"Just... Can you help him? I heard you were the best doctor in town." - Nathaniel to Achilles who he didn't know yet, showing up with his latest victim who's almost drained of his blood but not dead yet because Nate caught himself at the last minute
Achilles wasn't in the mood. It was late, he had a long day, and it was pouring rain outside, all he wanted was a drink and sleep as much as possible. So when someone knocked at his door so late at night, he didn't want to answer. He did not answer at first, but the person was insisted, so he had no other choice but open the door.
The demigod wasn't really impressed by what was in front of him. As a doctor, a surgeon, he was used of seeing people bloody or passed out. At first glance, he thought it was just a fight gone wrong, nothing special here, but the more he looked and the more he understood that he was wrong. Looking at the man talking, he could hear distress into his voice, and what looked like fear too. All Achilles did was nodded and opening his door to let the two men come inside.
It's only once the injured man on the table that he saw the extent of his wound. First, the poor man was weak, and cold. Achilles slapped him multiple times to have some reaction from him, but nothing, he was unresponsive. He was still bleeding from his neck, so Achilles applied pressure on it to stop the haemorrhage. The other man was pacing in the room, repeating again and again something, but Achilles wasn't listening to him. Taking the man's pulse, he noticed how slow it was, which wasn't normal.
❛Is he alive? Is he going to be okay?❜ The man asked for the fourth or fifth time maybe, with anxiety in his voice, still pacing in the room. Achilles sighed and rolled his eyes.
❛I don't know yet, I need silence to work. So, can you stop sulking, please?❜
❛I'm not sulking. I'm just... watching.❜
❛Yeah, sure. Well, go watch from afar, I need space.❜
Achilles wasn't in the mood, that was clear, so he wasn't in the mood to be polite. He was never when he was in doctor's mode. While trying to figure out what was wrong with the patient, he finally noticed. The man had been bitten, partially drained of his blood. Frowning, the young man looked at the other man who was still pacing in the room, –visibly he was unable to stay still which was giving Achilles a headache right now– and noticed something he should have notice sooner. He cursed himself for being so slow, although he blamed it on the time of night and his need for sleep. The man was covered in blood, but what was noticeable was the blood all around his mouth. He was the reason the patient was drained of his blood for sure.
❛Your name?❜
❛Hm? Nathaniel...Nate.❜
❛He lost a lot of blood, Nathaniel.❜
❛Can you save him, please? What can we do?❜
❛Hold his hand and see him into the next life.❜
Nathaniel was confused by those words. Finally, he understood their meaning; it was too late. He stopped himself too late, and the man was dying now. Distress came to him as a wave, and he had to control himself to not cry in front of a stranger and a dead man, but he couldn't control his shaking. Without a word, he came closer and did just what Achilles told him; he held the poor man's hand, until he couldn't feel his pulse and he was as cold as ice.
❛Was the feast worth it?❜ Achilles asked suddenly, which surprised Nathaniel. At first, he was puzzled, until the doctor show him his mouth, making him understand about the blood still there.
❛...No, it wasn't...❜ He admitted, his voice full of tears.
He looked away, and Achilles could be sure he was wiping some tears, but he didn't want to ask. The demigod looked at Nathaniel in silence, studying him the best he could. Was he scared? Yes, a little. After all, what happened to that man could potentially happen to him too now. But a part of him told him it wouldn't. Achilles wasn't a stranger to creatures, beasts, or monsters, as a demigod, he saw his share of them, in his past life, right now, he didn't remember any of them. Not even his best friend, who was a werewolf. But deep down, he knew the man wasn't human –which wasn't something bad, himself wasn't human after all. He did not know what he was, though.
Due to some dreams he had, about monsters and all, Achilles researched every species he could, and silently he was trying to find what was the young man. A vampire? Probably. But he knew vampires could save their victim easily by gibing them their blood, which Nathaniel didn't seem able to do, so that wasn't the answer. He was still thinking when Nathaniel stood up, clear his throat and tried to smile.
❛I am sorry I disturbed you for nothing, Doctor.❜
❛Just call me Achilles.❜
❛Alright. I must leave now.❜
❛No.❜ Achilles said, without thinking, which surprised both of them. He did not know why his answer so quickly, and by the negation, when the perfect answer would have been 'yes leave, I don't want to be your next victim.' Truth is, Achilles was intrigued by the man. He wanted to know more about him. A man who seemed remorseful after killing someone couldn't be so bad, could he? Shaking his head, Achilles pointed at the dead man on the table. ❛We need to bury him. I won't do that alone. That should be your burden, not mine. So you take him and I take a shovel.❜
Achilles could tell that Nathaniel wasn't used to be given orders like that, because he did not move at first. He stayed where he was, and it's only when he saw the demigod at the door, with a shovel and his jacket, that he understood that he was serious. The next hour, the two of them did everything to give proper burial to that poor man, before going back to Achilles' house. Back there, he served a glass of bourbon for him and Nathaniel, a glass well deserved.
❛You won't leave the house, not tonight at least.❜ Achilles said, and once again, this surprised both of them.
❛Are you going to give me to the authority for what I did?❜
❛Are you going to kill me if I say yes?❜ Nathaniel was taken aback. As a Prince of the seas, he wasn't used to be talked to like that. But he couldn't really blame him, for Achilles did not know he was a prince, but he doubted that even if he knew it, it would change his language just for him. Achilles shrugged and sighed. ❛What are you exactly?❜
❛... A siren.❜
❛Ah, the vampire of the sea. It was my second guess.❜
❛And you? What are you? You seem to know a lot about others species.❜
❛I'm just curious.❜ Achilles answered with a smile before winking at Nathaniel. ❛You come from far away, I know the sea is at three hours in horse from here. So I can't let you go, I can't risk any more death tonight. Tomorrow I'll bring you myself to the shore.❜
❛Is that... an order?❜ Nathaniel asked, seemingly offended.
❛Well, I'm the one in charge here, and because of you someone died on my table. So yes, that's an order.❜
Nathaniel couldn't help but laugh a little to Achilles confidence. He couldn't tell it wasn't attractive, and he started to look at the young man a different way. Although, before he didn't have the time to studying the man the way he wanted, now he had all the time he needed. Achilles left and Nathaniel decided to take a look at the room. A lot of books, about mythology, history, arts, medicine, magic, but one of them caught his attention more than another.
❛Poetry.❜ He said while taking one of Achilles' book, when the latter came back with dry clothes for him.
❛Do you have a problem with poetry?❜
❛No, not at all. I'm just... surprise, I suppose.❜
❛A surgeon cannot love poetry?❜ Achilles asked with amusement, and Nathaniel just shrugged. ❛I'm more than just a doctor. I'm also an illusionist and a bard.❜
❛A bard? So, when you're not operating, you're singing songs? Or are you doing both at the same time?❜
❛Are you always so impertinent?❜
Both of them laughed at that. For a moment, the room fell silent, but it was quite enjoyable. It was as if what happened two hours sooner didn't happen, except for the blood on the table to remind them of it. Nathaniel still felt guilty, for sure, but Achilles' presence was enough to soothe it a bit. After a few minutes of looking each other silently, as if the world outside wasn't there, Achilles shook his head and sighed, going to his bed.
❛There is a spare room there, feel free to use it. If ever you kill me in my sleep, I will haunt you forever.❜
