The cold silence of the room felt like stabs at your inside. You commanded your feet to stop bouncing up and down as you unconsciously started to bite off the dead skin of your bottom lip. The white corporate light from above reflected off your brand new lanyard hanging delicately from your neck. You felt the coarse blue fabric rub against your neck as you mindlessly fiddled with your lanyard; the newly printed photo of your face stared back at you with a smile.
The creak of the door to your left was what broke you from your nervous fidgets. Whipping your head up from your lanyard, you immediately stood up ready to bow to whoever came through that door.
It was a girl. She looked around the same age as you, if not older. Her attire was what gave her away. Her appearance essentially mirrored yours: hair tied back into a ponytail with a white blouse and black work pants. She also had the familiar blue ‘JYPE’ labeled strap hanging from her neck.
“Hello,” you spoke meekly, scared to disturb the cold silence that had a hold on the room you were in.
“Hello,” she replied. “My name is Choi Na-eun, I’m the new social media strategist intern and today is my first day.”
This is so relieving, you thought, another newbie to share the stress with me.
“This is my first day too,” you perked up, “I’ll be starting as the new junior Chinese marketing assistant.”
Getting the acceptance email from JYP Entertainment was definitely a high point in your life. The feeling of butterflies swarming your insides as you clicked the email open only to see your acceptance was immediately locked as a core memory. All the years of memorizing thousands of Korean and English vocabulary flashcards, the panic attacks before your finance exams, and the many, many late night coffee breaks were worth it the moment you received your first legitimate job offer, and from the esteemed JYP Entertainment company no less.
“Chinese marketing?” Na-eun asked. “So you aren’t from here, I take it.”
You shook your head. “I am from China. I completed my degree a while ago with a major in Language and a minor in Business. To be honest, I’ve done internships back home, but it’s been my dream to move to a new country.”
All of what you said was true. Up until now, your surroundings have never changed in all of your twenty-three years living. From the walk with your grandmother to daycare to the vast campus of your university, the view of your city has never changed. Your social circle stayed stagnant since you were able to talk and your love life was — for a lack of a better word — uneventful.
It wasn’t until the day you decided to start applying for careers outside your home country that you felt hopeful. Hopeful that you could find an escape from your inert lifestyle and escape the burnout and stress that has been building up over the years. And so, on a day when you were feeling unusually confident, you gathered up the courage and spent hours sending out applications to organizations all over Asia that pertained to your specific degree. The applications were mainly for small jobs at small companies, however, your strange spike of motivation gave you the confidence to apply to the everso esteemed JYP Entertainment located in Korea. Of course you knew about this company — you and your friends played songs by ‘Twice’ nonstop back in highschool — but you didn’t realize the full power that this company had on the entertainment market until you did your full research. To say that you thought you had no chance was an understatement. This application was so far of a reach that you purposefully forced your mind to erase all memory of even applying.
However, with your education, your work experience, and whatever tiny bit of luck you had, you somehow made it through the initial application process. Then the next. And the next. Then the interview. And now, you were nervously sitting in this white painted room with Na-eun, in a completely new country, waiting for your manager to come greet you.
“So you’re from China? You’ve got to teach me chinese sometime.” Na-eun smiled.
You giggled in return while nodding your head. You were relieved that you’ve met a potential friend so early in your career in this company. This was one of your big worries. With your social circle being so stagnant for the majority of your life back in China, you rarely had the opportunity to meet new people, much less make new friends.
You were about to inquire more into Na-eun’s life when the door to your left abruptly opened. In the blink of an eye, three new people strutted in — two women and one man. They seemed to be higher status than you and Na-eun judging by their attire. All three were styled in some type of blazer and dress pants and there was no lanyard to be found on any of them.
“Hello new employees,” the man greeted. Judging by his face, he looked to be in his late thirties at the least. His hair was styled back neatly and his lips slanted up, giving him a fox-like appearance. “I am Executive Manager Kim. Joined beside me on the left is Social Media Manager An and to my right is Marketing Manager Chen.”
Both you and Na-eun immediately stood up to bow and introduce yourselves.
“Hello. My name is Choi Na-eun, I’m the new social media strategist intern.” Na-eun said.
“Hello. My name is y/n, I’m the new junior Chinese marketing assistant.” You repeated after her, copying exactly what she said. You did not want to screw anything up on your first day, especially your first impression.
Manager Kim reached over to Na-eun, introducing himself and giving her a firm handshake. He then slowly moved over to you, and reached for your hand.
“Y/n,” he gave time for your name to settle on his tongue as he gave a sly smile. “You’re not from here, aren't you?”
You shook your head ‘no’. “No, sir. I’m from China where I studied language and business. I hope to do well here as the Chinese marketing assistant.” You replied, mentally cursing yourself for sounding so timid.
“I’m glad to hear,” Manager Kim chuckled, “I’m sure you’ll treat me and your other managers well.”
You felt an uncomfortable shiver pass through you as he brushed his thumb along your hand before letting go. This feeling was excused as nervousness, after all, this was your first day and your first time meeting your higher-ups.
You introduced yourself to Manager Chen, assuming that she would be the one you were to assist in your time here at JYPE. Judging by her last name, you presumed that she was Chinese as well.
“Forgive me for being so straight up Manager Chen, but are you Chinese?” You asked.
“That is alright, y/n,” she smiled, “I’m not. My Husband is, but I’ve lived in China for more than half my life. I don’t want to brag, but my mandarin has gotten proficient over the past decade or so.”
Proficient? It’s amazing. You thought. This first day was turning out better than you thought. Other than the weird feeling you received from Manager Kim, everything was turning out splendid. A potential friend and a manager that could speak your first language.
“Since it’s about noon right now,” Manager Kim took a look at his watch, “What do you all think about some lunch?”
The other managers nod their heads in agreement and gestures for you and Na-eun to follow them out of the waiting room you were in for so long.
The whole building seemed so clean. With every corner lit, by natural light or artificial light, you could clearly see that every room, every piece of furniture and decor had been purposefully placed. You couldn’t help but have a stupid look of awe plastered on your face as you mindlessly follow your superiors over to the cafeteria.
You turned your head over to Na-eun and gave her a tilt of the eyebrow, silently saying wow, this is where we work.
With the turn of a corner and several silent strides, your little group made it to the cafeteria.
The difference between your claustrophobic waiting room and this vast room was astonishing. With countless tables and romantic yellow lighting, this place almost resembled a five star restaurant. You’ve never seen a cafeteria as extravagant and clean as this before. However, to be fair, you’ve never had the experience of working with such a large corporation before.
The managers led you to the serving station where you grabbed yourself a tray and proceeded to spoon small portions of rice and side dishes onto your plate. This cuisine was different to what you were used to, but nonetheless looked delicious. You were prepared for the small cultural differences, especially with the food, but from everything you’ve witnessed so far, the culture shock would be easier to overcome than what you’ve anticipated.
“Have this soup y/n,” Manager Kim’s grating voice came from in front of you, interrupting your inner monologue. “It’s good for your complexion.”
As Manager Kim hands over the bowl of soup, you feel the sleeve of his blazer brush up against your shoulder, causing the pit of your stomach to drop.
First day nerves. That was what this feeling was. You thought.
You quietly thanked him with a small nod and walked briskly from the service line, trying to find where Na-eun went with the other two managers. Thankfully, they were just a step away and you quickly made your way over to the comfortable spot beside Na-eun. She gave you a small grin and you both followed your way to a table right in the middle of the room.
Soon, all five chairs of the table got filled and sounds of chopsticks tapping and scraping against plates and bowls filled your ears. An awkward silence dominates your table as you start to pick at your food.
“So,” Manager Chen cleared her throat, “after lunch I was thinking we should go to a meeting room and discuss Miss. Y/n’s role in our new project.”
“I was thinking the same for our new Intern Choi.” Manager An cut in, “What do you think, Manager Kim?”
“It all sounds good. I will be accompanying Manager Chen to her meeting room as I wish to also further discuss the preliminary steps for our project.” Manager Kim looked from Manager Chen over to you.
“Project?” You ask.
“We’ve had a very successful year with our idol groups and we wanted to ride this success and start marketing in China. Recently, we’ve noticed a very large and growing Chinese audience for this group. I’m sure you’re very curious now, however we can discuss further details once we are in the meeting room.” Manager Chen replies while taking a sip of the water in her glass.
Manager Chen appeared to be a very professional and respectable woman. With prominent collarbones and wide shoulders, she easily looked the part of a confident and adored manager. She needed minimal makeup to highlight her tall cheekbones, and even with a short heel on her feet she seemed to tower over you. However, her warm and comforting voice was what broke her intimidating demeanour. Just listening to her voice felt like you were back in your high school classroom with your favourite teacher explaining the motif of a sad love poem.
After some more awkward conversations mixed with a few work discussions, the five of you finished the delicious food on your trays.
“Please excuse me whilst I head to the restroom” Na-eun spoke up after your group finished clearing the table.
“Please excuse me as well.” You quickly followed, bowing as you both ventured off to the washrooms.
I should get her number so I’m not completely a loner in this place, you thought to yourself. And so, after a quick inner struggle to speak up, you finally decided to ask.
“Hey, should we exchange contacts? I don’t wanna look like the newbie eating in the cafeteria alone after today.” You chuckled.
“Totally!” Na-eun beamed. “I was actually thinking the same thing…”
And so, you both quickly exchanged each other's contact as you made your way to the restrooms.
The hall of the washrooms were narrow, hidden away from the main cafeteria. You walked in, deciding you only wanted to retouch your hair and makeup before your first official meeting. You carefully fix the loose hairs that somehow escaped the confines of your elastic and dab on a fresh layer of foundation before applying your lipstick which rubbed off while eating. Looking over at Na-eun, you see she’s quite in the zone redoing her mascara.
“Hey, I’ll just wait for you in the hall.” You said.
Na-eun gave you a disinterested nod back as she kept focusing on her mascara.
You walked to the end of the hall, leaned against the wall, and pulled out your phone. Smiling, you opened the virtual Tamagotchi app and saw your little friend staring back at you, bouncing up and down. The bundle of virtual pixels happily bounced as you fed and bathed it, making you happier in return. Playing this game, you were so entranced with your phone that the abrupt closing of the washroom doors broke you out of your hypnosis fast, causing you to flinch and drop your phone.
You looked up, only to see a brown haired man wearing a long sleeved black shirt. The hem of his sleeve fell, covering his hand as he bent down to pick up your phone. He stood back up, fully facing you now and you immediately recognized who he was. You weren’t a fool, of course you did all your research on the artists of JYPE before applying for the job. Looking down at you right now, holding your phone in his hand, was Bang Chan of Stray Kids.
The wispy tufts of his brown hair bounced over his forehead as he stepped over to you. He smiled, his dimple poking out of his cheek, and handed your phone back to you. “I think you dropped this.”
Blushing tomato red, you embarrassingly accepted the phone, trying not to make your shaking hands noticeable. It seemed like that failed, however, as you noticed him glance at your hands and dimple grow deeper.
“Thank you.” You meekly chirped and lowered your head, still in awe that you somehow bumped into a JYPE idol in the bathroom hallway of a cafeteria.
“It’s good that there’s no cracks.” Bang Chan said, looking in your eyes.
You looked back into his eyes. His smile never left his face, and you physically felt the warmth radiating off his body like rays from the sun. Some boring, objective part of your brain knew this interaction only lasted a fraction of a second, but you swore that time froze.
“Hyung!” A distant voice called.
Your trance was broken as Bang Chan looked over to the person calling his name. He turned back to you, politely bowed, and casually sauntered over to the man who called him.
What just happened? Your inner monologue ran, still trying to process the embarrassing interaction. The scent of his cologne lingered, swirling the atmosphere around your body.
Thankfully, you didn’t have too much time to dwell on this interaction as Na-eun finally opened the washroom doors and was making her way toward you.
You and Na-eun trailed behind the managers until you reached the set of elevators. It was there where you had to unfortunately separate from your comfort work buddy as she hopped in the elevator across from yours with Manager An. The other two managers led you to the elevator at the end and pressed the button for your destination floor. The ride in the elevator was silent. You stood there, fiddling with your nails.
Once the elevator gave the ding of arrival, the three of you headed down a hall where you presumed had the meeting room.
Manager Kim took a look at the watch on his wrist. “We are a minute late, everybody should be there already. Enter silently and respectfully.” He said in a stern voice.
You reached the frosted glass door of the meeting room and entered through the already opened door. The managers followed behind you with Manager Chen being the last one in and closing the door.
Your eyes widened at whom you saw.
There was Bang Chan, who sat in all his glory, staring right into your eyes with his mouth ajar. His shocked expression didn't last long, however, as he quickly composed himself to fit with the professional atmosphere of this room.
But why was he here? You thought. He’s an artist, isn’t this a management meeting?
Your inner monologue was broken by Manager Kim’s stern voice. “Y/n, why don’t you sit with me for today?” He asked with a slight tilt of the lips. His hand was hovering above your back, almost guiding you to the seat just right of the head chair.
Your heart rate quickened. There was no way that you could handle sitting right beside a high position manager on your first day. You barely knew what your duties entailed, you definitely could not handle the pressure of this seat today. You whipped your head around to look for Manager Chen. She was already sitting in her seat, looking like she was right at home.
“Manager Kim, if you don’t mind, I would like to sit in this position for today, '' a voice spoke up, “I have a lot of new ideas I’d like to share that are written in my notes.”
Bang Chan.
He paused a brief second, eyes switching between you and Manager Kim, and raised his iPad to show the screen filled with words.
“I don’t mind at all, go ahead.” Manager Kim monotonously replied. He then made his way to the head chair.
You looked over at Bang Chan, trying to subtly send the most grateful facial expression over to him. He returned your look, slightly grinning as his fingers tapped on the screen of his iPad and sat down to the right of Manager Kim. You looked over to see Manager Chen gesturing you to sit in the chair beside her and swiftly made your way over. At your seat, she handed you a notepad and pen, both adorned with the JYPE logo.
“Now, as of 1:02 p.m., September first, the meeting will officially begin.” Manager Kim clasped his hands together on top of the table. “As most of you already know, we are in the preliminary stages of planning a Chinese debut for our artist group ‘Stray Kids’. All we have right now is the estimated timeline, which is four months. We have a basic grasp of the concept we are working towards, however, as you all know, trends are always changing and growing. While we are working to create a new and original concept for Stray Kids, we also want the concept to gather as much audience reception as possible.”
Wow. That was a lot to take in. Your hands struggled to keep up with writing down what Manager Kim was saying. You knew this relatively new group was really starting to explode in the past year, but a debut in another country? This group must work really hard to even have the company consider a step as risky as this. So this is why Bang Chan is also involved in this meeting.
You peaked your head up from your notepad. Bang Chan sat across from you, one hand on his chin and the other one holding the pen to his tablet.
Manager Kim then carefully discussed the duties that each group in the room would take. Many of the jobs were directly involved with developing the concept itself, such as producing music, concept art, and theme development. Your pen never took a break from gliding on the notepad as you hurriedly jotted down everything that Manager Kim said.
Eventually, Manager Kim’s delegations moved to Manager Chen. “Manager Chen, I’ll let you take over from here.”
“Thank you Manager Kim,” Manager Chen cleared her throat. “While my main job here was to market Korean comebacks towards the Chinese audience, this new project changes things up a bit. Now, not only will I be in charge of marketing to the Chinese audience, but I will also be directly in charge of the concept itself. I will be working carefully with our team in China to monitor the trends which we can incorporate into our debut.
“This is my new assistant, y/n,” She turned and gestured to you. You politely nodded your head. “She will be gathering information on useful trends and reporting back to me, as well as some translating. Please report any ideas that you deem useful to her by the end of every week for her to sort through and deliver to me.”
You almost want to call Manager Chen crazy for giving you so much power, after all, you were only starting out as her assistant. Despite this, however, you were determined to go above and beyond with the new responsibilities given to you, after all, you knew that choosing to work in an organization as big as JYPE would take blood, sweat, and tears.
After some clarifications given by Manager Chen and a few more questions directed at her, Manager Kim took the reins back in his hands.
“Now, as I’m sure you all know, this is Bang Chan: the leader of Stray Kids. Although our management team is in charge of this debut, we like to include the opinions of artists whenever possible. He will make an appearance whenever he can and act as a representative of Stray Kids, sharing their ideas and opinions.” Manager Kim explained.
Bang Chan politely introduced himself, and quickly went on to express some concerns of his members. He made sure that each concern was answered thoroughly by Manager Kim before moving on to the next.
“As for our concept ideas,” Bang Chan’s soft brown eyes met yours, “will I have to report to y/n?”
You felt your ears redden.
“You could, yes,” Manager Kim straightened his back, “but if you find the weekly deadlines too much of a problem, you may just report to me or at any subsequent meeting.”
“No worries sir,” Bang Chan’s eyes lingered on yours for a fraction of a second more before grinning at Manager Kim, “I’m always punctual.”
The rest of the meeting consisted of more introductions and preliminary plans. After about an hour, everybody seemed satisfied with the contents of the meeting and were starting to pack up all their clutter on the table. You looked over at Manager Chen, silently asking what should I do next?
Manager Chen smiled. “Let's head to my floor. I can give you a quick tour, you can get settled at your desk. I have some paperwork that I’m almost done with; I’m sure you’ll have no problem finishing it for me.” She already was standing up and straightening over the creases of her jacket.
You stood up as well and followed behind Manager Chen like a lost baby duckling. You both made your way over to Manager Kim to bid farewell. You politely thanked him, said your goodbyes, and were about to leave when he stopped the two of you.
“Manager Chen, let’s go out for drinks tonight.” Manager Kim took a look at the intricate watch on his wrist. “With our whole team, of course. It’ll be a welcoming night and we can get to know the people on our team better.”
“That’s a great idea, Manager Kim,” Manager Chen nodded at his idea in approval. She turned on her iPad to quickly get a glimpse at her schedule. “What do you think y/n? Can you make it tonight? I know this is very last moment, but I think it’ll be a great opportunity for you to get to know your coworkers better.”
“I should be able to make it.” You definitely could make it. You had no plans anyways.
“Am I invited to this top secret party you’re all having?” A now very distinguishable voice came from behind you. Bang Chan stared at Manager Kim with a very mischievous expression.
“Would your manager allow it?” Manager Kim questioned, knitting his eyebrows.
“I’m on a diet, so I can’t drink alcohol or eat anything,” Bang Chan’s nose scrunched up in annoyance, “but I want to be as involved as I can. Just because I’m an idol doesn’t mean I can’t help behind the scenes as well.”
“Very well,” Manager Kim nodded with a fixed expression, “Let’s all meet at that restaurant about a block away west. I’ll go tell the others.” And with that, Manager Kim left you, Manager Chen, and Bang Chan to stand in awkward silence.
“Well,” Bang Chan cleared his throat and clapped his hands together, “I’ll get going as well to do some work now, but it was nice meeting the both of you.”
“You as well.” Manager Chen replied for the both of you and Bang Chan left soon after.
Manager Chen then led you to the elevators again and you headed up yet another few floors to reach your destination. You nervously fiddled with your hair as you silently waited behind your boss, looking up at the smooth lines of her blazer every few seconds. The elevator doors dinged, letting you know of its arrival. The two of you swiftly headed out the elevators and walked to what you presumed was Manager Chen’s office area. You kept following behind Manager Chen in silence before you stopped in front of a set of doors that looked identical to the ones at the previous meeting room. Manager Chen opened the doors for you, and you headed in.
You paused a step in, looking wide-eyed at the interior. The office was clean. A big glass desk sat right in the middle of the vast room in front of a huge set of windows. There were a couple of soft looking chairs placed right before the desk with a huge rug right underneath it. Over to your left, you spotted a water dispenser with a kettle right beside it. You stared at the room a bit longer before realizing you must have looked very stupid with that astonished look on your face.
“Is this your office, Manager Chen?” You asked.
“Yes. It seems that you like it,” She chuckled. You felt the heat rise to your ears.
“Since you’ll be working so close to me, I’m sure you’ll be happy to come here more often.”
“Thanks.” You awkwardly laughed. You blamed your bad response on the fact that you still weren’t familiar with the language, not your blatant awkwardness.
Manager Chen made her way over to her desk, picking up a small stack of papers. “These are some letters I’ve received from several designer companies in China. Since we are still in the very preliminary stages of this project, we would like to keep our options open for the stylists here.” She picks an annotated letter from the pile. “I’ve translated and created a summary of the main points of this letter. There are a few more left which I believe I can trust you with. Just do as I did with this letter and add the sample pictures along with it.”
You quickly complied, taking the stack of papers from her hands.
“I’ll show you to your new work space.” She led you out of your office and over to a cubicle that wasn’t too far away. It was considerably smaller compared to Manager Chen’s office, but you thought it had a certain coziness to it. Plus, working close to your coworkers could also boost your motivation. “Here is your desk, it’s not the most exciting thing, but you may bring photos or whatnot to decorate it. Now, I’ll let you settle in and get started on your work. You can meet me at my office around six, I can double check your work before we leave.”
You thanked her before she left and immediately got started on your work. You diligently translated the whole of the letters before picking out the main points that matched with Manager Chen’s example. After this was done, you included the photos that came with each letter and slipped them into their own cozy folder. This work was monotonous, sure, but it was something you needed on your hectic first day here.
You were so captivated by your work that you completely forgot about the time. The sun was starting to set, and you only remembered to look at the time after you tucked your last letter neatly in its folder. You briefly panicked, praying that you weren’t making your manager wait. Thankfully, it was only a quarter until six. You took the next fifteen minutes double checking your work, making sure to also check the time every once in a while. At exactly six, you left your desk and scurried over to the big doors of Manager Chen’s office.
Knocking a couple times, you waited patiently to be let in.
“Come in.”
You let yourself in, handing the papers to your manager, then sat quietly in one of the chairs before her desk, crossing your fingers together. You fiddled with your thumbs, patiently waiting for Manager Chen to speak up.
“Not bad, this is some decent work.” Manager Chen announced as soon as she finished glossing over your work. “I’ve noted some places that you can either fix or improve. I’ll scan them and hand you a copy tomorrow.”
You let out a breath that you didn’t know you were holding. A tidal wave of relief washed over you as you let yourself relax further into your chain. Not bad, this is some decent work. You proudly repeated this moment in your brain. Although you were disappointed with the mistakes that you let slip through, to get somewhat of a compliment on your first day meant a lot to you.
“Shall we get going now?” Manager Chen asked.
You grabbed your bag and stood up. “I’ll let you lead the way.”
                                                         _______
It seemed like all you were doing on your first day was following Manager Chen around like a lost puppy. The situation right now was no exception either, as you tried to copy her confident strides over to the restaurant a block down. You watched the busy rush hour streets and sidewalks fill with people, some people going home after a long day, some people going to party just like you.
Soon, after a few more minutes of walking, the both of you arrived at the small wooden doors of the restaurants. It seemed like the both of you were a bit late as Manager Kim was already waiting in front of the entrance with the rest of the team. Bang Chan was also there, head down looking at his phone.
“Sorry we’re late, have you been waiting for long?” Manager Chen somehow sounded confident despite making everybody wait on her.
Her voice seemed to have caught everybody’s attention. You watched as Bang Chan swiftly turned his head up from his phone, his eyes making contact with yours. You immediately focused your eyes somewhere else, trying to casually play off the fact that your eyes subconsciously drifted to him.
“We’ve only been waiting for a couple minutes.” Manager Kim gave a tight smile. “Let’s go in before you all get too cold.”
Your little group of around ten people slowly entered the doors, filling the restaurant. Manager Kim called over a waitress, signaling that you had ten people in your group, and let the waitress lead you all to a long wooden table.
The restaurant was nice, nothing too fancy, but that’s how you could tell the food was good. With dim lighting and tightly packed tables, it made you feel fuzzy and warm on the inside.
However, your thoughts on the restaurant were soon broken by a hand on your shoulder.
“Y/n, why don’t you sit with me?” Manager Kim’s lips curled up, “After all, this is a work gathering, how good of a boss would I be if I didn’t even treat my newest team member to a drink?”
Your brain was in shambles. You seriously didn’t feel comfortable sitting with him all night. However, the logical side of your brain was saying something different. He’s just being nice as a boss. You don’t know how people in this country act anyways, stop being paranoid.
It seemed like your inner turmoil was taking longer than necessary, as you heard another familiar voice speak up.
“Manager Kim-” Bang Chan called out.
“You don’t need to sit with me here, Bang Chan.” Manager Kim chuckled as he stared directly in Bang Chan’s eyes. “I’d rather not talk about work outside the office.”
You watched as Bang Chan’s eyebrows furrowed, looking back to you in reluctance. You smiled at him before turning your attention to Manager Kim. It was just one night, right? Plus, there’s no harm in establishing a good impression with your boss.
“I’ll sit with you, Manager Kim.” You smiled, “thanks for offering.”
And so, you took your seat next to Manager Kim at the table. Bang Chan, who was to your left, looked askance at Manager Kim for a brief second before his facial expression did a complete 180. His familiar, boy-ish smile was plastered on his face like it was the most natural thing.
When the menus came, everybody at the table — including you — started to order onslaughts of food and alcohol. After brief moments of casual chatter about topics such as the weather or how good the food was here, everything that was ordered arrived at your table.
You grabbed a can of beer and started sipping on it. You’ve drank before — of course — with your old friends at university, but it’s been at least a year since you last did. Better ease myself in. You thought.
However, your preconceived plans were ruined when a small glass of clear liquor got pushed in front of you.
“Y/n, surely you aren’t going to sip on that can all night.” The ends of Manager Kim’s lips curled up.
“Wasn’t planning to, sir.” You replied while tipping the glass up and into your mouth. The bitter liquid burned your throat as it went down. You took a moment to recollect your surroundings. Seems like your tolerance was higher than you thought.
“Bang Chan, do you not drink? Why not eat something then?” Manager Chen pointed to the food on the table.
“No can do ma’am, I’m on a strict diet. My manager would kill me.” Bang Chan pointed to his glass of water.
“In that case,” Manager Chen filled another glass, “Y/n, have another drink.” She slid the glass down the table in front of you.
You gladly accepted your second drink, downing the alcohol in one go. Your eyes instinctively squeezed together as you felt your throat burn. From the tips of your ears to the ends of your toes, your whole body felt warm and alive.
You lost track of the time. As your conversations got livelier, your head got fuzzier. You stopped counting your drinks after four, especially since so many people were eager to offer the new employee a drink. Although your vision was starting to blur, you could still think straight. I can still think, you thought to yourself, still — what a powerful buzz.
Your thoughts ran rampant in your mind as you stared at the lightbulb across the room. What a pretty light. So bright. Warm.
“Y/n.”
Was the light calling your name?
“Y/n!”
Your eyes focused again and snapped away from the lightbulb. Where was the voice coming from? You slowly turned your head. Bang Chan.
“Hi.” You smiled.
“Hi.” He smiled back. So bright. Warm. “It’s been hours and I haven’t even offered you a drink yet.”
You tried to focus your eyes on his face as he slid the glass over to you. One more drink wouldn’t hurt your buzz, right?
You gladly accepted, slowly moving your hand over to the glass to pick the clear liquid up. It went down in one go just like all the others.
Huh? Was this water?
You struggled to focus your eyes on the person who offered you the drink. “That was yummy.”
“I bet it was,” the talking blur chuckled, “How about another one?”
You nodded, then took the glass he slid towards you. It’s funny how water flows even when in a cup. Water. You needed to pee.
“Hey,” your words dragged out, “where’s uh, where’s the washroom?”
“Follow me. I’ll show you.” Manager Kim stood up and reached his hand out towards you. You didn’t want to take it, but it seemed like nobody was noticing his offer.
Reluctantly, you took his hand and stood up, only to stumble down again. Did your knees not want to listen?
“Whoa there, better hold on.” Manager Kim said.
“No, I can walk. I-I can walk.” You let go of Manager Kim and tried to focus all your brainpower on moving your feet in a straight line. This tactic only worked for a second, however, as your knees gave in and you stumbled down.
“It’s obvious that you can’t.” Manager Kim’s lips turned up. “It’s time for you to go home. I’ll take you back.”
What? No. You didn’t want Manager Kim to take you home, not after all the awkward events of today and the general vibe from him. You tried to express your thoughts, but nothing came out of your mouth.
“Manager Kim, you’ve been drinking!” Bang Chan’s voice came from some part of the room. “It’s not safe to drive, I’ll call a taxi for you.”
“What about Y/n here? I’ll get a taxi for us both.” Manager Kim said.
“I called my manager earlier to pick me up, we can drop her off along the way. It’s not a good idea to put two drunk people in a car. I’m completely sober right now, so let me do all the work.” Bang Chan grinned, patting Manager Kim on his shoulder.
“Is that what you want, Y/n?” Manager Kim glared.
You dizzily nodded.
“Alright. In that case, I can call my own taxi later.” Manager Kim grimaced.
“Stay safe, Manager Kim.” Bang Chan smiled. He turned to you. “My manager’s been waiting outside for a while now, do you want to leave now?”
You nodded. You tried to start walking again, but your damn knees just wouldn’t listen.
“Do you want to hold on to me?” Bang Chan knitted his brows together and held out an arm.
“I,” you slurred, “can walk.” You tried to start your feet again, only to end up stumbling down.
“I know you can,” Bang Chan said as he reached his hands out to stabilize you, “but — ah —  I’m really tired after today. Can you hold on to my arm so I won’t fall out of exhaustion?”
You agreed to help him. Bang Chan waved to everybody still at the table before leading the two of you out to a black SUV. He allowed you to stumble your way in the back seats first before sliding in himself. He asked you for your address, which took many tries for you to accurately type it into his phone.
You leaned your head against the window, staring at passing blurred lights as Bang Chan’s manager started driving. Just being away from the loud and bright environment seemed to have cleared your head a little, but the pounding would not stop. You cursed yourself for being so irresponsible on your first day, especially because you were still alone in this new country.
“Hey,” you felt a gentle tap on your shoulder, “want some water?” You looked over to see Bang Chan holding out a plastic bottle with the lid screwed off.
You languidly reached your hand out for the bottle and gulped down as much water as you could in one breath before handing it back to him. The street lights started getting blurrier as you tried to fight exhaustion, the muscles in your eyelids starting to get more and more uncontrollable.
“Y/n.”
“Hmm?”
“Don’t fall asleep yet, we’re almost there. Ten more minutes.”
You couldn’t hear anything after that, however, as you felt your eyes give up on you and your body fall into a deep sleep.
“Y/n… Y/n.” A familiar voice called.
You fluttered your eyes open, your head pounding. Not knowing where you were, you surveyed your surroundings in a panic. It seemed as though you were in the back of a car… Parked outside of your apartment building?
“Hey, you’re finally awake.” Bang Chan’s voice entered your ear. It all came rushing back to you; the restaurant, the drinking, entering the SUV.
“How long have we been parked here?” Your groggy voice sounded inhuman. You had to clear your throat a couple times.
“It’s only been twenty or so minutes. I’m not allowed to leave the car, are you able to get home alone? I can ask my manager to go with you.” Bang Chan scratched the back of his neck.
“I should be fine.” You mumbled, a bit embarrassed to have fallen asleep in the car of a person you just met that day. This wasn’t even his car, it was his manager’s.
“Hey… can I put my number in your phone?” Bang Chan avoided your eyes. “Just so you can tell me when you get home.” He quickly added.
“Okay.” You awkwardly handed him your phone with your contacts already opened. He quickly typed his phone number in before handing it back to you.
“Text me when you get home. Remember to lock your door, okay?”
You thank both him and his manager before hurrying back to your apartment. Your head was still pounding unrelentlessly as you pressed the elevator button for your floor. The events of today were still unprocessed in your brain. You met a potential friend, which was a highlight. However, you also met two higher up managers and an actual idol, only to get hilariously drunk in the presence of. At least it’ll make a good story to tell my mom. You thought.
In no time, you made it in your apartment and locked the door behind you, remembering what Bang Chan told you in the car. You texted the new number in your phone.
Y/n: Hi. It’s y/n. I just entered my apartment.
Not even a minute later, your phone lit up, signaling a new text message.
Bang Chan: great!! remember to lock the doooor hahaha ( ◕ω◕✿ )
You subconsciously grin at your phone. Cute. Throwing your phone haphazardly on your bed, you begrudgingly began your night routine. After washing up and throwing on a random shirt from your closet, you fell on your bed ready to sleep. You were about to close your eyes when your phone lit up again with a ding. It was another text.
Bang Chan: Hey… Just so you know, if you ever feel unsafe around the office just tell me okay? I’ll always try to help you in whatever way I can.

Yukino hummed to herself, grabbing a quick snack from the pantry. She'd participated in the UA entrance exam a few days ago and to be honest she was still a little drained from it. Still, she felt like she did pretty well. No way she wasn't getting into the hero course.
"Yuki-chan!" her brother shouted, running into the room with an envelope in his hands. "It's the letter from UA! It looks like you got in!"
"Oh?" she said, opening up a granola bar. "You didn't open it, did you?"
"Oh no," Nii-chan said, "it just looks like the one I got when I was accepted." He tossed the envelope to Yukino. "Now, just remember that, when you get into UA, you should be on your best behavior."
Yukino rolled her eyes and groaned. "Do you really think I won't behave?"
He shrugged. "I'm just making sure. I know some of the teachers at your old school had a tendency to... look away when people with 'heroic' Quirks acted up."
Yukino snarled, clenching her fists. "What, and you think I'm like those bullies?"
Ryuji winced. "N-no, I just meant that UA has higher standards than that, and you should-"
Yukino threw the now-frosted acceptance letter on the floor. "Know what?" she said coldly. "I changed my mind. Gonna see what other hero schools there are before I restrict myself to UA."
"Yuki-cha-" Ryuji started to say, but shut up when Yukino glared at him.
"Goodbye, Ryuji," she growled, then stormed off.

Mulan-sensei had spent the last half-hour berating the entire class about safety. Odd, Yukino didn't think any of the teachers actually cared about that by now. Finally, she was getting to the point of this exercise. "So today you'll be doing a mock rescue exercise." She pointed behind her, at the same dirt cityscape they'd used the last time Mulan-sensei dragged them out to do an exercise. Except this time it was ruined, like there was a massive supervillain attack or natural disaster or something. Wow, did they really have the budget to destroy one of their dirt training course mockups?
"You'll lose points for any injuries that occur, both to yourself and the mock victims. And you get points for every victim you rescue. We're not telling you how many points you have, lose, gain, or need to pass, so you don't simply stop when you have enough to make it. Heroes don't stop saving people until they're sure that there's nobody left to save, so neither will you. Of course, the ruined state of the cityscape means that parts of it might not be safe."
Yukino scoffed. Here Mulan-sensei was telling them to be safe while admitting she was sending them into somewhere dangerous. At least make sure nothing would collapse and kill someone!
"Because of that, my Quirk effects will be flying around the area." She pointed to Mushu-chan, who was floating around her head, when she said 'Quirk effects.' "If anyone gets injured they are to whistle so they can be rescued."
Yukino bit her lip. 'Quirk effects...' She'd tried to ignore it before, but... Mulan-sensei calling her dragons that was starting to really bother her.
"Mommy! What's that big lizard thing doing here?" "Ugh, did the demon woman have to come?" "Sorry, we don't want any weird monsters in our club!"
Maybe Yukino was making connections where there were none, but... The way Mulan-sensei called Mushu-chan and the others Quirk effects and stuff like that, only begrudgingly referring to them by their actual names... It felt disgustingly familiar to the sorts of dehumanizing remarks she and her family occasionally received due to her grandfather's Quirk and the mutations he passed down. Now, normally Yukino would at least try to talk to her about how the language she was using concerned her, but... Yukino glared at Fuwa-chan... the last time Yukino brought her concerns up to a teacher she didn't feel like it was properly addressed. So she just added it to the list of reasons she would be leaving this half-baked, understaffed, ill-funded travesty of a hero school and never look back. Mulan-sensei was still talking, but Yukino couldn't bring herself to listen at the moment. Hopefully it wasn't anything too important.
She did manage to tune back in when Mulan-sensei was starting to wind down, though. "And remember," her final point was. "You'll all be doing this at the same time! You'll lose a lot of points for fighting with each other, but there's no penalty for collaborating. It's encouraged, even. Now, go!" Mulan-sensei blew her whistle, causing most of the class to run to the ruined city. Yukino was among that crowd, though she was towards the back of the group because she couldn't really get that far into the crowd without getting trampled. The group quickly thinned out, thankfully, as people split off, either to go down side streets, climb up the buildings, or take to the skies. She looked around, trying to spot any of the fake civilians.
There! A vaguely-humanoid figure roughly hewn from what appeared to be stone, trapped under what appeared to be a streetlight made from dirt. They... probably didn't say anything about property damage, right? Typically in a situation where things were already this destroyed nobody really cared if heroes had to break a few more things to save someone's life. Yukino quickly tapped the 'streetlight' on both sides of the fake civilian, using Cryokinesis to freeze two segments and then cleave them apart to free it up. She lifted the cut segment off of the civilian, then concentrated on her Quirk. She'd had an idea for a special move, or at least a new usage of Cryomancy if it didn't exactly count as a special move... She chilled the air around her a by few degrees, extending the effect out in a pulse. Yukino could, if only for a moment, feel anything that she was chilling even if she didn't freeze it below zero. It was a little murky, but she could tell differences between things by temperature and texture. It'd have been a bit easier to detect the civilians if they were warm bodies and not made of cold stone, but at least it was something.
The reason why she'd found a civilian first, though, was because she wanted to have an example of what she knew the civilian might feel like to compare the surroundings to. And using the special move produced... mixed results, honestly. For one, it took a small bite out of her body heat, but she was expecting that. She felt like her sense might've gotten a bit too spread out towards the end, which was hopefully something she could work on, but she did notice two more civilians in a nearby building. The door was blocked by a bit of dirt building, but that really wasn't much of a hindrance to a telekinetic as potent as she. Yukino patted the ground next to her civilian, using her Quirk. "Hang in there a bit," she said despite the fact that it was an honestly creepy-looking rock and not even anything resembling a person. Then she walked up to the door, brushing off the rubble with her Quirk.
Yukino quickly froze the ground under the two civilians inside the building, thankfully not obstructed aside from the rubble over the door. She carefully lifted all three civilians on the impromptu telekinetic stretchers she made from the ground under them, then walked out the building. She walked out of the dirtban area, the three civilians in tow. Yukino noticed Boron down the street carefully carrying two civilian stones in the same direction she was going. "Hey, Boron," she said, waving.
"Hey," he said, though he was still concentrating more on trying not to drop the heavy stones.
Yukino, because she wasn't really burdened as much by her charges thanks to her telekinesis, reached the area where everyone seemed to be dropping off their civilians. She gently set them down, still on their platforms, and nodded to Mulan-sensei. She jogged back to the cityscape, slowing down a bit when she passed by Boron. "Trade ya when you get back," she said, then sped back up again. She walked around the city, not using her sensory skill again but just checking under rubble when she saw a spot where a civilian might be hidden. She'd managed to find one civilian that way by the time Boron found her.
"You said you wanted to trade?" he asked.
Yukino nodded. "I chill you off, you warm me up. Also, I have something I wanna try, if you'll warm me up again when I'm done."
He smiled and summoned some fire. "Sure, let's do it!"
After Yukino cooled him down and ate his fire in return, Yukino tried her idea. She sent a pulse of cold off in one directing, hoping that narrowing it down would let her sense a bit more. It was a success, so she, with Boron's help, sent pulses off in three other directions, turning roughly ninety degrees each time. She had a pretty good idea of where all the civilians nearby were, at least for the moment, so...
"There are some civilians that way," Yukino said, pointing. It was true, of course, but there were a few more in another direction that Yukino planned on taking. "Of course, I can't guarantee our classmates won't scoop them up." With that said, she went after the civilians that she'd felt.
After... maybe an hour or two of the exercise, Yukino saw two people in suits talking to Mulan-sensei and some other teachers as she brought some more civilians out.
"What are you two doing here?" Mulan-sensei asked, looking somewhat miffed.
"We're here about the outstanding debt of Chikyu Tane," one of the suited men said.
When she heard that, something inside Yukino just... snapped. She faintly heard the civilians she was carrying thud to the ground, but she didn't care at that point.
It made... a disturbing amount of sense. But still, learning that Chikyu-’sensei’ apparently got into debt making a shitty-ass seventh-tier dirt school that couldn't properly care for its students? It was all Yukino could do to keep from exploding then and there, instead gritting her teeth and seething at the situation until one of the teachers, she didn't notice who, gently ushered her back to the dorms.
When she was back at the dorms she immediately walked to her room, slamming the door open, and stormed over to her belongings. She immediately grabbed her scratching block, which she usually kept somewhere easily accessible in case of a situation like this where something (or someone) caused her emotions to spike severely. She sat down and growled to herself as she started furiously ripping into it. She tried to take deep breaths to calm herself down, but it ended up shallow and not helping at all.
"Are you okay?" a quiet, nervous voice asked. Yukino jumped to see Yuu-chan standing at the doorway.
She was about to shout at him, but sighed. He didn't deserve it. "I'm... really angry," Yukino spat out. She snarled. "It's... by itself it's petty, but this is just the latest in a string of issues I've had with this damn school. And to be honest? I'm fucking out. Bye." Yukino got up, still scratching at her block. She walked to the door, letting Yuu-chan get out of her way first. "And... for what it's worth," Yukino stopped to say before she left, "you and the other friends I made here... are pretty much the only good thing I got out of this school. I'd like to keep in touch, if that's cool with you."
"Yeah," he said, though he still sounded a little somber. "I'd like that..."
"Thanks." Yukino left, searching for a teacher. She quickly found Goudalone-sensei, trying to calm down some students.
"I-I'm sure Laccadaisy will get back soon!" they said.
That statement hit Yukino hard. Chikyu wasn't even fucking there? Goudalone-sensei probably was trying to keep the students from getting riled up, but all it did was anger Yukino further. "Who do I have to talk to to leave?" Yukino shouted at them.
"A-ah! Takeda-chan!" they winced. They got really nervous when they saw her, and the students they were talking to backed away a bit. "Um... We'd prefer that you didn't leave the island at this time..."
"Not what I meant," Yukino growled, clenching her fists. "I want out of Taiyuu. I was trying to be patient, but whatever's going on now is the last straw!"
"U-um..." they trembled a bit under Yukino's fury. "Y-you'd have to talk to Buckskin about that, but he's... looking for Laccadaisy with Ryujin at the moment... They're... probably on the mainland."
Yukino's hands shook. A few wisps of white vapor rolled off of her as she tried to keep herself from lashing out. "Okay then," she said coldly. "But I'm leaving. Now. I'll contact... Kazumi-sensei about that later." She stormed off, pulling out her phone and opening her contacts. She tapped one of the first contacts, pressing the 'call' button. She went to an area with no people, trying to get some privacy.
"Yuki-chan! What's up!" Nii-chan picked up almost immediately.
Yukino sighed, trying to compose herself.
Nii-chan picked up on her silence. "This isn't an 'I love my brother so much and wanted to talk to him' call, is it?"
"No," Yukino muttered, unamused.
He sighed. "Okay, you here to vent or do you want my help with something?"
"I'm leaving," Yukino told him. "I don't care if you don't want me to, I don't care if you aren't there when I get off the train, hell, if the train isn't available I don't care if I have to use my Quirk to leave!"
"Okay," Nii-chan said. "Wow. Did... did something illegal happen?"
Yukino snorted, a bit of white vapor puffing from her nose. "Supposedly not, but at this point I wouldn't be surprised at all."
"Yeah, you sounded pretty... serious. Okay, luckily my shift just ended, so I'll try to be there to pick you up. If I'm not there when you get off, please wait until I arrive. And if you can't take the train, call me. I should be able to arrange something a little less... technically illegal."
"Thanks, Nii-chan," Yukino muttered.
"Love you, kiddo. Be there as soon as I can!" *Click.*
Yukino put her phone away and headed for her room.

Yukino hefted her backpack. She'd put some of her clothes, electronics, toiletries, and valuables in her bag but unfortunately had to leave most of it behind for when she could get it later. Luckily Yuu-chan was still in their room, so Yukino apologized for everything and asked him to make sure nothing happened to her stuff until she came back. With that taken care of, she was heading out. But before she could get to the door, she heard a calm voice.
"You're leaving, Takeda-kun," Akai-chan remarked. It wasn't really a question.
"Yeah," Yukino said. "I just... can't take this shit anymore." She'd already vented to Akai-chan about how she'd been having a lot of doubts about Taiyuu, and how she was considering leaving even before this most recent incident.
The much taller girl nodded. "Would you want me to leave with you?" Yukino noticed that she also had her backpack.
"That... that sounds great, but only if it's what you really want..."
"Of course," she said. "I imagine the incident with the debt collectors is what set you off? It does seem very suspect."
Yukino gave her a small, nervous smile. "Let's go, then."
The coupl- pair left the dorm building together, heading for the trains. Luckily, the train was there and it seemed like it was running. Akai-chan spoke to the operators for Yukino while she texted her brother to let him know that the train was running and she was coming with a friend. The operators agreed to take the two back to the mainland after they were assured that there was an adult back there waiting for them. Apparently the operators were going to pick someone on the mainland up anyways, which certainly helped. Yukino and Akai-chan took their seats on the otherwise-empty train, sitting next to each other near the front with their bags in the seats next to them. Yukino leaned on Akai-chan as the train started. She sniffled and rubbed at her eye. Akai-chan put an arm around her.

Yukino and Akai-chan got off the train as soon as the doors open. When they did, they saw Jailong-sensei about to enter the train.
"Hey," Yukino said coldly.
"Ah, hello, kids," Jailong-sensei said nervously. "I... can guess why you're here."
"Sure, it could be the fact that our 'beloved' principal up and ditched us to dodge the debt collectors," Yukino shrugged. "That was pretty upsetting, but are you sure it isn't the severely cheap and often times literally made from dirt facilities that reek of the sort of budget you can't run a school on? Or perhaps it's the understaffing issues that made it hard to get a proper education? Or maybe, just maybe it was the fact that the girl with the 'uncontrollable'" (Yukino made sure to use her snarkiest air quotes when she said 'uncontrollable') "memory-erasing Quirk was allowed to just erase everyone's memories for a few months with no question or even making the students aware that there was such a student at all? Ooh, or maybe it was all of the shitty things above!" Okay sure, it might've been a little harsh to dump all that on Jailong-sensei, but Yukino was feeling petty at the moment.
Jailong-sensei sighed, looking a little weighed down by the contents of Yukino's rant. "...I can concede most of what you just said, but not your problems with Kayaki."
Yukino snarled. Whatever guilt she had over venting at Jailong-sensei suddenly evaporated. "What the fuck are you on about?"
"It's... it's classified," Jailong-sensei said.
"Oh?" Yukino asked. "Classified? How can I be sure you're not just covering up for her?"
Jailong clenched her fists. "There wasn't a good solution to her problem that wouldn't have negatively affected Kayaki's education."
Yukino cocked her head at the 'teacher.' "So letting her negatively affect everyone else's education was totally fine, then? And to be honest I can think of a few solutions that would've probably only made her a little uncomfortable, as opposed to your amazingly brilliant solution of 'ignore it even though it's probably gonna make over half the school even more uncomfortable than Zuruko would be if we just did literally anything about it.' Did you even try to think of a solution? No Quirk is omnipotent, there had to have been a better way!"
"Quirks can be unpredictable," Jailong deflected. "We couldn't have been sure anything would work..."
Yukino scoffed and crossed her arms. Did she even realize what she was saying? "There are so many holes in that argument I almost mistook it for a thin slice of Swiss cheese. Oh, no, sorry, excuse would be a better word for it. Doing anything is better than nothing, you know. And most Quirks aren't nearly that unpredictable. You're an outlier, you know that, right? Most Quirks aren't sentient beings, just supernatural biological functions and stuff like that. They're not so unpredictable that they can't be dealt with, or that trying isn't worth it!" Yukino uncrossed her arms and jabbed a clawed finger at Jailong. She could feel herself start to heat up, white wisps curling off of her. "Though to be honest from how you talk about your dragons I wouldn't be surprised if you don't think they're alive! You know what your problem is!? You pretend that your Quirk is a thing when it's LIVING BEINGS! ZURUKO HID BEHIND AN ACTUAL THING AND PRETENDED IT WAS THIS BIIIG SCARY MONSTER SO SHE DIDNT HAVE TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE MEMORIES IT ATE! YOU KNOW WHAT'S NOT UNPREDICTABLE, THOUGH!? KEEP THE HURTY FIELD AWAY FROM PEOPLE AND IT'LL STOP HURTING THEM!! FUCKING!! MAGIC!!!" She let all the hurt, anger, and pain she'd been feeling over this pour into her words.
Jailong scoffed. "You think we should've kept Kayaki isolated? I didn't have a lot of records to work with, but I do know that her Quirk only affects memories of herself and blurs her into the background. I fail to see how that's worth that amount of vitriol, and you clearly disliked her to begin with." Seeing Yukino's glare, for whatever reason, not get any better from being told that her feelings weren't valid and that she was overreacting, Jailong sighed, her face softening. "No, I shouldn't accuse you of anything. But you should know that I did what I could, and I wasn't dealing with just her. Taiyuu was barely equipped to handle a class of completely normal people, and you and I both know that hero schools don't attract just normal people. To say I'm embarrassed by how poorly this went all down would be putting it lightly."
Yukino snarled, starting to see red. Not even a fucking apology. Jailong belittled her feelings, made excuses for her own shoddy work, and didn't even fucking apologize. And now she was making out that she was the one that was hurt by this. A lot of thoughts ran through Yukino's head, none of them polite. "You really think that makes it okay?" "Don't condescend me you fucking prick!" "You covered up for a fucking villain, don't act like I'm the asshole here!" "You're a villain, not a hero!" "Shut the hell up!" "Die, die, die, die die die diediediediediedie!"
Yukino felt someone grab her now-cold shoulder. She looked up at Akai-chan, her breath ragged. Akai-chan... didn't really smile or anything, but she gave her a look of sympathy. Yukino got her breathing back under control, then rubbed at her face with her sleeve. She glared at Jailong, but kept her tone cold. "It's... I can't believe you're looking down on me, when you're the one who didn't do anything when I was panicking over the holes that kept popping up in my memory." She shoved her hands in her pockets, partially to keep them from shaking. "But whatever helps your negligent ass sleep at night, hero." She spat out that last word with so much venom that she was honestly surprised that Jailong didn't die on the spot. If there was one thing she could think of Jailong as at the moment, 'hero' definitely wasn't it. She started to walk past Jailong, Akai-chan right by her side, but stopped when they were behind Jailong.
"Oh, and for the record," Yukino said, feeling like throwing one last barb in, petty as it was. "I hate just about everyone who spends months letting their mind-altering quirk permanently erase my memories about equally, regardless of how well they can directly control their Quirk. It's concerning that you, the pro 'hero' here, don't see what the big deal is. Though at least I know where Zuruko must've learned that self-centered attitude about how I'm not allowed to be angry about my memories of her vanishing, now." She smiled sardonically. "But hey, I guess you probably don't care about what a 'quirk effect' like myself might be feeling. Goodbye."
Jailong didn't have anything to say to that. Good. Before Yukino could start walking again, though, she heard a sound like a firecracker popping. "Hey!" A voice... was that Mushu-chan? He sounded angry, in any case. "You don't know anything about what she's like!"
Yukino snorted. "Ain't that the fuckin' truth. Good to know you've got your 'user's' back despite her repeatedly calling you a 'thing,' I guess." She started walking to the exit of the underground boarding area for the train.
"You kno-" Mushu-chan started to shout, but stopped.
Yukino turned back to see Jailong holding her hand up, probably having stopped Mushu-chan's rant with a silent command. "It's not worth it, Firecracker."
"Yeah," Yukino said flatly. "You've got a train to catch and our ride's probably here by now. I'd say this was a nice talk but, well, I don't wanna lie." Yukino was very tempted to say 'unlike you,' but she was probably pushing it already... She started walking to the exit again. Jailong didn't try to dig herself any deeper, she just sighed and got on the train. Yukino walked up the stairs to the exit, seeing her brother's car when she got to ground-level.
Nii-chan got out of the car, a worried expression on his face. It looked like he hadn't even taken time to change because he was still in his hero outfit. "Yuki-chan, are you okay?" He ran up to Yukino, sweeping her up in a hug. "I'm so sorry, Yuki-chan. I don't know what you've been dealing with, but..."
Yukino hugged him back, hard. It was like a dam burst and she couldn't hold back the tears anymore. She buried her head in her brother's chest, sobbing.

The next couple minutes were a bit of a blur to Yukino. She vaguely recalled being gently led somewhere, Nii-chan and Akai-chan talking about something. But she spent most of that time crying into Nii-chan's costume.
Eventually Yukino calmed down a bit... or maybe just ran out of tears. At some point Nii-chan had taken her to a nearby bench and sat her down. Yukino rubbed her now-wet face off on her sleeve. The tears on her sleeve turned to frost almost immediately. For whatever reason, despite the fact that Cryomancy wasn't technically an ice-based Quirk, her tears were cold and would freeze onto anything other than her. Apparently her grandmother, who had an actual ice Quirk, had the same effect. Even though she was only reminded of it when crying, knowing that she had a similarity like that with her grandmother tended to make Yukino feel... pleasant, at least a little.
Speaking of... Yukino looked at the surface she'd been crying into. Flame-retardant fabric with a scale-like design, covered in frost and, at some parts, outright ice. "Ah, s-sorry," Yukino muttered to her brother.
He gave her a smile, squeezing her back a bit before letting her go from his hug. "It's okay. My costume is made to give me a bit of resistance to cold, remember? While I'm thawing my shirt out, though, do you need some fire?"
Yukino nodded. "Yeah, I might need a recharge..."
Nii-chan took a breath, conjuring fire from his hands. He held one of his flame-wreathed palms over his icy shirt, melting and evaporating the ice, and held the other out to Yukino. Yukino held her hands over the fire, sucking the familiar-tasting heat from it. Nii-chan didn't say anything as she ate her fill of his Dragon Fire, and when his shirt was dried off he let the hand on his chest fall wordlessly, still keeping the fire he was feeding to Yukino up.
"Done," Yukino said when she had her fill, pulling her hands away. "Thanks."
Nii-chan let his fire go out, a slight hitch in his breathing. "I'm... sorry, by the way," he said after a while.
"For what?" Yukino asked.
"This whole thing is kind of my fault..."
"It's literally not, but go on," Yukino said flatly.
"Yeah, but..." He sighed. "I mean, yeah, I didn't cause... whatever happened there, but... you turned down UA because I was a jerk to you all that time ago."
Yukino snorted. "I turned down UA because I overreacted to you giving me valid criticism and decided to do something stupid."
Nii-chan put his hand on her shoulder. "It was criticism, but in hindsight I wouldn't call it valid. I was too harsh on you, and I ended up pushing you away..."
Yukino shrugged, though she didn't shake his hand off. "I still probably should've..." She sighed. "Let's just say we both did something stupid."
He chuckled and ruffled her hair. Yukino pulled away a bit, but grinned. "Yeah, I guess if we're both in agreement..." He looked over Yukino's shoulder. "Hey, kiddo!" Yukino turned to see Akai-chan standing around awkwardly a bit away. "I still want you to call a parent or guardian before I take you anywhere, but once you do that we can get lunch, my treat!"
"I'll need to borrow on of your phones," Akai-chan said. "My Quirk interferes with electronics, so my phone is only for emergencies and usually uncharged."
Ryuji's brow furrowed. "There's really nothi-" He stopped, looked at Yukino, then sighed. "No, no, it's your Quirk," he muttered, "you probably know best... Okay, Yuki-chan, can you give her your phone? I wanna call our parents so they know you're alright." He pulled out his phone.
"Yeah," Yukino nodded. "Though... I don't know if I'm ready to talk with Mom and Dad yet... Honestly I only called you because I needed your help..."
Nii-chan nodded understandingly. "Yeah, I get it. I still have to talk to them, but I'll explain that to them. I'll go call them in my car, give you two some privacy." He did as he said, getting inside his car and calling someone on his phone.
Yukino pulled out her phone. "I can go somewhere else, if you want some privacy," she offered.
"It's okay," Akai-chan said. "Could you please dial the number in and hold the phone for me? I would prefer not to destroy your phone."
"Yeah, that's cool. Gimme the number."
Yukino dialed in the number Akai-chan gave her, then put the phone on speaker for her. It sounded like it was her grandmother who picked up. Akai-chan told her that she'd left the school, and how it was probably not going to be a school much longer. Akai-obaachan asked how Akai-chan's stepsibling was (still on the island and apparently better off that way, which concerned Yukino...) and then suggested she start looking for another school. Then she asked where Akai-chan was and said she couldn't pick her up.
"I'm with... a friend and her older brother right now," Akai-chan answered.
"A friend?" Akai-obaachan asked, clearly interested in what Akai-chan would say next by her tone of voice.
"...Yes," Akai-chan answered.
"Is she the short blue girl with ice powers that you like a lot?"
Akai-chan's ears turned a little red. "...Yes," she muttered.
"And her brother is a pro hero, right? He should be trustworthy. You may stay with them for a while, but please go either here or your home by nightfall."
"Okay, Obaachan," she agreed. "See you soon."
"Bye, Sei-tan," Akai-obaachan said. "I'll tell your mother about this for you." She hung up.
Yukino smirked at her. Akai-chan, probably realizing what that smirk meant, blushed slightly harder in anticipation. "So I'm the short blue girl that you like a lot, huh?" She turned off her phone and put it back in her pocket.
Akai-chan gave a small nod. "That's right."
Yukino smiled at her. "I'm flattered."
"You're... you're welcome, I guess."
Nii-chan got out of his car, stopping Yukino from pressing Akai-chan any further. Probably for the best. "You guys done? I can take your orders if you want!"
"We are, thank you," Akai-chan said.
"Thanks for this, by the way," Yukino said as she sat down on the bench. They'd gone to Dad's family restaurant for the food, as Yukino thought, but Nii-chan had made it a takeout order and taken them to the park nearby instead of going inside to eat. Yukino had stayed in the car, but Nii-chan relayed the well-wishes of Dad and the employees she was closest with.
"No problem, kiddo," Ryuji said with a grin. He handed out the containers to Yukino and Akai-chan, then opened his. "Smells so good..." he said after giving it a sniff.
Yukino and Akai-chan opened their food, too. Nii-chan and Yukino both ordered the Da'long Katsukare, a special dish that they both liked a lot, and Akai-chan ordered it too because she liked spicy food anyway and didn't have as much of the menu memorized as the siblings.
"It tastes delicious," Akai-chan said after taking a few bites. It was, as the name suggested, a katsukare dish with the tonkatsu shaped and decorated to look vaguely like a dragon. It was also very spicy, as Nii-chan had warned Akai-chan before relaying her order to the restaurant. "Though if I may ask, was it named after Takeda-san's hero name?"
Nii-chan smiled at Yukino. "Really, Yuki-chan?" he asked, his voice dripping with exaggerated joy. "Your girlfriend already knows my hero name?"
Akai-chan's cheeks turned a very adorable shade of red at that comment. "Ah, uh..." she stammered out.
Yukino snorted. "Yeah, that's right Akai-chan," she said. "When Nii-chan chose his hero name, Dad decided to name a dish after him in support."
"And he naturally picked katsukare," Nii-chan added, "because it's kinda one of my favorite foods." He ate some of the curry-covered pork, then sighed in delight. A small, deliberately dragon-shaped puff of fire escaped from his lips when he exhaled. "Plus, it's so spicy that it makes you feel like you're breathing fire, like my Quirk."
"That... sounds nice," Akai-chan said.
Yukino grinned. "And when I finally debut, though unfortunately it seems like it's gonna be a while still, Dad's gonna name something after me."
Nii-chan chuckled. "Yeah, can't wait to see that, huh?"
"I'd love to see it," Akai-chan said.
"Thanks, Akai-chan." Yukino smiled and leaned on Akai-chan's side. "So are you gonna try to get into another hero school after this?" Yukino asked. "I'm planning to try to transfer into UA. Nii-chan's been looking into how to do that for me and could probably help you, if you want to as well."
Ryuji faux-pouted. "Don't volunteer my help without asking, Yuki-chan..."
"Love you too, Nii-chan," Yukino smirked at him.
"Thank you for the offer," Akai-chan said, "but I think I'm going to go into medical school after this, not resume the hero course."
"Oh that's cool," Yukino said.
"Med school is certainly a great goal," Nii-chan agreed. "People tend to glorify pro heroes, but doctors save lives too."
"Thank you," Akai-chan said. "For what you just said, and for the lunch as well."
Nii-chan gave her a smile. "You're welcome! It was nice meeting Yuki-chan's... friend."
He didn't say 'girlfriend,' but Akai-chan still blushed again.
"That's enough teasing, Nii-chan," Yukino said. "Let's eat before our food gets cold, huh?"
"Ah, right," Akai-chan muttered. She quickly took a large bite of her katsukare, probably to give herself an excuse to not engage in the conversation. Yukino smiled and had some katsukare as well.
"Aah~" Nii-chan sighed once they were all done with their food. "That was delicious~"
"Yeah~" Yukino agreed with a smile. She was feeling a lot better after some good food.
"It was good," Akai-chan said, putting her container down.
"So what are we doing now?" Yukino asked.
"We can do something else in a bit, but for now..." Nii-chan pulled another container out of the bag that the katsukare was in and handed it to Yukino. "Sorry if this... probably isn't the best time for it, but Dad and I both thought you might like a little pick-me-up."
Yukino quietly opened the container, revealing... "Is that a meringue?" Yukino asked. It looked like a lightly browned meringue, shaped into a scale pattern somehow.
"Take a bite," Nii-chan said, handing her a spoon.
Yukino took a spoonful of the dessert, revealing ice cream and a brownie under it. A warm feeling spread in her chest. "Oh, it's a baked Alaska," she realized. Her father had made her and Nii-chan the hot-and-cold dessert a few times when they were younger (once he even enlisted Mom's help and Quirk to make it right in front of them). Yukino chuckled. "Haven't had this in a while... What's he calling it? Baked Kuraokami?"
Nii-chan shrugged. "He hasn't told me the name yet, but he's been preparing to add it to the menu since you told us your hero name."
Yukino smiled, taking another spoonful. The meringue and brownie were only a little warm and the ice cream was starting to melt from the wait, but it still tasted delicious. A cold, but not sad, tear came from her eye. She quickly wiped it off, making sure it didn't get in her ice cream. "It's good," she said once she swallowed it. "Remind me to thank Dad."
Nii-chan smiled. "I will."

a part two to this maybe? dk, again this is unedited and i’m trying my hand at a more flowery language. hopefully it isn’t too flowery lolol.
the cultural terms are further explained at the bottom.
Envy, with its tendrils green with jealousy, wraps itself snug around our little beating heart. Yet we continue to let it consume us, basking and boasting in the covetous desires. And again, do we have the capacity to ingest the wants of the human soul?
“They’re so pretty!”
Cherry blossom petals frolicked to the lilt of the wind in merry pink blushes, kissing the tips of her fingers. They slipped by cheekily, never getting caught, leaving only the tickle of velvet left as the aftertaste. Hsien-Chen sighed. It was the first spring since they moved to the capital; the flowers here are different from the ones in the countryside.
Her little sister ran ahead, giggling in glee. Two small buns sat atop her head, thin hair pulled tightly in a clean, smooth updo. The smile stretching across her face was far wider than any of Hsien-Chen’s when she was that age—not that she could remember ever being this carefree. After one fateful meeting with a messenger of Death ( her mother sobbed over her for days, thanking the Heavens and Yánluówáng for being merciful and not taking her daughter away), Hsien-Chen became a silent child.
According to Mama, she’d met Heibai Wuchang, more specifically the white counterpart of the duo; Xiè Bì'ān, the White Guard.
“No, you’re mistaken,” Her mother had shaken her head, frowning at Hsien-Chen’s recounting of the event. “That’s not a woman, and you’re lucky you didn’t meet Fàn Wújiù instead.”
Was she supposed to be grateful? Grateful that the White Guard, Xie, had taught her to make amends and become a better version of whoever she was going to grow up as?
She should be thankful for an opportunity many hadn't had the chance to get.
But why is it still so difficult to be angelic?
Round and round it goes, slippery and thick—soft as the finest silk in China, lithe as the strings of guzheng. Round and round envy goes, around the souls of men. Do we not notice it, or do we take no notice of it?
Hsien-Chen swallowed a lump of saliva lodging in the ridges of her throat. Her hands shook, palms sticky with sweat. Tucking the piece of parchment into the elaborated pieces of her robes, she hurried across the study room, sock-covered feet making no noise against the smooth wooden paneling.
She couldn’t believe she was going to cheat.
On a national exam, no less.
Pinpricks of moisture dotted her forehead, satin clothes sticking to her underarms. Hsien-Chen shook her head firmly.
No, it’s not her fault she’s always second to that Luo family’s brat. They are better off than her parents, providing him with more possibilities and renowned tutors when she only had herself to depend on. Was it wrong to sneak in answers she already read through? It was merely referencing.
Tighter and tighter, over the limbs and minds. Tighter and tighter envy’s fingers gripped our souls, dragging down, down, down. Tight was the constraints, yet our eyes were still clouded with discontent.
“Did you hear? The daughter of the Wang family had four wedding proposals today! One of them is a son of a businessman.” Hsien-Chen’s companion exhaled dreamily. “She’s beautiful, it’s no wonder!”
Hsien-Chen snorted, wringing her arm out of her friend’s hold.
“She’s your neighbour, isn’t she? The Wangs’ young miss.” Her friend asked. An innocent question that made her blood boil to a degree she never knew was possible.
Oh, how Hsien-Chen hated that girl next door. Always adorned with bracelets, necklaces. On her dainty feet always a pair of expensive embroidered shoes, no less than a noblewoman’s. And as if her being spoiled wasn’t enough, the girl was born with such elegant features, big brown eyes, small upturned nose with pink lips.
Oh, how Hsien-Chen hated her. They’re the same age, but Wang Jing appeared to be on a whole other level. And she knew, no matter how hard she tries, she’ll never reach that league. Her chest tightened, breaths coming in short angry heaves.
“She’s fooling around with their gardener’s son.” Hsien-Chen blurted without thinking. Whether it was true or not was up to the discernment of those who heard.
“What?”  A handkerchief covered her friend’s face, widened eyes barely containing the disgust and excitement at the unexpected news. “That’s so wrong! Such a disgrace. Don’t you think people should know about this?”
Hsien-Chen shrugged. “Do what you will.”
Deeper and deeper envy hauls men, smooth and gracious through the waves. Deeper and deeper our beings go, into the sea of envy’s poison. Can we swim, or are we nonchalant with our foreboding demise?
“I wish I never had you!” Hsien-Chen screamed, clutching her head. Hysterics enveloped her, lashing out at the crying boy. Her son. Her older daughter held him protectively, hand rubbing furiously at her tear-streaked face.
A raised hand. A sharp smack. The boy wailed, clutching his red face.
“Mama, stop!”
“You too! I hope you die along with your good-for-nothing father!”
The vase broke, shards flying as Hsien-Chen swept more decorations off the shelves. Her children cried louder and louder and—
“Stop crying! I’m leaving. I’m leaving! I deserve better than this life!”
The slam of the door silenced the young ones for a moment and Hsien-Chen could feel the cogs of her brain turning again. Children were noisy, or her children were noisy. Lan’s kids were docile beings, same goes for Yi’s twin boys. Filial, gentle souls, unlike hers.
How she despised her children, her simpleton husband.
How she despised her life.
The back room was serene enough for her to collect her thoughts, a tired groan escaping her chapped lips as she sank down to the dusty floor.
Despair. That was the word for what she was feeling.
Despair, resentment, bitterness.
Envy.
“I’m better off dead.”
“Sure you are.”
“Who are you?” She whipped around in shock, clutching her heart. In front of her was a man, young and tall. He had an air of masculine handsomeness, the kind you normally feel around young warriors or generals. An austere smile danced on his thin lips, bulging biceps placing down a heavy-looking mirror in front of her.
“Who are you?” She repeated.
“I believe a mirror was supposed to be delivered here.”
“I believe not.” Hsien-Chen crossed her arms, shooting him her best scowl.
“Are you sure?”
He pulled the cloth off, and the mirror. The mirror was…
The mirror was the exact same one. The one she saw in the storeroom of the old couple her mother worked for. The same mirror Xiè Bì'ān showed her future.
“No,” Hsien-Chen shuddered, backing away from him. “Is this a joke to you?”
“You’ve met my partner, I believe. Xiè Bì'ān.” The man was grim, unsmiling. “I too should believe you know who I am.”
“Fàn Wújiù?” It came out a frightened squeak, quivering with dense fear.
“My partner has a kind soul. Me? Not so much.” The Black Guard of the Heibai Wuchang muttered. “He did warn you many years ago. That was your chance.”
Hsien-Chen fell to her knees. “But my family…”
He laughed scornfully. “Weren’t you wishing they were dead a few minutes ago?”
“Please sir! Please just—,” Hsien-Chen felt tongue-tied. What was she even begging for? A second shot at life? She already knew an opportunity like that, an opportunity many hadn’t had a chance to get would be better off not given to her.
She’d already wasted the first one.
“Is your- is your friend here?”
The Black Guard was stern, but nodded. “Outside.”
And true enough, the White Guard was standing there, hands behind his back. He had seemed like a woman to five-year-old Hsien-Chen, but now, she saw clearly he was a man. Albeit slender with delicate features, his elegant stance was somber once he spotted her.
Hsien-Chen was mildly surprised that he was taller than the other guard.
“It’s your time now child.”
“I know.” Hsien-Chen wrung her hands nervously. “I think I just want to say I’m sorry.”
“For?”
“For wasting your time. You could’ve gone to another child. Maybe they’d listen to you.”
Xiè Bì'ān brushed back his hair. “It was fate. There’s nothing to be done now. Don’t fret.”
Her lips parted, then she closed it again. She could see Manchurian cranes against the orange-daubed skies, fishermen’s songs loud enough for her to hear.
Her husband must be coming home any moment now.
“What would I be if I had listened to you then?” She turned to face the white-clad man, but he refused to answer.
“You have to come now.”
“I guess we are arresting you right now.” Fàn Wújiù nodded to his partner.
Hsien-Chen stretched out her hand, hoping to feel the plush texture of the cherry blossom once more.
“I guess this is it.”
So indeed, the waves roll, swallowing the cries of regret and frantic yelps of realisation. For it is too late if we notice at the brink of death, now may we rest well in the icy comfort of envy’s clasp.
first off, this story takes place during the qing dynasty, after the imperial examinations were passed for women.
i'm personally not taoist, but had derived lots of taoist myths as inspiration! partly bc i'd grown up listening to these stories (: i hope you learn a thing or two about Chinese culture, though my version in this story is definitely tweaked.
Heibai Wuchang is "Black and White Impermanence" literally, and are deities in Chinese folk religion that escorts souls to the underworld. grim reaper, if you may. the white counterpart is Xie Bi'an while the black counterpart is Fan Wujiu.
as for Yánluówáng, he's the king of the taoist underworld. the mirror that is referenced in my previous story, Mirror of Retribution is a mirror used by the Yánluówáng to judge dead souls when dealing out punishments.

the one with the ex boyfriend. [donghyuck]
summary: you and your ex boyfriend, Donghyuck, take part in a video interview surrounding your past relationship.
inspired by ‘the exes confronting each other’ seventeen series by @skydivingstars
[ex boyfriend interview series masterlist] [main masterlist]
Tumblr media
[The video begins with a bare set. Both the wall and the ground are grey, save for the two black spinning stools in the middle of the screen, only a metre or two apart.]
[Two people walk in, from opposite sides of the screen, gently taking a seat on the stools. They recognise each other immediately, and both tense. One mumbles ‘what the fuck’ as they put their drink bottles down.]
[We’re currently doing a series on exes and past relationships. I believe your mutual friend asked you to do this? Okay. Well, we’ll just be asking a few questions. If at any time you feel uncomfortable, or if you just need need a break, just let us know. We can skip a question or edit a section out if you would like. Ready?]
Tumblr media
[Could you introduce yourselves and your relationship?]
[There’s silence for a moment.]
Donghyuck, clearing his throat: my name is Donghyuck. I dated Y/n a while ago. we don’t really have a relationship now.
[Y/n raises her eyebrows at the camera before speaking.]
Y/n: I’m Y/n. we dated, yeah.
Tumblr media
Y/n, mimicking Donghyuck: a WhILe AgO
[Donghyuck is almost irritated by the comment, but the right side of his mouth lifts up in a small smile. He covers it with his drink bottle.]
Tumblr media
[When did you meet?]
Y/n: sometime in high school.
Donghyuck: sophomore year, chemistry class.
[Y/n is surprised he remembers.]
Donghyuck, awkwardly, to Y/n: we had Mr Chen, remember? he made us partners.
[Y/n laughs, remembering.]
Y/n: god, I hated you back then.
Donghyuck, rolling his eyes: yeah, I know. I hated you, too.
[You hated each other? Why?]
Donghyuck, shrugging: because she hated me.
Y/n: you liar! you hated me, too. you always said I was annoying.
Donghyuck, jutting his chin out at her: why’d you hate me then?
Y/n: because you were brash and risky with the lab equipment. I had to do so much extra credit to boost my grades enough to pass half the experiments you ruined.
[It’s obvious that she now doesn’t care about this.]
Donghyuck, to the camera: oh, yeah, and she was always uptight about the experiments.
Y/n, exasperated: was I wrong in taking precautions with you?
Tumblr media
Donghyuck: we became sort of friends in junior year, though.
Y/n: we weren't friends.
Donghyuck, grinning: you didn’t hate me. I call that friendship.
Y/n: yeah, because I had the biggest crush on you in junior year.
Y/n, laughing: I had no interest in being your friend.
[Donghyuck is surprised and is about to ask another question.]
Tumblr media
[When did you realise you were interested in each other?]
Donghyuck, instantly: junior prom.
Y/n: I don’t know, to be honest.
Y/n, now giggling: I know I liked him during junior year but I think it was just me realising that I didn't hate him and really just liked him.
Tumblr media
Y/n, suddenly realising what Donghyuck said: wh- junior prom?
Donghyuck, slightly embarrassed: you were so excited to go. when I got there, you came over and greeted me so happily. it was so different to how you normally talked to me.
Donghyuck, teasing her: you know, with hatred and disgust.
Donghyuck, turning to look at the camera: didn’t help that she looked gorgeous, too.
[He shrugs in an easy-going way as if what he said was not a big deal.]
[Y/n’s mouth drops open in surprise. There’s silence as Y/n processes. Donghyuck looks down at his hands, the tips of his ears are red. He’s embarrassed he confessed that on camera.]
Tumblr media
[Why did you break up?]
[There’s an immediate change in the air. From what had been teasing fun, they’re both suddenly rigid in their seats, uncomfortable.]
Donghyuck: we just sort of-
Y/n: we changed.
Y/n, taking a deep breath: and we just weren’t compatible anymore.
[One side of Donghyuck’s mouth lifts up in a pitiful smile.]
Y/n: we started dating in high school. we were bound to be different people this year.
[You broke up this year?]
[Donghyuck laughs - in a huff - humourlessly]
Donghyuck, nodding: yeah, a couple months ago.
[Was it mutual?]
[Neither of them look at each other.]
Y/n: yeah.
Donghyuck: yeah.
[But you didn’t stay friends? Donghyuck said earlier that you no longer have a relationship.]
[They don’t look at the camera.]
Donghyuck: yeah, we don’t.
Y/n: the break up was mutual but it was... messy.
Donghyuck: prolonged.
Y/n: ...yeah
Tumblr media
[What did you love most about each other?]
[They think for a moment.]
Y/n: he kept me grounded.
[Donghyuck smirks.]
Y/n: when I was stressed - cause of senior year exams and such - he was there. he was a really good support system.
[Donghyuck plays with his hands, but it’s obvious her answer made him happy.]
Tumblr media
Donghyuck: she kept me grounded, too.
[Y/n pulls a face because he copied her answer. Donghyuck taps the stool between his legs mindlessly.]
Donghyuck: she wasn’t afraid to call me out, put me in my place. she challenged me in a way no one else did.
[zoom in on Donghyuck]
Donghyuck: it was... nice. only a little irritating.
[Y/n laughs off side, and the sound causes the corners of Donghyuck's mouth to lift a little more.]
Tumblr media
[What did you hate most about each other?]
Y/n: like, right before we broke up?
Donghyuck: no, senior year.
Y/n, laughing: oh, then, that's easy. donghyuck doesn’t get stressed, about anything.
Donghyuck: I get stressed!
Y/n, turning to cock her head at him: not about school. not then.
Y/n, turning back to the camera: it used to drive me up the wall. I'd be panicking about an upcoming exam and he’d be sitting there like ‘calm down. let’s go for a walk or something. clear your head.’
Donghyuck: first of all
[zoom in on Donghyuck]
Donghyuck: boyfriend of the year. second of all, I did stress. just not two months before the exam.
[Y/n sighs, considering that he might be right.]
Tumblr media
Donghyuck: I guess - okay, looking back, it’s kind of ridiculous.
Donghyuck: she prioritises her studies over everything.
Y/n: oh. yeah, that was the premise of a lot of our arguments.
Donghyuck, ignoring what she said, quickly defending himself: like I know it’s admirable and a good thing to prioritise. I know.
Donghyuck: it just bothered me because it felt like she never had time for me.
[Y/n nods, deep in thought, her hand raised to her face, a nail between her teeth.]
Tumblr media
[Would you say you were in love?]
[They look at each other. Neither wants to speak first.]
Y/n: ... no.
Donghyuck, huffing: ouch.
Y/n, turning to him: you think you were?
Donghyuck, quietly, eyes wide: I wanted to work through it.
Y/n: I- uh-
[She stops herself.]
Tumblr media
[Would you give it another shot?]
Y/n: we broke up recently. I don’t think it makes much sense to-
Donghyuck, swallowing loudly: yeah. agreed.
Tumblr media
Y/n, turning to him, sincere: I miss you a lot, you know.
Donghyuck, smiling slightly: I miss you, too.
Tumblr media
Y/n: can I change my answer?
[Donghyuck suddenly looks up at her.]
Tumblr media
[Okay, um, that’s it. Thank you for participating. It was very nice to have you guys on set today.]
[Both smile politely at the staff. Neither move.]
[You’re free to go, guys.]
Y/n: oh. right.
Donghyuck, swivelling on his stool to face her properly: how are you getting home?
Y/n, getting off her stool and picking up the bottle of water by her feet: im catching the bus. why?
Donghyuck, getting off his stool, too: I can, um, I can drive you. if you want.
Y/n, smiling: um, yeah. okay. thank you.
[The sound begins to fade as they leave.]
Y/n: do you still drive that crappy Toyota?
Donghyuck: Berty has a name and you know that.
Y/n: of course I know! I named-
[The sound cuts, and the screen fades to black.]

Warning: Mentions of blood, violence, etc
"This can't be... I-I can't be.." Hongjoong chokes out. He suddenly felt like he couldn't breath. Seonghwa quickly walks over to hold the smaller male. "Shh it's okay. It's okay. Calm down." He says in a soft tone. "I can't be a hybrid. No.. Hakjoon. I thought he was... my dad. W-why would mom hide my real father from me?" Hongjoong sobs out. Others look at their small mate as he cried. All Seonghwa could do was hug the smaller male and comfort him through words. After Hongjoong had calmed down a bit Mingi took the smaller from Seonghwa holding him close. "Is there... is there anything more?" Hongjoong asked sniffing. "The next pages are empty. I don't think your mom wrote anything more." Yeosang says. The remaining pages were blank.
"Why wasn't my own father there for me? Why did mom lied to me? Why?" Hongjoong asks to no one in particular. "There are no answers. But we can track down the witch Choi Haeju. If she is even alive that is." Jongho says sighing. "How do we even track her? It's not like we used to know her or something." San says frustrated ruffling his hair. "..Baekhyun hyung! Maybe he can help us." Mingi suggest. Hongjoong looks at him questioningly. "You are right. Baekhyun hyung is half witch. So he might know Choi Haeju or know someone who in turn knows Choi Haeju. Also we need to know about vampire wolf hybrids. Baekhyun hyung's help is what we need." Seonghwa said. "I will call them." Wooyoung offers as he goes away to call Baekhyun.
EXO pack house members comes shortly after they were informed that Hongjoong and others needed their help. They all sat on the living room. Some on the couch. Others on the floor as Seonghwa explained to everyone what had happened and what they have found out. Baekhyun was shocked. "But luna.. we never knew luna even had another mate." Baekhyun says his eyes wide. "How could she let anyone know... You know how it was between vampire and werewolves at that time." Sehun mumbles. Baekhyun sighs. "Finding the said witch is easy. But I am more worried about Hongjoong." Baekhyun says looking at Hongjoong with a concerned look. "Why?" Seonghwa asked. "You know how powerful half vampire and half wolf can be from all the stories you guys might have heard. But as it says. Most of the child dies at young age. Their fragile body unable to handle the power coursing through them." Baekhyun says taking a breath in.
"But they are more dangerous. Not just because of the powers. But also because being a mate of a vampire and werewolf hybrid means you get more power too. What I am trying to say is. When you all complete the mating process you all will become stronger than you already are. It is a blessing but it is also a curse. Years ago when a vampire wolf hybrid is born and if they were able to live until the age where they mature then people would fight. To have them as their. So that they can get the power which comes with being a vampire wolf hybrid's mate." Baekhyun says leaving everyone stunned. "The last known vampire wolf hybrid who was able to live till the day of maturation was from 200 years ago. He died after his mate died." Chanyeol says frowning. "Do you think someone knows? That I am half vampire..." Hongjoong asked nervous. "I don't think so. I mean even you didn't knew about yourself." Jongin says. "Unless. Someone managed to find out your mother had two mates. One of their being a vampire. And that you were the vampire's son." Kyungsoo says.
"Should I tell you about your father? Lee Seokjoon?" Minseok asked Hongjoong hesitantly. "You know about him?" The younger asked. "I don't know much to be honest. I only know that he is still alive. Till now. And it raises the question on why he never tried to find you. We can only know more when we find Choi Haeju." Minseok says sadly. "Hyung do you really think I have a vampire blood in me? It's just... I just never had any signs of me being half vampire." Hongjoong says frowning trying to think of anything weird. "I think your parents kept your vampire side surpressed. In order to keep your identity hidden." Chen answers. Hongjoong nods in understanding. "So let's start some investigation shall we." Suho says trying to lighten up the mood a bit. "I will go outside and call all my witch friends one by one and ask them about Choi Haeju. Chanyeol. Sehun follow me. You two are going to help." Baekhyun says as he goes out with Sehun and Chanyeol following behind. "Come on up with me Hongjoong. Let's have some private time." Kyungsoo says smiling. Hongjoong nods standing up helping the heavily pregnant male upstairs to his room while other stayed behind.
"Hmm they prepared your room so well." Kyungsoo hums impressed as he looks around the room. Hongjoong smiles. "Yeah they made sure everything were to my liking." He says. "Come on sit down." Kyungsoo says as he sat down on the bed patting on the space beside him. Hongjoong obeys sitting down beside the older. "What do you think about the boys till now?" Kyungsoo asked referring to Seonghwa and the other six alphas. "They are really nice. I am glad that I have them as my mates. They are everything I could ask for." Hongjoong says with a blush. "That they are. They are going to start wanting to mate you anytime now. But don't mate with them all at once. Mating bite is too hard to handle. And you can't get seven mating bites all at once. It will be too much for your body and for your wolf. So go for one at a time." Kyungsoo advices. Hongjoong nods.
Kyungsoo breathes out as he rubs his baby bump. "I swear I am never going to let Jongin touch me after this." He grumbled when he felt the baby kick hard. Hongjoong laughs at that. "What is pregnancy like?" He asks curious. "Both heaven and hell. Knowing that you are carrying a child. A symbol of the love between you and your mate. The feeling is amazing. Knowing that the child is your and your mate's blood. When I look at myself in the mirror I feel proud of myself. I feel happy knowing that me and mate have went through lots of hardship and thatnwe finally having a family of our own. It's heaven. But then it's hell. The pain that comes with pregnancy. The exhaustion. The mood swings. Yet all of these are going to be worth it at the end. I am excited to welcome our baby into this world." Kyungsoo says with a smile.
Hongjoong looks at the older and he feels the need to have a baby of himself. "I wish to be mother too." He mumbles. "You will be a great one that I am sure." Kyungsoo says. "Can I touch?" Hongjoong asked referring to the baby bump. "Oh yes of course." Kyungsoo said nodding. Hongjoong brought his hands up placing it on the baby bump. His eyes widening when he felt the baby kick right against his hands. "Woah so active. What's the gender?" He asks in wonder. "It's a girl." Kyungsoo says smiling. "She is going to be everyone's sweetheart." Hongjoong chuckles. "And stuck with a overprotective father who will scare away her mate." Kyungsoo says both of then bursting out laughing at the thought.
Suddenly the door opens and Baekhyun comes running inside. "I have found! Choi Haeju." he said, a victorious smile on his face as he showed them the address where Haeju was staying. Hongjoong didn't knew how to react. He was happy that they found her but also nervous to find out whatever he was going to find out about his parents and himself. 'I am going to face whatever it is. I have my alphas with me.' He thought to himself. Feeling better knowing that he was not going to be alone. "Let's go now. I want to talk to her today. Now." Hongjoong says. He was going to find out what had happened to his parents no matter what.

EXO Scenario College AU!: How You Meet Them.
Suho
It was orientation week. You were so excited to be able to be at _college of your choice_. You joined a tour group and you waited for the tour guide to arrive. You started talking to the girl next to you. You guys got so carried away that you didnt notice the tour guide arrived. "Uhm,hello everyone, sorry I'm late,I'm Junmyeon,I'll be your tour guide for today. Before we start let's get to know each other, I'm a senior and I'm majoring in Architecture." Before you new it,it was your turn to introduce yourself ,you were zoned out so you didn't notice everyone looking at you until you heard Junmyeon clear his throat. "Oh,sorry, I'm Y/N and I'm majoring in _major of your choice-" "Nice,to meet you Y/N,okay guys lets get on with the tour", Junmyeon said ,with a smile and a small wink that you couldn't believe was meant for you.
Xiumin
It was your first day and you over slept. "Late on your first day well done Y/N" you said sarcastically to yourself. You checked your phone and saw that you only had 7 minutes until your first class. You hopped into the shower and got dressed so quickly. After just managing to lock your door you sped all the way to your class, only to realise you forgot not only your textbook but your whole bag. "Well done Y/N,you're just on a roll today." You said out loud. You heard a small chuckle behind you. As you quickly turned on your heal to see who that chuckle belonged too,you were met with the most captivating brown eyes. "Sorry for laughing but I couldn't help myself,I'm Minseok" Maybe today wasn't going to be such a bad day after all.
Chen
You were studying musical arts. As an assignment your professor asked everyone to pick a partner .This assignment consisted of writing and producing a love song. You had a few friends in your class however as fate would have it,they all paired up together leaving you all alone. You were left all alone. As you looked around you say every one had a partner. As you were about to tell your professor, you felt a timid hand on your shoudler. "Hi,I'm Jongdae, you can be my partner."
On a side note,i am sooooooo happy for him😊 and i wish his wife and little bundle of joy nothing but love.
Baekhyun
You don't know why you were here. You should be in your dorm room studying for your exam for next week. But here you were, in some random frat party that your roomate dragged you to. You tried looking for her to let her know you wanted to leave, but she was M.I.A. You started to get kinda worried until you got a phone call from her saying she left with some boy she met. Wow,was all you could think. As you stood up to leave you bumped into some frat boy that looked like he had a few to many. "I'm so sorry i didnt mean to bump into you." "Gkkkgkgkkkkk." You couldn't understand any of his drunken gibberish so you decided to walk away when he grabbed your wrist and pulled you back. You tried to get him to let go but somehow his grip was too strong. You looked at him with fear. "Babe, there you are, I've been looking for you everywhere," followed by a kiss on your head. As you were about to give the random man a look, the drunken one walked away. With a sigh of relief your thank you was interupted..."don't worry,I'm Baekhyun, and you are?"
Chanyeol
You went to your friend, Baekhyuns, volleyball match. You two were pretty close so you came to support him and maybe grab a bite afterwards. You never really went out of your way to watch one of your schools sport teams play, but your friend was playing and you wanted to support him. You watched as his team walked out one by one,you cheered for each of them, you cheered especially loud when Baekhyun walked out. When his gaze caught yours you guys couldn't help but share a silly wink. After Baekhyun walked out the tallest boy you've ever seen. He was really good, just like the rest of the team. Your schools team ended up winning. You waited for the boys to shower before you went to hug and congratulate Baekhyun. "Well done,im so proud." "Thanks Y/N,wanna grab something to eat?" "Sure." As the two of you were walking out,Baekyun walked away to say bye to his team. Eventually, you saw him walk back to you with the tall boy you saw earlier. "Uhm Y/N,I hope you dont mind, but i invited Chanyeol to come with us,im sure the two of you will get along." "Yeah,"you said with a shy smile.
Kai
Ever since you were little, you would always dance as a way to relieve your stress or wind down. That's why you were beyond excited when you found out your college had a dance room. You would go there every day after classes. Today however, you were stumped with work, and you ended up going to the dancing room much later than you usually would. It's pretty small so you're usually the only one there and since it was an ungodly hour of the night you expected to still be alone there. As you walked in with your earphones in,you didnt notice the light was already on,never mind the other person slowly dancing in the center of the room. The other person was so engrossed in his dance that he didn't notice you either. He only noticed yoh when you let out a small scream of fright when you saw him. He slipped and you felt really bad as you ran towards him to check if he was okay. "Im so sorry i didnt notice you were here"
"I thought i was the only one who came out here this late"
"I didn't have time to come earlier"
"Oh"
"Yeah,I'm Y/N by the way"
"Hey,I'm Jongin"
Sehun
It was Monday morning,8.a.m.
Way way way to early, especially after the terrible weekend you had. Today had already started off with a headache and 4 new assignments due and a test later on. To make matters worse, you couldn't concentrate becuase of the 3 boys sitting behind you obnoxiously snickering about who knows what girl. You tried to ignore them, but as your headache only got worse, you couldn't help turning around and snapping and the trio.
"Just shut up already, some of us are trying to actually pass and get a job,not just spend their day sleeping around."
You couldnt help feel guilty as soon as it left your mouth. You flinched as you turned to face the front.
You soon heard whispers behind you comming from the three boys and you felt even more guilty,as you were about to turn around you felt one of them tap your shoulder. You summoned up your best serious face and you turned to face him, your serious facade leaving as soon as you saw his apologetic smile.
"Hey ,we're really sorry about making noise,we were just discussing some thing funny that happened this weekend."
"It's okay"
"Okay oh and I'm Sehun"
D.O.
It was 3.a.m. But you could of sworn it was 1.a.m. 20 minutes ago. You've been in the library for the past 8 hours trying to study, but failing miserably. Nothing was making sense. You really needed to past this test in order to pass this semester and you were really trying, but you couldn't understand any of it. All of a sudden you burst out crying, not knowing if it was from stress, exhuastion, frustration or all three. You looked around to see if anyone else was around, but who would be around at this hour. You lowered your head and let the sobs rack through your body. Your cries were so loud you didn't hear the chair next to you being pulled out or someone taking your textbook. After a few moments you felt someone shake you,you looked up and were met with concerned eyes and a kind smile. "Dont worry,i struggled with this last year,I can help you though,I'm Kyungsoo."
Thank you for reading this☺😊I'm not really happy with it but it is my first upload and practice makes perfect right? I hope you enjoyed it and that you have a good day/night.
Also please don't copy/steal my work.
Please let me know if you have any requests.
I'll try to upload whenever i get the chance.

Welcome To The Jungle
EXO Park Chanyeol & Oh Sehun Characters: Park Chanyeol, Oh Sehun, Kim Minseok (Xiumin), Byun Baekhyun, Kim Jongdae (Chen) Summary: Chanyeol decides to go to the Amazon on his vacation week. Once there, be meets an exasperated safari tour guide called Sehun... amongst others... Word Count: 1k+ Warnings: BISH ITS CRACK TURN AWAY NOW IF YOU CANT & DONT
A/N: If you wanna know why, then you should know while my exams, I HAD MINSEOK DANCING TO TEMPO LIKE A BISH IN MY HEAD THE WHOLE TIME LET ME LIVE GDAM
This was such a long time coming UGHHHHHH
i cant believe
“Annyeong!” Chanyeol grinned brightly, bowing 90 degrees to the equally tall man wearing the khaki uniform he was expecting him to wear. Chanyeol was so giddy, he looked like an over-overgrown child; his hands were on either strap of his backpack, and was rolling back and forth on his feet. “I was so excited when I heard my tour guide was from Korea! How long have you been working here?”
The man with lopsided lips blinked, “Long enough to want out.”
Chanyeol burst into bright laughter, making the other pull his face in equally as much disgust as annoyance. The man on the job clenched his fist tightly and did everything in his power not to roll his eyes. He forced a smile and spoke with no conviction whatsoever, “Welcome, sir, to the most spectacular safari you will ever have the privilege to be on.”
Chanyeol broke into the largest grin at his words nonetheless.
“My name is tour guide Oh Sehun and I’ll be showing you the wonders of the amazon today.”
Chanyeol nearly squealed and Sehun finally backed away. “C’mon,” the tour guide said, proceeding to walk towards his ranger jeep, “the sooner we leave, the sooner we get back.”
Chanyeol wasted not a second and ran towards the vehicle, sitting in the front seat, buckling himself in before Sehun even gave instruction. Sehun rubbed his nape and breathed out hot air, “That brat. He was probably spoiled as a child. He has no manners at all.”
Once Sehun was eye’s view of what Chanyeol was doing, he couldn’t even tell his client off because he put the complicated seat belt on without any help. Sehun knit his brows deeply and stuffed himself to the driver’s seat beside him, securing himself in quickly. “Is this your first safari?”
“It’s my third, actually.”
Sehun couldn’t help but scoff out a chuckle, to which Chanyeol thought innocently as an impressed laugh, so he continued, “Yeah, the first time I went on one was on my birthday two years ago.”
Sehun was uninterested, and yet he found himself asking one last question, out of sheer formality. He started the car and grunt when it didn’t open. He turned to Chanyeol, “How old were you?”
“24.”
Sehun, who had been fussing with the engine, whipped his head to Chanyeol’s direction just as the jeep hummed, confirming its ignition. This bastard’s was my age two years ago,  Sehun thought gripping the steering wheel tightly. How sad. “Hold on tight, hyungnim. The road is bumpy.”
The jeep whooshed forward, heading deep into the thick jungle before them, stirring Chanyeol’s insides in excitement. The man with messy hair had his adrenaline pumping. He held a big grin. He couldn’t let Sehun’s statement go unnoticed however, “I’m older than you?”
Unfortunately for you, “Yes.” Sehun answered simply, shifting the stick.
“Waaaah, I have a cool dongsaeng. Cool.”
Sehun upper lip rose out of instictive disgust, which involuntarily prompted him to drive faster. Chanyeol took full advantage of this and raised his hands up in the air, cheering, as if he was on a roller coaster ride. Sehun growled at his actions, proceeding to shout at the man, “Babo-ya! Do you want to get your arms cut off?!”
“MWO? I CAN’T HEAR YOU!” Chanyeol shouted back, louder, not even bothering to put his arms down or stop his obnoxious howling.
If he fucking wakes the tribe, I swear to--
At this point, they were met with a rocky road that was near a very shallow river. It made Sehun drive a little bit more cautiously, and Chanyeol finally keep his hands to himself and hold on to the handle bars.
The jeep came to a stop as they got to furthest the jeep could take them.
Sehun swiftly removed his seat belt in one motion and jumped out, turning to a struggling Chanyeol. He smirked at him and cleared his throat, “This way... hyung.” he placed his hand behind his back and started walking off,  “You have to move quickly if you want to see the animals.”
Once Chanyeol was free from his restrictions, he wasted no time and jumped out of the vehicle. He jogged up behind Sehun who was already walking off. He didn’t notice that Sehun had pulled out a longish knife with him, you know, the ones to chop off leaves and branches and stuff.
Chanyeol pulled out his camera and took pictures with a smile. Sehun finally turned back at him and sighed, “Right. You’re gonna wanna not do that when there are animals around. They have very acute senses of hearing and event he sound of a camera shutter can scare them away, some birds especially.”
The man behind the tour guide lowers his device and nodded slowly. “Oh, gwenchana. Real life experiences are better than pictures anyway.”
Sehun rolled his eyes.
The two continued walking and Chanyeol eventually strided next to Sehun.
“Watch your step, hyung. Some objects on the ground seem--” before Sehun could finish his sentence, Chanyeol stepped on quite a big rock and went wobbling forward, “--invisible.”
Lucky for Chanyeol, he was quick enough to suppost himself, and Sehun had enough heart in him to grab his arm and prevent him from falling. The later of the two did bother hiding the roll of his eyes, the former smiled and spoke a thank you.
“There,” Sehun pointed, “do you see? It’s a toucan.”
“Waaaah,” shutter proceeded by flapping of wings.
Sehun pursed his lips and threw Chanyeol a nasty look. Chanyeol showed his teeth, “Mianhe.”
Sehun released a breath, “Whatever... your loss anyway.”
The two moved not much forward and came across another bird. Unfortunately before Sehun could identify what it was exactly, Chanyeol scared it away by his giggling this time.
The trip continued on, exasperating at Sehun’s end, and excitingly frustrating on Chanyeol’s end, because he kept unintentionally scaring a bunch of animals away. On the bright side, a stick insect thought his shoulder cool. Chanyeol felt bad however that he panicked when it started moving to his neck and swatted it, swiftly ending its life.
At this point, Sehun thinks Chanyeol could even scare away a tiger if they ever come across one, or maybe even a band of gorillas.
Chanyeol started talking about his life in Seoul somewhere between Sehun’s how-much-nicer-it’d-be-not-to-know and thanks-for-boring-me-half-to-death.
Apparently he was a photographer.
How charming.
“-- but then I decided I would much rather do something I wanted, thus I went to another company and ditched the millions of won I--” “Shut up.” Sehun spat out.
Chanyeol pulled his head back in suprise and utter offence. “Mwo-”
“Shhhhh.” Sehun raised a hand and stopped in his tracks, “something’s here.”
For a moment the two stayed perfectly still, and nothing but the jungle spoke. Sehun clenched his jaw, dreading the gut feeling in him. He licked his lips and heard a rustle from his left. Not late after, Chaneyol saw the leaves move. He went reeling towards Sehun, clutching his arm. Sehun hissed, “You woke the tribe. Great.”
The man was small, but he looked furious.
“T-the tribe? Wh--”
“Maehokjeogin neon lovely”
Chanyeol started waking backwards, hiding behing Sehun’s shadow, grapsing onto his biceps. Sehun hissed and shook him off, “They’re doing their tribe chant, it means they won’t attack us yet.”
”Yet?” the other repeated, nervous.
Teum eopsi jopyeojin geori Bulgyuchikaejineun heartbeat Jamsi nuneul gama trust me.”
Chanyeol tilted his head at what he heard, “Is… is that… Korean?”
Sehun rolled his eyes and shoved him back,  “If you want to live to—“ but the tour guide couldn’t finish his argument for there was suddenly a loud screech from the bushes, making Chanyeol yelp and jump into Sehun’s personal space.
Sehun shoved him off, but Chanyeol only recoiled back into his place.
There was a spear by the bushes, both of them could easily tell. Whoever it was was heading for them at an eerily slow pace.
“Are they barbarians? CANNIB—“ “Shut up, and do not raise your voice. It only excites them to know you’re scared.” Sehun cut Chanyeol off. The latter gulped.
Then suddenly, there was a battle-cry like scream and the hair Chanyeol’s skin stood up.
From in front of them emerged at small, mud painted man, wearing a skirt made of leaves and a rock necklace. He looked enraged, his chest was heaving and his already narrow were narrowed. His mangled hair and rock pointed spear made him look intimidating… but not to them, not to anyone sane. In fact, Chanyeol was now just… confused.
Sehun huffed and rolled his eyes.
The tourist leaned to his guide and whispered, “Is he—“ “Yes. Just…” Sehun sighed, “let me handle this.”
Sehun walked over to the man in his normal pace, making the man point his speak at him. “You have upset the jungle.” the shorter one spoke.
“Upset the jungle? Or you and Baekhyun hyung?”
“HIS NAME IS TA!”
Chanyeol pulled his head back and Sehun rolled his eyes, “Minseok hyung, you should head back—“
“MY NAME IS POZI, CITY BOY!” Pozi, or to Sehun and the rest of the world, Minseok shouted at the man, slamming the end of his spear on the ground repeatedly.
Chanyeol decided to speak up at this point. “Jjangkkaman, you’re not a native?”
Sehun cursed Chanyeol’s stupidity and Minseok turned to him, “Native by heart.”
“Hmp, you know what, this is above my pay grade, we should just—“ but yet again, Sehun was cut short.
“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA” someone screamed in and jumped on Chanyeol’s back. Chanyeol was quick to jolt him off however, and he shuddered the way he did when a bug crawled on him.
The man, who looked similar to Minseok, fumed in anger as well.
Chanyeol looked at him like spoiled pizza.
Sehun turned to Chanyeol. “They’re on drugs.”
The newly arrived mud covered man growled, “We are not!”
Sehun nodded his head in full disagreement.
“Baekhyun hyung, you’re wearing mud and leaves. Also, you pretend to be primitive but I caught you making a campfire and roasting marshmallows. Where’d you even get that?”
Minesok spoke, “The jungle provides.”
“Actually, I gave them that.” A separate voice chimed in, and soon a man in attire similar to Sehun’s appeared.
“I’m so sorry these two interrupted your tour,” the man spoke to an utterly confused Chanyeol, stretching his hand out to him. “Kim Jongdae. Biologist and meteorologist,” he introduced, shaking Chanyeol’s hand.
“Uh, Park Chanyeol… photographer?”
The two broke away and Sehun crossed his arms.
“These two, believe it or not, are actually my associates. They believe doing this makes them better scientists.” Jongdae explained, making Chanyeol nod his head as if it was now suddenly perfectly normal, perfectly understandable.
“That seems cool.” Chanyeol spoke.
Sehun pulled a face.
Baekhyun quipped, “Do you want to join our tribe?”
“Ya! I will not have you pull a Jongin here!” Jongdae scolded.
“Kai joined voluntarily.” Minseok spoke.
“Jong-in, his name is J o n g i  n!”
Sehun huffed, “Ye, it’s been fun. Let’s go back now Chanyeol.” Chanyeol suddenly frowned, “Mwo? But they just got here.”
Sehun shot him a look, “So you’re staying.”
Chanyeol was silent. Minseok and Baekhyun cheered and started doing their chant again. Chanyeol turned to Jongdae, who was shaking his head in disagreement.
He pursed his lips, “Alright. I’ll go with you Sehun-ie.”
Jongdae let out a breath of relief.
Sehun scoffed and started walking off, “Don’t call me that.”

Can’t stop thinking ‘bout you (even tho I try) A Trimberly story.
Trini had spent the whole morning trying to avoid her friends. Last night was some shitty time, and the amount of makeup she needed to cover the bags under her eyes was out of proportions. After finishing her test, she packed her things into her bag and headed to the café near campus. Headphones on and some random playlist kept her distracted while she walked.
"Where are you? I've been looking for you all morning."  The message came in the middle of her singalong.
"If it isn't important, I prefer to stay missing."  Quick fingers typed a reply before she could ever think about being subtle.
"You better practice, then. You really suck at hide-and-seek," Zack said in her ear, making her jump.
"Jeez, Zack! Stop doing that." Trini tried to calm her heart. Her pulse was out of control.
"Stop hiding, Crazy Girl," Zack replied placing his arm around her shoulders. "Would you tell me what's bothering you?"
"I barely slept last night due to an exam. I'm just cranky." She entered the cafe sighing loudly. She only wished to be calm today. She just wanted a day to herself. But no. Karma was messing with her. Again.
"Weird. Kim had said the same thing to us." Zack raised an eyebrow.  "You sure it's just because of your exam?" And this is what Trini meant. All the questions she couldn't answer. "Talk to me, Trin. Stop keeping the thing to yourself.” Zack tilted his head, his eyes filled with concern. Trini analyzed his words, wondering if he was right. Last night was nothing but a big mistake. A mistake she would regret for the eternity. Last night was the opposite to Zack's words. Last night was a living nightmare.
"Please?" Zack begged, squeezing her hand forcing Trini to look at him.
"Kim knows everything." Her voice was a whisper, afraid of the event coming true if she raised her voice. "She knows everything and I feel the biggest dumbass in the world. She knows everything and she ran. She left me behind without even yelling at me." Trini felt her heartbreaking as the words came out. The incident playing in her mind like the tragedy it was.
------------------------------------------------------------
"NO! STOP IT NOW!" Trini yelled at her, fighting to escape the embrace.
"Not till you tell me what gets you so absorbed," Kim laughed, still tickling her.
"I will never!" the shorter girl said. Her hands grabbed Kim's in a quick move, her faces inches away as their eyes were locked into each other. "You should live with the intrigue, Princess." Trini cleared her throat before releasing her friend's hands.
"Oh, come on! You love me. You can't keep me clueless." Kim's words clicked something in Trini's head.
"Yes, I can. Even if I love you." For a minute, she felt safe saying those three words. Those same three words that threatened to leave her lips for the last 5 years. Even she was surprised by the patience she had inside her.
"What could be that bad for you to not tell me?" Kim sighed, sitting on the edge of Trini's bed.
"If I tell you, I should kill you," Trini sing sang, hoping for Kim to quit this questionnaire.
The look she got from her friend made her tremble. How could she tell her this without being hurt in the process? How could she speak the words if it'll break them apart? She was sure that losing their friendship was something that-
"Por favor!" Kim begged, taking Trini's hands in hers. Her eyes begging for an answer. Trini knew right then and there that she had lost the battle. And boy, she hated herself for that.
"I..." she tried to find the words. She turned her gaze away from Kim's eyes. This was too hard to say. "I love you," she sighed, fear in her voice. "I love you and I can't help it. No matter how hard I've tried, you got under my skin and by now I'm at your feet. Completely." Her hand released its grip. The warmth beside her, disappearing in a blink.
"I'm... I'm sorry. I have to go." Kimberly rushed to the door, exiting the room at the time Trini spoke gain.
"Of course you have." Her eyes already in tears. The sound of her heart shattering filling his ears. Her world destroyed because she couldn't fight back the words.
------------------------------------------------------------------
"Maybe she froze," Zack said caressing her hand with his thumb.
"Of course she did. Who wouldn't if their friend declared them their love?" Trini fought back the tears at the memory.
"You should talk to h-"
"No. No way am I throwing myself to my imminent death. It is what it is and I have to move on." Trini sentenced before grabbing her bag. Her food unfinished as she stood up. "I'm gonna take the day since my classes are over." She left Zack with the words in his mouth.
.....................................................................................
"Miss Hart. Could you please pay attention?" her teacher asked with a sigh.
"Of course. I'm sorry." Her cheeks red as she felt Jason poking at her ribcage.
"Yes, pay attention or you'll fail,” he teased her. A smirk on his face.
"Ugh. Shut up, Scott" Her mind was absent from classes all day.
Trini's words replaying in her head like a tune you hate so much and your brain keeps playing it over and over again. But this time, the words warmed her heart. Also, those same words fried her brain. She couldn't think. She couldn't speak her mind. She just left her alone. She escaped the situation like a coward. She witnessed the moment in which Trini's heart broke into pieces. She was the one to blame. She was the one who hurt her best friend for nothing. She was the monster she always promised Trini to fight. She panicked and she left. She ran from her love just because she was shocked. She hated herself for being such a loser. She felt things for Trini yet, she let the fear command her. Her bad side took over her, leaving not just one, but two broken hearts.
"I can see the smoke, ya know?" Jason sighed loudly. "You should talk to her." He stood up as the bell rang.
"She avoided us all day, Jason. She doesn't want to see me." Kim shook her head in defeat.
"You don't know that. Yes, she's hurt. Yes, you screwed it up. But she doesn't hate you," Jason finished before Zack and Billy got to their side.
"Hey, Kimmy" Zack's greeted her with a side hug. "You really suck."
"Thanks for speaking wisely," Kim said looking at the floor. "Is she alright?"
"Define alright," Billy spoke suddenly. "She saluted me with a wave. No words at all. And Trini greeting you without a word means that she's struggling with-"
"We know Billy. We know her." Jason squeezed Billy's shoulder, making him understand that he wasn't mad.
"Right. I'm sorry," Billy offered Kim a warm smile, getting a sided smile in return.
"You should really get your shit together. She deserves to be happy and I know you want to be the one." Kimberly felt the pressure of her friends.
Zack was right. She's been dreaming with Trini for a long time now. She could barely avoid staring at her. And when she used her glasses? Oh boy, Kim felt her body trembling at the sight.
"Alright. Wish me luck." She tightened the grip on her bag "See you later."
"Come on, girl. Answer me." Her frustration getting the worst of her as the voice mail appears again; for the fifth time. She decided it was a waste of time trying to call her, speeding her steps toward Trini's room.
One knock on the door... two knocks on the door... The door opened revealing Trini's roommate, who stared at her raising an eyebrow.
"She's not here," was all she got from Lea as the door closed again.
Kimberly could feel herself freaking out, thinking in all the places she could find Trini. The first place she checked was the tree behind the building D. The place was one of Trini's favorite spots to just stay calm and look at the sky, only soft words where allowed. Kimberly found nothing... The library came next. Trini loved to keep herself busy learning about different stuff and reading different stories. It was something usual for Trini to tell tales to Kim when she was sad or has had a bad dream. Even with the boys, Trini invented scary stories, always with a plot twist that got them all laughing for hours.
Kimberly loved the way Trini made her feel safe. Trini was always there for her, even when she got so wasted that the poor girl woke up at 2 am. and had to ask for Jason's car to get Kim back to her dorm safe and sound. An incident that Trini never forgot in order to get free donuts from Kim whenever she felt down.
She was really lost in her memories that when she blinked back to reality, she was on the Cliff. Of course, Trini would be here! Tai chi always calmed her, Kimberly loved to observe her practicing it. Of course, from the shadows. Her favorite was the Chen style. It was cute, even hot, the way in which Trini turned a soft move into an explosive one in just a blink. Just like Trini was doing in this exact moment.
"You never taught me to do that," Kimberly felt her voice tremble with fear.
"You can't do this without knowledge." Trini stopped suddenly in the middle of the move. A loud sigh leaving her lips.
"Do you think you could teach me?" Kim asked with a soft smile. Which had disappeared instantly.
"I suck at teaching," Trini answered, avoiding Kim's eyes.
"Look..." Kim knew better than anyone that Trini was a straight to the point person. "About last night... I know I-"
"Don't. Please don't," Trini shook her head, her voice shaking. "No need to be all soft on me. I screwed it up and I want to face the result with the less amount of pain possible." She sat at the edge of the Cliff, legs hanging in the air. "I deserve better than pity. I've already suffered enough during the last years to get you feeling pity over me." Her gaze on the horizon, where the sun started to set to let the night take over the sky.
"Pity is the last thing I feel for you." Kim sat right beside Trini. Arms touching. Something that if Trini was bothered about, she didn't notice. "Last night I panicked." Kimberly closed her eyes and allowed herself to speak the words. "I panicked because the thoughts I've been having for you were reciprocated. I panicked because I realized that the girl I've always liked, liked me back. I panicked because the fear of not being enough for you took over me at the sound of your words. I panicked because I know that you deserve more than this bimess."
"Sometimes, what you deserve and what you want isn't the same thing," Trini spoke after seconds of silence. Seconds that, to Kimberly, felt like hours. Her eyes still on the sunset.
"Trini." Kimberly took Trini's hand in hers. Something that had become normal to them. "Look at me, please," she begged. Trini obeyed. Her eyes were filled with pain. But there also was hope. A little flame of hope, dancing in the dark. Kim loved to watch at Trini's eyes. They really were open windows to the girl's inside. Only if you were important for her, you could always spy on. "I know you're pretty upset at me and-"
"I'm not upset, Kim. I could never be," Trini's bottom lip trembled unnoticed.
"Thing is... I like you, Trini. I like you and I can't stop thinking about you. Even though I try to think about something else... You always return to my mind. And to be honest, it's bothering me," Kimberly sighed as she blinked her tears away. "I know this could be hard, but I want you to know that I'll be waiting until you decide whether if you can take me in, or if you prefer to break apart. I just want you to know that... Look me in the eyes. Please." Kimberly took Trini's chin with her index and thumb, making eye contact. "I want you to know that you're everything a girl could ask for. You're everything I need and everything I want. You're the one who makes me happy. You're the one who brings me joy in the saddest day. You're the one who keeps me safe from all my demons. And there's no one else who could make me feel at peace. Not in the darkest night. Not in the scariest dream", Kimberly noticed Trini's tears. She brushed them apart with a soft touch. "I hope it isn't too late. But I want you to know that I love you, I've been loving you for a while now and I can't forgive myself for what I did to you. You mean so much more than my best friend, Trini. You mean everything and more."
And just like that, Trini leaned over and kissed her. An affectionate kiss. Full of shyness, full of love... full of untold promises.
Both girls cherished the moment and kept it safe in their memories forever. That kiss was, without doubts, the start of something new.

I’ll be Your Merman
Summary: AU He’s a merman who is being pushed by his parents to find a suitable mate. You were enjoying a day at the pier skateboarding when you met. “I’ll play Ariel if you’ll be my Princess.”
Rating: PG-13
Characters: Reader x Merman! Baekhyun, Merman! Chanyeol (cameo)
Notes: Slightly inspired by a friend’s fictional mermaid drabble and an idea I came up with. Happy Birthday Baekhyun! (5/6 in the US now)
Shoutout to @listenthemoose and @byun--baekbunny – thank you for the likes and for reading the recent drabbles for my Seven First Kisses prompt.
“Not this again!” he groaned as he covered his ears with his hands, turning his back on them.
“It’s time you thought about marrying a nice mermaid,” his mother sighed as she wrung her hands. “I was thinking about Emera? You know the –”
“She spends too much time in the mirror,” he said, scrunching his nose up. “I think she hates me too Umma. Ugh, why do we have to talk about this now?”
“If not Emera, then maybe –” his father started to say, “Hey! Baekhyun you come back here!”
He was already swimming far away from them, ignoring their pleas to come back, ears burning and heart racing. He was almost 26 and most of his friends were either married or starting to mate. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to find one – actually, his problem was finding a girl whom he’d actually have a connection with.
Most of the mergirls he met were spoiled, silly beauties who valued their looks only and some didn’t like that he wasn’t this overly aggressive, stern merman that they desired. He wanted to have shared interests with his mate, wanted her to have fun with him...
“Hyung, wait up!” a deep voice called out.
Baekhyun slowed down and looked over his shoulder to see it was his friend Chanyeol, who was also mateless. Unlike his parents, Chanyeol’s believed in soulmates who would eventually find one another when the time came. Frankly, their philosophy worked as they found each other that way and same for Chan’s older sister.
“They pushed ‘The Talk’ I’m guessing?” Chanyeol prompted as he reached Baekhyun.
“Yeah...again...” he grumbled as he swam over to their favorite drop off ledge. He sat down and picked up a broken piece of coral to chuck off the ledge.
Chanyeol nodded as he threw his own shard of coral off the side. Baek puffed his cheeks out and sighed.
“Are we the only two who don’t have mates?” he sighed.
“Ah...D.O.’s single and um, Chen too I think,” Chanyeol said as he ticked off their friends on his fingers. “I think Xiumin’s mate actually left him, so he’s single again. But to answer you, no.”
Baekhyun snickered – D.O. was a good guy but he didn’t want a dimwitted goddess as his mate. Some of the mermaids admitted that while he had a beautiful singing voice, they couldn’t look past his intense stare. Some wondered if he would end up being a hermit who practiced dark magic, but that was laughable in Baekhyun’s eyes; simply put, their friend was very selective and guarded, which infuriated his family to no end.
“Hey, you wanna go to the surface and check out the humans?” Chanyeol proposed as he pushed himself up. “It’s summertime which means the human girls are going to be showing more skin.”
“Pervert,” Baek teased his friend with a nudge to the arm. He started to sit up, dusting his hands off.
“Ah, we’re both pervs – you’re not sitting anymore,” Chanyeol shot back with a smirk. “Besides, I’m not the one who stole that one girl’s top!”
Baekhyun blushed and shut his eyes at the memory. He, Kai, and Chen were checking out a group of toned, golden-skinned girls who were splashing and jumping around in the waves one time. Chen noticed one of the girls had her top tied loosely and over time, the bow at her neck was starting to slip.
“You’re not gonna do it!” Chen taunted as he leaned on a rock. “You’d feel bad taking her swim top and your face would be all red!”
“Aish, why don’t you do it Big Mouth?” Baekhyun shot back, wiggling his brows.
Chen flushed pink and stammered that he couldn’t do that, especially since the girl looked older than him. “That would be disrespecting a noona,” he said.
Kai was watching the waves and bit his lip as he tried to find a pattern. “Hyungs, you need to do it when it’s a big wave,” he concluded. “Plus you need to be fast – don’t wanna get caught, right?” He drew himself up as he predicted a large one to come rolling in after a smaller one and he looked over at the girls. “That one in the purple, right?”
Baekhyun had followed Kai’s gaze and suddenly, he felt jealous. Kai was handsome and suave around everyone – he didn’t need to be sneaky. Hell, he could practically sweet talk the girl into giving up her top without needing to swim away! He tore a glance at the next wave that was building and decided that he was done watching.
“Aish! Hyung get back here!” Chen hissed as Baekhyun slipped under the surface, swimming rapidly and quietly over to the girl in the purple bikini. He hung back a little as he watched the sand rise up with the power of the wave that was headed towards them. On the surface, he heard the girl and her friends scream as the wave crashed over their heads and he swam closer, fingers reaching for her top that was floating away from her chest. He gave it a gentle tug and the top tie came undone from her neck.
“They’re going to see him!” Chen panicked as he ducked behind the rocks, holding his head in his hands.
“Relax hyung, maybe Baekhyun was just messing with us,” Kai reasoned. “He probably is going to come back without it.”
Baekhyun rose up next to his friends and he smugly held up the purple bikini top. “You were saying?” he asked the two stunned mermen. “Don’t worry, I slipped her a little kiss on her back. She lost her top but she got a kiss from a merman.”
Chen gaped as he stared at the top and tore a glance over at the girls, quickly covering his eyes as he sank behind the rock. Kai chuckled as he heard the girls shriek and the one in purple yelled, asking who kissed her.
“Girl, what are you talking about? Just hang on – I’ll give you my rash guard!” one of them said to her.
“No seriously! Someone kissed my back – who the Hell was that?!” the girl demanded as she cupped her breasts in an attempt to cover them.
“You don’t have that top anymore, do you?” Chanyeol asked as they swam up.
Baekhyun shook his head and mumbled that he let it float back to shore after Xiumin found out what he'd done. Chen and Kai were yelled at by the older merman and all of them were lectured by Suho for risking exposure. The yelling was tolerable, as it earned him some points with the other mermen for being gutsy.
Chanyeol pointed to the rocks under the boardwalk and they swam faster before breaking the surface. Baekhyun gulped for air as he used the rock to steady himself. Chanyeol leaned against the rocks as he scanned the area, smirking when his eyes settled on a busty brunette who was slipping off her sundress to reveal her cutout swimsuit. Baekhyun squinted as he watched some of the humans whiz by each other on the boardwalk, some on roller skates, others on bikes.
“Not now Mom,” you muttered as you ignored a call from her, shoving your phone back into your pocket. She was probably calling to ask if you had studied for your exams and finished your homework – you had to chalk it up to her short term memory that this was summer and you were long done with college for the semester.
You swerved around a couple on your skateboard, keeping your eyes ahead to find your best guy friend, who was supposed to meet you there any moment. You had grown up a few blocks away from one another and were quite close as kids. Now that you were older and finishing up college, it was hard to keep in touch as often, given the fact that you both attended different schools. But today, it was going to be like old times – just the two of you skateboarding through town and being dorks together.
“Excuse me, pardon me!” you called out to people as you maneuvered your way around them. You squinted to see if you could spot him and grinned when you saw a familiar shirt he’d wear. The smile, however, began to fade when you neared, noticing another girl clad in a pretty dress beside him.
“Sam! How you’ve been?” you called out as you stopped your skateboard. You picked it up and walked the rest of the way over to him.
Sam looked up from talking to the girl and raised a hand. “Oh hey Y/N,” he began, “ah...what are you...what are you doing here?”
You held up your skateboard and shot him a knowing smile. “You said we were going to have a skateboarding reunion, just like the old times.”
Sam snapped his fingers and slapped his forehead. “Ah no! I completely spazzed Y/N! Sorry, I’m actually on a date with my soon-to-be fiance – she’s in town to meet my parents. Oh that reminds me – Y/N this is Fiona and Fi, this is Y/N, my childhood friend.”
Fiona relaxed when Sam introduced you and you forced yourself to smile as you shook her hand. You noticed that she extended the hand with her sparkling diamond ring and you tried to keep your tone polite.
“It’s nice to meet you Fiona,” you said. “Sam, congratulations! Wow, time sure does fly!”
Sam nodded as he rubbed the back of his neck. “Listen, I’m sorry that I messed up the dates Y/N, but let’s reschedule, okay?”
You nodded and gestured to one of the food stands on the boardwalk. “I’m going to um, probably grab a bite now,” you said as you put your skateboard down. “Unless you guys want to come with?”
“Sorry Y/N, but we actually have reservations for Jewel of the Sea at 1,” Fiona apologized as she clutched onto Sam’s arm. She checked her phone. “Oh that’s in a few minutes – we really should get going Sam.”
Sam checked his watch and jumped when he saw the time. “Yeah, you’re right. Hey, Y/N it was awesome seeing you again! Stay cool, okay?”
You nodded before stepping onto your skateboard again and pushing off, refusing to look back.
“What is that?” Baekhyun asked as he pointed to a girl whizzing down the boardwalk on a two wheeled board.
Chanyeol tore his gaze from the girl and craned his neck up. “Ah that’s a skateboard – another thing humans use to get around. It looks so cool – wish I had legs so I could do that!”
Baekhyun was focused on the rider more than the board, his eyes never leaving you. You sucked up a sharp breath of air as you reached the end of the walkway, stopping your board and pulling it up before taking a seat at the end. You dangled your legs off the edge and sighed as you removed your helmet.
You didn’t like Sam romantically but seeing him with his fiance made your heart ache for those old days when you two were inseparable. He was the 12th person in your circle of friends to recently announce a marriage or kids on the way, which made you feel alone and out of place. Sure you had dated people but nothing lasted very long. Plus you had declared that you were still young and not looking to settle down right away, especially since you were trying to wrap up college and figure out your life.
“Hyung, I want to get her attention,” Baekhyun said as he nudged Chanyeol. “What should I do?”
Chanyeol bit his lip as he looked over at you and tried to rack his brain. “Throw something? Well don’t hit her of course, but maybe it might get her attention? Sing? Wait, that might be a little –”
“Hello, you came to me/Giving me your shy scent/In my hazy dream/You were shining, dazzling,” Baekhyun sang, eyes focused on you seated overhead.
“...cliche but ah...that might work?” Chanyeol finished as he watched Baekhyun sing while looking at you.
You looked out at the water straight ahead, closing your eyes as a gentle breeze blew across your face. You strained your ears as you heard a male voice singing and smiled. It was soothing, pleasant to listen to, and sweet.
“Hmmm...okay Google, what song is this?” you murmured as you pulled up your phone to look it up.
“Ah you need to try something else hyung, she got distracted with her phone,” Chanyeol sighed as he watched you.
Baekhyun straightened up and grinned widely. “That’s it!”
“Huh, you must be an indie singer or new,” you sighed as Google concluded that the song you heard wasn’t found. You turned off your phone and put it down on the deck.
“WHOA – HEY!!” you yelled as something came flying up, barely missing your face. You held your arms up to shield your face and heard something land on your skateboard.
“You almost hit her!” Chanyeol groaned as he held his head in his hands.
“Sorry! I was trying to make sure it got up there!” Baekhyun whined. He nervously looked up at you and prayed that it didn’t hit you.
You pried your eyes open after hearing the item on your skateboard and glanced over to see it was a purple shell. Huh?
You looked out over the water to see if anyone was out there before hearing someone call out underneath. You looked down and saw a young man with warm brown hair waiving to you, a sheepish look on his face.
“Sorry! I tried to aim it at your hand but maybe I angled it wrong!” he called out. “Are you okay?”
You nodded and held up the shell. “It landed on my skateboard – did you want it back?”
He shook his head no and swam out so he get a clearer view of you. “I just wanted to say that I think your skateboard’s cool and that you seem really good at riding it,” he said with a smile.
“Oh thanks,” you replied with a grin. “How’s the water today?”
He shrugged before shooting you a small sly grin. “I think it’s great but don’t take my word for it – why don’t you come in?”
You laughed and gestured to your outfit. “I can’t – didn’t bring a swimsuit and I can’t abandon my skateboard – someone will steal it! How about you come meet me up here?”
He hung his head and felt his cheeks flush. Crap, how was he going to do this now?
“I um...” he trailed off. “I’m not ready to call it quits, swimming-wise, you know?” It was a weak excuse, but maybe...?
“I guess we can talk just like this then,” you said with a shrug. You drew a knee up to your chest and hugged it. “So, you got a name I can call you by?”
“Baekhyun,” he said. “How about yours?”
“Y/N,” you replied. “You swimming by yourself today or with friends?”
Baekhyun looked around for Chanyeol and sighed when the other was nowhere to be found. “Well, my friend was here with me, but I think he abandoned me for a pretty girl!”
“Join the club,” you said with a shake of your head. “Was supposed to go skateboarding with a friend and he mixed up the dates. Now I’ve just learned he’s getting married.” You sighed as you rested your chin on your knee.
“Have you ever felt like you’re the weirdo when everyone else is –”
“Growing up and getting married while you’re not?” he finished. He nodded as he brushed a strand of hair out of his face. “Tell me about it! I just want to enjoy being free but my parents and friends keep pushing me to find someone!”
“Yeah! I mean, I want to do stupid things like skateboard through town with friends now instead of trying to relive my youth when I’m like, I don’t know? 50 or something?” you added, sitting up straighter.
“Guess we have a lot in common,” Baekhyun murmured. He felt Chanyeol tugging his tail under the surface, a signal that they needed to head back before everyone else started lecturing them. He sighed as he looked around, making sure no one on the beach could see him. He swallowed a lump in his throat and looked up at your eyes.
“Can you keep a secret?” he asked.
You nodded as you leaned closer, fingers gripping the edge of the pier.
He nudged Chanyeol off and flicked his tail up to show it to you. The scales shone brilliantly in the sunlight and you blinked as the tail disappeared under the surface. No way...
“Hyung, what are you doing?” Chanyeol groaned under the water.
“Whoa,” you breathed, “it’s...beautiful. Am I the first human that you’ve shared this with?”
Baekhyun nodded and he tilted his head. “I’ll be your Ariel if you be my Prince Eric?” he joked with a smile.
You laughed at his silly analogy to the Disney movie and nodded. “You have my word that I won’t tell anyone,” you promised. “So...I guess that makes you my little merman?”
Baekhyun pouted, jutting his lip out. “Hey! I’m not that little – I’m almost 26!”
“Just teasing,” you said with a wink. “Hey, how can we keep in touch? I’d like to talk again, if that’s cool.”
Baekhyun pointed to the shell on your board and grinned. “Turn it over,” he said. “Ugh, I have to go now – my friend’s nagging me. See you soon?”
You frowned as you picked up the shell and turned it over in your palm. Scratched into the glossy, iridescent surface were a string of numbers and dashes – his shell phone number.

You: Hey Dae!
You: Wanna hang out tomorrow?
You: Maybe we can get some studying done since it’s almost exam time ^
Chen: Not this week.
Chen: Busy with Jaeun, I’m helping her with science
You: ???
You: Aren’t you failing science though?
You: Do you want me to come as well?
Chen: No thanks to you
Chen: Also, no to that offer.
You: Wow
You: coming from the guy who doesn’t even return my calls, ignores me in the halls and ditches his BEST FRIEND for some girl he just met!
Chen: Whatever
Chen: You’re just jealous of Jaeun
You: Jealous of what, Chen?
Chen: The fact that she’s prettier and skinnier than you!
You: Wow.
You: Ok well, have fun Kim Jongdae.
Chen’s POV
He scrolled through his recent messages with you and he mentally slapped himself.
How could he have been so inconsiderate?
He had only told you all those things about Jaeun in an effort to maybe spark something inside of you.
Love.
Now he had just lost the chance to make it up to you.
His phone rang.
It was her.
“Hey Jaeun, I’m not feeling well today,” he says into the phone.
“Oh, well get better Jagiya! I’ll see you on Monday then!” She replied, hanging up.
Chen sighed and called you.
Hi… sorry I can’t hear you… what?-
He hung up immediately, hearing the voicemail you had set up to prank anyone who called you.
He smiled at the memory.
He called Baekhyun.
“Hello?” Baekhyun said once he had answered the phone, he was at Chanyeol’s house with you and Chanyeol.
“Hey Baek,” Chen began, “whats up?”
“Well, I’m at Chanyeol’s house with Y/-“
“With Y/N? Is her phone near her?” Chen asks, hoping that you weren’t ignoring him.
“Uh, yeah, why?” Baekhyun asks.
“No reason,” chen sighed, “can I talk to her?”
“Um, I’ll ask,” Baekhyun paused, “she’s busy right now,” “Which means she doesn’t want to talk to me,” chen said.
“No, she’s busy. Like she’s helping Chanyeol with his science work,” Baekhyun snaps, “I’ve got to go. Bye Jongdae.”
Chen almost threw his phone across the room.

Your POV
After helping Chanyeol, the three of you steadily finished the assessments you had due and before you knew it, it was time to have dinner. “My parents are out, so we gotta get takeaway or eat out, what do you guys think?” Chanyeol asked.
“There’s this really nice pizza place I tried the other week,” you say.
“I’m up for pizza,” Chanyeol agrees.
“I dunno, its really greasy and-“ “Baek you’re beautiful the way you are,” Chanyeol said, kissing the top of his boyfriend’s head.
“Pizza it is!” You say, grabbing your bag before heading out the door with the two boys.
When you got to the pizza place, Baekhyun and Chanyeol went to find a seat whilst you went to order, since Baekhyun had this thing about ordering food and Chanyeol couldn’t remember the menu for the life of him.
Once you had finished ordering, you turned around and bumped into someone.
“I’m so sorry, are you ok?” A male voice asked, you got up and dusted yourself off.
“Yeah I’m goo- Jongdae?” You said, surprised. Then your surprised expression turned to one of anger, “aren’t you meant to be with Jaeun?” “Um, yeah she cancelled on me,” he lied.
“Don’t lie to me Jongdae, we’ve known each other for our whole lives. Why did you lie to me?” you ask. Chanyeol had to restrain Baekhyun from going over to where you were and beating talking some sense into Chen.
Without waiting for an explanation, you pushed past him and sat with Baekhyun and Chanyeol at the table they had chosen.
Baekhyun reached across the table and placed his hand on yours.
“Don’t worry about him,” he said, offering a reassuring smile. “Yeah,” Chanyeol agreed, “if he chooses some girl he’s been with for like, what? A week? Over you, he didn’t deserve your friendship in the first place!”
You sigh, placing your head in your hand, “it doesn’t help that I’m in love with him, Chan.”
Chen was sitting in the booth next to yours, hoping he would get the chance to run into you and explain himself. He was about to stand up and go to the bathroom when he heard you say the words he’d been waiting to hear for so long… ’It doesn’t help that I’m in love with him, Chan.’
His heart raced, he stood up and walked to your booth.
“Chen?” You ask, not expecting him to actually approach you after you had found out he blew you off for no reason.
“Y/N, I haven’t been the best friend lately, and I know you might hate me,” he said, holding your spare hand, “but I want you to know that I’m in love with you, I have been for the longest time.”
You were skeptical, why would he go after Jaeun if he was in love with you?
He was in love with you.
“What about Jaeun?” You asked.
“Forget about her, I was going to break it off with her later today-“
“Jong-Jongdae?” Came a feminine voice. Jongdae turned around to see Jaeun standing there.
“Jaeun-“
