so the red death burned most, if not all, of the vikings' ships, right? which means while hiccup was unconscious, berkians found a way to collaborate with dragons in order to get home. hiccup was unconscious in berk at least long enough for gobber to craft his leg and toothless' tail and saddle. someone removed toothless' broken saddle. many vikings were on the backs of dragons. the work to start forging bonds wasn't left only in hiccup's hands. it needed his prompting, but humans and dragons were working at peace by the time he awoke. that's beautiful. isn't that beautiful?

I keep thinking about the live action remake of HTTYD (that is confirmed and filming in Ireland this summer, which means I now have even more personal beef with Dreamworks) and thinking about the MONUMENTAL task that will be creating "live action" Toothless. A task I personally think is doomed to fail from the getgo.

Like, Toothless is not the kind of animal that translates well to realism. He's a vaguely mammalian, vaguely reptilian dragon with cartoonishly proportioned features (see his legs) and very large eyes. He works wonderfully in the world of HTTYD because ALL the characters, vikings included, have exaggerated proportions, and he doesn't look out of place at all. There is no way you can really translate his features into "realism" without either removing key elements of his design or leaving them in and having him appear to be a Not Very Believable creature. The eyes especially! They're a massive part of why he's so expressive, and to shrink them for the sake of realism would absolutely ruin his charm. But to keep the same proportions that are in OG HTTYD would look way too cartoonish and out of place.

So, either he's going to look like an awkwardly placed, obviously CGI dragon, like one of those weird "real life" cartoon movies that were a thing in the 2010s

Or (and the more likely thing, imo) they are going to go more down the route of the HTTYD stage show. Which um...

canon tidbits i think people who've only seen the httyd movies should know that are confirmed in the shows:

tuffnut and snotlout are canonically talented seamsters

we see the prototype versions of hiccup's flaming sword and the flightsuit in race to the edge

hiccstrid's first kiss is in rtte and its perfect

VIGGO GRIMBORN aka the best httyd villain and the "hiccup's evil mirror" concept actually done right

there are multiple societies dedicated to protecting dragons other than berk

snotlout's assholish disposition is a consequence of his deeply held insecurities that if he can't be the best he's the worst, which is encouraged by his father

the other riders (namely snoutlout) have used the ship name hiccstrid to refer to hiccup and astrid

hiccup redeems so many villains in the shows (alvin, dagur, viggo - one of them later performing a heroic sacrifice to save him) that it's completely unsurprising he thought he could change drago's mind

hiccup punched snotlout in the face and knocked him out cold

the shows let the twins be smarter, snotlout be more thoughtful, and astrid more deranged

snotlout's middle name is gary

What if movie httyd becomes book httyd and book httyd becomes movie httyd (I hope you understand what I mean, if you don't I drew what I meant, the drawings are at the end of this post)

And the green death is now the red death and red death is now the green death

And movie toothless lost his tail by the red death like in the books with the green death and book toothless got his scar when book hiccup shot him.
