stultifera navis rerun AKA thinking about Iberia hours again because a lot of the Iberians have such fascinating relationships with the concept of home but specifically Thorns and Lumen are eating at my brain. like where do you call home when the place that is your home Just Fucking Hates You? Elysium's rewinding breeze specifically makes a point to hammers home how differently Iberia treats its Liberi and its Aegir

(which is especially interesting since this comes right after a conversation where Purestream commented on how despite Leizi being a high ranking government official, there are still some experiences that are universal for all Yanese people - because the experience of what Iberia itself is like isnt universal for all Iberians)

But all that being said, Thorns also straight up states that Aegir is not his home, and yeah, how could it be? How could a place you've never been to, never truly known, ever be your home? How could it ever feel like a home?

so where do you go when the place that you are from hates your people and the place your people are from is completely unfamiliar and alien to you? Thorns' answer at the end of the conversation with Aya is: my home is where i chose it to be. my home is where there are people I care about and people who care about me

in the complete opposite direction, Lumen's oprec asks: why do you still stay in a place that wants you gone? because the people of Gran Faro like Jordi well enough but when push comes to shove, they will want the only Aegir in town gone

and yet, when Rald the messenger offers him a chance to leave Jordi turns him down and when he's forced to escape Gran Faro after the people there literally try to send him to his death (or worse) at the hands of the Inquisitors he keeps trying to go back because like everyone in stultifera navis, Jordi is clinging to his own dreams of a golden age

but the shape of that dream is unique to every character and for Jordi, his dreams are deeply, inseparably bound to the Eye of Iberia, the legacy his parents left behind

and it's this dream of becoming someone great, of bringing about that golden age that his parents devoted their lives to help create that ties Jordi to this nothing town because despite everything, despite the mistrust of the townsfolk and the hostility of the Inquisition and the danger from the ocean, he simply cannot leave it behind

(or, because i personally dislike the official translation,)

"I just see this place as my home"

so yeah. not sure what overall point i was trying to make here i'm just. deeply in love with these stories about chosing what is and isn't your home, of saying you will not call a place your home because it has given you no reason to or saying you consider a place your home even though it has given you every reason not to. deeply unwell about them <3

I love your thoughtful SoC meta! I would love to know your thoughts on Kaz and Jesper’s relationship. Specifically, I adore Kaz but one thing in particular that always seemed so dark to me was that he enabled Jesper’s gambling addiction even though he obviously does care about him. Kaz is obviously willing to do a lot of fucked up things in service of his goals, but this one in particular, toward his own brother figure, I find sad. It’s kind of addressed during their fight at the end of CK but still feels a little unfinished.

I love Kaz and Jesper's relationship. There's sooooo much to dig into there (way too much for a single meta); it's super juicy and complicated, and one of the best complexities of it is that they often enable and feed off of each other's trauma. The pre-canon status quo is a situation where Kaz and Jesper are, in many ways, using and abusing each other as a way of avoiding dealing with their own trauma. It's a fascinating push-and-pull dynamic because neither of them are pushovers and yet neither one is particularly interested in facing their Issues™ head-on, and they both seemingly recognize that in each other and give each other an uncharacteristic amount of grace in helping the other avoid dealing with it.

In Kaz's case, that most often looks like enabling Jesper's gambling addiction and then repeatedly bailing him out of trouble under the justification of "he's loyal and competent, it would be wasteful to let the other gangs kill him." In Jesper's case, this looks like ignoring Kaz's countless and extremely obvious issues in favor of playing the loyal second. Basically, it's not just Kaz enabling Jesper's gambling addiction; it's also Jesper enabling Kaz's unhinged ruthlessness with little pushback other than a few snarky comments.

They also project a lot of their own issues onto each other! Kaz pushes Jesper away in part because he's projecting the grief and blame he feels over Jordie's death onto Jesper, but Jesper is using Kaz's ruthless pragmatism to escape the crippling disappointment of returning home to face his father's judgement for being a college drop-out, gambling addict, and gang member. And Kaz withholds praise and verbal declarations of trust from Jesper because he hates acknowledging that he cares about people, but Jesper uses Kaz's emotional detachment as a crutch to avoid dealing with his own commitment issues by pining after a boy he knows will never reciprocate his advances. This status quo is, of course, insanely unhealthy for both boys long-term, but where would we be if any of the Crows actually dealt with their issues in a healthy way?

That dynamic, imo, is also only possible because Kaz and Jesper have known each other for longer than anyone else in the main crew; Kaz may have let Inej in further, but he let Jesper in first. As far as we know, Jesper is the first person Kaz genuinely lets past his mile-high walls since Jordie died...but he very deliberately holds him at arms' length in a way that he does not with Inej (something that Jesper notices and is jealous about!). Being "the first" in this case unfortunately comes with a lot of baggage, and Kaz and Jesper would both lowkey rather die than talk about how much they care what the other thinks of them.

Kaz clearly didn't recruit Jesper looking for a friend or someone who reminded him of his dead older brother; he recruited him because he saw someone with a useful skillset who he preferred to be at his side rather than in a rival gang or dead in the canals. It's to Jesper's credit that he managed to break through those walls anyway, but there's only so much he can do in the face of Kaz's armor. And like Inej, Kaz's closed-off personality and actions hurt Jesper repeatedly. But he stays anyway, because he (like Inej) sees the boy underneath the mask that Kaz wears and cares a little too much to let him go:

“He wouldn’t—” Jesper stopped short, and then he laughed. “Of course he would.” Jesper flexed his knuckles, concentrated on the lines of his palms. “Kaz is…I don’t know, he’s like nobody else I’ve ever known. He surprises me.” “Yes. Like a hive of bees in your dresser drawer.” Jesper barked a laugh. “Just like that.” “So what are we doing here?” Jesper turned back to the sea, feeling his cheeks heat. “Hoping for honey, I guess. And praying not to get stung.” Inej bumped her shoulder against his. “Then at least we’re both the same kind of stupid.” “I don’t know what your excuse is, Wraith. I’m the one who can never walk away from a bad hand.” She looped her arm in his. “That makes you a rotten gambler, Jesper. But an excellent friend.” “You’re too good for him, you know.” “I know. So are you." -Ch. 17, Six of Crows

Kaz is unused to verbalizing the trust he places in others and actively in denial about how much he cares about them until Crooked Kingdom; he spends his time deliberately being cruel and pushing people away even as he proves over and over again that he doesn't actually want them to leave him. This casual assholery hits those closest to him (Inej and Jesper) the hardest because they are clearly trusted with his life but not with his heart, and that hurts them both.

For Inej, resolving that behavior looks like giving him an ultimatum ("I will have you without armor or I will not have you at all") and telling herself to walk away unless he meets her challenge. For Jesper? That looks like duking it out on top of the Geldrenner when they're both at rock bottom, because of course that's the only way either one of those boys is ever going to verbalize the tension that underlies their relationship. There's just a lot of baggage and mutual toxicity and unsaid words that neither of them are very interested in dealing with until everything comes to a head during the Clocktower fight.

I think we also forget that the Kaz-Jesper dynamic we see in the majority of the duology is not their normal dynamic: it's how they interact when Kaz is mad at Jesper. And a mad Kaz is, within the scope of canon, a pretty cruel Kaz, which is something that I think a good portion of the fandom likes to handwave away in favor of pointing towards Kaz's active attempts to be better in the back half of the duology.

Ultimately we only see the "normal" Kaz-Jesper dynamic for the first 12 or so chapters of Six of Crows (when the Dock Fight/Eyeball Incident happens) and the last few chapters of Crooked Kingdom. Those chapters are a really interesting look into what that relationship looks like when they're on good terms. It's clear that they're good friends, trust each other a hell of a lot, and joke around with each other quite a bit (the "saves ammo" joke in the parley chapter, their interactions during the Hellgate breakout, the "man with a knife!" "man with a gun!" exchange immediately after Kaz throws Oomen overboard, etc), but we also see the stress points: Jesper getting mad at Kaz for not telling him about Big Bolliger's betrayal, Kaz sending Wylan with Jesper during the prep chapters to keep an eye on him, and Jesper's bee and honey conversation with Inej on the Ferolind, for example.

These stress points are what fracture and crack in the aftermath of Jesper accidentally alerting the other gangs that they were headed out on the Ice Court Job and nearly causing Inej's death, and further buckle under the stress and pressure that Kaz and Jesper deal with during the following month and a half: the Ice Court job, Van Eck kidnapping Inej on Vellgeluk, Colm showing up in Ketterdam, and the Sugar Silo/Auction scheme.

In this way, I think Kaz enabling Jesper's gambling addiction is less about Kaz being actively cruel towards someone he sees the ghost of his brother in and punishing Jesper for the sins he percieves Jordie to have made (which is also true, and a meta for a different time!) and more about the weird balance of toxic mutual leniency Kaz and Jesper have allowed the other to provide for them for over two years...and how that leniency breaks down once it's not just Kaz's life or time on the line when Jesper fucks up.

Put more succinctly: for a long time, Kaz and Jesper existed in a toxic balance of enabling each others' worst impulses and behaviors, which was only able to be verbally addressed when they were both at rock bottom, desperate, and seemingly had very little left to lose. This conflict is somewhat addressed and resolved in the conversation where Kaz refuses to give Jesper the last of the parem and offers up a tiny bit of information about Jordie—showcasing his own growth and how he's finally trying to break the cycle by refusing to enable Jesper's self-destructive tendencies—but that level of tension is unable to be properly resolved in one single blowout argument. And I think it's deliberately left a bit unfinished because neither of them are really in a place where they're ready to address everything they've left unsaid for so long, even in the epilogue chapters.

However, we do see the beginnings of that reconcilitaion (Kaz asking Inej to tell Jesper that he's "missed around the Slat") and the story ends on a hopeful note regarding Kaz's commitment to removing his armor, which implies a lot about the resolution of that dangling thread. And of course, we know that by Rule of Wolves they're back to being thick as thieves and fucking around as usual, so clearly they hashed it out at some point in the in-between (and personally? I don't think it took either of them very long after the CK epilogue chapters to do that hashing out).

tl;dr: I love it when two traumatized and emotionally constipated teenage boys use each other to avoid facing their own personal problems and then get into a fistfight to avoid talking about how much they care about each other. Top-tier dynamic. Chef's kiss. I could talk about them for hours.

(warning: literary analysis ahead) i know i'm not the first person by far to say this, but there are so many similarities between kaz and wylan in six of crows and ESPECIALLY crooked kingdom.

there's obviously the big one of both of them having a re-birth type experience in the harbor, but that's not where the similarity stops. during my ck reread, i noticed that the reason kaz and wylan are in the harbor in the first place is because a father-like figure.

pekka rollins was a father-like figure to both kaz and jordie, and the book says this. the rietveld boys had just lost their father, and one of the big reasons pekka was able to scam jordie and kaz so well is because he provided them with a comforting and parental like space. kaz ofc eventually ends up in the harbor, and it can all be traced back to pekka rollins.

wylan has his rebirth in the harbor due to his father. the connection is more direct with his, but even then there are middle men and other things involved. but again, it can all be traced back to his father.

going off this thought, they both lost a close family member due to a father figure.

another big similarity i found that i feel like i haven't seen anyone talk about his what kaz and wylan are both motivated by: revenge.

wylan does not start off the books being motivated by revenge. he ends up in the barrel and with the crows out of a desperation to both hide from his father and because he genuinely has no where else to go. later on in ck, after wylan finds his mother at saint hilde, the book very clearly states that his motivation changes. at the begining of chapter 31, there's a scene where wylan is staring at himself in the mirror. there are lines that say, "What am I doing here? But he knew the answer. Only he could see his father punished for what he'd done. Only he could see his mother freed." which drives me INSANE!! because it's a DIRECT PARELLEL to things kaz says/feels about jordie!! in the chapter right before that (30) there's a line that says, "He'd found his way to shore, devoted himself to the vengeance he and his brother were owed." (there are other and better lines that reference wylan's "only he could *take revenge*" line, but this is just the closest one that comes to mind)

there are differences between their motives—you could say that kaz's revenge motive is more direct and violent—but there's also the fact that we see both kaz and wylan get their revenge in the book.

both kaz and wylan want revenge for one of their family members, and themselves, from what a father figure in their life has done.

they've also both been kidnapped by jan/held in captivity by him. i know this happens to inej too, but i think it's important that one of the first scenes we see with kaz is him negotiating with jan after being captured by him, and then towards the very end of the series, we (very simplified and on the surface) see the same thing happening to wylan. i know the two jan captivity scenes with kaz and wylan are very different, but i think the basic similarity of these scenes really attest to how far wylan has come and how much he's been assimilated into the crows.

there's also of course the part where wylan's expression is said to be something that looks kaz-like, which i feel also shows how far he's come and how he's truely developed into a crow.

in conclusion, as others have said, they truely are two sides of the same coin. they're so different but so alike, and i absolutely love how leigh bardugo was able to directly juxstapose wylan and kaz when they're so different on the surface.

Absolutely banger content!! Love it! When Kaz calls Inej "treasure of my heart" he's cheapening an otherwise meaningful phrase. Do you think he is being totally sarcastic or is he deadpanning his feelings to a degree? Because a little later he describes another time he said something cold-blooded to Inej and says to himself "in moments like that he thought she might hate him." Can the second quote be used as context to explain the "treasure of my heart" quote?

I definitely think that this is a prime example of using sarcasm as a defence mechanism, so although he comes across completely sarcastic - as confirmed by Inej’s reaction, which is to look pointedly at his cane and wish him a long trip down the stairs before she herself slides down the bannister - I would agree that to some degree he is voicing his genuine feelings. It could be viewed in a somewhat self-destructive nature, because by voicing these feelings in a manner that he knows will elicit a negative response from Inej he can use it as evidence for her not returning his affection and therefore use it as a reason not express his feelings in any real way - claiming that she won’t be interested, when actually he simply has a massively debilitating fear of being vulnerable bred in him by Rollins and the general attitudes/environment of the gangs in the Barrel (and arguably to some degree Jordie as well; by trying to protect his younger brother he doesn’t necessarily convey the full severity of their situation when they first arrive in Ketterdam, inadvertently leading to the belief that such vulnerabilities should never be spoken of or discussed becoming a highly complex and difficult aspect of Kaz’s character)

When Kaz comments “in moments like that, he thought she might hate him” it’s coming off the back of him effectively defending the appropriation of Inej’s culture. She is horrified to see the Suli Jackal masks on sale and being worn by pleasure seekers in Ketterdam, because they should only be worn by Suli seers and are “sacred symbols”. In return, Kaz says that he’s seen the seers “ply their trade on party boats and in pleasure houses” and that “they didn’t seem very holy”, and when she says that “they are pretenders” and “they’re laughing at you behind those masks” he responds coolly that he would never pay to have his fortune told, whether it was from a conman or a holy man. When Inej is visibly upset by this conversation, he comments that he wonders if she hates him, and I think that a large aspect of this is because he is the only person who knows what she went through to its fullest extent. And the specifically relevant aspect of what he knows here, is that Inej was forced to appropriate her culture herself when she was at the Menagerie (slight tangent, but so was Nina, it’s very interesting, I’ve mentioned it in a post before). Inej describes her room at the Menagerie to be a farcical mockery of a Suli caravan, she was forced to “donn false Suli silks”, and it’s even mentioned that the only reason she was ‘the lynx’ is that the Jackal masks were seen as unattractive - “but what man would want to bed a Jackal? So instead, the Suli girl - and the Menagerie always stocked a Suli girl - wore the lynx”. What a quote. What. A. Quote. Starting with the Jackal, it makes it clear that there are no lines that won’t be crossed, and that’s emphasised by other girls at the Menagerie wearing animals sacred to their countries such as the Fjerdan woman being the wolf, and that the only reason Inej didn’t have to wear an outfit similar to the one she’s so horrified by here is that it couldn’t be sexualised and exploited the same way the lynx could. And then we have “and the Menagerie always stocked a Suli girl”. Wow. That gets me every time I read it. There are two main things I want to comment on in this quote, so I’ll start with “stocked”. This singular world is so dehumanising; the idea that the women and girls at the Menagerie are seen as stock, produce, literal consumables that can be bought and traded and sold. There’s also the point that Inej herself is the one using this word, and I think it’s left purposefully ambiguous as to whether this is a satirical usage of the word on her behalf as a criticism of the culture surrounding pleasure houses and cultural appropriation in Kerch (although more specifically Ketterdam), or if it’s the product of indoctrination to this toxic culture - similar to Nina’s horror at releasing that the appropriation and disdain for foreigners she’s been surrounded by has actually led her to judge traditional Ravkan dress as old-fashioned in Crooked Kingdom (I think it’s chapter 13). The second thing about this quote I want to mention is “always”. “Always”. It so subtly introduces so early on in the books the deeply ingrained over-sexualisation of Suli culture, which is evidenced time and time again but most specifically in the ‘Rare Spices’ billboard that Inej describes un Crooked Kingdom. I could talk about that billboard for DAYS so I won’t go into it here because this is already a long post.

But I think it’s incredibly important that Kaz knows all of this when he makes these comments, every time he mocks her gods or her “depressing Suli wisdom”, he knows that he is part of a culture that dehumanises and sexualises and appropriates and reduces everything about who she is, and he knows that it’s hurting her, of course it would hurt her anyway, but especially hurting her because she was forced to do it herself as a cherry on top of the worst year in Inej’s life, a year made of unending pain and terror. But arguably this is once again all that self-destructive nature; the pushing her away, similarly to the sarcasm as a defence mechanism, because it is easier to hate than to love, and because if she hates him then he never has to be vulnerable with her.

Idk why I chose that gif-. Anyway I have had no inspiration or motivation to do anything. The mental illness is hitting. I am on my knees begging y’all to let me have this😭. No one’s born a vampire cause I don’t think vampires should be able to reproduce and in this universe how you’re changed determines what kind of vampire you are. I’ll explain later.

Kaz screwed over the wrong person. Unbeknownst to him, this person was actually a witch. The witch cursed him to have these symptoms we would call “vampirism”

Immortality so he would watch everyone he loves die. A lust for blood since he was a leech that led others like a lamb to a slaughter. Burning in the sun so he could stay a rat in the shadows. Ect. Ect.

This would've been terrible for anyone else, but this is Kaz Brekker we're talking about.

Also this isn't how nature works. Things can't be only good or only bad so nature gave him a few perks.

All it took was some practicing and getting used to then boom, he was living his best life.

He doesn't need the cane anymore, but he keeps it to trick others.

Genuinely thinks the witch that cursed him is the dumbest person ever because all the weaknesses he can get around. The sun? He doesn't go outside much and can have others do shit for him. Holy water? Does this man look like he goes to church? A wooden stake? What are the chances? Garlic? He prefers onion powder-

He's a traditional vampire so blood tastes good no matter what. I don't know if he'd go hunting himself though. He'd probably have another Crow bring him something, like bringing the homie Wendy's if you just got some.

Best part of vampirism is probably the animal control. It's the perfect distraction and this man is nuts so he'd probably have a rat jump on somebody with a phobia.

I'd say hypnosis but I feel like Kaz enjoys the thrill he gets from outsmarting everyone. Hypnosis would be so boring to him. It'd only be used if he absolutely needed to.

I think the part of vampirism he'd struggle with the most would be the feeding though. Not out of guilt but too many dead bodies make people raise a brow and that would affect business.

Kaz would prefer feeding on people who don't really have anyone. I know you're thinking “duh! That's so obvious! Who wouldn't?”. Jesper. More on him later though.

Kaz wants to go after opponents but knows that'll stir too much shit up.

I wanna say he refuses to feed on kids ‘cause it'd remind him of him and Jordie but this is the same man who threatened a little girl and said he'd kill all her dogs just to make sure she wouldn't snitch. And when Wylan was like “that's not ok” he was like “I could've killed her and made it look like an accident”, so idk. Man is deranged.

Kaz has red eyes because… uhhh… I want him to.

I think vampires should have another face when they feed and his gotta be the scariest. This is The Bastard of The Barrel we're talking about here. You gotta feel fear in your veins.

Overall, he's enjoying vampirism. Big mistake giving this man powers.

Inej Ghafa

Inej would get turned when she's at the Menagerie

One of the regulars came in but he was off. He was way more jumpy and sensitive to things. Inej knocked something over and instead of annoyance, he seemed to be in pain. Like his ears hurt.

She didn't say anything though. Tante Heleen would kill her.

Suddenly the man attacked her and bit her. She screamed but he covered her mouth with his hand. Inej did the only thing she could think of and bit his hand hard, drawing blood. The man was in pain and after a short fight, he snapped her neck and killed her.

Weirdly though, Inej woke up after some time. It made no sense to anyone. Not to the other girls, Tante Heleen, the doctor, anyone. Inej should've been dead. Instead all she did was crack her neck and describe the guy who did it.

The next day Kaz Brekker came and she introduced herself. The day after that, she no longer worked for Tante Heleen.

Turns out the vampire who attacked her was a newborn. He had some of the vampire strengths, like advanced speed and strength but he also still had human qualities. Like human skin, instead of the impenetrable skin older vampires have. Kaz was hunting him down because his uncontrolled killings were causing a ruckus, that's when he met Inej and noticed something was off about her. She smelt like death.

Inej turned instead of dying because when she bit him, it drew blood and she ended up swallowing it. Drinking a vampire's blood then dying was another way to be turned.

Because she was terrified when it all happened, as a vampire blood tastes better if it's from someone scared. The more scared they are, the better. If she drinks normal blood, it tastes fine but it doesn't make her as strong or taste as good as blood from someone frightened.

Inej doesn't really like going out of her way to scare the shit outta someone. Don't get me wrong, Inej ain't no punk but she sees it as “I'm scaring people for my own benefit? No thanks”.

During her newborn stage, Inej was not fucking with it at all. There were benefits but she hated the idea of murder. The only reason she started drinking is because she was starving and Kaz threw a random person in the room. When she snapped out of it, she was horrified and she was angry because Kaz knew what he was doing.

So she attempted to run away but the problem was the hunger obviously didn't stop. One day she saw a man she knew frequented the Menagerie. A man who was extremely abusive and had cut and injured the girls plenty of times. Again, she got angry. So angry she stalked and killed him.

A lightbulb went off. She didn't wanna scare innocent people but abusers? They weren't innocent. So that's who she targeted. Oh and obviously she returned to the Crow Club.

Only problem with abusers is unfortunately they have money and people looking at them so she can't go after a lot of them which leaves her back to drinking regular human blood. Sometimes she drinks from animals or steals blood bags.

Best part of vampirism is how nimble she is. Sure she was a great acrobat before but her speed and agility change is the best to her. She could do so much more without worrying about forever losing her legs in a stupid accident.

She's called a spider for a reason.

I don't even think she'd care for the other powers. Yeah they're there and she'll use them but she's not too concerned.

Worst part I think is the feeding but not for the same reasons as Kaz. Inej has a guilty conscience and she's also religious. I think the fact that she has to take innocent lives (when she can't get to bad people) would make her feel cursed. Like the Saints were against her or didn't hear her prayers anymore. How could she claim her heart belonged to them when her heart didn't even beat anymore? She was sinning often. It's not like killing on a job, that's when your back's against the wall. She's literally killing for her own selfish needs.

It'd take her a while to come to terms that she's killing for survival and she never asked to become a vampire in the first place.

Once she comes to terms with that I honestly don't see her using her powers for straight nonsense. She uses them to get jobs done and feeds when she has to. She's probably the one bringing Kaz take out when he's too lazy.

Idk why but I feel like she'd have purple eyes. I don't have a reason. Just roll with me.

Overall, she'd have conflicting feelings. The first couple years would be rough but she'd learn to embrace it.

Jesper Fahey

Jesper is my favorite Crow and my favorite in the entire show but my poor babe is not all the way there sometimes. He's not dumb by any means but ya know, sometimes he's in a silly goofy mood.

Jesper was turned when he was in college. Keep in mind, my boy was only there for what? A WEEK?

He lost at a game of cards and instead of beating him they were like “there's this book that a dead witch supposedly wrote. There's a ritual and everything, you gotta do it or pay me”.

Jesper was like “bet, I ain't no hoe” (probably not with those words) and did the stupid ritual which consisted of blood, rain water and some chanting and nothing happened, much to the disappointment of his college pals and him. The ritual was supposed to give him powers or something. Too bad.

Something weird started happening. Jesper was a funny guy and liked socializing but he swore he started feeling more energy course through him when he made everyone laugh. And when he walked outside, the sun burned. It left a mark and everything.

He started skipping classes to avoid the sun and the kids he knew were too busy to constantly visit him. Since he was alone for a couple days, he felt incredibly hungry.

One late night he was walking to get food when a lady fell hard. Jesper, being nice, ran over to help. That's when he noticed the smell of blood and it smelt amazing. Long story short, he ended up attacking her. When he realized what happened, he took a closer look at that book. He realized they didn't inform him about the negative side effects. And sure, he somewhat got it. What were the chances of it working? But since they made him do that instead of paying up, they knew there could've been a possibility of everything going left.

He had no idea what was happening and ended up leaving college. Not only was he out of money (that's why he was so glad he wouldn't have to pay) but he worried about who else he would attack. He ended up working for gangs and as we know, Kaz found him.

They ended up finding out that Jesper was special. Jesper was always the main focus in a crowd so when he became a vampire, that ability turned him into an emotional vampire. He didn't have to hunt people down and feed the old fashioned way. He could feed on people by absorbing their emotions when they felt a strong emotion, such as happiness. It made him feel amazing but it made them feel drained and depending on how much he took, they could faint.

Now he could always just bite people but absorbing emotions is bigger.

Best part of vampirism is hypnosis. If he's well fed and feeling strong, he can just hypnotize his gambling opponent into letting him win.

Worst part is probably the sunlight. Jesper likes nighttime, don't get me wrong, but the fact that he's limited to only moving around at night is nuts to him. Since he shouldn't be doing it, he wants to do it more.

Jesper has to be reeled in by Kaz when it comes to feeding cause Jesper honestly will go after anyone. The more challenging, the more fun. He has to constantly be reminded that the more challenging, the more chance of being caught.

He also reminds him that he doesn't have to bite people to feed but Jesper sometimes just likes the rush.

Probably makes a bunch of vampire puns and Kaz is tired of his shit.

He'd be even more on edge when it comes to his dad. It'd be even more of a reason to never see him again. He would only think about it when he 100% had his hunger under control.

Idk what eye color he'd have tbh

Overall likes being a vampire but the side effects are there.

Nina Zenik

After Nina took Parem, things didn't look good. It was obvious to everyone that Nina was dying.

Nina was in the know when it came to vampires. She honestly didn't care and didn't have any interest at first. But as she sat there slowly dying, she wondered what life would've been like if she asked to be bit.

The Saints seem to be listening because Inej walked in and said she wanted to help her. Nina knew how she'd help.

Inej was getting closer and Nina couldn't help but feel nervous. Suddenly though, she saw Matthias. Inej simply made her think she was Matthias, but Nina was so delirious that she actually thought it was him. She thought of their life together so far and what they could have in the future. Her thoughts started to slip towards something more lustful and that's when “Matthias” shoved “his” bloodied arm at her. She drank it then her neck was quickly broken.

She awoke soon after, beginning her new life.

Nina is a sexual vampire, meaning blood tastes the best when it's someone experiencing feelings of lust or orgasming.

Matthias experiences lust for Nina and has said she can drink from him but she doesn't trust herself. She's worried she got him out of Hellgate only to kill him later on.

Instead she flirts with unsuspecting men and women. No sex obviously and they don't taste as good as they could but just that little bit of lust adds something to their blood.

Best part of vampirism would be immortality. She's living forever with her family and doesn't have to worry about getting sick or dying again.

Immortality is also the worst part. Matthias has always said he has no interest in being a vampire and the thought of him dying makes her think she should've let herself die on the boat (until she changes him against his will but moving on-)

Probably targets men and women with low level jobs. Like the people who guard doors of some building, rich people go to. Or fishermen. People whose disappearance can just be chalked up to them being irresponsible.

Being a vampire is kinda in the middle for her. Not great but not terrible. Sometimes she wants to go outside during the day and can't. Sometimes she wants to eat something like garlic bread and can't. Sometimes she wants to wear silver jewelry and can't. It can be a real pain.

When Matthias is human she treats him like he's delicate, because compared to her, he is. They arm wrestle and he's down for the count.

The stereotype is that vampires sleep in a coffin but with how big Matthias is? Yeah, no. They'll just sleep in a dark room.

Nina doesn't exactly want kids, but with Matthias she wouldn't mind them. Now they can't have them at all though and that choice being taken away isn't fun. Honestly any choice now taken away rubs her the wrong way.

I feel like her eyes would also be red like Kaz.

Overall is half and half about vampirism.

Matthias Helvar

As we all know, Matthias ends up dying in Crooked Kingdom. He didn't want it to happen, but he accepted it. He knew this would be the end.

Imagine his surprise when he woke up months later.

Turns out Nina wanted to turn Matthias into a vampire but acted too late. She ended up finding a witch who was willing to do a ritual to return his spirit to his body. Side effects would be symptoms of vampirism.

As you can imagine, Matthias was very unhappy. Nina didn't have the excuse of “oh I panicked”. No. She found a witch and instead of asking for her future to be told, she whipped out his corpse.

As a vampire Matthias is a soul vampire. When he feeds it decreases the lifespan of his victim, sometimes even killing them. As he gets older he learns he doesn't even have to bite his victims, but he does have to be close to them.

It'd probably take years before he forgave Nina. Matthias, like Inej, is religious and thinks Djel can't hear him anymore because of what's happened.

For awhile he can't see a positive to this situation. When he comes around to it and starts accepting it though, I think he'd enjoy that he's strong enough to continuously help people.

Negative is everything for a while. Especially the fact he can't be near any holy items. Also immortality. Human lives are supposed to end, now his can't end without it being extremely painful.

Feeding wouldn't be easy for him either. Not biting them allows him to disconnect but he still knows what he's doing and that's hard for him.

He eventually would forgive Nina but would never forget what happened.

His eyes would remain blue but it'd be a lighter and more glowy (?) blue

Doesn't wanna participate in any vampire stereotypes. No coffin, no dark colors, none of that.

His feeding is the most discrete. Jesper's could be too but we know him. Matthias just kind of hangs around and feeds until he's full enough.

Matthias also drinks the souls of animals. It doesn't feed him as quickly or make him as strong but he was already a big and strong guy.

Overall is not having a good time. I think it would take years for him to accept his new life. After that, he's not exactly happy. He's just accepted it is what it is.

Wylan Van Eck

Wylan had a terrible relationship with his father, we know that. What everyone didn't know was that the family was holding a huge secret; Jan Van Eck was a vampire. He was turned after Alys became pregnant and thought things were great. Now he could be an asshole forever

Van Eck noticed how much better he felt so he thought if he bit Wylan, he'd be cursed of his dyslexia and could read.

He was wrong. Dyslexia isn't a physical injury so nothing happened. This made him angry and ended up leading him to hire people to kill Wylan on the boat to Ketterdam. As we know, Wylan escaped. Van Eck was sure he'd die because of lack of food or be exposed and killed. Either was good to him.

Wylan didn't die though. Wylan had only been a vampire for a month so his control over his thirst was terrible. He didn't wanna hurt people so he tried to stay away and hunt animals.

Not hurting people was easier said than done though. Ketterdam is full of people and jobs require you being around people. As you can imagine, there were a few slip ups.

Kaz recruited him not only to make bombs but also because Inej caught him feeding on someone. He just didn't notice she was there.

Once Wylan has his thirst under control, he prefers blood bags instead of actually hunting and hurting people.

He isn't sure what his favorite part of vampirism is since the things he loves doing (chemistry and music) don't require any vampire things. He likes telepathy once he knows how to block his own thoughts from people. It's efficient being able to “whisper” to other people and Wylan is a bit nosey. When you're gonna live forever, you're gonna wanna hear drama.

I think his least favorite part wouldn't be a specific part of vampirism. He'd just hate how he used to be. Whenever he thinks about how little control he had, it'd scare him. It shows how much of a monster he can be and he doesn't want that.

I wanna give everyone red eyes but I'll say his are orange or yellow. Why? Idk.

The type of vampire that legit forgets he's a vampire. Inej is like “want me to bring you back something to eat?” and he's like “oh sure. I heard this new spot just opened-”.

Probably was gonna walk outside for a casual walk and another Crow had to grab him by the collar and pull him inside.

“What's wrong?” “Wylan. The sun.” “What about it?.... oh”

This isn't me saying he's dumb, he just genuinely forgets. His mind is on other stuff all the time.

Vampires become his hyper fixation and he starts saying random ass myths about vampires at all hours

“Did you know people used to believe that you could trick a vampire by throwing things like rice at it? Supposedly it'd be compelled to count them all” “It’s 2am Wylan. Enough is enough”

Overall I don't think he has a strong opinion on being a vampire. Having his little family makes enjoying this new life easier.

idk why this in particular finally gave me inspiration, but FINALLY my mind isn’t completely blank.

Dr. Cimmerian

Yeah I think you two vibe pretty well. He doesn't really want a high profile when it comes to being in love just out of safety but little things he does gives it away pretty easily. Everyone just knows, y'know?

He comes to you for a plethora of research help even though you know he knows the answer and what's going on.

He likes coming down just to see you. He usually does this during slow hours just to respect your privacy and whatnot.

Will occasionally lessen your work load depending. If it's a restoration project or looking up certain histories and contexts, he'll find ways to make it easier for you. He cares deeply.

Agent Django

I don't think Django is like, the biggest showboat when it comes to love but he does like being a LITTLE obvious with his love. It kinda clashes with what you want but he respects your desires.

He's in the archives more often than not because of you. If something needs to be brought down, it's by his hand because he wanted to see you. He misses you when he's out and about.

Yeah he genuinely needs your help understanding some things. I think his hand is relatively steady too so he helps with some restoration stuff.

He will also help you update the databases and whatnot. Will bend rules for you because you do so for him. It really helps when he's out in the field and needs knowledge, like maps and stuff. Your abilities directly influence his, and vice versa.

Dr. Kondraki

He knows the archives better than he cares to admit. I almost want to say he's the reason you're in that position! And it was done because he loves you. He's very lowkey with his affection and love as well, so no worries there.

Essentially moves his office down to the office just because you're always down there, nose buried in a book as you attempt to preserve it. He values just being near you.

He always manages to route the most interesting artefacts towards you just to give you something fun throughout your shift. Asks a lot of questions just because he wants to hear you talk.

He's quite on top of your workload and while he won't be as helpful as Django, he offers support. It's awkward, but it's also the thought that counts.

Dr. Gunn

Gunn is quite sweet when it comes to love. He's not the most outward person about it though and this is just because he believes in work boundaries! So he won't smother you in love.

As for being an archivist, he has TONS of questions to send your way because he needs to understand what he's doing. His whole schtick is using SCP properties for everyone else's benefit, so of course he's going to be asking you questions based on artefacts and even trying to bribe you into letting him use those artefacts himself.

He's very helpful though. Will update databases for you, help you organize, and generally get lost in your work with you. He's got a knack for languages and will help you translate some texts that are much more historical than bargained for.

On being discreet, he finds ways to show his affection. I think one of his main love languages is touch, and it's usually during the late nights no one else is around he's able to love you.

I am currently working on a short story (probably 1 or 2 chapters once it's all done - I do have it mostly figured out, I'm just not happy with the pacing and Wylan - there are some other details I'm not sure on, but those are the big ones).

Working title is "Seven for a secret" (reference to the crow counting rhyme). It's a Crows centric-story, obviously, and I'm planning on shifting POVs, though mostly told by Kaz, Nina and Kuwei.

The premise is two-fold. One, all the Crows are Grisha and two, Kaz is Aleksander's son (I have had several discussions with the lovely @stromuprisahat about it and you can find pieces of it in her Kazimir Aleksandrovich AU tag).

Pretty much entirely show-verse, though padded out with the backstory details and worldbuilding from the books.

So, Nina and Jesper remain pretty much unchanged, save for some minor adjustments to put Jesper closer to his book counterpart (and also account for the 10 years added to his life) and Nina to an actually competent spy and Grisha who knows her shit. Kuwei is also mostly the same(he didn't ask for any of this shit), and he is the least aged up of the characters, being around 19.

(I am largely basing the Crows' ages on their actor's current ages, as they do largely feel appropriate)

Kaz, as mentioned above, is Aleksander's son, and he is roughly 30 (though he is treated as looking younger) and he's a shadow summoner. I don't fully have the backstory of how he happened figured out and it's not entirely relevant to the story. His backstory remains largely unchanged, though after Jordie's death, he does end up getting in touch with Grisha, who know Aleksander - they know of each other and have exchanged some letter, but do to the litaral wall of shadows between them, they have never met in person. Kaz recieved both regular education and some Grisha training from Aleksander's contact and only ended up joining with the gangs when he was in his late teens. He was still affected by the plague, due to being weakened by wasting sickness.

Inej is in her mid 20s. She is a Squaller, though it is not known about her. She met Kaz after she managed to run away from the Menagerie, when she was about 15, at which point, he arranges for her to not have to return. Though she does recieve some Grisha training in secret at this point, she mostly relies on the two talents she is natural at and does without much effort - sound manipulation and helping her balance. She avoids the more public use of her powers, for both money and safety reasons.

Wylan is around his mid 20s and he's an Alkemi, for pretty obvious reasons. There aren't too many changes to his backstory, save for adding 10 years to his age and the adventures he had in that time. Wylan was kicked out slightly later and his dad is somewhat more reasonable without the power-trip of holding the fate of the world in his hands. I have not quite figured out how to write him, so he is mostly the sticking point right now.

And now, for Matthias. I'm still not decided if I should fully commit to him being an adult and season Drüskelle or only age him up a little and keep him an initiate. He is a Corporalnik in this story (he's untrained, but leans more to the Healer side in his natural talents). He is aware that unusual things happen around him, but he attributes them to miracles or blessings of Djel, rather than being Grisha. He has a very good intuition for where people are (through his Corporalki sense), is very liked by animals (subtle and unknowling manipulations of their bodies), seems to heal faster than others and never gets cold. He also has a natural talent for syncing his heartbeat to the heartbeat of others, making him near unfindable for Heartrenders (unless they specifically can recognize his heartbeat). And I am absolutely planning to have a scene where Nina lists all of that to him, in the assumption that he knows what he is and is just a traitor and then realizing he genuinely doesn't know what she is talking about.

It is still very much WIP, but I do have the bones and it should be shorter than the other thing I promise yall before S2 came out.

I am also still open to short story prompts and ideas.

Honestly speaking, Kerch’s holidays were still somewhat alien and confusing to Matt, and he still didn’t quite understand the origins of Nachtspel, but that absolutely did not stop him from enjoying it nonetheless. And while he no doubt missed the food from Shu Han, he had to admit that he’d grown fairly used to Kerch food over the past couple of years. Perhaps even started to enjoy it. Especially the holiday-themed food and drinks. While he was fond of food at any given time, it just seemed that little bit sweeter and tastier during the holidays. Although he suspected that sharing it with the person he loved might have something to do with it, as well.

Despite his own, nearly child-like excitement, however, he hadn’t failed to pick up on Kaz’s melancholic mood at times. He hid it well, but not well enough. Still, like so many times before, Matt didn’t pry even if he had a vague idea of where it stemmed from. Instead, he simply dialed up his own enthusiasm and redirected Kaz’s attention whenever necessary. In the end, it had been, by all means, a successful day and Matt was almost unwilling to return to the Slat and let it end just yet. But the prospect of hiding away in Kaz’s room for the rest of the night with no one else around was enough to convince him to leave the festivities behind.

He was humming quietly to himself as they walked —some melody stuck in his head that a couple of musicians had played in the streets— and, for once, wasn’t really paying too much attention. So he was a little confused when they didn’t enter the Slat, but stopped short of the entrance and remained outside instead. The confusion didn’t last long, however, and he knew what Kaz’s intentions were as soon as he leaned the cane against the wall. So he offered no resistance when he felt an arm around his waist and gladly let himself be pulled into a kiss.

Even now, it still made his heart leap out of his chest and his knees grow weak, despite it being a fairly common occurrence nowadays. He was also acutely aware of the fact that they weren’t in the safety of their own four walls, and although there was no one around at the moment, it didn’t mean it was going to stay that way. Holding hands out in the open was one thing, kissing quite another and he had to admit that he was genuinely surprised by it. But… he sure as hell wasn’t going to complain about it.

Whenever they broke apart, Matt let out a content sigh as he cupped Kaz’s cheek and caressed it with his gloved thumb. He’d never grow tired of it. Of this. Of Kaz, of the way he made Matt feel. It wasn’t just happiness, and excitement, and comfort, but also like home. Like he finally found the place he belonged after spending his entire life feeling out of place.

Opening his eyes as the other spoke, it took Matt a second to place the name. Jordie. His brother. “Of course, he would’ve liked me. Everybody likes me,” he grinned, but it didn’t last for long and quickly transformed into a soft smile instead. “I hope so. I’m sure there’s nothing scarier than a big brother looking out for his little brother. I hope he thinks I treat you well enough and doesn’t feel the need to kick my ass.”

Pulling away from Kaz, he leaned against the wall, then reached out to pull him close once more. His hands reached up, one pulling off Kaz’s hat, the other combing through his hair, before coming to a stop in the back of his neck. “Is that why you seemed absent from time to time today? Because you were thinking of Jordie?”

Jordi is chaos wrapped up in a fancy suit, but good god, I love him to bits. I've legitimately never had a muse hit the ground running like he did. Usually it takes a while to find a muse's voice, but then there's Jordi up in here just screaming constantly, so it's like..I dunno, I can't help but be inspired to write starters and meme replies, and spew random headcanons across the dash, and all that stuff! Honestly never had that happen before either - I'm feeling a trend here slkjfsd

was looking over the teamup missions and the school briefs cause im starved for Monoma content and i discovered the Kirishima/Monoma tag on here it's #kirimono and while looking through it i have discovered that Kirimono is apparently like KiriBaku in a way and im honestly so down. There were several post that had me by the neck for them and not to forget to mention i was listening to JORDY - Is It Love? and Blonde at the time - Maisie Peters

They are so like break up every 5 minutes for eachother i don't know how to describe it, aggressive make out because they grind eachothers gears in the worse way yet can't keep their hands off eachother long enough to want to be anywhere else.

Someone said "Canonically Kirishima can’t stand Monoma but when we think about it Monoma is basically class b’s Bakugou, who if you remember Kiri actually had to warm up to at first then chose to be his friend. The only thing stopping them from getting along is literally just Monoma’s complex about class a and if they got to know each other I think they’d act get along in that petty boyfriends sorta way."

it's like a complex semi toxic relationship that only they understand whats going on. Like Kirishima is such a sweet heart but when it comes to Monoma he's the devil from the bible hope you get that snapcube joke

They love to antagonize eachother but it's mostly Monoma but i can see them doing this for the longest until Monoma is actually the first to catch feelings for him, he's all i want something from this, like i don't wanna be mean and hateful to this meat head the entire time i actually genuinely have feelings for this beefcake and i wonder what a softer version of us looks and feels like so the antagonizing takes a weird turn and he's not feeling it like he used to one day

Kirishima's confused Monoma is weirdly upset and it's like actually people in a relationship they don't understand. Monoma doesn't have it in him to actually bring up whats wrong with him cause he's kinda like Bakugo in the way that he can't admit his feelings at least to someone in class A of all people so he's just gonna ignore him or try and get him to figure it out himself

Kirishima is not smart enough for this but he uses his one braincell to hunt that petty boy down and demand whats wrong? Did he go too far? did he actually hurt Monoma? What?

Monoma would go on to explain to him whats going on and that he's actually got feelings for him and call him an idiot in a sophisticated manner.

This ship is just news to me man like i don't know whats going on i just got here

I feel like they would have the slowest slow burn ever when it comes to feelings, like sexual tension would be there as in every enemies to lovers, but to any of them to realize and ADMIT their feelings???? yeah… it's giving all years of high school until they confess on the last day during prom [except everybody else thought they were dating already]

I am very intrigued by this ship, pls come back so I can think about them some more, cause, for now, I'm still getting used to it but I'm gonna come up with some ideas!!

It has been a while

If anyone sees this, hi all, I think it's been a few years since I've used Tumblr, think this also is my first ever post! Think I took a step back at the end of 2018, I am not sure why, I just stopped using this website. A lot has happened in the last 5 years of my life. It has been a rollercoaster. Growing up is terrifying, and sometimes I wish I could go back to the days when I was younger, sitting in my childhood home on my laptop with my childhood pets. I want to experience college again, I want to know what it's like to stroke my pets one last time, I want to be able to protect my younger self, and say to her everything will be okay, even though deep down I still know it is not. I was diagnosed with depression back in 2017, even though I did not get told until 2022, alongside being diagnosed with PCOS. I started therapy back in 2018, and went continuously until a year ago. I want to go back, but I am unable to afford it. I have gone through a lot of grief and heartbreak, and it broke me. I am glad I had the memories with the people not in my life anymore, I hope they are healthy and well, but I really hope they understand I never meant any harm, and I hope they wish I am doing well too. I used to be such an anxious person, but after all of the grief I have gone through in my life, I am continuously numb and I find it extremely hard to care. I do care about animals, and I want to protect them, but I am being very self-destructive to myself and I wish I wasn't like this. I haven't felt true joy in years, I want to, I can still laugh and smile and enjoy things, but I do not think I can ever experience true happiness for a very long time still. I know people care about me, but I still feel so alone and used. I hate people presuming I am weak, and I don't like asking for help, I feel like I need to deal with things on my own, to make myself stronger, although I am a hypocrite as I do know talking to peers and having the help of loved ones helps so much, however, I greatly struggle, even though I am almost 24 years old. I've forgotten a lot of my past, and I am scared I will forget things which genuinely made me smile, I do not want to turn into an adult younger Jordie does not recognise, I want to turn into someone she can feel safe and happy around, someone she knows can help save animals. I know I am talking into the void currently, but I hope life is a little bit easier in another 5 years, by then I will almost be 30. I hope I will be a bit happier by then too. Life may be hard, but I am sure I can manage. I was able to get through a lot already, I just hope I can have a break from it all soon.

I absolutely adore your content! I was wondering if you’d like to share your thoughts on a few things I noticed in SOC and CK.

In chapter 3 of SOC, Kaz says that he is bothered by the fact that Inej can vanish so completely- not even leaving behind a scent. Why does this bother him?

In CK, after rescuing Inej from Van Eck, Kaz notices that Inej found soap to bathe with. What does it mean that he can notice her scent now?

When Van Eck is torturing her, Inej promises herself that she will cut out his heart. In the end, though, it’s Pekka Rollins’ heart she begins to cut out. Why Rollins heart? And what would Kaz do or think if he ever found out about what Inwj did to Rollins? Sorry for the long ask. Would love to hear your thoughts.

Thank you so much!! I’m really intrigued by these because they aren’t things I’ve thought about before, but I’ll absolutely have a go at tackling them!!

I think Inej’s ability to disappear, with that particular emphasis on her scent, could easily go hand in hand with the idea of everything Kaz has ever loved so easily slipping through his fingers. If Inej disappeared completely it would be as if she never existed in the first place, not even leaving behind a scent, and I think that concept terrifies Kaz because he has had to live for 8 years watching the world move on as if Jordie never existed, literally erasing him with Kaz barely clinging to life being the only thing that eventually leads Rollins to having any memory of the boys at all. When Inej goes to Rollins and the end of Crooked Kingdom, he identifies her not by her name but as “the Wraith” or “Brekker’s little Suli girl” and I think that’s once again commemorative of the way he doesn’t see people; he sees properties, money, opportunities. His immediate assumption is that Inej has not come of her own volition but has been sent by Brekker, and he also assumes that he can convince her not do it by buying her out - “Whatever he’s paying you, I’ll double it”. Although Rollins likes to glorify himself by comparing himself to Van Eck, he has failed to realise that Inej’s loyalty to Kaz transcends any cost or debt, whereas it took Van Eck all of three minutes to realise the way the pair feel towards each other - “I wonder which will prove more effective, torturing Mr Brekker or making him watch as I torture you”.

I therefore wonder whether noticing the scent of the soap is important because it cements Inej in the real world; in these moments Kaz is vulnerable because his mad pursuit of Inej has left him feeling as though the others can see exactly what he’s thinking about her, his soul laid bare if you will, that no matter how much he claims that it’s all about the job there’s no way he hasn’t heard the others talking about his reaction to losing her. In this moment, when he feels like everything could slip from his grasp and he could lose his sense of reality, it’s Inej - the very thing he’s so terrified of losing - that tethers him to the world by so genuinely and obstinately existing. That might be a bit of reach, I dunno

And then the cutting out of the heart - I love that comparison, I’d never noticed that!!!! That could absolutely be another red herring mixed in with a clever twist of foreshadowing (I made a post about red herrings and foreshadowing in these books if anyone’s interested it’s on my page). It could also link to what Inej said to Van Eck on the bridge at the hostage exchange: “You will see me once more, but only once”. They then see each other after the auction, when Dunyasha’s body is on the ground and Inej is stood on the roof watching them. I think it’s possible that these are different kinds of threats for different kinds of men; Van Eck feared Inej because he saw her as “a thug” and “a blight on this city”, his expectation of her were violence and brutality, so she instead meets him with dignity, eloquence, and grace that elevates her above her societal station and directly juxtaposes the violence and torture that he perpetuates despite his supposed status and civility. In comparison, Rollins expects that no-one can be as tough as he is, no-one is as strong or as frightening as he can be. He expects Inej to be a “little Suli girl”, an unworthy adversary who speaks in riddles of “depressing Suli wisdom” and whom, despite the talent that he does not deny her, is ultimately just “some scrap of a girl from the Menagerie”. So she meets him with violence; she proves her strength and her courage, particularly emphasised by Rollins’ realisation that he hadn’t actually felt pain for a long time, saying “No-one had dared to raise a hand against him in years”, and in doing so solidifies herself as far more than the narrow role he defines her by.

Anyway, those are all spur of the moment thoughts as I hadn’t considered these ideas before I read your question, but I absolutely loved writing it and it was so fun to think about so thank you very much, and I’m so glad you like my posts! :)))
