(As of writing the following excerpt, this is only a what-if scenario; I don't know where exactly to fit this into the canon)

Henrieta is sitting at a table at one of the communal areas, taking a much needed break after cleaning the private showers and restrooms at the Sanctuary. She just brewed some tea and was waiting on her niece, Hanna, to arrive from... somewhere.

"She's never been this late... I hope she's okay."

As if on cue, Hanna bursts through the door. She looked like she'd seen Hell itself, and she was panting as if she had to run from something.

Henrieta jumps out of her seat. "Hanna! Are you hurt? What happened!?"

Hanna takes a moment to catch her breath. "It's... It's so awful. I didn't think he would be like that... I'm so stupid." The young adolescent begins to tear up.

Henrieta furrows her eyebrows. "Hanna... what did you do? Who did you go to see this time? Tell me right now."

"I don't want to tell you, Aunt Henri." Hanna starts to cry.

Henrieta's face eases up. "I won't tell your mom, if that's what you're worried about."

"No! You'll make me go back there if I tell you!"

Henrieta scoffs. "Who would ever make me act like that?"

Hanna gives her aunt a serious gaze. "You know exactly who, Aunt Henri."

"Shit..." Henrieta heavily sighs and buries her face in her hands. "Not him. Not my Sunshine."

"I'm sorry, Auntie." Hanna hugs Henrieta. "I should have known better."

Henrieta returns her niece's hug. "It's okay. You didn't know. And I won't make you go back if you don't want to."

Hanna studies Henrieta's face. It is rife with worry and, more importantly, morbid curiosity.

"...If we have tea first, I'll take you. Alright?"

Henrieta tries to put up a front. "No, Hanna. I'm not making you do that. I told you."

"I wanna see what you have to say about him. We won't get close. I... really don't want to be close to him ever again. But I'll show you."

Henrieta relents and agrees. The two sit in silence while drinking tea, with one knowing exactly what lies before her, and the other having no clue what she is about to behold.

After a bit of packing and prep in the case of getting stranded, the two hop on a handmade broom with backpacks on their backs, just outside the Sanctuary's cave mouth entrance.

"Alright," sighed Hanna. "Let's start running to get it going. Follow my lead."

The pair begin jogging for a bit, then Hanna quickly buries her right foot into the ground as if to make a leap, to elevate the broom into the air.

"How do you time travel from here, Hanna?" Henrieta finally inquires.

"I usually let the broom take me wherever, but if I want to see something specific, I have to think about them and what they look like. I gotta focus, so give me a minute. Oh, yeah, close your eyes. Trust me on that."

Henrieta shuts her eyes and there's silence except the wind at the duo's backs. Then nothing except a suspicious, nasty smell that began creeping up her nostrils.

"Okay..." Hanna whispers cautiously. "We're here."

Already regretting her choice to come here, Henrieta didn't want to open her eyes. She was afraid of seeing the source of the stench. Slowly though, she opened one after the other. What Henrieta caught a whiff of are the charred, rotten remains of various human and humanoid beings, even Fae and Angel remains. The burnt landscape in front of her and beyond was contrasted by a beautiful, blue, clear sky.

The only living sentient things seen around were animals. Songbirds were chirping as happily as ever. Squirrels were foraging and leaping over bones. Frogs were croaking in a pond nearby.

Most notably, though, was the huge murder of crows to the west of them. Hanna became visibly terrified at the sight of the crows, and began backing up, not turning her back.

"We need to run. Now."

"It's just some crows, Hanna--"

Henrieta turns around to see Hanna hiding behind a thick tree, its bark marred with claw marks. She turns back around to face the crows, who now had a guest alongside them. He moves through the crows until he is leading them, revealing his familiar features. As he approaches, Henrieta is frozen, trying to figure out how so much malice is coming from someone who is, in her world, such a kind and caring individual.

The man looked like her beloved Apollo. Nothing more. Henrieta kept telling herself that, but it provided little comfort.

"I thought I killed all you insufferable maggots... Which piles of bodies did you crawl out from, I wonder?"

Henrieta gulped, as if quite literally swallowing her fear, however her face was still blank.

The man sniffed the air for a moment, and winced as if he had caught the scent of manure.

"I smelled a fucking Witch here earlier. I know you're back, you little shit stain. If this is your backup, then I suppose I'll thank you for the free meal." He smiles, looking down at Henrieta.

Henrieta snaps out of it. "I didn't come here to fight-- or be eaten. I wanted to see a world that wasn't my own. There's a guy I know back home that looks a lot like you. What's your name?"

The strange fellow scoffed. "This is the first time in a long time that I've had an ant like you be so bold with me. Doesn't matter if I look like someone you know. Are you not scared of me-- Lord of All, Ares?"

"Ares--" Henrieta begins to speak, but she gets an icy look from the man now calling himself Ares. She gets the feeling it's a 'don't address me in such a familiar manner' stare. She starts over.

"Lord Ares, you must have had a lot of hate and bitterness in your heart to kill everyone here. I know this because I know a version of you that decided to try and love again, instead of giving up on it."

Ares once again cracks a smile, slightly amused. "He must be a weakling, in that case."

Henrieta is incensed, but keeps her now cool exterior. "He's just as strong as you, if not stronger."

Ares's smile disappears as he becomes annoyed. "That's nonsense. I don't think you know anything at all. You're trying to trick me into letting you go, aren't you?"

Henrieta feels a bit of guilty glee as she thinks of the only thing that Apollo was private about until very recently. "I know about Nandys. You listened to him a few too many times, didn't you?"

Ares is now in a panic, just as Henrieta had hoped.

"H-How do you know about that?! I know you're not a Witch like your friend behind you..."

"I told you, I know the 'you' that could have been. He's far from a weakling."

Ares, quickly recovered from his shocked state, lets out a haughty laugh. "I get it now!"

Henrieta holds a confused look. "Get... What?"

Ares grins darkly. "You only know the other one. The weakling. You don't know that he's weak because you haven't been with me."

Henrieta realizes what Ares is trying to suggest, and it takes her all of her strength not to gag. He continues to explain it anyway.

"You should stay here with me... With us."

Ares proceeds to take Henrieta's hand and kiss it, leaving some residue. Henrieta is mortified, but she is afraid of making any sudden movement, such as jerking back. She wipes off the spit on her pants in disgust.

"Not in a million fucking years. You can't get me like that either, you asshole."

Ares's eyes got wide. Few had breathed a word of the slightest critique to him in almost two decades, even less had told him no. He felt as if he could crumble to pieces right then and there. More importantly, he felt... Jealousy. Dejection. Without realizing it, his shocked expression morphed into a rather pitiful one as he put his head down.

"What could he have that I do not...?" He said in a low tone.

The tiny Dhampir clicked her tongue and rolled her eyes. "I told you. He chose to continue loving others. That takes more courage than using your physical strength or magical powers to have your way."

Ares looks up, speechless.

Henrieta continues her tirade. "I know you realize you regret what you've done. That's why you won't kill me. If you really wanted to do that, you would have hounded me like you did my niece."

Ares remains a statue before this mere halfling.

"The 'weakling' isn't the lonely one. You are. You chose to listen to your Draconic half's murderous impulses, leaving nothing but death behind you. That is why you are alone, Ares."

Hanna is still behind the clawed-up tree, phone in hand, trying not to die from laughter. Unbeknownst to both parties before her, she recorded the entire conversation.

Ares was still refusing to move. Henrieta had had enough and was ready to leave, confident that he wasn't going to anytime soon.

Henrieta turned around to the marred tree. "Hanna, let's get the Hell out of here, before I smack that stupid look off his face."

Hanna pops her head out from behind the tree. "Good, 'cause I thought that guy was gonna turn us into baked spaghetti."

Henrieta looks at Hanna putting her phone away. "...Saying that as you finish recording us having that fucked up conversation. Don't you ever show that vid to Apollo. I'm dead serious."

Hanna nods solemnly. "Yeah, I know. He'd have a meltdown if he saw someone-- himself kinda? Act like that. But you were so cool standing up to him, I had to grab it."

The two lift off on Hanna's broom, and Henrieta closes her eyes again in preparation for the quick return trip home. However, only seconds passed before Hanna let out a hair raising scream. "NO! GET AWAY! AUNT HENRI, LOOK BEHIND YOU!"

Henrieta turned her head and opened her eyes to see the man she just lectured tailing behind with black fiery wings-- and picking up speed. As he approached, he had his arms outstretched and was saying something that became clearer as he closed the distance between himself and the two ladies.

"...please! Please come back! You're the only one in this world who understands me! I need you! I can't do this alone-- I WON'T!!!"

Ares reaches to grasp the bristles of Hanna's broom, and Henri reacts with a swift back kick to Ares' arm.

Henrieta screeches in disgust. "GET THE FUCK AWAY FROM ME! I DON'T WANT YOU, YOU FUCKIN' FREAK! GO ROT BY YOURSELF!"

Ares was not backing down, even in the face of such extreme objection. He attempts to tear Henrieta off the broom while also making another desperate plea.

"I can become more like him if you stay with me! I want to be loved too! PLEASE LOVE ME TOO!!" Ares is in tears for the first time in years, perhaps even a couple decades.

Henrieta, having dodged his arms several times, finally stops to look at him with exasperation. She sighs, preparing to say the one thing she did not want to tell this perverted version of her beloved.

"Ares, if I stay with you... You'll just end up killing me later. Don't bother asking me how I know. I just do. You're gonna get overwhelmed one day and kill me because you are really shit at handling your emotions. You've made your bed, now lay in it. And leave me alone. I don't have anything to offer you, and you can't offer me anything except for a painful death at your hands."

Ares' eyes widened with tears still streaming down his freckled cheeks. His whole body relaxes, letting himself fall away from the airborne broom. Before he is out of earshot, he says one last thing to Henrieta, wearing a bittersweet smile.

"Then I hope that other me is better to you than I ever could dream of being."

Ares falls towards the ground and out of sight. A panicked Hanna picks up speed again to get herself and her aunt back home as soon as possible.

"If that was a fake out and he comes back, I'mma die."

Henrieta pats Hanna's tense shoulder. "He won't. I promise. I'll put you up in my room for a nap when we get back. It's the least I can do for putting you through all this."

"You owe me a lot more than your bed for this flamin' hot garbo. Auntie, you better kiss my ass for the next two weeks to keep this a secret!"

Henrieta puts her head down and sighs out a "Yes ma'am."

My Favorite Games of 2023.

Hi. Hello. Thanks ever so much for clicking on this page. Happy to have you.

First thing's first: I'm a little freak when it comes to video games. I don't feel the need to beat most games I play. From Software is one of my favorite studios in the industry and I've never finished a single one of their games. This means, fortunately, that I get to play a LOT more games than the average bear.

I've written up some blurbs about my top ten favorite games from 2023, but before that here's the list of every game I remember playing this year that left any sort of lasting impact on me (in no particular order):

Now that you understand the kind of freak you're dealing with…

Let's dive into my top ten favorite games from this objectively fucked up year.

10. El Paso Elsewhere Developed by Texas indie studio Strange Scaffold, El Paso Elsewhere is a Max Payne-clone with vampires, an opinionated narrator, and lots and lots of bullet time. As a small studio punching well above their weight class, Strange Scaffold leans into abstract, PlayStation 1 minimalism when it comes to visuals and pairs them with a soundtrack that will make your hands sweat. The vibes are here and they're ready for the end of the world. I'm personally also a big fan of everything this studio stands for.

9. Mr. Sun's Hatbox I want you to imagine Metal Gear Solid V. Now I want you to imagine that game as a 2D, level-based, slapstick platformer you can play with up to three friends. If you think that sounds stupid, you'd be right. And it's beautiful. As you build up a secret army of soldiers with various skills (and disorders), you'll start to develop *favorites*. This game constantly asks if you're willing to send those favorites on a harrowing mission and risk losing them forever… or if you'd rather send an idiot you recently captured who blinks constantly and can't kill anyone without fainting.

8. Dredge Every year I feel like I find one game that falls into the “just one more round” category, and baby… Dredge was it for 2023. As a weary fisherman in strange waters, you'll make the most out of your 12 measly hours of sunlight only for your daily voyages to inevitably pull you into the darkness of night, and night is when things get weird. Rocks emerge from the fog that you swear weren't there before, your equipment malfunctions, and you're pretty sure you just saw something in the water… something big. Despite only containing a small collection of islands, the world of Dredge manages to feel vast - perhaps vast enough to swallow you whole.

7. Resident Evil 4 Remake I was curious to see what sort of changes would be made to the timeless classic and father of modern 3rd person shooters, Resident Evil 4. I wasn't let down. RE4 Remake takes all the things that didn't age well about the original, tossed them out, and replaced them with only good things. And MORE things! It's campy, fun, and better than a game of bingo.

6. Jusant I really feel like this one didn't get the recognition it deserves. Jusant is a rock climbing game that combines the quiet contemplation of Journey with the mechanical specificity of Death Stranding. Unlike Death Standing, though, there is very little story to interrupt your flow. There are plenty of collectible bits to find for those curious to learn more about what happened before the events of the game, but the environmental storytelling does most of the heavy lifting. For me, the joy of the game comes from how it feels. Right trigger controls your right hand grip, and left trigger controls left hand grip. Plan your route, manage your stamina, and climb high above the clouds in search of answers.

5. F-Zero 99 This. Shit. Slaps. I've never been a big F-Zero guy, but this MADE me one. The “battle royale”, 99 player format is the perfect fit for the ruthless, high octane world of the game. Races last about three minutes, and friend, they are the most intense, white-knuckled three minutes of your life. The decision to make your boost meter the same as your health meter started in F-Zero 64 (I believe), and it is so much more HARROWING in this game when another player could side-swipe you mere meters from the finish line and blow you to bits. Sadly it's only playable via Switch Online, but it made me cheer, laugh, and scream enough this year to earn a spot in my top 5.

4. Alan Wake 2 Remedy makes weird games that also manage to exist in the AAA space and for that I will forever love them. Although Alan Wake 2 resembles a 3rd person shooter survival horror, I'd honestly say it's more of a narrative game than anything else. There's sidequests, there's puzzles, there's upgradeable skills, but at the end of the day the characters, world, and story are what kept me playing. If you haven't checked them out recently, you should definitely watch a story recap of the original games before diving into this sequel, but the wild swings for the fences this game takes are well worth that small price of admission. There's a god damn musical number, for Christ's sake.

3. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom I've really got nothing to say about this game that most people don't already know. It's incredible. The fact that Nintendo made a game that redefined an entire genre and then made a SEQUEL to it that ups the ante is remarkable. To be honest, I've only cleared the Rito, Zora, and Goron cities. I got a bit tired of exploring the depths and guiding Koroks to their friends, but I can't deny the sheer level of complexity and polish on display here. I saw someone on TikTok build a functioning Mecha Godzilla in this game. Good God. I've heard that the ending of this game is one of the best in the franchise, and if I'd seen it this year then it may have wound up higher on my list, but for the time being I'll continue picking up this masterpiece from time to time, chipping away at it until the day comes that I can finally smack the tits off thicc Ganondorf.

2. Half-Life (25th Anniversary Update) I know I'm gonna get shit for this, but I don't care. This year was the 25th anniversary of Half-Life and Valve released an update that made playing it (and it's online Death Match) much more accessible. I threw it on my Steam Deck out of curiosity, expecting to play for 20 minutes. I could not put it down. It is unbelievable how modern this game still feels. I simply had so much fun sprinting through the corridors of Black Mesa with a dozen weapons strapped to my back, blasting aliens and military Spec-Op chumps as a 24(?!) year old theoretical physicist.

1. Baldur's Gate III This game is fucked up, man. The sheer amount of writing in this game scares me. We can all talk about how BIG this game is, it deserves it, but the thing BG3 does better than any other role playing game I have ever experienced is actually encourage roleplaying. I've played through Act I four times now, with four different groups of friends, and it has felt fresh every time. I have seen the same events play out in so many different ways that it boggles the mind, but in every one of those play sessions I see players asking themselves “What would my lil guy do here?” rather than "what is the best thing to do here?" The game rewards players constantly for just trying shit and the D&D 5e rule set means playing like the character you said you were from the start leads to frequent Points of Inspiration. Maybe one day I'll see the end of this story (probably not), but I don't have to in order to feel a connection with BG3's world, characters, and most impressively, the characters I made myself.

✨31 DAYS OF DICK (GRAYSON)✨

2023 EDITION

Hello and Welcome everyone! With February here, the 31DOD prompt list had to make its appearance. This time we will be exploring a bit outside the realm of comics; we will make our panel presentation and writing... Limitless. There is far too much for all of us to say, so this time around the structure has been made more flexible. I also think these prompts are varied and quite fun! (I do hope you guys think so too!)

Just to make something clear before I continue, this prompt list is for the 31 Days Of Dick (Grayson) event that will start in March! Fluffy February 2023 Recap

Mission success: I wrote something every day! Some of it was short, some of it was elaborate. Main link to the AO3 collection will be in the reblog later today.

1. Hello -- Theron Shan notices something strange going on at base (with hideous fanart!)

2. Soft -- Theron snuggles with Eva Corolastor (smuggler oc) early in the morning, before he has to go...

3. Anniversary -- Jace Malcom, a stickler for etiquette, arrives with an appropriate first anniversary present for Eva (and Theron).

4. Starlight -- After finding Nok Drayen’s treasure, Eva takes Corso Riggs, Risha Drayen, and Bowdaar somewhere special to celebrate.

5. Amber -- Arcann seeks redemption in the form of Darth Marr’s lightsaber, with the help of Talos Drellik. I’ve already decided I’m going to re-edit this for a larger work in the indeterminate future. Cameo by Ramesses (Sith Warrior OC)

6. Stretch -- Jace watches Satele Shan walk through her lightsaber katas as he drafts a critical sales pitch.

7. Cloak -- Jace deals with the crisis of the day, thanks to his brother, Kal Malcom. I’m mentioned Kal in the past, but this is his first appearance as a character. Let’s just say he’s different from his big brother.

8. Callous -- Eva and Theron spend time together at the firing range.

9. Breezy -- Rass Ordo talks with Torian Cadera and thinks about Mandalorians in love. Then he meets Fria Whitcord (consular OC).

10. Thunder -- Athene Corolastor tends to Eva during her first thunderstorm. Athene has been illusive as a narrative voice until now. Instead of the ethereal, light figure she looks like, she’s definitely coming out with a harder edge than I anticipated.

11. Immaculate -- Arcann goes to see his mother Senya Tirall for an important appointment.

12. Shell -- Eva goes on her first mission with Theron after the carbonite freeze. This is a heist fic, with background bickering from Lana Beniko and Koth Vortena.

13. Pride -- As he holds their son Argento (Argo for short), Theron talks to Eva about the pitfalls of parental pride. This does have some sad feels in there, but everyone is safe and happy here.

14. Free Space: Heartbeat -- Theron goes on his first mission since Ziost, guided through the guts of Zakuul by Marcus Trant. He takes a detour to visit someone. This is the long one of the bunch, at 1800+ words.

15. Reward -- Things weren’t always bad with Darmas Pollaran. A brief look at the beginning of the relationship between Eva and Darmas, right after Balmorra in Chapter 2.

16. Glow -- A fluffy, slightly risque fic on Copero with Eva and Theron: they have plans.

17. Blessed -- Corso gets to know Guss Tuno shortly after Hoth.

18. Glide -- Theron races in his first swoop competition in front of Jace, a fellow former swooper.

19. Loop -- Eva, Corso, and Hylo the cat arrive on Coruscant for the first time.

20. Sink -- The state of a sink and the surrounding environs can reveal a lot about a person. This seems to have been a favorite with readers. :)

21. Tender -- For once, Lana gets hurt, and her friends are there for her.

22. Remember -- Eva experiences her first “Eternal Fleet Remembrance Day” with Theron.

23. Crave -- Aric Jorgan catches Theron at the cantina at 0300, due to unforeseen happy circumstances. This one has some CWs at the top.

24. Bubbly -- Day 2 of the ‘official’ Jace Malcom/Satele Shan relationship on Alderaan.

25. Murmur -- Theron is greeted by Eva and their daughter, Dyominia, after an unexpected mission gone wrong.

26. Joy -- Joy is a noisy house, according to Jace Malcom. Cameo appearances by Kal, Theron, Eva, Argo, and Dyo.

27. Blaze -- They who shoot together, stay together. Or at least that’s Akaavi’s advice to Eva and Theron.

28. Goodbye -- the silly-ass bordering-on-crackfic sequel to #5, starring Arcann, Koth, and Talos.

“Hello my dear” Viggo said smoothly. Hiccup took a deep breath and stood up. He turned around to face the Viking Chief and spoke his mind.

“Don’t ‘hello my dear’ me. What the fuck were you thinking?” Hiccup didn’t normally use that sort of language but his temper was flaring even higher now with Viggo smiling at him. “Shooting down the dragons? Hurting my friends!? We had a deal” He walked closer to Viggo, almost getting into his face. Hiccup scowled up at the man waiting for his response.

“You look so cute when you’re angry.” Viggo whispered to Hiccup. Hiccup tried to keep the scowl on his face but it faltered slightly.

Boys Planet Eps 9-10 Recap: Say My Name

Hello, beautiful people! As you may know, I already wrote a recap/master post for episode 9, and another one for episode 10. This recap focuses just on the stuff that’s relevant to team “Say My Name” -- so their rehearsal period and their additional focus/footage in episode 9, as well as their rehearsal footage and performance in episode 10. Just say “read more” and all will be revealed.

The First Rehearsal Segment

At 23:20, we endure the gut-churningly uncomfortable atmosphere at team Say My Name for a solid eight minutes.

The editing is really pushing the drama, by beginning in medias res, with Matthew saying “Really? If only I knew, I would’ve been better off to join team Switch. I feel like you guys are ditching me a bit.” Then, crying, he gets up and leaves the room. No one follows him. Sung Hanbin’s perfect face is hard to read -- a mixture of sadness and determination.

WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED?

We jump back in time to find out. The team is having their first rehearsal after T h e G r e a t R e s h u f f l i n g, and they need to redistribute parts.

The team agrees that Yujin should keep the Killing Part -- Kim JiWoong says that Yujin would look yeppo (pretty) in the part.

(Side note: They mention that Ollie was the other one with the Killing Part -- I’m sure the team never had the plan to let him keep it. Poor Ollie. He would have done great with it, for what it’s worth.)

The bigger battle is, who will be main vocal? Yoo Seung Eon, the titanium voiced cutie pie, says: “The main vocalist of this song should lead the choreography rather than showing off vocal skills. I think it’s about getting the feel right. I think Hanbin should be the main vocalist.”

Let’s take some time to let that sink in. Seung Eon, the lowest ranked on the team, whose major claim to fame, really his only claim to fame, is his voice, is giving up the main vocal part. And not just any main vocal part -- a main vocal part that is practically the killing part or center or whatever you want to call it. Why? For the good of the team. He interviews, “Of course I wanted the part. But I thought things would go smoothly if I just switch my position.” Aww! What a sweetheart.

So. Now, what part will he get? Does he want Sub-Vocal 1, with its 41 seconds of singing time?

That’s been Matthew’s position, and after a pause, Seung Eon says, “I think Matthew fits in that part well,” and agrees to take Sub Vocal 2. No one wants to have any more drama today, so the team decides to just go with it rather than have auditions or even discuss it further.

In an interview, Matthew says, “I was thinking of asking [Seung Eon] if he wants to give [sub vocal 1 ] a try. But Sub-Vocal 1 is the part I wanted the most. I thought it’d be weird to tell him to go for it too.” Production asks, “Were you afraid he’d just take it?” Matthew replies, “I was a bit scared because he’s so good.”

The comparison is so obvious and in our face that I barely need to point it out -- but I’ll point it out anyway. Seung Eon gave Hanbin an extremely desirable part because he thought that Hanbin would be better at it. Matthew was scared that Seung Eon would steal “his” part because Seung Eon would be better at it. Their motivations seem diametrically opposed.

Later, the team is practicing singing the song. It’s becoming obvious that Matthew’s part is a bit too high pitched for him, and Seung Eon’s part is a bit too low pitched for him.

Leader Hanbin takes time out of his schedule of taking care of baby bunnies to give an interview, in which he says that the parts were distributed wrong because the team was in a hurry, and he’s “not used to negotiating things.” Then a thousand daisies spring up at his feet, so he picks them and finds some lonely elderly ladies to give them to.

The next day, Hanbin is still trying to think of a non-confrontational solution to the problem (confrontation would startle the flock of white doves that flutter around his head!) when Kim Ji Woong suggests the solution -- that Matthew and Seungeon switch parts. I mean, it’s obviously the solution, if Matthew’s part is too high and Seungeon’s part is too low. Hanbin asks them to try each other’s part, and it sounds so much better.

Hanbin tries to sell it to Matthew, saying that Sub-Vocal 2 has more character than the “basic” main vocal and sub-vocal 1 parts, and Ji Woong points out that Matthew will shine more in a part that suits him better, which will be better for the team, too. Matthew isn’t buying it. In fact, he thinks the whole thing is a hidden camera prank. Everyone says it isn’t, but he doesn’t believe them.

Oh boy. On the one hand, I can understand why Matthew would maybe think it was a hidden camera prank. After all, En Garde did that to Park Gunwook, and maybe Matthew heard about it and they do that kind of thing all the time on the show. Also, he wanted this part so much, it’s almost as if he’s going through the stages of grief -- denial and bargaining and all that. I can understand that. But it’s really hard to watch.

As Matthew begins to think that maybe this is real, he says that he’d be "doomed" if he lost Sub-Vocal 1. He interviews that Seung Eon can do high pitched adlibs, and he himself cannot. He says, “If I become sub-vocalist 2, I’d just be gone! There’s nothing! I can’t do it! I’m just someone passing by. I’d just be like, ‘Hello.’”

Here, Matthew is hampered at least a little by his comparative lack of ability to speak Korean -- he’s explaining himself as best he can, though, and I think his point is clear. He feels like if Seung Eon is on sub-1, and he himself is on Sub-2, no one will notice him.

Matthew is again motivated by anxiety, which is completely in keeping with what we’ve seen of him so far on the show. While I can’t fault him, as this must be the most awful environment for an anxious person --- like, I want to reach for a bottle of diazepam just thinking about what it would be like to be on this show -- it’s also absurd for him to be threatened by Seung Eon. Matthew is ranked in 4th place currently, and yes, that is a drop from where he was in episode 5. But oh my God, Matthew. At the second elimination, you had almost three times the voting points that Seung Eon had. And it’s not as if you’re going to win the audience vote in this song. You’ve got to know that Hanbin is going to win, right? He’s going to smile at the audience, and everyone in the theater will pass out in bliss and wake up cured of all disease, and that’ll be that. So why stress about it?

Also, Matthew, sweetie, what on earth makes you think that the Star Creators at home vote based on how you do in the performances? If that were the case, wouldn’t Takuto have been eliminated in Episode 5? Wouldn’t Lee Yedam still be on the show? Listen to BPR-Noona, ok? You’re doing all this so the audience will like you, but in doing it, you are making the audience not like you. You’re creating this hell for yourself.

Nothing Matthew does is unforgivable or anything. But I’m not going to pretend that this is anything other than what it is. I’m bummed for him, because if he had just switched parts right away, and been sweet about it, it would have worked out so much better for him. As it is, a lot of people in the audience are probably getting really frustrated with him for being unable to accept reality (“I STILL think that this is a hidden camera!” gets pretty irritating after a bit) and for being so selfish in comparison to the saintly Seung Eon.

Second Rehearsal Segment

Ok, so let’s skip to 1:58:42, still in episode 9.

It’s performance day, and Key introduces the Say My Name team. We pan the audience and see signs for Han Yujin, Kim JiWoong, and others, along with many signs for Matthew.

Because it’s kind of fun to be able to spot the signs, you might want to be on the lookout for certain Korean letters/symbols. Seok Matthew’s name written in Korean looks like this: 속매튜 Or you might see it just Matthew, 매튜. The square in the first symbol of Matthew is the M, and the thing that looks like a skinny H is an “ae” sound, and the thing that looks like a capital letter E is the “t” sound. So compare that to Kim Tae Rae 김태래 -- you can see the M in the bottom of the first symbol, the T at the front of the second symbol, and the “ae” at the end of the second two symbols. And that’s your Korean reading lesson of the day!

The point, though, is that the audience is losing its shit over Matthew, which serves to remind us that his anxiety is kind of unfounded.

The team is backstage, ready to perform (they won’t actually perform until episode 10, of course). They look anxious.

We cut to more rehearsal. The team is sitting around uncomfortably. Matthew is saying that he wishes he had gone to the “Switch” team if he was going to have to do Sub-vocal 2. He’s saying it with a big smile on his face, which is something he tends to do -- say something like it’s a joke when it’s serious. No one else is smiling. Hey Matthew, I bet someone on Supercharger would still switch places. Go ask Woongki. He’d be delighted to be sub-vocal 2 on Say My Name.

Thing is, smile or no smile, Matthew is angry. You can tell. And saying this, when it’s no longer possible to switch, is clearly just an attempt to make everyone else feel bad.

That’s an angry face, my friends. It’s not a felony. I’d be angry too. But he IS angry.

And then, Kim JiWoong, with his superior emotional intelligence says, “But Matthew, you need to consider the teammates you’re working with. I don’t think now is the time for you to do only what you want. I think someone who fits the part should do the part.” Oh my god, JiWoong, thank you. It had to be said.

Matthew interviews that what JiWoong said hurt him, and I was thinking, “oh, because you realize that you’re being kind of immature and entitled and you feel bad about it…?” but no. He is sad because he wonders if they all “didn’t believe in [his] ability.”

JiWoong says they have to think of the team. Matthew says that him keeping the part he wants is for the good of the team. Hanbin tells Matthew again, that this isn’t all about Matthew. And Matthew can’t believe that his friend has turned against him, because again, this IS all about Matthew, for Matthew.

It’s hard for Matthew because he feels like he has no choice in the matter, but like, that’s how this always works. When you try out for the Killing Part or Main Vocal and the team votes for someone else, you can’t just decide “well guess I’ll take the part anyway.” And yeah, you had the part, but now you’re losing it. That happens.

I am not being mean on purpose, you guys. I don’t want to pointlessly bash Matthew when he’s making kind of an ass of himself on an international stage. I’m going to take this moment to be profoundly grateful that no one was recording me at those moments in my life that I made a complete ass of myself. Let’s all be profoundly grateful for that, right?

Yoo Seung Eon speaks up, apologizing for not speaking up earlier about wanting the part (not your fault, Seung Eon) and just being sorry in general. Seung Eon’s complete sweetness gets through to Matthew, who is now crying. He says, “Seung Eon, you have no reason to feel sorry. This happened because you’re good.”

The thing is that that’s not totally the case -- Seung Eon is good, of course, but the bigger issue is the pitches, and I wish Matthew understood that. Seung Eon doesn’t sound great as subvocal 2 any more than Matthew sounds great as subvocal 1. Keeping them in their current parts would be like choosing the super tall person to be on your baseball team, and choosing the person who can throw 100 mph to be on your basketball team. You want to put the right person in the right position.

Matthew goes out into the hall to kind of deal with his feelings, which is a good idea. And then he interviews that the reason he wanted to sing Subvocal 1 is that the lyrics were mostly in English, and he wanted his mom to enjoy listening to him sing in English.

Argh, I am trying so hard not to be mean about all this but I mean, I can’t not know that this is a lie. He’s lying.

Consider the following:

Matthew’s first reaction on hearing he was going to lose the song wasn’t, “oh no, my mom…” but “I’m doomed.” In what world does missing out on a special thing you wanted to do for your mom equate to being doomed?

Matthew said in an interview, “If I become sub-vocalist 2, I’d just be gone! There’s nothing! I can’t do it! I’m just someone passing by. I’d just be like, ‘Hello.’” That’s all unequivocally about wanting center time. There is no second interpretation of this comment.

Matthew is very close to Hanbin and fairly close to JiWoong at this point -- if this mom thing was true, he would have felt comfortable talking to them about it.

Now, the “doomed” comment -- I can see one interpretation of this that isn’t just about wanting center time to avoid elimination. It might have been a reference to Matthew’s difficulty in learning Korean lyrics -- he may have been worried about having to learn the lyrics to a whole new part. But if so, say so! That’s a valid concern -- why lie? What is that?

Another issue is that Matthew’s characterization of Sub-Vocal 1 as being “half English” is a massive exaggeration. SV-1 has one line fully in English (“can I be your boy? Can I love you more?”) but otherwise is mostly in Korean.

Here’s the complete lyrics that SV-1 sings (not including parts where they all sing or where SV1 and SV2 sing together).

They’re both mostly Korean. Even that line at the beginning of SV-1, “Eeny, Meeny 이제서야 Your turn/ Let me let me know 말해줘 Baby” -- Eeny meeny isn’t real English and having that be mixed in with so much Korean, your ear stops distinguishing English lyrics and sort of just hears sounds, with the “baby” at the end, you know? It’s not this overwhelming English sound that you hear.

So yeah, the mom excuse is just a lie, and for me, that’s the part that really bums me out, because I want to like Matthew. I kind of naturally root for the North Americans, because I am one, you know? And if he had just said, “I’m so sorry and embarrassed I made this uncomfortable for everyone. I should have been more understanding about why we had to change parts. I don’t have any excuse, I was just so anxious about everything” -- if he said something like that, I’d forgive him immediately because again, the pressure they’re under is absurd. It’s natural to feel that way. Just own it. But instead, he lied.

And one reason that I say that Matthew is not being evil edited is that the show seems to be presenting this obviously false explanation as true.

Look at the screenshot above. He’s talking about how Sub-Vocal 1 has so many words in English, and the on-screen images are backing him up. What they’re NOT showing is the lyrics in SV-1 that are in Korean, which is a lot of lyrics, nor are they showing the lyrics from SV-2 that are in English. They show him crying while talking about his mom and they play stirring violin music the whole time. The show is sympathizing with him.

I’m still not saying that he’s a bad person or that any of this is unforgivable. He’s a human being and it’s natural to be defensive and anxious and all these things. It’s cool if you forgive him. Just face reality, is all I’m saying.

Anyway.

Ok, so we see the five trainees doing their intro bit on stage, and as I expected, they’re clearly doing a high teen concept, complete with a school setting on stage and all that. But we’re not really going to see the performance yet -- we’ll have to wait for episode 10.

Final Segment

We’ll skip to episode 10, at 49:30. Key introduces the team again, and the boys come up to introduce themselves.

We see Lee Hwanhee in the audience for a picosecond, holding up this sign:

I think it says “Ji Woong-ee hyung”.

The team says they want to be your first love -- they’re team Say Yes! Then Key makes Han Yujin say “noona I love you” over and over and I want to call Child Protective Services.

Then they ask Matthew about his rehearsal experience, and we go into flashback mode. This isn’t just a flashback, this is a flashback to what we’ve already seen -- the team explaining that he’s not a solo artist, and him going to sit down in a lobby area. The on screen captioning is again defending him, saying “he understands his teammates, but he can’t calm down.”

Then the on screen captioning says “one hour earlier”, but I’m almost certain that they really mean one hour later, or else nothing makes sense. MNET, can you just tell the story in order and not jump around so much for no reason?

Hanbin gives his team a plate of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies (baked goods spontaneously generate whenever he laughs) and tells them to take a 10 minute break while he checks in on Matthew, who is hanging back.

It says Soek Matthew on the left, and Sung Hanbin on the right. (By the way, the little symbol that looks kind of like a ^ symbol, that’s the S in Korean, so on the left that’s the S for Soek and on the right it’s the S in Sung. As a reminder, the square is an M and the E is a T and the H is an “ae” sound.)

Anyway, Hanbin is checking in on Matthew, who he senses is having a hard time. Matthew denies that anything is wrong, but he’s obviously kind of sulking. They try to rehearse together as a team, but Matthew is still not feeling it.

JiWoong interviews that he feels bad for doing what he had to do, that he’s not sure how to treat Matthew from now on, and that this has been hard on him too. JiWoong has the necessary emotional intelligence to do the hard work between friends, but that doesn’t mean he likes it. Look, I’m happily partnered and am not looking to date anyone else, but my friends, that is some boyfriend material right there. Being too passive to the point that you can’t even communicate about what’s on your mind just allows things to fester. Nothing against Hanbin, who is truly trying his best and doing a decent job, but JiWoong is the hero of this story. Find yourself a person who can communicate like that.

We cut to dance rehearsal with the psycho dance teachers, who ask Hanbin and Matt about their bromance. Turns out they never actually performed together on the show. Leader Hanbin shoos away a herd of passing unicorns, then explains that the group has been training for a week, but that they just changed some parts today.

The dancing doesn’t go well -- the judge yells at them because the mood "isn’t cute" -- especially Matthew, who isn’t “managing” his facial expression. They try again, and Matthew continues to sulk. The dance teacher reminds them that they have to not let any conflict between them show on stage. They try a third time and it still doesn’t quite work.

Matthew’s interview comes in like a voice over, narrating over the scene, saying that he feels bad that he made the mood like this and got his teammates in trouble. He says, “I realized that I can’t keep being like this. At this rate, I might screw up our performance.” Good, Matthew, good start. You’re on your way! Keep it up.

The fourth time through, they manage to pull it together.

Later at the dorms, JiWoong goes to visit Matthew. JiWoong is wearing what appears to be pinstriped pajamas. Of course he is. JiWoong asks if Matthew is ok, then adds, of course you’re not. Matthew is still held back a little bit by not being 100% fluent in Korean, so it’s hard for him to explain his exact feelings, but it’s something similar to betrayal. You know, that feeling that Woongki and Seo Won and Ollie and Takuto probably felt when you voted them out of the team? I mean, just sayin’, there’s plenty of betrayal going around, and it’s probably better to count your blessings.

JiWoong says, “I considered all day whether or not I should talk to you. In any case, I should apologize to you since the parts were changed [so late].” Matthew says he understands why JiWoong did what he did and that his (Matthew’s) reasons for wanting SV-1 were selfish. (We don’t see any further mention of the Mom/English lyrics story.)

JiWoong says he needs to be a good hyung (older brother figure) to Matthew, but it really goes beyond that -- he’s the embodiment of forgiveness and patience. He said what he needed to say and now he doesn’t hold a grudge. Next time someone pisses you off, think, WWJWD? And unless that thing is showing your nipples, do that thing. I mean, unless it’s a good time to show your nipples. I don’t know your life.

Matthew commits to Sub-vocal 2 and begins working on the lyrics. They’re tricky for him, which backs up my theory that part of his issue was fear at having to learn a new set of lyrics.

We see the team rehearsing and they all seem to be getting along much better. At dress rehearsal they do a great job, and Matthew is all smiles. The judges cheer. Matthew interviews that he has finally realized that the team is the most important thing. Good!

Honestly, I really can forgive Matthew for all of this, but the whole Mom/English lyrics bit was really… icky. Just come out and say it, guy -- say, “I wanted the big part because I’m anxious because my rank fell a lot from 2nd to 4th and I’m worried that I won’t debut after all and it’s all I can think about.” That’s fine, that’s a normal way to feel. Sigh. But I guess he thought that the audience at home wouldn’t forgive him for that so he made up the Mom lie?

Anyway, it’s finally time!

The performance begins.

My take: Well, the thing is, I’m not really into this kind of song -- new jack swing lite, I guess you could call it -- but I try to critique songs within their genre, and for a song of this genre, it’s ok. It’s cute. It doesn’t grate or irritate.

What’s more relevant is that the boys do a really good job with it. Their dancing is lively, their singing sounds great, their on-stage chemistry is convincing, and while I know they had an MR, I think a lot of their vocals were live and really, it was good. The staging didn’t compete with the performance, and their outfits made them all look cute. It all came together really well. The part where they all say their own names at the end is really cute, too.

I think that Matthew and Seung Eon did the best job in terms of stage presence. Weirdly, Sung Hanbin’s smile didn’t really convince me -- I saw stress on his perfect face, rather than cute happiness. He's still preternaturally charming. Han Yujin seemed to be holding back, but I’ve always thought that about him. And Kim JiWoong seemed a little uncomfortable. That’s just how they seemed to me and maybe I’m the only one who thinks that. I still think all five of these guys are super talented and I can see why someone would like them and vote for them.

After I wrote all that, I showed the performance to my fella and asked him what he thought, and he said that he thought the “chaotic teenager” energy they gave off suited the song. He picked out Matthew as the best one, picked out JiWoong as not fitting in (he said that the rest looked like they were confessing a crush, while JiWoong looked like he was promising a good lay), and said that Hanbin looked really exhausted. I swear that I didn’t tell him about the tension in the group, or that JiWoong was known for doing sexy concepts! He just picked up on that anyway. He’s not really into vocals or dance specifically so he was mostly judging based off of vibe.

I *am* into vocals, and I just want to say again how good of a job I think Yoo Seung Eon did. In other performances, I found his voice to be a tiny bit too thin and screechy for my taste, but he sounded much better here. I think he’s quite a talent and I’d love to see how his singing continues to improve as he matures and gets even more training. I actually think he’s ready to debut now but I also don’t think he’ll make top 9, so we’ll have to wait for the Yuehua boy group coming in, IDK, 2024. Seriously, I’m so looking forward to it!

Am I sad that TaeRae wasn’t the main vocal of this song? Yes. Yes I am. But I don’t hold it against them. Hanbin sang well, especially since he considers himself a dancer first.

Congratution on your gradution!

The Edit I think the edits on these five mission stages will all be kind -- we’re at the point when the show wants us to like every performance. Mostly they just show the performance, without a ton of instant replays or reactions, but they did have to interrupt a few times to see the audience losing their shit for Matthew. They even threw in a shot of Key smiling. When the song is over, they really dwell on the audience reaction. The audience is LOSING THEIR SHIT.

Afterwards Backstage, the boys are really happy and proud. Then Key walks by and says “you remind me of me when I was younger,” which is probably a moment that they’ll take out of the memory bank and stroke like a soft blanket on sad days.

We don’t find out who came in last, which was also the case for En Garde -- MNET jiggery fuckery again.

And who do you think wins the audience vote? Come on, take a wild guess! Was it... maybe... Sung Hanbin? Yes, indeed, it was -- with 826 points (so Haruto still has the highest individual score). It’s this Hanbin's first time coming in first -- he lost to Hui in Love Me Right and lost to Zhang Hao in Tomboy.

Am I crazy, or does there still seem to be a bit of awkwardness between Hanbin and Matthew? JiWoong talked it out with Matthew and cleared the air, but I think Matthew and Hanbin need to have a similar conversation at some point soon, or there will be awkwardness in their friendship for a while to go.

Superjail #9: “Dream Machine” | November 23, 2008 - 11:45PM | S01E08

Everyone say hello to Superjail! This episode is a fun one, and I consider it “nice” as well. In this one, the Warden starts having a very scary nightmare that the inmates are going to overthrow the prison. So, he decides to attach his Wonderful Wubulous dream machine to all the inmates' heads in order to monitor their psyches. The Warden goes crazier and crazier, in part due to the mischievous twins being bad with it. The episode more-or-less devolves into a big old wacky dream-world battle, with dreams within-dreams, animation style changes (at least one, anyway!) and a fun ending that I couldn’t believe I forgot all about.

The Warden’s suspicions extend to his staff, featuring a memorable moment where he looks at Jailbot’s dreams, who just wishes he were human and that the Warden was his dad. Right? That’s what happens, I think. I didn’t take very good notes for this episode and then I forgot I didn’t actually finish this write-up, so I’m going off the dome for this, one day later. Anyway, Jailbot’s dream is in CGI. Jarred dreams he’s a big guy and that the Warden is little. …A little GAY that is! THE TWO DUDES KISS! Cool!! Alice’s dreams that the Warden is a bug and says “quit bugging me”. Alice's lines are a part of the show that I routinely forget to talk about as being good. Allow that last sentence to get me off the hook about that for a while.

The Dream Machine is based on The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T and the Women, a film I remember watching during the pandemic. It was a time when I literally would watch 2-4 movies in a single day, and I remember very little from it other than the iconic costumes and sets that I actually remember from before I saw the movie, when I'd randomly come across stills for the movie and think "that movie looks great. I should watch it", so it’s almost like I never watched it.

There’s probably a second-or-third-hand Luis Buñuel reference I could have jammed in here somewhere. Did you know that every time a person has a dream that is revealed to be inside of another dream it’s a reference to The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie? Probably not really, but every time it happens in a movie, somebody on IMDB will edit the trivia section (under “connections”) saying it’s an intentional reference to this. At this moment, nobody has done this for the Superjail episode “Dream Machine”. Please don't!

This is a fun one, but I regretted not doing druuuuuuuuugs for it. I should have eaten one of those dollar bills covered in fentanyl that cops love so much. I wish I drank a big thing of poison for this episode. It would’ve been so badass.

I haven't, but I MIGHT! I think I have a couple. Every single comic book ever made is easily findable online, so maybe I'll give those a look soon, and MAYBE I will refer to them in some context during my next SPACE GHOST WEEK.

It is probably nice of me to remind everyone that when this calendar year of Adult Swim reviews is over, I will be tackling the 1999 episodes of Space Ghost, then when I finish 2009 I'll probably do the GameTap episodes. Haven't figured out what I'll do after that, but maybe it'll be nice?

A/N; I’ve wanted to do this for a while now, and with a more edited version, and with a bit of encouragement from @beardedhotchh I’m doing this, (Genuinely right now, I’m freaking out inside but hey! What could go wrong!) so I’m proud to present my original story ‘You’re on Your own Kid’!

A Normal Day

22nd May

It was supposed to be a pretty standard day. Pretty normal at least for me.

Wake up, get dressed, have breakfast, brush teeth, and go do something productive.

Except for the one difference, today is that I went down to the village.

When I went down, Father forced me to have a chaperone. I, of course, argued back saying that I don't need a chaperone.

We ended up making a compromise.

Father made me have a chaperone, but I got a choice of who did said job.

He sighed learning the chaperone I had chosen was Xander.

Xander and I had been friends since we were kids. At the time of his birth, his father was my father's right-hand man. His Guard of Honor. His lead Knight.

I groan every time Xander mentions this story as he adds a ridiculous list of names after it.

So, as we approached the village, I was surprised to find Jameson, the Blacksmith's son, sitting hunched over on a rock, watching the sight before him intently.

"What are you doing?" I ask, walking forward and tapping him on the shoulder.

He drops his stuff and picks it up as I mutter a very bashful 'sorry'.

"Drawing," He blurts out as I smile.

I've always thought Jameson was a great artist. A few years ago, he even painted me and it's now one of the only few paintings of me looking formal.

Xander jogs up to us and gives a small, acknowledging nod to Jameson and he replies with a small 'hello'.

We stand there in awkward silence for a few, very uncomfortable, minutes, just waiting for someone to break the silence.

Before, all three of us had been such good friends. Sadly though, as we got older, we drifted apart as we grew and had more responsibilities to our roles in the kingdom, mine ultimately being the next ruler of the kingdom. That’s at least the story others got when asking why I wasn’t friends with Jameson anymore.

Eventually, Jameson was the one to break the silence.

"So. . . Kaitlyn, what are you and Xander doing down here?" He said.

I looked down at my shoes and cleared my throat before replying.

"I wanted to visit the village, and my father forced me to take a chaperone, so I chose Xander," I said, even though it wasn't the truth.

"Hey! You said you just wanted my delightful company to join you," Xander retorted.

“You know I only say that to get you to come with me,” Jameson and I laugh after I say it as Xander stands there and pouts.

“Fine then,” Xander says “I guess I won’t teach you how to sword fight anymore,” I look around, the smile dropping from my face as the puppy dog eyes come out.

Jameson just laughs more as Xander has to try and deal with resisting the eyes and when he finally says yes, I pick up my skirts and start to skip down the path to the centre of the village.

When I heard the boys start to run to catch up behind me yelling ‘Kaitlyn! Kaitlyn wait up!’ I got butterflies. Especially hearing it from Jameson.

I eventually slowed down as I approached the main stream of people and the boys caught up.

I laughed a lot for what had felt like a long time.

After a while of running around the village and just relaxing, I felt as if I were floating. I knew I would eventually have to go back to the castle, but I was having so much fun.

At one point we stopped by Jameson’s so then he could go put his stuff in his room, while I gave a letter to his dad to give to Jameson when we got home.

So, when I finally got home, I waited until the time was right to sneak out and run down to the lake.

My favourite place to read.

I sat there for a while, reading, and I felt the voices in my head grow stronger.

‘The day your father dies will be the day you become pregnant with your spouse's baby.’

The chant had been going on through my head all day long, growing stronger with every thought.

I’ve had the voices since I was born, as when my mother was in labour, she almost died. My parents ended up making a deal with a sorceress to save me and my mother, but from what happened, voices now cloud my thoughts. Sometimes they get so extreme, I do things like scream in my sleep.

As I read the voices get louder, and as it does, it gets harder to concentrate, so I try to get up, but as I get a few metres away, I bump into what feels like a wall, but the voices are too loud at that point so I collapse into the person's arms.

The last thing I hear is the words ‘Kaitlyn, come on wake up! I don’t know what’s strong but I really care about you. . . and you just can’t die on me Kaitlyn!’ as the darkness consumes me, the chant still goes through my head.

‘The day your father dies will be the day you become pregnant with your spouse's baby.’
