I was reading Chapter 42 of @pikapeppa's fic Becoming Whole and I was goddamn sucker-punched by how cute the scene was where the GAIA gang has a sleepover in GAIA's dome. Everything about it is so good and it ticks all the boxes for heartwarming and wistful and emotionally rich while still being in-character and well-written. Not a single moment felt contrived or formulaic, and to be honest, that is what the entire rest of the fic is like, as well; Everything reads so naturally for the setting and the characters that I never once have a problem with suspending my disbelief.
And the dialogue is clever as hell! And not just in a funny way (because there's tons of hilarious conversations), but also in a way that adds emotional depth to scenes.
Like, [brief spoiler] Aloy and Beta talking about how Elisabet would be proud that both clones of her are following in her footsteps by trying to save the world and the people in it, and then the subsequent "Rost would be proud too" and I'm, like, suddenly breathless because the writing carries the reader along so well that you are caught off guard just as much as Aloy is by the comment but you also feel the gravity of that kind of comment and how Needed It Is In That Moment For Aloy.
10/10 fic. If you want to read literally one of the best works of fanfiction that I've read in the past literal more than a decade and if you like the Kotallo/Aloy ship, then this is the fic for you.
Goddamn breathtaking tbh

instructions on not giving up
Set post-HFW/BS, this is my love letter to the AIs in this franchise. As HEPHAESTUS learns new tricks, GAIA and the humans reach out to old friends, reconsider strategies, and make preparations to confront the oncoming threat. (Doesn't contain any spoilers for Burning Shores) Relationships: Aloy & Beta & GAIA Characters: Beta (Horizon), Gaia (Horizon), Aloy (Horizon), HEPHAESTUS (Horizon), CYAN (Horizon), Sylens (Horizon)
Because sometimes you start a game, forget about it for four (4) years, then play it and its sequel in a fevered three-week period and don't breathe until you write a fic for the AIs that you can't stop fucking thinking about.
-
GAIA answers the request to connect to Beta’s Focus, and finds herself looking at Varl’s final resting place.
Or more specifically, the Focus is scanning the plants in the garden around it as Beta examines their health and needs in her interface. She presses a tentative thumb into the soft soil in the basket in the center, muttering about moisture content and light exposure. Beta's other hand rises up, shading her eyes against the light reflecting off the snow as she looks around. GAIA is pleased to see the blooms and leaves waving back to the gentle wind. She has noted an increased appreciation within herself for the way that sunlight glints and glitters on the bright colors since DEMETER’s return: she has checked her logs.

Last time we left our clueless Aloy and big dumb tree Kotallo, they were veyyy blind and clueless to their emotions. Let's see if yhey keep that going, shall we?
------------------------------
It was late by the time Kotallo finally made it back to his shelter for the night. There had been much to plan, and many safeguards to put in place. The guard needed drills, weaponry needed to be moved, and a barricade had to be set up. He was tired. He only hoped being as tired as he was would allow him to sleep.
“I wondered when you’d come to bed.”
Relief flooded through him at the soft, slightly raspy sound of Aloy’s sleep muzzy voice.
“Apologies. I had much to do.”
“Come to bed.”
An order he was eager to follow. He stripped off his armor and set it aside carefully before joining her in his pallet. She was sleep-warm and soft, and she pulled him in readily. Kotollo shifted over to her other side so that she could rest against his good arm, and pulled her against him. “How did you know which was my shelter?” he asked softly.
“Rost showed me,” she murmured, snuggling against him more comfortably, tucking her head against his chest to hear his heartbeat more clearly.
“Your father knows you’re sleeping beside me?”
She could hear his heart beating faster and chuckled, amused. “He knows we’ve been sharing since Sky clan lands. It’s okay.”
“So you say. I will wait for his spear to catch my throat.”
“He will face me if that happens,” she muttered, her hand sliding up to curl in his hair. “You’re safe from him. I’ll protect you. Now go to sleep.”
He pressed a kiss to her hair. “By your command.”

Are things getting spicy? Unno, guess you gotta read and find out besties

WIP Wednesday- One Step Closer
I don’t know what to say about this except its Kotallo’s thoughts while Regalla and Aloy duke it out and pre-relationship. While not in this post, I am planning on some medical treatment between the two and a one bed trope so
Word Count: 964
The challenge is set, the agreement made. He doesn't doubt Aloy, he trusts her skills, knows her skills- she flew on the Wings of the Ten! She is his commander, and he does not falter in his loyalty to her, his confidence, but worry claws at the edges of his mind. It’s what makes his heart start to pick up even though the battle has yet to start. Adrenaline is still coursing through him, a tenseness, an eagerness.
"Aloy," he calls, soft only for her. She turns her head as she walks past. She's wearing that familiar scowl but there's a tightness around her eyes. He gives her a nod.
He knows she doesn't doubt her own abilities but still, any support he can give her (especially since he has been sequestered to the side lines, to watch as she battles to the death- for her life -and he can't even do anything about it), he will give it. Give her everything.
 Aloy nods back.
And so, he watches. Watches as they battle, Regalla slowly pushing Aloy further and further into the arena, maintaining the high ground. They both fight with fury, with incredible skill. Javelins are thrown, arrows are fired. Regalla tries to stain Aloy with plasma and she responds with fire. Regalla charges and slashes, Aloy dodges and strikes.
He can see Tenakth moves in Aloy, in her attacks and defenses. She had mentioned fighting in the melee pits, wanting to meet the illusive Enduring. Ever curious. He's sure it's paying off now. There's a reason Regalla has lived this long, and it’s not out of luck.
It comes to an end, because these things always do. Regalla's sword drips with plasma, and he can see the purple substance glowing on Aloy. It doesn't hinder her, nothing does. She is an immovable object, nothing will stand in her way, no person, no machine, not even a damn mountain. She tames what she can and kills the rest.
And so, he isn’t surprised when Regalla finally falls, kneeling in the sand on the arena, the very arena that made her a Marshal, where she challenged Hekarro. Where she was spared.
 Twice now.
He hopes the same bad taste that's in his mouth is in hers.
"You mean to send her alone?" He walks forward, eyes not leaving Regalla, spear still gripped tightly. "Without even an armed guard?" He looks at Aloy. Hekarro said it himself, letting her live made things worse. For the Tenakth, for his fellow Marshals.
Something close to betrayal seeps into him.
"She does not need it," Hekarro states, hand raised to soothe. It does little to the rage boiling in his chest. How much has she taken away already? Knowing that she will be in their base, in their makeshift home, where they're supposed to be at peace, infuriates him.
"I will be there. You have my word." She nods, solemn. And he hates that he knows she doesn't back down on her word. She has honor.
"I'll hold you to it." Aloy doesn't look at him, and ultimately, she is his Commander. Ultimately, no one will follow Regalla after this; her continued failure.
"Chief, there is something you both need to see in the throne room," Ivvira informs.
 They walk away.
This day is full of surprises: Aloy flying on the Wings of the Ten and Regalla spared.
He finds Aloy in a corner of the Grove, braced against the wall, head tilted back, and eyes closed. His irritation has melted away, rationality taking its place. Aloy wasn't wrong (she rarely is) when she said she needed all the help she could get. Regalla is a powerful ally. Even if he hates it.
"Aloy," he calls once again, soft only for her. Her eyes blink open immediately, and she pushes off the wall.
"Kotallo." She can see her eyes raking over his figure and he does the same, categorizing her injuries. The bruises, the burns, the cuts. Her armor is singed in places, burned away, or bloodied and dirty. There are many dents.
"You are bleeding," Kotallo simply states. His hand reaches out to grip her elbow as he looks at the gash in her bicep. She looks too, turning her arm.
"Just a simple gash." He would be more worried if he hadn't seen how she got it. Rolling out of the way of Regalla's spike trap only to rise into one of her arrows. She hadn't had enough time to dodge fully. She can switch between weapons just as fast as Aloy. She scowls at the wound and its then that she sways.
Kotallo's concern grows as he leans forward, prepared to catch her if need be. He doubts she's had time to rest, given herself time to rest, after the Gemini cauldron. He also doubts she's still fully healed from that. And now she just defeated- he stops his thoughts with a shake of his head. Aloy stares unfocused at his chest and he squeezes her elbow.
"Aloy?" His answer comes with her fully slumping forward, against his chest.
Kotallo doesn't dare make a sound, only moving to fully wrap his arm around her shoulders. He rests his chin on her head. He can feel his heartbeat in his ears, surely, she can feel it in his chest, in his throat. But she wraps an arm around his waist too, lets herself be tucked against him.
His arm tightens just barely, like he can shield her, protect her, against the outside world. She need only say the word, and his sword will be at the ready. He shifts so his back is towards the rest of the room, hiding her away from any prying eyes.
"One step closer," he hears her murmur. "One step closer."

May 11th: Don’t Look At Me Like That / Firsts
Aloy and Erend settle in at his place for the night. They play a few games of Strike over drinks and discuss a future after they maybe win against Nemesis. More is revealed than expected, and once they realize how late it's gotten, Aloy ends up spending the night (in her own bedroll). How will Aloy handle her blooming emotions and the fact that Erend definitely likes her despite the fact neither of them will just come out and say it?

Against the Lightning
I've finally finished uploading this fic, which I've been writing on and off since around April last year... So glad it's over, and I had to draw something to commemorate it. Thanks to all who have read it and waited (very patiently) for its completion!

Chapter 2 for "A Spirit's Flight" is up!
"The balmy weather of autumn had finally given way to winter chill, brought in from the cooling north seas. It blew over the peaks surrounding Valleymeet, cascading down its slopes and weaving its way through the Spiritlands’ dense forests below. Those living in the Embrace would experience its bite soon, but the many beasts of the wilder territories had already taken shelter from the coming season’s icy grip. Thus, game grew scarcer, as it always did every year, while evergreen trees boasted their viridescent leaves that would remain all throughout the heralding season..."
Drew up a scene to accompany the new chapter! You can check it out by clicking the link to my AO3 on my pinned post :D

To the Ends of the Earth chapter 2 is LIVE! All of this brilliance comes from the mind of @yahnkehy. Here's a little snippet from this chapter for y'all to sample.
---------
“Time to see if you live up to your name, Rost of the Nora,” Fashav stated as he stopped and turned, putting Rost at his left side and he pulled the bow up and knocked an arrow. Rost huffed and shook his head.
“No idea what you mean, Carja. Tell me later. Let’s kill some bandits first.”
The first of the riders charged them, taking down the first of the unarmed Carja guards, but Fashav made sure to leave their machines riderless with swift arrows to their throats.
“Grab weapons from the dead, you fools!” Rost roared, leaping at one of the riderless mounts and driving his spear into its processor, glad for the practice with the focus while hunting now that he needed it to keep these barely armed children alive.
