I think it's fair to say that there are some little ship worthy interactions between gintoki and tae that anime added. Not a question, sorry, just decided to share with you since you talked about differences and other pairings in that way.
1. When Tae dresses as China girl she asks Gintoki how she looks wanting to know his opinion. Not present in the manga.
2. In "stands" arc when Tae pops out of Gintoki's mouth (as a stand) and says something like "Gin-san look out" Gintoki answers "Everything I can see is you, don't get me wrong, I'm not flirting with you". In the manga he just says " I can't see a damn thing cause of you".
3. In sky resort arc Gintoki smiles when he sees that Tae is coming to "help" him and Hijikata, his face is emphasized. Not present in the manga.
4. Tama's vacation episode. In the manga Gintoki and Tama didn't go to Snack Smile. In the anime they went to cabaret club and Otae looked annoyed seeing Tama on Gintoki's lap and she beat up Gintoki (tho I'm not sure if I can count it as a shipping moment?? Maybe she was just worried for Tama?😅)
Tho I still would prefer dialogue in love hotel (Shinpachi and catgirl), grandpa Yagyu's accusation and Kintoki's words about the most important people being animated over this cause:
1. Dialogue in love hotel scene is not only snippy, but funny, they basically cut out Gintoki and Tae being bokes together.
2. Grandpa accusing Gintoki of him being in love with Tae is a part of humorous "chain" – we know that other characters accuse gintae of this too. Also it mirrors gramps asking Tae if she likes someone else before.
3. Kintoki straight up says that those 4 started it and those 4 will end everything. Why anime didn't say it??? Weird decision. Gintoki, Shinpachi, Kagura, Tae and Tama are also emphasized in BFY (without Sadaharu unfortunately)
4. Points 1 & 4 makes Tae act 1) out of character 2) more petty than she's in the manga; Points 2 & 3 are kinda ooc for Gintoki too.
That's like anime tries to show more gintae sometimes, but then they just decide to fuck up Otae's character in return (making her more petty and more violent towards Gintoki as you said in your previous posts). I like anime, but come on, that's some weird sh!t right here.
yessireee i agree to all these...and thank you for adding more.
s1-s4 were a little kind to gintae yet weird to otae ngl. Later they just added some flairs to her scenes. I still won't forgive them for not adapting the most important part of Kintama arc though (and yagyuu arc too, what were they so scared of anyway wth). also i hate how solo merch of her are super rare much less her present with the yorozuya team at least.

Oya Oya
Hewwo :3 I have written much smut but this is my first time making it public. Sorry it came out so long. Feel free to point out any mistakes.
Warnings: choking, dominance
The fusuma slammed shut behind you, rattling the shōji across the room, after he'd pushed you rather roughly into his room at the Shinsengumi dorm. You were honestly surprised the kumiko didn't fall apart.
"What the hell, Y/N?"
You curled your lip up at him defiantly. "What?"
"Don't 'what' me," he warned, pacing to and fro in front of the door, clearly agitated. Then again, the man did have a short fuse. "Who gave you permission to hang with the Yorozuya bastard? Is that what you do behind my back?"
His accusation flipped your entire mood over. You were cheeky before; now you were pissed. What right did he have to point fingers at you? After all, he was the one who pushed you to do it. For three weeks, you had been patient while he worked. Of course, since he lived where he worked, it seemed like he was never free, always balancing his vice commander duties in and out of the headquarters. He did ask for your permission before going on cases, to make sure that you were okay with him doing overtime on certain days. And you always assured him that you would wait for him, no matter how busy some days could get. You always told him that it was okay to put his job first when he needed to. But that didn't mean he could take advantage of your understanding, did it?
The guy was smarter than most; he picked up on hints and cues effortlessly, especially if they were from you. So why had he been so oblivious to your subtle advances these past weeks?
"Who are you to tell me who I can or cannot be friends with?" you snapped back, temper flaring.
"You know very well who I am and what I can and cannot do," he answered, a little condescendingly.
"Yeah, well, you should also know that Gin-san gives me way more attention than you do," you uttered rashly. It was how you felt on the inside. After so many days of neglect by Hijikata, Gintoki's friendly affection towards you had you hooked in like fish to bait. Every smile and head smack he gave you fed your growing hunger for a man you couldn't get to and yet you still went on with it. You hung around Gintoki, longing for Hijikata, for something physical, just to take away the ache of missing the vice commander.
"What did you say?" Hijikata's tight voice betrayed the anger that was sparking inside him. The thought of you just being in Gintoki's presence was enough to provoke him. Confirmation that you let him touch you - nevermind if it was just playful shoves or shoulder bumping - flooded his vision with red. "You let him touch you?"
You scoffed at his ridiculous jealousy. "I'm not a slut. All Gin-san did was listen to me when I was alone. He kept me company."
True, you worked eight hours a day but the tiredness didn't mean that you didn't want to talk late into the night.
"Company, huh?" Hijikata crossed the room to stand in front of you so fast that you had to double check the spot he was previously at, just to be sure. He was a head taller than you. Now that he was all riled up, his presence was intimidating, especially since you had to look up to meet his eyes. "It just had to be him?"
You knew better. If you let him go on, you would have angry make up sex in seconds. This was a matter that needed talking through, not blind fucking. You pushed him away harshly, much to his surprise.
"We're not in a movie, Hijikata." Ah, using his family name when you were alone was never a good sign. "You can't just fuck me and be done with it."
A thought crossed your mind. Maybe it wasn't that he was busy. Maybe it was you who had done things wrongly. If you hadn't dropped all those stupid hints and just came straight forward with your needs, you needn't have had to feel the pain of ignorance from him. Your low self-esteem came racing back to you.
It was my fault. I didn't talk to him.
"I'm sorry," you choked out, turning away from him. Your sudden change in demeanor startled him but it wasn't something he hadn't experienced before.
Just like that, his anger melted away. He stepped towards you, pulling your reluctant form into his arms.
"You shouldn't have to apologize for anything," Hijikata sighed, one hand carefully cupping the back of your head. When his temper wasn't in the way, he saw things much clearer. "It was wrong of me to accuse you like that, especially since I know how much I've been neglecting you. I just didn't like the fact that of all the people to go to attention for, it was him." Hijikata said him with visible distaste. You relaxed against him, calmer now that he was no longer angry, that he had assured you it was not your fault.
"But I like him," you protested.
"Could you not like anyone else?"
"You hate everyone else, except the gorilla and he's infatuated with Otae-chan."
"Are you saying you'd go to Kondo-san if you could?" Hijikata teased, instantly lightening the atmosphere.
With that you ducked out of his embrace. "Please. I don't do stalkers." Hijikata was quick to catch you again though, this time from behind. He placed a gentle kiss to the shell of your ear.
"If you hadn't gotten caught today," he began, "I would have shown my appreciation for your patience in a different way."
"You have something planned?" you asked excitedly, happy that he had been thinking of you too.
"I did," he confirmed in the past tense. "But I can't get Yorozuya's stupid smug face out of my mind."
You knew all too well why. You knew that hanging out with Gintoki came with a punishment if you were caught. Before you could respond, Hijikata had a hand locked around your neck, with pressure not enough to choke but just enough that made swallowing difficult.
"Sometimes I think you let yourself get caught on purpose," he went on in a low voice, free hand travelling down your left arm and tugging it behind your back. He had you in a hold you didn't have any intention of breaking out of. Indeed, just the feeling of his hand on your throat had you weak at the knees, ready to be ruined by him.
"T - Tōshi," you managed, voice strangled by the hand on your windpipe. "Hard to... breathe."
"But you like this, don't you?" He purred. "You want to be choked like the little slut you are."
Oh, there was no denying how much his words were turning you on. Getting choked with his hand was good. Getting choked on his cock was better and you were more than eager for it.
"Choke... me with... your...cock..." Earlier misgivings forgotten, you wanted nothing more than for him to use you. It was all you had wanted since using Gintoki as a filler. His attention.
"Mm, I don't think so, baby girl," he murmured, finally releasing you from his hold only to take your hand and drag you down onto his futon. "I want to give, not take. And I expect thanks."
Translation: I will fuck you senseless and you will be vocal about it.
"Dont you think you can punish me better if - " Your question was cut short by a gasping inhale. Hijikata had somehow managed to loosen the knots of the date-jime that held your nagajuban and kimono together amidst everything and was now shamelessly pushing his fingers between your damp labia, hand disappearing in the folds of the cloth. Immediately, your hips moved up, asking for more when he'd barely begun. He murmured an amused "oya oya" upon finding the absence of underwear on you.
"I think you've been wetter than this, haven't you?" Deviously, Hijikata poked two fingers into your hole without any warning. There hadn't been much foreplay but could you really complain when you were swallowing his fingers like the greedy whore you were? He pulled his fingers out along with your arousal and spread it over your clit, rubbing in tantalizing circles, like a taunt.
"You're going to tease me," you stated, breathless already.
"Just for now," he promised, the sensitive nub slipping between his pointer finger and middle finger. Your nerve endings fired, sending thick coils of pleasure up your body. Again, your hips moved up.
Hijikata chose that moment to take his hands off of you. He sat back on his heels, hands placed perfectly on his lap. Disheveled and disgruntled, you forced your pleasure-weak body into motion, sitting up with your kimono loose around you, one side sliding down to bare a shoulder.
This was no dream: your body had flaws everywhere. Beauty marks on your skin, scars from being clumsy, skin that wasn't silky smooth or creamy white. You felt very small when you walked past some women on the streets but Hijikata always made you feel perfect. He loved every one of your imperfections, which encouraged you at times like these.
"Frustrated?" he smirked and you wondered just what he was playing at. Unbothered, you knee-walked closer, until you were parked right in front of him. Your hands grasped at the lapels of his uniform jacket. The familiar musk of cigarette smoke wafted up your nostrils, further turning you on. His gaze was hot on you; you could feel it despite not looking at him. Deliberate in your movements, you pushed the jacket off then proceeded to unbutton his vest and undo the knot of the white scarf around his neck. You were busy working on his shirt when he caught your hand, bringing it up to his mouth.
The contact of the softness of his lips against your skin made your thoughts fuzzy. His stare lingered on you and your restraint broke. You crashed your lips into his, claiming your pleasure, trying to pacify your desire for him. He indulged you, using a hand to hold your head steady. You kissed and kissed until there was no more breath to breathe between the both of you.
Hijikata pulled back first, dragging a thumb across your lower lip. It was such an intimate move, hinting at the lust he had for you; that was all it took for you to go into full 'I need you now' mode. Impatient, you shoved him back and shimmied up his body, brazenly rocking your hips, smearing your arousal onto his white shirt. Obviously, he felt your dampness through the material and gripped your hips to stop you from moving. The sight of you grinding above him was too much for his already tortured mind. Everything had to go. Now.
Soon you were balancing above him, the tip of his hard cock pressing at your slick entrance. You braced your hands on his broad chest, breath controlled as you slowly sat down on him, the length of him sliding into you inch by inch until your ass touched his lap. The sensation of him in you never failed to make you moan. His girth, his length, everything was just enough to fill up your tight hole.
"My sweet girl," Hijikata murmured, eyes half lidded. "I'd nearly forgotten how good you feel around me." He held onto your hips. "Move for me."
At his demand, you lifted yourself off and back down again, whimpering at the discomfort. Yeah, he was definitely big. Without your weekly routine, your body needed time to get used to him again. It didn't take long, though. Hijikata's soft encouragement and touch had you thirsting for more in no time. You got used to the stretch, gaining momentum and confidence as you moved. No longer did it sting; there was nothing but pleasure with the way you had him sliding in and out of you. Every time you rose left his cock slicker than before, layer upon layer of your arousal coating him.
When your legs got tired, you resorted to bouncing, biting your lip when your ass slapped against his skin in the sexiest way. Hijikata was in awe beneath you. His blue eyes were dark, lips parted in heavy breaths. First his eyes fixed on the way he was entering you, on the way your sweet pussy just swallowed his cock. His rough hands roved up your stomach, fingers dancing over your jumping breasts. That was the second thing he stared at. The soft mounds of flesh on your chest that bounced along with you made his cock twitch. Then he looked at your face. At the way you bit your lip, the pleasure in your expression. Suddenly he wanted nothing more than to dominate you.
The feeling swept over him. Having you on top was incredible, especially since he knew you could control the depth and angle of his entrance. But he needed to have you his way. He couldn't yet explain why.
You cried out in surprise when he sat up abruptly, forcing you to remain still on his lap. You pressed your chest to his, feeling him move along with you, in you. The movement brought on a whole new sensation that made you scratch his chest with a low moan.
"Can he do that?" Hijikata asked, voice thick with lust. And something else. He knew now why he needed dominance over you.
"Who - What?" You couldn't register his words and the meaning behind them at first, not until he flipped you both over in a practiced move and he rolled his hips into you, hitting every unclaimed spot within you. Your legs came around his hips.
"Can that silver haired idiot do this? Make you feel this good?" He pulled back slightly, only to plunge back into you with a jolt that pushed another moan from your mouth.
"N - No. Tōshi..."
Hijikata pulled at your hips, angling your lower body upwards and began thrusting into you, going deep and hard each time. He knew very well that at this angle, each slide of his cock was sure to brush your g-spot. And each time his pelvis met yours, the head of his throbbing cock would carass the tip of your cervix, making you buck your hips even further up.
Seeing you this way only fuelled his unneeded jealousy for a rival that was hardly a threat.
"I bet he can't," he agreed gruffly. "He doesn't know your body, does he? Doesn't know how my baby girl likes it. Tell me." Hijikata drove deep, pushing his own hips up. You choked on a moan, hands tight around his wrists. "Who's making you feel good?"
You were unable to answer, eyes in danger of closing, body on the brink of orgasm. As if fucking him wasn't hot enough. No, jealous Hijikata was even better. His need to hear your verbal confirmation of just how good he could drill you was heightening the entire experience.
Hijikata wrapped a big hand around your throat, forcing you to meet his steely gaze.
"Who?" he demanded.
A lone tear rolled down your cheek and you knew once you opened your mouth, you'd be begging. "Y - You, Tōshi. You're making me feel good. Fucking my pussy so good."
He smirked in satisfaction. There was no need to hold back now. With demonic speed, probably living up to his title, Hijikata slammed into you, hips snapping back and forth furiously. He hadn't even gotten to rub your clit yet and you came undone, pulsing around his cock, sinful moans falling from your mouth along with his name.
"One more time," he urged, tempted to stop and savour the way you were contracting around him. Snug in your warm wetness. He was close. Too close to stop. He spit on your clit and rubbed it in tight circles, coaxing yet another orgasm out of you. This was too much after the first and his name left you in screams, your body spasming, legs jerking. The sight of you being ruined by him did it. A few more thrusts and he fell on top of you, hugging your trembling body close as waves of pleasure crashed over him. He bit your shoulder, hard, enjoying the feeling of his seed leaving him and filling you. The others might not be at the sleeping quarters but you doubted that your screams hadn't reached the main block.
Once you both felt calm enough to move, Hijikata carefully extracted himself from you, using his scarf to wipe off any semen that came leaking out of you. You laid your head on his clammy chest.
"I'd never cheat," you said blatantly.
Hijikata pushed a hand through your messy hair, staring up at the ceiling. "I know. I just... wish I could have been there for you. I know it's not fair, having to always put up with my work."
"You're here now." You turned your head to smile up at him and he returned it with one of his own rare ones. The kind that took your breath away and reminded you of how different he could be around you. "Won't the others be looking for you?"
"Let them," he sighed. "I've been long overdue for a day off anyway." There was a brief pause, as though he were thinking things over. "Can I take you out?"
Your heart skipped a beat, delighted that you both could finally spend quality time together. Not that mindless fucking wasn't fun but normal couple stuff had to come in somewhere.
You smoothed your hand over the skin on his chest, loving how only you were allowed to touch him this way. "Yeah, you can."

• And then you feel guilty about buying the last srawberry cake
• You sighed and then buy another cake, a chocolate cake because it's not like you really desperately wanted to eat the strawberry cake like that man
• You went outside and saw that man still being draged by a girl that you assume is still in junior highschool and a boy that is a little bit older than that girl
• You approach them and smile
• "Um.. , excuse me? Do you want this cake?"

Time Heals
Written for Writer's Month 2021, Day 12 - Time.
Fandom: Gintama Characters/ships: Hijikata/Mitsuba, Hijikata/Tae, Hijikata&Gintoki, Kondou&Sachan Word count: 4396 Rating: T? Also on AO3
They say time heals all wounds. If they haven't healed, there hasn't been enough time.
He already left her behind once. But this time was different. There will be no spicy crackers sent to their headquarters every month. There will be no peeking over Sougo's shoulder while he's reading the letter that came with them. There will be no hope that she'll be able to find her happiness one day despite everything. There will be no chance for him to atone for ruining the only chance at happiness she had got.
Every once in a while Hijikata goes to the stash of crackers she had been sending them and takes a pack. The pile is gradually decreasing — he suspects Sougo is eating them too, although he has never seen him do it.
He bites on one of those crackers and thinks about what he could have done differently. About her spending the decade alone in her house, after everyone she knew and cared about left her behind. He could have stayed with her. They could have taken her with them to Edo. They could have found some way to get her a proper medical treatment…
His vision gets blurry, but he blames it on the damn spice. Because he has no right to cry after everything he had or hadn't done.
He finishes the pack by adding some mayonnaise occasionally. Both his eyes and taste buds burn by that time, but he feels a little bit better. For the time being.
***
It is the middle of the day, and the chief of the Shinsengumi is nowhere to be seen, but there's some minor thing the vice-chief can't do without him. Knowing Kondou's habits, Hijikata goes straight to the Koudoukan doujo. Next stop would be Snack Smile.
There is always a ladder or something else left near the enclosure wall — usually from the back side of the doujo — that Kondou probably used to get in. This time it's a few crates stacked upon each other. He jumps on them and over the wall easily, and, indeed, here he is — the commander of the Shinsengumi, lying unconscious on the grass, no doubt after being discovered hiding under kotatsu or something. The vice-chief doesn't feel sorry for him one bit — his stalker of a superior had it coming.
After a sigh, Hijikata just grabs at the back of Kondou's jacket and drags him towards the exit.
He has done it a few times before — before Mitsuba's death, that is. But now, for some reason, the situation brings the memories of a more distant past — how he dragged Sougo to the doujo practice back in Bushuu.
Passing by the front side of the doujo, he glances at the porch, and for a moment he sees her — Mitsuba — again. Seeing him away, as she used to back then, and smiling. Startled, he even drops the cigarette out from his mouth.
But as sudden as it appeared, the vision goes away, and it's Otae who is sitting on the porch.
"Good afternoon, Hijikata-san," she says to him with a smile. "Good work, as always." But then her face and tone change to concerned as she adds, "Are you alright? You look pale… like you've seen a ghost."
He might as well has seen it.
Hijikata tries to compose himself again, but all he can muster is a nod in response, not even the usual apology for his superior's behavior. He proceeds with dragging Kondou-san away in silence.
For the next two months, he sends Yamazaki on the dragging-Kondou-back duty.
***
He hasn't been to Mitsuba's grave since the funeral. A good chunk of the Shinsengumi was present then, with Kondo and Sougo doing all the speeches, so he just mixed in with the crowd and didn't stand out much.
He brings her a bunch of her favorite flowers. He didn't do anything like this in her life even once. In retrospect, he probably should have. The flowers are of the wild kind, and while in abundance in the countryside, it's not so easy to find them in a big city. But there aren't many impossible things for Hijikata once he sets his mind on something.
He sets them near the gravestone and looks at her name etched on it. Looks at the dates. Thinks how in between those numbers there is an entirety of human life — her life — even if it was a rather short one. Thinks how one day he too will be reduced to just a name and numbers on a stone — and that's a best-case scenario. Thinks that, if he ever gets a proper burial, he would like for it to be here, next to her.
Hijikata barely suppresses the urge to touch the stone. His throat feels strained.
In a hindsight, he should have probably brought the spicy crackers with him. But there are many things he should have done.
Hijikata leaves without saying a word. But his imagination decides to play tricks on him. Because turning away, he catches a glimpse of Mitsuba in the corner of his eye. She looks saddened.
***
It's late autumn, and they are still a bit shorthanded after the Itou incident, and there's no one brave enough and available to get the chief back, so Hijikata goes himself for once.
He hesitates a little bit before getting over the wall. Like a damn thief. Or worse — stalker.
From here it's the usual routine: locate Kondou-san, grab him, pay respects to the hostess, leave.
Otae is sweeping fallen leaves with a broom near the entrance. He raises his hand in a silent greeting.
"Haven't seen you in a while, Hijikata-san," she says with a smile. But there's something else to it. Hesitance? Concern? Sadness? "I'm sorry… Gin-san told me about what happened… I'm sorry for your loss." She bows her head.
Someone has his tongue a bit too loose.
"There's no need…" he starts, but he's unsure of what to say.
"He also told me that I might have reminded you of her. I'm sorry."
That damn Yorozuya!
It is true that the first time — the very first time — he saw Otae, she reminded him faintly of Mitsuba. But he has given it a thorough thought recently and came to a conclusion that the similarities were rather superficial. Both were in charge of their younger brothers after being orphaned, which made them mature faster. There are also devotion to a proper lady image and a slight similarity in the hairstyles. Also the smile, the kind of which makes your heart skip a beat — although he is pretty sure that with Otae it's because of fear half the time. That's about it. Mitsuba was a delicate and humble woman. Meanwhile, Yorozuya calls the Shimura girl a gorilla woman, and he's… not entirely wrong, as much as Hijikata hates to agree with him.
Kondou lets out some grunting noise breaking a rather awkward silence. Talk about gorillas. He seems to be coming about though, so it is time to leave.
"Apologies for the disturbance," Hijikata says as he turns towards the exit.
"Take care," he hears her voice in response, slightly muted.
***
Next time is less awkward. Or so he thinks at first.
"Hijikata-san, you're dropping the ash all over the place," she reprimands him.
It startles him a little bit. But luckily, there's no threat in her voice. He's not quite sure what he can do about it though — it's not like there's a—
"Here." She holds out an ashtray towards him. "I keep it for when someone like Otose-san visits."
Hijikata stands there for a moment, holding Kondou by the back of his collar and looking uncertainly at the object, but then taps the cigarette on the edge of the ashtray, while Otae is still holding it.
Somehow, the gesture feels way too intimate.
***
There are usually several bottles of sake stored under a certain loose piece of flooring back at his quarters. They are there in case he needs some time alone to unwind after an especially stressful day. Or to drown away his sorrow and guilt — like in today's case.
Recently he has relied on his stash perhaps way too often. The amount that usually lasted him for months he now drinks up in a matter of two or three weeks. He has forgotten to restock, so right now there is only one half-empty bottle. Not enough to calm all the intrusive thoughts.
But it's too late into the night, and Hijikata isn't in the mood to go anywhere or deal with anyone, so he will need to make do with what he has. He hopes that it at least will dull the anguish inside of him.
He doesn't even bother with getting a cup, just uncorks the bottle and drinks straight from it.
From the corner of his eye, he can almost see Mitsuba again. She looks concerned. With a hint of disapproval.
***
This time it is tea.
"Oi, Hijikata-san, would you mind joining me for some tea? I prepared too much because I thought Shin-chan and others were coming, but it seems they're running late. We wouldn't want it all go to waste, would we?" Her voice sounds way too innocent. "Please, I insist."
Otae isn't a woman who will take no for an answer, and he isn't feeling very adventurous today, so he props unconscious Kondou's back against the wall of the doujo, and reluctantly joins her at the porch. The ashtray is already waiting at his side as he sits down.
They do some small talk — well, mostly her — about the weather and the sorts of tea — but otherwise sit in silence, sipping on the hot liquid, watching the clouds pass by.
It's not uncomfortable. Rather soothing actually.
Perhaps having a calm moment like this wouldn't hurt every once in a while.
***
Next time when Kondou is missing from the Shinsengumi compound, it is right on time for the quarterly reports, and Hijikata is drowning in the paperwork. Reading a particularly lengthy account of accomplishments, complaints, and suggestions from the 1st Division — Sougo apparently does it on purpose — he finally snaps and goes looking for his chief who is supposed to do at least part of this.
But Kondou is nowhere to be seen at the doujo either. Hijikata has done two circles around the building, checked all the pits, but the usual perpetrator is nowhere to be seen. But Otae is clearly at home today, so her devoted stalker is probably somewhere inside as well. He is starting to lose his patience.
Hijikata cautiously knocks at the main door.
"Excuse me," he starts, trying to suppress the irritation in his tone, but the door slides away too quickly for him to finish, and now he is standing face-to-face with Otae. At a rather close distance. Perhaps too close. He even forgets about being annoyed.
She smiles at him in a greeting, without saying a word, and puts a finger to her lips as in saying "be quiet". The smile on her face is a mischievous one. She gestures for him to go towards the west side of the building. It almost feels like they're accomplices of some sort. But he just wants his chief to get back to work — there's nothing wrong about that.
As Hijikata follows her directions and goes around the building, she slides the door open there and points under the floor. He squats down and looks under it. It's pretty dark out there, and it takes time for his eyes to adapt.
Once they do, he is able to discern two silhouettes lying on the ground facing each other. Now that he listens carefully, he can even hear some muffled sounds and their muted voices. There's also a faint smell of natto and potato chips.
One of the people hiding under the floor is unmistakably Kondou-san. Another seems to be the Glasses Ninja girl who usually follows Yorozuya around. And they're playing Uno of all things. While Hijikata has been buried in paperwork in a stuffy room back at the headquarters. His blood is about to boil.
"Sarutobi-san..." Otae meanwhile has bent over the wooden flooring to peek under it, her body half-suspended upside down.
The two stalker buddies turn right away. Their faces are pale like they've seen a ghost.
"I wondered why we had problems with rats recently," Otae continues, "but perhaps it is because of all the food crumbs the two of you are leaving around."
"Kondou-san," Hijikata says in turn, trying to sound polite despite the anger, "if you're feeling bored, there's plenty of reports for you to read back at the Shinsengumi compound." He is grabbing at the hilt of his katana. Otae has already jumped to the ground next to him — he doesn't even ponder on when she has managed to get her naginata.
But the ninja is fast. She grabs Kondou by the collar and swiftly crawls away in a perpendicular direction. By the time he and Otae catch up to them near the other side of the building, the so-called Sarutobi-san is already jumping over the wall carrying the chief of the Shinsengumi with her arms under his knees and back.
Hijikata lets out a sigh.
"Any idea where they might have headed?"
~~ Intermission 1 - Sachan ~~
She was hoping to find Gin-san at the doujo today, especially after he loudly proclaimed such an intention yesterday.
But it seems there's only Otae-san now, doing the chores in the yard, not even her brother or Kagura-chan are hanging around. And Sachan doesn't even have any work today to busy herself with.
While thinking of what to do, hanging on the ceiling, she hears a rustling sound from somewhere under the floor. Perhaps Otae isn't completely alone after all.
Avoiding being noticed by the hostess, Sachan crawls under the floor, and indeed, Kondo-san is also on duty today — well, not on his proper duty duty — snacking on some potato chips and watching Otae's feet from afar. She decides to sneak up on him. It is so easy to startle him that she has to forcefully cover his mouth so as to not betray their presence.
"Ah, it's you, Assassin girl," he says in a muffled voice.
"You seem to be bored."
"I'm not bored, just taking a break!"
"Do you want to play some Uno?"
They start playing, but the chief of the Shinsengumi seems to be as unlucky in games as he is in love. Which, of course, gets him frustrated. She occasionally forcibly covers his mouth again to prevent him from getting too loud.
Suddenly, while they are still engrossed in another round of the game, her instincts kick in, and Sachan feels some sort of dangerous presence. Perhaps, even a killing intent.
"Sarutobi-san..." she hears a very familiar voice, as if right on cue.
Sachan turns to the voice — Otae's head is upside down as she is looking at their hideout under the floor — menacing aura and all. But she's not alone. There is also the Demonic Vice-Chief of the Shinsengumi right beside her, looking angry and just as his nickname suggests. Each of them alone would look like pretty bad news right now, but together... they are like a match made in Hell.
Sachan doesn't even hear what they have to say, her self-preservation instincts taking over, and all her senses telling her to run. She grabs Kondou-san by the collar of his jacket — in an act of solidarity, or perhaps she has already grown rather fond of him to just leave him behind in the imminent danger — and retreats.
Jumping from roof to roof, with protesting Kondou in her arms, she thinks that her love rival and the vice-chief actually look rather good together. She wonders what is the relationship between the two.
Sachan drops the chief of the Shinsengumi off at his headquarters. Literally. Through the roof.
~~ Intermission ends ~~
Next time Hijikata is unlucky enough to come just before lunch.
She sees him from the east side of the building even before he's able to find Kondou-san. Out of courtesy, he comes closer to ask her. But his stomach betrays him in a rather loud voice.
"Oh my, Hijikata-san, you must be hungry. We are actually about to have some tamagoyaki. Why don't you join us?"
Oh, shit, the infamous abused eggs. They are slowly becoming a local legend. Of the horror kind.
"No, I'm in a hurry actually…"
"Oh… But you can't work on an empty stomach, can you? Wait here, I will bring you some." And she rushes back inside before he even has a chance to stop her.
Hijikata ponders on how rude it would be to refuse now. And what body part he should protect from the punch. But before he comes to any conclusion, she's already back with a small plate and a radiant smile on her face.
Otae doesn't take no for an answer. But he isn't even capable of saying no to such an enthusiastic face. Perhaps because he just has difficulties saying no to women in general. Yes, that must be it.
It's just burnt eggs, how bad could it be? Not to mention he has his emergency bottle of mayonnaise with him.
~~ Intermission 2 - Gintoki ~~
"Look, he's about to put mayonnaise on it!" Kagura lets out a loud whisper, peeking through a slightly open sliding door. "Ew!"
"Shh, maybe it will cancel out somehow. The more he eats the less we will need to. Until Shinpachi makes some normal food." Gintoki's head is just above hers, as he's peeping in the next room as well. He is expecting Otae to stop Hijikata from desecrating already desecrated eggs any moment now.
But it never comes.
"He's eating it!" Kagura exclaims.
Hijikata is sitting with his back towards them, so they can't see his face. But lately, the vice-chief of the Shinsengumi has been looking… not his best. He has reasons for moping around, but it has already been like half a year since the death of Okita's sister.
Like you're the one to talk when it comes to coping.
They keep watching as Hijikata finishes his plate, without either choking or puking. He is about to return the plate and doesn't even look like he's in a dire need of a bathroom.
"Hijikata-san, you need to take better care of yourself. If not for yourself, then for people who care about you," Gintoki hears Otae's quiet voice suddenly.
Says the woman who is about to give him a food poisoning.
"There are fewer and fewer people like that lately," Hijikata responds in a bit of a grave voice after some pause.
As he returns the plate, their hands — Otae's and Hijikata's — touch. The man freezes.
"You're… mistaken," she responds. There's seemingly an eye contact, and the vice-chief looks somewhat surprised.
Gintoki hears Kagura hold her breath and lean in a bit closer. Like she's sometimes doing when watching a romance drama.
Coming to his senses, Hijikata is visibly flustered and suddenly in a rush to leave. So much that he almost drops the plate. But still, it doesn't look like diarrhea is the cause.
"It seems Kondou-san is not here today… So I'll be on my way… Thank you for the meal." The vice-chief bows exaggeratedly and turns away to leave.
"Here goes our hope of salvation," says Gintoki after Hijikata isn't in sight anymore, but the possibility of food poisoning isn't what occupies his mind at the moment.
Otae hasn't moved from her place yet.
Kagura turns away from the door. She seems to be contemplating something. Perhaps processing what she has just seen. Gintoki follows and can't help but plunge into thinking as well.
Meanwhile, Kondou slides from under the kotatsu, looking rather sleepy.
"Has someone called me?"
~~ Intermission ends ~~
It is late into the night, and the silence seems too loud again. Hijikata is thinking about opening up his stash — he has restocked recently after all.
He gets one bottle out and is looking at the label, contemplating.
People that care about me, huh?
Kondou's concerned face comes to his mind. Sougo hasn't tried to kill him as much lately either. He remembers Yamazaki and his other subordinates exchanging glances when he was shouting at them while still being hungover. Even Yorozuya hasn't been as cocky when they happen to cross paths lately.
You're… mistaken.
Eventually, he decides to put the bottle back.
Perhaps a cup of tea might be better.
As he's about to head towards the kitchen, Hijikata catches a glimpse of Mitsuba in the corner of his eye again, but the vision disappears as soon as he turns his head.
He's pretty sure there has been a trace of a smile on her face this time.
***
It's early spring and another drag-Kondou-back-to-work day.
Hijikata is making a circle around the Koudoukan doujo in search of his superior. He's about to pass by the main entrance, expecting to see the irresistible — as in you have no chance of resistance — owner and her charming smile.
But it's Yorozuya's uncouth mug instead.
"Yo," he says simply.
Hijikata gets startled.
"What are you doing here?"
"Were you expecting to see someone else, eh, Hijikata-kun?" says the silver-haired samurai in his insufferable tone. "Someone prettier maybe? With a ponytail maybe? Am I not enough for you, Hijikata-kun?" He pauses but then adds with an even more shit-eating grin than before, "How were the tamagoyaki last time?"
Hijikata is reminded of accidentally touching Otae's hand instead.
You're… mistaken.
"I… You…" He is considerably flustered — there's no way around that — but for what reason?
"She went out to buy some groceries. Must be back soon," Yorozuya adds simply, picking at his nose, not even looking at him.
Hijikata calms down — more or less — and just goes past the other man, intending to proceed with his search.
"You know… if there's such thing as Heaven" — there's seriousness in Gintoki's voice that makes Hijikata stop in his tracks — "she probably just wants for you to be happy. Just as you did for her."
He remembers Mitsuba's concerned face conjured by his imagination.
"I know," he responds out loud without facing the other. But in actuality, it is a rather fresh thought in his mind.
"You wouldn't want to disappoint her, would you?"
He didn't think of it like that before. Not explicitly, at least.
"Anyway, the Gorilla should be just around this corner. Otae has knocked him out just before leaving," Yorozuya says in a more casual tone.
Hijikata finds Kondou-san just where he was told. He grabs his superior by the collar and proceeds to the exit, raising a hand in goodbye to Yorozuya, still without facing him. The vice-chief's mind is deep in thought.
As he's turning out of the gate, Hijikata comes face-to-face with Otae. Again.
She's smiling radiantly. While he feels like he's getting flustered for the second time today.
"Good afternoon, Hijikata-san. Are you leaving already?"
He only manages to say something barely intelligible in response. He can almost hear Yorozuya laughing.
"Too bad… Thank you for your hard work anyway."
He nods and proceeds with dragging Kondou-san away past her. There are a lot of things on his mind.
***
He comes to visit Mitsuba again.
He brings her a bunch of her favorite flowers. He always forgets their name, so there are certain difficulties when talking to the florists, but he is persistent in trying to describe them to the best of his ability. There aren't many impossible things for Hijikata once he sets his mind on something after all.
The grave is well tended to — Sougo must be visiting much more often than he is. And he better be.
He sets the flowers near the gravestone and looks at her name etched on it.
"Long time no see."
That's not exactly true. She has come to him — to his mind — quite often, almost every time he was left alone.
Hijikata sits down in front of the grave and starts talking.
He starts with little things: the stuff that has happened recently, how is Sougo doing, how are Kondou and the others.
He talks, and talks, and talks.
He bows his head and apologizes for not visiting sooner, and more often in general. He voices all of his regrets. The things he should have done. Apologizes for both the things he had done and the things he hadn't.
He promises to take good care of Sougo.
He tells her of all the connections they have made since coming to Edo. Yamazaki. Matsudaira and his daughter. Yorozuya. The Shimura siblings. Tells her of the weird rivalry Sougo has with the China Amanto girl. How their days are almost never dull.
He tells her all this so she doesn't have to worry. So she can rest in peace.
In the end, he asks her permission for him to move on. Not to forget — because her image will forever be ingrained in his heart. But he also feels that there is still some place for others too. To move on, for the sake of the people who depend on him. Who — just so happened — care about him, as hard as it is for him to acknowledge this.
Then Hijikata sits in silence, with his head down, for a long, long time, as if indeed waiting for someone to answer.
When, in the end, he stands up, he feels lighter. Like the cage around his chest has finally broken.
"I will bring the crackers next time," he says with a smile before turning away to leave. After a few paces, he stops and slightly turns back to look at the grave.
He sees Mitsuba in the corner of his eye again. She is holding the flowers and smiling. He intends to keep it that way.
***
The spring is in full force now, and the trees are blooming.
He doesn't remember when he stopped even thinking of sending someone else to retrieve the chief of the Shinsengumi from the Koudoukan doujo.
For once, he decides to enter through the front entrance.
It doesn't take long for Otae to notice him. She's already waving at him. And, of course, smiling. And he cannot but smile — just a little bit — back.
They say time heals all wounds. If they haven't healed, there hasn't been enough time. Or the right words haven't been said yet. Or, more importantly, heard.

Working at Shinsengumi was exhausting. There wasn’t a single day where you didn’t have nothing to do. Most of your days went with investigating the rebels and trying to locate them down to capture their leader, Katsura.
At nights, no matter how much you wanted, you couldn’t leave the headquarters, nobody could unless it was related to work. Because of the new regulations vice commander came up with after the mission on the mountains, you were obligated to sleep in the Shinsengumi headquarters and you were on duty almost every day except Sundays.
Everyone hated the new system but the vice commander said it was necessary to stay in the headquarters at night considering if the government wanted a quick response from the force when they called for help.
In short, you had become a literal dog of the government, you had no social life or friends outside of work.
The work was stressful enough but ever since you had started dating the Yorozuya’s boss, you have been having it extra difficult to have time for yourself. Nowadays, you couldn’t slack off from work to see Gintoki so you always spend Sundays with him whenever you could.
He often complained about your new work schedule and kept insisting on you letting him sneak into your room at night so you two could be alone together. But you refused his wishes since if the vice commander were to spot him in the headquarters, both of you would be in trouble for real this time.
Considering how busy your new schedule was, a Friday night out with your friends was all you needed after working non-stop for months now. Today was important because it was your first day off from Shinsengumi in months and you had been yearning to see your friends for so long.
You were catching up with your best friend in the bathroom as your friend’s boyfriend was buying drinks for everyone.
“Let me see it!” you clung to your friend’s wrist to look at the bracelet she got from her boyfriend. She showed it off with a big smile on her face, as expected it was an expensive piece. With a sigh, you retrieved your hand.
“Jealous?” Your friend was the only person who knew about your relationship with the useless and unemployed samurai boyfriend. She knew that Gintoki wouldn’t be able to afford anything her boyfriend bought her.
“Yes,” you giggled, fixing your hair as you talked, “but not jealous of the bracelet. I wish Gin was here.”
Your friend patted on your back, grinning from ear to ear. “Break up with that guy.”
“You’re so supportive, thanks!” You pushed her hand away. “It’s not funny, I haven’t seen him in so long.”
After a moment of silence, she changed the subject. “How’s it living with over a dozen men in a compound?”
You fidgeted your fingers while she fixed her dress. “You see, they’re all very friendly but the vice commander is so brutal.”
Her expression changed, “Hijikata?” she spoke while laughing. “He’s so damn handsome, it cancels out every bad thing he does.”
“Ah, well… he’s handsome but he won’t let my boyfriend see me or let me go out to see him even for five minutes.”
“Well, dump him then.” Your friend wasn’t surprised. “Sakata didn’t join us because of what? His terrorist friend is in town? He’s useless, he’s not worth your time.”
“You’re so mean,” you pouted, crossing your arms over your chest.
It wasn’t Gintoki’s fault he couldn’t be here. If only Katsura wasn’t injured, surely he would have joined you to have fun with your friends.
(But then why had you heard from Otae that Gintoki’s old friends were at his place and how they were planning to hang out?)
“That’s just the truth,” she murmured.  “And won’t his terrorist friends get you in trouble? You could lose your job if your boss found out about how close you are with his friends and all.”
You didn’t answer her because she was right. If someone found out about your connections to the enemy, you would have to commit seppuku.
Five rounds of drinks were all you needed to forget about everything though. Your friend and her boyfriend were already dancing on the dance floor together. You had promised to join them once you were done with your drink but somehow with each sip you took from your drink, you wanted to go home.
It was a first. You had never wanted to go home this early before, you weren’t sure if it was because of how tired you were or your friend’s harsh comments about your boyfriend but you weren’t having fun.
This night out was supposed to help you loosen up and enjoy yourself yet you weren’t even enjoying your drink.
Decidedly, you went home once your friends returned to the booth you were sitting in.
The street was mostly empty, and it was freezing cold, you had planned on walking back but as cold the weather was, it was better to take a cab. So you frantically waved your arm to hail a taxi off the empty city street. Slowly a yellow taxi cab rolled to a stop and you sunk in.
“Where to, ma’am?” came a suave voice. You rubbed your temples, “Uh, to…” you tried to remember. “Yorozu-” you stopped yourself from finishing the sentence. Gintoki was with his own friends tonight, you didn’t want to disturb him. “Shinsengumi headquarters.”
He hummed in acknowledgment as the car rolled forward. Not more than five minutes, you were in front of the main entrance. You took out your purse, paid the cab driver and thanked him before going inside, trying to look sober to tonight’s guards by the door.
You laughed to yourself once they let you in. Kicking off your shoes, you stumbled around until you made it to the main building’s hall.
Swinging around and trying to be quiet, you walked down the hall, making your way to your room.
Cheerful voices coming from the meeting room echoed through the hall. Now, you had to be extra careful to not make a noise. If you were caught sneaking around, those who were partying in the meeting room would drag you in to join them. And although you enjoyed partying with them, you didn’t want to ruin the mood with your current problems.
Your stomach wouldn’t stop growling and rumbling, aching to have something to digest, other than the alcohol you’ve been drinking. Your head started spinning, you had to get to your room before you passed out in the hall.
Sliding open the door to your room felt so refreshing and promising since your head spinning had worsened from when it first started. Walking carefully, you tried to find the light switch in the pitch dark of your room. Finally, with a soft click, you turned on the lights.
A surprised gasp left your lips when you saw your futon that was supposed to be in your closet, prepared on the floor with someone sleeping in it. With the silver fluffy curly hair sticking out from under the sheets, it was easy to tell who it was.
 “Gintoki?” you called out.
 He didn’t respond.
You walked over to him, crouching down and pulling the blanket down. He was asleep.
You had no idea how he snuck inside or why he was here. But he had to go back. Gintoki being here meant trouble for both of you.
“Ugh,” you grimaced, he reeked of alcohol and tobacco. Although you didn’t smell any better, Gintoki smelled nastier than usual. After covering your mouth with your hand you shook him. “Gintoki, you need to go home.”
He suddenly pulled you in his arms. You squeaked in surprise but kept it quiet when you remembered how thin the walls were.
“You’re not even happy I’m here, what kinda bullshit girlfriend are ya?” So, he was faking to be asleep just to play around.
“I’m happy to see you but you can’t be here.” you struggled in his strong arms, argh he was too strong. “And I need to take a bath. I reek of sweat and alcohol.”
Gintoki laced his fingers with yours and quickly took you under him, slamming your hands down to the futon over your head.
You gasped softly when he buried his face to the crook of your neck. “You smell good to me,” he brushed his lips against your pulse point.
“Stop sniffing me!” you snarled at him nervously. “Now, get off me. Someone could find out you’re here-”
Gintoki clicked his tongue. “Honestly, don’t you think it’s more exciting that way?” he asked. Then he pulled himself back to watch your reactions.
Finally getting a good look at him you noticed that he was wearing the Shinsengumi uniform. Not the one you wore. It looked more like the-
 “Vice commander’s uniform?”
“Ah, this?” Gintoki smirked. “It looks much better on me, right? I thought we could roleplay as the commander and his underling who needs to let him fuck her to keep her position as-”
“That’s too specific!” you snapped. “Hijikata will kill us, you have to take it off!”
Gintoki’s smirk grew wider, “Oh? So you want me to strip?”
You made a small noise of embarrassment, which was all Gintoki was looking for to continue.
“Gotcha!” He let go of your hands, leaning over you to peck on your lips. He used a hand to pull you closer and fondled your tits over your shirt with the other. You arched your back, wrapping your arms around his neck almost immediately.
He pushed his tongue inside to part your lips. Luckily he didn’t waste too much time kissing you on the lips. His hands moved south, one hand groping your ass and the other decidedly going inside your shirt.
“I’ve missed you,” he whispered, earning a silent chuckle from you. “Did you miss me too?” he moaned into your ear as his fingers teased your nipples, hoping to get some cute moans from you.
When that didn’t work, Gintoki pressed his growing bulge to your groin, rubbing himself shamelessly onto you.
“Gin, it hurts,” you whispered. The pants’ fabric was too rough, the friction gave him pleasure but possible skin rashes to you.
“It hurts,” you told him again, trying to politely suggest that he should stop but he chuckled and started humping you more roughly.
His cock underneath his pants was hard enough for you to be able to feel it throbbing against your clothed sex.
“Asshole.” No matter how thick the fabric of the pants was, you had managed to soak it up with your own juices. You lifted your hips to show him exactly where you wanted him to grind on.
“I can’t hear you,” he laughed. Given the new position with you lifting your hips up for him, it was easier for him to grind you down onto the futon with a little too much force.
 “It fucking hurts dumbass!”
Gintoki covered your mouth with his hand. “Too much.” he whispered, “You’re letting your voice out, someone will hear.” He kept the fast pace going, though. “Or could it be that you want that guy to find us again?”
You gasped to his hand covering your mouth with Hijikata’s image coming into your mind and Gintoki responded with a long, pleased hum. “You do?”
Shaking your head, you spread your legs wider. It felt good, his thrusts and the friction of the fabrics now felt amazingly good, weird, it could be because of you remembering what had happened in the mountains.
Gintoki let out a low hiss. His hips started to move more jerkily and his pace faltered entirely. He pressed himself onto your clothed pussy as hard as he could before his entire body stiffened.
You tried to ignore the feeling of the warm yet sticky wetness soaking up your pants along with his own. From the way, he grinned you could tell he was unbothered by the fact that he came inside the pants. Hopefully, he’ll wash them and leave them to dry so vice commander wouldn’t notice-
He threw himself to your side, closing his eyes as if he was about to fall asleep.
 Or not.
 “You’re hopeless,” you sighed.
“I love you too!” He wrapped an arm around you to pull you closer. “We should do this often. Next time you should come to my place in your uniform and we’ll roleplay as the anti-foreigner rebel and Shinsengumi-”
“What’s up with the oddly specific roleplays?” you laughed. The stickiness and the ugly stench were unbearable but you chose to ignore it as you snuggled up to Gintoki. “Did you pick that up from Sougo?” you asked since Okita used to ask you extremely specific questions like this.
“Soichiro? No?” Gintoki pressed a kiss on your lips, still trying to catch his breath. “It’s definitely Soichiro who’s copying me.”
“It’s Sougo,” you corrected with a giggle. “Ah, I’ve missed you.” Unable to keep your eyes open, you put your head on his chest. “Goodnight.”
Gintoki smiled to himself, you were efficiently telling him to stay.
 “Goodnight.”

Gintoki In Wonderland
Chapter 5/5
Everyone was panicking and was all around the place, trying to put out the fire and while escaping the deadly footsteps of the Jabberwocky. Gintoki, who was dragged by the witch and was now riding on his invisible broom, looked down on the chaos the witch and that small peddler did. He was even surprised when looking at the Jabberwocky closely, it looks like Kondo.
“Now, Snow White, no, your name is Gintoki, I was informed by the white rabbit, there is something you must do, right?” The witch then patted Gintoki on the back.
“Zura.” Gintoki replied. Though he was expecting a retort, he just smiled and jumped off from the broom and landed on the back of the Jabberwocky. “By the way, I’m forgetting something, again right?” Gintoki muttered. “How am I supposed to defeat this Gorilla, if I do not have my bokutooooo.” He shouted as he tried to cling onto the Jabberwocky’s back. The monster kept on reaching him but to no avail.
“You! Mayo guy and sadist!” he called out the siblings who were still putting out fire from the curtains. “Do you have any weapons?”
“Who are you calling mayo?! My name’s Hansel! All my mayonnaise was thrown away!” retorted Hansel. “Oi, Gretel, where is your candy cane?”
“Huh? I have it with—” Gretel turned around to look for his cane and he found it, crushed and eaten by the female dwarf.
“You glutton dwarf!” Gretel attacked with a punch the female dwarf, but it was avoided. The two then started fighting.
Seeing all of them, even in another world, Gintoki felt like he was still in his world. They were still a bunch of idiots. And he liked it. Just as he was getting a weapon from one of the swords that were pierced on the gorilla’s back, he was captured by the gorilla and he was about to be eaten alive. But he suddenly felt something inside his pocket. It was the purple apple. He threw the apple onto the gorilla’s mouth and the gorilla started to choke. Gintoki was set free from the grasp of the Gorilla, however, he fell straight onto the Gorilla’s mouth.
Gintoki went pale. “Seriously?”
Inside the Gorilla’s body, all he can see was darkness.
“…in-chan! Gin-chan!”
“…Gin-san!”
Tumblr media
He was hearing some voices. He woke up with a start and found himself back in his house, in his world. Just as he was adjusting from the weird dream that he had, before him were Kagura and Shinpachi, grinning at him.
“Happy Birthday Gin-chan!!!!”
“Happy Birthday to you Gin-san!!!”
The two suddenly popped some party poppers, and in an instant, everyone barged into the door.
“Aho no Sakata! Where are the drinks at?!”
“Free drinks. Yatta!” Madao and Catherine happily drink the sake Otose brought over.
“Don’t just finish the drinks by yourselves!” Otose smacked Catherine head. “Just this month, I’ll waive off your rent. But be sure to pay up next month.” She told Gintoki and puffed smoke towards the ceiling.
“Gintoki-sama, Happy t—”
“Hey Tama, do not mention his age. Even the Gorilla mangaka did not specify his age. Everyone will be upset to hear his age, aru.”
“Kagura-chan, no need to mention it, right? We already know what he’s like. It’s no surprise at all.”
“That’s right Shin-chan. Here, Gin-san, your present. My new recipe, egg pancake.”
“Otae-san!! I want to eat that—!” Kondo tried snatching the gift but was punched by Otae.
“Kyu-chan, and Tsukuyo-san, you two have something to give Gin-san, right?”
“Ah yes, well, this one is from my grandfather.” Kyubei handed Gintoki a box and inside it was a sandpaper.
“That old man still hasn’t forgotten about that episode?!” Gintoki gritted his teeth, in irritation.
“Gintoki, Happy Birthday. Don’t be mistaken. This is not o-only from me. This is from all of us in Yoshiwara.” Tsukuyo stammered and threw at Gintoki the VIP card present.
“It’s your birthday huh Yorozuya? Well, it’s not like I wanted to drop by, but Kondo-san insisted that we do. Here.” Hijikata, squeezed some mayonnaise on the cake before Gintoki. “Desserts are better with mayonnaise.”
“Hell no! Who would want to eat that shit?!” Gintoki threw the cake at Hijikata, but Hijikata used Yamazaki as a shield.
“Danna, I’m sorry about Hijikata-san. Here, try throwing another cake.” Sougo tied Hijikata to a log and positioned him in front of Gintoki.
“Ohhhh. Thank You Soji-kun.” Gintoki grabbed another cake and aimed the cake at Hijikata’s face.
“It’s Sougo.”
“Oi! Sougo! Untie me Sougo! You sadist combo!!”
“Ahahaha. Kintoki! Happy Birthday!!! Here’s your gift—Blurgh!” Sakamoto puked as soon as he barged in through the veranda and sent Hijikata flying outside.
“Gin-sannnn!!! Happy Birthday!!!” Another usual entrance, Sacchan, came down from the ceiling. She was about to hug Gin-san but since she lost her glasses, she hugged Sadaharu instead. And of course, Sadaharu chomped her head playfully, like the usual.
Everyone seemed to be in high spirits. A drunk Tsukuyo and Catherine beat up Madao; Sacchan’s still can’t get away from Sadaharu that Otae and Kyubei must pull her out forcefully; Sougo and Kagura fight over the last slice of cake, while Kondo stops a disheveled Hijikata from attacking Sougo; Yamazaki and Shinpachi quietly eat the remaining sausages at one corner; Sakamoto and Gintoki continued drinking, that Otose got angry at them for finishing the alcohol by themselves and Tama, being a robot maid, cleans up their barf; wiping off the floors and their filthy mouths using the same mop, much to the duo’s annoyance.
Meanwhile, Mutsu, ignores all the chaos around her, and nonchalantly gave Gintoki a big box. “We really had a tough time looking for this.”
Gintoki was about to open the box when the chaos behind him subdued. Curious, he turned around and saw everyone was staring at the door. He squeezed through the crowd to get to the door. Standing before him, the cause of the everyone’s astonishment, was the Gorilla mangaka.
The mangaka handed Gintoki a card. Confused as to why the Gorilla gave out a card instead of a letter through its nose, Gintoki reluctantly, accepted the card.
He flipped the card onto the other side.
“Sorry, I’m not that mangaka. The real Sorachi sensei is busy with the upcoming film next year. I’m just a double who wanted to congratulate you, Gintoki-san on your birthday. And to remind everyone, that the next day, October 11, is the birthday of your seiyuu, Sugita Tomokazu-san.”
Everyone’s faces went blank, and one by one, they started going home, including the ‘fake’ gorilla, who felt like he just stepped into some landmine, leaving the Yorozuya trio and their house in mayhem.
THE END.

Gintama chapter 704 translation
Chapter 704: “There’s no such thing as a good guy with perm head”
Under the cut
Page 1
Katsura: Gintoki! Takasugi! Can you hear my transmission!! Where are you right now? Are you alright? We have taken over this ship and in the process of eliminating the rest of the enemy; they are at the state of complete annihilation. But the terminal’s berserk won’t stop! It’s just a matter of time until it blew itself up along with this plane, you have to escape quickly!
Page 2
Sakamoto: Zura! We can’t run either! If the terminal goes down, the Altana’s berserk will only get worse! That would spell the end for this planet as well! Those who are still alive have to deal with that thing somehow!
Katsura: But do we have any way of doing that?
?: There… is…
?: Can you please… allow me… handle the things here…
Katsura: Who is…
Katsura: You are….
Shouyou: This berserk happened because the sucking up far too great a quantity of Altana using the enemy’s weapon.
Page 3
Shouyou: Which means, if we can reverse its flow we can let the Altana collide with an equally strong force. Turn this great quanityty of Altana back to the Terminal by destroying the weaponry. Using the Altana inside of me as the trigger.
Shouyou: But even if we stop the berserk that way, this terminal won’t come out unscratched. Can I trust you with the evacuation, my prodigious student? I do not want to allow for more victims than there already are. If it’s you, then I can entrust this task.
Shouyou: All of you.... please… go and live.
Page 4
Shouyou: Just as you heard, please leave this place…
Shinpachi: Shouyou-sensei… you
Shouyou: //coughs blood
Shinpachi: …! Sensei!
Shouyou:  …….
Shouyou: How very ironic. That I, who bear eternity, am now trying to stretch what time I have left. And I understand very well, the meaning of why he gave what remained of that fragile life.
Page 5:
Shouyou: I am a failure of a teacher, one who cannot even protect his students. That’s why I must protect the future that they weaved… I have to protect all of you.
Shouyou: My one thousand years of life might exist solely for this moment. This is the first time that I honestly think… I want to live a bit longer. Please give me more time, even if just one second.
Page 6:
Shinpachi: one second will not be enough. If one person can only bear that one second
Kagura: then if we combine the life of every one
Shinpachi: Then you will have enough time to at least see your student’s stupid face.
Shouyou: …! You all--!
Shinpachi: I’m sorry, Shouyou-sensei. As I thought we cannot leave just like that. Because if we do, we will no longer be Yorozuya.
Page 7
Shinpachi: Haven’t we said?
Kagura: That the Yorozuya will work until the payment is received?
Shinpachi: If there is a future, then we will not want someone to give it to us. We Yorozuya will doggedly take it by our own hands.
Page 8
Shouyou: All of you…
Kyuubei: Then we will accompany you.
Sacchan: It seems like in order to create an immortal, the cult has collected Altana from various planets.
Kyuubei: If we destroy all this, you can even hit your idiot student and not just look at him,
Shinpachi: Everyone!
Zenzo: Saying we’ll destroy it is fine and all but how are we supposed to do that? Let me tell you, the only type of cellphones I can use is the ancient ones.
Mobcop: We can no longer follow the current pace of modern technology
Zenzo: Is that something a person completely made of tech should say???
Nobume: If it’s cellphones then just leave it to me.
Sacchan: People and pieces of techs are the same. When they just don’t want to listen…
Page 9
Girls: You do this to them!
Zenzou: Ooooooiiiii you tomboy bitches!! This is no longer at the level of communication jamming! It’s now at the level where Siri would give it her all to shower you in boos and jeers!!
Tsukuyo: It will reach. If we gather this many feelings, it will certainly reach even without a phone.
Page 10
Shinpachi: This—this is--! A huge amount of Altana is flowing in!
Shinpachi: Shouyou-sensei, if you want to destroy it then this is the chance!
Kagura: Sadaharu! Protect Shouyou!
Shouyou: All of you… why… why…
Page 11
Hijikata: yo. You’re late, we almost left without you.
Gintoki: You guys…
Hijikata: Evacuating citizens is also the work of police force.
Kondo: My god, if there are unreasonably stubborn guys like you around, our work will get way harder.
Okita: Sorry but I’m not interested in kicking the bucket together. The only choice left is to go home, side-by-side.
Hijikata: Get up and let’s go.
Page 12
Katsura: Gintoki. Just a bit more. Ahead of that, sensei… and the Yorozuya will be there. If you have anything else to do, wrap it up quick.
Gintoki: Is that okay with you? Isn’t the prodigy of Shouka Sonjuku entrusted to make sure everyone come home safe?
Katsura: The evacuation is over, the only ones remaining is you troublemaker lot.
Gintoki: Zura… Takasugi is…
Katsura: Maybe sensei just doesn’t understand. Every time you troublemakers make a mess back then, there’s one more troublemaker who stepped up and wiped your asses. Isn’t that right Gintoki? So when it comes to Takasugi’s… to the final trouble the two of you stir up, the one who gotta wipe your asses later can’t move from this place.
Page 13
Gintoki: Zura…
Sakamoto: Dying or living, we’ll go together I guess… if it’s like this then there’s no choice but to come back alive. But don’t worry. I will come and save you, even from the deepest bowels of hell.
Sakamoto: That’s why go and make as great a fuss as you wish. Make a big one for his part too.
Page 14
Shouyou: Gintoki…
Page 15
Shouyou: The people here… for you they are what you are to me, aren’t they?
Page 17
Shouyou: That day… the eternal demon met you… met all of you and was able to become Yoshida Shouyou.
Page 18
Shouyou: Since that day… the small demon with such sorrowful eyes gained many meetings
Page 19
Shouyou: And was able to become Sakata Gintoki
Page 20
Shinpachi: Shouyou-sensei!!!
Page 22
Gintoki: Shouyou. I always wanted to show you. A lot of things happened since then. And I…
Page 23
Gintoki: I worked as Yorozuya with these guy.
Shouyou: Yes… I see it.
Page 24
Shouyou: Yorozuya. Sakata Gintoki. You have become… such a good man…
Page 26
Small Tama: Data transfer is completed. Good morning, Fuyou Iizerogou.
Page 27
Tama: This place is…
Small Tama:  This is Gengai-sama’s workshop. Ever since the war, you have been asleep for a very long time. I am your clone, Tamako, whose job is to gather data in your place during that time.
Tama: I’m sorry… I still… my circuits is still out of order. How long have I been asleep for?
Tama: Is this… Edo…?
Tama: No, right now this place is called Tokyo. After the last battle, Edo has seen many great changes and was reborn.
Page 28
Small Tama: Without everyone’s hard work, this Tokyo wouldn’t have come into existence. Yes… the world has regained peace.
Tama: And yet… it seems like the world that I know no longer exist. After that, what happened to everyone…?
Small Tama: The answer to that question is already inside of you.
?: -san… Tama-san…
?: I wonder when you will wake up and receive this data.
Tama: This voice... Shinpachi-sama? And is this the old Edo?
Shinpachi: Since that day, we still don’t know what we fought, with whom we fought. Or just what we lost and what we won.
Page 29
Shinpachi: But we returned home. To Edo. To the everyday life. And yet from the lonely smile I saw on Gin-san’s face that day, I feel that the amount of what we regained and what we lost…
Shinpachi: It seems… they won’t come back after all.
Page 30
Shinpachi: Aaaaaaaa!!! Where the hell are you sleeping Gin-saaaan! It stinks—I stepped on puke!! Just when I thought I’m not gonna be seeing your face for a while you went off and had a drink, didn’t you!!
Gintoki: Agh so noisy. This is my home. I can come back whenever I like and throw up wherever I like—gogogogoo
Shinpachi: Wait!! Don’t make more of a mes—gogogogo
Gintoki: And why are you sitting nonchalantly on the president’s seat
Shinpachi: The hell you’re talking about! The one who supported the Yorozuya while everyone’s gone is the leader! Didn’t you say you will start from the very bottom of the rungs?!
Gintoki: I didn’t say it. And didn’t you say you will start over, beginning from your glasses frame?
Shinpachi: I didn’t!! Why don’t you start over from your dad’s ballsacks?!
Gintoki: You start over from you dad’s glasses case
Shinpachi: That’s just dad’s glasses then!! And if you’re gonna sleep, sleep properly on the futon!!
Page 31:
Kagura: Don’t come into a lady’s room! How many times should I tell you this is no longer Gin-chan’s room! This is the room of the vice-president, who returned second after the president!
Shinpachi: Yeah… but vice-president, your president flew because of that kick as well...
Kagura: In all companies, presidents are nothing but decoration where short beards can grow. The real power usually belong to the strong ones, in the end the people with the most physical strengths hold the world in their palms.
Shinpachi: No… the super strong is not even super strong and not even the vice-president.
Kagura: Well, just he just won’t be responsible then just beat the responsibility into him as hard as you can.
Shinpachi: Even if the one doing it is a super-powered hercules it still can’t be done!!
Gintoki: Cut it out you two!! Just where is my place to belong now? Since it came to this, let’s just begin everything back from the markingssss----rruururururuu
Shinpachi: We’ll kill you, you bastard!!!
Shinpachi: …even so, I think the reason we can still be ourselves with nary a change like this is because there is three people and one dog here.
Page 32:
Otose: My, my… since it’s been two years I thought you all would have piled up enough money to pay the rent. But looking at those faces, seems like all you did these past two years are digging your noses.
Gintoki: I’m thinking about leaving the rent in the new president’s care.
Shinpachi: Don’t just push off that role when it benefits you…
Kagura: Alright, leave it to Leader! I’ll handle the right hole, Gin-chan handle the left. And then there’s Shinpachi.
Shinpachi: You bastards aren’t doing anything but picking noses, are you?!
Otose: I thought both Shinpachi and Kagura have grown up, but it seems like they all just went back to how they were when you returned.
Catherine: One spoiled apple would spoil the entire barrel, after all.
Gintoki: I’m more of the sweetness of canned fruits person than barrel person.
Gengai: I see. When it comes to canned stuff, the rot don’t spread out easily after all.
Gintoki: Can the person one step away from rotting just stop talking?
Shinpachi: Even though she verbally abused everyone as usual, she doesn’t tell us the reason…
Umibozu: There’s no need to ask about such a thing, is there?
Page 33:
Umibozu: Then I’ll ask in return. What is the reason for me to come from across the universe and see you?
Kagura: Because you’re balding?
Umibozu: It doesn’t have anything to do with baldness.
Kagura: Or maybe that thing is balding.
Umibozu: I said it doesn’t have anything to do with baldness.
Umibozu: There’s no reason. There’s no reason for a family member to come and see the member of their family. Just as you need no reason to remain here and rebuild the Yorozuya. Same goes for your hell-raising big brother, he might come without no reason at all.
Shinpachi: And just like that… It is said that Umibozu-san’s back as he walked away looked a bit lonely and bald.
Otose: Well, whatever happened, I’m not going to complain as long as you pay the rent. With the world changing, is there no good stories to be heard?
Reporter: Behold, the rebuilding of the terminal has reached this stage.
Soyo: No matter how many disasters come knocking, as long as we have a heart that won’t give in we will be able to stand back up no matter how many times we’re knocked down.
Page 34
Soyo: That’s why, everyone, with me…
Reporter: With all due respect, Soyo-sama, but what we really want to hear is about the assassination of the previous leader Donald Zuramp. There have been some rumors that it was ordered by you to remove Donald Zuramp and gain power
Nobume: If the princess truly is someone who will assassinate people who stood in her way, does that mean you came here ready to die?
Reporter: Then, that rumor truly is real!
Shinpachi: They are the ones who rebuilt Edo that once again was filled with conflicts. Taking over what Zuramp (Katsura) –san  has started, Soyo-hime marvelously rallied the masses and rebuilt Edo. And loyally staying by her side is Nobume-san. No… not just her. Surely by their side, those people are also…
Page 35
Shinpachi: And then one more person that must not be forgotten about.
?: You fools! There is no way the great Donald Zuramp was done in by the likes of those girls! That man is alive! His soul has become a Heroic Spirit that protects this land! Do not forget that Donald Zuramp is always watching you. Must you stray from the righteous path and forgot your heart, he will come and strike you down with heavenly vengeance!
Katsura (?): Yes, this patriotic Heroic Spirit , ObaZ!!
Gintoki: And that’s the end. Katsura-san is dead.
Shinpachi: Don’t kill him off on top of taking over the narration!! And it’s not like he’s definitely Katsura-san even if it’s 100% Katsura-san!
Gintoki: That idiot’s as good as dead anyway. I’ll put an end to him. And what’s with the continuous grumbling, when will you stop?
Shinpachi: Did you hear that!! I’m so embarassed!
Page 36:
Shinpachi: I thought it would be nice to leave a recording for Tama-san.
Gintoki: Just because it’s the final chapter do you think you can wrap it up high-handedly with a narration? It’s long and boring, and there’s no need to give that idiot Katsura any pages. Tama’s and the reader’s eyes will fall off if this goes on. Here, let me take over for a bit.
Gintoki: Tama, there has been so many things that happened since then, I don’t even know where to begin. But there is one thing I want you to know…
Gintoki: that everyone is dead.
Shinpachi: Don’t just wrap it all up like that!!!
Gintoki: Whatever, it’s fine isn’t it. Everyone will someday die anyway.
Shinpachi: That’s too rough a stroke to draw! Surely Tama-san would want to know what happened after that!
Kagura: Gin-chan, it’s just as Shinpachi said. It’s sad if only Tama doesn’t know anything. I will tell everything that happened and everything I feel while she’s gone.
Kagura: The tamagoyaki is delicious.
Shinpachi: What did you decide to tell her? Goddamit! If we also include commentaries about breakfast, our final chapter is going to be even longer all the volumes of KochiKame!!
Kagura: After KochiKome ended, for some reason Jump felt a little lonely.
Shinpachi: We also don’t need to know your feelings after KochiKome ended!!
Kagura: Jump, too, dies.
Shinpachi: Don’t say here that it will die!! That will just create misunderstandings!
Page 37
?: Now have you beheld the truth? Without another peron’s eyes to look at them, human will fall into corruption and decay to the very final chapter.
Shinpachi: Hey, who’s saying that? It’s not me, you know.
?: This world needs an ‘eye’ that will cross through time and watch over the nation for eternity. The only one who can do it is this Supreme Heroic Spirit… no, this Patriotic Heroic Spirit, Obaz--
Gintoki: He’s coming this far just because we didn’t pay attention to him, oi.
Kagura: Even so, with this we wrapped up one person. Who will be next?
Shinpachi: Don’t work your hardest to make this an ‘everybody dies’ ending!!
Gintoki: And those are his final words.
Shinpachi: I am not dead yet!!!
Shinpachi: it’s okay, I’m not going to let them take over the narration. As you have seen above, the torch lit by the Zuramp administration passed down, and with it comes too the revival of the Shinsengumi.
Matsudaira: I want to say welcome home, but the place we returned to is not so soft as to allow those words. This is a battlefield. All your overflowing feelings and nostalgia better be thrown out right here.
Page 38
Matsudaira: And drink until you’re dead!!!
Shinpachi: there’s not even a second to breathe in their job. So that the tax money from the people doesn’t get wasted, they fought without rest day and night. And that is alright because they have their girlfriends by their sides. Beside successfully reviving the dojo and gaining her own shop, my sister who has become the face of Kabuki-cho, the one who used to fight Kondo-san’s advances to the bitter end… they are now…
Shinpachi: They now support each other both publicly and privately. Though I feel quite lonely, for the sake of my sister’s happiness I shall pass through myriads of battles to become a proper adult. I wonder if I can manage to do so someday…
Shinpachi: OO! Eat this adult tsukkomi!!!
Page 39
Shinpachi: So it’s you! The one who’s been stealing my identity and went on and on as you please about things that didn’t happen!! Just what are you lot thinking? Don’t deceive yourself into thinking you can run off to imaginary land just because this is the final chapter, goddamit!!
Shinpachi: Just like that, the moment I set eyes on my brother in law, I just wanted to tease him.
Shinpachi: Oi! Are you a psycho or something, you bastard? That’s not what you normally say to people’s faces!
Shinpachi: Big sis too, why are you supporting this fabricated final chapter??
Tae: Eh? But I’m not doing anything, you know? I’m just…
Tae: Ou, Gorilla. If you ever show your face in this shop ever again, I’ll make it so that you’d have to pay triple.
Shinpachi: Something super scary just came out as the narration!!
Kondo: I understand, Otae-sama. My wallet… no, this government’s treasure vault belongs to you. Oh yeah, and here’s the live ticket to Bz’s as forward payment.
Tae: Ah, Gorilla you are such a bad boy.
Kondo: Ah, no, no, I’m nowhere near Otae-sama’s level.
Shinpachi: It’s just a scene of corruption!!
Tae: I’m sorry… you must have been trying to hide it using narration.
Shinpachi: My tears flows free, unable to stop. As I thought, the only person I can entrust big sister to is—
Shinpachi: Like that’s true at all!!
Gintoki: Oi, you’ve used up three pages on that bullshit. What’re you going to do now, you morons really never changed.
Okita: I’m sorry danna, but isn’t that for the best? I don’t need such a thing as a fabricated ending, as long as I have this peaceful everyday life.
Gintoki: oooh, you said a noble thing, didn’t you. Now wrap it up in the next panel. Wrap it up by committing hara-kiri.
Page 40
Okita: The peaceful everyday life they regained. But for Shinsengumi it is only the beginning of a new battle. From here onward, the Memoirs of Shinsengumi will begin serialization! This is but a small preview.
Gintoki: Rather than ending, a new serial is being greenlit over there!!
Gintoki: Where’s the heck’s the next issue gonna be?! Because of our repeated ending scam offense this manga’s been kicked off Jump!
Okita: With new costume and a new beginning, Shinsengumi’s new fight is freshly beginning. And what is the identity of their mysterious new enemy?
Gintoki: It’s not new at all! I’ve just seen that face just now!! Don’t try to be sneaky and come out here as well!!
Okita: And what exactly is Shinsengumi’s new weapon…?
Okita: Yamazaki-kun, during the process of your rebirth, your personality has been split into 108 individuals…
Gintoki: Oiii!! What happened there Jimmy? He’s still in a situation that looks wholly troublesome!!
Okita: Now, will the Shinsengumi succed in protecting Edo from the disgusting idiot?
Okita: Being a vice-chief is quite troublesome, after all… Now I’m painfully aware of how hard it was for you. But… I will support Shinsengumi for your sake as well, Hijikata-san.
Page 41
Hijikata: In the end you’re fabricating stuff as well!!
Hijkata: What are you people doing, slacking off on your jobs?! Pay for your shame by committing hara-kiri simultaneously!!
Okita: Hijikata-san, this is the final chapter, y’know? We’re not going to get paid even if we work anyway. Look at Yamazaki over there. He’s doing mecha poses with the mecha Yamazakis.
Hijikata: But why??
Gintoki: Vice-chief, vice-chief. I get it, I get it. None of you have the talent to wrap things up, I understand that now. For now, here, just put this on. Alright, now strike a pose. Good. Now stay just like that.
Hijikata: Please wrap this up, will you?! Just why did you tell me to strike a pose? What were those eyes??
Gintoki: Shinsengumi is that.
Hijikata: Is what?? What kind of wrapping up is that?!
Page 42
Tae: Hijikata-san, don’t be so tense. Since it’s a rare thing for everyone to gather under one roof, why don’t you relax as well? Considering this is the final chapter…
Hijikata: There’s no such thing as a final chapter on a policeman’s job!! During the time we’re being stupid like this—
Kyuubei: I see… so throwing up a huge fuss and going berserk inside a shop is a policeman’s job, is it? Then, I, too, shall do my job.
Hijikata: Oh yeah, I remember this kind of thing happening back then, Kyuubei. Fine, bring it on. I held back because you’re a woman but now I know you’re much more than that. Now show me the dedication to your job!!
Kyuubei: A serving of fruits coming up, now open wide~
Hijikata: You’re a cabaret girl?????????
Tae: When I invited her to just come and play, she said she feel bad about it and decided to help out as well.
Kyuubei: I thought up of a way to serve the costumers without coming into contact with men. Like this, being the number one cabaret girl is not a mere dream for me.
Hijikata: Don’t put someone who appreciates their personal space far too much on customer service!
Tae: This, right here, is a fight as well. There’s a lot of cabaret clubs where people try to please the costumers by eliminating distances, but I hear in Yoshiwara it’s customary to first reject the costumer with a swipe of your graceful, flowing sleeves and make them more interested that way!
Page 43
Tsukuyo: Otae, the mission is complete.
Hijikata: Forget graceful flowing sleeves, this girl has no sleeve!!
Sacchan: Mugu—Ginsyaan staaaph
Hijikata: With her being here as well, I don’t know what you’re trying to pull anymore!!
Tsukuyo: Kagura, how have you been?
Kagura: Everyone came here after all.
Tsukuyo: Yes, everyone does
Page 44
Zenzo: Shoo, shoo! Hey, I came here because I was invited to visit but there’s no fuglies around! What’s the meaning of this?!
Gintoki: Here’s your order, please enjoy your stay.
Gintoki: Dang it, what a troublesome bunch. Coming around and gathering just because it’s the final chapter.
Tae: But with this we can wrap the whole thing up with everyone’s narration, right?
Shinpachi: uh, why are you trying to wrap things up. Everyone getting drunk and having fun together, that fits us just well doesn’t it.
Page 45
Shinpachi: Yes. Truly, nothing has changed. That might be the best words we can offer you.
Shinpachi: Come on, please hold it together.
Gintoki: Which part of me is not holding it together? If you want proof I can list al Dragon Ball’s villains for you right now.
Shinpachi: Uh, that offer is already proof you’re no longer holding it together. Doctor—gororororororo
?: Hei, lady. I want ten more portions of this meal.
Abuto: Oi oi, just take it slow and stop right there, will ya? We’re a poor-as-dirt organization with no money and no financial backing, you know? Be a bit mindful about your spending habits.
Kamui: I can’t help it, this place just have the best food. Plus, it’s better to fill up your belly before a war.
Abuto: A war? Like we have the money to do that.

Kamui: Then delay the excitement for a bit, lady. Next time, we will come to consume this planet.
Abuto: my, my. We spent so much again.
Kamui: Even if we are broke when it comes to money, we have to be rich in dreams.
Abuto: What about your little sister?
Kamui: Is that even a question? Of course, I will defeat her.
Abuto: Ah you’re saying such a thing again. Even though when your little sister went out to look for knowledge during the last two years, you followed her around for quite a while.
Kamui: Another old man also did the same as me, didn’t he? Don’t play dumb, you idiot.
Katsura: Y-you have very good eyes to notice me, ahahaha! That’s right, the Heroic Spirit ObaZ will always be watching y--
Page 47
Sakamoto: It has been some times since I contacted you, how are you faring? Chintoki-kun, as always I’m still running around in space. As I thought, space is just the best. When I look out to the infinity stretched before me, petty stuff like all my bad feelings just packed their bags and left. Mantoki-kun should come and look around space with me next time.
Sakamoto: Now, the reason why I took up the brush this time is that there is something I must tell you. I promised that come hell or high water I will come and save you, but when I saw the broken terminal I had honestly thought “Oh, well, they’re dead lol”.
Sakamoto: I don’t mean to say this as mere consolation, but I believe the one who saved you was, without question, that man. After sacrificing his all to the Altana and was erased, he became a part of it and protected his students.
Page 48
Sakamoto: That’s why I don’t think there’s any reason for you to feel lonely. Without doubt your teacher is there, inside that planet, and always watching over you.
Sakamoto: To my dearest friend, Chinmanbuku-kun.
Sakamoto: P.S. I met Zura recently and heard that the remnant of Kiheitai is showing strange movements.
Katsura: Dragon’s veins?
Henpeita: Yes. I heard she continued her journey to visit every Dragon’s Veins opening in the land.
Katsura: Just who is she imitating by doing that….
Henpeita: I believe she must have been unable to forgive her own self who allowed Sakata Gintoki to bear the burden of Takasugi’s... of everything.
Page 49
Henpeita: Of course we are grateful, to be able to see his smile once more—the man who was trapped by death. And this time, this is her turn.
Katsura: ….
Katsura: Takasugi’s body was certainly swallowed by altana, but the possibility of him being reborn is not even one in a million. That miracle only happened because Utsuro was born from the Altana.
Henpeita: And that does not matter. Because this is Kiheitai’s atonement. Our cross to bear.
Katsura: Takechi, could it be you too….
Katsura: won’t give me any attention?
Sakamoto: I believe that something like a miracle doesn’t exist in this world.
Page 50
Sakamoto: the things that happen in this world have a reason to be, and only happen because they must. That’s why I don’t think you being saved was a miracle, no.
Villager1: Why is in this kind of place…
Villager2: Did someone abandon it?
Villager3: It’s the work of the Dragon Vein God, the divine punishment of the Dragon Vein God!
Sakamoto: A teacher protecting his students can’t be called a miracle. It’s just how things are.
Page 51
Tae: Oh, so you came after all.
Tae: It’s been some time since we meet our father together. We should report something to him.
Shinpachi: No…
Shinpachi: Back then, father looked up to the skies of Edo and lamented. And yet… even though this is that very same sky, it seems so different now.
Page 52
Shinpachi: That’s because I know now that everyone is also under this very sky.
Page 53
Shinpachi: It doesn’t matter if a cloud comes rolling in. I know that, inside our hearts, everyone is still here underneath my sky.
Page 54
Shinpachi: That’s why, Tama-san… Even if now you’re standing underneath an unknown sky, even if now you’re standing underneath a sky under which we no longer exist. Please don’t cry. Beneath your sky, by your side, we are always there.
Page 55
Shinpachi: That’s right. If you would kindly believe us, then it doesn’t matter what comes. Without fail we will break through the world, the era, and the panels to come and wipe your tears.
Page 56
Tama: Let’s go.
?: After that, those girls continue to live in this era. A world of technology where robots are at its peak prosperity. Humanity had their homes and jobs robbed from them by the robots, and in this new world a new main character appear.
?: Those girls lived happily, and humans became jobless. Everyone. Every last one.
Page 57
Madao: If everyone is jobless then joblessness is no longer joblessness. Joblessness will become colorlessness. And then colorlessness will become happiness…
Tama: Hasegawa-san…?
Yorozuya: You’re trying to fabricate an ending too aren’t you??!!
Gintoki: You bastard! What kind of final chapter you’re trying to make Tamako believe?!
Kagura: Don’t just make up a story about the future as you please!!
Madao: No, you’re wrong! You’re wrong! It’s just I stopped being a hero and tried looking for jobs but no one would hire me!! That’s why I was just telling Matako-chan that it’s good thing the world has become one where everyone is jobless!!
Tamako: I’m sorry. It seems like there is an error in my data.
Page 58
Gintoki: Yoo, what’s with that half-asleep face you’re making there, Tama? Well whatever, we’re going out on an emergency job so you keep your eyes open until we’re back, got it? There’s no need for us to wipe those tears, eh?
Kagura: Gin-chan! What’s the emergency job again?
Gintoki: Eh…? What is it…
Shinpachi: Why are you forgetting it even if the work is an emergency??
Kagura: What was it…
Gintoki: What was it…
Gintoki: Ah, well, it doesn’t matter. Because we are--

A Gintama episode a day keeps the ending away…Episode 150
Episode Title:  All's Well That Ends Well,  All's Well That Ends Well: The Alternate Version,  All's Well That Ends Well: The Alternate Version 2,  All's Well That Ends Well: The REAL Alternate Version 2,  IF YOU CAN’T BEAT THEM, JOIN THEM
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MY 26 FAVORITE MOMENTS IN EPISODE 150 (no manga equivalent...therefore, can’t blame me for going overboard with the faves):
A season finale that felt more like a time-killer but I have absolutely no complaints whatsoever since it was hilarious and adorable.
Tumblr media
1) First time I watched this episode, I think I actually panicked a little when the three of them came out in their funeral suits since I didn’t know we would be getting more episodes. We find out soon enough before the end of this ep, but until then, the whole setup with the sad music still gave me a minor anxiety attack. The anime team were just as sadistic as Sougo.
Tumblr media
2) I love that this early on, the anime team still guessed that the “end” of Gintama would involve the terminal being blown up in some way. Actually this whole scenario is pretty prescient, considering what happened during the war.
Tumblr media
3) It’s so interesting seeing where the anime team thought the story would go and how we actually ended up right now. At the point, it was a reasonable assumption that the final Big Boss battle would be against Takasugi since he was set up as the main villain. Who knows if Sorachi-sama even thought of Utsuro yet. Glad things didn’t quite turn out that way.
Tumblr media
4) Considering how things turned out in the last chapter, watching this moment last night actually brought tears to my eyes.
Tumblr media
5) Someone on the anime team must have known Sorachi-sama personally cuz isn’t this kinda how he ended the war? Lmao.
Tumblr media
6) This was sooo melodramatic I hope this is not how our beloved Gintama ends.
Tumblr media
7) Yeah, thumbs down for me. I want to feel good by the end but not diabetic.
Tumblr media
8) Kagura’s side-eye.
Tumblr media
8a) Just cuz I couldn’t stop laughing at it.
Tumblr media
9) I just loved Kagura’s face!
Tumblr media
10) This literally would be THE WORST ending. Definitely not a favorite moment, but rather the most traumatizing...well, except for Hasegawa.
Tumblr media
11) Seriously, I couldn’t stop laughing. Only Shinpachi could dream up such a super melodramatic ending. Barf.
Tumblr media
12) I remember thinking...wait a second...this looks familiar...and then of course they confirmed what this is ripping off paying homage to.
Tumblr media
13) Ok, I just have to point out that Sougo’s attitude about giving Pachi-kun advice is just as dismissive as...
Tumblr media
14)...Kagura-chan’s. Coincidence? I think not.
Tumblr media
15) Evangelion should’ve sued.
Tumblr media
16) Not only does Kagura’s ending considerate to Madao since he’s gainfully employed, but she also gives us Cyborg!Elizabeth. Kagura’s ending WINS hands down.
Tumblr media
17) Especially since we got Gintoki in a baseball uniform...
Tumblr media
18)...and herself in the cutest fan get-up.
Tumblr media
19) Pachi-kun didn’t fare that well in her ending but oh well.
Tumblr media
20) It’s odd how Shinpachi’s endings all involve ripping off some other series’ endings.
Tumblr media
21) Omggggg.
Tumblr media
22) I don’t care what this actually was, I took it as an homage to Gravitation.
Tumblr media
23) Omfg.
Tumblr media
24) Just...everything about this...the mosaic, the snot, the hamster covered in his snot...lmfao. Shinpachi’s so freaking weird sometimes.
Tumblr media
25) I’ve said many times: Yorozuya on Yorozuya violence is always LOVE.
Tumblr media
26) That’s all I’ve been asking for, honestly.
SHIPS TALLY:
Gintoki x Hijikata: look at that smile. IT COUNTS.
Tumblr media
Okita x Kagura: please refer to moments 13 and 14.
Kondou x Otae: the fact that he was allowed to stand there during such an intimate family moment meant a lot to me.
Tumblr media
Gintoki x Takasugi: I’m really so so glad this is not how things turned out.
Tumblr media
Gintoki x Shinpachi: that was a bit on the cringe side but the loving sentiments are there.
Tumblr media
Shinpachi x Otsuu: not ONLY in his dreams but in his dreams within his imagination so ultimately means the same thing as it always does: Pachi-kun being delusional, but out of respect for him, I’ll count it.
Tumblr media
Zura x Elizabeth: look at how loving his expression is!
Tumblr media
Hasegawa x Hatsu: honestly she gives me the creeps but I’m glad in this ending scenario they’re still together.
Tumblr media
Gintoki x Okita: cuz in Kagura’s scenario, Sougo was thinking of Gin-chan very fondly based on that soft expression.
Tumblr media
Gintoki x Elizabeth (or Supervisor): Gintoki seemed seriously distressed about the state of Eli.
Tumblr media
Shinpachi x Kagura: has Kagura ever smiled at Pachi-kun like that in real life? Or shared her precious sukonbou with him? Shinpachi is an extreme wishful thinker.

The Day Our Bench Was Lonely - 02
Summary:  As one would have expected, coming of age isn’t quite easy when you’re a Yato. Kagura goes to an Alien Hunter school and Okita longs at the sky.
Chapters: 2/?
previous
next
chapter ii - penpals in space
There aren't many things Sougo find unsettling. After all, his boss and foster father are known as both a gorilla and an insufferable stalker while also leading the police force. That being said, Hijikata is more of a leader than Kondo—at least when it comes to the technical aspect of leading and being the pain-in-the-ass man of Gintama he excels at his job. For now. There's no telling when one of his assassination attempts will succeed and when the rise of Kaiser Okita Sougo de Sade II will finally happen.
Okita Sougo is a disturbed individual who is rarely surprised or startled, even when his boss comes in naked and marries a gorilla princess from outer-space, or when Hijikata-san slides away to a dark corridor sniffing mayonnaise like a cat on drugs. As a matter of fact, he's barely moved when he finds after a rather rowdy and drunken night, Kondo, the boss and a cardboard hobo together in a bed that's probably stained with suspicious night activity.
Yet it seems like his mind cannot help but notice how a certain red-haired brat hasn't shown up at their little destructive rendezvous. He doesn't really care at first. There are times where the Yorozuya somehow find a job and she's gone for a couple of days—often less since the Shinsengumi and the Yorozuya tend to meet in a twist of fate, making the trio as much as allies as they are foes to them. For the same reason, he and China forged a bond that is neither friendship nor hateful but something in-between. They hold a healthy rivalry wherein both can unleash their potential, get loose without consequences—besides the traumatised civilians and destroyed buildings—and waking up all the muscles and nerves of the body. Consequently, his body's been more than dull these weeks because she doesn't show up anywhere.
Whether it’s the park, Gran's candy shop or Kabuki-Cho that girl is nowhere to be found, even though he catches sight of the boss and Shinpachi-kun wandering around. He wonders if she's avoiding him, despite finding the idea absolutely aberrant since that person wouldn't ever run away from him: if he ever goes in the wrong path she'd dash at him in a furious battle cry.
He waits patiently for the whole week. That girl does have a complex family so perhaps a redeemed-terrorist brother or an overprotective father swooped in.
They share a pact of privacy, not that they talked or decided it. It happens that she doesn't ask him anything and he doesn't, either. Okita does not understand what she thinks about it but he's bad at chatting, much less with a female for he comes from a poor, rural region like Bushu. But he's a great swordsman, and much more agile with his sword than his words. It's not that they hate each other but there's simply no need for useless blabbering.
Or so he thinks. Until now. He’s truly puzzled by how far a brat like her could go to. In the middle of his though Okita is brought back by the familiar, deadpan-toned ringing of the phone nested in his pocket.
I have a Hijikata~ I have a tabasco~ Die Hijikata, Hijikata die~
With a sudden slowness, Okita catches the call and lie through his teeth, "Hijikata-san you shouldn't bother an upright policeman like me, I'm patrolling and this is an important duty for the citizens. But the trash's duty is to die, so die Hijikata-san."
Hijikata's voice comes through tired by his antics. "What upright policeman?! I'm sure you're somewhere skipping patrols again."
Children's laugh in the background and sat on his favourite bench under the comfortable shade of a tree, Sougo deadpans yet again. "I don't know what you mean."
Hijikata coughs, "anyway the princess and the Yorozuya are at the terminal. They want to go to the emergency transmission room and you have the keys, right? I don't care about the perm idiot but don't make the princess wait too much."
"Alright." He cuts the call and yawns. So much for slinking away of the patrols and going through suspect alleyways, nobody knows better than him. At the very least the Terminal isn't too far, Okita comforts himself with the idea that he'll reach the massive, monolith building in less than fifteen minutes if he doesn't get accidentally murdered like that one time.
And as planned, Okita arrives in less than fifteen minutes at the Terminal where he's welcomed by the princess and the boss though the latter looked like he just survived a near-death experiment.
"Thank you for being so fast Okita-san," the princess nods at him and smile. "I want to communicate with a ship in space so I need our best antenna, it's important to me."
Wordlessly, Okita guides them through the intricate hallways of the Terminal until they reach the inner core where the Altana flow the strongest. As they reach further in the giant building the doors become more and more secure and ending with shuttle doors that lock soundly behind them, though they're usually found on space ships to airlock.
"This is the emergency transmission room," Okita says as he passes the key—a card and enters the clean and neat room. As the name suggests, the transmission room is small and have one computer as well as some chairs laying around in a nearly all-white room that reminds him too much of a hospital. He switches on the computer in a flick of the finger and the panel brightens up. "Do you have the ID of the ship, princess?"
"Use this Sofa-kun," Gintoki scurries through her kimono and proffers him with a messy piece of paper that Okita can barely read, as the notes are obviously scrambled hurriedly.
Taking a minute or two deciphering Okita finally starts typing on the computer.

"What are you doing here, boss?" Okita slouches down onto the chair and yawns yet again, though the perm should probably be doing the yawning instead of him. His eyes are almost red from lack of sleep, not to talk about the big dark circles beneath them and the yellow, sickly tone of his skin. Okita has never seen Gintoki in this state.
"Using this too," Gintoki points the machine, "I asked Tama but apparently Gengai didn't put any antennas that connect to outer-space. That old man had one job."
"Why need that though?" He looks up the computer, the request is confirmed, "if you're smuggling some illegal SpaceBay goods I'll need to arrest you, boss."
"Doesn't Okita-san know?" Soyo interrupts with a surprised face, hand over the mouth and all. "Kagura-chan, she has gone to space."
Gintoki cocks an eyebrow as well, "that brat went off quickly and didn't really prepare anyone for this, not even her dear Gin-san so I guess Souichiro-kun you weren't spared either."
"...Space?"
"Yeah. Space." Gintoki rolls his eye, "she said she wanted to go to a school and become an alien hunter like the baldy. It was his idea, anyway."
"But fortunately Kagura-chan gave us her ship's ID and maybe her school's station too. She said it'd be like sending letters. Maybe you should give it a try as well Okita-san, I'm sure Kagura-chan wants to hear from you too!"
Sougo is tempted at first but his throat dries up, his stomach knots and he refuses. "I don't really care if that brat is in space," he lies through his teeth but it soothes his pride. It's amazing how he even bothered to tell her his farewell and she decides to skip right through it in return, not even bothering to get someone to warn him while he's scurrying the town like an idiot. Intense need for killing Hijikata suddenly surges through his mind, wanting desperately to release his anger. The irritation almost makes it to his face and he barely manages to hide his feelings before Gintoki starts grinning at him.
"Soda-kun—"
"It's Sougo."
Gintoki brushes it off in a dismissal wave, "all the same, all the same. Kagura's next break is going to be in two months, you know? It's fine if you want to chat with her."
Two months.
"I'm fine boss, she and I can always have a match after that. I can't say it's that easy for you though, you look like you haven't slept since she left."
And it's probably what happened.
Before Gintoki can retort the computer beeps in loudly, followed by white lines of codes scrolling through.

Two messages pops up on the panel: one for the princess and the other for the boss, they seem to be long and including few other friends or family—saving up on the number of messages she sent. That's almost too smart from her, considering her usually brash and reckless behaviour. And then, a third message pops up.
From: Kagura
To: Idiot
Subject: I'm in space, loser
[Message Encrypted]
It's for him. He's almost sure of it and it should make him angry that he identifies himself to an idiot but then again that's exactly the kind of things she'd pull off. Of course, she would, that's just how she is and it's infuriating that even for a fraction of seconds he felt hurt. Indeed, he has been fooled, because there's no way he's ever gonna be so mushy mushy with her, they simply aren't like that.
Okita let a grin distorts his face, he wants to reply and curse her right now and then.
"I thought you weren't interested, Solar-kun." Gintoki sounds too victorious for his taste.
"I'm not going to answer," his grin fades back to his usual poker face. "I have too much duties to play the pen pal of a brat."
"Hah," Gintoki scoffs and raise his arms for more dramatic effect. "That's new from you Soda-kun, if Shinpachi's a virgin you are virgin from any work."
"Right back at you, boss." Okita rolls his chair away from the screen and stretches, "anyway princess you can use the computer, you should be able to read and answer her now."
While Soyo excitedly takes a seat in front of the computer and starts to furiously type on the keyboard Okita rummaged his pocket again for his phone. The model is black and printed with the golden pattern of their uniform and looks below-average, whereas the average citizen possesses a slim smartphone the Shinsengumi's is rather bulky. It has to survive their activity, to the weather and should they throw it their phone have probably more chance knocking someone cold and very much dead but that's not all. With the human's genius and Amanto technology they could create a slim and solid phone but what they have is much more.
Wifi
Network
Okita selects the latter and the name of the antenna— a series of number— shows up.
Unlike any ordinary citizen, the captains of the Shinsengumi have access to all the antennas of the Terminal, the antennas were of course powerful enough to be reachable anywhere from Japan as long as they have a computer to connect with.
Simply put, that computer was built small enough to fit in their pocket— in the form of a phone.
He opens the message, decrypting in the background and waiting patiently for each letter to start forming on his screen. On the other hand, the princess is giggling and without a doubt pleased by the surprisingly detailed message she received and after a series of furious assault on the keyboard, she leaves her seat for Gintoki.
Silence washes over the room.
Ten miserable lines that is barely sufficient for the silver perm.
"Is that really all she has to say?" Gintoki's voice drop down at near the subzero temperature and messes his hair in sheer frustration. "'Gin-chan I have a real room now'? I scrambled off all my pachinko money to pay for her food!"
"But I think Kagura-chan is doing her best." Soyo pipped in, her finger gently traced the screens, kanji by kanji, "your message doesn't have a lot of errors. The one she sent me is full of them, but I'm her best friend so it's ok. She probably wants you to be proud of her, Sakata-san."
Gintoki suddenly falls in a silence that Okita interpret as one desperate attempt at not tearing up in front of a princess and a rather sadistic policeman. All is well for the two of them, and they seem to be satisfied of the messages China sent but he, unfortunately, cannot say the same.
Okita stares blankly at the meagre,  a mere three characters worth one-liner that is plenty enough to fill his body with confusion and anger, his irritation howling the deep of his heart in the form of soon-to-explode veins.
LOL
That brat.
He nearly crushes his precious, millions-of-yens-worth phone into thousand pieces as a wave of disappointment settles in his stomach. He doesn't know what he expected yet he's still angered by all the carelessness transpiring from the message yet a part of him knows it's just the way she is.

A reckless idiot
Summary: Takes place after the final battle (hopefully the real final battle). Kagura has something to say to Sougo, and that is to tell him how stupid he truly is. Take in consideration that I haven't read the latest manga chapters, I prefer anime. So if something written here has already happened (I don't think so) or etc. My apologies. This is my take on the canon(ishishish) road (obviously smushy as fuck, I can't help it and I tend to amp up the drama) before Sorachi himself shows us the real deal. So, mild spoilers for the anime watchers as I've seen couple pictures from the un-animated content.
Pairings: Okikagu
Rating: T for violence, angst(ish), fluff, bad language
Disclaimer: I don't own Gintama or its characters. Sorachi Hideaki does. I only own this story.
Author’s notes: I have a link to my fanfiction masterlist on my profile. Please check it out for more chapters and fics!
A reckless idiot
Gintoki, Shinpachi and Kagura were standing at the all too familiar gates. Once those wooden doors protected the great police force of Edo, the Shinsengumi. After Shinsengumi's departure, the abandoned building was left untouched. Heavy wooden bars held the gate tightly shut and none dared to trespass.
Kagura remembered the seal on the door. She hadn't told a soul, but there were times she visited those gates. She wasn't sure why. Maybe she was looking for something. Someone. Maybe Kagura just accidentally walked past it during her walks. Who the hell knew.
After the first big battle, many of Edo's buildings took a lot of damage and the old Shinsengumi compound was one of them. Shinpachi promised to Kondo that the he would do everything he possibly could to fix the building as fast as possible. The earth's great police-force had made their glorious return after all.
To Shinapchi's and many others surprise, the Shinsengumi disbanded and vanished right after the war. Sure Shinpachi didn't know the true nature of their actions, but it seemed like a strange decision at the time. Kondo was the only one staying behind, managing his own new course of life.
Despite everything the Shinsengumi compound was restored and left untouched, ready for the brave samurais if they would return home. Two years after the war...well, let's just say a shit ton of things happened at the same time. Familiar faces came back, old friends and foes alike.
*insert Sorachi's vision of the final fight (I can't even imagine it, so I'm going to leave it like this)
The fight took a toll on people involving it, but luckily most of our beloved friends made it through. And now, back to the Yorozuya trio standing on the gates of the Shinsengumi compound. Gintoki hissed suddenly, breaking the momentary silence between them. He was bandaged pretty much from head to toe, walking with crutches, limping his right foot and sporting pair fo dead-fish eyes.
”Be careful with your foot Gin-san,” Shinpachi said.
”Yare, yare Shinpachi-kun, it's not that bad. I barely even feel any painnNGAAAH!” Gintoki grunted after Kagura stopped his nonsense with softly kicking his injured leg.
”Kagura-chan! What are you doing?” Shinpachi cried in his straight man habit.
”Oi brat! What was that for? Do you want Gin-chan to drop dead?”
Kagura glanced at the two men glaring at her and sighed a little. ”I just wanted to remind you to be more careful Gin-chan,” she said, surprisingly seriously.
”And how is kicking my leg proving your point?” Gintoki asked and Shinpachi was nodding strongly next to him.
”He's right Kagura-chan, you don't-”
Kagura turned on her feet to face the two samurais fully and her expression was enough to make Shinpachi choke on his words. ”I just HATE when people do something stupid and reckless, yes...just like that stupid...” Kagura paused as her voice lowered into a whisper and she looked down to her feet.
Shinpachi wasn't quite sure what to say to Kagura, but luckily Gintoki seemed to read her like a book. ”Just like that stupid...who?” Gintoki asked with a softer voice.
Kagura looked at her foster-father straight into his maroon orbs. His eyes seemed to ask a different question and she felt her cheeks getting a little warmer. ”W-what do you mean by who? I meant you, yes,” she said and frowned.
”Ah, of course you did,” Gintoki said and blinked his eyes slowly to Kagura as he was trying to communicate by morse-code.
Kagura huffed and tightened her grip on her umbrella.
”Alright then you two, are we ready to pay them a visit?” Gintoki asked and glanced at both of his 'underlings'.
”Let's do it,” Shinpachi cheered.
A smiled sneaked up on Kagura's lips. ”Yeah,” she said equally exited as Shinpachi. Then the three members of Yorozuya stepped closer to the gates. Kagura and Shinpachi each placed a hand against the no-longer bared gate and gave it a firm push.
As the gates opened up a view of men in dark blue uniforms filled the front yard. There was so much happening in the compound as the Edo's police force had settled back home. Among them was none-other than the commander Gorilla. ”This feels a little nostalgic,” Shinpachi said with a smile.
”Yeah, in all honesty it's good to have them back,” Gintoki said quietly and took a step in.
”How about you Kagura-chan? Do you feel nostalgic?” Shinpachi asked.
”I don't know,” she answered. ”Maybe a little-aru.”
”OI! IT'S THE YOROZUYA!” Kondo shouted from a short distance. Every officer on the yard turned to look at the gates. To the yorozuya's slight embarrassment they were welcomed in with loud cheers and applauses. They were considered as great heroes of the final battle after all, loved and admired by everyone.
Kondo strode towards the trio with open arms and without a warning the jolly gorilla hugged the bandaged trio. ”Kondo-san!” Hijikata called from somewhere. A moment later the vice-commander yanked the emotional commander away from the hug. ”Let them breath would you.”
”Get back to work guys!” Hijikata ordered. He didn't want any unnecessary slacking off as there was a lot things to be taken care of. One of them being settling back to the compound and the other being taking care of the injured officers.
”It's okay Hijikata-san,” Shinpachi said to cool of the vice-commander.
”I'm just so happy to see you all and I'm glad that you're back on your feet,” Kondo said, the latter directed at Gintoki.
”I could say the same thing, you weren't exactly in best shape a couple of days ago,” Gintoki said. ”So, what's your next move tax-robbers?”
”Gin-san!” Shinpachi hissed.
”Oh come, I'm just joking.”
In the middle of all the chit-chat, Kagura remained awfully quiet. Usually she was right after Gintoki throwing some sort of insults on someone's way. But not today, she wasn't feeling like her bubbly self.
Hijikata noticed Kagura's strange behaviour. She had her umbrella dipped back, face slowly turning from side to side. Eyes wandering among the Shinsengumi officers. Was she looking for something? That was certainly the case in Hijikata's eyes.
Kagura didn't first notice the vice-commander stepping next to her. She snapped out of her thoughts with a flick of a lighter. Hijikata lighted up a cigarette and waited for Kagura to react. She said nothing, it felt like she was afraid to ask what was on her mind.
Hijikata blew out the fumes of his cigarette and cleared out his throat. ”Oi, follow me.”
”Why would I do that-aru?” she asked.
”Oh please, I can see what you're doing.”
Kagura stared at him with lips pressed tightly together, eyes telling of her suspicion. ”What are you saying?” she asked.
”Just follow me,” Hijikata said and turned his back on her. He made his way towards the main building and checked if Kagura was following. Just like he had expected she was right behind him. They entered the building as discreetly as possible.
Kagura closed her umbrella, but her grip on it was still tight, palms feeling strangely sweaty. She hadn't even done anything that difficult earlier, so why was she feeling like this, so anxious. Then again, of course she knew exactly why she felt like that. Hijikata stopped by the end of a hallway and turned to Kagura.
”He's there.”
”Who?”
”Stop it.”
”Fine...” Kagura agreed. She swallowed and looked down. ”How is he?”
”He's recovering. He might be resting right now, but you can go and see for yourself.”
”O-okay,” Kagura mumbled.
”I'll give you some privacy,” Hijikata said and passed by Kagura, with the intention of returning outside.
”Oi! I don't need any privacy with him!” Kagura shouted after Hijikata who ignored her completely.
With Hijikata out of sight, Kagura turned to the door. She touched it hesitantly, considering on should she enter or not. Then she relaxed her shoulders and slid the door open a bit. She had to see him, she wanted to see his chest rising peacefully, that was all she needed.
Inside the room she saw him, her rival, laying on his bed. Kagura opened the door a little more to see him better. He had his eyes closed, apparently Hijikata had guessed it right, he was sleeping.
Kagura entered the room, closing the door right after her. Softly and quietly, she kneeled down next to his futon. It felt strange to see him like this, peaceful and silent. Last time Kagura saw him laying like this was on the battlefield, but he wasn't exactly peaceful.
The memory of that day made her eyes feel watery. She remembered him couching blood, talking nonsense, breathing roughly, seemingly in pain. Kagura frowned her brows and felt a tear trailing down her cheek. ”Idiot,” she muttered, still conflicted on should she be more angry at him or more worried about him.
Then again, above all else, she felt great relief. He was alive, breathing.
”China...is it you?” Sougo asked quietly eyes narrowly open.

Kagura landed softly on her feet as another enemy went down in front of her. She heard that ominous chinkling sound coming from both of her sides. Two spears were coming on her way, but as expected from Kagura, she effortlessly dodged both. With one high jump she kicked both of her enemies simultaneously.
Her blood was rushing, adrenaline was pumping through her veins, she felt the heat of the battle in her soul. Kagura wasn't a yato who took pleasure in killing, but she loved the feeling of intense fighting.
After shooting a round of bullets on the incoming enemies, she saw Gintoki, Takasugi and Katsura advancing further. Kagura ran towards them through the rubble and fallen enemies. As agile as she was, there was a crack in the ground right on her way. Her eyes were so focused on Gintoki's back that one of her legs slid into the crack.
”Shit,” she muttered and tried to yank her leg free. But it didn't budge and the rough edges injured her ankle. The more she wiggled, the more it hurt. ”Dammit.”
For Kagura's dismay she heard a pack of enemies closing in. She popped her head up and saw at least ten of those bastards coming her way. Before Kagura could react she saw two men cut down each and every one of those who threatened her.
”Huh?” She recognized them both. ”Kamui! Sadist!”
Kamui turned to look at his little sister with a wide smile. ”Why are you sitting there? This isn't a playground.”
”I'm not sitting idiot! My leg got stuck.”
”Who gets their leg stuck in middle of the battlefield?” Kamui snorted.
”Give her a rest,” Sougo said calmly.
Kagura felt a little warmness on her cheeks. Was the sadistic prince defending her, she though.
”Maybe she just got tired and shoved her leg there on purpose,” Sougo added with an even calmer voice.
Kagura's nostrils were fuming. She gritted her teeth and was about to give Sougo a piece of her mind. Then another wave of enemies snapped her out her anger. ”Oi you two bastards! Eyes on the battlefield, yes.”
Both Sougo and Kamui smirked a little and with weapons ready they charged at the incoming enemies. Kagura huffed to herself and turned her attention on her foot. After a while of suffering, she was still stuck. She wasn't afraid of the pain, but she knew too much strain on her ankle could put her to the sidelines of the very important battle they were having.
Kagura glanced at the pair of sadists cutting down enemies and she could swear that they were fighting each other from time to time. After her sight was clear from enemies, she saw Sougo approaching her. He kneeled down to her level and looked at her leg.
”Let me help you there China,” he said and was about to touch her ankle.
”Hell no! You'll just break it again-aru.”
Sougo chuckled and shook his head. He lifted his eyes to look straight in to hers. Kagura felt something strange inside her as he looked at her. He wasn't as deadpan as he usually was, he was almost concerned or at least she thought he was.
”I won't, I promise,” he said. ”We need you out there China.”
”Hell yes you need me out there,” she huffed at Sougo. He didn't say a word to her and flashed a small smile. Kagura looked away from him and puffed her cheeks. Why was the sadist being so nice all of a sudden, she thought to herself.
Sougo shifted his attention to her stuck ankle. He moved her leg carefully to see better and then he saw her injury. ”You're bleeding China.”
Kagura turned to look at him. ”It's nothing, just a little scratch, yes.”
”Right,” he said like he knew what she was going to say.
”What?” Kagura huffed.
Sougo looked up and their eyes locked. For a short moment Kagura thought that sadistic bastard that always annoyed her to the max, made something flutter inside her. His crimson eyes were so focused on her and he almost looked a little...handsome?
Kagura tried to shake off the weird feeling and she looked away again. ”Stop staring at me weirdo and help me out here, yes,” she mumbled.
Sougo remained wordless and smiled a little. He took off his white cravat and gave it to Kagura. She snatched the piece of clothing from his hands and stared at it. ”Is this for sneezing?”
He sighed like he was amused by her. ”No idiot.”
”Who are you calling an idiot?”
”You, idiot.”
”Want me to kick your ass, yes.”
Then he sighed out of frustration. ”No!” Sougo said firmly, his voice even stun Kagura. She could tell from his voice if he was just engaging with their casual banter or was he serious. This time, he was dead serious. They shared a look again. ”It's for your ankle genius.”
Kagura blinked her eyes a couple of times. ”Oh...” she said quietly. ”Thanks.”
”Still so stubborn...” he said and focused back at her leg.
Kagura didn't really have a counter for his words. She had always been stubborn and even after two years she was on the quest to awaken Sadaharu, she remained stubborn.
”Don't move,” Sougo said and positioned both of his hands on her leg. Kagura gasped a little at the contact. Sougo's eyes darted at her and he lifted his fingers off her. ”Did I hurt you?”
”No, no you didn't,” Kagura said and dodged his gaze. She was so confused of her own behaviour. Why is my heart beating faster, Kagura thought and took in a deep calming breath. Sougo continued to free her from the damned crack. Kagura couldn't help herself, she wanted to look at him. She observed him from the corner of her eye. He was so focused and definitely looked like he was concerned.
”Okay China, I think I can get your leg free,” Sougo said without looking at her. ”It's gonna hurt a little so bear with it.”
”Okay.”
Sougo had both of his hand on her leg again, focus completely on her. Usually Sougo and Kagura were both famous for having their senses on high alert at a battlefield. This time unfortunately, they only focused on each other. Apparently one of the ”fallen” enemies nearby wasn't exactly dead.
Without neither Sougo or Kagura noticing, a man had picked themselves up from the ground and slowly started to approach the duo. Kagura's trail of thought was cut off by that blood-thirsty chinkling of a javelin. She shifted her sight from Sougo towards the infamous sound.
Kagura inhaled loudly as she saw a blood covered man closing in on them, javelin aimed at Sougo. The young captain noticed Kagura's strong reaction and looked at her face. Before he could ask her anything, his ears registered the chinkling.
”Sadist! Behind you!” Kagura shouted.
Sougo's fingers were on his katana in a second. He yielded his blade and turned around just as fast. Unfortunately the enemy was closer than Sougo expected. Kagura shrieked as Sougo's katana flew out of his hand with a powerful swing of the spear landing on his wrist.
Sougo hissed and the attacker didn't waste his element of surprise advantage. He kicked Sougo to his side. He landed against a rock next to Kagura. She saw him grunting, he had hit the rock head first. ”Sadist!” she called, but got no immediate answer.
Kagura turned to look at the man with the spear. He had a dead eyes, it was clear that no-matter who he faced, he would try to kill them. Kagura huffed and hastily tried to yank her leg out. Her efforts were futile.
The spear rose right in front of her eyes, ready to strike at her. Kagura gave up on her leg and prepared to stop the javelin with her hands. She wasn't sure was it possible but she didn't see any other option. Sougo's blurred vision started to clear out and all he saw was Kagura on the ground and the man about to launch his attack.
”No,” Sougo gritted between his teeth and pushed himself up. Kagura focused fiercely on the spear, but suddenly her whole line of sight was blocked by something or rather someone. A pair of hands slammed on Kagura's shoulders and she saw a flash of crimson orbs.
”Wha-” was all that Kagura got out of her mouth before blood spattered across her shirt. Her eyes stood wide and in utter disbelief. She saw Sougo right in front of her on his knees with a spear sticking out of his abdomen. He couched blood on the ground. ”W-what...?”
Just as fast as the man has struck with his spear he pulled it out of Sougo. He grunted from pain and Kagura felt him squeezing her shoulders tighter. ”C-china...”
Kagura was still too stunned to speak properly. She just watched the blood gushing out of his wound. His grip on her shoulders began to loosen and he slumped a little lower. Kagura listened to his raspy breathing and she could hear the blood gargling in his mouth. She tried to understand what had just happened. The sadist had jumped in front of the spear meant for her. She wanted to tell him how stupid he was for doing so, but this wasn't the time or place for that.
Their enemy was still there, apparently ready to strike again. Kagura felt her yato blood boiling, she wasn't going to let that happen. Sougo's hands slipped completely off her and he fell down on his side. Kagura clenched her fist and punched the ground under her, successfully breaking the crack where her leg was.
She knew it wasn't the smartest move, but it was the only way to protect both of them. As the ground cracked around her ankle, her wound deepened, but she didn't care. Kagura didn't waste a second and punched the man with all her yato might, sending him through three buildings in a distance. It was a punch like no-other, powered up by the anger she felt towards the man.
Kagura turned quickly to check on Sougo who had turned on his back. Blood was pooling under him, but he was still conscious. She rushed down to his level and checked his pulse. ”Oi! Sadist!” she called.
Sougo's breaths were short and wheezy, he was clearly in pain. ”Oi! Stay with me, yes.”
Kagura heard running steps coming closer to them. It was Kamui coming to check up on what took so long for Sougo to free her leg. ”Hey! What are you two chilling here when-”
”Shut up!”
Kamui's words were abruptly cut short by a distressed Kagura. ”Go and get help, now!” she ordered. Kamui stood few meters away from Kagura and Sougo, he couldn't quite see how dire the situation really was.
”Help? Did something hap-”
”HURRY UP BAKA-ANIKI!” Kagura roared. Kamui understood his sister wasn't playing around this time and he left to get help.
Kagura noticed that Sougo's skin was getting alarmingly pale, the warm colour of his skin was just the hollow shade of its normal state. She pressed his wound with her hand, trying her best to staunch the flow of blood. Sougo hissed at the pressure and opened his eyes.
Their eyes locked again, but Kagura wasn't sure what to say to him. Luckily he had something to say.
”Are you okay China?”
”Huh? Kagura voiced loudly. ”Me?”
”I...I just...” he said quietly as he struggled to breath.
”Stop talking, you're bleeding too much.”
”It's just...a little...scratch,” Sougo struggled to say with a smile on his face.
Kagura recalled herself using similar words earlier. He was truly an idiot, a reckless idiot, Kagura thought to herself with a heavy heart. She felt her eyes watering up, but she forbid herself from crying. There was no reason to cry, he was going to be fine...or that's what Kagura told herself to keep her mind calm.
”Stop talking nonsense, yes.”
Kagura kept her hand on his wound, but with her other hand she touched his cheek. It felt cold. Too cold. Despite the blood trails coming from his mouth, he had a peaceful look on his face. Then Sougo placed his hand over Kagura's hand on his cheek. He pressed his cheek against her hand and allowed his eyes to slid shut.
”Don't lose...don't...die...” Sougo breathed. ”...Chi-na...”
After calling her pet name rather sweetly, he fell unconscious. Kagura could only stare at him, helpless feeling taking over her brain. ”Sadist, oi! Now it's not the time to take a nap, yes.” She knew he didn't hear her anymore, but she didn't know what else to do.
Of course she blamed herself first, if her leg hadn't got stuck, none of this would have happened. But then again, she didn't ask for him to throw himself in front of the spear.
This wasn't the first time Sougo had done something drastic to save her, but this...this was on a whole other level. But why, that was the main question on Kagura's mind.
Kamui and the field medics arrived soon after Sougo fell unconscious. She watched as he was carried away and that was the moment she finally allowed herself to react. Kamui saw how shaken Kagura was about the whole situation and he knew exactly what he had to do.
”Hey sis, you have to forget about the earth police for now and get over it.”
Kagura turned to look at Kamui with a baffled look on her face. ”Forget? How can I forget him after he just-”
”Kagura!” Kamui called to stop her rambling. She waited in silence, tears burning in her eyes, ready to wet her cheeks.
Kamui sighed softly and place his hand on Kagura's shoulder. ”I mean, you can't undo what just happened, there's only one thing you can do right now.”
Kagura swallowed her tears. ”And what's that?”
”Fight. You can fight.”
Kagura pondered his words for a moment and she knew he was right. ”Fight?”
”Yes.”
”You have a point there Kamui,” she admitted.
”Let's go then,” Kamui said with his standard smile. Kagura hummed as her answer. She realized that fighting was her speciality. She was most useful fighting in the frontlines, not somewhere crying her eyes out.
”Ah, wait a second Kamui,” Kagura said and reached for something in her pocket. She pulled out a white piece of clothing.
”What's that?”
Kagura glanced at the fabric. She tried to ignore the fact that she accidentally smudged Sougo's blood all over the cravat. ”It's for my ankle,” she said and tied the piece of clothing around her wounded ankle, just like she was instructed by a brave idiot.
Kagura's ankle was still bleeding a little bit. As she ran with Kamui towards their enemy her own blood mixed with the stains of Sougo's blood on the cravat. It made it easier to pretend that it was her blood all along.

Kagura didn't answer his question, she was caught off guard by him waking up.
”China, is it really you?” Sougo asked and tried to open his eyes wider.
”Yeah, it's me,” she said quietly without looking at him.
”I see.”
The room felt sort of awkward. There were things Kagura wanted to get off her chest, but she wasn't sure was he in right shape to listen to her.
”How are you feeling?” Kagura asked quite formally.
Sougo got his eyes finally fully open. He looked at her straight into her eyes, but she didn't answer the glance. ”I'm okay.”
”Good.”
This must have been the only time Sougo saw Kagura so wordless and stoic, it wasn't like her at all.
”Hijikata told me you got your dog back.”
”I did.”
Sougo sighed, he didn't like that she was dodging his eyes. ”China?” he called with his usual tone, but Kagura picked up a hint of annoyance from him.
”What?”
”Why don't you just tell me what's on your mind, mmh?”
”I don't know what you're talking about sadist.”
Sougo closed his eyes and inhaled deeply. She was seriously the embodiment of stubbornness. ”I can see you have something to say China,” he said and opened his eyes. ”So get on with it.”
”You're wrong, yes.”
”Stop behaving like an idiot and talk to me,” Sougo said, voice on the edge of demanding.
”Idiot...me?” Kagura asked and looked at him. Idiot. That was the only word running through Kagura's mind. Him calling her an idiot finally triggered her vocal cords. Here we go, Sougo thought to himself and braced himself for what ever she had to say.
Kagura exhaled deeply and threw everything she was feeling at Sougo. ”I am not the idiot here. You are the idiot! A reckless idiot!”
”Me?” Sougo managed to say in between Kagura's words.
”Yes you! Who is stupid enough to jump into a spear? Huh? Who told you to jump there?”
”But-”
”Why the hell would you do something to careless? Risking your life for no-reason. Why? WHY?”
”BECAUSE!” Sougo raised his voice over Kagura's, successfully shutting her right up. He sure liked to run his mouth, but he didn't yell. Ever. Kagura's eyes were wide as she stared at him. He exhaled to calm down a bit.
”What was I supposed to do, huh? Let him run the spear through you?”
”Yes, it was meant for me,” Kagura said like it was the most obvious answer there could be.
”Oh please.”
”What?”
”Like I would never let that happen.”
”B-but...” Kagura said with voice cracking up. ”You could have died...I don't want you to die!” she said with tears in her eye.
Sougo huffed roughly and pushed himself to sit up, cautiously careful of his injury. She placed her hands on his shoulders. ”No, no! You need to rest, yes,” Kagura said and tried to push him back on the bed.
”I'm fine, now listen to me.”
Their faces were inches apart. His deep crimson eyes were staring right into her soul or that's what it felt like for Kagura.
”On the day I lost the most important person in my life I couldn't do anything to prevent it from happening, so I made a promise to myself.” Kagura listened carefully and focused on every word coming out of his lips.
”No matter the situation, I swore never to let that happen again. Even if it would cost me my own life, I would gladly die protecting that person.”
Kagura's heart skipped a beat. She sobbed a little, slowly understanding what he was saying.
”Am I..the most..?” Kagura asked quietly, half of the words drowning with her tears. She slowly dropped her hands from his shoulders to his chest.
”Yes,” Sougo simply said with gentle eyes. She felt overwhelmed, was this really the same Okita Sougo she had known all these years. Apparently he was. Kagura grasped his yukata with both hands and leaned closer to him with a hitched breath.

Gintoki entered a hallway in the Shinsengumi quarters. Hijikata was right behind him, guiding him towards Sougo's room. ”So, is Sofa-kun going to be alright?” Gintoki inquired, genuinely worried.
”Thankfully yes. He was really lucky the spear didn't hit any vital organs,” Hijikata explained.
Before they reached Sougo's room, his door was slammed wide open. Kagura rushed out of the room as fast as she could. ”Kagura? Are you okay?” Gintoki asked, but he didn't get any answers from her. Kagura dashed past the two men while covering her face with her arm.
Gintoki looked dumbfounded, he was like John Travolta looking confused as fuck, waving the air with an imaginary coat. Hijikata got instantly worried about Sougo, had something happened to him to make the young yato woman act so strangely.
”China?!” Sougo's voice called from the room. Gintoki and Hijikata enter Sougo's room like two worried dads.
”What the hell happened here?” Gintoki asked.
Sougo was still sitting on his bed, with an amused look on his face.
”Are you hurt?” Hijikata asked.
”No.”
”Kagura just ran past us and she was really shaken,” Gintoki said and immediately suspected that the sadistic captain had something to do with it. ”Did you say something bad to her?”
”No.”
”Well, did you do something to her?” Gintoki asked, slightly afraid of the answer.
”Um...no.”
”Why the hesitation?” Gintoki asked eyes squinted.
”Sougo is still recovering, stop harassing him perm-head,” Hijikata hissed.
”It's okay Hijibaka-san,” Sougo said to his superior. ”I didn't do anything...it was all her.”
”What?” Gintoki asked, he didn't like puzzles or cryptic answers.
”Ah, nothing danna. Maybe I should get some rest,” Sougo said and carefully laid back to his bed.
Hijikata had to drag out the suspicious Gintoki out of the room as he was throwing more and more questions at Sougo, who only gave annoyingly vague answers.
Meanwhile Kagura reached the Shinsengumi's gates. She exited the compound and leaned against the outer walls near the gate. Her back against the wall, she slowly let her whole body slide down all the way to the ground.
Kagura's breathing was fast but not as rapid as her heartbeat. She touched her lips with her fingers like there was something new and exciting to feel. As a cute smile curled on her lips the heavy blush on her cheeks spread even wider.

Step by Step - 1
Step 1 - One Favour Okita was comfortably napping on the bench when Kagura arrived. She sat just beside him, closer than she usually would, and waited for him to greet her first. She knew he wasn't sleeping, anyway.
She shouldn't be asking him for help. It was a bad idea but there was no one else to turn to for this.
As she grew older Kagura was confronted to the very specific female wars upon meeting the girls in the park. All of them had grown beautifully with the dangerous habit of throwing a shade or two in between smiles and sweet voices. Kagura was a strong warrior, she packed punches and kicks that could destroy a spaceship but this was an art nobody taught her and she could only bear with those poisonous words with an uncomfortable laugh.
It wasn't always like this. Before, they were all good friends she liked to chat with— innocent girls babbling about adult life, first love and TV shows. Stuff like that. Now she could feel their envious eyes piercing her back, the obvious tinge of jealousy as they talked about how exotic Kagura was; as if she didn't belong here. And then all became even worse when they fawned over him.
Okita Sougo, a full-time rival and part-time friend and most importantly, the prodigy of the Shinsengumi. He was surprisingly popular with girls of her age if she believed her friends Okita was handsome, young, mysterious and rich. They yearned for him and despite Kagura warning them of his sadistic tendency they either loved it or thought themselves of being able to 'heal' his lonely heart. Because Kagura was considered to be the closest female to Okita, even if they just spent their time bickering and sparring her friends saw her as a rival. An eyesore to their love.
So it came to this. They would be slowly slipping a sentence or two on how Kagura should find someone for herself. Someone who would suit her— a foreign alien prince, perhaps? Of how Amantos and humans hated each other and how everything would be complicated if she were to fall for Okita. That they heard Okita, a countryside samurai, loved the elegant Yamato Nadashiko1 type of woman with long and dark hair. The epitome of a Japanese beauty which meant everything Kagura wasn't.
She hated Okita Sougo for everything. For existing and annoying her, first and turning her rate female friends into she-monsters but most importantly, for making her feel like that. She always acted as if it didn't matter to her but their words hurt; a lot. She knew she was an Amanto, a Yato at that but Earth already became her home and many Earthlings became her friends and family. And there was him.
Okita Sougo.
Nearing the end of her fourteen some madness took upon her and she sneaked into this man's room in order to find his most shameful secret. Little did she know that his collection of magazines would only curse her. She disliked how he liked women very different from her, both in appearance and personality. It felt wrong. Her stomach churned for a long time before realising that as strange it sounded, Kagura wanted his attention. She was his one and only rival after all, why should his eyes stray away from her?
She didn't understand why she became like this, so weak. She used to ignore all negativity thrown at her because she trusted her heart above all and embraced her pride but nowadays she would avoid Okita just so she wouldn't think of their words.
She didn't want to be an outsider. Earth became her home, her friends and family were mostly Earthlings and this was to the point she considered herself to be a human— both a human and a Yato. It scared her that the girls might have leaked some truth along with the jealousy. The idea of being rejected hurt but the idea of being rejected by Okita was terrifying. She was scared to find out why.
But today this fear will be no more. She couldn't spend her time avoiding Okita and get injured by silly words— she was a woman now. These past days Kagura had visited many women for advice: her best friend, her big sister, one courtesan and one stalker, they all helped her in devising a plan.
Seducing Okita. This was what she was going to do, as Sacchan put it there was no better way of learning about these weird feelings with the concerned. They had always been better at actions rather than words and if she succeeded all her female friends would also shut their mouth. Problem solved.
Kagure walked out from her closet with an expensive dark blue qipao with golden pattern Tsukkuyo gave her. It hugged the curves of her body as well as showing off her legs with a higher slit than usual. Her hair was let down for once while she plunged her little finger on a pink pot. Her finger swiped across her pouty lips, now coat pink and glossy.
For her eighteenth birthday a lot of people gifted her nice things. Perfumes, creams, makeup, dresses and such— womanly things. She never used them before because it was not only a hassle but since she was out to play or spare it would only become a waste.
Kagura stepped confidently out of the Yorozuya and walked toward the park and her favourite bench. She could feel eyes on her as she made her way but instead of being overwhelmed Kagura felt like her pride inflated. She was the queen of Kabuki-Cho after all.
"Have you had enough of avoiding me, China?" He asked in a lazy drawl as he removed his eye mask. He glanced at her outfit without saying anything but Kagura noticed a hint of irritation on his face.
"You're just missing me."
"That's right, I've been itching to crush your face on the floor. Hijikata-san had to do for now, shouldn't you take responsibility for his face? It's even uglier than before."
"Why am I brought in this?" Kagura raised her voice. This man could make her blood rise in more than one way. "Isn't that just because you're a sadistic asshole?"
"Big words shouldn't be used by brats like you."
Again. He always sternly told her she was a brat, the same way he did four years ago— what was wrong with him or his eyes?! It was very obvious she grew up into a beautiful woman.
"I'm not a brat," she mustered through all the embarrassment and insecurity. "Everyone says so."
"Well, it's true you're less of a shrimp now but inside you're still the stupid brat we know."
"Fine!" Kagura stood up abruptly and glared at him. "You know, I wanted to ask you first but since I'm just a brat for you I'll go look for someone else!"
She was about to dash away and go back crying in her closet but surprisingly, he caught her. His hand held her wrist as Okita's frown became more apparent.
"Where do you think you're going, China? We didn't even fight yet."
"You can go fight someone who's not a brat!"
"Why are you so sensible today?" He demanded, this time gentler. "And what did you want to ask me?"
Kagura looked away.
"Oi."
"China?"
"The cat's got your tongue or somethin'?"
Kagura still refused to look at him, all the bravery she had collected just spilled out. This was a stupid idea from the very start.
"I just wanted you to go and die. That was my request," she finally answered coldly.
"So you're going to ask someone else to kill me?" Okita's brow rose up along with the right corner of his mouth. "You don't know how to lie, China."
What is he doing?! It didn't take a genius to understand she didn't want to speak, any normal man would drop the subject and let the lady go. Okita Sougo; however, was the king of the Sadists planet and he couldn't do that, could he? It would be too kind of him.
"Policemen shouldn't be harassing beautiful maidens like this Kagura-sama."
"I don't see any maiden," he pulled her closer until she was sat on the bench again, with him standing before her and blocking any escape route. She could simply destroy the bench or him altogether but Gin-chan couldn't waste more money or else there wouldn't be any food left for her and Sadaharu. "And," he caught her attention again, "you shouldn't leave people hanging you know?"
"You'll let me go if I tell you?"
The infuriating man smiled widely, the side of his index connected with his mouth. "That depends on what you're going to say."
Kagura waited. One, two, three minutes passed as Okita continued to grin at her. He wasn't going to let her go.
"Fine," Kagura crossed her arms. "You can't laugh at me Sadist, if you do I'll kill you!"
"Hn."
"I wanted to, I wanted you to teach me." She looked away again, suddenly finding the lonely stone behind the bench interesting.
"Teach what? Glasses and Boss taught you how to read and write already, right?"
"Not that," she shook her head, not knowing where or how to start. It all seemed so clear in her mind until it was really happening. "A maiden has to get experience until the day I find my mate, so…"
"So?"
"I wanted you to teach me. Hand-holding, kisses, sex, stuff like that. Don't laugh! I'm going to find someone else anyway," and then a soft, pained mumble, "cause' you're too dumb."
"Wait." Okita rubbed the bridge of his nose in a tired manner. "What did you just spout China?"
"You heard it already!"
His hand slid from his face to the length if her arm and finally, caught her shoulder with a great strength. "Why me? No, nevermind, who are you going to ask if not me?"
"This Kagura-sama has plenty of suitors you know?" She tried to slap away his hand but he wouldn't budge, this damned man. "Now go away Sadist." "I never said I'll let you go if you said it," he corrected her with the grin she both loved and hated. At the moment, she was hating it. "Since when are you so serious China? Don't tell me you've fallen for this handsome policeman, since when does these kinds of words mattered to us?' "Since I decided so," she replied. She knew that he didn't really mean what he said, the same way she spent years insulting him without ever hating him but somehow her heart would sting and her stomach knot if he mocked her. She was angry at herself for becoming like this and not exactly knowing *why*. She was scared. And she wanted to leave. Quickly. "You're acting as if I'll be rejecting you," Kagura mildly wondered why this sounded like one of these *shojo* confessions, "I accept." "I knew you would ref-" Kagura stopped talking. She blinked once. Twice. "You…" She doubted his words, this could be just another prank of his but he sounded and looked so serious. And his hand, he should remove his hands from her shoulders it was so warm, "you're not joking, right? Did you hide a camera somewhere?" She looked right and left, finding no apparent cameras. "A recorder?" "That's mean China," his hand finally relinquished of its grasp on her shoulders but instead of removing it altogether Okita slid it again to reach her hand. His calloused fingers were wrapped around her hand, "I said I accept it, I'll teach you but under two conditions." Okita took her silence as an approval, appreciating how bashful she had just become, "first you must not try or experience with another man or woman. It is the same for me. And for the second rule everything happen in my room," he glanced at her, "do you agree?" The first rule was easy to accept, Kagura didn't like when he was with someone else, anyway. The second rule was surprising, she thought they would go to a shady Love Hotel— they were in Kabuki-Ho, after all— but perhaps he didn't want to pay every time. "Okay." Kagura couldn't believe her request went so well, she didn't expect anything would be easy with him at all. "It's a deal then," Okita nodded, "let's go then." "Wait— *right now*?" He cocked an eyebrow at her, "of course dumb China. Why else would you go out looking like this?" His head motioned to her dress and her hair, Kagura wondered if he disliked them so much that he wanted her undressed already. She thought the blue suited her. "Don't you have a patrol?' "Well, criminals can wait," he deadpanned as usual. Okita was mysterious sometimes, Kagura had always been able to read him well but there were moments she couldn't understand him at all— for example, despite looking so cold and assertive why was his hand so warm and gentle? "I can't stay too late, just so you know." "Don't worry about that," he laughed, "I will go easy on you for now." Kagura wondered what it meant, as they walked together toward the Shinsengumi with their fingers tangled.
The ideal Japanese woman, full of virtues.  ↩

under cover [4/5?]
Kondo began to think that even gorillas were smarter than him. After all, who else would dare put - by their own hands - the undercover-courtesan-love-of-their-life and their love rival together in a steamy, compromising position?

It took Kondo all he had to not tear his hair out.
“Tottsan! What did I do to deserve this special kind of hell?!” he almost wailed, clutching at his boss’s coat.
Matsudaira calmly took a puff from his cigar, undeterred. “What’s the matter? Aren’t you an M? You should be enjoying this.”
“You definitely took it the wrong way!”
In the cramped surveillance van, Kondo’s protests sounded louder than they actually were. The smoke from Matsudaira’s cigar was also an unwelcome distraction. Yamazaki tried to cough into his hand as silently as he could; why did the supreme boss of the police force have to be in there with them in the first place? Wasn’t this job a bit too…low-scale for him to be present?
“I was in the area,” he answered, when Kondo asked him. “I thought, why not? Besides, it’s like a live show.”
Kondo’s eyes widened. “Live show?!”
The older man only snickered as his eyes went from monitor to monitor. Once Kondo realized there was no getting a straight answer from their boss, he slumped onto the seat next to Yamazaki.
Before them were a set of screens, showing what was happening in different areas of the house. One monitor showed the Yorozuya’s little girl dressed as an apprentice and hiding in a secret closet on the second floor. Another showed Shinpachi clothed in black, hiding behind a set of crates and an airconditioning unit in the alley beside the house. Okita was concealed in a false wall on the back of the bedroom, while Hijikata was camped out on the building across the back entrance. Gintoki, now with sleek black hair and donning simple Edo-style clothes, was standing by the front foyer, sword in hand.
Yamazaki watched with wonder as the Yorozuya buried his face in his hands. In another monitor, their stunning Crimson Beauty of Kabuki-cho was doing the same.
“Eh, this is strange,” Yamazaki pointed out. Kondo stopped his grumbling and looked. “They’re both acting weird, Chief.”
“Look at her, she’s so beautiful,” Kondo ignored Yamazaki and placed his hand on the monitor, as if touching Tae’s face. “Otae-san, I will give all of my life savings to buy you out of this wretched city –”
He was abruptly cut off when one of their receivers buzzed.
“Target just entered the perimeter. Contact in ten minutes.”
The surveillance team eyed the monitors. True enough, by the shadows of Kabuki-cho’s sidestreets, two cloaked men were making their way to the house.
Kondo and Yamazaki watched the monitors intently.
“Why do they keep shaking their heads?” Yamazaki noted, glancing at Gin and Tae. He then pressed a button on the panel, activating their communication. “Kagura-san, please notify Shimura-san to get ready. Contact in ten.”
“Got it, Mountain Zaki!”
“Operation, commence. Be on your guard.” Kondo took over the microphone. “Especially you, Yorozuya. You as much as try – ”
Hijikata groaned. “Chief, you’re going off-topic here.”
“Right.” Kondo laughed sheepishly. He shot a nervous glance towards Tae, who was now calming herself down with deep breaths. He tried fighting against this assignment, but Matsudaira had pushed that it was crucial for them to do it this way. His stupid mouth suggested Tae’s beauty would be a perfect fit. In essence, he somehow put her in that position.
Plus, there was really no way to say no to Tottsan.
“Ah, she’s a good one, isn’t she?” he heard the boss say. “All calm even if we didn’t give her a comm set.”
“It might get discovered and compromise the mission,” Kondo said. “If she can hear what’s going on, it might affect her acting.”
“True enough.” Matsudaira took another puff, eyes gleaming behind his sunglasses.
Kondo’s eyes roved all over the screens. The two hooded figures were making their way steadily past the crowds and into the quieter streets.
“Tottsan,” Kondo started, “Shouldn’t you tell us at least the name of the target by now? Your briefing for this mission was the vaguest we’ve ever gotten.”
Matsudaira took a moment before responding. “Just trust me. I had an…interesting chat with a loud, drunk idiot at Club Smile. He gave me an idea.”
Kondo frowned. Tae was now smoothing down her oiran kimono as she settled by the door, where she would bow once the target came in. “Should we really trust loud, drunk idiots?”
“You’re not drunk, but you’re a loud idiot and I trust you, don’t I?” Matsudaira smirked as he hung the cigar on his lips. “Besides, he wears sunglasses, just like me. Can’t go wrong with sunglasses.”
He ignored Kondo, who was about to protest once again.
“Anyway, all you need to know is that he’s an enemy of the state. A pretty crafty bastard, so we needed to get crafty too.”
“Target contact in three minutes.” Yamazaki spoke up. “Sakata-san, please ignore our liaison agent. He’ll stay on the first floor as the target goes to the site. Don’t make eye contact until given the go-signal.”
On the monitor, Gin gave a nod of acknowledgment.
The two figures were already near the house. A heavy feeling started to settle itself in Kondo’s stomach. Even through the monitor, their target gave off a sinister vibe.
“Target on site. Now ascending.”
Each step the target took felt like an added weight to Kondo. There was something very bad about this, his gut told him, and he couldn’t shake it off. He kept his eyes transfixed on the hooded figure, now on the second floor, just a few steps away from Tae’s dimly-lit receiving room.
The target stopped. He seemed to be deep in thought as he gave a second glance to the stairwell. Kondo watched with bated breath as the figure shook off whatever thought he had and went back to going towards Tae’s room. Gingerly, the target took off its cloak.
As the hood fell away, Kondo felt all the air being knocked out of his lungs.
He could barely speak. “Tottsan -- !”
Even Yamazaki gasped. “Chief, this is bad – ”
“You never would have agreed if you knew.” Matsudaira said matter-of-factly. The end of his cigar glowed bright red as he pulled from it.
“But this…” Yamazaki managed. He eyed the comm system button. Should he warn everyone, at least?
He glanced their Chief, but Kondo’s eyes were wide in shock as he watched the monitors. The figure was now standing right before the room’s shoji doors, his silhouette a dark shape against its paper panels.
Matsudaira clucked his tongue. He could see Kondo’s clenched fist on the dashboard. “If you compromise this mission, Kondo, your agent will bear the brunt of it.” He said plainly, both a warning and advice.
Kondo’s knuckles turned white. He took a deep breath, then nodded to himself. “No one would compromise this mission.”
Matsudaira blew out the smoke in a steady stream. Behind the haze, he seemed like he was grinning. “Right? That’s why we got them, after all.”
 -
The stillness of the house was unnerving. Especially whenever she remembered that most formidable fighters in Edo were stationed around it, not making a sound.
She tried to stop her face from showing any emotion whenever she remembered it. Shinpachi, who usually bawled over Otsu and screamed through his straight-man routines; bubblegum-chewing Okita-san who never stopped arguing with noisemaker extraordinaire Kagura; Hijikata-san, who told everyone off to commit seppuku no matter when and where - they were all still and silent, expertly hidden from view. It made her smile with pride, but also made her realize just how drastically they could change when combat was imminent.
Aren’t you leaving someone out?
Her own personal bodyguard, as Kagura had put it, was the most disconcerting of them all.
Stupid perm-head.
Tae sighed and placed her hands before her knees. In this atmosphere, it was hard not to remember that night. It was harder not to remember how normal he acted the day after. The next morning, he was calmly picking his nose by the breakfast table, all splayed out, watching the TV with his head resting on a propped-up hand. Upon her entrance, he merely threw her a glance, flicked the snot off his finger, and greeted her with a lame ‘yo.’ He was so nonchalant about it, she was almost convinced that the night before was just a dream.
From then on, there was no mention of their kiss. He joked with her the same, talked to her brother the same, never talked to her about what happened, nor did anything to even hint at what they had done. The idea of bringing it up suddenly felt forbidden. It came to a point where Tae started to doubt herself. Was she really overreacting? Maybe he saw kisses as commonplace as hugs. Was she alone in feeling that electricity when they kissed? Maybe because it was her first that she added meaning to it immediately. And why did he stop? She wasn’t born yesterday; she had seen people kissing deeply before. If his point was to teach her, he should’ve at least shown her how to do that. But he merely walked off and acted like it never happened. Maybe the reason he didn’t bother with her was that he was never really interested in her at all.
Tae bit back a groan of frustration. Could it have been that she was the one at fault? Was it her problem, that deep inside her, somehow, she entertained the idea of wanting something more…?
This is stupid. As weeks rolled by, Tae fought hard to convince herself to stop obsessing about that moment. A kiss with Gin-san wasn’t even a moment to be proud of, was it? But she couldn’t help but feel guilty whenever she saw Sarutobi, Tsukuyo, Kondo and even Kyuubei. It’s as if she had sinned against them, and it was a sin she wasn’t particularly ashamed of. That night, with his dazed look, his warm lips, that soft kiss…for her to remember it so vividly, surely it was no dream.
Thud.
The noise brought Tae out of her thoughts. The target was ascending the stairs; whatever light came from the laps by the hallway was now beginning to be eclipsed by a figure of a man. She took a deep breath to calm herself down.  This is no time to think about Gin-san.
The figure stopped in front of her shoji door, his silhouette a stark mark against the panels. She steeled herself and bowed; soon enough, the doors slid open, wood creaking against wood.
Tae pressed her forehead on her hand in a deep bow.
“Good evening, danna,” She spoke in the meekest voice she could muster. “I am pleased to be of service to you tonight. They call me Hinagiku.”
It took a while before the target replied.
“I hear they call you The Crimson Beauty. …it would seem that they tell no lies.”
“A mere moniker, danna.” Tae then rose from her bow, her kimono gracefully following her every move. She gave a soft nod and looked the target in the eye. Her breath stilled. “But it pleases me to hear your worries have been quelled.”
The target cocked his head to the side and closed the shoji door behind him. “Might be so,” he said, taking a step nearer.
Tae swallowed a lump in her throat. The target was leagues away from what they had all expected. She had been anticipating some old, wrinkly politician, or a potbellied corrupt yakuza, or even a hybrid Amanto pirate. Katsura and the others were even taking bets. But the man who stood before her was different – too different. He had a slender build, covered in kimonos of rich purple, red, and gold. Soft, dark hair framed his youthful face. The only thing that would raise questions were the bandages that covered his left eye. They were wound around his head, slightly hidden by his fringe, strangely reminding her of Kyuubei, Gin, and war.
“How do you wish to be called, danna?”
He crossed the room slowly, taking every step mindfully. Tae found that she couldn’t take her eyes off him; something about him was magnetic.
“If you really must…” he then deposited himself by the slightly opened window. The lights of Kabuki-cho shone on his face and made his remaining eye gleam. “…Shinsuke would be fine.”

includes spoilers up to ch 673
hijikata’s phone vibrates in the middle of his conversation with gin and because he’s a rude, mannerless heathen, he looks at the message he received, snorts in amusement, and then proceeds to type out a response. he ignores gin, and because gin is gin, he kicks hijikata under the table.
“oi!” gin yells. “don’t use your phone when you’re in the company of others.”
“actual manners, huh?” hijikata looks up briefly. “it’s a shame you didn’t teach this kind of wholesome stuff to your kid when she was still living with you.”
“i taught kagura-chan plenty of wholesome stuff.”
“like to payback double what’s dealt to you?”
“that is wholesome!” gin scratches his chin. “depending on the context.”
“right.” hijikata just shakes his head and resumes whatever message he’s typing out.
gin doesn’t mean to be vying for attention, but he supposes that’s just what happens when you’ve been separated from someone that matters for so long, only for them to get distracted by a damn text message. gin is in the middle of planning how to make hijikata look at him when hijikata holds out his phone for him to see.
gin expects something regarding takasugi’s action these past years and the remains of the tendoshu. instead he sees a selfie of what seems to be a more grown up version of souchiro-kun, a pretty redhead that looked a little too familiar pressed up beside him, and a giant white fur ball with them too. in the background is a pile of unconscious soldiers from who knows what army.
“no,” gin breathes, leaning back into his chair. “no...no way! what?”
hijikata just takes his phone back when sougo sends him another message. he proceeds to type away while explaining, “the china girl did me a favour and broke sougo out of prison two years ago.”
“she’s supposed to be in space!”
“she is,” hijikata confirms. “with sougo.”
“why?!”
“i figured they could work together considering they would have the same stops. i needed someone to investigate the acts of terror taking place on the planets the tendoshu had been controlling.”
“and kagura-chan?”
“she was going to those planets too, albeit for a different reason.” hijikata takes a drag of his cigarette. “i gave her the ship to do all that provided she be sougo’s partner through this--”
hijikata yelps when gin leaps across the table, driven by the same sort of paternal protectiveness that gin hasn’t really had to feel in a very long time. gin recalls the image of kagura-chan, older and pressed up beside sofa-kun for a selfie to send hijikata for whatever stupid reason and almost cries.
did they take selfies together? were they together a lot? how many beds did their ship have?!
“sometimes. yes, naturally. and two.”
“what?”
hijikata pushes gin away and scrolls through his phone. when he gets to the album of images sougo has sent him over the years, hijikata hands it to gin. at the beginning, the photos were clearly just work related, showing hijikata the revolutions taking place and how all the nations were prospering, but soon kagura started appearing in the pictures, usually at a distance posing cutely. and then there were selfies. they were making it a thing to take selfies together with their beaten opponents in the background. and in the most recent photos, sadaharu was there too.
what. the. hell.
“don’t get the wrong idea,” hijikata says. “they were both brats about it at first. sougo wanted to work alone, but china girl actually knows how to travel through space. that and i just--” he rubs the back of his neck. “i didn’t really like the idea of leaving him all alone.”
gin sneers at him. “so you set him up with kagura-chan?!”
“i didn’t set them up,” hijikata insists. “all i did was tell them to work together for their goals!” he shrugs. “they just ended up together.”
“but do you know that for sure?”
“know what?”
“that they’re together. like...coupley.”
“oh.” hijikata pauses before shrugging and looking away. “no, i suppose i don’t know for sure. sougo’s never explicitly said anything.”
“good.”
he makes a face. “but i know sougo. he’s been different.”
“well travelling through former war zones in space probably makes you that way!”
hijikata just sighs. sougo’s never once referred to the nature of his relationship with kagura in any of his reports, but there’s something about the way they look together in the occasional selfie they send that tells hijikata that they’re something more than just terrorist-hunting partners.
“whatever you say, yorozuya.”
gin scowls. “don’t say that! now you’re making it sound like--”
“i don’t want to talk about sougo and china girl anymore,” hijikata interrupts.
“huh?” gin blinks, because being one track minded about kagura and boys often left him unaware of all other topics. “what? well what else is there?”
hijikata rolls his eyes. he leans back and lights another cigarette. “you,” he suggests. “and me.” he shrugs. “us.”
“us?” gin echoes. hijikata nods and gin forces a grimace to hide his small smile. “us -- tch, don’t say it like that you loser.”

Pairing: Okita Sougo/Kagura
Rating: T
Words: 1675
Summary:
Sougo was drunk and his mouth loosen up to some shocking revelations to Kagura.
He sighed reading the message that just came in. Kagura had bailed on him again for the third time this week, eleventh in the last month. Yes, he kept track of it all.
Ever since she and her brother made up, he had entrusted Yoshiwara -that he so called has power over- to Kagura. Of course his sister wasn’t ruling it like Hosen, she was just there to make sure that none of the higher ups authority from Harusame got handsy and wanted the territory for themselves instead. So, her being there in place of her brother was acting like a guardian. She’s been working more with Hyakka and now is living there with Tsukuyo, helping out with keeping the men visiting there in check. With her getting older, it was getting a tad bit inappropriate for her to still be living with Gintoki in Yorozuya, plus she has outgrown the closet she’s been sleeping in for years, she needed a bigger place anyway.
Sougo was all for her moving to Yoshiwara, compared to the alternative of her following her brother or bald father to space. But he didn’t expect for her new role to be quite time consuming.
As a Shinsengumi officer, he has his fair share of night shifts that involved patrolling, staking out and even invading the joui member’s hideout place, but Hyakka works solely at night due to the nature of activities being done there happened when the sun is no longer above their heads. Yes, there are some that worked during the day, but it only made sense to put someone as strong as Kagura to be handling their drunken patrons that wander during the evening.
He gulped the sake in front of him and signaled for the barman to fill it up. If his girlfriend was gonna ignore him that night, he would have to entertain himself. When the second bottle rolled in, his vision was getting hazy and he was starting to think that he had grown a couple more hands.
“Shit, I’m -hick- drun -hick- k.”
“Yup, you definitely are.” Slowly he looked up from his cup to the familiar voice coming from his side.
“Oh, look who decided to -hick- show up.” He recognized that vermilion head anywhere even when what he saw first was more of a pink smudge before they focused to see his girlfriend.
“What are you doing?”
He lifted his cup to her, “Drinking.” and was about to gulp it down when the cup disappeared from his grasp. He blinked twice trying to figure out where it had gone. Maybe he has some magic power inside of him that he was just discovering about.
“Nope, you’ve had enough. I’m taking you home.” She paid the guy behind the bar and decided that picking Sougo up would make walking far easier for the both of them. Not that the sadist know how to walk straight anyway.
A sober Sougo would never let her give him a piggyback ride but with his head safely tucked behind her head, sniffing her familiar sweet scent that he hadn’t smelt for awhile, he let her use her strength on him.
“If you threw up on me, I’ll kill you.” He only chuckled at her threat and soon enough, the slow sways of her walk to the Shinsengumi sleeping quarters lulled him to sleep.
She had to quietly sneak into the place, the quarters isn’t a place where girls are allowed to be casually getting in and out. Something about Hijikata making them do seppuku, not that that had ever stopped them before.
The minute she put him down from her back, his eyes fluttered open and he painfully groaned.
“Shut up, you’re gonna wake up that mayora freak. And take off your shirt.” Kagura hushed at him as she laid out his futon and took out his pajamas for him to change into.
When she turned around, she just smiled as his fingers fumbled awkwardly with his vest buttons.
“Gosh, you’re hopeless.” A hint of amusement laced her words as she took over to help him strip himself from his Shinsengumi uniform.
“And you’re pretty.” Her eyes went up from his shirt to look at him only to find that he was staring at her. He never compliments her that directly. Usually, it would be decorated with insults or sarcastic comments while they were trying to punch each other.
Definitely drunk.
After helping him put on his pajamas, she was ready to get up and leave to continue her patrol in Yoshiwara. As soon as she got up, she fell back to the tatami mat with a single pull.
“Sadist, what the fuck-“
“Stay.” She couldn’t see him properly with it being so dark in there, but the silhouette of his face and his eyes were apparent as they stared deeply at her.
She didn’t have time to protest when she felt his hands snaked her waist as he pulled her into his arms and buried his face by the side of her face.
“Please.” His plea was a mere whisper, sounding so intimate yet a tint of desperation was also there. Not a sadistic demand, just a simple request which tugged the deepest part of her heart and her arm came up to wrap itself around him with the other soothingly touched his hair.
“I don’t see you anymore these days. I know you’re busy and I respect that, but will I always be your second choice? Just something you’ll think about when you have the time, which you never do.”
“Please stop. You know that’s not true.” She pushed herself from him to look him in the eyes in the hopes that he would believe her words. Kagura didn’t know he ever felt that way. The only thing they ever do when they go out was banter and duel with one another. They had done that for years and to all honesty she was getting a bit tired of it the older she gets. She figured he wouldn’t mind skipping a few of their useless fights as she buried herself around her new responsibilities.
But how can she know that he was feeling all of these things? He was too arrogant to tell her his feelings. She knows he’s not big with communication, especially the ones that actually involved his feelings. But there was only so much of guessing and assuming she could do to get by with his encrypted words and actions. Does she need to get him drunk every time she wants to know what he’s really thinking about? Dating that sadist freak was very confusing, but damn his handsome face and his perfect eyes and his abs-
Getting sidetracked there.
So, she kissed him, a lingering peck which she didn’t deepen. He was drunk and she didn’t want him to get the wrong idea. They connected their foreheads together and she played with the hairs on his nape, something she knows he really liked.
“I’ll stay.” He smiled and kissed her again before they both made themselves comfortable sharing his futon.
“Ugh.” Sougo shifted his position as carefully as he could, not wanting to worsen his already horrible headache. And his right shoulder was numb, feeling something heavy on top of it as he tried to stretch his sore muscles. He squinted one of his eyes open to see the strands of her beautiful vermilion hair.
Beautiful, but still heavy.
“Chi-na.” He groaned her name in a whisper, too much noise his head will burst open right then and there. God, his throat felt like someone poured acid into his mouth, just scratching the wall of his pipe.
Thankfully, Kagura stirred herself awake, and rubbed her sleepy eyes open.
“What time is it?”
“6-ish.” She grabbed her phone and grunted as she dropped it back to the tatami mat. The slight sound was elephant to his ears and he winced at the thump.
“That’s what you get for drinking too much last night.”
“Leaving already?” Kagura slipped into her hyakka uniform and sat next to him. She smiled sweetly at her boyfriend and held his face, gently rubbing her thumbs on his cheeks.
“You made me stay last night. Now, I’m probably gonna get killed by Tsukki.” She dipped her head down and kissed him on his mouth, tasting the sake that lingered.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about. No one would stop you from leaving last night if you wanted to.”
“Not when you were clinging onto me like a koala bear to a tree.”
“Nope, don’t know what you’re talking about.” The side of his mouth perked upwards slightly, trying to contain his smile. He remembered all of it. And damn he wouldn’t be able to look her in the eyes after this when he sobered up.
“I’ll try talking to Tsukki into giving me some days off this weekend. I haven’t seen Gin-chan for awhile anyway. So, you wanna go on a date then?” He snorted and closed his eyes, not wanting her to know that he was really offended by her recent behaviors.
“That’s what you said before.”
“Hey.” His eyes shot open when he felt her straddling him and trapped his head between her two arms, so he had nowhere to look at other than at her.
“I’m really sorry, okay. I didn’t know you were- well, I didn’t know. But I promise this time. I’ll leave my umbrella here. That way I’ll have a reason to come back.”
“Shouldn’t I be reason enough?”
“You are. And if I break my promise, you’re free to shoot me with it or Hijikata, whichever seemed better at that time.” He smiled at that proposition and brought his hand up to tuck one of her hair strands behind her ear before pulling her back to him for another kiss.
“Not that I don’t like you in this position, but you might wanna run before Hijikata wakes up.”
“Right. Hope you get that hangover dealt with soon.”
“I will.”

Street War – Chapter 19
“Gin-chan, you idiot!” Kagura yelled, to the agreement of most of the rest of the Yorozuya members in the room. Their hideout was well-sized, having been repurposed out of an abandoned school building, and comfortably fit the entirety of the Yorozuya. It did not take much effort to round up all of the members – outside of the Yorozuya activities, no-one had much to do.
“I cannot believe that you let yourself be played by that Shinsengumi dog!” she continued, her voice grating against Gintoki’s ears. “And you call yourself our leader?!” Gintoki sighed. “Now, now – I’m drunk and I don’t need my daughter adding to my headache,” he declared, massaging his temples with his index and middle fingers. “What’s done is done, and it’s not like I can go back and undo it now. We’re just gonna have to fight and deal with whatever consequences come out of it should we lose.”
From her seated position by the window, Otae scoffed. “My, my,” she haughtily breathed out, her arms crossed over her weapon of choice – a long wooden rod. “Kagura-chan’s right. I cannot believe our leader has become such a weakling.” “Huh?” came Gintoki’s confused reply. Next to Otae, Shinpachi fixed the positioning of his glasses. ““Deal with whatever consequences come out of it should we lose”, you say?” the bespectacled boy reiterated. “You sound like you’ve lost your will to fight, already.” There were murmurs amongst the Yorozuya. Gintoki’s eyes narrowed. ““Lost [my] will to fight”? I’ve got enough will for the lot of you!” he proclaimed, standing up to address the entirety of his gang.
The previously downcast mood of the room suddenly changed, doubtful murmuring switching to jubilant cheers. All of the members of the gang rose and either struck their weapons together or crossed fists in glee. “Don’t worry, Gintoki! Even if you’re an idiot, we’ll still follow you to the ends of the Earth!” At Gintoki’s side, Tsukuyo and Kamui smiled as they watched the members of the Yorozuya show their delight with violence and skinship. Both turned their gaze to the man who stood tall at the forefront of the Yorozuya. This was the man that they had chosen to follow – only the White Demon could tame this pack of ruffians with little more than a few words in their direction. “Those Shinsengumi dogs had better watch their tails, tonight. We’ll paint Tokyo’s streets with their defeat!” A chorus of cheers erupted as the members of the Yorozuya began splitting into their assigned combat groups in preparation for the fight.
Gintoki and Kamui began their walk amongst the groups, maintaining order throughout the chaos. Tsukuyo made to join them, when she noticed a momentary look of conflict flash across Kagura’s face. “Kagura?” Tsukuyo asked, her eyes carrying with them a look of concern. “Is there something wrong?” Kagura looked up, her lips turning upwards in a grin. “Just planning ways to kill that Sadist,” she answered. Tsukuyo nodded. “I see.” Without wasting too much more time, Kagura bounded off towards Shinpachi and Otae, while Tsukuyo trained a worried glance in her direction. Her eyes didn’t smile at me like they usually do.
Sougo watched lazily as Hijikata addressed the other members of the Shinsengumi. He breathed out a deep sigh, tempted to pull his eye-mask down onto his face to take a quick nap. However, he knew that Hijikata would kill him if he even moved to do it, so he decided that he would be a good boy for once and just sit still. Sougo only vaguely listened to the words coming out of the older man’s mouth and could somewhat gather that Hijikata’s actions were fuelled by Mitsuba’s death. “We’ll honour Mitsuba’s wishes and end this fighting! As soon as the Yorozuya are out of the picture...” or something along those lines, Sougo thought to himself.
In Hijikata’s eyes, Mitsuba’s wish for the fighting between the two gangs to stop could be granted if one of the two gangs was chased off the streets for good. That was Hijikata’s reason for calling such a high-stakes street war between the two gangs. That idiot thinks that taking out the Yorozuya is the way to go, huh? Sougo sighed. He, at least, had enough sense in him to realise that what his sister wanted was not this. He thought back to the day when his sister met with Kagura and how she had expressed a hope that the two gangs would be able to get along. There isn’t much hope of that happening now, sis’.
Sougo’s train of thought halted as his sister’s words made their way into his mind. “Then, if you two get married, will the two groups end up merging together?” He blinked at the memory and quickly shook his head, startling Saitou as well as a small number of Shinsengumi members who were sitting beside him. Gently, he massaged the crease between his eyebrows and as he sighed in frustration at his own brain. There isn’t much hope of that happening, either.
It was a couple of minutes after midnight when the Yorozuya members showed up in the back alleys of Tokyo to start their final street brawl against the Shinsengumi. When the ragtag gang eventually arrived, they found that the members of the Shinsengumi had already showed up long before to set-up shop on the fighting grounds. The men were spaced out behind garbage cans and parked motorcycles. Some crouched in groups out in the open while others lurked in the shadows of the alleyways, their dark outfits making it a little difficult to pick out the gang members from their surroundings.
Gintoki led his gang confidently into the middle of the group of Shinsengumi, his head conked to the side as he gazed lazily at Hijikata. “Even in the bitter end, you still don’t show up on time?” Hijikata mocked, a smoke in hand. “Well,” Gintoki drawled, a little upset that his headache had not quite subsided. “I did say that it’d be at the ‘same time, same place’, and this is the same time I usually show up. Have you never heard of being fashionably late?” “Hmph, don’t play smart with me.” His hand clenched around the baseball bat that he was holding, prompting Gintoki to shift into fighting position with is iron pipe.
“Kondo-san’s pulled some strings tonight with the cops,” Hijikata continued. “I hate to ask him, but we can at least be assured that we won’t be interrupted tonight.” “Oh my,” Gintoki exclaimed with mock disbelief. “The stiff Hijikata-san is playing dirty with the police? That can’t be good for your track record.” “Well, it’s fine to loosen up every so often,” explained Hijikata, allowing his cigarette to drop to the ground. “Like right now!”
Without further warning, Hijikata leapt towards Gintoki with his baseball bat raised high in the air. At his movement, both gangs sped into action. There was very little confusion as the members of each respective gang quickly met in combat with a member of the opposing gang. As the clash of weapons and fists echoed throughout the moonlit streets, Gintoki pushed back against his foe. With practised grace, both the ‘Kings of Tokyo’ leapt over their fallen comrades as they engaged in close-combat, aware that the initial casualties would be high due to the large number of the weaker members of each gang being weeded out.
A couple of metres away from the brawl between Gintoki and Hijikata, Kagura’s attention was focused on the ‘mob’ members of the Shinsengumi. As she obliterated them without a second thought, a chill ran up her spine and she quickly stabbed behind her with her reinforced umbrella. Sougo moved quickly to dodge, using one of his fallen gang members as a spring board. “Christ, China,” he called out with a weary façade. “Slow down, would you? We only have so many members for you to beat down.” “Hmph, are all you Shinsengumi weaklings?” she huffed, glaring at her rival. “I’ve hardly broken a sweat.” Sougo smirked. “Why don’t we change that, then?” Kagura blinked as Sougo rushed in.
While she would have, once, been able to fend off such an upfront attack, Kagura’s whirling emotions dulled her fighting prowess. The closer Sougo’s face got to hers, the less Kagura was able to think rationally. She recoiled as she took more and more hits from her rival, unable to fight back against the young Shinsengumi’s unrelenting attacks. Sougo, on the other hand, was thoroughly confused by the way their fight was progressing. Eight, nine, ten. Ten hits? And she’s hit me – what – once? Usually, their fights were more balanced than this. Feeling a little frustrated, he landed a solid kick to Kagura’s abdomen which knocked her a couple of metres away. “Oi, I hardly think that today is the day to be going soft on me,” he advised, approaching her as he twirled his iron pipe.
Groaning, Kagura slowly stood up. She was definitely a wreck, much more so than Sougo who barely had a speck of dust on his jacket. “Who said I’m going soft?!” she yelled, rolling up her sleeves. Sougo scoffed. “No-one needs to say anything. You’re a loser, sure, but you don’t usually lose this badly.” Kagura dropped her head at his words, her eyebrows knitting together in frustration. In a moment of carelessness, a member of the Shinsengumi gang silently crept up behind her and rounded on Kagura with their wooden board. Sougo’s eyes widened. “Oi-!” However, before his call could make its way to Kagura’s ears, she caught a good hold on the assailant’s weapon and lifted her head toward her rival. A strange look of determination crossed her previously downcast eyes. With as much strength as she could muster, Kagura hurled the Shinsengumi member that had attacked her over her shoulder in Sougo’s direction.
Flinching at the unexpected attack, Sougo was driven back by the force of Kagura’s throw and the weight of the man that had just been thrown at him. In the time that it took him to stand up and push the man’s weight off, Kagura had crossed the few metres separating them and hurled a straight punch into his abdomen. Having been winded by his impact with the ground, Sougo left plenty of openings for the refuelled Kagura, who had abandoned her umbrella in favour of a close-quarters brawl instead. She alternated her punches with kicks, the majority – of which – hit straight on their mark.
However, in the midst of her barrage of attacks, Kagura missed the look of ecstatic glee that flickered on Sougo’s face.
Eventually, the tussle took to the ground as both parties tried to get the upper hand on the other. It was when they had tumbled into an empty alleyway that Sougo was able to pin Kagura’s limbs beneath him. However, in doing so, his own appendages were locked in place. A little unsure as to how to proceed, Sougo could only take the time to catch his breath. If I let go to try to knock her out, I leave her with a free arm. Then, the question is who is faster-?
“Oi, Sadist.” Sougo looked down, startled by the suddenness of Kagura’s words. Slowly, he felt the tension in Kagura’s arms dissipate as she allowed her muscles to relax, her eyes staring straight up at Sougo’s face. “When this fight ends, regardless of who wins or loses, what happens?” she questioned, her voice strangely quiet. He blinked. It was too dark in the alleyway to see Kagura’s expression, so he had no idea of what she was thinking. His mind raced for an answer as a bead of sweat began to trickle down his forehead. What is she trying to say…? “Hey,” Kagura called out once more, her voice bouncing off the enclosed walls of the alley way. “What?” responded Sougo, his voice coming out a little harsher than he had intended.
“Without whatever the hell this is, what exactly am I to you?”
Sougo blinked. Seeing no need to maintain their current position as Kagura had already stopped struggling, he released her and sat back slowly onto his heels. In a crouched position, he rested on the balls of his feet as he watched Kagura sit up slowly. “The only reason we even look at each other is ‘coz of these squabbles,” she mumbled. “We aren’t friends, or anything gross like that. When all this ends, there’s nothing left between us, y’know?” “”Nothing left”…?” he repeated quietly. Kagura looked up at him. “So, what am I to you?”
Without moving too much, Sougo glanced off to the side and asked as appropriate a question as he could think of. “Why do you want to know?” he murmured, partly at her and partly for his own sake. Kagura remained silent, the back of her neck sweating as she chose her next words. “Because I want to crush you?” she managed to squeak. Sougo raised an unconvinced eyebrow. “Do you mean you have a crush on me?” he spoke slowly, leaning in close. Kagura blushed. Now that his eyes had adjusted to the darkness, he could clearly see the red sheen darken Kagura’s cheeks. There was no question about it. He smirked and sorely hoped that she would not notice the heat on his cheeks, either.
“Well, if you must know…” Sougo said through his sly smile. He aimed a kick at her side, which was neatly dodged by Kagura who pushed off the ground into a somersault. “For a piggy, I think you’re pretty cute.” Sougo was not sure of whether or not Kagura had completely registered his words when she aimed a fly kick at his shoulder, knocking him out of the alleyway. The angered and embarrassed look on her face, however, told him that she had at least heard the ‘piggy’ part.
Grabbing her umbrella as she ran out of the alleyway, Kagura made to strike down upon her ‘hated’ rival with her favourite weapon. Sougo jumped up to dodge the incoming umbrella, which he was sure weighed more than a couple of kilograms. He landed in front of Kagura and aimed a punch at her face. Taken by surprise, Kagura did not have the time to dodge and only managed to block his incoming attack with her arm. The crack that she heard echoed loudly and she quickly roundhouse kicked him in the shin in vengeance. The resounding crack from his leg satisfied her as she leapt backwards in a wary fashion. “Both you damn siblings…!” he swore as he lowered his stance to place some stress off his leg. “My stupid broken arm just healed, China!”
From the way that he was favouring his right leg, Kagura could tell that Sougo would not be getting much use out of it for the rest of the night. She tested her left arm and found its movement stiff. Same could be said for me. From the corner of his eye, Sougo noticed her dilemma. “Don’t tell me we’re both out of commission for tonight,” he hissed, placing his arms up in a guarded postion. She turned angrily to point at him with her umbrella using her good arm. “Well, it certainly is not my fault!” she yelled. “You broke my arm first – you got what you deserved!” She lowered herself into a fighting stance, twirling her umbrella threateningly. “And I only need one arm to beat the stuffing out of you, anyway.” He scoffed. “Hardly.”
Quickly, Sougo scanned the streets. While the Shinsengumi far outnumbered the Yorozuya, Gintoki’s gang members were all well-seasoned fighters. Even with lower fewer members, they had managed to dwindle the numbers of the Shinsengumi. After a half an hour into the fight, it seemed that the majority of each gang had been taken out. On the Shinsengumi’s side, only Kondo, Sougo and Hijikata remained standing. The Yorozuya only had three members remaining, as well – they were Gintoki and his two children. As far as Sougo was concerned, the match between himself and Kagura could only end in a tie. That meant that whether or not the Shinsengumi would win would be decided by whether or not Kondo and Hijikata could push Kamui and Gintoki to the ground.
Having been ganged up on by a large number of the Shinsengumi beforehand, Kamui had been tired out and was having a bit of trouble fighting back against Kondo. His fists did not carry the same impact that they once had and the older Shinsengumi member was quite well-equipped to fend off Kamui’s offences. Kagura, having noticed this fact, eyed Sougo warily before sprinting towards her brother. Sougo’s eyes widened with the startling realisation that Kagura had disappeared and, with his limp, he was unable to catch up to her as she flew over to Kamui’s aid. Moving swiftly, Kagura made use of her athleticism and used her good arm as a brace on the ground to support her weight. She lifted her legs and made quick work of kicking away Kondo’s fire-extinguisher. Kondo’s surprise allowed ample time for Kamui to knock the larger man out with a swift, hard kick to the temple.
“Kondo-san!” called out Hijikata as his friend went down. With Hijikata’s loss of attention, Gintoki took the opportunity to wrestle the Shinsengumi leader’s baseball bat from his hands, tossing it to Kamui. After he had successfully removed Hijikata’s weapon, Gintoki struggled against his rival in close combat, eventually managing to lock Hjikata’s arms behind his back. “Two against three,” Gintoki announced, glancing at Sougo as his two children ran to his side. “You’re weapon-less and the boy over there isn’t faring too well, either. There’s no need to continue on with the pointless fighting.”
Sougo silently agreed with Gintoki. He glanced over at Kagura to check on her condition, only to find her giving him a nervous stare. When his eyes met with hers, she quickly ducked behind her brother. He raised an eyebrow as she furiously turned her head away from him. Feeling embarrassed already are we, China? However, he was brought out of his musings by Hijikata’s voice. “Hmph, I’d rather go down fighting,” the man declared as he began to struggle once more at Gintoki’s grip. However, the Yorozuya leader would not relinquish his hold. He used his leg to slide under Hijikata’s feet and pushed him to the ground, laying his foot carefully on the fallen man’s back.
After ensuring that he had locked Hijikata in place, Gintoki wrapped his arms around Kagura and Kamui, pulling them so that they both stood at his sides. “Listen, I don’t mind fighting. Trust me. However,” he gently pat Kagura’s cheek, which had begun to bruise. “Big, gigantic fights like this with actual stakes? No fun.” Hijikata stiffened. “The stakes were in place to get one of us off the streets, to stop this fighting in a satisfactory manner,” he rationalised. “Like Mitsuba would’ve wanted.” Sougo turned his head. “My sister wanted the fighting to stop, Hijibaka,” he deadpanned. “Trying to stop the fighting by using more fighting isn’t exactly gonna work.” Hijikata looked lost. “But… Fighting is the only thing that guys like us have ever known. How exactly are we meant to settle things without duking it out?”
Sougo thought back once more to his sister’s words. “Well, I suppose I could always marry China and merge our gangs that way-“ In half a second, Sougo was cut off by an iron pipe flying at his face. He narrowly managed to dodge it, his hands risen in surrender. “What. Did. You. Say?” Gintoki growled, clutching the very red Kagura to his chest. “I don’t think I quite caught that.” In response, Sougo acted out his best impression of a pure, innocent child while Kamui watched in amusement. “I wonder how monstrously strong your babies will be!” pondered the older Sakata sibling. “Oi.” “Yes, dad?” Kamui answered amiably. “Your sister isn’t marrying anyone until she’s thirty and especially not that Sadist King, okay?”
Hijikata glanced at the four, a little taken aback at how easily they managed to banter with one another. He looked at his shoes. “Merging, huh?” he murmured. Sougo looked back at Hijikata. “Well, both of our groups are pretty much doing the exact same type of thing, anyways,” he stated. “Merging wouldn’t be too hard. In the first place, I don’t think the Yorozuya boss’ group are as blood thirsty as the guys in our group, so we can expect very little protest on their end.” As he continued, Sougo’s eyes began to soften. “And, well, if they hear that it’s what sis’ would have wanted, I’m sure that our guys will be up for it, too.”
As Gintoki released Kagura, she turned in her father’s arms to face Hijikata. “Our boss is usually the stupid one, so I was surprised to find out that this whole ‘final gang fight’ was your idea,” she bluntly announced. At her words, Hijikata furrowed his brow and looked at the younger girl. “I only had to meet her once to recognise that she was as good a person as they come,” she continued, turning her head upwards towards the moon. “Even if she hated fighting, she understood that there was very little malice behind our usual gang rough ups.” She paused to look back at Hijikata who had turned back down to look at the ground. “I’m sure that, if she had to choose between our usual tussles and what happened tonight,” Kagura gestured to the bruised bodies lying unconscious across the street, “she would much rather our usual fights.”
Sougo whistled. “I guess even the idiot China can be smart sometimes.” Kagura glared at him. “Why couldn’t he have inherited some of his sister’s gentle and kind personality…?” she wondered aloud, bringing a hand up to massage between her eyebrows. Hijikata chuckled, tousling Sougo’s hair in the process. “Sometimes I wonder that, too,” Hijikata agreed. His young ward made a face that was not befitting of an eighteen-year-old and shook Hijikata’s hand away. Gintoki smiled at the scene. “Well, that’s it for tonight,” he declared. “Gather up the bodies and bandage them up. When you’re ready, contact me and we can talk about that gang merge. Which would you prefer – the ‘Yorogumi’ or the ‘Shinsenzuya’?”
Hijikata cocked his head and gave a defeated sigh. “Guess there’s no choice, huh?” he muttered. Gintoki turned, his kids having already run off to help the injured. Sougo stalked off to do the same for the Shinsengumi, shaking Saitou awake to give him a hand. However, before Hijikata could walk away, Gintoki spoke once more. “Oh, one thing.” “Hm?” “Can you, like, call or text me like a normal person? Letters are so twentieth century.”

And--! That’s the end.
I’m just joking – goodness no! I’ve still got an epilogue coming after this one. So, if you’re not yet satisfied, please hold on!
