Do you have a favorite threat display pose from a bug? I know its bad if the animal is stressed but also so many mantis ones are just so pretty and silly (up go the arms!), it makes me wonder what other bugs have got goin on

I do love mantid threat displays! My favorite species (Idolomantis diabolica) has a beautiful threat display:

I will answer with Eve because I think her reaction would be very interesting!

So listen. Eve is a brute. She has crazy rage and dissociation issues and drags around a sword as big as she is—and by Jove she USES it. Bryony even tells her to just spray it or squish it and be done with it. But she sees this moth in her room… and can’t do anything to it. She’s fascinated. It’s so fragile, so small. She wants it to live. So she captures it (CAREFULLY, trying her best to reign in her strength) and watches it for a little while, marveling at it, before releasing it outside.

She’s not sure what about it captivated her so much. Maybe it’s because there’s so little natural beauty in her life? Who knows…

Do you have any tips for telling leaf footed bugs and assassin bugs apart? They tend to look pretty similar to my eye. Is it just the fancy boots?

The leaf-like widened hind tibiae on leaf-footed bugs are sometimes a good indicator because assassin bugs don't have them at all. So if they do have them, they're a leaf-footed bug. But there are quite a lot of species of leaf-footed bugs that don't have them either, so a lack of them is not a good way to distinguish one from the other.

In addition to the fancy feet, leaf-footed bugs usually have thicker antennae with four rather visible segments. Assassin bug antennae tend to be more thread-like, often with a bend in the middle.

Both have tube-like piercing mouthparts, but assassin bugs have a thicker, shorter proboscis that's very obvious, whereas leaf-footed bugs tend to have a longer, thinner one that they fold neatly under their body and it's often not very visible without flipping them over to have a look.

Obviously there are so many species with such a variety of morphology, there will always be exceptions, but those are at least a starting point.

Wait canon implies Giles and Jenny never slept together? Not disagreeing just never got that vibe. Not that I got vibes that they were banging, either, I guess. Genuine curiosity, can you elaborate on where you picked up those implications?

yes totally! i have a lot of jumbled thoughts on this one.

first of all i think it’s important to note that canon is SOOOO unclear wrt giles and jenny because the writing for them was adorable but ultimately very lackluster (as is what happens when you don’t acknowledge jenny as an actual character in her own right). point is, a lot of this IS absolutely extrapolation, but the crumbs that are thrown our way within canon do kinda imply that there was no consummation. which....is ridiculous lmao, even WITHIN canon (they had SO MUCH TIME OFFSCREEN), so i can totally understand why any potential implications are easy to miss. calendiles canon is a jumbled basket of fabric scraps and i am a dedicated yet exhausted quilter. let’s go.

so first there are the two times where potential sex is alluded to between giles and jenny. first there’s the dark age, where she’d “like to stay in” and he responds to this with surprise + desire, so it seems like this is the first time the subject has been broached. the tentativeness of the following kiss seems to also suggest that this is their first kiss overall, not just offscreen -- which i again don’t totally agree with because COME ON. they’ve been on two dates AND it’s GILES AND JENNY. ymmv tho. anyway, point is, their plans obviously get interrupted and derailed by eyghon, and jenny’s possessed attempt to consummate their relationship is shut down by giles. so clearly they don’t sleep together at that point in time -- not only do they NOT sleep together, the prospect is SUGGESTED and then immediately negated.

the second time is passion, where giles invites jenny over to his place. the setup angelus pulls together is intensely seductive: roses all over the place, champagne in an ice bucket, the implication that jenny is waiting upstairs in his bed. again, the concept of sex between giles and jenny is placed on the table -- again, it is immediately negated, this time because she’s dead. 

and then this all culminates in that scene in becoming, where drusilla-as-jenny’s most telling line is “we’ll be together...finally. we’ll have everything we never got to have...never got to feel...” and coupled with the very sexually charged vibe of the scene -- the tangible longing, the way she’s caressing his face and chest -- there’s a kind of anticipatory restraint. this is something that has been brought up as a possibility by the narrative before, and now that jenny is “alive,” they’re going to actually be able to follow through on it. of course she’s not actually real so it can’t happen, and doesn’t.

anyway, yeah! that’s where a lot of that reading comes from. i personally don’t really vibe with it because 1) it does seem to come from the show’s really weird relationship to sex as a whole, especially in season two -- giles and jenny’s relationship is presented as something Pure and Good and Tragic, and it can only be assumed that the lack of its consummation makes it ever more Painful. jenny is giles’s lost lenore. and then 2) IT’S GILES AND JENNY. it feels so weird that two characters with such sizzling tension who are both assertive, confident adults AND are VISIBLY IMPULSIVE when it comes to each other would chastely abstain from sex during a full year-long relationship. like that just does not clock in the slightest imo.

You should def play through CSAW again--there's been some edits to the way the ending goes pretty recently! (I have some mixed feelings but overall I like it and think it's still true to the heart of the story)
