor tries to “cook” him with a flamethrower. The new motto for the hotel made by Alastor “Come in and die… (Charlie quickly adds): “…of fun!”
Although Alastor had defeated Sir Pentious, made jambalaya for the group, encouraged Charlie along the way and helped in the battle against the three Vs, he also was up to no good. (The only one suspicious being Vaggie).
When Lucifer didn’t approve of Charlie’s idea, Alastor said Charlie’s idea was nonsense but then mentioned that he wanted to help her run it due to being bored. “Lucifer, you seem to be awfully hard on her a lot. Why so serious and strict?” Luicifer replied, “None of your fucking business, freak show. You don’t know what’s best for her. I told her not to trust any demons…especially the suspicious ones.” Alastor says with a (fake) pleading voice, “Please Lucifer sir, give Charlie a chance. I’m only here to help her out and protect the hotel.” Lucifer threatens to kill Alastor if he harms Charlie and Alastor knows not to mess with him…so he calculates his next move in his head.
He does other things as a trickster:
Alastor stirs an argument between Husk and a bunch of Hellhounds over who won a rigged card game.
Aastor broadcasts murders, Hazbin Hotel events and dad jokes for comedic effect.
He calls Niffty in to wake demons super early to rapidly clean their rooms and serve them (misplaced) breakfast meals.
Husk hordes the liquor and wine for himself and Alastor doesn’t say anything.
Alastor invites Mimzy and Rosie, his fellow music friends over for a show, even inviting Charlie to dance and sing “Your Never Fully Dressed” on stage with him. Vaggie glares in envy much Alastor’s amusement, though Charlie doesn’t notice.
To ignite Charlie’s anger and desire to see her goal to the end, Alastor causally suggests to the Eldriches to give the hotel a bad review and to harass “your familial rivals.”
Charlie meets up with her friends to go to her mother’s Resist concert. Later on, a family feud begins between the Magnes and Eldriches. It is revealed that the Eldriches had posted bad reviews about the hotel and that Katie Killjoy helped spread the rumors about the “Hazbins.” Charlie is about to fight them, but instead tolerates them and treats them as guests like the other demons coming to the hotel. It is here that Charlie matures and tries hard to see the good in everyone…but she also learns not to trust many demons (ironically trusting Alastor more as he helps out).
Alastor plans some more before he says “Stay tuned.”
 “Episode 5”
Alastor’s plan slowly comes into being. He decides to stay behind 1 because he hasn’t been redeemed and 2 to heed to Lucifer’s concern about the dangerous archangels. (He still only cares for himself and isn’t in love with anyone.) Charlie and her friends reach the Heavenly Gates but are judged by the army of Archangels upon arrival. Only a few rich demons have access to Heaven and they turn into humans with wings or friendly bi pedal animals. The group barely escapes with their lives until Lucifer arrives and saves them…disintegrating the angels.
Charlie cries and tells everyone what happened. She reconciles with Vaggie but Lucifer interrupts them to take Charlie aside. He loses his patience and slaps her when she summons fire around her.
Charlie’s parents had been right about it being nearly impossible to get into Heaven but Charlie refused to give in. She argues that everyone deserves a chance and bursts into tears. Lucifer said “Maybe it’s for the best” to which Charlie replies “No it’s not!” Lucifer realizes that God and the Archangels are planning to arrive in several days. God and the angels think that if “redeemed” sinners entered Heaven, they could cause chaos and be spies for those in Hell. Heaven wouldn’t be able to use their effective fear tactics of killing demons once every year to reduce the population.
He believes that if Charlie hadn’t started all this, then maybe the mess wouldn’t have occurred. One of the angels appears to Lucifer and orders him to destroy the hotel in order to not encourage redemption from sinners who “deserve to suffer and stay in their place.” Lucifer complies (much to Lilith’s and Charlie’s protests) in order for the archangels to spare him and his family. (thankfully everyone is outside and the hotel is repaired later.) Charlie swears at her parents and runs away.
Charlie sings another lament (“Rainbows Fade Away”)
Outside, Alastor comforts Charlie after she’s upset that her plan failed. Charlie adds “I bet you’re happy that you finally got to see sinners fail.” Out of spite, Charlie steals her father’s apple staff and gives it to Alastor. Alastor takes Charlie into an empty radio studio. They kiss and share a song and dance. Charlie is assured that things will turn out right in the end.
Niffty captures Vaggie and Husk captures Angel while under Alastor’s spell. By the time Vaggie and Angel break free and get away, Charlie is nowhere to be seen. Niffty and Husk turn back to normal and apologize to them, explaining how they had made deals with Alastor in exchange for easier lives in Hell.
Alastor sings a jolly electro swing song called “Are you Ready?” (“Are you ready to change the world, dear?)
But then the song changes and Charlie soon realizes she’s in a trap. Alastor grins and holds up a knife…then it shows a brief flashback of a human Alastor murdering his victims in a forest. “Are You Ready” quickly turns darker. (“Are you ready to suffer and fail, my dear?”) Charlie finds herself surrounded by the shadow spirits. She tries to fight them off but Alastor lulls her to sleep and holds her prisoner in his interdimensional lair. When Alastor sees Charlie crying and saying “I trusted you!” he feels an odd feeling of guilt for his betrayal. He later holds her a spear-point in front of Lucifer and Lilith. Lucifer threatens to blast him to bits but Alastor offers to make a deal. The deal was: Charlie’s life and safety in exchange for the throne. Alastor orders both her parents to shake on it. Lilith does first and her dark power flows to Alastor. Lucifer engages in battle with Alastor but stops when a powerless Lilith is being choked by black tendrils.
Charlie rescues her mother and escorts her to a safe place. Alastor defeats Lucifer, takes his dark energy and soon takes over Hell.
God and the angels noticed Lucifer’s actions and would later send more Archangels down to cleanse one-fourth of the population, a larger number than before. The demons declare war. The overlords briefly work together to slow down the Archangels, Michael, Gabriel etc.
Alastor briefly enjoys slaughtering demons and angels to his heart’s content. (Alastor’s shadow had wanted this all along…for Alastor to release the dark shadow spirits and voodoo imps to consume the souls of demons and roam as they please. Alastor, the whole time, had let himself been manipulated by his shadow self.)
Alastor says “Stay tuned.”
 “Episode 6”
Alastor later shows a change of heart when he notices Charlie and her friends struggling to fight the angels and overlords. He realizes that if he continues to be consumed by bloodlust and restlessness, than he will never see his mother and lose his only friendships with Charlie and her friends. He fights off his evil shadow and redeems himself…but his staff breaks, restoring power/souls to Niffty, Husk, and Charlie’s parents and making him powerless.
Charlie later frees Niffty and Husk and Alastor helped (once he fought off the evil influence of his wendigo shadow). Alastor defeats his shadow but his microphone staff breaks…leaving him powerless.
The final battle between Heaven and Hell. Lucifer and Lilith fight Michael and the other archangels. Lucifer has a change of heart and vows to help Charlie, once he realizes that sinners can be redeemed if the rules are changed. Those who die twice get sent to the void.
Alastor says “Stay tuned.”
 “Episode 7: That’s a Wrap!”
In the end, Charlie and Vaggie go to Heaven and get married. Charlie becomes a mediator between the two worlds, having black angel wings and helping with redeeming sinners. Vaggie watches over people who get reincarnated back on Earth or helps them prepare for the void. Angel turns human-like and goes by Anthony, his human name, though he still enjoys Angel Dust. Vaggie discovers her human name; Vagatha and she turns into her Hispanic human self with dark wings. Husk discovers his human name: Hustle (for now) and turns cat-like with friendlier features. Alastor gets redeemed and turns into a light-blue suit wearing man with a light brown deer face, (with human hands) who reunites with his mother in Heaven after more than 100 years. Husk/Hustle finds new love in Heaven and Anthony/Angel, Molly, become role models to kids in Heaven. Lucifer and Lilith stay behind to rule Hell, their powers restored, but Charlie can visit both worlds. God agrees to let more people into Heaven after they proven themselves through various tests in the other Circles of Hell. The purges finally come to an end…a truce.
Alastor says with a laugh, “That’s All Folks…Or Is it?”
Note: This is if no one dies and everyone lives happily ever after. Who will actually survive, both in the show and in the unofficial episodes?

Note:  We’ve seen what makes Tommy and Addy sizzle and spark. So this chapter explores a little more of what made Addy hold on to WIll even after he was gone, while still being torn over Tommy. If I wrote this well enough, I want you to be morally conflicted. I want you unsure of how you want this to end. Everyone had a stake in the game. Everyone has a reason to win. I wrote this story with the intention of it being very morally gray. Everyone is no more a sinner than a saint. Everyone is dirty for their own reasons. Hopefully I achieved that level of conflict. Also, I did do research on POW camps in WWI to try to keep this as authentic as I could. And it’s important to keep in mind this was really the generational that brought to light “shell shocked” and back then society wasn’t really sure what to do with them or how to help them.
Gotta start it off with thanks again... THANK YOU for all the likes, reblogs, and comments!!! I am just blown away by the support for this story. I never imagined anyone would want to read this and hopefully you guys still do.
So I guess it goes without saying, but I’m gonna say it anyway lol…
Likes, reblogs, and comments are encouraged and greatly appreciated. I’m just a lonely starving wannabe writer. Knowing what you guys think means everything!
After that day in the office, you keep your distance from Tommy. You realize he was right all along. You can’t go back to being friends like you had naively believed in the beginning, you had never really been friends from the start. Tommy had always been Will’s friend. You knew him because you hung on Will’s arm, you were Will’s girl.
And while you had grown close in your own way after the war before sleeping together. That closeness was still brought on by Tommy’s commitment to keeping his promise to his best pal. You realized whatever justifications you made while Will was gone, while he was dead, what you did with Tommy in his office that day was cheating. Plain and simple. There’s was no moving that boulder in any other direction.
So in order to live with an action you swore you’d never commit, you stayed away from Tommy, you kept your distance. For the sake of your husband and your marriage, you steered clear of the temptation of Thomas Shelby.
There were times you second guessed your choice to give up on your love for Tommy, to give up the love he had for you. But as the weeks went by, Will let the walls come down and you both grew steadily closer. You began to rediscover your love, rediscover each other.
He began to open up and tell you about the war. Revealing after the explosion he dug himself out, but the Germans found him. He had been kept in a camp with hundreds of other men, surrounded by barbwire fencing. Little by little the pieces came out, some late at night, more after he had a few too many. He explained he lived in a makeshift tent most of the time, digging holes in the ground to keep warm at night when there wasn’t mud.
Men were always sick from typhus or cholera and dying all around him every day, some in his hands. There was never enough food, mostly just soup or scarce amounts of water that became tainted when heavy rains would make the latrine overflow.
After half a bottle of whiskey one night, Will told you he had been kept close to the front line and that in some of his darkness moments, digging trenches and carting away bodies until he was sure he would collapse, he could see the other side, he could see his fellow men fighting, he just couldn’t reach them without getting shot. Breaking the rules meant confinement, in small places with no light for up to a week, or being tied to a post for days, or beaten severely.
He revealed he got the limp from flying shrapnel when he was digging the trenches. Said it got infected and he nearly died. He held on for you, convinced he’d see you again one day if he just held on, but it never healed right.
Will told you how he fought so hard to get back to you, refusing to give up even when he wanted to. He explained the prisoner exchange made the end of the war drag out, and even after they got him back he had spent months in a hospital recuperating.
You were angry he didn’t have anyone send word, angry he didn’t write, but you tried to understand… Will didn’t want you to see him like that. He didn’t want your reunion to be in a hospital bed while he felt broken and lame. Learning what he went through to get home to you, you knew you made the right choice.
You loved him, deeply. Even more now that you understood the nightmare he had gone through. You loved him before you knew what love was. And as your Will began to reveal himself to you more and more, you knew in your heart you couldn’t give up on him anymore than you could cut off your own leg and pretend to not be crippled by the loss.
Will keeps his promise, he keeps trying to be the man he was before. One night he surprises you. Taking your hand gently into his, he leads you out into the night. Lantern steady in his hand, you don’t know where you’re going as Will leads your down the soot covered streets of Small Health. When most of the seedier crowd came out for the night.
You had nearly turned in to bed for the night when he arrived home, excited and impatient like a boy about to sneak away with you. And for a moment he looks like the version of himself in his youth, before the war, sneaking you off before your father notices, to some private rendezvous where you could get lost in each other and forget the world.
You walk the streets side by side, his arm wrapped around your shoulders as he holds a lantern in the other. No one bothers you with Will by your side, no one messes with a Blinder, let alone one as notorious as Will. He had built a reputation for himself before the war, just like Tommy, that only seemed to amplify since he came back from the dead.
You’re not sure where you’re going until you reach the mass of wood and steel that makes up Charlie’s yard down by the cut. All gnarled and jagged edges in the dark. The stars obscured by the factory smog still heavy in the air, you still feel unsure why you’re here as Will moves on ahead, you trail his step as he clutches tightly to your hand. Weaving you through machine parts and rusted out junk, Will leads you around to the back.
“Does Charlie and Curly know we’re here?” You whisper as if you’ve broken into some place you don’t belong.
“Yeah,” Will nods easily, lifting the lantern a little higher to see ahead his feet. “He gave the word.”
Rounding a corner, you reach Charlie’s barn. You’re confused more than ever why Will dragged you out of your home after midnight to take you to Charlie’s barn, but his secrets are yet to be revealed. Will releases your hand as you both go inside, hanging the lantern on an old nail hammered into one of the posts that holds the barn steady. You look around trying to get a sense of why he brought you here, before admitting defeating.
“What are we doing here?” You finally ask.
“I wanted to bring you to the place.” Will tells you simply as you look around to see what’s changed since the last time you were there.
Not much from what you can tell, but everything is cloaked in shadows and poor lighting. It’s hard to see much of anything, not that you were ever an expert on Charlie’s yard or cared to be. Just another place to waste time in your youth. A place to run and hide, and make mischief of one kind or another.
“What place?” You ask as a quiet laugh breaks free, confused now more than ever over what he means as you snatch up an old horse shoe and give it an easy toss into the hay.
“Where I first knew I loved you.” Will says, the words vibrating at your back, instantly stopping you in your tracks as a shiver runs down your spine. You turn slowly to face him, the lantern casting shadows across his handsome face, making him glow in the yellow light of the flame.
“I was fourteen and you were twelve. I’d brought you here after you got into a fight with your old man. You found me on the street stirrin’ up trouble with Tommy an’ Arthur, an’ wanted to get away, so I took you here. It was late, an’ particularly dark that night, an’ all I had was that stubby fuckin’ candle.” He lets out an easy laugh at the memory.
“But I remember sittin’ in here with you an’ thinkin’ you were the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen.” Will’s words take your breath away, frozen and transfixed you watch as his slowly moves toward you in a shower of light and shadow. Brining it all back to you, a love nobody could break. The lifetime you shared before the war stole him away. You think you remember that night too. The first night he ever brought you to Charlie’s yard alone, after dark.
“I knew I loved you that night, Addy. An’ if given the chance, I’d have you as my girl the rest of my life. Only girl who didn’ look at me like I was trouble. Who’d look at me like I could be somethin’. An’ I use to think, if a girl as smart and pretty as you thought so, then maybe I could.” Will ends on husky whisper, wrapping you in his words and memories, as he stops in front of you. Softly he touches your cheek with the back of his hand as your heart races and you gaze up deeply into his eyes.
You catch sight of him pulling something from his jacket pocket as your gaze drops down to a little box held in his hand. Opening it up, inside revealed a silver band with delicate pedals and sweet ribbons engraved around a beautiful aquamarine gem.
You nearly gasp at the sight of it as your eyes shoot up in disbelief to Will’s smiling face and back down to the ring in the box.
“Will, what is this?” You ask, hardly able to catch your breath or believe your eyes.
“I told you when I married you I’d get you somethin’ better one day. You did such a great job holding everything together while I was gone that we ended up with some money after I took care of a few things for Tommy.” He explains, pulling the ring from the box before reaching for your trembling hand.
“Do you like it?” He asks as he slips the ring carefully onto your finger, next to the simple band of gold you had from your wedding day.
You gaze in wonder at the beautiful ring as it faintly sparkles against the lanterns flame on your finger, running your fingertips over it in awe as your heart beats hard in your chest.
“I love it,” You tell him, your breath heavy with disbelief. Hardly able to believe your eyes.
Taking your cheek gently into his hand, Will lifts your face until your eyes meet once again.
“You waited for me even after hope was gone. Held it together when anyone else woulda fallen apart. Your everything to me, Addy. An’ I don’ know what made ya fall for a fuckin bloke like me, but I’m pretty damn sure I’m the luckiest bastard for it.” He tells you, his words ending in a slight chuckled smirk before pulling you into his waiting kiss.
Your heart pains with the never-ending stings of guilt that wind like fine tendrils around your strangled heart, because you didn’t wait. You betrayed him and if he knew with who it’d break his heart too, but tonight you push that down. You bury it away.
You don’t want to drown held down by the weight of your choices, tonight you just want to be here with your husband. Completely present in this beautiful moment with him. Just the two of you like before the war. So you set yourself free, sighing against the heat of his mouth as the kiss slowly breaks.
“I love you Adeline Darmody.” Will whispers softly to you in the pale light that surrounds you both, his full soft pout faintly brushing your lips with his declarations, before pulling you back in for another slow burning kiss.
Running his tongue along the seam of your mouth, Will seduces your lips to part, deepening the kiss, as warm and wet meet for a taste. His hand finds your back, running along your spine and down to grip at your hip, pulling you deeper into the curve of him. You’re the first the break the kiss, smiling up at him in the shadows of the barn, as your chest rises and falls heavily against the heat of his kiss.
“I love you too William Darmody.” You whisper back to him as his fingers lacing through your hair and he smiles back you lovingly.
Your stomach clenches with the sight of it. Standing here alone with your husband in the pale lantern light, Will looks like the boy you fell in love with before life and the war stole it all away.
Seeing him like this again feels like magic. It sparks and tingles just beneath your skin, your belly clenches and your heart races, you swear you could spend the rest of your days here and never want anything more, if only you could stay like this forever. Who you are today, holding onto everything you had before.
Leaning in, you give Will another quick kiss, but as he tries to deepen it, his arms pulling you close, you push off his chest and slip free of his grasp. Will watches you carefully, his eyebrow arching in question as you slowly back away from him and toward the darker end of the barn. Excitement building in your veins, your heart beginning to race harder as you flash him your best mischievous grin.
“You’re gonna have to work harder than that, Mr. Darmody.” You tease him, watching the rules of the game become clear in his mind as a smirk curls on his lips.
He holds your eyes for a moment and you brace yourself, heart pounding as you await his next move. When Will finally lunges for you, you squeal in delight, slipping out of his reach just before he can get ahold of you.
Moving quickly away, you glance back to see Will moving for the lantern still hanging on the nail, his pupils dark like madness in swirl of his beautiful blue eyes. You hold his gaze a moment longer before slipping into the shadows, deeper into the barn.
You wander down toward what you think is the back, where the piles of hay are stacked. Your eyes slowly adjust to the lack of light that surrounds you, the world transforming into bleeding shades of grey and blackness, all melting and weaving together. The sound of his steps sends you glancing back over your shoulder.
Spotting the faint light of the lantern approaching, you knew Will could find you easily, he still knows Charlie’s yard better than you. It’s then you realize you want him to find you, as you slowly turn back his way. The light from the lantern illuminating you as Will rounds the corner of the stables.
Your eyes meet in the faint yellow light as your hands rise and find the top button to your white blouse. Slowly working it free before your fingers slip down to the next. You watch Will’s gaze become transfixed upon the movement of your hands and the skin you’re slowly revealing to him as he draws closer to you with every step.
“Is this what you want, Will?” You ask suggestively, your voice raspy, breath heavy as you slip free the button held between your breasts, growing more wanton by the second from the heat of his stare. You know what Will wants, you can see the familiar darkness in his eyes. And you know what you want too… Him.
Sometimes it scares you how badly you want him still. As if losing him and thinking you’d never get to feel his love again made you realize how badly you covet it. Things may have been rocky when he first came home, so much time had passed, you were both different, but once he began opening himself back up to you, everything came back with it.
Will’s eyes flash up to yours with your question - full of innuendo, the heat of his gaze, the way he devours you with desire in his eyes, makes your belly tighten and skin grow flush even in the cold.
“Fuck,” You hear Will breath out on a heavy ragged breath as you finish the last few buttons on your blouse. He hooks the lantern on a nail hanging from another beam, practically to you now.
In seconds he’s on you, his mouth insistent and hungry against your own, pushing you back with the force of his kiss, as his arm encircle you, clutching you close against him and your arms tangle around the back of his neck.
When you break, it’s the sound of your breaths, heavy and panting that cuts through the quiet night air. Reaching the stacks of hay, Will hoists you up on a few bails, your legs spreading for him as he tugs your skirt up your thighs and slips between the warm embrace of them.
His mouth latches briefly onto your jaw before slipping down to the skin you’ve exposed for him. Sucking and nip at the sensitive place along your neck he knows always draws a moan from your lips as his hands moving eagerly inside your open blouse.
“You’re everything I want, Addy.” Will says on a deep gritty breath, finally answering your question as you pull the suspenders off his shoulders and begin to frantically pull free the buttons of his shirt.
His palms are cold and rough against your soft skin, the contrast feels deliriously good as your hands work free his shirt, eager to feel him under your palms, feel his skin warm against your own. Your head drops back in a daze against the assault of his soft full lips, your heavy sighs echoing through the quiet barn. You arch against him, encouraging the heat of his mouth as it moves further down your body, taking your blouse with him.
Reaching for the bulge pressed tightly against his trousers and your thigh, you rub your palm against him, trying to ignite the same pleasure he’s bringing you. You unbutton his trousers and Will’s knees buckle against the hay stack as you take ahold of him with a tight grip. A low shaky moan vibrating against the top of your breast as you begin to stroke him just the way you know he likes.
Will’s always been your weakness, from the first time he touched you. Since you first discovered how to make each other melt. The smell of him, the taste of him, the feel of him, he makes your body spark and sizzle under his undivided attention, under his love. He knows all your tender spots, every place that makes your whimper and beg, and you know his, all the little tricks and place that leave this fearless Blinder putty in your hands.
You were late. You were never late and you should have known that would only raise hairs, but you had foolishly hoped just this once it’d slip by. That in all the chaos of runners, the counters, John calling out odds as he scribbles chalk to a board, while men shuffle in an out of the building to thrown down their last coin, you’d slip by unnoticed. But your gut was right and your hopes are as empty as dreams come morning light it seems these days.
When you arrive at the betting shop, you slip past what feels like a herd of men, trying to disappear in the sea of them as they carry on at a dizzying pace. You hang your jacket over your chair and get right to it as if you had already been there. Plopping down in your usual chair, grabbing the slips, pulling the tally’s, but Polly is coming over, parting the sea before you’ve even gotten through the first few slips. You catch sight of her out of the corner of your eye as your face drops and you try to discretely pull your hair around your face.
“You’re late.” She says, stating the facts as she comes around your desk.
“I know. I’m sorry. Something came up.” You try to explain as you keep your hands busy, letting the papers slip through your fingers as you keep count, keeping your face down and your hair nearly in your eyes.
“Addy?” Polly calls, looking you over, you practically feel her gaze like a touch to your face, tugging it up to meet her eyes as she stops at the corner of her desk. Her tone neutral in a way that doesn’t make you second guess her call, but the knots in your belly know better as you finally glance up from your desk and meet her eyes. Trying your best to keep your hair in place the best you can.
“Stand up.” She orders almost instantly and you can see it in her eyes as your heart starts to hammer. Watch it register on her face as your duck your head back down to your desk.
“Pol, I’m trying to catch up on-“
“Up now,” she demands insistently, rounding the desk and pulling your chair back insistently.
Resigned to her will, you reluctantly your stand, because when Polly insists you’ve learned there’s no getting out of it. But you don’t look at her as you chew on your bottom lip. Keeping your eyes down, scanning the top of the desk, and hair in your face. But Polly doesn’t need or ask for permission as she moves to you, sweeping the hair back behind your ear and grabbing at your chin for a better look. You cringe even before she does.
“Holy shit,” Rolls heavily off her tongue, disbelief dripping from her words.
“He do this to you?” Polly inquires low on her breath, tilting your chin toward the light to examine the fresh bruise along the edge of your face, riding the ridge that joins your cheekbone and eye socket.
“It was an accident…” You try to explain before a pair of eyes that feel sharp like daggers pierce through you from across the room.
Even now you can feel the hold of them from a mile away. Your breath quickens with a new alarm as your eyes glance over quick and spot Tommy standing next to the door of his office. Hands are shoved tightly in his pockets, but his is jaw flexing, eyes zeroed in on you and Polly, before he bursts to life like a fired pistol, grabbing his jacket and storming for the door.
“Fuck,” You swear on a harsh frantic breath, pulling from Polly’s grasp as you watch Tommy storm out the front door of the betting shop. You don’t even need to bother asking to know where he’s headed and that’s exactly what you didn’t want to happen.
“Watch me stuff, Pol.” You practically beg her in haste. Your frantic eyes meeting her gaze, you can see she has questions of her own – about you, about your face, and why your chasing after Tommy, but there’s no time for any of them as you take off after him before he does something that will only make a bad situation worse.
Like a man on a mission, Thomas Shelby storms down the dirty streets of Small Heath. Women and children scurrying out his way as men nod or bow their heads in a show of respect as he marches by like a force of nature. By the time you make it out of the betting shop you have to practically race down the lane to catch up with him. Clutching your long skirt, your heels sink in the mud and filth as you make haste down the crowded streets of early morning.
“Tommy,” You take ahold of his arm as you finally reach him. Trying to reason with him, but Tommy only shrugs you off and keeps pounding the soot covered streets, billow of smoke from his cigarette blowing past his lips, and trailing him like the stacks from a nearby factory.
You realize in that moment you’re going to have to be more forceful in your approach if you have any prayer of getting through to him. Racing around to the front of Tommy, you press firmly against his chest, pressing your weight into his waistcoat and button-down as you dig your heels into the dirt and soot, trying to make him stop.
“Thomas stop,” You demand more firmly. “Don’t make me make a scene in the street in front of everyone.”
Your words break through his anger, Tommy waivers for a brief moment, his gaze faltering from the determined road ahead of him and down to where you press against him. It’s only a brief moment, but you seize it as you snatch his hand in your own and drag him into the nearest alley way, where you can have a word without all of Small Heath hearing about it. Having surely caused enough of a scene as it is, since no one - short of Pol - grabs at Thomas Shelby the way you just did and gets away with it… But most of Small Heath still doesn’t know what else he let you get away with and you intend to keep it that way.
“It was an accident.” You tell him the moment you’re alone. Trying to catch your breath after taking chase as you release his hand and turn to face him before he can take off again.
Tommy let’s out a huffed breath and shakes his head at the ridiculousness of your statement. He’d be amused if he wasn’t so angry. Tossing his cigarette to the ground, he steps into your space, moving in on you. The heat of his eyes, the formidable stride of his gait, cause your feet to step back as Tommy approaches, trying to hold onto the distance between you until your back hits the brick wall and there’s nowhere left to go. Tommy’s all-encompassing in his approach, covering the front of you, his shadow swallowing you as he stops barely a foot away from your body.
Your heart begins to pound hard in your chest with the closeness you two haven’t dared to share since that day in his office. Tommy’s hand reaches out for you, tucking your hair behind your ear to get a better look at the bruise along the edge of your face. His callused thumb runs delicately along the tender discolored flesh, sending shivers under your skin with the feel of his touch once again as you watch fire ignite in icy shards of blue, and realize, Tommy hates it even more from close up.
“He was dreaming.” You explain softly on a shaky breath, watching the anger of his furrowed brow as you he inspects you to ensure there aren’t any more and you try not to savor the feel of his touch of your face. He’s so close your almost afraid to speak anything loud, afraid when he responds the heat of his breath will only weaken your resolve.
“Dreaming…” Tommy scoffs loudly at your explanation. He steps back from you, having heard enough, he turns toward the entrance of the alley. Driven to return to his hunt for Will and have him answer a few questions of his own, but you swiftly snatch at the lapels of his jacket and move in front of him, blocking his way. Forcing Tommy to look at you as you protect your husband from an unfair wrath.
“It’s like with Danny, Thomas. He has nightmares almost every night. And sometimes he has them awake too.” You try to explain it the best you can as your chest tightens with each word.
“Sometimes it’s like he’s not even there. Like he doesn’t even know where he is or who I am.” You struggle in your desperation, trying to put words to something you don’t even fully understand yourself, but you need Tommy to understand Will didn’t hurt you intentionally. Will needs help and you feel if anyone can understand the price of war, it’s him.
Tommy stops pressing forward, his eyes falling and holding yours, and you can tell he’s finally listening. Finally understanding the gravity of the situation. Because Tommy does understand. All too well in fact. Before Addy he hardly slept and never peacefully. And after Addy… he tries not to close his eyes unless he absolutely has to. Just another ghost to haunt him in his dreams. Only this one, she took what was left of his soul.
“He was having a nightmare. I tried to wake him, but it was like he couldn’t even see me. He thought he was being attacked. I got him good gettin’ him off me. The glass cut his head open when it broke. It probably needs stiches, but he’s too damn stubborn to have it looked at. He thinks he deserves it Tommy… after what happened to me.” You ramble, your thoughts scattered, your breath as frantic and confused as you feel. You knew none of them came back the same, but you weren’t prepared for how helpless you’d feel when you couldn’t fix it. When you couldn’t make it better or even lessen the pain.
“It’s like he couldn’t see me, Tommy. It’s like I wasn’t there at all.” You bite at your bottom lip, tears springing to your eyes.
“When he finally came too, he was bleedin’ everywhere. He wouldn’ even let me help him. He wouldn’ let me near him once he realized he struck me. He’s terrified of himself. He blames himself for everything. An’ I don’ know how to help him.” The words fall from your lips on a desperate breath as your shoulders tremble and shake. Your eyes welled heavy with tears you can’t hold inside any longer as you finally say the words aloud you’ve been holding so tightly inside you. Trying to stay strong.
Your hands wipe at your cheeks, pushing away at the tears as fast as they come. Just when you think things are starting to come back together, it all falls apart again. You were startled when Will turned on you. Terrified when you saw his fist coming down on you as he held you to the bed. Grabbing the glass from the nightstand and smashing it into his head had been instinct alone. Everything happened so fast, in the blink of an eye in your mind.
But the eyes that held you to that bed weren’t the Will you know. His lips mumbling something in a language you didn’t understand. But none of that was scarier or broke your heart more than the look on Will’s face when he finally came to his senses. When he realized he had put his hands on you. Watching Will rip himself apart over what he had done, watching him lose faith and trust in himself a little more everyday… Nothing in this world could have prepared you for how painful and powerless that would make you feel.
Without words, Tommy pulls your tightly against his chest, his hand slipping into your hair, the other rubbing at your back. Unable to watch you crumble and not reach for you. Tommy swore to himself he wouldn’t touch you again after that day in the office and your distance only affirmed that was the right choice. But finally having a moment alone with you, even his best intentions proved weak.
And you’re just an malleable as you strive for distance, as the smell of Tommy engulfs your lungs, whiskey rich and smoky harsh, you feel your heart beating faster. It’s like breathing life back into your soul. A chamber all his own. A place only Tommy can reach.
You want to bury yourself deeper into him, wrap your arms desperately around him. You know you’ll be safe there, from everything you can’t fix, everything that makes you feel like a failure, but then you catch yourself. Catch yourself being weak and giving in to the fire. You know in your heart, you can’t keep doing this. It isn’t fair to any of you. And you don’t want to hurt Tommy any more than you want to hurt Will. That was the promise you made to yourself when you left Tommy’s office that day. You’re only making things worse when you let the fire reignite.
And what if someone saw you? How would you explain this… wrapped in Tommy’s arms, breathing him in?  Your heart begins to race and clenches as you quickly untangle from Tommy. Taking a step back as your eyes scan nervously about your surroundings to see if anyone is watching, but everyone out on the street seems too busy trying to make the most of the day, enough to get by.
You wipe the remaining tears that have fallen from your eyes and suck a sharp breath in, trying to compose yourself.
“He needs a friend, Tommy. He’s lost and hurting, and I don’t know how to help him.” You practically plead.
For being best mate’s since childhood, Tommy has steered clear of Will since he came home. Will hasn’t said much about it, he wouldn’t, and the fact that Tommy blows everyone off these days makes the odd circumstance easier to swallow, but you can see it hurts Will and you blame yourself for that too. If you and Tommy hadn’t – Maybe Will would have someone to turn to in his time of need.
Tommy shakes his head at the notion of what you’re suggesting as he pulls a cigarette from his pocket, letting it dangle from his lip, before his deft fingers slap a match against the box in his other hand. His easy dismissal only ignites the fire in your belly and amplifies your frustrations. Your world is hanging on by a thread while Tommy roams about Small Heath carefree having walled Will out of his life, like he’s punishing him, right along with you.
“An’ why not? Thought he was your best pal. You’ve known him all your life. Or is Thomas Shelby too mighty for a broken solder now?” You challenge, jaw growing tight as your irritation gets the best of your tongue. As Tommy gets the best of you, the way he seems to do so easily, both the good and the bad.
The fire in your tone gets a rise out of Tommy quick as he plucks the cigarette from his lips and counters you. No less immune to the embers that smolder between you, always ready to spark and reignite.
“What do you purpose, Addy? Should I invite him to the Garrison for a drink after I’ve been fuckin’ his wife for months? An’ what should we talk about, aye? Ask him if he loves the way you let out that little gasp just before you cum or perhaps how fuckin tight an’ wet you get? Or is that only for me, love?” Tommy comes at you, his tongue as sharp as the razors on his cap. As piercing as the daggers in his heart every time he’s reminded how much you love Will. How he lost you to a better man. Watching from the sidelines as you and Will grow closer with each passing day.
“Stop it!” You snap at him crossly, snatching the cigarette from his fingers as he draws it back to his mouth, tossing it violently to the ground below as you resist the urge to smack him hard across the face. Your chest huffing, how dare he think he can speak to you like that.
Tommy looks down at his cigarette you just threw in the mud, head tilting slightly as his jaw tightens in irritation before his gaze returns to you and he slowly moves in on you once again.
“Don’t you see, I can’t be his friend, Addy. I fucked his wife.” Tommy’s voice is low and dangerous, penetrating and calling for you as your back stumbles into the wall once again trying to evade the power he has over you.
“An’ given the chance...” Tommy tells you, his voice dipping down to a gritty whisper as he leans into your mouth. His hand finding and gripping at your jaw as his thumb dances around the edge of your bottom lip, but never quite touches the plump flesh. Your heart is pounding, you’re struggling to remember how to breathe as you gaze into Tommy’s hypnotic eyes and recognize the heat blowing back at you. You’re a cornered animal, backed into a trap. You still want him, you still miss him, and worst of all, Tommy knows it.
You close your eyes, trying to wall him out, trying to numb your heart and stay strong. You don’t know how you got here, in love with two men, but you’re trying to do the right thing.
“Tommy, don’ do this…” You whisper, your breath desperate.
And despite how selfish and cold Tommy can be at times, he does as you ask, instantly, because you wield power over him too. He steps back from you, releasing your face, but as your eyes open once again and you meet his gaze, you see it – undeniable pain. Tommy still wants you too. Still loves you, you were the only thing that breathed life back into him after the war, and your rejection, even for reasons you both understand, has still been incredibly painful for him.
His head bows, his cap taking the space in your vision his face just held, razors shining as the early morning light pierces down upon them, peeking out from a bleak overcast sky. When he glances back up at you a new cigarette is lit and hanging from his lip.
“If he touches you again he’s answering to me.” Tommy states firmly, unequivocally. There’s no question and you can see there will also be no persuasion. He’s giving you his word of warning now.
“He won’t.” You swear it. Will never has before, not even close. He threatened any man who thought of raising a hand to you. And the look in Will’s eyes when he realized what he had done… You’re certain it’ll haunt you the rest of your days.
Tommy’s seas of blue linger on you as the sun breaks through the clouds once again, bathing your both in touches of heat and light. There's a calling in his eyes, you recognize it as the sun pierces his pupil before Tommy swiftly turns and walks away without another word. One hand stuffed in his waistcoat, the other pulling away at a cigarette that encircles him in a cloud of smoke.
“Atleast tell me how to help him.” You yell back at Tommy as he goes.
“You can’t. We can’t be fixed, Addy.” Tommy hollers back, never turning back to face you until he reaches the end of the alleyway. Only then does he look back over his shoulder, your eyes locking in the moment.
“Didn’ you know? We died over there in the mud.” He tells you like a bullet aimed straight at your heart, before he turns back and disappears into the crowded Small Health streets. Leaving you alone with your thoughts and your plight.
Will comes home late that night. You expect him to be drunk, but he’s not. He looks painfully sober as he comes to stand beside you in your tiny hutch kitchen. Drawing your hands into his as he leads you over to your kitchen table, having you take a seat before he drags the other directly in front of you and lowers into it. He bought you your favorite treat from the little candy shop down by the church where you got married.
One of the things you love so much about him, he never forgets the little things you love, but you can tell none of that matters to him tonight as his hand brushes the side of your face, moving your hair back from the spot where he struck you earlier that morning. His thumb sweeping tenderly over the spot as his face twists in agony. His eyes growing that tortured shade of blue that breaks your heart.
“It’s a’right, Will.” You try to reassure him. Thankful he’s finally willing to touch you, be near you again, after being terrified of himself and inconsolable after what he’d done this morning.
Will’s blue eyes shoot to yours as you speak, tears glistening in his baby blues as his jaw clenches tight.
“No, it’s not Addy.” He tells you, his hand clutching desperately at your cheek as his words drip and drown with guilt and remorse.
“It’s not a’right. Nobody puts their hands on you, understand? Least of me.” His voice breaks at the end, cracking under the weight of own his desperation.
You reach for his hand on your face and cover it with your own, holding him close as his face falls and shakes from side to side with shame. He scrubs angrily at his eyes as the tears escape, before his face lifts and his gaze returns to you, his thumb stroking gently at your cheek.
“Your safety is the only thing that matters me, understand? If something happens again. If I- If I disappear or somethin’, don’ try to wake me, don’ try to help me. You get as far away as you can, understand? Do whatever you gotta do. I need you safe.” He tells you earnestly, his eyes drilling into yours as his hand presses into your cheek to affirm his point.
You can feel it from every bone in your body, Will needs you to hear him right now. He needs you to promise, and you’re just about to until he pulls his gun from behind his back and places it on the table beside you both. The weighted metal sounding heavy and ominous as it lands on the old wooden surface. Your eyes shoot to it in horror before flying back to Will’s.
“I wan’ you to take this. You do whatever you have to do to protect yourself, understand? Promise me, Addy.” His voice is desperate as tears spring to your eyes and mirror his own. You can tell this has been eating him alive all day as he tries to come up with a solution.
Your heart begins to pound as you shake your head slowly from side to side.
“No,” You whispers to him. “No Will.”
“I need to know your safe, even if that means from me. I couldn’ live with myself if I hurt ya again. I’d want ya to pull that trigger, Addy… If it meant keepin ya safe, I’d want ya to do it.” He pleads with you, his breath heavy and desperate.
You can see it in his eyes, he loves you so much, but he’s scared. You’ve never seen him this scared. He doesn’t know what’s happening to him. He doesn’t know how to stop it and he doesn’t trust himself anymore. He doesn’t believe in himself, but the thought of hurting you again is more than he can bare.
“I can’t.” You gasp, tears falling from your eyes, no longer able to hold them inside the rattle of your chest any longer.
“I can’t do that, Will.” You can’t even bear the thought of shooting of him. You were scared when he turned on you this morning, but the thought of shooting him scares you more. You can’t shoot the man you love. You can’t turn on each other.
“Shhh, it’s ok. It’s gonna be a’right.” Will soothes you as your tears starts to fall, drawing his head down to yours as he softly strokes your cheek, wiping at your tears.
“That’s not gonna happen. It’s not gonna come to that. I just need to know your safe.” He whispers to you softly, like he used to when you were a scared little girl.
Alone in the building after your father went off to the pub. Leaving you to fend for yourself and protect yourself against the other boarders in your apartment, some single men. Never knowing what would happen if someone tried to have their way with you, but Will was there, holding your hand well into the night, promising to fight off anyone who tried to lay a hand on you, before he’d sneak out when your old man stumbled home.
Will leans in and kisses your mouth, soft and deep. His lips pressing into yours in the old familiar way that always makes your heart racing, but your fear quiet. You run your hand up along his hair, but as he winces you instantly remember. Pulling back quick you finally get a good look at it, you see a jagged cut going into his hairline held together by blood and stiches. Tears spring to your eyes once again with the sight of it as your fingertips faintly touch the scalp around it.
“Oh my god Will, I’m so sorry.” You apologize profusely, your throat closing in around your words as you look at what you did to him.
Taking your hand from the cut, Will draws it to his lips giving your fingertips a gentle peck.
“Ya did the right thing, Addy. You defended yourself just like I taught ya. Nobody lays a hand on my girl, she’s got grit.” He smiles at you, trying to win a smile off you in return as he reassures you he’s alright, giving your fingertips one more quick kiss.
“It’s gonna heal up just fine.” He licks his lips and you can tell by the glint in his eyes he has something more to tell you.
“I talked to the Doc today like ya asked, after he stitched me up.” He tells you softly, trying to ease some of your concerns. Rubbing your hand between his before he laces your fingers.
“They don’ know nothin, babe. Nobody seems to know anythin bout what’s goin on in my head. They just tell ya to move on, put it behind you, your home.”  Will tells you, a hopelessness plaguing his eyes once again before his face drops down against your laced hands.
You watch as the muscles in his shoulders tighten and tense. He’s struggling. Facing the fight of his life and he’s facing it alone, but not completely. You need him to know you will stand against the gates of hell with him, by his side, and never waiver. If that’s what it takes. Just like he always stood by you.
“But I got somethin.” He sounds a little more hopeful. His face rising again to offer you a sad smile.
“I ran into Tommy today. An’ he gave me something that’s gonna help with the nerves, help me get some sleep…”
Your heart pains with Tommy’s name. It’s a bittersweet elixir, because you know, having seen him today, Tommy spoke with Will because of your talk. He did it for you and that only resurfaces all the old familiar guilt churning inside you as you try to protect Will from what you did and live with it yourself. But then Will’s searching your eyes and he looks so damn hopeful. And you can hear before he ever starts speaking, he needs you to have hope too.
“I’m gonna figure out what’s going on with me, Addy, with or without the Docs. You’ll see, I can be the man you want me to be. I can be who I was before.” He promises you and you can see it in his eyes, he needs you to believe him. He needs this as much as you do.
You nod easily, taking his word as you reach for him. Will pulls you onto his lap, into his arms, holding you desperately tightly against him as he buries his face against the comfort of your breast. You wrap him in your arms, stroking back the long strands of his hair as you place a gentle kiss atop his head and press your cheek to him.

The Sinner, the Saint & the Fangirl
Female archetypes in 3x12 & 5x01 aka The Great Meta Scavenger Hunt Round 4
In this weeks challenge our task was to take a closer look on both 3x12 and 5x01, with bonus points if our focus is on the female characters of the episodes. And obviously this meta challenge is not a comnpetion and the real prize is the friends we made along the way or so I have been told, but I also really wanna win this thing (whatever this thing is), so bonus points here we come. Instead of comparing the two episodes and/or their female characters though, I decided to place each of them in a certain category. Namely is that woman a sinner or a saint? (Or because this Supernatural, a fangirl.)
The sinner/saint dynamic is something that exists as long as movies exist, and of course it is the kind of stereotype reserved exclusively for women. It is very prominent in old western, but not limited to it. The names are already self-explanatory; the saint is a woman of virtue, symbolizing innocence and purity. They often end up being either a victim or at least the damsel in distress, and if they survive they are the reward for our hero. Opposed to that is the sinner, women who have a low social stand for whatever reason and are often portrayed promiscuous. They usually don’t survive the movie. And at least if you watch an old western chances are big our saint is portrayed by a white woman with light hair, whereas the sinner is almost always portrayed by a woman of colour (because next to misogynist those movies were also racist).
(As you can see during my time at university I also had a beginner’s course of film study)
Of course this kind of archetypes evolved over time and today female characters get to be more complex. That doesn’t mean they aren’t used anymore, or at least their basics. Because it’s something most viewers are familiar with, and whenever these archetypes appear the audience doesn’t need much time to decide how to view this character (basically: good guy or bad guy?). But it is also used to subvert our expectitations towards certain characters.
Some time ago I wrote a meta about Supernatural from a feminist point of view, with a special look at the Carver era (which you can read here). In it I also noted that during the first years (the Kripke era) almost all female characters end up in one of three categories: antagonist (sinner), love interest or mom/sister characters (saints). Especially during the Carver era female characters have become more complex, but even today it seems like Donna might be the only current female character who doesn’t fit in either character, but is instead one of the few female friends the Winchesters have (Jody is also a mom character, whereas Charlie was portrayed as a little sister). And looking back it made us realize that even in Supernatural early years there was a group that didn’t fit in either to one of the three groups: female law enforcers (which Donna is of course as well). (More on this here and here). But I digress. Going back to 3x12 and 5x01 we can place almost all characters in the sinner or saint category, with the exception of Becky, who gets her own category.
So let’s have a look.
3x12 Jus in Belo
Bela:
The episode starts with a reminder that Bela stole the Colt from the Winchesters. Dean assumes she just wants to sell it to the highest bidder, when in reality Bela tries to exchange the Colt for her soul.
Of course we as an audience don’t know this yet, and neither does Dean, so we just assume she is a horrible person, who is okay with hundreds of people getting possesed and causing mayhem, only to get some extra cash.
Of course one could argue that her goal only to save her own soul when the Colt could save so much more people isn’t any better. It is still a very selfish reason for her to steal the Colt. And it places her opposite to Nancy, who considers sacrificing her own life in order to save many more people.
If anything Bela is a great example of how our expectations get subverted. Until 3x15 we only think of her in terms of a sinner. None of her actions are selfless or in any way heroic. The way we view her character is only changed once we learn the reason she made a deal in the first place: to escape her abusive parents. It doesn’t make her a saint, but it removes her from being a sinner as well. If anything it places her near characters like Bobby or Dean who both suffered from abusive parents as well, but eventually made different choices (and is also a comment how different male and female characters with the same backstory are treated at Supernatural, just saying).
Nancy:
Nancy is probably the character who fulfills any stereotypes the most, mostly because she only appears in one episode and it is usually the recurring characters who are allowed to get more complex.
Nancy is a classic saint, no doubt. She is introduced wearing a cross and a rosary, telling us at first glance that she is very religious. The very first thing she hears about the Winchesters? That they are “ Satan-worshipping, nutbag killers”. Her fear of them is not just based on the fact they are criminals (she works at a police station, she is used to them), but that they are satanists. And yet it appears she believes in the good of the people after all, or otherwise Sam’s trick to get her close enough to their cell in order to steal her rosary wouldn’t have worked.
After Victor Henriksen and the others learn the truth - demons are actually a thing - we get this little exchange.
Dean: How you holdin' up, Nancy?
Nancy: Okay. When I was little, I would come home from the church and start to talk about the devil. My parents would tell me to stop being so literal. I guess I showed them, huh? That should hold.
It further confirms Nancy’s religious nature, as well as showing us that Nancy at least as a child divided the world into black and white, evil and good. We can only assume her morality got more complex over the years, as she wasn’t completely hostile towards Sam and Dean even when she still believed them to be the bad guys.
As the plot thickens Ruby appears and offers a spell to get rid of all demons, though it includes killing a virgin. Which is how we learn that Nancy is still a virgin. Interesting enough Ruby speaks first of a person of virtue, before she specifies her request that she needs a virgin. We can argue therefore that in Supernatural a virgin automatically translate as a person of virtue. Furthermore virgins seem to symbolize purity and innocence. The only other time virgins were brought up again was in 6x12, where again their virginity was tied to the mythology of the show, in that case dragons who were after virgins. (And then of course Eve, who chose the body of a virgin as her vessel, subverting the image of the pure and innocent. But furthermore also a body nobody had used before (so to speak) and the irony of course of a virgin mother.)
Of course this is also bullshit. Your decision wheter to have sex or not (and with whom and how often) doesn’t say anything about your virtue. Deciding to stay a virgin doesn’t make you a good person, the same way that having sex doesn’t make you a bad person (especially not as a woman, no matter what people say). But its an image so old - virginity = purity - that we buy it without a second thought. That is the way arechetypes work after all, because they are familiar.
It is also the reason why Nancy never becomes a love interest. Apart from the fact that she appears to be rather young, the fact that she is a virgin immdiately not only places her in the category of a saint but also regarding the Winchesters in that of a little sister.
The reason though Nancy is a person of virtue/a saint is not her virginity but her willingness to sacrifice herself in order to save all the people the demons have possesed. She is also doing this while everyone around her (Sam, Dean, Ruby, Victor) still argue whether it is the morally right thing to do, reminding them it is her choice.
As I said before Nancy functions here opposed to Bela. Whereas Bela’s actions are based on selfish motives, Nancy is willing to do the ultimate sacrifice, a completely selfless act. We could further argue her decision is based on her faith as well, as Christianty is about altruism.
The episode ends however with all of our sinners surviving (Bela, Ruby, Lilith) whereas our only saint dies, despite the fact Sam and Dean tried everything to save her. Portraying her as the genuine good person she is, her loss perhaps hurts the most.
Ruby:
Enter Ruby. The great thing about her character is that during the whole of season 3 and 4 she is written ambiguous enough that we are never quite sure in which category she belongs, until her final reveal in 4x22. She is without a doubt no saint, but the show up until the end of her story makes us wonder if she a sinner either. And we are reminded of this here, because the very first thing Sam says about her, is that she is here to help them, marking her her as an ally.
Ruby, or more specific her spell, represents the moral dilemma of the episode. Is it okay to kill one person in order to save many others? Especially if said person is willing to sacrifice herself?
It leads to a great display of the different kind of moralities Sam and Dean have ( @postmodernmulticoloredcloak wrote a great piece about it here). Sam is willing to think about it, whereas Dean pretty much says that Ruby’s choice is no choice at all.
Henriksen: We do not sacrifice people. We do that, we're no better than them.
Ruby: We don't have a choice.
Dean: Yeah, well, your choice is not a choice.
Dean’s position here equals Victor’s. You can’t fight monsters if in order to do so you become a monster yourself.
Dean: It doesn't mean that we throw away the rule book and stop acting like humans. I'm not gonna let that demon kill some nice, sweet, innocent girl, who hasn't even been laid. I mean, look, if that's how you win wars, then I don't want to win.
Ruby on the other hand thinks certain sacrifices are neccessary in order to win a war. She even points out that doing the spell would kill herself as well, a sacrifice she is willing to do if it helps the Winchesters. This particular part made me wonder if Ruby didn’t secretly count that Sam and Dean wouldn’t go through with her plan. Because what would have been her gain if she died? Her offering along makes us wonder about her true nature. If Nancy’s virtue is displayed by her willingness to sacrfice herself, can’t we say the same about Ruby?
This explanation makes a lot of sense. Ruby offers to sacrifice herself, therefore she places herself in the category of “good”. But it would also include the sacrifice of someone else, testing if Sam would be willing to consider it (he is, and we see the exact same dilemma in 4x22, where Sam kills a nurse because he believes it is the only way to defeat Lilith). She knows the Winchesters won’t go through with it, with Dean basically preventing it (because Sam only gives in to Ruby fully once Dean is gone). She still survives, leaving the police station once the Winchesters don’t agree with her plan and probably told Lilith where they are, to finish the episode with a great “I told you so”, showing them that her way would have been the right way all along.
Ruby: Don't thank me. Lilith killed everyone. She slaughtered your precious little virgin, plus a half a dozen other people. So after your big speech about humanity and war, turns out your plan was the one with the body count. Do you know how to run a battle? You strike fast and you don't leave any survivors. So no one can go running to tell the boss. So next time… we go with my plan.
In hindsight Ruby is a classic example of a sinner, including her seducing Sam. But up until the big reveal in 4x22 the show plays with our instinct reaction to her (she is a demon, she must be bad), making us constantly wondering in which category she fits (just as Bela’s story only gets complete with her last episode).
Lilith:
Aka the big bad of the season. I love how Dean after Ruby tells him there is a new big bad out there instantly assumes it is a he, until she correts him. You know, men don’t have the monopoly on murder.
This marks also the first episode we actually see Lilith, and it is interesting what kind of vessel she chooses: that of a young girl. Just as with Nancy we instantly assume the little girl to be innocent, only to get that expectation subverted as well. It is not the only time she appears as a little girl - she does the same thing in 3x16 (in a really creepy way I might add, causing the moral dilemma if it is okay to kill a child if said child is possesed by a demon).
We only see her in an adult vesel in season 4, still wearing white and having long blonde hair, both visual signs of purity, while also presenting her in suggestively way. Furthermore I might add Chuck’s vision in 4x18 of Sam and Lilith having sex, which by then has become a little theme, after sleeping with Ruby and presenting Meg initially as a love interest.
Lilith of course is a classic sinner. From a demon’s perspective though she could be seen as a saint as well, sacrificing herself for a greater goal (the rise of Lucifer).
5x01 Sympathy for the Devil
I don’t count Lucifer disguised as Nick’s dead wife here, because I think Lucifer mostly identifies himself as male.
Becky:
And this is where we add a third category, the fangirl. Becky is of course no sinner, but also no saint. For this episode she is merely a plot device. And another example of the shows long list of consent issues, as she seems to have a problem to let go of Sam.
Furthermore Becky is a comment of TPTB of how they view their audience/fandom. And it is not a very pretty picture.
When she appears again in 5x09 she is yet again just a plot device (getting the Winchesters to the con in the first place, telling them later about Crowley and the Colt). 7x08 is so full of consent issues I’m not even going there.
It seems like once Becky fulfilled her job (giving the Winchesters information they need) the writers didn’t really know what to do with her, and transformed her into a big joke about fans and their delusional way to see the world. Not really funny.
It took one Robbie Thompson to give us Charlie Bradbury instead, and later 10x05, to show us that fandom and fans can be portrayed in a much mure postive way.
Meg:
And the last one on the list. Meg’s journey starts as someone who looks like an ally/love interest back in 1x11, only to be revealved to be a sinner all along. She pretty much stays this way in the first five seasons, but eventually works together with the Winchesters in season 6, 7 and 8, as they have a common enemy in Crowley, leading to her sacrficice in 8x17. It doesn’t make her a saint of course, but again we can’t put her into the category of sinner either. What is interesting here is that she stays a sinner all along in the Kripke era and only becomes something more, more complex once Sera Gamble and later Jeremy Carver took over.
In 5x01 we see her in all her evil glory though. She kisses Dean against his consent (demons and sexual assault is a topic of its own), and arranges it that Bobby gets possesed and almost kills Dean. Like she could have killed Dean a million different ways, but she wanted his surrogate dad to do the job, punishing Bobby along the way.
Tl, dr:
Archetypes, such as the sinner and the saint, are used frequently in Supernatural, especially in the first five seasons. They are used especially if a character only appears one time, because the audience is already familiar with this kind of characters. Recurring female character tend to be more complex, with the show often subverting our expections. Also, sacrificing yourself is kinda a big thing.
