Roosmav Fic Recs
Did you watch Top Gun: Maverick and think it would be interesting if Rooster and Maverick’s feelings for each other weren’t so familial after all? New to roosmav and not sure where to start? Please enjoy this sampler platter of tasty fics.
Just a heads up, my interest in this pairing is specifically because of its problematic nature (age gap, pseudo-incest, unhealthy dynamics, etc) and my recs will generally reflect that as those are the kinds of topics I like to explore in fiction. These won’t all be pure trash like my usual fare – I’ve had to broaden my tastes a bit since my options are more limited in this fandom – but I can tell you upfront if you’re looking for cutesy hand holding or feel-good domestic bliss, you should look elsewhere.
As usual, standout kinks/tropes and potentially triggering content will be noted to the best of my ability, but please carefully read all tags and author’s notes.
Don't Think (Just Do) by Exorin
Words: 1900
Notes: dubious consent
“Fight back,” Rooster repeats, a barely there whisper tinged with desperation.
Maverick doesn’t move and Rooster feels the way the other man’s body goes lax and easy against his grip, “Get it out Bradley,” Maverick says, turning his face to the side to make sure that Rooster can hear him.
The man with the child in his eyes by hazelmotes
Words: 3110
The day after he almost rips Hangman’s smug grin off his stupid fucking face, he heads to the beach. He knows he’ll be followed. It makes him want to laugh, how things have changed and how they haven’t changed at all. He used to follow Maverick around everywhere he went, glued to his side. He couldn’t have separated himself from him even if he’d wanted to. The earth was made to love the sun.
Toxic Pony by yellow_crayon
Words: 3520
Notes: mistaken identity, dubious consent
The kid staring at him across the bar is young, Hawaiian shirt and blue board shorts, aviators pinned to a thin white undershirt, the V of his crooked collar showing a light smattering of freckles over sun-kissed clavicles. Probably some navy admiral's rebellious kid looking for a good time. Maverick's gone through his fair share of them way back when. This one is at least a decade too young for Maverick's current tastes.
Running toward the fire by Lake
Words: 670
Notes: daddy kink
Bradley's mouth tasted like whiskey when he kissed Pete. Liquid courage for someone who rarely reached for it, steadying himself enough to tell Pete what he wanted.
Pete is stone-cold sober - he wouldn't do this particular thing any other way, and he wouldn't say no, even when the thought of it made his brain feel too big for his skull and his tongue feel too big for his mouth.
Little Orange Bottle by Exorin
Words: 5670
Notes: UNDERAGE, drugged/drunk sex, noncon/dubcon (of Mav)
“Hey Mav, I know it’s late but I was wondering–” he starts, talking at a whisper as he rounds the corner to the living room where Maverick should, in theory, be setting up the pull out couch into a bed for the night - instead he finds the older man already passed out, his leather jacket on the floor, shirt pushed up enough to give a small peak at his toned stomach and pants half-undone; Bradley’s mouth goes dry at the sight and he takes a half step forward.
“Mav?” Bradley tries, wincing at the crack in his voice.
Truer than North by thedastardly
Words: 8850
Brad, much to his embarrassment, had his first real sexual experience looking at a picture of Maverick and Goose—his father’s lanky arm thrown over the other man’s round shoulders and squinting into he sun. Next to him Maverick was smiling, all dark hair and pretty, light eyes, the hollow of his throat shining with sweat from Fightertown sunshine.
What He Needs Is You by Belladonna_Q
Words: 1660
Notes: omegaverse, lactation/nursing
It's been three days since mission prep began. Only three days since he laid eyes on Bradley after over ten years of silent static. And it took only those three days for his body to restart, like a roaring ignition fire, rumbling and lit and ready to go. Three days to undo over ten years of effort.
Seventy minutes by AortaArgent
Words: 19330
Notes: self-esteem issues, dubious consent
The dip between Rooster’s collarbones is right in front of him, tan and shining and he could fit his thumb right against that gap, trace the little notch. The thought is enough to make him feel shame scald his skin, sends him ducking out of Rooster’s way and closing his mouth tight until he makes it to the safety of the sofa.
The edge of glory by writelikeitsgoingoutofstyle
Words: 2470
Wrenches and loose wiring clatter as they hit the cement, and Maverick doesn't even have a chance to complain before his chest is pressed into the hastily cleared workbench. There's a twinge in his shoulder and he can't help but grunt. Half of him expects Rooster to taunt him, after all, it's another sign of what an 'old man' he is - instead the only thing he hears is the solid thud of Rooster dropping to his knees. It can't have been a graceful move, but only one of them will be feeling this in the morning.

fic: Whump. Also hurt/comfort.
me, draped across a chaise lounge in a scandalously cut red dress, halfway through a bottle of red wine, heels on the floor, bare feet kicked up on the back of a nearby grand piano as I pick at a platter of sushi (in transatlantic accent): hmmm…. I find small talk tiring, darling, either find something original to pique my interest or leave.
fic, stammering: um… c-cultural differences?
me, sighing and downing the rest of my glass: oh, why so they always send me the boring ones? Honey, can’t you- .
fic: -and LANGUAGE BARRIER!!
me, slowly kicking my feet down:… I beg your pardon?
fic, grinning: Language barrier. fiber crafts. Irl science and mathematics. Qp relationship. Humans are space orcs.
me, leaning forward, the neckline of my dress getting kinda uncomfortably low at this point: keep talking.

17 and 19! 📚🌟
17. top 5 children’s books?
so hard to narrow it down, but—
A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket is top tier, incredibly formative for me as a young reader
Catherynne M. Valente’s Fairyland series came to me as an adult, but it is absolutely perfect middle-grade fantasy
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass—I don’t particularly like Lewis Carroll, nor do I appreciate literally any adaptation of Alice, but the original novels are still a favorite of mine
my last two are going to skew younger, because I work with preschoolers, but Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak never, ever gets old
and last but not least, Arnold Lobel’s Frog and Toad books, especially Frog and Toad Are Friends
19. most disliked popular books?
this one is hard too, for different reasons. mostly, I don’t read a lot of popular books. secondly, and relatedly, I won’t read a book if I know I’m going to dislike it. as for things I’ve actually read, Hillbilly Elegy is truly awful, and I suppose that’s popular enough. as for things that I love myself too much to ever pick up—Red, White & Royal Blue, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, anything by Colleen Hoover. no hate if anyone likes these, I just know for a fact they are not my cup of tea, yet it feels like I see them everywhere

At some point, you have to concede that the abuse wasn't your fault - that there was no action you could have taken to have prevented it, and that it wasn't your fault.
I used to try finding the magic things that would stop the abuse - gifts, kind words, tears, smiles, pretending I didn't exist - and that was because I first and foremost saw the abuse as my fault. It was my responsibility to end the abuse, otherwise, I am somehow proving to the skies above that this is what I wanted from life. I've noticed that for some people, this is a common impulse. It's the victim-blaming internalized and molded in such a way that feels true, and it's hard sometimes to notice it.
What I want to do is, at the very least, remind you (if this resonates) that it isn't your fault. But you don't need to blame yourself for this, either, because you never deserved this in the first place. This isn't "atonement," this isn't right, this isn't cosmic justice. I can't tell you how to leave this situation, but I will say that you deserve to know that you don't deserve this, that you aren't an irredeemable monster who is being punished, as I've seen some people (including myself) believing about our abuse.
