Sugar Baby Love, Les Blue Belles - the namesake of the piece, and also where I colourpicked the original background from

Komeiji Satori, Touhou Project - the Łucja on the left's personality is inspired by Satori

Fuura Kafuka, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei - not actually referenced directly in Łucja's design, but a later reference makes this important to point out now

Litchi☆Hikari Club - I didn't realise it until after I finished, but I was 100% unconsciously focusing this image on hands because of L☆HC

Las dos Fridas - somewhat inherited imagery from the Komeijis, but I did have it in mind

Subarashiki Hibi ~Furenzoku Sonzai~ - the background, faintly visible at the top of the image, is based on a certain cool hideout. also note the Łucjas' eyes, for no particular reason

Thurible - the cross at the centre of the image rests on top of a thurible. because the top and bottom of the middle section are obscured, it rests mostly out of frame

Embryonic Rabbit and La Vierge au Lapin - the smoke enveloping the central cross is taking the shape of an embryonic rabbit, not quite fully developed, not quite corporeal

Fuura Kafuka, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei - the X pins on Łucja's hat are actually hairpins that she moves up when wearing the hat. in this image, the second Łucja has swapped hers for straight pins

Komeiji Koishi, Touhou Project - the left Łucja's exhausted expression has been switched out for an empty smile. cute!

Altarpiece - the layout of the image is inspired by an altarpiece, albeit with certain sections obscured. accordingly, the piece centres on an (embryonic) rabbit wrapped around a cross

ORANGE SIDE

Berserk - it's kind of hard to include eclipse imagery without pulling from Berserk if you're poisoned. it goes without saying that I am poisoned.

Mushi, The Stalin - this album art was always really striking to me, so it was only natural to homage it. I'm actually a pretty big fan of The Stalin, so references to them show up in a (kind of embarrassing) amount of my creative output

Trash, The Stalin - the mass of gory hands is kind of self-explanatory here

De fornas likgaldrar, Bekëth Nexëhmü - this one requires extra explanation because I fucked up and got a story wrong. during the recording of an album, one member of this duo tried to strangle the other and they broke up the band for a while. the problem is that I misremembered, because it wasn't De fornas likgaldrar that got delayed, it was De dunkla herrarna. so this is an entirely aesthetic pull now.

Eastern Cross and Brazen Serpent - this one's kind of hard to explain if you don't know what Bartholomew's crosier looks like, but it's being gestured at with Ophian imagery as things get more chaotic towards the centre of the image

Gleb Sysoev - while the straps aren't visible in this image after colouring, the outfit both Łucjas are wearing is somewhere between a gakuran and the outfit Gleb often wears while performing with Ultar

Squigly - the snake wrapping around the right Łucja emerged after I got frustrated with how out-of-place her crab claw looked and opted not to include it. I still wanted one really confusing thing in the image, and I ended up landing on using Squigly's Parasite

That One Fucking Scene From Gokseong/The Wailing - another case of me misremembering something, except this time it was the context of the scene literally warping my memory of it. you know the one scene in the cave? I thought it included a much closer shot of the stranger's eyes. I might have mixed it up in my head with that one scene from Insidious, but oh well lol

Angel's curse whispered in the edge of despair, Envy - it got drawn over to the point where it's not entirely obvious, but the background behind Łucja was originally based on this album art

hikari & maya: self-explanatory. you don’t look at either of these two and think “well-adjusted.” i wholeheartedly believe that the closest thing hikari had to a hug before seisho was a mr. white pillow and the closest thing maya had to a friend was her idol saijou claudine, of whom she has all the bonus dvd content

junna: she’s a normal person. neither touch-starved nor touchy but she gets points for dipping karen out of nowhere, though i maintain that that was mostly for The Drama and not an indicator of her usual physicality

banana: she gives hugs which bumps her above junna but i feel like she’s more of an acts of service kind of person, ya know? also she probably rarely is on the receiving end of a comforting hug bc of her insistence to take care of everybody else, all the time. hop to it, junna!

futakao: literally always in contact with one another. the only reason they’re not higher is that they mostly just cling to each other (and banana, once, notably)

mahiru: she has four siblings and two children in the form of her roommates (one of whom she glomps on-screen), she has more physical affection than she knows what to do with. she’s bumped down in rankings because she’s a little more reserved than the next two menaces

claudine: she will whisper bonjour into your ear with no prompting, drape her arm over your seat while she slides next to you, make you believe she’s gonna kiss you with a hand on your cheek and a sudden closing of distance, spring a surprise waltz on you, hug you after battling through the school basement bogeymen on your first day of class to introduce herself etc. etc. and she will do it all with no shame whatsoever. i don’t think we acknowledge just how much of a cassanova kuro is just because she’s too often nerfed by maya but goddamn the effect she had on asami in overture, amemiya, lalafin and the frontier girls in the lovers’ bond story, even yachiyo in twenty faces--saijou claudine is canonically bitchless but if she knew what a work-life balance was she’d pull. that’s my manifesto

karen: she beats claudine by a slim margin because of the torpedo-like quality of her enthusiasm and the inescapable strength of her grip. if kaoruko had the lower body strength to drag karen across the floor in episode 6, karen would have held fast and let her do the dragging.

Blue-Eyes Chaos MAX Dragon and Deep-Eyes White Dragon.

Ever thought of these two dragons as the representation of Seto and Kisara (which can also be interpreted as the masculine and feminine side of BEWD, the original card)?

Look at their figures: Chaos MAX has a big and physically strong body, a masculine form; whilst Deep-Eyes has a very slender and feminine silhouette.

According to Jung and his Archetype theory, there are two energies inside us (among many others) which are, always according to him, the "masculine" and the "feminine". These can also be interpreted in a more mythological point of view like "chaos" or "darkness" (in religions and myths chaos has always been considered masculine, because it's a destructive force) and "order" or "light" (in religions and myths order has always been considered feminine, because it's a creative force) and looky here: Chaos is literally in MAX Dragon's name, also its attribute is Yami (= darkness), and Deep-Eyes' attribute is Hikari (= light), just like BEWD.

I think it's very interesting how their names, attributes and aesthetic fit everything: not only they're chaos and order, but they also respectively represent brute, earthly force (Chaos MAX) and some kind of otherwordly, ascended and goddess-like force (Deep-Eyes). Chaos MAX has harsh forms, it's very angular, like Kaiba's machines and jets; Deep-Eyes is more sinuous, serpentine and "round".

In the Pharaoh's Memories arc we are told BEWD's power can be compared to the power of a god (aka Divine Beasts) and here we see some kind of circle behind Deep-Eyes, which may represent the sun, the perfect divine symbol.

To add more to that, the way Seto summons them in the movie DSOD is pretty self-explanatory: Chaos MAX is summoned in a quick and brutal way, but it takes some more effort for Seto to summon Deep-Eyes on the field, because he needs to chant some kind of magic formula. Or he just wants to do that, but anyway, he even says Deep-Eyes is his "strongest dragon" (always referring to the original dub, not the american one!), meaning that he has higher regards for Kisara's godly power than his own, which is just physical strength.

These two dragons are absolutely beautiful and I think they perfectly represent Seto and Kisara separately, because BEWD can't do that alone anymore. BEWD needs to split to show us both its sides, because whilst we know it as Kisara's soul, in modern days it's considered to be Seto's "soul" too: he himself calls it in the original dub "ore no tamashi" ("MY soul"). That's why we now need two BEWD-surrogate dragons to represent them both.

With just 2 days left to order the Revue Starlight Enactment Zine (order here!) and less than 10 orders left to unlocking the bgumi pin (which I also designed), I thought I would post my thought process behind the bookmark I made for the zine. It's long, so... more under the cut

starting with the arcana arcadia side - i wanted to try to depict the entire story so I split it up vertically into 6 parts.

act 1

pretty self explanatory - the magician summoning the devil, the hanged man saying he won't stop walking, high priestess being sent to hell

act 2 - is a depiction of these two moments in the screenshots

act 3

also self explanatory... the trial. hermit's eyes are closed, still in denial of the truth

act 4

this one i struggled with a bit initially - because conceptually they're also the wild pirates but Evolved in the "play part" of act 4, at first i wanted to include that, but i couldn't figure out a clear way to do so. the paper moon is aruru:

act 5

this was the easiest to come up with - i was just like OK. STAR WAR. (though i did mess around a lot with the directions they faced) the escape pod is taking star girl away from the battle.. the bottom 3 are cheering as they crash to their deaths. the effects on ai/hologram hikari were fun to do. it was inspired the most by this poster:

act 6

and so the girl arrives at her destination - the moon, a desert of bone and ash. where arcana go to die and be reborn. the fool sets off on his new journey, the world teaches the star of her identity, and the moon passes on her brilliance... ah... i can't put a succinct story screenshot in here. go read act 6.

I wanted to include some imagery from the star tarot card. here's a description of the jugs of water i just stole from biddytarot:

She pours the water out to nourish the earth and to continue the cycle of fertility, represented by the lush greenery around her. The other container pours the water onto dry land in five rivulets, representing the five senses.

instead of water, I wanted it to look like paper, like a long scroll overflowing from the jugs. and they're gold just to match the #aesthetic. the star, brimming with hope and brilliance, continues the cycle of death and rebirth by continuing to write stories. :)

now for the stage play side:

originally i just thought of this as the blue glitter side to include seiran - but then i was like what the heck, there are so many other stageplay characters and i want to draw them. but i think it's still representative of the plays as a whole because seiran were the school born on and for the stage exclusively.

i was thinking of the platform stages that you see in the anime, big round things. i didn't actually cross reference but that's how they were in my brain

the jhs are just jumping (diving) into this world of the stage (they did appear in delight first and foremost after all)

as follows from Diving, i was thinking of limitless when i drew this because i looove the lyric that goes "Limitless, into this strange phenomenon / The one who plunged in was me" and the whole underwater theme of seiran esp in the blue glitter manga. i considered replacing the three musketeers tagline with some form of that lyric, and playing with some underwater themes - but it proved to be too messy and difficult. but we still have this kind of jumping down feeling which is really one of my fav expressions in revue starlight

“I need someone to stay in the inn with Trousseau. His condition is still unstable, and I fear what he may try to do if left alone.” 

Castti had announced that at dinner that night in the tavern, everyone pausing their meal to look at her. 

She seemed tired, even beyond her normal. She also seemed pale, terribly so. Everyone supposed being exposed to his poison twice would leave some side effects, even if the remnants of it had been melted away by the antidote. 

"I can watch him tonight,” Hikari offered. He had since finished his meal, and was now sipping gingerly on a cup of coffee. He wasn’t quite used to the bitter taste, and had poured a copious amount of cream and sugar in at Thronè’s and Partitio’s suggestion. 

Temenos gave him an odd look, and Osvald’s face twitched, but no one else gave any sign of reluctance at Hikari’s offer. Castti smiled, nodding. 

“He’s in the room with the blue ribbon on the door handle. Knock twice before you enter, so he knows you’re with me. He’s... still a tad jumpy.” 

Which was how Hikari, Prince of Ku, found himself standing in front of a door with a blue ribbon on the handle, nervous as the seven hells to even knock. 

Finally, though, he steeled himself and raised his fist to the door. Once, twice, and then silence. 

A face appeared in the doorway. His red eyes were even redder from blood, his pupils mere pinpricks even in the light of the corridor. 

“Are you with the Chief?” The man asked, his voice a hoarse whisper. Hikari nodded. 

“I am. My name is Hikari. You can trust me- I come unarmed,” he said, and the door opened enough for Trousseau’s full figure to stand there. 

He looked terrible. He was sickly pale, thin as a twig, and looked as though he was on death’s doorstep, ready to walk through at any time. 

“...Why have you come?” Trousseau asked, and Hikari offered a smile, holding up Agnea’s basket. It was filled with fresh fruits from the market, as well as some baked goods gifted to them by grateful villagers. 

“I have a gift,” Hikari said, and Trousseau fell silent, staring fixedly on the basket. It was a bit unnerving, the sudden stillness, but Hikari planted his feet. He wouldn’t be going anywhere unless Trousseau himself turned him away. 

Thankfully, that didn’t happen. Trousseau stepped aside, allowing Hikari to enter. 

The room was dim, and smelled of herbs. He recognised a few, rosemary and sage. He also recognised the scent of sleepweed and grape leaf, though they were fainter. 

“I apologise for the smell. I was merely-” 

“They’re healing herbs, are they not?” Hikari asked, then became acutely aware of how he just cut the aopothcary off. 

Trousseau didn’t seem to mind (or if he did, he said nothing of it), as he nodded. “Yes. Rosemary and sage help with breathing. Sleepweed and grape leaf are rather self-explanatory, I believe.” 

Hikari said nothing else, simply content to set the basket down on the table, and observe Trousseau as he sank into a chair and took a pastry from the basket. 

“How many days has it been since you’ve last eaten, Trousseau?” Hikari dared to ask, and Trousseau remained silent, pondering and chewing. 

“...Two days ago, I believe.” 

“Two days-!? How has Castti allowed you to go so long without food?” Hikari asked, shocked. Trousseau gave a weak smile. 

“I lie to her. In truth, I do not think myself worthy of being saved. Our dear, sweet Chief thinks differently, however. As evidenced by your presence.” 

Hikari had foolishly thought, a moment ago, that Trousseau would not surprise him anymore. Once again, he was wrong. 

“Oh, yes. I know Chief sent you. She fears I may put a knife or such in my breast, and sent you to keep me from doing as such. Chief may be foolish to allow me to live, but she is not foolish in knowing how to keep me alive.” 

The calmness of Trousseau’s voice as he spoke sent a chill down Hikari’s back. 

“Trousseau... Why do you think yourself deserving of death?” He asked, and Trousseau laughed bitterly. 

“Have you no recollection of what happened two days ago? Did the Chief not tell you the tragedy of Healeaks? I killed them, Prince Hikari, every last one of them in Healeaks, and I would have done the same to Timberain had I not been stopped by Chief. I deserve more than death, but instead I’m being treated like another one of Chief’s patients.” 

Hikari frowned, chest tight. No one deserved death, not even the most vile of men. Especially not a man who seemed to be choking on his regret. 

“Do you regret what you’ve done? Have you any sorrow for the ones whose lives were lost?” 

Trousseau went still, then nodded. 

“I wish I could give my life for theirs. I have no life left to live, and they did. Sally, Temm... Eir’s Apothecaries. Andy, Randy, Elma... Malaya. All dead because of me. Why should I be allowed to live while they roll in their graves?” 

Hikari placed a hand over Trousseau’s. 

“Your regret is proof enough that you do not deserve death. If you were truly the monster you fear you are, you would not feel regret. You would take joy in their deaths.” 

Trousseau winced as though in pain. “I once did. I thought I was saving them.” 

“But you have changed. Monsters do not change, Trousseau. You are good, I swear it.” 

Trousseau fell silent, and soon Hikari found that he had fallen asleep. 

Hauling him into bed, draping a blanket over him, and extinguishing the lantern, Hikari sighed. 

“Sleep well, Trousseau.”

DigiWeek 2022 Day 5: Festival (Crossover)

The said Digimon crossover is the four cool guys as lonewolves and bishounens from four Digimon series meet each other and make a cool pose.

While Yamato and Kouji are self-explanatory, Takeru and Jian are such interesting case. Takeru is supposed to be Daisuke’s rival and lancer before Ken redeems himself and joins as sixth ranger. While the said rivalry is mostly one-sided (Daisuke antagonizes Takeru and Takeru is mostly not interested), Takeru secretly enjoys teasing the hell out Daisuke. Sometimes I cannot help but think Takeru “antagonizes” Daisuke in purpose with such tease (just like Yamato antagonizes Taichi for being inconsiderate in Adventure). Jian, on the other hand, is helpful towards Takato and becomes his friend instantly. Their same interest on Digimon card game bridges their differences. They may have such a-mentor-and-his-junior relationship, yet as the story goes on, they starts become equals and confidants.

Reason why I somewhat see Takeru and Jian as “loners” is their peerless background. Takeru’s peers are mostly elders in Adventure, with Hikari as his only friend that time. 02 shows Takeru’s interactions with his peers. While he mostly treats his peers in amiable manner, sometimes he pushes them away with his terrible emotional management when something personal triggers him. Just look at his fight with Daisuke in Episode 11 where his reasons to fight Agumon (along with his uncharacteristically explosive tone on his voice) enrages Daisuke. Or Episode 13 where his outbursts about Hikari’s dependency on Taichi almost ruins their friendship. Or Episode 19 (which is his awesome and also lowest moment) where he starts speaking with rough language (after angrily tossing his hat upon seeing Kaizer absorbing Devimon’s data) and proceeds to beat the shit out of the villain (with Iori as the witness and it traumatizes him). Of course, after successfully on sync with Iori (thus triggering their Jogress Evolution), Takeru starts to be more open among his peers. In Jian’s case, it is unknown if he has close friends in his classroom (while Takato has Juri, Hirokazu, and Kenta as his closest friends). I presume that it is because of his heritage as Chinese-Japanese kid. Also, he may be outwardly mature and dependable, but he constantly holds himself back and has an unexpectedly aggressive side when situation goes south. His relationship with Takato and Ruki (and later Takato’s closest friends) shapes him to become more trusting.

Like Yamato and Kouji (who have the respective goggle boys saving their ass from the loneliness), Takeru and Jian have also their goggle boys and another trusted friends saving them from their lowest point.

I'll do the first one since the second question is smth I don't exactly know how to answer. But the answer to the first is obviously foxgloves!

foxgloves are a flower i've associated with hikari for fucking yeaaaars at this point. I'm talking since I was 15 starting legitimate rp with my besties years ago. Nearly 6 fucking YEARS years ago.

Foxgloves can mean insincerity, pride, intuition, creativity, and energy. The first two are self explanatory. Hikari can and will lie to achieve a goal or protect herself. She won't lie if it would hurt someone, of course, but anything else is absolutely fair game. She's also a little prideful. Not to the point of flat-out arrogance ( she def knows when she's beat, however many times she tries to stand her ground ) but just enough to push her onwards.

Intuition is moreso Hikari's thoughts based on instinct. She doesn't really follow her concious thought. Her perception is amazing ( and in my ooc circles we joke about how she picks up on things quickly being her REAL power ) but she doesn't tap into it conciously. She just goes. She'll notice a vague detail or offhanded comment, subconciously remember it from a piece of media or book or song or previous conversation and ascribe it to the situation. Even though she appears to have a head full of fluff she does retain more than she appears.

Sakura, Kaede. Quirk: Photokinesis. Can manipulate light from the sun and turn it into solids, use it as energy, and heal. Drawbacks: Using this quirk too often results in loss of energy and exhaustion.

Doriashimu, Akane. Quirk: Lock (not trying to copy Rock Lock's quirk, I swear!). After touching or looking at an object for five seconds, she can command the object to fly towards the target (perfect quirk for assassins or vigilantes). Drawbacks: The object can only go in a straight line and can get stuck if anything stronger than it is in the way.

Anotami, Hana. Quirk: Shapeshift. Pretty self-explanatory. Drawbacks: She is weakened depending on the climate or environment (for example, if she turns into a polar bear and the climate is too hot, she will be forced to change back into something else or back to a human.)

Nagashima, Miyuki. Quirk: Fear Factor. The person can project their own fear onto others. Drawbacks: The people who also fear the user’s fear being projected are the only ones that are affected by it.

Aoratakami, Nayoku. Quirk: Hemokinesis. Can manipulate blood. Drawbacks: Taking too much blood results in lightheadedness and even death.

Torakamo, Hikari. Quirk: Possession. Able to take control of and inhabit a person's body. Drawbacks: Individual's conscience is now in user's body, and any form of harm to the body they are currently in will be felt.
