Happy Halloween Eve! I am posting 2 stories about Halloween (today and tomorrow), today's is a Halstead Sister one and tomorrows is a Halstead brothers one. Both stories actually happened to me growing up, so enjoy!
What are you supposed to be?
“Mama mama, can Jay and Will take me trick or treating this year?” y/n asked. Y/N was 7yrs old and wanted to be a big kid just like her 10 and 13 year old brothers.
“As long as you stick close to Will and stay in the neighborhood” replied your mom.
“Yes!” you shouted while running to put the finishing touches on your costume.
An hour later, Jay walked into your room dressed in his army guy costume,
“Are you ready to go?” he asked.
“Yup” you stated while shoving the rest of your hair into your hat.
Turning around Jay shook his head, “weren’t you that last year?”
“Yea and what’s it to ya?” you sasses back.
“Nothing, sorry I said anything, let’s go. Will said the house at the end of the street has king sized bars”
To any child, especially under the age of 10, that was the music to your ears and thus you grabbed your brother’s hand and pulled him towards the door, where your other brother was.
“A wizard? Again?” asked Will when he took in your costume.
“What’s wrong with recycling a costume?” you asked.
“It’s just -” started Will but he cut himself off when he noticed your mom walking in the room with a camera.
“Just what?” you dared to ask.
Will stayed silent and wrapped his arms around you and Jay in a way to distract.
“Just what, Will? You pestered while turning to look at your eldest brother.
“Leave it Y/N” hissed Will while turning your head to face your mom.
“Cheese” the three of you smiled. Once your mom was done with taking the pictures, you bugged Will again, “Will, come on spit it out. Why does me wearing a costume over again matter?”
“Leave it Y/N” hissed Will again.
Jay, who had enough of this whining blurted out, “because it makes us look even more poor than we are Y/N, happy?”
“Jay!” shouted Will
Jayson Alexander” shouted your mother from the other room.
“Oh” was all you could mutter shyly.
******
“Let’s hit up the house at the end of the block, Connor was saying they have king sized candy bars” exclaimed Will while you guys walked away from Ms. Carmicals house.
“Yea!” you and Jay exclaimed while slinging your pillow cases over your shoulders.
As you approached the house, you noticed little kids dressed as various different animated characters walking away from the house. All with big candy bars in hand. You skipped ahead in anticipation for your chance at the big candy.
“Well, what do we have here, a buzz lightyear, an angel, and a mario” stated old man O’Riley while dropping candy in each of the trick or treaters bags. “You all look so good” he stated while they walked away.
Next in line was you, Jay, and Will.
“Well, Well, Well, what do we have here? An Army man, a doctor, and ah-” faltered old man O’Riley.
“What are you supposed to be, little man?” he asked.
“I’m a girl” you stated confidently.
“Oh, my, well what are you supposed to be?” Old man O’Riley asked again while your brothers stifled laughs.
“I’m a wizard!” you exclaimed while holding out your pillowcase in hopes of getting your candy. And sure enough, old man O’Riley placed a king sized bar in your bag.
“Thank you” the three of you exclaimed while walking away.
****
“I remember that! You were mortified” laughed Jay while taking a bite of his pumpkin pie.  You and your brothers were sat around the kitchen table reminiscing on Halloween growing up.
“And I remember you and Will just laughed and made fun of me” you bit back.
“We can’t help that you were such a tomboy growing up that you even chose costumes that were geared towards boys” stated Will.
“Costumes shouldn’t be defined as girl or boy centered, I always liked the idea that you can dress up however you like” you confidently replied.
“And that’s what we will always love about you” started Will
“You dance to the beat of your drum,” added Jay.
Smiling, you ate some pie and asked, “So, do you guys have any crazy stories from Halloween growing up? Maybe one I haven’t heard before?”
“Did we ever tell you the time Jay walked right into someone’s house while trick or treating?” asked Will while looking at Jay.
“No? Do share” you choked out after swallowing your pumpkin pie bite.

Finally, an imagine. I am working through all the requests, slowly but surely, as well as a few other ideas of my own.
This was a request by @alannnina for a halstead!sister who is in an abuse warning.
This is a heavy one and there’s a few big TWs. So tw for graphic scenes of psychical and verbal abuse. Mentions/hints of rape and sexual assault to minors, as well as a description of what rape is. Lots of misogyny towards women and misogynistic language is used.
I do have ideas for a part two if people enjoy this. It’s also not fully edited so any mistake please point them out! And without further ado, enjoy!!
"You're late."
You jumped at the sudden intrusion of the silence, knowing it was just Jay, and so let the door slam shut, not bothering to close it quietly anymore.
"I know," You were uncomfortable, you always were when Jay took the authority role, way more so than with Will, "Sorry."
Jay would use his police voice on you, some sort of an attempt to psych you out, or to scare you. You didn't know which was more important to him but you did know it wouldn't necessarily stop you from doing whatever you'd done again. Not know that you knew why he'd use that voice. And, it was Jay, you brother, who you were never scared of because you knew him. You trusted him.
"Jesus, Y/N, where were you? I was worried," Jay dropped the bad-cop act and instead let his voice show emotion, "I tell you a time and you've gotta be back by then."
"I know," You shrugged, "Time just got away from me, I guess."
"Time just got away from you? You're sixteen. That's not an excuse."
"Sorry." You shrugged again, what else were you meant to do?
It was just something that happened to every teenager, a bit of healthy rebellion or just having fun. God knows that Jay must've done that, even if you weren't privy to that stuff.
Jay searched your face, just standing there slightly illuminated by the moonlight coming through the window. Jay hadn't shut the blinds in the living room, he never did.
It was a few more beats until Jay spoke again, "Go to bed. We can talk about it more in the morning. And I mean go to bed, no sitting on your phone or whatever you think I don't know that you do."
You couldn't help but smirk a bit at that one, because you did know that Jay knew, you were way too confident in his detective abilities to assume anything else. But he never told you off.
“You want me to turn the light on?" Jay asked, his hand reaching up the light switch.
“No!" You said, a bit too quickly and a bit too loudly and Jay furrowed his eyebrows at you, "No. It's fine. I'm used to the dark."
Jay knew something was up, of course he would now, how could he not? He wasn't going to let it go, and it was going to become harder and Jack was going to become meaner and it was all more things that you'd have to deal with when you were already dealing with enough-
Suddenly the light was blinding your eyes, and causing a headache to begin to pulse in your head.
"Jay, no. I said no!" You tried to turn away from Jay before he could see your face, even if it was pointless because he'd see it anyway, he wouldn't let it go now.
"Y/N," Jay's voice suddenly sounded very, very old, "What happened?"
"You're not angry?" Was the first thing you could think to say. You'd spent so long being angry at recently.
“It was Jack." Jay said, not a shake in his voice.
“No," You shook her head, suddenly feeling a very deep need to explain it all before it could get out of hand, "I mean, yes, it was but Jay you don't understand. It's not what it seems like."
“What does it seem like?"
“Abuse." It was the first time you had said that word out loud.
“If it's not then why did you say that?"
You felt hopeless, you felt that returning feeling rising up from your stomach, numbing your body, "It's what it looks like, I guess. But that's not the case, I swear."
“Will needs to look at your face," It wasn't phrased like a question, but Jay was still watching you, and you knew he was waiting for permission.
“Okay but can we- can you not tell him anything. I don't want him to get the wrong idea or anything."
Jay just looked at you.
—————————
"So, I've heard you're having a bit of a tough time recently. You want to talk about it?"
You were sat opposite Dr Charles, it'd been a week since you'd come home to Jay waiting in the dark for her. You hadn't been able to see Jack during that week and so you'd refused to go to school. You'd see him there, is what you said. Really, you just didn't want to go. You hated it and you'd hate it even more with a massive bruise on you face.
Jay had relented almost immediately, and you had your way. You had your phone and you could just leave the apartment during the day. Jack would skip, and then you could explain this all to him and he would understand and it'd all be fine. Some big misunderstanding.
That hadn't happened. Instead, Jay took your phone and when you got it back you couldn't find Jack's contact, nor could you add anyone new to message. Not just on your texts, on anything. And to be honest, you were shocked. You didn't think Jay knew about any of these apps, or at least not enough that he'd know to do all this.
But it was whatever, it was fine. You could still go and meet Jack during the day.
Except Jay had other plans for that. So you went and sat in the break room at the precinct and did work online. You couldn't even leave the room because of all the stuff the team were doing outside. However, true to his word, Jay hadn't told anyone about it. The team were confused, sure, but no one looked at you any differently. Even if they were trying to hide it.
Will, however, had known almost immediately. You had told him he had it wrong, and he didn't argue. Just fixed your face and told you to get some rest. No doubt so he could sit and talk to Jay about you.
"Y/N?" Dr Charles said again, "You with me?"
“Sorry," You said, you didn't want or need to be here but you liked Dr Charles and so you would play along, "Just got a lot on my mind."
“I bet," Dr Charles smiled lightly, "So, Will didn't tell me too much. You want to fill me in?"
“Sure," You sat forward slightly, putting your hands under your thighs, "It's not a big deal or anything, though. Just so you know."
“That's fine," Dr Charles smiled again, "Just take you time."
“Uuuh," You shrugged slightly, "They think my boyfriend, Jack, is abusing me."
“But he's not?"
“No," You shook your head, "It's not abuse. I'd know."
"And, if you don't mind me asking, how would you be able to tell if it was abuse?"
“I'd be scared. Of Jack."
“You aren't scared?"
You shook your head, "I'm not scared of Jack. I'm scared of the way he acts when his brother is around."
“Is that not the same thing?" Dr Charles asked.
“No." You said, because it wasn't and you knew that even if Dr Charles didn't.
“Alright," Dr Charles smiled, "I want to talk about Jack and his brother some more, is that okay?"
“Do I have a choice?" You asked.
“Yes. Of course," Dr Charles said, "If you don't want to we can have a game of chess, how about that? I already talked with your brothers and I'll see you every week but it will all be at your pace, Y/N."
“Okay," You knew Jay or Will would probably be pissed but Dr Charles was the psychiatrist, not them, "Let's have that game of chess."
————————
The team had been gone for a while and you were bored. You'd been left with school work to complete, Geography, and you had finished hours ago.
Normally, you'd wander downstairs, maybe say hi to Trudy. But today something felt wrong, deep in your stomach you could just feel that something bad had happened.
Your fears were confirmed when everyone arrived back and Jay had that look on your face and he was trying not to look at you but he still was. And so he was talking about you.
He came towards the door of the break room and you almost wanted to ignore him, pretend you were annoyed with him so he'd go away and wouldn't tell you whatever bad news he had.
“Y/N, I need to talk to you." Jay shut the door behind him, so it was just the two of them.
“What?" You asked, ready to try and delay things, "Now? I'm, like, busy."
“You need to sit down," Jay pulled another chair out, opposite yours and so you listened to him and sat.
“It's about Jack. Y/N, I need you to listen to me."
You nodded, sick of hearing about Jack but the tone of Jay's voice almost made you feel sick.
“He has a younger sister, right? Sarah."
You nodded, "Yeah. She's 11 I think. I went to her last birthday."
Jay nodded but you knew he wasn't fully listening, "Jack, he hurt Sarah. She's in the hospital."
“Hurt? What do you mean he... hurt her? Like he hit her or?"
“He did something much worse, Y/N. I can't tell you the details but he hurt her."
“It was because of those videos, right?" You couldn't stop the words from spilling out because if you had just told someone then maybe Sarah wouldn't be hurt.
You had known the videos were bad news but you'd just say and watched them and nodded and agreed to what Jack said to appease him.
Maybe he hasn't abused you. But he'd hurt Sarah and he had hurt you. Even if that wasn't him. It wasn't the Jack before his brother showed him videos. It wasn't the Jack that you knew Jack was.
But it had been Jack who had hit and punched and strangled and apparently really hurt his sister.
“Videos?" Jay frowned, leaning in closer to you, "What videos."
“Um. He used to show me these videos that his brother shared to him," You said slowly, not looking at Jay, "They were of these men and they were saying stuff about how your girlfriends should behave. How women should behave. I just, I thought that, that..." You trailed off because you didn't know what you thought. You didn't fucking know.
Jay paused for a second before talking, obviously realising this was progressing to something that may need to be recorded, “Y/N, Kim is going to join us." Jay said and you nodded. That was fine. Kim was fine.
Jay gestured through the window on the door and Kim came in, smiling at you and pulling a chair up. Jay spoke to her in a low voice and she nodded
“Y/N, can you tell me what the men in these videos said?" Kim asked, "You can stop if you feel uncomfortable."
You bit the inside of your lip, "I guess. For Sarah."
“Y/N, you don't have to do anything you don't want to. But it would help."
You nodded, "I know, so I'll tell you."
You didn't know where to begin because the videos were all so long and the men in them all had their own ideas and opinions but you just said what you remembered. Starting slowly and it all came tumbling out afterwards.
“They said your girlfriend should do what you want. If she didn't, you should punish her. Like, hit her or slap her. If she misbehaved too often then you should get her to count the bruises. Tell you what they were for. If you want to kiss, she should kiss. If you want to.. have sex, then she owes it to you. You shouldn't let her speak out of turn, or be rude to you. You shouldn't let her mock you in public and she should just let you show her off."
Jay had written most of it down, but you could see where his handwriting had gone weird, or messy. Presumably because of the things you were saying.
“That's really helpful, Y/N. If it's okay could you tell us about an instance of where Jack hurt you?" Kim asked, smiling at you.
You shrugged, "I guess."
Kim nodded for you to go ahead and so you did, but not before taking a deep breath.
“We went to a party. One of those massive house parties you see in the films. I was 15 so it was like, 6 months ago I guess..."
“I didn't know these actually existed!" Y/N clung on to Jack's hand, looking around the room.
There were people everywhere, they were even holding those little red cups that the teens do in the movies. Fuck yeah. You were one of those teens now.
You and Jack both grabbed your own red cups, filled with some nondescript alcohol that burned your throat when you drank it.
After saying hello to your friends, Jack led you over to a group of boys on the sofa. You recognised a few of them, being Jack's older brother and his friends.
They whistled lowly when they saw you, one going as far to wolf whistle. It made you feel uncomfortable and you went to look at Jack to let him now but he wasn't looking at you. Instead he was beaming over to the group of boys. Looking like he was showing off a trophy.
And so you didn't say anything, letting Jack pull you down on to his lap. You tried to move off, to have your own space but he held on to you tightly and tilted your face over to his.
“Gimme a kiss, baby." He said, tapping his cheek.
You did as he asked but it was weird. He'd never called you baby and he'd never asked you to do that and he had never acted like this with you in front of his brother.
After giving him a kiss he pulled you back down, kissing you. His hands made their way to your dress straps, pulling them down and there was whoops on the background and what the fuck was Jack doing?
You pushed him off of you, "Jack," You hissed, "What are you doing?"
“He, like, shoved me off his lap then and his brother said something to him. But I was trying to pull my dress back down and fix it so I didn't really hear. But then Jack dragged me away and I let him because I wanted to get away from all those boys. They scared me."
“I just didn't want to sit on your lap and make out in front of all those people, Jack. They're older than us, it just freaked me out!" You stepped away from him when he shut the door to the room he had dragged you in.
“So my brother and his friends freak you out?" Jack's eyes were little slits and you would be lying if you said you weren't a little bit scared. But you were mostly annoyed, very annoyed.
“That isn't what I said and you know it." You shook your head, "I'm going to go find Katie or someone, I'll see you later. There's no point us hiding down here fighting."
Jack grabbed onto you wrist and you turned around, your eyes already rolling, "Jack, c'mon."
Suddenly your back was smacking against the wall and you couldn't even cry out because you were so fucking shocked. You didn't know what had happened.
“Jack?" You was staring, wide eyed and his name was the only thing you could get out because what the fuck? And your hands were shaking and your voice was, too. And you felt a bit sick.
Jack pressed his forearm against your throat, cutting off your air supply slightly, "When I want to make out, we make out."
“Jack?" You said again, it was all you could say and you instantly wished you hadn't when Jack pressed his arm harder and okay, now you couldn't actually breathe. At all.
“I could knock you out, right here. I'm in charge, bitch."
You didn't know what to do and your entire body was pulsing with fear because you were so fucking scared. You'd never been so fucking scared before in your life and all you could think was that you were scared.
“Do you understand. Y/N!" Jack barked your name at the end and you opened your mouth to speak but you couldn't because he was pressing against your throat too hard.
Jack laughed then, and let his arm come away from your throat a bit, "Stupid bitch."
“Yes," You gasped out, "Yes, Jack."
Jack smiled then and stepped away, "Good girl, Y/N. I'm sorry I had to do that but you embarrassed me, y'know. My brother and his friends, they'll laugh at me if you don't listen to me. They barely believe I have a girlfriend, it hurts."
You held your throat, trying to ignore the pain in it and the ache in your chest from the lack of air and listened to what Jack was saying to take your mind off it.
“Please don't tell anyone. I was just scared. I act out when I'm scared and I'm sorry....."
"... I won't do it again. I promise. I'm sorry." Y/N recited the words Jack had told her that night, still avoiding looking at Kim or Jay.
“I knew then I wasn't going to tell anyone."
“Why, Y/N?" Jay said from beside you.
You stiffened slightly, "Because he was right, his brother was a dick to him. And it was easier. I loved him. I really did, and I didn't want to lose him."
“How often do you think these events took place?" Kim asked, still not looking at you any differently.
“It wasn't like... regular or anything, it was just here and there."
“Could you tell us a few more of the instances? What he did and what happened before and after?" Kim asked gently.
“Yeah, I guess," You didn't know where to start, what would be most helpful to Sarah's case, "Uh, the night I got back late. We... I just told him I had to go, because it was late. But I'd told him I'd ask Jay if I could stay round, even though I knew he was going to say no. Jack got mad that I couldn't, I guess. I said I had to go and started to leave but Jack followed me downstairs and we argued for a bit. Then his brother, Aidan, was stood in the kitchen right next to us. He was laughing, or smirking, I think. And then Jack got angry. I mean, so angry."
“Why do you love to make me into an idiot, huh? What the fuck is wrong with you?" Jack was in your face and you wanted to get away from him but there was no room.
“Jack, I don't- I don't do that. I just, Jay he'll be angry I can't stay." You spoke as quick as you could, needing to get the words out.
“Wow. I wouldn't let my girl speak to me like that, Jack. Mine would be apologising." Aidan called from the back of the room.
You closed your eyes, wanting to get out of this situation.
“He's right. You love to make me look like a fool, why are you denying it?"
“I'm not-"
The slap came so quickly you ended up hitting the wall behind you harshly, biting your lip to stop yourself from crying out.
“You are, you bitch." Jack hissed, spit hitting your face.
“I'm sorry," You forced out, "I'm sorry I don't think you're stupid. I love you, Jack. I'm sorry. You're right, I do."
“I am right," Jack nodded, "You should be grovelling."
Aidan started towards the two of you, talking as he came, "She admitted it. So she needs to be punished, little brother."
“I'm sorry." You said again.
“How many bruises does she have this week?" You heard Aidan say to Jack.
“I don't know," Jack turned to you, "How many bruises do you have, bitch?"
The number was burned into your memory, it always was, "Seven. I have seven. I'm sorry. I swear, I'm so sorry."
Neither boy listened to your apologies, "It's eight now, I guess." Aidan shrugged and then clapped his little brother on the should, "You're the boss." He said before smirking at you and walking away.
You shrunk away from Jack, "I'm sorry, I won't do it again."
He rubbed a hand over his face, "I don't want to do this, Y/N! But I have to. You have to be better, okay? You understand that?"
You nodded, "I understand." You sniffed, preparing for the hits to come.
Jay looked like he was ready to leave, whether to cry or to kill Jack, you didn't know. But he was on the edge of his seat, his eyes small and his leg moving. He never jogged his leg unless he was seriously upset.
Kim was hiding her true feelings, you had no doubt, "That's really helpful. And I'm sorry that happened."
You shrugged, not replying.
“I need to ask you a quick question, okay Y/N," Kim said, and you nodded, half knowing what Kim was doing to say anyway, "Did he ever force you to have sexual intercourse against your will?"
“No," You shook you head, "We did, uh have sex but it wasn't rape. He didn't, like hit me to make me." Y/N almost blanched at the word rape and the fact that Jay was sat right next to you as you were saying all this.
Kim leant forward, ever so slightly, "Did he ever pressure you into having sex, and I don't mean did he hit you. I mean did he tell you you owed it to him, because you were his girlfriend? Or did he just keep saying he wanted you to make him feel good? Maybe you refused at first but eventually agreed because Jack seemed like he really wanted you to?"
You clenched your jaw, "That's not rape, okay? It wasn't rape it was just a girlfriend helping out her boyfriend. And I don't want to," You turned to Jay, "Can we stop? I'm finished I don't want to do this anymore?"
Kim stood up before Jay replied, "I'll leave you two here. You did great, Y/N. It will really help Sarah."
Kim left and you and Jay sat in silence for a few seconds, and you knew he was going to say something but you had to first.
“I don't want to talk about it right now, Jay, okay? You can send me back to Dr Charles and I'll took to him tomorrow but right now I just- I just want to ask you something and then I want to go home. I don't want to think about this anymore today." The tears were coming to your face and you wiped them away angrily, "Why did Jack do it? To Sarah? To... me?"
“We can't know for sure yet, Y/N but those videos you described? It sounds like they radicalised him." Jay answered, focusing on your question and for that you were grateful.
“He's just a kid. How can a kid do all this?"
Jay took your hand suddenly, squeezing it tight, “What he did wasn't okay, Y/N and we will get to the bottom of it. But you don't need to worry about him anymore."
“But there's going to be a trial, right? For Sarah. Maybe for me. This is going to be hanging over my head for years until it's done. And I just want for Jack to be gone. I don't want this to have happened to me, Jay."
Jay pulled you into a hug and you clung on to him, the sobs coming so suddenly you could barely breathe.
“You don't think these things, do you? That the men said?" You had to ask him, you had to know.
“What those men said is wrong. It's not true. I will never, ever expect anything from you or from Hailey. Or from any other women. I will never look down on you. I will never punish you, or Hailey. I swear to you, Y/N."
You believed him, you'd always believed that. But you had to ask because you had to be sure. You had to know that there were men like your brothers out there, among all the bad.
You'd have to face Jack and a trial. You'd have to tell people what he'd done and what you hadn't done. You didn't have a choice.
But you did have two brothers who loved you and who didn't blame you. Not only did you have them, you had people they worked with who were basically a family. Who would all fight to support you.
Nothing was okay right now, but with the love from the people surrounding you, you believed it could be.

Learning from the Best
This was originally requested by @ jayxupsteadx on wattpad on @ oneChicago2000 halstead sister imagines book. She asked me to help since I know a lot about hockey (and it's my favorite sport), and I got permission to just write it here. I hope you both like it!
Please remember to reblog and comment! I love hearing your thoughts!
Enjoy!
You don't really remember much about the early days of Jay's career, granted, you were only three at the time he began playing in the NHL and only two at the time he began playing in the AHL. Then, when you were three, your mom was getting sick, so he was home a lot more, but you didn't remember that since you were so young. The stuff you mostly remembered about that time was being in the hospital and one of your brothers taking you to get snacks and ice cream a lot of the time (which, was code for a grown-up conversation between your parents that you didn't need to be there for...but you never knew that).
Now that you were getting older, you were starting to understand that Jay played hockey. Not only that, but you were starting to understand the game itself. You didn't understand the little things like penalties and off-sides and icings and such, but you understood that each team tried to score on the other team to get a goal. And, if there was one thing your big brother, Jay, was good at, it was scoring goals.
Right now, you were sitting at the kitchen table with your brothers and Hailey and were waiting for Jay to come back with some cookies, which he had been telling you about all day. (Will had smacked him upside the head when he let this part of the plan slip because now you wouldn't stop bugging them about said cookies.)
"Hockey sticks?" you asked when Jay set a plate of cookies on the table and you quickly reached for one. "Why?"
"You know how I score a lot of goals, Y/N?" he asked and you began nibbling on your cookie and then nodded your head in response to his question. "Well, there's this game and it's called the All-Star game. So, since I'm really good, I get to play in it in a couple days."
Your eyes immediately started to well with tears. Your birthday is soon! Jay Jay was gonna miss your birthday because he had to play in this stupid game because he scored lots and lots of goals!
"You're gonna miss my birthday! No!"
You jumped up from your chair and started running from the table, but Will had quick enough reflexes and jumped up after you and scooped you up.
You heard Hailey saying something about giving you the other cookie first, but you didn't care.
"Let me go!" you wailed.
"Jay's gonna get another cookie for you. Just, hang on," Will soothed.
"I'm not missing your birthday, kiddo. Just, hang on a second."
You wiped your eyes. "You're not?"
"Nope. Let me get you another cookie, okay?"
You nodded and Will continued to rub your back.
Jay quickly left the room and went to the kitchen and grabbed one of the Mickey Mouse cookies he had bought earlier in the day. Hailey pulled out her phone and began recording.
"Mickey?" you asked and took the cookie from him.
"Uh-huh," Will said.
"And where does Mickey live, Y/N?" Hailey asked.
You furrowed your eyebrows and looked at Will. "His Clubhouse?"
At this, Will laughed. "Close. But, where's Cinderella's Castle?"
"Disney World!"
"And where does Mickey live?"
"His Clubhouse."
Jay laughed. "Good idea, Hails. But I think we have to spell it out for her."
"You can do the honors," Hailey told her husband. "After all, we're only going there because the All-Star Game is in Florida this year."
Last year, Jay had been nominated to go to the All-Star Game. But, since it was your fifth birthday and your first birthday without your mom and dad (your dad had passed six months before from a heart attack that Will said was due to broken heart syndrome from your mom passing), he took the two-game suspension. He didn't go, opting to stay home in Chicago with you, Will, and Hailey instead of going to Vegas to play in the All-Star Game. Jay was fully prepared to do that again this year, but when the news came out that the game was going to be played in Sunrise, Florida, he, Will, and Hailey decided that the perfect birthday gift for you would be going to Disney World for the couple days leading up to the game.
"We're going to Disney World!" Jay told you.
Your jaw dropped in the cutest way ever and you turned to Will. "We're going to Disney World, Will!"
He laughed. "I know! What princesses do you wanna see?"
"Rapunzel! And Moana! And Jasmine and Cinderella and Elsa and Anna! And Goofy and Pluto!"
"How about you finish your cookies though because we have to wake up early tomorrow to go on the plane," Will told you.
"Yes, please! Can we watch movies on the plane?"
"We sure can!"
"Can I wear my Rapunzel dress?"
Jay and Will looked at Hailey. After all, she was the one who did all your packing since Jay had been busy trying to coordinate the timing of going to Disney along with the game and all the press and everything else that came with it.
"It's all packed, don't you worry," Hailey reassured. "Should we eat your cookies on the couch while we watch Tangled?"
You nodded and Will set you down you grabbed your hockey stick cookie to go along with your Mickey Mouse cookie and then all of you made your way to the living room and Jay started to get the movie set up. Periodically throughout the movie, you'd say, "we're going to Disney!" Or "I get to see Rapunzel and Pascal and Flynn Rider!" Hailey, Jay, and Will could only smile at your excitement to go to the most magical place on earth.
***
The first night you were at Disney was pretty uneventful. You had to be up at four in the morning for an early flight, and once you got halfway through Moana, you were asleep with your head leaning against Will. So, when you got to the hotel, the adults decided it was best to just rent a movie on on-demand and let you rest for a little bit or else they'd have one grouchy almost-six-year-old on their hands. After that, they took you to Disney Springs (formerly, and what Jay and Will called it, Downtown Disney) where the four of you got dinner and then shopped around for Mickey ears to wear to Magic Kingdom tomorrow and other souvenirs. (You and Hailey got matching Mickey Ears and you got a fancy caramel apple that Will said he'd cut up for you to eat back at the hotel because you'd make a mess if you tried to eat it off the stick).
Now, it was the day you were finally going to Magic Kingdom! You were wearing your Rapunzel dress and Hailey had put your hair in a braid down your back and had put some decorative flowers in the braid so that you could be just like Rapunzel! You put on your Mickey ears and ate breakfast at the restaurant on the same Disney grounds where your hotel was and then you took the shuttle to Magic Kingdom.
"Where to first, kiddo?" Jay asked once you had gotten through security and into the park. "And, remember, you can't go running off."
"I know! Can we go to Cinderella's castle? Please?"
And that is how you continued the day. You started off at the castle and got some cute family photos (and Jay signed one or two autographs) and then went from there to ride the rides. You were too small for rollercoasters, so everyone did more kid-friendly rides that day.
Later that night, since you were on the Disney grounds, you got access to magic hours, where Magic Kingdom was open until 3 am for those who were staying at hotels located on the Disney grounds. So, Will offered to look after you when you got back to the hotel around 9 that night and Hailey and Jay stayed until you fell asleep and then they left to go ride all the rollercoasters.
Will was okay with this arrangement because the next day, you got a surprise to go to the Bippidy Boppidy Boutique. It was your birthday present because you wouldn't be able to go on your actual birthday because the All-Star Game was on your birthday. Hailey took you there where you got your makeup done and looked like an absolute princess and Will and Jay used this time to go ride Mission Space and Space Mountain.
And, the next day when you had to wake up early and go to a different hotel after eating more Mickey waffles and leaving Disney, you still had some of the silver glitter in your hair. And, Jay reposted a video that Hailey had posted of you at the Bippidy Boppidy Boutique that made all hockey fans gush at your cuteness. Jay hadn't expected it, but that same video would be brought up in an interview later in the day at a presser he had to attend...which was why you had to leave Disney earlier than anyone would have liked.
And for the family skate the day after that (the same day as the skills competition), well, the Halsteads still had a couple of tricks up their sleeves.
***
"Hey, man," Jonathan Toews said and gave Jay a bro hug before they sat down to do pressers the next day. "Y/N like Disney?"
"Absolutely loved it," Jay answered as pulled the mic closer to him so that he'd be set up before the media came in and started asking questions. "She was exhausted by the end of it, though. Slept like a rock."
"Oh, I bet. Ten bucks says that they're gonna ask you about it."
Jay scoffed. "I'm not stupid enough to bet against that. You know they'll ask. They're always nosy as hell."
"Smart man. No wonder you landed a cop."
"Fuck off," Jay laughed.
A minute later, the journalists and reporters started filing in and Jay put on his professional facade.
The first questions were the standard All-Star Game questions: who are you most excited to play with, what skills are you most excited to compete in/watch, etc. Then, there were some contract questions. And then, they asked a couple of players about how they liked the Florida weather. They asked Jay this question and he thought that was the end of that journalist talking, but then he continued.
"There were some pictures going around social media of you at Disney World. Didn't know you had a daughter. We knew you were married but—"
"Hey!" Toews yelled.
At the same time, Jay started to speak. "I don't." He shot a look to Jonathan, a look that he had seen many a time in games. It was a look that meant I got this. "First of all, she's not my daughter, she's my little sister. Which, you would know if you even did an ounce of research before coming in here and bringing up my family. Second of all, if didn't bother to do any research before interviewing me, I guess, I'll tell you myself."
Toews opened his mouth to speak but thought better of it. He didn't need to be on the news for cussing out a journalist, even if it was on behalf of his best friend and his best friend's family.
"Sorry if you guys are on a time crunch. You can blame him because this might get long." Jay knew he might be branded as one of the NHL's newest assholes for that comment, but he didn't care. He looked around the room and everyone was giving him their full attention, even the other players in the room. "I played junior throughout high school. My older brother, Will, did too up until his junior year. He decided he wanted to be a doctor more than he wanted to play hockey professionally, so he quit. I obviously kept going. I got drafted, played in the AHL, and then my mom got sick. She, uh, she died of cancer. My little sister was two at the time my mom was diagnosed and then the next year I started playing in the NHL and my mom was taking a turn for the worst, so I was home a lot more."
Jay took a deep breath because he started to feel himself getting choked up. No way in hell was he going to cry in a front of all these people. Toews gave his shoulder a quick squeeze.
"She passed away that year," Jay continued. "My sister was three. She doesn't really remember our mom. A year later, our dad passed away. Last year was my sister's first birthday without both her parents, and it was during the all-star break. So, I took the suspension so I could be home and she could have a semi-normal birthday. Me and my wife, Hailey, have full guardianship over her, so Hailey takes care of her most of the time I'm on the road. I wanted to be there for her birthday since it would be her first one where I'd be a parent-figure for her, and I wanted her to have a good memory of it.
"Now, I know you're gonna ask why I didn't take the suspension this year because you're a nosy—" Jay cut himself off and took a deep breath. He was going to call the guy a nosy prick but refrained from doing so. "You're nosy and I get it; it's your job to be nosy. But, I didn't take the suspension because we figured we'd take a little trip to Disney World for her birthday since the game's in Florida this year.
"So, no, she's not my daughter; she's my sister. And, you would've known this if you even bothered to do some research or God forbid looked at my social media."
Then, Jay stood up and promptly left the room. He could see the headlines now.
NHL Superstar Jay Halstead Storms out of Press Conference
But, he didn't care. And, he honestly thought he handled that quite well compared to what he could have said. He walked out to the parking lot and to his car. He knew he'd be getting texts from his fellow all-star teammates and opponents along with his teammates on the Blackhawks when they heard the news. Hell, even management might contact him for a statement. He hoped they wouldn't, but right now, he didn't really care. At that moment, Jay just wanted to go back to the hotel and spend the day with his family because he had promised you earlier before he left for the presser that he'd be back in time to go swimming with you at the hotel pool before dinner, and he'd be damned if he broke that promise because he was dealing with calls from everyone.
***
"Alright, how about you go get a drink, kiddo?" Jay suggested after he had launched you off his shoulders for the umpteenth time that afternoon.
"But, I'm not thirsty. I wanna keep playing!" you argued.
"And we know that," Will said, quickly throwing himself into the conversation. "You can keep playing after you get a drink. And, I need one too. How about me and you go to the vending machine?"
"Can I get the blue juice?" you asked excitedly.
"If they have blue Gatorade, yes, you can get it," Will confirmed.
"Okay!" Then, you scrambled out of the pool and over to where Hailey reading her book to start toweling off.
"You have cash on you or something?" Jay asked as the two brothers took their time getting out of the pool.
"Brought my wallet because it has insurance info. If something happens to Y/N when she's swimming, the last thing we need to be worrying about in the hospital is insurance because there is no way we'd remember to run to the room and grab it if we got rushed to the hospital."
Jay shook his head. "You can take the doc out of the hospital, but you can't take the doc out of the man."
"Not sure that's how you say it, but okay."
"Will!" you yelled.
"I'm coming, I'm coming," Will said, louder this time so that you could hear him. He then lowered his voice and turned his attention back to Jay. "Whatever's going on, you need to tell me or Hailey."
"What? How'd you know something's going on?"
"I didn't. You just had that look on your face like when you lost a playoff game. Figured something was off."
"You sneaky son of a--"
"Little ears, Jay!" Hailey yelled to him and Jay quickly shut his mouth.
Then, Will slipped on his slides and dried off and you slipped on your flip-flops and wrapped your towel tighter around you. Will slipped on his shorts and grabbed his wallet and then the two of you left the pool area, not without Will shooting a stern look at Jay.
"Everything okay?" Hailey asked as Jay toweled off and then sat down next to her. "You and Will took your sweet time coming over here."
Jay sighed. He should've known his wife would pick up on something like that; she interrogates criminals in Chicago after all.
"There might be some uh, not-so-flattering headlines about me from that presser today," Jay admitted.
"Not so flattering how?"
"I sort of chewed out a journalist...politely, though."
"How do you politely chew out a journalist, Jay?"
He sighed. "To be fair, he insinuated that I had a secret daughter because of the pictures he saw on social media of us at Disney World...and I kinda launched into our whole history with that. I didn't say Y/N's name, though."
That was one thing he, Will, and Hailey agreed on: they don't mention her name at pressers because there's weirdos in the world. And, when Jay posted things of you, he covered your face with an emoji since he had millions more followers than Hailey and Will had.
Then, Jay explained more in detail about what happened...and how he ultimately stormed out, which would likely be what all the headlines would focus on.
At the end of this, Hailey was smiling.
Jay looked at her with the most confused look on his face. "You're not mad?"
"No I'm not mad," she answered and then leaned closer to him and pushed his wet hair back from his face. "I wish I would've had someone like you growing up. You're a good dad, Jay."
"But I'm not her—"
"You and Will are the only father figures she knows. As far as I'm concerned, you're her dad. Maybe not by name, but in her heart."
Hailey could see the tears welling up in his eyes and he quickly blinked them away. "If that's true, then you're her mom in her heart, too."
"Jay..."
Then, the door to the pool area opened and you bolted inside, holding your blue Gatorade.
"No running!" Jay and Hailey in unison and then looked at each other while Will grabbed your hand to make you walk slower.
"Shit, maybe we're more parents than we thought," Jay laughed.
A few seconds later, you were next to Jay. "Will said you should throw Hailey in the pool next!"
"I was kidding!" Will tried to argue, but it was too late. Jay had already grabbed Hailey and was pulling her over to the edge of the pool, their previous conversation now already forgotten.
***
"What did I just say, missy?" Hailey asked sternly the next morning.
"No jumping on the bed," you said sadly and sat down.
"Exactly. No more jumping on the bed or else you don't get your surprise."
"A surprise! What is it?" you asked and quickly jumped off the bed and ran towards Hailey.
"It's a surprise, silly! I can't tell you."
"Please, Hailey! Please!"
"No can do, kiddo. You're just gonna have to wait until we go to where Jay Jay needs to go today."
"Will said we're just taking pictures, but that's no fun."
"We'll take some pictures, but that's not all we're doing. You'll have fun. I promise."
Then, Will came back in the hotel room since he had been at the gym getting a workout in.
"Will! Hailey said I get a surprise! What is it?" you asked and ran towards him. But, then you crinkled your nose in disgust and backed away. "You're stinky."
"Well, good morning to you, too, Y/N. And, if I tell you about the surprise, it wouldn't be a surprise now, would it?"
"No."
"My brother in the shower?" Will asked.
"Yup," Hailey confirmed.
"Hmm. Surprised you didn't jump in there—"
"Will! Little ears!" Hailey yelled before he could finish. "God, it's a wonder you two haven't corrupted her yet."
"Yeah, yeah," Will sassed. Then, he began pounding on the bathroom door. "Jay! Hurry up! Y/N wants her surprise!"
"Almost done!" Jay yelled back.
A couple minutes later, Jay came out of the bathroom wearing his jeans and one of the custom jerseys that they had made that said J. Halstead on the back and said All-Star Game plus the year outlined by a pair of Mickey ears on the front. The matching jerseys for all four of you were Hailey's idea.
"About time!" Will exclaimed. "Next time, we're getting at least two rooms. Lord knows you can afford it."
Jay rolled his eyes. "Yeah, yeah."
"You got the skates and helmet?" Will whispered when he passed Jay.
"In my bag in the rental," Jay confirmed.
***
"Toes!" you yelled at Jonathan Toews as you walked into the arena and spotted one of your brother's best friends and teammates.
"Y/N!" he yelled back and then walked up to you. "I heard somebody go to go to Disney World."
"Me! And the princesses did my makeup and hair really pretty!"
"I saw! Jay showed me a picture. Did you ride any rollercoasters?"
You quickly shook your head. "They're scary! And Will said I was too small to go on 'em anyway. He said I might get hurt."
"Well, I'm glad you had fun." He turned his attention to Jay. "Everything's set up. Hubs said he'll lead you to the practice rink." (Hubs being Jonathan Huberdeau who played for the Florida Panthers, which meant that this was his home arena, so he knew where everything was).
"Sounds good, thanks, man. After an hour, maybe two if she needs more time, we'll come back to the regular rink. I just don't want her falling with everyone around and then getting run over."
Toews laughed. "Understandable. Bye, Y/N! Have fun!"
"Bye, Toes!"
Once you got into the arena, you were quickly met by a guy who Jay called Hubs. He said hi to you and then started leading you somewhere. You just held on to Jay's hand and looked around the arena. It looked a little different than the one you normally saw Jay play in, but it was somewhat the same.
A couple of minutes later, you were sitting on a bench in the locker room and Jay set his hockey bag down. "We gonna watch you skate?" you asked.
"Even better," Jay told you.
"I get ice cream?"
"No," Jay laughed. "But maybe later if you're good." He paused. "You know how me, Will, and Hailey can all skate?"
"Uh-huh. But you're the best."
Jay watched Will roll his eyes but ignored him. "Now it's your turn to learn how."
You furrowed your little eyebrows. "But I don't have skates."
Then, Jay pulled a pair of pink hockey skates out of his bag, the perfect size for your little almost-six-year-old feet. "What about these?"
You gasped. "They're pink!"
"They are. Now, let me tie them and put on your helmet, and then we can teach you how to skate, hmm?"
***
Jay held your hand as you walked on the black mats and towards the ice. Will had dug out his medical bag from when he was the team doctor for Blackhawks during that year when Jay was a Blackhawk before your dad died. Then, he got a job in ED at Med so that he wouldn't be traveling all the time. One of them needed to be home consistently to take care of you after all. And, at this time, Jay and Hailey were only dating; they weren't married yet. He knew that you couldn't be too careful when learning how to skate, so despite how stupid he might look, he'd be skating around with a backpack on just in case something happened. And Hailey was behind you filming you and Jay walking towards the ice.
"I'm gonna go on first and then you're gonna grab my hands and I'm gonna help you on so you don't fall, okay?" Jay told you.
You nodded and Will grabbed onto your arm so that you wouldn't fall when Jay let go of your hand since it was your first time in skates.
Jay got on the ice and then spun around to face you. "Hold out your hands, kiddo."
"What- what if I fall?" you asked, starting to get nervous.
"Will's not gonna let go until I have your hands. And, he's got his doctor bag with him."
"Jay won't let you fall, Y/N," Will reassured. "But, if you do fall, I'll fix you right up."
"You promise?"
"I promise."
"Okay..."
Then, you reached your hands out and Jay grabbed them. You took a few choppy steps and then you were on the ice.
"What do I do now?" you asked.
"First, we're gonna move over so Hailey and Will can come on the ice. You just hold onto me, okay?"
You nodded and then Jay started skating backward, taking you with him.
"Can you pick up one foot?" Jay asked.
You shook your head. "What if I fall? I don't wanna fall!"
"You won't fall. And if you start to, I'll pull you right back up."
"You promise?"
"I promise," Jay confirmed.
"Okay..." You tentatively picked up your left foot half an inch off the ice. "I did it!" you exclaimed.
"Good job!" Jay praised while Will hooted and hollered next to him, also skating backward and facing you. "Now try the other foot."
You did so and for the next two laps, Jay skated slowly backward, pulling you with him while you kept picking up and putting down each foot, getting used to the movement. Then, he told you that he was going to let go of your left hand and you were going to do the same thing. It was a little harder, but Jay kept a tight grip on your right hand. When you stumbled a couple of times, he quickly grabbed your left hand and pulled you up, skated a few strides holding both your hands and then only held your right hand once more. You repeated that for another two laps.
Then, Jay slowly came to a stop near the benches and instructed you to hold on to the boards. You did so and then faced him.
"Watch my feet, okay?" Jay instructed.
"Uh-huh."
You continued holding on to the boards and looked down at his feet.
"I want you to pick up one foot and then push side to the side with one skate. Like this." He picked up his left foot off the ice and then pushed side to side on the ice with his right foot. He did that a few times and then switched to having his right foot on the ground and his left skate pushing from side to side.
Then, you did what Jay was doing and did so too many times to count. You started to fall the first couple of times, but Jay grabbed your arm to steady you each time and helped you pull yourself back up all the way using the boards.
"Now I want you to go back and forth," Jay said. "Right skate...left skate...right skate...left skate."
You started doing that as Jay said what skate to pick up. After doing that about five times, Jay was quiet and just kept doing the exercise with you.
Again, you stumbled a few times, but Jay made sure you didn't fall. Once he deemed you were good enough at that, he had Will hold onto your arm as you spun around. Then, Jay grabbed your hands again.
"I'm gonna skate backward and hold your hands and you're gonna do what we were just doing," Jay told you as he grabbed your hands.
Once Will deemed his grip on your arm was no longer needed, he let go.
"Right foot, left foot?" you asked.
"Right foot, left foot. Exactly," Jay confirmed.
Jay started skating as slowly as he possibly could, at what felt like a snail's pace, as you went and started doing what you called right foot left foot.
"I'm doing it!" you beamed.
After doing two laps of that--which took a little under twenty minutes--and many, many stumbles, Jay decided you were ready to skate without him.
Hailey saw the hesitation on your face and came up to whisper in her husband's ear.
"Go skate and fall down. Show her that even the pros fall down sometimes," she told him.
Jay smiled. That was a perfect idea.
"Y/N, I'm gonna have you take Hailey's hand and stand here. Me and Will are gonna race real quick, okay?"
"Okay!" you exclaimed.
Jay dropped one of your hands and Hailey took hold of it. Then, Jay let go of you completely while Will followed him over to the goal line.
"Why are we racing? Y/N looks good enough to skate on her own," Will inquired.
"Hailey suggested it might look good if I fall down so that she sees that even the pros fall. So, when we get to the other goal line, I'll slam on the brakes and purposely fall."
Will smiled and shook his head. "I think your wife's smarter than you, Jay."
"Oh, I know she's smarter than me."
The two got set and then Jay gave Hailey a thumbs up and she counted down from three and then they were off.
True to his word, Jay came to a hard stop at the opposite end of the ice--a routine stop for him and anyone else who played hockey--but then he purposely fell down.
He quickly got up and brushed himself off, but not without Hailey asking if he was okay and you gasping really loud. You didn't think Jay ever fell down when he skated!
"I'm fine!" he shouted back. Then, he skated back over to you and Hailey. "See, Y/N, even the pros fall down. Now, you wanna try skating by yourself? We'll be right here the whole time."
***
After doing one lap by yourself, with many falls, but still being excited that you could skate by yourself, the adults decided it was time to go out to the main rink where everyone else was skating. That way, it didn't look bad that Jay was missing the skate after yesterday's comments and there would be someone to take a picture of all four of you together.
When you got over there, Jay once again tied your skates for you and then helped you onto the ice.
"You ready?" Jay asked.
"Uh-huh," you said.
Then, Jay dropped your hand and you began to skate at a snail's pace. But, despite you not coming at the players or their families very fast, it was like the Red Sea was parting for you: anyone who was able to quickly skated out of the way of your path.
When you reached halfway around the rink you grabbed onto the boards of the benches and yawned.
"Tired?" Jay asked.
You shook your head, but then yawned again.
Then, you heard one of your brother's friends saying your name and looked to see Jonathan Toews skating toward you. He slowly stopped and then stooped down to your height.
"Looks like somebody learned how to skate. Give me five!"
You gave him a high five and then yawned again. Learning to skate was tiring!
"I think little miss ice princess needs a break," Hailey said. "I can take her to get a snack. You boys can stay."
Toews quickly shook his head. "You three stay. I can take Munchkin for a snack."
"You sure?" Jay asked.
"Absolutely. I've missed my favorite god kid."
Yes, that's right. Jonathan Toews was your godparent.
"Wanna go with Toes, kiddo?" Jay asked.
"Yeah!" Toes always bought you the best candy.
"Okay, be good."
Then, Toews took your hand and skated with you to the end of the rink and helped you off.
"Don't get her too hyped up on sugar!" Will yelled, which caused Toews to flip him off (without you seeing of course).
As you got older, you obviously didn't remember everything about this week. You remembered snippets of Disney World and learning to skate and going out for breakfast right before the skills competition since it was your birthday and cheering Jay on at the skills competition and the game and asking Will way too many questions about why a whistle was blown or why a player was doing this or that. But, it wasn't until you got older that you grasped how famous Jay actually was. As it turned out, you had learned how to skate from some of the best in the world. But, as a six-year-old, to you, this was just your brother and your brother's friends hanging out and playing a sport they loved and helping you learn to enjoy pieces of that game and learn to skate along the way. A/N: Sorry I haven't updated in a while! I've been going through a lot of stuff, so it's been hard for me to get motivated to write. But, thank you for reading! Deja Vu II
Part I
Okay so, I have been researching more and trying to get things at least somewhat accurate before I wrote part two. In the first part, I wrote TBI, with further research, what I was actually trying to write is an Anoxic brain Injury (still technically a TBI). The whole idea there is when the brain is starved of oxygen critical functions are impacted and there can be a whole bunch of differing symptoms after it. OBVIOUSLY, I am NOT a medical professional, so take everything with a big ol' grain of salt. I am thinking of writing some more parts to this but purely when I have time bc adult life sucks. I kept the ending open but also al actual end, unlike the first part. Hope it is somewhat enjoyable.
WARNINGS: Medical stay, seizures, talk of needles + medical procedures, hospitals, Will and Jay being their usually angsty selves, poor writing and zero editing
Tumblr media
"Will?"
Abrams looked between the Halsteads, not sure what his place was. Everyone remembered when Pat Halstead passed, mostly because the Halstead brawl was talked about for weeks. Will Halstead was known for causing headaches for plenty of people around Med, he was the topic of gossip all through the building.
Abrams was saved by the bell - literally. His pager started beeping, excusing him from the brewing storm between the brothers.
"I'll put in for the tests," He tossed over his shoulder, disappearing into the stream of medical workers.
"Will." Jay snapped, glowering at his brother.
Will scrubbed a hand down his face, "Abrams needs to run more tests."
"More tests?" Jay pressed, "What just happened, Will?"
Will shook his head, looking at his younger brother he knew, telling Jay how bad this might be, would destroy him. Jay hated hospitals, hated medical things in general. Will couldn't look him in the eye and plant the same fear he had gnawing at him.
"I don't know, Jay," Will sighed, "I'm not a neurologist."
Jay didn't want to accept his answer, but Will didn't give him much of a chance. He turned back to your hospital room, forcing a smile as he entered.
"What was that about?" You asked, exactly where they left you.
"Just more tests," Will smiled. He stopped at the top of your bed, checking you over with doctor's eyes. You could always tell when he flipped between Big Brother and Doctor because Big Brother Will wore his emotions. Doctor Will was better at keeping his poker face like he was now.
Will's eyes flittered around the monitors before settling back on yours. His eyes softened, the slight furrow in his brow disappearing and a smile pulling on his lips again.
"You feeling alright?"
You nodded, "I'm just tired."
Will nodded, he reached out and brushed the hair off your forehead, "Get some sleep, yeah? We'll be here the whole time."
Jay reached out and squeezed your hand, before pulling up the blanket and tucking you in.
Tumblr media
A few hours later, you were sitting up in your hospital bed while a Neurology Tech attached electrodes to your scalp. Jay had left for home, for a shower and clean clothes. He promised he would bring back your blanket and pillow and some other stuff to make you more comfortable, seeming Will said it would be okay.
While he was gone, Will sat at the end of the bed, holding your hand through the Electrode placement. After the Tech finished, you were attached to a monitor with wires upon wires, all differing colours. The tech apologized for the cap that sat over all the leads, promising it wasn’t too bad.
“it’s a new fashion trend,” you joked, smiling at the tech, “Nuero floor chic.”
The tech laughed, continuing her work. When she was done, she walked you through what she had done. Explaining the placement and the leads, and how it all worked.
"This is your personal EEG," She explained, gesturing to the boxy machine on wheels that your wires were attached to, "Try to keep it close."
She explained a few more things, then promised to return in a little while. In her absence, Dr. Abrams stopped through again. He looked over the techs work, mumbling to himself and making medical comments only Will understood.
"How are you feeling?" He asked.
You had already taken a nap, so you weren't as tired as you had been.
"Sick of sitting," You said, stretching your legs and accidentally nudging Will in the process. Will playfully batted at your feet, feigning offence.
Abrams pulled at the EEG machine on wheels, testing how the wheels glided, "If you are feeling up for it, you can go for a small walk."
You lit up, "I can?"
"If you take it slow," Abrams ordered, "And Will is by your side."
Will nodded, "Are you feeling up for it?"
"Yes."
Will helped you detangle yourself from the blanket, letting you adjust to being fully upright for the first time that day. Your feet dangled over the bed as you took a moment to compose your spinning head. Will pulled a pair of socks over your bare feet, muttering something about keeping your toes warm. He held your arm as you stood up, supporting your weight as your body adjusted again.
"You alright?"
"Mmm," You responded, focused on staying upright.
"Okay," Will wrapped an arm around your waist, "One step at a time, we'll try to make it to the nurse's station and back."
It was slow going. With every step you took, it felt like the world was twisting, like walking through an earthquake. Will's arms hovered around you, only holding you up when you needed the support. He was so steady in his support, his warm presence keeping you grounded and calm.
Two steps outside of your room, Jay bounded up with your pillow and blanket tucked under his arm.
"They're upright," He commented, "Nice hair, too."
He reached out and pretended to ruffle your hair, careful to avoid touching the wires around your head. You reached out to smack his hand, but missed drastically.
You frowned at Jay, frustration barely contained, "Sshut. uphh."
The words sounded fumbled through your gritted teeth. Abrams had mentioned how you needed to take things slow and Will tried to tell you that it might be frustrating at first, but you weren’t expecting to feel such anger. It was gnawing away at you. A week ago you were dancing around with Makayla, wrangling her for a weekend while Kim and Adam worked. You had run around, danced, sung, every little thing that made Makayla happy. Not you hardly knew how to move your feet, could hardly tell what direction was up.
The anger grew and held firm in your head, making itself known with its red cloud fogging your mind.
Will grabbed your hand, "You okay?"
"Hmm."
Your vision blurred, everything swaying and twisting as you fell forward.
Will was faster than Jay was, for once. He saw the signs a mile away, already braced for when you would fall. He held you to his chest, lowering both of you to the ground and cradling your head as your body started to convulse.
Jay immediately dropped what he was carrying, falling to his knees by your side. Jay looked up at Will trying to ask silently what to do, but the eldest Halstead had gone full doctor mode.
"Need some help over here!" Will shouted, calling for the nurse's assistance.
"I need you to breathe,” Will spoke with such certainty, like he was treating any other patient.
“You’re okay,” Will kept repeating, “Just breathe, I’ve got you.”
Jay was ushered out of the way by the nurses, who crowded in with monitors and equipment to help Dr Halstead. All Jay could do was watch helplessly.
Jay held his breath as the medical team got you off the ground and transferred you back to the hospital bed. The leads they had removed that morning were reattached, placed on your ashen skin.
Dr Abrams rushed into the room and ordered Will to get out of his way, the forced politeness gone now the situation was emergent. Will stepped back, somewhat dubiously, letting Abrams run his team.
“How did you do that?” Jay asked when will stood by his side, the pair of them watching as Abrams and the team worked.
With a dose of meds, the convulsions stopped, but the team checked over the leads and kept working.
“Do what?” Will asked, turning to look at his brother. Jay had grown pale, the fear and anxiety he felt spelt out across his features. His eyes kept darting from you to the heart monitor screen like it was going to flatline.
“Stay so calm?” Jay whispered, taking a deep breath for the first time in the last few minutes. The nurses placed a mask over your face, securing it behind your head and then leaving the Halsteads and Abrams in the room.
“Jay…” Will tried to find a way to explain it, how he could just shut off his fear in that moment to help you. But he couldn’t find the words.
“She’s stable,” Abrams spoke in the silence that had formed, “From now on, we’ll keep giving her (insert med) to keep her relaxed. No more strolls, even if it is supervised.”
Will nodded, taking it in.
Abrams was mostly speaking to Will, Jay was by your side, focused solely on you. He held your hand, careful to avoid the IV that was in the back of it. He watched you breathe, every-time you exhaled, he watched the mask fog up. He listened to the quiet puffs and the melodic beeping. You were okay. He kept trying to force himself to remember that. You were okay.
“Hopefully we can get this under control. In the meantime, we’ll keep monitoring, keep on with the EEG testing for the next few hours. Hopefully we’ll learn more.”
Will nodded, clapping Abrams on the back, “Thanks, Sam.”
The big brother in him wanted to press for answers, but the doctor in him knew that sometimes Doctors didn’t have the answers. If Abrams knew, he would share.
Will did a check over you and the monitors with his eyes, again. Then looked over to Jay, who looked completely deflated. It was no secret that Jay hated hospitals and medical treatment in general, especially needles. Spending time in hospitals usually gave him the creeps and he would always say to Will, “I don’t know how you do it, man.”
But Jay hadn’t complained even once. Not when he was watching the IV get put in your hand, or while you were attached to countless machines. Will knew it was because he felt hopeless. The same look that he wore at their dads bedside he wore now. Will stood and stared for a while, the memory playing in his mind in time with real life. This was different. You weren’t on life support like your father had been, things were different. That didn’t change the memories Will had of his dads last moments plaguing his mind.
“I stayed calm because i had too,” Will finally spoke. Jay looked up, watching his brother cross his arms over his chest and take a deep breath.
“I had to stay calm, for her.”
Jay shook his head, “I just froze, Will. And you-“
“Trained for years to react in medical emergency situations, spent years working the ER,” Will interrupted.
“Jay,” Will reached over the bed and gave jays shoulder a reassuring squeeze, “I do this every day. I know how to tune out the emotions and focus on medical stuff.”
“Yeah, I guess.”
Will sat on one of the chairs, mirroring Jay across the bed, “Listen. I could never get used to being shot at, could never be shot at and react how you do. Because I’m not trained, I’m not good at that. You aren’t a doctor Jay, stop beating yourself up over something that was a basic human reaction.”
Jay didn't answer, letting silence fall over the room. Neither one of the brothers was up for a conversation, mostly just consumed with their own thoughts as they watched you sleep.
You had stirred a few times in the coming hours but mostly stayed sleeping. Will told Jay that it was a combination of the medication and the stress of recent events catching up with you. In his words, it was nothing to worry about.
"Hey," A soft voice called from the door, Will and Jay stood to greet Hailey as she stepped into the room.
Will and Jay had been off work since you had gotten worse, staying by your side or close by ever since. Both Voight and Goodwin understood, giving them all the time they needed.
"I brought some supplies," Hailey joked, handing food over to the brothers, "And I stopped by home and Wills, got some clothes."
"Thanks, Hailey."
"Yeah, Of course." Hailey stood by Jay, taking his hand for his comfort. "How's she doing?"
Will relayed the events of the day, the incident in the hall and all the things that had happened since. Things were moving fast, more tests and hopeful treatment plans were being talked about.
"It'll be okay," Will finished, mostly trying to convince Jay more than himself. He knew the look on Abram's face, knew that everything was far from okay.
Tumblr media
Will told Jay to go back to work after a week, promising him that sitting by your side was a one-man job. Will had spoken to Goodwin, who agreed to let him take his occurred PTO for as long as he needed. So for the three weeks you were in the hospital he stayed by your side. You weren't used to having Will there every single minute of every single day, but you didn't mind it too much. Mostly he helped you go on walks or watched over you like a personal nurse. You knew that he and Jay were worried, but the overprotective brother act was suffocating at times. During the last week of your stay, you managed to convince him to let you have more space - that when he left the room you wouldn't make a break for it like Jay would. He agreed hesitantly, mostly hanging around from lunch until you fell asleep at night. You complained to Jay when he visited every day, but you were thankful he was there.
On the last few days of your time in the hospital, you were more independent, nothing like what you were before the accident, but more than before. You could walk small distances unsupported and some of your fine motor skills came back. The PT had told you it was common after TBI's for patients to lose control of their movements and motor skills, she promised that you would get better as time went on.
Dr Abrams had spoken to Will and Jay about Rehabilitation centres, there were a few in the city that focused on TBI rehabilitation but Will had been dragging his feet. Jay wanted to do what was best for you, even if it meant you might have to stay in a rehab facility. Will had a sour taste in his mouth over it all.
"Come in," Goodwin called from inside her office.
Will pushed open the door, greeting Sharon and Peter.
"What can I help you with, Doctor Halstead?" Sharon asked after Peter had left.
Will explained his plan, reviewing all the details he had sorted out. When he finished, Sharon was nodding in approval.
"Are you sure about this?"
"I am," Will was sure nothing could change his mind now.
"Okay then, I will talk to Dr Archer, and see how we can help," Goodwin bid Will the best, letting him continue on his way.
Will met Jay right outside your room, almost running straight into him.
"Will," Jay grabbed his brother's arm, "We need to talk about the rehab facility-"
"Yeah," Will nodded, "I know, i have a plan."
Will ushed Jay back into the room. He gestured to Jay to a chair and took a seat at the end of your bed. You were expecting him to stop by, sitting up properly on the bed expecting some kind of serious conversation from the eldest Halstead.
"What is it, doc?" You joked.
Will smiled, reaching out and holding your hand, "I have spoken to Dr Abrams and Sharon Goodwin and I have decided that we won't be trying to find a rehab facility."
Jay sighed, he had been arguing with Will about this for the better part of the week. "Will-"
"I think you should stay with me," Will told you directly, "I've taken a leave of absence, I think you should be home and recovering."
You looked to Jay, who was just as surprised. Jay hardly got caught off guard by Will, right now he had never been more surprised.
"Are you sure?" Jay broke the silence that settled over the room.
"If that is what you want?"
You could feel the joy blooming in your chest, a wide smile breaking across your face, "Yes. Please, yes."
Will mirrored your grin, pulling you into a tight hug and kissing your forehead. At times like this, you were reminded how much Will and Jay became like parents to you after your father's death. Although it was painful for all of you, you didn't have a good relationship with your father. He was never caring or affectionate, he never came to your sports games or awards, that was all Jay and Will. They stepped up and took care of you, they always have and promised they always would. You were so drained from the last few days of tests and the week in the hospital that you felt like you might burst into tears.
Will could sense your fragile state, staying sitting by your side and holding your hand. Jay got to his feet and pulled you into a hug too, then clapped Will on the back.
“So when am I allowed out?” You pressed, hoping to be home and somewhere familiar.
“Slow your roll,” Jay laughed, “There's still things that need to be organized.”
You let out a loud dramatic sigh, “I hate it here,” You whined.
Will wrapped an arm around your shoulders, pulling you into him and playfully messing up your hair, “It won't be too much longer, promise.”
“Pinky promise?” You raised your finger, dramatically pouting.
Will indulged you, linking his pinky through yours and giving you a serious stare, “Pinky promise.”

One of Those Days || Jay Halstead x Halstead Sister
Tumblr media
We deserved more interactions between Kim and Jay, that's all I'm saying.
I was thinking about this day where I was feeling super shitty at school, my self harm habits were horrible back then and I always wanted to cry. Since my mom was working, I texted my aunt and she took me to her house. She knew I was pretending to have a headache, but anyway followed my game. My little cousin lend me her bed to lay down and she decided it was a good idea to read The Little Prince for me to fall asleep 💕
“Do you want me to call your dad?” The receptionist at school asked the girl infront of her. Her head was slightly lowered and her hair covered a good part of her face.
“Can you call my brother instead?” Becca asked in a low crackly voice.
The receptionist sighed, “Sure. But you know I can’t let you go without your dad’s permission”
The girl nodded and sat in the hard plastic chairs of the office to wait while the woman spoke on the phone.
“…Yes, she has a headache…She’s alright, but seems like it’s getting worse. The nurse checked her, but can’t really do much. Sure, she’s at the office. Thank you, Mr. Halstead”
“Becca, your brother will be here as soon as he can. Go get your stuff, I’ll call your dad to let him know”
She didn't really have a headache, but it seemed like "fake it 'til you make it" was a real thing because she was now starting to feel discomfort in her head. Although it might have been because she was struggling not to cry in front of everyone. Her nose was now red, and her eyes were watery. Everybody thought it was due to allergies or the flu, but in reality, she was swallowing hard, trying to retain tears rolling down.
“Let’s go, Beccs”, Jay said while picking up his sister’s backpack from the floor.
The walk to the parking lot was silent; she knew that if she talked, she would burst into tears. A hole in her chest appeared the minute she saw her brother, and now it was growing fast inside of her.
Jay was eagerly typing on his phone, dealing with work issues he couldn't leave for later. He was worried; since he received the call from the school, his gut told him Becca's emergency wasn't about being sick, and now, even looking at her sideways, he could confirm it.
The detective opened the car a few steps before they reached it. Both siblings went to the same side of the truck, the girl ready to jump inside, while her brother was putting her belongings on the back seat. When Jay closed the door, Becca was still outside waiting for him. She was scratching her eye, and as soon as their gazes crossed, she started to silently cry. Instinctively, brother and sister took a step forward to hug each other; there was no time for Jay to bend to her height, so she squeezed his waist tightly.
"Did something happen, or is it only the feeling?" He tilted his ear to be able to hear the answer.
Becca moved her head, saying no, her face still sunken in his stomach, "Only the feeling."
"Alright," he softly said. They stayed like that for a moment before actually going inside the truck.
With a mixture of affection and concern, Jay stared at his sister before starting the car. "Do you want to talk?" He spoke gently. Her delicate attempt to wipe away the evidence of her tears with the sleeve of her sweater tugged at his heartstrings.
Becca despised being seen in such a fragile state; the vulnerability on display only heightened her emotions. It struck her as ironic that the very person who made her feel secure and shielded, her brother, was the one in front of whom she felt the most exposed. In the tumult of her emotions, Jay remained her safe person, the only one she could trust.
"It's the pain in the chest, the black hole. It's growing."
He frowned with a slight nod. Jay knew perfectly what she was talking about, and he hated to be so powerless about it.
"I don't want to go home," she begged. Becca's face made Jay's heart drop; you could see the pain in her puffy eyes and her cheeks a bit swollen along with her pink nose.
He swallowed hard, "I honestly wouldn't take you there even if you asked me to. You are coming with me, but I still have things to do at the bullpen."
“I can wait”
On the road back to the 21st District, Jay’s phone never stopped ringing, but anyway he passed by a drive-thru to get an ice-cream for Becca, a nice attempt to cheer her up a bit.
“Feeling a bit better?” He asked before getting inside of the building. At least, the crying was controlled for a moment. “Alright, let’s go”.
It was obvious she had been crying, but nobody said a thing about it. All the cops, detectives and seargets greeted the girl with a warm smile and acted normal around her.
Becca stayed in the coffee room and never got out of there. After all the weeping, exhaustion took its toll, and she found herself drifting into sleep on the arm of the sofa. Jay periodically entered to check on her, his stress evident as he felt the weight of time pressing against him. The clock relentlessly ticked away, yet the workload showed no sign of diminishing.
Kim noticed, and after preparing to leave by taking her coat and bag, she approached her friend. "Hey! I'm already done here and heading home. If you want, and if she wants to, I can take Becca with me. I just need to pick up Mak from school, and then we'll be home."
The detective hesitated, “Uhm—“
"Look, I don't know what's going on with her, but at least she can properly rest there..." Kim's voice carried a note of genuine concern, her eyes reflecting a mix of empathy and worry for both of them.
They turned their heads to see how the girl was all tangled in her spot.
“Are you sure?”
“Positive. That way you won’t have the pressure—I mean, you’ll still have the pressure, but it will be different knowing she’s comfortable in a safe place…I know the feeling, Jay”
After a few seconds of deliberating in his mind, he thankfully agreed only for his sister’s comfort.
“Don’t worry, don’t rush. You can pick her up whenever you can, doesn’t matter if it’s late”, Burgess said before departing and Jay knew she was honest, “I’ll take care of her”
Makayla was delighted with Becca's presence but was too shy to interact with her. Since they didn't have visitors often, this was kind of a new experience for her.
"Mak," her mom called, "Becca is not feeling very well, would you lend her your bed for a little while so she can rest?"
"Sure!" Despite her short life, Makayla's tender heart had already weathered enough storms, shaping her into a compassionate soul capable of understanding when someone else was beaten down or in pain. She sensed all that in Becca and was willing to make her feel good. "I can even lend her my stuffies," she added as an innocent gesture. Now addressing their guest directly, she continued, "They'll keep you company and won't be scary if you wake up in the dark."
Kim guided Becca to the room and arranged everything for her, picking up some clothes and toys that her daughter had left on the floor. Meanwhile, Makayla was opening drawers and climbing them to reach the highest shelf where the books were placed.
"There you go, make yourself comfortable," Burgess said while still fixing the unmade bed.
“And I’ll read you something to help you sleep”, Makayla approached holding a big book with her small hands.
“Mak, sweetie, no. We’re going out while she sleeps, okay? But you can read to me”, she took her hand to lead her out.
“No, mom. She doesn’t need to be alone right now”, Makayla’s big dark eyes were over Becca. “She needs a story, that’s what you do when I am sad”
Suddenly, the pain in Becca's chest intensified, and the gaping hole seemed to expand. It was as if her new little friend could read her mind. Becca yearned to be alone to release the pent-up tears, yet a lingering understanding told her that solitude might not be the best course of action.
“It’s alright, Kim. This her room, after all”
“Yas!” Mak jumped out of excitement. “Now, you lay down here and close your eyes. I’m going to read you a story that always make me feel better when I am not happy…”
With a smile and slowly going out of the room, Burgess leaved the two girls alone.
“The Little Prince is one of my favorite books too, Makayla”
“I knew it” her smile was bright.
As Becca listened to the reading, she feigned sleep. A few tears escaped her eyes, but she skillfully concealed them. Eventually, the reading ceased, and Becca sensed Mak's tiny face drawing near, checking if she was truly asleep. The youngest Halstead heard Makayla's footsteps departing from the room, but then she returned, placing a stuffed animal between Becca's arms. "Don't leave her alone, Buttons," she whispered before descending the stairs with her mommy.
Slowly, Becca opened her eyes and as soon as she made sure she was alone, she started an intense crying, trying not to make a lot of noise. She turned to give her back to the door, hidding in case someone came in. Clutching the stuffed animal tightly, she cried until exhaustion enveloped her, eventually lulling her into a fitful sleep.
She awoke in Jay's bed, disoriented about how she got there, a Mak's plush toy still nestled between her arms. Rising from the bed, a sudden wave of dizziness hit her, her head throbbing, and the discomfort in her chest persisting. When she emerged into the living room, her brother was seated on the sofa. Becca raised Buttons with one hand, a question mark etched on her face, silently seeking an explanation.
“Makayla insisted you should take it for tonight”, he answered simply.
“Oh. That's sweet”
"How are you feeling?" Jay asked, standing up to approach her, but she just shrugged. "Stupid question?"
"It's just—"
"One of those days," he completed. "I know."
"A terrible one, and it's not over yet" There was a long silence and Jay knew she was trying to say something, so he gave her time. "I was scared, Jay."
Those last words sent shivers down his spine, he understood what she was referring to and was also frightened but couldn't admit it in front of her. He masked his concern, assuring her, "You should never be scared, I'm here with you."
"I know", she gave him a hug.
"Do you want to talk now?" Becca hurriedly said no only with her head, and her brother understood.
"Okay", Jay sighed, "You haven't eaten a thing all day. Food should make you feel better. What about pizza, a movie, and the company of your favorite brother, hm?"
"What? Is Will coming?" Becca teased him, finally smiling.
"Ha! A joke, that's a sign that you are already feeling better."
The evening unfolded and laughter echoed through the room as they enjoyed the movie. Yet, even in her weariness, Becca managed to stay awake for a fleeting moment. As she drifted into sleep, the pain in her chest, a constant companion throughout the day, was miraculously eased by the gentle touch and care of her brother.

Break Through Au
Word Count: 1.6k
Summary: You go out ice skating on the lake with your brothers and Things don’t go as planned for you three
Warnings: CPR/Death, Falling through Ice, Hospitals, Yelling
—----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You were on the ice with your brothers Will and Jay, even though you weren’t allowed to, you guys still went regardless.
It was 10pm, no one would be out here to get in your way or yell at you to get off the ice.
“Cmon Y/n/n, it's better out here” Jay said while attempting to slide farther out to the lake.
“I don’t know Jay, I kinda wanna stay over here. That way I get off easier than struggling to get off if I'm way over there.” you shrugged.
“Alright then, me and will be over there if you need us' ' He pointed towards the middle of the lake.
“Alright, I’m just gonna slide around.” You shivered. Maybe I should work more layers. You thought to yourself.
After a while you got bored and decided to go over to Will and Jay who were “fighting” over who got the better hockey stick.
Will pulled out his phone and checked the time. “Guys it’s 11 o'clock, she should head home now, if we all get a cold moms gonna know that we went outside without asking her, especially if Y/n gets sick”
“But I'm getting good at hockey,” you whined.
Will and Jay just have you that look. “Alright alright let’s go” You caved.
Because your brothers were better on ice than you were, they went up ahead of you.
“GUYS! I'M NOT AS FAST AS YOU SLOW DO-“ Before you could finish your sentence a loud Crack interrupted you.
That made the two Halstead brothers come to a halt and turn around to you. “No,” Jay whispered. “Y/n don’t move, just stay still we’ll come to you”
Before you could say anything the Ice broke.
Jays pov:
“Y/N, SHIT NO” I screamed, my little sister just fell through the ice.
Me and Will immediately slide over to where she fell in and I immediately throw my whole arm in the freezing water to see if I can feel Y/n
“Give me your other arm so I can pull you once you get her!” Will shouts.
“Once I touch something that feels semi to a human arm I pull. I can tell it’s Y/n because once I pull I feel a bit of weight.
“PULL WILL, PULL”
Once we were towards the edge of the Lake I pick y/n up bridal style and rushed over to land.
“Put her down here.” Will says.
“What the hell do we do?” I cry
“She’s not breathing, Jay, you need to run back to the house and call someone” Wills is studying medicine so he knows a couple of things about what to do in a life or death situation.
“WHO DO I CALL?” I shout
“I DO GIVE A FUCK, CALL 9-1-1 AND HURRY”
My body moves into autopilot as I’m running through the forest making sure I don’t trip on any rocks or roots.
My legs are burning and I can’t breathe but I can’t stop, if I stop Y/ns gonna die and it’ll be all my fault.
As I reach the house I punch in the code to the door and run upstairs to my bedroom.
I basically almost threw my  phone into the air while trying to pick it up.
“9-1-1 what’s your emergency?”
“It’s -it’s my sister, she fell into the lake and I don’t know if she’s breathing”
“Check if she has a pulse”
“My older brother is with her at the lake, he-he's studying medicine so he knows what he’s doing”
“What’s your name sweetheart?”
“Uhh jay, my names Jay”
“Alright Jay, How old is your sister and how long was she under water for?”
“I don’t- 5 minutes maybe, and her name is Y/n, but we all call her Y/n/n. I don't know what I’m gonna tell my mom, that my littler sister died because we didn’t listen to her?” I’m panicking.
“Jay, I’m gonna need you to take a deep breath, I have help coming on the way right now”
How did she get my location? I didn’t even tell her.
***
The paramedics arrived and Jay led them to the lake where Will was with you.
Will did successfully get you back but you were still unconscious.
Why didn’t we just listen?
***
“15 Year old Female Y/n Halstead, Hypothermia after falling through ice, Was unconscious on site and Has a history of Heart issues.” The paramedic listed off all the things
(Ik that Grey's anatomy is in Seattle but because the show is so old let’s just pretend that this happened with them, it’s been awhile since I’ve watched it so if I make mistakes Woops)
“Alright,on my count if we move her. 1…2…3”Alex said.
Alex looked you over and started telling Jo things to do. “I want a head Ct, Keep me updated on her temperature and get me Derek for a consult.” Jo nodded.
Jay and Will followed Dr. Karev outside. “Is she gonna be ok?” Jay asked.
“She’s not out of the woods yet, but we won’t know more until she wakes up which will be a couple of hours”
***
“Jay Halstead and Will Halstead” A stern voice called to them that made them Gulp.
“What in the world happened, and why did the Atwater’s call me and say that something happened on the lake and I needed to come home?” Your Mom stoked with her hands on her hips.
Jay and Will glanced at each other and knew they had no way out of this so they just decided to tell the truth and get it over with.
“I have told you guys time and time again not to play on that lake during the winter,
If you want to go ice skating go to the bigger one. Y/n has been punished enough, and as for you too, just until we get home, me and your father Will real with you. Do you understand?”
“Yes mom,” The boys said together.
“Alright, either the Atwater’s or the Uptons are going to pick you guys up and take you home. I will stay here with your sister, your father should be at home by now”
“But mom-“ Jay said. “No buts, wait here”
***
It had been a couple of weeks since the incident and A lot had happened.
You were on the News, people came to your school and spoke about Ice safety. Jay and Will were indeed grounded but only for two weeks. The lake was now closed off while they were still doing an investigation. Which you didn’t understand why because it’s not like anything else happened but it was whatever.
“Y/n hurry up you’re going to miss the bus!” Jay shouted from downstairs.
“HOLD ON IM COMING” You grabbed your backpack and ran down the stairs.
After getting all your stuff in your backpack you got all your stuff ready to walk to the bus stop.
“Alright, what’s the rules?” Will questioned you.
“No wandering off to the other lake, don’t take off my jackets unless I really need to and don’t get anything that will drop my body temperature”
“Good.”
“Do you still have to put my hat and Jacket on for me? I’m 15 years old.”
“Because of recent events and mom being gone and I’m going to leave soon I need to make sure you're ok, plus your body temperature is still not to its normal temp yet so layers it is.” You rolled your eyes at what would be said.
“I will pick you up for your doctor's appointment maybe 30 minutes before school ends, and Jay will drop your lunch off at the front office” Will said as he started walking at the door.
“Bye will see you later”
Once Will was gone, you ate the last of your waffles and grabbed your hot chocolate or what Jays calls “Jay's famous Hot chocolate” but it tasted like any other drink.
***
“I miss having you out on the lake by the middle school” Your friend Ellie said.
“Me too, but ever since my mom died Will and Jay have been strict on what I can do since my dad won’t really do much and they're trying to get me to learn stuff before Will leaves for New York and Jay leaves to serve” You shrugged.
“But I did convince Jay to get you some fries and nuggets” You laughed
“You are literally the best, I really didn’t feel like spending all my money in my account today” Yeah the school food was expensive but it’s because you guys had fast food restaurants in your cafeteria so I guess it made sense.
***
“Hey Nugget” Will greeted you as you got into the car.
“Hi Will, can we please get McDonald’s after my appointment?”
“Sure, where’s Jay? I told him he could get out of school early since he has a free period this week.”
“He said he wanted to stay at school, so he’s probably just walking around the hallways or doing whatever Jay does” You shrugged.
You thought about it for a while, your life was somewhat falling apart. Will was leaving for New York. Jay was getting deployed so you weren’t gonna see him. And your mom was gone so all you had left was your Dad, and your dad wasn’t the best person now since your dad died.
“Hey Will?”You broke the silence
“Yeah Nugget?”
“I’m- I’m gonna miss you when you leave” Here comes the water works.
“Me too Y/n me too”
Life from now on was going to be way different for you , and everyone around you knew that. You were going to get through it and it was going to be Ok. Right?
Well that’s at least what you thought…

HALSTEAD!SISTER MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
“Y/N?”
An incredulous look crossed Jay’s face, like he couldn’t believe what he was seeing - you, standing right in front of his door.
Before you knew it, Jay was right in front of you, pulling you into his arms and lifting you off the ground as if you were a small child once again yet you couldn’t help the laugh that burst out of you. A genuine laugh that you felt hadn’t left your lips in months.
“What are you doing here?”
You gave him a look. “Seriously? We’re doing this out here? With my luggage?”
Jay smiled. “Give it here.” He took your carrier before he opened his door, pushing it open with his foot so you could step into his apartment.
Jay’s apartment was almost like how you remembered it, as if almost no time had passed since you’d gone off to study and decided to stay in Europe for some experience. You knew your brothers would have preferred for you to at least return to America but they also agreed that you needed to do what you felt was right.
But it really was nice to be home.
“Does Will know you’re back?” Jay asked, handing you a glass of water. When you didn’t answer immediately, he narrowed his eyes. “You went to his place first, didn’t you?”
You let out a small guilty laugh at his accusatory tone and shrugged. “I figured he was the one with more regulated hours. But I couldn’t find a Halstead there. He moved?”
Jay nodded. “Yeah, you know things happen.”
You nodded absentmindedly. “At least you didn’t.”
“That’s kind of the reason I didn’t.” Jay said with a smile.
You looked up. “What if our baby sister couldn’t find either of us?”
“I’m not a baby.” You shot back.
Jay let out a chortle. “You will always be a baby.” He teased gently.
Tumblr media
You didn’t let on the exact reason why you were back and although Jay knew something was a little off, he didn’t push. Instead, he called Will, with a vague phone call so that you could surprise your oldest brother as well.
“Jay, I’m coming in!” Will said, his strained voice from the other side of the door telling you that he was a little worried.
The door opened, Will freezing in the door frame for a second before a look of surprise with a happy smile. “Y/N!”
You allowed the oldest Halstead to give you a tight hug, enveloping you in his arms and you felt another wave of security as well as ease wash over you, reaffirming your decision to come home.
Jay ordered in, so the three of you could spend some quiet time together, Jay’s apartment resounding with laughter like it usually did when the three of you were together.
“How long are you back for?” Will asked, taking a sip of beer.
You shrugged. “I might be staying.”
You didn’t miss the sparkle of hope in both their eyes as they glanced at each other.
“I mean if I can crash here.” You said, a slightly cheeky tone slipping into your voice.
Jay rolled his eyes. “You can have the whole freaking apartment if you want.”
You laughed. “Yeah, I just… well I missed you and I thought it was time. But I came here with no plan so you’ll have to feed me until I find a job.”
Will smiled. “I think the ED has a spot.”
You raised an eyebrow. “As long as you promise to not breathe down my neck.”
Tumblr media
You’d taken the job.
There’d been a bit of a turnover lately and Maggie needed an experienced nurse, which was just as well. You were sure being a Halstead also helped.
“Remember what you promised me.” You said through gritted teeth on your first day.
But working at Med had turned out much better than you’d expected. Other than the fact that Will had kept his promise and tried his best to keep out of your way, the people you worked with were really great. Even the paramedics and firefighters that came in were a hoot, and you’d quickly become friendly with almost everyone.
So things seemed really good.
Until it started up again.
It had seemed mostly innocent enough, getting a few missed calls from unknown numbers while you were on shift. You’d barely put any thought into it, letting the phone ring as you moved quickly through the ED, from room to room, just another day in the ED.
The mistake you made was picking up one day after your shift.
“Hello?”
When you were met with silence, you paused and repeated the greeting. “Hello?”
Now, there was a slight crackling. You frowned, pulling your phone away from your ear to make sure the call was still connected, before you took a quick screenshot and tried one more time. When there was no response still, you disconnected the call, slipping your phone back into your pocket.
You didn’t give the call much thought, especially since there were plenty of scam calls going around and you figured this was just one of those calls.
But the calls didn’t stop and you’d even asked Jay if there was anything that could be done but the numbers kept changing and based on what Jay could do at this point of time, considering there was no apparent threat, it didn’t lead to anything much.
Of course, you’d kept the frequency of the calls from Jay, which was why he wasn’t as worried as he probably should have been. You’d even kept the weird “I see you” texts from Jay since you figured it was probably some prank or a wrong number.
It only hit you one day when you were heading out of Med, alongside Will, when you thought you saw a familiar figure standing a distance away.
Your head whipped around and you felt that familiar feeling of dread, a feeling you hadn’t felt for months since you’d been back in Chicago, surrounded by friends and your brothers.
“Y/N?”
Will looked slightly concerned as he glanced over your head from where he towered over you, trying to see what had caused your reaction.
You looked back at him, before glancing over your shoulder again, where there was no one.
Maybe you were just imagining things. Maybe it was just one of those empty deja vu feelings.
You shook your head at Will with a smile. “I just thought I saw…”
Will looked like he was waiting for you to finish your sentence but you shook your head with a smile. “Come on, let’s go. Jay’s gonna complain if we’re late again.”
Will looked slightly unconvinced but smiled. “I bet he’s not even there yet.”
You didn’t respond, pulling your brother to his car, once again unaware of the pair of eyes that were watching you from afar.
Tumblr media
Jay glanced up at the clock with a sigh. The bullpen was already empty and he’d wanted to be home slightly earlier today so he could have a meal with you. But looking at the time, you’d probably be at least half asleep by the time he got home.
His phone buzzed just as he pushed his chair back, stretching as he did. With a small smile, he leaned over to answer the call on speaker, sure you were just going to whine over the phone about him being late and probably asking for some late night snack.
“I’m leaving, I swear. What can I get you?” Jay spoke with an amused smile, grabbing his jacket.
But the words that bounced back at him made him freeze in his tracks.
“What are you doing here?”
Your voice shook slightly with an emotion that sounded a lot like fear.
Jay frowned, quickly shrugging on his jacket, grabbing his phone and rushing down the steps. He couldn’t hear much of what the other person was saying, so he just pushed himself faster, speeding past the front desk his phone still pressed against his ear, barely hearing Trudy’s “Where’s the fire, Halstead?” comment before he was out the doors.
What was at most a 15 minute drive felt like forever, as Jay sped through the streets, finally pulling up outside his apartment building, not even bothering to wait for the elevator.
The door to his apartment wasn’t even shut properly, the door merely resting on the frame. Jay pulled his gun out as he’d done so many times at other places, except that he could feel the bad feeling turn his stomach over.
Jay nudged the door open with his foot, pulling his focus forward and using trained eyes to glance around his apartment.
Stuff was strewn all over the floor, pieces of broken glass from a shattered cup, leaflets spread across the floor. He knew what he was seeing - a struggle. Most definitely.
“Y/N?” He called, even though he knew it was useless. This wasn’t a random robbery or attack. You’d known the person who’d come in. You had been the target.
Even so, Jay cleared each and every corner and room, before he called Will to get him to come over before he called Voight.
It was only after he’d finished calling everyone he needed to call that the information he’d already known finally clicked into place, settling into a dark place in his chest.
Someone had taken you.
Tumblr media
Jay could hear people talking but he wasn’t processing anything, his mind trying to sift through the few months since you’d been back, trying to figure out what it was that he’d missed or what you hadn’t told them.
“Jay.”
Kim touched his elbow gently and he glanced up now, realizing he was supposed to provide some sort of response.
“What?”
Kim exhaled gently before she repeated herself. “Adam’s taking Will’s statement. I’ll try to make this quick, alright?”
“I’m working this.” Jay responded, looking Kim straight in the eye.
Kim nodded. “I don’t think Voight’s taking you off. Just talk to me, so we can work this together. That’s the fastest way we’ve got to find her. Because we will.”
Jay exhaled before he nodded, letting Kim ask the questions, swallowing down the annoyance of feeling like a victim’s family.
“She didn’t tell us anything. But she was jumpy, everytime her phone rang. She stuck a little close to us when we were out, even at Molly’s, as if she was five all over again. Damn it, I should have wrangled it out of her.”
Kim glanced up at her friend. “Jay, let’s focus, alright?” She paused and he nodded. “So she didn’t say anything?”
Jay shook his head. “She didn’t even really tell us why she was back. I bought the whole ‘new environment’ excuse for a bit, but things were a little different.”
Kim nodded. “Okay, tell me about the phone call.”
Jay exhaled slowly. “She knew this guy, I’m sure of it. But I couldn’t make out what he was saying…”
Jay looked back almost helplessly at his friend and Kim nodded. “Listen, we’ll find her.”
Jay nodded again, glancing back at the bullpen now where Will had just emerged from Voight’s office. He turned to glance at Kim again. “Let’s do this.”
Tumblr media
You glanced up now, feeling the defiance in you rise to almost the same level as your fear, the figure pacing in front of you now a familiar one. Your hands were fastened securely behind your back, the cable ties so tight they were cutting into your skin.
This was the reason you felt the need to return home standing right in front of you.
“You followed me here?” You asked, doing your best to keep your voice steady, not to betray even a sliver of the actual fear that you felt.
You were pretty sure that your frantic call to Jay had gone through, even though your phone was now probably still stuffed in the corner of the couch, where you hoped Jay or someone would find it. Which gave you a sliver of hope that was only present because of the fact that you’d returned home. At least you were in Chicago. Jay and Will would find you. You just needed to hang on until then.
“You wanted me to find you.”
You exhaled slowly, not really succeeding in blocking out his voice, the memory of the first time you’d met Tobias Mills still clear in your mind.
He’d come in after an accident in a lot of pain, so you’d done what you did best. As you assisted the doctor on call in the ED, you connected with the patient. Except that this time, it had backfired. Mills had become totally obsessed with you, so much so that you’d been forced to get a restraining order. But even that hadn’t stopped him. He’d watch you from across the street, or send you messages. To this day, you still had no idea how he’d even gotten your number. So as a last resort, before you lost your last shred of sanity, you’d left, packing your bags almost overnight and taking the first available flight straight to Chicago.
But now he was here.
What was worse was that he’d somehow managed to follow you all the way to Jay’s apartment, picked a night Jay was late and practically taken you by force.
“I should have known.” He muttered as he paced in front of you, as if he’d forgotten you were there. “This was why you turned me down. But two of them?”
His voice raised at the last question and he looked furiously at you.
“Two?!”
You flinched, even though you were trying hard not to. Even so, your brain was already putting all the pieces together. He’d stalked you, seen you with your brothers and put everything together into his own narrative. Again.
Tumblr media
Jay put down the phone a little harder than he’d meant to, but the rest of the bullpen barely flinched, like they hadn’t heard it, the sound of furious typing and vague telephone conversations not pausing.
Jay could feel his anxiety mounting as each second ticked past but he glanced towards the pantry where Will was sitting, looking down at his hands and reminded himself that at least he was able to do something and that the both of you were counting on him.
He closed his eyes for just a second, even though he knew Kim had looked up and was watching him now.
There was something missing and he knew it. There was something he was not seeing and he just needed one piece to put it all together. At least that’s how he felt.
With not much to go on, seeing as they weren’t able to find much prints, the team had tried to backtrace your steps but even finding your phone was futile because the burner phones were practically untraceable. After exhausting all possibilities in Chicago, Jay was pretty sure it was something that had followed you home from Europe. Or someone. So Intelligence had put in more efforts to try to connect with the contacts you had had there.
But there was still nothing. Jay had no idea why someone had taken you, what they wanted. He couldn’t think of anyone who wanted to hurt you, but if it was someone who wanted to hurt him, there would have been a ransom call, a message, something. The silence, the lack of knowledge, it was killing him.
Jay heard the door click open, Will motioning towards him with a flick of his head. Sighing, he pushed back his chair, knowing that nothing good would come out of going to his brother with little to no answers.
“Jay, you have to tell me something.” Will said, before the door was even fully closed. “I’m climbing the walls here.”
Jay exhaled, before he looked up at his brother. “We don’t have a lot to go on.”
There was a pause before Will spoke again. “You’re telling me you have nothing.”
Jay didn’t answer.
“Jay, you have nothing? Nothing that could help us find her? She’s out there, somewhere, scared out of her mind and there’s nothing?”
Jay couldn’t even blame Will for raising his voice. Frustration, that was all the emotion behind Will’s voice, frustration that Jay himself couldn’t even express since he was in no position to at this moment. He couldn’t, he had to focus.
Jay exhaled gently. “We’re working on it, Will.”
Will knew that, he’d just let his frustration get the better of him. He hadn’t meant to make Jay feel worse but just as he opened his mouth to tell his younger brother so, the door opened.
“Jay. I think you need to take this call.”
Without another word, Jay gave his brother a look before he headed back for the bullpen and Kim led the conversation. “Hey, Stacie. It’s Kim. Can you repeat what you just told me?”
Jay listened with quiet building anger as the girl on the line talked, explaining that she had been your roommate and had also worked alongside you at the hospital. Then she talked about the patient who’d come in and formed an unhealthy attachment to you, how he waited in front of the apartment building, how he came to the hospital, but she didn’t have a conclusion for the team.
“I don’t know what happened after that. I tried to convince her to continue staying with me so that I could look out for her but she said she didn’t want to create trouble for me. She was worried that he’d do something to me too, so…”
Kim’s eyes flicked to where Jay was gripping the edge of the table so hard, his knuckles were turning white. That sounded just like you, and that really tore at Jay. He didn’t know why you didn’t tell him, or Will. Why didn’t you call to say you were having a tough time, or tell them when you’d come home?
But Jay spoke anyway, keeping his voice so steady, a stranger wouldn’t have realized they were talking about his sister. “Do you have a name?”
Tumblr media
Tobias Mills.
Jay was now staring at the records that they’d barely managed to wrangle out of the European authorities.
Stalking. Threatening behavior. But nothing that could get him convicted.
“I got him.” Adam broke the silence, finally looking up from where he had been studying the airport footage for almost an hour.
“Facial recognition missed him because of what he’s wearing but I’m pretty sure that’s him. Right?” Adam asked, playing the footage again.
Jay gave a grunt of acknowledgement before he studied the footage playing. Tobias had reached Chicago slightly two weeks after you had and someone had met him at the airport.
“I’m on it.” Kim said, before anyone else could say anything, already running facial recognition on Mills’ acquaintance as the rest of the video played out.
Ben Mason.
Facial recognition popped quickly with a record that didn’t make Jay feel any better. Multiple counts of assault, misconduct, illegal firearm possession, the list went on.
“The money trail. Mills must have paid him for his help.” Kevin said quietly, glancing at Jay.
Jay growled, the worry blooming in his chest. What exactly had Mills paid for?
But thankfully he didn’t have much longer to blindly worry. “Mason’s uncle owned a factory that’s now out of business. As far as we can tell, it’s been abandoned for at least a year. It’s under his mother’s maiden name so…”
Kevin didn’t finish his sentence before Voight nodded. “Gear up.”
Tumblr media
You could feel your heart pumping in your chest, feel the adrenaline working through your veins as you now lay on your side, unsure where the pain was coming from, other than the cable ties cutting into your skin. Maybe the roots of your hair were still smarting from when he’d pulled your head back roughly to look at him, or maybe it was when he’d raised his leg to kick you in the chest in his frustration, making your entire body topple backwards. Or maybe it was just the ache from having your arms pulled backwards for such a prolonged time.
“If I can’t have you, no one can.”
The words echoed in the empty area, bouncing off the walls as if to intimidate you further, even though he’d left a while ago.
Mills had been prepared. That, you knew. Maybe he’d hidden you somewhere no one else would find you. Maybe that’s why Jay hadn’t come for you yet, because you had no doubt that Jay would be here if he knew where you were.
There was a slam, which signalled his return and you felt your breath pick up. You were sure that if Jay didn’t come soon, things were going to get ugly soon. He was either going to do whatever he wanted with you or kill you in a fit of rage - you didn’t know which was worse.
You tried to breathe slower, reminding yourself you weren’t going to show him fear no matter what. You didn’t raise your head as the footsteps got closer, and you wondered what he was up to. If you didn’t know any better, the footsteps sounded… tentative.
“Y/N!”
The voice you’d been waiting for, the sound of safety you’d known your entire life and you raised your head now, slightly worried that you were imagining things.
His name felt like it was stuck in your throat, the energy suddenly sucked out of you as you felt the adrenaline drop all of a sudden.
“Oh my god.” His voice swept past you, landing on you gently, just as he reached you. You heard his knees hit the ground as he bent over you. “Are you hurt?”
You still didn’t answer him, the fog in your brain worried that it wasn’t true, that when you looked up it would be Mills again.
But the pressure on your wrists lifted as Jay sliced through the cable ties. “Are you hurt?” He asked again, pulling you up against him, his eyes scanning you up and down.
“Jay?”
Jay nodded now, a small frown forming on his face. “Yeah, it’s me. You’re okay. We’re here. Will’s right outside.”
You didn’t answer but your body now slumped against your brother’s.
Jay turned and nodded at Kevin so that he could bring Will in. Jay knew it would be better to take you outside but he was a little worried about any injuries you might have and if moving you would make things worse. You couldn’t even seem to articulate if you had any injuries.
“Jay? Y/N!” Will’s voice reached you now, as he got to his knees next to Jay, his fingers going straight to feel your pulse, peering at your pupils now.
“Y/N, does anything hurt? Look at me, Y/N.”
You raised your eyes now to meet Will’s before you shook your head, the fog finally pushing back down again. “Will.”
Will let out a breath that sounded like relief, before he nodded. “Okay, if you’re not hurt we should get you out of here first. Come on.”
Jay nodded, as Will put an arm around you as well, helping you up. Jay let Will take over as he repositioned his hold on the gun in his hand, getting to his feet as well.
But what threw a wrench in their plans was the back door opening.
Both you and Will looked up at the sound of a door opening and you saw the look on Mills’ face change, the absolute wrath that crossed his face as he saw you pressed against Will’s side. Will felt your hand close around the shirt he had on, the material crumpling in your hand. Jay pressed down his confusion that Mills had gotten past the patrol cars that were supposed to be stationed out there, raising his gun.
“I told you. You’re mine.”
His sentence was cut off by a simultaneous growl from both Jay and Will as you coiled backwards.
Will’s eyes caught the flash of metal first as Mills raised the gun in his hand.
Instinctively, Will pulled you against him and turned, as if he’d done this a thousand times. You let out a sharp inhale, confused for a moment if it was really Will who was now standing between you and Mills, before the gunshot rang out.
You could feel the fear that gripped at you so hard that it felt like it was hard to breathe. You were afraid to even turn, afraid to know if Will was hurt because of you.
“Y/N, you okay?” Will’s voice in your ear.
“Will, you…”
You felt Will shake his head. “I’m okay, are you…”
That’s when you felt the energy leave your legs, your body only supported by your oldest brother’s arms around you.
You turned but Jay stepped behind Will now to block your vision. “It’s over, let’s get you out of here.”
Tumblr media
Your brothers took you to the hospital to get checked out. But other than some bruises, pain that would last a few days and some dehydration, you weren’t badly hurt.
No one had told you much details, but you were sure that the gunshot you thought was Mills shooting Will was from Jay. And if it was between Mills and Will, you were glad Jay had shot the bastard, even if it made you feel dirty inside for even thinking it when someone had died.
You could hear Jay’s voice behind the closed door, raised as he questioned someone on the line.
“What the hell do you mean? My brother and sister could have died! Any one of my team members could have been shot!”
Will turned to look at you now, giving you a small smile. He looked like he was about to say something when the door slid open, Jay stepping in and closing the door behind him.
Your brothers exchanged a look like they’d already had a discussion among themselves without you.
So you knew they wanted to talk, wanted to ask you something. It didn’t take a genius to figure that out.
“Why didn’t you tell us?” Jay broke the silence first, unable to keep the sadness out of his voice.
You glanced up, surprised. You thought he’d be pissed, like really pissed. Maybe just slightly less than the anger he’d shown while he was on the phone outside.
When both of them didn’t say anything, you let out a short breath. “The whole point of a new environment was for me to grow up. I was supposed to grow outside the shelter the both of you had created for me since I was a baby.” You paused glancing up at them. “I didn’t want to worry you. I thought I could handle it, I didn’t think he would…”
Will moved first, heading towards your side and pulling you tightly against him before he sat on the side of your bed facing you.
“You’re our younger sister. Worrying us is part of your make up. Jay worries me all the freaking time.” Will said gently, earning him an annoyed puff from the younger Halstead.
“Yeah, says Dr Halstead who got beaten up within a day since he returned to Chicago.” Jay slightly mocked, moving closer as well.
You laughed, the chuckle bursting forth and making your side ache a little.
Jay smiled at you. “Promise me something.”
You glanced up at your older brother.
“Don’t keep such serious things from us. Once it starts feeling funky, you tell one of us. Tell Kim. Tell Sylvie. I don’t care who, just tell someone.”
You were quiet for a second, before you nodded. “I promise.”
They both leaned in at the same time, Will putting a hand on the back of our head gently as they squashed you between them, the three of you emanating the same feelings, glad that you were all here together.
Home.

~
There’s no Halstead family dinner that’s uneventful and that includes tonight. Everyone’s here at dad’s home for our weekly dinner. Will was the one who insisted on having dinners like this to spend time together after dad’s narrow escape from death in the apartment fire (and to watch dad’s diet once in a while, not that Will would admit that).
Dad’s seated at one end of the table and Will at the other end while Jay and Hailey sat at one side of the table and Alina and I sat at the other side of the table. Alina is my niece, Jay’s and Hailey’s daughter, who’s turning 8 years old in a few months.
Our plates were all loaded up with food that Will and I cooked since we’re in-charge of dinner tonight.
“The mashed potatoes are so good! I’m guessing Evie cooked it?” Jay said, in between mouthfuls of mashed potatoes. I laughed, “That’s right, big brother, and it’s mom’s recipe so can’t go wrong.”
There’s a pause of silence after I mentioned mom but that’s normal, we all miss her. Trying to cheer the moment, Hailey complimented the pasta that everybody knew Will made because it was his go-to dish to cook (and his most famous in the family). Dinner resumed and everyone made small talks with each other.
“I want to eat bread with nutella,” whined Alina and I glanced over to see that her dinner was already half-eaten. “Go and take the bread and nutella from the kitchen,” I instructed and Alina smiled cheerfully, skipping to the kitchen and back to the dining table with said items.
I helped Alina to spread the nutella on the bread and continued eating my dinner. Not even 5 minutes later, Alina called out to me, “I want more,” so I said, “You can do it yourself, Alina”. I pushed the bread and nutella to her. I was about to continue eating when dad voiced out, “Why can’t you just do it for her? She wants to eat it.”
Before I could even answer, he continued, “Sometimes, I think that you don’t like Alina. The way you treat her at times is just uncalled for.” I looked at dad, was he being serious? Was he really going to talk about this during dinner? Granted I’m not the kind of aunt who’s lovey dovey with their niece but that doesn’t mean I don’t love her. I’m rough with her because she’s like my younger sister who can tolerate and even return that treatment to me. It was like your typical sister siblings behaviour. Regardless, it was a mutual agreement that we don’t upset each other while eating and dad being dad, went straight to break it.
“Dad, Evie’s in the middle of eating, she hasn’t eaten since lunch and was busy the whole evening, besides, Alina’s old enough to spread the nutella on her own.” I heard Will saying. I felt myself shut down, which usually happens when I’m upset.
“Yeah dad, Alina can do it herself, don’t be mad,” Hailey started before turning to me and apologised, “Sorry Evie”. I shook my head and smiled (more like grimaced) at her, whispering a short “it’s okay”. Then, before Alina could reach the bread, I took it and made one for her. My eyes got teary and I knew if I talked I’d cry so I whispered to her, asking if she wanted more. Alina nodded so I made another piece for her.
I went silent the entire dinner. Having lost appetite after what happened, I ate slowly and ended up picking half of what’s left on my plate. I felt Will nudging my leg from under the table and I looked up to see the concern in his eyes. I smiled and continued picking at my food.
One by one, everybody finished their dinner and I carried my own plate together with what’s left on the dining table to the kitchen. Tonight, it was also mine and Will’s turn to clear the dishes and clean the kitchen. So while the two of us were in the kitchen, the rest were in the living room watching tv.
“I’m sorry about dad. He shouldn’t have said that, especially when we’re eating.” Will said, starting what he hoped to be a conversation that I honestly was not in the mood for. I shrugged and replied, “Whatever, not the first time and i’m sure it’s not gonna be the last. Let’s just clear all these so we can go home.” My tone giving Will no room to retort or continue the conversation. So we cleaned in silence and soon dad’s kitchen was back to its original state, clean and tidy.
‘Hey dad, I’m gonna go home first. See ya around,” I didn’t bother to wait for any replies before heading out the front door.
“Evie!” I heard Jay called out and stopped. I felt Jay approaching before he entered my line of sight. “I want to apologise for dinner, about Alina and Dad. I know you love my daughter, no doubt about that. It’s not fair for dad to say that to you, after what you’ve done for Alina ever since she was a baby. I’m not excusing him but it’s not like you don’t know him, right. Please don’t let this be our last family dinner.” Jay said.
I scoffed because yeah, I know what dad is like, but I thought he could’ve at least spared my dignity over dinner. “Don’t worry big brother, I’m not gonna disappear just because of tonight. I’ve faced worst than this, and I’m sorry too about Alina, I could’ve just prepared more than one piece of bread and no drama would occur. It's my fault too.”
Jay laughed and shook his head, “Don’t blame yourself, we’re Halstead, what’s life without drama,” he paused, then continued, “Okay, not gonna keep you here any longer than you’d want, so see ya around kiddo, and wait for Will, you live with him,” Jay ruffled my hair and went back in. Seconds after, Will was rushing out of the house.
“You’re so impatient, lil sis, left me high and dry in there to explain to dad why we’re rushing back home,” I heard Will and rolled my eyes. As Will turned the car engine on, he looked at me and said, “Dad said he’s sorry for what he said just now,”
I nodded. I looked at the house dad stayed and thought about the people inside and knew that I wouldn’t change this family for anything, even with the baggage it comes with.
“Okay.”

Hi,stranger
Tumblr media
Connor Rhodes x Halstead!sister reader
So I had this idea in my head for a bit  let's see how it goes I apologize in advance for my English, I hope I can spend more time on it and improve
Coming back to Chicago was quite easy, starting a new job right away  it allowed me to create a new routine and I also met new people and I started making new friends too, even if the hardest part was seeing my brother again after years of complete silence.
It was also difficult because the last time we saw each other we were kids you can say while now we are adults, but it didn't take us much to get back on track, moreover Jay and I have always been too similar.
Six months ago I started my new job as a nurse in the Gaffney ER, last month Will was back in town too and for the first time in years we are all together and we even get along, hopefully it will last a long time.
Today seemed like any other day we were all ready for the inauguration of the new department when the party was interrupted by a train accident, a disaster.
From the moment the first patient arrived we didn't stop even for a moment now it's night my shift ended hours ago, but the situation has calmed down only now.
I'm in the locker room while I change to go home I think of the new doctor who arrived in a rather daring way today, I thought I had left him in the past but here he is and it seems that we should work together starting today. However, I decide to leave these thoughts aside and go home, I'm exhausted.
I'm in the hospital parking lot when I hear someone call my name, I turn around and there he is Connor Rhodes...
"hey"
"hi stranger" I thought I'd sleep on it before meeting him again but here we are
" how are you?" connor asks and smiles at me and i will never admit it out loud but i missed him
"tired, I can confirm that this doesn't happen every day, definitely a first day to remember right?"
“Definitely not what I expected, I didn't expect to see you, how's it going in Chicago? and your brothers?”
"well I must say I missed home and my brothers you should have already met one"
"well of course Dr. Halstead of course, luckily you don't look alike" he smiles at me
After a while we say goodbye and part ways once at home I head to the shower to wash away the day before watching an episode of 2 broke girls with my beloved ramen.

Learning
Today in school I learned how to take vital signs and decided to make this cute little one shot where Halstead Sister practices on Jay.
"okay, so I'm just going to first try to find your pulse on your brachial artery" you said while setting down your stethoscope and blood pressure cuff. You had just come back from class and coincidentally both your brothers were home and you had convinced Jay to allow you to take a set of vitals on him for practice.
Jay extended his arm and your began palpating the area, above, below, and around on either side of his upper arm trying to feel his pulse. Every time you looked up to try and focus on feeling if there was a pulse, you watched as your brother's face scrunched with confusion. After about 2 minutes of not locating the pulse, you exclaimed, "huh, I can't seem to find it. Like it'll jump and then I won't be able to feel it" "Y/N, he's a living breathing person, you must be able to feel it. Try moving his bicep muscle" called Will, who was starting a pot of water for pasta. "Oh, that's a good idea" you stated while pushing Jay's muscle out of the way and trying to feel for it again. "Got it!" You shouted! "I guess all that working out has made that harder, hmm good to know" Jay noted while allowing you to wrap the blood pressure cuff on his arm. Rolling your eyes, you began inflating the cuff, "Let me know if I'm hurting you" you said while watching for the systolic number. Slowly you began to deflate the cuff while trying to find the diastolic and once it was fully deflated you began writing down your findings on your "Vitals Sheet" "So, what's the verdict doc? High blood pressure or low blood pressure?" joked Jay while ripping the cuff off his arm and placing it on the table. "I got 130/80, so not the best but not bad either." "Sounds good to me" shrugged Jay. "Are you going to practice gathering any other vital signs Y/N/N or are you done?" asked Will while adding spaghetti to the bowling water. "hmm, could I try getting your heart rate manually? I was about to get a reading of that on myself in class today, but then I got called into the hallway to practice lifting the stretcher with the heavy dummy on it" "Sure, why not" shrugged Jay while handing over his arm. Grabbing the pulse near the side of his wrist near his thumb, you looked at your watch and began counting. "uh, Will, I got 26" Dropping the spoon and turning off the stove, Will ran over, "Move out of the way" As you moved, Jay looked at Will with concern written on his face, "why did you run over here so fast?" "Our sister has pained me long enough, I'm going to show her how the professionals do it!" Will stated while swiftly grabbing his brother's wrist. He located the pulse in no time flat, checking his watch, he counted. "43, which if we multiplied by 2, which we are supposed to do, would equal out to 86" "Which is? Good or bad Will?" probed Jay. "Y/N, care to answer?" nudged Will while looking at you. "In normal range!" you mumbled. It wasn't your fault you weren't fast at this or even good at locating a pulse on someone else. The only practice of locating a pulse you've had before this was on yourself and some times at night when you couldn't sleep so you would feel for your wrist pulse to help lull you to sleep. "Good job, now I think you've had enough practice for one day" concluded Will while getting up to tend to the pasta. As you went to clean up your supplied, Jay nudged you. When you turned to face him, he stated, "Hey, you're learning still. It takes time to get as fast as Will. But the fact that you're trying and willing to make mistakes shows you are going to be a great EMT"

I Can’t Believe You (A Halstead Brothers + Halstead Sister imagine)
A/N: I've had this idea for awhile and then an anon on asked me about Beary so I figured I'd write this (Note: This is not part of the Seasons of PD/Med universe, I just wanted Beary to be in it. It is a total separate imagine from that series).
Anyways, enjoy!
"You're both leaving for an undercover assignment?" you asked Jay for the second time today.
"Yes, I already told you, Y/N," Jay said as he worked on packing his bag. "Voight needed it to look like we were a married couple, and since Hailey and I are already married, he thought it would work perfectly."
"Don't tell me I have to--"
"I already called Will. I'll bring you over to his place tonight at eight."
"Why?" you whined. "Jay, I'm eighteen. I can handle myself just fine."
"Y/N, this op could go on for weeks. So that means, bad guys have more time to figure out who I really am. And if they figure that out, I don't need you being here by yourself."
"But Will doesn't even own a gun!" you argued.
"Uh, yes he does," Jay said and you cocked an eyebrow. "If you two had bothered to talk for the past year and a half, you'd know he owns one and knows how to shoot it."
"It's his fault with all of this. I told him the truth."
"Yeah, well, we didn't find any evidence to back either of your claims, so you guys have a bit of time to work this out."
"You really can't just have patrol sit on the apartment?" you asked desperately.
"No. I can't have them sit outside our apartment building for who knows how long. You're staying with Will. End of discussion. Now, go pack a bag."
"Seriously?"
"Yes. Now go."
"Jay," you whined. "I'm eighteen and it's the summer before college. I'm gonna spend it all being babysat?"
Jay laughed. "Not all of it. A couple weeks max."
"A couple weeks too many," you muttered as you walked away and to your room.
You and Will had never been super close siblings, but you had been closer before everything popped off a year and a half ago.
You had just turned sixteen a couple of months ago and relished your newfound freedom. And now, it was the holidays, which typically meant that Jay took a bit of furlough and Will came back from New York to spend time with the two of you. Jay's new girlfriend, Hailey, might also spend Christmas Eve with you three. You didn't mind; you really liked her. Plus, it was nice having a girl around for a change.
You were sitting at home watching a movie with your friend, Megan, when there was a knock on the door.
Jay had always told you to either look out the peephole or not answer the door at all when you were home alone. He always told you that he made a lot of enemies with the job he did, and he didn't want you hurt because of it. You were just about to get up and look out the peephole when your phone rang.
It was Will.
"Hello?" you asked.
"You mind opening the door for me? I look like I'm homeless standing outside your apartment with a suitcase."
You laughed. "Yup. I'm coming."
The minute he came inside, he gave you a bone-crushing hug. "Ugh, I missed you."
"Missed you, too," you replied as you pulled away. "But can we not do all this here? I have a friend over."
"Aww, I'm embarrassing you. That's a rite of passage for us," Will joked and then messed with your hair.
"Stop it," you said and moved away from him.
Megan laughed. "Hey, I think it's cool that you have older brothers who are nice to you. I only have an annoying little sister. I wish I had big brothers."
"No, you don't. Any mention of boys around them sends them both into lecture mode."
"Well, I guess I'll go unpack and leave the two of you girls alone," he said and left the room.
What he didn't realize was that he had left his medical bag on the kitchen table in plain sight.
***
"What do you even keep in here anyway?" you asked curiously and pointed to Will's medical bag, a few hours later when Megan had left and Jay was home.
"Stuff that Jay might need because he's injury prone."
"Haha, very funny." Jay rolled his eyes. Then, he moved and started opening the medical bag.
"Hey!" Will yelled. "That's for doctors only."
"And if I'm gonna be the patient, I have a right to know what you're using on me."
Then, Jay started rummaging through the bag, but Will quickly pulled it away from him. "Fine, if you two are that nosy and want to know, then I'll just tell  you."
He told you what was in there and then you thought he was finished, but instead, he furrowed his eyebrows and started frantically rummaging through the bag.
"Forget something?" Jay asked.
"Yeah, I can't find the Norco I put in here."
"Isn't that the stuff they gave me when I got my wisdom teeth out?" you asked. "That stuff just made me tired all the time."
"Yeah," Will said. "And I swore I grabbed some--and went through the entire process of getting it--but it's not here."
"Maybe you just left it at home?" Jay suggested.
"No. This is a controlled substance, Jay. I know I had it." Will's eyes locked on yours. If he had left it in the kitchen while he was unpacking, then you could've taken it. "Y/N, did you open my medical bag while I was unpacking?"
"What? No!" you exclaimed. "If you're saying that I took the meds, then you're wrong. You seriously came back in here after being away and just blame me for something going missing, seriously?"
"Nobody's blaming anybody," Jay said quickly. "It was just a question."
"Yeah, well, it sounded like he was blaming me," you muttered.
"Maybe I am," Will shot back.
"Guys," Jay said. "Just hang on a sec. There's no way Y/N stole the meds."
"You weren't even home, Jay! So how would you know?"
In the end, Will left to go back to New York a few days later because he was convinced that you had stolen the meds. Jay even tossed your room because he had been siding with Will. But, really, Jay had no idea who to believe because he hadn't found them, so you were neither guilty nor innocent.
But, when winter break was over, you caught Megan selling them at school. You thought about telling Jay but didn't want to wreck her life this early, so you kept quiet and just stopped being friends with her. You thought about calling Will and explaining the situation, but you knew he'd just tell Jay. So, you kept quiet. And by doing so, you lost your entire relationship with your oldest brother.
"You all packed?" Jay asked after he knocked on your bedroom door.
"Yup. I'm coming." You quickly grabbed your favorite blanket and your pillow and then stuffed your Build-A-Bear, Beary, into your pillowcase, and then stuffed your pillow into your bag.
You had had that bear for as long as you could remember and couldn't sleep without it. Even though you were old enough now that you didn't need to cuddle him up to your chest to fall asleep, you still wanted him within arm's reach. For example, whenever you went to friends' houses to stay the night in high school, you'd shove Beary in your pillow case and then you'd sleep with your hand in the pillowcase to hold his paw or you'd slip him out of your pillow once everyone was asleep and have him next to you, but covered with your sleeping bag so no else could see.
Jay of course knew that you still slept with Beary, and by default, so did Hailey.
"Got everything?" Jay asked when you left your room.
"Yeah. Toiletries are in the duffle bag, too."
"Beary?" he asked. "I don't want you coming back here when both me and Hailey are under."
"In my pillowcase," you answered.
"Still in the same pajamas he's always in?" Jay smirked.
You whacked him on the chest. "Yes. You know as well as I do that all my old Build-A-Bear stuff is in our storage unit."
"Just checking. C'mon. Let's get outta here. Hailey's already waiting for me at the district."
He grabbed your blanket for you and slung his own black duffle bag over his shoulder while you did the same with yours and carried your pillow in your hands.
Time to go see Will and talk to him for the first time in a year and a half.
This was definitely going to be interesting.
***
"Hey, man," Jay said when Will opened the door, and then you and Jay walked into his house. "Thanks for doing this."
"No problem. Well, I mean it was a bit of a problem given--" Jay gave Will a look that made Will shut his mouth immediately. Will cleared his throat. "You wanna stay for pizza?"
"No, I gotta go. But, if you or Y/N need anything, call Adam or Kim. They'll be able to tell Voight to get in contact with me. Y/N has all their numbers."
"Got it," Will said.
You just stood awkwardly in the entryway and watched the exchange with your duffle slung over your shoulder.
"Anyway, I gotta go," Jay said. "Be good," he told you.
You laughed. "Jay, I'm not a little kid anymore."
"Yeah? Well, you're still younger than me, so you know what that makes you? A little kid."
You rolled your eyes and then he pulled you in for a hug.
"Be safe," you told him as tears pricked your eyes. "I can't lose you, too."
Jay smiled sadly. "Always am. You don't need to worry about me. I've got the best team in Chicago watching my six."
And then he went and gave Will a hug and he left, leaving you and your brother who you hadn't talked to in a year and a half alone.
"So," Will started, "I, uh, ordered pizza if you're hungry."
You were a little hungry. "Okay."
***
Dinner went well...as well as it could have gone considering the circumstances. The two of you didn't really talk much. He asked you about school and where you planned to go to college in the summer and you told him CCU, but also assumed that Jay had already told him that you planned on going to CCU anyway. You asked him how work was and he said it was fine. You asked him if he saw any interesting cases lately and he said that he couldn't get into a lot of them because of HIPAA regulations.
Then, you put your plate in the dishwasher and he showed you to the guest bedroom, which was where you'd be staying for the next week or however long Jay was undercover. At least there was a tv in here and a lock on the door. So, you could always hide in here if you needed to get away from Will for a while.
You sighed and opened your duffle bag to grab your pajamas, headphones, and phone charger. Only, the first thing that you saw on top was a pair of jeans, which were definitely too big for you. Okay, so maybe Jay accidentally threw his jeans in your duffle by accident. They were identical black duffle bags after all.
So, you started digging through the bag.
When you got to the bottom, that was when you began to panic.
It's not like you couldn't have Adam or Kim come with you to your apartment to help you get clothes and you could always buy a new phone charger and a cheap pair of headphones that would last you the few weeks you were here. No, the problem was that Beary had been in your duffle bag.
And, he wasn't in this one.
You don't think a day had gone by since you were the age of two that you didn't sleep with that Build-A-Bear. And, you'd be damned if you started now.
Jay had only left an hour ago, so maybe he was still reachable.
You pulled out your phone and quickly dialed Jay's number. No answer. You tried again. No answer. You tried one final time. No answer.
This time though, you decided to leave a voicemail. "Call me. It's an emergency."
You flopped onto the bed and ended the call. You sighed in frustration as tears pricked your eyes.
There was a knock on your door, which caused you to bolt upright.
"What's an emergency?" Will asked from the hallway.
"Uh, nothing! Everything's fine!" you yelled back quickly.
"Doesn't sound fine," Will said and then he paused. "I'm coming in. Are you decent?"
"Yeah," you answered and then sat back down on the bed and crossed your arms over your chest.
"What's going on?" Will asked when he entered and saw your sour expression.
"Nothing," you lied again.
"Didn't sound like nothing."
"I'm not lying to you!" Will threw his hands up in a sign of surrender. "Plus, you'd think it's stupid anyway."
"Contrary to popular belief, I am trying here or else I wouldn't have you staying here. Sure, you're not the easiest person to get along with because of everything that went down, but I can still be decent with you."
You sighed. Maybe he was being truthful. Maybe you should tell him what's going on. After all, you weren't going to call Kim or Adam for this. So really, Will was your only hope.
"I accidentally grabbed Jay's bag instead of mine and...um...Beary's in there and I can't sleep without him," you finally admitted.
Will stared at you for a few seconds and you could've sworn he was going to burst out laughing and tell you to grow the fuck up. Instead, he surprised you by sitting down next to you on the bed.
"I can help you...if you want."
You looked at him and cocked an eyebrow. Who was this guy and what has he done with your brother? "Really?"
"Yeah. After everything between us, we're still family." You started to say thank you, but he quickly cut you off. "This doesn't mean that we're good. It just means that I'm helping you so that you'll be able to get some sleep while you're here."
"Noted."
"We'll check the apartment first. C'mon."
***
"Jay told me not to come here without a cop, so Adam or Kim," you told him as the two of you entered the apartment.
"And you didn't tell me this before, because...?" Will asked.
"Because I knew you wouldn't let me come here if I told you that."
"No, I'd just make you call Kim or Adam so that they could meet us here."
"Well, I don't need them knowing I sleep with a teddy bear."
"Aww, you're embarrassed."
"Shut up. Last I checked, we're not friends, just family."
"Ouch. I never said that."
"Yeah, well you implied it. Now, are you gonna help me look, or are you just gonna stand there?"
"Where do you want me to look?" Will asked.
"Kitchen, living room area. I'm gonna check my room. But, I could've sworn I put him in my bag when I was packing."
Then, you walked off to your bedroom.
First, you looked at your bed and even patted down your pillows. You knew you had shoved him into your pillowcase, but maybe he fell out.
Nothing.
Then you looked around your bed on the floor and even under your bed.
Nothing.
You checked everywhere in your bedroom and in your closet. You checked under clothes on the floor and even in your hamper.
Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
You sat on your bed and put your head in your hands.
He was gone. If he wasn't in your room, you highly doubted he'd be in the kitchen or the living room or anywhere else that Will was looking.
You assumed at this point, that your comfort item was with Jay since he had probably had your bag.
Then you had a thought: What if you never saw Beary again?
After all, Jay was undercover. Anything could happen.
"No," you muttered as tears slowly started to roll down your face. "No."
You and your mom had gone together to get that bear. And now, you might lose the last piece of your mom.
That was what finally broke you. Your body began to rack with sobs as you had that thought.
"I couldn't find him-- whoa. You good?" Will asked as he walked into your room.
You looked up with a glare. "Do I look like I'm fucking good, Will? Of course, I'm not good!"
"What's your problem? I'm trying to help you here!"
At this, you shot up and off your bed and got right up close to Will. "No, Jay made you watch me! I know you didn't choose to do this! You didn't even come to my fucking graduation or see me on my birthdays or send a birthday card! The only reason I saw you on Christmas is because you came to see Jay! I know you blame me for losing your job in New York. You fucking hate me, Will! Just admit it."
Without waiting for Will to respond, you marched out of your room and into the bathroom, slamming the door and quickly locking it.
You remembered the last time you had hope of Will showing up for something. It was a few months ago, at your high school graduation.
Anything from Will? you had texted Jay as you sat in a chair in your high school gym in your cap and gown. You had scanned the crowd where Jay, Hailey, Adam, Kim, Kelly, and Stella were sitting at least ten times by now.
Nothing yet, Jay replied. Then, he sent another text. I'm really sorry Y/N. I've reminded him almost every day for a month.
It's okay, you replied and took a deep breath to keep your tears at bay. You were supposed to cry after your graduation, not before. Then you sent another text. I'm used to it.
Up in the bleachers, this text broke Jay's heart. He knew the two of you had your history, but he never thought it would've gone on for this long.
Unbeknownst to you, Jay had been watching for signs that you were using or dealing after Will had accused you of stealing his Norco. And, he hadn't seen anything. But, he also didn't know anything about this Megan girl because you stopped hanging out with her after she had been at your apartment when the meds went missing. So, he was 95% sure that you didn't steal them, but since he couldn't be 100% sure, he didn't mention anything to Will. He knew that it was your and Will's issue to work out. But, he never thought that Will would hold a grudge against his own sister for this long.
Sure, he had missed things such as your seventeenth and eighteenth birthdays, but that was only because he had been working...at least, that's what Jay had told you. On your seventeenth, he was still in New York, so you had at least expected a card, but one never came. So, when he was back in Chicago for your eightieth birthday, there was a small part of you that hoped for a birthday card, but a large part of you that knew that you wouldn't get one. The larger part of you was right.
But, today was different. It was the culmination of years of late nights and crying over math homework and stupid teachers and projects and exams. You thought Will would at least show up to this since it was his regular day off during the week, a Wednesday, but he wouldn't even do that.
***
"Where do you want to go out to eat, kiddo?" Jay asked after you had gotten pictures with Jay and the rest of the people who had come to see you graduate.
"Can we just go home?" you asked desperately as you tried your hardest to hold back tears. "Please?" Your voice cracked on the last word, giving you away.
Jay smiled sadly. "If that's what you want to do, then we can do that."
"I'm gonna go to the bathroom," you said quickly and then started walking away. You didn't want to cry in front of everyone.
Once in the bathroom, you leaned your head against the bathroom door and let the tears fall. How could you have been so stupid to think that Will would've actually shown up? You should've known he wouldn't come. He still hated you.
You had heard him on the phone with Jay one time saying that he got written up for not having documentation of what patient that Norco went to and what it was administered for. And then, a month later, Will got fired. So, in Will's mind, you had gotten him fired from his job as a plastic surgeon in New York.
"Y/N?"
It was Hailey.
You sniffled. "In- In here," you told her. Then, you unlocked the bathroom stall and stepped out. "Sorry." You frantically began wiping your tears, not even caring about your makeup being messed up at this point.
"No, honey," Hailey said quickly. You don't have anything to be sorry about," she told you.
At that, you almost broke. "I don't- I don't want anyone to see me like- like this," you cried as quietly as you could, but loud enough so that Hailey could still hear you.
"Don't worry. Stella's guarding the door. She even has her CFD badge with her so people believe her when she says a pipe burst and no one can come in here."
"I know- I know I shouldn't care because he doesn't, but I wanted him here. Will should've been here!" you wailed.
"I know, I know," Hailey soothed and then quickly gave you a hug. "I know."
"Mom and Dad aren't- aren't here. Will's not here. I barely have any- have any family left."
"I know it's not the same, but you'll always have people there for you. Me, Kim, Adam, Kelly, Stella, Matt, and everyone else at 51, and Med has your back."
"But why do I still hope that he'll change, Hailey?" you asked. "Why do I keep thinking he'll finally show up?"
Hailey sighed. She knew this feeling far too well. "Until you finally decide in your head and your heart that it's time to let go, then you'll never stop hoping. And then one day, you finally realize that they won't be in your life and you make peace with it. It took me years, Y/N. Years. And, it's okay to have hope that Will will come back into your life; you just have to be realistic about it."
You didn't know what to say to that, so you stood there and hugged her.
"You ready to go back out there? I'm sure if you wanted some takeout Jay wouldn't have a problem getting it."
"And ice cream?" you asked and looked up at her.
"I'm sure I could convince him to stop for ice cream on the way home, too."
"Did I hear something about ice cream?" Stella asked three minutes later when you had wiped your tears and blotted your face with a piece of wet paper towel...which didn't do much, but it had been worth a shot. "Because, if so, I'm ditching Kelly and coming home with you guys."
And that was how you ended the night, instead of dinner, you and everyone who had come to your graduation went out for ice cream. And, on the way home when it was just you, Hailey, and Jay, you stopped at Wendy's to get an actual dinner.
You still wished that Will had been there, though.
"Y/N?" Will asked as he knocked on the door. "You in there?"
"Where else would I be, huh?" you yelled back.
"I dunno, you could've climbed out a window or something and scaled the drainpipe. It's dangerous, but I wouldn't put it past a Halstead. Anyway, I'm sorry."
"Ha. Yeah right."
"No, really I am. I just- can you just let me in?"
You sighed and reluctantly stood up and unlocked the door. "What?"
"I thought you could use some space."
"No, really? Why would you think that? And, if you thought that so much, then why are you bugging me?"
"Listen, you have every right to be upset."
"About you or about Beary?" you asked and cocked an eyebrow and put a hand on your hip, a tactic you had learned from Hailey when she'd ask Jay a question that she knew that he knew she already knew the answer to.
Will sighed and pushed past you into the bathroom, which left you with a frustrated expression on your face. He turned to face you and then you hopped up on the counter and sat there. You crossed your arms over your chest. What could he possibly say that would fix things?
"About me," Will finally answered your previous question. "You didn't deserve to be treated like that. I should've let you explain yourself."
"I tried, Will. I really fucking tried to explain! Hell, I even saw her selling them at school the day we got back from Christmas break!"
At this, Will's facial expression changed from one of forgiveness to one of shock. "What? Did you tell Jay?"
"Of course, I didn't tell Jay!" you snapped. "You would've known about it if I had told him right when it happened, wouldn't you?" You paused. "Sorry."
"No, no, it's okay. I, uh, I probably actually deserve that. All this and the stuff you said to me earlier, I mean. I haven't been the best big brother. I know that."
"The first step is admitting you have a problem."
At this, Will cracked a smile. "You've been spending way too much time at the district, haven't you?"
"Probably."
You thought that the two of you were good enough at this point, maybe not close, more like acquaintances, so you started to walk out of the bathroom.
"Y/N, wait," Will called to your retreating back.
"What?"
"There's something else I need to tell you."
You made your way back into the bathroom so that you were standing directly in front of him. "Which is...?"
He pushed himself onto the counter and then sat there. "You didn't get me fired. Sure, the missing documentation for why the meds were used, did give me a write-up, but I wasn't fired because of it."
"So, it wasn't because of me?" you asked. You needed confirmation on this. You had believed, for a year, that it was your friend's actions—which Will thought had been your actions—that had gotten him fired.
"It wasn't because of you. I guess I pissed off the wrong person at work when I told them that they shouldn't be having more plastic surgery because it wouldn't have any benefits. And, it wasn't medically necessary." He paused and cracked a smile. "Yeah, don't say that to someone whose husband is one of the hospital's biggest donors. I only got a small write-up for not having documentation of who the Norco went to and why it was used."
At this, tears began to fill your eyes. "I thought you hated me. You made me believe that it was my fault, that everything was my fault."
"It wasn't your fault. I guess I should've sided with you in the first place. I trusted you more than I trusted this random friend of yours after all."
"I saw her," you said. "I saw her selling them at school. And- And I didn't tell Jay because I didn't want to ruin her life before she even graduated. If I just would've—"
"No, she sold them. You had nothing to with this."
At this, you stood on your tip toes and hugged Will from where he was sitting on the counter.
"Shh, shh, it's okay," he reassured. "It's okay."
"I thought- I thought I'd never talk to you again. That you'd hate me."
"Well, I don't hate you. And, we're talking right now, so I'd say that was wrong."
At this, you laughed a little. "I guess so."
"Now, I'll give you a few minutes to get cleaned up, and then we can figure out the next steps to go and find Beary."
***
"I cannot believe you're making me call Kim and tell her I still sleep with a stuffed animal," you grumbled as you scrolled through your phone to Kim's contact.
"If you don't want to find Beary, then don't call her. But, if you want to find him, calling Kim and Adam is probably our last chance."
You pressed Kim's contact and she surprisingly picked up on the second ring.
"Burgess," she said.
"Hey, Kim, it's Y/N. Is Jay still at the district with you?" you asked and tapped your foot anxiously.
"He just left about two hours ago. Why? Is everything okay?"
"Yeah, yeah, everything's fine. It's just that...Jay took my bag instead of his and um...uh..." Will rolled his two pointer fingers in the circular motion, silently telling you to wrap it up. "My Build-A-Bear that I sleep with every night is in there and I can't sleep without him. I know it's just a stuffed animal but--"
"Hey, it's a comfort item. Makayla's got her platypus, you have your bear. I'll give Jay a call. He and Hailey haven't had a ton of time yet, which means they're not in super deep with---" She caught herself before she revealed who the team was going after. "They're not in super deep with them yet, so I might be able to get a location for you guys to meet. I'll call you back within an hour."
"Okay, thanks, Kim. And, uh, can you try and not tell everyone the reason for this? Just say I grabbed the wrong bag or something?" You didn't need everyone in Intelligence knowing you slept with a stuffed animal. After all, now half the team, Jay, Hailey, and Kim knew you slept with one, you didn't need the other half knowing as well.
"Will do. I'll call you back soon."
Then, she hung up.
"Good news?" Will asked once you had put your phone back in your pocket.
"She's gonna call Jay," you told him. "She said he shouldn't be in too deep undercover yet, so he might be able to get Beary to me somehow. Said she'll call me back within an hour."
"So, what do you wanna do until then? Just go back home...as in my house?" he asked.
You shrugged.
"Or, we could go split an ice cream mountain?" he suggested.
You laughed. "You're kidding."
"I'm dead serious. C'mon, let's go get some ice cream."
***
The two of you sat at a picnic table outside your favorite ice cream shop in Canaryville. You had been coming here since before you could even remember. And, they had this thing called Ice Cream Mountain, which was three mountains of soft serve ice cream with hot fudge, caramel, Oreos, whipped cream, and cherries all served on a Frisbee.
"You want the first bite?" Will asked.
"You're offering to let me have the first bite? You and Jay always argued over the first bite."
"After everything that's happened, I think it's only fair if I give that up."
"Don't mind if I do." Then, you dug your spoon into a mound of chocolate soft serve ice cream and made sure you had as many Oreo pieces in it as your spoon could manage. "Mhhhhm."
"Good?" Will asked.
"Amazing. Your turn."
And that's how the two of you spent the next fifteen minutes: eating ice cream just like you were kids again. That was until your phone rang.
"Can you get him back?" you asked as you put your spoon down and answered the call from Kim.
"We can get it back. Jay said to meet him in the back parking lot of IHOP. The one near CCU," she answered.
"Okay, we'll be there." You quickly ended the call and then relayed the information to Will. There were only a few spoonfuls of ice cream left which you called dibs on before Will and then ate them.
Then, the two of you were off to go retrieve Beary.
***
"That's him," you told Will. "Unlock the car."
Will quickly did so and Jay looked around and then walked casually to Will's car and hopped in the backseat.
"So, how's the night been?" Jay asked.
"Why's it matter? Give me Beary," you answered quickly. "I swear to God, Jay if you don't have him--"
"Relax, I have him. I just want you to answer the question first."
"It's been good. We got ice cream," you told him. "Ice Cream Mountain."
"So, are you too good now?" Jay asked.
"I think we are," you said. "Will?"
"Yeah, we made up. I even gave her the first bite of Ice Cream Mountain."
"Good. Glad to hear it." Then, he grabbed his phone. "We're all good, guys," he said into it.
"Thank god I can go home now," you heard Adam's voice come from the other end.
Then, the door to the backseat opened again and you froze.
"It's just Hailey," Jay answered.
"You said this would take at least a week," she started. "It only took a few hours."
"Must've been an easy case then," Will said.
"Case? You didn't tell them?" Hailey asked.
"Tell us what?" you asked and looked back and forth between Hailey and Jay.
"There was no case," Jay admitted.
"What? Then why'd you do this to me?" you asked. "You made me freak out and lose Beary for nothing!"
"Technically, he wasn't lost," Jay started to explain. "A few weeks ago, I decided enough was enough between you and Will, so I talked to Hailey and then Kim and Adam and we set this up. There was no case. Me and Hailey were just gonna get a hotel until you made up. But, then I figured it might happen faster if I grabbed the wrong bag and took Beary, so that's what we did."
"You're an ass," Will laughed.
"But, it worked, didn't it?"
"I can't believe you," you stated.
"What's there not to believe?"
"That you would intentionally take Beary from me!"
Jay opened the duffle bag. "He's right here. Safe and sound." He held the open bag to you and he was right. Beary was right where you had thought you had put him in your duffle bag.
"I say we all get IHOP to celebrate," Hailey suggested.
"And that's why we were supposed to come here, too, isn't it?" Will asked.
"Yup. But, you guys just had ice cream, so we can just go home if you want," Jay answered
"Halstead movie night?" you asked.
That was where each of you picked a movie and you watched all three of them together. But, now that Hailey was a Halstead, there would be four movies to watch.
"What's a Halstead movie night?" Hailey asked.
"Of course, he didn't tell you," Will said. And then Will quickly explained what it was.
"Me and Hailey will go get the snacks and you two can go back to our apartment and start figuring out what you want to watch," Jay told you.
"Okay," you said. Then, Jay and Hailey left the car and when they were safely gone, you said, "We're leaving Jay's bag at your house. Karma."
"Deal," Will agreed and then started driving.
You never thought Beary would be what brought you and your oldest back together, but hey, crazier things have happened.

Excuses
Warnings: Mentions of fainting, diabetes, canon-typical injuries
Summary: You suffer the consequences just because your teacher thought you were making excuses.
A/N: First fic of 2024!!! I had plans that I was going to post weekly in the new year just like last year but things went downhill. This january and february has had its very good but also really bad moments and even writing this was a struggle. I've found myself in a weird place of wanting to write but struggling and all of a sudden not being able to balance my schoolwork and writing. So I took a lil step back to solely focus on my work but looking at everything now, my fic updates will be much less frequent but hopefully just as or if not, more fun to read.
I feel bad for not saying or posting anything since the new year but I'm here now and hopefully will be more alive. I've got lots planned for you beautiful people, several series and way too many fics in my drafts that I cannot wait for you all to read. This wasn't as long or as juicy as I intended but my brain completely failed me so I hope this is good enough. I initially wanted to post this at the beginning of March but I finished the final editing today so here you go!!
Final note before we start, I have general knowledge about diabetes but that's all from my grandma. I have no idea if it's the same for teenagers so I'm sorry for any mistakes. Happy reading!!
Tumblr media
Your biology teacher had been on maternity for three weeks now and you were seriously contemplating life.
Because of the crappy rules surrounding maternity leave, when your teacher refused to return before her three months ended, your school had a supply teacher fill in for her till she came back.
Since day one, you knew you hated her.
It was mid lesson and you knew as soon as you started feeling sluggish that your sugar levels were dropping. Your thoughts were only confirmed when your Dexcom receiver let you know of your decreasing glucose.
This wasn't a usual occurrence. Will and Jay always made sure you had eaten enough and you had the means to maintain the needed glucose levels so that nothing happened.
Alas, you were up late revising and you were stressing about keeping up your good grades. Jay was rushing you out the door because he needed to go to a scene he'd just been called to and Will was out walking Kol and hadn't seen you leave.
In conclusion, it'd been a hot minute since you last ate something.
The school were well aware of your diabetes. It was one of the very important things your brothers stressed them about when you first started.
Most students knew about it actually, having seen your Dexcom and not understanding since a diabetic child apparently wasn't common according to them.
So, when you randomly pulled out a snack from your bag mid class, no one questioned it and instead would make sure you were okay. There'd never been a problem before in school and everyone wanted it to stay that way.
However, this new teacher, Mrs Byrne was apparently completely unaware of your medical condition.
"Y/N. You know the rules about eating in class." She said strictly, pulling away all the attention from the board onto you.
She stopped you in the middle of opening the packet of fruit gummies. You frowned, looking at her confused along with your classmates.
"I have diabetes." You said bluntly, continuing to open the packet. "I don't eat this and I'll pass out."
Mrs Byrne only rolled her eyes, smiling at you condescendingly. "I've heard that excuse hundreds of times, give those to me."
You scoffed at the audacity, refusing to hand over what was yours.
It was when she started walking towards your desk with a pep in her step that the entire class got involved. Their raised voices overlapped, some angrier than others over what was happening.
However, you too were Stubborn alike to your brothers so you kept as firm of a grip of the packet. You turned a blind eye to the anger fuelled cover teacher. You continued to smile as she spewed threats of all sorts.
Due to your frustration and annoyance over the teacher who wanted to take your gummies away, you didn't notice how everything started change; how hard it was to move your eyes and lips, your limbs getting heavier and you thoughts slowly getting muddled up.
Lost in a daze, you were no longer able to fight back when she pulled harder, successfully snatching the small packet out of your hands. It was now that the class got furious, your friends were already up and at your side but now they were verbally attacking the teacher.
Fed up with her petty behaviour, you were going to get up and go to the nurses office who would take care of you but getting out your seat was harder said than done.
With one of your friends help, you weren't too sure who was helping you from your hazy sight that cleared when you blinked too many times.
You were wobbly on your feet, taking slow and hesitant steps towards the front of the classroom but before you could leave, you felt your legs give out and everything went black.
*****
It turned out that supposed crime scene that he was imminently needed at was nothing but a prank by a bunch of college boys resulting in a grumpy Hank putting them in cuffs and having them fined for a very reasonable reason.
That's how the rest of the unit found themselves finishing up paperwork, catching up about life in general as they debated what they were getting for lunch.
Jay was smugly sitting back, eyes flickering between Kevin and Adam who were bickering over something trivial when his phone rung, catching everyone's attention.
They were all so bored and normally when one of their phones went off during work hours, it meant something came up and they were needed.
In interest, everyone turned their heads towards Jay and waited for him to tell them they got a crime scene.
Picking up his phone, Jay's brows furrowed at the number, confused as to why your school was calling him in the middle of the day. They'd only call him if two things happened: You'd gotten in trouble or you got hurt.
"Hello. Is this Y/N Halsteads brother Jay?" A voice he couldn't recognised asked, most likely some lady from the main office.
"Yeah, that's me." Jay confirmed, sitting up in preparation for whatever he was going to be told.
"So sorry to interrupt you sir but Y/N collapsed in class." The lady said with guilt laced in her words. "Your other brother didn't pick up the phone. We called to let you know we had to call the paramedics and they've taken her to Chicago Med."
"Uh yeah." Jay said, collecting his jacket and keys. "Yes, thank you."
Not waiting for a reply, Jay hung up and quickly knocked on Hank's office door frame.
"Sarge, I gotta get Y/N-"
"Go get her. We're done here."
*****
Wanting to pull his hair out, Will rubbed his eyes in frustration, glaring at his patients scans that only confused him further. He was tired and was coming to half way through his twenty four hour shift.
"Dr Halstead- Uh, Dr Rhodes in T4." Maggie stumbled, looking down at her brick and making sure she read it correctly.
"What's wrong?" Will asked, confused as to why Maggie changed her mind which she usually never did.
"It's Y/N."
Now fully awake, Will followed Connor towards the ambulance bay where you were being rolled in. You were groggily sitting up on the stretcher, you hair a mess and a few scratches around your face and hands from when you fell.
"Sylvie, what happened?" Will asked the blonde paramedic while looking you over. He desperately wanted to check you over himself but let Connor do his thing. He really did not need Ms Goodwin on his case today.
"Teachers didn't tell us much but her classmates said she collapsed after not being able to eat." Sylvie relayed the minimal information she knew, shrugging her shoulders when the two doctors looked at her weirdly. "No one would tell us anything more."
"Y/N, it's Connor. Can you hear me kid?" Connor said while pulling out his penlight. He was like another brother to you, his concern just as high. "Can you tell me what happened?"
You groaned, mumbling nonsense with your eyes screwed closed. Your words were mostly unintelligible but Will understood them mere seconds later.
Fixing the problem you complained about, Will turned down the lights and let Connor continue fussing over you.
It didn't take long to find out the cause of your collapse, Will sighing at the news when he read the numbers from your tests.
"I thought she was always on top of her sugar levels." Connor said, closing the room door so you could sleep in peace.
And what he said was completely true but they weren't aware of why you couldn't today specifically of all days.
"She is." Will said, rubbing a hand down his face in frustration. "Maybe her dexcom malfunctioned or something."
Connor hummed, agreeing with his friend.
"Hmm, maybe."
*****
Arriving at Med, Will gave Jay a detailed rundown of everything he new about your medical state but also the events pre your hospital arrival.
Getting a good look at you, holding your hand in his and kissing you on your forehead, Jay was more than happy to leave you in your oldest brothers safe hands while he got to the bottom of this entire ordeal.
He noticed Sylvie was still at Med, Foster mentioning they were running low on a few supplies so they needed some stocking up. Jay took this opportunity to interview the two paramedics and try to get further understanding on this situation that wasn't making much sense to him.
Arriving at your school, Jay had some thoughts in mind but they weren't very concrete and his confidence wasn't as strong as he'd like it to be.
Walking into the school, Jay immediately noticed an entire class sitting and standing around in the corridor waiting in front of the principals office.
One of the girls who had been sitting in a chair had caught sight of Jay, her eyes widening before she smiled, gently nudging the girl next to her and pointing in his direction. The girls reaction was the exact same.
This created a sort of domino effect as the boy next to her noticed Jay and everyone was telling the other of his sudden arrival. The once silent corridor was now beginning to fill with murmurs and whispers, all their eyes glued onto his figure that moved down the corridor, their shocked faces quickly changing into smiles and smirks.
It seems that Jay had a reputation of sorts.
"Why are you making so much noise? What did I just say about talking-"
The principal cut himself off from his scolding when he suddenly noticed Jay's presence, his face blanching as all the pieces clicked into place.
"Detective Halstead! What a surprise, we weren't expecting to see you so soon-"
This time Jay cut him off, not too bothered about his lack manners. "My brothers with Y/N at the hospital so I thought there was no other perfect time."
The principal remained silent.
"Now, why don't you explain to me why my sister fainted under your watch?"
The students behind Jay couldn't help but snicker knowingly.

Request: I would love to see something Like IT’s Career day at school and Jay and Will come to teach about their jobs along with others. And Halstead's sister gets bullied. During the break of moving in between careers someone comes and beats her up in like the bathroom and leaves her there and no one notices her being gone untill the end of the day. (I kinda want like Fire, Med, and Pd to find her)
sorry if it doesn’t make much sense you can choose how to end it and stuff
I also LOVE your fics I can’t wait to see more❤️
Authors Note; Y’all really love the angst huh, gotta deliver,, and hopefully you enjoy this little drabble. Also, part of me really wanted to title this, 'big sister hugs' because I think that Hailey would be the best big sister and also give the best big sister advice.
warnings: private girls school (yes that's a warning), bullying, getting jumped (i guess?), hospital and injuries,, Jay and Will not knowing girl bullying and being stubborn, a very poorly written plot
Tumblr media
High school was not always easy, but you were comfortable at your school with your friends. That was until there was a security issue and Jay’s information got leaked. Your apartment, school, Jay’s license plate, everything that could be used to track him ended up in the hands of the ‘bad guys’. Jay and Will had broken the news to you that they were pulling you from your current school, and moving to another school closer to Will’s. A private girls school, the ones with the fancy uniforms and stuck-up kids who thought the law didn’t apply to them because they had money. You hated it. You had begged Jay and Will to let you stay, but there was no changing their mind.
The first week was hell, you knew no one. Starting in the middle of the year meant that everyone knew you were the new girl. You were enrolled under your mother's maiden name, for extra safety. It was weird not hearing your name followed by ‘Halstead’. After the first week was gone, you decided to stick it out until the problem with Jay blew over, by then, you could probably convince them to let you go back to your other school. Three weeks passed by and intelligence solved Jay’s leak.
“So,” You began on Sunday family dinner, “Now that the whole leak in PD is over…”
Jay and Will shared a look from across the table.
You narrowed your eyes, “What?”
Will ran a hand down his face, “Listen…”
“You won't let me go back.”
“It’s a better school-”
“Better?” You spat, “How is it better? I hate it there!”
“It’ll get better,” Jay said, “You just need more time to adjust.”
“I don’t want to adjust-”
“We’re not pulling you out,” Jay said, “I know you're struggling right now, but you’ll make some friends and-”
“I can’t believe you.” You pulled away from the table, leaving your half-eaten dinner where it was and stomping off to your room. Jay stood to follow, ready to scold you for storming away and having such an attitude.
“Jay,” Hailey grabbed his arm, “Let her cool down.”
Tumblr media
Jay and Will didn’t budge on your school. You had gone from begging to bargaining with no success. Now you were giving them both the silent treatment. You knew it was immature and frankly ridiculous, but you were too mad to think clearly. Jay had already scolded you for not talking to him for the last week. You had ignored him.
Hailey was the only one you spoke too, because it wasn’t her fault that Jay was being stubborn. Even so, you didn’t tell her everything when she stopped by your room. Namely, the career day that was coming up. You knew telling her meant she would tell Jay. And Jay and Will had a terrible habit of embarrassing you at school. At your last school's career day, Will and Jay had come and talked for hours about their funniest stories. You knew if they came this time, your peers wouldn’t be as amused.
When career day did roll around, your dean stood in front of the school in the auditorium, introducing students and their parents. Your school was much smaller than your last one - something about smaller class sizes being better for learning - so the auditorium wasn’t fully packed.
Not everyone brought their parents, but the popular kids with parents who had good jobs came. Like the group of girls who hated you, who all brought at least one parent. Your dean invited students to the stage by class and then had the student introduce their parents. Your class was last, the biggest number of parents who had come. You were sat at the end of your class, mostly because you didn't have anyone to bring. Not that it bothered you.
“Next up, we have Olivia and her mom, Jen.”
Jen was a dentist, she spent 10 minutes explaining how her job worked and then opened for questions. There weren’t many, mostly a few questions from seniors about collages and other stuff.
Then it was Sophie, with her dad the Banker.
By the time the girls who hated you were called up, you were ready to fall asleep. No one here had an interesting job, most of the jobs were boring well playing jobs that you could never see yourself doing.
The main girl who didn’t like you was Madison. She wasn’t fond of how the teachers asked you for answers in class, not that you could do anything about that. Her friend group was made up of 5 or 6 girls who were seemingly lovely. All smiles and compliments around teachers but spread vicious rumors and lies when adults couldn’t hear. You had heard them speaking about you a few times, not that you cared. It wasn’t great to be the new girl with all the rumors, but you had banked on leaving the school before for long. Which, you knew now, wasn’t an option. So now you were stuck with the girls who all hated you for rumors or lies that you didn’t even know.
Madison brought her mum and dad with her, real estate agents who worked together selling multi-billion dollar houses. The whole time she had a smug look on her face. When she sat back down in her row, she turned in her seat, looking back at you.
“Didn’t bring anyone?” She asked.
You didn’t bother replying.
“Is it because your parents are coke addicts?” Her friend beside her pressed.
How that rumor even started you didn’t know, it was so absurd.
“Or is it because they’re dead?” Madison pressed.
You gave her a bored look, “I’ll take my family over your fraud family any day.”
Madison opened her mouth to bark something back, but was shushed by your teacher. She turned back to face the front, arms crossed over her chest. No doubt stewing in your words.
“We now have some guests to speak to you,” The Dean said through the microphone, “We reached out to some of our first responders and invited them to come speak to you too. Everyone please welcome Dr Asher and Dr Halstead from Gaffney Chicago Med.”
Will and Hannah walked to the stage, both in their Med scrubs with doctors coats on. Will was looking for you, you could tell from the way his eyes scanned the faces in the audience. You slumped in your chair, avoiding looking at him at all.
How did he find out? Did he and Jay find out somehow? Did your school contact them?
You really wanted to disappear now, your face was no doubt bright red by how much it was burning. You prayed silently that Will hadn’t told Jay, but you knew it was a useless prayer. If Will was here Jay would be too.
You got your answer when the dean explained that there were more guests outside on the fields. She ordered everyone to head that way, ushering students with promises of something ‘exciting’.
Outside, firehouse 51 had parked their rigs on the grass. 51 had their ladder extended, Mouch standing at the controls grinning like a champion. Not far from Mouch was Trudy, flanked by two patrol cars and their officers. Looking across the gathered first responders it didn’t take long to spot Jay and Intelligence. Their own cars were parked on the grass, the lights on. Everyone but Voight had their vests on, adding to the dramatic atmosphere already created.
Students huddled around, entranced by the cars and rigs which you had seen plenty of times. You tried to hide towards the back, but Kelly had spotted you and tried to usher you closer. You shrugged back at him, trying to make it look like you were stuck within the crowd.
“Firstly, we would like to thank Sergeant Trudy Platt and Sergeant Hank Voight, as well as Chief Wallace Boden for coming today. We are hugely appreciative to hear from you,” The dean spoke into a microphone, “Secondly, I want to ask students to be respectful, as these hard working men and women have taken time out of their busy days to come and speak to us. So we are going to listen and show respect. There will be time for questions and demonstrations at the end. Please Welcome Sergeant Trudy Platt.”
The crowd clapped as Trudy took the mic, but it wasn’t too enthusiastic. Trudy gave a similar speech to last year. Along the lines of what made district 21 special, intelligence and the hardworking patrol officers. She talked about fake calls and how breaking the law would wind you up in her cells etc. It was funny, a few quips earning laughs from teachers and parents. But you had heard it all before. You were dreading what the others would say. You didn’t want everyone knowing your brother was a cop, that would cause way too many issues.
So instead, you slipped away from the crowd, heading back towards the school building to hide in the bathroom.
You didn’t think anyone would notice, most people were paying attention to the speakers or interested in the rigs. You were wrong, of course, being followed almost immediately by Madison and a couple of her friends.
You got to the lockers before they announced themselves.
“What did you mean my parents were frauds, bitch?”
You turned around in fright, not even hearing them sneak up on you.
“I didn’t mean it,” You replied, “I’m sorry.”
You were, kind of. Mostly you were sorry that you had said it, because she genuinely seemed shocked. But this was Chicago, anyone with any money committed fraud, it was kind of the standard.
“I don’t care if you're sorry,” Madison snarled, she was taller than you so when she stepped closer you couldn’t help feeling intimidated. “What did you mean?”
“Madison-”
One of her friends pushed you hard against the lockers with a forearm over your collar, “Answer the question.”
You were by no means a confrontational person. Growing up, Jay always tried to teach you to talk out your issues, violence or fighting wasn’t a good solution. Will was the same, although both of them weren’t always the best at doing as they counseled.
“I just meant that,” You were panicking under the glare of all three girls, “You know, this is chicago and-”
“And what? Everyone is a criminal like your addict parents?” Madison got in your face again.
“My parents weren’t addicts,” You scoffed, now annoyed that she wouldn’t let that go.
“No?” The girl who was holding you back moved her arm further up your neck, pressing against your throat, “Then where are they?”
“If my parents were addicts, would you really think I'd be in a private school?” You pressed, “Use your brain for once, please.”
You should have known that would piss Madison off. She let out an annoyed scoff then pulled back her fist and punched your square in the nose. The force slammed your head back into the lockers, the sound echoing through the empty halls. The punch wasn’t hard enough to break your nose, but you would feel the blood start to drip down your lip. Madison shook her hand like she had taken more damage than you had.
“Want to say that again?” The third girl finally spoke up.
It was like they were all gaining confidence in the security of the three of them. When one of them said something the others would laugh and smirk.
“I don’t like bullies, you know,” Madison said.
God, the irony.
This time the punch came from the third girl, landing in your stomach. You didn't know her name, but she was on the volleyball team, so her punch was much stronger. Your body doubled over, arms crossing over your stomach as your lungs tried to fight your diaphragm for air. The arm holding you up was dropped, and your body fell to the ground as you tried to force yourself to take some deep breaths.
“This is what you deserve,” A girl said, before another blow landed on your ribs. The wind was knocked out of you again, causing you to cough and choke.
Madison crouched down to your level, “Bullies like you deserve to be put in their place.”
You didn’t have time to appreciate the irony this time, because she was kicking your head, hard.
Your body reacted on instinct, curling into itself to try to protect you from another blow that was sure to come.
“Hey!”
The three girls sprinted at the voice, running away from their actions.
“Hey, kid,” A hand on your shoulder made you flinch, when your vision cleared you realized it was just Kelly. He held his hands out to show you he meant no harm, then gently helped you sit up.
“You’re alright,” He said softly, steading you sitting against the lockers. You couldn’t even reply, focused solely on breathing through the pain in your head and side.
“I found her,” Kelly said into his radio, “North Hallway, bring a jump bag.”
Kelly gently touched the side of your face, tilting your head to look at the side you had been kicked.
“You still got that med kit in your bag?” He asked, knowing Kidd had taught you that in girls on fire.
“Yeah,” You said softly, your voice above a whisper.
Kelly ripped open your bag, rummaging through it until he found the small first aid kit. He was only after gauze, once he secured it, he ripped the package open and pressed the gauze to your head.
You winced, instinctively pulling away from him.
“I know,” He said, sitting down next to you so he could hold the gauze in place, “Sorry kid.
You both looked up as the sound of footsteps came running towards you. You might as well have been on fire, the entire house was rushing towards you. Jay and Intelligence were there too, Will and Asher running along beside everyone.
“This is overkill,” You said to no one in particular.
Kelly chuckled, shuffling so that Will could take his place next to you, “We’re all here for you, kid.”
Will replaced Kelly’s hand with his own, when Kelly pulled away you could see blood on his hand.
Jay croached on your other side, letting Will, Hannah and Brett take care of you.
“What happened?” He asked, looking over your bloody nose, head injury and the way you were holding your side.
You didn’t want to be known as a snitch, one glance behind your brother and you could see students being held back by teachers and 51. The school day was almost over, everyone would be gathering their things to leave. You hoped you weren’t in front of someone's locker who hated you, this would definitely make them hate you more.
You looked back at Jay, his eyes filled with worry, “What happened, squirt?”
“I, uh.. I fell.”
Will scoffed, “You fell?”
“Yeah, I’m clumsy,” You said.
“You fell and hit your nose and the side of your head?” Hannah asked, voice soft, “Are you sure that's the story you want to tell?”
Over her shoulder, Kelly was talking to Voight and Hailey. Hailey was pointing something out, a camera that was positioned above one of the classroom doors.
“Yeah,” You didn’t sound confident at all. But right now, you wanted to be anywhere but here.
Jay looked pissed, but he didn’t say anything. He got to his feet and stood out of the way as Hannah and Will helped you stand. They lead you over to the stair chair, despite your very vocal argument that you were fine.
Being wheeled through the crowd of students and their parents was the most embarrassing thing you had ever experienced. You passed by Madison at one point, who was leaning against her locker talking to her parents like nothing ever happened. You avoided looking her way, instead focusing on what Brett was saying about getting to the rig.
Outside the building things were less stressful and crowded. You managed to convince the four hovering adults that you could stand on your own to get into the back of the ambulance, even if you didn’t really think you needed one.
“I’m really fine,” You argued for probably the fifth time, “I think you're overreacting.”
Will sighed, running a hand down his face, “You are too stubborn for your own good,” He muttered.
Violet chuckled, “Just lay back, alright? You aren’t getting out of this, no matter how much you complain.”
She was right, but that didn’t stop you from pouting the whole way to Med.
At Med, Will hovered as Hannah stapled the laceration on your head. You weren’t too happy about the idea of being stabled back together, but Will had taken a photo of the laceration to prove you needed it.
“That’s so gross,” You said, pushing the phone away from you.
“That’s why you need staples,” Will explained, rolling his eyes.
Not long after Hannah had treated you and left you to rest, Jay, Hailey and Voight walked in.
“Are you doing alright?” Jay asked, hesitant to start another argument.
“I’m fine,” You repeated, “I don’t know why everyones making such a big deal.”
“You were attacked at-”
“I fell.” You interrupted.
“Y/N-”
“Jay.” You echoed in the same tone.
Jay's face flashed with irritation, he looked to Will for help.
“We know that’s not true,” Will said, giving you his best parental disappointed look.
“The whole thing was caught by the security cameras,” Hailey spoke softly, she was the only person in the room who knew what it was like to be a teenage girl in high school, “We just want to know what they said.”
You tried to come up with some kind of explanation that wouldn’t get anyone in trouble, but you came up short.
“It’s not that big of a deal,” You shrugged, avoiding eye contact with all of them.
Will leaned forward, he looked wary, “Listen, squirt, we want to help, but we can’t unless you tell us the truth.”
“That is the truth,” You argued back, crossing your arms definitely, “It’s not a big deal.”
“You’re in the hospital!” Jay gestured around, “What about this is ‘not a big deal’.”
You scowled, refusing to say anything else and just sitting silently.
Voight squeezed Jay's shoulder, “We’ll let her rest, come back later?”
Jay nodded, not bidding you goodbye as he stomped out of the room. You hadn’t seen him this mad in forever, you weren’t sure if this would blow over as easily as your other fights. Voight followed after Jay, he told you to get some rest then followed his detective to try to calm him down.
Will got up to leave too, he told you to rest and said he would come back soon. When the three left, it was only Hailey who stayed behind.
“I know you’ve been struggling at school,” She took a seat on the bed next to you, “I know what that’s like.”
You fiddled with your fingers, not wanting to admit she was right.
“You know what happened today wasn’t right,” Hailey continued, “Jay wants to press charges.”
“What? No! That’ll just make it wor…” You stopped yourself.
“Make what worse?” Hailey pressed.
You took a deep breath, trying not to get upset.
“Whatever is going on, I can help,” Hailey promised.
“You can’t get me out of that school,” You scowled.
“I think after today, that might be possible.”
You leaned back into the pillows. Dr Asher had given you some pain meds for your head, they removed the sharp pain and replaced it with a dull throb. You could feel it more as you got more upset.
“There’s this stupid rumor that my parents are addicts,” you explained, “Madison is always taunting me with it, saying that's why no one ever comes to parent evenings or teacher interviews…”
Hailey didn’t say anything, she just sat listening patiently.
“Before you guys came, she asked why my parents weren’t here and I said that I would rather have my family over her fraud one.”
Hailey nodded as she listened.
“It was stupid and as soon as I said it, I regretted it. When we were outside I went inside to go to the bathroom and Madison and her friends followed me… They, uh… Madison wanted to know why I said it and I apologized but she didn’t- she, she didn’t care and…”
Hailey got the cue, “Okay. It’s alright.” She pulled you into a gentle hug. “Everything’s going to be alright.”
