My favorite thing ever?
Nico has a service dog
Because after Mr. D diagnoses him with PTSD he feels kind of hopeless and overwhelmed (especially after her hears that it can’t be easily fixed with magic or anything)
So Mr D. Suggests that he get a service animal.
Nico argues that animals hate him because he ‘smells like death’. Mr. D Points out that Mrs O’Leary doesn’t hate him.
They both go talk to Hades who jumps at the excuse to win back his son by buying him more stuff.
The dog ends up being a hellhound mix (don’t ask how.)
The mix is mostly so she is a bit smaller for convenience (so she can fit in places.)
I'd assume she looks something like a Burmese mountain dog mix.
Her names Penelope (Penny) and Nico loves her.
Nico and Her spend a couple of months doing service dog training with Artemis and the hunters (dogs are one of her patron animals.)
the time he spends with them also gives him a bit of closure and helps him process what happened to his sister.
soon enough she's graduated their honorary service dog school and is fully trained.
She goes with Nico everywhere. Since she is half hellhound she can assist with shadow travel and make it easier for Nico. (To Wills relief)
She helps Nico with panic attacks and nightmares.
She grabs things for him (KitKats, sword, water, pillows.)
she can even open the fridge in the big house.
If Nico is having a really bad episode or a flashback he can’t come out of or if he’s in any physical danger, she knows to go get Will Chiron or MR D. In a heartbeat.
Again a shadow traveling dog being useful.
Will makes extra sure that everyone at camp is aware of how service animals work.
He teaches all the campers about what Penny's job is and why they’re not allowed to distract her.
On occasion when she isn't working she'll play fetch or get pets from some of the kids.
All Nicos freind's and family love her.
Like everyone wants to be a part of this dogs life, Nico has literally never been more popular.
Hazel buys her a sweater for the holidays.
Rachel helps Nico also dye part of her tail at one point (to keep her identifiable) and they give it a cool design.
Annabeth asks if she can make her a cool dog house.
Piper insists that they take her to the groomer and buys her little bandannas.
Percy helps Nico teach her how to swim.
She will also grabs medical supplies for Will sometimes.
Grover also knows how to talk to her and regularly lets her know how Nico is doing (not that she doesn't already know.)
Nico finds it easier to eat with Penelope.
It kind of forces him to eat on a schedule, since Penny has to be fed three times a day and the two of them can eat at the same time.
Nico also gives her little scraps off his plate sometimes which makes them both happy.
She gets absolutely spoiled.
At one point Nico gets worried that she might get hurt fighting a monster. Hades assured him she won’t but Leo makes her some extra cool dog armor just in case
She also has a little bag attached to her vest for carrying supplies on quests and long journeys. (list of things these bags might contain: Ambrosia, Dog treats, Water/kitkats, extra weapons, drachmas.)
Nico connects so well with this fucking dog.
Like he always struggled with people and he never really even considered being an animal person.
But he absolutely adores Penny.
He talks to her about things that worry him and just finds her presence so unbelievably comforting.
Will solace (who I think personally would become a vet sooner than a doctor) Has this dog on the best fucking diet you could imagine
you have never seen a more medically healthy dog.
And she ADORES Will
Partially because of how calmer Nico is with him, and partially because he keeps a treat jar in the infirmary now.
The best part! she cannot die (from old age at least) Immortal service dog!
Having a huge fluffy head is great for pressure therapy.
Nico (neurodivergent) likes the texture of her fur and stims by petting her or playing with her ears.

what do you think about reader and nyx being bffs and her having a huge crush on azriel , like nyx and reader have been friends for almost 50 years and she still remembers the first time she saw azriel. At was first it was a silly girl crush but it developed to her having a fat ass crush on him fr and nyx knows this and teases her relentless, azriel overhears this and confronts her. Fluff or smut pls i cannot handle angst🧎‍♀️🧎‍♀️🧎‍♀️
well anon, I had planned to go a more playful/smutty route when I started writing this but that was not what the writing gods had in mind for me today. This is FLUFF (and I know you said no angst but I couldn't resist but IT PAYS OFF)
Birthday Wishes
Azriel x Reader
Warnings: none, just lots of fluff and a lil angst, not proofread
Tumblr media
You grew up in Velaris; your first job was as a teaching assistant at Feyre’s studio. You grew close with Feyre, and she became a mentor to you.
You babysat Nyx when he was young, and as you both grew older you also grew closer. He was the little brother you never had, and you were an honorary member of their family. You often accompanied Nyx to family dinners, which was comfortable because of how close you were with everyone. You had trained under Nesta’s command with the Valkyries, and often worked with Rhys and Feyre in your duties as an emissary.
The only one in the IC who didn’t feel like family to you was Azriel. Maybe that was in part because you had a huge crush on him for over fifty years, but he never seemed to pay much interest to you. He was at dinners and events the least of anyone, usually off on a mission, and when he was there you were too nervous to say much to him.
One year, Feyre insisted on hosting your birthday celebration at the River House. Everyone in the family was there, along with some of the Valkyries and your and Nyx’s friends. Everyone except Azriel. When people slowly started leaving the house for the night, you felt tears welling up in your eyes. It shouldn’t have bothered you so much, you weren’t close with Azriel. Why should you care whether or not he’s here? Nevertheless, you found yourself needing to step out for air on the balcony.
Nyx came out and stood next to you by the railing as you two took in the view; he always had a sixth sense for when something was troubling you. “Hey, everything okay?”
You tried to play it off, “I’m great, Nyx. You know how it is, the birthday blues strike again.” Nyx leveled you with a look that let you know he wasn’t buying your excuse. “Come on, I know when you’re upset. Could it have anything to do with a certain Shadowsinger?”
You couldn’t hide your shock as you looked up at Nyx. “Wh-what are you talking about? I.. I didn’t even notice he wasn’t here,” you sputtered out.
Nyx let out a laugh that had you punching him in the arm. “You asshole, why are you laughing at me when I’m crying?” you asked as your own tears turned to laughter at his infectious playful energy.
“I hadn’t even mentioned that he wasn’t here. You told on yourself, sis,” Nyx lobbed back at you, and you turned beet red at the realization you’d been caught. “Shut up, it’s not like it’s obvious. You just know because you’re nosey as Hel.”
Nyx slung his arm around your shoulder as he laughed again, “I think the only person it’s not obvious to is Azriel. Everyone else can see how you look at him.” You sighed, completely embarrassed that everyone apparently knew what you thought was your deepest secret. Nyx noticed your stress at the realization and squeezed your shoulder encouragingly, “it’s fine, sis. I can’t blame you for falling for those dreamy hazel eyes. But if I were you, I’d tell Azriel how you feel. It’s the only way you can move on, good or bad.” You nodded in agreement with him, and Nyx left a kiss on your head before turning around to head back inside.
You noticed him falter in his movement for just a moment before collecting himself. “Oh hey, Azriel,” Nyx greeted cheerfully before slinking through the door without so much as a glance back at you. Traitor. You slowly turned around, praying to the cauldron that he couldn’t tell you had been crying.
But you couldn’t have prepared yourself for the sight before you. Azriel stood in the doorway, hair windblown, wide-eyed and cheeks flushed as he panted for air. You took a tentative step towards him and spoke barely above a whisper, “Azriel. What are you doing here?” Azriel seemed taken aback by your question, but explained as he held up a package in his hand. “I flew here as fast as I could, and then I realized I hadn’t picked up your gift from where I had it wrapped and they were closed so I had to find the owner and get her keys and go to the shop and get your gift and then get the keys back and I flew here but I’m sorry it took so long, I messed it all up but I had to make sure I got you this tonight.”
You were frozen in shock. You didn’t think you’d heard Azriel speak so much or so quickly in his life. He stepped towards you as he finally caught his breath, handing you the package. “Please open it, angel.” You took the package from his hands, unwrapping it shakily as you looked up to see his face filled with anticipation. Opening the box, your breath caught in your throat as you took in the sight of your favorite book inside. “It’s a first edition, and it’s signed. I know it’s your favorite book, and I searched all over for it. Helion had a copy in the Day Court library. There’s something inside the book as well.” You opened up the front cover to find a letter from the author to you wishing you a happy birthday. You looked up at Azriel through teary eyes, and something snapped inside your chest. You gasped as you felt like you’d been struck by lightning, and you realized. My mate.
Azriel gave you a soft knowing smile as he stepped closer to you. “I heard your and Nyx’s conversation. I had no idea that you felt that way. The bond snapped for me about four months ago, but I didn’t want to pressure you because I didn’t think you felt that way for me. I wanted you to have a special birthday, regardless of whether or not you are interested in accepting the bond.”
You were overwhelmed by joy at Azriel’s confession, your emotions emboldening you to reach up to Azriel’s face and cup his cheek. “This book was the most beautiful and thoughtful gift I’ve ever received, until I learned the cauldron gave me you.” You pushed up on your toes as Azriel leaned down, pulling you in close for a deep, passionate kiss that spoke more than any words could relay.
~~~
You can't help but laugh now as you think about that memory, how at one point in your life the scariest thing to you was to tell that male how you felt about him. The same male you smile at across the table exactly fifty years later as you blow out the candles without a wish, because you couldn't imagine wanting anything more than this.
Long Time Coming I Chapter Nine I Electric Love
Summary: Being hired as the first female assistant coach in the league was a challenge of it itself. Being a football protigy and University Football Legend was easy enough. Coaching Jamie Tartt was a challenge all on its own.
Tumblr media
Word Count: 2.9k
Warning: Some angst
A/N: Enjoy
Prologue One Two Three Four Five Six Seven Eight
Jamie gave me some space, for which I was grateful. We had our final match coming up and our dreams of promotion were just in sight. I wanted to be able to focus on what that, the match, which was the most important thing I’d be a part of. But of course, there was only one thing on my mind, and it was Jamie. Without having Jamie around to talk to, I found myself missing him more and more.
I moped my way through the day. Coming to work, going to my desk, going to the pitch, eating a plain salad, and going home. I didn’t want to let it affect my work so when I was on the pitch I tried to stay as unbiased as possible. But honestly, I felt more inadequate than ever. It didn’t help that the media seemed to be shining a light on every mistake you’d ever made in the league.
 “Look, all I’m saying is that she’s too much of an amateur to be on the team,” George Cartrick stated firmly on the Soccer Saturday show. “A woman cannot teach a man.”
“Now, George!” Jeff Stelling defended. “(Y/N) (L/N) has performed admirably under Lasso’s leadership.”
“She’s barely out the womb! What makes her think she’s qualified to be in the Premiere League?” George shot back. “She needs to pack her bags and get out of Richmond before she loses them a chance at promotion.”
I turned my phone off, running a hand through my hair in frustration. Maybe he was right. Maybe I wasn’t ready for this job.
            “George Cartrick is a twat with shriveled balls.” Roy’s voice entered from his side room. “And I should know, he constantly wears pants that show them off.”
I glanced up at him, stuffing my phone in my pocket. “Yeah, thanks, Roy.”
            “Hey, Roy’s right,” Ted agreed. “With the sentiment, I’ve never seen George’s testicles myself.”
I rolled my eyes and rested my head on the desk. I appreciated their sentiment I really did but I was just so BLAH at the moment that nothing they seemed to say or do really help. I was in a funk. A funk I had put myself into. Ted, Roy and Beard exchanged glances with each other.
            “You know, (Y/N),” Ted said, turning to face you. “You can talk to us about anything. Honorary Diamond Dog meeting.”
I peeked out of my arms to look around the room. Nate wasn’t in the room, so I didn’t have to worry about his sorry ass judging my for my pitiful nature. I lifted my head and took a deep inhale.
            “I’m putting space between me and someone I really care about, and I thought it would make me feel better but instead its hurting me more than anything has ever hurt me before.” It all came out in a fast stream of consciousness, not breathing until I got the statement out.
            “Wait, if this is someone you cared about, why are you putting space between you and them.” Beard questioned, finally joining the conversation. You pursed your lips, trying to figure out how to tread this line. There was no way in hell you were telling this group of people about Jamie.
            “Well, um, I was afraid my feelings were getting in the way… and he didn’t care about me the same way I cared about him.” I decided to say. “I thought that I needed to give myself time to get over him.” Beard opened his mouth to say something, but I didn’t let him say anything. “But instead of getting over him, it’s making me want him even more. And I’m trying to focus on the game but everyone and their mom is expecting me to fail! And all I want is to talk to this person because I know they would support me but now I’m afraid to even talk to him!”
Ted raised his eyebrows and let out an impressed whistle. “You got all that cooped up in that head of yours?” I nodded. “Well, no reason you’re in a funk. Look, (Y/N), I think you need to take a note out of a certain snow queen’s book and ‘Let It Go’.”
            “Frozen, classic,” Roy approved, nodding his head.
            “Wait, wait, wait. Let what go?” I asked, furrowing my eyebrows.
            “Well, it seems to me that you are holding on to every feeling, thought, and possibility,” Ted elaborated. “You hold onto all of that you’re gonna pop!”
You frowned at him. “Weren’t you the one who said that sometimes we should keep things inside?”
            “That was before I met the feeling of letting it go! It really works.”
            “It’s true, letting go is great, that’s how I do it,” Roy agreed.
            “Roy! You’re one of the most private people I know!”
            “I’m private, but I also have a very healthy relationship with my emotions and know who and when to trust people with my sharing,” he pointed out, shrugging.
Dammit I hated when he was right. I blew a raspberry and face planted on the table. I wanted to listen to them, and just let things go, but tomorrow was the big day. Maybe it was something I’d worry about later. For now, I’d just focus on the game.
That was my plan at least. But as I was leaving that night, someone pulled me into the boot room. I whipped around to see Jamie looking at me.
            “Jamie what-“
            “Hush, now, last time you got to talk and I didn’t so now you’re gonna listen to me.” He spoke so quickly that you could barely process exactly what he was saying to you.
            “Jamie I-“
“Hush!”
            “But I-“
            “Just listen!” He grabbed me, holding a hand over my mouth. I frown at him but stayed quiet. “I just want to tell you that I was wrong, yeah? I was wrong about everything. I don’t love Keely. I love you.”
My eyes became saucers as I realized what was happening. I knocked his hand away from me, suddenly feeling hurt. He was lying to me. He was giving me his pity. Well, I didn’t want it.
            “Jamie, please stop.” I felt my lip begin to tremble. “You’re being mean.”
            “No, no, no! I mean it!” He insisted, taking me by my shoulders and forcing me to sit down on the bench. He started picking at his fingers as he paced back and forth. “I really do, I was just- I was confused. I had this feeling, like… fluttery stuff in my stomach. And the last time I had that feeling you hated me, and I was with Keely. So… I guess I thought that I was getting that feeling again because of her. But when I told her it didn’t feel right. Then you told me how you felt, and I was so confused.” He finally paused and looked at me. “I know I’m slow, (Y/N), but I get there eventually.”
I opened my mouth to say something, anything, but I really couldn’t think of anything to say. I was still scared that this was all a joke. That somehow, he didn’t actually love you and he was just trying to get you back in his life no matter what. He held up a hand to silence you.
            “You don’t need to say anything, I know you probably don’t believe me, but I mean it.” Gave me a sideways smile, a hint of his normal cocky self coming out. He stalked forward and bent down, so he was eye-level with me, his face just inches away from mine. “And when we win tomorrow and get promoted, I’ll be doin’ it for you, love.”
The pet name fell so easily off his tongue and I felt my cheeks start to heat up under his gaze. His smirk grew as he saw the blush on my cheeks, any semblance of the anxious boy from before was gone. He gave me one last nod, a wink following it before he turned and left. I was left sitting dumbfounded in the boot room.
            “What… the… fuck?” I finally spouted, bringing my hands up to my cheeks.
            “That was something!” Fucking Will. I turned and looked at him, watching curiously as he shined some shoes. “The two of you are cute!”
I stared at him, still reeling from the interaction. At least there was someone else to there to prove that the interaction actually happened. I didn’t know how to feel. Part of me still believed that Jamie was lying as a way to get me to act normal again, and I honestly wouldn’t blame him. But the other part of me felt like I was soaring. Jamie liked me? No, LOVED me! Could this really be happening?
From then on it felt like I was on auto pilot. Leaving the club, getting home, doing my nighttime yoga. It was all like machinery as I figured out exactly how I should feel about everything. Tomorrow, everything would be different. Whether or not we’d be promoted was one thing but what happened with Jamie and me was entirely different.
It seemed like the whole world was on edge the day of the game. Ted was dealing with his personal life being on display, Roy was having the pain of having his feelings hurt, Beard was on the rocks of Jane (again, and Nate was… well he was acting weirder than normal. All we needed to get promoted was a tie, at the least, but Brentford was a formidable challenger.
I stood in the locker room, drawing up the formation on the board. We were running Nate’s new false nine strategy. It was certainly a choice to try a new tactic so late in the season, especially with promotion on the line but the tactic was good. Colin stood with me, chatting with me about his night and the parking ticket he’d gotten for parking half on the curb outside his house.
            “I swear I didn’t even feel the curb when I parked!” He whined, stretching his arms.
            “Colin, you’re a professional footballer,” I pointed out. “Just pay the ticket. And please, for the love of God, if you feel a bump, stop driving forward.”
He rolled his eyes at me glancing over to say hello to Sam as he walked into the room. Even Sam was had something going on. Edwin Akufo was on his ass about making a decision regarding joining his super team or whatever. I gave him a heartfelt smile which he returned. We all had chips on our shoulders, and this game would prove exactly what we could do with them.
The game did not start well. Brentford scored just twenty minutes into the game. Then again taking us into the half 2-nil. There had to be a solution to this. These guys could play this tactic easily but there was something disconnecting them from the execution of it. Going into the locker room, I could feel the anxiety and disappointment seeping from the lads.
            “I’ma shoot y’all straight. This is bleak, yeah?” Ted started the conversation. “I mean, look at it out there. Looks like a Renaissance painting portraying masculine melancholy.” We looked out into the locker room. It was true, they looked almost angelic in their portrayal of their grief. “Okay, so now what? What are we gonna do?”
            “We should abandon the false nine,” Nate suggested, shaking his head. “It’d work if we had players who knew what the fuck they were doing.”
            “That’s not true, Nate,” I snapped, standing from my seat. Nate glared at me, but I pressed on. “They are perfectly capable of preforming a false nine, they just…” I closed my eyes picture the pitch. “They need to change their perspective.”
            “I agree with (Y/N),” Ted chimed in. “You know, they just had 45 minutes to figure out what not to do. What do you think, Roy?”
            “You should ask them,” Roy offered. “They’re the ones out there actually doing this shit.”
Ted glanced at me then Beard. It was a good idea.
            “Yeah, all right.” We made our way out into the room, gaining the attention of the boys.  “All right, fellas. Coaches and I are are having a little debate and wanna get ya’ll’s take on it. Should we stick with the false nine or switch it up?”
The room was silent as the team thought it over, glancing around das they waited for someone else to speak. It was Jan Maas who stepped up first.
            “The tactic is sound,” he said. “and we’re all perfectly capable of executing it.”
            “Yes, you are,” I encouraged. “The false nine is about deception, playing offense through the guise of defense.” I walked over to the white board where I had drawn up the tactic before the game. “You’re playing too forward, and Brentford sees the moves you make before you make them.” I pointed to the different players. “Fall back, make them come to you, look for the gaps. That’s how you score.”
I turned back around and saw all the eyes on me. I felt a rush of gratitude going through me as I appreciated their sincerity. I deserved to be here, and they knew it. Then my eyes fell on Jamie, who was listening with a soft smile on his face. I felt myself start to smile too.
            “It will work,” Jan Maas agreed.
            “Hey!” Ted interjected. “If Jan Maas says it, you know it’s the truth, right?”
Jamie nodded. But he wasn’t nodding about Jan Maas. He was nodding about the way you had explained the technique to them. As if you were on the field with them, knowing what was going through their minds as they played.
We ended our team meeting with the whole team laying hands on our believe sign. This was it. The moment the team became a family. Going out into the second half, it was like an entirely different team. Before we knew it Sam had scored a miraculous goal and all we needed was one more.
I found myself holding my breath as Jan Maas sent a pass to Jamie. I held my breath as he took control of the ball and started towards the goal. Then a Brentford play was sliding into Jamie’s legs sending him stumbling to the ground. I let out a shout of distain as the crowd cried  to the referee. Then we got it! The referee called a penalty. Jamie hopped up and took the ball.
I knew he could make this goal easily; He hadn’t missed a penalty all season. He turned for a moment to look over at us on the sideline, and his eyes met mine. I could tell he was considering something and was looking at me for something, reassurance?  Whatever he was thinking, I knew he needed to follow his gut, so I gave him a nod. He nodded back to me. Then he did something unexpected. He gave the ball to Dani.
Jamie gave up his chance to be called the savior of Richmond. Because that’s not what he needed to do. In this moment, he needed to get Dani his confidence back.  Gone were the days that Jamie was afraid that Dani would replace him. Instead, he was working with him to allow the team to shine.
In that moment, I decided I didn’t care if the whole world stopped, all I wanted was to be with Jamie.
Which was good because it felt like the whole world did stop as Dani prepared to score. Time stood still as he ran towards the ball, and with one fell swoop Dani scored, tying the game. The stadium erupted into cheers and excitement. We did it, we really did it.
The excitement and celebrations of promotion lasted at least an hour as we paraded around the club. The boys found a bar to go to nearby to celebrate the win together. But I had unfinished business here, and I hoped Jamie would find me.
I stood on our pitch, hands in my pockets as I planned out what I was going to say. I was going to tell him that I loved him, too. That I wanted to be with him. That nothing else mattered. But then I saw him, big smile on his face, as he walked towards me in his red vest and ICON hat and everything, everything I planned left my head.
            “Well, what did I say?” He bragged as he walked towards me. “Promoted, eh? How’s it feel to be in the presence of greatness?” I stared at him as he came to stand in front of me. On our pitch. The same pitch I’d chewed him out on just a year ago. He cocked his head at me, raising his eyebrows. “What is it? Why you lookin’ at me like that?”
I grabbed him by his vest and pulled him down to kiss me. He recovered from his surprise in time to grab me by my waist and tugged me closer to him. Electricity shot through me as his lips fit mine just right. How was I supposed to kiss anyone else now that I knew what kissing Jamie was like? It was heated, it was sweet, it was passionate.
It was like fucking lightening.
Pssst, can I ask u🫵 something?
Do you have any rec for skzfic? Since you're a good writer so I think you a good taste in fics
Omg hey! You can absolutely ask me this, sorry it took so long for me to get around to! SO I read most (all) of my fics on Ao3! I'm still getting used to Tumblr lmao I can try to curate some Tumblr fics but that would take me a hot minute But here are some good ones I have bookmarked, I think most, if not all, are smutty 18+, but I'll tag them nontheless: Not gunna lie, 99% of the fics I read have smut just cause of what I like, so
Multi-chap fics:
Close Your Eyes (... And Count To Seven) by MysteryBird (18+) Ot8 x reader Word Count: 117,144 Mafia AU where the reader hooks up with each member of the gang. HIGHLY SMUTTY, has some extreme kinks in it. Definitely a Dead Dove Do Not Eat on the tags. But my god it is so well written and has plot, idk how it doesn't have more attention.
He received an honorary award when he graduated, got a position as a dancer in a company a week after receiving his diploma...and was renowned as the schools famous ice-cold fuckboy." SO good
What You Deserve by 2chopsticks2eyes (18+) This is another author that I devour any of their work Lee Know x reader Word Count: 67,284 "You meet your best friend's group from college and find yourself spending more and more time with Minho. Sexual tension ensues." I think I re-read this fic 10 times already One Shots:
Strike the match, burn me down till I'm nothing by lemonhopia (18+) Kim Seungmin x reader Word Count: 5,290 enemies to lovers (sort of) Seungmin is reader's childhood best friend's brother who has been nothing but a thorn in her side since they were little. He's tasked with picking you up from the airport for your best friend's wedding.
conflict, conceal, confess by fizzydrink698 (18+) TBH anything by this author is AMAZING. I stalk their page so often. Lee Know x reader Word Count: 18,239 "minho and reader have been academic rivals for nearly a decade. now they have to put aside their differences, call a truce and finally admit they're ridiculously attracted to each other."
When he suggests the insane of idea of marrying each other to help each other, you agree to the proposal, unaware of how much the duke can teach you of the wonders of matrimony." I. Ate. This. UP. It is SO WELL WRITTEN.
February 7th 1837 saw the birth of James Murray, first editor of the Oxford English Dictionary.
A couple of things that I love about this, 1; a Scot was the first editor of the most famous English dictionary, a 2; the picture of Murray, he just looks the part!
He was certainly something of a prodigy as a child, despite his humble background. Born in the Borders village of Denholm, near Hawick, the son of a tailor, he reputedly knew his alphabet by the time he was eighteen months old, and was soon showing a precocious interest in other languages, including—at the age of 7—Chinese.
Thanks to his voracious appetite for reading, and what he called ‘a sort of mania for learning languages’, he was already a remarkably well-educated boy by the time his formal schooling ended, at the age of 14, with a knowledge of French, German, Italian, Latin, and Greek, oh and of course Gaelic, along with a range of other interests, including botany, geology, and archaeology. After a few years teaching in local schools—he was evidently a born teacher, and was made a headmaster at the age of 21—he moved to London, and took work in a bank.
e soon began to attend meetings of the London Philological Society, and threw himself into the study of dialect and pronunciation—an interest he had already developed while still in Scotland—and also of the history of English. In 1870 an opening at Mill Hill School, just outside London, enabled him to return to teaching. He began studying for an external London BA degree, which he finished in 1873, the same year as his first big scholarly publication, a study of Scottish dialects which was widely recognized as a pioneering work in its field and was the first ever sustained history of the Scots tongue.
Only a year later his linguistic research had earned him his first honorary degree, a doctorate from Edinburgh University: quite an achievement for a self-taught man of 37.
In 1876 Murray was approached by the London publishers Macmillans about the possibility of editing a dictionary, he accepted the challenged and it was generally thought the publication would take around ten years to complete and run to 6,400 pages, in four volumes, he undertook the work while still teaching at Mill Hill, although he did enlist help in several assistants.
Five years later- no- he hadn't finished it, he was a genius but not that much, they published the first volume, A-Ant, to steal the words from a future film, they were going to need a bigger book!" The team sent out the call for volunteers all across the country. one American man, William Chester Minor, even responded from his prison cell in Broadmoor while serving a life sentence for murder. still suffered from paranoid delusions, some saw his work on the Oxford English Dictionary as a form of therapy. Minor became a regular collaborator with Murray as he sent his notes to the editor every week for 20 years. Every letter Minor signed with the closing, “Broadmoor, Crowthorne, Berkshire.
Murray soon had to give up his school teaching, and moved to Oxford in 1885; even then progress was too slow, and eventually three other Editors were appointed, each with responsibility for different parts of the alphabet. Although for more than three-quarters of the time he worked on the OED there were other Editors working alongside him—he eventually died in 1915—and although he had a staff of assistants helping him, it is without question that he was the Editor of the Dictionary.
It was not until 1928 that C. T. Onions and William Craigie finally finished the main text. In terms of the methodology he developed, The Oxford English Dictionary is largely Murray's creation; as the ‘Historical Introduction’ to the OED states, ‘to Murray belongs the credit for giving it, at the outset, a form which proved to be adequate to the end’.
In his private life Murray married an Ada Agnes Ruthven and they found time to have 11 children together, all of whom reached adulthood, and unusual occurrence back then. Some even helped him in the compilation of the OED. The third pic is great and shows him astride a huge ‘sand-monster’ constructed on the beach during one of the family’s holidays in North Wales.
He was never made a Fellow of an Oxford college, to their shame, and only received an Oxford honorary doctorate the year before his death.He died of pleurisy on 26 July 1915 and requested to be buried in Oxford beside the grave of his best friend, James Legge.
Skz When Their Best Friend Is Pregnant | Skz Reactions
Tumblr media
Summary: skz when female!reader bestie gets pregnant
Warnings: for legal purposes, this is a joke
Notes: I've literally posted this four times now and it won't work.
Chan
Papa Chan. Grandfather at such a young age. He starts talking about you like you were a child he raised, how proud he is to see you "all grown up" and having kids of your own. Will tell everyone he's going to be a proud papa. This will prompt many gifts from him, even matching outfits and items for your child, so that Papa Chan and your baby can bond easier.
Lee know
Please don't invite him to the baby shower. Will judge every gift with HIGH scrutiny because no one could ever top his gift. Eyes of a hawk. If there's absolutely anything sticking out- a thread, a chip, a dent-Minho would make that person return the gift to get a new one. Nothing is going to ever harm your baby, don't worry. But he's evil and is planning to train your child to be a miniature him, so be warned. Your s/o and you won't have any control over what happens with your child once Lino 'tames' it.
Changbin
"You mean our child." Supportive best friend you dont want. Every step is one made together. The father of the child doesn't matter in his eyes, because the best friend is the most important. He would want to be called Uncle Changbin, Muscle Uncle, or God of Muscle. If you go shopping for nursery items or baby supplies, you have to take your other half: him. Changbin doesn't care if it's not actually his child, he wants to be a part of its life 100%. Until it can talk and tell him otherwise.
Hyunjin
Ew. You disgust him. How dare you tell the whole world that you did the 'deed'. Hyunjin didn't need to know you like that. Jokes aside he would consider himself the honorary uncle because he patched you up with your s/o to begin with. If he isn't called Uncle Jinnie, then you lose your title as a best friend. Will like your child more than you. He's not the type to be overly affectionate when you are pregnant, and still calls bluff for the beginning, but he's still caring when you need him to be.
Jisung
Finds it odd that you proudly announce your pregnancy to people. Why does everyone need to know your behind-the-doors-business? Is a little confused about a gender reveal party, when you could just tell everyone what it is like you did with the intial pregnancy reveal. Is the one to ask "who's is it?" despite you having an s/o you are exclusive with. You're a hoe in his eyes now, just accept it.
Felix
Happiest bean. His closest female friend is having a baby? Can he be the godfather? Will happily spend all his money on baby items. Is the first one to offer to throw a baby shower for you. If someone else takes the role, he's the assistant. Documents every step of the way in his Godfather picture album, because apparently that's what all of them do. Buys the child mini computers to prep them for the future.
Seungmin
Omg why? People are still having kids? He spent a good portion of your friendship telling you to "not get knocked up" because then his drinking buddy would be gone forever, even when you can drink again. Also one to like your child more than you. He will teach your child that it's parents are 'old' and thus uncool, making him the fun uncle as well. While you're pregnant, though, he monitors everything you eat/drink and scolds you for even a tiny bit of cheating.
Jeongin
He's the baby in this friend group, why are you trying to upstage him? Feels competitive against the attention your child may receive and starts planning on how to sabotage his success in taking his place. Will smile in your face and once you look away, a scowl replaces it. How dare you, as his best friend, take all the attention? Aside from that he's vibes with the child's presence. Is happier when you're in pain. Pregnancy cramps? Celebrate! Baby kicks in the rib? Round of drinks for everyone!
Not So Ordinary: Since the Midoriya's have a habit of talking to themselves a lot, people are under the assumption that he has three 'minds' instead of one. (He doesn't, kinda, he just likes to declutter his mind by speaking out loud, and the debating just became a habit).
Who, out of all of his classmates, is always first in line to give them headpats? (I'd say 'at UA', but Hado has super speed, so it would be moot).
Also, I can 100% see how him and Ippan would be so close in this AU. Midoriya sees the tall fox lady and goes "wow, she's just like me!", while Ippan takes one look at Goodest Boy and goes "free little brother(s)".
This is exactly what I was picturing. He organizes his rapid train of thoughts by vocalizing and debating his own points even though it's all the same him.
Uraraka, Ashido, Kaminari, and Hagakure would always be down. Honorary mention to Asui because he's snuggly and warm and she likes being warm.
Yeah basically. There are few Pro Heroes with animal mutations as extensive as theirs, and Gang Orca is on the list of 'looks like a Villain.' So being saved by Ippan is proof that he can do it too-- especially when she ends up at UA as a Hero Apprentice and teaching assistant. Meanwhile Ippan sees a cinnamon roll who is very much like her.
Post-RoK and the different clans are no longer at war and even help each other when needed. Fushimi ends up one day being asked to help the Silvers out with something. He finds the other clan strange especially Shiro who he had to interact with a lot as he's the one needing help. Fushimi can't fully disklike the guy though as Shiro is smart and actually doing something with it and he finds they get along when it comes to academic stuff. He's spent a lot of time with them during this event that Shiro says he's practically an honorary member. (I just like the idea of Fushimi fitting in somewhat with any clan he could get into).
Fushimi being very certain that he can’t fit in anywhere while fitting in with every clan is something I enjoy about him XD Say post-ROK there’s some issue happening at the school island that the Silvers are handling, like they’re finally doing some proper remodeling to both fix the damage done in the past couple years and also maybe add some extra accommodations for the kids who still kept their powers after the Slate woke up. Shiro is spearheading the latter part of this in particular, and as part of getting everyone comfortable with each other in the school again they’re having a big school festival once things are complete. There’s a pretty tight deadline and it’s a lot of work for Shiro, especially since he only has two clansmen and Neko has classes of her own, so he sheepishly asks Munakata for anyone he can spare. Munakata happens to have the perfect assistance, sending Shiro just one person but assuring him that Fushimi-kun has the processing power of six people.
At first I could see things being very awkward, since Fushimi isn’t exactly personable and I imagine he gets on everyone’s nerves right away. Neko doesn’t want to work with him because he’s mean while Kuroh keeps trying to ‘improve his mood and work ethic’ with well-timed haiku. Shiro plays peacemaker, reminding everyone that Fushimi is helping them here and please treat him as a guest. Fushimi clicks his tongue and says he doesn’t care but then imagine everyone just slowly warming up to him. Kukuri brings everyone lunch one day and gives Fushimi a special bento because she noticed he doesn’t eat much, Fushimi manages to mumble out a ‘thanks’ in return. He starts picking out the vegetables immediately, much to Kuroh’s dismay and now he’s probably determined to give Fushimi some healthy food. Neko meanwhile is suddenly feeling very friendly because look someone else who just wants to eat meat and not veggies, like they have a common ground now.
Shiro’s also busy with his teaching work and at some point Fushimi ends up helping him grade tests, just to get it done so Shiro can get back to the other work. Shiro gives him an answer key and apologizes for the trouble, and then is all surprised when Fushimi’s just flying through the grading without even looking at the key because he knows all this stuff. Now Shiro’s intrigued and starts chatting with him about science stuff, he’s really impressed with Fushimi’s mind and he gets what Munakata was saying about this person’s abilities. The other kids at Ashinaka start taking Fushimi’s presence in stride too, half of them are treating him as if he’s a fellow student while Fushimi grumbles and clicks his tongue and Shiro laughs because it seems Fushimi fits right in. (Though then he makes a joke about Fushimi becoming an honorary member of the clan and somehow Munakata sends him a message an hour later politely but firmly asking for Fushimi-kun back because Munakata stole him fair and square thank you.)
Dave Benner
Today in 1776, Gilbert du Motier, more commonly known as Marquis de Lafayette, arranged entry into the Continental Army as a major general.
Born into a rich and prominent French family, Lafayette became convinced that the cause of the states was a noble one. His choice altered the course of history, as he emerged as an American hero that befriended many of the most important people of his time. His decision to fight for the American cause may have been influenced by the death of his father at the hand of the British at the Battle of Minden during the Seven Years’ War.
At first appearing as no different from other foreign soldiers of fortune that entered the war on the side of the American states, Lafayette’s deeds won him incredible admiration. He befriended George Washington, emerged as an able commander, and even played a key role in the French Revolution.
What set Lafayette apart from other foreign soldiers was his candid demeanor. He refused to accept any pay for his services, and explained that his job was to do whatever he could to help Washington and the Continental Army. “I am here to learn, not to teach,” he told Washington. He even committed himself fully to learning English en route to North America.
Despite Lafayette’s eventual popularity, some confusion existed concerning his stature in the army. Congress viewed his commission as an honorary one, but Lafayette considered himself as a true general that would gain control of a division when Washington deemed him ready. In the end, Lafayette complied with Washington’s wishes concerning his leadership, realizing that full command would be impossible given his foreign birth.
Outside of his role in the war, Lafayette did much to influence the course of the war beyond himself. Lafayette used his political influence to secure the deployment of 6,000 French soldiers to North America to be commanded by Jean-Baptiste Rochambeau. In 1779, his wife even gave birth to a son, who they named Georges Washington Lafayette. After his interregnum in France, Lafayette returned to the states to fight again.
Lafayette fought honorably at almost every major battle of the war, including Brandywine, Valley Forge, Monmouth, and Yorktown. With the assistance of Thomas Jefferson, Lafayette even wrote the Declaration of the Rights of Man, France’s declaration of rights. Today, his name is recognized by thousands of streets and parks, where he is possibly the most admired foreign person in the United States.
Introducing:
Brendan and Khloe! Aka Kiki, because I was so upset when I realized she didn't have an actual name. A two in one introduction today!
Practically Aph's siblings, they have essentially taken Aph in as one of them.
Khloe is the towns vet and animal caretaker all around. If something is wrong with your pet, go to her. She'll know what to do. Brendan is also a good bet though, with all his horse knowledge.
Brendan is the main farmer, with Donna being second, and he's also the prominent builder in town. He assists Aph in building her first house and teaches her how to both build and farm.
Both of them are considered honorary members of the wolf tribe that resides outside of Brightport, and they find it so sweet that Aph is considered so too.
I don't think Brendan has experienced anger like when he found out how Zane had treated his sisters. He is the best uncle to Leona ever though.
Eahta mentions that kids Fif's age go to school and he's concerned and Anre and Siete look at each other for a moment. Anre starts that it would be his pleasure to assist in teaching her what he knows and Siete's interrupting like "I gotchu fam" and pulls an all-nighter to design an incredibly detailed curriculum for the kid, because he's insane
They also make sure she gets to spend time with children her age, since socializing is also important for her development
NOOO THAT'S SO CUTE.
the moment they realize it's time for them to raise this child too actually. They can't just let Eahta handle it alone. They're a team. It's as close to a family as it gets.
And honestly for the socializing this is probably what they drag Feower and Tien in for. That explains also Fif's ease in Stardust Town. I'm sure it's been calculated with Feower and Tien having to agree that Fif is an honorary sister of Stardust Town.
That would track.
365 Marvel Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…
November 25th - The Two-Gun Kid
Matthew Leibowitz grew up in Boston around the time of the end of the American Civil War.  He earned a degree in law and traveled out west, changing his name to Matt Hawk and ultimately relocating to Tombstone, Texas where he planned to open a law firm.
Not long after arriving at town, Matt witnessed a group of toughs harassing an elderly man.  Matt attempted to intervene, but the toughs were scared off when the old man revealed himself to be the legendary gunslinger, Ben Dancer.  As thanks for coming to his assistance, Dancer offered to teach Matt the ways of quick-draw gun-fighting.  Matt was a natural and he took to it amazingly well; his incredible aim and ambidexterity made him an especially quick study.
Through his law practice. Matt found that there were many instances where the legal system was failing more vulnerable and disenfranchised peoples.  He decided to do something about it and donned the guise of ‘The Two-Gun Kid,’ a masked gunfighter who fought for justice.
The Two-Gun Kid would have many adventures.  One of these adventures involved the time-traveling villain, Kang The Conquerer, who had transported members of The Avengers to the old west.  The Two-Gun Kid fought alongside The Avengers to defeat Kang and he ended up transported forward in time to the modern era of the 616 Universe.  Here he became an honorary member of The Avengers and traveled the West alongside Hawkeye.
Following further adventures, The Two-Gun Kid returned to his original time and lived out the rest of his days in peace.  The hero first appeared in the page of The Two-Gun Kid #1 (1948).
Hello, hello!
Do you have any fluffy and/or silly headcanons for Falsepretensesshipping (Grimsley x Colress)?
P.s. I hope you're having a great day! ^°^
As a matter of fact, I do! I've wasted so much time thinking about these two in the past few years, so have four very specific headcanons for them:
1. They're the entire Alolan teenage population's honorary Cool Uncles. Grimsley has become sort of famous among the locals for both his Mantine Surf and magic card tricks and his willingness to teach them to anyone who might ask him to, while Colress is the eccentric but polite resident scientist who always rewards trainers for helping him collect research data (which basically just involves having a battle with him or allowing him to take a closer look at your pokemon) with very useful items. They have let runaway young trainers who had had a big fight with their parents/guardians/whatever sleep on their couch before, for as long as it took to settle their disagreement.
2. The reason why they rarely (if ever) bet on the outcome of a game of cards and prefer to put both silly and more serious stakes on pokemon battles instead, is that it would be terribly unfair. How? Well, Colress' poker face is literally non-existent. Or rather – his expression is just blank enough not to betray him, but he has so many other tells (from shaking his head, to fixing his glasses, to clicking his tongue) that even a rookie player would be able to tell when he's bluffing. He beat Grimsley one (1) time at poker and that was it. And even then it was a massive, massive case of beginner's luck.
3. On at least one occasion, Grimsley infiltrates an exclusive scientific convention Colress has been invited to speak at, for no other reason than to see how long he can keep the charade going. He borrows one of Colress' lab coats and boring suits (Grimsley's exact words) and spends an entire evening chatting up other scientist, pretending to be "doctor G, pokébiologist". He's a good enough liar and has absorbed enough scientific vocabulary just from passively listening to Colress ramble about his research that he actually does pretty well, and it takes several hours for people to get suspicious. When he's inevitably escorted out, Colress pretends not to know him.
4. Somewhere down the line, they end up co-owning a Deino. Colress is the one to procure it because he was always fascinated by his previous employer who shall not be named's Hydreigon and wanted to study whether being raised in a more comfortable environment would positively influence its behaviour or whether it's just an extremely violent and aggressive species by nature – you know, the old nature vs nurture conundrum. The best way to do so, of course, would be with the assistance of someone who's already used to working with dark types. Which is where Grimsley comes into play. And he's more than happy to help out, too, since Deino is one of those infamously difficult species to train that any dark type specialist wanting to prove their skill has to tackle, sooner or later in their career. Turns out that a properly trained Deino is indeed less destructive... which does NOT mean the little fiend doesn't rip half of Grimsley's furniture and wardrobe to shreds before learning to answer his commands.
(Thanks for the ask btw! I always love an excuse to ramble about my current favourite ships/characters!)
In Your Colours
Kuroo x f!reader. (no physical features mentioned, but feminine pronouns and terms used)
Soulmarks AU (Soulmarks appear when you touch someone who will have a strong bond with you, platonic as well as romantic. You can’t tell which it is when the mark appears, sometimes the meaning changes, marks can fade etc.)
You were 5 when you first met Ushijima. Your first soul mark, a purple flower on your inner arm where he’d pulled you up from the ground. It was unusual, they don’t usually occur within families except in exceptional cases, but your mother and “auntie” are pleased the two of you will get along so well. He tried to teach you volleyball. You sucked.
You were 13 when the accident happened and you moved in with your cousin, no other family left. Your piano filled future over, left hand broken so badly that even after healing it never moved the same way again.
You were 15 when you met Tendou. Reading manga in the corner of a classroom. You weren't afraid of him like other people, you talked manga and volleyball. He left a red question mark on your wrist where he’d pulled you along to look at his manga collection and you soon found yourself hoping that he was your true soulmate.
You started hanging around the volleyball club after school on days your club finished early or wasn't on, waiting for Toshi to walk home with you after some incidents with other kids.
You were 16 when they named you honorary assistant manager. Your club had been cancelled and you had been helping set up and distribute towels and water for weeks. You finally felt at home at school.
You were 16 when your heart was broken for the first time. You know Tendou and your cousin got along really well, thought their marks were those of close friendship, but then you walked in on Wakatoshi pushing Tendou up against the wall of the club room, their lips pressed together. You felt your heart shatter, but the mark didn’t fade, you were still best friends after all.
You were 17 when Semi decided he liked you. You had a few more titles by then, Tendou wrangler, Ushijima whisperer (the 2nd, Tendou insisted on being the first), mini mother and catch champion. It had been "face catch champion" for a while, but after one of Ushijimas stray balls nearly broke your nose you had swiftly improved your catching technique. It was practically a sixth sense now, the day you'd managed to block one with your hand without looking up from your issue of Shonen Jump applause had broken out. It was entirely luck but you weren't planning to tell them that. Semi didn’t leave a mark on you, but he was handsome and kind and wound up Tendou in the funniest ways. He didn’t comment when he caught you staring at the red haired middle blocker and you didn’t mention the way his eyes drifted to the vice captain (and on occasion their other setter). It might not have been an ideal relationship, but it was a balm that soothed your raw edges, for both of you you hoped. And he let you play keyboard while he played bass in his free time (you expected it to hurt more, that your playing was nowhere near the level it used to be with your scarred hand and lack of practice, but it felt good to play again and apparently you were still good enough to surprise Semi which was… nice.)
You were 17 the first time you really saw the two men who would change your life too. It was a volleyball camp of sorts, you were watching the team when you saw them. You thought you vaguely recognised the silver and black hair, probably from other matches you'd seen, but this was the first time you truly paid attention.  "Who are those two?" You called to a nearby person. "Bokuto and Kuroo, Furukodani and Nekoma captains. Why?" You grinned, burning the names into your memory. "No reason, just thought I recognised them." The other manager didn't look convinced but waved it off, leaving you to watch the players (and definitely not stare at the two captains while debating with yourself whether it was worth trying to exchange numbers with them. Did they even like girls? They seemed close, were they dating or just friends?). An alarmed shout of your name caught your attention, whirling towards the sound of your cousin's voice to see the ball flying towards you. Caught off guard and already a bit off balance, you slipped off the bench, landing on your back on the floor with the volleyball between your hands.  "Got it!" You yelled, dissolving into hysterical giggles. Semi was the first to your side, staring down at you as if you'd completely lost your mind. Perhaps you had. But shock tended to make you laugh, so it wasn't all your fault. Tendou arrived soon after with a sigh of "SemiSemi you're useless" as he took the ball from you and passed it over before wrapping an arm around you and hauling you to your feet. "Y/N are you okay?" Toshi was there, stoic as ever despite the worry that flickered in his eyes.  "I thought you'd stopped trying to break my nose Toshi?" You gave him a weak smile. "I'll be okay, just hurt my hands. And my pride." You glanced over to where the two captains had been, only to find them gone. Something in your heart sank as you realised it, and your face flushed at the idea you'd made a fool of yourself in front of them. "We will take you to the medic to get checked over. Your hands are…" He didn't need to finish, after they found out about the accident everyone worried about how fragile your hands were.
You were 18 when fate decided you should meet again. When Kuroo left a red mark the shape of an atom on your left shoulderblade, the familiar heat appearing as he tapped you to get your attention during a chemistry lab (one that you were struggling with, you had declared organic synthesis was your mortal enemy three weeks into the first semester). “Hey, aren’t you the girl Ushijima knocked out with a stray serve last summer?” You turn and narrow your eyes at him. “I caught it, Toshi hasn’t knocked me out with a serve for years. You must have been distracted by the owl, it was very impressive.” He barks out a frankly horrific hyena laugh and shakes his head. “I must have been, I could have sworn we saw you tumble backwards off the bench.” Your cheeks flush at that. “I still caught it.” It comes out a little petulant but you couldn’t care less. “And if you’re going to insult my catching abilities the least you could do is help me with this stupid reaction.” He’s still grinning that stupid sly grin, but he does help. And he keeps helping, the two of you work well together, he’s good at the synthesis while you have titres and analysis down to a fine art. You swear you see his whole face light up in delight the first time you laugh at one of his terrible science jokes, throwing one back at him without missing a beat, and you wonder for the second time in your life if maybe this soulmark is the one. There would be worse soulmates out there than Kuroo Tetsuro you reason.
You’re 19 when you move in with Kuroo and his housemates, your own too much for you to deal with and he’s heard enough of your complaints to side with you. It’s nice, purely platonic, but nice. Kenma is quiet and Daichi does an excellent job of keeping you all in line. Still, Kuroo flirts and you allow yourself to sink into the feeling that it could be more, how much you want it to be more. His dorky science jokes still made you laugh, but the laughter was accompanied by a fluttering in your chest.
You’re 20 the first time your cousin comes to visit you at uni, his hectic schedule in the pro leagues finally easing enough to allow him to visit. He brings Tendou and for the first time it doesn’t hurt at all. He approves of your housemates, recognising more than a few from competitions back in high school. His smile is genuine as he tells you how happy he is to see you smiling again. Temdou nods happily beside him, all the while throwing all kinds of questions at Kuroo. Still, they both seem satisfied when they leave, and Kuroo looks almost as proud as you’ve ever seen him.
You’re 21, waiting for your graduation ceremony, when you finally meet Kuroo’s partner in crime in person. You’ve spoken to him often over video chats when you’ve been in the room with Kuroo, but in person Bokuto really is something else. All energy and smiles. He doesn’t leave his mark on you, but all the same by the time the ceremony and afterparty held back at the house are over you’re firm friends and co-conspirators. You don’t realise at the time just how important Bokuto’s support will be in your life, but you’re glad to have it nonetheless.
You’re 25 and standing at the altar, trying to hold back your tears of joy as Kuroo Tetsuro repeats his vows. Heart fluttering in your chest as you think of how much things had changed since his confession weeks after graduation. In the audience you can see Tendou crying, Toshi sat beside him looking misty-eyed as your aunt clutches her tissues in her hand. Kenma sits as far away from the somehow smiling and sobbing Bokuto as possible, though his lips are turned up at the corners despite his attempts to seem unmoved. Your other former housemates are there as well, and you’re pretty sure half of the high school volleyball teams in Miyagi and Tokyo have tried to squeeze in there somewhere. When your lips finally meet Tetsuro’s for the first time as husband and wife you’re pretty sure the cheers from the room could be heard across Japan. Warmth bubbles up inside you as your heart finally feels complete.
James Murray, first editor of the Oxford English Dictionary paased away on July 26th 1915.
A couple of things that I love about this, 1; a Scot was the first editor of the most famous English dictionary, a 2; the picture of Murray, he just looks the part!
He was certainly something of a prodigy as a child, despite his humble background. Born in the Borders village of Denholm, near Hawick, the son of a tailor, he reputedly knew his alphabet by the time he was eighteen months old, and was soon showing a precocious interest in other languages, including—at the age of 7—Chinese.
Thanks to his voracious appetite for reading, and what he called ‘a sort of mania for learning languages’, he was already a remarkably well-educated boy by the time his formal schooling ended, at the age of 14, with a knowledge of French, German, Italian, Latin, and Greek, oh and of course Gaelic, along with a range of other interests, including botany, geology, and archaeology. After a few years teaching in local schools—he was evidently a born teacher, and was made a headmaster at the age of 21—he moved to London, and took work in a bank.
e soon began to attend meetings of the London Philological Society, and threw himself into the study of dialect and pronunciation—an interest he had already developed while still in Scotland—and also of the history of English. In 1870 an opening at Mill Hill School, just outside London, enabled him to return to teaching. He began studying for an external London BA degree, which he finished in 1873, the same year as his first big scholarly publication, a study of Scottish dialects which was widely recognized as a pioneering work in its field and was the first ever sustained history of the Scots tongue.
Only a year later his linguistic research had earned him his first honorary degree, a doctorate from Edinburgh University: quite an achievement for a self-taught man of 37.
In 1876 Murray was approached by the London publishers Macmillans about the possibility of editing a dictionary, he accepted the challenged and it was generally thought the publication would take around ten years to complete and run to 6,400 pages, in four volumes, he undertook the work while still teaching at Mill Hill, although he did enlist help in several assistants.
Five years later- no- he hadn’t finished it, he was a genius but not that much, they published the first volume, A-Ant, to steal the words from a future film, they were going to need a bigger book!“ The team sent out the call for volunteers all across the country. one American man, William Chester Minor, even responded from his prison cell in Broadmoor while serving a life sentence for murder. still suffered from paranoid delusions, some saw his work on the Oxford English Dictionary as a form of therapy. Minor became a regular collaborator with Murray as he sent his notes to the editor every week for 20 years. Every letter Minor signed with the closing, “Broadmoor, Crowthorne, Berkshire.
Murray soon had to give up his school teaching, and moved to Oxford in 1885; even then progress was too slow, and eventually three other Editors were appointed, each with responsibility for different parts of the alphabet. Although for more than three-quarters of the time he worked on the OED there were other Editors working alongside him—he eventually died in 1915—and although he had a staff of assistants helping him, it is without question that he was the Editor of the Dictionary.
It was not until 1928 that C. T. Onions and William Craigie finally finished the main text. In terms of the methodology he developed, The Oxford English Dictionary is largely Murray’s creation; as the ‘Historical Introduction’ to the OED states, ‘to Murray belongs the credit for giving it, at the outset, a form which proved to be adequate to the end’.
In his private life Murray married an Ada Agnes Ruthven and they found time to have 11 children together, all of whom reached adulthood, and unusual occurrence back then. Some even helped him in the compilation of the OED. The last pic is great and shows him astride a huge ‘sand-monster’ constructed on the beach during one of the family’s holidays in North Wales.
He was never made a Fellow of an Oxford college, to their shame, and only received an Oxford honorary doctorate the year before his death.
He died of pleurisy on this day 1915 and requested to be buried in Oxford beside the grave of his best friend, James Legge
