What would be your single greatest fear in meeting the POTUS?

I don't think I'd have any sort of fear, but my behavior would probably depend on which President we're talking about.

I've met Obama a few times, but it was during the 2008 campaign while he was a Senator, so I'm not sure if that counts. I mean, we didn't hang out or anything. Just a hug/handshake and few words the first time, and brief handshakes the other two times.

I do think that the institution of the Presidency creates an aura around whichever person serving in the office at the time that probably makes meeting the actual, incumbent President a pretty unique experience. Personally, I think I'd be more awe-struck or affected by walking into the Oval Office, whether the President was there or not (I'm not sure why I'd be there alone...but still). Even when I've visited Presidential Libraries with Oval Office replicas, I still kind of catch my breath because it feels like history -- especially if you're someone like me who has been interested in reading about the Presidents and Presidency since I was in second grade. That's why the Nixon Library is such a cool experience because it's the only one of the Presidential Libraries that I've visited (so far) that lets you walk around the replica of the office with a little more freedom to explore. The @richardnixonlibrary even used to allow you to actually sit down at Nixon's desk -- and it is the actual desk that Nixon used while he was President (it is called the "Wilson Desk" and Nixon apparently chose it because he thought it was used by Woodrow Wilson, but it was actually used by Ulysses S. Grant's second Vice President Henry Wilson in the 1870s). That hands-on experience may have changed since COVID, but it was one of the things that made the Nixon Library stand out after they revamped it in 2016.

Affection: How affectionate are they? What do they do to show you they love you? What’s their love language?

Jealousy: Are they jealous? How do they react if you’re jealous?

I don’t see Henry as a very jealous man. He trusts you enough for that. I guess the only thing that could anger him is when men are being disrespectful towards you (which is pretty natural). Although he might show some possessiveness but it’s definitely not jealousy.

I think he finds it endearing! He loves the way you keep staring up and down the girl smiling a bit too much at him. And he’s definitely not complaining about the way you stay close all the time.

He might tease you a bit and smirk at your reaction but he’ll do anything to reassure you: he’ll make sure to kiss your cheek (especially when the girl is looking at him), hold your hand and of course, he’ll remind you you’re the only girl for him.

Protective: How protective are they? How do they react when you have/want to protect them?

Henry is very protective of you! Not in the same way Tommy or Alfie would be for example but he’s the classic family man from the 1940s. He wants you to be safe, to have everything you need. Even after he comes back from the war and your relationship changed, he still looks out for you.

Before the war, if you want to protect him, he finds it cute. As I said, he’s from the 1940s so at that time it was the man’s “job” to protect the woman and not the other way around. But he’d still appreciate, it makes him feel loved and cared for.

After the war though…the idea that you want to protect him is probably enough to make him cry. He doesn’t understand, he doesn’t know why you’d actually bother but it’s everything he needs. There is a part of him that feels ashamed because he wants to be strong enough you wouldn’t need to protect him. But that’s one of the things that help him heal.

Years: How fast does your relationship evolves? Weeks, months, years?

Considering he’s from the 1940s, your relationship definitely evolves fast. It was pretty common for people to get married only after a few months/a year after dating and I think that’s what would happen here,

However, I do think that the time between when you meet/he has a crush on you and when he actually admits it might be very long. He’s definitely the kind to have a crush on a girl and admit it years later!

Today is Dungeons & Daddies’s 5th Anniversary!

I haven’t been listening for nearly that long but the podcast and all its characters means a lot to me. Happy Anniversary!!!

Throwing the cropped sections under the cut because there’s a lot of stuff going on and I know Tumblr likes to throw half the pixel quality out the window. And also so I can ramble a bit about this piece!!!

This piece has been months in the making, possibly an entire year. And by that I mean I’ve had a sketch of the comp scribbled on my whiteboard for ages because I wanted to save this specifically for 5th anni art. Now onto design stuff!

(First off a random thought: I really love how the garlic knot came out, I kind of want it as an enamel pin.)

I knew I wanted to make this a stained glass piece since the beginning, but I was also going to add flowers at one point but quickly dropped the idea. It felt like too much and I also didn’t want to fuss over flower language assignments for everyone. I was also going to add Doodler tentacles, but also dropped that idea pretty early. Kind of on accident, right at the end, I figured out how to make it even more stained glass-like but taking a duplicated lineart underneath the regular layer and turning the brightness all the way down, then setting it to overlay and adding a guassian blur. It’s very subtle but it adds that tiny bit of depth that makes it look more real. As for shading on the lineart/gold, I tried adding more highlight on the characters who died but once I evened everything out it wasn’t as noticeable anymore so I’m throwing that thought here so the attempt at least known lol.

The order of characters only changed a little bit from my original comp, I flipped the Wilsons and the Oaks so the rainbow could work. As for the anchors, specifically in season 2, I lined them up to the teens since the season 1 anchors lined up with each dad:

Tony —> Scary: his death was the beginning of Scary’s betrayal arc and also Willy killed him.

Guitar Pick —> Taylor: it’s not really aligned with Taylor at all, but the anchor was with Glenn so I put it next to his blunt.

Scroll —> Normal: was only because it was the last left to give him, but there’s the whole scene of him and Hermie in the Green Room so it still works!

Garlic Knot —> Link: one of two that he broke, but the more significant of the two with him telling Grant he never wants to see him again.

Small notes on the season 1 anchors: I put the layer of mold in the overnight oats but you can’t really tell with the overlay. And to make the supper bowl more interesting I added the fantasy sodas mix they dumped into it. The lure of actually drawn before so I just traced my own art lol.

As for the other smaller triangles, it took me a bit to figure out what I wanted to put there. I didn’t even think of adding the vehicles until two days ago but I’m so glad I did. I don’t really have my own take on the mascot version of the Doodler (yet?) so I borrowed the design from one of the stickers in their merch shop. Teeny was terrifying as just a front facing head so I made him cute again.

In the outer circles, I put what I felt was the most significant quotes for each family. I really wanted to use “It’s okay to be angry, it’s not okay to be cruel” but it was just a little too long.

I just posted a little anecdote about Henry Wilson and it reminded me of how much Edmonds hated him. He just had an incredible beef with Wilson that lasted well after the war and even after Wilson's assassination. Edmonds devoted more than a few pages of his war memoirs to just flat out insulting Wilson, mentioning early on how he vowed to never say Wilson's name and only refer to him as "that fellow".

Edmonds was friends with Charles Calwell, who was commissioned to write Wilson's biography after his death.

I met Calwell and remarked that he had “gone and done it”; for the extracts from “that fellow’s” diary which he had quoted completely have his hero away; as they exhibited an entire lack of military judgement and appreciation, a gift for always being wrong in his forecasts, a capacity for mean intrigue, and for prejudice in his estimate of individuals.

[Wilson was] "un faux bonhomme", without any military talent or intellectual equipment, or educated intelligence, who was invariably wrong in his forecasts, with an infinite capacity for mischief, not a man, an inhuman figure, calculating, callous, without a single generous sentiment or kind word.

He was as General Sir William Butler said, “One of the panteloons in putties and harlequins in helmets”; but he was also the evil genius of Sir John French and of Lloyd George, and the malicious slanderer of many a good officer. I asked an eminent Greenjacket how such a fellow could have been tolerated in the Rifle Brigade (in which he had served in his younger years.) The answer was, “he was so ugly and so amusing.”

This is hardly an explanation of his career. There was certainly something sinister in the way that by a hidden hand he was put into a good regiment, after failing to obtain entrance to Woolwich or Sandhurst; was given a nomination for the Staff College; was pushed into “Intelligence” without linguistic or other qualification; was appointed commandant of the Staff College; was DMO and I., and was CIGS, being given another and better appointment after each failure.

For Edmonds he epitomised everything that was wrong with the older elements of the British Army and was the face of unwarranted patronage. And boy, what a face.
