Summary: You and Lizzie have been keep your relationship a secret for the past years until the secret got revealed, ON AIR.

A/n: Hello peeps! I'm back with some more fluff with Lizzie! So, happy reading!

"Babe, how do I look?" Lizzie walks in as she twirls a little to present you with her look for tonight's interview with Jimmy Fallon.

"Wow, darling. You look so gorgeous." Her beauty stunned you. All the wait for a few hours was worth it to see her blushing and smiling at you in that outfit.

"Really? This look, is it simple enough and not too much? What if people have negative comments about it? There will be a lot of people there, in Jimmy's show." Worried sounds in her ramble as she asks. Nervousness is written all over her face.

You grab her by her shoulders. "Sstt.. Liz, Liz. You look great and you will do amazing there. Just take a deep breath, think about a happy place or whatever that makes you happy. Also, I'll be waiting at the lounge in the building next door, I'm five minutes away from you. Okay?" You try to calm her down as you rub her upper arms up and down gently. Then you give a quick kiss on her forehead.

She nods. Your touch soothes her and takes her away from her anxiety. "I will think about you. You are my happy place." Her green eyes sparkling with comfort when she looks at you as she speaks.

"Aaw. That's sweet, Liz. So are you to me."

"Are you really okay to wait for me there, y/n? You can just come with me and wait backstage." Lizzie proposes another idea.

"Yeah. Yeah. I'm okay. If I wait backstage, people will question it and it will draw attention, sweetie." You give her your reason as your response.

You and Lizzie have been dating secretly for a year and a half now. Lizzie isn't ready to tell the world about it since it's her first relationship with a woman. Nobody knows except family and close friends. She thinks that if the media knows, it will draw a lot of attention and too much for her social anxiety. You totally understand that. Both of you have kept it sealed pretty well that fans think that you are best friends, well…most of them.

Even though there are rumors about you and Lizzie, they don’t cause any ripples to your relationship. You both met as casts in the same movie three years ago, since then you both are inseparable.

“Alright babe, just call me when you are ready for me to pick you up. Good luck, you’ll do great! When you are on air, tell Jimmy I say Hi.” You laugh a little as you are joking. “Haha. You know that he will ask about us if I tell him that.” Lizzie rolls her eyes playfully shortly before she kisses your lips then gets out of the car.

“Alright everybody, please welcome the woman who plays Wanda Maximoff, The Scarlet Witch, the one and only, Elizabeth Olsen! Give her applause!” Jimmy calls her name in excitement as he claps his hands. Audiences instantly stand up and cheer loudly with such hype that overlap with clapping sounds. Lizzie walks into the set and gives a cute small wave to the audience as she walks closer to where Jimmy sits. The talk show host welcomes her with a hug.

Slowly silence starts to fill the set and it’s the cue for Jimmy to talk with Lizzie. “How are you, Lizzie? Good to see you again here.”

Lizzie patches her best smile, draws a subtle deep breath. “I’m good. I’m great actually. Thank you for having me back here. Good to see you and everybody here.” The blonde glanced at the audience and it was enough to make them cheer for her once more.

“Congratulations, I heard your book was a success. They are everywhere now. My kids love them. It’s a great book.” Jimmy’s compliment makes Lizzie smile in gratitude.

“Thank you so much. I was actually excited and nervous but I’m glad that it got very fantastic responses. The whole process from beginning until the launch day was a very fun, interesting and unforgettable moment. I got a lot of support from family, friends and people who are very close to me.”

“Aww that’s really awesome. It’s always nice to know that you have somebody who always supports you.” Jimmy replies in agreement.

“Oh yeah, most definitely. I remember the first time ever I told somebody about this book idea. It was Y/n Y/L/N. She was very supportive and was there for me at every step.” Lizzie’s green eyes sparked in elation. The corner of her eyes crinkled from the wide smile she gets once you popped in her mind as speaks.

“Y/n Y/l/n? As THE Y/n, your co-star in your upcoming movie?" The man asks and looks at her with a knowing smile.

Your girlfriend laughs a little then she nods. "Yes, yes that y/n."

"Oouuh…" The audience responds in unison.

As much as Jimmy really wants to talk about Lizzie and you, he tries to focus on the next topic.

"Oh okay and speaking of your upcoming movieee… How did it go and how do you feel about it?" Jimmy pitches another question to her.

"It was a long filming with a lot of different locations, also I had to do a bunch of flying scenes so there were a lot of wires and strings involved but I'm glad that everything went great! The closer to the premier date the more excited I get. This is my third movie with y/n and it has been really fun to work and spend time with her." Lizzie looks a little nervous and she tries to calm herself down by fidgeting with her ring on her ring finger but her smile is still there. Her brain is multitasking by now between focusing on the interview and thinking about you to help her with her anxiety. Her cheeks turn a little rosie color as she continues to speak highly of you.

Jimmy looks at her and listens to every word she says. He leans a little on his desk, slowly nods at her.

“Y/n has been super sweet and lovely to me since the first time we met.”

“And you met her at the movie set like three years ago, right?”

“Yeah. Yeah. We met at the movie set. It was early in the morning and she came up to me with two cups of coffee in her hands then introduced herself to me but she said she needs my help to grab which coffee that I like so she can shake my hand.” Lizzie can’t help herself to tell the story of how you met her and a cute little laugh slipped out of her.

“So she brought two different coffees in her hands for you and introduced herself to you? Did you actually already know who she is?” Jimmy asks.

“Yeah, one of them just plain coffee and the other one with light cream and light sugar. It was really cute actually and Y-yeah. I know her. I mean, we never met before but I watch almost every movie she is in. She is a great actress.Then we talk more whenever we can on the set. We exchanged numbers. Since then we talk and text on a daily basis. Sometimes we hang out together or with our mutual friends.” Praises and her fond memories of you flows easily out of her smiling red lips.

“Sounds like both of you are really close.” Jimmy shares his thoughts after listening to her answers and some audiences say “Yes..yesss” at the same time.

“Yes, we are.” The Marvel actress admits.

“So has she met your family or maybe your twin sisters?” Jimmy asks slowly to see how she would react to it.

“Well, she met the twins at some events a few times but I think it was Christmas two years ago, which means that was like two months after we became official, I introduced her to my parents and the family.” And just like that, Jimmy’s eyes are rounded, his mouth is slightly open in shock. The audience starts to cheer right after the words “official” and the dark haired man says “Wait..wait..wait..” He politely expresses his surprise to Lizzie and raises his hands a little as his sign to ask the audience to let him talk. Meanwhile, Lizzie looks genuinely confused with what is going on right now. She keeps her smile as she looks back and forth between the host and the audience.

As soon as the crowd calms down, Jimmy proceeds with his curiosity. “Wait. Okay.. Okay. Hold on right there, Lizzie. Didn’t you say that you and Y/n became official?”

Jimmy’s question makes her realize what she just said and she takes her turn looking as shocked as he was. She covers her panic with her iconic laugh while her hand covers her mouth. She shifts her sitting position nervously. “Wait, did I say that? Oh my gosh.” She asks herself innocently and loud enough that instantly brings out laughter from Jimmy and the fans.

“You did. You did. You can’t back out now, Lizzie. Come on, spill the beans.” Jimmy still shows how thrilled he is with the accidental revelation. Little do you know, Lizzie has been thinking that she is ready to share the good news about both of you dating. She plans to tell you this weekend. So this fortuitous confession doesn't really bother her. She perhaps got caught off guard by her own serendipitous divulgence but that's all.

She lets out her soothing contagious laugh, her cheeks slowly turning crimson. “Well, uh–okay. Since the cat is out of the bag, I will answer this specific question. Yes, Y/n and I are together. We have been together for a year and a half now and we are very very happy.” She proclaimed. The blonde laughs once again even deep down her anxiety creeps up slowly but the audience’s exhilarated reaction gives her the reassurance she needs, that people are okay with the news.

She fiddles with her ring again to quickly remind her of you and your smile.

“Wow! This is really unexpected and great news! I meant, all of us have been wondering about you and y/n. Dating or just friends. But we are happy that you are happy.” Jimmy expressed.

“Thank you. I’m sure if Y/n is here now, she will be all laughing because I accidentally spilled the tea.” Lizzie joked followed by her giggle.

“Well, where is she now?" Jimmy questions as he looks around and checks if you are around or backstage. “She is actually waiting for me at the lounge next door.” she stated.

“Oh! She’s five minutes away. I got an idea! Can we call her from here and ask her a question or two? Can we do that?” Jimmy looks at the actress then his gaze moves to the producer to ask both of them for their approval.

He gets the green light from the producer. “What do you say, Lizzie? Is she gonna get upset with our surprise?” He waits for her answer.

“Oh, she won’t get mad. It takes a lot for her to get upset and that’s what I adore from her so much. She will find it funny. So yeah, I can call her.” Lizzie confirms. “Okay, uh everybody needs to keep quiet so she can talk to her. Go ahead, Liz. Whenever you are ready.” Jimmy tries to hold his laugh after he requests some silence. With that, everybody went hushed.

Lizzie turns on the speaker phone. The dialing tone is the only sound that fills the studio. By the third tone, your voice is made to be heard as you answer the call. “Hi love.” Lizzie’s effort to hold her laugh mixed with her nervousness, falters her words. “Liz? Hello? Are you there?” You answer her one more time to check if she is there.

“Hello babe. Y-yeah. I’m here.”

“How did it go? Do you want me to pick you up now?” Your voice sounds clear from the other end of the line. You hear her laugh and like usual and it always makes you laugh too. “What’s so funny?” You wait for her answer.

Jimmy still gives sign language to tell everybody to keep it quiet. “Uh actually, I’m not done yet. I’m still with Jimmy right now.”

“Wait, what? Hold on, I’m confused. You are with JImmy but the interview is over or still on going?” You laugh despite the confusion you have in mind. "It's still going on. He asked me to call you."

"Well, hello there y/n! How dare you keep a secret from me this whole time!" Jimmy hinted. He 

starts talking to you and lets out his joke then people start to laugh and clap.

"Oh hi Jimmy! Secret? What secret?" You start to think if this is about you and Lizzie but you ask anyway.

“Uh well, babe. Actually, he already knows. I accidentally told him in the interview.” Lizzie slowly tells you what happened followed with a little laugh.

“Oh?” That was all you said then this time you laugh the hardest thinking it was actually really funny. “Yes, y/n. I know. You both are great secret keepers.” Jimmy teases in a sing-song tone..

“Well, in my defense, I’m just following what the queen wants.” You return his tease jokingly.

“Oooh, she’s your queen?”

“Yes, she is, Jimmy.” You answer and you hear people react in awe all at once.

“What do you love most about her? Things that make you fall for her.” Jimmy sneaks a question for you. “I will be very cliche but I will say, everything. Everything about her that makes me fall for her. But mostly is her smile, her laughter and her big heart. She is the sweetest and the kindest person I know.” You answer him with nothing but the truth.

Meanwhile Lizzie, as she is holding her phone, she can’t stop smiling from everything you just said. “Awww, that is so sweet.” Your girlfriend reacts to your answer as her other hand try to fan herself

“It is.. Wow, y/n y/ln, I never thought you were such a romantic person. So, back to you, Lizzie. Same questions.”

“Well, like I said earlier, I really adore her patience. I feel like she is the only person I know that will almost never get angry or upset. She is very funny and always makes me laugh. She is a great listener and a very supportive girlfriend. I love her for everything she is.” Her eyes twinkled, her cheeks blush and her heart sends direct order to her face to patch the warmest smile with the thought of you. The sound of the applause exhilarates her feelings.

“Oh my god. You two make a very cute couple. We are really really glad that we finally get the answer about what's been going on between you two for years. Once again congratulations. Lizzie, y/n, I’m gonna have to talk to my producer so we can have another interview with both of you. Lizzie, thank you for coming and Y/n thank you for answering your girlfriend’s call and talking with us here. We’ll see you both soon.”

“Thank you for having us here, Jimmy.” Lizzie responds politely. With that, she also ends the call with you and you take that as your cue that it’s time to pick her up.

You see her talking with the makeup artist. Hearing her laughter really makes you smile. You walk closer to her back and you gently tap her shoulder. She turns around and instantly smile at you.

"Hi!" Without waiting a single second, she hugs you right away. You return her hug and give a kiss on her cheek. "Hi, love." You pull back a little to look at her gorgeous green eyes.

"Y/n, I'm so sorry. It was an accident, I was thinking about you because my anxiety started to bother me. Then I didn't realize what I was saying about us became official–" Your girlfriend rambled with rows of explanations and guilt.

"Liz, it's okay. I don't mind if people know about us. I'm just worried about you. How are you feeling after what happened? You okay?"

"Yeah, I'm okay. I'm happy that finally people know about us. I was actually going to tell you that I'm ready and should let the media know about us." Her soft voice made its way to your ears. You are very content to hear that your girlfriend wants people to know about your relationship. Joy bubbles up in you, warmth wraps your heart.

"Really? That's great to hear, Liz. Well, at least no more sneaking around behind the paparazzi." Both of you giggle from what you just said. You hug her once more before you say more.

"Let’s go home. Ready?" You whispered and smiled.

Lizzie's warm hand takes yours and her head nods at the same time. Both of you are ready to go, walking towards the exit. Lizzie and you know that there will be a bunch of fans and paparazzi waiting outside.

As soon as you both walk out of the building, there are quite a lot of fans cheering and calling Lizzie’s name and they are surprised that you are there too, holding hands with Lizzie. They sound a lot more excited after they see both of you.

Your girlfriend stops her steps and waves at them. Flashes from cameras keep popping like fireworks. Before both of you proceed to walk further, you hear her call your name. As soon as you turn your head, Lizzie gives a quick peck on your lips that quickly curves a smile for her. “Now, I can kiss you whenever and wherever I want.” She whispers. You can’t help yourself, let out a little laugh. Then both of you walk further to the valet service to get your car.

Although people find out about your relationship in a funny unexpected way, both of you are relieved and happy about it because both of you always wanted the world to know how much you love each other.

you were late but you were finally seeing hamilton for the first time after years of it being on stage. your friend got tickets and asked if you wanted to come with. you agreed as you wanted to know what the hype was about. you walked to the seats with your friend and sat down. eventually a man sat next to you and you overheard him talking to his friends.

“every time i come back here it’s like im checking in on my kid at college”

you paid it no mind and looked through the playbill. you scanned through the pages and looked at the credits.

“lin, you want something? im getting a snack”

“im good thanks”

you turned your head and looked at him, that is lin.

lin turned to you and said hello.

you said hello back and pointed to his name in the playbill.

“yup that’s me”

“how ironic that on my first time seeing hamilton i sit next to you”

“how ironic that on my 701st time seeing hamilton i sit next to you” lin responds

you laugh.

“are your expectations low or high?”

“high of course, how does it feel to know that everyone just raves over your work?”

“it’s a great feeling. i hope you find the hype worth it”

the show starts and you both silence your phones.

in the first minute of the show you’re absolutely hooked. lin looks at you and giggles to himself at your reactions. by the time satisfied comes around you’re amazed and when nonstop happens just before intermission, you’re wondering why you haven’t seen it sooner.

the lights come on at intermission and lin turns to you.

“well… what do you think?

you make a face showing you’re absolutely amazed.

“are you telling me that YOU made this?”

he gets shy and nods

“there’s no way this can get even better”

“you’ll have to find out”

“i can’t wait”

your friend notices lin as well and speaks to him for a quick moment before she goes to the ladies room.

you notice people staring at you and then realize they’re actually staring at lin. people start to go up to him and ask him for pictures.

as a joke, he tells one of the people to have you take the picture.

“your girlfriend is beautiful” one of them say.

“thank you, but-”

“can you believe she’s been my girlfriend for years and hasn’t seen hamilton once?”

he says this in an obviously sarcastic way that makes you laugh but others gasp.

“i’m just late to the game girl” you say

the intermission is almost over and you settle back into your seats.

“what’s your name?”

“y/n”

he does a little rhyme with your name

“yeah there’s no doubt you made this”

you enjoy the rest of the show and tear up at the end. you look at lin and just nod, “you’re a genius”

he laughs, “nah”

the crowd gives a standing ovation and disperses.

“do you and your friend wanna take a picture on the stage?”

“yes we’d love to!”

lin tells you both to follow him as he leads you backstage. while you walk you have small talk and you think to yourself how nice humble and cute he is.

while walking you see the actors and wave, to your suprise lin introduces you to them and jokes that you’re his girlfriend of years but quickly explains what just happened during intermission.

he takes pictures of you and your friend on the stage and then you tell him to get in the picture. you lightly lean your head onto his shoulder

before you get ready to leave, lin hands you his phone. he seems nervous.

“if you ever want to see the show again or see another show or do whatever i’m always around”

you blush and type your number into his phone. “will do”

You sigh and toss your phone aside, collapsing back against the couch cushions. What is wrong with men these days? Does no one know how to hold a proper conversation anymore? All you want is someone who understands you and at least pretends to be interested in what you have to say. But, apparently, asking for a guy who doesn’t blabber on and on about himself for hours is too much. 

You look over to Jongho, your best friend, who is currently sprawled out on the extended part of the couch and watching his new drama of choice. You wait a moment, expecting him to ask about what’s bothering you, but he never even looks away from the screen. You sigh again, more dramatically this time. Finally, he gives in with a roll of his eyes and pauses his show. 

“What is it this time? That Yeonjun guy boring you already?” 

Happy he’s indulging you, you grin and move closer to him, positioning yourself so that your head is on his lap. His fingers immediately find your hair, playing with it as you rant. 

“Yes! I am so tired of the guys on these dating apps; either they have no personality or are totally obsessed with themselves. I should just give up and go hook up with someone.” 

“Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. I thought you swore off meaningless sex because you finally wanted a real relationship?” 

“Ugh, don’t remind me.” You look up at him through your lashes and pout. “Maybe I’m just not meant for love. What’s all the hype for anyway? Most of the time, it just ends up with someone’s heart being broken.” 

Jongho pretends to shiver. “Is your heart made of ice or something? Why are you so cold?”

You scoff and swat at his chest. “Hey, I’m not that bad. But, seriously, is it even worth it? Love and all that?”

“I don’t know,” Jongho muses, letting your hair drop from his fingers and just resting his hand atop your head. “It hurts.”

“What?” 

“Loving someone who doesn’t love you back. Love in general, I guess.”

You quirk an eyebrow. “Oh? And what would Mr. Chronically Single know about all of that?” 

He looks down at you, eyes dark with an emotion you can’t decipher. He almost looks… pained for some reason, and it makes your heart hurt. You instinctively go to reach out to him but, next thing you know, he smoothes out his expression and gently pushes you off of his lap.

“Forget it,” he says, pressing play on the remote. “I want to finish this episode.” 

“Oh. Right, sorry.” 

You return to the opposite side of the couch, curling in on yourself. The room suddenly feels suffocating, so you grab your phone again and make plans with a friend to go to a club. Jongho barely acknowledges you as you leave, and you can’t help but feel guilty without knowing why.

HELLO IRL FRIEND OF NICO

i have noticed that you are into discworld and would like to hear more about it bc i am interested in reading it but am incapable of getting into anything unless it's been hyped up to me enough and you seem like you'd be willing to ramble lovingly about this series so uhh. favorite characters? what's it about? themes? fun tidbits?

(no pressure though and sorry if this is a weird way to introduce myself hi im luce)

lol no worries Luce! yes I'm very happy to ramble for you. (post-writing here, this is so all over the place sorry for like not sticking to one area but hey it's defos a loving ramble - kinda just talked about vague stuff, but I can 100% go into specifics).

So. . . where do I begin?

40 books in the series, he wrote right up until his death. NOT a continuous plotline through all 40. In fact, I recommend not starting with the first one (two actually)as it's not spectacular (that being said, it is still worth reading once you're in the series, good for the overall worldbuilding if memory serves). below is a sorta ok guide to how they connect - I have my issues with it but it's the best I've found.

I wouldn't recommend starting with Sourcery, but that's cuz Rincewind isn't my favorite character - I'd start with either equal rites or Lords and Ladies or Mort or The Truth or The Fifth Elephant or just wherever really as long as it isn't the Colour of Magic or the Light Fantastic.

A few crucial ordering things - READ THUD AND SNUFF (and ig Making Money and Going Postal) BEFORE RAISING STEAM. READ THIEF OF TIME BEFORE NIGHT WATCH. Those are the really imperative ones that you gotta order right, generally do it vaguely chronologically and yeah. Have at it.

The Hedgehog Song - this is a tidbit that shows up a lot in the Witches books as a very rude song that Nanny Ogg sings, BUT WE NEVER GET THE WORDS and I so want them.

Because it was written over 32 years, there are so many characters that just like slowly worm their way into it and I love watching a character turn from like a single footnote into a fully-fledged, important-to-the-plot character (I'm looking at YOU, Cassanunda)

SPEAKING OF FOOTNOTES OMG the books are riddled with them and. . . chef's kiss they add So Much to the series. They're so funny.

Pratchett is actually just like so funny as an author in general, but wittily so. Not saying he does pure comedy - he doesn't. Many a time have I cried over a Pratchett book. He's also great at taking stuff and . . . twisting it ig into something brilliantly new - Take, for instance, Maskerade, which is the Phantom of the Opera but Pratchettifyed (New word! yay! I'll be using it a lot I'm sure.). or like just what he does with Fairy Tales in general (Witches Abroad, Lords and Ladies sorta)

Also his MAGIC omg - soft magic system done right. I also love like the different approaches to magic that the witches and wizard have to it. Also how like the Creatures from the Dungeon Dimensions get [spoilers removed]

The gods man. Love them. They exist, they feed off of raw belief (Small Gods' premise is that people start believing in the institution formed around a god as opposed to the god itself and then that god like almost dies cuz no-one believes in him. (surprise surprise it's a commentary on the Church)) and they play games with the lives of men (the Last Hero). Love Granny Weatherwax's opinion on them which goes smthn like this: "No use believin' in 'em, it only serves to encourage 'em." <-- As a concept belief is not simply tied to the gods either. He does a lot of stuff about how what people believe to be true can affect how they perceive things around them.

THE FOOLS. Pratchett understood the tragedy of clowns and as such his fools are so insanely sad - the Fools' Guild is the least happy of all the guilds. I love them so much

Speaking of guilds: the Guild of Thieves. is a legit guild set up by Vetenarii to do crime to the socially acceptable level and no higher - I'm doing a bad job explaining it but it's ingenious.

Vetenarii is probably one of my favorite characters in the entire series. He, above all else, understands how humans work and he uses that skill to get people to do what he wants.

Pratchett does not pull the punches when it comes to messaging and such - very anti-war, anti-racism, anti-sexism etc. Also love what he does with People and how they can/can't be controlled (The human condition as a whole ig) - one of my fav quotes from the series is Vimes saying "They're scared. You can't expect much from people when they're scared."

My personal fav book is Monstrous Regiment, which is relatively standalone. Very good. Very "horrors of war"-y with a touch of the classic [redacted due to spoilers].

it’s not everyday you find yourself at the crimson lion kings base, even with your husband leading the brigade you don’t come by his office much. he was always so busy with his captain duties and you, busy with your own missions and team but dropping by every once in a while was always worth the trip, even if slightly unplanned. you returned back much earlier than anticipated from your latest mission and needing to be on this side of town for a follow up with julius, it was the perfect chance to stop by and say hello to fuegoleon and the other crimson lion magic knights.

the spacious hallways with tall vaulted ceilings and godly pictures of lions and other previous captains are all empty though, not a single magic knight in sight or to be heard. your boots tapping against the floor is the only noise coming from this palace as you make your way to fuegoleons office.

you only make it half way there before the quiet is suddenly distrubed as the roar of a few dozen knights or more fills the air and shakes the walls around. you can easily pick fuegos voice out as one of them, hyping up his team and its working rather well by the sound- volume of it. you chuckle to yourself, heading towards the noisy knights.

red caped knights are pouring out of the conference room once you arrive, many greeting you as you stand to the side awaiting your husband. “lady y/n, it’s good to see you!” “good afternoon lady y/n.” “what do we owe the pleasure, lady vermillion?” you reply with a smile and many “good to see you as well”s before you finally hear the voice you’ve been waiting for.

“hello darling,” fuegoleon says as he approaches you, purple eyes lighting up once they scan your body and come back up to meet your e/c eyes. “it’s wonderful to see you back from your mission so soon and not a single scratch on you by the looks of it.” he leans down, pressing a soft kiss to the top of your head, his large hand coming to rest on the lower middle of your back. “that’s my girl,” he whispers against your hair and kisses the top of your head once more.

he knows he doesn’t need to worry when you’re off on a mission; you’re strong, capable, smart and all of those qualities are shared with your squad mates but he can’t help it. the thought of you coming home injured or worse always gets the best of him, anything could happen. but each time you come home okay and it’s a relief beyond words.

pink rises to your cheeks at his words, you always loved the sound of that. his girl.

his hand doesn’t leave you lower back as you walk through the hallway side by side, nodding and giving hellos at passing knights. this is the crimson lion kings base you’re used to when you come by, strong willed and curious knights always meandering throughout the hallway and preparing for some kind of missions together. newer knights less familiar with you eyeing you curiously as you walk and talk casually with your husband- their fearless leader.

you come to a halt at the hallways leading towards the front door, fuegoleon lifts a thin red eyebrow at your sudden stop.

“i just came by to say hello since i got back so early. i’ll let you get back to work. i can see myself out,” you smile sweetly up at him, placing a hand on his chest as you lean up on your toes to kiss his cheek. you don’t bother looking to see if other knights are around before you do. yes, your husband has appearances to keep and prefers to show his admiration for you through his actions in private but it’s subtle enough you’re sure he won’t mind.

and he doesn’t, not one bit. “thank you for stopping by, beautiful,” he replies in a hushed tone, warm breath brushing against your cheek as he speaks.

you hum in response, coming back down on your heels. cold air hits your lower back where his hand no longer rests as he turns from you to walk to his office.

your next move is a split second choice, you don’t see or hear anyone around and fuego is right there, his butt right there just begging to be smacked. you reel your hand back, taking a quick step toward him and just as quickly bring your hand down, your palm crashing onto solid muscles.

the step he was taking stops right before his foot hits the ground, for a moment it’s like he’s short circuited on you but it only lasts 0.05 seconds before he turns around, a small smirk curling his lips upwards that only grows wider when he sees the cheeky, bright smile on your own face. he’s always been amused with your antics.

the crimson king is fast, instantly checking to be sure none of his subordinates are around before lunging towards you, throwing you effortlessly over his shoulder and turning right back around to go to his office as if nothing happened, with you now in tow.

you squeal at the sudden movements and kick your feet lightly in a half assed protest. “fuego! put me down!” you giggle.

“no can do darling,” he answers playfully, his strong arm flexing under your middle as he holds onto your securely, using his other hand to unlock and open the door to his office.

as soon as the door of his office is shut and locked behind him, his hand comes crashing down to your ass cheek, the smacking sound echoing in his ear. he half expected another squeak to come from you, he wasn’t full strength smacking your ass but it wasn’t gentle either, though he wouldn’t do it if he knew you couldn’t handle it but he didn’t expect to hear a light, almost incoherent moan escape from your pretty lips.

he makes his way to the large ash colored desk in his office, gently lowering you onto your back on the desk, not caring about the papers getting crumpled underneath you. he looks at you through violet eyes filled with adoration and love, as if you’re the most beautiful thing he’s ever seen, ever touched and truthfully to him, you are.

So This is 2023 and What Have I Watched (& Played)

Hello Internet, it’s Medea once again doing her usual schtick. 2023 was definitely a…year! Yeah, I don’t see 2023 as anything worth while as 2024 is the year that’s going to cause a lot of havoc in my book. I’m hitting another old bitch milestone and I’m not digging it if you get my drift. But in terms of anime, there was no shortage of exciting moments. We’ve been introduced to new gems like Frieren, Skip & Loafer, and Oshi no Ko. Saw the satisfying conclusions to Attack on Titan. Surprise returns like Rurouni Kenshin! And of course, the best thing to happen in anime. Tracey Sketchit spoke for the first time in 16 ½ years.

YES, THAT’S VERY IMPORTANT TO ME!

Okay, let’s talk about the other crap that wasn’t as important as Tracey Sketchit. Per usual, I will give special acknowledgement for certain anime and games with these special categories. And I don’t discriminate in the year these animes and games were released, just as long as I watched or played it this year. So, if something was released in 2021, it totally counts here. Let’s hit it!

First Fandom of 2023: Oshi no Ko

Yeah, I’ve given this a lot of thought. I realize that this anime didn’t release until April 2023. Nothing against the animes I watched in the winter months, but the second I watched Oshi no Ko, I literally forgot what I watched in an instant. I think there was a Tokyo Revengers sequel and an anime about a tomboy girl. Like most of the internet, I was hooked because of the 82-minute premier. I was so enamored that I wanted to recommend this anime even though just one episode had just aired. It even got me to start reading manga again to see what happens next. I’m just glad Kinokuniya had several volumes. Oshi no Ko shows us the dark side to the entertainment industry in Japan. If you’re an idol and get married and have babies, it’s all over for your career. If you’re a child actor, things might not go well for you once you grow up. Social media can kill! This series seems to open up the conversation of how fans hold their favorite personalities to different standards and it can get all kinds of toxic from that.

Favorite Main Character of 2023: Liko from Pokemon Horizons

Look at that, a Pokemon main character I really like. Yeah, I’ve more often than not have given my blah feelings for Ash Ketchum and Red throughout the years. Despite my thoughts on those two, I was very conflicted when it came to Pokemon ending Ash and Pikachu’s adventure. But when they introduced Liko and Roy in that same breath, it gave me a little bit of optimism for the franchise. How often do we ever get an actual female lead in Pokemon? But does she live up to the hype? That’s for you to decide. My opinion is always janky at best. Liko was barely a day in a new school with her first pokemon before her world is turned upside-down with a shady group after her, a mysterious pokemon appearing to her inside of her pendant, and joining an explorer group where Crispin Freeman plays the leader. Liko, seems to handle herself really well considering all that just went down. Every week, I feel as though she’s improving, gaining more confidence, and ready to take on this lore that we’re learning more and more as the story progresses.

Favorite Villain of 2023: Kanoko, Kaya, and Shinichi Saimori from My Happy Marriage

I’ve made myself perfectly clear that when it comes to this category, I may hate the particular villain but will put them on this category if they’re truly evil enough. These three family members are that special category of rotten. Imagine you’re the main character and you have your father, step-mother, and step-sister treating you like a slave. That’s just layer one to the Saimori family. Miyo Saimori has lived this hell for nearly her whole life due to the fact that she doesn’t have supernatural powers like the rest of the family. Her actual father shunned her because of that fact. Her step-mother, Kanoko destroyed everything that belonged to Miyo’s birth mother and that brought Miyo comfort. And Kaya made it her mission to just destroy any shred of happiness Miyo comes across.

Now, you would think leaving the Saimori property at the end of episode 1 and getting engaged to someone would have ended the Saimori hell. No, it didn’t. Papa Saimori is still doing some shady dealings behind the scenes. And when Kanoko and Kaya learned that Miyo was happy living with Lord Kudou, they took it upon themselves to kidnap Miyo off the street, hold her captive in a shack, and beat her until she gives up her happiness with Kiyoka. I know at this point it felt like it was adding more fuel to the shock-value fire and in many ways, it was overkill. I’ll admit, it was. And I still hate these people. I know I should hate Eren Yeager more or Tetta Kisaki or even that guy who harmed Ai Hoshino. But this is my 2023 choice and I can’t see anyone else top…

Favorite Video Game Character of 2023: Bowser

From what? Nearly anything this year. And any other year for that matter! Every now and then, I will enjoy the shenanigans from that giant green lizard. Take your pick. Super Mario Wonder and RPG came out this year giving us some fun moments. Particularly with RPG where he kisses Mario, has nearly the best expressions of the game, and just proves to be the best bad-ass. Hell, even replaying some of my older titles from SNES and some Switch titles like Golf and Mario Party, he’s still the life of the party. And let’s not forget his big screen debut where Jack Black does the role justice. I knew he was going to be the best part of that film. Was I right? Fuck to the yeah, I was.

Favorite Game of 2023: …

I’ve had an interesting year when it comes to playing games. Earlier this year, I hit the nostalgia button by going backwards in game consoles. For several months, I found myself playing the following Pokemon games; Emerald, Platinum, HeartGold, and Black. Don’t judge, every now and then I will want this nostalgia where I play old Pokemon games while blasting some jazz music that used to play on the Weather Channel. Don’t we all? I know what you must be thinking.

But Medea, why those games? The window for getting event pokemon has closed eons ago. And unless you’re a genius with tools, you can’t change the clock battery on those GBA games.

Yeah, I know and don’t care. Emerald has the best pokemon and OST. Platinum and Black were guilty pleasures. And HeartGold, nay EVERY gen 2 game is my favorite!

It wasn’t until the middle of the year where I ventured onto a franchise I never played before and had fun with two of their games. One of them was released this year and the other was released in 2021. My favorite is the latter.

Story of Seasons – Pioneers of Olive Town

Yes, I love A Wonderful Life. I just happened to really like the other one just a smidge better. I think it’s because I feel like I have more time in Olive Town than Forgotten Valley. AWL has only 10 days a month while POOT has 28. Imagine what I learned after 40 days and you’re in the new year. That’s a death I’m still not over. I think it’s also because of some of the game mechanics and things you can do and get that kinda won me over. There’s a little more freedom when it comes to planting and animal care in Olive Town that I think I’ve come to appreciate a little more.

So…yeah. That’s my one not 2023 mention in this entry.

Final note for this entry: Iori is best boy of POOT and Nami is best everything in AWL.

Favorite Het Couple of 2023: Sylphiette x Rudeus Greyrat from Mushoku Tensei

Spoiler warning for this entry. Skip ahead if you’re not currently caught up with Mushoku Tensei. This is your only warning.

Never mind the spoilers of Rudeus’s love life and all of the drama that went down last season between him and Eris. This here was my OTP. I was a supporter of this from the get-go and in a preliminary move, called Eris a bitchy she-beast that Rudeus would never have interest in. Ha! Silly 2021 Medea and her silly thoughts. Well, time makes fools of us all and we wound up watching Rudeus get ditched. After that, he makes a detour at Lake Flaccid. A wonderful limbo where all you can do is play with two deflated blue balls. I am making absolutely no sense here, am I?

During the limp dick arc, Rudeus enters a magic academy where he meets a certain student that ended up reigniting that fire in his pants he sorely needed. Confusingly, though. Yeah, Rudy-boy thought for a second that he fell for another boy. But what Rudeus doesn’t know is that this is a girl and not just any girl, IT’S SYLPH! I and I’m pretty sure a multitude of fans were screaming at the top of their lungs every time these two were together during an episode. Yes, I just love seeing these two together after so many years away from each other. But Rudeus doesn’t know that’s her and Sylph is staying quiet. Eventually, these two officially reunite and Sylph even goes the extra mile to cure Rudeus’s erectile dysfunction. And after a night of passion and dick-curing, they’re engaged. I don’t care how disgustingly fucked it was to get to this point, a win is a win.

Favorite Yuri Couple of 2023: Hime Shiraki x Mitsuki Yano from Yuri is my Job!

It’s in the title. Was it my favorite ship of the year? Far from it. It’s just that this was the only Yuri couple I saw this year and, well, if the category fits. Plus, I’m not supporting the other ship that came from this title. Mitsuki and Yano were good friends years ago. But there was a falling out from them due to a misunderstanding. Now they’re in high school and they end up meeting each other again under strange circumstances. They are both employed at a café that’s heavy into acting like a Yuri-based, high school manga. Seriously, this is literally lesbian Ouran here. I’m glad these two are becoming friends again. Will it evolve into something more? Mitsuki’s blushing is a good indicator.

Favorite Yaoi Couple of 2023: Shuumei Sasaki x Yoshikazu Miyano from Sasaki to Miyano

Hey, two years in a row! Yeah, Sasaki to Miyano returned again this year with a movie. And just like last time, I was filled with the bubblies watching them again. Everyone was excited for the return of this wholesome couple, especially Crunchyroll and Kinokuniya. Probably to market the anime and manga, I guess! I have to give this story a lot of credit here as there’s talk of others accepting Sasaki and Miyano’s relationship for what it is including their friends, classmates, and even family members. Let’s not forget that while there are anime out there with gay couples, Japan (the country these stories come out of) are not too liberal about that. While not as extreme as places like Russia or Saudi Arabia, they’re also not cool with it like the U.S.

Fandom That You Didn’t Expect to Get Into: Pokemon Horizons

Yes, like everyone else who was attached to the original Pokemon anime, I was skeptical about this direction we were taking. The story of Ash and Pikachu was being retired and all of the characters and their pokemon we’ve all grown to love over the past 25 years were no longer going to be featured week to week. At least I got to see my baby Tracey one more time.

Moving onto Horizons, it was a nice change of pace to see new characters, a different kind of adventure that doesn’t revolve around winning gym badges, following not just Liko and Roy but older characters like Mollie and Friede, new villains not affiliated with Team Rocket, and a female heroine. Yes, I know Roy is there but…come on, she’s the first person we meet. We meet like six other main characters before Roy! There is so much mystery and intrigue when it comes to nearly every character on this show that I really wish Ash and his companions got more fleshed out during their time. Well, that’s why we have fanfics.

Fandom That Made An Unexpected Comeback: Rurouni Kenshin

Did I expect a return of this 1990s classic? No, but I will happily take it. ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM ASIDE! Yes, I’m not going to sit here and deny what the creator of Rurouni Kenshin did. I really thought he deserved a harsher punishment than what he got, but that’s life unfortunately. And don’t cast stones that I’m watching something made by a convicted cum-bucket. Most of you will still sit there and watch the old episodes of Rick and Morty or Ren and Stimpy and those creators did horrendous things too. You ain’t squeaky clean!

Moving on! When executed correctly, a reboot can capture the audience of old and new fans. First of all, the animation is stupendous. They’re done by the same studio that did Tokyo Revengers and Cells at Work: Code Black. The music is wonderful, especially the opening and ending themes. And best of all, they’re sticking to the manga adaptation compared to the original series. No disrespect to the original, but you all have to admit that after the Kyoto arc, it all went straight to Hell. Especially after Studio Deen took over! As of this date, I’m hoping for a second season, for people to not cast judgement on the people who work on this (creator excluded), and that the series continues to go in this positive direction.

Fandom That Inspired the Most Crack: The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You

Every week watching this anime, I am mouth-on-the-floor. Is this another one of those borderline-hentai series that I’ve been throwing on this list every other year. No, it’s a harem. But not just any other harem anime. In the same year as Rent-A-Girlfriend’s 3rd season and in the same fucking anime season as the second season to Girlfriend, Girlfriend, we get an anime of a boy who is pre-destined to have 100 girlfriends. No fucking shit, 100 girlfriends! Rentaro has blown both Kazuya and Naoya out of the water and onto some jagged rocks.

Obviously, we’re not going to get the full 100 girlfriends any time soon. Hell, the season will probably end at 13 episodes with the same number we’re at as I’m writing this (which is 5). Still more than Naoya and Kazuya. Rentaro’s girlfriends consist of a curvaceous pink-haired girl with vivid sexual fantasies, a blonde tsundere with a flat-chest, a petite girl who communicates through a book on her phone, a girl we’re pretty sure she’s not a robot despite her name being Nano Eiai, and a confusing cluster-fuck that loves drugs and can change from a loli to a Tits-Mcgee in seconds. And all 5 end up doing more than just kissing and holding hands. ARE WE REALLY SURE THIS ISN’T A HENTAI?!

There’s also a vice principal that French kisses any student that runs down the halls and is voiced by Orochimaru.

Last Fandom of 2023: Tokyo Revengers – Tenjiku Arc

I know I started Tokyo Revengers at the beginning of the year. But I kept going back and forth with liking it and thinking it’s okay. Probably because of Hakkai’s family drama that did it. Or maybe the disappointment I felt when the Christmas Massacre felt like a fizzle once Mikey came in and ended Taiju’s career with one kick to the head. But then I was told to wait until this arc when shit does indeed go down.

Yeah, they’re right. I’ve been at the edge of my seat for a lot of this season. Yes, it is very clear that Takemichi is the underdog, the crybaby, the physically weakest member of the Tokyo Manji gang. His record shows that in nearly every fight up to this point. But he stands his ground against all odds and over 300 grunts Izana and Kisaki can throw at him. I’ve often referred to Takemichi as Homer Simpson in the episode “The Homer They Fall”. You can punch him, kick him, and even shoot him in the foot. He’s still standing. And it’s not easy when the top men of Toman are out of commission due to death in the family or got severely injured. It’s a shame every week I’m enjoying myself so much that as soon as I start hearing, “SAY MY NAME” I get pissed. And then I jam out because once again, the ED theme is a banger.

1. everything everywhere all at once bc i am the eldest gay daughter to asian immigrant parents and let me tell u . i walked out of that theater with all of my makeup transferred to the inside of my mask and None of it left on my face from the sheer force of my tears. idk it is just so special to me it Gets Me i have never felt so seen and i have never ever cried so hard at a movie before and it’s just one of those movies that permanently changed the chemistry of my brain (+mitski in the soundtrack ! hello !) i need to rewatch it so bad actually

2. ratatouille! idk what to say about this one it’s just so nostalgic and such a comfort movie and i could watch it a billion times for the rest of my life and never get bored! the vibes the ambiance the bittersweet ending idk it just is so 🫂🫂🫂🫂 to me just the embodiment of a hug

3. the empire strikes back is also one of the most comfort movies of all time for me !! and IDK i don’t rewatch star wars as much as i should probably because there are so many movies and i get overwhelmed so i’ve seen the others like once or twice each, maybe a few more for a new hope but esb i’ve watched like. a million times EASY. just everything about it!! the iconic ice planet hoth opening and the hanleia moments and everything about luke in this movie is so top tier. such a classic feel and watching it feels like the equivalent of a warm mug of tea for my brain. just also feeling very star wars today so that might be playing into a bit but this movie is just mwah chefs kiss for Me

4. ok this is definitely on here because i just watched it and have been thinking about it nonstop since but i FINALLY !! watched it (2017) (and also the sequel but whatever .) and i can like Feel the neurons in my brain rearranging themselves i get it i get the hype i understand why my mutuals are going crazy all the time i get why people have not shut up about it since it came out I GET IT OK ! Art of Ducktales Review: Just Ducky

Hello everyone and welcome to an extra crunchy bonus review, as I take a look at something you knew I was going to get eventually but thanks to mom telling me I wasn't getting it for christmas, I bought way sooner than expected: The Art of Ducktales, the art book released just last week from Dark Horse, containing interviews with tons of the crew, mostly Matt and Frank as you'd expect, behind the scenes art, and more good stuff. It was 50 bucks for the standard version but was it worth it? Join me to find out This was something I was jazzed for and for good reason: My love of ducktales is well documetented on this blog having covered the major arcs for season, all of season 3 and some assorted episodes. And i'm not really slowing down as I have a Gizmoduck arc planned for sometime next year (whenever Kev wants to do it), and a review of "last Christmas!" in just a few weeks. While I plan to still pace myself I do want to have reviewed EVERY episode at some point. Ducktales was everything I coudl've hoped for, more and then more AFTER THAT, an expertly crafted show spread over three wonderful seasons that should've gotten a fourth. What we got was still great though, so naturally a book honoring that, especially from disney who RARELY makes merch for older fans of their DTVA shows, and one that's sales could impact us getting one for Owl House, was like catnip. The fact that it was written and put together by Ken Plume, the same great dude who put together the awesome Art of Venture Bros that I still use reguarly for my Venture Bros retrospective was just the cherry on top So did it live up to the hype? Welll... yes and no. The bad news is while I HOPED for some content about what episodes could've been, some new factoids about the characters already.. there wasn't much of that. What we have gotten through tumblr (and Kev sending me posts) has mostly been thorugh the supplemental book that came with the deluxe edition I didn't buy because it was 80 dollary doos. I was already pushing my budget getting this. From that we did find out Hortense and Quackmore are still alive and living on Grandma Duck's farm.. but...

Like... did they meet the kids before Della came back? Why would they go along with Donald's lies? why did they never try to patch the donald and scrooge riff?

What is their relationship with the kids? How would they react to Webby, both pre and post revelation about her being a clone now and the two of her just a hangin around donald adopted? how would they treat Daisy? why are they on a farm? These are questions we fans can answer and i'll have fun doing so, this book reignited my passion and writins for the show so I might just do that, but it's stil baffling to just drop that bomb and not fill it Out matt, and especailly in the delxue edition. We also get conformation it was Matt who clearly missed the queer subtext with Webby and Lena as not only does it never come up but he outright calls them "friends who are sisters". Maybe he dosen't care some fans ship them? maybe it's his interpretation? I dunno and as one of the co creators it's fair for him to interpret it that way.. in a sense

All in good fun of course. I do respect Matt. But I also expect my right to disagree. Anyways, we don't get any new blistering insights into the world itself. But it's MORE than made up for. While this book lacks in what we coudl've had it's a really GORGEOUS celebration of what we did get. For starters we get a LOT of in depth info on the creation of the show, it's themes, and I gained a new respect for a guy I didn't even really know existed, Seam Jimenz who was the shows art director. The stuff he pulled off for the show, the tone he set and everything he and his crew were amazing. A lot of the book is he or other people on the show detailing how they pulled off shit that came off efortless to me and making me love the show even more. From blocking an episode in an enclosed place for Last Crash of the Sunchaser, to how they ONLY used fog for Missing Links of Morshire or the castle eps as a stylistic choice, to the little bits of comic fuz you see in every background there's a lot of cool details. We also get lots of great art, from the protype designs of the kids, to Lena's own evolution, to various concept art for characters. There were a lot of good designs before the awesome ones we landed on. We also get art of incidental stuff like the posters from Terror of the Terra Firmians, the very gay cake from Night on Killmotor hill, the darkwing first darkness poster.. if your a hardcore fan of thes how like I am there's a LOT to love here. So in short, as this is a fairly short review if you love hearing the people who made this show fantastic talk about how they pulled that offf, character stuff, episode ideas and other neat little stuff, this is for you. if your hoping for more of the show.. this sadly isn't it.. but maybe it'll get us more. Either way it's a great insight into the beautiful found family this show created that gave us one of my faviorite shows of the last decade. Woo-Ooo!a

Favorite Song From Each Country! Part 17/37: Germany!

Why hello everyone! I managed to make a post today after all! I'm glad for that because my sister's high school graduation was today so what's a better way to end a day than to talk to you guys about Germany? Until 2021, they were the last of the Big 5 to have won Eurovision. After that, it seems like they've been cursed...but even so, they've brought some entries to the table (and even managed a top 5 in 2018!) that were good in some people's opinions! So, let's get to mine!

Favorite Entry: So, you just won Eurovision. Your winning song just got super popular, and now you're hosting the next contest. What's a better choice to try and defend your trophy than...sending your winning artist again? That's what Germany did with Lena in 2011, and her song that year "Taken By A Stranger" is my favorite German entry. And let me say, THIS is how you return to the contest after a win (or even a good finish). The song is such a contrast to her song "Satellite" in 2010, which I feel shows Lena's range as an artist in only 2 songs (which if you want to send me more of her songs I'll do my best to find time to listen to them...same with any other artist I mention). Also, as an unwritten rule, any song that sounds mysterious is a great song in my book. Story songs? Yes. It just felt made for me! *Side note: it was one of the first Eurovision songs I used to announce a new post! Thoughts on 2023 Entry: You know what? I don't care that I wasn't huge on this song. I don't care that this genre of rock isn't my genre of rock (if that makes any sense). Take my opinion and throw it in the trash. HOW DID THIS FINISH LAST? It had the hype behind it. Lord Of The Lost is ESTABLISHED (I mean, who else would tour with Iron Maiden right after Eurovision?). In hindsight, Germany made a good choice sending this song. There were songs that *in my opinion* were worse. AND IT STILL FINISHED LAST. HOW? I mean, the risk they took because rock should be a little more appreciated should have been worth it. And that's why I said that Germany must be cursed. I would also like to note that I find it so wholesome that they would post their competitor's songs in the days counting down to the contest (and yes, I shared Sudden Lights and Luke Black when I saw them!). Last of my Trans Rights Readathon reviews!! “The Wicked Bargain” by Gabe Cole Novoa

(Strap in everyone, this is going to be a long one! Not only did I have a lot of thoughts on this, but it was somewhat an excuse for one of my hyperfixs to make a cameo. I don’t think I’ve had a 2K word review since The Dragon’s Promise?!)

Hello, Tumblrians! This wraps up my fifth and final review of my Trans Rights Readathon reads!! This one in particular might’ve been anticipated by y’all, as I’d mentioned both looking forward to it and listening to it on Audible for weeks. This particular review will be covering The Wicked Bargain by Gabe Cole Novoa!

I feel this is the only one with a worthwhile Book Discovery Backstory(or whatever fucking name I’ve used before), to be honest: I haven’t shared on here, despite it being the platform to do so (this is just a bookish account for now and I’ve yet to post art outside of that), but I’ve been an Our Flag Means Death fan for about a year now! I’ve gotten attached to the characters, especially a select few, and consequently, I followed a good chunk of the actors on Instagram. For reference, Jim’s my favorite (although my other top three are Oluwande and Jackie, as a sidenote), so I follow their actor, Vico Ortiz, on Instagram! Turns out they do voiceover work, particularly with audiobook narration(which I found out about in November but only remembered beginning of this year?), and they made a story post in January or so that was day 2 of them recording in the studio the narration for this book. The next day they actually made a video dropping the title of it, and I rushed to go check it out! It’s absolutely delightful, reading a gay pirate book narrated by my favorite from the gay pirate show. (Even if I suck ass with staying focused with audiobooks and as a result also had to have a hard copy on hand lmao. I haven’t listened to one since my seventh grade art teacher played all three audiobooks for The Hunger Games. Sidenote, who decided those were for kids?! They’re terrifying!) Despite that being the main reason I got into the book and knew about it in the first place, somehow I ended up forgetting it was actually real and not just something I’d gaslit myself into believing until a week or two until the release date💀

(No but seriously though I followed Gabe Cole Novoa’s Instagram and regularly commented under his updates, I had grown into a certified actual TWB fan between February and when I actually read it in March😭)

So yeah! The more you know, haha. Sorry about the long rant, and also to my dear friend who may be reading this and who I have ranted about my fictional crushes enough times that he can recognize some of them (including the aforementioned) by just pronoun, based on context alone.

BUT YEAH! So the ultimate question: was this book worth the hype? Not just from me, personally, but for most of Tik Tok and some of the bookish Crew folks who’d caught on to its existence? My final verdict? Yes, yes it was. It was an absolute blast of a book.

Ok, onto my actual review now! This is already plenty long, and we haven’t even talked about the plot.

The Wicked Bargain follows (newly) 16 year-old Mar León De La Rosa, a Latine nonbinary (transmasculine) teen working alongside their father on the ship he’s captaining(and became notorious for), La Catalina. (It’s worth mentioning that this book takes place somewhere in the beginnings of the Golden Age Of Piracy, I think the exact year the story starts is legitimately 1717?) On the night of their sixteenth birthday, however, El Diablo comes to claim their father’s soul because of a deal he made with him when Mar was born, then killing everyone else on La Catalina except for him and Mar. Mar has to find a way to get him back before it’s too late, having to learn to hone their own magical abilities (fire and ice elemental stuff!) if they have any hopes of successfully defeating El Diablo, and finding a new home in the ship, La Ana, that saved them from drowning at sea. (Of course, there’s other notable characters: like my personal favorite, a gender-fluid demonio named Dami with somewhat questionable morals, and the son of La Ana’s captain, Bas, who Mar much to their dismay ends up falling for.)

(Sidenote: premise for this sounds sick as fuck, right?! There’s so much plot going on though that it’s taken me five tries to correctly condense and explain it to my friends. Five! Like..go to the Goodreads page, you’ll see what I mean. I legit needed to take a breather the first time I went ahead and read the blurb back in January ‘cause it’s a mouthful.) (I’ve noticed that the bullet-point explanation/“tagging” format used by a few Bookstagrammers works in their favor this time because they can just use a couple quotes, include “found family”, “magic”, “gay pirates” and “a deal with the devil” and call it a day.)

So as you can tell, plot-wise, this book is packed. There’s some other details and aspects I left out because it would be spoiler-y to include them, which can be overwhelming for a few (especially given on how long it takes for Mar to pick things up and start throwing baddies around, yeah it takes a while for them to actually be comfortable with using their abilities)(this does not work within the time constraints of the deal and every time it would mention weeks going by and the moon phases changing I’d be like “oh no”)! It took a bit of getting used to on my part, but it keeps things moving along and it ties into the swashbuckling part of it all (see: pirates, haha). This does not work in the ending’s favor, however, because it ended very quickly to the point where it felt a little abrupt. 

I really liked the cast of characters! (I think ensemble casts are starting to grow on me a bit.) A lot of them were so much fun, the obvious favorite being Dami. While a few of their schemes got…convoluted (especially in the last act, but that was kinda mandatory for it to work), I absolutely ate up their moral ambiguity and their banter with Mar. This book also had a solid villain, too! (And an interesting pick as well, being that it’s..the literal devil lmao.) El Diablo got a kickass introduction, cementing him as a threat and a force to be reckoned with in the story’s plot, and he remained menacing throughout basically the entire book. I enjoyed that a lot, he’s probably one of the more solid YA villains I’ve read about! (Even if I have a few questions about his identity at the end. We don’t have a spoiler section for this review, so I’m keeping things vague at that?) As for the non-villainous/morally gray characters I liked, Bas, although he got a horrible first impression with Mar, remained a fun character to bounce off of them. (“Them” singular, I mean bouncing off of Mar lol.) Eventually, when the romance between Bas and Mar was introduced into the plot, I actually liked it and thought that there was a gradual shift in Mar’s opinion of him rather than a total 180 just to make it work(maybe it was because the drag from listening to this and it taking me four times as long to read, though, that made me think it wasn’t rushed). (LMK what you guys think in the comments!) 

To wrap up my discussion on the other characters, Tito got mentioned only a few times I think, but he was one of my favorites too. He was just really sweet, I liked how caring he was towards Mar (especially during the point of the book when they were terrified after being discovered by him) and I appreciate fictional dudes like that. I missed him when Mar and Bas were the centerpieces of the second act and not the La Ana crew as a whole, because it meant there wasn’t any more time to be spent with him :(

Anyhow! Now, Mar themselves. They’re in emotional pain for a lot of the book, and have a sizable amount of trauma attributed to their magic(which is just called the Spanish word for it, magía, here). That prevents them from seeking out solutions related to that. I get it. But damn I was SO annoyed at them for just. Making things drag out?! Literally half of the book would’ve never happened had they just realized they had these super powerful abilities at their disposal!! The one time that Dami tried to get them to use their abilities was kinda convoluted (did the rest of the crew seriously have to be involved, too?!)(and by involved I just mean endangered bro), but their reasoning was understandable imo. When they were frustrated at Mar for their hesitance I was too oh my gods. (Seriously though, when Dami was basically about to pull their hair out because of anger and stress, I was too, and started full-on laughing because it was basically my reaction. I felt seen by that! Sigh.) Anyhow. That issue aside, I loved their characterization as a transmasc non-binary protagonist. I related heavily to their feelings of gender dysphoria, and appreciated as a Spanish learner that the La Catalina crew (and some other folks who knew about Mar not being a boy but non-binary) added the “e” ending to their Spanish when referring to them. Also, little bit of a personal note but I thought it was interesting how they presented really masculine and were alright with “boy” being used as a descriptor for themselves sometimes; a lot of non-binary rep is kept strictly androgynous(well, particularly in television because books are more diverse I noticed), and as a non-binary person who also identifies as gender-fluid and uses male/masculine labels occasionally, this was yet another facet of their gender identity I connected with :). 

(Additional thoughts on the nonbinary representation: I appreciated having this be in a story within the historical fiction genre, because although yes, the characters aren’t real, there’s still that acknowledgement that queerness has always been around. It especially helped to have that be told through the Latine lense that Gabe Cole Novoa wrote it in, because in non-European/white cultures, it’s been an integral part of them but got erased by colonialism. Colonization was semi-frequently mentioned in this book, due to Mar’s cultural background, so that was a point of complexity that was brought up along with it. I’m glad that got to be highlighted here, it’s a layer of queer history typically not talked/written about in mainstream narratives because they're mostly white-centered.)

Magic system I’m a little on-the-fence about, to be honest, because we have some idea of how the strain on Mar limits their usage of it and it ties into the plot(I liked the added detail of them having to use their magic every 2 or so weeks because it would build up!), but they also get pretty powerful with little to no training and I wish the book was a bit longer so we could get more time to develop that. And, as the paragraph on Mar’s characterization gave away, we didn’t get a ton of action scenes involving magic! It stilted its development, sadly, and kinda led to the sudden influx of power in the quick ending. (I was expecting Dami to try to train them a little more! I guess that didn’t happen. Maybe it could, in a version of the story where there were a few more pages and the pacing was a little less clunky towards the last act.)

Ok, in conclusion! I loved TWB a lot. (That’s the acronym that Gabe Cole Novoa uses in regards to it, and I picked up on that because it’s fun! It’s like talking about something with a dedicated fandom.) Even though it didn’t get the highest rating of my Trans Rights Readathon books due to the pacing hindering it a little, I think I enjoyed it the most out of all of them (maybe I’m a bit biased though, see the Book Discovery Backstory). Mar, Dami and Bas have stuck with me for weeks after I initially read about them on-page in March, I still have my hold receipt for my library copy(which I had to return, sad face) stored away in a tiny box in my room, and I’ll be reading anything Gabe Cole Novoa publishes from here on out :).

hello, i've been catching up with your blog, i'm glad anons are back on so we can talk to you again! i have a couple of thoughts on the various things from the past few days

i love taylor's outfit and her make-up so so so much. i was iffy on the hair at first, but ig that's just bc her hair hasn't been styled like that in a while and it was like a shock at first

i will never understand why people think they need to be in the pit so so so bad. i was at one of the harry shows last week, me and my friends were all the way up in the nosebleeds and we had an amazing time.

speaking of harry, i have always liked his music and thought he was an ok dude, but i really just despise his fans. every single one of them seems to have a parasocial relationship with him??? the fact that everytime he dates someone they tear them apart, or that they literally follow him around on tour??? the point of artists touring is so that they are coming to you and you DON'T have to fly across the country to follow him? and they're all like "yea i'm broke but it's ok it's for harry" like no.

i agree the dress and hair are amazing but the hair was iffy for me... i wish she kinda did something more interesting but i think she wanted to keep it simple because the dress has so much going on so i can understand why she did it. maybe if she included some of the diamonds in her hair as well it would feel more cohesive.

yeah i don't get the hype around pit either. i get claustrophobic (i found that out while i was literally at the pit of a show and was like 'wow im about to have a panic attack lets bolt' lol). i saw a tik tok of someone in the 300 section and the top comment was like 'are concerts even worth going to at that point with those seats'. it's insane the entitlement people have. like yes?? because you're at a concert??

yeah his fans are making a rapid rise in intolerability. they treat everyone, including other harry fans in the pit of shows and all his gfs he's ever had, terribly... all while having 'treat people with kindness' tattooed on them lol

ANYWAY EMETKOTO YES so. K'oto is a terrible cook. just the absolute worst ever if it was possible to burn water he would do it but also his standards for food are so low he will burn something to a crisp then just. eat it anyway so him cooking for emet-selch is kind of out of the question gjkgsfd....for a while emet-selch never even ate in front of him (hes immortal and has no need to since his body is "borrowed" and he can maintain it magically) so it wouldnt have been worth the trouble anyway but maybe once starts doing it to make k'oto happy he would consider trying to learn to cook a bit better so he could experience the joy of making his partner something and watching them eat and enjoy it...🥺❤️💜

emet-selch tho is a great cook most on account of being 15,000 years old and also the most powerful sorcerer in history he can just snap his fingers and make stuff and he's pretty damn good at it! One would think not eating for a couple hundred/thousand years would make you forget what is good food but he's still got it :) or maybe he doesn't idk like I said k'otos standards are very low for food. but when he finally starts sitting down to eat with him he likes his own food and hes a picky bitch so it's gotta be good enough!

At some point k'oto definitely asks if they can try cooking together without any magic bc it's romantic and emet huffs and puffs and complains about it as usual but also does it anyway bc he secretly thinks it sounds nice and it is really nice!! he guides k'otos hands to help him chop things up and shows him how to read recipes and ingredient portions and even though he gets annoyed occasionally k'otos having such a good time and smiling and laughing so much it makes the moments where he gets in his way so much he has to teleport him across the room worth it <3 especially when they plate everything up and sit down together and get to try it....it tastes better than it probably is bc it was made with love 💜❤️

No i'll never stop talking about emet-selch starting to eat and sleep and bathe normally without magic with k'oto . it's about regaining humanity thought long lost for the sake of love!!!!!
