In the Middle of the Night

Summary: Alex comes home grief stricken in the middle of the night and wants to hold his wife and daughters as tightly as he can.

It was late when Alex got home. The only one to greet him at the door was Reeses. The pup was a shadow in the dark house, but his eyes glimmered with excitement. Recess’ collar jingled as he wiggled his but. Alex dropped his bags with a sigh, but smiled at the warm greeting. He kneel down and buried his hands in Reeses’ ears, giving him a good heads scratch. 

“Hey buddy, I’m happy to see you too,” Alex said, letting himself smile as Reeses panted happily. “I'm guessing our girls are asleep, yeah?”

Reeses didn't respond but when Alex gave him one last pet, he quickly ran back upstairs to the girls. Alex hesitated to follow him as he picked up his bag again and put it on the seat in the mudroom. He could unload it tomorrow as he had the day off. He did grab his phone though and put it on the bench as he changed. He stripped off his clothes, like they had done since covid and changed into the fresh pair of pajamas Jo had left in the dryer for him. He pulled on the shirt and breathed in the little bit of her scent that had mixed in with it. Yet, it was a pale comparison to the real thing. 

Alex put his phone in his pocket as he went to the kitchen. There wasn't much left of dinner and he had eaten at the hospital. Still he still grabbed a few bites of the chicken Jo had made. Then he went in search of his girls as he walked upstairs. Alex needed them tonight. 

He stopped by the nursery first as he heard their sound machine going and the star lights twinkling on the ceiling. Both of the girls were in Luna's bed. They always ended up sharing the same bed. He didn't know why they had separate beds on different sides of the room, but they did occasionally nap separately. Alex fell to his knees in front of them and carefully wrapped his arms around them. He needed to hold them in his arms, but he tried not to disturb their sleep. He kissed both of their heads and closed his eyes as he held them. 

They were alive and breathing and they were happy and healthy. But the sound of the crying children still rang in his ears. 

He lingered in the nursery holding them, watching them sleep, and thanking god that they were alive and that they were his to come home too. He held them both and traced the slope of Luna’s nose and Helean’s large forehead. They were so little, still had their baby features. He wanted them to stay like this forever. 

He looked up when he heard Reeses’ whine at the door. He gave the girls one last little squeeze, kissing both of their foreheads before tucking the blanket around them. They will be safe sleeping here tonight. He needed his wife now. 

Alex sneaked out of the nursery and gave the girls one last look before he closed the door. Reeses whined at the door to their bedroom as Alex quietly opened the food to the master bedroom. Recess trotted in and jumped up on the bed, turning around a few times before he settled next to her. Jo was asleep on his side of the bed, curled up, but relaxed as she snored. 

He instantly smiled as he saw her and let out a sigh of relief. Then he crawled up into the bed and carefully tried to hold her as he wrapped his arms around her. He wanted to hold her; he needed to. Alex was desperate to have her in his arms again and to know that she was his. That his wife was alive and well. 

Then he heard the screams of a mother who will never hold her child again and he thought about Jo. 

He hoped he would never hear her make that sound. He would do anything to make sure of that. Jo woke up as he squeezed her, perhaps too tightly, she stopped snoring and looked up at him. 

“Alex what happened?” Jo whispered as she turned in his arms and he pulled her into his chest, but she wrapped her arms around him as well and let him hold her as tightly as he needed to. 

“Who did you lose?” Jo asked, although she doesn't need to know the answer.

Alex closed his eyes, trying not to picture it in his mind. When he opened them, he saw his wife in front of him. He traces the details on her cheek, her nose and her lips, pink and full. He signed as he heard the echo of the screaming mother.

“A 16-month-old baby. It was a car crash. They came in and we tried everything, but, but… The mother was in the room with us. She wouldn't let go of her baby. I could hear her…” Alex trailed off, his voice breaking a little bit as he shared the grief with her.

“Helena is 16 months old,” Jo whispered, pulling him in again and letting him hug her.

“I just kept thinking about her and Luna, then before we could do anything, the mom collapsed and she died too. She had a pulmonary embolism, but it seems like her heart just gave out, as if losing her baby was just….”

“I'm here,” Jo said, pulling back, holding his face in both of her hands as she looked into his eyes. “I'm here, I'm alive, I'm safe, and so are the girls.”

“I know,” Alex whispered, believing it, but his heart still broke for his patient. 

He pulled her into his arms again, he just needed to hold her. They laid back down in the bed, but he sat up, with his back against the headboard and pulled her into his arms. Jo laid her head on his chest and stared up at him for a while. She traced gentle patterns in his chest and it helped him focus on her. But she grew tired and closed her eyes again as she yawned.

“Go back to sleep, Jo.”

“What about you? You should get some rest too.”

“I don't think I can right now.”

Jo just nodded, pulling him in to kiss her for the first time as he lingers on her warm lips. He wouldn't sleep for a while, he couldn't until the memories had faded away. Jo fell asleep easily, especially in his arms. She drifted off with a little smile as he held her. Alex stared at his wife, looking at all of the little details of her face. The baby hairs that fell on her pink cheeks and her eyelashes that fluttered as she dreamed. Her lips that open and shut with each snore, and her large forehead that Helena had inherited.

A few minutes later a little voice calls to him. “Daddy?” 

Alex hadn’t heard them come in, as he was so focused on Jo. But Luna stood next to him at their bedside, clutching her little white bear close to her chest. Helena was next to her, half asleep but holding her sister's hand as she sucked on her pacifier, she was probably there for emotional support.

“What's wrong baby?” Alex asked he reached out to her with his free hand he's laying down next to Jo now and he backed them into the pile. 

“I wanna hold you,” Luna said, as she crawled up on the bed, pulling Helena with her.

“Okay, baby come here,” ALex said as he moved to lay down with Jo next to him. 

Helena crawled in next to Jo and tucked herself against her mama. She’s out like a light the second she laid down and Jo sleeps through the whole thing. Luna crawls over Jo and he pickles her up and holds her against his chest as Luna hugs him.

“I'm right here little moon, daddy's got you,” Alex promised her as he gave her a little squeeze and kissed her forehead, reassuring her that she was safe in his arms. 

Alex holds his family tight. He's got one arm around Jo, his hand holding Helena's hand, with his other arm around Luna.  Even Reeses joins in and moves to curl up on his legs. His girls sleep peacefully with Alex holding them. He was reminded of when he held the girls when they were babies, they loved contact naps and he would hold them all night. 

He stared at his girls, until the Sun started to come up and its golden rays came in through the window. Alex closed his eyes as sleep finally started to overtake him. When he does, he sees his wife and daughter’s faces in his mind as he falls asleep and Alex knows he'll be okay.

Relationship status: literally just found out that the guy I’ve been hardcore crushing on for nearly a year is dating a good friend of mine (neither of them knew I like him). I’ll get over it, but yeah, single and currently hating it.

Favorite color: red most of the time. I also like darker yellows.

Last song I listened to: The two girls at a sleepover I’m returning home from were listening to heavy metal and T Swift respectively, but the last song I listened to of my own will was Nocturne No. 2 in E Flat Major (Chopin) which I like to listen to at bedtime.

Top three shows: It changes a lot but right now I would say Orphan Black, Grey’s Anatomy, and… Parks and Rec maybe? The third used to be Once Upon A Time, but that season finale….yikes.

Summary: Jo and Alex get snowed in and are stuck at their house with the kids. They make the best of it and build a snowman.

Alex came back a few minutes later, bringing her a cup of coffee before he walked over to stare out the windows.

“It's snowing pretty heavily,” Alex said as Jo looked up to see the large flakes falling added to the three inches of snow they already had in their backyard. The snowfall just kept coming this week. 

“Uh oh, you should probably go check the roads,” Jo said, biting her lip as she watched the snow fall.

“Yeah, I'll go check,” Alex said as he quickly walked over to the front of the house and Jo turned her head to watch him leave. He stepped over the baby gate, rather than just opening it as Jo rolled her eyes and shook her head, but he carried on. She heard the sound of the front door opening as Luna and Helena immediately picked up their heads.

“It's just Daddy checking the road,” Jo said, although both of them stopped playing and went over to the baby gate to stare at him.

“Daddy, that's a lot of snow,” Luna said, pointing ahead of them, although Jo couldn't see it from her angle on the couch.

“Yes it is,” Alex said as he came back and shook the snow off of his hair. “I think we'll still be able to make it out of the driveway.”

“Are you sure it's really bad,” Jo said as she looked back at the snow falling in the backyard. “There's several inches of snow and there's probably a lot of ice from last night when it froze over.”

“Yeah, the road looks okay,” Alex said with a shrug, pulling out his phone probably to check the weather. “We've got to at least try. We promised Meredith we'd be at her place for dinner tonight.”

“I want to see Scout,” Luna insisted, looking between them.

“Yeah, me too, I wanna play with Diana,” Helena said as she added to her sister although Alex just rubbed the top of their heads messing up the hair, more than it was from sleeping.

“Don't worry guys I'm sure we'll be able to make it out. Daddy grew up in Iowa, I used to drive on ice all the time,” Alex said with a confident smile although Jo wasn't so sure.

“Alex you can't be serious,” Jo said as she followed him into the mud room. 

“It's just a little snow Jo, I've seen way more snow than this when I lived in Iowa,” Alex said as he sat down on the bench in the mudroom and pulled on his boots. 

“It's not just a little snow, it's four inches now! And we don't live in Iowa, Alex, we live in Seattle which has hills and only one fucking snow plow which has not cleared our street yet,” Jo said as she put her hands on her hips and glared at him.

“Relax Jo, I'll be fine. it's not even the first time I've driven in the snow here in Seattle.” Alex said as he finished putting up on his boots and went to grab his coat before Jo snatched it.

“I don't like it Alex, It’s not safe,” Jo said as she clutched his coat.

“Let’s just try and see if I can get the car on the road,” Alex said, crossing his arms as he glared at her in return. 

“Can't we just stay here, Meredith will understand if we can’t make it. Please, for the sake of your wife and kids,” Jo said with a pout and pleading eyes. “There's no reason for you to go out and you could get hurt. You crashed your car last year when you went out in the snow.” 

“Jo,” Alex said, reaching out to put his hands on her shoulders. “That was when I was trying to go down the hill to get to work and I didn't even crash, I just slid a little bit.”

“You slid into another car!” Jo said, her voice getting a little higher as she shouted before realizing her tone and letting out a breath. “I just don't want the same thing or worse to happen to you.”

“I know that scared you, it scared me too, but it was a large hill, and I probably shouldn't have tried to take that road anyway, the hills around us are barely even a story high and not very steep. I know what I'm doing and I'll be okay, I promise.” 

“Fine,” Jo said with a sigh knowing that nothing she said could persuade him as she twisted her rings.

Jo stood on the front porch, holding Edith with Luna and Helena next to her. They watched as Alex skidded in the snow just trying to pull out of the driveway. He had been able to back out, but the second he hit the road the tires just rolled. They weren't going anywhere on the sheet of ice that was the road in front of them. 

“Alex, Alex!” Jo waved her hand trying to get his attention as he paused and looked over at her.

She just motioned for him to bring the car back and she saw Alex visibly sigh in the driver seat. He hung his head and carefully drove to get the car back into the driveway.  Alex came running back out as Luna jumped up and raced over to meet him. 

‘I’m ready to go,’ Luna signed she ran past him and pulled on the passenger side door.

‘Sorry little Moon,’ Alex said as he went over to her, taking her hand as he let her back to Jo and her sisters who had stayed on the porch. 

“It looks like we've been snowed in,” Jo said, watching the snow continue to fall, making the roads even worse. 

“Yep,” Alex said with a sigh, yet he smiled as he looked over at both of the girls. “But that just means we have more time to play in the snow!”

“Yay! Both of the girls cheered, jumping up and down. Luna immediately raced off to get into the snow on the front lawn but Alex's hand held her back.

“Hold on, let's go get some proper snow gear and then we can play, otherwise you'll get all wet,” Alex said as he tugged the girl's hand to go inside Luna pouted but reluctantly followed him in.

“I think Edith and I will just stay inside,” Jo said as they got in and she relished the warmth of the house.”

“Oh come on, you aren't going to come out and have a snowball fight with us,” Alex said with a smirk raising his eyebrows and trying to entice her. 

“I don't know about that,” Jo said, rolling her eyes. “But I guess we could go play in the snow. What do you think, Edith?” 

Jo looked down at the baby in her car seat Edith kicked up her legs and threw her arms around as she cooed in excitement. They all went back into the mud room and Alex pulled out the big tote of their snow gear. 

“Alright Karevs, let's get ready to go play in the snow,” Alex said, pulling out the snow pants, gloves, and stuff. 

The girls cheered and eagerly followed him to get into their snow pants. Soon enough, all of them were bundled up warm as Jo finished tying a scarf around Luna’s as she wiggled. 

“She doesn't really need a scarf,” Alex said as he zipped up Edith into her snowsuit before putting a hat on the baby’s head and pulling up her coat hood.

“Yes she does, I want my girls to be nice and warm,” Jo said with a smile as Luna smiled back.

“I think you're a little overprotective of them,” Alex said with a small smile, although he meant it sincerely.

“Perhaps,” Jo said with a shrug. “But better to be overprotective than under protective.”

“Mama, I can’t walk,” Helena said as she tried to teeter on her legs and her snowsuit. before promptly falling forward although she caught herself on her arms. 

“You okay there princess?” Alex said going over and picking her up. 

“I can’t walk!” Helena insisted more forcefully this time as Alex put her back on her feet. 

“Don't worry kiddo it'll get easier once we're out in the snow,” Jo said as Alex unzipped Helena’s snow pants to give her a bit of wiggle room. 

“Jo, is she wearing two pairs of pants under here?” Alex said, peeking into her snow pants.

“It'll keep her warm,” Jo protested, defending her over-dressing of the girls.

‘I’m hot,’ Luna protested as Alex gave her a look.

“You won't be hot when we step outside, ready to go?’ Jo signed to her before getting up and pulling on her own snow coat over a sweater and probably two more layers. 

Both of the girls looked up at her and so did Alex. They were all three bundled up from head to toe and snowsuits, underpants, mittens, hats, and scarves. Even Reeses was bundled up in a snow jacket, sweater, shoes, and a hat that Jo had somehow managed to get to stay on the top of his head. 

“Why don’t we take off a layer so Helena can walk and we'll go out for a few minutes. If anyone gets cold, we’ll come back in and add the layer back,” Alex said and signed looking over at the girls and Jo.

“Okay,” both of the girls easily agreed as Edith nodded along with her sisters.

Although he was pointedly looking over at Jo as she huffed and sighed. “Okay.” 

After they all shed a layer of clothes and Helena could walk they all went out to the backyard. Reeses bounded ahead of them into the snow. He went snout first into the snow as he bounded around the backyard. The girls quickly chased after him with giggles of excitement. 

Jo smiled as she looked out at the perfect snow covered backyard. Alex handed Edith to her as Jo put her on her hip and he ran to chase after the girls. He was just as excited to play in the snow. Before long he flopped down and laid in the snow as he helped the girls create snow angels. Jo decided to walk out into the snow going over to where Alex and the girls were before she sank down to her knees and put Edith on her lap. The baby instantly reached out to grab the snow with her hands although she only managed to scoop up a few flakes as it slipped off her mittens. 

“What are they doing?” Jo asked as Alex and the girls smiled up at her. 

“We’re making snow angels, Mama,” Helena said as she giggled.

Edith giggled as she watched them and tried to scoop up some more snow, bringing it up to her mouth as she bit into it. Her eyes went wide as the snow melted on her tongue, but she reached for more. 

“Yucky Edith,” Jo said, sticking out her tongue and shaking her head.

Although Helena had already caught her doing it and followed her baby sister. She reached down to grab a bite of snow and brought it up to her mouth. 

“No, don't eat it, Helena,” Jo said with a laugh, trying to push the snow out of her hands.

“I like it,” Helena protested as she reached to grab more snow.

“Alex grab her!” Jo said pointing at her daughter.

Although he just laughed and shrugged his shoulders. “What's the point of playing in the snow if you can't eat a little bit of it?”

“Alexander,” Jo said glaring at him and shaking his head although she had to fight back the urge to giggle alongside him.

“Alright, girls don't eat so much snow, but if you do, stay away from the yellow and brown snow where Reeses has done his business,” Alex said, looking pointedly at them all the other girls scheduled and continued to eat snow.

Jo just shook her head and sighed, it was a losing battle anyway as she signed to them. ‘Who wants to build a snowman?’

‘Me, me me,’ both of the girls signed, raising their hands if they ran over to her.

Alex reached out and took Edith, sitting with her in the snow for a little while. Jo showed the girls how to make a ball and then put it in the snow to roll it to make a snowman. With the girls' help they soon had ⅔ of the snowman done as Alex had to help them with the head as he put it on top of the Snowman. 

“Alright, why don't you two go look for a rock so we can make eyes and a mouth and I'll go grab a carrot for a nose,” Alex said as he walked back to the house.

“I think all we have are baby carrots.”

“That's okay.”

‘He can have a baby carrot nose,’ Luna agreed as ran to help him.

Alex nodded and went to get the carrots from the fridge. Luna was already at the fridge digging into the vegetable drawer. She left white little footprints on the hardwood and Alex grabbed a towel to clean it up. When they went back outside they saw that Jo and Helena had already put little sticks in for arms. He picked up Luna so she could smash the carrot into the snowman's face. After she finally got it to stick, they all stepped back as they all looked at the snowman.

“Well, I think we're very successful snowman builders,” Alex as he high five Luna as she slipped his hand with all her strength. 

“Alright, who's ready to go inside for some hot cocoa,” Jo said as it was starting to get a bit cold. The wind picked up and the light snowfall started to pelt their coats as the cold seeped into them. 

‘Me me,’ all the girls signed as Jo nodded and they ran inside.

After hot chocolate and warm cuddles in Jo and Alex’s bed, the girls all took their nap. The rest of the day was spent watching the snowstorm and hanging out inside. That night they scrounge up a dinner of mac and cheese and hot dogs with a little bit of broccoli.

“Well it's hardly a good dinner,” Jo said as she placed the plate in front of the girls and sat down with Alex.

“Oh well we can get leftovers from Meredith tomorrow,” Alex said with a smile.

AN: It’s not Christmas unless I post a Karev family fic. Here’s the pajamas the Karevs were wearing!

Jo was startled awake and sat up as she heard her daughter’s cries coming from the baby monitor on the nightstand next to her. She sighed as she sunk back into the bed and looked over at Alex. He let out a groan, but hadn't gotten up from where he was face down in his pillow. 

They're lovely sixteen month old daughter Edith Karev lived up to her namesake as she was loud and bossy. She was going through a sleep regression and also getting all four of her molars so she was up every few hours with teeth pain after the tylenol wore off. Meaning she didn’t sleep for very long and neither did her parents. They were tired and fighting more often as a result. 

“Your turn,” Jo said, reaching her arm out to lightly hit his back. 

“Noooo,” Alex moaned, still face down. “I was up with her at two in the morning. It's your turn!” 

“Oh fat change Alexander!” Jo said, rolling over so she could properly argue with him. “I got up with her at 3:30 a.m. so it is your turn.”

“You did not, I would’ve heard her,” Alex said, turning his head to glare at her.

“Well you didn’t hear her, so I got up and I've got the video to prove it,” Jo said, grabbing the baby monitor camera and pulling up a video of herself walking into Edith’s room as she cried and showing him the timestamp. “You slept through the whole thing.”

Alex signed in defeat as he laid back. “Fine I'm it, but you're getting up with the girls.”

“Ugh, fine,” Jo said as she grumbled, but she rolled over and curled around her pillow remembering her victory and enjoying a few more hours of sleep. “There's new teethers in the freezer.” 

“Got it,” Alex whisper yelled back as he left.

Jo glanced over at the alarm clock to see that it was 4:30 am. She sighed knowing that the three year olds would be up in less than a few hours. She closed her eyes and took a few deep breaths, doing her best to calm herself down and soon enough she was sleeping again.

Of course, a few hours later Jo was woken up by her daughter again, but this time it was her three year olds as they ran into the bed. “Mommy, Daddy, Mommy, Daddy!”

Jo looked up as they came up to her and looked over at the clock to see that it was 7:30 and weren’t up too early. So she smiled as Luna and Helena immediately climbed up between them. Helena snuggled up to her as Jo warped her arms. 

“Hi Mommy,” Helena said as she immediately buried herself in Jo’s chest and Jo snuggled her close. 

“Hello baby,” Jo replied as she kissed her head.

Luna climbed up on Alex’s back and started to bounce up and down and push on him. She reached up to force his eyelid open as she signed to him. ‘Daddy, Daddy wake up! It’s Christmas.’

“Daddy's tired,” Alex groaned, turning his head from Luna’s little fingers.

Luna pouted, sitting back on his back and crossing her arms. Jo giggled at her daughter and Alex looked over at her with a glare. She knew it was her turn to get up with the girls but she let them torture Alex a little longer. Alex let out an even larger sigh, before promptly turning over, making Luna fall off his back.

Luna screeched as she popped back up with a frown. 

Alex turned over and immediately started tickling her as her giggles filled the room. “Daddy is a tickle monster and he's going to get you!” 

The girls quickly got up and crawled over Jo as they hid themselves behind her. Jo just laughed don't bothering moving, until Alex turned and looked at her with a large smile wiggling his fingers. 

“Oh no girls run away! Daddy's going to get us!” Jo said and signed to Luna, quickly rushing to get up from the bed but she was too slow and Alex quickly caught her.

“Nobody escapes the tickle monster!” Alex said as he grabbed her around her waist and tickled her sides in the spot where he knew she was ticklish as she roared with laughter.

“We'll save you Mommy!” Helena said as she jumped on Alex and started to tickle him back.

“Stop, stop, Alex, I'm going to pee!” Jo screamed as she laughed. 

“Okay,” Alex said as he stopped, but not before Luna and Helena jumped back on top of him. 

Alex pulled back and laughed as they all quickly started ticking him as well. Soon enough, they were in a pile in the middle of the bed as ticklish little fingers escaped no one. Jo sat up as she laughed holding both of her girls as Alex leaned against her. They all took a second to catch their breath, but the large smiles remained. 

“Merry Christmas my girls,” Alex said and signed, his eyes sparkling as he sat up and kissed Luna's forehead then Helena's head, before finally leaning in and giving Jo a proper kiss on her lip. Jo reached up to hold his cheek with her hand, forcing him to kiss her a little longer.

“Oh yeah, it's Christmas morning,” Jo said as she had completely forgotten that it was Christmas. 

Although how she forgot was a mystery, between her husband and her daughters constantly reminding her it was almost Christmas. Luna could barely sleep last night as she was so excited. She wasn't sure how much they remembered of their last Christmas, as memories of last Christmas filter through her head.

Alex got up and gestured for the girls to go with him. “Come on, it's Christmas. We gotta go see what gifts Santa left us.”

‘Santa, Santa,’ Luna cheered as she jumped up and down.

“Santa and Waffles,” Helena cheered, Jo wasn't surprised she was always hungry in the morning. 

“Okay then let's go,” Alex said as she let them pull her out of bed.

They were all wearing the matching family pajamas as Jo insisted they wear every year, they had even got a pair for Reeses. This year it has been easier to convince Alex to join in as Luna and Helena had picked them out. They were all white with colorful strings of lights wrapped around them. Alex had frowned when presented with them and said he looked like a white christmas tree. However, the second the girls tried them on and insisted he wear them too, Alex agreed and barely complained to Jo after that. 

He grabbed Helena and picked her up from where she was jumping on the bed. “Come on, let's open presents.”

The girls dragged them over to the baby gate at the top of the stairs jumping up and down as they held onto it. Although Alex quickly scolded them. “Girls stop, you're going to break the baby gate and fall down the stairs.”

‘okay,’ Luna sighed as she let go of the gate.

Although Helena kept pulling on it as Jo reached down and picked her up. “You’re just so excited, aren't you, baby girl?”

“I wanna see the presents Santa gave me,” Helena said with a big smile.

“Yeah, let's go see what Santa left us!” Alex smiled as he held Helena and reached the baby gate.

“Hang on, I think Edith is up,” Jo said as she turned towards Edith’s room.

“No she's not,”” Alex argued with her. “Otherwise she’d be screaming at us, again.” 

“Uh-huh,” Jo said as she pulled up the baby monitor on her phone. 

Sure enough Edith was wide awake, looking around and for once she was not screaming. She seemed content to look around her crib. She had rolled over onto her back and kicked her legs, as she didn’t seem interested in going back to sleep. 

Jo showed the footage to Alex who sighed, but smiled. “Well I guess all the girls are ready for Christmas morning.”

“I’ll go get her,” Jo said as she went and opened the door to the nursery.

Well the new nursery, as Luna and Helena's room was no longer the baby room. Although the two girls still shared a room, they had moved them to the bigger room across the hall. Leaving the smaller one, directly next to them, for Edith. 

They did this in the hopes that Edith’s screaming wouldn't wake up the girls at night. However, even with her in their room, the first few nights after they came home from the hospital she would often wake up Helena. Being deaf Luna slept through it all. Having to get up with two girls in the middle of the night had been rough, luckily Helena adjusted to the now sound. Now she sleeps through it, most of the time. 

Jo walked into the room as she looked down at Edith in her sleep sack. Edith instantly started kicking her legs making high-pitched little happy noises as she happily greeted her. Jo reached down into the crib as Edith reached up for her and Jo picked her up.

“Ma-ma, Ma-ma.”

“Hi baby. Are you my wiggly girl this morning? Are you happy to see me?” Jo cooed to her as she learned in and pressed their foreheads together.

Edith calmed down and made quieter noses. She pressed her tiny little hands against Jo's face as Jo smiled and kissed her cheek. Edith was so happy to see her Mama in the mornings and Jo loved being her favorite. She was sure Edith would be a daddy's girl soon enough but for now she was a mama's girl. Jo enjoyed every second of it, especially as she savored these fleeting moments with her last baby. 

“That smile still doesn't make up for all the screaming the night before,” Jo said as she ran her finger along Edith’s nose, bopping the end of her nose. 

Edith went cross-eyed trying to track her finger, but she giggled letting out a string of babble. She wiggled in her arms and Jo's heart melted instantly forgiving her. 

“You're lucky you're cute kiddo,” Jo said leaning down to kiss her forehead again before she went back to her husband and the kids that were waiting for her on the top of the stairs.

Alex held the girl's hands as he finally opened the baby gate. Luna and Helena practically jumped down the stairs saved only by Alex holding their hands. Although he was just as excited to get to the tree. Jo followed just as quickly, though gentle enough not to bounce Edith too much. 

She paused as the living room came into view. The colorful lights glittered off the tree as it was the only light on downstairs. Jo smiled as the girls gasped at the amount of presents underneath the tree. They had gone a little overboard this year, getting the girls everything they wanted and more. Jo thought it was a little unreasonable, but Alex wanted to spoil them and Jo didn't have the heart to say no. They were both pushovers when it came to spoiling their girls. 

“Santa’s feet!” Helena said, pointing at the footprints around the living room. 

‘Santa really was here!’ Luna signed, her face alight with excitement.

“I told you he’d come,” Alex said, looking over at Jo who just smiled, remembering how last night Alex had dipped his boots in a tray of flour to make the footprints around their living room.

Reeses sniffed around the Christmas tree, searching every single present and digging his nose in between the presents. He finally sniffed out the bone they had left for him to get it and wagged his tale as he grabbed the whole thing, which was extremely large. Reeses took the bone back to his bed and settled down there. He would probably be there for the rest of the day. 

‘He ate the cookies,’ Luna signed, pointing at the cookies that were all gone from the plate as well as a half eaten carrot that they had left out for the reindeer. 

“Santa’s got a big mouth,” Helena said, holding up one of the cookies that had a large bite out of it. 

Jo frowned a little bit as it was the cookie she had half eaten, but Alex just smiled and laughed. “I suppose he does.”

Jo the side eyed him as she cleared her throat, but Alex still laughed. Edith was content to stare at the Christmas lights as she always did, but eyed the new presents under the tree. Jo set her down and she toddled over to the tree grabbing at the presents underneath. 

“Can we open p’esents now?” Helena asked, jumping up and down next to the tree.

“Yes, let's open presents!” Alex exclaimed, signing for Luna too, just as excited as their kids. 

“Remember girls, the ones with the sugar plum ones are Luna’s, the candy cane wrapping are mine, the ones with the gingerbread wrapping are Daddy’s…” Jo said, before Helena cut her off.

“That is mine,” Helena said, pointing at the purple sugar plum fairy wrapping paper.

“Yes baby those are you’re,” Jo said with a smile as Helena grabbed her present. “And the snowflake ones are Edith’s.”

The girls quickly got to work unwrapping all of their gifts and soon the living room was a mess of wrapping paper, toys, clothes, and other little things they got the girls. She and Alex had unboxed all the toys and dolls for the girls so they could play with them immediately. 

The girls had loved the princess dress up and work dress up clothes they had gotten. Helena was currently decked out in pink Princess wear and Edith insisted on wearing one of the princess dresses too. While Luna was in love with the astronaut costume. Helena loved the magnet train they got her and had settled to build it. While Luna was looking there all her picture books and making Alex read to her. Edith was content with her ball drop tower and played with it on repeat. Jo unwrapped one of her last candy cane boxes as she lounged on the couch. She opened the jewelry box and gasped at what it was.

“Oh god Alex, you fixed it!” Jo said as she looked over at him, her eyes brimming with tears. 

The watch Ms. Schmidt had broken a couple of weeks ago. When she had taken it to the jeweler, they said it would be impossible to fix as some of the parts were no longer available. Jo had set the watch aside in her jewelry box and mourned that it would never be fixed again.

“Yes, and it wasn't easy. I had to go to several jewelers before I found one that could fix it. They had to make some of the parts and he wasn't sure if he could fix it but they did,” Alex said, pausing his reading and staring over at her with this little smile. 

“It looks better than ever, it really does,” Jo said looking down at the watch that had been fully restored to its former glory with an additional polishing. 

It now glittered as she held it up, and bore no trace of the scratches and dents from years of use. The watch ticked happily and told the exact time already. It was the most thoughtful gift he had ever given her. However she hesitated to put it on her wrist. It was such a sentimental piece of jewelry and it meant so much to her. She didn't want it to break again with everyday use. She had also gotten a new smartwatch that she loved, but her wrist still felt empty without her watch. 

“What's wrong?” Alex asked her, getting up and coming over to sit next to her.

‘Daddy read to me!’ Luna demanded glaring at him. 

‘Give me a second Luna,’ Alex signed back to her with a raised eyebrow as Luna pouted, but went back to looking at her book. “What's wrong Jo?”

“It's nothing, I just don't want to get broken again but I still want to wear it,” Jo said to the sigh as You looked at her watch.

“Then wear it for special occasions, like today,” Alex said, taking off her smartwatch and replacing it with Ms. Schmidt’s watch with delicate surgeon's fingers. “Then put it back in your jewelry box. That way you can wear it but it won't get broken again at work.”

Jo shook her head and smiled as she admired it on her watch. “I can't believe I didn't think about that, thank you, Alex.”

She closed her eyes and leaned in to kiss him. Alex reached up to hold her cheek as he tilted his head and kissed her back. It was a warm, soft moment between them. 

“It definitely beats the gift I got you,” Jo said with a little smile as she went over to the tree and pulled out one of Alex's gifts. The brown gingerbread wrapping was done as best she could. 

“Oh I don't care, I'd love anything you give me,” Alex looked delighted as she brought it over to him. He tore off the wrapping paper with glee and pulled it back to reveal the massage gun he wanted for ages. “Jo this is perfect!” 

He looked over at her with a wide smile as his eyes sparkled and quickly opened it. As they had done with the kids, Jo had pre-opened it and made sure it was charged up and easily accessible to him. He pulled it out of the case and immediately started it up. 

“I know you've been complaining about your sore muscles after Surgery or when you play horsey with the girls, so I’m glad you like it,” Jo teased him as she landed and kissed his cheek. “Come on, turn around, I'll try it on your back.”

Alex complained and Jo started up the gun. Alex let out a moan of contentment and melted into her as she massaged his back.

“I want to try,” Helena said, coming over to them. 

“It's Daddy's turn right now baby, you'll have to wait a second,” Jo said to her as she crawled up on Alex's lap.

“That's all right, let me have it. I’ll show you how it works princess,” Alex said as she handed him the massager and set it to a lighter mode as he massaged Helena's back.

“It tickles,” Helena complained with a laugh and quickly squirmed away. 

‘I want to try it,’ Luna signed, coming over to them as Edith got up too and they passed the massage gun around letting all the girls try it but Jo eventually got it back and gave Alex a nice massage.

That night they all crawled into Jo and Alex’s bed to watch a movie. They all had baths and showers and dressed in fresh pajamas since they had been in these ones all day. Then they got all nice and snugly and curled up all together as a family. Alex put on The Santa Clause and they watched it together as all got to enjoy a little bit of the Christmas magic. The girls were all between them with Edith resting on Alex's chest and Luna next to her as Helena was next to Alex. 

“You know I used to watch this movie and I'd really believe in Santa,” Jo said as she looked up at Alex and reached out to curl her fingers in the hair at the base of his neck. 

“Yeah me too,” Alex said with a smile as he reached out to take her hand and kiss it. 

“Yeah and I'd always ask Santa to bring me a family,” Jo said with another smile as she reached down to run her fingers through Luna's hair and looked over at her and Helena, both of them were fighting sleep. Edith had already lost the battle as she was lightly snoring on Alex’s stomach and he had his arm around her. 

“And now you have one. I hope it's as good as everything you ever wanted,” Alex said as he smiled down at her. 

“It is,” Jo said with a smile as she tilted her head up and he leaned down to give her a warm and slow kiss. but it was warm and full of love

“Merry Christmas Jo,” Alex whispered against her lips.

“Merry Christmas Alex,” Jo whispered to him again as she captured his lips in another kiss. 

“Merry Christmas Momma,” Helena said and signed as she turned around and gave her a hug as Jo wrapped her arm around her.

‘Merry Christmas,’ Luna signed as well hugging them as well.

“Merry Christmas girls,” Alex said and signed as he laid down and kissed their forehead. 

They all went back to the movie and Jo went out the window to see the snow was still falling, big heavy flakes but she smiled as she snuggled with her family warm and safe and happy it is quality season with everything she had ever asked Santa for.

“If you don't help, you can't play in it,” Alex said as he raked the leaves into the pile he had in the middle of the yard. 

Jo shrugged as she sat on the steps of the deck with Recess lying next to her. She was drinking her coffee in her slippers and a sweater as she watched him. It was a chilly October day, although Alex was sweating in his sweater. He almost had the perfect pile of leaves. He wanted it to be ready for the girls as soon as they got up from their nap. Their backyard had two maple trees, one apple tree, and an evergreen tree growing in the corner. Along with the neighbor’s trees around them, it provided ample amounts of leaves to create a huge pile. 

“I'm watching the kids,” Jo said as she held up the video baby monitor in her hands. 

“You could just clip it onto your belt and we'll hear them when they get up. Now take the other rake and help me,” Alex said, sweeping the small pile he had up to the top of the larger pile. 

“Can't I finish my coffee first?” Jo said, holding up her Halloween black witches cauldron mug, “I want to savor it. Besides, I spent all morning chasing the girls around and doing tummy time with the baby. And now look who's all asleep at the same time for the first time in ages.” 

Jo held up the baby monitor with a bit of a smug smile as she sipped her coffee again. Alex had to admit it was a rare sight. The baby was never on the same schedule as their toddlers. While Alex had worked that morning doing dishes, diapers, and playtime, Jo had worked hard to tire out Helena and Luna by chasing them around the yard. She’d also worked to keep Edith up a little bit longer and had done tummy time with her as she could finally hold her head up. Then she rushed through lunch and put the girls down early. While he put Edith down with ease as she fell asleep the second he sat down with her in the rocking chair. 

“Okay, you deserved it, but can't you at least help me a little bit after the girls wreck it?” 

“Okay, that’s only fair.”

Alex had a strategy of going around the corners and sweeping it all into a smaller pile, then scooping it up to the bigger pile in the middle of the yard next to the playcenter and swing set. It had worked out pretty well so far. He had gotten three quarters of the yard done when Jo agreed to join him and they made quick work of the last quarter. Just as they were carrying the leaves over to the big pile, they heard yelling on the monitor as Jo picked it up.

“Helena's up,” Jo said as she handed him her rake and went back inside to get her.

“Alright, guess we can stop now,” Alex said, putting his collection on the pile and giving a pat as he stared at it.

“It’s not going to blow away in the wind,” Jo said jokingly, gesturing to the dead air around them. 

“I know,” Alex said as he put down his rake and they went inside.

They got Helena up and by then Luna had woken up too. Shortly after they got the girls up and after Edith ate, they all got ready to go outside. Alex got Luna and Helena ready in their jackets and hats while Jo got herself and Edith ready.

“She’s going to get overheated in that,” Alex said as he watched Jo zip up the snowsuit on Edith. 

“No she won’t,” Jo said, she even went as far as to put the hood up as Edith was already wearing a hat.

“She already looks hot.” Alex rubbed her little red cheeks as Edith turned to suck on his finger.

“She'll be fine and she'll be just toasty enough once we get outside,” Jo said as she put on her own coat and picked up Edith. “At least I don't struggle to get one kid into a coat,” 

Alex sighed as he looked over at where he was holding up the coat for Helena. “Come on kiddo, you need a coat before we go outside.”

“No coat,” Helena said as she shook her head and waved her arm at him.

“Yes coat, or no outside,” Alex said, as he glared at his stubborn toddler.

“No coat!” Helena whined as she stopped her feet.

“Fine, I guess we'll just go out without you, come on Luna,” Alex said, taking her hand as she already had her coat and hat on.

Jo had even put her in a pair of mittens, although one of them was already off, but it didn't go far as it was clipped to her coat. Alex remembered when Amber had little mittens clipped to her coat and how he made sure that the clip was tight because they only had enough money for that one pair. 

He took Luna's hand and opened the sliding glass door to the deck and went outside. Helena tried to come out with them, but Alex turned around and stopped her, shutting the door as she remained inside. 

“Sorry kiddo you can't come outside without a coat,” Alex shrugged pointing to where he left it on the side table. 

“No coat,” Helena argued, stomping her feet again and Jo rolled her eyes at the mini tantrum. 

“Okay bye Helena,” Jo said as she went outside as well. Reeses looked between them and Helena before he followed Jo out and they left Helena inside alone.

“I go outside,” Helena pleaded with them and banged on the door.

She cried and screamed, bagging on the door as they all waited for her to be done. She cried for a good minute but was used to them being firm on their request of her. As she settled down and her screams stopped, Alex crouched down in front of the glass door.

“Helena coat,” Alex gently told her, pointing to her coat. 

Helena sighed as she ran and grabbed her coat, struggling to put it on. Alex opened the door and went back in to help her. He zipped it up and Helena ran to the door as Jo opened it up for both of them. 

“Hey girls, look at this,” Alex said as he excitedly ran over to the leaf pile. Jo thought that he was the most excited one for the leaf pile.

“Leaf,” Luna said, pointing at it and signing leaf again. 

“Yep,” Alex said, walking back to her. “Now who wants to jump into it?”

Alex turned around and excitedly ran to the pile and jumped in like a little kid. Jo laughed as he sank into the pile, sending all the leaves flying. Reeses ran after him, jumping in as well and disappeared into the pile. His tall kept wagging as he popped back up and clumped on Alex, licking his face. Alex trudged through it and helped Reeses out before he looked at the girls. Then Helena was running at him full speed and jumping face first into the pile with a gleaming laugh. She popped up next to him and Alex grabbed her as he laughed and the disrupted leaves fell around them.

“What do you think, Luna?” Jo asked as they both walked down the steps of the deck. 

Jo could tell that she was a little more timid about it, but Alex gestured her forward and Jo gave her a little nod and let go of her hand. Luna started running towards a pile, not as fast but she still jumped into Alex's arms. Alex caught her and she laughed as Helena tossed a leaf on her head. 

“What do you think, baby girl, was that fun?” Alex asked and signed to her and smiled.

'Yeah, again, again,' Luna signed as she ran back to Jo before running back into the pile. 

They jumped into the pile several more times as Jo stood by holding Edith and threw leaves on them. Alex and the girls played in the leaves, kicking them, squashing them, and generally having a good time. Jo even let Edith make her own pretend jump into the pile as Alex sat her on top of it. Although Jo was mostly content to sit with Edith on the big hammock chair on the big oak tree as they watched Alex and the girls play and jump. Alex tossed the leaves into the air and watched them fall over Luna and Helena as they quickly did the same, tossing them up into the air as much as she could although it didn't end very well as they went everywhere. 

The girl's laughter filled the backyard and Alex loved the sound of it. The yard quickly became another mess again as they played for most of the afternoon, only going inside to change diapers and get a snack before they immediately demanded to go back outside and play. Eventually, things grew dark and the girls got tired as Alex tossed Helena into the pile again as she laughed, although by now Luna was just laying on the pile enjoying the leaves that had gotten tangled in her little blonde hair. 

“Are you guys having fun?” Jo asked as she came over to them and handed Edith to him.

“Yeah, are you?” Alex held her and stuck out his tongue at her, making her copy him. Jo stepped in and sat in the leaf pile as Alex tossed the leaves over her.

“I've never really done this before,” Jo said, looking around at the leaves as she tossed them up into the air with a laugh and they floated over her.

“Really?” Alex asked, looking over at her with a slight frown. “I used to do this all the time with Amber and Aaron.”

Jo shrugged as she looked back at him, her smile fading a little. “I grew up in apartments in Boston and I didn't really get the chance. No one really raked a pile for me and I didn't really know how to do it myself. When I got old enough to do it myself it seemed babyish, so I didn't do it.” 

“Well, I think we should make it a fall tradition and do this all the time,” Alex said with a smile.

“Yeah,” Jo said, smiling back at him as he reached for her waist and pulled her in as he kissed her. Jo smiled into his lips and kissed him back as the girl laughed, and played and tossed the leaves over them.

AN: This was inspired by a trip to the tulip farms that I took with my mom back in April. We go every couple of years and if you head over to Here you'll see a cute picture of me and my younger sisters at the tulip fields when we were little. 

Luna is 23 months old or almost 2 and Helena is 17 months old, or almost 1 ½ months old.

The Easter Bunny had come to Grey-Slone and thus the littlest Karevs were off to visit him. Jo insisted that the girls have a picture with the Easter Bunny. It had become a tradition of hers to always get pictures of the kids with whatever holiday figure was available on the ped’s floor. From the Easter Bunny to the ghost of Halloween that Alex had dressed up as to surprise the kids as he passed out Halloween candy. Although the girls immediately knew that it was just Daddy with a little bit of makeup. 

Usually, the girls loved all the holiday figures. They adored Santa and weren't scared by the Halloween ghost. But the Easter Bunny was a whole other thing. Last year, when Helena was four months old and Luna was eleven months old, they screamed bloody murder the second the Easter Bunny walked into Luna's hospital room. They quickly sent the Easter Bunny out, but it took a while for the girls to calm down. 

However this Easter was different, the girls were older. Helena was sixteen months old and Luna was twenty-two months old and they had been watching Easter Bunny movies and listening to Easter Bunny books. They told the girls that the Easter Bunny was the girl’s friend and that Mommy and Daddy would be with them to protect them. However, the girls were weary of him. 

“Look girls, there’s the Easter Bunny,” Jo pointed, signing, ‘Easter Bunny’ to Luna as they were finally second in line to see the Easter Bunny and entered the room that was all set up for the easter bunny photos. 

She was holding Luna and her bump as their baby wiggled inside her. Jo could tell that it was a nervous wiggles and kicks as her anxiety affected her baby. She was worried this would all be a disaster, but hoped that it would go well. Alex was holding Helena and they had been waiting in line for about twenty minutes. The hospital had them preregistered for a timeslot which made waiting easier for all the hospital kids. For the kids who couldn’t leave their room, the Easter Bunny had visited them earlier that morning. 

“Yeah, and he’s giving those kids Easter eggs,” Alex said, signing, 'eggs' then 'Easter,' with the same level of enthusiasm as they tried to convince the girls that seeing the Easter Bunny was a good thing. 

Luna looked weary at the Easter Bunny and sat back, trying to sink into Jo’s arms and Helen frowned as she looked at the Easter Bunny. Jo and Alex exchanged a look, as they both hoped it would go well.

Finally, it was their turn as they cautiously walked up to the Easter Bunny. The girls let Jo and Alex sit down with them next to the Easter Bunny for a family photo. The girls didn’t smile, but didn’t frown, although Helena gave the Easter Bunny quite the side eye. Jo and Alex wanted a picture with just the girls and the Easter Bunny, and so Alex got up and placed Helen in his spot as her eyes widened. 

“Stay there Helena,” Alex said to Helena as he helped Jo up, the chair was just too shallow for her to get up at five months pregnant. 

“It’s okay Mommy and Daddy are right over here,” Jo said as she placed Luna next to Helena, in the hope that they would be okay together. 

However the second that the girls saw them leaving, they started to panic, but they stayed in place as they were told. Jo and Alex stood behind the photographer and tried to reassure them with a smile. Luna looked back at the Easter Bunny who waved and pointed at the camera asking them to smile. Then Luna screamed, despite being hard of hearing, she still had quite the set of lungs on her. Helena joined her sister as they both let out a scream of bloody murder and ran towards their parents. Even the baby in her belly seemed to fight as well, kicking and so much that Jo had to pause and hold her bump. The girls came running to them and Alex ran up to grab them as well, Luna raced into his arms, but Helena ran past him too Jo as she leaned down to catch her. Both girls continued to scream and cry as Jo and Alex hugged them. 

“Hey it's okay, it's just the Easter Bunny,” Jo said as she rubbed Helene’s back but she continued to scream in Jo’s ear. 

“It's not even the Easter Bunny, it's Jules,” Alex said, also signing 'J', to Luna as he pointed to the intern and prompted her to take off her head as Jules appeared. 

“Hi, girls,” Jules said, also signing 'hello' to Luna, as she waved and smiled at them.

Jules was the intern that spent the most time on the maternity floor and the Pediatric floor and thus she had gotten to know the Karev girls quite well. She had also become their favorite babysitter after watching them one night, when Jo and Alex both had an emergency surgery and their babysitter had dropped out. However, even the sight of Jules’ couldn’t console the girls.

Alex put a hand on her back and mouthed ‘go’ to her as they left, taking the girls out of the room. They rushed out and down the hallway, facing the sympathetic and worried parents who hoped their child didn’t have similar reactions. They went a little bit away from the crowd down the hall to find a quiet corner to hide away in. While they calmed the girls, Helena was slower to calm than Luna, who mostly pouted and sniffled as Alex rubbed her back. Jo tried to talk to her, but Helena still cried and kept her eyes closed. 

Helena screamed with all her might as Jo pressed her cheek to her daughter's head and held her. She rubbed her back and swayed as she whispered in her ear that mommy had her and she was safe. But Helena continued to scream inconsolably. 

Jo looked over to see Alex sitting with Luna and sharing a snack of Reeses cups with her and it gave her an idea. Food was a great way to soothe a toddler and breastfeeding was Helena's favorite calming thing. Jo moved Helena from her shoulders to her arms in a baby hold and struggled with her scrub top. Alex saw what she was trying to do and helped her pull up her top. Helena felt what she was doing and stopped crying as Jo pulled her bra down. She divided, in mouth first as she quickly latched on. Jo rolled her eyes, but she wasn’t surprised, she had been feeding her for 18 months now. 

“What’s wrong?” Alex asked as he sat back down with Luna offering her a chocolate.

“Nothing, I just thought she'd have a little more manners by now,” Jo said, looking down at how Helena gulped down every bit of milk she could get. “She’s exactly like you thought.”

“How so?” Alex said, sarcastically raising his eyebrow at her.

“In the way you eat and look at pizza,” Jo said, as she reached for her phone and flipped through her photos. 

Alex just shrugged as he pulled out another snack, this time a bag of chips out of his pocket. He always seemed to have a bag of chips on him and more so now that they had snack seeking toddlers. He shared his chips with Luna and even gave Jo one as she scrolled through her photos. 

She finally found the picture she was looking for and showed it to him. It was a picture of him wide eyed and ready to devour a slice of pizza in the same way Helena was currently devouring her food. She showed it to him as he smiled.

“Okay, I suppose I can't argue with you on that one,” Alex said with a shrug as Jo shook her head. 

“At least one of my girls has manners, isn't that right Luna,” Jo as Luna held her chip with two fingers and took small bites. 

Alex waved her over as he patted the bed next to him. Jo sat next to him crossed legged so she could rest Helena on her folded leg as she nursed her. Then they settled into the silence as they all snacked. She looked down at Helena as she traced her finger along her cheek. Jo only nursed Helena before bed these days, as she was trying to wean her before the new baby got her here. It made her realize how much her baby had grown up.

Both of her little toddlers were starting to grow taller and bigger. They started to talk and sign, more than babble. Jo loved their little voices, Luna’s gentle words and egger signs, and Helena’s high pitched excited talk. Luna was talking more too as she had been fitted for hearing aids and they all took sign language classes and practiced at home. It seemed like each week Luna picked up a new sign and Helena a new word. She and Luna had started having babble conversations in sign language. They seemed to have that bond that Alex said he saw in twins. Jo came back to the moment as she looked down at her girls, now calmly eating, a far cry from their earlier panic. 

“I’m sorry, this was a big disaster,” Jo said as she looked out the window and watched the rain fall.

“It's not your fault, Jo,” Alex said with a shake of his head. “They got scared. We didn't know they would react like this as they didn’t seem to mind the Easter Bunny as much when we showed them pictures of it.”

Jo nodded as she grabbed a handful of more chips and they all watched the rain. Jo finished nursing Helena who was up in an instant and asking for chips too. 

When Luna finished her chip, she looked up at Alex and signed. “More please.”

“Sorry baby, all done,” Alex said, signing 'all done’ and held up the empty chip bag for her to see as Luna pouted. 

“Okay let's go to the cafeteria and get some real lunch,” Jo said as she picked up Helena and held her bump as Luna slipped from Alex’s lap and ran to follow her. Alex just smiled as he followed his girls.

That evening after dinner, Jo was scrolling through Instagram when an ad for the Tulip fields popped up on her feed. Jo watched the video and smiled, they had never been to the Tulip fields. Although she had heard about it from all the locals. Meredith had gone a couple of times as a kid with her dad, but she said she didn't really remember it. 

“Hey, what if we went to the Tulip fields before Easter?” Jo asked as she turned her phone to Alex, who was sitting on the floor, playing with the wind-up cars with the girls. 

Alex watched the ad with a bit of enthusiasm before he smiled back at her, “Yeah, that might be a fun little day trip. The girls would love running around in the flowers although they might try to pick all of them. How would you two do?” 

Alex looked down at her bump and reached out to hold it as he rubbed his thumb over their baby. 

“We’ll be fine, you worry too much,” Jo said, putting her hand over his. “It'd be fun and we could get some cute family photos.” 

“Okay,” Alex agreed as Helena handed him one of the cars as he pulled it back, then let it go as it took off and Helena ran after it. He was essentially playing fetch with their daughters. 

Jo sat back and pulled up the family calendar. “Alright let's see, if I move my 24-hour shift from Thursday to Tuesday next week, then all you have to do is get out of your business meeting with Catherine and Bailey then we can go next Thursday.”

She knew Alex would always prefer a day with his girls and would do anything to get out of a business meeting. As much as he loved being chief of Grey-Sloan again, meetings were the part of his job he hated the most. 

“Alright, let me double-check my schedule and see if I can move the meeting, and then I'll let you know for sure,” Alex said with a nod as he smiled back at her. 

“Sounds good,” Jo said as she leaned in and kissed him before she looked at the girls. “What do you girls think? Do you want to go see the tulips?”

“Yeah, flowers,” Alex said as he and Jo signed flowers.

'Flower flower,' Luna signed as well as Helena raised her hands up and not really attempting to sign at all, but still wanted to be a part of the conversation.

“Alright let’s take our girls to see the tulips!” Jo said, excitedly as she looked down at the girls who fed off of her excitement and yelled.

It all worked out with their schedules and next Thursday the four of them were preparing to spend the day in Mount Vernon. Jo had packed the car with activities, music, and movies for all of them as well as some good nap music, and of course, snacks. They decide to leave a little before noon so that the girls could hopefully nap in the car. They were both like their mama in that they often fell asleep in the car. However, Alex's main concern was his pregnant wife and her recent fainting spell. 

“We stocked up on water right?” Alex asked as he bucked Helena in. They were running forty-five minutes behind schedule as it took longer than expected to get ready and pack up the car. 

“Yep,” Jo said, as she held up her giant water bottle but had a sticker right next to the time showing she was on track.

“And you got your compression socks?” Alex said as he tucked Helena’s knitted blanket from his mom around her and kissed her forehead. 

“Yes dear,” Jo said as she pulled up her dress to show the socks she had on. 

She had opted for a dark green sundress with white flowers as the warm April day had allowed for it, but she put a jean jacket over it. She had the girls in similar green dresses with white flowers. Even Alex had dressed up a little bit in a nice shirt, but he still wore his jeans. They thought they could take a couple of pictures of themselves and the girls for some family photos.

Jo leaned in to kiss Helena's forehead, before she got into the front seat. They had already gotten Luna buckled in and settled with a blanket tucked around her. Luna was already falling asleep as she often would if they kept her up past her nap time. She would just find a random place and pass out, where Helena needed a little more help most afternoons. 

“Okay, and we're going to stop in Everett and Arlington for you to stretch your legs,” Alex said as he got in the car.

“You worry too much,” Jo said as she climbed into the front seat.

“When it comes to you and the girls, always,” Alex said with a smile as Jo rolled her eyes.

“Alright let's head out,” Jo said as she sat back and Alex started up the car. 

Jo immediately set herself up as a passenger princess as she was, by kicking off her sneakers and putting a blanket over her lap she put on the piano and instrumental music for the girls. Alex quickly got onto I-5 as they started their journey. He wasn't surprised when a few minutes later all of his girls were asleep. Jo napped with their girls these days and she almost always napped in the car. This left him to put in his earbuds and play some music of his own, although he kept one out so he could hear the girls and double checked on them in the mirrors every now and then. 

As soon as he got out of Everett, the drive up to Mount Vernon was more of a scenic drive through the farmland in the valleys of Washington. With the coast obscured by hills and the Cascade Mountains to his right, he still saw the snow on the mountain tops. It was a beautiful spring day, although there were still some rain clouds in the distance. Still he knew it probably wouldn't rain. If it did, they were used to going out in the rain and girls had the most adorable little yellow ducky rain jackets.

Alex always found himself enjoying these little day trips with his family. Mostly because he enjoyed spending quality time with his girl. Luna and Helena were growing up far too quickly and he didn't nearly get enough time with them or Jo, especially with her residency. She was always the one planning these little trips, and they tried to do something at least once a month. Last month, they had gone to the Science Museum and the month before they had gone to the aquarium. They also had annual passes to the zoo which was always a family favorite. 

Soon enough he spotted the tulip painted smoke stack as he drove into Mount Vernon. By then Helena was starting to wake up and he had put on some Miss Rachel music for her, but she was only content so long as Daddy sang along. Alex didn't mind as Helena was also a fan of his music as well and they soon switched to rocking out to Led Zeppelin together. 

Jo and Luna woke up as they passed through town and they all got excited. Jo looked over at him as she saw the daffodils at the end of the tulip field. It was just this perfect moment as he looked over at her, setting the front seat so excited about the flowers. Jo just looked so happy and her excitement was contagious to him as he smiled back at her.

They pulled into the parking lot and got everything ready. Jo jumped out of the car and the girls were just as excited. Jo got them out of their car seats while Alex got out the stroller and the diaper bag. As soon as Jo set Luna down and turned back to get Helena, Luna bolted for the flowers that were also across a busy street. 

“Luna!” Jo panicked as she grabbed Helena to go after her, but Alex had already dropped everything to take off after her. 

It only took him a second to catch up to her and scoop her up before he took a second to catch his breath. His heart was in his chest as he finally held Luna, now safe in his Arms. She had never been one to run off which was why Jo had gotten her out first and didn’t hold her hand. She was usually so shy and new places and always stuck to his or Jo's side like glue. 

“Dada I wanna flowers!” Luna protested as she twisted around in his arms, but he had a good grip on her. 

“You can’t run off like that Luna, you have to stay with Mama and me,” Alex said as walked back to them. “We’ll go see the flowers in a second, let's go back to Mama and Helena.”

‘Okay,’ Luna sighed as he walked back with her.

Jo looked up with a sigh of relief as Alex walked back to her with Luna. She had Helena on her hip as she stood next to the double stroller. Alex came over and set Luna in the stroller next as he buckled her in. 

“Please don’t run off like that Luna, it’s not safe!” Jo said as she leaned down and hugged Luna.

“Okay, Mama,” Luna said and signed Mama as Jo smiled at her.

When she pulled back Jo, put a hand over her heart as she looked over at him. “I swear these kids are going to give me a heart attack.”

“Not if I have one first,” Alex said as he shook his head and they shared a nervous laugh.

Jo set up the changing mat in the back of the car and they changed both girls' diapers. Jo also ran to the porta potty before they locked up the car and put their bags in the stroller.

“Is that everything?”

“Oh I forgot the camera, let me grab it,” Jo said as she went into the trunk and pulled out the professional camera she had for family photos. 

Alex pulled out his phone and took a few candid photos of Jo as she fiddled with the camera settings. These days he took a lot of photos of the kids and Jo with them, something he knew he needed to do as a supportive partner. Jo, in turn, took a million of him and the girls. However, he didn't take very many candid photos of just Jo and he was trying to take more of them. 

He wanted photos of just Jo, just his wife. Therefore whatever he found himself staring at her, or taking in her beauty as he told her when she caught him, he took a photo of her. Now he had a good album of just her. It was part of the Mother's Day present working on for her. 

The second part of it was candid photos of both of the girls, as well as their hands and footprints which Jo loved. She had the ones from when they were newborns, set up on the shelf in their room. Helena's chubby little fingers were next to Luna’s 26-week-old tiny hands. Jo had made a cast for Val at her request. She had made two of them, a matching set. Jo had Luna's left hand and Val was buried with Luna's right hand, forever holding a little piece of the daughter she didn't get to hold in life. 

Jo stopped fiddling with the camera and looked over at him. She smiled as she held up the camera and took a picture of him and the girls in the stroller as he plastered on a smile for her. 

“Ugh don't smile like that,” Jo says she looked at the photo with a frown.

“Well, how else am I supposed to smile?” Alex asked, raising an eyebrow at her.

“You're supposed to smile like you want to be here,” Jo said as she rolled her eyes.

“Let's just go see the flowers, princess” Alex said as he grabbed the stroller handles and pushed the stroller towards the flower fields and Jo walked beside him. 

They paid the entrance fee and immediately walked out to the fields.The field was a slightly muddy landscape of dirt pathways that went in between rows and rows of tulips. They dominated the valley as far as he could see. There were rows and rows of hundreds and hundreds of tulips in all different colors. From red, yellow, and orange to purple, white, and pink. The Cascade Mountains in the background completed the beautiful landscape. 

“What do you think?” Jo asked as she knelt down next to a row of yellow tulips. 

“Those ones are beautiful,” Alex said, it reminded him of their wedding flowers as memories of Jo in her wedding dress with her bouquet of yellow flowers filled his mind. 

“Pink, pink, pink,” Helena repeated over and over again as she pointed to the flowers and Alex turned the stroller towards the field of pink tulips.

“Do you like the pink ones, princess,” Alex asked as he went over to the pink tulips with her. Helena reaches out and touches it with delicate fingers.

“Don't pick it now,” Jo said as she blocked her fingers as Helena reached out to grasp it.

“Pink,” Helena says as Jo nodded. 

“It is a pink tulip,” Jo repeated back to her with a smile. “Come on, let's take a couple photos.”

She took Helena out of the stroller first as Alex got Luna out and she crouched down next to Luna who just stared out of the field. She doesn't touch the flowers and instead just looks at them. She had always been a kid that just liked to watch and take everything in. She was quieter than Helena  too, part of that was her hearing loss, and the other was just her personality. Luna always paused before she signed too. Taking everything in before she reacted. 

The two girls sat next to each other and Alex pulled back as Jo captured a few photos of them. Alex tried to make the girls smile and Helena easily did, but it was always harder to get a smile out of Luna. Until Alex nearly fell as he leaned forward. This made both of the girls giggle and Jo captured their laughs. Then Helena got up and grabbed a tulip and pulled it before they could stop her. 

“No Helena, you’re not supposed to touch the flowers,” Alex said, rushing to stop her from pulling more.

Helena just smiled and got up, waddling over to Jo and giving her the flower. “Pink Mama.”

Jo instantly melted as she knelt down and accepted the flower from her daughter and pulled her in for a hug kissing her cheek. “Oh thank you, sweet girl.”

“That's very sweet of you Helena, but no more picking flowers,” Alex said, with a smile as he put a hand on her back. “I'll buy you and Mommy some tulips when we're done okay?” 

“Okay,” Helena said, with a nod as she pointed to the pink tulips. “Pink.” 

“Yes, I'll buy you some pink tulips when we're done.” 

“Dada, purr purr,” Luna said, getting up and walking over to the purple flowers as they all started to follow her. 

They all followed Luna over to the purple tulips and Jo took more pictures of them all. They wandered around the fields seeing the different colors of tulips and even went over to the daffodils growing in the corner of the field. Alex took the camera for a bit and took some pictures of Jo and the girls as well. His favorites were the one where Jo was absent-mindedly staring over at the field of flowers and cradling her bump and one of girls walking and smiling as they held hands.

Jo walked over to a beach and sat down, taking a break as Luna came over and sat next to her. Jo hadn’t worn her sandals and instead opted for her Addis as they were a much better choice given all the mud and her swollen feet. She wrapped her arms around Luna as Jo pulled her into her lap and the two of them sat together for a moment. Alex was holding Helena's hand and she tugged on his hand and he let her drag him around a few minutes longer to see more tulips before they walked over to Luna and Jo. Alex sat down and pulled Helena into his lap and she stilled for a moment and he looked out onto the fields of tulips and the mountains of the Cascade behind them. It was a beautiful clear day and he took a moment to appreciate it. 

“Should we take a family photo?” Alex asked, looking over at Jo. “Maybe we could put it on the Christmas cards?”

“The girls will look a little older by then and we'll have the baby,” Jo said if she put a hand on her bump and he knew the baby was probably kicking her as he reached to feel it as well. “But it would be nice to get a family picture.”

“Okay,” Alex said, as he looked around for someone to take the picture for them. “Besides we could take a Christmas photo at the Christmas tree farm?”

“We'll see,” Jo said with a slight shake of her head although he knew she would indulge him in getting a fresh tree again this year. As he knew she loved them just as much as he did. 

They found someone to take a few photos of them. They took some on the bench and then a few of them in front of the fields. They mostly turned out well as the girls managed to smile or at least look happy in a few photos. Alex's favorite was one of them on the bench with the girls in-between them as Jo cradled her bump. Jo had looked down at the girls instead of at the camera and he loved the look of love across her face.

Eventually they walked out of the fields and over to the little greasy area that was fenced off as a garden of tulips set in different designs. They let the girls run around for a while as they got their wiggles out. Alex made sure of that as he chased them around. While Jo sat on the grass and watched them with a slight smile that faded when she thought he wasn’t looking. He knew the baby was kicking her and after a day of walking, she was tired. Although she hid it from him. So he took over and played with the girls for a while letting Jo rest as she relaxed.

Soon enough they decided to end their time at the tulips and go to the gift shop. Jo bought a poster of this year's fields and walked around looking at all the little nicknacks. As promised, Alex bought tulips for them, and let Helena and Luna pick out what colors they wanted. Alex and the girls wandered around on their own before he realized the gift shop wasn't the best place for two toddlers and waited for Jo with the girls now in the stroller outside. 

Jo eventually finished shopping and came out holding up the poster roll she bought seeing the tulips in his hands. “What did you guys get?” 

“Flowers for my girls,” Alex said, as he held out the bouquet of the yellow tulips for her. 

Alex had bought three bouquets, the second was pink tulips for Helena and the last one was purple tulips for Luna. He held the bouquets but had given the girls one of their flowers. Helena played with her tulip and waved it around as she sat in the stroller, but Luna held on to her tulip and he wasn't sure if she would ever let go. 

Jo blushed as she held the tulips up to her nose and closed her eyes as she inhaled the sweet scent. “They're beautiful, it’s too bad we can’t keep them forever.”

“We can, I got tulip bulbs for us to plant when we get home,” Alex said, holding up the bag of them, this was just an assorted mix of colors but he knew his girls would love them regardless. 

Jo didn’t say anything, she just smiled and reached out to pull him in and kissed him. Her thanks was on her lips as he accepted it and kissed her back. 

“Mama ‘ack,” Luna said to her as she tugged on Jo’s dress. 

“Sorry girls, you ate all the snacks. We’ll have to go find some dinner in town,” Jo said, looking down at Helena and Luna. 

“Big hungry,” Luna sighed dramatically as she pouted. 

“Yeah,” Helena said in agreement with her sister as she also pouted up at them. 

“Alright, let's look for a place to eat,” Alex said, pulling out his phone and searching for some nearby restaurants.

Of course they chose a pizza restaurant and got all loaded up in the car to go. They reluctantly left the tulip fields as the sun was getting lower on the horizon. The tulip fields were set in a warm yellow glow that Jo watched as they drove away. It seemed like it was over far too soon and she wished she could go back and enjoy it more, but she couldn't. Instead she flipped through the photos of them all and smiled. 

Luckily the pizzeria was just a few minutes away as the girls were super excited for pizza. As soon as they got there the girls were eager to get out and jumped in the parking lot as Jo and Alex held their hands. They took turns pulling each of the girls up into the air as they walked in while Luna and Helena laughed. They quickly got settled at a table and put the girls into high chairs. Luna looked around the crowded pizzeria with a frown. 

“Loud Mama,” Luna said as she put her hands over her ears. The pizzeria had many other customers having loud conversations as well as music playing around them.

“I know, baby,” Jo said that she signed to Luna as well.

“No loud,” Luna said pointing at her hearing aid and Jo adjusted it quickly as she turned the volume down.

“All better?” Jo asked as she signed ‘okay’.

“No loud!” Luna shouted, putting her hand over her ears again.

“I'm sorry, Luna, that's as low as it goes. Do you want to take your hearing aids off?” Jo asked as she held her hands out for them. 

Luna couldn't seem to get them off quickly enough as she took them off and threw them to her. They nearly landed in Jo's water but Alex quickly caught them and Jo tucked them safely into the case in her purse. 

‘Better little moon?’ Alex signed to Luna.

‘Yes,’ Luna signed back with a smile.

It had been six months since Luna had been diagnosed with progressive hearing loss and so far she had started talking a lot more, with a hundred words and over fifty signs. Pizza was by far Luna and Helena’s favorite as they signed Pizza over and over again until their cheese pizza was finally delivered to their table. Helena devoured the pizza and practically inhaled the first slice that Alex gave her before she grabbed another one. 

Luna however decided to pick at the toppings like she always did and then eat the pizza in small bites. She was very delicate and not a single bit of sauce lingered on her cheeks as she quickly licked it up with her tongue. Jo smiled as she looked over at Luna. but shook her head when she looked over at Helena to see that she had pizza sauce smeared across her cheeks. 

“See like father like daughter,” Jo said as she looked at Helena and Alex to see that he had pizza sauce on his beard versus her and Luna's clean faces. “Like mother, like daughter.”

Alex sighed as he rolled his eyes. “I'm not that bad.”

“Uh-huh,” Jo said as she reached across the table to wipe his cheek and he turned away from her and squirmed like their toddlers when she wiped their face. 

“Jesus Jo, you didn't have to do that in public,” Alex said as he wiped his own face with a napkin.

“Oh relax, no one gives a shit,” Jo said as she smiled and crippled up her napkin.

Alex shook his head as he looked over at the girls and made a funny face at them causing them to giggle only further however. Until he wrinkled his nose as he smelled something stinky. 

“Uh oh, one of them pooped.”

“It smells like Helena,” Jo said as she reached to get Helena out of her high chair seat. 

“How can you tell who pooped just by the smell,” Alex said as he sniffed the air, not smelling anything distinctive in the poop, but Jo lifted up Helena and checked her diaper to confirm her suspicions. 

“The nose knows,” Jo said, giving him a knowing smile as she picked up Helena and put her on her hip before grabbing the diaper bag. “Besides, Helena's poop smells different than Luna's.” 

“I’ll take your word for it,” Alex said as he watched Jo awkwardly put the diaper bag on her shoulder while carrying the toddler and putting a hand over her belly. “Do you want me to take her and change her?”

“No, I got it,?” Jo said as she waved him off, determined to handle it as always. “Besides, there's probably not a changing table in the men's bathroom anyway.”

Alex nodded in agreement and looked back at Luna as the two of them left. “It’s been a few hours, I should probably get you changed too.” 

Alex smiled at her although Luna just giggled. He bopped her nose and gave her another slice of pizza. They both enjoyed another slice for a minute until Alex heard a crash and Helena screaming and crying. He was up in an instant and hauled Luna from her high chair as she protested him taking her from her pizza. Alex ran for the bathroom as several other servers ran in as well and he opened the door to see Jo sitting on the floor with Helena screaming and crying in her lap. Jo held a handful of paper towels to her head and the charging table was half off the wall as it had broken off and tilted down to the floor. 

“I put her on the changing table but before I could even take off her pants, the top half fell and she slid down and busted her head on the floor!” Jo exclaimed as he bent down next to her. 

“I'll get you some ice and the first aid kit. Jamie, go get the managers and the owner. I'm so sorry this happened, Ms,” one of the waitresses, Cassie, her name tag read, said as she leaned down next to them. 

“How the hell did this happen? When was the last time this was used and checked?” Alex demanded as he got down on his knees, still holding Luna on his hip as she just watched them all.

“We don't usually check it, other than to clean it daily,” Cassie said with a shrug. 

“I cleaned it last night and it was fine, maybe you kid was just too heavy for it.” Jamie said as he came back with the manager.

“Excuse you, my toddler is barely 30lbs. I know for a fact that all commercial changing tables have to be rated for 200lbs,” Jo said as she went off on them. “And what about disabled children who need to be changed? Are we just supposed to use the dirty floor? Have you seen how filthy this is?”

“Says the woman who’s sitting on it,” One of the onlookers said as Alex turned around to glare at them, sending them sinking back into the crowd. 

“Alex” Jo said in a pleading tone as he looked back at Helena. 

He leaned down next to her as Jo pulled back the ice bag and paper towels. Helena’s head had a cut about half an inch long and it was still bleeding steadily. All the while Helena continued to cry and buried herself in her mama's chest. Helena was a rough kid and often fell resulting in a lot of bumps and bruises plus the occasional open wound, but this was her worst one by far. He couldn't help but pail a little bit as he looked at it. He never liked seeing his daughter get hurt. It made his heart leap in his chest and he couldn't even stand it when they got shots at the doctors. He would rather do a gruesome surgery on a newborn than see even a single scrap on his daughters. When it came to his daughters he was just an overly concerned dad. It was only Jo's arm hand on his arm giving him a squeeze that brought him back as he looked away and Jo put the paper towels back over it compressing it to stop the bleeding.  

“It’s a good cut, but she wouldn't need stitches, still we’ll have to use medical glue,” Alex said as Jo nodded and rocked Helena as she started to calm down. 

“We should have some in the kit we keep in the car and I'll do it,” Jo said as Alex agreed with a nod. 

“Hey princesses,” Alex said, catching Helena's attention as she turned her face out to see him. “I know your head hurts but I need you to be brave while Mama fixes you up. And we can get ice cream.” 

“Izz keem?” Helena asked hesitantly as she sniffled.

“Yeah, should we go get ice cream?” Alex said using an excited voice.

“Yeah, izz keem,” Helena nodded but still remained curled up in Jo’s arms. 

They made it out of the restaurant with little fuss. The owners and the managers fell over themselves to comp their meal and offered to pay for Helena’s medical expenses and ice cream in a bid to convince them not to sue. They wouldn't, but he did call the correct health safety departments to report them and make sure that the changing table was never an issue again.

Twenty minutes and four bowls of ice cream later, he was sitting in the back of their car with the trunk open as he sat on the bumper with Helena and Luna in his lap. Jo stood above them putting the glue on Helena’s cut that had  stopped bleeding. Alex made sure not to look as she worked. Helena and Luna were silent and happy as they licked their ice cream and it dripped down their chins. Helena barely complained as Jo worked, thanks to the generous amount of numbing cream they put on her head. Jo quickly finished and put everything away after stripping off her gloves. She put all of the bloody gauze in a plastic diaper bag and threw it away. Then Jo came and sat down next to him as she picked up her own ice cream. 

“Well, I'd say it's been one hell of a day,” Alex said as he passed Helena to her and Jo shared her ice cream with him.

“Yeah but with the Karevs what else do you expect?” Jo said with a shake of her head as she leaned in and kissed Helena's cheek.

“You say that like you're not a Karev, carrying another Karev, with your own brand of trouble,” Alex said with a smile as he reached down and put a hand on her belly and felt their little baby kick his hand as Jo just smiled. 

“Still this would be a good family tradition to start and I love that we did this,” Jo said with a soft smile.

“Yeah, but I could do without the head wound next year,” Alex said before he leaned in and kissed her. 

“It was still a good day,” Jo said, pulling back and looking over at him and their girls.

“Yeah it was,” Alex agreed as he put his free arm around her shoulders. He would love a hundred more weekends like this with her and their girls. “But let's spend the rest of the weekend at home on our couch watching too much Bluey.”

“Sounds like a good plan,” Jo laughed as the girls looked up, both of them having heard what he said as Luna had put her hearing aids back in. 

“Bluey?” Helena asked looked up and expecting them to pull out the tablet for them

Luna immediately started signing ‘dog, dog’ over and over again. 

Alex smiled and signed, ‘yes.’ “We'll watch Bluey on the way home.”

The girls eagerly got into their car seats as they all got packed up to go home. Jo put on Bluey for the girls as promised and Alex tapped on the steering wheel to the theme song. Alex glanced over at Jo, who was watching the sun as it faded from the sky. The smell of the tulips filled the car and Jo buckled herself in as they headed home.
