sister michael so reminds me of the nuns who taught me. they're tough and sometimes a little harsher than a woman who dedicated her life to god should be but they're also wonderful people. i had a nun teacher who was 60 years old and would do handstands. another nun (also in her 60s) told me god was nonbinary. another was really mean and made me cry. (so did the handstand nun.) while the catholic girls school is The Catholic Experience, the school wouldn't have been the same for me or the derry girls without at least one nun who seemed to have sprung up out of the ground fully formed, ageless.

Kurt is a mutant who was born to mystique who looks a LOT like a devil (technically is half one but that cannon truth isn’t real go back to bed), his mother dropped him off a cliff when he was born and he was picked up by a Romani group/circus (fuck old comics man) however he then narrowly escaped being sold to a freak show and found himself in a small German town. There he met a kind priest, who showed him God, and he quickly grew attached to the idea- However, it wasn’t long before people began labeling him a demon and soon the whole town was against him with pitchforks and fire. Cornered and injured, Kurt thought this might be the end for him- maybe he would see heaven so long after finding it- but he was then saved by Charles Xavier who invited him to the X-Men. AND ITS BEEN SO MANY YEARS AND HE HAS BEEN THROUGH SO MUCH THERE. SO MUCH. SO GOD DAMN MUCH. BUT THE MOST AAAA THING TO ME CONCERNING HIS FAITH HE WHEN HE LITERALLY DIED AND WENT TO HEAVEN BUT THEN BECAUSE OF DRAMA WITH HIS FATHER HAD TO BRING HIS FRIENDS IN WITH HIM FROM THE BEYOND. THEN WITH ALOT OF TROUBLE THEY FOUGHT HIS FATHER AND THE ONLY WAY KURT SAW TO STOP HIM WAS IN A MOVE THAT STRIPPED THEM BOTH OF THEIR SOULS AND PUT THEM BACK ON EARTH. SO KURT CANONICALLY HAS NOW LOST HIS ABILITY FOR ETERNAL PEACE, LOST HIS VERY SOUL, TO SAVE PEOPLE- AND ALSO TOLD NO ONE NOT EVEN HIS GAY LOVER WOLVERINE.

Nightcrawler is a mutant vigilante who looks like a classical demon. He can’t even go to church without people panicking and trying to exorcize him. Despite it all, he’s so full of faith and hope and compassion, and he wants to believe the best of everyone. Also, he’s bffs with an extremely angry Jewish sword lesbian. That has nothing to do with anything, but it’s important to me that you all know that.

What if you were a devout christian and literally looked like the devil? He nearly became the pope, which was a plot by some supervillains that also involved faking a rapture? There is nothing like comics I swear to god.

A catholic who is half demon I don’t think I can better explain a struggle than that. But his character is so relatable to people who feel unwelcome with their congregation because of something that is a part of them but still feeling a connection to the faith. Kurt actively engaged in his faith and shares how his faith helps him through all the things he has faced in life and how he found a home with those of the church who leave the judging to God.

so they made kurt a priest briefly before deciding to retcon it, resulting in nightcrawler actually being part of a plan by villains to promote him to pope then reveal to the world that the pope is a demon. wild.

This 1989 (leaked) prologue dialogue kind of hurts my heart and I am speaking solely from the experience of being a 22 year old lesbian. I am very much not a Gaylor because I am an adult and I grew out of shipping real life people a long time ago, especially because while I admire Taylor as an artist, I know she is not my friend and I know nothing about her except what she wants to be public. While I commend her for her inclusion of queer artists without much fanfare she never has been on the forefront of my mind when I think about voices in the fight for queer liberation and I don't need her to be. However the outright glee and homophobia I witnessed in the comment section of some Taylor Swift Fan accounts in relation to that monologue makes me feel unsafe. I am going to her concert next year and am very much asking myself how safe me and my girlfriend can feel in that crowd. I don't necessarily blame Taylor for it because I do not think she meant to cause such a homophobic rejoice amongst some of her fans, as to me it speaks much more about how any semblance of normal interpersonal relationships, be that platonic or romantic, were never possible in the eye of constant public scrunity. I hope we will get some sort of comment from her.

Gay teens who couldn't come to terms with their sexuality share how they removed their breasts and genitals in false hope that becoming transgender would 'cure' them, as concerns mount that 'gender-affirming care' for children is homophobic

They all said they wished their surgeons or those prescribing hormone therapy had asked more questions about their mental health and motivations

A study cited by the paper showed that 80 percent of those with childhood gender dysphoria resolve themselves by puberty

Gay teenagers disturbed by their own sexuality have described deciding life would be better as a transgender person and undergoing surgery - only to regret it several years later.

The young people said that, in hindsight, drastic surgical operations were offered with insufficient discussion or thought. Their stories emerged as concern grows that so-called gender-affirming care for children is homophobic, as it permanently changes the bodies of children and young adults who are not transgender, but merely trying to come to terms with their sexuality.

One told of being abused online by trans rights activists when, after five years living as a trans man, they realized they wanted to revert to being a lesbian woman.

Another, who began transitioning from male to female at the age of 15, now campaigns against surgical intervention under 25 for anyone who has not had psychotherapy first.

Yet another, growing up as a lesbian in a conservative community, convinced herself life would be easier as a trans man and had a double mastectomy - only to revert to living as a woman six years later.

Studies cited by The New York Times showed that many teenagers wrestling with their identity and sexuality ultimately found peace: 80 percent of childhood gender dysphoria resolve themselves by puberty, and 30 percent of people on hormone therapy discontinue its use within four years, the paper said.

The effects of the hormone therapy, including infertility, are, however, often irreversible.

Kasey Emerick, a 23-year-old woman and detransitioner from Pennsylvania, told The New York Times she saw living as a trans man as a better alternative to being a gay woman.

'I transitioned because I didn't want to be gay,' she said. 'I believed homosexuality was a sin.'

Emerick, who grew up in a conservative Christian church, told her mother at 15 that she was gay.

Her mother told her it was likely a response to her father, who was convicted of raping and assaulting her repeatedly from the ages of four to seven.

At 16, Emerick was caught texting a girl, and her mother took her phone away: Emerick was then admitted to a psychiatric hospital.

Emerick convinced herself inside the hospital: 'If I was a boy, none of this would have happened.'

She said she found trans advocacy websites online, and felt she could 'pick the other side.'

At 17, after two 90 minute consultations, she was cleared for a double mastectomy - despite the anxiety, depression, suicidal tendencies, panic attacks and ADHD she was also suffering.

'I'm thinking, 'Oh my God, I'm having my breasts removed. I'm 17. I'm too young for this,' she recalled, but said she went ahead with the operation.

'Transition felt like a way to control something when I couldn't control anything in my life,' she told the paper.

Emerick lived as a trans man for five years, but then realized she was no happier, and began detransitioning - despite online threats from trans activists.

'I thought my life was over,' she said. 'I realized that I had lived a lie for over five years.'

One man, Paul Garcia-Ryan, lived as a woman from the age of 15 to 30, undergoing bottom surgery in college.

He has detransitioned and is now, aged 32, a psychotherapist in New York, treating young people who suffer from gender dysphoria.

Garcia-Ryan told The New York Times he believes no one under the age of 25 should be allowed surgical procedures unless they have seen a psychotherapist.

He said he was driven to identify as a trans woman because he could not countenance being a gay man.

'It was much less threatening to my psyche to think that I was a straight girl born into the wrong body — that I had a medical condition that could be tended to,' he said.

He said that, when he sought medical help aged 15, the clinic immediately confirmed his own thoughts, rather than challenging them.

He said he had surgery in college, but suffered severe complications from the surgery and hormones, which made him reconsider his decisions.

'You're made to believe these slogans,' he said. 'Evidence-based, lifesaving care, safe and effective, medically necessary, the science is settled — and none of that is evidence based.

'When a professional affirms a gender identity for a younger person, what they are doing is implementing a psychological intervention that narrows a person's sense of self and closes off their options for considering what's possible for them.'

Grace Powell, who grew up in a conservative community in Grand Rapids, Michigan, said that she became convinced that her sexuality would be 'solved' by living as a trans man.

She had a double mastectomy the summer before college, then went off as a transgender man named Grayson to Sarah Lawrence College.

Powell, now 23 and detransitioned, told The New York Times she wished more questions were asked before she opted for the life-altering procedures.

'I wish there had been more open conversations,' she said.

'But I was told there is one cure and one thing to do if this is your problem, and this will help you.'

Aaron Kimberly, a 50-year-old trans man living in British Columbia, transitioned at the age of 33, and lives happily as a man.

But he said he left his job at a clinic treating gender-dysphoric young people because he felt there was not enough emphasis on mental health treatment, before surgical options or hormones.

He then founded the Gender Dysphoria Alliance and the L.G.B.T. Courage Coalition, to advocate better gender care.

'I realized something had gone totally off the rails,' he said.

A little positivity here, I really like Amity as a character. As someone who was around her age in the beginning of the show and that also grew up with abusive parents, it was very comforting to see a character who also had abusive parents but managed to heal and find a support group, she gave 15 year-old me a lot of hope that it gets better (it does btw)

I have a few issues and criticisms with the portrayal of the Blight parents (Alador in specific), but I'll save that for sometime later, those aside I really appreciate her character arc

Oh and I'm also a lesbian, she was a great source of comfort for me as I came out shortly before she was confirmed as a lesbian herself, and I was struggling with internalized homophobia, it was also nice seeing a character my age be openly gay, have a crush on a girl, be awkward about it, and all that be portrayed as normal. Despite knowing some lesbian and sapphic characters in media as a kid, none of those portrayals hit as close to home as Amity's

Hmm it’s been a while since I care much about romantic relationships (yes, I see the irony of me, a primarily fluff writer, saying that) but there are some memorable ones that I still love for their dynamic. These are the 5 that I can really remember at the top of my head, I’m sure there’s are many iconic ones but these are just my personal “couple goals” people

1. Roy Mustang and Riza Hawkeye from Fullmetal Alchemist/Fullmetal Alchemist Brother (manga, anime)

Soulmates, More than Lovers

Yes, there is Edward and Winry and they’re great too but Roy and Riza, even when they weren’t officially canon? Oh wow, I absolutely idolised their dynamic growing up. They have to maintain a professional relationship as officer and superior but everyone can tell that they care so much about each other. It’s the trust between, it’s the way they understood each other so much and the faith they have of their partner’s competence. They bicker and annoy each other like old comrades but their bond goes beyond being brothers-in-arms, it’s the way they support each other knowing that they both wish for a world where no one has to go through what they did again. Riza believed in Roy not just because she cared about him but also because she truly believes in him making good on his word in building a better government, and Roy believed in Riza because of her integrity, that he knew she will never be swayed and keep him in track of his dream because that’s just the amazing person she was.

2. Sawako Kuronuma and Shota Kazehaya from Kimi ni Todoke (manga, anime, live-action film)

Friends to Lovers

While romcoms aren’t really my thing, this series was my favorite romcom growing up that I still remember it pretty well after all these years. No hate to the other shoujo animes but Kazehaya was the greenest flag and I can’t be convinced otherwise. He was genuinely kind to everyone, didn’t believe in the crazy rumours and saw Sawako as the sweet person she was, and be that supporting friend to her even when he could tell he had feelings for her. Kazehaya had better emotional awareness and understood how he felt pretty early in the series but never pushed the topic on Sawako when she was still new to a lot of social experiences. Sawako was aware of all the support he has given her and in response, worked hard to make sure his efforts weren’t wasted. It was cute, supportive, and the results felt so deserved and not abrupt.

3. Takeru Takahashi and Hikari Yagami from Digimon (anime)

Will they, won’t they, Childhood friends

I’ve been shipping even before I knew what shipping was. I didn’t know why I love them so much growing. Maybe because I really like the aesthetics, maybe because I’m a sucker for childhood friends, maybe because of all the connections of the crest of hope and light. I thought I grew out of this shipping phrase but nope! I went crazy over the crumbs we get from Digimon Tri. They are such a “Will they, won’t they” duo. I can see them work so well as friends as they do as a couple. They tease each other and are so comfortable together but they are always there for each other when either one of them goes through something.

4. Nomoto and Kasuga from She Loves to Cook, She Loves to Eat

Neighbours to ???

This is a fairly new series in comparison to everything else on the list, but I do love the characters of this series. Not only are the main duo relatable as individuals, they found support in each other. This is a personal plus, but watching Nomoto learning she’s an ace lesbian growing these sweet, wholesome feelings for her neighbour makes the dynamic stand out to me more since this helps show to whatever naysayers that believes that the feeding food part of the story is a kink play of theirs. Like dudes…what? It’s really nice to watch two realistic individuals in a grounded relationship (whatever it is at this point), while going through some heavy topics about societal standards.

5. Seo Dan and Seung Jun from Crash Landing on You (Kdrama)

Villainess x Conman

Seeing that Seo Dan was in the position to be the villainess because she was the second female lead and the male lead’s arranged fiance, everyone would think that she would be evil like all the other second leads in Kdramas, but NO! Seo Dan never outright harm the female lead but instead tried to spend time and win over the man that was her fiance. When she realized she couldn’t and her love is turning toxic, she chose not to continue the path of unrequited love and move on, even though it hurt her because she truly loved the male lead, her first love. Seung Jun was in a somewhat similar villain position being a close-hearted conman who’s not the type to stay for anyone. But he starts to fall for Seo Dan, and hated seeing her break because of a man who couldn’t see how amazing she was. This made me tear up to see that Seo Dan found someone that truly love her, and that Seung Jun found someone who he could truly cherish with all his heart. They got to be the realest and best versions of themselves with each other and were a couple that met the right person, there were just some mistakes to realize it.

Trailer park kids Eddie x reader headcanons

Major implications for southern-esque Eddie. Just growing old together as poor kids

Pairing: Eddie Munson x reader

This is way longer than I was planning lmao. Literally like 2k words of headcanons but it’s cute so it’s fine

(No descriptions of reader, gender neutral)

At least where I’m from trailer parks are a major sense of community. Eddie growing up surrounded by people who would always have his back fueled him as a kid. I know we often make Eddie a sad kid who was hated by everyone but I like to think the trailer park helped Wayne raise Eddie a lot while he was growing up.

When Wayne was working long shifts at the plant Eddie would go over to his neighbor's house for dinner and homework help. The nice lesbian ladies taught Eddie all about Dolly Parton. 9 to 5 became his anthem as a 13-year-old kid who has watched everyone around him get screwed over by “the man”

As his best friend for life, you grew up in the same trailer park, but instead of an angsty teen who is all for bringing down the patriarchy, you grew up to be a spunky happy go lucky person who loves running around barefoot, dancing to country music and singing off pitch as loudly as you can while Eddie just stares with a smitten look. (Obviously, you also hate the patriarchy but Eddie wears his love of anarchy loud and proud)

It’s always been you and Eddie growing up but there were a few trailer park kids who you would play pretended with. None of you had toys growing up, money typically went towards food and bills so it was rare for a toy to be seen in the park. When someone did get lucky to get something new it was a big hit. None of the kids were stingy with their toys because growing up poor you learn to care for those who don’t have what you do.

Having a secret spot for just you and Eddie in the woods behind your trailer. It wasn’t anything special, just a dried-out River that had a lot of stray cats nearby.

You broke your arm falling out of a tree in the woods so in order to make you feel better Eddie threw himself out of the same tree on purpose hoping to break his arm as well.

It worked

Having matching casts. Eddie got pink because you got pink and when it was time to switch colors Eddie chose the camo green plaster so you did what any best friend would do and got pink again

Eddie crying because you didn’t copy him

“It’s ugly teddy, I don’t know what you wanted me to do”

This makes him sob even more. (Ofc the broken arm isn’t what made him cry)

By the third plaster switch you learned your lesson and let Eddie choose for the both of you which made everything better

Wayne saved every cast. Each one is full of signatures from the problem of forest hills. Many of them are relics with names of elders who have passed or families who got lucky enough to move away. It was a weird momento but they were put in a box in storage

I like to think Wayne is a very sentimental guy, saving everything he can of Eddie’s (and yours by association) as a way to try and make Eddie’s childhood better. It’s dumb but something Wayne thinks helps.

Sharing your Walkman together listening to tapes handed down from neighbors. Good music was expensive so most of the recordings consisted of ’50s and 60’s classics but sometimes someone would give you something newer like an Abba or Led Zeppelin cassette.

One day one of the burly biker guys who lived in a trailer on the other side of the park gave Eddie a few of his Dio tapes and that was the start of his metal addiction. (I like to believe Eddie isn’t really a music elitist, he just doesn’t like when people disregard his interests, and metal music is typically talked down upon so he’s gotten used to defending it)

Like I said, he grew up on country and Dolly Parton. He has no right to be rude about other people's musical interests.

It’s just a part of the defense mechanism he built up when he realized that the trailer park and the way people treated each other was just a little bubble and most people aren't that nice. Especially the upper-class folks who look down on you in school for not using “proper English.”

(You and Eddie as well as most of the trailer park kids failed English at least once because of all the southern slang and phrases you used in your essays that were supposed to be professional)

I like to think Eddie has had a screaming match with one of his English teachers about certain words not being real.

“Mr. Munson how many times do I have to tell you ‘fixen to’ isn’t a real phrase” “well I’m FIXEN TO tell you that y’er wrong”

“Mr. Munson, you can’t do that in my classroom.” “Can’t n’ver coulda done nothin, Mrs. T”

I don’t know just young Eddie arguing with southern phrases as his comebacks, his trailer park accent still making an appearance. It’s cute.

You and Eddie were a force to be wreckin with. Your mom and his uncle couldn’t handle your shenanigans

I like to think that all the years of growing up together you and Eddie had sleepovers every night. Even on school nights. Like switching between his trailer and yours. It wasn’t a big deal because you lived next door to each other but it was still a hassle.

“Where are your pj's?” “Left 'em at Eddie’s.”

“Eds have you seen your backpack? We gotta get your homework done” “yeah.” “Where is it?” “Ts at Bugs.”

(Eddie calls you Bug because as a kid he’d chase you around with them. You don’t have a fear of them but playing tag with worms is much more fun especially when Eddie thinks you’re scared)

Eddie had freckles and a gap tooth growing up. The freckles faded because he never went outside in his teen years and his gap went away when his grown-up teeth grew in.

The younger teenage years between you two were filled with tension. Puberty wasn’t fun especially when you both grew out of the baby faces and couldn’t bathe together anymore.

Lots of stolen glances and yearning except neither of you knew what the feelings were so they were labeled as platonic. Even when thing’s definitely crossed the boundaries of friendship it was “just how we act” which definitely made realizing you were in love a lot harder as adults

Standing up for each other in high school. (Having the other kids from forest hills also stand up for you guys. It was a found family of hoodlums of course you were gonna stick together)

You actually weren’t a part of hellfire. You didn’t sit with them you didn’t talk to them you didn’t share any interests with them. The only reason why you knew about any of that stuff was because of Eddie. So you had your own group of school friends that you sat with at lunch

The only time you talked to anyone in that club was for corroded coffin. Jeff, Gareth, and Charlie got used to you being around for practice and gigs even if you had no clue about anything they were doing.

You and Eddie were definitely the type of friends to kiss and say it was just platonic

You’re the only person who has seen Eddie cry other than Wayne and your mom when he was a kid.

Getting detention on purpose if the other got in trouble. School was unfair to kids like you, so might as well get some quality bestie time out of it.

As you got older and Eddie finally graduated he managed to leave and move to the “city” with Robin and Steve leaving too behind. It wasn’t far, the city being only about 2 hours away but daily hangouts turned to weekly if you were lucky.

One summer Eddie brings the gang (Steve Robin and Dustin technically max is there but like that doesn’t count she lives there) to the trailer park for a tailgate/block party where they meet you. Dancing barefoot with Marlene and Darcy, a few girls who you grew up with who weren’t lucky enough to get out of the park. Well, you and Marlene were dancing, Darcy was a few months pregnant with her first kid, but you were sure to include her in the fun. (You three were the resident line dancers at these parties, dancing like no one’s watching.)

You don’t notice Eddie and his new friends right away. In fact, Eddie found your shoes before he found you, thrown towards the side, your socks not far behind. The only reason why you noticed Eddie is because Wayne called your name once the song ended and he was standing next to his uncle.

Running as fast as possible toward the boy. You can hear the pads of your feet on the gravel street the party was being held on. I mean full-on throwing yourself in his arms screaming the nickname you had for him (tater, short for tater tot because as a kid he’d carry them around in his pocket for snacks when he got hungry.)

He wasn’t gone for long. You both had seen each other a few weeks ago but when you spend nineteen years together every day of your life, three weeks seem like a lifetime.

It’s always been an unspoken assumption in the trailer park that you and Eddie would get married at some point. The gossip stopped when he moved to the city, especially because the new gossip was that Marcus (another boy from the park) was wantin to ask your mom for permission to marry you since Eddie was “out of the picture”

Of course, you were none the wiser. You’ve had plenty of suitors but why take any of their offers when you had your best friend Eddie? It’s totally platonic to want to move into a house, share a bed and cuddle up in the mornings, raise a kid, adopt a cat, grow old, and be buried together.

Being in the park, Eddie’s new friends get to see a new side of him.

You convince him to dance with you. Lots of twirling and laughing together. (City Eddie wouldn’t be caught dead dancing to country music)

Screaming the lyrics to red solo cup with each other while pouring drinks (quoting the song you told Steve that he didn’t have a pair of testicles since he preferred to drink from a glass (fuck king Steve who threw parties Idk who that is, I just know sad Steve who was forced to be a rich businessman growing up)

rushing around like headless chickens looking for the props you needed to perform a true southern draw (growing up the two of you lived to play cowboys.) yelling at some of the younger kids in the park for their plastic guns and stealing cowboy hats from some of the elder guys who were sitting in the plastic white chairs strewn around.

Fake draws were serious in this household.

Of course, you both cheat turning and shooting before someone told you to draw your guns. This definitely turns into a huge screaming match.

Letting Dustin have his first sip of beer

“How old is the boy? Fifteen?! And you’ve never even had a sip of beer? Tater you’ve changed, he’s well past his prime your supposed to introduce him to it as his elder.”

Fighting with Steve because he’s trying to stop you from giving Dustin beer but Dustin is all for it. He thinks it’s gonna officially make him a man.

Of course, he spits it out right away. Cheap beer is disgusting, but it’s a delicacy in the trailer park.

When Eddie goes back to the city, he makes a joke about stealing you to come live with him. And of course, you agree. The joke turns into a real conversation about getting you out of Hawkins and it doesn’t take much convincing on his end.

Of course, the apartment he shared doesn’t have an extra room but you can just share his room. You know? Take half of his closet, you can have your own key and share his bed as you’ve always done. And of course, you get whatever side you want and sometimes Eddie would bring you breakfast in bed, and hold your hand, and give you little kisses, but it’s totally platonic with a capital P, and definitely not just dating without dating (mhm yep sure)

The city is much different from forest hills. Eddie has to basically build a contraption that resembles those leash kid backpacks so you don’t run off.

Animation Night 164: Yaoi, Yuri

The fashion on Tumblr lately has been to divide everything in the world into yaoi and yuri, hasn't it? Well, tonight we don't need to make any abstract stretches of the imagination: it's time for anime where boys kiss boys and girls kiss girls.

So. Five minutes ago, before Tumblr deleted it, this post was off to a pretty good start! I was happily explaining about the differences of nuance between 少年愛 shōnen-ai, 耽美 tanbi, ジュネ june, やおい yaoi and ボーイズラブ bōizu rabu on the one hand, and on the other, why 薔薇 bara (rose) isn't a genre title but nevertheless the editor of 薔薇族 Barazoku ('rose tribe') magazine coined 百合 yuri as a distaff counterpart, the 'lily tribe', and that really caught on.

I was starting in on a brief sketch of some history, how Tokugawa Japan was super gay and had a defined set of social rules for gay relationships in the form of 男色 nanshoku, but this was squashed by the Meiji restoration, and thus gay manga became a subgenre cultivating its own specific otaku audience.

So then I was gonna tell you about how the early shōjo manga focusing on gay relationships, taking the old term shōnen-ai [which originally referred to pederasty], were quite nerdy and literary, but the subgenre rapidly grew in the 70s and 80s, cultivating an otaku audience of its own - primarily women termed, somewhat disparagingly, 婦女子 fujoshi but this demographic breakdown is certainly not absolute and there is a term for male fans, which is 普段し fudanshi. We coulda gone into the whole world of doujinshi, of the massive convention comiket; I coulda cracked open Kimi Rito's History of Hentai Manga for some interesting tidbits about how certain images become encoded as symbols and then reused routinely in manga.

And you know, I might have talked about how this is distinct from manga aimed at gay readers in gay magazines (like the above mentioned 薔薇族 Barazoku) which might be termed ゲイ漫画 gei manga. Perhaps we might mention here the upcoming adaptation of gay manga meme sensation kuso miso technique:

I was maybe gonna talk a little about some of the older genre conventions of BL; the masc top or 攻め seme and the effeminate bottom or 浮け uke; maybe a little about how yaoi fandom got exported into anime fan culture in the West and the strange phenomenon of the 'yaoi paddle'.

...well, it looks like I managed to skim over all that anyway. Spite works wonders for typing speed, it turns out. But believe me, that's really just surface level stuff. We're working on a followup to the legend of Animation Night 69, so we'll be able to get in a lot deeper in a few weeks~

Anyway, even today, BL and yuri works rarely get adapted into anime in a particularly high profile way. But 'rarely' is not never! In Animation Nights past, well: on Animation Night 69 we watched the delightful 風と木の詩 Kaze to Ki no Uta (The Song of Wind and Trees), an OVA adapting the seminal (ha ha) shōjo manga about a French twink at boarding school. That was the direction of Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, known also for Venus Wars and definitely the subject of a future Animation Night, it was as moving and melodramatic as you could hope from 70s shōjo. Sayo Yamamoto (AN36) brought us the incredibly charming figure gay skating series Yuri on Ice; and then of course Kunihiko Ikuhara (AN155), bless his heart, made his always bold statements on yuri with Yurikuma Arashi ('Lesbian Bear Storm') and BL with Sarazanmai, which I will surely cover if we ever reach the point where we're like 'let's marathon a TV anime' again ;p

Tonight though? We'll be looking at a couple of relatively recent films on both sides of the fence.

For the BL wing, we have the film 海辺のエトランゼ Umibe no Étranger, aka L'étranger de la Plage or Stranger by the Shore. Kanna Kii, the mangaka, had previously worked as an animator at Studio Hibari, a small anime studio that dates back to the late 70s and broadly seems to specialise in shōjo. Kii returned there to design characters and supervise the film, and evidently Hibari were very excited to adapt the work of their alumnus, because they absolutely spared no effort.

The story centres on orphaned highschooler Mio and his neighbour Shun, an aspiring gay novelist on a remote island in Okinawa. The pair grew close three years before the start of the story, but Mio had to leave Okinawa; we join him now as he returns to that same shore, still holding feelings for Shun.

I'll admit, I don't know a ton about this movie - but it comes highly recommended by kvin who described it as one of an 'oasis' of strong BL works released around 2020. And the clips I've seen - well, they're the gifs used in this post, really nicely drawn scenes of affection. So I'm pretty excited!

Our yuri wing... well, there's a few good choices for yuri TV shows I could show you, but tonight it's late and we need something short and sweet, and that really narrows the field! What I have is あさがおと加瀬さん。Asagao to Kase-san [Kase-san and the Morning Glories], a one hour OVA adapting the manga 加瀬さん Kase-san by Hiromi Takashima. The OVA starts partway into the manga, when plant nerd Yui Yamada has already started dating her crush, the athletic Tomoka Kase. It follows the trials of the girls' relationship as they are coming towards the end of their time at school - relatively low-key, slice of life first relationship typea thing.

The animae was adapted by studio Zexcs under the direction of Takuya Satō, who you might remember as director of the first part of Armitage III [AN153]. Zexcs spun out of JC Staff at the end of the 90s, and they've been pretty busy since then - for me their most notable creation is Aku no Hana (The Flowers of Evil), a truly unique rotoscope anime with an incredibly engaging, tense story about teenagers and the imp of the perverse... which sadly never got the love it deserved! yes I'm still beating this drum!

Anyway, while I have not been able to find a ton of production information, I am told at least that Kase-san was a passion project for Satō - evidently a yuri fan given he also took on the adaptation of Otherside Picnic. It began first with five-minute web adaptation Kase-san and the Morning Glories in 2018 that's more of a musical montage of moments from the series, which was then able to be expanded the next year into an hour-long OVA...

A lot of romance stories focus on the characters getting together, so it's interesting that this one skips right over those chapters of the manga and gets going once the characters are already together, focusing more on the trials of an ongoing relationship between two goofy hormonal kids trying to figure out if this is just a class S thing or something that they want to last. A great deal of effort is put towards character animation, intimacy, the little flinches and reactions. You can read a little discussion about it here on ANN.

i dont ship juliayne (juliayne shippers i do not hate you please do your thing i love you), but goddamn i want more interactions between theyre sooooo silly

ep 13: listen, i think wayne winning is fine. do i love himbos? yes. was i rooting for him in the finale? yes. in the grand scheme of things, do i think he is a good finalist? no. we can all agree that hes very much an owen, and i dont mind that!! i actually think having a fan favorite, comic relief, underdog third party winning makes sense in this season, because i dont think caleb or julia winning would be a satisfying end (especially how they were handling them by the end)

caleb's story was messy, and at the end of the day (and i know that the intentions changed), he did start his alliance with priya to use her. him winning, after all of the drama, after priya was gone, wouldve just idk felt shitty. he did get the girl in the end, which concludes his story better than him winning it. (if im comparing this to the tdi 2007 final three,, i guess hes the gwen)

as for julia, she had two seasons to be villain, and it was amazing. she is so good at what she does and she is such a joy to watch. and we all know how total drama handles its villains, they need to get their comeuppance. did bowie double cross her last season? yes. and she came back still was the main villain and was AMAZING at it. but she was still the villain for another 13 episodes, AND HER GETTING PRIYA OUT LAST EPISODE, she cant win. was her just desserts satisfying? meh. nice callback to heather (we all know julia is the heather of this comparison), though i can understand people who dont like this callback and think its tiring or something. they couldve done something else, but im not mad (i kinda fuck with the mullet). i just see no satisfying way for julia to win with how she was presented in these seasons: she was not world tour heather, with three full length seasons and a greater threat to overcome; she was island heather, and therefore could not win.

overall thoughts of the season:

im someone that thinks the hockey bros jokes nearly always land, so i enjoy the shit out of them (i think im in the majority?)

im someone that did not like priyaleb at first, grew to being more neutral about it, but still found it to be a bit tiring. i like priya, i like caleb, i dont like tiring romantic subplots, and it sucks that that was the entire thing for these characters this season

the julia mk duo was AMAZING, one of the highlights of this season and one that i never wouldve expected to be real. mkulia wins in my heart and i hope they start their podcast (JULIA WAS GOIGN TO USE THE MONEY TO START THE PODCAST WITH MK HOLY SHIT GIRL IS IN LOVE)

it sucks that certain characters really got nothing this season (millie, nichelle, emma, and even axel to an extent).. but i get that characters like millie and emma already had a lot of screentime last time and someone has to be an early boot (just realize the ones i listed off were all women,, damn the writers fr just hate women)

at the end of the day, i really enjoyed this season. and i think the most important part of that enjoyment was this was the first time i got to watch a season and have no idea what was going to unfold. i watched the first four season of total drama when they were airing, but i was a little kid with poor comprehension skills. the first three seasons aired before i knew how to read (i learned to read late). and with tdpi, rr, and tdi 2023, i watched them after the fact and knew who the winners were going in. this was the first season i watched were i truly did not know the winner, and that added to my enjoyment. not to mention this being the one and only time i was present in an online space to talk about show as the episodes dropped. this season was a bit messy here and there, but it delivered some great stuff. i found myself laughing out loud and just having a good time, which is all i need out of my silly little cartoon

After they ran away they met a city elf who helped them hide

Now she has two dads

Chose to become a mercenary after she was old enough

Still sends letters to her dads every now and again even as inquisitor

They tried to get into stronghold themselves when they found out where she is

She also has a adopted sister named Atisha

She’s also mage

She was taken to a circle little bit after Hissera joined the mercenaries

She tried to escape and was turned tranquil when they caught her

Hissera didn’t know until days later and she still believes she could’ve prevented it

She was at the conclave for a job with a few of her crew, they didn’t make it out

The rest of her mercenary group tried to brake her out of haven the moment they found where she was

They straight up tackled her and carried her away

Didn’t get very far

Took a while for her to explain to them that she wasn’t a prisoner

And took even longer to convince the guards at haven to not arrest them

They both thought that the other tried to kidnapped her

Always has a blade attached to the bottom of her staff

Grew up in Kerkwall but left before the Qunari came

Kurt is a mutant who was born to mystique who looks a LOT like a devil (technically is half one but that cannon truth isn't real go back to bed), his mother dropped him off a cliff when he was born and he was picked up by a Romani group/circus (fuck old comics man) however he then narrowly escaped being sold to a freak show and found himself in a small German town. There he met a kind priest, who showed him God, and he quickly grew attached to the idea- However, it wasn't long before people began labeling him a demon and soon the whole town was against him with pitchforks and fire. Cornered and injured, Kurt thought this might be the end for him- maybe he would see heaven so long after finding it- but he was then saved by Charles Xavier who invited him to the X-Men. AND ITS BEEN SO MANY YEARS AND HE HAS BEEN THROUGH SO MUCH THERE. SO MUCH. SO GOD DAMN MUCH. BUT THE MOST AAAA THING TO ME CONCERNING HIS FAITH HE WHEN HE LITERALLY DIED AND WENT TO HEAVEN BUT THEN BECAUSE OF DRAMA WITH HIS FATHER HAD TO BRING HIS FRIENDS IN WITH HIM FROM THE BEYOND. THEN WITH ALOT OF TROUBLE THEY FOUGHT HIS FATHER AND THE ONLY WAY KURT SAW TO STOP HIM WAS IN A MOVE THAT STRIPPED THEM BOTH OF THEIR SOULS AND PUT THEM BACK ON EARTH. SO KURT CANONICALLY HAS NOW LOST HIS ABILITY FOR ETERNAL PEACE, LOST HIS VERY SOUL, TO SAVE PEOPLE- AND ALSO TOLD NO ONE NOT EVEN HIS GAY LOVER WOLVERINE.

Nightcrawler is a mutant vigilante who looks like a classical demon. He can't even go to church without people panicking and trying to exorcize him. Despite it all, he's so full of faith and hope and compassion, and he wants to believe the best of everyone. Also, he's bffs with an extremely angry Jewish sword lesbian. That has nothing to do with anything, but it's important to me that you all know that.

🌸 I was saved by the Lord in 2020, at the age of 24. Before that, I lived a very promiscuous, feminist+ liberal lifestyle. I identified as a lesbian for 6 years, along with being pro choice. I seek to show others that if I can be saved & transformed, ANYONE can be.

🌸 I lost my first baby in a miscarriage in December of 2021. It was the hardest thing I've ever had to walk through, but the Lord used it for His greater good.

🌸 I live with schizoaffective disorder (schizophrenia + bipolar traits). I was diagnosed with schizophrenia when I was 20, and bipolar disorder last year (at 28).

🌸 I grew up in the foster care system from the age of 4 until I was adopted by my last foster family at the age of 16. My biological mother suffered from mental illness + drug addiction, and passed away when I was 13 years old.

🌸 I currently live in a 1910's farmhouse on 2.5 acres of land. Previously I had a homestead, and I hope to one day have one again, but homesteading is MUCH harder than people make it look.

so okay i've mentioned a few things tangentially. let's start with the sweetheart underwear:

which, as i've said before, was bought by (primarily) US soldiers stationed overseas, and sent back to their sweethearts at home. the messages are all some variation of hands off/off limits/don't touch. there are also a lot of popular songs from the time about waiting for your beau to come home, and staying true to him etc. etc. (i really like "don't sit under the apple tree" it's a banger)

but essentially, it was a lot of stuff about reminding women to stay faithful to their boyfriends/husbands—and, in a way, a bolstering for the men: you've got something to stay alive for, something to go home for, someone pretty waiting for you. this is the function that Marge serves in the show, more as a symbol for Gale (and Bucky as well) than an actual character. it's the promise of normalcy, the promise of a "happy" life which is the cornerstone of heteronormative constructs and social policing.

the irony of it is, what the English officer says to Croz at Oxford is true: the Americans during the war very much had a reputation for going after local women. people love to talk about the conservative old times, but the fact is that all soldiers were issued condoms as part of their supplies, and were absolutely given STD education. here in Australia, the US soldiers posted here earned the moniker "seppos": yanks = septic tanks = seppos, because they were stinking up the joint and full of shit, i.e. their loose morals (and looser belts) were infecting our women. the fact is that even though there was a lot of big talk about women on the homefront staying faithful, Croz's story with Sandra was just as, if not much more, common: men posted overseas cheating on their partners.

this is why Gale's devotion to Marge is pointed out as so singular. it goes unsaid, but it's very much an implication around the other guys and their girls back home that the audience isn't meant to take their faithfulness for granted: the letter saying "you are and always will be the only girl for me... I hope"; the way the audience is never shown any of the girls back home (even in photos) except for Marge; the way that there isn't really an 'after the war' explored for the relationships formed on the base. on the other hand, the notion of Marge waiting at home is something for Gale to cling to, and Bucky as well: there is a future where Gale is whole and healthy and normal, a future where he has not only survived but the war hasn't touched him, and Marge represents that. Bucky can't see that for himself because he feels so broken, but goddammit he can save Gale if it's the last thing he does but I digress

what about Marge though??

as during WWI, the men being away did afford a degree of liberation for women left at home. they were able to fill in jobs that they were excluded from previously; they were able to earn their own wages; they were able to wear pants! not that it was all easy (patriarchy was still ruling, obviously—as an example, women still couldn't open bank accounts without a male co-signer, and married women still needed their husband's permission to access any household accounts), but by all reports lesbian culture was thriving as best it could. bars were taking off; butch and femme dynamics spawned and grew in working class communities; there was actually a lot of security felt in the distraction of war. as mentioned elsewhere, i'm leaning on two books for inspiration about what Marge experiences at home:

*yes, this is about the UK and Marge is in the US, but there is some crossover in bar culture etc. and I had it lying around lmaooo i'll share if i end up digging through any of my other queer history books as well!

i don't like the idea of Marge sitting at home, just waiting for Gale to come home. we only see her once, and aren't given a lot, but she's so cute! she's funny! she teases him, and bosses him around! and there is a way to view her scene, especially in the way she tries to play off Bucky, as her wanting to be seen as one of the guys. i love the idea that while Gale is having his tortured, repressed, obsessive romance on the war front, Marge is at home finding herself and getting her kicks while she's still young enough to get 'em.

it's going to be so important for Gale to change the way he sees her, and the way he sees himself; to see that she has given herself permission to be what and who she wants to be, and for her to inspire him to give himself that same permission. it's something that they will need to work through together, but i promise that the outcome will be really lovely for everyone involved <3

spoilers but i can't resist sharing a snippet from part 3, Marge in all her queer glory and Gale being unsure what to do about it:

It’s something, for certain, watching her unbutton those jeans and pull the fly apart. Gale’s stuck stood by the window, curtains pulled and view blocked but light still filtering in, and so he can see it perfectly that her panties are cotton, white and plain save for a letter M stitched in blue just below the waistband. He’s staring at it, knows it’s not respectful of him, but what Marge always seemed to prefer was a nightdress that covered everything, and being under the blankets before she allowed him to put his touch on her.

He's still staring when her hand comes to it, red and glossy fingernail tracing around the edges of the letter.

“Lisa has L on hers,” Marge tells him, and she doesn’t seem at all embarrassed talking about her roommate’s unmentionables. He flicks to looking at her face, and finds that he’s being watched with a sweet smile and brown eyes that know something; the M is wholly safer to look at. “So’s we don’t mix them up in the laundry.”

“That so,” Gale manages, and it sounds too rough for his liking. There’s still a smile in Marge’s voice, though, when she says, “I could do a G on yours, if you like. Or just plain Buck.”

Qualifications:

she's a lesbian and one of her arms has been cut off twice. As in, it was cut off once, a replacement one was stuck, but she didn't like it so it didn't work properly and she tried to cut it off. as a favour, someone else cut off that arm and grew her a new one which is just bones. it doesn't have the same strength of her old arm because it doesn't have any meat on it

amputee lesbian

canon WLW/lesbian (in love with Harrowhark) and loses her hand at the end of book one. In book two, she gets a fancy bone-prosthetic.

Propaganda:

she's had her right arm cut off twice. after the first time she was given a replacement, which she hated and didn't work right. she tried to cut it off, failed, so her crush grew her a new one out of her own bones in the closest thing we've had to a sex scene so far in the series. she had the bones gilded. she's such a lesbian for this woman, absolutely obsessed. "ohhh do up the back of my sexy evening dress for me ;)", and her crush just does it from a distance with bone arms because she's also a weird lesbian. Ianthe's competition for her crush's affections are two corpses and she's losing to both of them

If you like morally corrupt girlbosses, she's your gal! Ianthe is very powerful, ambitious and determined- unfortuantely she's also a bit unhinged and happy to side with god, who in this universe is a war criminal. Ianthe gets her power and influence at the cost of others, but her popularity in the fandom proves we love awful women and will defend them until the end of days even if they're objectively terrible people.
