kageyama’s drinking water. he likes to have his head clear, unclouded. especially when everyone around him has sloppy movements and unfocused eyes. he likes to be the reliable one. the control tower.

he’s leaning against a wall with his arms crossed over his chest and trying to convince himself that he is not being weird and that his behavior is normal, fine even.

she’s on the other side of the room, laughing with her friends. he’s never seen her look so happy; the smile she has around yachi and kiyoko is so wide and bright it looks like it hurts. he can’t help but look at her when she smiles like that, even if makes his chest tighten and his head dizzy. even if it feels like staring directly at the sun.

kageyama tries to think of things he could do that would put that smile on her face. things he could say. he wants to be responsible for that look in her eyes.

there’s an elbow gently knocking into his arm and it pulls his attention away from her.

oikawa is grinning when kageyama turns to face him and the sight automatically makes him scowl. “i bet they’re talking about you.”

“shut up,” kageyama spits out, but his grip around his water tightens. “mind your business.”

“she’s too drunk for you to make a move now,” oikawa sighs, like this is an inconvenience to him. “guess ramen’s on me.”

kageyama frowns. “what are you-“

he’s cut off by another nudge to his arm. “oh but look at that,” oikawa nods towards the other side of the room, where she stands. kageyama’s gaze follows his, and he eyes find her at once. that bright, dazzling smile has been replaced by a twisted expression of disgust, and by her side not one of her friends, but a stranger. a man kageyama’s never seen before. a man she’s taking a step back from. “that’s a good chance for you to-“

he doesn’t even wait for oikawa to finish his sentence before his feet are moving in her direction.

he gets closer, and the conversation hits his ears. an unfamiliar voice coming from the stranger, “c’mon, you don’t have to be so uptight, i’m just messing around.”

and then her voice. clear and sharp and in a tone he’s never heard her speak in before. “i don’t care. go be a freak somewhere else. no one here wants to talk to you. no one here wants to give your their number. why are you embarrassing yourself? go home and learn to take no for an answer.”

kageyama stops. he watches as the stranger turns red and tries to stutter out a response before giving up, and turning on his heels to disappear among the crowd of people.

for a minute, he imagines it being him. he pictures that look of disgust directed at him, calling him a freak, calling him disgusting. rejecting him. humiliating him. he pictures it, and his skin gets cold.

but then, as she’s watching the stranger slink away, her eyes catch his. and that harsh look melts. her glare turns into a face-splitting grin at the sight of him. and it heats up his skin right back up.

“tobio!” she calls, and his heart beats in his throat. “if any dickheads like that give you a hard time, let me know, and i’ll put them in their place for you.”

it occurs to him then that he’s ridiculous for doubting her. he respects her too much to treat her like some challenge. she respects him too much to ever treat his feelings as cruelly as he fears.

something washes over him, and he can’t help but replicate the smile on her face. it feels natural to smile around her.

Toru Oikawa headcanons

• Relationship with Toru would be a bumpy and winding road, one that is sometimes nice and pleasant and then turns around and leads you through the worst forest you have ever seen in your life. I think Oikawa would fall in love with someone who blew his mind with their indifference towards him. It doesn't matter if you were a childhood friend or someone he happened to meet at highschool. It would be important for him whether you don't treat him like his fans do.

• Winning the hearts of the girls he could have easily wouldn't be a challenge at all. And the best things always require effort and work. He follows this philosophy in volleyball and it would be no different in the case of love.

• You can hit him on the shoulder and in the head with books for every stupid comment but if he sets his sights on you, you can be sure that he won't give up. A relationship with him would consist of flirtations that you wouldn't take seriously and rare, serious moments when you would feel that what he was saying was sincere and came from the heart. Of course, someone or something would always have to interrupt you.

• Have you styled your hair? He will destroy it. Is this a new hair tie? Now it's his, he'll keep it for good luck. Who gave him permission? He gave it to himself. Same case with casually adding -chan to your name...

• Hajime would be the greatest wingman in your relationship. For a long time he would say that Toru needs to take care of himself because he doesn't deserve you but eventually he would realize that you couldn't live without each other. He wouldn't push either of you to confess but he would certainly discreetly try to give you as much time alone as possible. And it's not easy to find excuses for so many Aobajosai members...

• Toru knows what he wants. And although you would have to wait to hear it in a serious and mature way, it would have been worth it. He would go for a walk with you somewhere on the boulevards, by the water with a nice view. Surrounded by the dim, night lights, he would tell you how he felt. And these would be sincere words. Different from those that he feeds many people on a daily basis. Thoughtful and adequate as always but not superficial, hidden in the depths of his mind when he thinks about your smile in his free time.

• Oikawa likes it when you take off his glasses and then kiss him. He jokes that it's a bit like a scene from a movie. And it's even better when your friends are watching. Let them be consumed by jealousy. One time Kageyama asked you if you were sure you knew what you were getting into.

• Half of the serves since you became a couple are dedicated to you. At training, in high school, he will shout about it loudly, as long as you are anywhere nearby. In more serious matches, when he got into the Argentine national team, he simply put two fingers to his lips and blew a kiss towards the audience. Half the fans were dying of delight before they finally realized you were in the bleachers.

• Sometimes it's hard to balance a career as a professional setter with daily responsibilities. You travel with Toru but for most part, your relationship is a long-distance type. You talk a lot on the phone and on video calls. You get as many discounts on airlines as possible to see each other as often as you can.

yn did muster up the courage to ask kageyama how to clean the coffee machine right as he was about to clock out so he said "sure" and put down his bad but yn felt so bad afterwards she didn't even remember what he had told her to do the day after

but he had been so nice she made an effort to remember his name that time

tsukki and hinata were in anatomy and physiology when hinata called for a group meeting

tsukki read hinata's text moments before something bit his arm and he accidentally yelled in the middle of class

hinata did not apologize

everyone assured yams it was okay to keep tabs on his friends because he's just trying to make sure everyone's safe which is why he has a list of everyone's schedules so that anyone can easily reach out to another or if someone's not responding, he knows where they might be

yachi and tsukki are literally out for blood everday

the cafe does keep up "the gift card christmas tree" curse and pulls out a whiteboard every december to keep track of how many days it's been since it was last knocked over
