Just Leave a Comment Fest 2022
This is the second half of my Just Leave a Comment Fest results, with the first one being the Danganronpa one that you can find here. I’ve seen a lot of people posting their totals with link recommendations based on what they read, so I’ve decided to do that too, but divide it up based on my two main fandoms!
Overall, though, I got a grand total of 25. I know a lot of people have been doing numbers like this or higher in a day, but I’ve been a bit more sociable this week, so I’ve made my goal for next year to increase that number a lot more! Even if I didn’t average as many as others, though, I’ve gotten about 14 replies so far from excited authors, and that warms my heart.
But, without further ado, here are all of my Fire Emblem-themed recommendations based on “Just Leave a Comment Fest 2022” (and please be warned of spoilers!):
• “Petals in Open Palms” by lesbianexalt - A FE Awakening based Sumia/Cordelia one-shot, centred around Cordelia trying to come to terms with the appearance of Cynthia, and how her love will never be requited… The build-up in this one is immaculate, and does a great job of making you feel for the positions that both Cynthia and Cordelia are in. The exploration of complex emotions is done so well that I think this story could appeal to fans regardless of what their shipping preferences are. Just a really lovely fic, honestly.
• “Where the Heart Is” by QuoteMyFoot - A FE Echoes AU multi-chapter story, where instead of Celica being discovered, Mycen is able to kill Slayde and his men and keep her under their protection. Thus, she grows up with the other Ram Village kids, knowing her destiny in the back of her mind, but unable to truly say anything. The author has expressed that updates may be slow going and it may be unpolished just because they are in and out of burnout for it, but the agency it grants Celica is absolutely spectacular, and the way the character relationships are written lends so well to the narrative.
• “Reading” by SwiftWhiskers - A FE Echoes one-shot centred around the young Ram Village kids. Alm is having some trouble learning to read (implied dyslexia), so his friends devise a plan to try and help him learn. This fic is cute and fluffy, and perfect for someone who just wants to read about a little moment of happiness. Personally, I know I’ll never get enough of the Ram Village kids loving each other, so I thought this one was just perfect.
• “Close Scrutiny” by Mystery_Of_The_Emblem - A FE Fates one-shot set in Revelation about Saizo trying to have fun at the first Nohr-Hoshido party. He starts it off spying, but when Kaze catches him and points out how badly it would reflect on Ryoma if he were to be caught, Saizo has to change up his tactics on how he will go about collecting information. The author’s creative way of approaching Saizo’s relationship struggles were so fun, and the humour added from the brotherly relationships even more so. This one would please any Saizo fan with ease, even managing to show a little character development for him!
• “A Moment of Silence” by MotaroKahn - A FE Fates one-shot, set in no particular route, where Gunter reflects on the loss of his wife and child through the building is a snowman. This one is bittersweet, but damn, does it do the bittersweetness well. Getting to read Gunter’s reflections firsthand as he builds this snowman, this product of his love and his pain, help establish this tone. At times it might be easy to forget how lonely Gunter truly is, but this author is sure to write in a way that ensures that you might remember a little more often.
• “Bedtime Stories” by fayesdiary ( @fayesdiary ) - A FE Awakening one-shot containing Chrom/Robin and their little family, where Chrom and Robin are desperately searching for a new story to tell their little ones after they have finished Tales of Hoshido, Nohr, and the Invisible Kingdom. This story is full of adorable Lucina and Morgan content as cute little kids, and also features several fun references to other Fire Emblem titles, which is perfect for any long-standing FE fan.
• “Lantern” by pronz69 - A FE Fates one-shot about Jakob’s backstory, detailing how he went from the rejected child of two nobles to one of Corrin’s closest confidants. One thing I really loved about this one was that it did a good job of preserving the tragedy of Jakob’s backstory, while also maintaining his sharper personality traits. It really establishes him as an interesting character, because while most of his early relationships were not formed on kindness or respect, it shows that when it comes down to it, he values it deeply. He’s reluctant to trust at first, of course, but “Lantern” proves that Jakob truly is just a person who wants to be loved…
• “Talking” by NoFunctionalSaveButton - A FE Three Houses one-shot set at the end of Verdant Wind, in which Claude and Rhea get to finally sit down and have a conversation about her past — and encourage each other to live. This one is an emotional but fun establishment of culture, one establishing the histories and cultural practices of the Nabateans and the Almyrans. It digs deep into the potential connection between Claude and Rhea, and serves as a means of exploration for the part of Claude that does want to give Rhea the benefit of the doubt as a person. This one is honestly just really great, and I must confess, this is not the first time I have read it. It’s worth a read and reread any time.
• “Fall” by May_Aboreal - A FE Three Houses one-shot set during Crimson Flower, but on the Golden Deer’s side. This piece is about the death of Hilda and her last moments before she dies, thinking of Claude and her beloved Marianne, and what is to come next. This story is so beautifully descriptive, and manages to encapsulate the relationships between Hilda and her two loved ones with such power.
• “Everything is a Sweet Revelation” by theatrhythms - A FE Echoes College AU one-shot, focused on Gray/Tobin and Mae/Boey. To be more specific, actually, it’s about Mae and Gray trying to figure out as a duo how they’re supposed to act now that they’ve started dating one of their best friends in the world. Clever, charming, and accurate, this one is just a straight up pleasure to read for anyone who’s a fan of these two pairings.
• “Floriography” by luminioux - A FE Three Houses Marianne/Hilda College AU. This one is actually a challenge one-shot, where the author could only use three sentences to tell their story. Each of those three sentences is used damn near perfectly, with a clear understanding of both Hilda and Marianne’s characters, and an extremely entertaining picture of what their lives together would look like as college girls.
• “Spilt Milk” by Steelport - A FE Fates one-shot written for Felicia/F Corrin. This fic lovingly tackles Felicia’s self-esteem issues in relation to her relationship with Corrin, and how she feels like she will never be good enough for her. So overwhelmed by her feelings, Felicia runs away, only to find out that… maybe things weren’t exactly as she always saw them. It’s a serious depiction of Felicia’s clumsiness and emotional struggle, and a comforting romance that confronts just how important the two girls are to each other.
• “From Dawn to Dusk” by MahNati - A FE Fates multi-chapter written for Siegbert/Shiro. I’ve already raved about this once or twice before, but I cannot recommend it enough. Set after Conquest, it follows Shiro’s journey to become the next king of Hoshido through visits back and forth to Nohr and meetings with Siegbert… until news comes that the long lost Fujin Yumi has suddenly been recovered in Nohrian territory. This fic is an awesome confrontation of the Shiro/Siegbert relationship with good development, and does just about as much with relationships like Hinoka & Shiro and Xander & Siegbert without even having to try that hard. The characterizations are crisp and powerful, and the whole story is one I have read more than once. It’s still updating fairly regularly, too, so you have lots to look forward to!

The Cast of Danganronpa 21 and What They Would Want as a Gift for the Holidays:
The Nevermind Family:
Sonia Nevermind: Occult books or books on unresolved cases. Basically, just get Sonia some books on her favourite subjects. She’ll bury her nose in them all day and be very happy. You may occasionally get her to pay attention to you with the promise of snacks, but expect to hear all about what she read in all of its potentially gory detail. Still, her smile is so totally worth it.
Gundham Nevermind: Of all things, you could get away with giving Gundham some neat-looking jewelry. He’d love anything he could accessorize with, and if you make up a story to go along with it, he would probably be overjoyed. He would thank you greatly for conquering a beast on his behalf, and wear his gift with great pride. Honestly, he would probably insist on showing it off to others, too.
Phoenix Nevermind: Perhaps it might seem a bit childish, but Phoenix would really like to get a plush animal for the holidays. He collects them, you see, and he treasures every one he has. Giving it to him is also a great pleasure because he remembers every plush that has ever been given to him by another person. So if you give him one, he’ll definitely think of you every time he sees or snuggles it.
The Kuzuryuu Family:
Fuyuhiko Kuzuryuu: Perhaps he doesn’t seem like the type, but he’d actually love framed photographs. Particularly of Peko, his daughter, or his sister. With everything that happened during the Tragedy, he wants to hold onto all of the things that he has. So framed pictures are perfect for him; he’ll hang them proudly in his home to show off his favourite memories and people.
Peko Kuzuryuu: A pair of warm, fuzzy socks. Despite being married to an ex-Yakuza heir, Peko finds she doesn’t need much to be pleased. If you would be willing to pick her up some fuzzy socks in pretty colours, she’d be delighted. She’d put them on right away and show them off to everyone, still quiet as ever but with a soft smile on her face. If you wanted to get her a fuzzy animal instead, though, she also wouldn’t object.
Natsumi Kuzuryuu: Super easy to please — get her a bag of sour candy. The more sour it is, the better. Any sort of candy of that caliber tends to be her favourite snack and she goes through them quickly, so it’s an awesome idea for a present. If you want to go a little more sentimental, though, she would treasure a collection of pressed flowers. She would probably get them framed to put in her bedroom or dorm.
The Naegi-Kirigiri Family:
Makoto Naegi-Kirigiri: If anything, Makoto would love an experience as a gift. Preferably something he can take his wife and kids out to do, but he’s okay with solo escapades. Tickets to see a play, a reservation for an escape room, a pottery class... He would love any of these things! He’d thank you a million times no matter what you gave him, but something like this might earn you more hugs.
Kyoko Naegi-Kirigiri: Maybe it’s a tad predictable, but she would like some new gloves. It’s so easy for gloves to get grubby, especially after having them for a few years, so she’d love a new pair. If possible, she’d like to keep them understated and still purple. If you were to purchase some for her, she would be overjoyed. You’d definitely get that gentle grin and a sincere thank you. She’d think of her giver every time she wears them.
Hope Naegi-Kirigiri: Some new make-up would go along way with Hope. Sure, she’s technically a costume designer first and foremost, but she likes to experiment with make-up a lot. Part of good costumes is having good make-up to go with it. She’d love to experiment with SFX, or even just play around with a palette of a fun colours to bring her great joy. Although, there’s a pretty good chance that you would have to be her test subject.
Koichi Naegi-Kirigiri: So there’s a running tradition for Koichi’s gifts among his loved ones. The tradition is that every year, one loved one gets him something penguin-themed. His childhood fixation on them made for a lot of stuff themed around the chilly bird, so it turned into a running gag. It’s a roulette to see who will get to give the penguin gift each year. If it’s not you, consider picking up some manga for him instead. Fitting his “normal kid” background, he’s pretty into shounen. Anything more niche is definitely a plus. He’s too sarcastic for big fandoms. People would get mad at him.
Seiko Naegi-Kirigiri: A puppy or kitty please please please. She would promise that she’d feed it and snuggle it and take such good care of it. Mommy and Daddy would surely agree to it! Can she have one, pretty please? If you can’t get her one, then she would like some tasty snacks and some mystery manga. Although all that would be cooler with a puppy or kitty...
The Hagakure Family:
Yasuhiro Hagakure: A replacement crystal ball. Really though, he’d love a copy of a documentary on OOPArts. The various theories and artifacts would entertain him for days, and he’d happily discuss his own theories on where they came from. You’d get a big thank you and probably a “man, you know me so well!”
Kanon Hagakure: Work-out equipment, actually. Even after ending her training with her cousin, Kanon tried to keep up with her workout routines. If you wanted to get her something new to work with, she’d be extremely grateful. Otherwise, she might like a cute piece of jewelry. Something understated that she can wear to work, but is still charming. A necklace would be preferable, but she loves bracelets, too!
Leon Hagakure: Believe it or not, Leon’s pretty into mountain biking. His old bike has been getting a little clunky, so any new accessories for him to fix it up would be super helpful. It might seem a little weird to give someone bike pieces, but he’d like it a whole lot. Worst case scenario, give him a free paint job for the bike. He likes to change it up every once in awhile, so it’d be satisfying for him.
Kameyo Hagakure: It’s a super classic little girl gift: new dolls. If possible, she’d really like to get a doll that looks like her. A doll with cute dark curls and skin the same pretty colour as hers, maybe decked out with ribbons and cute dresses. If you were to get her one, she would probably squeal and jump up and down with delight. Many thanks would go to you for such a gift.
The Asahina Family:
Aoi Asahina: New work-out clothes! Due to how sporty she is, she tends to go through them pretty fast. They tear and wear out and start to smell beyond return, so if you got her some new ones... she’d be delighted! She’d wear them over and over again until she wore them out, too. She’d probably love them the most out of all of her workout clothes, because they were a gift.
Sakura Asahina: This is awfully specific, but Sakura would very much like a cookie scoop. You know, so she can have healthy servings of cookies in an organized way. Supplies for making those cookies would also be much appreciated. She likes to try different recipes, so if you got her a little homemade “cookie kit”, she’d also be really happy. Baking supplies of any kind are an excellent choice for Sakura.
The Togami Family:
Byakuya Togami: Coffee grounds from France. Presumably expensive coffee grounds from France. You probably wouldn’t get a thank you, but maybe a compliment on your taste and expressive appreciation of the gift. If you’re really, really lucky... he might even offer you a cup.
Junichi Togami: Astronomy books. He loves the night sky, and he would love to be able to track the stars and hear the stories people would tell about them. He would probably stay up reading long past his bedtime with a flash light, sitting under his bedsheets. Maybe he’d even wriggle out of bed to go follow along in his book, and check the stars he sees.

FOR MY DANGANRONPA QUESTIONNAIRE. 3, 5, 14, 17, 21, 22, 26, 32
THANK YOU :D I’ve been going through the games again(mostly to get a handle on trial pacing) so I have Thoughts. This is a bit long so sorry about that WHOOPS.
3. Is Sayaka a bad character?
I mean... I don’t think so? I’m not a fan of her, but she serves her purpose in the story well and her reasoning is understandable and clear. Besides that though, there really just isn’t a lot to her and I find her a bit boring.
5. Did Ishimaru deserve to die?
Absolutely not. I love him. I mean, the majority of people in danganronpa don’t *deserve* to die, but I loved Ishimaru and though his death wasn’t terribly hard to see coming I was very sad. Besides my bias though, he was the only character in DR1 who I felt really showed how hard they were grieving and it would’ve been very interesting to see him last.
14. Does Hiyoko have depth?
HONESTLY at first I didn’t think so, but I’ve been watchin some letsplayers who like her and it’s given me a new perspective. So I think she does! I think she’s just a kid who has some major anxiety issues and lashes out a lot. And she just kinda got kicked around during the story and then died before she could grow. I will always be bitter that she never got a character arc but it happens in stories like this.
17. Is Mikan deep as a character or just edgy?
Mikan is honestly a character who I keep going back and forth on. Like... I honestly don’t really know! While I’ve been given more chances to look into Hiyoko’s character, I haven’t really done that with Mikan. I don’t really think she’s just edgy, but I don’t really know how deep she is either? It’s just Funky.
21. Should the protag switch have happened?
I think so. Shuichi is one of my favorite protags. I really relate to him and his arc is my favorite of the protags, as well as top 3 in the series. He’s just real good. However, I felt that Kaede had a lot of potential as a character in general, and it’s a shame that she died so quickly.
22. Who is the better protagonist - Shuichi or Kaede?
Again, Shuichi is one of my favorite protagonists. I really enjoyed Kaede, and I loved how unique and confident she was compared to other protags. But again, I love Shuichi’s arc a lot and I can’t really imagine the game without it! Not to mention that he makes the most sense as protag when it comes to the game's theme and his arc ties into that. I just love him a lot.
26. Chapter 3 is a turning point in Himiko’s development. Did you like how Himiko changed during/after chapter 3?
I do like Himiko’s development! It makes a lot of sense! A thing that’s especially apparent in DR is that people are the most open to change when they’re at their lowest. And I gotta admit. Himiko isn’t among my most favorite characters, but I mean. I could stand to take some of Tenko’s advice sometimes, and it was nice to see her start to care more and express herself more!
32. Is v3′s ending any good?
I’m personally not the biggest fan. I don’t hate it as much as when I first got through it, but it’s not really a twist I tend to enjoy anyways. I can appreciate it for what it is though, I suppose. I tend to just choose to think Tsumugi was lying anyways, as there’s decent evidence for it. Besides the obvious fiction part though, I thought Tsumugi was an interesting mastermind(I do like her better than Junko), if not a tad obvious.

Yo you should answer all of these scene questions👀👀
:OOO
you think so lad???? shit dawg i was thinkin just a few at a time but if that what u want my dear nonnie i will supply
1. wats ur scene name?
i was thinkin maybe ‘gods mistake’ would be a good one but then. i found a way to make it both danganronpa related, and, even better, a fucking pun as well. ‘kamukura kamukura jasqueen’, or just ‘kamukura jasqueen’ for short is good k thxxx
2. describe ur dream outfit!
oooo gosh this ones trickyy!! there are so many good outfits out there, especially in the scene community!! but it’d have to have a few tiny elements of dr cosplay to add a lil of my dangan-weeb culture in there ofc! more specifically, id really love to get one of kazuichis jumpsuit and just wig out and add shit like this just because i could:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(id just rlly love going out in all those glowy/shiny things at night like all that haha..and yes the shoes would probably kill me/my fuckin feet if i tried to walk in them but shut up i love them theyre cute as fuck)

(This isn’t the moment Kokichi falls into despair. This is the moment he figures out that everything is fiction.) I think this is a bit of hindsight bias. I mean, just because Kokichi figures out something is a lie doesn't mean that it's purely for entertainment. That wasn't the case for dr1, after all? It absolutely was apocalyptic as hell out there, and Tsumugi could easily be lying about it being a "set" as well as peoples talents being fake (case in point Miu, no way in hell was hers fake)
Also about Hope's Peak like, even Shuichi doubts that it's fiction in the end? I doubt Kokichi would ever come to that conclusion when he had the book in his lab, and for a special reason? And yeah, people may have enjoyed the game and screwed with them, but that doesn't mean it's just about the outside world or whatever but the organization responsible for arranging this (TDR) since they're really corrupt and sadistic. Idk, I feel like there's a lot more to this judging from the evidence
Sorry if this is flooding you I'm just really bothered because you said it's 'the only thing that makes sense' and I'm like nooooo, no no no no it's not?? There's more worth looking at especially around Kokichi, it's super vague about him even in the end
(If this is the same anon as before, thank you for being more polite about it this time! I am quite happy to have a legitimate discussion about this.)
Okay, so, of course, this whole commentary is running under the assumption that everything is fiction because that's my interpretation of the story. The awkward thing about that for people who aren't necessarily ready to buy that interpretation is that most of the parts where I get to actually discuss why that's my interpretation happen towards the end of the story. Until then, I'm just kind of casually assuming it's the case without getting much chance to back it up, at least if I don't want to go off on massive tangents unrelated to what's actually going on. I'll be talking a lot more about this in chapter 6 (and a little bit in chapter 5) when we reach the parts where the narrative starts actively focusing on all of this. Hopefully then it'll become clearer why I think what I do. (Hopefully. I’m not quite so far ahead in writing this that I’ve reached chapter 6 yet, so I don't know exactly what I'm going to say when I get there, but.)
I acknowledge that my interpretation isn't the only possible one and that there are some holes in it. I talked about a few of these during the prologue and also briefly mentioned the talent thing when we saw Angie's waxworks. But the thing is, I'm pretty sure there isn't any single interpretation which has absolutely no holes in it. I've certainly never seen one which doesn't make me go "okay, but what about this, though". Not even mine, admittedly, yes.
I choose to go with my interpretation for two reasons, the first being that, in my opinion, it has the most supporting evidence and the fewest holes. (And most of the holes it does have can be put down to the fact that the out-universe writers probably couldn't do much about them if this was the story they wanted to tell. For example, the pregame characters being kidnapped and then so slow on the uptake about being in Danganronpa is awkward, but the alternative, assuming this is the truth of the story that the out-universe writers are trying to tell, is either that they make it very clear what's going on and spoil the entire plot twist for the out-universe audience before the story's even begun, or we don't get to see the pregame characters in the prologue at all and therefore have no potential proof that there even was a "pregame", which would make it seem even more likely that Tsumugi was lying about that.)
But my second and probably more important reason I go with this interpretation is simply because I like the story best this way. I love metanarratives, and I find it absolutely fascinating to think about and discuss the ways that this being treated as a story within the story affects how things go. If this wasn't something that I could genuinely believe is the truth of the story, I wouldn't like Danganronpa V3 anywhere near as much as a narrative and wouldn't have as much fun talking about it to the point that I might not even be doing this commentary.
Obviously not everyone's going to feel the way that I do, and that's fine. But I think it's perfectly valid for me to use "this is what I want to believe" as a reason to believe it when that's an actual message that the story promotes. The narrative towards the end makes a point of the idea that sometimes you can never be sure what's a lie and what's the truth. That's almost certainly why Kokichi as a character is as ambiguously presented as he is (as much as I keep expressing my frustration at the lack of a concrete backstory explaining why Kokichi is the way he is, I do understand that the writers did it for this purpose, even if the result is that it makes me less able to like him), and why the plot itself is so ambiguous and there are multiple interpretations that are plausible. The player is basically invited to choose whichever interpretation they want to, so that's what I'm doing.
I gave you this general speech instead of addressing some of your specific points since I'm going to be talking about most of those points in more detail later when they come up in the main commentary (and I'd be happy to discuss them further through asks if you still want to once we get there). I will talk a bit about Kokichi here, though, since I won't be doing so later - because I'm honestly a little confused as to why you appear to be so sure that Kokichi is the key to figuring out the whole truth of the story. It seems apparent to me that the reason things are so vague and ambiguous about him even at the end is simply because the narrative purpose of his character is to be an embodiment of that theme about lies and truth, like I just discussed, not because the real truth about him would somehow give any answers about anything important. Kokichi is just as in the dark as any other character except for Tsumugi, and anything he might figure out is nothing but a guess. I admit that when I said "the only thing that makes sense" re Kokichi's view on the outside world, I was running under my assumption that everything is fiction, and, yes, him having hypothetically guessed that doesn't prove anything about what's really out there. That entire point of mine was less about using Kokichi to back up my interpretation of the real truth of the situation, and more about using my assumption of the real truth of the situation to back up Kokichi's state of mind. I still stand by my observation that the comments Kokichi makes in that scene do seem to be hinting that he thinks everything is not only a lie but specifically fiction, though, regardless of whether or not he's right about it.
I'm also not sure what Hope's Peak has to do with Kokichi, since Kokichi never learns about it at all. He never sees inside his own lab, so he never gets to read that book. Even if Hope's Peak was real, his memories of it would have been just as wiped as everyone else's, and he never gets exposed to that one Flashback Light.

Opinion on each zanki zero character?
While I’m here, I should also answer this fantastic ask:
Anonymous said: Are the Zanki Zero characters names as stupid as Danganronpa character names? ‘cause one of the characters is named after a type of tractor
I also need to post my feelings on ZZ in general, but so far it’s pretty cool. The characters aren’t really out of their introductory shallow stages yet but they show promise. I don’t care what the haters say, I find Extend TV amusing. The game’s premise is cool, the 3D character models look nice, and the system of exploring new islands that wash up as dungeons to gather resources and get story beats is cool.
This may be the closest thing I get to DanRon Mystery Dungeon.
While I normally don’t like stories where death is impermanent, this seems like it will tackle more the psychological strain of immortality and the goal will be to get your zanki (extra lives) to zero, linking the end/goal of the game to the way it started: with suicide. If so, I’m here for that.
Anyway, my thoughts on the characters.
Minor Spoilers!
Higurashi Haruto - Basic SpikeChun VN protag so far: kinda bland, ahoge, etc. I do like his glasses, though, and the fact he was an editor. That’s a unique detail. Aside from oversleeping once, hasn’t exhibited much slothfulness, unless you count his inability to act when he and Susukino took a ride on the Tentacle Express. As for his suicide attempt (completion?), I suspect that’s true of everyone, not just Higurashi.
How Stupid Is That Name?Low. Higurashi means living hand-to-mouth, which is very on the nose for this situation (also likely a reference to that other VN series…). Haruto, like all the given names in this game, doesn’t have kanji, so it’s a bit tough to assign specific meaning to it. You could write it as 温人, for instance, which would mean “warm person”. Both names are real names, and fairly common at that.
Hirasaka Sachika - All I can say is, thank god she has a side besides “adowable widdle gurl!” because I am not a fan of that. It is cool to have a disabled character though. So far aside from Higurashi being a bit tactless and presumptive, it’s been handled fairly well? Sachika’s clearly extremely intelligent, likely playing everyone (she’s the one who urges everyone to go inside Mashiro Garden Tower), and appears to be the only character who doesn’t age. Since she’s original sin, wouldn’t that make her knowledge? Interesting…
How Stupid Is That Name?Moderately stupid. Hirasaka is a real name, but if it’s written that way, it’s pretty rare. The kanji used are “compare, good, hill” which you could take as comparing how well the others reform and atone for their sins. Sachika is indeed a name, and it could include a bunch of different kanji, including the ones for “happiness” or “knowledge”. Sachika’s name is what I’d consider to be the DR standard level of stupid.
Mikajime Ryou - His design was one of the ones I was the least interested in, but so far he’s been pretty amusing. I hope he doesn’t end up typecast as the “protag’s best buddy” type from DR. Real jealousy explored in a game like this would be pretty dope though.
How Stupid Is That Name?Well, as far as I know, Mikajime is not a real name, so we’re already treading pretty silly waters. The kanji basically come out to read “three flowers tied up” which is fitting the theme. Ryou is a very, very common male name, though if I had to hazard a guess here, I’d say it’s in reference to 量, which means “quantity” (as in, how much you have in the way of resources, and could feed into the envy theme).
Susukino Rinko - As is often the case with things like this, I like her design but her archetype is one that puts my teeth on edge. Please shake this Yamato Nadeshiko BS please, girl. Also, assign Lust to the beefcake dude, you cowards! I did like that I chose her and Higurashi as my least faves that I’d be cool with killing to complete the cloning mission, and lo!
How Stupid Is That Name?Susuki is the Japanese name for Chinese Silver Grass/Zebra Grass, which is already pretty silly given that she’s a florist. The “no” part means field, so duh on that, but it often gets used in dumb animanga names to stand in for the particle の which will make it a possessive. The reason I bring this up is because susuki is sometimes called “maiden grass” and Susukino’s sin is Lust. While Susukino isn’t a real surname as far as I can tell, it is the name of a neighborhood in Yokohama! Rinko’s a pretty normal lady name with the ko almost always being “child” while the Rin part can be all kinds of stuff, like forest, cold, and interestingly enough, ethics. …it also rhymes with one of the Japanese words for “penis”.
Kubota Zen - I am sad that this guy will likely become the Cursed Character of this game, because I actually find him pretty interesting. It’s always great to have a wild card in the mix, and while he’s being a little too openly Komaeda/Ouma-like in this instigator department, it seems more clearly to come from a distinctly different place than either of them. I dig it.
How Stupid Is That Name?Look at this fucking normal-ass name. Sure, the Ku part of Kubota isn’t the usual one, instead being swapped for the legal version of 9 (…suffering…), and yeah, Kubota is a brand of tractor, and okay, it’s a bit openly ironic to have your Wrath character named Zen, but honestly this is one of the least surprising names here. (It could also be one of the other zens, like the one from nature or something.)
Setouchi Minamo - The only thing stopping me from fully embracing this character as my fave is the fact that Nate likes her best. Design? Fantastic. Lady cop? Hell yes. Speaks in Osaka-ben?! FUCK YEAH. I like that she’s Pride, too, which is considered the worst one of the bunch (aside from knowledge, I guess) since she seems like she’s so…Asahina-like. Setouchi is a fucking cutie and I love her, the end. Pride Month, baby.
How Stupid Is That Name?I swear to god, her last name has to be a reference to the Seto Inland Sea since it’s written in Japanese as 瀬戸内海 and is even colloquially referred to as “Setouchi”. It also just so happens to be located…in Kansai! In fact, it feeds into Osaka Bay and is a major transportation hub around the Kansai region. Minamo is a common girl’s name, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen it written with kanji before. I mean I guess the Mi could be “beauty” which might fit the Pride theme? Or you could read it as a pun that means “and everyone else too” or something? The jisho is telling me that it can be an alternate way to read the word for “water surface” which could fit with the theme of being named after a sea.
Ichiyou Mamoru - Right now he’s leaning a bit too hard on the Gonta gap-moe thing, where he’s an intelligent sciencey type who’s also mega buff, but I like the idea of him being actually really anxious underneath his go-with-the-flow exterior. As long as he develops into a more round character, I will like him a lot. Also, he’s tied with Setouchi as hottest character. Not really sure how the Greed thing comes in yet though. Ugh, he should’ve been Lust, SpikeChun, get it together.
How Stupid Is That Name? Not very. Ichiyou means “one leaf” which evokes (in me at least) the idea of an Adonis statue with a single leaf over its groin. Ichiyou is a real surname, and Mamoru is very much a real given name. The most obvious meaning being 守る, “to protect” which in this case can mean his patients or maybe his dragon horde because Greed.
Mashiro Yuma - She is my favorite character right now, because hot damn, do I relate. This game is so fucking diverse for a Japanese game–a disabled girl and a chubby chick?! God, it’s like Togami and Celes had a daughter who was raised by Sagishi and I fucking love her. The Gluttony thing is pretty surface level right now, though I suspect that she’s going to be fairly relevant to the story given how important the Touwa Mashiro Group is in this world. She’s right behind Setouchi and Ichiyou for character I’d be most attracted to irl, cause I like thicc girls. Not a big fan of her fashion sense, but everything else is fucking great.I especially appreciate that she’s not really that spoiled or nasty, either? Like she’s snarky, yeah, but not the full Togami. Anyway I love Mashiro.
How Stupid Is That Name?Mashiro means “pure white” which could refer to a lot of things–being free from sin, being ironically NOT free from sin, etc. Pretty sure Mashiro is a real last name. Yuma is pretty uncommon, though. The kanji that you can use for it often include ones for “freedom” or “friend” or “kind” and so on for the “Yu” part, while the “ma” could be “center” (making her name end the way it begins), “hemp/cannabis”, or “jasmine”. It would be really funny if her given name was written as “freedom cannabis” since it would be like “free to be high”.
Terashima Shou - He’s a boke and I think his unnervingly Tezuka-like art style is kind of fun. I dunno, like I said, I don’t care what you kids think, I love manzai.
How Stupid Is That Name?I need to assume that they intend to write the surname as 照島 (illuminated island) considering the catchphrase and the locale, though I guess you could also interpret it as like “tereru” for “embarrassed”? Shou’s usually written as “soar”, but I suspect that this is just a pun based on the English word “show” (as in, TV show). Might also be a little nod to best friend Genocider.
Mirai - The straightman of the manzai team. I like her too–I think she does a great job of being expressive and her comedic timing is pretty good. She’s also fairly cute, so like Nate said, I wouldn’t mind merch of her.

Lost in a Dream
Tumblr media
Genre: Mystery, action, humour
Pairings: NCT Dream x Reader
AU!: Dystopian, Virtual Worlds
Warnings: swearing, harm/violence, mentions of disorders and mental health issues, identity crisis (if that counts as a warning) and probably agnst. You might suffer with dramatic irony sooner or later
A/n: This series is inspired by the Danganronpa Game Series, if you've played the game, you would understand the themes that are going on. Also, I picked Dream from their We Young era (ft. Jaemin from GO) - I liked their hair very much then.
Word Count: 1.7K
Summary: A game that means the life or death of everyone sounds extreme. But it’s real alright. When you’re placed in it, not knowing that your’re actually trapped in this virtual world or about the consequences of each action made because your memories are stolen from you… Makes the situation more confusing.

INTRO // Chapter 1
You were trapped in a world where talent ruled over society, the few people who had a talent, where called Ultimates. You were either born an Ultimate, or not. This is how the War began. The jealousy filed by the non-talented and the brutal nature of some Ultimates, ignited the most "Catastrophic War in Human History". And where did you fall into this? You had no Idea but you don't know your name and  you have no clue about your identity. But, you did know you were in one shitty situation.
You awoke in a cold room. The walls, floor and ceiling all being made of metal. Which you assumed was iron since the metal on the floor was rusty... but didn't look that old from what you could see, they had very defined engravements embroidered into the metal, but it being dark, you couldn't quite see what it was. The small boxed room had a thick, musty smell, like it was previously stained with something foul and distasteful. It was also dark, there were no windows in this tiny room, the only light source was a tiny candle that flickered like it was going to give out and the light that shone through the gaps of the exit of the room.
But here you were, laying down on the floor. The strong smell of metal mixed with something foul was intoxicating. Making your head swirl in pain. You knew you needed to get out of here. You was about to call out when you heard several footsteps run towards your door from outside, you stayed quiet and still. "Yo, anyone in there!?" Called out one voice.
"Seriously Jeno? You idiot, just open the door. Every door we've opened, the person laying in there was passed out." Said a different voice. You sat up slowly, listening to these voices bickering and shuffling about and around your door. You guessed they were young boys, teenagers at least from what you could tell from their voices. You decided to call out, you were getting desperate to exit the room. "Please hurry! It stinks in here!" You yelled. The scuffling of their feet stopped.
"... Did you hear that? I think there's a girl in there" One voice whispered, but frankly it was loud enough for you to hear.
"This is the first time you've fucking spoke and that's the first thing you say, Jisung?"
"Haechan! Watch your profanity." Said another voice, before the door in front of you clicked, then creaked open. You shielded your eyes from the intense brightness and squinted your eyes. Your room must had been really dark. You blinked a couple of times till your eyes adjusted before seeing the seven boys staring at you in confusion. One of the boys held a hand out, presumably for you to take it.
"I'm not too sure about what's happening right now. But I know that you're the last person we're looking for and we've got to escape, now."
You hesitantly grabbed his hand, lifting you up to your feet. You dusted off the rust from the floor, that clung to your clothing.
"Where's the exit to this place?" You questioned, looking at the boy who helped you up. His features were soft and small, but his brown eyes were dark brown and beaming. His hair was black, that had an undercut with slightly short and choppy bangs that rested above his brows.
"Haha, you see... we don't know that yet. But some strange things have been happening since we've been trying to find people here..." his voice trailed off, "It's like we've been abandoned here-"
"Purposely!" said another boy. He was much shorter than the rest, he had bright lilac hair that fell just above his eyes. My eye's furrowed and the other six boys looked at him in confusion.
"How the hell could you tell that?" Another boy with bright retorted, almost offended by the remark.
"I just need a little more evidence before I can explain it to you guys." The purple haired boy answered, smiling to himself. They all turned away from him confused, before looking at the boy who offered his hand to you.
"I guess we should introduce ourselves?" He asked. Looking around if anyone was going to start first. "Well, I guess my name is Mark. The Ultimate team leader, the oldest here." He then motioned for the boy in blue hair to speak. He's hesitant before looking at you, then speaking.
"I'm Jisung, the Ultimate martial artist." And that's all he said before nudging the small purple haired boy next to him.
"Jisung is the youngest here, and I'm the second. I'm Chenle, I'm the Ultimate forensic and I hope we can be friends!" He beamed. Like he had a naturally bright and happy aura, compared to Jisung, who was more timid.
"You're so naive, Chenle. We should hurry and get this over with before something had happens. The name's Haechan, don't forget it yo." He said with such might, like his ego was through the roof. His red hair really did fit with his fiery expressions.
"Don't worry, I won't." You said starkly. "You didn't say what your ultimate was, what is it?" You questioned. He scoffed at your question. Like he was taking his time to find something to say.
"Ultimate assassin. Don't get on my nerves, okay? I've slaughtered many individuals who've pissed me off." He said with such confidence, but his face looked uncertain and contradictory. But you decided to ignore that before the next boy with light brown hair began to speak with such a welcoming voice.
"Lol hi, I'm Jaemin. Probably the most amazing person you'll meet out of everyone here. I'm also the Ultimate Gamer by the way." He turned to look at the boy next to him. Who seemed like he was in his own world. "Earth to Renjun, your turn." He said mockingly, shaking him a little.
"Oh, what?" was his response.
"Introduce yourself to her, man." Jaemin said, pointing at you. Renjun looked for a second, before answering.
"I'm Huang Renjun, the Ultimate Nurse... nice to meet you." He said, before turning away and looking at his surroundings again.
"What an actual fucktard, he said his last name too." Muttered Haechan, not realising that Renjun caught on to what he said.
"I was only being polite, you should try it sometime. Maybe then I won't treat you like dust." Renjun snapped, his ears going slightly red too. You we're certain that they haven't known each other for that long, but it seems like they already hate each other.
"Being polite is bullshit, it's like you want me to kill you in your sleep." Haechan snapped back, walking closer to Renjun. Things looked like they were going to heat up. Mark put his arm out, stopping Haechan from getting any closer to Renjun.
"We haven't got time for your bickering. So please, don't make this situation worse" Mark said controllingly. Trying to get an upper hand over the situation.
"Well, I didn't fucking start it." Spat Haechan.
"That doesn't matter. Can't we get through a simple task without you getting angry at something stupid?" He shut him up, Haechan rolled his eyes, before taking a step back and crossing his arms in annoyance. There was only one more boy to introduce himself, who's face was a bit red, like he was holding something in. Your eyebrows furrowed before questioning him.
"You okay?" You directed your question at the boy who's name you didn't know.
"Oh yeah, I need to stop laughing at these tense situations. Honestly, it's gonna get me killed." He blurted out, now laughing.
"Yah, Jeno, you can't be laughing in a tense atmosphere like this!" Said Jaemin.
"Oh well, my name is Jeno, and I'm the Ultimate inventor. Hope I don't need to say more." The white haired boy finished. Their attention was all on you, like they were waiting for you to speak.
"What's your name?" Chenle asked. You hesitated, remembering that you don't remember your name or talent.
"... I don't know." You replied.
"Do you remember your talent?" He asked once more.
"No... I don't. I don't remember anything." You responded. They all looked at you dumbfounded and shocked.
"You couldn't had forgotten... you're lying. I bet you just have a shitty talent... Like ultimate nurse or something dumb like that." Haechan laughed sheepishly. You couldn't believe it either, everyone else remembered their name and talent, but yet you didn't.
"It's okay if you don't remember. It may come back to you in a couple of hours or days." Mark reassured you, placing his hand on your shoulder. "But right now, we have bigger things to worry about. Like getting out of here. But we need to settle something first." He said the last part with a stern voice.
"Hmm?" You hinted him to continue.
"We need to call you something, we cant just call you 'She/Her/It' that's just rude." He stated.
"I think she looks like a y/n." Said Jaemin. Just at that moment they all narrowed their eyes, staring deeply at you. Kind of making you uncomfortable
"For once, Jaemin is correct." Mocked Jeno. "Y/n really fits."
"How about we call you Y/n?" Mark asked, looking at you.
"I'm fine with that." You replied. Mark then discussed that they need to find some type of exit, and you were split into three groups. Group 1 being: you, Chenle and Mark. Group 2 being: Jisung, Jeno and Renjun, leaving group 3 being Jaemin and Haechan. You all settled on searching different parts of the huge 'building' you were all trapped in. And you all settled off, your group was searching the area by the grand doors, that could possibly be the entrance.
"Guys, there's something I really want to check." Chenle blurted out, as if he was very eager. "There's something I'd like to clear up about this place." He then stated. "I want to visit the science lab." Mark nodded at his request, before leading the way to the science lab. You had so many questions on your mind. Some only you could answer. But you decided to push that to the back of your mind, focusing on the current situation. What Chenle wants to find out.

A/N: Heheh, this is my first time writing on Tumblr, so I'm trying to understand the mechanics about making links and stuff. Currently there is no link to Chapter 1... as I haven't written it lol. I'm doing this from the top of my head, with a little bit of planning. I really hope this is enjoyed, and I continue to write. Thank you!

Which characters in v3 you would say had a good writing considering their roles and characters as a whole?
It’s kinda hard for me to just say who is good on the fly, so I’ll go over everyone instead.
Akamatsu as a narrator murderer was perfect. She managed to pull it off while still remaining perfectly heroic and sympathetic and her moments there get even more emotionally intense on a replay, specially her harsh self loathing. Unfortunately her Free Times suck but that’s not the part that matters.
Amami is portrayed as a mystery and that mystery gets an unimpressive answer. The story in his Free Times are a lot better but his ruthless manipulation there, while makes a lot of sense for the character, doesn’t fit well with his friendly personality.
Iruma is unfunny comic relief, the interesting questions I had about her character go answered, her unique personality is not explored (we don’t learn the causes nor she changes it in form) and murder motive is just half a line without much context. She’s more of a plot device than a proper character, to be honest.
Ouma is an entertaining antagonist with lots of layered dialogue, an amazing hero/villain dynamic with Momota, really clever strategies and is the personification of the game’s themes. I absolutely love  how he is portrayed as hypercompetent but still constantly fails to get his perfect result no matter how hard he tries. He’s a little lacking in backstory but that’s still enough to earn the spot as my favorite DR character and second overall.
Ki-bo’s writing is more focused on comic relief than on him seriously discussing his humanity, which sucks because his human themes are really and his humor is really bad. The jokes about him being unimpressive are unimpressive,  the “haha he can’t read between the lines because he is a robot” jokes are just autism jokes by other name and the discrimination jokes are just as lame as the rest. His final role was as pseudo-Naegi, which was annoying for it’s repetitiveness of previous games, but the game later shows itself to be very much against repetitive sequels, so Ki-bo’s moment was very effective on what it was trying to be.
Gonta was charming and respectable character who unfortunately wasn’t treated well. I’m not even talking about how he was idiotified by the translation, I’m talking about his motive. For starters, we get Tsumiki’s bad “you won’t know the motive until a future chapter” thing, which kinda kills the moment in the first playthrough. But regardless of that, his motive still sucks. Gonta is very much portrayed as a sympathetic innocent cinammon roll trying to help everyone with a mercy kill, when you can’t really call it sympathetic or mercy kill if his victims are all unaware of Gonta is doing it. This situation could only be actually considered a mercy kill if Gonta informed everyone of the situation, asked each one of them if they would rather live or die and them not kill the ones that chose to live. In a game where Akamatsu’s “Only people who know the truth can choose their own path” is one of the central quotes, it’s kinda bad that no one calls Gonta out for that decision. I understand not wanting to do it in front of him at his final moments, but Saihara or Ouma could have said something about it after his death.
Saihara is kinda basic, but he is very much the kind of protagonist I like: a character who is clearly not a self-insert and who is constantly discussing the central themes of his own story. Him being first seen as a regular character before he becomes the protagonist is a neat way of establishing as his own person separate from the player. He also gets some really intense moments in chapter 6, made magnificent by Hayashibara’s powerful voice acting.
Shirogane is another one of my favorites. For the first 5 chapters she is just a passive but entertaining tsukkomi who just says the convenient thing needed to keep the plot moving forward or some anime joke to keep the classic tone of DanganRonpa’s humor. There’s also some clever foreshadowing here and there but almost nothing noticeable in the first playthrough of course. Come chapter 6, we get a threatening, cunning and adaptative mastermind who manages to even outperform Junko in the entertainment factor with her cosplay tricks, a fascination vision of how a “plain” standard person in the outside world’s society is like and most importantly, an always appreciated case of well-written imitation. Shirogane is a human character with human limitations trying be Junko, who is kinda beyond that. I guess my love for imitation plots fall on the same idea I mentioned for Ouma: a hypercompetent character being constantly and unable to produce ideal results.
Shinguuji has a lot of fascinating elements to his character, but… let’s just say Kodaka missed his mark and leave it at that.
Chabashira has a few problems of her character flaws being ignored by the narrative and given silly comedic causes to serious issues, but she overall a fantastic character despite not having a narrative role outside of being a love interest for Yumeno. Her relationship is well developed, her final speech is my favorite in the game and the way her moral code and actions feel unique to her while still strongly true to the principles valued by Muromachi-based martial arts (and by extension Zen Buddhism) is commendably well-handled.
Toujou is kinda bad. Instead of humanizing her character, she just established she has no personal will of her own, we never get to know why and that only becomes a plot point with the reveal she was serving someone else instead of the characters, still 0% of Toujou’s individual non-duty-related feelings. The utilitarism motive didn’t impress and felt honestly kinda dumb, but that might be because read too many utilitarism stories already. Just to clarify, I’m not calling it dumb because of the high school prime minister thing, that kind of silliness is par for the course for the series already. My problem with it is that regardless of what the crisis is, Toujou believing the population is helpless without her is lack of faith in her citizens and believe her presence alone will be game-changing for the situation is either not thinking things through or unbelievably arrogant. Anyways, her neverending determination and the running scene resulting from it were great and it felt good to see her finally emoting, but that’s all derived from her sense of duty, so it doesn’t stop her from being one-dimensional.
Harukawa is a character with strong emotions, interesting characterization moments and character arcs, but is lacking the culmination of her arc is poorly timed and she has is lacking on the consistency department.
Hoshi has easily the strongest Free Time in the game, but centering your character around the search of a reason to want to live and having his final answer be “you have no reason to” and have him surrender his life immediately after is unarguably bad.
Momota I already talked about him just this week, so you can take the answer for him in no time.
Yumeno had a very compelling character arc, a decent set of Free Times (although not very related to her main story characterization) and functioned very well as comic relief after she became more expressive. Nothing to complain about her. I also really love how her stopping lazy was not an instantaneous process and you can see stumbling with it sometimes and getting tired from simple things.
Angie gets some characterization in her Free Times but nothing that makes her interesting or sympathetic, the main story places her as a brainwashing strawman and she overall manages to get more disgusting moments than the non-comedic serial killer.

alright. ok. i’ve calmed down enough to talk about drv3 now. definitely a lot of spoilers under the cut so don’t even think about looking if you care about spoilers
overall impression: holy fuck.
just. holy fuck.
alright, for real, the game starts off really fuckin’ good with a super strong ch1. the “the killer was you all along” reveal as well as protag switch was done SUPER well, the hints sprinkled throughout the chapter that kaede had something going on immediately fit together like pieces of a puzzle. i also really liked that the layout on the student handbook immediately changed with the protag switch, something i only noticed because i’m a spastic saver. it was really good and i understand now why kodaka’s been so proud of it for so long, stating it’s his favorite case that he’s written so far. it was really well done and i was delighted.
then, chapters 2 and 3 were kind of... less satisfying. i don’t know if i’m just slow and didn’t really understand the reasoning behind everything, but the culprit reveals kinda fell short and their motivations were... less interesting than any other culprit’s. i did think it was funny how obviously there was gonna be a locked-room mystery in ch3, what with the sudden access to a room that could only be locked from the inside, but it was kind of easy to figure out. i will say that the only execution that had me in tears was kirumi’s, for the simple reason that she TRIED SO HARD and her struggles were rendered completely meaningless when it turned out the outside world she struggled so hard to reach wasn’t accessible. it seriously pained me to watch someone who tried so hard not be able to reach their goal, for some reason. it really affected me.
ch4 really picked it up again, though. i really felt for gonta who had to accept that he’d committed a crime that he had no memory of. i think it might even be my favorite case of the entire game. it’s also the case that really solidified kokichi’s place as my favorite character in the game. it’s ALSO the case where i feel like the lying gimmick was done the best, since in every trial there is at least one point where you’re required to lie, and the previous lies had kind of fallen short imo. ch1 did it alright enough - i don’t really remember the lie you were required to tell anymore, tbh - but in ch2 and 3 it kinda felt like the game was trying to make you feel bad for telling a lie you were required to tell. i didn’t take any of the opportunities to lie willingly, mostly because my brain isn’t wired to figure out where lying would work or not and figuring out the truth is just the easiest way to solve things for me, so i don’t know if the game treats you the same in those cases or not, but when the game’s just pointing at you like “haha you lied! and everyone believed you!! don’t you feel bad??” it just doesn’t hit home imo. but in ch4, where you’re lying about kokichi’s lie to his face, it just feels so SATISFYING. like, this is the character whose lies have been twisting everything around all the time, and using his own lie against him that way just feels good. like, kokichi, i love you, but come on.
ch5 was interesting in its own way, too. your own theories on what happened kept getting thrown around throughout the trial in a way that made you doubt the truth up until you actually saw it for yourself - that kaito survived and that kokichi was the victim - and the conclusion was satisfying in its own way like that. i also really liked kaito’s execution, what with him dying before it’s actually finished. it was a sort of bittersweet moment; on one hand, it’s sad that he died, but on the other, it was a great victory that he died before the execution was finished, thus beating monokuma at his own game... kind of?
ch6...
ch6.
i just beat it and i honestly still don’t know what to think.
on one hand, the entire last trial was RAVING. INSANE. i’m only feeling so drained right now because it was so crazy. i’m really glad my flatmate left so she wouldn’t have to be exposed to my bouts of crazed laughter over just how absurd everything is.
on the other, what the fuck? what? how? who gave you the right
for serious, that ending was so weird and unexpected. i mean, it’s brilliant? but i’m also still extremely lost in all the lies and truths and what’s real and what’s not.
like, i’m just. i don’t know. it’s so crazy i can barely put it into words.
for starters, i’d kind of jokingly thought to myself stuff like “what if tsumugi’s the mastermind, wouldn’t that be crazy”, but i never.... actually..... expected it. to happen. it was just so totally and completely out of nowhere, but still made perfect sense. so revealing her as, actually, the mastermind just kinda... broke me? and i just sat there laughing at the ceiling for probably a solid minute.
second, acknowledging danganronpa as fiction just.... wow. i never, ever, in my wildest dreams, would have expected that. like i can’t BELIEVE kodaka did that. it’s GENIUS but i never would’ve expected it.
third, JUNKO. KODAKA. SERIOUSLY. YOU JUST FUCKING HAD TO. people have been joking about this sort of shit for YEARS and you just UP AND FUCKING DO IT.
but, okay. the insane points isn’t what really gets to me. it’s the LIES. the knowledge that EVERYTHING’S BEEN A LIE. or, has it? how much is lies and how much is the truth? i already figured in ch5 that the flashback lights may not contain the truth. at least when everyone started thinking that kokichi was a remnant of despair. i didn’t believe it for a second, mostly because my understanding of the nature of the remnants of despair has been that they’re a leaderless group, only kept together by the common desire to spread despair and carry out junko’s will.
so, the personalities and memories of all the characters were all lies. right? everything they were was part of their new, written, fictional personalities that they received through the fake memories from the flashback lights, right? the world of danganronpa is fictional, right?
i think i lost my train of thought. i swear i was going somewhere with this, but the lies are still twisting around in my brain.
actually, maybe i can figure out something from this. tsumugi’s comment on being a “cosplaycat criminal” just really bothers me. my overall impression’s been so far that people in dr are the most genuine when death is almost upon them, which leads me to believe that maybe, maybe there is something behind that comment. since it’s one of her last lines before getting executed by keebo. it’s been a pattern i’ve noticed in many other characters’ deaths, what with junko dropping her cheerful facade seconds before getting crushed to death in dr1 and nagito dying with a fearful expression (which i still continue to interpret as him regretting choosing death for whatever reason, reasons i have multiple theories on but no confirmed answer).
anyway, my personal theory is that tsumugi may be a copycat criminal basing her crime entirely on a fictional setting. inspired by danganronpa, she chose to infiltrate the next season and set up an actual, real killing game within the fictional setting, involving all the previously willing participants. the watchers, made out in-game to be cruel and indulging in despair, may be completely unaware of the fact that the people dying are dying for real.
ok this has gone on long enough. the twist ending was just so twisty, i’m still trying to untangle it in my brain and figure out what’s truth and what’s lies. it’s absolutely brilliant but also so crazy and insane that i can’t really wrap my head around it. hopefully some days’ recovery (and free time events and dating minigames) will put my overheated brain at peace.
long story short, it’s a really good game, but also infinite times more crazy than the previous titles. kodaka’s really gone all out in the “what can i get away with doing” department and it really shows. i can’t help but wonder if kodaka meant for the finale to call out the audience for being cruel and reveling in despair but hey, he’s not wrong so, y’know. also i’ve heard he really got to do stuff he’s dreamed of doing in danganronpa games before, which i suspect is referring specifically to the themes of “you were the killer all along,” the locked room murder (i don’t really think nagito’s murder-suicide in sdr2 counts as it’s pretty clear throughout investigation that his wounds are self-inflicted), a culprit who’s unaware of their own crime and the unknowable victim/culprit. at least those are all themes that i figure must’ve been a lot of fun to come up with and write.
it’s just. it’s crazy and insane but it’s so satisfying. i have started considering the sdr2 ending to be a bit anticlimactic, what with the whole “everybody lives” message (which feels cruel when you consider that the deaths in the first killing game, where the participants just happened to be involved, really died, while the participants in the second killing game, who were all followers of junko, were allowed to live), but this ending is just... mad. three survivors out of 16 and an open conclusion, similar to the conclusion of dr1, where you don’t really get to see what the outside world is like at all.
okay i seriously need to stop rambling i don’t even know what i’m talking about anymore. i very much enjoyed my time with this game, is the bottom line. i’m gonna make a screenshot compilation of some of my favorite screenshots now, probably
