I had a dream where I was dating Shane. This is your fault. I've never even played stardew!
And I'm a lesbian!

Have you played Coral Island?
I have. It's still a lil too buggy and unfinished right now for me, personally, but I could see it being neat a couple of patches down the road.

Hi. Do you, as an artist, understand that in putting your artwork on the internet for all to see, you're explicitly permitting it to be taken/edited/parodied/posted/used in any other way without your permission? A human could "right click+save as" and then edit your work to their discretion at any time. Why do you have such a problem with it when an AI does it?
Go bait someone else into debating you on rudimentary copyright law, buddy.

I'd encourage you not to feel bad about posting art because of AI. If people repost your art- they could already do that. If people make their own art in your style- they could already do that. Reposting and straight ripoffs were shitty things to do then and still are, but AI didn't really change anything.
Making good AI art, like making any good art, takes a good idea of _what to make art of_ and _what makes it look good._ you're very good at those things and you make great art! so nobody can just replace you with AI. whether an AI learns from your stuff only matters as much as whether other humans learn from your stuff.
This is truly very kind of you and I do find it encouraging to hear, don't get me wrong, but I wanna clarify that this is less about me feeling down about potentially having my art style be trained on and honestly more about just like... lamenting the general shittiness of the late-stage capitalism of the internet in 2024. I've shared my art online since the early 2000s, I've seen every previously safe space for artists get restructured in order to satisfy partners and investors who don't actually give two shits about creatives.
And I also wanna note that I don't think you can't really compare reposts/ripoffs with AI. Scraping content for datasets is theft on a massive scale. The turn-around time for generating AI images is lightning fast, that's why it's flooding the internet so rapidly right now. Even if the majority still holds the opinion that AI images can't compare to human-made art, enough people and corporations out there are soooooo eager to cut corners and sooooo ready to tell artists that it's an inevitable evolution and we should all just ignore the unethical practice this shit was built on.
So, it's just mostly venting. I have nothing to add that hasn't already been said. I'm just tired.

Feeling some type of way about the thought of posting art here again. I've tried glaze and nightshade. With my style, it looks horrid, but I know that the opt-out toggle won't do shit either. And what's the point of trying to safeguard my shit if they've already scraped the site before officially announcing it.
I'm going to post art again. But I'm feeling fucking deflated, ngl.

Yeah.
Especially the point about portfolio sites not being social media. I post to twitter because that's where my professional peers are. It's where you can get approached by potential clients or collaborators. I post to tumblr because it's where my fandom peers live, where I can facilitate a gallery with a semblance of an archival and tagging system, where I've posted my art for over a decade.
If I just wanted to post art with no interaction and no feedback, I could probably do that pretty easily. But that's not why I share my art online.
The continued hostility, commodification and devaluation of artists online is making a lot of us question why we even bother anymore. Platforms that were made successful on the backs of artists are all suddenly turning on their core userbase in order to turn a profit. Like, I get it, websites have to make money and if you don't pay for the product, you are the product, yadda yadda yadda. But I gotta assume there are ventures they could explore other than wholesale theft of their userbase's copyrighted content.
And they all handwave it away by pointing to the TOS as if anyone could've known that by signing a standard agreement to have your content hosted on the site sometime in like fucking 2010 for some of us, you'd be agreeing to having your data scraped by third parties years and years down the line. And I get that TOS can change, but tumblr has no way to effectively purge your content from the platform (that I know of), so it's not like you can do much about it if you've been posting here for a decade.
It's just. so tiring.
RE: Tumblr selling data to GenAI companies. (prev reblog.)
At this point I'm truly wondering what to do, really. (Glaze your art and so on, sure) But even the words we write, our personal thoughts, asks, everything is getting fed into these fucking machines from any site available. "Make your own page!" - Services like Squarespace, which are what I and most of my peers use, have sneakily added the option to allow third-party crawlers to harvest data. And portfolio websites are not social media. I want to interact and I have to reach clients.
Are we reaching the point where we have to post only previews and send finished art via Newsletters or post behind paywalls? Print it out and send a pigeon to our followers' homes?
I'm so fucking tired. So angry.
I've been an artist through life-threatening depression, through working and studying full time, through moving house and country, through the pandemic.
And this? This might just be what breaks me.

You made it an opt-out toggle... On a site where media is in perpetual circulation because of reblogs... So if someone who isn't opted out reblogs your work, that's just fair game?
Hi, Tumblr. It’s Tumblr. We’re working on some things that we want to share with you.
AI companies are acquiring content across the internet for a variety of purposes in all sorts of ways. There are currently very few regulations giving individuals control over how their content is used by AI platforms. Proposed regulations around the world, like the European Union’s AI Act, would give individuals more control over whether and how their content is utilized by this emerging technology. We support this right regardless of geographic location, so we’re releasing a toggle to opt out of sharing content from your public blogs with third parties, including AI platforms that use this content for model training. We’re also working with partners to ensure you have as much control as possible regarding what content is used.
Here are the important details:
We already discourage AI crawlers from gathering content from Tumblr and will continue to do so, save for those with which we partner.
We want to represent all of you on Tumblr and ensure that protections are in place for how your content is used. We are committed to making sure our partners respect those decisions.
To opt out of sharing your public blogs’ content with third parties, visit each of your public blogs’ blog settings via the web interface and toggle on the “Prevent third-party sharing” option.
For instructions on how to opt out using the latest version of the app, please visit this Help Center doc.
Please note: If you’ve already chosen to discourage search crawling of your blog in your settings, we’ve automatically enabled the “Prevent third-party sharing” option.
If you have concerns, please read through the Help Center doc linked above and contact us via Support if you still have questions.

They are already selling data to midjourney, and it's very likely your work is already being used to train their models because you have to OPT OUT of this, not opt in. Very scummy of them to roll this out unannounced.

Hey there! I can't find it right now but I remember you made a sdv comic where shane is talking badly about himself and your farmer tells him "stop talking about the man I love that way!!" or something? Again, I can't find it but if you have a link to it or something I'd love to see it again because that moment lives in my head rent free. I've loved it ever since I saw it. Like. God damn, how fucking romantic. Been obsessed with that comic of yours ever since I saw it, but, again, I can not find it anywhere!!!
Awww, I'm glad! I like that one a lot too lol
It's right here <3
