I will forever love seeing Luffy and Nami holding Zoro's swords. He's so protective of those three but it's not even because he fears something might happen to them, but because he's scared something might happen to the crew and himself if he doesn't have them with him. They're like extra limbs. The ones he uses to fight and protect and breathe. He feels uneasy whenever his swords aren't around him, and that is just a fact. You can't deny that he feels comfort in having them by his side at all times, knowing that he'll be able to protect the crew from any dangers. They're tied to his heart and soul in a way that if he loses sight of them he might actually lose himself too. So he does not enjoy seeing his swords in somebody else's hands. They can disappear, he will find them. They can run away, he will follow. They can break, he trusts them not to but if they do, he will keep going carrying their bond with him still. But he doesn't like seeing them in somebody else's hands because those are his swords. His limbs. His heart. His soul. It's just not right. It never feels right. But.
But.
But sometimes Luffy acts like he knows what he's doing and actually asks for permission instead of just taking what he wants. As if crossing Zoro's boundaries would be unforgivable, when he knows Zoro would give him anything he wanted to take from him. But he asks. He asks, with a careful, polite, deep voice Zoro isn't used to hearing. But it always ends with the softest of smiles and the petition reaches a place inside of Zoro's heart that he just knows has also touched his swords. So he lets him, because how could he not, and he runs his fingers through all of them. Amazed. Astonished. Respectfully talking to them as if they could hear him. And they can. Zoro knows they hear and feel and love and crave and long for his captain's touch. He knows, because he does too. Because who wouldn't? Luffy holds them in a way he never holds anything else- Carefully. Like they aren't his. Like befriending somebody he fears might reject him. Like taking hold of Zoro's heart and holding him so gently in case he might break him. He worships them as if he weren't the god in this relationship. He looks handsome, too. Not pretty. Not cute. Handsome. Mature. His hat covers his adventurous gaze but leaves his mischievous grin for the whole world to see. And yet, the swordsman trusts him enough. Without any look or any word. He knows Luffy's face by heart, he realizes, now that he can picture his eyes quite too perfectly under his hat. His skin glistens under the sun and his tender fingers hold the sword with so much clumsiness it looks dumb. He doesn't know how to hold them, yet they don't want to move away from him. It's clumsy but it takes over them. Maybe it's his haki. Maybe it's the effect the future king of the pirates has. Zoro thinks it's just him. Luffy. And his heart stops the second Luffy smiles, as if he had just heard the sword respond to him. He wants to kiss him. Bite him. Let him bite back and draw blood and eat him. Let him hold him the way he holds the swords but tighter. Closer. Maybe he's in love. Zoro. With Luffy. It's not a maybe. Who is he trying to trick? He knows he is in love. With the way he smiles and the way he holds and the way he wants but respects and loves. It's funny like that, the fact that Luffy keeps being so careful when Zoro would let him tear his heart apart and eat it if he so desired. It's funny that the swords love him with such gentleness when they often demand power. Perhaps kindness is the most powerful weapon of all or, at least, Luffy's most powerful skill. Zoro hates it when somebody else holds them because they don't own them. They don't own him. He doesn't even own his swords, anyway. Nobody can. They're his the same way he's theirs, just with a bit more dominance and respect. But Luffy isn't owning them. He's praying to them. Talking to them. Befriending them. Loving them. And they would bow to him if he so desired. Zoro knows they would, as fierce as they are and violent as they seem and as sharp as they cut. They'd bow to him because Zoro would too. The uneasiness does not exist when Luffy is the one to hold them because, if Zoro had to give out his soul for somebody to take care of, that would be Luffy. And if he has to be unprotected. Naked. Bare in front of a thousand soldiers. He will if it's Luffy the one fighting instead.
Sometimes Nami wants to hold them just to feel what it's like to be in Zoro's shoes. It's a stupid reason. He refuses to let her do it as an instinctive reaction at first. She doesn't seem as interested in following the protocol as Luffy is, but she knows where to stop and she knows what to say to get on Zoro's nerves, anyway. She's equally as fierce. Equally as sharp. He won't let her hold any cursed sword, but it's not like she wants to. She's smarter than that. Careful and respectful but not that interested in the swords and what they mean, more in how they feel. Zoro gets it. Kind of. Somehow. She says something about always letting them eat her precious tangerines, so he should humor her by letting her hold Wado at least. She isn't pushing him. He knows she wouldn't. She's just teasing because she knows. She always knows. She knows he will say yes. Because he always does what she says, although he keeps demanding a bit of respect to not be treated like a dog. But Nami never forces him to do anything. He could refuse. She would give up at some point. But there's just something about her- Stubbornness. Strength. Love. So much love and care and worry and anger. And Zoro likes her. She's selfish, too, like a pirate should be. Stronger than Zoro in the ways that matter. Smarter, too, even if he wouldn't admit it out loud. But she leads the way and he follows, not because that's a dog's job, but because he wants to. He trusts her. Something he never thought he would. But he does. She's smart. She leads the way. She knows where they're going. They somehow are the same and totally different at the same time. Zoro grounds Luffy when he gets lost. Nami leads them both so they won't. So there's something about her curiosity that makes him soften. He never knows exactly why he does what she says. Why he indulges her like that. But it's satisfying, for some reason he refuses to read within himself, the satisfactory and pleased grin on her face when he hands her Wado. She's careful with her. Awful at holding her. Bad posture. Great smile. Horrible movements. Beautiful eyes. It's okay, though, he thinks. Wado likes her because Zoro likes her. Nami loses interest within a minute, complaining about the weight and the sudden realization of "you always have this thing in your mouth" which makes her want to give her back. But she stares at her for a whole minute. It isn't her thing, but her eyes spark when the sword is returned to Zoro. Trust. A smile. Thankfulness. Her bangs are getting a bit longer and one strand of hair gets in the middle of her teasing smirk. She says she prefers her clima-tact, but swords are fine, "I guess". "She's pretty" she says. Zoro thinks she is pretty. Nami. In a way he can't quite describe because he has never really been good at that. But she is. Like a blade. Sharp. But in the right hands this time for her not to cut the ones she loves anymore. She hands him a tangerine next, every time he lets her hold his sword. An exchange. "I give you something that matters. You give me something that matters". Zoro wants to say it's not the same, but the tangerine is sweet. Juicy. His fingers then smell strongly of citrus. Almost as similar as steel. If he can feel Nami's heartbeat in every bite, he wonders if she has been able to hear his in the hilt of his sword. Calm. Peaceful. Safe.
Zoro doesn't like seeing his swords in somebody else's hands because those are his swords. His limbs. His heart. His soul. It's just not right. It never feels right. But.
But sometimes it does.

Tumblr media
You are of the quiet sort. Just a shadow dancing in the periphery of their vision, and when they first met you, you’d told them it was your superpower, a soft, still smile slipping across your lips. Luffy had bought into it immediately, and the invitation was out his mouth before anyone could stop him.
“Come with us!”
“Oh…” your lips pressed into a thin line of consideration.
Zoro’s fingers itched towards his swords because something about you makes the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. But something else — something uncomfortable and strange, something very much like curiosity — seizes his chest and twists his stomach. Strange, he thinks, too strange.
“C’mon! It’ll be fun!”
And then, you’d smiled wider, and nodded, and that had been that.
It’s been three months since then, and you are still of the quiet sort, though it had receded a bit with time. What with Sanji’s gentle flirting and Usopp’s not-so-gentle stories and Nami’s bright, dry-humored companionship, you’d begun to “open up a bit”, so Luffy observed.
Zoro, for his part, has kept his distance. Because sometimes he still catches you at the bow of the ship, staring out across the midnight waters, still as a stone-carved statue. Still as a wooden beam — stiller, even.
“What’s with that?” he asks one day, strolling up to Nami as she traces a fine line over a new map she’s working on.
“Hm?” is her very eloquent response.
Zoro ticks his tongue against his teeth and casts his eyes about the ship, finding them drawn to the shape of you, up at the bow again, reading in the shade of the tangerine trees. Nothing moves except for the wind as it whisps through your hair and the slow scanning of your eyes as it skates across the page.
“New girl,” Zoro says, crossing his arms as Nami finally looks up at him and then off towards you.
“Why don’t you ask her yourself?”
Zoro lets out a puff of breath, unfolding his arms to glare at Nami. He finds her grinning a lopsided grin as she clicks shut her compass and puts down her pen. She leans a hip on the barrel she’d been drawing on and folds her own arms.
“Oh, you like her.”
“I’m weirded out by her. ‘S not the same thing,” Zoro snaps, but when he tries to leave, Nami blocks him with an arm and pins him with a sharp, leveling look.
“No, no, no — we’re gonna work this through.”
“No thanks, I’m good.”
“Uh-uh, you still owe me after that round of drinks the other night — remember when you bet you could drink more than me?”
Zoro narrows his eyes, “I did drink more than you.”
Nami’s grin is gleeful, “No, you didn’t. You had to be dragged back to your room after clogging up the toilet. Or do I need to show you the evidence —”
“Alright — fuck, fine. But really? This is what you’re gonna waste your favor on? You could’ve asked me to —” Zoro gestures around vaguely, “clean the bilge or something.”
Nami shrugs, looking almost too pleased, “Nope! This is what I wanna use my favor for. And, really, you think a bit of bilge water is gonna gross me out? C’mon.”
Zoro heaves a sigh and leans back against the main mast, closing his eyes.
“Fine then. Go.”
Nami sits back on the edge of the barrel.
“No, you go. Admit that you like the new girl.”
“I don’t.” He doesn’t open his eyes.
“I’ve seen you staring at her. We’ve all seen you staring at her.”
“What, that a crime now?”
Nami fights the urge to roll her eyes, “No, but I’ve never seen you try so hard to avoid someone before.”
Zoro lets out a bark of laughter, hard and mirthless, “Yeah, so that must mean I like her.”
Nami cocks her head, “It means you feel something towards her. And I’d suggest you figure it out.”
“And how’d you propose I do that?”
Nami once again waves in your direction, “Go. Talk. To her.”
Zoro lets out another breath, eyes scanning across the ship, anywhere but towards where you’re still sitting and reading, finger flipping a page in a perfect, smooth, singular motion.
And Zoro’s not blind. Blunt though he may be at times and careless as he is about most material things, he can still appreciate beauty when he sees it. And you — there’s no denying that you’re beautiful. Your strange stillness aside, when you do move, it’s with a dancer’s lissome grace, fluid lines, not a single movement wasted. When you smile, it seems to light you up from the inside, and your words, though soft, carries the well-worn weight of river stones, glittering beneath the clear, spring stream of your voice.
There’s a sharpness in your eyes, a straightness to your spine, a way of carrying yourself as if you’re afraid that one wrong move might shatter you and the entire world around you.
Sometimes when he sees you, he wonders at the hands that had sculpted you this way. He wonders at your life before they’d picked you up in Loguetown, when you’d oh-so-silently slipped up the execution platform and helped Luffy down, all the while staying free of Smoker’s watchful gaze.
The few times he’s seen you fight, he can’t help wondering if you’ve eaten some kind of devil fruit as well. No human could be so fast as that. Or be so quiet. But then again, he’d fought Kuro, and they’d seen stranger things. Still, he marvels at the way you flicker in and out of sight, slipping around the edges of battle like a dark, haunting thing, and men would drop like flies beneath your quick, quiet hands. With nary a sound or shout before their eyes roll back and their breathing is no more.
On the instances when Sanji had asked about your past, your eyes had gone misty and dark, unfocused. You’d gone still, freezing for so long that Usopp would cough just to fill the silence. And then slowly, ever so slowly, you’d turn back towards them with a small, sad smile and say:
“There’s… not much to talk about. I grew up somewhere far away, where if you didn’t keep quiet and still, bad things would happen to you. And then when those bad things happened, if you weren’t quick — the quickest of all, you’d die.”
Bad things, huh? Zoro thinks as he makes his way towards you, a hand resting on the hilt of his swords. He comes to a stop next to you and leans against one of the white planters, casually peering over your shoulder at the book in your hands.
For a long moment, neither of you move. Then, Zoro clears his throat and forces himself to speak.
“Is it good?”
It takes you a second, but eventually, you turn towards him.
“The book? Yeah, I suppose.”
“Not exactly a glowing review.”
You laugh, a soft, breathy little thing as you look back down at the page.
“It's about a girl who falls into an enchanted sleep, and a prince who wakes her up with a kiss.”
“Must’ve been one hell of a kiss.”
“Yes, and one hell of a prince.”
Zoro finds himself chuckling, his shoulders loosening as he takes another breath.
“And then what?” he asks.
“And then… he asks her to marry him.”
You run your fingers along the page, smoothing your palm over the ink and parchment. Zoro watches you, wondering, always wondering.
“What’s she say?” and it’s then that he notices his own voice, hushed and low, barely a whisper.
You look back up at him and smile a smile a sphynx would have been proud of.
“I don’t know. I haven’t gotten there yet.”
Zoro takes a breath, and the breath tastes distinctly different than all the breaths he’d taken before it. As if the world takes the breath with him, and some fundamental truth had shifted on the exhale.
The moment breaks, as moments are wont to do, when Sanji calls out for lunch and Zoro jerks out of his almost-reverie. You slowly close your book and rise to your feet, turning back to smile at him.
“C’mon, it’s lunchtime.”
Zoro nods and follows you into the kitchen, where Luffy and Usopp are already digging in, and Nami is pouring herself a drink. She spots the pair of you and catches Zoro’s eyes. A grin ticks at the edge of her lips but before she can say anything, you’re accosted by Sanji sweeping into a deep, flourishing bow, and ushering you towards the table, where he’d set your place in a manner fit for a princess.
“Where’s my setup?” Zoro asks as he drops into the seat next to you, cocking an eyebrow. Sanji shoots him an unimpressed look.
“I’m surprised you can use a fork and knife, moss-head. Just be grateful and eat up.”
Zoro scoffs but digs in nonetheless.
When next they dock, it’s on a rare, peaceful island — an island of light and books and learning, where the air smells of salt and ink and drying parchment, of unwritten words and untold stories. But it smells of a stillness too, and Zoro knows without having to ask that you’d like it here.
And you do.
He’s never seen you smile so much, never seen you so vibrant and full of life. You chat and laugh and read with a voracious hunger, and he finds himself drawn to this new, warm, moving side of you. He finds himself, more often than not, by your side, even when neither of you speak. And he basks in the comfort of the quiet that permeates the air when it’s just the two of you — him hanging in the hammock on deck, you reading by his side.
But now, there’s the soft tapping of your foot, the shuffle of pages when you flip forward to see what’s coming next, and of course the ever-present shush of the ocean as it washes against the Merry’s side.
The Log Pose needs two weeks to properly calibrate to the next island, so they’ve got time to kill.
On the fifth night, over dinner and drinks, Luffy asks the question that everyone’s been thinking since the day they’d all met you —
“So. Why’re you so still all the time? Not that it’s weird or anything — well, actually — it kind of is, but it doesn’t bother me. I’m just asking cause I'm curious!”
You look up from your half-finished wine but Zoro feels it happening, like the hush of a fan blade slicing through air, the gasp before a porcelain vase tips over and shatters. You stop. You stare. You’re frozen in every sense of the word. And he’s known you for long enough to know that you only go still as a reflex, only reach for it as a shield. Against what? He doesn’t quite know.
“It’s… something of a long story,” you say, your voice low and hoarse.
Luffy grins, smacking his lips as he sucks the meat off a chicken leg, “We’ve got tons of time! Right?” he looks around as if for validation, but everyone’s eyes are caught on you and your unnatural stillness.
Zoro shifts slightly in the seat next to you, opening his stance and turning towards you.
“Could do with a good story.”
Your eyes flash in his direction and he offers you the barest hint of a smile.
You relax, ever so slightly, drifting back in your seat, your glass cupped in the palms of your hands. And then, you begin to speak, your voice smooth and lilting, your words washing over them like the faint lull of the tides.
“When I was three, my father sold me for a barrel of beer.”
A dull clack echoes around the room and everyone turns to see Sanji hurriedly righting the thick stein he’s knocked over. Thankfully, it’d been empty.
“Sorry — I just — what?” he sounds furious but Usopp lays a hand across his arm and shakes his head.
You take a deep breath and continue, your voice oddly emotionless as you say, “The man who bought me took me to an island. It was… a dark place. A quiet place. I only learned its name after I escaped — an island called Elysium.”
Nami gasps before clapping her hands over her mouth.
“I’ve just — I’ve heard of that place before, but I thought… I thought it was just a made-up place.”
Luffy swallows hard, frowning, “What’s it like?”
Nami’s eyes flicker between you and Luffy, “Supposedly… it’s the home island for… for the most feared group of assassins in all the seas combined.”
Usopp’s eyebrows jerk up, “The most feared?”
A faint smile seeps across your lips like blood.
“Yes. The Shadows that Live.”
Everyone turns to look at you. Luffy picks up another drumstick.
“Whoa… cool name!”
Zoro hums, “I’ve heard of them before — but mostly, it was just an old wive’s tale about… shadow assassins who hunt in the dark. Mercenaries for hire. But… no one’s ever seen one before.”
“Because… once you see one, you’ll never live to tell the tale,” you say, your eyes now downcast and fixed on the glass in your hands.
“Then…” Usopp’s voice is soft, “What about… you?”
“I… I ran away.”
Silence greets you. But after a moment, Luffy spits out a bit of bone and uses it to pick at the space between his teeth, his eyes round.
“Wow! You must be pretty good to run away from an island full of shadow assassins!”
You almost laugh, his boundless trust hitting you like a punch to the stomach.
“So…” Sanji lets out a puff of silvery smoke, “the staying still thing… that’s just part of your training, yeah?”
You nod, “Something like that.”
Someday, you think, you’ll tell them about the hellscape that was Elysium island, of the long echoing halls, dark and still and silent. Of the mechanical beasts that hunted by sound and movement alone. Someday, you’ll let them know about the poisoned pomegranate seeds that they feed all the “recruits” to keep them hazy, of how you’d kept six of them suspended in your mouth and spat them all out when you’d finally made it far enough from the island to allow yourself to breathe.
“And… are these shadow assassins gonna come after us?” Nami asks, her voice careful and light.
You purse your lips, “I… I don’t know.”
Nami sighs, but a moment later, she moves to refill her drink with a slight shrug, “Well, just one more enemy to add to our growing list. Soon, we’re gonna have to post a sign-up sheet.”
At this, everyone laughs, and the tension snaps like a wounded spring.
Luffy burps loudly, patting his stomach, “I’m not worried — I mean, if you were able to run away from them once, that means you’re stronger than them, right?”
You pause, your hand hovering over the wine bottle. Zoro gently reaches over and refills your glass for you. You shift back into movement, casting him a small smile and taking a sip. The wine is cool and tangy as it hits the back of your throat. You breathe, and the world keeps spinning.
“I… I’m not sure — I’ve never fought… any of… them… before.”
“Guess we’ll find out if they try to come for you then — but you’ve got us now!” Luffy says, reaching for an apple and chomping into it, “ — Sho… you duon gotta wourry —” he licks his lips as he takes another huge bite before tossing the core towards the waste bin, “We’ve got your back!”
Nami makes a disgusted face, “Don’t talk with your mouth full, ugh.”
Sanji chuckles, tapping out his cigarette, “Yeah Luffy, mind your manners.” But his voice is full of laughter and you find yourself relaxing into the sway of the night, the swing of conversation. Beside you, Zoro refills his own glass and leans over to clink it against yours.
You turn, but he only raises his glass before taking a sip.
You mirror his movement, cradling the cup to your chest when you finish.
Later, he finds you by the tangerine trees, ghosting your fingers over their lush green leaves, dark enough to look black in the evening light.
“Hey.”
You turn, “Hi.”
Zoro sighs and looks out over the darkened waves, the moonlight refracted into a million shattered bits of sky.
“Luffy’s right, y’know.”
“What about?” you ask, joining him by the railings. The night air is cool and crisp. Behind you both, the island oozes with lamplight and laughter. Even from here, you can hear the joy, the peace that permeates the air here. It wouldn’t be a bad thing, you think, to stay here forever.
“If they come for you,” Zoro says, “we’ll have your back.”
You let out a small chuckle, looking down at your hands, “I know.”
“So,” he turns towards you, his earrings glinting in beneath the scimitar moon, “you don’t have to be afraid anymore.”
You lick your lips, and instinctively, you reach for the stillness. All the days and weeks and months with the people around you have softened you, and for that, you know you should be thankful. Still, old habits die hard, and you have to clench your fists and dig your nails into your own palms to keep from freezing completely.
You take a shivering breath and force it out again.
“Fear’s a hard habit to break.”
At this, Zoro grunts, though it sounds something like consent. The moment stretches, long and soft and taffy-sweet.
He turns back towards the sea, “Yeah,” he says, and then —
“But we can take it slow.”
You swallow hard, passed the broken shards of forgotten words lodged in your throat (you find that they all somehow taste like thank you), and you nod. Warmth tickles your cheeks and you wonder why he’s said we instead of you — and later, lying in your bed at night, staring at the moon-slatted ceiling, you wonder if he was really talking about fear or if it was something else entirely.
You don’t get a lick of sleep that night.
The next few days pass in a light, repetitive blur. You and Zoro are sent on a few short shopping trips in the city, and you’re glad for something to do that involves movement. Shocking how quickly the body adapts once the weight it’d been holding on to is lifted.
You are still quiet, and he, the same; but the silence has shifted around you, and whereas before it’d been solid and steady, it’s now thrumming and charged with some unspoken energy.
Neither of you are blind to it; nor, it seems, is the rest of the crew.
Sanji’s taken to openly teasing Zoro about being with you all the time, complaining loudly that he can’t get a word in edgewise because Zoro refuses to leave you alone. Nami keeps on trying to drag you out for “girl's day” shopping trips, hinting at all the cute clothes you could get and how “green really suits your skin tone, y’know?”
Luffy and Usopp for their part, both just grin whenever they see you together — Luffy stoked at the fact that you seem more happy and talkative, Usopp gleeful at the way Zoro always seems so much softer when he’s next to you.
You’ve taken to watching him when he trains, sitting in the shade of the tangerine trees, a cold drink in your hand as Zoro runs through his katas. You content yourself with watching him flow through the movements, one and then another, and then another after that. He contents himself with your presence, knowing that you’re here, feeling your eyes as they skate down the length of his back or the width of his shoulders.
It’s a peaceful sort of companionship, even if it is living on borrowed time.
When you all wave the little island goodbye, it’s with heavy hearts and tearful smiles. It had treated you well, and you think you’d miss it. But adventure is as adventure does — it calls, beckoning to those with wandering hearts to listen.
The first week back at sea is a strange one, full of a ringing nostalgia. As if you’re simultaneously coming home and leaving one at the same time. Everyone is a bit quiet, except for Luffy, of course, who literally bounces off the freshly waxed planks, humming to himself as he sits on top of the great ram’s figurehead.
“Is he ever still?” you ask one day, sometime in the second week.
To which Zoro makes a sound between a scoff and a laugh, “You’ve been here a while. What’d you think?”
You sigh softly and tear your eyes away from the bright, shivering ball of energy that is your captain towards the far horizon. A sliver of uncertainty twines through you and your breath slows. Zoro glances at you, now long since attuned to your subtle shifts in movement and stillness. He narrows his eyes.
“What is it?”
You shake yourself back into the moment, forcing a smile.
“Nothing. I think…” your words fade as the feeling twists in you again, knife-sharp and stinging. You clear your throat and reach up to brush away a strand of hair. Skin grazes skin as Zoro’s hand meets yours in the same gesture and you both freeze — hands held up, his finger caught against the bend of your cheekbone, your fingers curling over his.
Time slows, slackens around the pair of you, and the moment stays, suspended in space — garnet dark and perfect.
Neither of you dare to breathe. It’s then that you realize how close Zoro is — close enough for you to see the entire ocean reflected in his eyes: big and dark and so endless it nearly unmoors you. Close enough for you to feel the warmth of his skin; his body, emanating heat. You’d often wondered, in the long hours of watching him train, at the glistening copper of his skin and the light-kissed quality, if the sun himself favored Zoro as well.
Like this, it’s easy to believe that beneath his skin, there pulsed something like sunlight.
“Look! It’s an island! It’s an island!”
And just like that, the moment shatters. Time slips back into motion and you pull away from each other, breathless, with warm cheeks and thundering hearts, feeling somehow lightning-touched and static-ridden.
You take half a step back, reaching up to press a hand to your mouth as if to stop something from tumbling through. But what? You can’t really say.
Zoro tips back as well, whipping around to help Usopp and Sanji with the sails as Luffy continues to holler, waving his hat. On the horizon, you see it looming — the silhouette of an island. You lower your palm from your lips to your heart and wonder what kind of island it will be.
Deserted — seems to be the answer when you all make landfall. The island is quiet, but the occasional chirp and cricket staves off your nerves as you all wander cautiously about the beach, squinting into the dense forest that seems to encompass the whole of the island.
“Looks like a good place to camp for the night!” Luffy says, grinning as he plops down on the sand.
Sanji nods, dusting off his hands, “We’ll need some wood for a fire, but I reckon I can whip up some grilled fish from the fresh catch.”
You wrap your arms around yourself and look around, glancing back at the darkening horizon.
“Something the matter?” Zoro’s voice is soft as he helps you carry some of the camping supplies from the ship.
“No… yes… I —” you look up at him, pursing your lips, “I don’t know. I’ve just… this island is…”
Zoro looks around, his dark eyes scanning the thick swath of forest just beyond the beach, “Too quiet?”
You let out a tiny laugh, “Yeah, something like that.”
He nods, “Don’t worry, I’m — we’re here.”
And he leaves it at that, hoisting a stack of wood over his shoulders and going to help Nami with the fire. You watch him with a smile, wondering what on earth you’d done to deserve this level of caring, this magnitude of kindness. Soon, dinner is had and drinks are shared and laughter is spilled like so many silver coins over the white sand beach. The lull of the evening takes over you all, and before long, Luffy and Usopp are slumped over each other, snoring loudly.
You stare into the depths of the fire and try to tamp down the growing dread festering inside your bones. All those years of holding still, of breathing and listening and feeling — you shake yourself — no, not all stillness is a bad thing. Not all silences are made the same.
“You’re doing it again,” Zoro’s voice almost makes you jump. Instead, you turn, finding him next to you as he nurses a half-drunk bottle of wine in his hands. He doesn’t look at you, but there’s a loose grin hinged across his lips.
“Sorry,” you say, ducking your head, feeling a now familiar heat creep into your cheeks that has nothing to do with the dwindling bonfire.
“Don’t be,” Zoro takes another drink, “But I told you… you don’t have to be afraid anymore.”
“I know… and I’ve said before —”
“Fear’s a hard habit to break,” Zoro echoes back at you, finally glancing over and catching your eye.
You breathe out, looking down at your own hands, “Yeah… but I’m trying.”
You both fall silent, and for a while, the only sounds are the crackle of the dying flames, the shush of the ocean waves, and the occasional snores from the rest of your crew. It’s late — later than you realized.
“Do you… want me to grab a book for you?”
You smile, “No, I don’t think it’s bright enough.”
“I could restoke the fire.”
“No, it’s — it’s okay.”
“Alright.”
A bird coos the distance.
“Why don’t you tell me a story?” you ask, turning to look at Zoro proper, shifting till your body is facing him.
In the faint light, you can see the edge of his adam’s apple bobbing as he swallows.
“You’re asking the wrong guy — you should wait till the Great Captain Usopp’s awake.”
“Yeah, but I want to hear one from you.”
Zoro sighs, his eyes fixed on the last of the flickering flames. He takes another swig of wine before he starts to speak, his voice low and a bit stilted, but he pushes on. He tells you about his childhood, the village he’d trained in, the doujou in the middle of the wood, his friend who he’d never beat — not even once.
He tells you about he early mornings and the late nights, and how the world had seemed large enough to conquer.
“… And then… there came a morning when she didn’t show up… and sensei came and told me that there’d been an accident.”
His voice almost breaks then, and your eyes catch on the shining white hilt of the Wadou Ichimonji — his thumb pressing against the guard, running along it’s hard metal edge.
“Oh… I’m sorry.”
Zoro shrugs, “Don’t be.”
You nod, “Still.”
Zoro slates you a lopsided smirk, “So. Now you know my tragic backstory too.”
You laugh, leaning back to cast your eyes up towards the sky, “And you know mine — it’s almost like we’re friends or something.”
Zoro lets out a long breath, “Yeah… or something.”
There’s a tightness to his voice that makes your skin tingle and it takes everything you have not to look over at him, to try and see if he’s looking at you, watching you the way you’d imagined him to be. You fancy you can feel his gaze on your face, but you close your eyes instead.
You let yourself fall into the warm haze of sleep, and for a while you drift there, your mind sifting through shards of memories and slivers of sound, casting them against the backs of your eyelids as you slowly slide into the darkness of dreams.
You wake up to a gasping stillness — the silence pressing in on your eardrums like thumbs, the darkness around you so complete it’s almost a solid thing. You freeze, your breath hissing to a halt inside you. Then distantly, ever so distantly, you hear the sounds of battle — metal clashing against metal, the hard thud of boots against flesh. You shake your head and reach up to clap your hands over your ears and only then do your senses return to you, snapping back as if you’d been abruptly shunted back into your earthly body.
“Gum Gum — Pistol!”
“Seize her!”
You whip into movement, fast as a flash, dashing away, hoping against hope that it would draw your attackers far enough from your crewmates.
“No one… ever… leaves us…”
The voice is serpentine and susurrus, sinking into your skin like sharpened teeth, but before it can reach you, it’s cut short by a bright flash of silver.
You gasp, whirling around, reaching for the nearest pulse, instinct taking over as you sink your fingers into muscle and flesh. The rush of blood thrumming beneath your fingertips comes too easy, even as a familiar scent accosts you. A moment later, your hands are being pinned above you, and thick, rough bark is digging into your wrists as Zoro stands before you, a sword in one hand, the other holding you still.
His eyes are a little wild and a lot worried. There’s a ring of red rawness around his neck, thin trickles of blood trailing along his jugular, disappearing into the wide scoop neck of his shirt.
“Hey, look at me.”
You nearly whimper, struggling against him, fear still coursing through you like a drug but Zoro is strong enough to keep you held. Behind him, you can see the rest of the crew fending off several shadowy figures, Usopp waving a torch, screaming at the top of his lungs, Luffy whooping as he whacks another figure with his fist.
“Z-Zoro?”
“Yeah, it’s me — eyes up here.”
You swallow in a breath, and then another, and you feel the bright thrum of urgency leave you as your body slowly falls slack. And then you’re slipping, and he’s looping an arm around you to keep you upright.
“Th-they’re here — they —”
“They’re gone — we got rid of them — hey.”
Zoro takes you by the shoulders and gives you a gentle shake. Finally, your eyes catch on his and your gaze holds. You see yourself reflected in them, stark and terrified, but alive — somehow alive.
“They’re gone,” he says, his voice soft and low by your ear, his arm still wrapped around your middle. Shivers wrack your body as you bury your face in his shoulder. He smells of steel and skin and the metallic tang of blood. It’s then that you remember — the wounds on the sides of his neck. The marks in the shape of your hands —
You jerk back and feel a sticky wetness against your cheek.
“Zoro, I hurt you!”
At this, he scoffs, pulling back far enough to flash you a look.
“This is nothing. C’mon.”
He offers you a hand, and after a second you take it, letting him pull you to your feet. Wordlessly, he presses his palm to the small of your back, his arm extended to keep you steady as you both make your way back towards camp.
“Phew! That was a workout!” Luffy is saying just as you both reach the outskirts of the now-darkened bonfire. Sanji is pulling out a cigarette, striking a match, and first lighting the end before tossing it into the remains of the firewood, fanning it up into a slow flame.
Nami and Usopp both look a bit shaken, but none worse for the wear.
They all pivot to look at you.
You go still against Zoro’s side, uncertainty flooding through you. Faintly, you feel Zoro’s fingers as they press into the bend of your waist, solid and steady.
Then, Usopp coughs, “C’mon y’all — the Shadows that Live? Psh! More like — the Shadows that Fled, am I right? Yeah? Didya see the way I sent ‘em runnin’ with my brand new fire-powered explosion rounds?”
Nami chuckles and Sanji follows suit, shaking his head and letting out a thin wisp of smoke. Luffy’s grins at you, pumping a fist in the air, clapping his right shoulder.
“See? Told you we’d have your back! We are your crew, after all!”
Weakness seeps into your limbs as you nod, hot pin-pricks of tears itching at your lower lashes. You lower your head and rub at your eyes before looking back up again with a smile. Sanji grimaces as he looks over Zoro.
“Got something on your neck, mate.”
Zoro glares but you glance over and feel your stomach twist with guilt.
“Sorry… I can clean that up for you. They’re not deep but they do need to be bandaged up.”
Zoro wipes down his sword before sheathing it and motioning towards the ship. Behind you, you can hear Nami yawning and saying something about catching up on some more sleep and Sanji reassuring her about having the last watch anyway.
The kitchen is still dark, but the dusty dawn sweeps against the far horizon and neither of you bother to turn the lights on. You carefully set the first aid kit on the kitchen counter and collect the supplies as Zoro leans back against the edge and folds his arms. You work in near silence, reaching up to first wipe the thin threads of drying blood before tending to the tiny, crescent-shaped puncture wounds.
You press an alcohol-soaked cotton ball against one of them and feel Zoro wince.
“Sorry.”
“I’m fine.”
You bite your lips, “If this had been a bit deeper or a few inches over —”
“But it wasn’t. So it’s fine.”
You don’t look up at him but you can feel his eyes on you. Your movements are fluid and sure; you’d clearly done this before.
“Hey, look at me.”
You freeze, eyes slowly gliding up the planes and divots of his neck, slipping up the line of his jaw, so sharp it might’ve been turned on a diamond cutter’s lathe. Your breath hitches as you finally meet his eyes, and there’s a dark, knowing glint behind them that makes your stomach flip.
“I’m fine.”
And for the second time in a handful of hours, you’re caught by the realization of your closeness — only a breath of space between you. There’s a crimp at the corner of his mouth that looks dangerously like a smile and then you’re tipping forward, a thumb reaching up to trace the line of his bottom lip once —
The movement acts like a trigger, and suddenly, he is leaning in and the breath of space disappears.
For all your life of stillness, you thought you’d learned to appreciate the depths and widths of movement. But nothing could’ve prepared you for this — for the push and pull of lips on lips, for the force and friction of skin against skin. For the gasp and hiss, for the breath and kiss.
For the feeling of his large palm as it settles along the swallow’s-nest bend of your neck, the way his thumb runs along your jaw like tracing the guard of his beloved sword, tilting your mouth towards him. For the way your heart might flutter like a tiny, caged bird, or the way you might feel his heart thumping like a fist from his chest to yours.
For the way his voice rolls over your name like a ship at sea; for the way it would shake your body from your bones and leave you more liquid than solid in his arms. For how you never used to think your story would be a love story, but then you realize that every story is a love story if caught in the right moment, in the right light.
And here, breaking apart from Zoro, with a thick, stolen streak of lemon-yellow sunlight leaking in from the kitchen window — that’s exactly what it feels like.
“Oh,” is all you have the strength to say.
Zoro, in all his solid brilliance and quiet audacity, laughs.
You taste the smile on your own lips before you realize you’re smiling. But when you try to bury your face in his neck, he winces slightly as you brush his still-fresh wounds.
“Crap, I forgot about these.”
Zoro chuckles as you hurry to press a few small bandages to the wounds.
“It’s okay. So did I.”
You finish dressing his wounds in silence, though this silence is markedly different from every other silence that had ever existed between you. There’s ease and tension, both, and when you’re finally finished, Zoro takes both your hands in his.
“So…” you say, unsure suddenly of where to look.
Zoro’s laugh is just as soft, just as uncertain.
“So.”
You try to look out the window, but by now, the dawning sun is so bright that it temporarily blinds you and you jerk back. Zoro smiles, reaching up to run his thumbs along your closed eyelids before dropping them to hook around your wrists again.
“Do you… wanna talk about it?” he asks, quiet as always.
You purse your lips and let your lashes flutter open. You find him watching you. Heat crests up your shoulders and into your cheeks, and suddenly, the exhaustion of the night before saps at your limbs. You sigh.
“Right now? Not really.”
“Yeah, neither do I,” he says, sounding as relieved as you feel.
You bite your lips and cast your gaze shyly across his face, your bird-wing heartbeat still flapping in your chest. You fight the urge to go still, to reach for that shield that has always protected you before. Faintly, you feel Zoro’s thumbs tracing circles along the insides of your wrists.
“Can I ask for something else, though?”
“What is it?”
You reach up a finger, nudging one of his golden earrings. You don’t miss the way he shivers, or the way his breath quickens in his chest.
“Kiss me again.”
Zoro grins, tugging you towards him, leaning into the curve of your palm as he does.
And does.
And does again.

Hiya
Saw that you were looking for some request to help get you out of your block (I hate when that happens) so I was wondering if we could get a Zoro x F/GN reader with the prompt "Holding your hand under the guise of not getting lost in a crowd" The swordsman isn't as touchy as Luffy but I think he'd find a way to get that physical touch.
Thanks 🌴
Hey anon, thanks dear for the request 🫶🏻 I love this idea!! It has me all 🤭 giggling and kicking my feet. Also I hope you’re satisifed with this 🤍
Crappy Love Confessions
Pairing: Zoro x gn!reader
Tags: grumpy x sunshine, established relationship, Zoro thinks he’s being slick but you got him all figured out, slight insecurity/jealousy
Warnings: none, just fluff
Writing prompt: “Holding your hand under the guise of not getting lost in a crowd”
Summary: You arrive in a new town and you end up exploring it with your boyfriend by your side
A/N: I mostly wrote this in the middle of my lectures - I hope the person behind me had a blast reading this 😭 and ngl as much as I love grumpy men, they’re lowkey so hard to write (BUT I WELCOME THE CHALLENGE)
Word count: 1.5k
Tumblr media
Loud chatter, salesmen shouting and advertising their products filled the air, the smell of various restaurants, children running about - the tunes of a new city filled your senses and you stare around in awe; almost every time it‘s the same deal and every single time you‘re still amazed by this feeling.
Luffy‘s hand met your back and finally pushed you off the boat. “Come on, y/n.“, he was drooling and you looked at him in amusement, “I smell meat!“ - he was already gone - a chuckle escaped your lips at the antics of your captain.
“Cutie-chan“, Sanji gasped dramatically and he grabbed your hands to check if you‘re alright, “are you-„
Zoro‘s grumble interrupted him and the both of them are about to butt heads again; you‘re ready to intervene and prevent the town from getting destroyed by these two but Nami was faster.
“Don‘t you guys have things to do.“, she pointedly stared at Sanji, since he was the one that needed supplies and ingredients for the next few weeks.
Sanji is about to make a flirty remark but stops himself when he sees Nami‘s glare, she pushes him off the deck and Zoro towards your direction, then proceeds to hum around about ‚not having too much fun‘ and your cheeks flush slightly; nonetheless you grin at her and shout back “no promises.“
Zoro looks at you, or well, more like scowls at you and if you didn‘t know any better you‘d think he was mad at you.
Your head tilts slightly to the right - inaudibly asking what‘s wrong.
“It‘s nothing“, he tenses up, and you can see something is bothering him in his eyes - now you could go about this in two ways, either you pester him and force him to tell you or you respect his boundaries and let it be.
You figured he‘d eventually tell you himself once he‘s comfortable enough and let it go, instead you focus on the rumbling town in front of you and smile and start walking, you knew Zoro would follow you either way so you don‘t bother calling out to him.
The both of you check out the shops, while you grab some utilities you also check out the snack vendors, all while Zoro is right behind you following every footstep and holding your bags for you on one arm and the other empty for, probably any worst case scenario he can imagine.
When you see a sword shop out of the corner of your eyes, you smile and turn towards him: “Do you want to check it out?“
He glances at you, then at the shop, he seems to contemplate it, overthink it even; you let out a sigh and step towards the shop: “Come on“, you nudge him, “it‘s at least worth checking out.“ and nudge him into the shop.
You stand beside him, observing him fondly while he checks everything out in deep concentration and gets anything he needs; when you’re ready to check out and leave the store you notice a small dagger - perfect to replace the one that broke recently.
You test out its feeling around your grip and its secureness and smile to yourself in satisfaction - you’ll get this one.
What you fail to notice is your boyfriend staring at you in admiration - for someone so kind you were deadly when threatened - in fact it’s the reason he was so drawn to you in the first place. All you needed was two little daggers and no one stood a chance against you, your bubbly self would disappear and it would almost seem like you had been replaced with the best assassin to walk the earth.
When you glance back at him satisfied with your choice, your breath halts for a moment; the way Zoro was looking at you right now? It almost made your face flush in embarrassment, his eyes were filled with endearment, admiration and something else you can’t pinpoint right now - he always had a hard time vocalizing his feelings for you but he didn’t have to, you always knew how much he cared for you without saying anything.
You clear your throat in an attempt to dissipate the butterflies in your stomach and smile at him: “You got everything?”
He keeps staring at you mesmerized: “yeah, i got everything I need.”, your face flushes slightly and the butterflies you tried to dissipate earlier come back, he didn’t mean just his sword supplies - not with the way he was staring at you.
“Alright.”, you nod and make your way to the cash register and pay up.
Zoro is already outside, leaning against the wall, while waiting for you, when you get out he promptly gets up and walks beside you, he seems to contemplate something, you were about to ask if there’s anything else he wants to check out when grasps your hand. Your face flushes when his large calloused hand wraps around your smaller softer one and you grin brightly - the warmth inside you only growing bigger and bigger.
He looks away, his voice slightly hoarser than before: “I can’t risk getting lost.”, you raise an eyebrow in amusement, his blushing ears clearly betraying his actual thoughts.
“Sure.”, you smirk clearly unconvinced by his reasoning.
Now the both of you walk together, your hands intertwined and you hum happily looking for your next destination.
The both of you walk around more until it’s late in the evening; your feet hurt from walking around all day and you decide to finally go back to the ship.
“Zoro”, you pout, the sting getting worse and worse.
He sighs slightly then proceeds to let go of your hand before he kneels down in front of you: “Hop on.”
The warm feeling in your chest, once again, consumes you - god you love him - you get on his back and wrap your arms around him while he grabs the back of your thighs and picks you up.
Fondly you kiss his cheek: “Thanks, dear.”
He ‘hmphs’ slightly and grumbles: “you’re too light, do you even eat?”
“Y’know I always finish Sanji’s food”, you grin, “you just lift abnormal weights.”
He tenses up slightly when you mention Sanji: “Don’t mention his name.”
Your eyebrows furrowed in confusion, Sanji and him always fight but he usually didn’t react this badly at his name being mentioned; finally, it clicks in your head and you manage to connect the dots.
“Is this about this morning?”, you lean your head on his.
“I don’t like when he’s being close to you.”, he sighs.
You smile and hold him tighter: “I don’t care for him, in the same way I care for you. No amount of flirting from his side can change that.”
“It’s not that. I trust you, it’s just..”, he seems to gather his thoughts, trying to put them into words and you let him - he needs to realize just how important it is to let you in. His jaw tenses up and he clearly seems uncomfortable being vulnerable, even if it’s you he's talking to. “It just makes me think that I can never be as vocal as him; He doesn’t mind crappy love confessions or public affection.”
It takes you a few seconds to even process his words - was he insecure?
“Zoro”, you motion for him to let you go and you quickly step up before him, grasping his face, “I don’t want crappy love confessions or public affection or anything else, I want you.”
“Ok but what if me being me isn’t good enough at one point and you want to do better - you certainly can, if you want to.”, he looks at you, the uncertainty finally clear in his eyes and it pains you, leaves you wondering for how long he had been harboring such thoughts.
“No, fuck that, I don’t want better, because there is no better.”, you bite your lips slightly, “ for me? You’re the best pick, Zoro. I love you, the way you are and I want nothing more than for you to keep being yourself and it’s not going to change any time soon. You hear me?”, you hold his face once again and genuinely look at him, he needs to believe you, trust that you won’t leave him.
“I’m just being stupid, aren’t I?”, he smiles at you a little stunned.
You smile and shake your head: “No, not stupid. Human.”
He raises an eyebrow slightly at your choice of words but accepts it nonetheless. He kisses your forehead earnestly and once again kneels for you to get on his back.
You grin and hop on, hugging him tightly.
He clears his throat: “I love you, too, by the way.”, your grin brightens - and he says he isn’t the type for crappy love confessions.
Together you guys walk through the bustling town back to the ship, the warm sunset fitting the atmosphere inside your chest.

because i woke up today still thinking of zosan's baby girl, here are some stuff about it that are now my roman empire:
none. i repeat NONE OF THESE STRAW HATS know how to hold a baby. sanji figured it out due to dormant maternal instincts alone. and more than half the time he has to yell at everyone to not hold her up by the calf or the ankles ("i'm looking at you luffy please for the love of the all blue do NOT gum gum whip her around like a toy—")
unlike both her dads, ayari is actually being extremely picky with food in the beginning. she hates certain textures and cries like its the end of the world when her baby food isn't heated to the right temperature. funnily enough, one of the few times she ate something she didn't want is if chopper is next to her eating the same thing and telling her its yummy. dw none of the baby food goes to waste. they're all re-used somehow in the week's menu. or zoro just ends up eating it.
ussop made a lil wrap around cloth for ayari so that sanji could cook while carrying her hands free. or zoro could have her strapped onto his back and nap while he does pushups.
robin could be seen reading books to ayari when both zoro and sanji are out cold and exhausted from being first time parents. one or both of them would wake up to find robin telling little ayari histories of the islands they visit, or the countries they've saved. she tones down some of the darker elements until she's old enough to grasp it. ayari grows up with auntie robin's love of wanting to know the world.
nami started doing her makeup with ayari on her lap. she shows all the different little products to her, letting her touch her brushes and everything. nami even "does ayari's makeup" too aka she just tickles her face with the brushes and pretends to put makeup on her so she feels like she's doing it too. when she's a little older, ayari asks sanji to join them and more often than not, sanji is making lunch with a full face of makeup done by ayari.
ayari's teething toy is a little plastic mouth sword. zoro is infinitely happy about it.
in the beginning, sanji tried to take up most of the parental responsibilities up until the point that he got too sick to even stand. he was stressed and exhausted beyond belief, actually pushing zoro away a lot. but when he collapses one day sporting a fever that was highly too reminiscent of when nami was sick after little garden, it scares him enough to finally seek zoro out for help.
and its not like zoro has not Tried to take the load off. its just that sanji was still fighting all his repressed feelings for zoro and this undue pressure hes put on himself to become a better parent than judge ever was to him. that he could raise this child with love and attention and devotion, completely forgetting that hes not the only parent.
zoro and sanji have a heartfelt talk about how the wish that was granted on that island was a blessing beyond belief. that theres a reason ayari looks like both of them. that she takes after both of them.
they both wished for this child in the deepest depths of their hearts. they wanted not just to be together but to have someone that grows up loved by them. cared for by them. not a restart or a replacement for a lost loved one like they first thought it was. but a child who sees them — zoro and sanji — and will one day wish to have a love like theirs.
oh also "luffy" is ayari's first word because zoro and sanji say it so often to stop their captain from doing dangerous shit while he's holding her. in line with that, her second word is "stop" so the first sentence she ever says is "luffy stop!"
the crew are hysterical over it. sanji stares into the void bc he wished for ayari's first word to be "dada"
he settles with the little joy of her fourth word being "marimo"
because her third word was "curly" (something he nearly strangled zoro for)

One Piece Men As Fathers
Part two here
Monkey D. Luffy
Tumblr media
Luffy as a father….whooo boy
Is most likely more of a boy dad than a girl dad, but if he does have daughters, he wouldn’t mind at all.
He will fight your children for food. You can’t tell me he wouldn’t. They may be his kids, but it’s also his food.
He will also forget that he even has kids sometimes. It would go something like this: “Luffy, have you seen the baby?” “Eh? What baby?” “Our baby, Luffy! Your son/daughter!” “Oooooooh, that baby! Yeah I left them with Zoro.” “And where’s Zoro?” “Knowing him, he could be anywhere!”
You don’t leave him alone with the baby after that.
Ability to cheer baby up is a solid 8.5/10. With his Devil Fruit, he can stretch his face into the most absurd expressions and the baby will be laughing and happy in no time flat.
Roronoa Zoro
Tumblr media
Just from the way he is with Chopper, you can already tell he’d be a good dad.
He’s definitely very overprotective, no matter what gender your child is, he makes it his life mission to protect them.
Will take regular naps with the baby, and doesn’t mind being woken up by them if they get upset.
Gives them a baby sized sword when they’re old enough to hold it, much to the protests of the more logically minded Straw Hats (i.e. Nami, Jimbe, Robin, Sanji)
However, despite his strong qualities, he is not the worlds most perfect father.
For instance, your kid gets hurt? “Take a swig of this, you’ll forget all about it.” He says, holding out a bottle of sake.
You slap him for that.
Zoro’s ability to cheer baby up varies, I’d say. I’d go with maybe a 6/10
Vinsmoke Sanji
Tumblr media
He is a girl dad. But will not be opposed to boys.
He strives to be both the perfect husband, and father, so you better believe that his kids are getting all the love from their dad.
One of your kids is a picky eater? He will figure out just what they like and make it exactly how they want it. He’ll even let them come into the kitchen with him and show him exactly how they want it.
Will not hesitate to spoil your children rotten. You practically have to reign him in every time he sees something he thinks they would like. And then you have to listen to the “But Y/n-chan! Think of how happy they would be!”
Just say no. He will charm you into bankruptcy if you don’t.
Will plan elaborate tea parties with his child, and will also get you to participate.
Will definitely teach the baby to hate Zoro from an early age, so you know exactly who to blame when your child points at said male and babbles “Marimo!”
Sanji has a proud Papa moment, before you whack him on the head.
Ability to cheer baby up is a 7.5/10. With the way he cooks, no one can stay upset for too long.
God Ussop
Tumblr media
You’d better believe that your kids are getting the best story times ever with Usopp as their dad. He will spin the best stories, do all the voices, and even include his kids in the story.
At lease one of his kids gets his nose. The genetics are too strong.
He’s the best at doing his kids hair. No matter how long it may take, he will sit there and figure it out.
He has taught his children his “fight or flight” way of life, and they secretly judge him for it.
Like Zoro, gives them a baby sized slingshot, and everyone blames him once your child starts shooting at people.
His ability to cheer baby up is 4/10. In a stressful situation, Usopp has been known to blow things out of proportion, so that combined with an upset baby doesn’t really do anything good.

We know there's a lot of weird spots that the strawhats have traveled through and I was thinking about what things would be super creepy out on the open water.
And I thought the sea is always moving, right? There's almost always going to be the sound of waves and water, even if it's quiet. There's almost always going to be the sway that comes from being at sea, the smell of salt, the harsh line of the horizon, etc.
But what if there wasn't? What if the water goes silent and the ship goes still? What if the horizon disappears in a night that's too dark to be normal and the moon is the only light but it sits in the sky more like a gaping hole than the usual nighttime companion?
Dark
Quiet
Still
Something where Luffy and Zoro are out on the ship in the middle of the night, the moon too high and too bright but everything much darker than it should be. The water and sky around them is all a wrong sort of black.
Luffy sits ridged on the figurehead and the frown is clear from the lines of his body even though he's facing forward. Zoro standing on the deck right behind him, the muscles of his back drawn tight and he has his hands on his swords. They're both almost swallowed by the dark.
The moonlight cuts across the deck in a harsh, sterile light.
Sanji leans against the mast towards the back, the very edge of his shoes teasing the cut of the moonlight. The red glow of his cigarette lights up his face just enough to see the harsh slant of his brow and the tightness of his jaw. The smoke is white as it leaves him and then gets swallowed by the dark.
Robin off to the side, arms crossed and hip resting against the side of the deck. She looks like stone in the low light, shoulders back and a blank look on her face.
All of them hyper focused on where the horizon should be, but is instead it's just endless, wrong dark.
Everything still and silent. The water doesn't move and there's no breeze.
The world is holding it's breath.
Quiet.
The only sound is their heartbeat in their ears and shallow breathing that's almost soundless. Chopper clings tight to Nami who's pressed side to side with Usopp. Franky and Brook are both on the other side of the room, keeping watch and braving the edges of moonlight that come through the little window. They're motionless, Brook blends into the shadows and leaves only the occasional white bone for the moon to catch. Franky is especially menacing and huge in the near nonexistent light.
They don't go out, terrified of making a noise that would break whatever silence is currently blanketed over them, terrifed that they'd make Luffy and the others lose focus and take their eyes off whatever they're watching or waiting for.
They stay curled up and silent against the wall that separates them from the moon and the night. It's dark inside the cabin but it's softer than whatever is outside. It's almost comforting, like children hoping a blanket keeps away the monsters.
They stay like that all night. When the first splashes of color spill across the hoizon it seems like a blanket has been ripped off. Suddenly air comes easier into their lungs and their muscles relax enough to flex fingers that had been clenched for hours and roll shoulders that had gone tight.
Zoro is back to his normal napping spot of deck, chin already dropping down to his chest and swords laid across his lap.
Luffy is still on the figurehead but he looks like he's humming to himself and looking towards the horizon with ease.
Robin is sitting down on the stairs, tired but relaxed as she leans into the morning breeze.
Sanji is already making his way towards the kitchen with a lazy stroll, the smell of his cigarettes lingers over the ship.
They don't ask.
Chopper scampers over to Zoro and carefully nudges the swords aside enough that he can climb onto his lap. He finally relaxes as Zoro wraps an arm around him, he's in one of the safest places on the ship.
Nami lets Sanji flutter around her longer than normal, sitting beside Robin who also seems content to indulge their cook a little extra today.
Usopp tails Franky, being careful on where he looks even though he knows there's no risk of him seeing anything terrible anymore. Franky asks something and Usopp launches into a story, eyes brightening up and a smile back on his face.
Brook goes to sit near Luffy and starts to play something warm and welcoming to greet the day.
It never happens again, at least not like it had that night.
Sometimes Luffy or Zoro seem to stare off at the horizon with a sharp intensity, but it breaks quickly.
Sometimes Sanji stands on the deck and smokes until there's a pile of ash at his feet, brow furrowed as he looks out over the water until he seems to blink and break himself out of it.
Sometimes Robin sits on the deck and wears the face she make when she's working on a puzzle, going though everything she knows and trying to make everything fit together.
That endless dark and haunting moon never reappear though. The dark only brings stars and the moon glows like a warm candle.

Here me out on Zoro and Luffy rq.
Back on my bs and I had the most interesting daydream yesterday.
Tw: Unrequited love, Flight Angst, Suggestive themes(?), Poly (3) relationships. (OC maybe??) Based on the OPLA cast and the Anime.
Tumblr media
So boom say that you are a somewhat new strawhat member somehow recruited by Nami (🍊) You may have helped her steal something or maybe helped her in a fight and she think you're a perfect fit for the crew (👒).
You just so happen to be the most hyper ready for action person for her to meet other than Luffy, so you agreed (Who wouldn't) When you got too the Going Merry it was so nice you were practically jumping off the side rails in excitement while Nami went too get the members and explain and (hopefully) get you in.
You were honestly just excited to get away from land and do adventures but oh did that change when you saw a certain moss headed man with a scowl on his face quickly approaching you, you swear everything went in slow motion not hearing a word he said to you as you gawked at him. Then a pair of..arms?? stretched around the green haired man and pulled him back with a tug. Okay now somes fishy here and it's not the sea.
Turns out it was a man named Zoro the first mate and a very interesting captain named Luffy with the cutest curly hair.
It's been a few months since you been around and been across a few..bad people from running from a man with a hatred only for humans, and running from marines you can say things have been eventful.
You also have the biggest crush on your captain and Co-Captain but where's the harm in that? It all started with luffy when he saved you from falling from a high place with his devil fruit then smiled at you while holding you too his chest asking if you were okay in that cute accent.
Zoro didn't really trust you yet, but you were always around him, always asking questions about his swords while he gave short answers, you always sat close too him and luffy basically scooting between them with a smile as if nothing happened. He knew you had a crush and so did luffy but they said nothing.
Until one day you proclaimed that you would marry them both with a swift nod from a successful heist Zoro honestly froze up as Luffy laughed nodding along with your antics as usual.
You see, Luffy made it no better since he gave you all the hugs you wanted and even let you sit in his lap when you asked. It was too the point where zoro called a "Team meeting" with just you three, he only said that as the team there would be no crushes as he had no interest in anyone putting an ephanse on anyone. While Luffy just nodded and said "Plus i'm too focused on being the pirate king"
You understood you really did but that didn't make it hurt any less, then Luffy met Boa Hancock, it was all down here from there you could see how they talked and looked at each other too the point where you started loathing them both because it wasn't fair you thought. Of course Zoro caught on and an argument assumed too where you guys said really hurtful things and even said you'd leave too which he responded with "Good, leave." You three didn't talk for a while after that. You became really silent just around them didn't even look or speak too them small touches and hugs completely disappeared. The whole crew honestly felt weird without that.
Then as you said you would leave you did, you didn't even tell anyone just up and left, Nami yelled at zoro as he started most of the argument and that day was a silent day, no one knew where you went and zoro nearly drank all day, but luffy was so sure he would find you and bring you back.
But would he really?
Tumblr media
Notes: Sobbing real bad, dunno if there would be a part 2 considering this is just an idea I really like fics like this though.

“I didn’t realise I needed your permission to help you?” You wince in pain as Zoro tends to your wounds. “You do when it could risk you your life.” He puts down the rag that he had used to disinfect your gaping wound. He then picks up a roll of bandages and wraps it around your arm where the wound is.
The crew had ran into some trouble with another crew resulting in a fight. You had defeated the pirate that was after you but when looking around you saw Zoro struggling against a pirate holding a blade to his throat.
You ran over to him, ready to throw a punch before the pirate spun around and caught your arm with his blade. This left an opening for Zoro to grab his sword and strike the enemy pirate down.
He finishes wrapping your arm with the bandage and sets it down. “Look after yourself. I don’t like it when you get hurt.” He sighs and crosses his arms. “Because you don’t like looking after me. Well I didn’t ask you to. I’m sure Sanji would be much better at wrapping these bandages.” You scratch the bandage. “It’s way too tight.” You see him huff. “Fine risk your life. I don’t care.” He stands up with anger and storms away. You roll your eyes and scratch at the bandages again. ‘Better go talk to him’ you think to yourself.
You walk out onto the deck of The Going Merry, to see Zoro standing at the edge, staring out at the vast ocean. You slowly walk over to him, trying to be as quiet as possible. He must have heard you as he drops his head and turns around. You reach him. “Look Zoro I’m sorry. I only helped you because I didn’t want you to get hurt.” His eyes widen a little and he uncrosses his crossed arms. “Yeah. I know I just … don’t like seeing you hurt.” His eyes soften and his eyes drop down to your bandaged arm. “This is nothing. Just a cut.” You flex your arm showing him that you’re fine. “I know but it could’ve been worse.” Seeing his eyes soften and letting his emotions show a little more than normal. It made you feel a little sorry for him.
You walk next to him. “Why care so much? If it were Nami or Luffy you wouldn’t care, well not as much at least.” He licks his lips, as if he’s nervous about something. He turns to face you and move his hands so they graze yours. “I’m in love with you y/n. Seeing you hurt. Seeing you trying to help me. It made me realise that I see you more than just a crew mate.” He glides his thumb against your hand. In response you move your other hand over his cheek. Not touching but close enough to feel the heat radiating off of him. “I love you too Zoro.” You say quietly almost too quiet.
He moves your hand onto your cheek and you smile. “Do I need permission to kiss you?”
A/n: hope you enjoyed 💞

Nami knew she had gotten under Law’s skin, she didn’t even need to look back to know the look he had was priceless. Nami and Robin both knew the boys were crushing hard, even Luffy. She even considered you a girl crush. The lingering stares they all had when you walked by, no matter who it was they couldn’t keep their eyes off of you.
I guess it was because you were so very different in every way. You were an alien to them. A beautiful and charming being that was gifted to them from the man above. You wanting to leave them broke their hearts, you were like their last missing puzzle piece.
Nami sat back down with the minks enjoying the rest of the night while Law decided it was best to make his way to you, you’d been gone for fifteen minutes now.
Zoro had laughed so hard there were now tears in his eyes. You couldn’t help but bite your lip to keep yourself from smirking. Zoro was a sight for sore eyes even though he didn’t acknowledge it.
“ Y/N you always surprise me. That’s why I like you” he said wiping a stray tear from his eye.
“ Well it is the truth… any answer I give you won’t satisfy you or the crew”
“ And why is that?”
“ I don’t think I need anything else unfortunate to happen in my life”
Although his laughed died down he still held a smile to his face making you want to look away. Why is anything amusing in the first place? He’s acting as if he didn’t put you in a choke hold when you first got back to the ship.
“ Y/N… I know you’re angry and you’re trying to hide it. And I’m sorry for what I did to you”
“ Ok, I don’t forgive you”
“ That’s fine, I’ll give you time to forgive me and I’ll do anything for you to feel comfortable around me like you did before…”
He was much closer now, you could feel your heart racing as he towered over you so easily. You wanted to back away but you were stuck in place like the soles of your feet were nailed to the ground.
“ I had something else to say as well..”
“ Hurry up”
“ Trafalgar… you and him-”
“ There is no me and him. Law and I are friends why do all of you keep asking me stupid questions ! ”
He reached out and tilted your face towards him. As he got closer you had to look away— look anywhere else he was even more intimidating to be alone with. He was holding your chin and starring into you like he was searching your eyes for the truth.
“ I though Luffy told you.. you were a bad liar?”
“ I-”
Right then the door opened and you felt like you could breathe again. It was Law and he frowned as he seen the awkward scene in front of him. You walked towards him and grabbed his arm leading him back to your seats of safety.
“ Y/N we were talking”
“ I’m tired of speaking about the same thing Zoro”
Zoro gripped his swords and a vein popped out of his neck. You just walk away from someone when you’re speaking? You just walk away from someone soon as you see Law now?
“ What was he talking about?”
“ Oh you know, about US and trying to ask if I knew I was drugged. The regular ”
He gave you a sad smile, you were clearly upset and they were just adding fire to the fuel. You were too kind and so patient, he could only imagine what this would’ve been like if he hadn’t been here. Your situation remind him of when him and Corazon were together and it just made him more determined to help you.
The rest of the night you both stayed together and you were finally able to relax. You’d be on Zou for another day and a half then you’d be with the Heart Pirates until you got home. With both of your knowledge of how the next arch would go the Strawhats would have to let you go with him.
Why would they send someone like you to Big Mom’s territory? The party went on the rest of the night and Law brought up what Nami told him earlier.
“ Nami said something earlier tonight that really shook me”
You tilted your head waiting for him to continue.
“ She said I should snatch you up before someone else does.. what do you think of that?”
Your cheeks burned again, and you couldn’t help but laugh.
Is this his way of asking me out?
“ So what should we do…”
“ I think… well… what do you want to do actually?”
“ huh… w-well maybe… maybe we should?”
You two were both blushing at this point. You both admired each other greatly. You from watching him on the show and him from getting to know you throughout the time you’ve spent together. Of course, you two were great friends but you’d be liars if you said becoming this close didn’t spark something.
He cleared his throat awkwardly before resuming your awkward conversation. “ I don’t mind it— plus this could also help you”
“ O-of course”
“ So then…”
“ So then ask me out…”
His face was beet red. How could you be so bold? Spending time in this world really made you into a new person, you would’ve never done this to a boy from your world.
“ Y/N will you be my girlfriend?”
What are words? Words aren’t coming out of your mouth. SPEAK Y/N SPEAK !!!
“ Yes. I’ll be your girlfriend Law”
The sun was beginning to rise and you fell asleep in his lap. Law watched your chest rise and fall and a foreign feeling rose in his chest making a lump form in his throat. He’d never taken the time to really be in a relationship with anyone, just like majority of the male characters he was too focused on his goals. But being in one with you— even if it was temporary, felt nice.
Everyone else was passed out on the floor and the fire went out, this would be the perfect time for the two of you to sneak away. He shook you softly till you started to stir and you cracked open your eyes to see the sunrise illuminating his skin.
Oh right… we’re together now.
With that being your first thought you wanted to shy away from him even though you were in his lap. This was a relationship of convenience of course so you didn’t want to make him uncomfortable by starring at him like a love struck puppy.
“ I think we have some time before they wake up to meet with the crew. What do you think?”
You nodded and stood up stretching before walking towards the direction of the camp. The birds were chirping and it seemed to be such a nice morning, as the two of you walked you were making casual conversation and it really felt like the two of you were together.
Just the thought made your brain feel all fuzzy, Trafalgar Law is my boyfriend… how silly would that sound to anyone where I’m from.
“ Luffy ”
“ LUFFY !” The captain woke up confused and startled. Nami was hovering over him angrily shaking him awake.
“ Nami leave me alone we were up all night”
“ Aw really? Well Law and Y/N are missing so I think you should get up” She snarled.
That was definitely something that made him shoot up and almost bump into the angry woman in front of him.
“ Y/N and Traffy… are missing?”
She nodded and pointed to where the two of you sat the entire night. The two of you were gone who knows where and anger bubbled inside of him. That was it, he had enough of you two being so close together. You were lying to him and the crew and he knew you were scheming— this confirmed it.
“ Get the rest of the crew! We are going to find out what exactly is going on with them today”

Luffy or Zoro for prompt 5?
Zoro x prompt 5: guys furrowing their brow when kissing passionately
Tumblr media
thank you for requesting this! I decided to go with Zoro for this one cause the prompts just makes me think about someone who finally releases all the unspoken emotions through the kiss. I hope this meets your expectations, please do let me know what you think (anonymously of course!). enjoy!
gender neutral! usual one piece violence, mention of injuries and worries of death?
ffeel free to reblog, like, and leave a comment. i would very much appreciate it. if you enjoy my works, click here to read more or buy me a coffee.- from this event.
That night, a strange feeling insinuated in Zoro's heart. He has never felt like this before, his heart was the only muscle that he was able to move - and not even properly. His heart rate was slower than usual despite the adrenaline that previously rushed through his veins and pumped his muscles, breathing becoming unexpectedly complicated. A paralysing force was holding him to the ground, as his eyes scanned the scene looking for you. He heard Nami screaming Chopper's name, crying for help and saying something about your injury. And since then, time stopped for Zoro. He could not think straight anymore, he was unable to react, to continue fighting. This was by far the toughest battle you guys encountered, and although Zoro knew you were strong, he realised the enemies standing in front of you were definitely playing in a different league.
Fear. That was the unexplainable feeling that completely overwhelmed Zoro, who felt like a massive stone was now compressing his chest, making it ignore the lump in his throat, making it harder to fight. His thoughts were clouded as memories of the two of you just flash before his eyes, thinking about all the times he could have.. but didn't. The worst case scenarios start filling Zoro's head, thinking about how he lost the love of his life without even confessing, because he was such a coward when it came to sentiments - so much that he's now terrified he might have lost something he never had.
Just in time to save Zoro's from a critical hit that his opponent (who was being completely ignored by the swords man) was about to lend on him, you used your powers to protect Zoro, sending your enemy flying meters away from where you were standing.
"What the hell?!" you shout at Zoro, grabbing his shoulders and shaking him lightly; you never saw him so defenceless in a battle, so unresponsive.
Shaking his head, Zoro finally came back to his senses. It took him sometime to realise what had just happened - that you were real, you were there and you were safe, stronger then ever. His eyes quickly scanned your figure, noticing the bandage that Chopper put on your shoulder and the several cuts on your face. You were all covered in blood, a probably both yours and of your enemy's - but to Zoro, you never looked more beautiful.
Dropping his swords to the ground in an unusual, careless manner, Zoro quickly cupped your cheeks and pulled you in into a desperate, frantic kiss. He instinctively furrowed his brow as an unexpected outburst of different little emotions overwhelm him all at once; fear, relief, love, joy.
You slowly pulled away from the kiss, a soft smile forming on your lips. You took a second to admire his beauty, surprised by the way in which Zoro finally chose to make his move.
"I can't believe we shared our first kiss in a battle ground." you laughed, hearing a loud explosion happening just behind your back.

ive been enabled so im making a new post for it <3 n e ways welcome to my list of what characters the straw hats would play in guilty gear strive
luffy - sin kiske/may
ok first of all im entirely biased but luffy would fucking LOVE sin, like the bit of him eating to get buffs would DEEPLY entertain luffy (although he'd use it entirely way too much and get blown up for it)
but for both characters, i think he'd be a big fan of doing like one hit and a simple combo and absolutely DESTROYING someone's health bar, which fits for both of these. he wouldn't be very GOOD at the game because he wouldn't be able to sit still and wait for openings or anything of the sort but boy would he be great at corner pressure (until he gets dp'd)
zoro - nagoriyuki
i swear to you im not just giving the sword guy the sword guy (although that's certainly a factor because i bet you that'd influence zoro's character decision) but like. zoro is also the type to want to do one combo that does a ton of damage
i think he'd be moderately better than luffy and defense and neutral though, being able to open people up with pokes (cough cough beyblade cough cough), but he'd CONSTANTLY spend too much blood, although he plays surprisingly well inside of blood rage
nami - asuka r#
nami is the type to want to stand on one side of the screen with her opponent on the other side of the screen and just shoot so many fucking cubes at them honestly. plus i think she'd be really great at keeping track of spells and resources while she plays
however if u can get in on her? it's over, she has negative defense and constantly flails and mashes her way to death, but otherwise she's a pretty solid player. also, im a wizard's whimsy believer regarding nami so. asuka!
usopp - happy chaos/axl low
usopp is ALSO a zoner main but like. to the fucking extreme. hes GOING to guard crush loop you from across the entire screen hes GOING to rensen your ass for a whole round hes GOING to be sent through the fucking wall if you close in on him
sanji - giovanna
ok so i actually think this is a cool decision because like. we see gio use her hands in like...2? 3? of her moves? like its 5p 2p and 6p and thats about it. and its GIVING SANJI!!!!
i do think that sanji would have fun playing a rushdown character but also he'd get so good at playing defense bc he doesnt want to let gio get harmed
chopper - jack-o' valentine
CHOPPER WOULD HAVE A FUCKING BLAST PLAYING JACK-O'!!!!! i dont think hed be good at strive by a long stretch but hed LOVEEEE controlling the goobers and all the silly animations hed be having the time of his life
the ASSUMPTION might be faust but i think chopper finds him too creepy to enjoy playing him regularly
robin - anji
robin is a fucking MASTER in neutral i am convinced of this, specifically that she can just. get her opponent to do what she wants. so easily. and then she uses spin and kills them! as is her right!!!
this one is more vibes than anything but i do think she'd enjoy spin and counter as moves to just fuck with her opponent in a major way, plus anji just being a graceful motherfucker
franky - potemkin/goldlewis dickinson
franky doesnt want to play your silly little game. he doesnt want to hold your mix, he doesnt want to set up oki, he doesnt want to play neutral, he wants to KILL YOU AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE
this isnt how he approaches things in life but i think theres something about strive that would just make him want to do the biggest damage possible with the least amount of hits and he'd want to land every fucking pot buster and behemoth typhoon to ever exist. unfortunately this means he wouldnt entirely be engaging with the strategy side of the game and would frequently be blown up but if he can get one grab on you hes happy.
brook - i-no
look. ok. the music connection is awesome and i think brook would enjoy mixing you into oblivion but. i have never met an i-no player who doesnt play her at least in part because she's hot. and thats absofuckinglutely how brook would choose who he plays LMAO
like its JUST the nature of the world. but in terms of gameplay yeah i think he'd like flitting around the screen with her hoverdash and divekicks and he'd have so much fun with her pressure and mix
jinbe - sol badguy
ok for legal reasons i have to specify that like i have met jinbe and know him im thr series but not super well so take my opinions with a grain of salt. but anyways i think jinbe would have a lot of fun with sol, he feels like the type who wouldnt like play strive much on his own but REALLY get into it when playing with other people, and i need him to experience the euphoria of hitting a clean hit hvv or getting a wallbounce combo
i also think he's another fan of doing a shit ton of damage all at once but i think he's willing to do some comboing and some setups to get there, and i think he's get REALLY fucking good at stagger pressure it would be scary

The Evil Eye
or: Zoro crushing on Lux Jirou far too hard and being a mosshead about it
Now that I've written fic for all of my OCs except one, I figured it was high time for Lux to get a fic for himself too! This is set during the garden scene in OPLA episode 3 and tells of the first meeting between two dumbasses. This is Zoro's perspective, but I might write Lux's in the future.
Also, quick note: Lux is still referred to as Jirou here because this is before he broke away from Kuro.
Enjoy!

Suddenly, the man on the other side of the pond threw his knife at Usopp, lodging it right between the legs of the “VIP guest”.
“The hell are you doin’ here, Usopp?” he asked in a hoarse voice.
“Buchi, buddy,” Usopp said quickly, somehow managing to sound both smug and anxious at the same time, “uh, Kaya’s expecting me.”
In his mind, Zoro repeated his statement from before: This guy’s full of shit.
Armed with a mop, the blue-haired woman – maybe she was a maid or something? – came towards the pond as well.
“Another one of your lies,” Buchi growled and grabbed Usopp by his vest.
He easily lifted him off the lily pad, holding him in the air with just as little effort.
“You ain’t welcome here and you know it.”
“I know nothing of the sort,” Usopp disagreed. “I’m here to give Kaya an extra-special gift!”
Just when Zoro wondered if he was going to have to save the idiot from getting himself beaten up, a female voice called Usopp’s name. It was a young woman with pale skin and light blonde hair, struggling to walk down the stairs towards the pond as she held on to her butler’s arm. Immediately, the maid respectfully straightened her posture and Buchi put Usopp down, but he didn’t let him go.
“What a wonderful surprise!” the young woman gasped.
With a smug smile, Usopp shook off Buchi’s hands and turned towards her.
“Kaya! Happy birthday.”
“You remembered.”
“Of course I did.”
That was when the butler lightly cleared his throat. Judging from his expression, he wasn’t even half as thrilled as Kaya to see Usopp there.
“Usopp,” he said in a voice one might use to gently scold a child. “We’ve had this discussion. You mustn’t show up unannounced.”
“Nonsense, Klahadore,” Kaya disagreed in her soft-spoken tone before turning back to Usopp. “Have you come to tell me another story? I do love hearing about your adventures.”
“I’ll do you one better,” Usopp declared. “I brought some of my crew!” he said, gesturing back at where Zoro and the others stood.
“Is he talking about us?” Luffy asked in confusion.
Of course he was, Zoro thought, and of course he was going to keep bragging and lying the whole time. At this point, Zoro just wanted to talk to Kaya about the damn caravel – no, he wanted Nami to talk to Kaya about the damn caravel because he sure as hell wasn’t going to do it – and then he wanted to leave.
“It’s so nice to meet you,” Kaya said. “You all must stay for dinner.”
Oh no. Well, at least that meant free food. Maybe free booze, too.
“Miss Kaya,” Klahadore cut in, “it is a bit last minute. I’m afraid the kitchen hasn’t prepared for any extra guests.”
“Please, Klahadore… It’s my birthday. Can’t be too much trouble, can it?”
According to the looks on the staff’s faces, it definitely could.
“Of course, Miss Kaya,” Klahadore said. “Anything for you.”
“All right!” Luffy called out. “When do we eat?”
Of course, that was all he could think about…
“You don’t,” Klahadore stated. “Not like this. For now, you’re not going anywhere. – Sham!” he called the maid. “Where is Jirou? He should have seen these intruders coming from a mile away.”
“I gave him the day off,” Kaya quickly cut in. “You know he needs to rest and… there haven’t been any attacks on this house in years.”
“Just because I have the day off that doesn’t mean I’ll let a man with three swords just waltz right in.”
Zoro suddenly felt his heart stop and his face turned hot. Stepping out from behind a hedge was a young man with slightly messy hair that was neither blonde nor brown and white splotches across his skin. Sitting above a white shirt was a black leather holster, keeping a black-gripped revolver strapped to his body. Somehow, Zoro’s brain seemed to have completely stopped working, and he couldn’t take his eyes off the man. At least his heart was beating again, but it was racing in his chest. Jirou swung a black jacket over his shirt, covering part of the holster. It helped at least a little bit, but Zoro’s mind was still somewhere in a far-off place.
“Your weapons,” Jirou demanded with an outstretched hand, finally knocking Zoro out of his stupor. “Come on, don’t make me search you.”
“I don’t have any,” Luffy shrugged.
Then, Usopp came up to Jirou and placed something in his hand, bright green and looking more like a toy than anything. A slingshot.
“Oh bother,” Jirou scoffed with a slight smile, a smile that sent another shiver down Zoro’s spine. Jirou knocked Usopp against the chest with his slingshot, making him take it back. “Real weapons, Usopp, not this nonsense. You won’t hurt anyone with this.”
Nami sighed heavily, then handed Jirou her staff. Now, Jirou turned fully to Zoro, his hand only directed at him, his eyes feeling like they were piercing Zoro’s heart.
“Your swords, sir.”
“I won’t give them to you,” Zoro declared, his voice hoarse, his mouth having gone dry.
“Then I’ll take them,” Jirou responded.
Really, he reached out for Zoro’s belt without as much as hesitation. Somehow, Zoro was still partially stunned and his reflexes kicked in a little later than he had intended. Still, he managed to grab Jirou’s wrist when he was only mere centimeters away from his goal, his fingers already grazing the Wado Ichimonji’s hilt. But then, Jirou managed to twist his hand and break free, catching Zoro by surprise and now holding him by the wrist. Shockingly enough, he was able to match Zoro in strength! Once again, the shivers were back, and Zoro felt like his legs might just give out underneath him. What was this guy doing to him?!
“Jirou, don’t!” Kaya called, breaking the tension in the air. “He’s on Usopp’s crew, he’s not dangerous.”
“That’s the devil talking, Miss Kaya,” Jirou said, not breaking eye contact with Zoro for even a moment. “I think I know this man and, believe me, he is dangerous. – Listen, ronin,” Jirou hissed, clearly addressing Zoro now, “you either hand me those swords or you leave.”
“Can’t you find another alternative?” Kaya asked. “Please? As a birthday gift?”
With a sigh, Jirou let Zoro’s wrist go and took a step back. Immediately, the air around Zoro seemed a little colder to him, even more so when Jirou stopped looking at him as well.
“There is one,” he told Kaya. “If I can’t take his swords, I’ll have to watch them—” he finally turned back to Zoro “— which means I’ll have to watch the man. You won’t get even a second of privacy, understood? Now, do you still want to be stubborn or will you finally give in?”
Zoro’s mind was running hot, as was his entire body, yet the shivers across his spine kept coming back just the same. It took him too long to process the situation before he said:
“Fine. Watch me then.”
“Excellent,” Klahadore said in Jirou’s place. “Jirou, if you’ll be watching the man either way, would you kindly show Usopp and his friends to the guest suites? – You will bathe and change before dinner.”
“A bath does sound nice,” Nami said with a sly smile, elbowing Zoro – which hurt more than it should have since he was, once again, caught off guard – and nodding towards Jirou, her smile turning into a grin in the process.
Then, she followed Jirou’s gesture towards the mansion, where Luffy had already eagerly walked off to. Usopp followed next – though not after sticking his tongue out at Buchi— But Zoro was somehow stuck in place. It was only when Jirou grabbed him by the arm and almost shoved him forwards that he moved. The spot where Jirou had touched him felt like it was on fire. What was going on? And what scheme had Nami come up with now? Zoro hoped he wouldn’t have to find out. But with Jirou walking behind him, both of them in silence, for the first time, it felt truly, anxiety-inducingly awkward, making Zoro worry even more that the man had the evil eye. No, that was bullshit. Without thinking, he said the first thing that came to mind, which was:
“You gonna watch me shower too, you creep?”
Jirou let out something that sounded almost like a squeak. “No!” he scoffed in a high-pitched tone before taking a deep breath and growling: “What makes you think I’d wanna see that?!”
Zoro failed to scoff back, all that came out being a small, displeased hum. Why did that answer disappoint him?

something happened.
a fic about a captain and his first mate, and what an important conversation may have sounded like.
It takes Zoro a while to come clean. Like, years.
He’s been called everything except a coward but the thought of Luffy’s face when he finds out is too terrible. Too painful. After everything with Ace, he swore he would take the secret to his grave, and made the other Straw Hats swear, too.
But now they’re so close. Any day now Luffy will become an Emperor, and while Zoro knows that he doesn’t even want the title, he also knows that it will change everything. He cannot be a true first mate to his captain—to the King— if he’s holding anything back.
continue on ao3 or read more:
He doesn’t bother talking to the rest of the crew first. It was hard enough to get them to keep the secret to begin with; he knows no one will stop him. If anything, he’ll have to hear from Nami and that damn kinky cook about taking so long to come clean. No, this is just between him and their captain.
Luffy is up in the crow’s nest yelling excitedly about something when Zoro comes looking for him. He’s worried about what to say but needn’t be—the moment Luffy sees his face, he starts descending without a word.
They meet in the not quite unused Captain’s quarters —Usopp uses it for a quiet place to paint, Sanji stores some dried foods in there, even Zoro uses it to train sometimes—but Luffy looks around as if the space is new, stars bright in his eyes. He saw the room when they first toured the Sunny, but he has so few things to himself and hates sleeping alone, so he left it to the crew.
His curiosity gives Zoro a moment to take off his swords and lean them gently against the wall before he lowers himself to the floor. Luffy turns around at the sound of his grunt and Zoro watches his lightning quick glance at his weapons before he follows Zoro down. The stars leave Luffy’s eyes as he faces him seriously, and Zoro is sad to see them go.
“What’s wrong?” Luffy asks urgently. “Are you okay?”
Zoro grunts again in acknowledgement. “It’s about Thriller Bark.”
Luffy sits up straight and furrows his brow.
So he doesn’t know then,  Zoro thinks to himself.  Good.
 Fuck.
He takes no more time to prepare; a swordsman can only cut straight to the heart of things.
“Kuma was going to kill you. I was practically bleeding out; I wasn’t sure if anyone else had even made it. That shitty cook showed up and tried to stand in front of me but he was shaking harder than I had ever seen, and I just couldn’t handle your face if I let him die. So I knocked him out. I told Kuma to take my head if it meant sparing yours.”
Luffy’s face tightens and Zoro continues before he can be cut off. “He fought me on it, but he knew I wouldn’t back down and he would lose his honor if he killed us. Instead, he offered to transfer all of your damage to me. He repelled all of the pain and exhaustion from your body, and gave me a small hit so that I knew what I was asking for. I had never experienced pain like that. Still haven’t.”
Zoro can’t stop himself from pausing to breathe—just the memory of the pain can still make him feel tender to his bones.
“Zoro—“
“Still,” Zoro interrupts. “I would do it all again if I had to.”
He lowers his head to the floor in a bow.
Luffy stays quiet and Zoro keeps his nose to the ground. Even when he hears the steps of one of the crew coming to the door, pausing, turning away, he ignores his embarrassment and stays bowed. The not too loud footsteps and the smell of oil and earth means it was probably Usopp. Zoro wonders wildly what face Usopp must have made when he saw them, wonders if he’s going straight to Nami to gossip or maybe telling the whole crew.
Zoro wonders what his captain isn’t saying.
A few minutes more and his patience runs out along with his comfort. He pushes himself up smoothly and rubs his neck to give himself a moment's reprieve from Luffy’s silent gaze.
“Ach! Luffy, what the fuck!”
When he finally looks up, he’s met with Luffy, his finger deep in his nose in what seems to be a concentrated effort to reach his brain. Zoro is fairly certain he can see Luffy’s right eye bulging just slightly from the internal pressure of his own finger. It’s kind of cool but mostly just really gross.
“Huh?” Luffy pulls his finger back with a snap. Despite all of their time together, Zoro half expects it to be covered in brains and blood.
“Tch, idiot Captain,” Zoro barks. “Did you not hear me?”
“Of course I did!” Luffy flicks a booger away and Zoro bristles in disgust. “You lied to me about Thriller Bark and made the crew lie, too.”
That shuts Zoro up. He bows his head in shame.
“I wish you hadn’t done that. A first mate trusts his captain to protect the crew and we especially do not keep secrets,” Luffy continues, matter of fact. “Plus, I put you and everyone else in additional danger in Saobody Park by letting you face Kuma. I was the only one who didn’t know how injured you were. You could have died." Luffy looks at him with a fierceness he only sees on the battlefield, and the feeling it stirs up is too complicated to think about right now.
"Zoro. You are not allowed to die.”
Zoro stays silent. His earlier speech already consisted of more words than he usually prefers to say at once, and besides— he’s not sure what else there is. Another apology doesn’t feel sufficient and devotion is only expressed through action. All there is, is to accept what Luffy decides with all the honor he can muster.
God, he wishes he had something to cut.
“I forgive you, though.” Luffy grins.
Zoro closes his eyes.
Of course he does. What else could he say? How could he be the man Zoro followed through hell if he said anything else?
Still, Zoro quietly huffs a relieved sigh.
“Dumbass Captain.”
“Haahh?!” Luffy exclaims, offended. “How am I dumb?!”
“You’re supposed to hold me accountable!” Zoro yells back. “Haven’t you ever heard of a punishment? Consequences?!”
“Hehe, I already took care of that.” Luffy pulls out one of the new Stop Motion Transponder Snails and projects an image onto the wall. It’s of Zoro in his deep bow of regret, and Luffy grinning with a peace sign in front of him. He cackles as he scrolls through a few more photos with him in different poses. “You looked so uncomfortable, Zoro-kun.”
Zoro tries to land a blow until the fire in his cheeks burns out and Luffy blocks each one, laughing loudly. When Zoro finally makes solid contact, Luffy takes the hit good naturedly and tumbles over, still giggling.
“You’re a good first mate, you know.” He says quietly. “You could have your own crew by now.”
“Tch.”
“Shut up, we both know it.” Luffy looks over at him, a smile splitting his face and making the scar under his eye look like it’s grinning too.
Zoro reaches over to shove Luffy’s ridiculous hat over his eyes, and when he gets another laugh for his efforts, all of the worry leaves him in a wave. He’s not a captain—never wanted to be if he’s being honest with himself. Too many years have passed to count the days when he stopped thinking of his dream for himself and knew that his life was dedicated to helping Luffy reach his own.
Roronoa Zoro is not a Captain. He’s the swordsman and first mate for the future King of the Pirates, and he will never lie to him—or let him down— ever again.

The lost Princess of the ocean - six
Masterlist
Nami and Zoro were sitting at the table chatting.
“So what did you do?” Nami pressed. Zoro groaned.
“I kissed her.” He sighed.
Nami's hand flew to her mouth as she stifled a laugh. “What is wrong with you?”
“I don't…I've never…” he clenched his jaw tight.
“Is that why you saved her? Just to-” she raised her eyebrows.
“No, no I…I didn't think…”
“But it's happened, you like her. You know nothing about her.” Nami whispered.
“It doesn't matter, I overstepped, she won't even look at me now.” Zoro sighed, leaning his head back against the wall.
“I don't know, just give her some time.” She grins at him.
Across the mess hall the door opens revealing you. You pause your movements upon seeing them, then slowly shut the door so it makes no sound.
Zoro stood the moment you walked in. Without saying a word you pull a chocolate bar from the cupboard and move across to the table, Zoro slides back down to his position with one leg up on the bench. You sit down in front of him and lean back onto his chest, feeling Zoro release a breath behind you. Nami gives him a knowing eyebrow raise and you a friendly smile. Zoro's right hand drops to your waist, his thumb rubbing circles over the satin of your new dress.
Luffy came bounding, his happiness utterly bricking over. He was in love with his new home. He sat across from Nami and began chatting until Usopp came in.
“Check it out!” He holds up a newly painted Jolly Roger. He and Luffy quickly resolve into a squabble about who was captain, broken only by Nami laughing.
“See this is what it's all about. From here on out it'll be smooth sailing!” Luffy's words are echoes by a canon hitting the water outside the ship
“You had to say something.” Nami groaned.
You all run onto the deck and see the large metal ship coming toward you.
“Grandpa?” Luffy exclaims.
“Did he just say Grandpa?” Zoro asks.
Another canon ball flies through the air breaking the wood of the railing. You all drop to the floor, bits of wood flying around you all. Nami quickly takes control of the situation ordering people around. You drop down with Zoro to the lower deck when Usopp manages to fumble the cannon balls and they roll down to Zoro's feet.
Another cannon fires and the ball is hurtling toward you. Luffy does the only thing he can think of, drawing in air and blowing up his stomach until he is able to bounce the cannon ball back and took out the Marine’s main mast.
“Nami, get us out of here!” He shouts and Nami directs the ship into the mist .
Lost amongst it all your illustrious captain smells food in the air. As if searching out sustenance was his devil fruit power he directed the ship toward the smell. A giant fish comes into view and you all rush to the side of the ship.
“What's a baratie?” Usopp asks, confused.
“Everyone's going to that fish ship.” Zoro says, one hand in his pocket and the other slung over his swords. You feel that uneasy mess once more, fear stopped you from talking, from admitting you knew this place.
“That smell,” Nami breathes it in, "I think this place is a restaurant.”
“Then I know what we're gonna do next.” Luffy smiles.
“Disguise the ship so the Marines can't find us?” Nami asks.
“Sail back to Syrup Village where it's safe?” Usopp is hopeful.
“Nah. Let's eat!” Luffy slaps his hand on the railing before charging off to get changed.
“That fish better have a bar.” Zoro said following his captain.
You quickly changed into a simple black cotton dress with a red belt that wrapped around you just below your breasts.
“Welcome to Baratie. How can I help you?” The concierge greets you all. You're too busy looking around the decor to pay attention to the conversation. Eventually following the group down to a booth sliding in beside Nami, Zoro on your other side.
“Your waiter will be right with you.” The concierge bows his head and walks away.
There is a kerfuffle not too far away that you keep your eyes off.
“No cause for alarm, folks.” The voice pulls your attention. “Please enjoy your meals.” The blonde walks toward your table.
“Hi, welcome to our shitty restaurant where the only thing worse than the ambience is the food. My name is Sanji. What can I get for you?” His eyes fall on you and you drop yours to the table.
“One of everything, please.” Luffy announced
“Any drinks? One of our signature cocktails
to help you choke down your meal?” Sanji can't help but flick his eyes to you every so often.
“Giving us the hard sell, huh?” Nami jokes.
“Apologies, madam, I didn't see you there.
Would you care for an apéritif to start? We have several rare Micqueot vintages in stock.
Or perhaps you'd like a glass of Umeshu?
You know, something sweet for someone sweet.” He grins.
Usopp interrupts asking for a beer, the others order, beer milk and water.
“And for the… madam?” Sanji looks at you. You glance up to him.
“Just water, please.” You ask quietly.
“It's nice to see you again, Miss.” He says, “and looking much lovelier than ever.” Zoro doesn't hear the hint of sorrow in the waiter’s voice, only the flirtation. He clears his throat and moves closer to you, putting his arm around your shoulders.
“I see, I'll be right back. with your drinks.”
“You know him?” Zoro asks. You gulp, and try to hold back your emotions.
“I…I didn't remember this place.” You whisper, your body tensing again. Zoro shakes his head and leans back against the booth, his arms folded over his chest. You dig your fingernails into the seat cushion. When food arrived you hardly touched your plate, eating just enough to keep you from starving.
“I can't eat another bite but it's so good.” Usopp groaned.
“Oh man, you said it.” Zoro agreed.
“I'm not gonna be hungry for a week.” Nami sighed happily.
“Should we order dessert?” Luffy asked.
“I already got mine.” Zoro said lifting his bottle, you rolled.your eyes.
“That reminds me,” Luffy began, "We should do a toast. Come on. Grab your glasses. To the best crew sailing on the sea and to our victory! Yeah!” He called out.
“No, I'm sorry. What victory exactly?” Nami asked.
“Against the Marines. Our very first battle and we crushed them.”
The argument began and you tried to ignore them all. A voice boomed across the dining hall.
“Who the hell is Monkey D. Luffy?” The forbidding man with a wooden leg growled.
“Here.” He replied too proudly. You braced yourself for what was coming. Luffy had tried to pay for dinner with an IOU which Zeff was not okay with. The head chef dragged Luffy into the kitchen.
“I need a drink.” Nami sighed.
“Now you're talking!” Zoro followed her and Usopp to the bar leaving you behind. You slowly slid out from the booth, smoothing out your dress.
“Are you okay, Miss?” The blonde man was back. You nod.
“I'm sorry if I made things harder for you earlier. I thought perhaps you were…” he sighs, not finishing his sentence. “You look very pretty this evening.” He finishes.
“Thank you.” You reply.
“It's nice to hear your voice at last.” Sanji smiles gently. You nod once more, your eyes darting around the room, hoping no one else recognised you. Darting from the dining hall you made your way out of the restaurant and sat on a bench on the jetties.

Hey Franky how are you today????
I wanted to ask you who do you think is a green flag to have a crush on, who is a red flag and why, with all the characters you want (could you include Zoro, Sabo, Ace and Mihawk?)
Thank you so much and have a great day/night!!!
I have headcanons like this kinda here I have the 'disadvantages' and 'advantages' of dating OP Chars but I am willing to something like this too!
Tumblr media
Ace: GREEN and RED Why? If you know how to handle the temper, baggage, and self-esteem issues he’s a green. If you want something simple and trouble-free then baby, he ain’t that. He will be asking you if you’re mad at him 12 times a day and will fistfight a wasp on a whim. He’ll also throw hands at himself on a regular basis.
Marco: GREEN he’s very laid back and if you managed to piss him off, you are probably a red flag.
Thatch: GREEN just look at that wholesome loaf.
Izou: RED he will destroy you if you even make a cup ring on his oak table.
Sabo: You might think with that smile he’s a GREEN but oh my God, he’s a RED and if you piss him off you better run or know someone way more unhinged than him. Also, his wardrobe, I could give him a pass if he didn’t look like a Victorian mass murderer.
Luffy: RED Nothing wrong with him, just if you can’t keep up with him you are going to be tired and want to strangle him with himself. If you can’t handle being around children, don’t pursue him.
Sanji: RED oh man, he’s so problematic all wrapped up in a cute suit and doofy heart eyes. He’ll more than likely make you cry.
Zoro: RED unless he can drink you, fight you, nap on you. The only way he’ll hold you is if your sword-shaped.
Usopp: GREEN but he is a lair, coax that out of him and he’s perfect.
Robin: GREEN, not my cup of tea but she’s a queen.
Franky: GREEN he's not wearing enough to be hiding something from you.
Chopper: If YOU are considering Chopper then you’re the RED flag.
Jinbei: Green <3 perfect
Brook: RED it’s like when you think ‘awww I want a turtle as a pet, so cute’ and then the fucker outlives you but on top of that wants to see your panties.
Nami: RED like the card machine when declined comes up after you let Nami use your card to shop with.
Roger: RED he is the human equivalent to people TyPiNg LiKE tHiS UnIrOniCalLy
Rayleigh: RED he’s like a cat, you’ll feed him, love him, pet him and he’ll fuck off for months on end, make you worry, but he’s curled up in some old ladies house because she got the better snacks.
Buggy: RED – BECAUSE IF CAPS LOCKS WAS A PERSON.
Shanks:  His hair isn’t the only thing that’s RED. The one good thing about him is his baggage is in lost and found somewhere.
Mihawk: RED like the wine that you spilt on his carpet that one time and now he has a hit out on your ass.
Doffy: -ME WAVING THOSE BIG RED FLAGS THAT LAND AIRCRAFT-
Crocodile: RED his left shoe costs more than your entire life and he will step on you.
Law: RED his troubles are as long as the grandline and just as easy to read as the poneglyphs.
Kid: his GREEN flag is Killer. If they come as a package, I might let him slide.
Killer: GREEN because honestly, with the captain he has it’s obvious the man has the patience of a saint.
Corazon: GREEN flag you might think it’s a red flag from afar, but I assure you that’s just the fire.
