Writer’s game: first sentences!
Tagged by @poppypopp because @fogsblue didn’t know my tumblr (how shocking!)
Rules: post the first sentence of your last ten fics. If you haven’t written ten fics, share as many first-sentences as you have.
I have more than 10 fics, so I've filtered to completed on AO3 and worked back from there!
1: All Dressed Up Fashav and Nil had cheered with their fellow Tenakth when news came that he was to return to the Sundom.
2: One for Sorrow, add Two for Joy “Are you the witch of the woods?”
3: A Bloom Amongst the Bloodshed There is a quiet, as dense and as thick as the deepest groves of the forest when the blood and the burn of the battle is spent.
4: Kisses, Cookies and a Very Merry Christmas Hekarro woke slowly, and stretched as best as he could, while the pleasant weight of his partner pressed him down into the couch.
5: Flowers in the Glade... The journey back across their lands had been gruelling, and Kotallo’s pre-occupation with the outlander had not gone unnoticed - all of the soldiers persistently teasing him - only for it to roll off of his back unnoticed half the time.
6: Heated Dreams Hekarro smiled contentedly, certain he was dreaming as he replayed the events of the day.
7: The Chief and His Champion It was almost inevitable, most would say - that when all was said and done Aloy would return to Memorial Grove and hope to make her life there.
8: Finding Fortune... It wasn’t long after Nemesis has been eliminated, that Aloy had brought Kotallo to the gauntlet runs - he’d been increasingly bored and restless after they’d eliminated the last of the rebel leaders.
9: This Old House Aloy hadn’t questioned her luck when the modest brick townhouse placed in a quiet suburb had arrived in her inbox on a quiet Saturday morning, the email blank with only the link and the subject line bolded with a red priority flag.
10: The Fall of Paradise Things had seemed so bright last year Ted thought absently, he had absolved himself of ending the world with a few quick commands from his consoles, watching through the holo-meeting as the Alphas slowly died in front of him and the Apollo protocol was relegated to a digital graveyard.
I didn’t tag anyone - because I think they’ve all been tagged already :D

Against the Lightning
I've finally finished uploading this fic, which I've been writing on and off since around April last year... So glad it's over, and I had to draw something to commemorate it. Thanks to all who have read it and waited (very patiently) for its completion!

Chapter 2 for "A Spirit's Flight" is up!
"The balmy weather of autumn had finally given way to winter chill, brought in from the cooling north seas. It blew over the peaks surrounding Valleymeet, cascading down its slopes and weaving its way through the Spiritlands’ dense forests below. Those living in the Embrace would experience its bite soon, but the many beasts of the wilder territories had already taken shelter from the coming season’s icy grip. Thus, game grew scarcer, as it always did every year, while evergreen trees boasted their viridescent leaves that would remain all throughout the heralding season..."
Drew up a scene to accompany the new chapter! You can check it out by clicking the link to my AO3 on my pinned post :D
PLEASE DO NOT REPOST! REBLOG ONLY!

Rost CANONICALLY went to the forbidden west, were told this in zero dawn when Teersa finally tells us his story, WHY are there not more fics where that’s explored? Where people in the west know him? I would kill for that

gray areas and expectations [hfw, aloy/talanah]
Post-Horizon Forbidden West, ~5.5K words, rated M, complete
I feels too good tonight to let it end. It feels…safe, after an entire day of battle-thrill, of fighting side-by-side. Watching each other’s back like that is a kind of tenderness that Aloy understands—one that can be given and known without words to make it all complicated.
Turns out, so is this. And Aloy doesn’t want to stop.
Aloy lets herself get carried away, and ends up out of her depth.

Tag Game
Tagged by @poppypopp, thank you!
1) How many works do you have on AO3? 63!
2) What’s your total AO3 word count? 334,970
3) What fandoms do you write for? Mostly Horizon Zero Dawn, I've dabbled in DND:HAT, Stardew Valley & The Magnus Archives and will likely indulge in BG3 when I finish my playthrough
4) What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
1 - Beckoning Death, Brushing Lips
2 - Illicit Lute-y
3 - Year One
4 - A knife in the sand, a punch in the heart
5 - Beads & Paint
5) Do you respond to comments? I try to, but a lot of the time I either reply in my head or cn't think of anything to say :'(
6) What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Fingerprints On the Soul, it was written for an angst night in Nilysium and still hurts my feelings to this day. Prompt fulfilled!
7) What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Every one of my Aloy/Hekarro Omegaverse series has a happy ending (hurhurhur) but the happiest is probably Finding Fortune, Racing with Fate because it was explicitly written to be nice to the blorbos.
8) Do you get hate on fics? Not really? There's a couple of comments that were borderline, but I just removed them.
9) Do you write smut? If so, what kind? In most, and a mixture of everything tbh - I just want people to have good time - though I'm not above making them wait for it!
10) Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? Lots of thoughts, and I enjoy reading them - but I've only ever written a Horizon/Pacific Rim oneshot.
11) Have you ever had a fic stolen? Nope!
12) Have you ever had a fic translated? Nobody told me if they did!
13) Have you ever co-written a fic before? I've co-written a one-shot with a great author who needed a hand with the smut portion of their work. It was really great to try and merge our styles!
14) What’s your all time favorite ship? I don't know that I could ever choose - Bones/booth were my OGs and I still love them. Current faves would be Nil/Fashav, Aloy/Hekarro and Astarion/Halsin in BG3
15) What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Beads and Paint, my first every Kotaloy fic but I never really thought about where it was going when I started.
16) What are your writing strengths? I feel like I do well with description, and I'm very confident in my smut!
17) What are your writing weaknesses? For many years I fully avoided any dialogue ever, I've grown a huge amount in the last 2-3 years though so probably just my struggle to concentrate and put words to paper.
18) Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I'm only comfortable embarassing myself in one language at a time :D
19) First fandom you wrote for? Maximum Ride, in a notebook I kept hidden in my bedside drawer. Max and Fang were pre-teen crack for my little shipping heart.
20) Favorite fic you’ve written? Probably Aporkalyptic or my two knife marriage fics in Horizonverse, nobody else rates them as highly, but I'll always be the first to laugh at my own jokes :')
And that's me done. I'm tagging @eclectus & @wandereringray No pressure though!

5 + 1 Fic Friday Roundup: Is Anyone Going to Adopt that Kid?
Some adoption and/or found family stories.
Judgement and Justice (AO3) - "Hitoshi Shinsou is surrendered to foster care by his single mother at the age of five. At the age of six, he decides to run away with his 'villainous' foster brother. From there, we meet a runaway Todoroki with projection issues to rival a Trans Siberian Orchestra concert, a tired analyst in a questionable government organization trying to figure out just who needs to get fired and where, a panicking Pro Hero trying to locate his son, who wasn't supposed to be in foster care in the first place, and a very, very annoyed underground hero who's going to steal a child from SOME hero, one way or another."
Crash Into Me (AO3) - "Kara is cold and scared and her little baby cousin Kal-el won't stop wiggling, but they have no choice but to keep moving or the DEO, the government entity that captured them shortly after they crashed on this planet, will catch them and punish them for trying to escape. And then Leonard Snart and Mick Rory, driving by, very nearly crash into her life."
The Children of Ullia (AO3) - "In a time where Aloy accepted Ullia's offer to take her as a daughter, Ullia had already taken one child of the East to be her own. A young man she met in Sunstone Rock."
Proud Immortal Parent's Way (AO3) - "A story in which Shang Qinghua gets the chance to raise the protagonist from square one! This causes a lot of things that never made it to the final draft of PIDW! And now there was a bunch of family drama in the Mobei Clan and some drama with Huan Hua that he and Binghe got dropped into, but hey, at least he wasn't going to be a scum villain anymore. And the cute baby is a plus!"
dry as a bone (AO3) - "Din Djarin didn’t set out to build a clan, but the child cooed and whined and telekinetically shoved their way into his heart. A clan of two is more than enough to fill that old bounty hunter’s heart, even if the womp rat doesn’t exactly take up much space. Said womp rat isn’t the only kid with special abilities, though, and every child deserves a chance to grow up safe and loved."
Bonus: Dad Bane AU (AO3) - "When Cad Bane is rescued from an ambush by a small Twi'lek street urchin, he does not foresee how much their meeting will change his life."

Fic Prompts: Snippet Monday
Some weeks ago, @sparguscityangel and I were discussing the world map in Jak 2, and it occurred to me that at least one character refers to the northeastern area of the main continent as The Wasteland as well as the island to the west. And in the Jak and Daxter franchise, plot holes are just writer worldbuilding opportunities. So we started tossing around the idea of there being two or three separate communities of Wastelanders, all in different environments, because "wasteland" doesn't automatically mean "desert". And we thought "maybe they're all loosely affiliated and the leaders of the clans meet up every once in a while". For context, my idea of the other clans was Longstump Clan, down where the swamp used to be in TPL, and Foothills Clan, which lives around what used to be the Spider Caves and the base of Snowy Mountain. All this then got incorporated into Adopted Dadmas au with a pinch of Spy Tess. (That bit comes tomorrow)
"Fine young gun you've got there, Wolf."
The chief of the Longstump settlement took a drag on his intricately carved pipe and nodded to where Jak was climbing up one of the old pillars to watch for Marauder activity below. The old man snorted as the boy turned an unnecessarily elaborate flip to make it to the top.
"What is he now, eighteen? Nineteen?"
"Sixteen, by count of his last physical," Damas answered, sparing the boy a glance. A faint smile tugged at his cheek. "Sixteen, impudent, and always climbing, that one."
Sal puffed out a smoky chuckle. "No wonder the Foothills band likes him."
He leaned back and shook out the soft hide vest and tunic common to the inland Wastelanders, rattling with wooden beads and Precursor metal. His hands were wrinkled, and his face creased; Sal was old enough to be Damas’s father, but his hair was the same deep teak it was in his youth, tied back in neat plaits.
"At the rate he's going, he'll have no trouble when it's time for his Proving," Sal observed.
"Hm."
The Proving. That was what the Wastelanders of Longstump called the trials to usher newcomers into their ranks: a three day test of strength against metalheads in the basin, with an amulet awarded for each day survived.
The Foothill Wastelanders called their test Running the Spire. Young warriors or outsiders wishing to join had to race up a dangerous trail on the border of the Marauder homelands, without being caught by Marauders or dangerous wildlife, and infiltrate Snowy Mountain to bring back a piece of Marauder armor.
By comparison, the Arena was a far more controlled environment, with more rules. There was a strange irony in that.
Damas couldn't have said why the swell of pride he felt was so overwhelmingly strong, but he didn't bother to hide it.
"Jak has already passed the first two trials of his Proving," he corrected the Longstump chief with a full smile.
"I predict that before winter, he will join the warriors' councils as an equal."
Sal took another puff of his pipe and shook his head in wonder. "Two amulets and he's sixteen. Shee-oo! You dune-wolves don't do anything by halves, do you? You must be so proud."
Damas looked up. "I am," he murmured, smiling.
From the top of the pillar, Jak seemed to feel his stare. He looked down and made a questioning face. Damas snorted and signed up at him, "No moncaw-business! I'm not stealing light eco from the temple if you fall down and break both your arms!"
Sal laughed out loud beside him. "Ah! I remember telling my daughters that all the time!"
Yvelle, matriarch of the Foothills Clan finally looked up from the trade agreements the three had been exchanging. "Sometimes you just have to let them learn the hard way," she offered.
Damas made a face. "Can't. He convinced an Oracle in Haven city to teach him how to battle-shift -- like the Sages used to in the history books -- and now half the time he just regenerates whatever damage he's done to himself. I tell you, if my hair wasn't already white..."
"Your boy is a War Sage?" Sal sputtered, choking on smoke.
Yvelle's eyes glittered with interest. "No wonder he's half done with his Proving already. Hey, if you need a break, just send him up to the Caves. We'll tire him out."
"In your dreams, Yvelle," Damas scoffed. "Get your own kid: Jak's mine!"
"Worth a shot," the woman joked. "But seriously, my Lurker Wastelanders are asking about taking back their ancestral city in Frosthold. Loooooot of Marauders up there. We could use a War Sage."
Damas leaned back and searched the sky for a moment before his eyes landed on the Day-Star. He frowned. "Let's deal with subverting the apocalypse first. Then we'll see how far I'm willing to let my boy travel unaccompanied."
Of course, Jak would likely have all three amulets by then, and thus be considered old enough to go where he wanted. But Damas wasn't fond of the idea. He'd lost one son, why tempt fate by letting another wander far from home without supervision?
