Happy 25th anniversary Halloweentown! This year is full of anniversaries. Hocus Pocus turned thirty. Nightmare before Christmas turns thirty.
Ray Bradbury's The Halloween Tree animated movie turned thirty. Neil Gaiman's The Sandman turns thirty-five. Beetlejuice turned thirty-five. And today the movie Halloweentown turns twenty-five-years-old. Feel old yet? Halloweentown (not connected to Nightmare before Christmas) struck while the iron was hot, just one month after the first Harry Potter book was published in the US. Halloweentown was a relatively low budget made for TV movie for The Disney Channel (and now available both on DVD and on Disney+.) The plot was about a young girl named Marnie who is about to turn thirteen. Marnie's mother wants her to be "Normal." But her grandmother, Aggie, has other things in mind. Marie is actually from a line of semi-immortal (long lived) witches. And if she does not start using her powers at age thirteen, they will atrophy and disappear and she will remain mortal. Even back in 1998 I was disgusted in Marnie's mother. Imagine if you went to an alien planet where the life expectancy is only about thirty years but your mother decides its best you be like those aliens so she keeps you from learning you came from Earth and eating Earth food so that you will only live thirty years "like everyone else on this planet." To me that's what Marnie's mother was like. She was deliberately crippling her daughter. Or worse, imagine if you went to a planet where no one can walk. You can. But your mother wants you to be like everyone else so she's perfectly happy to saw your legs off. That's how Marnie's mother felt to me in regard to trying to strip her of her (for her) natural abilities. It's not over-analysis. This is the basic premise. Anyway, it turns out Aggie (the grandmother, who was played by the late Debbie Reynolds) is from a pocket dimension of entities we associate with Halloween. Monsters, creatures of Nightmare, ghosts, zombies, skeletons, etc. This dimension is called Halloweentown.
Tumblr media
Marnie and her other siblings follow Aggie to Halloweentown where they foil the machinations of Voldemort... I mean Kalabar. There's even a scene in one of the Halloweentown movies where they spot magical broom sticks for sale very similar to the scene in the first Harry Potter story. In the scene Marnie is intrigued by the latest model (which is a bit more high tech looking than a nimbus 2000, by the way). This was three-years before the first Harry Potter movie but only one month after the first book was published in the US. Marnie embraces her magick and her mother begrudgingly allows Aggie to train her in the use of her powers. The movie was a surprise hit for The Disney channel and spawned three sequels. Halloweentown 2: Kalabar's revenge which featured Peter Wingfield (Methos in Highlander the Series). Marnie's mother annoyed me in the second movie too, because when someone is shown Marnie's room he's disappointed with how mundane it is and Marnie mentions that her mother insists her room be "normal" and she not have her Halloween-y or magical stuff in her bedroom. They tone the mother down and make her more likable in the third and fourth film but they really never had that woman grow and yet we were not supposed to hate her. This dominating, personality-repressing, and abusive behavior was treated like it was perfectly acceptable. Halloweentown 3 AKA Halloweentown High. This was an odd one. Marnie becomes guardian for some exchange students from Halloweentown who want to attend human school in our world (now that our world knows Halloweentown exists) but modern day monster hunters want to fan the flames of bigotry and hate and keep humans and monsters separate.
Tumblr media
Halloweentown 4 AKA Return to Halloweentown. Marnie (who has been recast) attends university in Halloweentown where the boy she has a crush on is revealed to be a depowered family member of Kalabar but a good guy. I really was not comfortable with the idea of the entire family being stripped of their powers because they were releated to a creep but ...okay... Also Marnie learns that Grandma Aggie technically should be the Queen of Halloweentown but relinquished her title and a magical amulet that lets her dominate the wills of others, because she believes in the importance of free will. For all their flaws I still enjoy these movies. I almost think these films were first intended to be live-action tie-ins to Nightmare before Christmas but Disney decided they didn't want to deal with Tim Burton and just didn't reference any of his characters even though the concept of a Halloweentown in another world where everyday is Halloween was literally created by Tim Burton in his long-form poem that became the movie Nightmare before Christmas. Anyway, Happy 25th anniversary Halloweentown!

... But it’s... not a molehill this time, it’s a hole, a plot hole, and it’s getting deeper. Penny nor Chase here, we’re Rita and Max of Plot Holy! We are releasing a podcast modeled after Mt. FEMTOBER BLOG: Centennials & Strikes
What do Sherlock Holmes fighting dinosaurs and French women having sex with cars have in common?
Tumblr media
And what is Freddy Krueger's connection to Halloweentown?
Tumblr media
Every Femtober, I try to include a category or two that's relevant to the events of the year so far. The double WGA/SAG-AFTRA Strike is already unprecedented, but for it to happen on the centennial of two much-maligned studios is deeply ironic.
This year, I watched two movies from non-AMPTP studios, and two movies from Disney and Warner Brothers. Unfortunately due to the inherent lack of women directing for studios, finding a good match for Disney and WB was difficult, but the indie studio films also presented an interesting challenge.
Though women-directed films at Disney and WB are among the highest grossing of all time, the number of films women are directing for these studios is very limited. And on top of that, horror is an even smaller number, particularly in Disney’s family-friendly catalog.
I wrote previously about my Warner Brothers pick Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare, which I had already seen. While the title of the film is pretty telling, it does ultimately feel like a bit of a franchise killer. Rachel Talalay really wanted to make something different, and she sure as hell did it, but at the cost of lessening some of the horror of the franchise. It feels very meta, but it's really not until New Nightmare that meta horror really takes shape. The overall story is lackluster, but it's a worthy experiment into a new approach to the genre that's largely unappreciated.
My Disney pick, Halloweentown II: Kalabar's Revenge, was also a rewatch but one I had not seen in quite some time. I can't say I really have fond memories of Halloweentown II specifically, but I do remember Disney Channel playing the commercial for it constantly.
What was most surprising to me about this DCOM was how scary it actually was. I initially struggled between choosing this movie, Hocus Pocus 2, and Ravenous. They all would be rewatches, but Hocus Pocus 2 is just bad, and as much as I love Ravenous it's already been in 2 previous Femtobers. I was worried listing Halloweentown II as a horror was a bit of a copout, but it's definitely horror by way of kid camp. There's something Tim Burton-esque about the first and second installments, and in general the Halloween DCOMs always tended to give me the creeps. It wasn't until I was in high school that I rewatched Don't Look Under the Bed, which scared the crap out of me as a kid.
For having such a tame reputation, Disney has some surprisingly effective scares. On top of that, the thing that really struck me about Halloweentown II is how uncomfortable the movie is. Kids are familiar with the joy and colors of the first movie, and in this one they've been replaced by bleak gray and monotone. It's definitely unsettling.
Tumblr media
I have to admit, for my non-struck studio picks I wanted to be as meme-y as possible. The idea of putting an Asylum film in the same category as a Palme D'Or winner from Neon was hilarious to me.
Unfortunately for me, the meme wasn't really worth it. Asylum's take on Sherlock Holmes from Rachel Lee Goldenberg is simply dreadful (so much so that I turned it off after 30 minutes - OOPS!). Which really makes me scratch my head, because while Goldenberg has directed the Asylum films Sherlock Holmes and Sunday School Musical, she's also directed the very charming HBO Max film Unpregnant. Hopefully that means she's broken out of the Asylum, so to speak, because it was a really great film! (Incidentally, she also directed one of my all time favorite Lifetime Christmas Movies, Love at the Christmas Table - also a very good movie!)
Tumblr media
Titane is a whole different beast. I wasn't sure what to expect; everything I had seen and everyone I had talked to warned me that Titane was not for the weak of heart - or stomach. But, I heard similar things about Raw, which I didn't find unpalatable at all.
If I may go on a bit of a tangent, I feel like with horror, oftentimes there's kind of an all-or-nothing stance on what we can watch. If you've seen one you've seen them all. Well in any film, but I think in particular horror, there are things that some people just don't want to see, for one reason or another. Maybe this isn't "normal" behavior, but I'm not really that concerned about spoilers a lot of the time, so I tend to seek out the content of a movie before watching. Too many times I've been triggered by something I just didn't want to see. So maybe it's okay to normalize that idea a little bit. Horror is visceral and scary, but it's also fun, you know?
That being said, I felt like I had a pretty good handle on what to expect from Titane. The plot, however, threw me for a bit of a loop. Everything I had seen about it really only focused on the first 20 minutes, when the real story unfolds after that. Titane isn't the best film I've ever watched, but how exhilarating is it to find a movie that goes in a direction you never thought possible?
I also find it interesting that because Titane is regarded as being so transgressive, none of the plot really ended up getting spoiled for me, because I never really saw anybody talking about it. Titane is distributed by Neon, and along with A24, those were the indie studios I sought out to complete this category. And you would think that indie studios would have a few more titles to choose from directed by women. Of course, this is just a sampling of two studios, but I did feel a bit wanting by the selection, particularly with A24. I can't help but feel a little discouraged that even the indie studios are becoming "mainstream" in their demographics.
There are plenty of indie horror films directed by women, but quality and availability tend to make these films suffer. I'm not so sure there's an easy fix besides: let women make more movies. Hopefully the success of Barbie, and the potential success of Wish and The Marvels will move the needle a bit.
Tumblr media
Other Disney female-directed horror films: • Clock, directed by Alexis Jacknow • Ravenous, directed by Antonia Bird • Hocus Pocus 2, directed by Anne Fletcher
Other Warner Brothers female-directed horror/horror-adjacent films: • Red Riding Hood, directed by Catherine Hardwicke • Embrace of the Vampire, directed by Anne Goursaud • The Banana Splits Movie, directed by Danishka Esterhazy • Daphne & Velma, directed by Suzi Yoonessi

Let's try this again
Breakdown of DCOMs based on whether they could cross over with CTDL; this is not a list of which do, but which could
I did not consider anything after 2004. Main two disqualifiers are "other supernatural element" and solely-personal-opinion "Bush-era vibes." "Doesn't conflict" means it doesn't have either of those but I don't really feel like the same universe based on, again, purely subjective vibes. By contrast, "crossover possible" means it doesn't conflict and I could hypothetically see it working
I would love to know your thoughts on these!
1997
Under Wraps - No, supernatural
1998
You Lucky Dog - No, supernatural
Brink! - Yes, does crossover
Halloweentown - No, supernatural
1999
Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century - No, supernatural
Can of Worms - No, supernatural
The Thirteenth Year - Duh
Smart House - No, weird tech that I'm counting as supernatural
Johnny Tsunami - Yes, crossover possible
Genius - No, weird tech that I'm counting as supernatural
Don't Look Under the Bed - No, supernatural
Horse Sense - Doesn't conflict
2000
Up, Up, and Away - No, supernatural
The Color of Friendship - Technically doesn't conflict but it's weird because it's based on a true story so going to say no
Alley Cats Strike - Doesn't conflict
Rip Girls - Yes, crossover possible
Miracle in Lane 2 - Doesn't conflict
Stepsister from Planet Weird - No, supernatural
Ready to Run - Doesn't conflict
Quints - Doesn't conflict
The Other Me - No, weird tech that I'm counting as supernatural
Mom's Got a Date with a Vampire - No, supernatural
Phantom of the Megaplex - No, supernatural
The Ultimate Christmas Present - No, weird tech that I'm counting as supernatural and I think Santa Claus exists, so also supernatural
2001
Zenon: The Zequel - No, supernatural
Motocrossed - Yes, crossover possible
The Luck of the Irish - No, supernatural
Hounded - No, Bush-era vibes
Jett Jackson: The Movie - No, supernatural
The Jennie Project - No, Bush-era vibes
Jumping Ship - Doesn't conflict
The Poof Point - No, supernatural
Halloweentown II: Kalabar's Revenge - No, supernatural
'Twas the Night - No, supernatural
2002
Double Teamed - No, Bush-era vibes
Cadet Kelly - No, EXTREME Bush-era vibes
Tru Confessions - No, Bush-era vibes
Get a Clue - No, Bush-era vibes
Gotta Kick It Up! - Technically doesn't conflict but it's weird because it's based on a true story so going to say no
A Ring of Endless Light - No, supernatural (but it gets a few points for having otherwise similar aesthetics to TTY/shared production team/plagiarizing the third act plot/re-use of stock footage)
The Scream Team - No, supernatural
2003
You Wish! - No, supernatural
Right on Track - Haven't seen this but the summary gives me Bush-era vibes so going to say no
The Even Stevens Movie - No, plain and simple
Eddie's Million Dollar Cook-Off - Doesn't conflict
The Cheetah Girls - 50/50 on this one based on vibes and I haven't seen it in a while so not sure how much it might conflict/whether it references post-9/11 actual events
Full-Court Miracle - Technically doesn't conflict but it's weird because it's based on a true story so going to say no
2004
Pixel Perfect - No, weird tech that I'm counting as supernatural
Going to the Mat - Haven't seen this but the summary gives me Bush-era vibes so going to say no
Zenon: Z3 - No, supernatural
Stuck in the Suburbs - Doesn't conflict, crossover unlikely but gets extra points for 90-esque popstar fandom, playing with the advent of new tech and influence on teen culture, and thinly veiled queer subtexts
Tiger Cruise - This specifically references 9/11 which does not happen in the CTDL universe so no
Halloweentown High - No, supernatural

The Halloweentown series also has a strong presence, showcasing films like the 1998 original TV movie with a cast including Debbie Reynolds, Kimberly J.
