♦ - quirks/hobbies headcanon

-Oohh this is a fun one. Hollow is full of quirks imo, first and foremost being that they are a burrower by nature and will disappear entirely if you ever put them in a bed with enough pillows and blankets for them to nest in (this is made even easier by the fact that I headcanon the beds of the beetle tribes to be cup shaped and lined with soft padding). How does something so tall fit into burrows so easily is anyone's guess, but they manage to fold themselves in there just fine!

Second is that they're a very good visual learner and managed to learn how to read and engineer simply from watching PK do it, though they have zero interest in actually doing any engineering past fixing any appliances that cause problems later on in their life. Reading is a different story, however- once they begin to realize that they're allowed to have autonomy in their life, they start to pick up on it more and develop a preference for what they like to read. That preference is romance novels, and no, quality doesn't count in the slightest. They're more fascinated by the dramatics of it all than the actual romance (though they think the romance is very sweet)

Third quirk is that I think Hollow is just naturally a very quiet person, in pretty much every sense of the word, and that's how they got away with being the Pure Vessel. They're just...still. Their body language is naturally subtle to nothing, they're not at all fond of 'speaking' in any sense of the word, and they generally prefer to just sit in the sidelines and observe the world and all its nuances by default. These are all characteristics that got amplified to unhealthy levels by the Pure Vessel plan, of course, but that's how they got away with seeming pure before they fully grasped the gravity of the situation (that, and the fact that they were paralyzed by overstimulation after being pulled from the dark hellhole of their birth to a blindingly white and relatively safe world for a good long while). Void-speech is more of a stream of shared consciousness detailing physical sensations and visuals and impressions rather than anything close to words, but if they were to have a void-name, it would be The Silent One. Post-ascension, it would be Bringer of Silence- Silence for short. They don't want anyone but their void siblings (and maybe PK) to call them that, however, because its similar to a true-name in that its uncomfortably close to their nature and thus not something they want revealed to the world.

Fourth is that they're hyperempathetic. This one's weird because they really have no reason to have this at all, given that both of their parents have little to no empathy simply bc of their nature- but they do. This pairs badly when you factor in how similar to PK they are in terms of depressive disorders and emotional dysfunction bc they care they care they care so much but they have no outlet for being able to care other than to give the entirety of themselves to, well...everything. What they went through was absolute hell and was a torture that no being should ever experience, and left them with extreme CPTSD, but if they were told that trying again would end with it working the second time around, they'd do it all again in a heartbeat. Hyperempathy + no sense of self-worth because they attribute all of that self-worth to their success of completing the task they believe is their life's purpose is not a good combo for their own good, but it also makes them an absolute nightmare to anything that gets in the way of caring for those they consider their own

Fifth is canon imo and it is that they are stubborn to an extreme. Good fucking luck trying to change their mind because it's not going to work and the more you attempt it the more they dig in their heels. This is a trait that is inherent to the entire Pale Family and yes this drives Hornet absolutely insane because she's so used to being the stubbornest person she knows so dealing with her just as stubborn family makes everything Even Worse

- Post-Game recovery AUs feat. the gritty and painstaking road to recovery for the survivors. I can name a few lovely fics/AUs off the top of my head that fit this description, but we need more content showcasing the long brutal and messy road to healing and how it's a process and isn't as simple as "oh the infection is gone and everything is good now"

Give me the struggling to adjust outside of a life of solitude and detachment, give me the hesitation to form bonds and let walls down, give me the realistic depictions of trauma, give me the character arcs where they have to learn to live

☠ Angry/Violent headcanon

-Hollow is naturally extremely slow to anger and is very good at controlling said anger when it starts to kindle, but once they've properly gotten angry, it's all over. Expect a cold, calculative fury that is deliberatly honed to an edge by all their built-up grieviances, as well as a grudge that'll never quite go away. Their siblings get a pass to an extent in that they won't hate them forever if they be annoying about something, but Hollow will also never let them live it down. For actual hatred, though, just take a look at what they did to the Radiance in Dream No More, where they tore open her face and staring deep into her eyes as they held her in place to be ripped apart by their other sibling. That's what Hollow's anger looks like. They've got a long fuse, but the explosives attatched to the end of that fuse might as well be a nuclear warhead

As for the violence aspect of it- they've been trained to be a godkiller, and even if they failed bc the actual plan of attack was rather passive, that doesn't mean that they aren't any less dangerous. They won't ever feel the desire to turn that violence upon the civilians of Hallownest (unless they turn to the Radiance or otherwise be a problem), because they believe it to be their duty to protect anyone living within the caverns, but outsiders don't get that luxury and would be dead in a fight against them before they even had a chance to draw a weapon. Hollow's also got a deeply-buried hunting instinct as well, so there's a double layer of them viewing enemies as both adversaries and prey that makes them extra fatal in a fight

☮ friendship headcanon

-Hollow doesn't really make friends as much as people sort of be nice to them, and they gain increased loyalty to them in return, but I like to headcanon that the closest they ever came to having a friend was with Quirrel, back when he was young and Hollow was still an adolescent. Monomon and the Pale King were both friends (though PK himself didn't think of it as such), so as Monomon's apprentice/adopted son, Quirrel got brought along quite often. Eventually when he was around 15 and learning how to mentor others, he was given permission to practice his lessons on the Pure Vessel as a dummy student, and eventually began to talk to them just as a person and a confident when he was left alone while Monomon and PK did their research. He had no idea that Hollow grew to be quite attached to him in the process, and neither did Hollow- they just knew that they felt calmer and at ease when he was around, and that realization both baffled and frightened them

In post-canon aus, I like to imagine that they reconvene with each other while Hollow's still recovering, and form a closer bond as a god of the lost and their favored disciple. That sounds really fancy, but it's basically just a souped-up qpp that accounts for the fact that Quirrel and Hollow are alien to each other. I also like to imagine them as fwbs when Hollow begins to have heats again post-recovery because Hollow is aroace and trusts nobody but Quirrel, while Quirrel himself is easygoing and curious enough about his friend's strange nature to offer a helping hand

ൠ random headcanon

-This is entirely inspired by Broken Open, but I feel like Hollow would be a really good midwife and/or caretaker for those that are fragile and close to death. The Void is aligned close enough with endings for them to technically qualify as a death god, and they've had enough brushes with it for them to be able to identify it when it's close. More than that, however, I feel like as the God of Nothingness they have a naturally numbing/calming aura around them that stills the world into silence, which is very useful for soothing people who are frightened or in pain. I also feel like their protective nature would mean that they'd naturally fall into the roll of a caretaker, and that a profession opposite from what they were reared for would suit them well, even if they would never be able to fully shake their knighthood. They're a protector first and foremost- they don't know how to be (or want to be) anything else

Shade: Did you make many mistakes in your first playthrough? Did you regret some of the choices you made?

Oh, PLENTY. The one I remember the most was I accidentally got down to Ancient Basin VERY early. Like, i think i only had one extra mask, I had only the dash, etc. I could NOT get up that stupid ass elevator shaft with all the spikes and wood, and I could not beat BV at the time. I also couldn't get any more upgrades or tools to help me with BV because i was literally stuck in the Abyss. I am not kidding when I say I spent more time on that gap you normally crystal dash through trying to nailbounce off the fucking teensy little corner spike an then mantis hopping on the tiniest sliver of wood then nailbouncing again to get up, than any other boss. I play on KBM and almost had to restart.

The Hollow Knight: What was the saddest part of the game for you? Which ending is the most sad to you?

Ough, this is hard ; ;. For me, there's three moments. Obviously the Hollow Knight fight itself. It took me a while to get to their second phase, so right when I was feeling a sense of accomplishment and adenaline, they... Turn on themselves. And all that adrenaline immediately dropped into the most emotional dread because i realized they were trying to help me.

Obviously, Quirrel Blue Lake has been talked to death about, but I also got really upset for him when you depart the Teacher's Archives. With age finally creeping up on him, and his memories returning... Poor Quirrel. I wish it didn't have to end that way. Don't Siegward of Catarina me and give me a little toast and then I reload and you're gone. ; ;

As for endings, Sealed siblings is honestly up there. And it's the one I currently have because I can't beat Radi :sob:

Cloth: Which character would you fight to protect?

The Last Stag with all of my being. He deserves to live out the rest of his silver years knowing that maybe Hallownest, or at least her people, will rebuild. He deserves to pass on with dignity and hope. And he deserves a lot of grace for how long he's been in service. The Last Stag is arguably incredibly important to saving Hallownest. Idc whatever canon route is decided, the Stag delivers Ghost wherever it needs to be. Big 'I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you' Samwise Gamgee vibes. I'm not biased at all about this old man beetle.

Nosk: What part of the game scared or shocked you the first time you experienced it? Anything surprise you?
