my biggest problem with the PJO show right now is that the gods have been stripped of deity. none of them really feel like *gods,* they’re all just… guys. they have moments of power, but most of it just feels so situational— ares feels just about as threatening to the trio as any biker is to any set of children. it feels like they’re up against “an adult”, not the actual incarnate god of battle. poseidon is announced by a thunderstorm when he comes to talk to sally— fantastic, i love that touch, bring out POSEIDON, god of the sea, of the depths, earthshaker, STORMBRINGER— and two seconds later, he’s indistinguishable from any other mortal deadbeat dad in a bar. none of the gods have a proper AURA about them that makes you feel the way their domain should. poseidon should make you feel the way the SEA does, but all he is is a guy with an accent.
dont get me wrong, making the gods mortally relatable is a good angle! they feel more like people, and definitely *can* be more interesting characters for it. but i think the show just strips them of so much of what makes gods so interesting inherently that it doesn’t balance out. the greek gods are lenses through which generations of people for thousands of years managed to wrap their minds around their lives and the natural world. but wouldn’t it be funny if hades was silly and goofy?
my favorite gods in the series so far have been hermes and dionysos, probably because their characterizations in classical mythology fit best with disguising themselves as mortals the way they do. when hermes eyed the children from across the busy room, and without a thought for the dozens of mortal witnesses, openly greeted them and named them as demigods? i LIKED that, because it *felt* like he was very powerful, but was being sly with his power, as you would expect hermes the god of thieves and trickery to be. when i looked into his eyes, for a moment, it felt like a liminal space. like he was staring at me from outside of time, *as you would expect hermes to do as the liminal god.* and then, a few minutes later, his conversation with the children strikes a great balance between relatably mortal and also deific feeling. he *was* the liminal god outside of time, and this was at conflict with his very earthly and grounded love for his son. there was a good and interesting tension presented between those two worlds.

Ares Daughter: “You don’t need to worry about us getting back to camp dad. Besides *holding up the compass around her neck looking fondly at it* I’m never lost.”
*Leaves with Percy*
Ares: “I’m going to murder that kid.”
Poseidon: “Careful, Ares Hermes will murder you first once threatened his kid. Besides I think they’ll be a great couple.” ~
Ares: *turns to him and smirks* “Yeah and I think your kid and Athena daughter would be a great couple too.”~
They will have a terrific time teasing each other

A touching rendition of 'Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story':
Hermes: Can I show you what I'm proudest of? Chorus that comes from nowhere: The delivery service... Hermes: I established the most efficient delivery system in the world... Chorus that comes from nowhere: The delivery service... Hermes: I've abandoned thousands of children, I saw, like, three of them as they were growing up... Chorus that comes from nowhere: Abandoned kids... Hermes: In their eyes I saw me - Hermes the messenger god - I saw me all three times... and I think that I'll do it again, it's only a matter of time... Luke from somewhere in the audience: This song sucks!

Hermes is one of the best godly parents in Percy Jackson
I must admit that I may be lacking information because I haven't read ALL of Rick Riordan's books, but still...
One of the arguments I've seen for saying that Hermes is a bad father is about how he dealt with the situation with Luke, and that leads me to one of the things I hate the most: The gods have rules set by themselves, and they are supposed to follow them. But there is a clear distinction in the way they are followed depending on the rank of the god
Many times I have read about how they call Hermes a bad father for not doing anything for Luke, when in my opinion it was clear that Hermes was absolutely broken. And he did absolutely everything he could
But you have those rules of how gods should behave with mortals and demigods. Rules set by Zeus
Rules that we see Hades, Poseidon and Zeus himself break a thousand times. BECAUSE THEY ARE THE ONES WITH POWER
And then there are the rest of the gods, who must comply with them. Because Zeus is obviously going to ignore his own faults, and Zeus is also going to ignore (partially) the faults of Poseidon and Hades. Because yes, he is the god of gods, but those two are his brothers and have a fairly equivalent level of power
But Zeus is not going to have the same level of understanding with the rest of the gods. Hades and Poseidon seem to be better progenitors because they have the privilege of bending the rules without consequences.
Hermes doesn't have that

I know there have been a lot of memes about LMM Hermes, but imho Nathan Fillion Hermes was more cursed, if only because outside of promotional materials he wore an ill-fitting suit and a comically large bluetooth headset to try to make him "with the times".

from previous post where it said “When she comes back she hears Area telling Grover how he doesn't care about his kids (according to the tv show)” this would be the part where she said to Ares from the other previous post that she said “he never care about her or his other children back at camp. But to add more salt in the wound, Ares daughter continues saying
“You said the gods would put the others down in order to get ahead right? Because power, glory, and attention is all you guys care about right? Is that why you had me, Clarisse, and the rest? Just to further your own ego and use us to prove yourself to other gods that you’re better than them? *Bitterly laughs* You know after Percy kill Medusa and send her head to Olympus. Your sister Athena was so butthurt that her past actions of what she did to Medusa caught up to her and she took it out Annabeth not even wanting to help her or us because of this so called “disrespectful act.” This whole thing is just game to you guys. The moment we did one little mistake you turn your back on us. But the moment we do something great. You immediately start caring. Like we’re your freaking kids! Everyone back at camp, Percy, Luke, Annabeth, and me shouldn’t be chasing for the gods attention just so we can feel loved and validated whenever we complete a quest to make your guys feel good about your image! You should just love and care about us because we’re children! I mean….out of all the gods I thought you would understand because you know what is like to be unloved by your own parents. So why would you do it to us when you know what it’s like to be unloved? Especially by the people who should care about you.”
Percy and Annabeth comes in just in time to hear their friend going off about her feelings about the gods.
The angst🥺🥺

Very bold of Disney+ to have Hermes as the banner for this week’s episode when he had like three minutes of screentime and that screentime amounted to “Hey kids, come gamble with me… I am not a good father. But hey, the gods are TRYING, okay, you don’t know how hard it is to be an all powerful deity. No, I’m not going to help you, but funnily enough I’m the god of thieves and I ‘didn’t notice’ the kid with the invisibility hat pickpocketing me, have a free map to the Underworld and don’t crash my car.” Really life changing stuff there, Lin.

percy: you’re hermes? wait aren’t you that guy who wrote hamilton
hermes: i made a bet with apollo bc he said i wouldn’t be able to write a musical better than him. i needed to prove my superiority. artemis gave us each a topic to write about.
percy: what was his show about?
hermes: spider-man.
percy: there’s a broadway show about spider-man??
hermes: exactly.
