Her whole life, Katie had heard stories about the Winchester boys. It started with tales about John Winchester, “and those boys of his.” Shortly after, those same stories turned into tall tales about the Winchesters’ latest great victory. Unbelievable stuff. Dragons. Demons. Fairies. Gods.

Katie’s Uncle Lou would come up to the house with a case he needed help with. He and Katie’s dad would talk a long time, and at the end of many of those talks Dad would say, “This is too weird for us. Leave it to the Winchesters.”

When she turned eighteen and was ready to go on her first solo hunt, Uncle Lou sat Katie down for a talk. If she ever found a case too weird, he instructed her to call him, and he’d call his pal Garth to tell the Winchesters to drop by.

Katie wished she’d listened to Uncle Lou.

She and her partner Leslie slammed their backs against the storeroom door. The thumps on the other side shook the whole doorframe.

“It’s only a shapeshifter,” Leslie sassed, repeating Katie’s words back to her. “It’ll be easy. We’ll be home for dinner.”

“So it’s a shapeshifter family,” Katie grunted as another body rattled the door. “We can still take them.”

“Are you kidding me?” Leslie yelled. “The whole farm is infested. If we make it out of this, I’m going to kill you.”

“I told you we should have left it to the Winchesters,” Katie ground out.

Leslie’s long blonde hair hid her face. “I’m sorry, okay? Next time you can do the research.”

At that moment a bang like a gunshot rang out. Katie instinctively ducked. The doors stopped shuddering under the shapeshifter onslaught. Another bang, and another, accompanied a scream. Then silence.

Katie and Leslie traded a wide-eyed stare.

Someone knocked on the door. Leslie screamed.

“Hey, take it easy,” a male voice said on the other side of the door. “The shapeshifters are dead. You can come out.”

Katie reached for the door handle. Leslie whimpered. Katie cracked the door open. A huge dude stood on the other side with a shotgun in his hands.

Katie raised her machete. “Prove you’re not a monster.”

The guy lowered his gun and pulled a knife from his belt. Katie hefted the machete.

“Easy. It’s silver,” the dude said. He dragged the knife across the skin of his wrist. Blood welled up, but no sizzling smoke.

Katie relaxed slightly. “Who are you?”

“My name is Sam; this is my brother Dean.” Another big dude with shorter hair lumbered out of the dark. He surveyed the area with his shotgun at the ready. Katie recognised the set to his jaw and the position of his shoulders. Her dad hunted like that.

“You’re hunters?”

Leslie crashed into Katie’s side. “Holy crap,” she gasped. “You’re the Winchesters.”

Sam looked startled. Dean swiveled their way, eyeing Leslie with suspicion.

“Yeah, we are,” Sam said.

“You’ve heard of us?” Dean asked.

“I kind of thought you were a myth,” Katie said.

Dean snorted, but a smirk crawled up his face. “Let’s go. We got the rest of the shapeshifters. You did good, all things considered.”

“Except the part where we almost died,” Leslie said.

Hunter wakes were the worst.

Katie wished she was old enough to down the bottle of whiskey on the coffee table in front of her. She didn’t even know the poor dead shmuck. But her dad did, and he insisted Katie should come along to pay her respects.

“Leslie didn’t have to come,” Katie grumbled to herself. She slouched further into the old couch, wanting to sink into the floor.

Everybody clustered around the living room had at least twenty years on her. Nobody wanted to talk to the kid. She didn’t have any stories about Tyler to share. She didn’t have any tears to shed, or laughs to offer. She might as well become the lamp in the corner for all the attention anybody paid her.

A couple of dudes in flannel sat on the other couch opposite Katie. She had tuned out their conversation ages ago. But her ears pricked at a familiar name.

“The Winchesters took out an alpha vampire.”

“You’re taking the piss.”

“No, I’m serious. They got that angel buddy helping them.”

“Dude, I thought the angels hated us.”

“This one’s palling with the Winchesters, I swear.”

“Those boys get weirder every day.”

Katie strained her ears while trying to keep her expression blank. But that moment, a fork clinked against a glass. The conversations died.

Katie turned in her seat. Her Uncle Lou stood with a glass upraised in his hand.

“Friends, hunters,” he started. “We are all here today to honour our fallen brother.”

Katie wasn’t listening anymore. Two men had just walked through the front door. The taller stood with his jaw clenched and his brow furrowed as he listened to Uncle Lou’s toast. The other one shuffled his feet and stuffed his hands in his green army jacket.

Sam and Dean Winchester.

Katie fidgeted until the toasts ended. Then she bolted off the couch. She tried to pretend nonchalance as she sidled up to the brothers. They were talking with Uncle Lou’s friend Garth.

“Dude, anytime you want to lose the babysitting gig and hunt with us again, we’ll be there,” Dean said.

Sam caught Katie’s eye first. Recognition sparked across his face. He nudged Dean. “Hey,” Sam said. “You’re that kid from the shapeshifter hunt. Kat?” “Katie,” she corrected him. “How did you know Tyler?” Dean chuckled. “The old coot used to hunt with our dad. We’d see him a couple times a year as kids.”

“Do you actually have an angel friend?” Katie blurted out. She clapped a hand over her mouth in horror.

Dean frowned, but Sam huffed a laugh. “Yeah, I guess.”

“That’s so cool,” Katie squeaked. “I have to go.” Go drown herself in the rain barrel, Katie thought as she turned tail and ran. If she ever met the Winchesters again, she just might die of shame.

Katie scrolled mindlessly through tv channels on the motel room box when a familiar face caught her eye.

“No way.” She flipped back. Katie’s mouth dropped open. Sam Winchester’s face plastered a wanted ad on the late-night news. The image flipped to his brother Dean, looking angrier than Katie remembered him. She turned up the volume.

“-shooting up a diner on the edge of town,” the news anchor reported. “These brothers are reported to be armed and dangerous. The public is being warned not to engage and to call authorities immediately.”

The motel room door opened. Leslie bustled in with her arms full of groceries.

“Look,” Katie pointed at the tv screen. “The Winchesters are on tv!”

Leslie quirked an eyebrow. “For real? What did they do, kill the President?”

“Where are the Winchesters?” The vampire hissed.

Katie’s head spun. Her heart beat slow and sluggish against her ribs. Blood flowed from her wrist over the arm of the chair, staining the ropes tying her down.

“I told you, I don’t know them,” Katie slurred. After three days, she could hardly keep track of the endless questions. She hadn’t seen Leslie since the vampires first jumped them in the barn. Now, in the farmhouse kitchen, Katie didn’t dare think what might have happened to her friend.

“All hunters know the Winchesters,” the blonde vampire snarled. Her needle teeth made it hard for Katie to focus on her words.

“I know who they are,” Katie nodded. She wished she hadn’t. Sparks popped at the edge of her vision. “But I don’t know them. I don’t know where they are.”

“Try right here,” a new voice broke into the conversation from behind Katie’s back. She heard the vamp scream. Something sliced through the air and then two dull thuds hit the ground.

Dean Winchester came into Katie’s field of vision. His green army jacket was flecked with blood.

“You okay, kid?” Dean knelt and untied Katie’s hands.

Katie couldn’t speak. Her throat clogged with tears.

“Hey, I know you,” Dean said. “You’re that Kansas kid from the funeral. Katie, right?”

“Did you find Leslie?” Katie finally forced out. “Is she okay?”

“She’s good,” Dean assured her. He helped her to her feet. Katie swayed. “Hey,” Dean caught her shoulder. “Okay, lean on me. Let’s go find your friend.”

Katie didn’t remember the walk out of the house and into the driveway. But she recalled Leslie slamming into her and wrapping her in a hug. Katie sagged against Leslie. Over Leslie’s shoulder, Katie smiled her thanks to Dean.

Katie didn’t hang out in bars. Especially hunter bars. But she and Leslie needed intel from one of her dad’s hunter pals. He insisted on meeting them at the Old Horse bar off the highway. Stepping through the front door with Leslie, Katie inhaled the stench of depression and stale sweat.

Corky, the old hunter, sat on a stool at the bar. The visor of his old ball cap had ragged edges like his dog had chewed on it.

Katie and Leslie slid onto barstools next to him. Corky lifted red rimmed eyes.

“You’re Hank’s kid?”

“Yessir,” Katie nodded.

Corky’s eyes travelled up and down Leslie. She shifted uncomfortably. The barstool squeaked.

“Dad said you had a weird case,” Katie prompted. “Something better left to the Winchesters.”

Corky scowled. “Them boys are nothing but trouble. You ever see them, run. They tend to leave folks for dead.”

Leslie shot Katie a frown.

“They’ve saved our lives,” Katie said.

Corky snorted. “Sure. And now you’re in their debt. When they need cannon fodder, they’ll call you.”

Katie regretted the drive to talk to Corky. “Do you have a case or not?”

Corky reached into his coat and pulled out a stack of papers. He thumped them down on the sticky bar. “All yours. Couple kids missing all their organs. Hearts, kidneys, livers, the works. I don’t know nothing that harvests all that without taking a bite.”

“How do you mean?” Leslie flipped through the pages.

Corky shrugged. “All the guts were removed surgically. Clean cuts, no fangs, no claws.”

“Weird,” Leslie muttered.

Katie stood. “Thanks for your time.”

Corky swivelled in his seat to watch Katie and Leslie go. “Remember what I said,” he called after them. “Don’t trust those Winchesters.”

Katie saw them first. Sam and Dean Winchester hanging by their wrists from the rafters of an old warehouse. Another unknown man swung next to them. Their boots had drifted lazy patterns through the dust on the floor. A rudimentary system of hoses pierced the crook of their elbows, draining red into bags hanging on crude stands next to them.

Katie’s mind raced through a short list of possible monster culprits. Ghouls, vampires, leviathan…

“Djinn!” Leslie yelled. “Get down!”

Katie ducked. Leslie’s shotgun blasted through the space where Katie’s head had been.

An inhuman screech raised all the hairs on the back of Katie’s neck.

Katie popped up and aimed her gun. Head shot or nothing, she told herself. The longer this fight lasted, the more opportunities the djinn had to ensnare them. Katie got a bead on the djinn’s flaming eyes. She pulled the trigger.

The gun jammed.

Katie cursed. The djinn’s grin glowed under its flaming blue eyes. It moved low and fast. Katie braced herself.

The shotgun blast nearly deafened Katie. Her ears rang. The djinn slumped to the ground.

Leslie dropped her shotgun. The clattering sound was twice as concussive in the silence after the kill shot. Leslie stared down at the body. It looked like a normal middle-aged man without its glowing tattoos. Leslie shook all over.

Katie took her shaking hand and led her over to the three men strung up from the ceiling. Leslie visibly swallowed her nerves. She got to work helping an unconscious Sam.

Katie approached the unknown man at the far end. She pressed a hand to his neck, searching for a pulse. His skin was cold. He was gone. Katie bolted down the rush of emotions. She had to cut him down. He deserved that much.

Katie found a box in the corner of the warehouse to clamber on top of. She withdrew her knife and sawed through the ropes binding his wrists. She eased him down and laid him out. The ropes unwound from reddened wrists gone pale in death. Katie crossed his arms over his chest. It was the best she could do.

Katie got up and shoved the box over to Dean’s side.

Leslie already had Sam down on the ground. She brushed his hair out of his face and tapped his cheek, trying to rouse him.

Katie focussed on the ropes around Dean’s wrists. Her knife severed them easily enough. Dean’s weight slumped against Katie. She stifled a groan. How the hell had Leslie lifted Sam? He had to weigh tonnes more than Dean.

She got Dean on the ground without doing him any serious injury. His head lolled against the concrete. Katie removed the needle in his arm. She tossed the foul thing as far as possible. Now what? She didn’t know how to wake people from djinn dreams. Katie looked over at Leslie helplessly. Leslie reflected the same confusion back.

She gestured to Sam. “He won’t wake up.”

Dean suddenly gasped. Leslie screamed. Dean sat up so fast he nearly headbutted Katie.

“Hey,” Katie held up her hands. “Easy. You’re okay.”

Dean’s wild eyes took in the warehouse and Katie and Leslie. His gaze landed on Sam. His whole demeanor changed. Dean went from coiled to attack to springing into defense. He dove to Sam’s side and repeated Leslie’s gentle taps to the face. It didn’t help.

“Dean,” Katie said. “We tried that. He won’t wake up.”

“Where’s the djinn?” Dean asked without looking up from his brother.

“Dead,” Leslie spat.

Dean nodded. “Good.” He wiped a hand over his face and gathered himself. “Okay. He’ll wake up in a minute now that the djinn’s dead. Help me with him.”

Katie and Leslie took Sam’s left side and Dean took the other. Together they lifted Sam and half carried half dragged him out of the warehouse.

“Why did you wake up but not Sam?” Katie asked as they pushed the warehouse door open.

Dean shrugged and nearly lost his grip on Sam. “I don’t know. The dream started breaking down. Maybe I’ve got more of an immunity to the djinn because I’ve been dosed more than Sam has. Or maybe it was just luck.”

“How many djinn have you killed?” Katie asked incredulously.

“I dunno,” Dean thought. “Three. Maybe four.”

Leslie gave Katie a wide-eyed stare. These Winchesters were crazy.

Dean’s car waited in the back alley under a single street light. It was a beautiful machine. Classic and monstrous in its wide grill and sleek body. Katie and Leslie helped Dean prop Sam up in the passenger’s seat. Dean slapped his brother across the face. Sam jerked awake, spitting and swearing.

Dean and Sam helped Katie and Leslie clear their crime scene. Then they got into their car and drove away.

Before that though, Dean offered Katie a handshake. “We owe you one,” he said.

“I think we’re even,” Katie said.

Dean smiled. “You ever need anything, give us a call.” He gave Katie a phone number scribbled on a Gas n’ Sip napkin.

Leslie and Katie watched the Winchesters’ taillights fade into the dark.

“My dad will never believe we saved the Winchesters,” Katie said.

“I can’t believe we got their number!”

Princess, part 4

Back at her section of Doc's HQ. Flicker's personal shower was a customized array of converted waterjet cutters. She set the cycle to 'potential biohazard decontamination' and turned the pressure and temperature all the way up. The high pressure streams helped a little. She used emotional and memory compartmentalization as a coping mechanism, but it was fraying around the edges. She'd been able to achieve temporary detachment from the events at the Box, but other issues were creeping back. Burnout wasn't helping, but it was better than unmanaged anger or frustration, so she'd take it. Could be worse. She dressed after a medibot scan and checked alerts. Doc had listed his debriefing as 'optional' but she went anyway. Might as well get it over with. Doc was in the main control room. A rows of vid screens nearly covered one wall, and Flicker noted that the upper left quadrant was still set to Doc's preferred 'remain even-tempered while on a voice call with someone obnoxious' mix--science news feeds and a set of difficult-to-decipher regional heatmaps. She sat down in one of the observer chairs and Doc turned to face her. "I should have slowed down after he stopped struggling," she said. "Getting to the Box fast didn't matter." "Hindsight," said Doc. "And it's not clear going slower for a longer time would have been less painful for Hermes--he was getting dragged by the leg at hypersonic velocities regardless. You did everything reasonably possible. You stopped the rampage. He's gone and unlikely to voluntarily return any time soon--his mystique is shattered. Remember, it took us over a month to catch him the first time." "However." Doc tented his hands, his face concerned. "You still aren't managing your pacing. If you made a mistake today, it was to go on patrol at all--you were only marginally at yellow when the alert hit. I had a discussion with the Database integrity AI. Some of your telemetry on the return trip was very disturbing. And the EMT at the Box reported that you showed signs of combat stress reaction--thousand-yard stare and complete lack of facial expression." "Fine," said Flicker. "I'll skip patrol tomorrow." "I think you should take a longer break. Your stress is--" "Journeyman is more than two hours overdue for his scheduled check-in. I'm not going on vacation when my partner is potentially in trouble." "I'm not suggesting that," said Doc. "You can stay on-call for his backup without handling response for anything else. And he did request a 24-hour buffer before we take any action when he isn't on Earth." "... Yeah, he did." Now I have nothing pressing to do except worry about my partner. Great. Doc was still studying her. "There were some patterns in the probability manipulation flux levels I measured that bother me. Hermes' summoning may have been used as a mask for something. I'm going to be gathering and analyzing more data. If you wish, you could assist in some tests. They should be stress-free." "Okay. I can try that." ***** Flicker had her own place, but its suitability as a permanent home was still largely theoretical. The location had been a rail maintenance shop in a long inactive part of the Iron Range, where she'd been able to secure several important concessions regarding allowable levels of noise and plasma in return for cleaning it up without allowing any contamination to get into the groundwater. It had a full Database backup node, up and running smoothly--sub-microsecond latency was part of Flicker's minimum requirement for 'home'--but everything else was progressing more slowly. It was more than a cot in a workshop next to a giant underground server room, as one of Doc's sysadmins had joked, but not a lot more. It was, however, far enough from Doc's HQ to run some esoteric causal isolation tests for probability manipulation--and rule out certain forms of influence that were otherwise difficult to detect. Flicker was quite willing. Glancing at her Machiavelli study context after the weight of the day's events sank in had turned her stomach. The tests were emotionally neutral--better than anything else available. She sat at her high speed interface keyboard, watching several graphs and responding to a verification program controlled by a random number generator. It let her go away for a while. Update, sent the Database, after a long time. Flicker sped up. Yes? Journeyman has checked in. Message for you: "Back. Will call when home." Something positive to focus on. Finally. Location. Running updates. Check in at Antarctic secure drop. Current location undefined. Flicker slowed down slightly to wait on the updates and felt her emotional reaction start to kick in. Bangkok... Undefined... Tabriz... Undefined... Amsterdam... Undefined... Las Vegas... Undefined... He was skip-porting, staying just long enough to send a blip from his phone then porting again. Was he worried about pursuit? Rural Kansas. She waited. The location didn't change. What is he doing in Kansas? Buying groceries. Okay. Estimate probability he'll be there for at least ten more seconds. 98%+. However, there is a 94%+ chance he will be at his home within five minutes. Groceries implied at least a short stay. Flicker got up from the keyboard and made sure her travel pack had a fresh change of clothes--it had been a while since she'd used it. 'Off-duty' was not a state of mind that came naturally anymore.

Flicker was waiting on Journeyman's doorstep when he ported in. He was in an outfit she'd seen before; a stylized armored vest over archaic-looking clothes. His shapeshifting hat was wide-brimmed and black. He looked like the handsome villain from a poster for a historical drama with skilled costumers but no concern for accuracy. "Hey," she said, then held out her hand, fingers spread. "Yellow." Not great, but able to handle immediate priorities. "Hey." He touched his fingertips to hers in their personal substitute for a high five. "I'm at yellow, too," he said. "What's up?" He waved his hand. "Paranoia, probably. But, you know..." He took a breath. "We can talk inside." He scowled at the multiple locks on his front door. Flicker knew there were invisible wards on it as well. "Can you just port us both?" she asked. "I got into this mess because I was overconfident at the wrong time," he said. He put down the grocery bags, stuck out both arms, and moved them slowly upwards in a smooth arc. Faint green fire trailed from his fingertips. "Sorry for the wait, but I'm not going to get sloppy at the end." After finishing with the wards, he pulled out a set of keys to unlock the physical locks. "I'd like to close this properly after we're inside. You willing to leave it unvaporized if something comes up?" he asked. "Do you still have a replacement emergency exit window handy?" "Yep." "Then yeah," she said. "I'll use that if I have to go in a hurry." Journeyman heaved a sigh after they entered and he closed the door. "Now we can--" Something chirped, interrupting him. "Great." Flicker sped up and checked her sensors. There was no sign of anyone or anything else living or recently mobile inside. The chirp had sounded similar to a low battery alert from a smoke alarm, but had come from midair. Whatever was amiss, it wasn't anything she recognized. She turned to Journeyman and slowed down again. "No obvious intruders," she said. "What alarm is that?" "Higher than expected magic level." He waved a hand to silence the alarm, then pulled out his glasses from a vest pocket and put them on. He used them for detail work and distinguishing subtle magic. He looked around the room before turning to Flicker and doing a double take. "False alarm," he said. "But you certainly have a fine magical glow about you this evening." "Should I worry?" "Depends on how you got that way." He paused to put the bags of groceries on the kitchen counter, then he took off his hat and tossed it onto the hat stand, where it transformed into a flat cap. He looked back at her with a raised eyebrow. "Did you, like, beat up a demigod and take his lunch money or something?" "Does Hermes count?" Both eyebrows up. "...for this purpose, yes. Would that be why you're at yellow?" "I was already at yellow from my shift when he showed. But my day improved when you ported in alive." A short laugh. "Mine too. You up for telling me what happened? Is he, ah..." "I didn't kill him. And he got away, off Earth, because..." Flicker shut her eyes to try to organize what she wanted to say. "Can I show you the feed from my visor cam? That's easier than just talking. I'm pretty burned out. Doc strongly suggested I take time off. But are you expecting an attack? I got really worried after you missed your check in." "Not a direct one. Not anymore. Certainly not with you here." He pulled off his vest and dropped it on a chair, revealing blotches of sweat on the shirt underneath. "The magician part of the 'Byzantine interdimensional magician mess' should be over. But I've been reliving an old style, an old set of habits, as cover, and I'm not all the way back yet, so--" Flicker frowned at a cut in the outer fabric of the back of the vest. "That looks like someone stabbed you in the back." "Yep. That was a while ago. I left the cut to discourage anyone else from trying, then forgot about it." "You forgot about being backstabbed?" "Eh. He was okay, he was just testing me. I finessed it. He laughed when his sword broke because I warp cut it, then I asked if he was done yet. Wasn't even in the top ten most stressful things that happened that day. Not incidentally, I could use some time off, too. But you had a bad day involving magic, and I wasn't here to back you up, which I regret. So tell me, or show me, whatever you want. We can use the TV--it has one of Doc's data scramblers, and I warded it so no one can use the speaker as a mic." "Okay." Flicker set up a playback of highlights from her visor, edited by the Database, then joined Journeyman on the couch. "I had already hit my patrol limit for the day and was reading something kind of depressing when the alert hit..." Flicker described events tersely and spent the vid segments watching Journeyman's reaction. He had red hair, a light complexion with freckles, and a very expressive face. Unfortunately, Flicker wasn't very good at reading faces. He looked intent and slightly alarmed--which was his default with anything important. His eyes widened slightly at her exchange with Hermes in the Tyrrhenian, and he spent the replay of the transfer at the Box with his hands clasped in front of his mouth. "...and after I decontaminated, Doc was really insistent I stay off duty for a while," Flicker concluded, after the replay segments finished. "But you were overdue, so I killed time running some tests until you ported in." Journeyman met her eyes. "Whoof. Lots of things I could say. Most aren't urgent, since he lived and you didn't spill any blood. Anything you wanted to ask me about first?" "Well, Doc said Hermes' escape wasn't a big problem. I'm not so sure. What do you think?" "Heh." Journeyman shook his head. "He didn't escape. He got boomeranged when his summoner died--I'm actually more concerned about how that happened, because the whole thing sounds fishy. I'll have to see if I can find out who the summoner was. And I really don't think Hermes is going to be eager to come back to Earth again, which will make him rather more difficult to summon, even if someone wanted to." "Why not?" "Because you live here." Journeyman waved a hand. "You delivered one of the most thorough pseudo-mythological curb-stompings I've ever seen, followed by a disturbingly effective bit of operant conditioning. And that 'fire is hot' bit where you changed your voice? That--" "My voice changed? I was just trying to speak clearly when I was tired and out of patience." "Yeah, well, you didn't sound like a superhero. You sounded like an angry goddess. To me, and to Hermes. You saw his eyes." Flicker looked away. "You know how I feel about being called a goddess." "I do. But if the shoe fits... And I'll need to check on a few things. You're likely to get a lot of weird or disturbing messages. For sure when whatever vid the Box recorded leaks. But that's not urgent." Flicker sighed. "I get plenty of weird emails already. Enough for my Database bots to do robust statistics on small fraction subgroups. I look at the results sometimes when I'm having trouble getting to sleep." "Then rejoice, for your somnolence-aiding samples will surely grow." Flicker snorted a laugh. "Thanks. He stood and shut off the TV, then walked over to the bookshelves. After standing silently for a while he turned back around. "You said you were reading something unpleasant when the alert hit. What was it?" "A heavily annotated translation of Machiavelli's The Prince. I've started trying to learn about politics." "Oh. Yeah, that would... Damn it. Okay. You asked a question. I have a theory about the answer. I owe you an explanation, but it's going to lead somewhere pretty dark, and I'm not sure you're up for it right now. And I have a nasty suspicious mind, and my paranoia dial has been turned to 11 for a while. I could be wrong about any or all of this. I don't know anything. Like whether this is safe. I could even put a ward on someone to make a DNA test on their blood match the DNA of the tech that did the draw, so they don't get outed as a non-human by a drug test. Hypothetically." "Uh..." Journeyman waved a hand. "That said, I think that if your biological body has two parents and if you were conceived by sexual reproduction, then you're right--Doc is probably your father. It's still the simplest explanation." Flicker looked down. "Doc won't assume that. He told me that wherever my body came from could be a lot weirder and still be less unusual than my speed powers." "He has a point. But let's go ahead and assume it for the moment. He's not the problem, is he? Your mother is, because she's definitely not human. You're on pretty firm ground there because of your strength and healing ability. And you aren't happy with what that implies." "No. I'm not." "Sooo... Suppose a demon shows up at Doc's HQ tomorrow and says 'Hi Flicker, I'm your mother', and Doc says 'Could be her', and runs some tests--you know he would--then says 'Yup.' How would you feel?" "I would have many questions." "I'm sure," said Journeyman. "But how would feel? Happy... or angry?" Fury. Flicker sped up. DASI? Is anger a reasonable response? He did not ask for justification. Is anger an accurate description of your projected emotional state? Yeah... She slowed back down. "Angry. Very angry." "More angry than you were at Hermes today?" Flicker took a deep breath. "I... don't know. Maybe. Why did you say 'demon'? You usually--" "Say non-human person or something. Yes. Demon isn't a great word. Emotionally loaded as hell. But it's the one that gets used. It's the one you think, right? So maybe you can understand why she might not want to drop in for pizza and chitchat?" "If she knew, but--" "Now suppose she doesn't stop by, but someone tells you her name. Would you want to go have a little talk with her? Maybe while you're still angry, because of those many questions that haven't been answered yet?" "... Yeah." "So can you see how her name could be used as an attack, against you or her, even though you want to know it? And the correct name might be worse than a lie or mistake?" Another breath. "Yes." "So. Back to your question. I think Hermes was primed with a hint that you were sensitive about your biological parents, either by the summoner or by someone else before he was summoned." Journeyman waggled his hand. "I suspect that the whole thing might have been a premeditated attack aimed at you that didn't quite work, but I'm less sure about that and it's messy to explain. If it was, the probability manipulation Doc picked up on was probably part of it. And it might not be over." "But if Hermes planned to attack me--" "I don't think he did. I don't even think he was the weapon--that would be the summoner. I think Hermes was ammunition. And the planner was someone who had really good intel. A seer at a minimum. You got hit at about the worst possible time, and I don't think that was an accident. But we're getting into wild-eyed paranoia territory now. Both you and Doc are swimming in a sea of probability manipulation, against and for you, because you're both so important to the survival of Earth. So it's hard to sort things out. Anyway. Are you ready for the not safe part?" "Okay..." "You gave him more than one chance to talk. And he didn't try 'I know who your parents are' right away. Not until the last thing he said, right after you went angry goddess. I think he recognized something." "What?" said Flicker. "He'd already seen me." "Your voice changed. I think he heard a resemblance to someone he'd met. And guessed she was your mother." "You really think he could tell just from a bit of voice? Why?" "Because that's what I thought, about someone I've met. At the same spot in the recording." "Do you think it's the same person?" Journeyman looked down. "Important question. Any name occur to you?" Flicker's mind whirled. "No." "Okay. Not sure my guess is right. But I'm a lot more sure that if it is right, she doesn't want you to know who she is. At least not right now." "Who do you think she is?" "Aaand now we start with the dark part. I'm not going to tell you. You'll eventually learn, if I'm right and we all live that long." Journeyman looked back up and met her eyes. "But not from me. I won't be the weapon." Another breath. And a lot of anger that wasn't a projected emotional state. "What was the point of making this so... personal, if you won't tell me?" "You asked the question, and it's a threat exactly because you take it so personally." He looked to the side. "I have another reason. It's more personal for me, and the rest of the dark part. I'll tell you, if you want to hear, but it will take a bit. You up for it?" "Yes." "Okay. But you're stressed and burned out and angry and probably a little buzzed from that hit of magic you picked up, and I'm tired and stressed and hungry, so I'd like to fix dinner first. You want some?" "We can get takeout, you don't have to--" "I cook to de-stress sometimes. That's why I got groceries. And it will give you a bit of a break, too. Are you hungry?" "No... but I probably should be." Journeyman smiled. "Great. Food coming up!" He stood and headed for the kitchen. Flicker felt a sense of emotional whiplash as she watched him. But he hadn't brushed her off or ignored what she wanted... My partner. Helping me remember things I shouldn't forget.

A/N: Demon Dean, you’re something alright...

It’d been nearly a day since you got out of Little Gorge, not sure if Dean was dead, caught, alive or what. All you knew was his note in the backpack said you’d be safe at those coordinates so that’s where you went, in the middle of nowhere Kansas, knocking on a big black door, your blade ready to go just in case.

You saw the door open tentatively, a gun in the person’s hand quickly get hidden behind their back.

“Are you Sam?” you asked, taking in the man’s face, recognizing his eyes the most. “Sam Winchester?”

“Y/N Y/L/N,” said Sam, looking around and then down at you. “You dated Dean in high school.”

“This is nuts but...Dean sent me here. Bad stuff is going down in Little Gorge. I don’t even know if he’s alive anymore. You got to help me,” you said. Sam looked you up and down again, tilting his head at you. “What?”

“Dean told you to come here,” said Sam. “Dean did?”

“Yes,” you said. “He’s a uh...a demon.”

“I know that,” said Sam, opening the door wider and pulling you inside. “I tried to cure him a few months back. He nearly killed me before he escaped.”

“That doesn’t sound like the Dean I know,” you said. Sam went down a set of stairs, you on his tail as he spread his arms out at the tables in front of you to show you what looked like research.

“Demons lie to get what they want. If he wanted sex or a girlfriend, he’d say whatever he had to,” said Sam.

“But why send me back here? He loves me,” you said, Sam sighing before a grunt caught your attention.

“Left that front door open a bit too long, Sammy,” said Dean, standing at the top of the stairs. “Just needed a little diversion to jam it and let me walk straight in. Thanks for that by the way, kiddo.”

“Dean has been trying to kill me for months, Y/N,” said Sam. “No wonder why I haven’t heard from him lately.”

“I’m back at full demon strength again too, baby bro,” said Dean with a grin. “A little play acting here, a few demon deaths there...an idiot Levi who’d do anything to get his soul back after fucking up...and Y/N? It was like dealing with a little lovestruck puppy dog she was. Tsk tsk. Kiddo, you made it almost too easy.”

“You...what?” you asked, Dean laughing as he walked down a few steps.

“It wasn’t hard when literally everyone around you was lying to you. I wanted to kill Sammy but I couldn’t find a way to get him to come out or to get back in the bunker. Basically I figured trick my old high school sweetheart by scaring her into coming running to Sammy. He knew I talked about you every once in a while, checked up to make sure you were doing okay, that I still cared...he let you walk in like nothing. He’s been so careful too. The rest was just to have fun. Although the sex...that was certainly an unexpected bonus,” said Dean.

“Wow, you love hearing yourself talk, don’t you?” asked Sam, crossing his arms. Dean growled and made his way down the stairs, pushing you aside and straight for Sam.

“Oh, I’ve been dreaming of this day for a long-” he said before coughing.

“I’m sorry,” you said, pulling the demon blade you’d used out of Dean’s back, watching him fall against the table but stay upright for the most part. “Why didn’t it work?”

“He’s not a normal demon,” said Sam, grabbing Dean and pulling him through a hall and another, you right after them until Sam was tossing Dean in a room and chair.

“I wasn’t going to kill you kiddo but guess who made the naughty list,” said Dean, struggling as he was tied down, Sam cuffing him until he stopped moving.

“He’s not going anywhere,” said Sam.

“Is he okay?” you asked, Dean laughing.

“You just tried to kill me and now you care if my boo boo hurts?” he mocked.

“Yeah, it’s probably healing already,” said Sam. “I think she likes you jackass or else she could have got you somewhere far more lethal.”

“Okay, blah blah blah, let’s get going with this cure again so I can get loose, again, and rip you apart this time. Both of you actually,” said Dean, smiling at you.

“Y/N, can you stay here and watch him? I need to go get some things.”

Twelve Hours Later

“How’s he doing?” you asked Sam. He smiled as he pulled Dean’s door shut. “Is his back...”

“It’s perfectly fine. He’s pretty wiped but he wants to apologize to you when you’re ready,” said Sam.

“I’m the one that stabbed him,” you said.

“Dean says there’s more to it than that. About that night whatever that night is,” said Sam. “Give me a shout if you need anything.”

“Thanks Sam,” you said, waiting until he was gone to go into Dean’s room. He was on his bed, quietly staring at the door, wearing a sad smile. “Hey, De.”

“Hi kiddo,” said Dean. You sat down on the edge of the bed, Dean looking away. “Sorry about...using you like that.”

“You said to never trust a demon,” you said, Dean lifting his head cautiously. “I did trust you...just not all the way.”

“I told you about hunting,” said Dean. “I never wanted that for you.”

“I’ve killed a demon and almost got another one. I don’t think I’m too bad at it,” you said, Dean smiling and staring at his lap.

“You don’t have it in you to be mean to me, even when you have every right,” said Dean.

“Demon Dean, I’d be mean to him but you? You’re my, De,” you said, holding his hand. “You’re pretty mean to yourself from what Sam tells me.”

“We’ll call in our hunter friends, clear out the demons that are left in Little Gorge if there are any. There never was one in Colt. He’ll probably take over the Chief position. He was always a good guy. You should go home to him when it’s all said and done,” said Dean.

“Sam warned me you’d try to pull this,” you said. “I might have been living with an imposter the past two weeks but if I start over and think...think about how I felt when I saw you again after all these years...I still want that.”

“It’s not the way it works, Y/N. This life is horribly dangerous and-”

“And blah blah blah, I’m not buying what you’re selling, Dean. Tell me whatever it was you wanted to say about that night at the party and then let’s have our second shot at this,” you said.

“We left town because a demon was on our tail and dad wanted us out of there. He didn’t tell us until much later but that’s why we left. It’s how you got hurt and Levi sold his soul to get you back. He said it back at the house a few nights ago, everything started with me leaving that party,” said Dean.

“It was not your fault or your dad’s that he wanted to keep his kids safe. Levi is the one that pushed too far and got himself in that mess and he’s lucky he got his soul back. For a demon, a tricky bastard one I’ll give you that, you never did anything to me,” you said.

“You’re not going to just leave and go live a normal, quiet life now, are you?” asked Dean.

“Only if you want to come with,” you said. “Or else I’ll get used to this one.”

“It’s not a good idea, Y/N,” said Dean.

“Do you remember when I asked you if you wanted to go to homecoming with me and you said it wasn’t a good idea?” you asked, Dean biting his bottom lip. “You liked me but didn’t think you could have me so I had to prove you wrong.”

“If we do this, we take this slow and I mean slow, kiddo,” he said.

“Whatever you say, De.”

Three Months Later

“Hi, did you find everything you were looking for?” you asked, lifting your head up to find Dean leaning over the counter.

“You’re the only thing I’m looking for,” he said with a smirk. “You’re out of pie. Again.”

“A normal town does not go through as much pie as you do in a week, Dean,” you said. “I’ll make you one this weekend.”

“I want it now though,” he said with a whine.

“Any trouble? Never a good sign when a grown man is whining in a grocery store,” said Colt, coming up behind Dean in line.

“We’re out of pie so he’s upset,” you said, Colt nodding and hiding part of his cart.

“You took the last pie!” said Dean, Colt shrugging. “Some friend you are.”

“Eh, I got crazy Levi off your back to go get better in a nice cushy resort and a recommendation for the academy from the Chief of Little Gorge. That’s pretty good for someone who was a murder suspect three months ago,” said Colt.

“You’re the Chief, dumbass,” said Dean, pushing Colt’s shoulder but moving out of the way. “So...have you heard anything more on my application?”

“You’re not even thirty. You’re still worried about them rejecting it?” asked Colt.

“I’m worried about them rejecting me for having a juvie record and an unstable home life and living on the road most of my adult one. Then there’s my adult record and-”

“Colt,” you said, cocking your head at your friend. “Would you just tell him already?”

“Since you’re applying to the Little Gorge police department specifically and were unfairly harassed by Levi...I may have a little sway in the decision process,” said Colt.

“And...” said Dean, Colt straight faced. “Oh come on, this is cruel and unusual punishment.”

“Your acceptance package got delivered this morning. You’ll report to the academy the beginning of next month and six months from now, you’ll be deputy chief of Little Gorge,” said Colt.

“Congratulations, De,” you said, expecting a bigger reaction out of him. He wanted out of hunting after the demon incident but he needed to do something where he helped people. When the opening in town happened and with some persuading of Colt on your end to look past Dean’s record, you knew you’d found the perfect fit for him.

“Thank you Colt,” said Dean, nodding his head. “Really, thank you.”

“You got a job. I got pie. Even trade,” said Colt, your mind going back to work as Dean started to smile wide. “You better not fail anything. I don’t want to be running this town by myself for too long.”

“You got it, Colt,” said Dean. “I’ll do good, promise.”

“It’s your turn to buy pizza tonight,” said Colt, pointing a finger at you.

“It’s always my turn!” you said, getting a laugh out of him as he headed out and you turned your focus on Dean. “You’re going to be a cop.”

“Yeah,” he said, wearing a shy smile. “You knew, didn’t you? That’s why you asked me to swing by.”

“I may have been let on that some good news was coming your way. Sam might also be coming to visit since I told him...yesterday,” you said.

“He’s finally got a big brother he can be proud of,” said Dean.

“He’s always had one of those, De. I’m proud too,” you said. “For how far you’ve come the past few months.”

“I had some help from this girl I fell in love with a while back,” he said, leaning over the counter to kiss you. “My sweetheart.”

“Mm,” you said, smiling when he pulled away. “Give me ten minutes and then we can swing by the diner, bring home some pie for you.”

“Oh, I love you so much,” said Dean. “I’m going to fill up Baby while I’m waiting.”

“Don’t take too long.”

Dean POV

“Shit,” I said, kicking at the tire, huffing as the meter ticked up and up. I’d hoped getting rid of the demon side of me would calm things down. But all I could think of was ripping the guy whistling annoyingly a row over to shreds. This morning it was the neighbor washing the car. Yesterday, the mailman. Even good news wasn’t helping. When Baby finally finished, I shoved my sleeve up, the Mark red and pulsing. “Shit.”

“Something wrong Dean?” asked Colt, walking back to his cruiser to fill up his tank.

“Just you know, gas prices. This thing isn’t exactly fuel efficient,” I said adjusting my shirt, Colt nodding.

“Yeah but it’s awesome. It’s not like you have to drive everywhere in Little Gorge anyways,” said Colt.

“True,” I said, forcing a smile on. “I’ll swing by the station to talk about my training tomorrow.”

“See you around Winchester,” said Colt, turning his attention to his car as I got in Baby and pulled up outside the store to park.

“Relax, relax,” I said, squeezing my eyes shut. “It’s the Mark. It’s just a Mark. You can live with this. You can be good. Be good for her. Try to be good...she’d probably forgive us if we slipped up but gotta be good for Y/N.”

I took a big breath and got out, leaning against the building, the pressure of it building up again. I needed her. It felt a little better when Y/N was around, the urge not so much in the front of my mind. It was still there though, all the killing as a demon not helping to stop it.

“Ready whenever you are,” said Y/N, skipping out the front and locking up. She smiled and tossed her purse on the front bench of Baby before pursing her lips. She leaned in and opened the glove compartment, laughing as she shoved it in and grabbed something. “Dean, we should probably put this one away with all your hunting stuff too.”

“Yeah,” I said, taking the First Blade out of her hands. “I’ll put it in the basement with the other stuff when we get home.”

“Okay dokey,” she said, reaching her hand out to take hold of mine. I tucked the blade in my jeans and she snorted. “Are you really going to take that thing with us? Little Gorge is the safest place in the world now.”

“Well this way I won’t forget again,” I said with a smile, Y/N shrugging and starting the few block walk together, humming to herself. I’d nearly lost her the once as a demon and that I could explain away. The Mark though, that was a part of me I couldn’t get rid of, the part of me that liked feeling the blade close by, the part that liked some of the things the demon version did...liked a lot of them actually.

“Hey, I was thinking we could finally take that romantic trip we talked about,” said Y/N, looking up with bright eyes.

“Sounds great, sweetheart,” I said, breathing a sigh of relief, knowing it wouldn’t be hard to find someone in whatever town we ended up in to take care of that urge. Better there than here.

“You okay? You look kind of intense,” she said with a pout.

“I’m just nervous about the training,” I said, Y/N nodding.

“You’ll do fine, De, and then you’ll be Little Gorge’s deputy officer,” she said. “Cute uniform, second guy in charge around here...you’ll be a hot cop.”

“Yup,” I said, hoping it took her a good long while to figure out why being a cop would be a good thing, if she ever figured it out that was. Colt would have to be dealt with eventually but I’d find other ways to deal with that need until then. “So, where do you want to go on our trip, sweetheart? I know you said a cabin but what about a city? That’d be fun for a small town girl to see I think.”

“Maybe New York? I’ve always wanted to go, see all the sights and the shopping and the people,” she said, perking up. “Just like a weekend so we don’t blow all our money.”

“The city sounds perfect, sweetheart. Hopefully we can make this a regular thing.”

Shout-out to @saminzat for tagging me! Like I needed an excuse to waste time. ;)

LAST

1) Drink: Coffee... it’s like 10 p.m. at night, but I’m trying to stay awake to finish some work from the office (and yet I’m on tumblr doing this quiz instead, oops).

2) Phone call: A coworker called me so I’d have her new phone number.

3) Text message: “FYI, they don’t give you the money right back, you have to wait 4 - 6 WEEKS for a check in the mail, uggggh”. I bailed the same coworker out of jail about three months ago and went to the city municipal court today to get the bail money back... turns out things aren’t that simple.

4) Song listened to: Umm...so I’ve been listening to the Moana soundtrack pretty much non-stop for the last week. :D

5) Time you cried: A couple of weeks ago, reading the fic “Cursed or Not” for the first time (hey, you get to chapter 18 and try not to ugly cry, okay?).

Dave’s Ring Finger

Dave sat in the middle of the floor looking at the court order document, still dumbfounded by the request. Surrounding him were a towel, a large kitchen knife, and a first aid kit. "On February the 14th, in the year 2019 Mr. David Gorskey will surrender his Left Ring Finger to Miss Monica St. Cloud at a location and time to be determined by private council." Dave regretted the money he spent the past 5 months with his divorce lawyer arguing the insanity of the request but gave up as his anger had fallen on deaf ears and his lawyer had told him there was nothing else they could do. He was being legally forced by a judge in the State of California to surrender his left ring finger to his ex-wife. "The petitioner has requested the surrender of Mr. Gorskey's left ring finger in forfeit of all legal property and financial allocations through acquisition or liquidation." He continued to read, still confused at why she wouldn't have just taken the house, one of the cars, or all his money (which wasn't much in the first place), why it had to be a piece of his body. Picking up and examining the knife, Dave questioned it's sharpness and dependability to "get the job done", as the 18 year old kid at the hardware store put it. "So good knives they can cut right through bone!", a phrase that continued to run through his head as he prepared to do what he had to do. For a moment, glancing to a bottle on top of his fridge, he considered taking a few shots from the bottle of Jack Daniels that he received from his divorce lawyer as a thank you for using their services. Consideration killed by the thought of him getting too drunk and missing the proper finger thus creating an even bigger mess and problem.

It was beginning to get dark outside and Dave was running low on time. He was due to deliver the finger to his ex-wife at 10pm in her lawyers office. The stove top clock read 7:24pm and he was still too attached to the finger, sitting in the same spot for 4 hours now. His phone illuminated the dimly lit room with a text message, "Dan: Hey, you do it yet? Need some help?" His best friend Dan was a little too curious and fascinated by the whole ordeal since learning of it 2 months ago. Dave left out the details and was not ready to let him view the court documents which spelled everything out. "Hey, nope. Still attached. Can't stop you from coming over." Dave replied. A moment later he heard a faint new message pop, then a knock on his door. "Come in!" Dave yelled, startled by the sudden energetic door burst. " Okay dude, we got this. We'll get it done and you will be fine!" Dan placed some plastic bags on the counter in the kitchen, "I've been circling your block for a couple hours when I finally got the idea to go to the store for some provisions!" The bags contained potato chips, assorted candies, and minis of vodka, rum, and whisky. Dan was rummaging through Dave's fridge when he whistled at him, causing him to withdraw and look at Dave who was pointing to the dark brown bottle above his head, "GREAT! You got ice?"

8:45pm and the gentlemen were into their second time loudly singing Queen's "we are the champions". Dave, drunk and blissfully unaware of the time, looked at the strange assortment of items on the ground in the middle of the living room focusing on a shiny blade. This slapped some soberness into his thinking and he looked at the stove top clock which now read 8:50pm. "FUUUUUUUCCCCCKKKKK!!!!" Yelled David causing a nearby neighbors dog to bark into the night. Dan fell scared and confused over a table chair yelling "HOLY SHIT MAN! THE FUCKING HELL FUCK MAN!" Dave ran to pick up the knife and towel bringing them into the kitchen and placing them on the counter preparing to do what needed to be done. Dan shrieked "DUDE! WRONG FINGER!" Dave quickly dropped the knife to the counter once he noticed it was hovering his right ring finger and collapsed to the middle of the kitchen, beginning to cry. "Fucking bitch! The fuck! Why?! Why my fucking finger?!" Dan loomed in confusion having never heard the reason and still unsure as well. "Look man, why don't we just throw some shit in my car, cash out our bank accounts and hit the road, what's the worse they can do!? We'll go to Alaska and become Ice road truckers or some shit like that!" Dave looked at Dan with a pained look and began to laugh. "Ice road truckers!? That's your master plan?!" Dan chuckled nervously. "Yea, sounds stupid when you really bear it out loud." Dan suppressed his own urge to cry. The two men looked at the clock, 9:03pm. "FUCK!!" the two of them screamed loudly. "Look Dave, I don't know if we can honestly do this right now! We are both blitzed to shit and we have less than an hour!" Dan was physically shaking. “Like do you really have to do this?! Ive never heard of a court ordering someone to mutilate themselves for an ex. Why are you doing it?” Dave stood up collecting the knife and placing it over his left ring finger at the base. "Look Dan, I can't do this alone, I'm not convinced this will cut through bone because a 18 year old kid making $12.75 an hour told me they could. I need your help MAN! Plus I'm sure as fuck not gonna be able to drive after this." Dave was focused on the knife and his finger, not breaking eye contact as his hands began to shake from nerves. "Dan, please." Dan looked at his best friend in the eyes seeing the panic, fear, and pain. "Dude, I dont know if i can!? I still dont know why you have to do this in the first place?! Not just because a judge said so right!?" Dave didn’t break eye contact with the knife, “Look, If I don’t do this, the court will find a way to collect it anyways. No doctor I went to would do it for some bullshit reason or another and I’m doing it because… because.” Dave began to cry. “Yea?” Dan muttered. “Because I still love her and if this is what she wants or needs from me then she can fucking have it. I know deep down that one day I’ll be repaid somehow but for now I have to do this. For love.” Dan shed a tear. “Plus I can be held in contempt of court and be sent to jail, so I’m not really looking to do that.” Dave refocused on the knife. “Bone? I always thought it was the cartilage that was the tougher to cut.” Dan said placing his hand on the knife and holding down Dave's left hand.

The two men sped cross town to the lawyers office breezing through several red lights as Dave cursed obscenities out the window, clutching a floral tea towel on his now incomplete left hand. "Dude, if you get ANY blood on my seats, I will personally make you pay to detail it." Dan drove faster for greater fear of his best friend bleeding all over his car as opposed to the extreme pain, physical and emotional, his friend was agonizing over. "Look Dan, just get us there so we can get to the ER!" Dan even more furious at not knowing why his friend had to endure this ordeal began yelling, "WHY THE HELL DID YOU HAVE TO DO THIS ANYWAYS?!" Dave groaned. "Look, just get us there and more will be revealed!" Dan sped up, only to immediately pull his emergency brake, drifting crookedly into a parking spot in front of a inconspicuous building center of a sprawling business park. "NO DAVE!! I THINK I'VE BEEN PRETTY COOL ABOUT ALL OF THIS BUT NOW I HAVE YOU BLEEDING ALL OVER MY CAR BECAUSE I ASSISTED IN REMOVING YOUR FINGER FOR YOUR PSYCHO EX WHO GOT A COURT ORDER FOR IT!! I NEED SOME ANSWERS OTHER THAN LOVE BULLSHIT!" Dave looking panicked at the sudden car maneuver and halting of the vehicle "DUDE WHY DID YOU STOP?! WE GOT 5 MINUTES TO GET THERE!" Dan looked angrily at his bleeding friend, "I deserve some fucking answers and dude, we are there." Dave looked at the building, it was 9:56pm.

Dave let go of the tightly wrapped towel on his left hand to retrieve the small box from his jeans pocket. He felt it fitting to deliver the item in the same ring box that carried her engagement ring 10 years ago. The two men entered the building greeted by a security guard who nodded them through, unbeknown to what was transpiring that night. The law offices were on the 3rd floor of a 5 floor building that looked like it could be in Austin, Massachusetts or Burbank, Kansas. The elevator let them off in front of a set of inconspicuous doors that led to a large modern lobby where a pretty blonde receptionist sat typing away. “Hello, do you have an appointment?” She said to the two men as if normal business hours still applied. “Oh, I’m so sorry, the urgent care center is on the 2nd floor!” Obviously replying to Dave holding a bloody towel an looking rather pale. “Yes, we have an appointment.” Dan smiled at the blonde.

The two men were lead to an office occupied by a man in the blue suit who looked as uncomfortable as possible and a woman in a black cocktail dress ready for a night out. Monica St. Cloud looked like a model ready for a photoshoot or someone just stopping by on her way for a night out. “Gentlemen, welcome.” Greeted the lawyer without looking up from a piece of paper he was reading. When he finally looked, his general unease and discomfort was elevated once he saw the bloody towel held by Dave. “Oh, um, should he go to the hospital? Do I need to call an ambulance?” Dan looked at Dave’s face growing more pale by the second, “Naw, he’s gonna live. Can we just get this over?” Dave walked over to the lawyer's desk past Monica who was standing a foot to his left, and placed the box on his desk. The lawyer looked at it with more discomfort. Monica whose eyes hadn’t left the box since she saw it enter the room walked over to the desk and retrieved her prize. “I request you don’t open that till you leave my office please.” The lawyer was able to choke out. Monica looked from the box for the first time to Daves face. “Thank you.” she replied with a strange sense of warmth and desire. “I love you” said Dave. Monica returned focus to the box and briskly walked out of the office. The 3 gentlemen remained in silence till Dan could no longer take it. “WHAT THE FUCK MAN?! WILL SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHY THE HELL I HAD TO HELP MY BEST FRIEND CUT HIS FINGER OFF FOR HIS PSYCHO EX-WIFE?!” The lawyer looked at Dan startled and confused. “You don’t know? You haven’t read the court order?” Dan looked at Dave sitting in a chair, “NO! Someone has been quiet about it.” The lawyer retrieve a document from his desk. Dan looked at it and began to read it aloud. “This document is to serve notice that the Honorable Judge Marshal Brown has granted the request for divorce and the division and allocation of property between Mr. David Gorskey and Monica St. Cloud. On February the 14th, in the year 2019 Mr. David Gorskey will surrender his Left Ring Finger to Miss Monica St. Cloud at a location and time to be determined by private council. The petitioner has requested the surrender of Mr. Gorskey's left ring finger in forfeit of all legal property and financial allocations through acquisition or liquidation. This request was initially met with hesitation and concern, however was granted by Judges decision after Miss St. Cloud passed a court mandated Psychological evaluation and gave a rousing defence of her decision and desire for the item in question.” Dan looked at Dave and the lawyer “THERE IS NO WAY THIS IS SANE?!” The lawyer encouraged Dan to keep reading. “Judge Marshall Brown after much deliberation and consideration of the passionate and rousing testimony that Miss St. Cloud gave to her reasons behind the acquisition of such an unusual request made the decision easier. The Judge writes: while the court is not one to always align itself in matters of the heart or base its decisions on those parameters, I was touched on how eloquently Miss St. Cloud spoke on the matter of love and loss during a divorce hearing. The following had so much love, emotion, and courage that was ultimately my deciding factor: When I met dave, I didn’t know I would fall in love. I knew he was kind and sweet but strong and passionate, all the qualities a girl looks for in a man. It wasn’t till after our 3rd date, I knew I couldn't be without him. However, things weren’t always great and we tried. It took me time to realize that I wasn’t in love with him anymore. However I knew I was still in love. Not with Dave. I don’t know if it was magic, luck, or intelligent design. Sometimes the cosmic forces align to show us true love, and I found it. Sadly not with Dave, but with his left ring finger. That was the spark that made me fall for him and stay as long as I could.” Dan, confused even more, was interrupted by Monica reentering the room without the box and a huge smile plastered on her face. “Monica, where is Dave's finger? Where’s the box?” She fixed her dress which was riding up a little. “Oh I threw it away.” She replied. Dan dropped the document, “you mean I helped cut off my best friends finger JUST SO YOU COULD FUCKING THROW IT AWAY?!” She laughed at his anger, “No, I threw the box away. The finger is where it belongs.” She grinned wickedly. “Alright, we are done here and I need to leave. Please let us exit.” The lawyer began pushing everyone out. Dan still unsatisfied, “MONICA! WHERE THE FUCK IS THE FING-” As if being struck by lightning, the answer hit him and the rest of the room. Dan’s jaw hung open and the breath left his body. Monica slowly walked to the door and left the three men in stunned silence. “Dan, can you help me up. I really need to get to the hospital now.” Dan, shaken from his realization, collected Dave from the fancy leather chair he collapsed in and began to carry him out of the room.

The three men stood waiting for the elevator as the blonde secretary and monica had already left. They entered and descended to the lobby not making any eye contact or saying any more words to each other. Once in the lower lobby they could see monica slowly making her way through the parking lot to a waiting black car. The lawyer broke the silence “Mr. Gorskey, I wanted you to know that while my team were doing their discovery in preparation of getting Miss St. Cloud’s financial settlement ready, we found a few unclaimed assets and properties your father had and never filed proper documents to transfer to you. I understand this may be difficult for you, but I would be willing to insure these items get to you and you receive proper financial compensation, pro-bono, for all youve had to endure.” Dave looked at the lawyer, face blank and paler than before, “Can you just send it to my own lawyers office please. Oh and kindly fuck off. You’ve been a big enough help already.” He then proceeded to remove the tea towel from his hand and flipped him of with his right middle finger, exposing the wound of the missing ring finger. The lawyer almost regurgitated finally but held it in. “As you wish sir.” The men were then startled by a loud shriek and noticed Monica collapsing to the ground just before reaching her waiting black car. The lawyer and Dan rushed out to insure she was okay, however, Dan stopped half way when he realized what had happened. He turned to face Dave who stood supported by a trash can, with another shocked and disgusted look on his face. The two men then looked as the lawyer helped monica up and in the vehicle. There was an exchange of words, then the lawyer backed away, the car door closed, and drove off. It was 5 seconds later that the lawyer finally threw up in the middle of the parking lot. “I’ll bring the car around. Wait there.” Dan slowly shuffled toward the car as Dave stood there having lost a lot of blood, woozy and dazed, and began to laugh.

Real or not? Brewers blow golden opportunity to catch Rockies – SweetSpot

The Rockies had already lost, shut out 4-0 in an afternoon game in San Francisco. With a win, the Brewers would tie the Rockies for the second wild card.

Milwaukee’s starter in this crucial game with 12 days left in the season: Aaron Wilkerson.

Who?

Baseball in September can be a strange thing as even playoff contenders scramble to fill holes on pitching staffs worn down by injuries and fatigue. In Milwaukee’s cause, the Brewers needed somebody to start for Jimmy Nelson, their best pitcher who went down for the season — and part of 2018 — when he partially tore a labrum diving back into first base after a base hit on Sept. 8.

Wilkerson had gone undrafted out of Cumberland University, played independent ball in 2013 and part of 2014, then signed with the Red Sox and was traded to the Brewers last summer in the Aaron Hill deal. He spent the season at Double-A with good numbers (3.16 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 143 K’s in 142⅓ IP), made a start for Colorado Springs in the Pacific Coast League playoffs and tossed seven no-hit innings. Still, he’s not even included in MLB.com’s top 30 Brewers prospects, a nod to his age (he’s 28) and lack of pedigree.

But here he was, making his first major league start.

“We’ll just see how far he can get,” manager Craig Counsell had said before the game. “Obviously, it’s his first big league start and it’s a big spot, but we feel like he’s been pitching in a way that we think he can have success out there.”

Wilkerson would last just 2⅓ innings on Wednesday, giving up three runs in the third, but it was All-Star closer Corey Knebel who would fail in the end. The Brewers had taken a 4-3 lead over the Pirates in the seventh. In the eighth, Andrew McCutchen doubled off Anthony Swarzak and Counsell brought in Knebel for a four-out save. David Freese hit a little dribbler down the third-base line, a do-or-die play for Knebel. He had a chance with a perfect throw, but he also could have just eaten the ball and gone after the next batter. Instead, his throw sailed wide and McCutchen scored the tying run. Then in the ninth, Adam Frazier won it with a two-out homer off a 98 mph heater:

So, tough one for the Brewers. Now comes their biggest test of the season: A four-game series at home against the Cubs. Hey, sweep them again and the Brewers move into first place. (The Cubs lead the National League Central by 3½ games.) You wonder who’s going to available in the Milwaukee bullpen in that first game, however. Knebel has pitched three days in a row. Swarzak has pitched three days in a row. Josh Hader has pitched twice in three days and thrown 42 pitches.

Counsell and pitching coach Derek Johnson have done a terrific job with the Brewers’ staff. They’ve had to churn through 13 different starting pitchers. They’re still in it. They have 10 games left in 11 days, and they can still catch the Cubs. Who’s available? Everyone.

We love our round numbers in baseball. Chris Sale needed 13 strikeouts to get to 300, and he got 13 in a 9-0 victory over the Orioles:

Sale became the first American League pitcher to get 300 K’s since Pedro Martinez in 1999 — and joined Pedro as the only Red Sox hurler to get there. He’s the seventh lefty in AL history to do so, joining Rube Waddell (look him up!) and Sam McDowell (“Sudden Sam” — one of the best nicknames ever), who each did it twice, plus Randy Johnson, Vida Blue and Mickey Lolich. Five NL lefties have done it: Clayton Kershaw, Johnson (four times), Sandy Koufax (three times), Steve Carlton and Lady Baldwin back in 1886. Anyway, awesome milestone, but the important number from this game was that zero runs allowed. The Yankees had won earlier, so the Red Sox kept the margin in the AL East at three games. Since Sept. 5, the Yankees have gone 11-3 — but the Red Sox have gone 11-3. Boston’s magic number to clinch the division drops to eight, but they clinched a playoff berth with the Angels’ loss to the Indians on the West Coast.

Wild-card winner of the night. Well, we just told you the Rockies and Brewers lost. But the Cardinals won! They’re 2½ back of the Rockies. My man Tommy Pham had three hits, while Matt Carpenter, Dexter Fowler and Paul DeJong all homered in a 9-2 victory over the Reds. The Cardinals get the Reds again on Thursday, with a decisive advantage in the pitching matchup — Carlos Martinez versus Homer Bailey. Does it feel like the final mile of a marathon and the Cardinals might still have their legs for that final sprint?

Wild-card loser of the night. The Rockies have held a playoff position since April 14, and they’re safe for at least another couple of days. Despite these two road losses to the Giants, the Rockies could still finish with the best road record in franchise history. They’re 39-38, and they have finished above .500 on the road just once, going 41-40 in 2009, which was the year of their last playoff appearance. Their home winning percentage, however, is just 10th best in franchise history.

The Rockies have hit reasonably well on the road (for them) with a .706 OPS, the highest since 2009. But they haven’t hit as well at home as they have in some years. Their home/road OPS differential:

If the Rockies end up missing the postseason, most will blame the pitching staff. And yes, the young starters and the bullpen haven’t been as good in the second half. But another reason to think about: They haven’t scored enough runs at home.

If you can mention Bye Bye Balboni, you have to do it. One of the most cherished records in team sports was finally broken on Wednesday. Steve Balboni’s Royals record of 36 home runs had stood since 1985, but Mike Moustakas finally broke it with this homer:

Moustakas had been in a huge home run slump. He hit his 35th way back on Aug. 15. Since then, he had homered just once in 28 games and 91 at-bats. Some Royals fans wondered if Balboni had placed a curse on Moustakas. Apparently not the case. Remember a couple of years ago when Moustakas tried to focus more on hitting the ball to the opposite field? He went back to pull-heavy Moustakas this season. He has hit 15 more home runs than his previous career high.

He’s also the owner of my favorite oddballs stats of the season. Moustakas has struck out looking once all season — on a pitch low and away off the plate. Baltimore’s Chris Davis has fanned looking 72 times. That seems incredible, but Davis did it 79 times last season. Aaron Judge and Wil Myers are tied for second at 60.

Anyway, there were five team home run records older than Balboni’s:

Ralph Kiner, Pirates — 1949 (54)

Roger Maris, Yankees — 1961 (61)

Harmon Killebrew, Twins — 1964, 1969 (49)

Big boys go yard. Giancarlo Stanton hit No. 56 and Aaron Judge hit No. 45. Judge also joined an exclusive club with Ted Williams and Al Rosen as rookies to reach 100 RBIs and 100 runs scored. There is some dispute over whether Rosen should be a considered a rookie: He wasn’t at the time (1950), but he would be under today’s standards, as he had just 65 plate appearances before that season.

That’s 41 in 111 games for Martinez. That’s a pace of 59 homers over 160 games, but he missed time with an injury. His slugging percentage with Arizona is over .700 and it’s .672 overall — and 38 points higher than Stanton’s. Incredible.

Disaster strikes Puerto Rico. There have been 28 major leaguers to play in 2017 who born in Puerto Rico, including Francisco Lindor, Yadier Molina, Carlos Beltran, Carlos Correa and Jose Berrios. There are other players of Puerto Rican descent born in the States. Hurricane Maria — the first Category 4 hurricane to make a direct hit on the island since 1928 — has devastated the country. The entire island is without power. It could take months to repair the aging power grid, depending on the damage discovered, the governor said.

You can check the Twitter handles as many players sent out their thoughts. It couldn’t have been easy to play as they waited for news. As ESPN’s Marly Rivera reported, “I have talked or texted with a lot of the Puerto Rican players in MLB, and a lot of them have not heard from their families regarding the impact of Hurricane Maria.” Without power, communication is limited.

As the Houston area sets out on the long recovery from Hurricane Harvey and Florida from Hurricane Irma, don’t forget Puerto Rico, if you can afford a financial donation. Remember, these are our fellow U.S. citizens.

Then there was the earthquake in Mexico City that already has left more than 200 dead, as workers continue to dig through the rubble. These are our neighbors to the south. There are 15 major leaguers this season who were born in Mexico — interestingly, 14 of them pitchers — and, of course, many others of Mexican descent.

So, as we enjoy these final days of this little diversion called baseball, I think of those not as fortunate.

I think of a quote from Carl Sagan: “This is where we live, on a blue dot. … On that blue dot, that’s where everyone you know, and everyone you ever heard of, and every human being who ever lived, lived out their lives — it’s a very small stage in a great cosmic arena. I think this perspective underscores our responsibility to preserve and cherish that blue dot, the only home we have.”

I'm Nothing If I'm Not Honest

I made a Tumblr today. It's January but I've been thinking about summer in May. Is that this May or last May? Searching for direction, is it this way or that way? Another outlet to express myself. If I've got a problem, the pen can help. Writing my emotions is conducive to my mental health. The state of depression I'm in has got me pressing the pen. Don't want to jinx it, but I think I've gotten better again. Riding with the seat back so I can stretch in the Benz. My thoughts rising, what a clever ascent. Shaun's writing, the letters I sent seemed to lessen my friends. But I guess I've learned a lesson from them. Be careful who you give your all to. I gave my heart but they weren't as thoughtful. But hey, I've got more bars than law school. Fighting demons while writing entire verses of punchlines. Searching for just one sign. Mom trying to remove the darkness, she just wants to see her son shine. Depression and the pressure got me feeling like it's crunch time. I know that I've got what it takes, yet I'm unsigned. You can't rush time, I watched and learned. This food for thought will be the death of me, pots and urns. I was patiently waiting, it was not my turn. But almost everything I once loved has not returned. So now I'm hungry as hell. Time to show my mother her son can excel. And grace the cover of a double XL. I can't afford to buy a dream and I've got nothing to sell. Literally broke as a joke, my money's funny as hell. My conscience saying you should keep your love to yourself. Those people don't need you, they just wanted your help. Once they didn't need Shaun, they didn't want to see Shaun. I've been trapped behind these bars, now I'm yelling free Shaun. It's so hard to focus, I'm writing another three songs. Writing raps in freeform, can't another speak for him. Problem? Address me, Shaun. You know I never mean harm. It's my story I write, how can it ever be wrong? I wrote a 16 at 4:00, Military time. Currently brandishing my lyrical artillery in lines. I'm on a mission so sometimes I get biblical in rhymes. These verses tell a story, these words can tell it for me They're coming from the heart and it hurts They're kinda gory. The game needed life, I'm giving it blood. See my drive? I'm an organ donor, I'm giving out love. No shoulders to spare but I can give you a hug. I'm overprepared, there isn't much I didn't discuss. In an effort to stand for others, I fell victim to trust. So many people switching it sucks. So many thoughts running through my head that racing to get them written is tough. It's taking way longer to finish writing this thing than it's supposed to but my head is just in too many places. People turning their back showing me too many faces. Broken trust got me feeling like the truth isn't sacred. Depression's a feeling I'm getting used to explaining. It overtakes my writing, I don't try to do this, it's draining. But even tragedy is art, the proof's in these paintings. Nothing's the same and that sucks when you aren't choosing to change things. Too much in my head so I'll just let it out. To Whom It May Concern, I'm writing letters now. Been writing for a while, I'm getting better now. Signs of life in my smile, I keep my head up now. But no one ever sees that in my head I frown. I never said a sound. Toes, ten are down. I once had a close knit circle, they haven't been around. I guess I'm the villain now. Might seem like I'm dwelling now. But I'm in pain, writing's what keeps the swelling down. I know he'll never switch up so I'm never letting Brendon down. I'm writing trying to keep up, these rhymes tend to spin my head around. Trying to clean my tweets up, I'm followed by my professor now. Word to Lil Dicky I'm trying to be professional. I'm pretty sure I'm lost on a tangent but I can't let up now. Mind is being sped up now. Rhyming as you read the sounds. Time has really stressed me out. Trying not to stretch this out. So much pain and punchlines I cried in what you read about. Writing just to let it out. Punchlines, my pen can pound. Touch lines, tennis fouls. Serving food for thought in a lunch line, I'm fed up now. Thank God for grilled cheese, I'm trying to get my bread up now. I've been lost in my head, take a look at what the pen has found. I understand, the pressure's on my mind too. Deviate from the mean, never let em define you. Keep your head up and don't let them break you down because they'll try to. Limit extrinsic experiences' effect on what's inside you. Lyrics so poetic that you read them as a haiku. Wavy as typhoons Spitting flames but my ride cool Painting in haiku A timely 16, there's 8 up on the shot clock. But don't call it a battle, cause we ain't dealt with the same scars. You ever felt like you had the light until it became dark? Ever felt like you had to fight the pairofsights in your brain off? Ever been unemployed and still searching for a day off? To lose yourself in a moment in hopes of making the pain stop. We ain't dealt with the same scars. I fell in love with a girl like you, I've got the same heart. So many people changed up on me, it didn't change Shaun. So much stress you worked 20 hours and quit your day job. And plenty looking from outside in thinking you're way off. A couple people feel you yet even they don't know the half of it. Christmas just passed, what God gave me was this rapping gift. But I ain't have no gifts to wrap. Not much left to give in fact. But I've got these words and my heart, I can give you that. But I've gotta be careful. I know it's a handful. Cause I fell in love before. But that's over, it's cancelled. Viciously descriptive, I'll show an example. She did me dirty as the sole of her sandals. I once thought her soul was enchanted now there's no second chances. So excuse me if I'm a pensive romantic. Pictures I paint are depressingly candid. 10 toes down as I step to my canvas. To elevate my point of view from elegant stances. Shorty turned into a witch, I should've left it in Kansas. Or maybe Kansas City, I'm mired in Misery. A State of depression that's trying to kill the kid in me. But I'll do it differently. Eight nine in Tennessee. I'm in the field trying to be a Titan of industry. Let me Cook, rhyming so endlessly, lose my mind in my memories. Devil trying to finish me. Asking God to replenish me. Writing these rhymes repentantly. Trying to find what's meant for me. Ayo, here's a message B. Something you may never C. You were a special friend to me, I'ma just skip the letter D. Your switch up has got my head on E. You "love" me but don't remember me. I've been feeling down and that's effed up, you switched your enerGy. I'll skip the HtoO, won't even talk about the tears. Am I talking to "my girl?" Or am I talking to my peers? I'm just talking to the world, so I let everybody hear. Now I've learned my largest lesson. Don't think anybody cares. You left me at a time I needed everybody near. Facing feelings of abandonment, depression, and my fears. I went from feeling prophetic here to feeling pathetic here. I loved my creating writing class because my professor cared. These writtens are my therapy. You switched up and it's clear to see that you're no longer there for me. I guess it's my fault for thinking that you cared for me. Picking up the pieces to my heart, so now I use it carefully. Cause when you're not theirs anymore They're not there anymore And that makes it crystal that they do not care anymore. Told you about a couple scars, there's plenty more. This verse is the one I didn't think that I was ready for. You ever look back at a bond you shared and just be sad it's changing? But when it boils down to it, it's clear it's evaporating. When your brother crosses the stage and you aren't there for graduation. And he's starting his career, but you can't congratulate him. It's not the same, it's clear that it ain't. Ever been threatened on a mom when you shed tears at her wake? I didn't think so. So don't tell me how to handle my pain. I never canceled or changed. 10 toes down, I stand and remain. Thank The Lord that God's never got his hands full, I'm praying. I feel the demons trying to get their hands on my brain. I've been living under a dark cloud, I ran through the rain. I've been stuck in depression, but I'm nearing a change. I just write the things that I don't care to explain when someone asks what's wrong with me. Been trying to be strong for weeks. In person I say I'm fine, but truthfully in these songs I speak. Battle scars, in these lyrics I've been fighting. Rhymes so real I shiver as I write this. A week ago I was ready to give up on this life shit. So much pressure was in my head that I wanted to pull my mind out. Not suicidal but I was thinking "do I wanna die now?" So many I can't call anymore, who do I dial now? Who can really handle the thoughts that I couldn't write down? I called Maiya and cried my eyes out. And she told me to take a timeout. My eyes are dry now. She figuratively talked me off the ledge, speaking softly as she said the things I didn't know I needed to hear. That was last week, even last year. And I've been feeling better since. Loading up these weapon clips. I've got enough bars to send the messages I never sent. It's effortless, that's evident. Sentimental sentences. Shouldn't ever mention this. You're sleeping on me, that meaning has been twirled. I miss when it meant me running my fingers through your curls. Now I only speak to you when I'm speaking to the world. Now it's pretty clear I'm speaking to "my girl". At least that's what she used to be. I guess she just got used to me. She don't see what she used to see. Now that she don't need a retweet, she doesn't have a use for me. I'm just speaking truthfully, sharing my heart profusely. I gave my heart to so many people, now they're reducing me. But it's all good cause I'm bred thorough, I'm a newer breed. I'll repeat it for you to read. I'm the shit, I'm manure breed. This wordplay is child's play. Wrote this for two days, Thursday and Friday. Flow so sick that some would say it's toxic. Painted pictures of my pain, suffering as an artist.
