Hmm... thinking about Jewish Penderwicks.
Specifically thinking about Martin (who is from a family of secular Jews) doing his best after Elizabeth’s death to recreate the traditions his wife brought to their home. She had a beautiful voice, and she laughed while she sang, and Martin feels terribly inadequate as he stumbles through a transliterated siddur in the weeks after her death. He wishes desperately that he had spent time learning this language, his children’s language, instead of Latin. But the truth is, none of this feels the same without Lizzy. It’s not just the Hebrew; it’s the fact that Martin feels like he can never capture his wife’s joy and passion for these traditions. He was never terribly religious, but he was in love with Elizabeth and the way she joyfully and effortlessly built their Jewish home.
He sits the girls down one day and explains that he doesn’t know as much about these things as Mommy did. Looks each of them in the eye (even baby Batty, who is lying half on top of Hound and babbling nonsensically), and asks if they would like to learn together. Tells them honestly (because Martin has always believed in being honest with his children) that the songs and the candles and the holidays were very important to their mother. Tells them also that his family never did any of these things, and he and Aunt Claire still love each other very much. He tells them that he’ll learn with them, if they wish, because he loves them very much. But he’ll love them just as much if they don’t want to learn, or if it makes them too sad to think about Mommy singing those songs. He tells them they can think about it and decide when they’re ready.
He thinks Rosalind is the most like Elizabeth. She asks to go to synagogue most weeks, carefully sounds out Hebrew letters at their kitchen table, sings the prayers with a voice warm as honey. Batty goes wherever Rosalind does, of course, and she soaks up Rosalind’s blessings like a lullaby. Jane, Martin thinks, is most like him: in love with the stories and culture, smiling and singling loudly, lai, lai, lai, because she doesn’t know the words but is moved by the rhythm—but not so fussed with all the rituals. Skye is a bit of an enigma: she seems to have entirely replaced Judaism with math equations and soccer drills... until Martin comes home one day to find her sprawled on the floor, one of his old yarmulkes on her head, poring over a copy of the Tanakh and scrawling notes in the margins.
And for the first time in a long time, he thinks of his Hebrew name: Menachem. Comfort. Martin isn’t a rabbi, is better suited to the world of science than theology. But he comforts his children, and he is comforted by them in turn. He marvels at the truth of his name, and the wisdom of this ancient language that lays bare what he knows in his heart.
Maybe he’ll learn some Hebrew, after all.

the first three books are perfect and glorious in each of their own ways, but The Penderwicks in Spring is on a whole other LEVEL.
#the penderwicks#reading tag#though i miss my MOOPS :(#point mouette was so GOOD though!!! skye being the oldest sister and taking it so seriously!!!#the note in her voice that cares when batty's hiding! her relief when she hears hound barking trouble and batty's fine!!#and the HAIRCUTS#i love them your honor#but penderwicks in spring.....oh my....#i've been realizing as i go through that mayhaps the earlier books hit me less strongly than they should#even though i love them! it's from more of an outsider's perspective#because i'm a youngest child and growing up felt like i was always surrounded by adults#so batty being so well cheered up by the praise from her older siblings / all the other grown ups around her was hmmmm......relatable#for me at least you would sometimes just be desperate to be seen as a person#but made me supremely :( :( :( in the last third of the book#but oh man the outpouring of LOVE for batty!!!!!! I CRIED ACTUAL TEARS OUT OF MY EYES#sometimes that's how it be when you're little and you don't know how to tell someone what's wrong#everyone KNOWS something's off and wants to help but batty couldn't find a way to tell them!!!!#so you know i was doing parks and rec I'M DISTRESSED SOMEONE FOLLOW ME for the entire thing#gestures wildly WHY ISN'T SOMEONE HUGGING HER RIGHT NOW????#but jeffrey sending her hound's picture!! jeffrey hearing her voice and IMMEDIATELY plonking her in front of the family!!!!#CHEF'S KISS#and ben and lydia hijinks were wonderful and cute#i loved the eyebrow raising at oliver but the lack of hounding rosy about it till the very last minute#because you know....you love someone so much that even when their choices are bad you love them so you want to like them anyway#also batty and ben being disgusted at the sheer number of teens at their house at any moment#askjhfdaskhjjkh i love them#it was a whole lot and i LOVED it

The Penderwicks on Gardam Street……… was so good. It’s as good as (if not even better) than the first book. It was so heartwarming (All the sister scenes) (Batty being very excited when Jane asks for her help with reading lines for the play, because no one asks her for help, since she’s still young enough to be attending daycare) (all of Batty and Hound and Ben’s pretend games) (also you know that scene where Mr. Penderwick goes on his ‘date’ and Batty is in the car with him and he pretends that he doesn’t know she’s there? and he parks in front of a pizza place and rolls down the window so that the smell wafts in and says very loudly If Only I Had Someone Here To Eat Pizza With and Batty can’t help herself and says Daddy It’s Me! and then they have pizza together and go on an adventure, just the two of them? Beautiful) and SO funny (the whole Bug Man thing) (Batty wearing sunglasses and putting swimming goggles on Ben while they’re on the lookout for Bug Man) (Ben’s second word is Pretty because he sees Skye and thinks she’s pretty and decides on the spot to tell her she’s pretty) (Skye being very embarrassed by this) (Skye and Jane’s homework switch) (Nick Geiger and his Oliver Wood-level love for football) (Nick’s idea of persuading Rosalind to do something is having each tall, intimidating high school sportsman on the football team come and recite the exact same plea to her) (the fact that they actually DO this) (the fact that it takes two tries and Rosalind immediately caves) (that line about Nick not believing in romance during the football season) (Tommy’s very blatant crush on Rosalind) (the idea that ANYONE would believe that Skye wrote the Aztec play. I mean, they didn’t buy the poem, so why (HOW???) did they believe she wrote all those romantic parts??) (Skye telling Pearson to go and soak his head when he tries to ask her out) (Bug Man being restrained with Mrs. Tifton’s neckties) (the fact that Mrs. Tifton SENDS JEFFREY NECKTIES from her honeymoon locations and the fact that he GIVES THEM ALL to Batty) (Batty being Right all along….. Iantha WAS the best option) (the girls taking out the car battery so that Mr. Penderwick is forced to drive with Iantha to that university function) (Mr. Penderwick pretending to go on dates with a mysterious Marianne Dashwood and then everyone learning at the end that all he was doing was hiding somewhere reading Jane Austen to avoid going on actual dates) (this whole book was SUCH a delight)

notes and fic under the cut
Welcome to my self-indulgent therapy fic! Hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy writing it. Chapters will probably come out within the vague month of october. If not, then whoops. Anyway.
This first chapter is dedicated to me, without whom this fic would not have been possible.
Disclaimer: Clearly, these are not my characters. However I like to think that Jeanne Birdsall is an all knowing immortal being who can see what I am writing and knows in her heart that it's all canon. Thanks, Jeanne.
Enjoy!
There was something special about that house on Gardam street. “Vampires live there,” a teenager said, not looking up from his copy of Breaking Dawn. “Like the Cullens, except they’re all trans.”
“That’s why the house is painted red!” his friend added. “The vampire thing, I mean. One of the people who lives there--you know, the young one with pretty hair who danced at the community center last winter--said it’s symbolic of the blood they’ve spilled and a reminder of who they are.”
Most of these statements were, in fact, incorrect. The bright red exterior of the house was because it had been Elizabeth Penderwick’s favourite color at the time they repainted, and because the paint store was having an oddly specific sale. (Footnote: Let's just say a new hire had made some mistakes with the monthly supply order. End of footnote). And not all of them were trans. One of the cats was cis.
However, it was true that vampires resided at the Penderwick House on Gardam street. Nine of them, to be exact. There was Elizabeth, who’d changed her name at least three times and was originally some early century English noble; her husband Martin, who would be a lot better at botany if he acknowledged that technology had indeed progressed in the past fifty years; and her wife Iantha, who could name any star visible from Earth from memory, but needed a cookbook to make rice without burning it.
Rosalind had been with them the longest, (though they’d only been able to legally adopt her some time in the twentieth century) and she was the only one of the children to be originally from England, as after she got Turned and joined up with Penderwicks, the family had begun to travel. Skye and Jane were the next to join, from Scandinavia and France respectively. They looked nothing alike and bickered constantly, but were secretly each other’s favourite people on the planet. (Footnote: Jane called it nonbinary solidarity. Skye called chance and proximity. Either way they were Siblings. End of footnote). Batty was next, as well as her ever growing litter of carefully Turned animal children. Then Ben, who thought movies were the greatest thing ever invented, and finally, Lydia, Turned at the ager of fifteen while being an overworked Vaudeville performer who’d run away from home. (She was also “the one with the pretty hair who danced at the community center” mentioned earlier). (Footnote: And these are just the vampires. There were also three dogs, two rabbits, a ferret (all Batty's), a cat (Iantha's), a snake (Rosalind's), two ghosts, and a mysterious growth named Cagney with 702 genders who'd lived in a room on the third floor since before any of them had been born, and only ate red shoes. Needless to say, it was a full house. End of footnote).
The family was big and strange and had been living in Cameron for longer than the collective memories of the townspeople could recall. They’d been friendly neighbors, reclusive weirdos (whatever suited them best at the time), had gone to school, gone to work, ate people, for hundreds of years. Now, though, it was daytime and they were all in their rooms.
At one pm, Skye felt a rustle on their bed. They stirred, slightly, then fell straight back to sleep. The alarm wouldn’t go off for hours and they would need to be well rested for the night’s hunt.
There was another rustle. Skye could have sworn someone poked their foot. They kicked in the general direction of the affront, grinning into the black silk pillow when they heard a yelp and someone mutter “little shit.”
“Go haunt someone else. I need sleep,” Skye mumbled. As they said it, though, they slid over to one side of the bed and pulled back the covers, letting Jeffrey crawl in beside them. He was trying hard to be corporeal right now, and not fall right through the bed or accidentally inhabit Skye’s body. Even after being a ghost for hundreds of years, though, it was difficult for him. Before the Penderwicks had moved into the ancient Penderwick House (previously known as “Arundel”), Jeffrey had floated aimlessly around the grounds, with only a highly judgemental cat for company. It had taken him a while to warm up to the family and to see the point of things like being visible and occasionally even tangible. They hadn’t pushed him, but it was nice to have a friend
“Mmph,” Jeffrey said, burrowing closer to Skye.
“Not fair, you’re melding partially with the mattress!”
He flicked Skye on the nose, semi-successful in keeping his fingers separate from their flesh. “I do what I like, you blood-sucking fiend. Also, it’f more comfy this way.”
Skye rolled their eyes behind closed eyelids. “Spoiled. You didn’t wake Jane when you came in, did you?” They inclined their head slightly to see Jane’s bed across the room, which was outfitted with eggplant colored sheets and matching canopy that she’d made herself.
Jeffrey snorted. “The French Revolution couldn’t wake Jane.”
At that moment, Jane began to rise from her sheets in the creepy stiff-as-a-board way she preferred, speaking in her low, resonant, “drama” voice that was usually reserved for victims, or royalty, or both.
“To the surprise of all but herself, the vampiress reveals that she has been awake for three and a quarter hours, using the guise of sleep to avoid socializing.”
Skye sighed. “Of course you did. Now come over here.” The rest of the house was still asleep and neither Skye nor Jane had ever succeeded at Sound Barrier charms, so it was best to not be shouting across their shared bedroom.
Jane wrapped herself in her purple quilt and levitated across the room in a tangled mess of limbs, plopping dowm beside Skye. For a moment, the three lay in comfortable silence. Then, Jane reached cross her sibling and mussed Jeffrey’s hair (or rather, she would have, had Jeffrey made his head a consistency other than “slightly condensed cloud,” but Jane decided not to mention that.)
“I had been deep in imagining I was dining with Oscar Wilde when you came in, Jeffrey. For a moment, I thought it was that horrid cat--back to bite off another of my toes! Imagine my relief to find it was just a ghost!”
Jeffrey laughed, grinning up at the ceiling. “From what I could tell, Mrs. Tifton seemed to heartily dislike the toe of yours she did eat, so I wouldn’t worry too much.”
“She may be a monster, but she’s not a self-destructive monster,” Skye chimed in, frowning when they saw Jeffrey wince. “Sorry, too far?”
“A little,” Jeffrey replied.
“Noted. Won’t happen again.”
Jeffrey smiled, his usual self again, and they resumed their conversation.
Now, while Skye and Jane were atrocious at casting sound barriers (and, if we’re being honest, pretty much every other form of magic), Batty Penderwick was the best in the house. She had to be, for her room was shared with three dogs, two rabbits, and a ferret--all of them immortal--who she’d acquired over decades of her life. At the moment, in a room on the third floor of the house, Batty was hovering in the darkness. On one side of the room, Hound, Sonata, and Feldspar (the dogs) were sleeping in a den of pillows, while Yaz and Carla (the rabbits) munched on dandelions in their crate. Queen Latifah (the ferret, and a new family member as well) reclined around Batty’s neck, utterly undisturbed by her mother’s floating.
On a table in the corner, Batty’s record player was set up, the needle carefully situated on a groove of The White Album, softly playing “Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except For Me And My Monkey.”
Batty was meditating. As one of the younger vampires--not even 200 years old!--and one who’d had sensory issues even before she was Turned, Batty still found her highly tuned immortal senses annoying from time to time, when they would crowd and overwhelm her brain. Thus, she and her animal children had become accustomed to having a peaceful float in the dark several times a week, while the record player softly serenaded them with whatever Batty was currently obsessed with, even when the music was, objectively, not even remotely relaxing.
The song ended and the record went on to the opening chords of “Sexy Sadie.” Batty sighed (she didn’t like this song), and opened her eyes, floating over to stop the music. She should get some sleep. Her head was mostly soothed, at least enough so that she felt content to turn on her fairy lights (one oof humanity’s greatest inventions as far as Batty was concerned), and crawl under her covers, settling Queen Latifah in her own bed under the nightstand.
But, just as Batty was drifting off, there was a soft knock on the door.
Batty waved her hand to dispel the sound barrier, and called out “come in.” The door clicked open, and her oldest sister padded in on bare feet.
Rosalind’s room was right next to Batty’s and, when the latter had first been Turned (after nearly dying of influenza in 1870), she’d spent many a sleepless day curled up next to Rosalind, being regaled with tales of 14th century England, where Rosalind had grown up. Now, Rosalind crawled into Batty’s bed.
“Why’s your room always warmer than mine?” she muttered by way of explanation, then promptly fell asleep. One or the other of them did this at least once a week. It was nice.
Batty smiled, her head now full warm and happy without the buzz of extra noise or sensation or too-bright colors, and curled up beside her sister, asleep at last.

“For a long time after that summer, the four Penderwick sisters still talked of Arundel. Fate drove us there, Jane would say. No, it was the greedy landlord who sold our vacation home, someone else would say, probably Skye. Who knew who was right? But it was true that the beach house they usually rented had been sold at the last minute, and the Penderwicks were suddenly without summer plans. Mr. Penderwick called everywhere, but Cape Cod was booked solid, and his daughters were starting to think they would be spending their whole vacation at home in Cameron, Massachusetts. Not that they didn’t love Cameron, but what is summer without a trip to somewhere special? Then, out of the blue, Mr. Penderwick heard through a friend of a friend about a cottage in the Berkshire Mountains. It had plenty of bedrooms and a big fenced-in pen for a dog—perfect for big, black, clumsy, lovable Hound Penderwick—and it was available to be rented for three weeks in August. Mr. Penderwick snatched it up, sight unseen. He didn’t know what he was getting us into, Batty would say. Rosalind always said, It’s too bad Mommy never saw Arundel—she would have loved the gardens. And Jane would say, There are much better gardens in heaven. And Mommy will never have to bump into Mrs. Tifton in heaven, Skye added to make her sisters laugh. And laugh they would, and the talk would move on to other things, until the next time someone remembered Arundel. But all that is in the future. When our story begins, Batty is still only four years old. Rosalind is twelve, Skye is eleven, and Jane ten. They’re in their car with Mr. Penderwick and Hound. The family is on their way to Arundel and, unfortunately, they’re lost.”

The Penderwick sisters’ favorite seasons
Disclaimer: Much of this is based on headcanons and personal interpretations, not textual evidence.
Rosalind: Spring. It’s a relief to just go outside without worrying about having enough layers and stepping in slush and sisters losing their mittens. She takes photographs. She goes swimming. She dusts her cheeks with coral blush. Something about the still cold morning air and the scent of Jane’s cherry blossom perfume makes her feel lighter, floatier.
Skye: Winter. Skye isn’t a particularly poetic person -- her feelings towards anything are directly proportional to its utility. And while she prefers freshly cut grass to sterile gyms, she appreciates how much quieter everything is in the winter. Whether it’s going for a run, star-gazing on the roof, or enjoying a cup of coffee on the porch, she is more than willing to brave the cold and the snow for the sake of solitude.
Jane: Autumn. Jane is all about the aesthetic, and what could be more beautiful than the woods drenched in gold? What could be more exciting than new stationary? Autumn brings with it so much earnest hope for new beginnings, and it’s this optimistic, ambitious version of herself that Jane must muster when things are gloomy.
Batty: Summer. It’s when Hound was happiest. It’s when she most stubbornly insisted on her butterfly wings. It’s when she’s guaranteed to see Jeffrey. It’s when she took her first solo trip -- to a music festival. Sometimes she takes her headphones and oversize pair of sunglasses and lies in the middle of a meadow, allowing herself to be carried away by sunshine and nostalgia.

Awakening, Part 6
After dinner was done, and the dishes had been washed, Skye sat on her bed, flipping through "A World Like Our Own". Four light-years away, Red Dwarf… Rats. Next one.
"What are you doing?" Jane asked, her voice coming from her side of the room.
Skye didn't bother looking up. "This book has a list of nearby solar systems, so I'm trying to figure out if any of them match that place."
Jane laughed. "You're wasting your time. It's magic! You can't use science to figure out magic."
Skye gritted her teeth. "Magic doesn't exist."
"But…"
"I know what happened this afternoon, Jane. That just means that we've found an undiscovered form of science." Skye said, crossing Proxima Centauri off her list, and moving on to the next page.
"Two stars, Blue Giant and a White Dwarf… Maybe? It all depends on…"
"How does this sound?" Jane asked, shattering Skye's concentration. Skye glared at Jane, who was again scribbling in that stupid notebook of hers. "Sabrina Star Rescues the Prophet!"
"And you say I'm wasting my time?" Skye demanded. "You're writing about saving some lunatic who's been dead since before you were born!"
"She wasn't a lunatic, and I'm not wasting my time!" said Jane, looking hurt. "A good writer needs to write what she knows, and I know all about Ania and Juncture!"
"We don't even know where the heck the place is." said Skye, returning to her book. No known planets. Probably not, but I can't be sure. Of course, if it's far away, they wouldn't know if it had planets anyway. Say, I might be able to figure out whether it's in our galaxy! That way I'd at least know whether it's close.
"Hey Jane?" Skye said.
"What?" Jane demanded, still smarting from the earlier insult
"Do you remember seeing the Milky Way from Juncture?"
"The what?" Jane asked, still examining her notebook.
"This." Skye said, holding up a picture.
Jane glanced at the page, then looked back down. "Maybe?" she said. "I didn't spend much time looking outside."
Skye grimaced, but couldn't really argue with that, having also been too distracted to examine the stars.
Skye could go back and check, of course, but Rosalind had said that they couldn't go back until Daddy said it was safe. "In other words, probably never" she muttered to herself.
Skye walked over to the windowsill and climbed out onto the roof. She focused her binoculars, trying to pick out the statue from among the trees. Skye thought that she could see it, but in the darkness, it was hard to make out anything other than a pale blur. Skye wanted to yell in frustration. Ten minutes. Two minutes out, two minutes back, a minute to open the statue, and five minutes to take a look.
Not that it mattered. She'd have to sneak past half her family before she could even make it to the door. Normally, Skye could simply say that she was looking for Asimov, but Rosalind wouldn't buy the story tonight.
"Mrowwwrrr!" A yowl interrupted her mental ranting. A few feet away, Iantha's cat clung to the old oak tree. "Dumb animal" Skye said. She reached out with her arms, offering a landing pad. Asimov gave her a disdainful look, then jumped onto the shingles behind her. The cat licked his paw, then leaped through the window.
"Doesn't know how lucky he is." Skye mumbled. "Nobody ever stops him from going out." She trailed off, looking at the old oak in a new light. Most of those branches ought to be able to support her weight, if she took it slow, and while Rosalind had said that the five of them couldn't go back to Juncture, she hadn't said that Skye couldn't go back on her own.
Her decision made, Skye stepped back, then threw herself across the gap. She wrapped her arms around the trunk, and her feet found purchase against two of the limbs. Skye exhaled and relaxed. Just as she prepared to climb down, there was a sharp crack under her left foot.
Uh oh...
As she walked through the dining room, Rosalind paused at a sudden chill from her chest. She peeked under her shirt, to see the necklace's gemstone faintly glowing. "I forgot I was wearing it." she muttered, carefully fishing out the amulet.
"NO!" Rosalind snaps, turning away from her sister. "Not now, not ever."
"Please, won't you at least consider it?" Claire persists. "Elizabeth worried that-"
"She shouldn't have." Rosalind says, turning away. "I have the girls to look after, and they're family aplenty-
"And when they've grown?" Claire asks. "It'll be a short five years until Rosie's off to college, and Jane and Skye close behind her."
Struggling to answer, Rosalind instead throws open the door, stumbling out of the kitchen and away from Claire. Alarmed, her daughters stumble backwards.
"It's alright girls." Rosalind placates them. "Not a tragedy. More of a comedy, or perhaps a tragicomedy. Come back in."
Her vision flashed, and the image vanished. Disoriented, Rosalind let go of the necklace and grabbed onto a chair to steady herself. Again? That happened last year… that was Daddy, wasn't it? She waited for a moment, but when the sensation failed to come back, Rosalind shook off her confusion and continued into the living room.
"Hey Daddy?" Rosalind asked, walking over to where her father sat reading. "Could I talk to you alone for a moment?"
"Of course, Rosie" he said, standing up. He motioned her into the front room for privacy, and closed the door. "Are you dying from a mysterious illness?" "Of course not!" Rosalind said.
"Then it's Jane who's dying?" he asked, smiling. "No? It must be Skye then."
"Daddy..."
"Batty? Hound? Me?"
"DADDY!"
Mr. Penderwick chuckled. "Well, if no one's dying, it can't be all that bad. What seems to be the trouble?"
"Well, today when we were in the woods," Rosalind began, but hesitated. Through the window, a large branch bounced onto the driveway. She could have sworn that she could hear a faint yelp.
"Anyway, we were playing soccer in the woods, and Batty accidentally kicked the ball into that old statue of George Washington." Rosalind continued, but her focus remained on the window. That was a pretty big branch, and it didn't look very windy out.
"Did you damage the statue?" her father asked. "If so, I wouldn't worry too much about it. That old thing's been there for decades, and nobody has any idea who put it up in the first place."
"Not...exactly" Rosalind said, but then a shadow slipped down from the tree. It crept down the road, avoiding the glare of the streetlight, then vanished into the gloom of the trees.
"Well, if it would make you feel any better, I can call the park district and ask them to take a look." "I don't think that'll be necessary." Rosalind said, hurrying out of the room and towards the front door. "Would you excuse me for a second?" Without waiting for an answer, she ran to get her coat.
"Where are you going?" Iantha called from in the living room.
"I think I forgot my backpack in the woods. I'll be back in a moment!" Rosalind said, charging out the door.
As she entered the woods, Rosalind didn't waste time looking around. She made a beeline for the statue, knowing exactly where her sister would be going.
She reached the clearing just as the panel was beginning to slide back. Rosalind reached in and pulled out the book just before it clattered to a halt. She opened the book, knowing exactly what she'd see.
Through the panel, Rosalind saw Skye standing inside the hallway. Skye looked around, then jogged out of the frame.
"So much for Penderwick family honor" Rosalind muttered. She hesitated for a moment, but followed her sister through.

Fictional Animals rated against Hedwig
AN: I do love Hedwig, but here’s to all the other fictional animal side kicks!!! Written for @the-forest-library
Chainsaw from The Raven Cycle- about the same. Chainsaw is cool but vicious. She certainly fits the story well and is the perfect animal companion for Ronan. Not to mention, she speaks Latin and came from a dream.
7/10 would want. Beware the trees.
Hound from The Penderwicks- sort of better. The only animal from a contemporary novel but very deserving of his spot on this list. Hound is the Pernderwicks dog and basically the best friend and low key baby sitter of Batty, the youngest. A little dumb but very fun and protective. He dives headfirst into adventure whenever Batty needs help and would do anything for her.
8/10 would want. Beware the mess.
The Cat from The Looking Glass Wars- considerably worse. To be fair, he is a villain. On the other hand, he tried to kill a child and many other people (and was successful). A shapeshifter from human/cat to cat, he literally has 9 lives with cool powers. Awesome character and awesome villain but totally terrifying.
-10/10 would want. Beware his claws.
Faithful from The Song of the Lioness- mostly better. Alanna’s cat who helps her and even saves her life on multiple occasions. He can communicate with her and a few choice others. Good instincts, great sense of humor, and lives up to his name.
9/10 would want. Beware the sass.
Ash from Deerskin- raises the bar high. Ash belongs to Lissar and will defend her to end of the Earth and saves her life so may times. The primary relationship in this book is between them, filled with mutual adoration and complete commitment to each other.
9/10 would want. Beware the snow (btw major trigger warnings for this book, message me for details)
Kit from The Immortals- I mean, she’s a dragon so . . . This was everything Eargon could have been, so go read this instead. So Kitten is not a cat but a dragon who Daine comes to take care of. Daine can communicate to animals, so her horse Cloud, is also a notable animal character. Kit is a fast learner and adore Daine. She’s very sweet but also aggressive when she needs to be. Total bae.
11/10 would want. Beware ignorant humans.
The animals from The Legend of Holly Claus- better. While most books cap it at one major animal character, Holly has a fox (Lexy), a wolf (Tundra), and a penguin (Empy) at her side, who all are fiercely loyal with distinct personalities. While they are quite chatty, they love her and are very human esque in nature, providing wisdom and companionship whenever Holly is in need.
10/10 would want. Beware fear.
Pan from The Golden Compass- totally better. Okay, but like you have an animal companion for life that is like your soul, but you can talk to it. So COOL right??? Anyways, Pan is super awesome, always providing advice and assistance and adventure whenever Lyra is in need. Very lovable, ride or die all the way.
12/10 would want. Beware adults.
Ebon from Pegasus- objectively the most awesome character on this list- So first things first, Ebon  may be an animal but he’s also a person (because Pegasi are people and have a society and everything) but I couldn’t leave him off the list. He and Sylvie are bonded and unlike most bonded pairs can have fully formed conversations in their heads. They also go flying together and are best friends for life. (I love them so much) (they are the literal best) (I think I would actually die of happiness if the sequel came out) (no joke)
20/10 would want. Beware unknown release dates
Vampires •  Werewolves • Dragons • Aliens • Faerie • Portal Fantasies •  Dystopias • Angels/Demons  • Mermaids  • Fictional Relationships  • Fictional Twins • Magic Schools
(for more animal themed books, check out Robin McKinley, Maggie Stiefvater, and Tamora Pierce)

- Hound is the Scooby (what were y’all expecting honestly)
- Batty is the Shaggy, first of all she’s the one who hangs out with hound the most, but also in Point Mouette she has the whole ordeal with what to do if a monster shows up, who else could she be.
- Skye is the Velma, Science girls who are also lowkey gay gotta stick together amirite?
- Rosalind is the Fred, always has a plan/needs a plan, and she’s the leader
- Jane is the Daphne, Looks a little like the ditzy pretty girl, but is actually super smart and the glue that holds the team together.
- Also Flashvan is the Mystery Machine even though it doesn’t entirely line up with the timeline

The Year So Far Book Ask
Tagged by @madamescarlette <3 thank you, darling!! (I DO SO LOVE TO TALK ABOUT BOOKS!!!!)
1. Best book you have read in 2021 so far?
HOW can I answer that!!!! Here is a top 10 because I cannot narrow it down!!
Middlemarch: read it twice this year (liked it the first time, LOVED it the second time)
David Copperfield: my new favourite Dickens. There is a lot of joy and compassion at the heart of this book, and I Loved it very much.
The Mill on the Floss: can’t explain the feeling I got from reading this book (tbh if you know, you know!! It warms your heart but it also makes you want to stand in the rain and cry)
The Queen of Attolia: a roller coaster. Very overwhelming. Was incredibly Shocked many times. (Also, who’d have thought?? Gen??? In LOVE??? Fantastic in concept and in execution)
The Adventures of Sally: a new favourite Wodehouse. You will laugh so hard tears will spring to your eyes.
Night Watch: this one stuck a knife in me and twisted..... but in a good way.
Anne of the Island: much-needed comfort read!!!
Leave it to Psmith: another new favourite Wodehouse. Modern rom-coms wish they could do rom-com like Psmith, Eve, and the umbrella that was Definitely Not His.
The Penderwicks at Point Mouette: A DELIGHT (speechless!!)
The Penderwicks on Gardam Street: ALSO A DELIGHT (still speechless!!)
2. Best sequel you have read in 2021 so far?
Ohohoho. All the Discworld sequels. (Especially A Hat Full of Sky, Night Watch, Thud!, I Shall Wear Midnight.)
Also, The Queen of Attolia. That book decimated me. Admittedly no one’s emotions are very stable at two in the morning, but I was an absolute Wreck that night (morning?).
3. A new release you want to check out?
I am behind on the times so my idea of ‘new’ is rather skewed.... I still really want to read Spin the Dawn, The Goblin Emperor, and Spinning Silver. And am making my way through Queen’s Thief.
4. Most anticipated book release of the second half of the year?
I... don’t follow new releases that much, to be honest. I am currently looking through the lists and don’t see anything I recognise s;lfdjsdlk;
5. Biggest disappointment?
The Hunchback of Notre Dame. I knew how it was going end, but i was still mad. (These days I like books with a hefty amount of Hope and that one.... definitely did not have that.) I also read Tess of the d’Urbervilles for the first time and remember being just... really frustrated with all the characters and about the lack of Hope in that one, too. I was also hoping to love I Capture the Castle and was a bit grumpy about the second half of the book!!
6. Biggest surprise?
The books I read because my friends loved them!! Such as The Blue Castle (Eden), The Man Born to be King (Magpie), Gourmet Hound (Eden), Queen’s Thief (Fran), Blandings Castle/Psmith (Rebekah), Discworld (I think I started reading it for the first time because of Fran as well)...... I also reread a bunch of old favourites (Lord of the Rings and a few Jane Austens) and they were even better than I remembered!! Which was just wonderful!! (though not very surprising, I guess!!)
7. Favourite new author (either new to you or debut)?
MEGAN WHALEN TURNER. I also have a new appreciation for P.G. Wodehouse (after crashing through all of his Jeeves books and most of the Blandings Castle audiobooks) and Terry Pratchett (after bulldozing through a good number of Discworld books, most of them two or three times) and Georgette Heyer (read my first few Heyers this year and had SUCH a blast).
8. Favourite new fictional crush?
In general: Ik-jun from Hospital Playlist (He’s not from a book sksfjkl ;sdfj k I wanted to mention him because I just love him a Lot)
In terms of books: Sam Vimes (sdlkfjs;kls) and Henry Tilney (I loved him before, but this year cemented him as one of the top, if not The Favourite Austen hero in my heart). I don’t know if Gen counts, because I feel very friendly towards him, and alternate between wanting to make soup for him and wanting to bonk him on the head with a cardboard tube.
Mal (from S&B) had some Really Good lines, too. Especially in the last chapter of Ruin and Rising.
9. Newest favourite character?
A whole PLATOON of them. Sasha and Lysander from @magpie-trove‘s story, Beatrice and Romeo from @imissthembutitwasntadisaster‘s story, Emilia and Lily from @itspileofgoodthings‘s stories, Tiffany Aching, Granny Weatherwax, Helen and Irene and Costis from Queen’s Thief, Dorothea and Maggie from George Eliot’s books, Sally from The Adventures of Sally....
10. A book that made you cry?
Literally cried so many times this year over all sorts of stories. But a few off the top of my head:
The Penderwicks (all of them): cried from sheer joy!!!
Seven for a Secret: there are so many lines in the most recent chapters alone that brought tears to my eyes.
The Keys of Fire: which is The definitive Fairy Tail fanfic for me. I just love this story so much. And i was surprised all over again by the forgiveness and the love and the grace and the healing in this story this time around!!
The Queen of Attolia/The King of Attolia: cried out of surprise and joy at nearly all the Gen/Irene scenes (not the beginning ones sl;fksdsdlfk jd but my heart did a great leap when Gen remembers seeing Irene dance)
Ruin and Rising: cried at the ending. Also because I was so happy. (There is no such thing as an ordinary love!!!)
Crooked Kingdom: cried at what Kaz did for Inej (couldn’t help it. That moment was beautiful)
(It has been quite an emotional year. The waterworks are triggered by the smallest things. But I’m happy to say that I’ve cried out of happiness mostly in the book department.)
11. A book that made you happy?
(Nearly all of them tbh!!! I have so many new favourite books from this year’s reading list alone!!!)
The Penderwicks series. Was in bliss for the whole week. I was also incredibly happy listening to the Discworld audiobooks, and reading new installments of Emilia and Seven for a Secret and The Stars Hold No Part In This!!! All the Wodehouse and Heyer books I read were delightful.... David Copperfield was so full of joy and grace and it made me want to prance in a field. All of the Anne books I reread were comfort reads. And of course The Keys of Fire, which kept me smiling for hours: I feel like a kid being handed an ice cream cone with three scoops and a cherry on top whenever I read it. Incredibly happy.
12. Most beautiful book you have bought or received this year?
The second-hand Vintage Classics Jane Austens!! :’) especially Northanger Abbey, which was in Excellent condition. Very floppy (unlike the longer Austens..... alas for Mansfield Park, which is harder to flip through) and fits comfortably in my hands.
Tumblr media
And the Tundra Classics edition of Anne of the Island. (I liked the way the paper felt and the text was a really nice font and size!)
Tumblr media
13. What book do you need to read by the end of the year?
OOH TONS. I’m still reading Anna Karenina (stopped because I thought: I need a happy story right now). Would love to keep reading Queen’s Thief (I’m taking it slow because they’re books that should be savoured), make some headway in Dorothy Sayers’s Lord Peter Wimsey books, read more Georgette Heyer, start on The Goblin Emperor and a Bunch of books I've been meaning to read for a while (The Eagle of the Ninth, Piranesi, Phantom of the Opera, Surprised by Joy, Crime and Punishment, War and Peace are the main ones. This is an ambitious list but I’d like to read at least two of them before the year is out sl;kffdksl;dfjslk;)
tagging: @imissthembutitwasntadisaster @soldier-poet-king @septembersung @lady-merian @called-kept if you would like to!! And YOU, if you think it looks fun and want to give it a try!! :D

penderwicks fans: so ive been seeing a bunch of “if this were recreated by the muppets who would the one human be?” so my question is: in an adaptation of the penderwicks, who would the one human be....
I think skye or jeffrey would make the most sense, but the funniest choice would maybe be batty
oR HOUND OMG
jane would be funny too, but im too desperate to see her portrayed by a muppet (hhhhh best girl)
idk tell me what you think
