"Just So You Know..."
Bakugou Katsuki x Reader (Reader was mentioned as "she" once)
Disclaimer: Comfort fic, mentions of familial bullshit, but it's purely comfort. Reader speaks, like, one sentence in this whole thing.
Tumblr media
"Look, you know I'm shit with emotions and shit like that. But it's fucking annoying seeing you cooped up in your room wallowing in self pity, so speak the fuck up!"
You were not in a mood to talk to people. Hell, you didn't even want to talk to yourself, didn't want to walk around your room making up fake arguments and yelling at the air. You didn't want to talk, walk, cry, laugh, sing, anything. You just wanted to sit in silence and let your thoughts consume you.
But of course, your no-nonsense boyfriend wouldn't be okay with it.
You hugged your knees closer to you as your boyfriend sat himself on the floor beside you, back leaning onto your bed.
"I know you're upset, but I have no idea if it's because of me or someone or something else. So you need to speak at least a single word for me to understand what's going on and how to fix it."
You stayed silent and rigid, the only part of you moving being your eyelids when you blinked and your chest as you inhaled and exhaled.
Inhaled and exhaled.
Inhaled and exhaled.
Time seemed to be moving fast and slow, running and crawling, chasing and waiting. Merciless.
You felt Katsuki moving beside you but you didn't have it in you to look at him, talk to him.
I'm sorry.
It's not your fault.
I know I shouldn't be giving you the silent treatment.
This is not a silent treatment.
I want to talk to you.
Please keep talking.
I want to hear you.
But you stay mum.
An arm circles around your shoulder and you're pulled into a sturdy chest, as the ball you've rolled yourself into.
"It's fine if you don't want to talk. I'll make you talk later."
His voice softly caresses over you as your ears zone into him, away from the sound of your ceiling fan and the pit-pat of the rain outside. The lilt of his voice is careful, placed with his love, careful in a way he hopes to all the gods above that he doesn't upset you further while also awkwardly navigating and voicing his own genuine concern.
A comforting silence follows afterwards as you snuggle deeper into his chest.
"Are you okay with answering yes or no questions?"
You nod.
"Are you..." His voice trails as he blinks and looks away, composing himself.
'Don't get mad even if her answer may make you mad.'
"Are you upset... because of me?"
You shake your head no. A soft sigh of relief escapes him before he quickly catches it back.
"Was it your parents?"
Nod.
He nods back, understanding.
He knows how your parents tend to be and how you act whenever you encounter them. They say the dumbest shit about you, accusingly, denyingly.
And you believe them.
You believe the bullshit they say about you, how the rest of your family acts about it and how absolutely devastated it leaves what's left of your mental health.
So he waits, patiently, as you sit dead silent propped against him, breathing him in and trying to silence your thoughts.
"...Can you keep talking?"
And he does. He goes on about his day. How "fucking Shitty Hair" barged into the meeting room late as hell and embarrassed himself and Katsuki, how "stupid nerd ass Izuku" flopped while trying to take lead on a joint mission, how he went out on a "boring ass patrol" because the only thing he encountered was a petty thief trying to steal from an old lady.
The story about the old lady trying to set him up with her granddaughter as a form of gratitude brought a short giggle out of you which set him at ease, a small smile gracing his lips.
An easy silence fills the room, enveloping the both of you in it's warmth, despite the rain outside. The crackle of thunder that used to intrigue and excite you, now consoled you, singing you praises of yourself and the wonderful person next to you, who is going way out of his comfort zone to comfort you. The rain smiled at you, singing her lullaby as your eyes fall closed.
A soft kiss on your forehead brought an equally soft smile to your face as the voices in your head faded.
"Just so you know... whatever they said ain't shit. You're amazing and you're never ever a fucking burden, you got that? You're an amazing person and...I love you, god damn it! Don't let anyone make you feel like shit."
You allowed yourself a single tear as it rolled down your cheek. Your sorrow, your self pity, low self esteem, broken heart, hurt feelings, love, joy, satisfaction, comfort. All your emotions, packed into the single drop that dropped to soak into the heart of the man that held you closer than ever; a promise to never let go.
Tumblr media
Dutifully writing my own comfort fics because I have come to the realisation of the importance of them. I hope anyone reading this knows that they're loved, and no matter the shittiness of your situation, it will all pass eventually. After all, sad moments are what make the happy moments of life that much sweeter.
Lots of love!

Long-time listener, first-time caller. Thanks for all my dopamine! :D
Thinking about when the whole Sheen/Tennant saga started, there was a moment during the ITV’s This Morning show broadcast in May 2019 that has never really left my mind.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wP5fNffgE4&t=44s
Throughout the whole interview Michael seems to be openly flirting with David who responds with sheepish smiles. “I certainly love him, does he love me?” asks Michael looking into his eyes. “Oh, he wouldn’t possibly comment on that… that would be far too demonstrative for him” responds David stumbling over his words.  He is not the laid-back David we are used to now. The whole dynamic seems new to him, he seems to be at the stage of getting used to the feral Sheen.
There is a moment (at 3:39 mark) when Michael turns to David and (after looking him up and down) in a low, suggestive voice says: “Now that I've had a TASTE of working with David, I only want to work with David”. There is a big stress on the word “taste”, he even says it a bit louder as if he wanted to make sure everyone heard him but also that no one missed the very obvious subtext of that entire sentence. He also looks right at David's lips when he says it. Ok, I know we are all well aware how Michael has always been, even before the "David era" – he does like his double entendres.
But.
Look closely at David’s reaction – his eyes get visibly bigger and there is a quick, deep inhale – you can see his entire chest moving (you can see it really well in slow motion) followed by a quick startled look to the side and exhaling through his lips close together. He genuinely looks flustered as if Michael was revealing something he shouldn’t be at this moment. I can almost hear him thinking “Oh god, I can’t believe he just said that”.
The show host perhaps notices David’s reaction as well because she cuts off Michael quickly asking another question. So quickly indeed that Michael didn’t even get to finish that sentence. On top of that, as soon as she starts asking her question (with Michael still talking!) David blurts out a panicky high-pitched “yeah!” as if desperately trying to quickly take away all the attention from what Michael had just said.
For me that was always one of the biggest reasons why I suspected something more might be going on between them. It is very, very subtle but for me that is exactly why it’s so powerful – David’s reaction.
Do you see what I see?
Did they just start something more back then in May 2019? Were they very close to doing so? Is it all just a “joke”?
Answers on the postcard, please. :)
You’re very welcome! 😁
Tumblr media
Gosh this interview…
But does he love me…?
I think at the very least some crushes happened as early as BYT if not hooking up. David never hid that Michael has been on his mind ever since. Their stories about the days before BYT seem to change with time. It would make sense if GO just threw them back together and they were hit with those feelings again hence the intensity of them.
Or there was more. Way more than just crushes from the beginning. David did want to move to LA…
What we can be sure of is that Michael wanted to tell everyone how much he’s in love with David from the moment they got together at GO1. He had zero control of the way he was looking at David and talking about him. And that never changed. And David was so very careful because you can see he knew exactly what Michael was saying every time Michael slipped and nervously tried to fix it.
And to think that now, in 2024, David is full on feral not hiding anything, and Michael is talking about his queer struggles in the 80s, his first crush who was a man and how he processed it, and basically talking about David like they’re together and everyone knows.
Damn.

TL asleep? cool.
(long post, strap in)
i wanna talk about colin's wet dream. that was the most demisexual shit i have EVER seen. there's not even any sex. its just a romanticized, elevated version of their first kiss. its colin's subconscious wanting to replay the moment he fell in love with his best friend in the Most way possible.
lets break it down:
we got the same location of their first kiss. Complete with mood lighting and a fog machine. It’s giving pride and prejudice 2005
Penelope comes out (looking gorgeous, of course) to their rendezvous spot, which has been previously agreed on.
colin thanks her for meeting him, she doesn't know why he's asked her to come
he confesses his feelings for her
she reciprocates (this is the important part of this to me. ) her wanting him, makes him want her more (do you see where the demisexual colin energy is coming from? do you understand?)
they make out
he kisses her neck as she pants his name over and over (see my point above re: her wanting him makes him want her more)
he wakes up, absolutely shook
this is an idealized reimagining for colin: during their first kiss he was basically in shock, his new personality chokes on the reality and vulnerability of the moment
in the book he talks about how he tries to think of something witty to say but finds that no words are necessary, and there's no combination of witty banter or suave bravado that could help in that moment. the rake persona that he has put on up to this point absolutely fails him. but here, in this dream, words are crucial, the declarations of love are why its sexy! (demi colin is canon idc idc)
and its so important that this wet dream, the idealized version of this scenario happens like this. because we've also seen colin having sex with sex workers (and luke newton has talked about this) but his energy in those scenes is very detached, very focused on him and his pleasure with zero connection to the women he's with. he has two different threesomes (if you can even call the second one that, he's barely even looking at them) with four different women and we know nothing about these girls. they don't even get names. they don't matter, and its simply not. as. good. as the feeling of kissing pen. there is no connection
which is, i think, why he taps out during the threesome in ep4. he tries to go back to the devil-may-care attitude toward sex and intimacy that he had before kissing pen, he tries to return to that mask he put on of "the rake" and it just doesn't work! he feels nothing! in fact he feels disdain for the position he's in and the choices he's made!
the threesome in ep4 mirrors the outburst he has later at the club really well. like he's so frustrated with this position he's put himself in, the men he's surrounded himself with. he literally says "none of you are gentlemen!" "you're actually gross and disrespectful!"
a line that i love is :
"... it is tiring, is it not? The necessity imposed on us to remain cavalier about the one thing in life that holds genuine meaning. Do you not find it lonely?"
and they laugh! in! his! face! because these are men that feel perfectly fine sleeping with strangers and bragging about their "conquests" to their buddies
but that is not who colin is! he's still very young. and his experience with marina (who tried to seduce him and it didn't work, imo bc he just didn't feel that passion, that love that makes his relationship with penelope so different) has left him jaded, but not nearly as jaded as he wants to believe. even if he wants to be casual about romance and sex, he just isn't. this man proposed to marina after knowing her for what? a couple weeks? He is an All or Nothing type of guy. He has that Bridgerton 'when i fall in love i will only ever talk about my spouse' Gene
Now: some costuming details that i love:
Her hair:
(i know this is a stretch but go with me here) her hair is in slightly tighter curls than we've seen this season, which to me seems like a nod to colin liking (or at least not minding) her hair the way it was in previous seasons and maybe not caring as much as we might think about her transformation. but its still down and flowy and in line with her new style
Tumblr media
let's talk about this! dress! (it has genuinely been keeping me up at night)
the sleeves seem much more similar to the silhouettes of her costumes in previous seasons, not necessarily in shape but in style
the sleeves are bulkier, compared to this season's costumes, which while they might have been the same size and shape, they are made of much lighter material, giving the silhouette a softer, more mature feeling.
compare it to this dress from s3 ep2: it looks very similar with the sleeve shape and the floral appliqués, but in the dress in the image above, the appliqués are much more obvious, closer to penelope's style under her mother's tastes
Tumblr media
the point i'm trying to make here will be made more clear in a sec. what I am NOT trying to say that colin prefers her in her little girl dresses with loud designs, bright colors, and silly hairdos. he just associates those bigger, brighter, louder style choices with penelope.
And he has always liked Penelope. Even when he didn’t take her seriously as a potential partner, he always saw her as an equal. He never made fun of her silly dresses and questionable hair choices.
This has nothing to do with Colin but i feel like i should point it out:
there is something to be said about how her muted pastel color palette along with the more demure style that she has adopted shows that she is trying to Show Up with this social season, but as a wallflower, she is shy. she's always hated those brightly colored dresses her mother put her in, because no matter how close to the wall she clung, she was always visible. she was always vulnerable to ridicule.
but i don't think colin knows or realizes this because why would he think critically about the specific style changes she's made. and he probably doesn't really make the connection of the influence her mother has on her clothing. and around him, pen has never seemed all that shy. she's been confident and witty. if you pair her personality that shines around colin with her louder outfits, it seems more congruous
(take the scene from season 2 where we get the line "My purpose shall set me free") this is a side of penelope that no one, not even eloise!, sees
Tumblr media
what his subconscious knows is that he associates pen with vibrant, textured, and often 3-dimensional outfits, and his subconscious creates a dress that fits her new style, with a little more of that featherington flair thrown in.
the fucking tie in front: i feel like this is a very clear reference/ foreshadowing to the mirror scene
Tumblr media
for those of you who haven't read the book, the mirror scene doesn't actually happen, but colin tells penelope about a fantasy he has about touching her in front of a mirror
this is a pretty small offhand comment made while they're having sex for the first time but amongst book fans the scene has become pretty fleshed out i think, with fanfics especially
because the idea that it touches on is colin fantasizing about penelope seeing herself the way he does, as sexy and desirable (he seriously cares about her pleasure so much its sickening, I'm actually sick)
and although Book Colin doesn't mention it, the idea of him undressing her in front of a mirror has become a popular story set-up
i think the tie in the front sort of plays on the time period sensibilities of propriety: this is a time where in "good" society an unmarried man and woman would never touch skin to skin, its why all the women wear gloves most of the time. its why the scenes in season 1 between daphne and simon play on the excitement of removing the gloves: its a taboo thing
this is unrelated to this post but i need an explanation as to why pen isn't wearing gloves in a lot of her scenes this season, like the scandal that that would cause??? I'm assuming its representative of her growing into her sexuality; and bridgerton is a fantasy, not a historical nonfiction, but like some consistency would be nice guys bc i was so confused abt all the skin-on-skin contact happening. even with Francesca and Lord Samadani WHEN HE KISSES HER BARE HAND I WAS SO UNCOMFORTABLE FOR HER. especially because of all the glove-related tension in s1. but i digress.
so the tie in front is sort of a dare. even though its clearly an addition, and untying wouldn't actually remove her dress, its her (colin's subconscious version of her anyway) way of saying: "you could untie this, you could undress me if you wanted to" "i love you" "i want you"
and i think that's beautiful. this season is great and i will die on this hill.
Tumblr media
If you've made it this far, congrats! you're just as feral as me! come and gnaw on the drywall with me while i post fanfics inspired by this season: https://archiveofourown.org/works/55988977/chapters/142190584
chapters 1+2 of my new fic are up

I normally don’t like to talk at length about this cause I feel like idk actors first hand obviously but first is genuinely such a lovely and supportive person Khaotung is lucky to have him 🥹 such a nice boy
Oh, for sure! You sent this yesterday, but I feel like he was being even more doting today. Getting Khaotung water, referring to “Never Too Late” as his “favorite song by [his] favorite person,” and crying about how much he cares about him. (What else is new?)
But I actually want to take this opportunity to talk about how supportive Khaotung is because there was a troll in my inbox last week claiming First cares more about Khao than Khao cares about him and that is just so obviously not true. Khaotung is a much more private person than First, but he doesn’t care any less. He just doesn’t like getting emotional in public.
If you think back to Safe House, you might remember that at the end, when they write letters to everyone, First and Khaotung’s letters to each other were very short. I think one said “I love you” and the other said “Thank you.” And you could just tell, since both of them were like that, that they’d talked about it beforehand. I always imagined that was probably Khao’s doing and I feel like it says a lot about how he approaches fame. “There’s no reason for us to share those feelings with the rest of the world. Those feelings are ours.” He likes to keep his personal life separate from his professional one, which is something we allow Western actors, but deem Eastern actors rude for doing.
But even despite that separation, there’s still so much evidence of how much he cares. Literally that entire season of Safe House he was taking care of First physically—preparing his meals, feeding him, helping him with all the carnival games, even skipping swimming with the rest of the cast so that First wouldn’t be alone.
They’ve both talked about how much they help each other when they’re filming together, but Khao’s also talked about how he would call First and help him with his lines for Not Me for hours at a time. When the Shipper was airing, Khao watched the episodes at First’s house. They’ve always been partners, even before it was official, and if First heard someone accuse Khaotung of not being supportive enough, he would be the first to say that wasn’t true.
Sorry for the rant, Anon. I know you aren’t one of the people who believe that, but I’ve been thinking about it for like a week and your ask finally gave me an opportunity to address it without giving a troll a platform lol.

Who's gonna break my heart - Daishou Suguru x Reader
Friends to Strangers to Lovers - Title inspired by my current dopamine song "Dangerously Anxious" by MUNN
Words: over 8k so pace yourself
Tumblr media
- 18/17
You know something’s up when Suguru enters the gym with a girl. He’s already late, but the girl’s not wearing any gym clothes. So not a new manager.
She’s one year above you and you’ve seen her around. Yamanaka Mika or something. She’s cute and bile rises up your throat at that thought. No.
“Guys,” Suguru’s grin is genuine, playful, a little proud even, “I want you to meet someone. This is Mika, my girlfriend.”
Sō immediately stands guard beside you. He’s the libero and the second-closest friend you have on this team. Well, he might get bumped up as of today.
“Mika, this is the team.” He introduces them by name and the first-years blush under his praise. The third-years are not impressed, hitting him back with sly remarks that have Suguru blush instead.
Finally, he ends with you.
“And this is my best friend from childhood. I told you about her,” he introduces you and you have to fight everything in you not to snarl at him. Instead, you offer Mika your hand to shake, boiling inside.
She stays around to watch. You keep your distance.
When the first break runs around and you start handing out water bottles she slinks up beside you, asking for Suguru’s. You’re more than glad you don’t have to give it to him, couldn’t stand the risk of touching him right now.
You manage not to talk to him about anything other than volleyball until training ends.
He leaves quickly, aiming to walk Mika home. You stay behind.
“You okay?” Sō asks quietly as you gather your things.
“Mhm,” you nod, “Just peachy. Thanks for asking.”
“I don’t like her,” he promises and you snort. “You don’t have to. If he wants to get himself a girlfriend, that has nothing to do with me. She might be nice, you know. It’s not her fault he’s the way he is.”
Sō nods, but he doesn’t seem convinced. He asks if you want to walk home together but you decline. The quiet will do you good.
- 5/4
“Well, you stink,” Daishou declares with an air of finality. He’s small for a five year old, you’re almost the same height.
You don’t blink. He starts to grow anxious, his legs twiddling as if he has to pee.
“Why aren’t you crying?” He asks, clearly annoyed you don’t react like anyone else he’s met before.
“I was waiting if you’d come up with something better,” you say, “But I should have known you don’t have any good ideas.”
“Hey!” He yelps, “That’s not fair! That was a good insult!”
You snort and his lip starts to quiver.
“No way,” someone whispers behind you, “Is Daishou going to cry? What a whimp.”
“I’m not a whimp!” Daishou declares, eyes already reddening. “Take that back.”
You turn your best lazy stare at the person who had muttered that insult. In less than a second he backs away. You might not be a pretty little girl like your mother wanted, but you know how to keep the boys at bay.
“Come,” you take Daishou’s hand and pull him toward the far edge of the playground, “I’m gonna teach you some cool insults.”
- 18/17
“What do you want?” You ask instead of a greeting. Suguru snorts into the phone.
“Wow, what hellhole did you crawl out today?”
“It’s called a period, thank you very much.” That’s a lie. But he doesn’t like that topic, so it’s always safe.
“Whatever,” he grunts, “I just wanted to ask what you think about Mika.”
“I’m not into her if that’s what you’re asking.”
He gasps before laughing. “That’s not what I meant and you know it.”
“How did that even happen?” You ask, hoping against hope that he doesn’t hear the despair lacing your voice. He needs to believe you don’t care. “Did you pay her to do it?”
“Excuse me?!” Suguru’s affronted. “I don’t have to pay girls- You know I could-” He sighs before starting anew. “She asked me out. Can you believe it? I never had a cute girl like me before.”
That stings. But, you try to comfort yourself, he doesn’t know you like him. So maybe you’re still a cute girl in his head. Just not one he’s interested in.
“Miracles happen every day,” you tell him, working around the clog in your throat, “But I need to get going, okay? I still have homework to do.”
“Oh, okay, sure. I’ll see you in the morning. We can walk to school.”
“Yeah, okay.” You hope he forgets.
He doesn’t.
.
Suguru’s always been touchy. He was the kid who sat on his mother's lap until she pushed him off and though he made you swear on your life that it didn’t happen, he used to be the one grabbing your hand on the way home from kindergarten.
And it used to be your thing.
How he pulls on your arm when he’s excited or slings his arm around your shoulders, shaking you. How he presses his face against yours, eye against eye, to make sure you really got his joke.
But you can’t help but feel sick now, at the thought of it. Because it doesn’t mean what you thought it meant. And he’s probably going to do it with Mika now.
“Hey,” he pulls on your backpack as a greeting, dragging ice-cold fingertips along your neck. You shiver and he shows a wicked grin. “Still cranky?”
“Was I ever?” You snap back and he cocks his head, tongue slipping out as he musters you. It’s adorable and you hate yourself for thinking so.
“You wanna get chocolate milkshakes after school?”
“I’m fine,” you point out. “And you’re going to walk Mika home, right?”
“Are you jealous?” He asks and your heart stops for a painful moment until he laughs. “Come on, we’ve been best friends forever. I’m sure she’d like some Milkshakes too.”
And it’s like that, for days, and weeks on end.
Everything you used to do together is now something you have to share with Mika.
Until she breaks up with him.
- 9/8
“Can we play family?” You ask, a bit more confident in the coziness of your own bedroom. Your parents make more money than Suguru’s, you can tell. It’s no surprise he likes hanging out at your place more. You prefer it the other way, like the warmth of their kitchen and the noise, always someone around to talk. You like his older sister who teases him relentlessly and his mother who always calls you cute.
But you’ve got better toys so you’re hanging out at your place. And since it’s your place, you call the shots.
“Again?” He asks, but already picks up the Squishmallow you usually use as a kid. You own two and the other one’s sitting next to your bedroom door, playing dog.
“Today,” you declare your newest idea proudly, “I’m going to make a lot of money. I work in finance, like my dad.”
Suguru nods, gently nursing the Squishmallow kid in his arms. “Should I stay home with the kid then?”
“Yeah,” you nod, “You could make some dinner for when I come home. Do you want to have a Hobby, like Mom?”
“Oh yeah,” he grins, “I’m going to be a famous volleyball player on the side. They only have to train and win games, so I have more then enough time to care for our kid and the dog. Do we have a daughter or a son?”
“I don’t know. What do you want?”
“I want a daughter,” he lifts her up, squinting as if he can see a real kid in the soft pink plush. “And she looks like you.”
- 18/17
It’s Sō who tells you. He happened to walk past them on the way to training, couldn’t help but overhear.
“You’re such a bore, all you ever do is focus on club activities,” Sō repeats before you can stop him.
He opens his mouth to ask, but the gym doors open. Suguru looks positively mad.
“What are you doing?” He asks Sō, voice sharp. “This is supposed to be training. Start running!” He turns to you but you don’t even let him open his mouth.
“Suguru,” your voice is cold, clear and cuts through him like always. “Can I talk to you outside for a second?”
He huffs. “What if I don’t want to?”
“Then I’ll have to ask Coach to tell you to talk to me. You want that?”
“No,” he snarls, turning back to where he came from. “Hurry up, I want to train.”
“Warn the others,” you whisper in Sō’s direction and follow Suguru outside.
There’s a group of trees not far from the Gym that’s pretty much secluded.
Suguru swings as if to punch one of the trees but you’re faster, grabbing his elbow and pulling back.
“We still need your hands,” you huff, “Keep it together.”
“I don’t want-”
“I know,” you pull him in, hug him as tight as he allows. “I know.”
You don’t know how long you’re standing like this, Suguru trembling like a leaf. He’s always been a crybaby, even if he’s a little ashamed to admit it.
“Want me to egg her house?” You ask, wishing that just once he’d hug you back.
“No, that’s stupid.”
“I could put eggs into her shoes,” you point out. “Like I did with that girl that bullied you in Junior High.”
He snorts wetly. “That was amazing, but no, I don’t… I just wanted her to like me.” His face is pressed against your shoulder now and you can feel his mouth move against the fabric of your shirt when he talks.
“Maybe I should quit Volleyball.”
“Because some girl told you it was boring? Suguru, you’re better than that.”
“Mika’s not just some girl.”
You swallow thickly, unable to snap back for the first time since you can remember.
If only he’d say such things about you too.
“Well,” You manage after a while, “You’ll just have to win Nationals then. Show her what you’re made of.”
“Yeah,” he nods and pulls back, your sign to let go. “You’re right.”
He wipes his eyes and tries a shaky smile.
“Let’s beat Nekoma to a pulp.”
You roll your eyes. “You and that team. But if it makes you happy, we will.”
- 13/12
“Have you kissed somebody yet?” Suguru asks.
It’s a nice day out and you’re using your huge garden for Volleyball practice.
You don’t like playing it that much, but since Suguru doesn’t have that many male friends to play with, you don’t mind helping him out.
“No, you?”
“No.”
You wait, knowing he’ll eventually explain himself.
“Haizaki said it’s lame if you haven’t kissed anyone yet,” Suguru explains and leaps into the air to spike a ball.
You receive it, albeit a bit clumsily, and the ball tapers off into the shrubbery to your left.
“I told him that I kissed you,” he says instead of moving, and since you don’t really like Volleyball all that much you stay where you are. You have to move enough as it is already.
“Oh?”
“Yeah,” Suguru’s glaring at the shrubbery now. “Haizaki didn’t believe me at first. I showed him that picture from the festival last year. Now he thinks you’re too cute to be kissing me.”
You snort and drop to the floor, too lazy to keep standing. “Did you tell him how I bit your chin when you tried to put your arm around my shoulder for that picture.”
“No,” now he’s the one snorting. “But I should have.”
“Mhm.”
“Do you wanna kiss?”
You knew that question would come. Still, you don’t really have an answer to it.
You put your head on your knees and pear up at him, blinking through your eyelashes until he blurs into a shapeless blob.
You don’t really care about kissing. Or boys. There’s no one in your life that’s as close to you as Suguru is. You’re friendly with your classmates, but most of what they want to talk about is boring.
Maybe you don’t want to kiss. Or think about it. But Suguru wants it. So you can at least try, right?
“Fine,” you stretch out your hands, ask him to pull you up. As soon as you’re standing you press your lips to his.
It’s awkward, and not at all nice. His mouth is slightly open, a little wet with saliva or maybe sweat and his nose bumps almost painfully into yours.
Suguru squeaks as you move away, grabbing your hands to pull you back in. This time your teeth knock against each other and it hurts even more.
“Maybe,” you say, your face pressed against his shoulder when he’s still not letting you go, “Haizaki also never kissed a girl. Maybe it’s totally overrated and disgusting but he just thought you’d believe him.”
“You think?” Suguru asks, clearly downfallen by this failure. He always just wants to be cool.
“Yeah, you just need to be really confident when you tell him that you’re not interested in that. You know? Like, tell the class that Haizaki’s so bad in school because all he thinks about are girls. If you sound like you mean it, everyone will gang up on Haizaki. I do that too and it works all the time.”
His arms, clammy with sweat, loosen their hold on you. His adams apple is bobbing up and down as he steps back.
“Yeah, you’re probably right,” he says, voice still a little unsure, “Can we… can we play some more volleyball?”
“If we must,” you groan and his smile flickers back to life, this mischievous teasing thing you’ve grown fond of.
He pinches your side and moves toward the shrubbery.
“Fifty receives or you don’t get any ice-cream.”
“This is my house, you know!”
- 18/17
“Can I talk to you for a second?”
Sō’s eyebrows shoot up but you remain calm.
“Of course,” you say, following Mika out of your classroom and down the hallway into an empty classroom. You think this one’s reserved for Music Club.
“I wanted to ask,” she looks nervously to the side before continuing, “if you and Suguru… Are you… dating?”
You allow Silence to settle before you answer. The question hurts you just as much as it might hurt her to ask and if you can make her suffer a little longer, you will.
“No.”
“Oh,” she looks like she expected a different answer, as if she’s not sure where to go from here.
“Is there anything else?”
“Yes!” She surges forward, boxing you in. “I… I want to apologize.”
“For what?”
“For breaking up.”
“You’re talking to the wrong person then.”
She huffs, crossing her arms now. “Could you be any less helpful?”
“What do you want me to do?” You snap, losing the small of patience you had.
She slinks back, shrinking into herself. “I just… I kinda think it was a stupid decision. But I don’t know. Do you think Suguru liked me? Like, really liked me? You’re his best friend.”
“I don’t know,” you offer helpfully, “I’ve never been in a relationship. I don’t know what really liking someone means.”
And you’re being honest this time, even if she might not believe you. You only know that Suguru doesn’t really like you like that.
“Kaya… my friend… she said that maybe you’re into him and that’s why we broke up.”
You straighten, hands balled to fists.
“You broke up with him,” you hiss, “Don’t you dare pin this on him.”
“I know!” Mika howls, clearly exasperated now. “I know! I don’t know what I’m supposed to be doing. That’s why I’m asking you for advice!”
You stiffen, turn toward the window. You can think better when you’re not looking at her, when you can pretend she’s not looking at you.
If someone asks you about this, if someone ever dares to question it, you will deny it with everything you’ve got, but you can’t… you just can’t-
“Just come to our next game,” you tell her, voice tired. “We’re playing against Nekoma for the Qualifiers. He hates that team. You can decide there how you want to go on.” You turn and move for the door. But something just needs to be said, even if you don’t want to speak it into existence.
“And he’s not into me. Suguru, I mean. We’re friends. I just don’t have that many and I’m not used to sharing, that’s all.”
You leave her standing there, don’t turn back to look.
Instead, you go straight to the school nurse, wait until she calls your mum to come and pick you up.
You feel sick to your stomach and even though the Congee she cooks does little to soothe that kind of hurt, you don’t argue against it.
.
Mika doesn’t ask to speak to you again.
But she’s at your match against Nekoma, you can spot her in the crowd. When she approaches the team after your loss you’re glad that the team moves away in unison.
You don’t want to be there when it happens.
“Maybe you should date someone too,” Sō offers. He’s remarkably calm about their loss. “Kuguri and you are quite similar. You could get along.”
“What?” Kuguri turns to look at you, “I heard my name.”
“You have ears,” you praise him, “Good job.”
He scowls and turns away again.
You close your eyes, lean your back against the wall.
“I think I’m going to focus on school work,” you admit, “Leave the Club.”
Takachiho gasps. “Leave the Club? You?”
“What?” You scowl, “Like you care. You’re leaving this year anyway.”
“Yeah, but the Club needs you!” Seguro sidles up to you, “You’re our Manager.”
“Like you can’t fill your water bottles without me,” you snarl.
“I bet,” Numai mutters darkly, rubbing his chin, “If you’d get your ass on it, you could turn this team around.”
“Is that a dare?” You ask, stepping up to him. “Do you really think you can dare me to do better?”
“Absolutely! I bet you could get rid of these cheap tactics and get us to Nationals without Suguru interfering.”
Hiroo snorts. “You do know, Numai, that our dear Manager is worse than our Captain when it comes to trashtalking, right?”
Your smile grows as Numai’s flickers and fades.
“But,” he starts just as someone clears his throat behind you.
“Something going on?” Suguru asks.
Looking at him feels like a punch to the throat. You can tell that he’s happy without him having to say it. Mika’s nowhere to be seen but it still feels as if she’s wrapped around him.
The team lunges forward.
If anyone notices that you’re not taking part in their playful attack, they don’t address it.
You sneak away undisturbed.
.
Seguro’s named Captain a few days later.
Mika must have talked to Suguru because he’s not dragging you with them anymore. And while you had thought that there could be nothing worse than being the third wheel on one of their dates, being forgotten is so so so much worse.
School is boring you. Training is torture. You need something to occupy your mind.
- 18/17
“All alone?” Someone settles heavily on the chair next to you.
You don’t have to look up. You’d know that honeysmoothed voice anywhere.
“Not interested, roosterhead.”
Kuroo chuckles softly. “Don’t bite, Snakelet. I just want to make some friendly conversation.”
“Sure, sure. So you’re not here to scope out the competition?” You don’t take your eyes off the game.
Below your seats the game is reaching it’s Finale.
“Which one do you want?” Kuroo asks, mouth so close to your ear his breathe washes over your face. You don’t flinch.
“If I had to guess you want the Captain. He’s got an amazing defense. And with your stupid First-Year you’ll need some good defense.”
“Now now, don’t insult Lev like that.” Kuroo stretches, yawns and rests his arm on your shoulder. “He’s even dumber than you make him out to be.”
You can’t help but laugh at that comment. At least he’s self-aware.
“Go on,” you nudge your elbow into his side, “Tell me who I’m picking.”
“You want both Outside Hitters. They are both tall, broad shouldered and have a lot of energy and drive, so you think that would balance out your lethargic teammates. But that’s a risky move. One of them moves like he’s chugged ten cans of Monster before the game and the other feels like this game is the beginning of his murder-spree.”
“I need someone with Stamina,” you agree, “If I can get both of them, I will. If I can get only one of them, I’ll take Mr. Murderspree.”
“Good.” Kuroo grins. “I don’t want our games to get boring.”
You roll your eyes. “They’re not our games, Roosterhead. You’re graduating.”
“Ah,” he pinches your chin. “But I’m still watching, you know. From the shadows.”
You snort. “Sure. If that gives you closure.” You get up. “You can stay here if you want, I need to get going. First one to get a student to sign on your team wins.”
“Loser pays the drinks,” he calls after you.
.
You’re not sure how it happened or when. You don’t even know what to call this.
Suguru is your best friend, so Kuroo can’t be it. Kuroo is Suguru’s enemy and you’re pretty sure you don’t feel the same way about him, so he can’t be that either.
You’d call him an annoying cousin you’re not related to if these conversations wouldn’t sound so much like flirting nowadays.
In some weird way you think he understands you, or at least how your brain works. He’s pointed out, often enough to remember, that you remind him of Kenma.
And you’d argue against it, but he’s never once insulted Suguru in front of you. Talking shit about Kenma feels like disrespecting that truce. Even if you feel a lot smarter than a guy who’s cosplaying a bowl of pudding.
.
“Congratulations,” Kuroo sets your coffee down in front of you before taking a seat, “Both Outside Hitters and the Setter, I’m impressed.”
“He’s more of a glorified Pinch Server, but thank you.” You drag your spoon through the foam in your cup, destroying the artwork the barista created. You’re not in the mood for little foam hearts today. “How’s your new Captain doing?”
“Terrible, but that’s to be expected.”
“Same.” You let your eyes wander through the café only to get caught on something outside. You know that jacket, that haircut, that smi-
“Everything okay?” Kuroo peers down at you.
“Dropped my earring,” you claim, patting the floor. Outside Suguru kisses Mika goodbye and turns with one last wave of his arm before jogging of.
You get back into your seat, ignore the amused twinkle in Kuroo’s eyes and dare to think that you’ve got out of this alive - until someone appears next to you.
“Oh, hi!” Mika blinks with a smile, “Suguru just left, what a surprise! I haven’t seen you in a while.”
“Likewise,” you press out.
“Hi, I’m Kuroo,” Kuroo offers her his hand, “You’re Daishou’s girlfriend, right?”
“Yeah,” her smile brightens, “I’m sorry, I don’t know you, are you from Nohebi?”
“No,” he shakes his head, but doesn’t disclose his own school. You don’t flatter yourself with thinking it’s because of your glaring. “Just visiting a friend.”
“Oh,” Mika rests a hand on her chest, “Sorry, I didn’t know- of course, I’ll leave you to it.” She all but flutters away. You want to leave.
Kuroo, however, leans over the table, grinning like the literal Chesire Cat.
“She thinks we’re dating.”
“I don’t care what she thinks,” you snarl.
“Oh?” His eyebrows lift to where you can’t see them. “Ohoh?”
“Not like that,” you groan, “Get your head out of the gutter.”
“What? I could date you,” he twirls his spoon between his fingers, “Don’t all girls want an older boyfriend?”
“I think it’s more about wanting a smarter boyfriend,” you point out, “So I doubt we’d fit that scheme.”
“You wound me,” he huffs playfully, “But if you ever want to make someone jealous you can call me up anytime.”
“Thanks, I already hate that idea.”
- 18/17
It’s a shame you cannot skip graduation.
It’s not even your own but you know Suguru would never let you live it down.
So you force yourself to smile in every picture, pretending you don’t see the second button of his blazer missing.
Ever since Kindergarten he’s been one year above you. Ever since Kindergarten, you went out for ice cream afterwards, you paying for his on his graduation and him paying for yours the next year.
This year he asks if he can bring Mika along. You pay for him, he pays for her and when it’s time for you to pick your own ice cream all you want to do is go home and sleep.
But you can’t, so you pick the first flavor you see, not wanting to ruin the taste of your favorite ice cream with this awful memory.
“This is a cute spot,” Mika announces when you’ve found a spot outside under an oak tree, “We should come here for a date. What do you think?” She addresses you all of a sudden, “We could do a double date.”
Suguru chokes on his ice cream.
“Double date?” He asks. “Is there something I don’t know?”
Mika’s eyes widen. “Oh, was it a secret?”
“No,” you grind through your teeth, “It’s not a secret because I don’t have a boyfriend. Or date anyone. I just met someone I know while I was scouting new players.”
“Who?” He asks, brows furrowed.
“He’s got dark hair,” Mika explains, “Kinda messy like Kuguri-”
“Kuroo?” Suguru bristles, eyes turning wide. “You went out with Kuroo?”
Something turns to ice inside you.
“Yes,” you say, “I went out with him. Who cares?”
“He’s-”
“The Ex-Captain of a team that didn’t win Nationals. Wow. How outstanding.”
“My arch-enemy!” Suguru thunders, “And you know that.”
“Please,” you huff, “He barely knows you exist.”
“Take that back!”
“No.”
“I didn’t think-” Mika starts but you shut her up with a glare.
“I don’t butt into your relationship,” you clarify, “So you don’t get to butt into mine.”
“You’re dating-?” Suguru gasps for air, “Kuroo?”
“Does it matter? No. I was here to celebrate your graduation not to discuss my lovelife.”
“If you’re dating Kuroo we can no longer be friends,” Suguru bites out and you nod, get up and throw your ice cream in the trash.
“Fine. If that’s how you want it, I’ll accept. Goodbye.”
You march away, don’t look back. You don’t want Suguru to see that your eyes start to water as the ice inside you slowly melts.
.
You: If your house gets egged this week, Suguru thinks we’re dating.
Roosterhead: Oh? Buy me Dinner first.
You: I’m not dating you.
Roosterhead: I’m heartbroken. You good though?
You: I will be after we demolish Nekoma.
Roosterhead: Looking forward to you trying.
- 19/18
Seguro and Yamamoto are shaking hands but all you care about are the glowing eyes of their setter who rest on you, unblinking.
You’ve lost this time, but you’re not giving up. It’s only a Training Match after all and as soon as you’ve figured out how to balance out your team, you’ll be fine.
Still, it sucks that you’ve lost to Kenma. Of all people.
“Hey,” Sō nudges you with his elbow, nodding toward the door. “We’ve got a visitor.”
He didn’t need to tell you. You spotted Suguru half an hour ago but decided to ignore him.
The last two months have been filled with somewhat strained communication, mostly held up by Mika who’s trying her best to mend a friendship you no longer believe in.
He’s chosen Mika over you. You’ll be able to live with that, someday.
“Hey,” someone else speaks up from your other side. You turn to Kenma, who’s looking the other way.
“Yeah?”
“Kuroo mentioned something… about you…”
“So?”
He huffs. “I think I have an idea you’d be interested in.”
You’ll never admit that you only agree to buy into Bouncing Ball Corp because Suguru is watching you, but in all honesty, you’d probably agree to selling fridges in the arctic if it buys you a few more minutes away from him.
It doesn’t matter in the end. He stays until everyone else has left, hands buried in his pockets, nodding at the players that know him, rolling his eyes at those who don’t.
“What’s going on?” You ask when you’ve run out of reasons to avoid him, the gym empty besides the two of you.
“Can’t I come see my best friend?”
“I don’t know, are they in the room with us?”
He huffs.
“I mean you.”
“Could have fooled me.”
You turn away, take a few steps just to put space where there used to be none.
Suguru calls out your name. There’s something in his voice, a softer, more vulnerable tone, that makes you turn around. His shoulders are down and he’s staring at the ground and you know, just by looking at him, that he lost.
You don’t know if it’s a game or a thing, a person or an idea, but there’s something to it, the fact that he comes to you for comfort, that soothes some of the hurt.
“What did you do now, you fool?” You ask and maybe there’s something in your voice too, because he takes a few steps and pulls you in, rests his head against your shoulder where no one can see if he cries or not.
“Coach kicked me off the starting Line-Up,” he admits, “I’m just a pinch server.”
“So?” You ask, “You were a Pinch Server when you started at Nohebi. Those things take time.”
“Yeah,” he croaks, “But I also failed my first exam.”
“Mhm,” you hum, “Math?”
“Yeah.”
“What else?”
He huffs. “Who says-”
“What else, Suguru?”
“I can’t get a job. Like, I’ve tried but the only shops that might take me are the fast food joints around College and the hours there are terrible. And I need to train.”
You sigh. He hasn’t changed at all.
“Have you talked to Mika about it?” You ask and you know your voice sounds a little condescending right now, but he deserves it, right?
“No.”
“Why not?”
“I don’t want her to know,” he huffs, tensing as you try to push him away. “Please?”
“I’m not your manager any longer,” you point out. “You’re old enough to get yourself out of the mess you got yourself into. I’m not here to-”
“Please,” he repeats, but there’s a different tone to it now, “This is not why I came, okay? I just… you always know- Ugh, you just understand me, okay? I need to talk to someone who understands. Please?”
“Fine,” you let your bag slip from your shoulder, “You carry my bag and I’ll listen.”
And it’s a tale as old as time, you think, as you walk next to him, almost knocking your hip into his from.
Suguru’s not stupid. He just gets too much in his head about how things should be like until he can no longer see the big picture. And as much as he enjoys dishing out, he cannot take a hit for the life of him.
“So?” You ask when you reach the cross roads that separate your houses, “Feeling better?”
“Yeah,” he nods, “I- I wanted to say… If you want to date Kuroo, that’s fine.”
You balk. “What?”
“Yeah,” he grimaces, “I mean, I don’t like him, but if you think he’s decent enough…”
“I’m not dating him.”
“Kenma then?”
“Just shut up, okay?” You snarl. “It doesn’t matter. I’m not- I don’t care- You know, let’s just say you won’t mind and forget about this, okay?”
“No,” he shakes his head, “I want to talk about this. You’re my best friend. I’m sorry I neglected you. You’re doing a good job with the team, better than I did when I was Captain last year. And Mika… she’s sorry too. This is my idea, coming here and talking to you, but I know she feels bad too. She’s just… I think she got a little excited at the idea of us going on double dates. But it wasn’t right putting it out like that.”
“It doesn’t matter,” you repeat, too stubborn to give in, “But I appreciate it. What are you going to do now?”
“Oh, study for math, keep looking for jobs,” he huffs, dragging his hands through his hair.
“I meant today,” you snort and he blushes awkwardly.
“Then say it like that, idiot. You wanna play some volleyball? I have the time.”
“No,” you shake your head, “But I could use some math practice.”
- 19/18
It’s weird, still.
Suguru makes an effort to come over once a week. It helps that you can give him pointers in his math studies, but it’s not the way it was before.
He’s too touchy for a guy with a girlfriend. And though you’ve got your heart on a tight leash you can tell it’s much too easy to get lost in this until something reminds you of the truth.
So you do what everyone would do in your situation.
You ask Kuguri out.
It goes about as well as one would expect.
Sure, you could ask Kuroo. You’re pretty sure he’d do it, but you don’t want to ruin a perfectly fine friendship - if you could call it that.
Soon matches and exams turn up back to back and all you see of Suguru are the short messages he sends whenever he remembers.
He doesn’t forget your graduation, but ice cream just doesn’t taste the same way it used to.
You wish you could have stopped this ritual when it was still fun.
- 20/19
If someone would ask you for the name of your best friend, you’re no longer sure what you’d answer.
There’s Suguru, who you rarely talk to, yet know better than yourself most days.
There’s Sō, who’s taking the same Classes as you, who you’ve shared quite a few wins and failures with since attending Nohebi.
And then there’s Kuroo, who’s an absolute pain in the ass, but at least he’s reliable.
“I want to get paid for this,” you tell him when you hand over the CD. “I spent a while analyzing all that footage.”
“Ah, you love doing it,” Kuroo teases, moving to ruffle your hair, “Besides you always bet on Bokuto. I’m just helping you get your money through that.”
“I do not,” you grind through your teeth. You hate him sometimes.
“Do to,” he jokes, turning when something catches your attention. “The Barista has the hots for you.”
You snort. “Yeah, sure.”
“Absolutely.” Kuroo gestures with his hands before grinning. “See? He wants your number.”
“What?” You squeak, turning to look for yourself. The guy isn’t bad-looking at all. Maybe a bit less athletic than you’re used to. And he’s waving at you, gesturing in a way that can really only mean one thing.
“Well, I’m not giving it to him.”
“Why not?” Kuroo leans back, eyes twinkling. “Would you rather go out with me? Oh, Snakelet, I’m honored.”
“Fine,” you bite out, “I’ll get his.”
Kuroo’s still grinning when you come back, leaning over the table to look at your phone.
“Ah, so that’s his name. Now, I’m waiting. Text him.”
“Why?”
“Because I won’t believe you otherwise.”
“You’re sick in the head.”
“Mhm, you too. Now chop chop, we don’t have all day.”
If you say that your first relationship only exists because of Kuroo, you mean it.
.
Moriwaka isn’t all that bad. He might just be exactly what you need.
He studies Psychology, works part-time as a Barista, and collects Star Trek memorabilia, which means you have literally nothing in common and so much more to talk about.
And it’s nice, how he never once asks about Suguru - they’ve only met briefly - or Volleyball - he doesn’t like Sports - or your parents - he’s not into Finance.
He doesn’t push you either.
You don’t like being touched? That’s fine with him, he’s happy sidling up to you on the way to the Cinema - he bought two tickets for the newest Star Trek movie.
All in all, it feels a little more like having a new best friend, just that Moriwaka likes to tell you how good you’re looking every single day.
- 20/19
“I’m going to use the bathroom,” you say, getting up from the Couch.
“I’m pausing the movie,” Moriwaka announces, “This is the best part.”
You’d probably disagree with him if you cared enough, but it’s fine. Star Trek is important to him and he never once complains when you make him rewatch a Volleyball Game.
The doorbell rings just as you close the door behind you.
“That’s probably the Pizza,” he announces. You yawn.
The window doesn’t close properly but you don’t care, no one can see you pee anyway.
“What are you doing here?” Moriwaka’s voice floats up.
“I’m looking for someone.” You freeze, the voice too familiar. What’s Suguru doing here?
He says your name.
“Ah, she’s not here.” You can hear Moriwaka, your heart thumping awkwardly in your chest. Why is Suguru looking for you if he could just call you?
“No, no, I’m sure she’s here.”
“So what? She doesn’t want to see you.”
You fumble the door lock trying to get out. What’s Moriwaka doing?
It doesn’t take long to get out of the apartment and down the stairs, but it feels like half an eternity.
The door is open and you can hear Moriwaka before you can see him.
“I’ve seen your messages,” he announces, voice weirdly cold, “You only call to unload your baggage on her. You’re a pathetic, wet rag of a man.”
“And you’re any better?” Suguru snaps back, “You have no idea what’s between me and-”
“I’m her boyfriend,” Moriwaka announces just as you slide out the door behind him.
Suguru’s face turns perfectly blank at your sight, but Moriwaka isn’t lucky enough to get the hint.
“I’m not allowing you to talk to her.”
“I don’t think that’s your decision,” you tell him coolly.
He turns, surprise evident on his face. But no guilt.
“Listen, I’m just trying to protect you.”
“I don’t need your protection.”
He scoffs. “What? So you’re just going to let him drag you down again? He probably just lost another game. Or his girlfriend ran off or whatever.”
Suguru flinches. The breakup happened a few months ago, but he’s always been bad at taking hits.
“It doesn’t matter,” you tell Moriwaka snidely, “He’s my best friend. You don’t have any say in that.”
“You’re just in love with him,” he spits out, “Right? That’s why you’re pushing me away all the time. You don’t really want to date me, you’re just passing time with me hoping he’ll suddenly turn around and be interested in you.”
Suguru steps forward, fists balled but you’re a little faster, always more inclined to use your tongue instead of your fists.
“Go,” you tell him, your calm facade your biggest weapon, “Your movie’s waiting. I’m sure Captain Whatever has some inspirational quotes for you to flirt with next time.”
Moriwaka huffs, but he’s not dumb enough to take the bait. Or maybe he doesn’t care enough either.
“Go, be unhappy if that’s what you want.” He slams the door shut behind him.
-
The night is warm, the air around you humid and heavy.
Suguru’s looking up at a nearby street lamp, clearly uncomfortable with the situation.
“You were looking for me?” You ask, not ready to deal with the can of worms Moriwaka just opened.
“Yeah, I…” He clears his throat. “I got… I got a deal. For the Yotsuya Motor Spirits. I know it’s only Division 2 but they’ll let me finish College while I play.”
“Oh, Congratulations,” you step forward, not really sure what you want to do, just knowing that you want to be closer.
“Thanks,” he clears his throat again, “I was… I was talking to my parents about it and when they hung up all I could think about was that I wanted to tell you. We haven’t… we haven’t talked in a while, right?”
“Yeah.” You want to ask him who’s fault that is, but really, isn’t it your fault too? After all you were the one who fell in love in the first place.
“How’d you know I was here?” You ask when he’s fighting for words, tongue slipping out between his lips as he thinks. It’s a habit he’s had since you’ve known him and altough you’ve tried to hate it, it just endears him even more to you.
“Ah,” He drags a hand through the hair at the back of his head, “I was at your place but you weren’t there. And I figured you might be out with friends, but Sō said you’re out with your boyf- some guy but he doesn’t know where that is.”
“So?” You did not miss the way he stumbled over the term boyfriend. Your heart’s beating too fast to be healthy, but there’s a smug grin on Suguru’s face now, a look that tells you this story is going into a different direction now.
“You’ve been posting pictures of your favorite drink lately and there’s only one shop in Tokyo who makes it exactly the way you like it, so I thought I’d try over here. Remembered the dude’s name too, can you believe it?”
You laugh. He’s unbelievable, so proud of himself and his most basic deduction skills.
“You did great,” you tell him, “You wanna talk a walk? I need a bathroom and I’m not going back up there.”
“Oh, yeah, sure.” he ushers you along, “There’s a 7-Eleven down the street.”
-
And it feels like yesterday, hips almost knocking into each other, walking down the street.
It feels like you’re six years old again and Suguru’s walking you home from school, his hand clutching yours because even though he’s older, he’s a bit more scared of the world.
It feels like you’re thirteen, only beginning to understand that some boys are gross and some boys are cute and why your heart flutters softly when Suguru’s tongue peaks out whenever he’s lost in thought.
It feels like you’re seventeen, heart heavy yet ready to leap, calculating all the ways a confession could go wrong - and the one way it could go right - only to miss your chance.
“He’s right, you know,” Suguru points out in the too bright lights of the store when you come back from the bathroom.
He’s staring at the cut up fruits in the fridge and maybe he’s thinking what to get for a late night smoothie, but maybe he’s thinking the same thing you’re thinking about.
How all 7-Eleven’s are kinda the same and if they are, is this a place out of time? A place you can stay in without getting older, without the consequence of change?
“I really am a pathetic,wet rag of a man.”
“Hmm,” you make, stepping so close to him your shoulder brushes his. If you’d be a little braver, you’d take his hand.
If you could have a chance to get stuck in time, you’d take it if it meant being with him, hands not quite touching, bare faces reflected in the clear doors of an oversized fridge.
“I swear I’m not doing this because I’m lonely,” there’s a wetness to his voice that your ears are used to, grown fond of, even. The back of his pointer finger touches the back of your hand and his skin is warm and a shiver races down your back.
“And I should hate myself for breaking up what you had with that guy, but-”
You want to turn, look directly at him instead of his reflection in the glass, but you’re frozen in place, heart thundering so loud he must be able to hear it.
“I’ve had a crush on you since… since way before I asked to practice kissing. You’re the coolest person I’ve ever known, and I… I’m so tired of pretending that someone else can compare. I’m sorry.” He whispers the last words, hiccups softly when your hand grabs his, squeezes as tight as you can.
You’re going to cry any second, you know, but you don’t want to, even if it’s him you’re with.
You don’t want any tears to blurr your sight when you can look at him, see him, face flushed and eyes watery, all 179,5cm of pathetic, wet rag of a man.
“Do you want to play family?” You ask, voice a little rough, eyes a little watery too. “We can even get a dog.”
He smiles so wide you can barely see his eyes.
But when he leans in and kisses you, nose softly bumping yours and chuckles ringing through the air, you have to disagree with your younger self.
Kissing isn’t overrated at all. If anything, it’s probably underrated.
- 21/20
“Oh no, we have to play against you guys?” Bokuto’s voice’s too loud to ignore even in the bustle of a packed stadion.
Suguru bristles next to you but relaxes a little when your elbow digs into his side.
“Like they’re going to give you any problems,” Kuroo’s voice is smooth and sticky, clinging to your ears like caramel to the teeth. “Right?”
“Kuroo,” Suguru drawls, “You’re here too?”
“Well of course,” his grin reminds you of the famed Chesire Cat and your arm slings around Suguru’s waist, pulling him in.
He stumbles a bit, turning to look at you. Surprise, joy and then deep adoration wash over his face in a way you’ll never grow tired off. Suguru’s hand slides into the back pocket of your jeans and you know, would there be less people around, he’d be kissing you too.
“Aww, cute,” Kuroo sings, “You didn’t hear anything I just said.”
“Should we?” You ask, “If I want to hear an asshole talk I can just fart.”
Suguru snickers even as Bokuto howls in the background, clearly excited to have a new insult to try on someone else.
But Kuroo wouldn’t be Kuroo if you could best him with one lame insult.
“Funny,” he smiles, “You’re managing today too?”
“No,” you shake your head, “Just here for Suguru.”
“And we’re going to win,” Suguru declares, “MSBY has no chance against the Yotsuya Motor Spirits.”
He says it with conviction, but you know the chances of him winning are low. MSBY have been rising to the top ever since they drafted Miya Atsumu right out of highschool. Now they’ve got Bokuto too. If they’d gotten Sakusa Kiyoomi too like they’d been planning for months, you’d bought the consolation cake already but at least he’s insistent on finishing College before he starts playing professionally.
It doesn’t matter, though.
You’re not with Suguru because he’s got the best chance at winning the game and he knows it. And no matter the outcome of this game, there’s already a small velvet box at home that he thinks you don’t know about.
Like he could keep any secrets from you.
- 27/26
“That’s all,” you cut off your assistant’s questioning, “Everything else has to wait until tomorrow.”
“I understand. Have a good evening.”
“You too.” You cut the call and park the car, thinking for the umpteenth time that you need to start looking into the possibility of hiring a driver. Some of these calls get too intense to be held at the wheel of a vehicle.
There’s a Volleyball on the front lawn and a chewed-up dog toy. You drag your keycard through the scanner and stifle a yawn as the door opens.
“I’m home,” you call out over the pitter-patter of feet.
There’s Princess, your husky-mix and Kuroo, the little black Frenchie that his namesake gifted you at your wedding.
“Kitchen!” You hear a voice over the Princess howling. She’s always so excited to have you back home.
“Hey,” you can’t help smiling as you step into the kitchen, both dogs hot on your heels. Suguru’s standing at the stove, Hime tied to his front. Only a tuft of her dark hair is peaking out and you lean in to kiss him first and then the top of her head.
“How was it?” He asks, “Tired?”
“Extremely so, but everything’s going well. Even Dad is impressed. How was your day?”
“Mh, no, you’ve got to tell first,” he insists, pulling you into his side, “Because I wanna hear your voice a bit more before I tell you about the absolutely disgusting diaper change I had to go through today.”
You laugh. “Okay, so you remember Mamushi, our Client?”
“Mamushi with the thick eyebrows or Mamushi who slurps every beverage?”
“Slurper Mamushi.”
“Okay, I’m following.”
“So, this morning I got an email from him where he claims that we’re charging him too much. He gave us two options: Reduce the cost or dismiss the contract altogether.”
“Oh, that’s spicy. What did you do?”
“Well, remember how I had to cut our lunch call short? I met up with him for coffee right after and got down to business and you won’t believe it: he settled on a different contract that actually costs him more but he’s happy with it. Apparently he doesn’t like how it’s done nowadays and the old times were far better.”
“Amazing,” Suguru drops a kiss on your temple, “I would love to see the face of this man when he realizes how stupid he is. You’re a genius.”
You giggle.
“How was your day, then? Apart from the diaper catastrophe?”
“Well, I regret to inform you that Hime already has an admirer. Koji’s head over heels for her. I had to threaten him with bodily harm to get her back.”
“Oh, is that your libero?” You think, “The one with the Iro?”
“Yep, he died it pink last week.”
“Well, pink suggests he’s sensible. If Hime likes him too-”
“Don’t say that!” Suguru’s hands come down to cover Hime’s ears, “My princess isn’t going to date anyone until she’s at least thirty.”
“Mhm,” you lift your eyebrows, “And how are you going to explain to her that we had her way before we turned thirty?”
A blush works its way up his cheeks and you lean forward to sink your teeth into the flushed skin only to press your lips onto it right after.
“Love you,” you tell him, voice a bit raspy with emotion.
Sometimes, in moments like this, you can barely believe that this is how your life played out.

The climax of Malyen's two-person blame train
Siege and Storm- Chapter 18
Starting here, I've analysed Malyen's outburst about losing Alina to her importance. I've saved the end for new post, because Aleksander gets dragged in the middle of it, and uses it accordingly.
Tumblr media
Ironically, his tantrum only makes Alina feel so lonely she unwittingly reaches out to Aleksander.
Tumblr media
And he turns it against her, slightly twisting the facts she doesn't know how else to interpret.
Tumblr media
Why is he immediately offended?
Alina's obviously struggling with something, why isn't he worried FOR her? Why only bark "What?" and draw conclusion she's somehow treating him unjustly? They've just discussed she has a lot on her shoulders, but when she doesn't melt as soon as he kisses her, she's rejecting him?!
Even his body language is aggressive.
Tumblr media
How can someone, who claims he ~cares~ about Alina as a person, jump to conclusions so quickly?! And force their view, as if they already agreed on it.
He only cares about how will he look if she dumps him.
Reading it over and over- All the time I was standing there, going on like a fool.- the wording makes it sound as if he weren't speaking just about his declaration, but more generally.
Tumblr media
Cunty cunt pokes the wound while fresh, entangling it with his own words to make sure Alina remembers he's always right.
Tumblr media
Another unfunded conclusion.
It's funny how it's always Alina unable to control her pussy. It never occurs to him she might realize he sucks and dump him without another man involved.
... hoping that you’d miss ME enough to tell them all to go to hell. "Supportive" boyfriend, hoping his girl will get sick of her duties enough to abandon everything AGAIN, and run off with him, because nothing matters more than him.
Tumblr media
*giggling*
He just can't shut up, can he?
(Where else isn't he able to shut up?)
Tumblr media
Alina finally finds the courage to tell him about her hallucinations, and Malyen demonstrates, why was she reluctant to tell him in the first place.
This is one of many reasons, why I don't believe Alina's "happy" post-R&R. The only close person she has left is Malyen, who:
a.) Hated her being Grisha, so how could he ever get even close to getting a whit of understanding of what was taken from her.
b.) Hates the Darkling being as much as mentioned. He has no clue what's binding him and Alina together, and never wants to hear about any of it.
c.) Just the fact he basically calls Alina Darkles' whore, and a month, two later it doesn't occur to him she might still harbor illicit feelings for him.. there's a new guy, right?! She totally forgot about that first one...
Tumblr media
And he doesn't even let her finish a damn sentence.
He doesn't care what's wrong. He doesn't care what's going on. He doesn't care about Alina's feelings. She didn't fall over his neck, all excited, wet and willing, so she doesn't want him. She's just leading him on. Humiliating him... HIM, HIM, HIM...
Tumblr media
Funny, how Alina's either whore, or a pathetic inexperienced virgin (derogatory, if you didn't notice), depending on what's easier to shame her with.
Tumblr media
And Alina takes all the blame and necessary work on herself.
Alone, she falls apart. Shaky not only due to her duties, but lacking support of the only person she lets close.
Tumblr media
Awww, when they comfort the other...
No, but I think this is genuine. On one hand Aleksander wants Alina for himself, but he also realizes the amount of pain she'll have to weather as long as she feels "so strongly" and clings to people, who can never understand her. Or in SOMEONE's case don't even want to.

To me it's not really about morality if I have to be honest. I'm an Isaac Castlevania stan and he wanted to kill literally all of humanity. Like I don't care if you play evil characters or get off to immoral dom daddies or whatever. I've wanted to punt children in Skyrim into the sun for saying sassy shit to me so like. It's a video game where you kill people. I do not care.
To me, the "problem" (or rather, the thing I like making fun of the most) is just how very surface-level evil the Ascendant ending is, how obviously evil it is, how Larian pretty much beats you over the head with it using very simple and traditional storytelling techniques ("you'll have to kill 7000 people, including literal children btw"), and how some people still manage to twist it into something it isn't (a triumphant, perfect ending) despite Larian constantly blasting at you how bad it is. (And this isn't a critique, it works well and tropes are tropes for a reason, this shit works.)
And it's not even a unique setup. It's a classic dichotomy of want vs need. That's why they're contrasting endings. Astarion wants power, but he needs freedom and self-worth. That's the gist of it.
That's why I love the epilogue titles so much, because they perfectly sum up the endings. Radiant Hopeful, because he's his own light in the dark. For someone who's been a pessimistic asshole after suffering for two centuries, that's HUGE. Sunwalking Regent means he can walk in the sun, a symbol for everything he wanted, but "regent" implies he's a temporary ruler. Someone, somewhere, will come to de-throne him one day, and every day he fears that moment. His newfound power binds him to constant fear and paranoia, and he always searches for new ways to become stronger, because in his mind, he can never be strong enough.
Spawn ending is bittersweet: he lost power, he's still cursed with vampirism and can't walk in the sun, but he is free, he is his own person and he has hope for the future. He's decided for himself what he wants to do, and that's adventuring and helping others, lending his strength to those who do not have any, in his own weird way. He's physically weaker than Ascendant Astarion, and yet he's got strength to spare.
So what's the flip side? In the ascendant ending, he has power, he has control, he has money. But he's paranoid, he's controlling, and he's terrified of losing it all again, because without it, he believes he's nothing, so having it becomes his one and only purpose. It's also bittersweet, because he finally has everything he wanted, but he'll never again have what he truly needs.
These are like ... classic tropes. You can't have it all. You have to make a choice. The thing you think you want, or the thing you don't know you need. AA stans argue that actually, no. His endings are actually suuuper flat and uninteresting. Either he stays a weak and worthless and fearful spawn, or he becomes a strong and powerful and manly supervampire (let's not unpack the masculinity stuff here cuz that's a whole other bag of yikes). That's the argument they're making. That it's a black and white choice of either you pick the stuff where everything works out forever or the stuff where he's a loser lapdog who has to obey Tav because men must either control to be real men or are controlled pussies who can't do fuck (again, not getting into that here). And it's just literally not how the story is set up. None of the companion stories are this flat. If they were, there wouldn't be any argument or choice to make. No pros and cons to weigh. And it's just logically not a good gameplay mechanic, for a role-playing game.
And yet there are people who are just choosing not to get it, just the way I choose to believe it's a choice for most of them because I don't want to believe so many of these people are genuinely this stupid.
So yeah. That's why I block AA fans on sight. Not because I think their fetish is funny (though I do), but because I genuinely don't think I would have anything to gain from people who fundamentally cannot comprehend extremely basic storytelling techniques when they're practically spelled out for you with not-very-subtle methods. It's not even a thing of consciously choosing the bad ending where he's a very shitty daddy dom because it gets them off, that's literally whatever to me, but the fact that most of them genuinely believe it's somehow the better ending.
Despite. Well all of the shit I wrote above.
So yeah. It's not about enjoying evil characters, to me. People who do generally don't brush the actual evil part under the rug. It's the refusal or apparent inability to grasp extremely basic storytelling concepts lmao. And for what? Pff.

I find it so poignant in Epic the idea that all of Odysseus’s actions of ‘kindness’ so to speak always come back to bite him in the end (going to the cave to try and show open arms in trusting the lotus eaters, offering the wine to Polyphemus, sparing Polyphemus, his apology to Poseidon) except for his plea to Circe after denying her advances.
And you know why I think that is? Because it’s the only open arms approach that is completely sincere in nature.
Let me explain a little further, everything I’ve listed up to that point has been deception in some sort of way, they only went to the cave on the advice of the lotus eaters because they were desperate. I have no doubt that if given any other choice, Odysseus wouldn’t have gone. He only offered the wine to Polyphemus in an attempt to bargain for his and his crew’s lives and he ends up spiking it with lotus anyways so even if Polyphemus had let them go, he still would’ve ended up being betrayed in some sense. Him sparing Polyphemus is an act of spite against Athena and Polyphemus because he believes himself to be above any sort of repercussions and wants to taunt him for killing his friends. And finally, his apology to Poseidon is insincere at best because at no point does he ever utter the words “I’m sorry”. Not that Poseidon would’ve let him go anyways because I firmly believe at that point he’d already made up his mind to kill Odysseus and his crew but it’s the thought that counts and Odysseus clearly wasn’t sorry in the slightest, only sorry it came back to bite him.
Then we move to Circe and that’s when Odysseus’s luck changes when, after telling her that he will not cheat on his wife, she shows him mercy and helps him out. Because Odysseus was sincere in his affections for his wife and Circe, a woman who has been burned and abused by men in the past, has watched her nymphs suffer at the hands of men, and as a woman who deems all men as pigs because she believes they do not care for women at all, respects him for that. It humanises him.
It gives Circe some sort of hope that things could be better. Her line “maybe one day the world will need a puppeteer no more” may be immediately followed up with her declaring that instead one day it could need her more and things will get worse, but it gives Circe hope that she never had before. Circe already held the views of her final line, it’s nothing new for her to be untrustworthy of men at best, but for a moment, she wants to believe in a world where men are good and her nymphs would be safe even without her protection. A world where she would be safe.
All because Odysseus was finally being sincere to someone and genuinely poured his heart out which worked! Circe let his men go and helped them get to the underworld which she didn’t have to do at all, she could’ve sent them on their merry way and washed her hands of the whole incident but she didn’t. She wanted to believe in the love between Odysseus and Penelope and did everything in her power to make their reunion possible.
This makes his turn to becoming a monster in the underworld saga all the more upsetting because one good outcome to his kindness does not change others that got his friends killed so he completely gives up on it and embraces the role of being a monster who doesn’t care for anything but getting home, no matter the cost.
Even by the point of his plea for mercy from Circe, a part of Odysseus has already given up on everything Polites tried to in-still in him, but loves his wife so much that he’d never even fathom betraying her despite the fact that he believes cheating on her with Circe (unaware that her seduction is only a farce to kill him) will make her release his men and she’d likely never know that Odysseus had betrayed her. He still can’t do it, it’s Odysseus’s last ditch attempt to try and resolve things peacefully and he’s only doing it for the love of his wife.
It’s tragic irony that the very thing he believes in so sincerely, humanises him so much, and garners him the most help and sympathy is what leads to his downfall to a monster, his love for his wife and his son.

Changes to HOTD Season One
Tumblr media
I may get jumped for this but this was in my drafts after I saw someone else mention some changes they would have made to season one. So in light of season two arriving in a month, here are mine that I would added/changes to make the series run and little more coherently without changing the entire plot;
More highborn ladies around Rhaenyra and Alicent.
I just found it a little unbelievable that the Princess and named heir had a grand total of one friend. I like the idea of Rhaenyra and Alicent having a small core group of highborn ladies. I also think it would have been great to add to the dynamic of when their friendship falls apart.
Maybe they gravitate to Rhaenyra’s ‘side’ as she will be future queen, further isolating Alicent, adding to her eventual hatred/treatment of Rhaenyra. I think the fall out of Rhaenyra and Alicent’s relationship especially in the beginning needs a little extra kick, and this is a simple and effective way to do so. Not only was Rhaenyra given the freedoms Alicent never was, she also ‘took’ all her friends with her.
Once we made the jump to Olivia taking over as Alicent I would have gone full ‘book Alicent’, or at least once Driftmark happened.
I think the flitting between hating Rhaenyra and caring for her doesn’t work (unless you are a Rhaenicent, if we are being honest!).
They should have let Alicent fully believe Otto’s brainwashing, especially after the response to Aemon being marred. I genuinely believe that would have made Alicent even more sympathetic to the general audience as well, as I just don’t think the back and forth is really logical after that point, and the general audience just sees her as a hypocrite, not as another victim to Westeros’ patriarchy.
I think it would have been beneficial to see more Alicents scheming against Rhaenyra in court etc. It would have been very cool to see her go fully spiteful and powered by fear (mainly because of how Olivia played the small glimpses we did see at times, and they worked better for me than the more sad/passive Alicent we got at other times).
It also would have prevented having the foot fetish scene with Larys. I do not understand why that was the route, when they could have Alicent be a willing participant in those schemes, which is much more interesting. Also no ‘misunderstanding the prophecy’ scene, or the green council going the way it did, or Rhaenyra crying over a 20 year old piece of paper….
Either given Rhea more screen time, or went with the book version of events with killing her off screen.
I understand logically why they had Daemon kill her, but due to the lack of screen time, I just don’t think the audience cared about her enough to really hold Daemon to it. I think killing her off screening, and having Daemon find out in the Stepstones via letter, and a scene of him actually going to the Vale to try for his inheritance all smug without a care for his dead wife, would have been just as an effective way to show Daemon’s disdain and hatred for his first wife, if not more effective.
Daemon and Laena’s relationship.
I think it would have been nice to actually allow Daemon to be shown to be a somewhat decent man at certain times. I just think if canonically the character is described as ‘made of light and darkness in equal parts’ they should have made more of an effort to show that, have Daemon’s love for his family be his light. It also means that when he is dark, it’s actually more shocking and cruel as we know he is making an active choice to be that way, that at his core he is not a good man, despite the light we see with his family. It reduced Laena to a stepping stone plot point, and I just wasn’t a fan of that.
Inclusion of Laena and Rhaenyra's relationship.
I just think this would have played well into the fact that to Alicent, Rhaenyra, no matter how much she believes she breaks the rules, does what she wants etc. she is still constantly surrounded by people that love her, while all Alicent has done has lived dutifully and ended up in a loveless marriage with no one to turn too but Larys fucking Strong.
Bi Daemon
Because that is something I want, and I’m allowed to be selfish every once and a while!

Sharing headcanons with you makes me realize...despite Gunther being the oldest Nibelung sibling (and possibly co-king even in his father's lifetime, ala Rosengarten) he's also the least specialized. Hagen/Hogni is the intense and super-strong one, Gernot/Gutthorm is the brave one, Giselher is the young one, and Gudrun/Kriemhild is the sweet one, and Gullrond if she's there might be the smart one. And then of course he gets the most awesome brother-in-law/blood brother who goes around fighting his battles for him. In real history, there's also the fact that his father in fact established their kingdom on the Rhineland, so Gibich must have had some big expectations for his eldest son. While he's no slouch, and rocks some serious musical talents in Norse sources, there's always this subtle feeling of inadequacy to Gunther. He's always pushing himself too hard but it turns out it's never enough. He must have some crippling feelings of inferiority that he's keeping behind that kingly facade.
(And now I imagine Oddrun giving him a "stop trying to be your father, live for yourself for once" speech, that results in him very impulsively doing the sneaky sneak with her.)
... okay, that last bit about Oddrun is just the sweetest thing! And very tragic, too, but I guess that comes with the territory. XD But jokes (and angst) aside, it really does sound like a very genuine and important connection and I love it.
As for Gunnar/Gunther himself, well...
I have to confess that, once, a lot of my ideas used to lowkey fall into the uncahritable "Gunnar/Gunther is kinda useless/weak" interpretation. But thanks to papers like “Mit (un)lobelichen êren”: Authority, Gender, and the Cause of Siegfried’s Death in the Nibelungenlied by Casey Alexis McCreary (about specifically Siegfried, Gunther, and Brunhild in the Nibelungenlied), as well as some influence from dear @galarix and @ivylili, I ended up re-evaluating him a lot both in the continental and Norse sources.
In the latter, I now find it really striking how he did want to leap over the flames, he did want to risk everything to go about the whole thing the right way. But he couldn't, and after that things increasingly spiralled out of his control in all the worst ways... and yet, even in the end, even with some admittedly pretty bad choices in the middle, he was no coward and went out with literally as much dignity as Hagen in the Nibelungenlied, using almost the exact same trick as him to defy his enemies and captors to the end.
In the former, I now find him not a bad king for Burgundy at all, but actually rather clever and resourceful in some moments. The paper I mentioned above actually does a very good job at arguing that he is pretty good at politics, it just that both Siegfried and Brunhild show their royal authority through heroic feats, with impressive shows of brute strength and charisma, so at first glance it's hard to recognize his qualities when they're the ones taking all the spotlight.
But actually having your own, solid good qualities and value, even when other people know about them and acknowledge them, isn't always going to be enough to make you feel satisfied with yourself...
I do still think he has an emotional, hotheaded, and impulsive side that he only learns to control slowly through the years and still gives him trouble sometimes even later on, tho. And as I previously said, I also see him as someone who was forced to take on the responsability of both his kingdom and his family too suddenly, and at too young an age, and always felt the weight of it all hanging above his head like the proverbial Sword of Damocles after that. And, taken together, that would all boil down to a lingering sense of self-doubt, I believe...
When it comes to his place in his family... or rather, families, I tend to see him as the brother who tries to be a proper head of the family, to bring honor and glory to his bloodline while also taking care of his siblings, but sometimes that all becomes too much to bear, and then he feels guilty about it because, is it even okay for him to feel that way? (It's certainly human and understandable, imo, and I think other characters would tell him that, too, but he'd rather keep that all inside until he blows up about some other, unrelated issues due to all the tension that's been building up, lol.)
The harp thing in the Norse stories is fun because it kinda looks like it comes from nowhere to give him a little bit of an Orpheus moment (soothing beasts with music, anyone?) as well as adding that tiny little bit of hope in desperate times only to rip it away right after. But I do like it a lot. I headcanon an interest and a talent for music for both Gunnar and Gunther that, unfortunately, neither of them ever really had the time or the conviction to make into more of a thing. Lately, tho, the multishipper in me who OTPs Volker/Hagen but also loves Gunther/Hagen has actually been playing with the idea of Volker and Gunther becoming closer (either as friends/friendly metamours, or as two people who, perhaps without even really realizing it, are inching their way into forming a throuple with their mutual partner) through Volker encouraging Gunther to revisit his old interest and reconnecting with what made him feel so good about it. But, well, that's another story...
And now, a bit of bonus Wagner because god, those three messed-up Gibichungs: Ring!Gunther is, like, the personification of an inferiority complex. He's literally introduced worrying that all his warring and conquering may not be enough (will maybe never be enough?) to live up to his late father's name. Hagen's mere suggestion that he's been keeping mum about some possible new conquest that could bring him honor pretty much sends him into a panic. He flatters Hagen (the same brother who's illegitimate and only half-human state he'll later callously throw in his face when all's said and done) by saying he's the lucky one who got all of their mother's cunning, but is it all flattery (especially when Alberich pretty much confirms the similarities between Hagen and Grimhild, and he doesn't really need to lie about it after doing his best as far as we know to isolate Hagen from full human beings) or is there some genuine envy there? Brunhhilde literally just needs to tell him he's shaming his family by refusing to kill Siegfried to have him wrapped around her little finger...
(Not that Ring!Hagen and Gutrune aren't also walking talking inferiority complexes in their own respective ways. I am unwell about that family.)

The way some tom stans - or haters pretending to be stans - love to catastrophize the opinions of losers on social media needs to be studied. Because why did I see an anon on one blog say they "contacted tom's publicist" to tell them to do something about the "R&J pr disaster"?
Have y'all never followed any celebrity before? What disaster? The "disaster" of having multiple days of supportive crowds cheering at the end of each show? The "disaster" of multiple glowing reviews about the show from people who watched it - you know, people whose opinions ACTUALLY matter because they paid money to see the show? The "disaster" of the smiles on the cast's faces when they see the crowds waiting for them outside? No? Oh so you mean the "disaster" of random racists with 12 followers and a purchased blue checkmark and random tom haters who are jumping on the bandwagon to continue hating on him? The ones you guys CONTINUE to elevate by talking about them, engaging with their nonsense, or sending their tweets to active blogs... to do what, exactly? To coddle you and give you virtual hugs and comfort? To say "yeah I agree, tom is totes racist actually" because you are actually a hater but too much of a coward to hate directly?
Focus on the real people with real faces that the cast see cheering for them night after night. If you are being genuine, and the cast's mental health is your "concern", trust that they most likely know not to read that shit anymore. They probably have people filtering the actual reviews to them. If their physical safety is your "concern", trust that they have enough security to take care of them. If you are being honest-to-god "concerned" about tom's reputation, trust that you are blowing things way out of proportion. Tom gets tweets like those everyday and has been for years and he is just fine and dandy. Still getting work, still well-loved by people who actually know him, and still richer than any of us will ever be. Believe me when I say many many many many celebrities have had worse "scandals" and are still completely fine. Even the ones that are being called out right now on that block list will barely feel a dent in their reputations. As much as we like to pretend we're getting better, we still live in a celebrity-obsessed society.
Also, do take the time to consider that the silence of the production, of other cast members, and of Fran herself may be something that is happening on purpose. They see each other every day, work very (very) closely together, and surely have had discussions on how this whole thing will be handled.
Lastly, take the time to also consider that maybe you don't care about what Fran is going through at all and you just want tom to "do something about it" because you think it will give you moral superiority as his stan. OR you don't care about what Fran is going through at all and you just want to use this to fuel your hate boner for tom. Because trust me, the fans who DO care about everyone in the cast.. they are highlighting, retweeting, reblogging the glowing reviews and supportive posts and stories. They are posting pictures of Fran smiling on stage or at the stage door. They are talking about her talents, her stage presence, her beauty, her chemistry with tom. What they are NOT doing is posting hate tweets on their blogs so more people can see them.

Whispers In The Dark
Genre: college au, not all members mentioned
Relationship type: strangers to friends
Important Contents: Mr. Popular Chris Bang can't remember who he was before school. But with her? Maybe he might find a path that would lead him back to himself. But how far can he go before the rumors and his reputation become too much for her to ignore?
WC: 6.4k
masterlist
He was notorious. For what, no one could agree on, but he was well known around campus. Some would say it was his skill in bed, others would say his charms would keep him from any kind of trouble with anyone, professors and other students alike. His easy grace with people, especially strangers, made him the perfect showman for the school. He was at all the major events. It was like the head office paid him to be there, cheering when appropriate and constantly surrounded by his fraternity brothers. It was rare that he was caught without at least one of them within three feet of his personal space. It was also a well known fact that there was a roster kept hidden in the depths of his mind of those he hung around with in public, in private, and those he tossed to his brothers. It was like a hierarchy. All the girls knew where they stood with him and used that information against each other when they needed to.
Chris Bang, appropriately named, was the top man on campus. When he approached you, you couldn’t help but say hello. And if he struck up a conversation with you, it felt like catching up with an old friend. He always wanted to know how you were doing, how your classes were going, and he was genuinely interested in the answer. He asked about your family, your friends, anything that would spark up a conversation with you. And by the time he found something that you had in common, you were hooked. The way he listened to you made you feel like he was your best friend and for those minutes, he was.
He cared about people, truly. No one could act like that around people if they didn’t care about them. He was warm and inviting, like a hug when you really needed it or a warm shower after a day out in the snow. His gaze was that of a toasty fire, you could curl up in one or both with a book and live there forever.
He was across the courtyard, surrounded by his usual entourage of fraternity brothers in their lettered sweatshirts and crewnecks. Each one had a girl next to them, talking emphatically with their heads held high. The Chosen Ones for the day, week and each somehow prettier than the last.  They all seemed so engrossed with one another that no one dared interrupt their conversations.
“Hey! If you stare any harder, you’ll burn a hole in their heads. And those poor girls can’t afford for anything to fall out more than it already has.” Charlie’s words clanged around in my head until they landed and I burst out laughing.
“That’s so mean.” I shook my head at her, still smiling from laughter.
“Ask me if I care. Now come here and help me with this paper. I paid for your breakfast this morning for this.” I scooted closer to her laptop on the blanket she had spread out hours ago on the Great Lawn. She moved her coffee cup so I could sit where she desired and turned her laptop to face me. “How can I make this point more clear?” I glanced at the words on her screen, reading, until an obnoxious eruption of laughter interrupted my train of thought. I whipped my head back over to the cluster seated at the tables and traded my earlier look of curiosity to one of annoyance. Unluckily, or maybe luckily, this caught the attention of one of them. Chris made eye contact and nodded in my direction with that easy smile of his. I rolled my eyes large enough for him to see and turned back to Charlie.
“Well, I think you have to stop using so many descriptor words. It’s confusing to read and I can’t tell what you’re actually trying to say. It seems like you’re saying you believe that Chekov’s plays had clear and concise endings when they really didn’t.”
“I’m getting him and Tolstoy confused again.” She hit the ground with her hands balled into fists. “Which one wrote The Living Corpse?”
A voice appeared in front of our blanket.
“That’s Tolstoy.” Chris Bang himself appeared as if from nowhere, black backpack strapped on and hands in his pockets. His hat was backwards, the casual gesture fitting for the jeans and black t-shirt he sported. He was rarely spotted wearing something different, it was his signature look of sorts along with his shining eyes and curious questions.
“Yeah, that’s him.” I pulled my eyes from Chris to look at Charlie, who in turn was staring at me with a really weird look on her face.
“Thanks, Chris. Have you done this essay yet? I swear the longer I’m in Schwartz’s class, the more I hate my life.”
“I did, I just finished it actually. Took me longer than normal because of the word count requirement.”
“I know, it’s like he wants to kill us.” I snorted and picked up her textbook to flip to the page she would need. I look back up to find Chris’s eyes back on me.
“Are you in this class too? I don’t remember seeing you in there.”
“Oh no, I took his class last year. I’ve already been through that torture. Aced the class somehow.”
“That’s why she’s here, to make sure that my torture is just as bad as hers.” Charlie glared at me from the corner of her eye, making Chris laugh.
“Damn, you’re lucky. You’ve got someone to help you. I’m out here struggling to maintain my C.”
“Well, you’re welcome to join our suffering, Chris. I’m dying over this paper and she’s laughing at me.” Charlie shot me a confident smirk, seeming to have picked up on something that I absolutely was not putting down. I furrowed my brows at her, the thought never crossing my mind about inviting him to share our blanket or the day’s exceptional weather with campus’ Mr. Popular. But there my best friend was, offering him a place in our little circle.
“I would, but I’ve got an economics class to get to. But here, when you get a chance to come back out here to study, shoot me a text and I’ll come right over.” He stooped to rip a piece of paper out of a nearby notebook and a pen. He jotted something down and handed it straight to me, locking eyes with me as he handed it over. He paused, his face frozen in a soft smile and everything around us froze along with it. The wind stopped blowing, I paid no mind to Charlie, who I would find in a second was gaping at Chris, and I felt the spark that everyone felt when interacting with Chris Bang. The butterflies came in with a strong gust of chilly October air that unfroze the moment we were stuck in. He found his voice then. “Give me a call sometime.” he said softly.
“Yeah. For sure.” I whispered back against the rustle of the trees. Chris Bang winked at me and then he was gone. The piece of notebook paper was the only physical proof I had that he had been there and it sat in my hand until Charlie practically dove to reach for it.
“Did you just get Chris Bang’s number?” She opened it and showed it to me. The series of numbers wasn’t the only thing on it. They were accompanied by a short message in his very un-boyish handwriting. ‘Call me :)’ “You have to call him later today. And don’t you dare do it without me.”
“Call him and say what? That I’m happy to be on his list of girls? Or to put me down for the newest girl to be conquered? Girl, please. I’m not Rome, I am not to be ‘conquered’.” I nodded with certainty, resolute in my mindset. Charlie just watched me, smirking and pulling her mouth to one side.
“Yeah. For sure.” She mimicked my earlier words to him. Shaking her head at me and laughing no doubt to herself, she returned to her laptop and started typing. I couldn;t tell her that while I fully believed every word I had just said, that didn’t mean that the butterflies had gone right away. They stayed there, fluttering in the space he created. It hurt that I could feel how badly they wanted to be let out.
*
I stared at the number on the piece of paper for the next few hours, going back and forth on whether I wanted to act on his invitation. Who knew the weight of a scrap piece of paper was so heavy? On the one hand, he seemed nice enough with no outright bad intentions other than to study. Whether he needed the extra study time or not wasn’t up to me, nor was I in the mood to find out right this second. But on the other hand, was this just a way to find a new girl? Yes, he was selective when it came to who he was interested in and his level of interest was measured by how long he pursued you. Making him wait was the way to maintain his interest. At least, that was what outside speculation had agreed on with further research and trial-and-error. To those he wasn’t interested in, he was always polite about it, but that left room for them to conduct these experiments. And the results were inconclusive. He didn’t have a type, it seemed random at times, and all of the girls seemed physically different. Only one conclusion could be officially drawn: he liked girls. That was it.
Word that he had given out his number to his newest attempt hadn’t seemed to get around yet since I didn’t have girls eyeing me up and down all day. I was relieved since I hadn’t decided if I was going to use it yet, which was what I was debating now sitting in the shared room I had. My roommate, Rihannon (yes, like the song), was out, as she normally was. Ever the social butterfly, she joined a sorority the moment she stepped on campus and hadn’t sat down since. She was always going out with her sisters, going to mixers with the different fraternities on campus, or making new friends on a blanket of her own on the Great Lawn. All of these things were a perfect fit for her because she, like Chris, had the magnetic pull with people. They wanted to know her. And she wanted to know them too. She was nice, a friend until the very end, making her the perfect fit for the social scene. But her social expertise did me no good if she wasn’t here.
So I was left to my own devices. Charlie hounded me until I ran away to catch the bus to get home.
“You better text him tonight! I want to see him at our spot by noon tomorrow if he can! And you better have proof if he can’t!”
I had rolled my eyes at her. Typical Charlie behavior, sticking her nose in every business I had. This time I couldn’t blame her though since she had been present for this cosmic event. Is that what this was? A cosmic event? Had the stars aligned for this moment to happen today of all days? It was up to me if they had. And as the time grew later, the minutes were passing by, counting down until Charlie would kill me tomorrow or not.
Ugh. Fine. You win this time. Both of you.
To: Chris Bang
I left the message open, thinking for too long about what to say to this mystical man that gave me his number out of blue. I debated texting Charlie to ask what I should say, but I knew her answer. ‘Just text him hi! Nothing scary about that.’ How wrong she was… I took a deep breath, letting my chest rise and fall fully before picking up my phone again.
To: Chris Bang
Tomorrow, under the tree next to the Lewis building. That’s our normal spot. No later than noon or else I’m toast.
I threw my phone across the bed, somehow thinking that if I held it when he answered he would know and he would think I was staring at my phone and waiting for his answer. I mean, I was, but he didn’t need to know that.
My phone lit up across the bed. I couldn’t read what waited for me on my home screen and I could feel my heart beating faster the closer I drew to my phone. It was like a ticking time bomb, even when I knew it wasn’t. I crept until I could see that the waiting message was indeed from him. And what I read when I opened it made those butterflies that had finally quieted start up again.
From: Chris Bang
We can’t have that, now can we? ;) I’ll be there with my books. What are we studying?
I could and couldn’t believe it. Some part of me that was simply a girl was ecstatic that a boy was flirting with me, according to Charlie. The other, more cautious part that was protective of that girl, was wary. I wasn’t looking for another heartbreak and I was not wanting to set myself up for one.
To: Chris Bang
Why don’t you come and find out?
Damn it.
*
“Why am I nervous? I didn’t talk to him last night. But then again, I didn’t buy coffee for him either.”
“Charlie, I swear to god.” The chilly September air was unusual for so early in the month, but it was that time of year here. The mornings were colder so you wore a jacket and by midday, you wondered why you even brought one in the first place. “The girl asked me if I wanted a mess-up and you know I’m not one to turn down free anything. So I said sure. End of story. I wanted a muffin too but they didn’t have any left. The girl said some guy came in and bought them all. I did not buy him a coffee. Who knows if he even likes coffee?”
“I don’t know. But I know that if he accepts it, that says something.”
“It really doesn’t.”
“It does too.”
“It says he likes free things. That’s about it. Who doesn’t like free shit?”
“I know I do.” Chris’s voice came from behind us just then, carrying a bookbag and a paper bag in his hand. “They had more muffins than they knew what to do with so I grabbed some.”
“Such a gentleman.” Charlie leaped for the bag and tore it open. “Ugh, I love Coffee Bean’s muffins. We also have extra coffee if you want it. She picked it up before she got here.”
“Oh, thanks!” Chris grabbed the cup and took a sip, his lips curving to the shape of the cup. It was that moment I took the chance to really look at him from top to bottom. His hair was parted off to the side and he had opted for a white t-shirt with our university on the front. Jeans and vans completed the look and a worn leather bracelet adorned his wrist. It almost looked homemade.
“That’s a cool bracelet.” I said as cooly as I could manage, trying not to stare at it too hard. He touched it with\a gentleness that resembled fondness, like he was remembering something to do with it.
“Thanks, my sister gave it to me before I left for school. She’s back home in Austrailia.” It wasn’t news on campus that he wasn’t from America. His accent was a dead giveaway. “She likes to say that she hates me but when I remind her about this, she gets real quiet.”
“I didn’t know you had a sister, I have one too. She moved from my hometown to Arizona. Followed where her connections took her or whatever. But she’s happier there than she ever was back home. Even found herself a girlfriend.”
“Oh wow, she must really be thriving over there then. That’s great for her. I wish my sister would find someone just so she have something else to do other than torture me through the internet.”
“How does she do that?” I took another sip of my coffee.
“She’s really growing in fame on Tiktok. She actually put out an EP not too long ago. Called Perfect Blues. She let me listen to it before she put it out for notes and stuff and it’s actually pretty good!”
“I'll have to give it a listen then if it’s that good. She must have worked really hard on it.”
“Yeah, she’s been working non stop promoting and writing new stuff. She’s actually good. It’s hard for me to believe because I still see her as my little sister. I don’t think that’ll ever change.”
Charlie was being awfully quiet, scarfing down the muffins Chris had brought. When I spotted the wrappers placed beside her and counted them. “Charlie, did you eat all of the muffins? How many are in there?”
“Oh please, there are plenty left. You two just seemed to be engrossed in conversation, I didn’t want to interrupt.” She eyed me like she had the day before when Chris gave me his number. I couldn't help my eyes rolling in response. This girl will be the death of me…
“So what are we doing today? I know I have a paper that’s due on Friday, but I can do it later-”
“See, Chris? Maybe it’s a good thing you came to us this early in the semester. This is the time we do all of those things we say we’re doing ‘later’.”
“Charlie is very intent on keeping her GPA above a 4.0. We’ve been doing this ever since freshman year, but we only found this spot last year during Spring semester. She’s been on my ass ever since, which is why I have the grades that I do. She keeps me on top of my shit and I make sure she comes up for air every once in a while.” Chris nodded along to my words, listening intently and watching. Charlie just nodded along.
“You’re welcome by the way.” She turned to Chris, coffee in hand. “I’m the reason she passed stats with flying colors last year.” I rolled my eyes for the second time in a two-minute period.
“That’s just what I like to tell her. Makes her feel more important.” I whispered over to him, which in turn made him laugh. I hadn’t heard it up close like I just had two seconds ago. When it was a genuine laugh, he almost squeaked on the intake like a door that needed to be oiled. It was an easy laugh to crave to hear. I knew it would haunt me like a ghost in the weeks to come, even then. Chris grabbed his laptop out of his backpack and started typing, pulling books from the backpack as well to occasionally look up an answer to something he was typing. I pulled out my headphones when the comfortable silence fell, leaving one ear open to the world outside of my own bubble.
“Whatcha listening to?” Chris poked my thigh from where he was laying on his stomach on our blanket.
“This and that.” I couldn’t help my smile when his attention was on me. It was like a shot of sunshine straight to your veins.
“Just this and that? Do you mind if I also listen to ‘just this and that’?” His question shouldn't have caught me by surprise, but I found myself handing him my other headphone despite myself. “I think someone’s music taste says a lot about that as a person. Well, movies and music.” He stuck it in his ear and returned to his laptop, typing away.
“I love the Princess Bride. It’s one of my favorites.”
“Mine too.” He turned his sparkling eyes back towards me and smiled. I felt the blush creep up to my cheeks and I had to look away or else risk him catching it.
I flashed a glance towards Charlie to see if she had caught the exchange. She had, because she was wiggling her eyebrows at me. ‘Oh my god’ she mouthed at me, glancing at Chris to see if he was watching. He was not. And when she turned back to me, she picked up her phone, indicating that the conversation would continue there.
From: Charlie
Dude WHAAATTTT??? I told you, he likes you!! That was not a coincidence.
To: Charlie
I still think you’re nuts
From: Charlie
Think me nuts all you want, but I’m about to prove it.
I looked up from my phone to catch her eye. ‘How’ I mouthed in my most disbelieving look. It didn't occur to her that Chris was just looking for his newest girl to conquer, and I didn’t want to spoil her fun, so I just sat back as she mouthed back to me ‘Watch’.
“Hey Chris?” He looked over his shoulder to her with his eyebrows raised. “I promised my friend over here that I would take her out for dinner tomorrow night, but I have to cancel. My boyfriend’s birthday is tomorrow and I totally forgot. He’s not around here so I have to call him and do this whole long distance date and everything. Anyway, I thought maybe you could cover for me with her?”
I could do nothing but stare at my own textbook. One half of me was embarrassed that she would be so obvious with her plans. And even without my real knowledge of it. She would pay for that tonight, without a doubt. The other half couldn’t watch the trainwreck about to crash when he said he had plans. That half would be crushed when he said no, he’d have to pass like he did when he was trying to be polite when a girl asked him out and he didn’t want to go. Either ‘sorry, I have to pass this time’ or ‘I just don’t have the time right now’. Either of those were the responses I was waiting for. Definitely not
“Sure! Is that okay with you?”
Unable to feign my deafness when he poked me again, I mumbled a quick ‘hm?’ so they could catch me up to speed.
“Charlie had to cancel on you, so I’m taking you out tomorrow night.” His excitement was an unexpected surprise. Charlie beamed triumphantly from behind him at me, relishing in her victory.
“Oh really?” I said a hair more fake than I meant to. When I tore my eyes away from Charlie to look at Chris, he had a confident but genuine smile to show me. And damn it, I couldn’t help but return it every time. “And where are we going?”
“I’ll text you the details tomorrow. Just be ready by 6, yeah?” He didn’t wait for an answer and returned to his laptop.
The excitement of going on a date with a cute boy, no matter who he was, still ran through me like it was any other date. Charlie would pay for it, no doubt. But the thrill was still there that maybe, just maybe, he might be what Charlie suspects. But only time would tell.
Chris was normal the rest of the time he laid with us on our blanket, making occasional jokes with Charlie about their shared class, the professor, and the stupid people in that class. This left me with the opportunity to look around and see if anyone noticed the Mr. Campu Man had picked a new spot to hang out. His usual crowd was seated near the picnic benches where they normally were. None of them seemed any kind of curious as to where their fearless leader was, and that seemed completely fine by them. It was when he left for his class load for the day that Charlie really got her proof.
“Alright guys, I gotta head to bio. But if the invitation is still open, I’d love to come tomorrow too.”
“Only if you bring more muffins or some other baked good with you. If not, don’t bother showing up, Bang.” To that he chuckled and when Charlie didn’t chuckle back, he glanced my way.
“Oh, she’s serious.”
“As a heart attack.” Chare chimed in without looking up from her laptop. Chris kept his face blank for a second longer, then nodded in resignation.
“Any specific requests?” He said this part to me, asking me directly. I thought for a second. If he was going to go through with it, then what was the harm?
“Bagels, if you please sir.” I said in my best mocking voice, leaving it up to him to decide if I was telling the truth or not. He laughed again and put on his now fully packed backpack.
“As you wish.” He replied and left without another word.
A hard slap hit my arm the second he was far away enough from us.
“Oh my god!” She hit me on the arm again and again until I had to grab her wrist to make her stop. “I knew it! I knew it, I knew it, I knew it!”
“Why are you freaking out more than I am?” I buried my nose in the closest textbook to me to hide my face in.
“Mainly because I was right. But also because of the simple fact that a cute boy likes you! And I called it. How am I more excited than you?”
“Mainly because he didn’t even ask me. You asked him for me. He’s just being nice, Charlie. No one can say no to you, don’t you know that?”
“Girl. If he didn’t want to go, he would’ve said no. He has no problem saying no and you know that. I really don’t think he would have said yes if he didn’t want to.” I just shrugged, telling myself that she was right, but at the same time not wanting to believe it myself. I couldn’t bring myself to fully insert myself in the daydream that Charlie was living in, fighting the urge to run away and hide for good.
“I just-” I sighed and laid back on the blanket, letting the sun warm the air around me and breezes come and go.  “I think I would be more excited if he had asked me himself.”
“He just needed to know that you would be into it. Give him a chance and see how he acts tomorrow night. If he’s a douche, then call me and I’ll get you out of it. But if he’s nice and into you, then that’s kinda your answer, isn’t it?”
“I guess.”
Wait and see. That was my plan. That was all I had.
After my classes of the day were over, I went back to my apartment with Rhiannon to unload in a hot shower. Rhiannon came in while I had my towel wrapped around me on the way back to my room.
“Hey! How was your day?” She asked from her place in the hallway amid the ruffle of bags she dropped by the door. She only brought one to the couch with her and rifled through it to find her laptop.
“Pretty interesting, actually.”
“Oh yeah?” She inquired, ready for more details as she peered from behind her computer.
“Yeah, I got asked out, well not really asked out-”
“BY WHO?!” She shrieked, throwing the laptop aside to jump out of her seat.
“Chris Bang?” She stops in place and turns to face me dead on. Her features were frozen in a mixture of shock and what looked like…sadness.
“Chris Bang?” She repeated.
“Yeah. He didn’t really ask me out of the blue, Charlie made up some lie about us having plans beforehand when we really didn’t and she asked him if he would take her place, which he did.”
Rhiannon was pensive as she watched me recount the details, not letting me forget a single one. She even asked me exactly what his words were when he agreed to it and what exactly happened afterwards; his mannerisms, the word choice, and the nature of his body language.
“It sounds like he was actually interested, if that helps you. From what you can recall, you don’t have to worry about that part. But you seem disinterested now. Why?”
“Because he didn’t actually ask me.”
“So?”
“He’s just filling in, he felt bad that I would be left hanging.”
“I don’t think he would’ve agreed if he didn’t actually want to go.”
“Rhi…”
She was eyeing me up and down, gauging my words against her own knowledge.
“Why can’t you believe he would like you? What’s so hard for you to believe?
“It’s not that, I just don’t want to be next in the queue. I don’t want to be just another girl he’s gone out with, no matter how cute he is or how smooth he can be. I wanted to be able to resist him because I know better than to believe-”
“Believe what? That a boy with eyes can have a crush on a pretty girl? That a cute boy would see the same thing your friends are seeing? What’s so unbelievable about that?”
I sighed. “All of it. Why him? Why me?”
“Why not him? Listen, if you’re really that worried about it, just take it slow. Don’t do anything you wouldn’t normally do on a date with a guy and just treat him like any other guy. That should ease your nerves, right?”
“No.”
“Maybe picking out your outfit ahead of time will help give you more confidence. Come!” She sprung off the couch and headed for my bedroom without turning to see if I was following. By the time I passed through my door, she was already piling clothed on my bed a foot high already.
“How do you have nothing in here! What do you normally wear on dates?”
I rolled my eyes.
God help me.
*
He picked a good spot, I had to admit. Not to him, not to inflate what I was sure was a big enough ego. But Marty’s was far enough away from campus that we would be uninterrupted by any of his friends but not so far that we felt secluded from society altogether. The restaurant had a good enough reputation among students to be a good place to bring a date if you want some special alone time together. The implication of him bringing me here was not lost in the bounds of my thinking mind.
The room was warm and inviting, a red kind of wallpaper surrounded us with candle lit sconces in the upper columns and casted the dining room in a warm glow. The wooden tables helped the cozy feeling as soon as you walked in, as most of the furniture in the large room matched the rest of the dining room. The walls were graced with vintage-looking florals paintings that looked like they could’ve been plucked straight from an art magazine.
“Did I mention that you look nice tonight?” Chris blushed as he asked, turning his gaze back downwards toward his menu. His repetition of the question caught me off guard, being the third time he had mentioned it.
“Yeah, you did. But thank you again.” I tried to flash him my best comforting grin, which he looked up just in time to catch.
“I’m sorry, I’m not normally this nervous.” He smiled again and let out a nervous chuckle, rubbing his hands on his pant legs.
“Why are you nervous? At least your friend didn’t have to ask someone out on a date for you.”
“How do you know she and I didn’t plan something elaborate while we were in class because I was too nervous to do it myself?” I laughed at the preposterous notion that Chris Bang could be too nervous to do anything ever. “What was that for?” His smile was back in place of his nervous chuckle.
“I’m sorry, you just don’t ever seem nervous to do anything. So the thought of that just isn’t possible.”
“Why ever not?” He was quizzical, raising his brow at me from across the table and ruffling his white button down. His black earrings initially had given me some pause but the longer I looked, I saw the Prada logo and how well they matched his tailored pants. They had a light gray pattern going around them and hit him just above the ankle. He oozed wealth when dressed like this, not that I had seen him this way until now. His hair was perfectly styled to a side part, a few strands falling into his face. His dress shoes almost seemed too fancy for the restaurant he brought me to with their gold chain going across the top.
His family must have had money.
“You just don’t seem like you get your feathers ruffled very easily. Very go-with-the-flow kind.”
“You’re not wrong. But when the first half of the plan that wasn’t up to me went perfectly and now it’s only up to me, I’m getting nervous. I haven’t been this nervous before.”
“But why? What’s so different about me?”
“Can I get you guys some wine to start with?” Just then a well-dressed waitress came up to us to hand us a laminated wine list with names I could barely pronounce written in a fancy cursive font. It distracts us enough that I forget what I was thinking before she arrived.
Chris perused the wine list and selected for us, subtly but not so subtly flashing his knowledge just a touch. He eased up a bit as the night went on, bringing up his childhood. Head bounced between Korea and Australia before coming to the states during high school so he and his siblings could have a ‘normal’ education. They lived a few states away so Chris could ward off any unwanted visits from his parents. It wasn't that he didn’t love them, but they could be a lot sometimes. He talked about his sister and how she had stayed in Australia to pursue a musical path. Chris supported her in any way he could, but that life just wasn’t for him. And his youngest brother was in school back in the home state, going through all of the fun life stages of being fifteen.
We had just gotten to what brought me to our university when the dessert had come out. The tension in my shoulders from the anxiousness of the situation had eased immensely and Chris hadn’t uttered a nervous chuckle since the appetizers.
“I picked it because it wasn’t too far from home. I had the same idea you did, except I live in-state. It’s just my mom and me. My dad decided not to be a dad anymore when I was twelve and I haven’t seen him since. From what my mom can tell me, it’s better this way. She doesn’t miss him and that tells me I shouldn’t either. I don’t remember much.”
“I’m sorry that’s the way it is, though. I don’t know what I would do without my dad.” He gave me a sad smile as he picked up his fork. I did the same and reached for the small tower of chocolate between us. It melted in my mouth just like I thought it would, but my thoughts were interrupted by the buzzing of my phone on the table. I picked it up just in time to see Charlie’s name appear on my screen.
“I’ll be really quick, I promise.” I said with a grimace, standing up from my seat.
“No problem! I promise I’ll leave some for you.” He smiled back, assuring me. I nodded and headed out the front door.
“What?” I bit at Charlie.
“Soooo? How’s it going?” Her voice was airy as it questioned me.
“It’s still going and you’re interrupting!” I didn’t want to be rude but in spite of myself and how I got here, I was having a really nice time and I wanted to get back to it before the clock struck twelve and Chris Bang turned back into the popular guy who would forget who I was.
“Okay, sorry! I will await the debrief when you get back! Come straight here!” I hung up on her and reentered the building. Chris was talking to the waitress with an easy smile on his face and my heart sunk. This wasn’t supposed to be a date anyways. Not really. Charlie had done this because she was nice. I had tried not to get my hopes up but the more we talked, the easier it was to believe he might actually like me. So much for that.
He spotted me by the door and waved, motioning to the plate he had left for me to finish if I wanted. I gave him a half smile and headed back over, doing my best to ignore the sinking feeling in my chest.
“Everything okay?” He asked gently. He was putting something into his back pocket while he watched my movements for an answer.
“Yeah, she’s just nosy.”
“Ah. Well, thank her for me when you see her later tonight.”
“For what?”
“Oh, I was being serious. I asked for her help to ask you out because I was too nervous to do it myself.” I just stared at him in disbelief. He waited, with held breath it seemed, for my reaction. And when I didn’t give him one, he continued. “I had seen you around campus with her before and when she showed up in my class, I had to take my opportunity. I’m really hoping that helps me come off as cool or something and not a loser.”
“I don’t think you’re a loser.” I replied quietly. I gave him a reassuring smile and he mirrored it.
“Do you want to head out of here? Go for a walk or something?”
“Sure. Don’t we need to grab the checks first though?”
“Uh, no. It’s all taken care of.” He patted his back pocket when he stood up, which I could now see held a wallet-shaped object.
“Oh, you didn’t have to do that.”
“Yes I did. It’s only right.” He held out his hand for me to take. “Shall we go?”
Oh boy...

people being mad at aemond for calling alicent a fool or at aegon for yelling at her confuse me
just as a reminder: alicent raised her children in fear of rhaenyra, she told them that rhaenyra would kill them at the drop of a hat just to sit on a chair, all this whilst rhaenyra still lived in their home and viserys was getting sicker and sicker.
alicent made her kids live in constant fear for their lives knowing that there was a chance their dad would die in the middle of the night and they would be woken up by someone coming to get them cus rhaenyra took the throne and now they had to die.
this fear is what lead aegon to take a throne he did not want which then started a war, said war lead aemond to stormsend where he killed luke, which then lead to jaehaerys’ death.
there is a leaked video from the set of s2 where during jaehaerys’ funeral someone is telling the crowd that this is the work of rhaenyra the cruel. so they’re either fully going to pin b&c on rhaenyra instead of daemon, or they might just assume it was her.
so im sorry but if after all that alicent is still pleading for aegon to have mercy on rhaenyra, and apparently giving aemond reason to believe she still holds any love for her (the person who called for him to be “sharply questioned” whilst he was missing half his face, and who he was raised to believe would kill him to sit on a bunch of melted swords), then yes, im sorry but he has valid reason to call her a fool.
like just think about the emotional whiplash they’re experiencing.
they went along with the whole usurpation thing bc she made them fear for their lives, only to then have to hear her beg for mercy for the person she raised them to be terrified of.
ryan condal wants rhaenicent to be canon so bad that he is willing to make both alicent and rhaenyra plain stupid.
alicent begging for rhaenyra’s life during the green council even after two whole decades of treating her like shit and genuinely believing her capable of murdering her kids, which according to sara hess was all forgotten about thanks to one decent moment over dinner (ridiculous).
and rhaenyra crying on that fucking bridge bc of a page from 20 years ago (which was a clear manipulation tactic on alicent/otto’s part and you can argue with the fucking wall about that), clinging to a friendship that died 20 YEARS AGO and ignoring everything that alicent did to her and her kids in the meantime all bc of a page?
idc wether you like rhaenicent or not, i personally did not have an issue with it AT THE START, bc i thought it could make their dynamic interesting and it did for a while.
but if they keep sticking to trying desperately to ride this dead horse and refusing to give either of them some growth i’m going to lose faith in this show.
the writers are so stuck on this narrative that bc alicent did not have any control over her own life, that automatically means that she can not even try to learn how to properly wield the power she has, we saw her do it like twice to spite rhaenyra and that’s it.
this is a woman who has every reason to be angry and to want to use this power she has, if she really did believe rhaenyra would kill her kids that would’ve been an opportunity for the show to give us some growth within her character with her truly understanding the power she holds and wielding it to protect her kids, which in my opinion is just about the most noble of causes.
but no.
no growth for alicent, she was a victim with no autonomy at the start and this is the cage they will force her in until the end.
i hope i’m wrong but who knows.
btw im sorry but i’ve seen some posts saying that if either alicent or rhaenyra abandon their family for the other then it will be fine bc “they’re finally doing something for themselves and not the men in their lives”… girl…
they both have reason to believe that the other’s actions caused the death of their kids (or grandkid in alicent’s case), i do not care that they were pals. there is no version of this universe where it would make any actual sense for either of them to just “forget” everything that has happened just to have a fairytale ending to a friendship that has been dead for decades.
but whatever ig
i miss you book alicent and i hope you know that

Bit of a change if pace since here comes a cow 🐄🐮
I've been into feedism for as long as I've had a sex drive so this kink is an absolutely massive turn on for me, arguably never had a fulfilling sexual interaction or m@sturbation without something at least tangentially related to fat.
Becoming a massive mattress of pudge and lard always sounded hot in theory but the reality of it seemed so scary. But nie I've been fantasizing more and more about my legs being too fat to lift, my boobs being so swollen and engorged they make breathing a workout, a double sweat wide dimpled butt that makes doors a hazard to get stuck on
I have no idea why now, but being fed to death started sounding, loving and comforting like any other bdsm activity.
Is there anything that makes death feedism specifically your thing or could you elaborate on what exactly you find hot? 😈🥰
Also P.S.
I'd really like to dm you and talk to you cause you legitimately seem like a good, loving and caring partner and person and not some run of the mill weirdo that I found on dating apps 💜💜💘
Omg thank you for the ask, it's nice to have a cow instead of a piggy 🐮
I understand what you mean, I also have a good sex drive which can really be put to good use when I got some fat to play with or at least some fat/feedism talk to put me in the mood 🔥❤️
I love the way you describe how fat you want to become, especially the words "massive mattress of pudge and lard" is such a turn on and I understand it would be scary in reality to become this obese, but with someone by your side who knows what they're doing and truly takes care of you, it can be a lot easier and enjoyable for you 😊
I understand how you feel, feeding someone to death can be scary, but also really intimate
To answer your question, what got me into death feedism are multiple aspects, for example, I've always been someone who loves to care for the people important in my life, caring for someone who has no limits and wants to grow as fat and obese as possible with no end in sight, no matter how massively obese they get fits right in with my personality, I want to make sure that my partner will always be loved and cared for no matter what, whether it's at 600lbs or completely immobile, I want their life to be as enjoyable for them as possible and to be happy until the end 🩷
Everything about death feedism turns me on, whether we're talking about the health issues (struggle to breath and waddle, equipment used to help make your life easier like oxygen cannulas and mobility scooters), the share size your body could become with all this fat and lard enveloping you and the gigantic portions I would have to feed you just to keep you satisfied are one of multiple turn ons when it comes to death feedism 😈💕
I would also love to dm you, your ask was such a delight and from what I've just read, you seem like a genuinely wonderful person and loving partner as well ❤️
And believe me, you're not the only one who's had bad experiences on dating apps, I got loads of stories to tell on the subject lol but please, feel free to dm me, I would love to get and know you 🥰

Have I ever talked about how much I love Charlie? I really love Charlie. I know she's not the most interesting character on the show but she makes me so happy. Her singing voice is beautiful and Erika Henningsen does a great job voice acting her. She is expressive and bubbly, kind and determined, selfless and loyal to her loved ones. Even when she screws up, it's from a place of ignorance and she's genuinely remorseful.
Her belief others can be redeemed is so genuine, she's not doing only so other demons will like her. My theory is her good heart comes from Lucifer (maybe Lilith too, I have another theory about her) telling her stories about the Garden of Eden and the bible, but only the positive parts. She did all of her redemption plans while not believing either of her parents supported her, or even cared about her that much. She did it when everyone in Hell and even Heaven to an extent laughed at her face. "I need to save my people more than anything" and all that.
She's a great example of "do no harm, take no shit". She doesn't go out looking for a fight and genuinely tries to see the good in everyone, but she will get aggressive if someone pushes her too far. The only reason she didn't grind Valentino into a pulp was because of Angel Dust.

Oh god I know arguing with that person is pointless but Stede? Violating Ed's boundaries?? Literally what show were they watching because it can't have been the one where we watched Stede explicitly check for consent at every turn for two seasons and letting Ed define how much/what physical contact he was comfortable with. AND we're shown that this is a level of care Ed is not used to receiving from the people around him! Like, like the ship or not (although if you don't I don't get why you're watching a wholeass romcom about it) that's just rewriting the show.
I’m truly running out of gast to be flabbered.
It’s this lovely, genuine romance between two men who understand each other in an intimate and profound way, and adore all the parts of each other that even the other person fears or finds unpalatable. Why try to rewrite that into some…tragedy? Like, in all honesty, there is no reason to engage with this show at all if someone truly believes that the ending is unhappy and Stede is a rapist and Ed is an abusive villain. But it also kinda makes me very sad that anyone would look at something so lovely and twist it that much.
