During the Hallstatt era around 1000 BC, Celtic settlements were vulnerable to danger and required protection. To provide refuge, hillforts were constructed. These fortified structures would vary in their usage, serving as anything from warehouses to urban centers. Despite their usefulness, hillforts were not typically permanent places of residence and were primarily utilized during times of war. When the threat of danger had passed, Celts would typically reside in small hamlets situated in the countryside.
