Masterpost, Part 9 2/2
Tumblr media
It’s late evening — way past the regular business hours, so you have to use the spare key the boys made for you and enter through the back door of the shop. You clumsily shuffle through the hallway due to your hands being full from the bags of carry-out you picked up on the way over.
Sam must’ve already cleaned up and headed out based on the strong odor of glass cleaner assaulting your nose as soon as you walk through the curtains. Music is playing upstairs, which is something you’ve come to expect whenever there’s a human presence in this place. What takes you by surprise is the amount of boisterous laughter cutting through it.
You wrestle, adjust your loot, and begin making your ascent on the staircase. Jake is in his usual spot when he’s not with a client, hunched over at his desk working on a design, leaving Josh and the man he is tattooing as the culprits for all the noise. Normally, you wouldn’t bat an eye at whoever happens to be in the chair after the last incident, but something about him seems different.
What you can pick up on during the short walk from the stairs toward Jake’s desk is Josh’s comfort with him.  He’s not putting on the customer service mask, laughing at bad jokes, and pretending to be interested in dull stories. He’s engaging in everything the man has to say, maybe borderline flirtatious from what you can already see.
You step behind Jake, but he doesn’t hear you approach. You lean over and spot the white wireless earbuds he’s wearing and gently tap him on the shoulder, making him jolt a little. He stops drawing to pluck the left one from his ear and turns to face you.
“Hey,” he mumbles softly with a detectable exhaustion weighing on his voice.
“Hey,” you greet back, hoping that your upbeat tone will help spark some energy in him. After setting the heavy bags of carry-out on the empty space on his desk to free your hands, you begin to massage his shoulders. He doesn’t put up a fight, and instantly drops his pen on the table to lean back into your touch.
“Fuck that feels good,” he groans and rolls his head as you knead the tight knots tangled within his sore muscles.
“Long day?”
He releases a heavy sigh as you work out the tension in his upper back. “Yeah, and of course my last appointment was a fucking nightmare.”
He sucks in a sharp breath of pain as your thumbs roll over him. He’s stiff from his bad posture, but you don’t mean to cause him more discomfort. You relax your pressure and start rubbing the nape of his neck while you ask, “What happened?”
“Just the typical asshole that wants to micromanage the entire thing gets pissy about the price claiming he can get it cheaper somewhere else, and then whines and cries during the entire thing.”
You slip your hands down his chest as you lower yourself into an embrace and bring your lips to his cheek. “I’m sorry, babe. Sounds like you could use a drink and a hot shower.”
He huffs a dry laugh but leans into you while rubbing his fingers along your forearm. “I’m okay.” He gestures to Josh and his client as he continues, “Been trying to unwind for the past hour but with these fucking dickheads it’s almost impossible.”
“Who is that by the way?”
“Oh, that’s Kai, one of Josh’s friends with ben—“ He quickly catches himself and clears his throat,  “Uhh… I mean he’s a good friend of Josh.”
You try to not take anything he says seriously given the source, but what he’s blurted out takes you by surprise. Your mind isn’t playing tricks because you know you heard him correctly, but you ask anyway, “A friend with what?”
He breaks from your hold and pushes away from the desk while turning to face you in his chair. You’ve caught him and now all he can do is deflect. He shakes his head and waves a hand at you. “No, no, no. Just because you bring me food doesn’t mean you get to pull gossip from me.” Your smile and crossed arms threaten him but he stands his ground. “Go find shit out for yourself. Go on. Shoo!”
You scoff, “Are you fucking serious?”
He takes his food from the bag and starts to set up a spot to open it. “Yes. Now leave me to eat in peace, woman.”
You give him a heavy roll of your eyes even though he’s no longer looking at you and take Josh’s food with you on your short walk over to his area of the shop. He immediately senses your presence and finishes the line before lifting his head in your direction.
“Hey, baby.” He breaks away from his conversation and looks at you with an infectious smile, and without control, you can’t help but smile back.
As you step closer, you’re able to get a better look at his friend stretched out along the table. When you first walked in, you could see from a distance that he was covered in tattoos, but now you’re even more surprised that Josh was able to find a free space for another one.
“She gets to be called baby and I don’t?” The suspected Kai scoffs as he combs his inked fingers through his loose, raven-black curls that sit right at the nape of his neck. The calm cadence paired with the crackle of his raspy voice puts off an energy you can’t place.
Josh giggles as he pulls another line across Kai’s stomach. “Well, for one, when you do the things she does with me, you earn being called baby.”
He chuckles as if completely unphased by the needle penetrating his skin. “Where can I sign up for that?”
So they are flirting.
You set Josh’s food down on a table and look over his shoulder to see the piece he’s working on. It’s a hand-sized pair of traditional-style, black, and gray scorpions on each side of Kai’s lower stomach between his hips. With the left side finished and wiped down, the right side is nearly complete. You note the bald spot on Kai’s stomach and imagine the process of Josh having to shave him with a careful hand.
“How much does something like this cost? With all the detail and everything?”
Josh answers without a second thought, “For him? No charge.”
“Really?” You hum.
You flick your eyes up from Josh’s moving hand to catch Kai staring directly at you. His are unwavering, holding a rare intensity from the striking shade of green of his irises —  like polished stones of jade framed by dark lashes. They draw you in, locking you away in their gaze. A part of you feels compelled to break away, as if suddenly too embarrassed to look at him. You don’t, however. You allow your eyes to wander across the many body modifications of his face; the little tattoo on his right cheek, the silver septum ring beneath his nose, the pair of dimple piercings, and the two rings through each side of his bottom lip.
As he studies you, his lips begin to slowly curl up over his teeth, revealing a perfectly devious smile that does nothing but make you weak and flustered. It’s emphasized but the barbells in his cheeks. Charming in the same way as Josh’s, although, with a certain feral quality that causes your thoughts to wander. With eyes staying focused on you, he directs his words to Josh, “How many times do I have to keep telling you that I don’t need free work? Let me pay you this time.”
It gives you enough of a chance to break your focus from him to finally look away. Josh mutters under his breath as he stretches to dip the needle into the ink, “No chance.”
“I’m Kai, by the way,” he introduces himself with an outstretched hand, ignoring Josh’s remark completely. You stumble forward to take it, feeling his soft, yet chilled fingers wrap around yours. You give your name, making his smile grow even larger.  “How do you know Josh?”
You try to convince yourself that he’s simply making light conversation and being polite. That the burning look in his eyes, the tight hold he has on your hand, even down to the drawl of his voice doesn’t mean that there are deeper intentions behind his interest in you.
You’re the one to make the first move in pulling a hand away, breaking free from his grasp. You shift, straightening to stand with heat prickling the back of your neck and forehead. “Oh…well, I met Josh when I came here to get my thigh piece done by Jake.”
Kai pries his eyes away from you to shoot Josh a judgemental stare. Josh returns the glare and huffs with a defensive raise of his hands, “What?!”
He chuckles as he slips his hand beneath his head to prop himself up on the table.“So that’s why I haven’t heard from you.” He teases with a lilt in his voice and winks at you before adding, “Josh, you sly dog.”
Josh responds by smacking Kai across the arm and you have to hold back the laugh that tries to escape your mouth.
“Ouch! What did I say?!” He cries out while rubbing his arm dramatically despite the cheeky smile plastered across his face.
You jump in intending to change the subject, even if your curiosity serves as the driving force to your question. “So how do you guys know each other?”
“Oh, Josh and I go way back,” Kai answers with an exaggerated sigh. “I ‘ve been getting work done for years now…just can’t stay away from all the great prices and wonderful customer service.”
As they stare at each other for a few beats of time, you watch the blush pinken Josh’s cheeks before he forces himself to refocus on his work. “He just keeps coming back no matter how many times we kick him out.”
Kai quips back, “I’m a stray. I’ll hang around if you keep feeding me.” Josh laughs as he works, wiping away the excess ink from his skin after each skillfully placed line. It’s starting to feel like you're interrupting their moment at this point, so you turn to leave until he stops you. “So what’s your Twitter handle?”
Before you have a chance to respond, Josh cuts in with an aggressive shake of his head, “Oh no, she doesn’t do that, Kai.”
Confusion twists the features of his face, matching the expression you’re wearing. “Do what?”
While a mischievous glimmer flashes in Kai’s eyes, Josh slowly lifts his head to you, showing a look of worry.
Kai adjusts as if he’s preparing to tell you the biggest piece of gossip, answering in a demeanor that borders on too relaxed, “Create content.”
While the words process in your brain, Josh’s face drops in disappointment. If his hands weren’t gloved, he would’ve smacked his hand to his face for added effect.
Josh’s reaction causes everything to click into place, making you understand the implication. He means adult content. Your face prickles with heat from your mind running with the thought of it. “Oh...oh.”
Josh braces for your discomfort while Kai continues the small talk as if nothing happened. “So what do you do?”
The question is innocent enough, but the look behind it says otherwise. You laugh nervously, glancing down at Josh to save you.“Nothing that interesting I’m afraid. I’m a barista down at the coffee shop.”
“Good money there?”
“Kai…” Josh scolds softly. “Don’t listen to him, baby.”
He glances up, giving you an expression as if to communicate with you telepathically. Despite the warning, you decide to answer anyway, “Enough to pay my bills I guess. Why?”
Kai flashes another smile and shrugs. “Just curious.”
Before the conversation has a chance of taking another turn,  Josh butts in, “Oh would you look at that! You’re all done.”
Disappointment flashes across his face before he looks down at the new additions on his stomach. “Already?”
Taking the cue, you grab your food and get comfortable on the couch while Josh starts the cleanup process and takes pictures of his work. You do your best to mind your business, keeping your focus on the takeout container balanced on your lap, but you see Kai carefully stand to his feet and walk past you in your periphery. He stops in front of the full-length mirror where you have stood many times before. He’s kept his shirt lifted away from the fresh tattoo with his pants riding so low you can faintly see the patch of his pubic hair peeking above the band of pants. You’re gawking now, staring at how he twists his body and flexes his toned stomach in the mirror. You’re quick to note how his build is similar to Josh’s. He’s lean but with a bit more muscle and a few inches added to his height.
“These look fucking sick, Josh,” Kai calls over his shoulder as he admires the finished pair of scorpions. “Good choice on the placement.”
Josh chuckles, tearing the cling wrap away from the table. “I’m glad you like it.”
You check on Jake to see that he’s still at his desk, munching away on his food with his earpods nestled inside his ears. He glances up and shoots Kai an annoyed look, followed by a heavy roll of his eyes before taking another bite of his food.
Josh pulls your attention away with a dramatic huff, “Are you done staring at yourself or can I bandage you up already?”
Kai turns, revealing an exceptionally cocky grin, “Why? Do you wanna stare instead?”
“No, you idiot. I’m fucking starving and my food is getting cold.”
Amused, he takes his time making his way back to Josh, but you forget to look away, letting him catch you red-handed. He smiles, biting into his bottom lip with a wink sent only to you. You’d normally be irritated by a man with an ego too big for this room. But this one feels different. With a level of confidence that borders on arrogance, you believe it suits him — sex appeal radiating from every part of him. And with a single look, you find your heart racing.
Standing behind Josh while he preps the bandages, Kai ruffles his hair, teasing him, “You’re so cute when you’re mad.”
“Cut it out,” Josh grumbles, but you can see the smile spreading as he half-spins in his chair, reaching back for him. “Get over here.”
Kai steps around to face him, placing a leg between Josh’s open ones. A position where if he were to sit, he would be balanced right on his thigh. He looks down, watching as Josh peels the backing of the Saniderm and carefully places it on his skin. You recognize the gentle touch he’s using — the same one he’s used on you. His focus on Kai’s lower stomach is locked, brows furrowed in concentration while being mindful of his soreness as he presses the clear bandage down, even having to pull Kai’s waistband slightly to get the bottom edge to stick properly. Their proximity makes you blush — a closeness blurring the line of professionalism.
Kai extends a hand to slip his fingers through Josh’s curls again, but it’s far from taunting. He rests it there on the crown of his head, tugging his attention upward by the roots of his hair. You’ve seen that look in his eyes before — you know that look. You just can’t be sure who you’re more envious of, him or Kai. But seeing Josh cast under the same spell excites you, and makes that aching feeling throb between your legs.
You see the harsh swallow in Josh’s throat before Kai lets his hand fall to his side. Josh's eyes quickly dart away and find yours. Realizing you caught the moment, guilt twists his features until you give him a raised wiggle of your brows.
He tries his best to bite back the bashful smile, but you can see that he’s visibly flustered. After clearing his throat, he rushes to clean up the leftover trash from the bandages to keep busy. The tension between them is palpable, thicker than the humid mid-summer air outside. Satisfied with himself, Kai drops his shirt and pulls his phone out of his pocket.
Josh rambles about the aftercare, telling him when he can remove his bandages and how to properly wash as if this was the man’s first tattoo. Kai nods along anyway, walking in your direction toward the center of the room. Josh stands from his chair to follow but quickly pulls at his pants to readjust himself. At first, you think your eyes are deceiving you, but there’s no mistaking the significant bulge he’s desperately trying to hide.
“Oh shit!” Josh calls out, tossing the gloves that he’s peeled off his hands into the trash can. “Before I forget again, would you guys like to come out and see us next weekend?”
Kai answers immediately, “Absolutely.”
However, you don’t answer with nearly the same amount of certainty, asking a question of your own, “Both of us?”
You can feel Kai’s eyes on you in an instant. He’s observant of you —  you’ll give him that. It makes you highly aware of yourself, mindful to not give away too much. It’s not that you don’t want to see Josh, it’s the thought of seeing Kai again. The dynamic between them has been a massive curveball, and you’re scrambling to catch up on processing it all.
“Yeah of course!” Josh doesn’t seem to catch it, sliding onto the arm of the leather couch. He’s distracted, beaming with excitement while trying to act casual. “We finally booked another gig. You’ll come, right?”
There’s that smile of his that you sell you on anything. He’s put you right on the spot. He could’ve just asked you directly if you wanted to come, or even waited until the day knowing full well that you’d show up that evening regardless. “Yeah, I can make it.”
Kai walks around the other side of the couch and picks up a tote you didn’t realize was sitting there. “Same place?”
Josh’s smile grows even bigger. “Hell yeah.”
“Perfect. Just text me the details. Unfortunately, I gotta run. I’m already late for a meeting.” You sense him step behind you to get to Josh and reach in for a hug. As he wraps his arms around him, he kisses him on the cheek. “Thanks for the awesome tat. Always a pleasure.”
“Of course, anytime,” Josh sighs from the praise, holding onto the embrace until Kai pulls away.
The weight of his hand on your shoulder surprises you, making you jump slightly. He squeezes you through your shirt as he leans down over the back of the couch. Your consciousness dives, swimming in his cologne that must be placed perfectly on his pulse points. It’s crisp, cool to the nose with its fresh floral notes that finish off with a comforting woodsy scent — like the summer rainstorms you’ve been romanticizing lately.
He keeps his voice low, so close to your ear that you swear you can feel his lips move against it, “It was definitely a pleasure meeting you.” His chilled touch sends a shiver down your spine as his fingers slide up the soft curve of your neck. “Can’t wait to see you again.”
Your body reacts before your mind can, making your breath feel heavy in your chest. The distant sound of a throat clearing disrupts him, making you both look up to see Jake staring directly at you.
Kai gives you a final squeeze before pushing away from you. “Jake! How could I forget you?”
The ghost of his fingers on your neck haunts you as he crosses the room. You replay the touch, and the words spoken in your ear while your eyes follow him and the unbothered swagger of his stride. Jake is just finishing the last of his meal, keeping his head down like a dog guarding a prized bone. “Leaving so soon?”
Josh, still sitting beside you on the arm of the couch, gives you a worried look, but you both watch as the interaction unfolds together. Kai continues his stroll behind him, daring to walk right into the cage of the beast. Metaphorically poking as if the blatant sarcasm was fuel to his antics. “Aww. You don’t have to put on such a brave face. It’s okay to miss me.”
Jake grumbles, letting his distaste coat the words between his teeth as he gives him a second warning, “The day I never see you again can’t come soon enough.”
Kai stops behind him and sticks out a dramatic bottom lip while slapping his hands to his heart. With Jake’s back to him, it’s a theatrical display meant for Josh and you to see. “Such sweet words coming from you.” The fake pout forms into a mischievous grin as he wraps his arms around Jake’s rigid shoulders. “Bring it in, big guy.”
You watch him take in a heavy breath through flared nostrils to calm himself. “Kai…I swear to god, if you don’t get your fucking hands off me I’ll drag you out of here myself.”
Kai takes the threat as a challenge, nestling his cheek against Jake’s even tighter in an effort to taunt him. “Now you’re getting me excited.” Without a word, Jake’s lip hooks into a snarl just as he tries to grab him, making him jump back out of reach. “I’m going! I’m going!”
Kai, successful at annoying him, skips back with his hands raised in defense, filling the room with a ringing cackle. Once he reaches the top of the stairs, he spins, giving a final goodbye wave before leaving. “It was lovely seeing you again.”
You both give him a nod and wave in return, listening as the echoes of footsteps fade out down the steps, leaving you to sit in the hushed silence between the three of you. Jake’s foul mood becomes more evident than ever as he angrily shoves his earbuds back in without saying a word to either of you.
“Alright, I gotta finish cleaning up and then we can head out of here,” Josh groans as he slides off the couch, paying no mind to his twin. His back must be aching from being hunched over for hours but you swear you can see the lively skip in his step as he makes his way back to his station.
If that fluttery, “butterflies in your stomach” feeling was written in the dictionary, Josh’s picture would be right next to it. He can barely control the smile on his face wanting to break free or the blush pinkening the apples of his cheeks. Wanting to feel the energy up close, you lean down and wrap your arms around his shoulders, interrupting his cleaning. He welcomes it, holding you close with his hands on your arms while he melts into the embrace. You kiss him, feeling the warmth of his flushed skin against your lips. “I can see why you like him.”
Like a hormonal teenager confessing who they’ve been secretly pining over, a bashful smile spreads on his face. “I do not. He’s just a friend,” he defends weakly before the words break apart into laughter.
“Oh please!” you huff, letting your own smile show. You break away, allowing him to spin on his chair so he can face you. “That’s the biggest crush I’ve ever seen with my own eyeballs, Josh.”
Your eyes finally meet as you sit on the cleared-off tattoo table. There’s a glimmer in them as they search the thoughts behind yours. You can’t deny that this is new for both of you, but he’s still cautious about how to approach it. He scooches toward you, bringing himself between your bent knees. He rubs his thumb across your kneecap and starts to trace patterns across the denim.“Yeah…well, a crush that doesn’t really mean anything.”
You don’t need to ask to know what his apprehension is about. He doesn’t want to spark the same jealousy in you again after what happened that one day with the blonde. As much as you can admittedly say it wasn’t your proudest moment, there’s more security in whatever this is between you now than there was at that time. The attraction between them seems genuine, and you’d be lying if you didn’t feel it with Kai yourself.
He settles in closer, sliding your ass to the edge so he can fold his arms around your waist. It’s the reassurance you both need. He buries his face into your chest, giving you the attention you’ve been craving all day. If you didn’t have the audience, you’d fall off the table onto his lap and fuck him senseless.
That was another thing.
Jake.
Regardless of the fact he never explicitly had a conversation about being exclusive with only you in a non-hypothetical sense, he is far from approachable about it now. You haven’t been completely oblivious the past few weeks. Women’s names have come across his phone screen and interactions on his social media would hint that he had other situations going on. You didn’t dig, and for good reason.
With your fingers weaved into Josh’s curls, you tip his head back for a kiss. It feels good, sweet, and vulnerable with the bite of his mint hitting your tongue. As soon as you pull away, he lets out a dreamy sigh, “Besides, I’m perfectly happy with you.’
“Is that so?” You hum. His response only comes out as a groan from you lightly scratching his scalp, causing him to practically purr in your hands. “I dunno…He is pretty cute.”
His eyes flutter open from your words, and he bites into the flesh of his bottom lip. “Sounds like you’re the one with a crush, baby.”
Tumblr media
The Twisted Cherry is everything one could expect from a local dive bar. Tucked away at a corner on the east side of downtown, the popular spot is unrecognizable in the daylight hours. Hidden in plain sight until the sun starts to set and its neon lights buzz to life. Tonight, it’s bustling with activity — humming with drunken chatter and young adults pouring in and weaving their way through the tiny entrance. After paying a small cover fee to the doorman, you meander your way through the small crowd that’s starting to form. A combination of sweat, a hundred different perfumes, and the mustiness of the historic building hangs in the dense air.
It’s difficult to see clearly in the dark with the hazy red bulbs acting as the only lighting throughout the place, but you’re able to find the bar easily. The music playing over the speakers is a relief knowing that the live show hasn’t started yet. You glance at your phone to check the time and slide it back into your purse while you wait for a bartender to notice you. With a secured hand on the waxed, wooden surface grounding you, you scan over the heads and spot the small stage near the back. You keep an eye out for Josh but quickly recognize Danny checking the equipment on stage.
You feel a set of fingers brush against the back of your arm, and before you can scold the stranger grabbing you from behind, a voice greets you, “Hey there. It’s nice to see you again.”
Kai steps into your view and stands before you. It’s not that you’re surprised that he’s here because he was also invited, it’s that you’re not sure how to feel about him being here. You’re attracted to him, thinking about him more than you ever should. An attraction that had you searching for his content on the internet one lonely night this past week.
That smile of his — a perfectly white set of teeth with a pair of canines just a bit sharper than the average person. You imagine how it would feel to have them sink into your skin before a sloppy kiss. That fluttery feeling of excitement and throbbing need for more comes with a wash of guilt.  You’re here for Josh, not him.
“Oh, hi,” you respond in a much softer voice than you intend, and it gets drowned out by the music so much you wonder if he heard you at all. Your movements are stiff and awkward while that nagging bead of sweat drips lower down your back.
You feel his looming eyes on you as he leans an elbow into the bar and takes a sip of his drink. He’s reading you, studying every little mannerism and nervous glance of your eyes trying to look at anything else but him.
From what you noticed so far, he looks good. He’s swapped the t-shirt he wore the last time you saw him for a solid black, long-sleeve button-down that’s rolled just below the elbows. It’s oversized, with linen-like fabric draping loosely from his slender frame that’s tucked into his dark-wash baggy jeans. Since you can’t hold eye contact to save your life, your gaze has drifted down to the massive rips in the denim on both of his knees.
“What are you doing here?” The question comes out cold, dry, and sharp. It’s accusatory, and you’re not exactly why it came out that way.
He forces out a dry laugh, and stands a step closer into your personal space, pulling your line of sight that has been fused to black leather boots up to the layered necklaces wrapped around his throat. One has a thin silver chain with a small heart-shaped locket. The other is a thicker chain of the same metal with prongs to resemble barbs on a wire fence. He pulls in a breath and releases a deep sigh, “Well, I’m here to see Josh. But what about you? Why are you here?”
He knows why. He’s playing — dangling that little toy mouse in front of you until you finally decide to snatch it. He’s done a wonderful job at leaving that trail of breadcrumbs to see if you’re curious enough about his intentions to follow them. Deep down you know if you were to take him by the hand and lead him to the bathroom, he’d be more than happy to fuck your brains out in one of the filthy stalls.
If not— if he was truly here for Josh only — he’s the biggest tease you’ve ever met. You’re smart enough to know that if he wanted Josh for himself, he wouldn’t have bothered approaching you at all.
You still shift on your feet to balance the uneasiness as the conflicting feelings stir inside you. It’s like he’s ripped the wires out of your brain and crossed them. “Yeah, me too.”
He reaches out and pops the bubble you’ve tried to form around yourself by touching your arm once more — another gentle graze of his cool fingers. “You okay? You’re kind of making me anxious.”
The touch is innocent enough, meant purely as a physical check-in, but it doesn’t fail to send a shock of electricity through you. You try to hold back your body’s physical reaction, but there’s no doubt he caught it. It’s enough to make you look up and meet his gaze. “Yeah, I’m okay. Sorry.”
Even in the crowded, dark bar, his smile reaches his light eyes, stealing every bit of your attention. “Don’t be. Want a drink?”
“Sure, but I can get—” He interrupts you with a raise of his hand to the bartender, gesturing that he’d like two more of the same drink that’s currently in his hand.
“You didn’t have to…” you trail off.
He lifts his dark brow at you. “Would you like someone else to buy you drinks tonight? Josh seems a little busy.”
You stare at him, shooting him a stubborn glare. “…No.”
He huffs a laugh, stirring the ice melting away in the bottom of his glass. “Okay, then don’t be like that.”
“Like what?”
A smirk plays on his lips before he says, “A people pleaser.”
“I am not,” you scoff, offended by his attempt to psychoanalyze you. You could lay into him, give him an ear-full, and storm your way out of here — maybe even throw what’s left of his drink in his face for dramatic effect. But you both know that’s not what you want.
He props an elbow back on the bar again and tongues the silver rings pierced through each side of his bottom lip — a similar oral fixation to Josh’s tongue piercing. “You’re too worried about what I think.”
“What if I didn’t want you to assume anything?” You’re quick to fire back, but your confidence is shaky at best, and he can see right through your stubbornness.
Those intense green eyes scan down the length of you while the chewed cocktail straw dances across his bottom lip. If you really were a dove — a helpless bird with fluttering wings upon the ground — he was the black cat lurking in the brush ready to pounce.
The bartender comes up from behind him and slides two cocktails across the bar between you. He takes one and offers it to you. “So you’re accusing me of being presumptuous?”
You take the drink from his hand, watching as he grabs the lone cherry half-buried in the ice from his glass and pops it into his mouth before taking the new drink waiting for him.
You let his question hang in the air by taking a sip of your drink. Based on the distinct, nutty almond flavor and tartness of lemon, you guess it’s the bar’s spin on an amaretto sour. A thought crosses your mind, making you laugh, “Why do I feel like you’re the type that can tie a knot in a cherry stem?”
He chuckles, amused by your sudden change of subject, “Isn’t that a bit cliche?”
“If you can’t do it, just say that,” you challenge, sucking down another large sip of your drink.
He plays along, taking the bright maraschino cherry sitting pretty next to the orange slice garnish on the rim. He plucks the syrup-marinated fruit, savoring the saccharine juice before laying the bare stem across his outstretched tongue. For a moment, you forget the fact you’re not alone, while also realizing that he’s showing off now. Keeping his eyes fixed on yours, he rolls it around in his closed mouth for about thirty seconds until the end of the stem pops out from his lips. They spread into that same cocky grin you’ve seen from him before. With it wedged between his teeth, he reaches up and tightens the loose knot with a pull of his inked fingers.
Checkmate.
You’re stunned into silence — no other moves left in your arsenal. He seals your fate, kicking your queen off the board with the gift of the perfect knot as he leans in close. Drunk off the victory, he croons softly against your ear, “Any more tests for me?”
If you had more alcohol in your system, you might’ve thrown yourself at him, but he steps away from you, disappearing into the crowd centered around the tiny stage. The preset music that’s been fades out, signaling the round of cheers and clapping from everyone around you. You look around to find the reason for the commotion and see Josh, Jake, and Sam step out onto the platform.
You shuffle through to get closer, eventually spotting Kai standing by himself. He gives you a smile when you approach, but Josh’s muffled voice coming through the microphone cuts in before either of you has the chance to say anything.
“Hello, hello,” he mumbles, tapping the top of the microphone as he paces the front of the stage. You’re not sure what you expected from him, but the last thing on your mind was the pair of black leather pants he’s wearing, riding so low on his hips that you can see the tip of the leaf of his tattooed cherries poking above the waistband. They’re incredibly tight to his body in all the right places — leaving nothing to the collective imagination. The black, short-sleeved blouse is not any more conservative, left completely unbuttoned to reveal the collection of tattoos covering his torso. You can’t lie that seeing him up there, being the focus of everyone’s attention feels surreal.
He downs the rest of his drink to shake off the remaining nerves and places it somewhere out of sight. “Hope everyone is having a lovely night.”
It earns a few shouts and whistles, but your gaze follows Jake, dressed in a pair of dark jeans and a t-shirt. He’s busy fiddling with the guitar hanging from his shoulders. You’ve noticed the cherry-finish SG propped up in the corner of his room but had yet to see him with it until now. He plays a few notes, doing any last-minute tuning while the rest of the guys get into position.
While Danny gets ready behind the drum kit, Josh continues, whipping the microphone cord in his hand as goes, “Make sure to get your necessary refreshments. You all know the drill by now. Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em…and uh…get ready for some rock n’ roll.”
Josh’s face lights up the second he spots you standing next to Kai, smiling so wide it stretches from ear to ear. You wave at him, getting a wink in return. Jake on the other hand, only gives you a single nod before dropping his line of sight back to the guitar in his hands. Sam, with a bass hanging from the thick strap around his back, has been busy chatting with a few girls in the front row. Danny sets the count, and within seconds, the cramped space erupts on his mark.
Josh’s vocals rip through the dense air of the dive bar. You know your mouth has dropped open and your eyes have widened in shock. It takes far longer than you’d like to admit, but you’re able to recognize the cover as “White Room” by Cream.
In the white room with black curtains near the station
Black roof country, no gold pavements, tired sterlings
His voice is gritty, raw and powerful. There’s a certain whine to it that lives in your chest with every breath you take — so loud it rings in your ears and makes the hairs on your arms stand on end. He possesses the modest stage with a charisma that’s completely new to you. He’s far more confident than you’ll ever be, existing through the music and letting it course through his body with the sways of his head to the rhythmic bounce of his foot. Within minutes, his body starts to glisten with a sheen of sweat, causing your eye to catch the exposed golden bar pierced through his navel.
For a moment, you forget that you’re sleeping with him, that every part of his gyrating body has been explored by you — by your tongue. He seems like an entirely new man, dripping with unadulterated eroticism and ego.
Never wanting his brother to take all the attention, Jake steps in to deliver his solo. His nimble fingers move across the frets with lightning speed, showcasing another level of talent and dexterity that you didn’t know he had. Josh is more than happy to let him take the limelight, moving aside to gladly accept a shot of clear liquor being offered to him by someone in the crowd.
When you pictured what this might be in your head, you imagined something akin to a local karaoke night. You hadn’t expected them to actually be this good.
As the first song fades out, they roll into the next one without stopping. Some songs you can pick out, some you don’t. You’re simply captivated by the performance, absorbing all of their forty-five-minute set without moving from your spot once.
One thing you couldn’t help but notice was Jake actively trying to ignore you. Other than a few fleeting glances in your direction, his attention stayed on his guitar or the women shouting at him in the first row. Instead of giving you those smiles, he gave them away, even stripping from his drenched t-shirt to show off the tattoos on his chest and back. If you were here alone, his behavior might’ve bothered you more than it does. Kai’s presence smothers it, even if it might be the reason it sparked it in the first place.
After the guys finish up their last song, Kai nudges you with an elbow and leads the way, clearing a path through the crowd back to the bar with you in tow. The short walk feels like a blur like you’re the one running on adrenaline. Your body buzzes with so much excitement that you hardly notice the fact he’s already ordered another round.
“Wow,” you breathe.
He reaches out and holds your wrist, grounding you to him as he leans back against the bar. “First time seeing them play?”
“Yeah.” You nod, setting your empty glass on the polished bar top.
He’s looking past you, right at Josh still talking to a few people near the stage. “It’s definitely an experience.”
You note the way he looks at him, studying all the same things you did minutes ago. Since it's been eating away at you for almost two weeks, you feel compelled to ask yourself, “So are you and Josh friends with benefits?”
He shakes his head and smirks in response to the question, making you feel as though it was a stupid one to ask. “Who told you that?”
“Jake,” you confess.
“Hmm…and do you always take Jake’s word on everything?” His striking eyes pierce right through you. Now inches away, you’re able to see all the details up close. The tattoo on his right cheek that says “lover”, the faint freckles that paint his nose, and the little scar that goes through his left brow.
“Do I have a reason not to?”
His stare softens and shifts to Josh before flicking his eyes back over to you. “I guess that’s for you to find out. But no, Josh and I aren’t friends with benefits.”
You wonder how Jake would get the idea because you don’t think of him as the type to lie about something like that. “You haven’t done anything at all?”
His fingers skate across your forearms resting on the edge of the bar. “You’re a curious one,” he laughs, meeting your gaze, searching both of your eyes until he drops his own to your lips, letting them linger there. You’re hypnotized by his eyes, caught up in the lustful thoughts that have invaded your mind. “Aside from a few drunken makeouts that I’m sure he doesn’t even remember now, no.”
You try to bring his words to life in your head, imagining what that might have looked like — what it would be like to kiss him yourself. “Oh…okay.”
“Look.” He squeezes your hand before letting go to grab the drinks sitting on the bar. “I hope you know that you have him so tightly wrapped around your finger, and from what I see, he’d do anything to make you happy.” He lifts a shot you didn’t order, gesturing for you to take it. “You’re the one calling the shots here, so start acting like it.”
Before you can even think about what he said, he clinks his shot glass against yours, pressuring you to throw back the clear liquor into your mouth. You can tell its vodka right away by how it burns all the way down your throat.
You cough through that pain, “What, are you trying to get drunk?”
He laughs at your expense, chasing his shot with another sip of his new drink. Your judgment is becoming clouded, all inhibitions dissolving away by the second in his presence. You look over to Josh to see him slowly making his way over to you with each conversation he’s getting pulled into.
“What are you so worried about, kitten?” The added feline quality of his voice rasps against your ear, making you tremble in his loose hold. “How badly you want to fuck me or is it how much he wants to?”
You’re fully pressed against him now, smelling the scent of his aftershave and feeling the warmth of his skin through his shirt.  He’s good at leaving you speechless, as a suitable answer for him evades you. The temptation to touch him, to kiss him becomes unbearable — your self-control reduced to a mere thread. Something makes his body tense up for the first time, and he pulls away enough to look down at you. “Is there a reason why Jake is looking at me like he wants to murder me?”
You turn, breaking away from him to look behind you. You search the groups, spotting Jake standing next to Danny and Sam as he nurses a glass of amber liquid, presumably whiskey. The set brows and jaw clench are visible even at this distance. He’s avoiding eye-contact with you, giving away that he’s angry with you. “Oh…uhm,” you stammer over yourself, struggling to find a place to start. “Well…”
Kai’s brows shoot up but his shoulders fall in disbelief now that the pieces start to fit together. “You’re fucking kidding me,” he breathes, taking another sip of his drink. Something shifts as the gears turn in his head, and a devilish grin reveals itself over the lip of his glass. What would scare away more people only seems to make him double down, as if he thrives off the pure chaos. “Let’s get messy then.”
“Fucking finally.” You hear Josh heavy groan beside you. “I never thought I would escape.” He takes a second to collect himself now that he’s made it to the bar. “Fuck, I’m so glad you both could come.”
“You didn’t tell me you could sing like that,” you gush, giving him a playful shove to his shoulder, which only makes him propel himself closer to you.
“Maybe I wanted it to be a surprise.” He kisses you — heavy, hot and brimming with lust. He’s impatient, beyond pent up, licking into your mouth while he ruts his hardening length against your hip. “Being on that stage gets me so fucking horny, baby. I don’t think I can wait to fuck you later.” His sinful confessions being mumbled into your skin is enough to drive you feral.
If the state of your underwear was any indication of how you’re feeling — you need him more than anything you’ve needed before.
He shows enough restraint to acknowledge Kai standing beside you. “Looks like you’re making a new friend though.”
You glance up at him to see that he’s more than content sipping away at his cocktail while the two of you go at it, giving you a side-eye peek. A heat radiates in your chest and blooms up to your face thinking about the things he had said to you minutes ago, making you admit, “We’ve gotten to know each other a little.”
Josh’s curious eyes bounce between you before landing on Kai. “You’re not making me a stranger, are you?”
Kai sets his glass down and signals for another round. Those siren eyes of his find Josh’s while he lures him in with a silken voice, “I don’t think it would take much to get reacquainted.”
The sexual tension between them reaches its threshold, breaking apart from a single look. Acting on a surge of bravery, Josh takes the leap of faith you’ve yet to make. He leans forward and crashes his lips into Kai’s before he’s given the chance to react. It takes him a second to catch up with Josh’s unrestricted fervor, but quickly regains his footing. After bringing a hand to cradle the side of his face, Kai successfully suppresses that hunger enough to slow him down to be present. You watch as their lips part, seeing the glint of Josh’s piercing as his tongue slips into Kai’s mouth.
His ringed fingers dive into Josh’s sweaty hair, tugging him by the roots to make him whimper. To witness him being turned into a moaning mess makes you ache terribly. He’s teasing Josh with a taste to remember, and is now pulling away to keep him chasing for it.
Josh licks at his swelling bottom lip to savor what was left there. He suddenly plummets back to Earth, remembering where he is and that you’re still standing here beside him. “Oh shit… I’m sorry—“
“Don’t be,” you giggle, interrupting his frantic apology. “I’ve been wanting to do that all night.”
It was supposed to be a light-hearted joke to add levity to the moment. But the next thing you feel is Kai’s hand wrapping around your neck. “Let’s make it even, then.”
You have thought about this very moment over and over again after that night at the shop. The way his lips would feel, how they would taste, how he would touch you. It’s a forbidden desire, more so than Jake has ever felt. You’re not supposed to have another man make you feel like this.
His lips connect with a controlled grace, the pad of his thumb grazing along your jawline to ease you in. You relinquish control, clutching onto the fabric of his shirt while you memorize the cold sensation of the silver rings slipping across your lip as the kiss deepens. He baits you with a teasing flick of his tongue, making you chase it back into the sweetness of his mouth.
Before you know it, it’s all over.
“Oh my fucking god, that was so hot,” Josh groans. His restlessness breaks the moment for you to see him tossing back one of the shots that was ordered.
You’ve been blushing so hard that your face has started  to break out in a sweat, but Kai is still holding you by the chin, peering down at you through obsidian lashes. He bites down on his bottom lip, creating little impressions in the wet flesh. “What do you think? Should we get outta here, kitten?”
All three of you stumble out of the bar onto the sidewalk after paying the tap, realizing you’ve had a bit more to drink than you expected to. Your chest feels tight, but in that way when you know something is about to happen. Josh, on the other hand, is vibrating with nervous energy so much his hands have started to shake as he pulls out the pack of cigarettes from his pocket.
“Uber will be here in 5 minutes,” Kai announces, noticing Josh drunkenly struggle to light the end of his cigarette. You try to find another lighter from the depths of your purse, but Kai digs his own from his pocket to help him. It’s sensual — the way he watches him pull in a slow drag so he can pluck the burning cigarette from between his fingers.
Before Josh can exhale, Kai captures his lips in a smokey kiss. He nips at his bottom lip, thriving on the way he’s left Josh breathless and confused as he takes in a drag of his own. He then looks at you with a raised brow, silently asking you if you want one as well. You nod, eagerly closing the distance, stepping into his arms so he can hold your chin steady. You open your lips for him, allowing him to blow a gentle stream of smoke past them before sealing it with a kiss.
You hear Josh giggle in the background, humming with energy he can no longer contain, “You two are trying to fucking kill me.”

If you are interested...
Okay - I'm going to put this out there. I have a few things I need to work on, but this is my baby, my passion for the past seven months, and I'm putting the finishing touches on the ending now. When I begin posting this, it will be a fully realized, and complete story, so no hiccups, no breaks, no lull in installments. It is a long, chapter fiction with multiple povs from OC's and Jake, although all four GVF members are in this story.
Summary: The Kiszka/Wagner Company is relatively new to the community of Kingsford. Cora is seeking for a way out of certain starvation and ruin for her family when she gains employment under the new ownership of the mercantile and general stores. Rumors of shady business practices of her new employers aside, she is certain that she is on a path that will see her family out of debt and into a better light.
I hope someone is interested in this. The story kind of gripped me and wouldn't let go. I have to say thank you to @whitesuitjake for the Jake photo edit - even though you're not here right now, Addy, you helped me realize my Jake for the story visually. And I have to say thank you to @lvnterninthenight for putting your love, support and eyes to this as I've gone through the process. Thank you, Bobbie - I love you. And one more - @gardensgatedaisy - Britt, you've seen my madness over this beast of an epic and have listen to me whine, cry and fume over it from the start. Thank you my friend for letting my crazy ooze out at times. Love you.

Just as I offered, here’s a little sneak peak into the Pirate!Jake fic 🥰
••••
“If I may ask, why are you still lingering, princess?”
The name falling of his tongue was like a drug. The most addictive drug one could find. Somehow he made the most flattering and important name, sound so degrading.
You stood frozen in place for a few moments too long, struggling to find a genuine reason for staying around - of which you did not have.
He hummed to himself, head tilting back slightly, “Just as I thought. You haven’t any good reason.”
You opened your mouth to attempt some sort of protest, once again falling short.
“If I may, your majesty,” Jake stood to his feet and sauntered to the door. “You are quite the gem. So exquisite and beautiful. Too bad you are too feisty and disobedient for my liking.”
Your whole body began to boil with various emotions; you were flustered, angry and immensely intrigued by him. He was setting you ablaze in a foul, but irresistible way.
“And… you are much too disrespectful for my taste,” you seethed, faltering for a moment so short, you hoped it went unnoticed. “Speaking to royalty in such a despicable manner…”
“And yet, the royalty herself, seems to be enjoying it.” Jake grinned wickedly.
You couldn’t tell if it was your body’s attempt to be intimidating, or seeking closer proximity to Jake. But without thinking too deeply about it, you stepped forward, “What makes you believe for a second that I am enjoying any of this?”
“Many reasons, Princess…” Jake began, speaking low and hushed. “You’ve taken at the very least five steps closer to this door. You could have left the second your… ‘accomplice’ dropped me in here.”
“You are terribly-“
“-Quiet, Princess. I don’t take well to being interrupted.” Jake cut you off abruptly, holding up a single finger that you couldn’t tear your eyes away from. “I would almost say you enjoy being spoken to this way, don’t you? Everyone gets tiresome with constantly hearing praises… And I’m sure praise is all you know, is it not?”
“Perhaps.” The word left your mouth bitter and clipped. He was very much right.
“Mhm, as I thought.” Jake gripped the bars of the door above his head, leaning forward as far as he could go. “You know… I could show you so much more. Make you feel so much more.”
“And what could you possibly be hinting at with such words, Jacob?” you questioned, sounding much more breathy than you had intended.
“If only I had the keys to open this-“ he gestured to the door, the only thing keeping the two of you apart. “-I could show much better than I could ever tell you, your majesty.”
“Never in a million years would I consider letting you out,” you scoffed, shoving the key that now was damp from your sweating hands, back into your pocket.
“Who said anything about letting me go?” Jake questioned seriously. “Just join me. You have the key to leave whenever you so please.”
“And… if I do choose to join you?” You narrowed your eyes, taking in his blown out pupils and all the little details surrounding them.
“Then I shall do just as I have said and show you things you will never forget.” Jake promised lowly, leaning in closer. “Things you will never want to forget,” he added.
Your faces were almost as close as they could get, you could feel the warmth of his breath as he spoke.
Without once looking away from him, you hastily retrieved the key from your pocket and unlocked the door.
Jake stepped back, allowing you proper space to slide the door open just enough to squeeze your body through and get into the cell with him.
You turned around and closed the door, closing your eyes for a split second in attempts to slow your pounding heart and process what you had just done.
As you turned back to face Jake, he immediately outstretched his hand. and bowed before you ever-so-slightly.
Hesitantly, you placed your shaking, sweating hand in his and he brought it up to his lips, “‘Tis quite the pleasure, Princess.”
Jake placed the first kiss to the top of your hand, holding your stunned gaze. He shifted his hold up to your wrist, his lips following and placing another kiss higher up.
He continued the same actions, working his kisses up your arm, until his mouth reached your shoulder and his face was only inches from yours.
Slowly, he backed you up until you could feel the uncomfortable firmness of metal bars against your back.
“You are truly quite the brave one for joining me.” Jake whispered against your ear. “Just to make things even, I plan to tease you until you’re begging and pleading for my mercy.”

It was a rather gloomy night, rain was heavily falling down onto the world, and you were stuck staring out the window of your room, though you were unable to see anything. It was pitch black out, however, you enjoyed the way the raindrops fell on the glass.
You were hoping Jake would be arriving soon, as he said he would in his letter that you received two days ago. He has been so busy with his father and keeping up with things, being the son of the King and all, the Prince to inherit the land when the time comes.
But things weren’t exactly looking up for the kingdom. Tensions were high and everyone in town was talking about being on the brink of war. You hoped that wasn’t true, but you knew your parents were prepared for anything, as they are allies of the royal family.
Just as you had hoped, a knock came on your door, your handmaiden letting you know Jake was here to see you. In an instant, you ran out of your room, politely running past her, and down the massive stairs that you two have spent so many nights talking on.
Your parents adored Jake. They knew it would be better to marry someone more like an aristocrat, but they could see how much the man cared for you and how much effort he made to just visit you; they obviously know of all the letters he sends you any time he can.
It was only a matter of time before your parents got together with the king’s people to talk of a marriage between you two. Sure, it wasn’t entirely viable, but allies are allies; the king knows your family are good people, what’s the hurt in letting their son marry their daughter?
As you finally make your way to the grand entrance of the castle, you see Jake pacing back and forth in front of the door. He appeared to be soaked, but you were sure that he owns horse-drawn carriages that are covered.
He spots you and races towards you a little. You crash into his arms and his wrap tightly around you.
“Oh, how I’ve missed you,” he whispers into your neck, his eyes shut tightly as he takes in everything. The feel of you in his arms, the scent of his favorite perfume you always wear just for him, how your skin feels under his fingertips, and the way your hair brushes against his face.
“I’ve missed you too, Jake. You stay away for far too long, it’s starting to feel like you don’t want to visit anymore,” you try and lightly joke, but when you pull away, you notice Jake’s expression has fallen.
“Um, I fear I come with bad news, my dear.” Jake rubs his hands together nervously after letting you go, stepping back to continue pacing. “War has finally broken out and we need every set of hands we can get.”
“Oh,” you mumble, toying with your hands. Your heart starts to race as he tries and gets the courage to get his words out. He messes with the sword on his hip, one of his many nervous habits you’ve picked up on over the year.
“And I’m going to fight with them,” he says turning to you. There were clearly tears in his eyes, this was just as hard for him as it was for you.
“But Jake, what about-”
“I have no choice, and frankly, there is no other choice I would make, even if I wasn’t being practically forced to. This is the kingdom that I am going to rule one day. The people should see that their future king is going to fight to protect them.”
He storms out of the castle and into the rain. That’s when you notice his beautiful white horse standing, tied to the fence, waiting for Jake to return. You follow him like a lost puppy, terrified of what was to come in the future.
“You can’t…I’ve heard the stories of what happens to men at war, I don’t want you going through that, and what if you are injured, what if you are killed?!”
“Then I die for my people! I have served them well and they will know that their prince fought for them the very last second, up until my last breath.”
Your own tears had finally fallen from your eyes and they were mixing with the rain dropping onto your face. Both yours and Jake’s hair started to stick to your skin, and your dress was soaked within just a few seconds of being outside.
“But what about me? What am I supposed to do without the man I love? The man I was going to marry?!” You were screaming at him, but you didn’t care. You needed to direct your anger somewhere, and Jake just happened to be that person.
“You’ll find someone else. If I’m destined to die on this battlefield, you are destined to find a man who will provide you with a life as good as I lived. I promise you that.” You shake your head at his last comment.
“Promise me you’ll come back to me? Promise me you’ll keep yourself safe, for you, your family, your people, and especially for me?”
Jake grabs you once more, his hands wrapping around your waist, bringing you as close to his body as he can.
“I promise that if I make it out alive, you are the first person I am going to see. Forget my family, my father, everyone. If I somehow survive, I am going to be on your doorstep, with you in my arms.”
A choked sob makes its way past your lips, and Jake attempts to wipe your tears away, but it’s no use, as he can’t really tell what are tear drops versus rain drops. He moves his hands up to hold your face in his hands, and kisses you as passionately as he can.
He was just as much of a mess as you were. He didn’t want to do this, he wanted to marry you, more than anything in the world; this is just the absolute most unfortunate timing. But this was something he had to do.
Pulling back, he makes a quick getaway and mounts the horse, but before he rides off into the dark and stormy night, you run right over to him, resting your hands on his thigh.
“Please don’t go, Jake,” you whimper, sniffling a little, in part of the chilly weather the rain has brought. Jake sighs softly and caresses your cheek once more.
He leans down and kisses you again, softly this time, his lips ghosting over yours after it ends.
“I have to, my love. But just know, you are the one that’s going to be getting me through this battle.”
He grabs onto your hand, and slowly, the horse rides away, and soon, he drops your hand, and you already miss the warmth of his skin. Jake rides off, disappearing very quickly, and everything finally sets in
That could have been the last time you saw Jake. Or rather his regular self.
A voice calls for you from behind, and as you turn around, you see your handmaiden, Alice, standing at the large entrance doors. You trudge back slowly, the weight of your dress dragging you down a little.
Stepping inside, Alice is asking you tons of questions, but you don’t answer any of them, too numb from the idea that Jake is gone, and has the possibility of never returning.
As the weeks go by, every day, you wonder what Jake is doing. If he’s okay, if he’s gotten hurt, how many battles he’s partaken in, or worse, if he’s dead somewhere; that was a frequent nightmare of yours ever since he left.
You waited every day to see if you got a letter from him, and nothing came. Most of your days were spent alone, in your room, journaling your thoughts and dreams, or even little thoughts you had for Jake, even addressing some entries to him directly, like you were writing him a letter.
It helped you some days, living in the alternate reality that everything was okay, and you were writing him like normal. But this circumstance was horrifying. And you were ready for it to be over.
Your parents tried inviting you to events like dinners and balls to get your mind off of things, but you were never up for it. You knew they were wanting you to find a husband at these events, and you were not going to even look at another man until you knew what Jake’s status was.
An agonizing two months later, you are sitting in the spot you sit in every day, in the drawing room, staring out the window to the garden. However, it had turned to night by now, and you had been staring out the window, not really focusing on anything but your thoughts.
A soft knock sounds on the door, interrupting you, and making you jump.
“Someone is here for you,” Alice says softly, trying to hide the smile on her face. Though you don’t notice it, keeping your eyes glued to the floor as you head out of the room and down the staircase.
You are slow with your movements, as there wasn’t a ton of energy in your body recently. Every day felt like a year, wondering if Jake was going to return or if someone was going to show up with a letter informing you of his death.
But as you get to the bottom of the stairs, prepared to deal with the worst news possible, a familiar laugh echos in the entryway.
“I figured you’d be much more excited to see me,” Jake’s usually cheerful voice was now slightly dull, filled with exhaustion.
Your head shoots up and a gasp leaves your body, and within seconds, you are hurling yourself to Jake and into his arms. He catches you with ease, laughing loudly, a huge smile on his face.
You sob loudly into his neck, and he just holds you tight, beginning to weep as well.
“I thought about you every single day,” he cries out, his hand coming up to hold the back of your head. “You got me through this war. I love you.”
“I l-love you too, Jake,” you manage to get out through your sobs. Lifting your head, you crash your lips against his, your hands holding his face as he’s set you back down, so you are grounded a little bit better.
The kiss lasts for what seems to be forever, neither one of you ready to pull away just yet. Eventually, though, your knees buckle and you start to fall to the floor, and Jake just laughs, taking a seat with you in his lap.
You straddle his lap and rest your hands on his chest to stabilize yourself some. You go back to kissing him and his hands never leave your body. He keeps them on your waist for a bit before trailing them up and down your back, feeling your curves, taking the feel of you in again after being deprived for two months.
When you finally break away to catch your breath, you take a moment to admire Jake, who has changed some. His hair was longer, and way more tangled that it used to be when he was able to keep up with it.
A mustache had grown on his upper lip, as well as a small patch of hair on his chin. It suited him well, and you planned on telling him you didn’t want him to shave just yet. But one thing catches your eye.
A scar adorns the apple of his right cheek, and a frown appears on your face. He notices this, especially when you reach up to run your finger along the permanently raised skin.
“I’m alright, love,” he whispers, grabbing your hand and bringing it away from his face. You figured it was difficult for him to relive that, and your face heats up with embarrassment.
“Are you?” You whisper. The look in his eyes tells you he’s seen some horrible things, but you didn’t want to push that out of him if he wasn’t ready to talk.
“I…I will be,” he replies, gulping. You nod and drop the topic, moving your hands down to rest on his neck.
“But you’re alive,” you say, mainly to yourself. Jake smiles, a sight that you’ve longed to see, and your heart flutters.
“I am. And I am for good. My father says my duties as a soldier are over, and I should focus on my duties as Prince and helping with the logistics rather than physical aspect of war.”
“I’m so glad,” you sigh out in relief. He wraps his arms around you again, very tightly, nuzzling his nose in your neck.
“You are staying with me for the next few days, right?” You ask. He nods against your shoulder, a few more tears spilling out.
“I’m not leaving, I promise. I’m never leaving you again.”
After sitting there for a little while longer, you two finally move up to your bedroom, but you have other ideas. You ask Alice to draw a bath, and thankfully she does, especially after seeing how dirty Jake appeared and the look on your face of just wanting to care for him.
You carefully help him into the tub and he settles into the lukewarm water. He didn’t care if it was hot or cold, he was glad to finally get and feel clean.
You help scrub his body, ridding the dirt that was caked on in some places. But you are gentle with him, noticing some cuts and scrapes were still healing, making sure to not scrub at those with the sponge.
You also take notice of the scars covering his body, some rather large and red, others faded but still visible due to it being so raised.
Neither of you say anything as you continue, moving on to wash his hair, and attempting to comb through the knots. Thankfully, Jake was hard-headed, so you tugging in some spots wasn’t the worst, but you still felt bad, given his condition.
However, he told you silently that you weren’t doing anything wrong, with the hums of approval sounding from his throat and the fond look in his eyes every time you made eye contact.
Once you finished, you allowed him to dry off and get dressed in the items of clothing that were secretly left over for him a year ago, when you first started seeing one another.
It was a rather funny story. You two had met in town, when he was trying to escape some women chasing him. He ran into you and pulled you into some stables to throw the women off, and since then, you began sneaking around. He would come visit you late at night, and with the help of Alice, a relationship began to blossom early on.
But that was until your parents and his parents threw a ball and ‘introduced’ you to each other. So, through laughter, you and Jake had to act like you didn’t know one another, that you hadn’t kissed many times, and that he hasn’t seen you naked, on top of him.
In that moment, under the eyes of your parents, he placed a kiss on the back of your hand ever so delicately, so innocently compared to the previous night, where he fucked you so hard you were seeing stars; though the look in his eyes when he gazed up at you, your gloved hand in his as he kissed the material, said everything, and you had to keep yourself from breaking into a smile.
Neither of your parents have yet to know that you met each other prior to that, but it’s not really something they needed to know to begin with. You were just glad with how things worked out, and now, you were going to be marrying your lover.
After combing through his hair one final time, you settle into your bed, Jake holding you as close as he can to his body, your bare skin pressed against one another, a request from him, which you didn’t mind one bit.
There was nothing sexual about it, at all. You were simply relishing in the fact that he was alive, and he was right here beside you, as well as him basking in your touch, something he dreamed about every day for the past two months.
He didn’t think he would live to see you again, so this was far more intense than he was expecting. But he wouldn’t trade it for anything.
He ends up curling up into your side, and just like you did in the bathroom, you have a clear view of his back, where most of the scars lined, you assume from sword fights and grazes of the blade.
You carefully and softly caress every inch of his body, telling him with your touch how loved he is, and that he’s safe now. You even write out ‘I love you’ with your fingertips along his skin, and he senses this almost immediately.
“I love you, (Y/N), and even though it’s not official, I cannot wait to marry you. The way you care for me, the way you have been so patient with me tonight, how you have consumed my mind for the past year and a half, you are the woman I am meant to be with.”
He raises his head to gaze up at you, a small grin on his lips.
“I love you too, Jake. I don’t know what you saw or went through these past couple months, and you don’t have to tell me, but I am going to be here for you every step of the way. You are my love, and I’m not leaving your side. That’s my promise to you.”
“I kept my promise, now it’s on you to keep yours,” he giggles. You laugh with him and cradle his cheek, your thumb running along his skin, along the scar. This time, he doesn’t shy away.
“I plan on keeping my promise until my last breath, my darling,” you whisper.

Chapter Summary: Rae, Jake, Josh, and Sam find Danny's jacket and bring in reinforcements for extra help.
Words: 3.2k
Warnings: blood/wounds, mentions of death
Notes: Thank you to @infinisonicosm for the fic idea!
-----------------------------------------------------
“SAM!” Jake’s holler made Rae’s shoulders raise to her ears. Sam and Josh had been deep in some kind of intense conversation but, at Jake’s voice, he had their attention. Within seconds, Sam and Josh were by their side.
“Oh my god,” Sam choked out as he grabbed Danny’s jacket from Jake, holding it up to his nose to give a deep inhale. “There’s that smell again.”
Josh stared at the note on the back of the jacket as Sam continued to sniff the inside, completely oblivious to Danny’s cry for help. It seemed like he couldn’t restrain himself, as he pulled the back of the jacket towards him and let his tongue pass over the blood.
“Dude!” Jake scolded Josh. Josh quickly folded his tongue back inside his mouth, his face flushed red.
“I’m hungry,” he tried to explain himself.
“Eat a rat or something, asshat,” Jake spat. “Don’t lick the evidence.”
“Lick the evidence?” Sam’s head cocked to the side as he took a step back from Danny’s jacket. “Huh?”
It seemed mutually agreed that Sam had a right to know about Danny’s message, so Jake silently turned the jacket around for Sam to see. Sam stared blankly at the words for what felt like a lifetime, and then a few fat tears poured from his eyes.
Jake took a strong whiff around the jacket and looked troubled.
“I don’t recognize this smell either, Sam,” he told his younger brother. “But the scent is still strong. Danny must have written this not too long ago.”
Sam took comfort in Jake’s words as he wiped at his eyes and nodded his head. Jake handed the jacket off to Rae to hold and enveloped Sam in a tight hug, just for extra assurance that everything was going to be alright. Josh stood off to the side, just behind Rae, still licking his lips but looking embarrassed by his lack of control. After Sam released from Jake, he pointed at the jacket.
“Where did you find that?”
Jake and Rae pointed down to the small crater Jake had created in the dirt, just a few feet away at the base of a tree that looked to be withering. Sam hurried to it and got down on all fours to inspect the area, sniffing and pawing around the terrain. As he did this, Jake cleared his throat to get Josh’s attention.
“Taste anything weird in that blood, Dracula?”
Josh looked surprised that Jake was willing to talk to him, and then pissed off by the nickname.
“Nothing out of the ordinary,” he spat back at Jake. But then, he thought more about it and seemed to be swishing the aftertaste of the blood around his mouth. “Well,” he started again, “it is a bit clumpier than it should be.”
Rae and Jake shot him disgusted looks, which Josh ignored.
“When the weather drops from hot to cold really fast, the blood thickens to try and regulate a normal body temperature,” he explained. “I usually see this when there’s a cold front to kick off the winter. But I don’t know why that would be happening to Danny, considering it’s still hot as hell out.”
“That’s really weird,” Jake agreed, looking lost in thought. Rae was getting sick and tired of all these moving pieces that didn’t seem to fit together in the slightest. Down at their feet Sam continued to search the area, his face planted into the ground to find more clues.
“That smell,” his voice was muffled, “it’s getting stronger.”
“What was that, Sammy?” Jake called to him. Sam looked back at them, his face caked with dirt.
“The smell on Danny’s jacket is getting stronger down here.”
Jake immediately joined Sam on the ground and shoved his face into the ground. Rae and Josh glued their mouths shut to try and keep any laughs from squeaking through at the strange sight. After a few seconds of looking like an ostrich, Jake sat back up, his face just as dirty as Sam’s, and addressed the group.
“Sam’s right. I need to dig to get closer.”
Sam, Josh, and Rae didn’t need to be instructed to get out of Jake’s way. They stood and watched as Jake moved at inhuman speeds to produce a gaping hole in the wooded floor, extending down nearly five feet. He looked spent from his work, but he managed to climb out, his face scrunched in thought.
“Well?” Josh tried.
“There’s ice down there,” Jake replied.
“Huh,” was all Josh could say. Sam was already in the hole, seeing for himself, and Rae made her way to the edge to peer in as well. Lo and behold, there was a sheet of ice at the bottom, and Sam was slipping around on it while he tried to get a better smell.
Behind her, Jake tucked his sweaty strands of long hair behind his ears and, with a grunt, pulled his soaked shirt off over his head, which earned him a loud groan from Josh.
“Give me a break, Romeo, you’ve got nothing to flaunt.”
“I’m not trying to flaunt,” Jake growled back. “I’m overheating.”
Rae turned to see what the commotion was, and let her eyes land on Jake’s tanned skin for probably a bit too long. He seemed to glisten in the sunlight and, after exerting himself with the hole, his arms were tense, his veins bulging. He made eye contact with Rae for a split second and started to give her a smile, but Rae turned her head the other way. Now didn’t feel like the time or place, especially considering she was holding Sam’s missing friend’s jacket in her hands.
“I can’t break through the ice!” Sam shouted from the hole, sounding frustrated. “It won’t budge at all, but I can tell the smell is stronger down farther.”
“We might need to get some tools,” Jake called down to Sam. “I don’t think there’s much more we can do with what we’ve got right now.”
“Is it really safe to be in town right now though?” Sam’s head popped up so he could look around at everyone.
“I don’t see why not,” Jake shrugged, but Josh cut in.
“No.”
Jake turned fast to study Josh.
“Word got around about us being evicted,” Josh caught Jake up to speed. “The hunters know, and the town leaders are doing nothing to stop them from coming into Frankenmuth to drive us out. Already a few from my nest are missing.”
“For the love of God,” Jake groaned out, wiping his face in disbelief.
“Why don’t we bring our parents out here to show them what we found?” Sam offered. “Maybe they can help us break through the ice and get to Danny so all of this can be sorted out.”
“I don’t know, Sam,” Jake’s voice trailed off. “I’m sure Dad’s got his hands full right now.”
“It might be our only chance to get out of this mess,” Josh told Jake under his breath. “Plus, they’d be safer out here.”
Jake mulled it over.
“My dad will kill me for being around you.”
“Trust me, my mom’s not gonna be happy either, but I think there’s a lot at stake here, and you can afford to get a light scolding from your dad.”
Jake looked like he wanted to protest, but he wound up giving a shrug.
“So, how do we get them out here?”
“We have to brave going into town.”
***
It was agreed upon that someone needed to stay with the hole in the woods, just in case they couldn’t find it when they brought the parents back. It was also firmly agreed that Rae wouldn’t be the one to stay with the hole, since they didn’t know what they were up against in the woods, and Sam wouldn’t stay either since Jake refused to let anything bad happen to him while he was away. Since Josh had to negotiate with his mom, they decided that Rae, Josh, and Sam would head back into town while Jake stayed behind.
“I’ll be fine,” he promised them as they left. “Just don’t take too long, I don’t want to be out here alone in the dark.”
“We have to move fast,” Josh instructed Rae and Sam as they moved out of the dense coverage of trees into more open space, coming closer to the suburban property lines.
“We should get stuff to cover our smell,” Sam piped in. Rae looked at him worried, and he explained, “the hunters have a serious knack for spotting us out. It’s almost like their kind have evolved over the years so they can sniff us out.”
“Here,” Rae offered, giving Josh her backpack, and Sam her flannel that she had stupidly brought for her first day of school, just in case it got cold out. Josh tugged the floral Jansport backpack on and Sam tied Rae’s flannel around his waist without a single argument.
“They should still be at town hall,” Josh shared. “The last I heard they were doing everything they could to convince the mayor to round up the hunters.”
They moved past the last tree in the line marking the entrance to the woods, and Rae stared back at the shaded area with goosebumps prickling across her skin. She didn’t like leaving Jake alone in there. It felt like something bad was going to happen, but she tried to push that bad thought out of her head. She needed to focus on getting through town undetected.
They kept their heads down and, with Josh in the lead, hurried down the residential street leading back into town, right past Rae’s house. She looked up for a brief moment and noted that both of her parents’ cars were in the driveway. Morgan must not have a doctor’s appointment today.
It was startlingly quiet as they trekked farther into town, especially considering it was the first day of school. But Rae understood why the streets were so still: based on everything she had learned from Jake, Josh, and Sam, she could only assume there were a decent number of supernatural residents in town. They must have all been hiding, terrified out of their mind, or fighting to save their kind at city hall.
The latter, as it turned out, was where almost everyone was. Josh, Sam, and Rae were shocked by an overflow of people crammed into the main hallway of the city hall, leading to the mayor’s office. A few people greeted Josh and Sam with melancholy half waves, and others stared Rae down, trying to figure out what she was. The sheer number of people was overwhelming, but it became abundantly clear that Josh and Sam both held some kind of power amongst the werewolves and vampires, since the people parted like the Red Sea, telling them their parents were up ahead.
They squeezed their way through the doorway and Rae felt her stomach flip flop when a group of serious and cold looking adults who were speaking with the mayor behind his desk turned to face them.
“Sam?” a bald man on the shorter side said in surprise.
“Josh?” a woman equally on the shorter side with graying hair raised an eyebrow, as if expecting an explanation out of him. Rae noted that the two parents had two other people beside them, all looking powerful.
“We’re in the middle of something, boys,” a tall and tired looking man next to Sam’s father told them. Rae hated how excluded she felt from everything that was going on. It was as if she was invisible.
“Mom, we need to talk to you about something really important,” Josh pleaded. “Please.”
“It’s about Danny,” Sam added in, staring at his dad with desperate eyes. “We found something that seems promising. I think we’re getting closer to finding him, Dad.”
“Samuel,” his dad’s voice shook. “Because of your carelessness, we could all be fighting for our lives outside of town in the next couple of hours.” He turned back to address the mayor. “If you’d just listen to us,” he clasped his hands together, “we’ll explain everything. This is all a massive misunderstanding.”
“The Wagner family is beyond devastated,” the mayor spoke over Sam’s dad. “I have to do something to let them know that their son didn’t die in vain.”
“He’s not dead!” Sam raised his voice in protest. His dad put a hand up to stop him.
“We found his jacket in the woods with a note on it written in blood,” Josh quickly explained to his mom. “The blood was thick, like he was in cold weather. Jake dug a hole where we spotted the jacket and found ice at the bottom. There’s something weird going on out there.”
“Hold on, you were with Jake?” Sam and Jake’s dad butted in, his eyes narrowed. In that moment, it seemed like Josh understood why Jake had been so hesitant to share that they had been together.
“It’s a long story,” Josh answered while avoiding eye contact.
“Where’s Jake now?” Sam and Jake’s dad demanded.
“In the woods,” Sam responded for Josh, since he seemed to be having trouble forming any coherent words. It was jarring how quickly the parents both shifted from looking angry to distressed.
“Alone?” Josh’s mom asked, looking at Sam and Jake’s dad with worry. Sam nodded his head, his lips pursed. He, Josh, and Rae shared the same thought: Okay, maybe it wasn’t such a great idea to leave him out there on his own. “Kelly,” Josh’s mom addressed Sam and Jake’s dad. “We need to get Jake out of there.”
“Go, we’ll try to sort things out here, Karen,” one of the vampires standing next to Josh’s mom assured her.
“We’ll be back soon,” Karen promised her.
“I hope so,” she said.
“Lead the way,” Kelly motioned for the door. “And hurry.”
The group was in such a rush to make sure that Jake was okay, that neither Kelly nor Karen even bothered to ask who Rae was, or why she was with them. That was fine with Rae, because she really didn’t know what the right explanation was to give. The last thing she wanted was to say the wrong thing and then pay the extreme penalty.
They were at the foot of the woods, and Josh pointed west.
“He should be that way,” he shared.
“He better be,” Kelly said to Sam and Josh. They barreled through the trees, Sam leading the way with the promise that he could smell Jake, and they were coming up close to him. Rae’s heart thundered in her chest, but she couldn’t tell if it was from the strenuous activity, or the anxiety that they might make their way to the hole in the middle of the woods, and not a single trace of Jake would be there. What made her even more nervous was the sun, which was starting to make its trek down towards the horizon. They didn’t have long before the woods were entirely dark, and they were virtually defenseless against whatever lurked around.
The trees around them grew more familiar to Rae in ways she couldn’t comprehend, and then in the distance she spotted Jake sitting at the edge of the hole.
“Thank god,” Kelly and Karen both breathed out.
As they got closer to Jake, two things became apparent to Rae: something had obviously happened, and Jake was in distress. When Kelly and Sam caught onto this, they ran the rest of the distance to Jake, squatting by his side. Rae, Josh, and Karen approached them as Kelly tried to pry information out of his son.
“Please talk to us, Jake.”
Jake had scratches running up and down his arms and bare torso, and a nasty slice on his cheek that looked like it would never permanently heal. His hair was disheveled and he shook out of control, but the most concerning thing was the look of devastation on his face.
Sam gave Jake’s bare back a light rub to try and calm him, and then placed his palm on Jake’s shoulder. Rae watched as Sam’s eyes rolled back in his head and he started to tremble in place, his hand still firmly on Jake. In return, Jake continued to gaze off into the distance, his eyes widening as if he was reliving whatever traumatizing event had happened while they were gone. Kelly watched between his two sons with concern, and was on top of holding Sam upright when he released from Jake with a gasp.
“Oh god,” Sam’s voice cracked, looking around at all of them in a panic. Kelly tried to soothe Sam, but he shakily got to his feet and, to everyone’s surprise, approached Rae. Unsure what was happening, Rae looked beyond Sam and saw that Jake was looking at her with tears streaming down his cheeks. “It’s your brother,” Sam told Rae.
“What?” Rae’s words felt disconnected from her body. What the hell did Morgan have to do with anything??
“He came out here looking for you.”
“Oh shit,” Rae said as her knees buckled.
“Jake tried to stop it, but some beast that I’ve never seen before grabbed him and dragged him into the hole,” Sam told her.
“Is he still alive?” Rae whispered.
“I don’t know,” Sam’s voice was hardly audible. Rae felt herself drop to her knees, but the pain from the force of impact didn’t seem to register in her brain. Everything was buzzing around her, and her eyes couldn’t focus. She wanted to scream out, to bawl her eyes out, but it was like her body was paralyzed in fear and grief. Anger trickled in. What the hell was he doing looking for her in the woods? He knew it wasn’t safe. But Rae did too. She shouldn’t have been in there either. Rae wanted to smack herself for being so foolish.
“I’m so sorry, Rae,” Jake’s voice came behind her, sounding like it was echoing in a pool. Rae didn’t want to look at him in the state she was in, but she turned to face him and was immediately swarmed in a tight embrace. As Jake held her in his arms, Rae had a hard time discerning if he needed the hug more, or her. She could feel the heat from some of his blood oozing onto her shirt, but it was the least of her worries. Morgan was gone, taken by some terrifying thing beyond any of their imaginations. As if Jake knew what she was thinking, he whispered into her ear, “I tried to do everything I could to keep your brother safe. I really tried. I’m so sorry.”
The ringing in Rae’s ears died down at Jake’s words. It was her job to keep Morgan safe, not Jake’s. She moved away from Jake’s arms and studied Sam, Josh, Kelly, and Karen, who were finally looking at her with suspicion, just noticing she was a part of the party.
“We need to find where this thing is taking its victims,” Rae instructed the group. “I’m getting my brother out of there if it’s the last thing I do.”
“Sure,” Kelly nodded at her. “But first things first, who the hell are you?”

.
The knock on your front door startled you until you realized it was probably just Sam. He usually spent a good chunk of the summer volunteering at the non-profit rescue that you ran out of your home. "Come on in," you yelled as you continued cleaning one of the litter boxes in the cat room.
"Hey!" He replied before erupting into laughter as the most recent litter of puppies ran scrambling into the living room to greet him. "Hello babies! How are you?" You heard laughter and unintelligible baby talk. "Does anyone wanna go outside?" His voice pitched up an octave at the end, and you could hear how much fun he was having. "We'll be outside if you need us!" He announced in his normal voice before you heard the sliding glass of the back door opening and closing.
After quickly refilling the last litter box, you washed your hands and made your way outside to find Sam laying on his stomach in the grass with a swarm of puppies running around and over him. Laughter bubbled out of you causing him to turn and look at you with a smile. "Oh hey, y/n!" He managed to say despite one of the puppies licking his face incessantly.
"Hey, Sammy," you shook your head as you stifled your laughter. "You wouldn't wanna hep me bathe these little monsters would you?" His eyes lit up and he quickly pushed up into a sitting position, holding out his hand for you to pull him to his feet. "I’m assuming that's a yes?" You teased, holding out your hand.
"Whoa, what happened here?" He asked as he grabbed your wrist instead then pulled himself up with your assistance. He turned your hand over, inspecting the bandage that Danny had put on your injury that morning.
"Well...you remember when I went to get that kitten out of the tree?" You asked nervously. You suddenly felt embarrassed and had no clue why. Sam technically worked for you, but you had always thought of him as a friend more than anything else.
"Yeah," he replied quickly, but clearly confused.
"I slipped when I was coming back down and sliced my hand open pretty good." He narrowed his eyes at you, studying your face, your bandaged hand, and your words. "And a very handsome firefighter may have had to help me down.." you added reluctantly with a flush of embarrassment.
"Oh really?" Sam smiled wide as he let go of your hand and picked up a whining puppy. "Now explain the smell of cookies in your kitchen because you’ve never made me cookies!" He put his hand on his hip and raised an eyebrow at you. You glared back at him causing you both to giggle. The puppy he had cradled in his arm started to squirm, so the two of you began ushering the others inside and corralling them into the living room as their designated safe area. "No seriously, spill," Sam said as he carried the squirmy puppy into the bathroom.
"Alright alright!" You put your hands in the air and laughed. "You know how I am," you began as he placed the pup in the tub and began spraying him with water.
"Kind of an asshole?" He answered, laughing loudly at his own joke, causing you and the little, wet dog to jump.
You glared at Sam but decided to let it slide as you stroked the pup's head. You then poured a glob of shampoo on the little guy's back before continuing, "So I felt bad all week, and ended up baking some chocolate chip cookies to bring to the fire station.."
"Oh my god! Is this real? Y/n, miss I don't have time for a relationship has a crush?" He couldn't hold in his enthusiasm or laughter as he teased.
"Shut up," you huffed a laugh as you splashed him with soapy water. He acted as if he was going to turn the sprayer on you, and you threw your hands up again in defeat. "ANYWAYS," you shot him a look as you scooped the puppy up and wrapped him in a towel. "I took the cookies over there, and talked to him for a few minutes before they got a call," you finished with a shrug as Sam walked out to trade the clean puppy for a dirty one, careful to put the clean one in the play pen in the kitchen to dry fully.
"And?" He asked as he walked back in with a new pup.
The process repeated as you gushed over everything Danny. "And nothing really.. I don't know if anything will come from it or if I'll even see Danny again, but he's so handsome and kind and.." you trailed off with a quiet sigh as you dried off the last of the 5 puppies. You turned back to Sam only to see him grinning. "What?" You asked suspiciously.
"Oh nothing," the tone of his voice only made your suspicions grow, but you bit your tongue. The next few hours were fairly normal, cleaning up, caring for the animals, then cleaning up some more.
When Sam was getting ready to leave, he turned and said, "You should come to my party Saturday night. I'll text you the address," then left before you could respond. Stunned, you sat for a moment until your phone vibrated and lit up with a text from him.
****
Sammy: Y/n, don't you dare bail on me! I hold grudges and I know where you live 😜
You: I know I know! I'll be there, calm down 🙄
You tossed your phone onto your bed as you stared at the clothes you had laid out. You had asked a million times to make sure it was casual, because you knew Sam had a tendency to leave out important details, but you still felt a little uneasy with your selection. The cropped charcoal colored shirt with white outlining of an angel and Led Zeppelin was definitely in your comfort zone, but the leopard print mini skirt with the slit up the right thigh was not. You toyed with the idea of wearing heels or your black docs, but you settled for the comfort of a pair of black high top converses.
Once you were dressed, your nerves really kicked in. You knew Sam was up to something, but couldn't quite put your finger on what. Before you could start to spiral over the anxiety building, you grabbed your keys and a red flannel in case it got cold later, then walked out your front door.
The gps said 10 minutes, but it didn't feel like long enough when you parked at the address provided. It was clearly a bachelor pad, and you shook your head at the ping pong table set up in the front yard with a crowd of people already around it. Sam was dancing on the porch, but he stopped when he saw you. "Y/n!" Your cheeks had to be bright red from the heat you felt as people turned to look at you. After quickly trotting up the stairs into Sam's arms, he whispered, "There's someone I want you to meet."
"I knew you were up to something," you playfully flicked the back of his neck as you followed him around the house and into the back yard.
"Me? Never," he turned back flashing you a toothy grin.
"You always," you replied with a laugh as you rounded the house and saw the small group of guys huddled around the fire. Nerves hit you once more, but you swallowed them and forced a smile.
"Yeah yeah," Sam laughed again. "Y/n, these are my brothers, Jake and Josh," he said motioning towards the two shorter men sitting on the right side of the fire. The first one, Jake, had long dark hair, a black button up shirt left fairly open, white linen pants, black loafers, and a black acoustic guitar in his lap. Josh had the same color hair but it was a mess of curls on top of his head, and he was wearing tight fitting khaki pants and a white long sleeve shirt with white vans. They both sported a bit of facial hair on their chins and upper lips, but Jake's felt more pirate like while Josh's almost felt Shakespearean.
After standing to greet you, Jake drawled, "It's lovely to meet you," in a slightly tipsy tone that made you smile as he took your hand and kissed your knuckles.
Josh practically shoved him out of the way bubbling with enthusiasm as he said, "Where has Prince Sam been hiding you?" So they're both flirts? You giggled and felt your cheeks blush.
"Sam volunteers at the non-profit animal rescue that I run," you explained with a nervous smile.
"Yeah, and I didn't invite her to meet you two," Sam said snarkily as he put his arm around your shoulder and lead you to the last guy of the group, who had been waiting patiently for an introduction.
Once you made it around the fire and could actually see his face, your heart did somersaults in your chest. "Hey, y/n," Danny said softly, with a nervous smile that matched your own.
"Danny, hi," you felt stupid suddenly, like your brain forgot how to form coherent thoughts let alone words. Sam laughed beside you, causing you to turn and look at him, utterly astonished. "I didn't know you two knew each other," you mused.
"Daniel is my roommate, so after hearing him talk nonstop about a mystery girl that spent her free time climbing trees to save kittens, I came to you, only to hear you gush over a handsome firefighter...so it wasn't hard to put two and two together," Sam laughed again as he let go of your shoulder and pushed you gently towards Danny. "You're both welcome," he teased before heading back to his brothers.
Danny somehow looked even more handsome in street clothes, almost vulnerable..especially with pink cheeks and a crooked grin. His black skinny jeans had a tear at the knee, the black Howlin Wolf shirt and dirty white vans had seen better days, but they all looked so good on him. You were in awe of his hair because with it being down, you could see just how curly it was. "How's your hand?" He asked nervously, glancing down at your injured hand.
"Much better now, actually," you held your palm up to show him the healing cut and he smiled before glancing over to the Kiszkas that were clearly watching the two of you. "Do you know where I can get a drink?" You asked quickly before you lost your nerve, hoping to get away from prying eyes.
"Sure, let me go get you one," he beamed at you proudly.
"Yeah, no...I'm coming with you. No offense, but I don't really know you.." you trailed off trying to be polite and firm. His cheeks flushed pink again.
"Oh, of course..sorry," he looked down at his feet and seemed genuinely sad, not that you had told him no..but just that you had to be worried about things like that. You followed him in the back door into the kitchen, and you were hit with the smell of marijuana smoke and the sound of laughter coming from the living room. Someone yelled your name so you scanned the room until your eyes landed on the face of an old friend. You turned back to Danny, trying to explain that you didn't want to bail on him. He leaned in and said, "Go ahead, I'll bring you a drink," pausing for a moment before shaking his head and walking towards the fridge and makeshift bar on the kitchen counter.
You watched for a moment before two hands landed on your shoulders, pulling your attention back to your old friend. "Y/n! What the hell are you doing here?" He boomed happily before pulling you into a hug.
"Sam invited me," you smiled as you embraced him. "Tyler, I haven't seen you since..high school?" Laughter bubbled out of the both of you as he released you. Tyler was your first real crush, but he pretty effectively friend zoned you, which made sense to you because of how nerdy and out of place you always felt compared to him and his jock friends.
"You look so good," he purred, letting his eyes roam down your legs and back up to your face. You rolled your eyes and playfully shoved his shoulder. He still looked pretty much the same: floppy brown hair, piercing blue eyes, a gray hoodie with some basketball team on it, a pair of light wash jeans and black nikes. "Come see the guys!" He put his arm around your shoulder and lead you to the couch, motioning for the guys to scoot over and make room.
After a few minutes, Danny walked over with two drinks in hand. He held out one for you before quickly pulling it back and taking a sip and smiling, as if he was proving it was safe. You accepted graciously and he mouthed "I'll be outside," as the group of people around you continued talking.
The night went on, and you hadn't seen Danny or Sam for more than a few minutes while they made fresh drinks. Jake wandered in at one point to grab an entire bottle of whiskey before retreating back to the fire.
Eventually, you found yourself being groped and pawed at by a very drunk Tyler. "Tyler, stop," you struggled to push him away as he kissed your neck and collar bone.
"Isn't this what you always wanted?" He crooned into your ear before nipping at your earlobe. He wasn't wrong. Had this happened a few years before, you would be loving it..but right now you felt icky and objectified.
"Please stop," your voice came out as more of a whine than a command and you hated yourself for it. He was leaning into you on the couch after shewing his friends away, and one of his hands ghosted down your thigh and began to dip under the hem of your skirt.
"She said stop," a stern voice came from behind you causing Tyler to pull away. He glared up at the man behind you, but he scooted away from you as his face fell. "You should go," the voice behind you said plainly and Tyler obeyed wordlessly. You couldn't believe you ever liked such a spineless creep. "I'm so sorry, y/n. I shouldn't have left you alone with him.." you turned to see Danny looking down at you with a mix of sadness and pride. You stood up and threw your arms around him, grateful for him and his timing.
"It's fine, I promise," you breathed in the smell of him, a combination of coconut shampoo, smoke from the fire and tequila. He smiled down at you weakly, clearly still concerned. "I just need a drink," you added with a laugh as he released you.
"I think we can do that," he replied softly as he smiled and followed you into his kitchen. You spent the next few hours chatting and drinking a lot. Danny kept you laughing and you felt yourself loosen up and relax around him.
Touches were stolen and eyes lingered, and you even caught yourself dancing to the music flowing through the house…until your grace—or lack there of—took over and you tripped. Your head grazed along the corner of the counter, and when you felt the blood starting to trickle down your face, you panicked.
“Oh fuck,” Danny mumbled before whisking you into the bathroom. “It’s gonna be okay, y/n..we’re just gonna get you cleaned up,” he continued calmly despite the glimmer of worry in his bright brown eyes. He shut the door behind you before carefully lifting you up onto the bathroom counter. He quickly began dabbing at the scrape with a damp washcloth before applying a small bandaid. “There, all better,” he said softly after placing a gentle kiss on your forehead. His eyes went wide and his cheeks flushed pink. “I don’t know why I did that,” he added in a rush of embarrassment that made you giggle.
“It’s okay,” you replied. “Thank you for taking care of me..again.” A smile spread across his face and you couldn’t help but mirror it as his eyes met yours. You slid down off the counter but your foot caught on the rug making you stumble, falling into Danny’s arms in a fit of nervous laughter.
“I guess you’ve fallen for me,” he teased as he bubbled with laughter. You wanted to say something snarky back, but your head emptied when you looked up to see how beautiful he looked with his head thrown back as he laughed so hard that his nose crinkled. His hands resting on your waist suddenly felt electric and your whole body buzzed with the energy.
Danny caught you staring, allowing your eyes to lock briefly before his eyes darted down to your lips as he licked his own. Your breath hitched as he leaned in slowly and cautiously. Before you could talk yourself out of it, you abruptly closed the distance, crashing your lips into his. He enveloped you completely, pulling you closer as your mouths moved together. “Danny,” you whispered into the kiss, trying to ask for more and he moaned in response, slipping his tongue between your lips.
“I love hearing you say my name,” he purred. You arched your back at his words, and his hand found your throat, squeezing gently as he backed you slowly into the wall.
You nipped at his lower lip playfully causing the corner of his mouth to curl into a smile. You let go once he snaked his other hand down your body, cupping your breast as he kissed you harder. You never did things like this. Ever. You had actually avoided all the places, all the apps, and all the men that somehow managed to ask you out in real life. You didn’t have time or the extra energy to devote to dating. Because of that, you always let your head get in the way, but this—this was nice.
You lifted the hem of his shirt, asking him to take it off before you let your hands roam his back down to his waist. He giggled as your hands ghosted across his tummy, finding his belt buckle below his happy trail. You tugged on the buckle, pulling him in, letting you feel him grow hard pressed against you.
Goosebumps rippled across your skin as he trailed his hand down your thigh, daring to inch closer and closer to where you wanted him most. You moaned into his kiss as his finger grazed across the fabric covering your dripping core. He mimicked your sigh as he pulled your panties to the side, swiping his index finger through your slick. You bit back a whimper as you felt him dip into your core and watched him try to hold in a moan.
Words failed you both as he started to curl and uncurl his finger, brushing against your front wall. His palm pressed against your clit as he worked you, and you couldn’t control the sounds pouring from your mouth. In a rush of desperation you pleaded for more, “please..I need..” You couldn’t finish your thoughts, but the smirk on Danny’s face told you he understood.
He pulled away so he could undo his belt and pants, letting them fall to his thighs as you wiggled free of your soaked panties. “Holy shit,” you sighed at the sight of him. He flashed you a crooked grin as he stepped closer, lifting one of your legs to rest on his hip as he kissed you again. He reached between you, lining himself up before slowly pressing into you. You moaned into the kiss before pushing your tongue past his lips, desperate for more of him. His hand found your throat again, gripping gently at first while he searched your eyes for permission. A subtle nod was all you could give him, but it was enough. His grip tightened as he squeezed your throat in the most delicious way.
When he picked up his pace, now slamming into you, you arched your back, lost entirely in the pleasure washing over you. Everything was a blur to you, all you knew was Danny—all you needed was Danny. When he released your throat, both of his hands found your hips, using the hold on you to pull you down onto him as he fucked into you. His lips trailed down your jaw, nibbling on the soft skin of your neck and leaving wet kisses and hickies across your collarbone.
“Please, Danny,” was all you could manage as you came undone, seeing stars as your body took over. You clenched around him while a stream of praises poured from your mouth. You were able to open your eyes just in time to see his roll back as he finished inside of you.
As you both came back down to earth, he held you there for a moment before mumbling, “fuck.” He forced a weak smile before gently letting your foot settle back on the ground. You were probably imagining it, but something felt different. He wordlessly pulled up his pants, grabbing his shirt, and quickly leaning in for a chaste kiss. All of a sudden, you were left alone and confused after watching him walk out the door.

Chapter 5 Chapter 7
You woke up with a thick, gloomy fog invading your mind. You couldn’t think clearly, could barely see, and every inch of your body seemed to be in pain. It was heartbreak.
The book Josh had shown you last night was next to you, open to the middle. On the lined page was Jake’s messy handwriting recounting all of the small details of the first night the two of you met. In the margins were tiny little foot notes that stated things such as ‘make sure to tell her this,’ ‘this is when I knew,’ and other small comments. He was writing for you, just in case your memory of him never came back after he was shot. Jake wrote down the feelings he had for you so you could relive the moments with him.
The blank, light colored walls of the room did you no favors as flashes of memories with Jake played like an old Hollywood movie while you stayed hidden in the safety of the bed. You laid still, staring at the wall for over an hour before you mustered up enough courage to get up and move amongst the house. It was overly quiet in the manor. You weren’t sure if that was because everyone was mourning Jake and Sam, or if you were just completely alone. Though, it felt like the latter would always be the answer from here on out.
Your feet glided heavily along the floor as you used all of your energy to make your way down the stairs. It was too difficult. Halfway down, you stopped and took a seat. You rested your head against the metal railings and let small tears fall onto the marble steps. So little time was spent in this house, but every small detail reminded you of Jake. He was innately a part of you, that even looking down at your hands it felt like you were looking at him.
You ran the nail of your right index finger up your left hand, increasing pressure as you went until tiny droplets of blood started peppering your skin. You wanted to get him off your skin, you needed every reminder of him to disappear. Once you made it to your ring finger, you grabbed the dainty gold band and harshly yanked. It was hard enough to pop your finger out of place, making it turn the darkest shade of purple. You knew neither the pain nor injury would last long, yet the brief moment of feeling physical pain more than psychological was almost worth it. It made you feel almost… human.
With rage and loneliness flooding through you, you rear your hand back and punch the metal railings as an agonizing scream leaves you. Two sharp jagged pieces of decorative metal went clattering onto the floor of the grand entryway, your blood staining the floor around it.
“Y/N?” Ellsie sheepishly peaked her head around the corner of the wall that led to the living room. “Are- are you okay?”
You stared blankly at her, what a stupid question. Of course you weren’t okay. Nothing about this was okay and you doubt you’d ever be ‘okay’ again. You lost your husband, your soul, your heart. You were left empty.
“Daniel told me about what happened. Before he left.” She stepped out fully into the entryway, picking at her nail beds as she did. Ellsie looked sad, but like she was trying her best to hide it. Compared to you, she had no reason to be upset - her soulmate was still here. “That was three days ago.”
“I’ve been asleep for three days?” Your voice was weak and scratchy. Your whole mouth was dry and you just noticed how hungry you actually were.
“Yeah. Daniel and Joshua left right after you did, to uh, to find Samuel. I’ve been all alone in this big house with no one to talk to.” She chuckled lightly, but quickly stopped when your face stayed without any emotions. “I just, I just wanted to say I am sorry for everything I have caused your family.”
“It’s not your fault, Ellsie. It’s mine.” You paused for a second to really look at her. Ellsie still looked so young and innocent, even pregnant. You feel bad for her. It was unlikely that she knew the truth of who caused her to end up in this predicament. “And Jake’s.”
“No ma’am. I caused you guys to come back here. Y/N, you’ve been good to me and I’ll do anything to make it up to you.”
“Just keep yourself safe, Ellsie. Even if that means…leaving.”
Ellsie looked shocked that you would even propose her leaving Danny. You would never have told her this a few days ago, but you didn’t want such a sweet girl to go through what you had. You were pulled through so much in a short time, just to be left completely alone.
“I could never leave Daniel, he is mine.”
You get up off the stairs passing her one the way to your kitchen, “Yeah. I thought the same thing.”
In the kitchen was a pitcher in the middle of the island with a small note next to you. Your heart skipped a beat in hopes that it was Jake who left it for you. You rushed over to the glass full of thick blood with a hopeful grin, only for it to completely vanish when you saw the note.
I’ll always be here - Josh
Next to his name was a messily drawn smiley face. You knew Josh was trying his hardest to be supportive, and you knew he was hurting too. But he had just spent a long time away from Jake, he should be used to it. From the moment you completed the prophecy, you had yet gone a day without your soulmate. This was so much easier on Josh.
Now that you think of it, all of this could be traced back to Josh. This is all his fault. If he hadn’t brought Aleera home, he never would have had to leave. If he didn’t leave, Jake wouldn't have come back to New Orleans and the two of you could be happy and together.
Josh refused to let his twin be happy, and this was just another way for him to get some power over his twin. You rip the paper in half and throw it into the large farm-style sink on the other side of the island. Forgoing a cup, you tip back the pitcher and drink all of it’s contents down in a few large gulps.
Ellsie followed you as quickly as she could, hindered by her belly that looked so much bigger than the last time you saw her. “From what Daniel told me, he had to leave. Y/N, it doesn’t mean he loves you any less. Honestly, it seems like Jake loves so much he is willing to put his happiness aside for you.”
“No, if it was about me he would have taken me with him.”
“He just wants to protect you and the family, Y/N.”
You sarcastically scoff, slamming your hand down on the counter making Ellsie jump. “I know, Ellsie. I fucking know. That’s all he ever says. That’s all I ever fucking hear. But I need him, I just need him.”
You were uncontrollably sobbing now, your weight buckling under you. You tried to keep yourself from falling to your knees, but it was no use. Grief and sorrow filled you completely taking over you as you thought how you potentially have lost your husband and best friend in a matter of twenty- four hours.
Even though it was difficult for her, Ellsie joined you on the floor with an abundance of sighs and groans. She lovingly accepted your weight as she held you to her chest and allowed you to cry and wail. Ellsie smoothed your hair down and rocked you back and forth to try and soothe you.
“Y/N, shh, darling.” Ellsie repeated over and over again, her voice becoming weaker as she started to cry as well.
“I can’t do it, Ellsie. I can’t.”
She grabbed your face in her hands. “You can and you will. I know you love him, but there was life before him and there will be life after him. You’re allowed to hurt, darling, but you still have so much to give the world.”
“Like what?” The thick coating of mucus and tears in your throat made your words sound hollow when you spoke.
“This baby is gonna need her God-mama.”
“Huh?”
She smirked shyly. “I know it’s not the best timing, Y/N. I was planning on asking you but then everything happened. I just trusted you from the moment I met you and I want my baby to have a role model like you.”
“I’m no role model.”
“But you are. You are so fiercely loving - I hope my daughter has that trait.” She silently waited for an answer, but when she didn’t get one, she shuffled away from you. “I’m sorry, I know it’s not the right time. This was so stupid, I am sorry-”
“I’d love to.”
Something compelled you to say yes. This little baby would have so many hardships to face later in life, and if you could help her — no, protect her, then maybe you’d feel a new purpose in life. Jake had taught you to protect those around you, and so you would.
“We are naming her Cheyenne, after my mother.”
“That’s beautiful, Ellsie.” You sniffled and smiled. If you were honest, talking about the baby actually was making you feel a little better. Like a new light in the darkness that seemed to surround your family.
“Cheyenne Daniella Wagner.” She sang as she patted her belly. “Gosh, you’re gonna be a handful aren’t you, honey bee?”
“She’s going to be a werewolf, right?”
“We won’t know until her thirteenth birthday, but we can pray not.”
“Ellsie, she is the daughter of an alpha.”
Her crooked smile was full of nervous energy, “May the odds be in our favor.”
Both of you knew that the day that Cheynne turns thirteen, all of your lives would be completely different. She would need all of you for protection, guidance, and belonging.
“We can do this.”
The two of you sat in solidarity on the floor for a long while. You spent the time just supporting each other through the uncertainty of the future. Ellsie melded into the family, she seemed to be exactly what was missing - positive energy.
Your breathing finally found it’s slow, natural, calm rhythm again, just for it to be ripped away by the sound of screaming coming from outside.
The sun was still set high in the sky, so there was no way for you to safely go out and check on what was going on. But, you knew that voice. You knew who was screeching your name in pain and agony.
“Sam?” You scurried to your feet, sprinting to the front door without actually thinking of the consequences.
As your hand grasped the doorknob, Ellsie was yelling at you, still on the floor of the kitchen, about not going in the sun. Her pleading words fell upon your deaf ears as you winced when the light instantly burned your skin. Small, round, blisters began popping up along your forearm when you used it to shield your sensitive eyes from the sun.
Everything you looked at was out of focus, yet you could still make out Sam sitting in a chair at the far end of the estate.
You blink more times than needed to try and gain a clearer picture of what was happening next to the tree line. When you finally were able to see everything and everyone, you almost wish you hadn’t.
Next to Sam was Xander, who you could only recognize from the memory Claudia showed you. However now, his jet black hair was past his collarbones and he had many, many more tattoos. But he wasn’t who was scaring you.
Two massive, muscular, and feral-looking wolves were posted on either side of Xander and Sam. One was coated in gray fur that turned an almost translucent shade of white towards the tip. The first was clean and fluffy, but their sharp teeth and snarling snout took away any ounce of playfulness and kindness.
The other was brown, borderline red in color who’s fur appeared dirty and matted. Their eyes weren’t as fierce as the slightly larger one across from them, but the moment their chocolate brown eyes landed on you, they turned a shocking shade of yellow.
“Sam!” You screamed from the porch, only being hidden in the tiniest amount of shade the awning allowed.
“Where is Jake?” Xander yelled back. He was more than a football field’s length away from you, yet his voice carried to sound as if he was standing directly in front of you.
“He’s gone! He left because of you!”
All of Sam’s skin was a harsh shade of pink. Open sores and blisters were scattered all over his skin, oozing pus and blood as they burst from the heat. He barely looked like himself. His eyes were hollow and his cheekbones were more pronounced than normal.
They tore his clothes from his body, leaving him in black boxers that left most of his skin exposed and vulnerable. From his head down to his feet, he was burned raw. You could see shiny exposed muscle and matte white bones on the tops of his thighs. To the left of his belly button was a monstrous bite, something far too big to be left by any vampire you knew.
It spanned the size of his torso, ending right under his pectoral, leaving gaping triangular shaped holes. It was no longer bleeding, but black scapes made his skin have the texture of rough sandpaper.
“Sammy!” You screeched when you noticed his skin melting almost down to the bone.
“I’ll let him die out here if you don’t bring me Jake.” Xander sounded sickeningly amused by the situation playing out. He was reveling in the fact he was able to torture the one who took away his first love.
‘Baby. If you can hear me, please come back right now. Baby, please! They have Sam!’
You tried to call out to Jake, to get him home, but the lack of response told you that he could either no longer hear you, was too far away, or simply was ignoring you.
You tried again, hoping that the desperation in your voice would be clear to him. ‘Jake, please! We need you, I need you.’
Again there was no answer. He made good on his promise that he would leave you completely alone.
“Jake is gone Xander! Let Sam go!”
“A deal is a deal, blood sucker! If I can’t have Jake, then give me Ellsie!”
Sam used the last of his energy to weakly yell out “No!”
His head was still hung low towards his lap, but your hearing allowed you to hear him whispering. “Don’t do that to Danny. Let him be happy.”
A sharp pain pierced your chest. Sam was sacrificing himself for his twin flame. Just as Jake always seemed to do.
You thought of disobeying his wishes, literally giving Ellsie to the wolves. But you knew that wasn’t the right thing to do. Sam made it very clear on what his wishes were, and though it felt almost impossible, you had to respect them.
“I love you, Sammy.”
“I love you, princess.”
There was so much loss in your life in such a little amount of time, yet you had no time to process any of it. From the chair, Sam made a feeble attempt to lunge towards Xander, falling to the grass with a loud thud.
Because they don’t know your best friend like you do, they didn’t understand that he was distracting them just long enough for you to slip away. They never came close to the house, but you weren’t going to risk it. So, as Xander laughed at Sam’s pathetic, meek state, you slammed the door shut and ran straight to Ellsie.
She hadn’t made it far off the ground, and you had to help her all the way to her feet. “Ellsie, we have to hide you, now!”
“Is it Xander? Has he come for my baby?” Her face twisted into panic sobs when the realization of who exactly was outside hit her.
Even though you wanted nothing more than to curl into a ball on the ground and grieve the loss of the two most important men in your life, you owed Ellsie protection. She was family.
“Ellsie, come on.” You tried to gently tug on her arm, but she didn’t budge. You didn't want to accidentally hurt her or the baby, but you needed to get her somewhere a little safer.
“I can’t see him, Y/N. Please don’t make me see him.” She was no longer thinking straight, she just continued to babble and panic over all the possible consequences of having Xander outside.
You were growing impatient. You knew that there was a reason Jake told you you weren’t allowed to leave the property. But you couldn’t risk the reasoning. “Ellsie, I’m going to pick you up now.”
You gathered her in your arms and sprinted to the room with no windows you said goodbye to Jake in. It seemed the safest for you. Only one entrance and no one could see in to know where you were.
“My baby, Y/N, my baby.” She wailed when you set her in the farthest corner of the dark room.
“She’s fine, Ellsie. I need you to listen to me.”
“Don’t let them hurt my baby.” She continued to wail on.
“Ellsie!” You quickly grabbed her face in your hands. You look at her in her sad, wet eyes. “I accept you, I accept you into this family.”
You weren’t sure if it was going to work or if you said the right words, but you needed her to have every possible connection and tie to Danny.
“What are you-“ she began.
“Close your eyes and think of Danny.”
“Wh-“
“Just do it” you rushed her on. After a brief moment of questioning, she did as you asked. “Think about being next to him, whispering in his ear.”
“Okay…”
“Now, tell him we need him. Tell him to come home now.”
“He won’t be able to hear me, Y/N.”
“With your mind, Ellsie. Talk to him with your mind.” You spoke through gritted teeth, having no patience left within you.
Ellsie’s face twitched and made microscopic movements as if she was having a conversation out loud with him. You hoped that it was working, that she had reached Danny for help, but her eyebrows still exposed her confusion.
You let your hands drop to her shoulders, becoming more supportive than demanding.
“Ellsie?” She sushed you, then opened her eyes wide with a loud gasp.
“He’s on his way. Daniel and Josh are on their way.”
“Oh sweet girl! Thank you.” You kissed her forehead and gave her a proud smile. Officially, Ellsie was now one of you.
“So, he is really mine now?”
“He has always been yours.”
You never imagined the first one to actually find their soulmate would be Danny. However after reflecting on it, it made perfect sense.
Danny was kind, sweet, and genuine. And although lost sometimes, he was steadfast in who he was becoming. He had so much love to give, and you were happy that these two girls were going to wake up every day with immense love and support.
“Ellsie, can I ask you something?”
“Sure, what is it?”
“Um. What do you know about your cousin Marques?” You weren't sure if Ellsie knew about how she ended up in Xander’s possession. But you doubted it from the fact she never seemed to recognize the twins.
“Don’t really know him. He is much, much older than I am.”
“Talking about my nephew now, girl?”
Claudia appeared from out of nowhere, again, to startle the two of you.
“Oh! Ms. Claudia I’m so glad you’re here! You have to help us!”
“Help you? I tried to warn you, but you just couldn’t let him go. Now look at us, my boy, my beautiful boy - dead!” She was shaking. “And you did nothing! You did nothing to try and help him. If that was Jacob out there, would you have let them kill him!”
You put your body between Claudia and Ellsie’s, just as an extra measure of protection. Claudia was angry and you had no idea what her limits actually were. Yet, you stayed silent because you knew she was right. If that was Jake out there, in that chair, you wouldn’t have thought twice about giving up Ellsie.
“I came here to help you. To give you the message Jacob left with me, but I come here to see my Samuel dangling from one of those creatures' dirty mouths!” She aggressively thrusted her pointed finger towards the lawn where you last saw Sam.
“He told me to Claudia, he told me to save Ellsie.”
“I knew the day Marques met Jake, he was going to be bad news. Marques was sick, but he was a good boy!”
“What are you talking about?”
“Marques was a werewolf, yes, but he wasn’t like the others. He was weak and sick, and could never keep up with the others. Then Jake found him, had him drink his blood and bam! Marques was the strongest creature in Louisiana.”
“So? Claudia, what does this have to do with Sam?”
“Marques had two alphas then, and you can’t have two alphas. He was exiled by his clan, completely alone. Jacob never did anything. Not a damned thing to help out my nephew. He let him roam the South alone and scared because Jacob had his brothers and wasn’t looking for anymore. Well, until that Daniel came around.”
You stood to your feet when Claudia made her way close to Ellsie.
“I went to find Jacob, set him straight but I turned a blind eye when I fell in love. But to this day, your husband,” she pointed at you accusatory, “tears my family apart. Has Marques wrapped around his finger so tightly, he’d sell his cousin.”
“What?” Ellsie’s lip quivered. “Jake gave me to Xander?”
“Of course he did. Because Jake doesn’t give a damn about anyone other than his brothers and his slut.”
“That’s not true, Ellsie.” You tried to reason.
“Did he or did he not bargain her life away for the likes of his brother.” Claudia corrected.
“Ellsie, he feels so guilty-“
“You knew? I trusted you, asked you to be the godmother of my baby, and you knew?” Ellsie scooted as far away from you as she could before she was firmly pressed against the wall.
“I-I-“ you worked to find the words to explain yourself, but nothing came through. You had no excuse, none that made sense anyway. “Yes, I knew.”
“How could you?” Ellsie spat.
“Because she is just like her soulmate. She deserves to be alone. Just like Jacob, she is cold, dark, selfish, cruel-“
Before her last word left her mouth, you had her pinned to the wall closest behind her.
“Don’t you dare speak of him that way.”
“Now that Samuel is gone, I don’t give a shit about this house.” Claudia snapped her fingers, and the large house shook in response. “The protection is gone, have fun with the full moon tonight.”
“You send him away just to put my family in danger?” Your hands squeeze around Claudia’s thin, long neck. Anger and protectiveness flooded your senses, and you knew exactly who you resembled.
“I was wrong about you, your fate is tied to that devil. You’re just like him.”
“That’s fucking right.” You violently tilt your hands to the left, effectively snapping Claudia’s neck with a shrill crack. Her body dropped to the ground with a loud thud, and you could hear her bones snap from the harsh impact.
Ellsie shrieked, muffled by her palm smacking against her mouth. Her knees were pulled to her chest and she was slowly rocking back and forth, hitting the wall behind her with a slow methodical rhythm.
“Y/N?”
At the end of the hall was a terrified looking Josh. His eyes frantically bounced between you and Claudia’s limp and twisted body on the ground near the baseboard.
“What did you do?” Josh asked.
Danny wasn’t paying any attention to you. His focus was on Ellsie who was sobbing behind you. With a pointed glare at you, Danny stomped towards Ellsie. His shoulder aggressively bumped yours, making you stumble backwards.
“Ellsie, what’s wrong?” Danny was trying his best to soothe her. Talking sweetly in a calm voice and smoothing her dark hair against her head.
“Jake-Jake….” She started.
Josh made his way over to you, grabbing your arm to keep you from taking steps towards the couple in the room.
He leaned in and whispered, “You blessed her?”
You silently nod your head, keeping your eyes completely locked on Danny and Ellsie.
The way he was touching her, caressing her, caring for her. And even though it had only been three days, you were missing Jake’s touch already. You felt completely empty without him.
Josh’s hand on you felt wrong, so wrong it almost hurt you. You shrugged him off of you, much to his disappointment.
“I know what he did, Ellsie. Josh told me, well, Josh showed me what Jake wrote.”
Josh was holding the black book that obviously had pages torn out. You expected it was the pages Jake discussed what he did to Ellsie, because sticking out of Danny’s back pocket was a few pages of ripped paper.
“You should read this when you’re ready, Ellsie.”
Danny put the papers on the floor next to her, then pulled her into his arms.
Josh, once again, grabbed your arm and pulled you into the hallway.
“How did you get back here? The sun is out.”
“Tinted windows.” Josh was fidgeting, locking his jaw in and out of place.
“Y/N,” his voice cracked when he said your name. “Tell me Sam is alright.”
You couldn’t look him in the eye. Josh lost both of his brothers, and the heartbreak was evident in his eyes. He looked weak and scared, even more so than usual.
“He’s not.” was all you had to stay for Josh to get the picture.
“Dead?”
You nodded your head, still not looking at Josh. He slumped against the wall of the hallway with his hands on his knees.
“How much time do we have before Xander comes back?” Josh asked with a few tears sliding off his chin into his white shoes.
“Sundown.”
He sniffled a few times, before standing up straight and putting on a brave face. Josh did his best impression of Jake, rolling his shoulders back and standing a little taller.
“We only have a few hours until the full moon. Let’s get to work.”
You silently followed him as he made his way down the stairs to the library. His shoulders displayed confidence, yet his facial features were wrecked with anxiety.
“Josh, what are you doing?” He didn’t answer. “Josh! Tell me what you’re doing!”
He was rummaging through the cedar desk in the left corner, “I’m not Jake, you can’t just order me around.”
You sighed, “Josh, please can you tell me what’s happening?”
Josh stopped his movements and slid on top of the desk. “Do you think he is going to come back?”
Your stomach dropped. You weren’t sure if you had time for this, but you would take any opportunity to talk about Jake that you could.
“Yes. For me— I mean, us.” You tried to catch yourself, but Josh smirked when you flubbed your words.
“No, no you’re right.” He hopped off the desk, grabbing something from the drawer as he did. Josh stepped right in front of you, close enough for you to feel his breath against the high peaks of your cheeks. He kept looking at your lips, and you swore he was going to kiss you. Your heart began to beat faster and faster, concern over your own reaction making your palms grow sweaty.
If Josh kissed you, you wouldn’t know what you would do. A part of you wanted to believe you’d push him away, smack him in the face. But the other wanted to melt into him and let him make you forget about everything that’s happened…even if it’s just for a brief moment.
Josh leaned in a little to your body, just allowing his hips to graze your’s. “Then let’s make sure he still can come back to you.”
From his hand dangled a teardrop shaped vile from a long silver chain, full of the brightest red blood you’ve seen. It matched the same color of blood that was in the necklace Jake gave you for your birthday.
“Drink up.” Josh popped the cork and took a quick swig of the blood. “Alpha blood makes you stronger.”
His lips were painted with Jake’s blood before he licked them clean. Josh passed you the drink and you looked at him for reassurance.
“Go ahead, it’s not like you haven’t done it before.” He flashed you a knowing look. If you had stayed awake after biting Jake, maybe you would have felt his power, had increased senses, but you were too grief stricken to even pick yourself off of the ground.
Maybe that’s why he wanted you to bite him, or maybe he wanted a piece of you always with him.
You take a bigger drink than Josh. Electricity flowed through your body down to your fingertips, and you could feel yourself grow stronger every second.
Just as you were reveling in the power, Ellsie’s pained scream echoed through the whole house.
You and Josh rushed to her, getting there in a blurred second.
You were both huffing by the time you made it to the back room. You looked around for any sign of Xander or one of his werewolves, but there was none.
Danny was holding on to her hand, kneeling on one knee next to her. Ellsie was laying on the ground, perched up slightly, with a puddle between her legs.
Danny whipped his head to you, talking directly to you. “Her water broke.”

Masterpost, Chapter 10.1
Tumblr media
Fifteen minutes. Fifteen excruciatingly long minutes you have to spend crammed into the backseat of this Uber wedged between them. You’re drunk enough to lose yourself the feeling of hands and mouths roaming your body, but sober enough to be aware that your driver has made several glances in the rearview mirror.
Changing traffic lights blur in your periphery, passing street signs become unrecognizable. Josh’s insatiable hunger for you has only grown since you left the bar. With his mouth attached to your neck, his fingers slip under the hem of your dress, inching farther up the inside of your thigh. If you could get your way without the risk of being thrown out of the car, you’d have them inside you already. All you can do is writhe across the middle seat, hoping that they miraculously do.
Kai seems the most level-headed one between the three of you, making polite conversation with the driver —  small talk that doesn’t hold your attention. What does keep it, is the feeling of his erection straining beneath your wandering hand. With what he’s teased for free on his socials and what’s straining beneath your palm, you’ve created a mental image, but the limitations of the denim keep you guessing.
You massage your thumb across the length of his covered cock. He chuckles and leans in close enough to whisper, “I thought you didn’t want me to assume anything.”
You squeeze your hand around it, making his eyes flutter for a second before his hand rests on top of yours. The intensity of his stare into your eyes grows as he waits for you to say something. The car pulls up at the end of the twin’s driveway, interrupting your thoughts. Josh rushes to pop the handle of the door and drags you out with him, causing you to stumble out of the car trying to get to your feet, but he’s quick to catch you.
“Oh shit!” You break into giggles, clutching onto him to keep your balance.
“You okay, baby?” He laughs, pulling you in tight by an arm wrapped around your waist. You nod, playing with the golden sun swinging across his sternum. Despite his entire torso being exposed from his unbuttoned shirt, you can feel his warmth beneath your hands. “I think this is the first time I’ve seen you like this.”
“Seen me like what?”
“A little tipsy,” he teases, swaying you slightly before giving your asscheek a firm squeeze. It’s all making you feral — his musky scent of sweat and cologne mixing together, the feeling of his fingers skimming along the lace edge of your panties, even down to the way he’s grinning at you. Your hands have a mind of their own, sliding up his smooth chest to hook around the back of his neck, tugging him into a kiss. “…and this horny.”
“You just want me to stand here or what?!” Kai shouts from a distance. You whip your head around to see him standing on the front stoop waiting for you now that the Uber is long gone.
You and Josh share a laugh as you start walking up the driveway. He takes your hand, but before you reach the halfway point, he stops to ask you, “Are you sure you want to do this? It’s okay if you want to back out.”
His nervousness is starting to reveal itself now that the moment is becoming more real by the second. You’d be lying if you said you didn’t feel it too. Throughout the summer, you’ve become familiar with him and Jake. This, however, was new. Very new.
You give him a reassuring smile, squeezing the hand that’s starting to sweat against yours. “I want to if you do.”
That glimmer returns, flashing over his irises that are illuminated by the porch light. “Yeah?”
“Fuck yeah.”
“I love…just…ugh.” He bites his words through a groan before yanking into another kiss. “You’re amazing. I don’t fucking deserve you.”
“We can do that inside the house, you know?” Kai interrupts. He’s still waiting, leaning against the side of the house with his arms crossed over his chest.
“You sound impatient, Kai,” Josh giggles as he searches for the key on the ring. You’re not helping in the slightest, nipping at Josh’s ear to feel the cold, gold hoop against your tongue. It distracts him, making him use up every ounce of willpower to unlock the front door, but he manages.
“Says the man who has had a raging hard-on for the last hour,” Kai quips back.
Josh’s laugh cracks through the air as he pushes the door open and enters the dark house. “Once your cock has been inside her, you’ll know why.”
You would’ve smacked his arm, playfully scolding him, but Kai’s hand hooks your wrist before you can, pulling you toward him. As if he were a shadow consuming you, he coos with a calming lilt, “Is that true, kitten? Are you so irresistible that you’ve got our Josh pussy blind?”
You’re learning quickly that he loves this game — each play to see who is chasing who, and right now, he’s been batting you around to see where his little mouse runs off to. You meet his jade-colored eyes, hoping your rapid breathing and flushed cheeks aren’t giving you away.  “Only one way to find out.”
A devilish grin pulls over his teeth, and he releases his gentle grasp around your forearm to set you free. You watch Josh make his way around the living room, flipping the tableside lamps on to bring the house to life. Kai soaks in the glowing light, taking in the space around him. “So…when’s Jake supposed to be home?”
Josh huffs out a laugh, “He’s not.”
“He isn’t?” You cut in, sounding far more disappointed than you truly are. You’ve had plenty of distractions tonight, pushing him out of your mind until now. Being here, seeing all his possessions laid out in front of you without him brings those feelings you’ve been shoving away to the surface.
“Yeah, he texted me that he’ll be at Sam’s tonight. He usually stays in town at his place if we go out,” Josh explains as he turns to face you, seeing the fleeting turmoil casting over your face. He walks over to you, giving you a reassuring embrace. “Hey. He’ll be fine, okay?”
Doubt bubbles in the pit of your stomach when you remember how Jake acted and looked at you at the bar. You feel Kai’s eyes on you as he stands off to the side, gauging the situation playing out in front of him. Josh smiles, guiding your attention back to the present with him. “I promise, baby. You want this, right?”
“Yeah,” you reply softly, breathing in his presence.
You watch as Kai steps into your view behind Josh and sinks his teeth into the side of his neck. Josh sucks in a sharp breath and lets a strangled moan free as Kai’s tongue travels to his ear. Satisfied with the reaction, Kai hums into his flushed skin, “Then there’s nothing to worry about, is there?”
Josh emphasizes with a heavy sigh, “We have the whole house to ourselves.”
Kai continues to walk around him until he’s standing directly behind you. He then places both hands on your shoulders, sending the breath of his words across the shell of your ear, “You hear that? The whole house.” A shiver rolls down your spine at the thought while his fingers massage you. He’s so close to your cheek that you feel his lips move as he speaks to Josh, “Got anything to drink?”
“Yeah. I think there’s a bottle of tequila in the cabinet.”
“That’s perfect. I think she and I will go ahead and make ourselves comfortable.” He slips away from you and sits on the couch, leaving you with Josh.
Josh’s hands which have yet to leave your waist, squeeze around your hips when he asks for himself, “Would you like a drink, baby?”
You know mixing liquors is probably a poor decision, but it’s become the least of your concerns tonight. “Tequila soda?”
He flashes a warm smile before kissing you. “Coming right up.” He separates from you and makes his way into the kitchen. Within seconds, that fluttery nervous feeling returns knowing that Kai is waiting for you.
“C’mere,” Kai beckons while tapping his hand on the top of his thigh. You’re drawn to him without further thought, sliding yourself onto his lap with his guiding hand. He balances most of your weight on his right leg, wrapping his arm around your waist to hold you close. “That’s it, sugar.”
His ringed fingers skim over your dress and down your legs draped over him. “Are you gonna tell me your favorite places you like to be touched?” His lips ghost along your jawline, making you squirm against him. The tip of his nose dips into your cleavage to breathe in your scent. “Or are you gonna make me work for it?”
“It wouldn’t be as fun if I told you,” you tease, combing your fingers through the soft, raven-black curls at the nape of his neck.
He groans at the feeling and traces circles on the top of your knee that’s exposed below the hem of your dress. “Here?”
You giggle from how the sensation tickles, “You’re getting warmer.” You watch as he slowly pulls the fabric up inch by inch, revealing your freshly shaven legs. His fingertips skate along your inner thigh, making a moan push past your lips.
“How ‘bout now?” He asks through the wet kisses being showered all over your neck. You should be embarrassed by the effect he has on you, but that’s a fact you’ll have to accept later. Here you are, falling apart on another man’s lap, drenching your lace panties when he’s barely touched you.
“Kai…” you whine, most likely meant as a warning or perhaps a plea — that, you can’t be sure. He responds to you calling his name by digging his fingers into the thick flesh of your thigh hard enough that it might leave tiny bruises, making you gasp loudly. You feel his hardening cock beneath your ass as he grinds you across his lap.
You look up to see Josh watching you from the kitchen. He seems entertained, smiling at you before dropping his focus to the drinks he’s still preparing. Kai’s hand slides farther up, now inches away from where you want it.
“Now?”
Your voice catches in your throat, coming out as a broken whimper, “Warmer.”
A throaty laugh rumbles in the depths of his throat as he drags his middle finger over your covered pussy. You can’t hold back from bucking your hips when he rubs over your throbbing clit. “And now?”
“Hot. Hot,” you groan, gripping his hair by the root in your clenched fist.
His finger slips under the fabric, sliding effortlessly through your slick. “Fucking Christ you’re so wet,” he huffs, quickly retrieving his hand to pat the top of your thigh. “Stand up for me.”
Confused, and a bit disoriented, you struggle to lift yourself from his lap to stand to your feet. He stops you before you can, redirecting you, “No, no. Up here, kitten.”
You hesitate for a second once you realize what he’s asking of you. “I don’t know…”
“I got you. Come on,” he reassures, taking your hand in his. The alcohol in your system throws off your coordination and balance, but he helps you onto the couch with minimal effort. With your feet planted on either side of his legs, his hands dive under your dress and hook the band of your panties at your hips. He tugs them off in a swift motion and tosses them out of sight.
He pushes up the front of your dress, bunching the material at your navel to expose your bare pussy that’s right at his eye level, mere inches away from his mouth. You suddenly feel self-conscious, worrying about placing too much of your weight on him, and brace yourself against the wall so you can hover.
“Fuck, I love women,” the proclamation leaves his glossy lips as he kneads his thumbs into your thighs, admiring the sight before him. He lifts one of your legs and places it over his shoulder before burying himself in you.
“Oh, god!” you cry out, instantly overwhelmed by his pointed tongue rolling over your clit.
“He was right…” he confesses through panting breaths that cling to you. With a hand secured to your hip and one cupped under your ass, he drives you down onto his face. “…You taste fucking incredible.”
Everything about him is new — the curious passes of his tongue as he learns your body. He’s proving himself to be a quick learner, picking up on what makes you tick. Before you know it, you begin to ride him, chasing the tongue that never stills, even for a second. It feels as though he’s everywhere, yet nowhere all at once.
A guttural, nearly primal sound breaks free from your chest, “Oh my god!”
Instead of focusing solely on making you finish as Josh would, he thrashes his head aggressively from side to side, lapping and sucking mercilessly on your clit with unexpected enthusiasm. He fills the room with the lewd, wet, pornographic sounds. They’re obscene, borderline louder than your own moans. His movements are sloppy, meant more for the show of it than for your pleasure.
He’s being a fucking tease, making you feel as though you’re close while being farther away than when you started. You let your frustration out with a harsh yank of his hair, causing him to growl into you.
He pulls you by the waist, throwing you down on the cushion beside him. Stunned, you stare at him wide-eyed and slack-jawed, “What the fuck?!”
He smiles at you, but the swipe of his thumb across his bottom lip does nothing to clean off his mouth. Your wetness coats the entire bottom half of his face, causing it to shine in the golden light. “Oh, we’re just getting started.”
With eyes glazed over, you look over to Josh, seeing him leaning against the kitchen island. It’s casual—  the way he’s standing with his legs crossed comfortably over each other. You’d ask him why he’s not by your side yet, but the feeling of Kai’s fingers trailing up and down the inside of your shaking leg distracts you from him.
You hear his giggle, “Having fun, baby?” Before you can process the words, he’s standing in front of you offering you a drink. You struggle to sit up until you can take it from him. You blink through the haziness clouding your vision, watching as Josh downs one of the shots of tequila in his hands. He winces through the burn, and with the other shot glass in his hand, he crawls onto Kai’s lap, straddling him.
“Oh, hello,” Kai purs, placing his large hands on Josh’s hips to rock him closer. He reaches for the second shot thinking it’s for him, but is surprised when Josh brings it to his own lips instead.
Josh smirks as he tips the glass back, but doesn’t swallow it this time. He takes Kai by the chin with his free hand and tugs him forward, silently asking him to open his lips. He instantly catches on and accepts, allowing Josh to spit the stream of tequila into his mouth. Kai swallows it without a single change of expression, looking up at Josh through his lust-heavy lids as he plucks the empty shot glasses from his fingers to set them on the table beside them.
Josh cradles his face in his hand and licks a languid stripe up Kai’s chin, cleaning the spilled liquor threatening to dribble down his throat. His tongue reaches Kai’s mouth, tasting you off his swollen lips. You witness the switch flipping inside Josh as the same hunger he felt for you in the backseat reemerges. He deepens the kiss and rushes to shrug off his shirt, becoming more aggressive with every pass of his tongue.
It’s when he starts frantically popping the buttons of Kai’s shirt, that he stops him with a hand around his throat. Kai nips at his bottom lip, correcting him through a dominant growl, “Slow down, pretty boy. We have nothing but time.”
Kai’s grip loosens around his neck once he hears Josh’s whimper, and lets his open hand slide down his tattooed body. They’re both breathing heavily, taking in the sight of each other this close. Kai admires the inked sparrows on either side of Josh’s chest with a gentle touch, following the linework of red poppies down his torso. Keeping eye contact, his hand finds Josh’s cock straining against his thigh beneath the tight leather of his pants.
Kai rubs his thumb across the head, giving an admission through a sultry voice, “I’ve thought this more times than I can count.”
Josh’s eyes flutter closed, and he starts to grind himself against Kai’s lap in response, whining, “Oh fuck. Just touch me. Please.”
Kai gives in to him, moving them both into a new position. Josh is now seated beside you with his back against the cushion, Kai stands to his feet in front of him. You take the chance, slipping in behind Josh to hold him between your legs.
He settles in, leaning back against your chest so you both can watch Kai take his time, popping each tiny button at a sinfully slow pace between his nimble fingers. Like ink strokes against pristine paper, his porcelain skin is decorated with a vast collection of black and gray pieces. He rids himself of the long-sleeve shirt, showing off the new pair of scorpions between his hips that are now at the tail end of the healing process.
He unhooks his leather belt with a single hand and kicks his dark jeans off to the side, leaving the black pair of boxer briefs. Even with the dark color of the satin fabric, you can see the distinct, and equally impressive, outline of his hardening cock.
He drops to his knees between Josh’s open legs, feeling across the slippery leather covering his thighs. You hold Josh tight, nestling against his ear, hearing the shallow breaths that flutter rapidly from his open lips.
Kai teases him with a featherlight touch of his fingertips across the bare skin of Josh’s stomach just to see the muscles quiver. He sucks at the vulnerable flesh between the tattooed roses between his teeth, causing Josh to groan with every mouth-sized fuschia mark mottled across its surface.
Just as Kai’s tongue is about to dip into Josh’s navel, he cries out through the dryness plaguing his mouth, “Don’t! It’s still healing.”
Kai clicks his tongue in disappointment, humming, “That’s a shame. I’ve been waiting to do that all night.” He continues his path, mumbling through the open-mouth kisses down the trail of hair, “What other surprises are you hiding?”
You consider mentioning the hidden tattoo below Josh’s waist, but Kai spots it before you can. He traces the tip of the leaves poking out with his finger, sighing with intrigue, “Oh? And what are you?”
His eyes flick up, catching Josh’s that are full of desperation before they move over to yours. Your brow wiggle sparks his curiosity even more, causing him to pop open the button of Josh’s pants.
He peels back the leather, discovering the cherry tattoo barely an inch from the base of Josh’s cock that’s still tucked away. You watch the gears turning in his head as he looks over its details before a knowing grin forms across his face.
“Is this…?”
“For you?” Josh answers with a shaky voice. He’s looking down at Kai’s fingers drawing over the outline. “Yeah. I got it done after that night you brought me to The Twisted Cherry for the first time.”
“Josh…” Kai trails off, collecting his thoughts. “We didn’t even do anything that night. Flirted for a few hours and had a few drinks, but…”
“What can I say…” Josh chuckles. “You have an effect on me.”
You had thought about how he had gotten the tattoo, but never about why. “That’s the real story behind that?”
“Yeah. It was about a year ago,” he explains. “I was probably still drunk when I walked into Marley’s shop that next morning.” He reminisces while you watch Kai fight the blush rising to his cheeks. “One of my more horny and impulsive decisions, but I’ll never regret it. The ladies love it.”
Kai’s gaze stays locked onto you. “I bet they do.” He lowers himself to place a kiss directly on the cherries. “To inspire a tattoo…and to think my ego couldn’t get any bigger.”
He bites the delicate skin — just as you had done weeks ago. Josh whimpers loudly, tightening his grasp around your forearm that’s draped across his chest. Kai pulls down Josh’s pants farther down his legs, causing his cock to spring free against his stomach. He takes them off the rest of the way, leaving Josh completely naked.
Kai takes Josh in his hand, wrapping his tattooed fingers around his length, and strokes him gently with a loose fist. “I’ve always known you’d have a pretty cock.”
Josh only responds with a delirious nod. He’s dying with anticipation, fighting the temptation to fuck himself into Kai’s hand. He’s restless and squirming against you to chase any bit of friction he can.
“Relax, baby. Are you gonna be good for him?” You coo softly against Josh’s ear, brushing your parted lips across the velvet plushness of his buzzed hair.
“Mmhmm,” he whines, furrowing his brow and dropping his mouth to form a perfect circle.
Watching Kai lick a stripe up along the underside of Josh’s cock ignites something inside you that you couldn’t have anticipated. You quickly realize he can pleasure him in a way that’s different from you. He knows what feels the best, what can get Josh there faster than you ever will. Jealousy could very well rob you of this moment, but instead, you take note and appreciate how Josh falls apart in your arms.
Kai seals his lips around Josh’s cock, forcing a strangled moan to break free, “Oh, fuck!”
You hook your chin over Josh’s shoulder and appreciate the sight before you. Josh has lost his ability to focus and throws his head back, extending his neck for you. You nuzzle into him, kissing along his clenched jaw up to his pierced ear. “Be a good boy for us and watch him, hmm?”
Curses slip past his lips through the pitchy moans, but he’s losing himself in the pleasure of it all. Whenever you’re going down on him, you’re too distracted by the drive to make him feel good to watch the expressions on his face or remember all the little sounds he makes.
You continue peppering affectionate kisses along the sharp edge of his jaw, sighing into the taut skin, “Does his mouth feel as good as you imagined it would?”
You know he can’t answer you. There’s no chance he can form a single coherent thought right now with how Kai’s spoiling his cock. Not a shred of the enthusiasm he had with you is being sacrificed for him. It’s messy, with the evidence left being Josh’s entire lap shining with his spit, but it’s deliberate. You give in to the urge and reach out to brush back Kai’s fallen curls draping across his forehead, guiding the rhythmic bobbing of his head.
“Look at him, Josh,” you say with an innocent lull as you pet his hair which is becoming damp with sweat with your free hand, encouraging him to open his eyes again. “You’ve fantasized about him sucking your cock, right?”
Sharing his point of view is almost too much for you to bear yourself. You can’t imagine how he must feel.
“Yeah…” Josh confesses as he finally blinks his eyes open again. Kai, sensing that he’s watching him, suddenly changes what he’s doing, pushing his cock deeper toward the back of his throat. Josh shakes his head frantically and clenches his fingers around your arms to ground himself to you. “Fuck! Wait! wait…You’re gonna make me cum if you keep doing that.”
Kai hears his plea and pulls his cock from his mouth and smiles, tapping the head against his rosy, wet lips as he pumps a tight fist now that it’s lubed with his spit. “I think that might be the point.”
“I know…I just don’t last long if I’ve been drinking. I-I just want it to last,” he manages to say in a breathy laugh, but he’s starting to shake uncontrollably with every downward stroke of Kai’s slick hand. “I… I…I’m so fucking close.”
“Let him make you cum, Josh. I wanna see it,” you beg with your sultriest voice, adding an emphasizing nip to his earlobe. The surface of his skin is so feverish to the touch that it’s sticking against every bare spot on your body.
Knowing it won’t take much more of his effort, Kai focuses his remaining attention on the special spot beneath the head of Josh’s cock — using the same rapid flicking motion of his tongue that he used on your poor clit minutes ago. You’re still so deprived, left to deal with the lingering denial while Josh reaches his own climax in your arms.  He unravels within seconds, and he tries to warn Kai, but the words never form past a grunt. His orgasm takes over without mercy, and all you can do is hold him against you as his cum glazes Kai’s flattened tongue.
Josh relaxes with his release, melting into your chest as the energy drains from his body. Kai licks him clean, swiping some that’s dribbled down the length of his cock with his finger before offering it to you. He gives you a taste by running it across your tongue, and you seal your lips around him. You lightly suck on his finger, making him stand to kiss you.
The kiss is far from subtle from his mouth being puffy and wet, the heat of his tongue slipping over yours. He tastes of Josh and tequila, coaxing you to your feet with a strong pull of his hands around yours. As he explores you, his fingers slip the straps of your dress off your shoulders, tugging the garment down to a pile at your feet. His hand is busy roaming down the length of your spine and cups over your ass, sending you forward with a powerful squeeze.
“Fuck…” he groans in response to your pitchy yelp, nipping his way down your throat. “I can see why he’s so obsessed with you.”
“And why’s that?” You hum, feeling your way down his toned stomach to play with the band of his boxers. He sighs as you kiss down his chest and lower yourself to your knees before him.
“Well, for one, you’re way kinkier than I thought you’d be.” He brushes your hair back, holding it at the crown of your head while you take off the only clothing still left on him.
Your giggle is cut short with a gasp at the sight of his cock displayed in front of you. He’s larger than you expected, slightly longer, but considerably thicker than Josh. It intimidates you at first, leaving you frozen in place while you stare.
“Holy shit.” You hear Josh’s breath of awe behind you. “You look so much bigger in person.”
Kai laughs, holding it at the base before giving himself a few strokes to show off. “Been looking at my account, huh?”
“You expect me not to?” Josh answers with his usual vibrancy returning to his voice.
Kai’s attention drops back to you kneeling at his feet. “What do you think, kitten?” His fingertips graze against your scalp while he taps the head of his cock against your bottom lip. “Is it too much for you to handle?”
“Show him how amazing you are, baby,” Josh encourages you, and the couch creaks with the shift of his weight as he sits up behind you.
You replace Kai’s hand with your own, feeling the weight of him as his steady heartbeat pulses against your palm. You’ve become so familiar with Josh, memorizing every detail of his body in the past weeks together, that Kai feels like an entirely new experience, and the pressure to perform suddenly overwhelms you.
Kai senses your hesitancy and tips your chin to look up at him. “Don’t get shy on me. Just relax and take your time, okay? It’s just a cock, baby.” Kai’s use of Josh's pet name instead of his own gives you a strange sense of comfort. It’s soft coming from him, meant to remind you of the fact that this is still the three of you.
Feeling a wave of confidence, you start by kissing the tip. They’re teasing and soft, warming you up to the delicate licks until you feel bold enough to swirl your tongue around him. You feel the rake of his dull nails across your scalp as he praises, “That’s it, kitten.”
You slide him deeper across your tongue, stretching your mouth around him. There’s no way you can fit all of him, so you have to compensate for what you can’t reach with your hand.
Josh’s hands caress your shoulders and neck, holding your hair back in a makeshift ponytail. “Fuck, you’re so hot.”
You’ve gotten a pretty good idea of what Kai’s into, and decide to put on a show of your own. You make a point to gag dramatically, letting your drool flow freely down his length.
He shudders as you twist your wrist furiously around him, “Fuck… that feels amazing. Nothing like seeing a pretty girl choking on my cock.”
Kai thrusts himself deep until you can no longer handle it. You’re forced to pull back and gasp for breath while the tears stream down your cheeks.
“You’re doing so good, baby.” Josh kisses your temple, giggling, “He does like it a bit rougher than me, doesn’t he?”
You laugh through your panting, looking up to see Kai breathing just as heavily as you. He runs his fingers through his messy hair, glancing down at you with a grin.
“I need to feel your pussy. Right now.” Kai steps away to sit on the couch beside Josh, taking you with him by the hand. “Come here.”
With the coordination of a newborn fawn, you crawl onto his lap. He pulls you into a kiss, lifting your ass enough to glide the head of his cock through your wetness. He meets your entrance after a few passes and tries to nudge himself inside. You suck in a breath of fear from the sheer size of him, and lock your body involuntarily, anticipating the sting. He shushes you against your lips, “Shhh, it’s okay. You’re fucking soaked, kitten. Just go slow.”
You brace yourself on his shoulders and start to lower your hips. Josh joins in by placing his hand between your legs, circling your swollen clit with the faintest touch of his middle finger.
Josh hums into that little spot below your ear, “Talk to us.” Kai nods in agreement, sitting perfectly still with his hands secured around your waist, giving you full control. A response for them is lost as you ease him into you, using the sensations on your clit as your guide to stretch yourself inch by inch.
You eventually settle onto his lap with him buried completely inside you, more thankful than ever that he prepared you for it. The full feeling he gives you is almost too much, threatening to push past your limits.
“Fuck, you’re so tight,” Kai groans, pushing himself against your cervix with a roll of his hips. He throws his head back, showing the massive beetle tattoo covering his throat. After stopping to adjust, you finally start to move, riding him with a cautious sway.
“I told you,” Josh murmurs, leaning in to kiss him. Kai captures his lips with far less control than earlier in the night. A flash of your greediness takes over, and for a moment, you want the kiss for yourself.
You let out a whine of protest, causing Josh to break away. He bites in his bottom lip, and sighs, “Did you think I forgot about you, baby?” He kisses you with the passion you so desperately crave. “Ride him for me. Show him how good your pussy feels.”
As you bounce on him, you realize how different Kai feels, hitting spots and stretching you out in ways that Josh doesn’t. But you can also admit that Josh makes you feel things that he doesn’t. Kai’s body feels harder, colder to the touch. His polished jade eyes take in your beauty, but they don’t cherish you the same way Josh’s honeyed ones do. He touches your body in the right places, but you know it’s how he would touch any other woman.
This is pure lust. Attraction with one goal in mind.
You do notice how gentle he’s being with you, knowing that he would rail you into this couch the second you say the word. He’s patient with a playful smirk on his face, accepting that this is about you and Josh more than it is for him.
Josh simply can’t keep his hands or his mouth to himself. He takes turns kissing you both, caressing you anywhere he can comfortably reach.
“I could fuck you for hours,” Kai admits, but once he realizes how you’re starting to tire, he shifts his intentions. “Here. Let’s turn you around.” He maneuvers you with a confident amount of strength, changing the position so you’re now facing away from him. You balance yourself the best you can, leaning back as he slips himself back inside you. He takes on most of the work, pumping his cock in and out of your pussy at a quicker pace.
Josh, wide-eyed, feels across your naked chest, holding your bouncing tits in the warmth of his palm. “You’re so beautiful…taking him so well.” He sucks one of your nipples into his mouth, wetting it before blowing a cool stream across it to watch it harden. He kisses his way down your stomach, settling on his knees between Kai’s legs — mirroring the position from minutes before.
There’s no coyness to his actions. He dives right in, licking a broad stripe over your needy clit. He sucks it gently into his mouth, pleasuring you in the way you desperately need it. His tongue draws your favorite patterns with the perfect pressure as Kai’s cock glides effortlessly inside your cunt.
It’s the depraved combination that catapults you right into your building orgasm. You resist your body’s response to close your eyes, wanting to watch him. You’ve missed him — the way his lust-riddled eyes float up your naked body until they meet yours. You feel the teeth of his smile against you just as his mouth leaves your clit. He then retrieves Kai’s cock from you, leaving you with a sudden empty feeling. You might’ve complained because of how close you are, but seeing him take Kai into his mouth renders you speechless.
You hear Kai’s muffled whimper beneath you as Josh licks your arousal off of him. He takes full advantage of the chance to play, going back and forth from rolling his tongue over your clit and sucking Kai’s cock.
Hearing Kai’s sounds mix with your own is too much for your drunken brain to process. Josh isn’t oblivious to your eagerness and impatience and guides Kai back inside you. “You have the prettiest pussy. I swear I could look at this all day.”
“Make her cum,” Kai commands through a faltering thrust, giving away that he’s a bit closer than he’d admit. He bends your back into the right curve, making sure to hit your g-spot while Josh smothers your clit.
Kai snakes his hand up around your throat, tilting your head back to rasp against the shell of your ear, “Does he look pretty between your legs?” When you don’t answer right away, he squeezes his fingers into your pulse points, but only with enough pressure to get your attention. You nod and whine, making him continue, “You love how he’s worshiping that pussy of yours while you take my cock?”
His sinfully enticing voice, paired with the silken feeling of Josh’s tongue and the slick glide of his cock sends you over the edge with no chance of returning. You fall apart within a matter of seconds, dependent on Kai’s ability to support you above him. Josh keeps your legs from snapping closed as you spasm and flutter around Kai’s cock. He laps you up as if you were a sweet syrup, riding you through the crashing waves of your climax.
“I’m gonna cum,” Kai warns as he rushes to pull himself out of you. Josh takes over the final strokes with an expert hand, causing his cum to cover and drip down your pussy. He plays in the mess, rubbing across your sticky clit with the pad of his thumb before licking you clean until overstimulation ravages the both of you.
Kai huffs an exhausted laugh through the shakes, letting you collapse against his chest. He rubs his hands over your body to smooth out the goosebumps rising to the surface and gives your pussy a teasing spank. “I think we should move this party to the bedroom.”
You roll your head against his shoulder listlessly. “Do you know the way?”
He chuckles, lifting you to your feet. “No, but I’m sure you could lead the way, kitten.”
You pad across the hardwood floor, feeling the soreness between your legs with every stride, and before you make it to the threshold, you peer over your shoulder. They’re both sitting, leaning back against the couch, watching you. You quirk a brow, teasing, “Well, are you two coming? Or am I gonna have to fuck myself in that big ole bed?”
Darkness swims in Josh’s pupils as he leans forward to rest his elbows on his knees. He studies you, biting back a mischievous grin before his eyes narrow. He suddenly lunges, taking off from the couch to chase after you. You scream, barreling your way down the hall to his bedroom.
Laughter and the thunderous sounds of his footsteps echo throughout the hallway. You make a quick turn, run into his room, and leap onto the giant mattress.
He grabs your flailing ankle, yanking you to the edge of the bed through your fit of giggles. He throws himself on top of you, boxing you in to tickle your sides and bite at the sensitive skin of your neck. “I can’t fucking wait to be inside you, baby,” he pants, grabbing your ass to throw you to the center of the bed while driving his hard cock against you. He hovers to kiss you, causing his necklace to dance on your bare chest. “Watching him fuck you first would have been torture if it wasn’t so hot.”
You reach for his cock, giving it a firm squeeze to feel it throb in your hand. “Now you know how it felt when he sucked you off before I could.”
You feel the vibration of his hums as he kisses you. Licking into your mouth, he rocks with the stroke of your hand around him, hooking your legs around his waist, and buries his face into your neck to mumble into the tacky skin, “Touche.”
With him in your grasp, you line him up with your entrance, persuading him with the slight rise of your hips. He doesn’t need more convincing, plunging into you with a single, fluid thrust.
He gasps, breathing the words into your tangled hair, “Fuck, I missed this so much.”
You hear Kai’s voice in the distance, “Starting without me?” He’s standing by the door, watching the two of you go at it. You can’t even be sure how long he’s been there. “You two do look great together. I should’ve brought my camera.”
You almost let your thoughts wander with the idea. “Maybe next time.”
Kai laughs, but Josh is distracted by you to join. He’s fucking you deep and slow, making up for lost time apart tonight. Even though the speed never changes, the power behind the thrust increases with each one. You can only clutch onto him, giving him your song of moans as a reward.
Normally the talkative one, Josh falls rather silent, soaking in all the seconds with you wrapped around him. You’re so consumed by him that you barely even notice that Kai’s moved to the bed and has started touching himself.  It’s only when Josh changes positions to sit up that you see the sluggish strokes of Kai’s wrist.
Impatient, Kai also sits up to kneel behind Josh, kissing a line from his shoulder to his ear. He whines from the feeling of Kai’s lips exploring him, letting his thrusts into you fall out of rhythm, “Fuck me. Please.”
Kai pulls away from Josh’s ear and stares blankly at him, breaking his nonchalance with a look of concern on his face. “Josh… are you sure? We don’t have to—”
Josh looks down and slips out of you, gauging your immediate reaction. You give him an accepting smile and glance at Kai to see worry pulling his dark brows together. “I want you to. I want this.”
Kai hesitates, thinking over Josh’s request in his head. “Have you…practiced?”
Josh lets out a bashful laugh as a blush pinkens his cheeks. “Of course.”
His answer comes as a little bit of a surprise to you despite knowing his kinkiness. Toys, especially those kinds haven’t been talked about between the two of you before. “You have? Why didn’t you tell me?”
He laughs it off, but you can hear his shyness, perhaps even nervousness in the throaty sound. “I guess I was waiting for the right time to bring up the fact I like anal.”
Kai quickly cuts in, resorting back to his sarcastic edge, “This is so fun. We are learning so much about each other, aren’t we?” He reaches forward, sinking a knee into the mattress to root around the drawer of Josh’s nightstand. Finding what he’s looking for, he fishes out a small bottle of lube and a condom before settling back into his spot behind Josh.
As Josh lowers himself back to you, a moment of realization strikes Kai. “Wait a minute… is this the first time?”
“Yeah,” Josh responds in a meek voice. You both hold your breath, anticipating the possibility that Kai might change his mind now.
He does the opposite, popping open the plastic cap of the bottle with his thumb, “We’ll just go nice and slow, right, kitten? I know how much you both like that.”
You watch Josh’s face contort as Kai drips lube over his body and giggles, “I swear, you have the cutest little ass.”
“Thanks,” Josh shudders, perhaps from the cold sensation or nerves, but he tries to take a steadying breath to calm himself.
Kai tosses the closed bottle onto the bed beside you, reassuring him in his most soothing tone, “Just using my fingers for now, alright?”
Josh whimpers from the contact, sewing his brows tight. You can’t see what Kai’s doing, only hearing the sounds it makes and Josh’s responses.
Something changes, making Josh groan loudly and tense up against you instantly. Kai’s voice is tight, but precise as he talks him through, “Relax, babe. I really don’t want to hurt you. So make sure to tell me if it does, okay?” Josh nods, resting his forehead against your shoulder. Kai then looks at you directly. “Play with his cock. Make him feel good.”
You blindly search for the bottle hidden in the duvet, squirting a generous amount in your open hand before wrapping it around Josh’s waiting cock. It’s surprisingly hard, twitching from your feminine touch. Glazed in an absurd amount of slippery lube, you jerk him while Kai’s fingers go to work.
The noises that come from Josh are ones you’ve never heard. He’s in a state of shameless bliss, his consciousness lost somewhere within his own body.
He finally croaks out in need, “I’m ready.”
Kai pauses, huffing with shortness of breath, “You don’t have to rush, Josh. I’m not small.”
“Kai, please,” Josh begs. It’s pathetic and sweet. It’s a side to him that’s never been explored by you until now.
You hear Kai peel the foil wrapper and the following latex sound of the condom being rolled down his length. He holds his waist steady, and after a few seconds, Josh bucks forward from the pressure. “Oh, shit! Fuck. Fuck. Oh, fuck. Hold on. Wait.”
Kai hears the panic in his voice and instantly stops all movements, but doesn’t pull away just yet. You pet Josh’s curls back, rubbing your thumb over the shell of his ear to bring him back to you. “Shhh, baby. Remember what he said. Relax for us.” His eyes open for the first time in minutes, showing blown pupils that are having trouble focusing. “You’re doing so good.”
“Do you want me to stop?” Kai asks in a calm, low voice. “I’m barely in.”
“No!” Josh shakes his head frantically, taking in a deep inhale. “Keep going.”
Even you feel the pressure of Kai slowly sliding himself inside Josh. It’s taking far longer than it did with you, as he makes sure to give him plenty of time to adjust to each added inch. Kai grunts, letting his own pleasure reveal itself. “I’m all the way.”
In a voice that barely sounds like his own, Josh pleads, “Please move.”
As Kai starts to slide in and out, you take the cue to stroke Josh at the same pace. He clenches the bedsheet in his fists so tight his knuckles turn ghost-white.
“That feels so fucking good.” A string of moans flows as freely as the beads of precum dripping from the head of his cock. Kai’s thrust becomes easier, finding a lazy pace as Josh relaxes and arches his back. Knowing he doesn’t have much time, you swirl your fingers around your overstimulated clit. You don’t care. You’ll do everything in your power to finish with him this time.
You play with yourself, sighing against his flushed cheek, “He making you feel full, baby? I’m so proud of you. You're taking his cock better than me.”
He’s delirious, and completely cock drunk. You don’t need him to tell you, because you feel him harden even more with his impending orgasm. “I’m so close… I can’t… please. Please, pretty please.”
You pump him even faster as you hold his head into the crook of your neck, taking every pitched cry into your memory. He lets go without a second warning, spilling his warm cum across your stomach. In a split second, Kai withdraws himself and quickly rips the condom off. He works himself, chasing the second high alongside you. You bring yourself there, and within a minute, you’re tipping over into another orgasm. Somehow you hear Kai’s sharp breath amongst your own as he paints the curve of Josh’s ass with his own release.
A minute passes with only ragged breaths shared between you. Without saying a word, Kai slides off the bed and disappears out of the bedroom. You then hear him walk down the hall and enter the bathroom, followed by the sounds of him opening up cabinets through the wall.
Josh lifts his head from you, asking, “You okay?”
“Me? Yeah, why?”
His eyes drop to his fingers mindlessly tracing the details of your bare chest. “I don’t know. A lot has happened and we really haven’t had the chance to talk…about it.”
There’s no doubt that there is a heap of things for you to discuss, but you’re not ready to deal with the weight of it all just yet. Wanting to push it off, you brush your fingers across the height of his cheekbone. “I’m sure it can wait until tomorrow.”
You feel his tension dissipate as he smiles softly and brings his eyes back to yours. “You’re right. You had fun though?”
“Fuck yeah.”
“Atta girl.”
Kai returns with his black boxer briefs on, a glass of water, and a few damp washcloths in his hand. “Hope you’re not talking about me.”
“Only the bad stuff,” Josh quips back over his shoulder, laying statue still as Kai wipes the cloth over his backside.
Kai offers the second washcloth to him after tossing the first into the hamper and sends you a wink. “That's all there is, I’m afraid.”
While Josh carefully separates himself from you and cleans the mess from your stomach and legs, Kai peruses the random contents littering the top of his dresser. He spots a jar of pre-rolled joints that catches his attention and raises it in the air, asking, “Care if I light one of these?”
Josh beams with a rush of excitement, “Fuck no! Lighter should be in the bowl next to you.”
You prop yourself up against the pillows and get comfortable in the sea of blankets, watching Kai bring the flame to the end of the joint. Josh finds his way back on top of you, resting his head against your chest. Kai blows out the heavy drag, and settles back on the bed, leaning up against the headboard with the joint hanging from his lip.
You spend what feels like ten minutes, passing the burning joint back and forth. Embracing the sleepy high taking over, you twirl the growing curls at the nape of Josh’s neck, dragging your nails gently down his back. Kai finally ashes the finished joint, extinguishing the cherry in the glass dish sitting on the nightstand before breaking the silence, “How are you feeling, Josh?”
He thinks on it for a moment until pushing out an exaggerated sigh, “A little drunk, really high, and like I got fucked in the ass. So pretty good for a Friday night I think.”

The Boxer - Simon & Garfunkel
Message In A Bottle - Taylor Swift
Flower Power - Greta Van Fleet
Build Me Up Buttercup - The Foundations
Annie's Song - John Denver
Today Was A Fairytale - Taylor Swift
As any other country in the Middle Ages, there was a king and a queen , and as any other other kingdom in the Middle Ages, they were misogynistic and the king needed a son, but his beautiful and wise queen never had a son, every single baby that they had… was a girl, and for some strange reason, the babies never survived more than one week alive, maybe it was because in that time everybody was dirty and they smelled like ass, or maybe… there was something darker behind the king. Even though it wasn’t a secret that the king was a misogynistic asshole, as I said… it was the Middle Ages so nobody really cared about it (maybe we could ask ourselves if we really live in the 21th century).
The king was trying to have son, but everything failed, so he took advantage of his power. He visited every single house of every single farmer with newborn babies in the whole country, and after a very extended search, he finally found a family with four children, a very cute little girl, two kids very similar to each other (in other words: twins) and the newborn SON of the family. The asshole king wanted to buy the newborn son, just like if the baby was a thing and not a human being, but as any other normal family would do, they said “No, absolutely no”. Apparently the king accepted the answer of the baby’s parents, but he could never accept a “no” for answer, so he paid a “professional kidnapper” to kidnap the baby. So a couple of nights after, the king forced the queen to announce that she was pregnant, so he could justified a baby coming out of nowhere in a couple of months. Nights after the big and fake announcement, the kidnapper finally stole the baby from his mother’s arms.
Fifteen years after, the boy grew up and now he was a teenager and obviously a prince named Samuel. He was more like his foster mother, relaxed and kind in comparison to the king, but after all, he grew up with a lot of privileges that maybe in his life as a farmer he could never had.
His real family never stopped looking for him, they never suspected something about the prince Samuel, even though his features were similar to rest of his siblings, the king really planned everything to justify his wife pregnancy, everything was on point.
Samuel’s sister at the age twenty years, she was already settled down with another farmer, meanwhile the twins Jacob and Joshua, at they age of nineteen they used to work as musicians on the street but due to the lack of money and food that they needed to survive, Josh went to Spain to learn the art of performing and smithy, meanwhile Jacob had to work as a servant for another family of farmers.
This family of farmers had a very gorgeous daughter, her name was Y/N. It was normal to see her riding her horse or playing around the fields and her dress was always covered of leaves. To be honest she was very quirky, she walked kinda funny, but I guess she knew it.
Y/N enjoyed teasing Jacob all the time, well… almost all the time, but the reality was that Y/N was deeply madly in love with him. Jacob was pretty handsome, his hair was starting to be longer, his body was athletic but not muscular, I guess that is normal for someone who works carrying stuffs, cleaning and going everywhere.
Our dear Jacob was also in love with Y/N, but they never said something to each other, he was very shy and introverted, so he only showed his love saying "As you wish" while he nodded at her.
One day, the king was looking for a wife for Prince Samuel, so he sent the Counts to look every single and virgin girl in the country. The Counts arrived to Y/N's farm and they immediately talked to their parents.
"As you may noticed, we are here because the King is getting older and the Prince Samuel is closer to the perfect age for being the king, so... according to the population records, you have a daughter, can we see her?" asked the Count.
Y/N's parents called her and when she was there the Count was seeing Y/N carefully, he noticed that indeed, Y/N was a very beautiful girl, her soft hair, her bright eyes, everything in her was perfect, except for the fact that she didn't like to take showers.
"Good Morning, young lady. I'm very sorry if we are bothering you or if we interrupt your day, but we are here because we have wonderful news for you." said the Count with calm.
"Oh! Really? News for me?" Y/N asked bowing her head to the side.
"Yes! Well, the King is looking for a new Queen."
"So... do you want me to look for a new Queen?" she said.
"No, my darling, is not like that. We want you to be the new Queen" said the Countness.
"So... that means that you want me to marry the King? Isn't he very old for me? I mean... he's like 67 years old man" said Y/N impressed by the weird proposal.
"No, no, no" the Count laught "You would be marrying the Prince Samuel. I know that you are older than him, just a little bit older than him, but that's not a problem, we can lie to the villagers just like the king does and everybody is going to be happy."
Y/N didn't like a single word that the Count was saying.
"You'll be rich, you can have an entire room only for you..."
"I already have it" Y/N interrupted the Countness.
"How I was saying" she sighed "you can have exclusive education and a very handsome prince."
"I don't need a handsome prince, I already met the prettiest and most talented man that I want to spent my life with. I know how to read, I'm not stupid, maybe I'm not rich but at least I'm happy. Why are you looking for a normal girl if there are a lot of beautiful princesses out there?" Y/N said.
Jacob was sweeping the leaves, although he was working, he was also paying attention to the conversation with the Counts, so when he heard that Y/N said something about <<she already met the prettiest and most talented man>> he stopped sweeping for a couple of seconds. His little heart ached, but then... he reminded that she doesn't have pontential fiancés, she hadn't even met any other men but him <<Who could be that man she mentioned if he only knows me?>> he asked to himself.
"Well..." the Count began to laugh nervously "We are just following the King's order. Since you're very young to understand the situation, we are going to talk about this with your parents."
"If our girl said no, it's no" her dad said.
"For God's sake! Are you sure to reject an offer like this?" the Countness asked to Y/N showing indignation.
"I don't even know how the Prince Sam looks like" Y/N said.
Jacob began to move closer to listen a little more of the conversation, but he kept sweeping. The Countness looked at the young servant a she pointed at him "The Prince looks a little bit like your servant." Jacob stopped, his face turned pale and he was just looking nervously at Y/N.
"Like Jacob?" the beautiful girl asked surprised.
"Like me?" asked the confused young servant.
"Yes, yes, both have very similar features, I would think that they could be brothers if I wasn't the Countness" she giggled "Both are very... very handsome, their noses are very... particular and their delicate and their kissable lips" she began to move closer to Jacob until she gently slid her finger on Jacob's cheek, he took two steps backwards and he ran to his little house next to the horses. He was obviously uncomfortable for the actions of this woman and because she said that Prince Samuel and him shared some features <<What if the prince is my brother?>> he thought.
After the akward moment, the Counts tried to convince Y/N and her parents, but everything ended with Y/N saying "I don't care if the prince looks like the most handsome man I ever met" sadly Jacob didn't hear that.
______________________________________________________________
The moon was shining in the sky, the wind was brushing every leave of the trees. The horses were sleeping and next to them, there was Jacob's little house where he slept. He was playing a very sweet melody on his lute, Y/N heard him and she thought it was a good idea to finally tell him that she is deeply madly in love with him.
Y/N stayed a couple of minutes standing in front of Jacob's little house, she was very nervous. She knocked the door and Jacob stopped playing. When he opened the door Y/N without hesitation started to talk.
"I know that you find me annoying and I interrumpted you, but a couple of days ago I realised that I'm deeply madly in love with you and the only way to show my love for you was pissing you off, the thing here is that I realised that it's a very awkward behaviour, so I just wanted to visit you because I had the violent urge to tell you that I love you" she said without taking a single break to breath.
Jacob was completely astonished, he was petrified as a rock, he didn't move or say a single word.
"C'mon... say something" she begged.
"Something?" he furrowed his brows.
"You know exactly what I'm talkin about, Jacob"
He just slammed the door keeping his astonished face, of course that Y/N found that very disrespectful "Don't fool yourself, I don't like you that much either" she said trying to hide the fact that Jacob had broken her heart in million pieces "Everything was just because that old ass woman called you handsome, right? She's too old for you, Jacob!" she yelled.
Jacob opened the door again "No, it wasn't" he said quietly.
"Then? Why don't you just say something about what I told you?" Y/N desperately asked.
"Y/N... I love you too, since the very first minute I saw you, I had an enormous crush on you. But I'm just a servant, what can I do for you more than obeying your orders? Every single time, trust me" he gently took her hands "Every single time I said -as you wish- it was just me saying that I love you. You're the only reason that I compose melodies when I'm supposed to be sleeping, every single melody I play is for you." he gently kissed Y/N hands "I was waiting for this moment, my dear Y/N."
Our beautiful Y/N was melting, she was so happy to hear Jacob's words, she couldn't believe that her love for him was mutual. Once inside the house, Jacob played almost all his songs that he composed. It was so touching that the musician and the muse were together enjoying the music and finally... expresing their love for each other with shy kisses, tender glances and fleeting caresses full of innocence.
Finally they fell asleep, but the sound of the birds singing in the morning woke them up.
"Oh my God!" Y/N exclaimed getting up after resting on Jacob's chest "The sun is rising! Jacob! Wake up!"
He yawned and the first thing he did was looking at Y/N "Oh...good morning" he smirked "But eveyone is still sleeping, come here."
"I have to go, my parents don't know that I'm here" she said straightening her dress "But anyways, I'm so happy that we spent the night together with your wonderful music. Since the first time I heard you, I was completely mesmerized with your talent" she kissed softly his forehead.
"And I'm very happy too because you stayed here with me and because I know that our feelings are mutual, also... you heard me, I was always thinking and imagining how it would be the day you heard all the songs that you inspired me."
After spending a couple more minutes together, before Y/N left Jacob's little house, she said with a huge smile on her face"What if we compose more music... together this night?"
"As you wish, Y/N. I'll wait you here, my love."

Chapter 4: First Contact
Charlotte stood in front of the door of a large apartment complex. It was a matte brown color with a gold number two hundred and twenty-two above the peep-hole. Charlotte shifted her weight awkwardly as she debated what to do. Knock? Try the knob? Who was she kidding? They probably caught her scent the moment she exited the elevator. There weren’t many humans crawling the city streets at this hour–in fact, she was pretty sure Mr. Velasquez’s employees were the only humans living anywhere in the vicinity.
Charlotte looked behind her, towards where Julio was faltering by the elevator. He looked like he wasn’t sure if he should stay until she got in or leave them alone. Charlotte decided for him–she waved him off and he took the direction almost too well. Julio gave her a knowing nod and stepped onto the elevator. His expression was stern, but not without emotion. Worry was at the forefront of his mind at the moment. He kept his eyes on Charlotte until the door closed.
Charlotte looked back at the brown door separating her from the others again. Twenty-four hours ago, she’d been out of her mind with anxiety. Her mind raced from hope to sorrow, to anger, to longing–and yet, after feeling those emotions so vividly, she was clearly not done with the emotional ride. She was more anxious than ever.
But it was time to face her fears–she’d been still for long enough. She’d been standing in front of this door for longer than she wanted to. Despite only standing in front of it for no more than a minute, she understood that this partition between her and the boys had been here for years now. Years ago, she’d decided to look through the peep-hole and saw whoever was in view at the time. But now, she was the one being observed, no longer safe behind the door.
Charlotte took a deep breath and before she could talk herself out of it–knocked on the door.
For a moment, there was only silence. But then she heard it–the unmistakable sound of someone walking up to the door. Charlotte hadn’t realized it, but she forgot to exhale. The air was caught in her throat and it refused to leave. The door swung open—
Charlotte was immediately pulled into a hug.
After releasing the air she was keeping, Charlotte felt long brown hair tickle her nose. She recognized the color, the texture, the smell. Charlotte didn’t know if it would be okay if she hugged him back, but that thought was quickly dispelled when she felt his grip on her get tighter.
“Sam,” Charlotte breathed.
“You’re really here,” Sam said breathlessly.
“I’m here.”
Sam let go first and then grabbed Charlotte’s hand to lead her inside. Charlotte took in the room quickly. The room was bathed in a soft yellow light, just like her bedroom. It looked like she’d just stepped into the living room. There were two plush white couches facing each other, a fuzzy rug was sprawled between them on the floor.
Charlotte’s eyes first caught Josh, his soft curly hair bouncing as he walked quickly over to her. Sam stepped out of the way and Charlotte lifted her arms so that Josh could pull her into a soft, warm hug.
He chuckled quietly, “Look at you,” he said. His eyes warmed at the sight of her, here, healthy, and alive.
Charlotte felt her cheeks warm, she looked away, growing uncomfortable with all this attention on her. She looked up, her eyes meeting Danny’s. However, when they did, Danny seemed to shrink into himself.
“Where–
“He’s not coming,” Josh said in a voice that hinted at irritation.
Charlotte could feel the unmistakable feeling of disappointment well in her chest. She swallowed hard, trying to find her voice. She wanted to play it off, like it was fine. But it wasn’t fine. She was devastated. She’d spent the last twenty-four hours convincing herself that she could see him again–that she should see him again.
And he didn’t even show up.
Charlotte put on a smile regardless. “It doesn’t matter, it’s still nice to see you guys.”
“It’s nice to see you too,” Danny said, clearly trying to move past the elephant in the room.
Charlotte was thankful for the redirection, but she could not help but wonder how much Danny was keeping to himself again.
“My plane landed an hour ago–I jumped on the next flight home once I heard from Danny.”
Charlotte looked at Sam, taking in his radiant features. He was practically glowing with excitement. His hair was longer, touching his shoulders. The smile plastered on his face threatened permanence.
“You’ve been traveling a lot, I hear.” Charlotte said.
Sam beamed. “I’ve seen so much, I’d love to show you my pictures.”
Charlotte smiled, “Absolutely. All I’ve seen of the world is forest fires these days.”
“Not before she eats,” Josh says, gesturing towards a table in the kitchen. “I made some food, it’s probably nothing compared to roasted opossum, but it might just suit your tastes.”
“We have plenty of time,” Danny said, picking up pillows and blankets that were tossed on the couch beside him.
Charlotte looked at them curiously.
Sam looked down at her, smiling again. “We wanted to do something familiar with you,” Sam said.
“A sleepover seemed like the perfect way to spend our reunion.”
Charlotte looked at each of them, her eyes threatening to well with tears. She had several sleepovers with Venny–and after many hissy fits–they eventually included Quincy. Charlotte let Venny brush her hair, and they all laughed and danced and watched movies. Then, when the sun came out, they’d go on a quick monitored walk before bed. In the stillness of the morning, they’d talk about their futures, their fears, their hopes.
Charlotte didn’t realize how much she wanted this. To get a taste of the same closeness she’d experienced with the boys all those years ago. She couldn’t help but laugh at the difference this time. Here they were; a city miles away from where they’d met and said goodbye. She was no longer in dire straits. She was comfortable, happy even, with her life and what had become of her.
“A sleepover sounds great,” Charlotte smiled.
Tumblr media
Charlotte raised herself from her spot on the couch slowly, making sure not to wake Sam or Danny as they slept at her feet on the rug. She tip-toed over to the kitchen, eager to get a glass of water. She’d spent so much of this reunion talking with the boys about their adventures these last five years.
Josh filled in a lot of the missing information about his rallies and movements. He was working to better species relations between humans and vampires. It was a noble cause–but Charlotte understood too well that the division between them extended beyond strength and opportunity. Her time at Somerset haunted her to this day. As much as Josh talked about seeing humans as equals, Charlotte knew that her people had been reduced to livestock. Humans like Charlotte and Quincy were a rarity among the bulk of her species.
But there was nothing she could do. Josh was so hopeful, so full of life thinking that he was working towards a greater future on her behalf. Who was she to inform him of everything that she saw in Somerset? What she’d heard? What she’d felt? She’d seen humans that couldn’t walk, or talk, or feed themselves, clucking after one another in high pitched whines. These people–her people–were no longer Josh’s equal. She didn’t believe that they ever could be.
Sam explained that he didn’t have much of a reason to travel like he was. Charlotte let him give half-baked responses and confusing answers. She didn’t need to know why he refused to stay tied to one location. What she was more interested in hearing about were the places he visited. All of the exciting cultures and food and scenery. He spoke of mountains and lakes and something called an Eiffel Tower. He’d poured over photo after photo–explaining everything he remembered. He took special care to explain human-made landmarks and their cultural significance.
It was all fascinating–every question she had, he seemed to have an answer for. However, to Charlotte it seemed like she was learning about some different species. How could humans be capable of building such large monuments and tombs? The concept of leaving a mark on the world was foreign to her–why would you want anyone to know you were there? How could you be so reckless with your own safety? Did they not have anyone they wished to protect?
Regardless, the photos were pretty. Charlotte didn’t care for a lot of the buildings–but the ones Sam showed her of nature? Breathtaking. Awe-inspiring. Mountainsides, forests, something called an ocean. Such beautiful places. Sam told her that many of his photos needed to be taken using a timer, as natural light was often the only way to capture these places in their true form. He told her how dangerous it all was–how locals called him crazy for risking so much just for a single photo of a sunny mountain.
But Charlotte understood his sacrifice–and without it, she would not know Sam as well as she did right now.
Danny had been doing a lot of networking within his position at his father’s company. He was hoping to make a lot of meaningful connections while he learned from the best of the best. Danny did not share his reason for this, but he seemed very serious about everything. Charlotte tried not to pry.
Charlotte reached the kitchen quickly, her eyes adjusting to the dark without the screen of the TV shining its blue light around the room. She stopped at a cupboard and felt around for a glass slowly. Once she pulled one out, she placed it under the spigot and filled it slowly. She enjoyed the sound of the running water, remembering a time when it was scarce. She pressed the glass against her lips and drank greedily.
“Can’t sleep?”
Charlotte looked over at Danny in the archway of the kitchen. He was nothing but a shadow with the light of the TV shining against his back. She leaned against the counter, swallowing slowly. She shook her head.
“Me either,” Danny said quietly.
Charlotte could tell that there was something on his mind. She put her glass down and stayed quiet while he struggled with what he wanted to say.
“I’m sorry,” Danny uttered out quietly.
“You didn’t force me to be here,” Charlotte said, dismissing him with her palm. “I had a great time tonight.”
For a moment the two of them just stood there, until Danny’s apology really registered within her. He wasn’t apologizing for their meeting. He wasn’t apologizing for persuading her to see Sam and Josh again. Instead, he was apologizing for who wasn’t here. Who’s absence she felt even more now in the quiet of Josh’s apartment. She’d seen his face plastered all over the walls, in small frames and large ones. She’d seen things that were likely his lying around on end tables and chairs all around her.
“You…you don’t have to…” Charlotte trailed off. “It’s not…”
Charlotte slowly turned her back to him, feeling very exposed all of a sudden. She wanted to assure him that he had done nothing wrong–wanted him to know that he was not to blame. The pain she was feeling right now was not because of Danny.
“Charlotte,” came his knowing whisper.
Charlotte couldn’t stop the tears from spilling from her eyes. The sound of his voice drew them out of her–these horrible thoughts she was trying to ignore. But, just like always, Danny had a way of seeing right through her. She caught a sob before it burst out of her, her shoulders collapsing inwards with the force. She couldn’t stop shaking or feeling the oppressive weight of her own hubris.
Why would he bother seeing someone who didn’t want to see him?
Charlotte knew that she was arrogant for thinking that Jake would drop everything in his life and come running the minute Danny told him about her. Like he was waiting on bated breath for Charlotte to return to him. How stupid could she have been? They had only known each other for a second–why would she ever think that he would waste another on her?
Charlotte felt Danny’s arms collect her, their strength enveloping her entirely.
“It’s okay,” Charlotte lied. “I’m alright,” she reassured absolutely no one.
Danny stroked her hair as she cried, and, eventually, Charlotte didn’t have a single tear left. Within the next few moments, Danny was able to convince Charlotte to rest on the couch. After she was tucked up nice and snug, Danny sat at her feet and watched as her breathing became even.
Tumblr media
It was the wee hours of the evening, when the sun had just gone down and twilight was upon the city, when Danny stirred on the couch. He inhaled deeply and blinked his eyes open. He looked to his left, where Charlotte was still curled up on the couch. To his right, he saw Sam still asleep on the floor and Josh rolled onto his stomach on the other couch. Danny slowly rose from his position at Charlotte’s feet and stumbled a little as he walked towards the bathroom.
When he was finished up, he came back into the living room to see a figure standing at the doorway. He was shocked at first, but after realizing who it was, he sighed.
“You didn’t tell me you’d be meeting at Josh’s.”
Danny watched as Jake’s eyes swept over Charlotte, taking every inch of her in with what Danny could only assume was hesitation. Jake was faltering slightly, his hands opening and closing with an urge he wasn’t keeping at bay well enough.
“We decided last minute,” Danny said quietly.
Jake closed his eyes and turned towards the door. “I’ll leave,” he said.
Danny narrowed his eyes at Jake as he walked out the door. Before Danny knew what he was doing, he followed Jake into the hallway outside of the apartment.
“You’re really doing this?” Danny said, harsher than he meant to.
Jake looked back at him. “Yeah, I am.”
Danny felt the anger well up within him–burning a hole in his chest. “You were the first one I called,” he said bitterly. “You were the one I thought needed to know.”
Jake said nothing.
“Why didn’t you want to see her?”
Jake stared at Danny like he was looking through him. Danny clenched his jaw. He hadn’t seen Jake in months, the two of them were in completely opposite worlds. While Danny had been off working for his father, Jake had been who knows where, doing who knows what. Danny searched Jake’s eyes for something–anything to explain why he was being so distant. The first thing he noticed was the bags underneath them. Then, he noted his unkempt hair and muted visage. Danny’s expression grew softer, and he looked at Jake with pleading eyes.
“Jake, what’s wrong?”
Despite the obvious tone shift, Jake turned away from Danny and started down the hallway to the elevator.
Danny crossed his arms and watched him leave. He gave himself a moment before turning back towards the apartment. There, he saw Josh waiting just inside the door, leaning against an end table.
“He saw her?” Josh asked, eyes finding Danny’s.
Danny nodded.
“And nothing changed…” Josh crossed his arms and looked over at Charlotte.
“What do you know?”
Josh shook his head. “Not enough.”

The Cattle Driving Stranger - Cowboy!Danny Wagner
a/n: i wrote this amongst the AI images trend and tbh i kinda like cowboy danny 😌 also this idea comes from @maud-gone and she's also the one who told me i should post it so here we are :)
summary: a stranger accidentally stumbles onto your property and your father takes advantage of this. however, you can't help but fall for the tall, mysterious cowboy
warnings: mentions of guns (one character pointing one at another), mentions of blood/wound
word count: ~ 5.5k
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ever since your father injured his leg, he hasn’t been able to herd the cattle that you own very well. He started off by having a family member do it for free, but after a few times, they decided they wanted to be paid, and your father couldn’t do that right now.
You were working your own job at the local diner, so that was helping some income, but times were tough at the moment. Until a random stranger stumbled upon your property.
You were coming home from your day shift, when you see your father on the porch, with his gun drawn, pointing it at a man mounted on a horse. His hands were in the air, letting you know he wasn’t a threat to anyone.
“Who are you?!” Your father shouts. The man dismounts his horse, keeping his hands in the air.
“My name’s Danny. I’m lost and not sure where I’m going,” he says.
“This is private property, young man.”
“I wasn’t aware, but now that I am, I will leave as soon as I can. But I ask one thing, if I can clean the wound that I sustained while riding through the night.” He points to his bicep, where the linen cloth of his undershirt has been sliced open, revealing a nice gash that was bloodied.
Your father lowers his gun and takes a seat back in the rocker.
“Come on in. But now it’s my turn to ask you something.” Danny walks up the stairs cautiously as you stay put on the side of the house, out of view from him. “Ever herd cattle?”
Your eyes roll at your father’s desperation, until you hear Danny chuckle.
“Yes, actually. I was my family’s herder until they sold the farm and cattle. Ever since then, I’ve been roaming, trying to find a place to settle down, and haven’t found one yet.”
Because you were already exhausted from this morning, you decide to make yourself known to get into the house and settle down for the day. You walk around and come into view of your father and the stranger, and immediately, Danny is entranced by you.
He has never seen a woman so beautiful, so perfect, even after a long and tiring day of work.
“(Y/N), this is Danny. Caught him trespassing and it looks like he’s gonna be staying for a while.”
Both you and Danny look to your father in confusion.
“I can give you a place to stay if you’re willing to be my new herder. I’ve been unable to get around with his goddamn ankle, so if you wouldn’t mind helping out around here, you’re more than welcome to stay in the guest room.”
“Thank you, sir. I appreciate the sentiment very much.” With that, you walk inside, past Danny, leaving the two men to sit and converse on the porch until it was time for dinner.
You didn’t see much of Danny that night, he stayed in his room to eat dinner and kept to himself; though you expected this, really, what was he supposed to do? Suddenly open himself up to you guys, when your father had his gun pointed at him when they first met?
In the following weeks, Danny finally starts to feel a little more welcome. Your father was warming up to him a lot and they had been getting along really well. You liked the fact that your dad had someone else besides you to talk to, and you were very thankful for all the work Danny did to help him out.
However, you remained weary of Danny. You didn’t really know his true intentions, if he was going to just up and leave one day after he gets tired of staying in one place for too long. You feared he was just like the last few cattle drivers, leaving your father with no warning, and going back to square one.
But he reassured you that Danny was here to stay at least for a while. He boasted every second he could about how good of a herder he is, and how Danny loves it here.
So, on one of the days you have off, you stood on the porch and watched Danny in action. And sure enough, he rounded up all of your cattle with ease, doing it so effortlessly, like it was second nature to him. He concentrated hard with every move of his, and the cattle listened to him with no issues. You were very surprised at this, and soon, this became your norm.
You spent most of your mornings with your dad on the porch, watching Danny herd, and it never got boring. Every day was the same, but with each time, you could feel your attraction for Danny deepening. And you never realized, but he always took a moment to admire you from afar as well.
One morning, it was nice and cool out, compared to the recent heat. Danny was out there, as usual, gathering all of the cattle towards the small open gate. With every single cow through, he locked the gate and rode back to the stables to put his horse back. Finally, he emerges and makes his way towards the house, walking up the steps where you were holding a glass of water for him that your dad asked you to get him.
“Thank you,” he mumbles, taking the glass from you. He drops into the second rocker, taking his hat off and wiping the sweat away from his forehead, and your dad stands to pat his back.
“Nice work today, young man. Now I have to go into town to visit my doctor, and he’s going to be assessing me over the next couple days, so I won’t be home until Saturday. (Y/N), don’t scare Danny off. There’s some leftover soup for dinner. I’ll see y’all later.”
With that, your dad hops in his car and drives into town, leaving you and Danny alone for the night. Something that has yet to happen. It made you nervous, but Danny was a good guy, right?
Dinner was filled with an awkward silence. You had no clue how to converse with Danny, being alone, you weren’t sure what his likes and dislikes were, or if he even wanted to talk at all. So, you stayed quiet, reading the newspaper that your father left on the table.
Once the sun had set and the moon appeared, and a cooler temperature had replaced the desert heat, you step out onto the front porch to clear your head. Your mind was reeling with nerves and feeling like a terrible host for possibly making Danny feel uncomfortable.
“Is it always this peaceful out here?” A voice interrupts your moment. Turning, you find Danny, dressed in the night clothes that your dad had given him.
It was a simple old linen nightshirt, and he was also dressed in just his briefs. Something you tried not to focus on, but it was really hard to ignore. His thick thighs fully on show for you, how could you not look? Respectfully, of course.
“Yeah. It’s a great way clear your head after a long day.”
Danny cautiously leans against the railing next to you, staring out into the vast land that was your home. He takes in the sight of the cattle barn, where he would be next morning, letting all the cattle out to graze and get some space for the day.
“How long have you been a herder?” You ask him, keeping your eyes forward. Danny, however, looks over at you with a small smile on his face.
Ever since he was given the chance to stay, he had become so taken by you. He wanted to talk to you, but you always gave off the energy that you didn’t want to get to know him. He understood of course, a random stranger is suddenly staying with you after all you’ve known is just you and your dad, he wasn’t expecting you to trust him right away.
He also hated feeling like he was intruding on your lives, but your father reassured him that it was just because you were shy and closed off in general.
So right now, and especially after how dinner went, he was susprirsed to hear your question for him.
“Ever since I was young. My father was a farmer and he taught me from the age of five how to herd. Since then, I’ve learned to do it on my own and became the family’s driver.”
“You said they sold the farm and everything, why was that?” Danny shuffles his feet a little, his mouth falling open but nothing coming out, and right away, you knew you crossed a boundary. “I’m so sorry, I shouldn’t have asked that.” Danny shakes his head, and offers you a small smile.
“No, don’t worry about it. It’s okay. It’s something I haven’t exactly had time to really process or talk about with anyone, and I’m not entirely sure how to even explain it.” You nod awkwardly, feeling your heart race due to the anxiety pumping through your body.
“Um, what happened to your arm?” You ask this time, wanting to steer away from the previous topic.
“I got scraped on some barbed wire while trying to get through someone else’s land. They chased me off, and I ended up here.”
“It’s all healed now, though, right?” Danny smiles and you finally look at him. You try hard to keep the gasp in that was threatening to escape.
He was incredibly beautiful, although this was something you knew, but actually taking his features in, you realized just how gorgeous he is. Especially in the moonlight. The curve of his nose standing out against the night sky, the light from the moon casting onto it, only adding to the beauty. His pink cheeks and structured jawline, and not to mention his curls that were always hidden under his hat and pulled back during the day.
You don’t notice how long you’re staring at him until he clears his throat awkwardly. You softly apologize and Danny just chuckles in response. You couldn’t fall for this man. You barely knew him, but he was so pretty.
“Um, would you maybe want to, uh, join me in herding the cattle tomorrow? I mean, taking a horse out there with me and watching from up close rather than ogling at me from the porch?” Your cheeks feel like they’re on fire at this point.
So he’s noticed. Great.
“Well, I would hate to get in your way, I don’t know much about herding and I don’t want to mess up how you work with them.”
“Sitting on a horse out of the way ain’t goin’ to mess with them, darlin’.” Your heart flutters at the nickname and now you are feeling very drawn to this man.
“Sure,” you agree after a couple more minutes of him explaining how it would even work.
“You don’t hav’t do anything, just sit there and look pretty. Maybe we can also go for a little ride after.”
“I’d love that, Danny.”
Just as planned, you got up bright and early, dressing in your favorite outfit, and headed downstairs to find Danny preparing breakfast for the two of you. He had made some eggs with toast, scrambled, just the way you like them.
After breakfast, he brings you out to the stables and takes his horse while you let out the horse that you always take out riding, Sunshine.
You follow him over to the cattle barn where he begins his work, letting out all of the cows and bulls that you and your father own. He does his job of letting them into the open area for the day, closing the fence with ease once they all get through.
He rides back over to you and you follow him away from the land, down a little trail that leads to an open field. Your eyes remain on the back of his form, the way his loose curls bounce with every gallop of his horse, and just the way he looks overall.
You continue riding until you come to a huge tree with a shaded area. Danny dismounts his horse, you doing the same. He ties both horses to another nearby tree and allows them to graze and rest while he sits down against the trunk of the larger tree , motioning for you to join him.
“Did I do a pretty good job?” He wonders, referring to his herding. You giggle and nod, looking out at the open space in front of you.
“I’d say you did. I can see why my dad has kept you on for as long as he has, and with no pay.” Danny hums in response, knowing that it would come up sooner or later.
“Right now, I’m just happy to have a roof over my head. And I’m happy to help out your father when he’s unable to do the work himself.”
“He’s very thankful for that, and honestly so am I.”
Danny’s eyes fall onto your face as he waits for you to continue.
“We’ve been struggling quite a bit, with my job at the diner being the main source of income and from the few cattle we sell and trade for. But it’s been hard finding people to buy your livestock when they haven’t had a chance to properly graze or roam around in an open space. So the fact that you’re helping out, I’m sure he’ll give you a cut of the money.”
“I don’t care about the money. I never have. The way he explained how difficult it’s been, I’m just glad to help out any way I can, and again, for him to give me shelter, I don’t need anything else in return.”
Silence falls between you, but not like the silence from dinner the previous night. This feels comfortable, like neither of you have to say anything to fill the void. It was nice.
“My family lost our home,” he quietly says. Your head whips to him in confusion, he’s really going to tell you this now? After last night and how awkward it was?
“Oh, I’m so sorry.” He nods and looks down at his hands, fiddling with them awkwardly.
“My father left us when I was ten, and my mom struggled raising three kids on her own. But she never said anything. So just a couple months ago, she sat us down and told us she sold everything because she wasn’t able to pay for the house, the farm, the cattle, and feed all of us. I got angry, took my favorite horse before she was able to sell them, and left. I’ve been roaming around ever since, managing with the money that I had of mine from my job back in my town, and somehow made it this far.” You could tell he was feeling very vulnerable at the moment, and you really didn’t know how to respond.
“That must’ve been super hard to hear,” you murmur. Looking over, you see Danny’s hands shaking slightly, so you reach over and grab them in yours, to let him know everything would be okay.
He smiles affectionately at you and you do the same. His beautiful brown eyes shine in the sunlight, though shielded by the brim of his worn-down hat. A scarf adorned his neck, amongst three silver necklaces, resting perfectly against his exposed tanned chest.
He was definitely a sight to look at, and you could spend hours telling him how beautiful he is.
“It definitely wasn’t easy, but I’m finally starting to move past it, thanks to you and your father for takin’ me in.”
“So, you plan on staying for a while longer?” Danny chuckles lightly and knocks his knee into yours.
“Yes ma’am. Why? Don’t wanna see me go so soon?” His tone is lighthearted and you can tell that he’s joking, but your expression soon shuts his laughter down.
“We’ve had a few cattle drivers in the recent weeks before you showed up, that helped him, but when they realized there was no pay and not much else, they left. Didn’t even let my dad know. I really don’t want him going through that yet again, it’s why I haven’t been so…open to getting to know you because I was expecting you to just up and leave at some point.”
Danny’s hand falls to your thigh, softly rubbing the cloth of your pants.
“I’m not leaving, I promise. I have more than one reason to stay.” Smiling softly, you gaze into his eyes, and for a moment, they flicker down to his plump lips. Your mind doesn’t even register your actions and before you know it, you are kissing Danny as softly as ever, but just enough to let him know that if this isn’t okay, he can stop it at any moment.
But his reaction is something you were not hoping for. When you pull away, your eyes flutter open, and you were expecting Danny to reciprocate it. However, he instead rises to stand and mounts his horse, riding away as quickly as he can.
You sit there, dumbfounded, feeling so incredibly stupid for what you’ve done. You were now convinced you fucked everything up, specifically your father’s chance at having a herder. And you had no one else to blame but yourself.
You read into the signals Danny was merely sending you, you played too much into your little crush on him, and now he was probably gone for good because you once again, overstepped a boundary that you knew you most likely shouldn’t have crossed.
When you finally make it back home, you guide Sunshine into the stables and remove the saddle and everything, allowing her to relax. Though you notice Danny’s horse was not there, meaning he was still gone.
The rest of your day is spent alone, you make your own lunch, though leaving some left overs for Danny, whenever he returns, if he does.
Dinner was the same. A silent house, the only sound being the wind, making the wooden boards creak. Before you know it, the sun has set, and Danny has yet to return, or at least make his way into the house, as far as you know. Which also means the cattle are stuck out there for the night.
Retiring to your room for the night, you take out the book you have been reading and curl up under your covers. Though it’s not long before you hear the front door open and close. You knew it was Danny, but you didn’t really want to face him at the moment.
Unfortunately, he decided it was time to face what happened, because a few minutes later, there’s a knock on your door. Your heart beats out of your chest as you carefully bookmark and close your book, and stand to answer the door.
“Listen, Danny, I am so sorry for what happened earlier, please don’t let that get in the way of-” you are cut off by Danny’s soft lips crashing into yours. He practically knocks the wind out of you, making you gasp as he takes a hold of your face to keep you close.
You reciprocate the kiss with just as much fervor, holding onto his forearms to steady yourself.
“Mhm, Danny?” You mumble against his lips, breaking the kiss for a moment.
“Shh, I’m so sorry for how I reacted,” he coos, his voice low and sorrowful. “I was…I was terrified.”
“Why?” He sighs softly and takes a seat on your bed. You close your door and then sit as close as you can next to him, your legs pressed against one another’s.
“I was scared that…kissing you back could potentially ruin all of this.
“I’m sorry for kissing you,” you immediately reply. Danny can’t help the laugh that escapes him.
“Why are you sorry? I wanted to kiss you too, darlin’, but…I was scared about your father finding out.”
“He’s not gonna shoot ya for kissing me, you know.” Danny shakes his head and grabs your hand.
“That’s not it. I was worried about him kicking me out, firing me, or you know, not allowing me to be a driver for him anymore.”
“He’s desperate for help, he’s not gonna kick you out anytime soon, let alone for kissin’ me,” you let him know. “And besides, I’m sure he would love you taking me out, or just bein’ with me. He talks so highly of you and tells me what a wonderful man you are, I don’t think he’d mind, knowing his daughter is in good hands.”
Danny looks over at you with a fond smile on his lips. His eyes quickly avert to your lips, and he leans in ever so slowly.
You take this as a sign that he wants to kiss you again, so you lean in as well, meeting him halfway. Though this time, the kiss is filled with much more hunger, more lust than the previous.
Turning your bodies so you can face each other better, Danny grabs your neck to keep you close to him, his fingers gently massaging the muscles in the area.
You softly moan into his mouth before he stands and breaks the kiss.
“I don’t…I don’t wanna do this tonight,” he mumbles awkwardly. Embarrassment fills your body and you shrink back onto your bed, your face on fire at this point.
“Oh, I’m so sorry, but I wasn’t wanting that tonight either,” you try and reconcile, not wanting to ruin this moment. “It’s…it’s just that I’ve thought about kissing you ever since we first met, and I guess I got a little carried away.”
Danny chuckles lightly and sits back down next to you, taking a hold of your hand.
“I’ve thought about it too, sweetheart. You are the most gorgeous girl I have ever seen,” he quietly flirts, a certain gleam in his eyes.
“Would you…um, would you want to stay with me tonight?” You ask him, though you avoid eye contact with him, your eyes instead trained on your entwined hands. However, his free hand lifts up to your face and tilts your chin up so he could see you.
“I would love that. Let me shower first because I just got home, and I’ll be back as soon as I can. Don’t fall asleep on me.” He winks at you and kisses your cheek, then stands to walk out of your room.
You take this time to finish reading the chapter you were on, and before you know it, Danny returns to your room, dressed in a pair of long pajama pants and no shirt. A small grin pulls at your lips, and you try to hide it from Danny, but it’s no use.
“Like what you see, huh?” He teases, eliciting a giggle from you.
His hair was still slightly wet, not to the point where it was dripping, but you could see his curls already forming and framing his face. He lays beside you after you set your book down, though you keep your bedside light on for the time being.
“Have I told you how pretty I think your nose is?” You tell him, reaching up to drag your finger down the bridge of his nose. He chuckles and watches you focus on his features.
“You haven’t, but thank you, darlin’. And your little nose is just as cute.” He taps your nose gently, making you scrunch it up in response.
You snuggle up into his side and his hand falls onto your back. Gently and almost like he was asking for permission, his hand slides under your nightshirt to feel your skin. When you don’t push him away or question it, he figures that he is okay to continue, so his touch gets a little more heavy, but in a relaxing way.
His touch was enough to put you to sleep, and the way his calloused fingers felt so rough yet so tender against you, it was a feeling you would never grow tired of.
“So, what do we tell your dad if he finds out?” Danny wonders after a few minutes of comfortable silence. You hum and shake your head, eyes fluttering shut as you start to lose consciousness. Your hand mindlessly traces along his bare chest, taking in the soft, warm skin beneath your fingertips, drawing shapes and patterns onto the area.
Gazing up, you find him staring down at you, adoration filling his eyes. He grabs your hand and brings it up to his lips, pressing light kisses to your fingertips and knuckles.
“Let’s cross that bridge when it comes,” you say. He nods and snuggles you closer to him, laying down with you and pulling you into his arms as you finally drift off to sleep.
The next morning, you wake up, your face pressed against Danny’s chest, and his arms tightly around you. Smiling to yourself, you could tell Danny was still asleep by the way his shallow and even breaths fanned out against your hair.
You didn’t want to move from your position, but seeing the clock on the wall, you knew it was time for him to get up and herd the cattle out. So, you kiss his neck, hoping to wake him up. Sure enough, it works and he groans, stirring at the feeling.
“Well that’s a way to wake up,” he jokes. You laugh and sit up, looking down at his sleepy figure.
“You should get up and go do what you’re here for.”
“Waking up to and kissing the pretty daughter of the farmer I work for?” He jokes, leaning down to quickly peck your lips. Smacking his chest, he laughs and sits up, falling away from his body, which you miss instantly.
“Come out with me again?” He asks, caressing your cheek with his hand. You fall into his touch, shutting your eyes for a moment to relish in the feel of his hand before nodding in agreement.
After making breakfast together, you sit and enjoy some coffee before heading out to the stables to do the same as yesterday.
You follow him out on horseback, keeping your distance as he lets the cattle into the open field. He finishes and heads back inside to rest for a little while you start on lunch.
“Wanna head out to the spot we went to the other day?” Danny wonders, coming up behind you with his hands on your hips. Chuckling, you nod and quickly made the lunch to go, so you could enjoy it out there.
Danny has different a different idea to get out there. Instead of taking your own horse, he has you ride with him, in front of him of course, so he could hold you against his chest. The entire ride down the trail is spent with him singing some tune in your ear and running his thumbs along your forearms.
Reaching the tree, he hops off then helps you down. And for the rest of the afternoon, after you enjoy your lunch, you lay adjacent to him with your head in his lap, his hands playing with your hair as you talk about your lives, getting to know one another for the first time.
Kisses are shared as well as stories that you’ve never told anyone else. You have no clue why you feel so comfortable around Danny now, but his presence makes you feel safe. He tells you all about growing up on a farm, and you are able to bond over similar events you have dealt with.
You head back a little bit before dinner, which Danny offers to make after he herds the cattle into the barn for the night.
“Come with me,” Danny stands after finishing dinner, holding his hand out for you to take. Cautiously, you place your hand in his and he brings you out of the house, pausing and telling you to stay on the porch.
He quickly runs to the stables and retrieves his horse, riding over to you once he has her. Like earlier, he helps you up onto the saddle and gets on himself after. He kicks his heels and the horse takes off through the gates where the cattle grazes and up to the top of the hill.
It’s a place you’ve spent many days, the view absolutely incredible, the wide open space of the west, rolling plains and deserts for miles upon miles. However tonight, the sunset was unbelievable.
The clouds made the sky very dimensional, and the colors were indescribable. Oranges mixed with pinks and reds, and part of the sky that was already turning blue was thrown in as well, some of it appearing purple.
“Wow,” you breathe out. You’ve seen sunsets on this hill many times, but this one was out of this world. Danny glances over at you and smiles, admiring the way the light bathes you in such a way.
“I’ve never seen anything more beautiful,” he says. You nod, still staring at the scene in front of you.
“It’s heavenly,” you reply. Danny doesn’t say anything else, catching your attention. You quickly avert your gaze to him and that’s when you realize that he is staring at you.
“It is,” he whispers. Your cheeks heat up as Danny’s hands grab your hips and he faces you fully. You reach up and tilt his hat away from his face so that the dimming sunlight catches his features as well. A smile stretches across your lips when you take in his astonishing brown eyes.
“Were-were you talking about the sunset?” You ask. Danny chuckles and leans down, his nose rubbing your cheek in such a tender way, it makes your heart flutter. He trails a line to your ear, where he presses a light kiss to the shell of it, before whispering into it.
“It is a sight, but I wasn’t talking about that,” he whispers, making his way back to your face. His eyes remain closed and he moves to kiss you, as sweetly as ever.
Your hands tangle in his curls that weren’t covered by his hat, a soft moan bubbling in your throat. Kissing Danny was addicting, and you hoped that he would stay with you for at least the near future; you couldn’t get enough of him.
Neither of you were expecting your father to be back around this time, but he arrived onto the property and got out of the towncar carefully. He takes a quick glance at the sunset, but something catches his eye. He sees the silhouettes of the two of you, kissing, completely caught up in your own world.
He tries not to watch, out of respect for your privacy, but a sense of pride and love washes over him. Danny proved himself to be a good man, and you had struggled to find that all your life. He can’t help the grin that tugs at his lips, knowing that you’re in good hands.
Once the sun has set, you and Danny spend just a little bit longer on the hill together before deciding to ride back, when it finally started to get chilly.
As soon as you step foot in the house, you see your dad sitting at the kitchen table, sipping on a glass of iced tea, waiting for your return. His presence makes you and Danny freeze. Danny awkwardly removes his hat, almost as if he feels like he doesn’t deserve to wear it anymore.
“Where’ve you two been?” He asks, crossing his arms. Though his expression holds a knowing look. Gulping, your eyes drop down to the floor. “Enjoying the sunset?”
“Dad, it’s-”
“Sir, it was me. She ain’t in the wrong, I fell for her and I know I shouldn’t ‘ave, but-”
“Young man, I was gonna say I give y’all my blessing,” your father cuts him off. Your head shoots up, your eyes wide in shock.
“What?” Your dad finally breaks his hard exterior and smiles widely. He gets up and makes his way over to the two of you.
“Danny, you’re a good kid. I hav’nt seen a man like you for quite some time. I know you’re good for my daughter. I was wonderin’ when it would happen anyways!” He teases, hugging you tightly before moving to shake Danny’s hand.
Danny was still so taken aback that he really didn’t register what happened until your dad was out of the room and walking towards the back porch, where he has been going to clear his mind most nights recently.
“Hey, you okay?” You pat Danny’s chest. He lets out the breath that he had been holding, which turns into laughter.
“I guess that bridge was easy to cross,” he says. You laugh with him and step closer to him, curling into his side.
“See, I told you you had nothing to worry about.”
Danny’s arms wrap around your body as his head nods against yours.
“You’re always right, aren’t you?” He smirks, leaning down to kiss you. You happily hum against his lips, eyes fluttering closed as you melt into his touch.
“Mhm. I am. And I think I’m going to be right about you staying with me again tonight?” Danny raises his eyebrow and tightens his grip on your waist, his fingers digging into your hips.
“Oh you are. But it ain’t gonna be innocent.”

-----------------------------------------------------
At a pace similar to the one they had taken to get to the bar, they rushed towards the outskirts of the woods. Their trek was silent for the most part, except for a brief update from Sam that their dad was on his way to the mayor to try and sort things out. Rae should have enjoyed the silence on their journey over, because once they actually stepped foot into the woods, Jake and Josh were almost immediately at each other’s throats.
“We need to go this way,” Jake pointed to the east, where the trees looked especially sinister and dark. Rae stared in that direction and felt her stomach do a somersault in retaliation.
“Absolutely not,” Josh shook his head. “The woods go deeper to the west, we have a better shot at finding something in that direction.”
Rae turned her head in the opposite direction and felt even more dread wash over her. The west woods didn’t look any more inviting than what was in the east. She considered turning back to book it to her house, but after a deep breath to center herself, she tried to channel whatever bravery she had.
“You’re wrong,” Jake stopped in his tracks, glaring up ahead at Josh. That was enough to get Josh to whirl back around and grimace at Jake in frustration.
“I’m definitely not,” Josh countered. “Maybe get off your high horse for once.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Jake spat back.
Josh let out a cold laugh. “A little self-awareness would do you some good.”
“That’s rich coming from you.”
Before Rae could react, Jake and Josh’s hands were curled back up in their fighting positions. It was a relief that Sam stepped in between them this time around, before things got especially messy.
“I found Danny’s backpack in the west,” Sam’s voice was firm enough to break them apart. Josh reacted to that news with a celebratory whoop, followed by a pretty juicy raspberry directed towards Jake. Jake looked like he desperately wanted to dispute his younger brother, but instead gave in and let his shoulders slump in defeat. It wasn’t a battle worth fighting. That still didn’t stop him from shoving Josh to get to the front of the pack so he could lead them deeper into the woods. Josh gave Jake a firm push back, and Jake kicked his foot back, sending it into Josh’s shin. Josh keeled over with a yelp of pain and bared his fangs at Jake, who in turn cackled. This tipped Josh over the edge, since he lept forward and clung onto Jake’s back, tugging him to the ground.
“Stop it!” Rae called out in desperation as she tried to push the two tussling boys apart. The effort was entirely futile: no matter how much she tried, they found a way to return back to clawing and throwing punches at each other. It reached the point where it was becoming too much for Rae to handle, and they weren’t fighting to kill, it seemed more like they were both trying to get something out of their systems. Rae didn’t understand why they had to do that, but she decided to let them get it out, so she fell back in line with Sam.
“Have they always been like this?” she asked. It was still unclear to her why they seemed to hate each other so much. How much of a difference was there really between vampires and werewolves?
“You’re not gonna believe this, but they actually used to be best friends,” Sam said under his breath, so his brother and Josh wouldn’t hear him.
“No way,” Rae gaped back at Sam. She looked beyond him to Jake and Josh, who had started to roll around in the dirt, swiping at each other like feral animals. Sam followed her gaze and shook his head at the sight. It was obvious he was just as fed up as her with their feud.
“They were literally inseparable when they first met in elementary school,” Sam explained. He started to move his hand towards Rae like he did before to show her another memory, but Rae slapped it away.
“Sorry,” she was fast to apologize while Sam cradled his hand. “I didn’t like that the last time you did it. It was freaky.”
“Most people say that,” Sam sighed. “I guess it is a bit weird.”
“It’s…unique,” Rae tried to assure him. Sam snorted, and Rae quickly steered the conversation back towards Jake and Josh. “So they were best friends?”
“I mean, I was super little back then, but I remember when Josh first moved to Frankenmuth, they immediately gravitated towards each other. It was like you couldn’t keep them apart. Well, until my dad found out.”
“You son of a bitch!” Jake cursed beyond them as Josh grabbed a handful of his long hair and started to tug on it.
“Don’t call my mom a bitch!” Josh hollered back, and gave a hefty yank on Jake’s hair.
“He was furious,” Sam continued on, as if nothing was happening in front of them. “I’d never seen him like that before. It was like smoke was pouring out from his ears. He brought Jake and I together and told us we had to stay away from the vampires. They took our mom.”
“Shit,” Rae whispered.
“Jake confronted Josh about it and their argument blew up into this big thing that neither of them have ever gotten over.”
“OW!” Josh screamed. “HE BIT ME!”
That, apparently, was Sam’s breaking point.
“JAKE!” he shouted, powering to Jake’s side. “You know we’re not supposed to bite people! It’s in our code of conduct!”
“Code of conduct my ass,” Jake barked back. Fortunately, though, Sam’s scolding was enough to break the two apart. They moved away from each other, Josh cradling his wounded arm, while Jake clawed at his tongue to get rid of Josh’s germs.
“You two are ridiculous,” Sam shook his head, looking more dejected than upset.
Josh’s phone buzzed, and he gave it a quick glance.
“Our parents are talking to the mayor now.”
“We need to remember what’s important here,” Rae reminded them all. “Set aside your differences, suck it up, and let’s work together to find Sam’s friend.”
“Danny,” Sam quietly interjected.
“Right, Danny,” Rae gave Sam a nod with a sympathetic smile.
“Nice motivational speech, Rae,” Jake said as he patted her on the back. It was hard to tell if he was joking around or being condescending. He took the lead and they made their way deeper into the trees.
They scoured around in silence for what felt like hours, Sam and Jake sniffing the perimeter while Josh and Rae scanned up in the trees for anything. The woods felt barren, which was almost more unnerving to Rae. It was like every creature around them was hiding from something they didn’t know about. Rae wanted to get a better sense of what they might be up against, so she tapped Josh on the shoulder.
“Hm?” he asked with a jump. Rae had a feeling he had been caught up thinking about something and consequently forgot that he had company. “What’s up?” He raised an eyebrow after collecting himself.
“I’m sorry, this is a stupid question -” Rae started, but Josh cut her off.
“Nope, no such thing as a stupid question.”
“Okay, well, are there any other, uh, creatures that exist alongside vampires and werewolves?”
“Actually, Bigfoot is real.”
“Are you serious?” Rae paled. If that was what was taking people in the woods, Rae was ready to throw in the towel. She had done enough to help.
“No,” Josh let out an infectious laugh. “Sorry, I had to pull your leg a little bit.” Rae gave him a playful shove which brought along more giggles. From across the clearing, Jake took a pause from his tracking to see what the commotion was about, saw Josh and Rae, and shook his head, redirecting his attention back to his search. “Aside from Bigfoot, just about everything you grew up hearing about in fairytales and shit is out there.”
“Ghosts?”
“Yup.”
“Fairies?”
“Absolutely. They’re kinda assholes.”
“Leprechauns?”
“Those fuckers can kick hard.”
“Do you have any floating theories about what’s taking people out here?”
“I don’t know if you want the answer to that question.”
“Trust me, I do.”
Josh gave Rae an amused look and shook his head, trying to think of the best way to respond to her question. He leaned up against an exceptionally large balsam fir and crossed his arms over his chest.
“I’m sure it’s something that’s been hiding for decades, if not centuries. For as young as he is, Sam has a wealth of knowledge. If he doesn’t know what the hell he’s smelling on that bag, it’s gotta be something beyond our comprehension. I’ve only ever heard stories about wendigos, but that’s what I’m going with.”
“Great,” was all Rae could think to say. She had heard tales about wendigos when she was younger, and always got spooked by the thought of greedy humans transforming into a monster so bloodthirsty and completely removed from any ounce of humanity.
“They have a shield of ice around their hearts, so they’re especially hard to kill,” Josh continued to explain. “You have to weaken them before you can get the job fully done.”
“Do you think that’s in our wheelhouse?”
“I’d like to think we’d have some luck on our side that could help us out.”
“You don’t sound optimistic.”
“I’m trying to avoid thinking about it too much.”
“That’s understandable.”
“Have you guys found anything?” Jake asked, rejoining their side. He was caked in sweat and had his brows furrowed.
“Literally nothing,” Josh reported back in a monotone voice.
“I bet we went the wrong way,” Jake grumbled to himself.
Josh’s phone buzzed, saving them from another heated argument, and he checked his notification.
“It’s not going well with the mayor,” he reported.
“Fuckin asshole,” Jake threw up his hands. He stomped away and dropped himself on a wide stump sitting in a patch of grass and wildflowers under the canopy tall firs nearby. In the distance, Sam was still searching around in desperation, hoping to find even a crumb of evidence about Danny’s whereabouts. To Rae’s surprise, Josh made his way out to Sam and started to talk with him about something that was out of earshot. She planned to move closer to figure out what was going on, but Jake spoke from his stump.
“I feel like there’s no way this is going to end well,” he mumbled just loud enough for Rae to hear. She let out a small sigh and took a seat beside him on the stump, their bodies close together.
“That’s the spirit, bud,” she told him. She wasn’t the best at cheering people up - Morgan was always giving her a hard time that she was too sarcastic to be any comfort. To her relief, her comment did get a small smile out of Jake, and he had a twinkle in his eyes as they looked at each other.
“I’m sorry for bringing you into all of this shit.”
“I’m sorry for all the shit you’ve been through. You’ve been dealt one hell of a hand in this lifetime.”
“No kidding,” Jake blew out some air. “Same for you though.”
“You suck it up and power through,” Rae shrugged. That was her mantra, and it had worked pretty well for her so far.
“Well, Josh is the one who sucks things up,” Jake mumbled. He blushed as he made eye contact with Rae and gave a goofy grin. “Vampire joke, sorry.”
Rae scrunched up her face, which made Jake’s grin widen.
“That’s an awful joke.”
“I’ll be here all week,” Jake bumped shoulders with her. They let silence sit between them for a while, watching as Josh and Sam engaged in some kind of energetic conversation in the distance. The air felt like it hung heavy in their air, as if Rae could cut through it with a knife. She wiped some perspiration from her brow and wished for a gust of wind to bring them some relief, though she knew it would never come.
She watched Jake out of the corner of her eye. His brows were scrunched as he stared down at his feet in the dirt, not bothering to blink once. Rae wondered what he was thinking about, and then was haunted by the vision Sam had shared with her earlier. Jake had an innocent man’s blood on his hands. Granted, he hadn’t been the one to directly do it, but she knew that he carried the burden of knowing his mistake had cost someone their life. She wondered what it was like to go home every day to a man who had orchestrated that murder. Did Jake think his dad had done the right thing? Or did it keep him up at night? Did he have to tell himself lies to make him feel better?
She caught a glimpse of him again and grew concerned when she saw that a couple of tears were sprouting from the corners of his eyes. She purposefully turned her head away from him to give him space to wipe his eyes clear, but then slowly offered out her hand for him to take. She wasn’t looking at him, but she had a feeling there was a look of shock sprawled across his face. Eventually he gently took her hand and gave it a light squeeze. So maybe Rae could comfort people if she really cared.
She looked around, still avoiding eye contact with Jake, and frowned at something that was laying just beyond a tree a few yards away, partially shielded by an impressive amount of dried pine needles.
“Your hand is soft,” Jake awkwardly commented, sounding infinitely more calm than when Rae had first joined him.
“Jake,” Rae whispered back, her eyes still glued on the thing. “I think I found something.”
Their eyes finally met, both wide. Rae released her hand from Jake’s grip and used it to point at the pine needle pile. Jake took in a few deep sniffs, which was something Rae was still getting used to, and jumped to his feet.
“Danny,” his voice warbled with emotion. Rae ran behind him as he sprinted towards the tree that seemed to extend into oblivion in the sky. How she was able to see the small square of fabric tucked underneath the pine needles, Rae had no clue, but Jake threw himself into the pile and began to dig, throwing foliage behind him in huge clouds of dirt. Once the dust settled, they stared in awe.
It was a University of Michigan hoodie that had at one point been light gray, but now was dirtied brown from the ground. Jake studied the jacket first in disbelief, and then sadness.
“I wonder how far away his backpack was from here?” Rae asked as she took in the jacket. It looked in rough shape, like Danny had been dragged and thrown around in it. There were tears in the sleeves, and the hood was entirely missing. Jake tucked his hand carefully into the front pockets and shook his head.
“Nothing in there,” he reported. With a sigh he stood back up from his squat, carrying Danny’s jacket up with him and holding it out so he could look at its front. Rae saw the back of the jacket and let out a sharp gasp. “What is it?” Jake looked around in a panic.
“The back of the jacket,” was all Rae could get out. Jake turned the jacket around and his face immediately dropped.
Written in blood on the back of the jacket were five words:
GET ME OUT OF HERE
