Okay but there's actually going to be a live action How to train your dragon movie and the director (Dean deBlois) from the original is going to direct it. Great news! I'm very happy that the movie is in his hands and apparently casting is already happening? This is actually real? It's not coming out until 2025 but based on what happened to The Hidden World i would say a 2027 date is more likely.....
Anyway, I think this could have the potential to be a very epic and beautiful movie (FYI: i'm not one of those people that hate on the trend to make live action from animated movies. I obviously will always adore and treasure the original animated movies more but i like seeing my favorite movies in new different ways and medias. It's just fun to have something to wait and anticipate for).
And maybe this is when the HTTYD fandom rises from the burned village and rebuilt itself again, i've missed the fandom a lot and i see this as a fun, new way to connect again.
(unless a new animated tv series is going to come out first that takes place after the hidden world with domestic hiccstrid and the rebuilding of New Berk without dragons... just manifesting)

Anyway the How To Train Your Dragon movies are great, they’re swell, good animation and good storytelling I’m not mad at anyone who enjoys them etc etc etc
But I will never ever forgive them for taking those books and changing the message from “sometimes you don’t fit in with society and you end up severely handicapped by their standards and you must use your different mindset and unique perspectives to overcome constant opposition while never really properly being accepted”
Because “man and nature can work together and treating something with kindness is better than treating it with hatred and the mistakes of your fathers can be undone and what makes you different also makes you incredible” is a viable message
It’s just. One of these messages has been done before and it’s the one that repeats the plot of every horse movie ever.

canon tidbits i think people who've only seen the httyd movies should know that are confirmed in the shows:
tuffnut and snotlout are canonically talented seamsters
we see the prototype versions of hiccup's flaming sword and the flightsuit in race to the edge
hiccstrid's first kiss is in rtte and its perfect
VIGGO GRIMBORN aka the best httyd villain and the "hiccup's evil mirror" concept actually done right
there are multiple societies dedicated to protecting dragons other than berk
snotlout's assholish disposition is a consequence of his deeply held insecurities that if he can't be the best he's the worst, which is encouraged by his father
the other riders (namely snoutlout) have used the ship name hiccstrid to refer to hiccup and astrid
hiccup redeems so many villains in the shows (alvin, dagur, viggo - one of them later performing a heroic sacrifice to save him) that it's completely unsurprising he thought he could change drago's mind
hiccup punched snotlout in the face and knocked him out cold
the shows let the twins be smarter, snotlout be more thoughtful, and astrid more deranged
snotlout's middle name is gary

The fact that the Httyd gang knows about the effect of dragon nip but they are never seen using it on any dragons throughout the franchise unless it's like a last resort or an emergency to stop extremely out of control, hostile dragons. They know that grass is like a drug for the dragons so they never use it against them even to try and train them. As if it is against their moral code to try the easiest way to tame any dragon.
Like, these kids know all these little perks about dragons that Hiccup learned in the first movie. The dragon nip, eels, moving spot of light, specific disabling scratch spots etc. And none of them uses these to befriend or train any dragons throughout the course of the franchise! Dragon nip is an emergency last resort for when they encounter a super aggressive dragon, eels are an absolute no, nobody used shiny laser light spot on any dragons post Httyd 1.
No, they befriend the dragons with trust. They'll only give a dragon scratches after asking permission that is telegraphed in their body language.
The riders respect dragons and there are so many little subtle things which show how they never treat these incredible amazing beings as if they are animals, they always treat them as individuals. As equals.
I love Httyd so much like you have no idea.

I can never think too much about Httyd 1 Astrid before I get too emotional.
At 15, this girl was so bitter and harsh and kept everyone at a distance and hard on everyone, including herself, and she didn't allow any emotions of hers to shine through beyond anger and its varying shades. I mean, how could she?
She grew up around blood and death, destined to inherit the same war her parents and grandparents did, stuck in an endless cycle of violence no one truly knew how it got started in the first place other than the very plausible reason that their enemy was simply cruel, unreasonable and would never stop coming. Not until one side finally eradicated the other, never knowing that the annihilation of one side would without a doubt automatically mean the destruction of the other before the unknown third party in this war, the Red Death, inevitably moved on to rinse and repeat elsewhere.
Astrid had no prospects for the future and she knew it. She would live out her life as a warrior, fight and get injured until the day she would inevitably die, probably in battle. Except maybe she would get to see her parents die a brutal death before she goes. Maybe even her future husband. Maybe even her future kids. That is, if she even got that far in life.
So no wonder she just stood by and watched with a vaguely sad look as Hiccup was bullied. No wonder her best pieces of advice were "he's never where he should be" and "pick which side you're on." No wonder she got pissed as hell at Hiccup when she fought to get just the littlest bit of an edge in a cruel and unjust world only to have it stolen right out from under her by the chief's son, who basically breezed his way through dragon training thanks to Toothless. No wonder she was ready to tell on Hiccup's ass when she found out he was making friends with the enemy, the same one who would come at night and steal their food and destroy their homes, leaving them to starve exposed to the elements.
And no wonder, when Hiccup shows her that a bleak future of endless cruelty isn't the only option for her anymore, she blooms open like the most beautiful goddamn flower in the entire north. She loves Snoggletog, experimenting with cooking, pranks, big romantic gestures. She gets truly in touch with her emotions and finds it important to build up the guy who literally gave her a future.
Astrid makes me so emotional, guys...

Hiccup, to Astrid: If you see Snotlout, give him this message *makes a neutral face*
Hiccup: He'll know what it means.
*later*
Astrid: Oh, and Hiccup said to give you a message.
Astrid: *makes a neutral face*
Snotlout: Oh no. The neutral face of displeasure.

(The last one had like 3 movies that were not Dreamworks so I'm making one that's only Dreamworks, I picked the most iconic)
Don't forget to reblog to make a larger sample size!

“I will take your leg/other leg” is the most common threat on dragons edge
It’s started with the death song episode when Snotlout yelled at Hiccup
Then Hiccup started saying it when he got upset
The twins took that as the green light to say it as well
Astrid said it next to Snotlout and Tuffnut
Fishlegs was the last to say it
Other merchants and dragon hunters hear them using it out in public and now it’s a common threat throughout the archipelago and beyond
