FTH 2024 Creator Signups are OPEN!
The moment you've been waiting for has arrived! But before you rush straight to the signup form, note that a few things are different from last year:
You will not be able to edit your signup immediately, but you will be able to edit it. We're changing some things on the back end so that we can get posts up faster, but that means that when you get your email confirming your signup it won't have an edit link. Once we've processed your signup (which may take several days), we will send you a link to make edits. Please do NOT fill the signup form out again in order to edit a previous entry! Wait to hear from us.
Typesetting is now an option under Fan Labor. Remember that we only allow digital goods in the main auction - we'll be opening signups soon for the Craft Bazaar if you want to offer bookbinding or other physical crafts.
All Marvel-related fandoms are now under the Marvel top-level fandom (instead of MCU) and all DC-related are under DC. This includes comics. This allows us to stop worrying about, for example, whether Deadpool or Venom is MCU or what "DC Extended Universe" does and doesn't include.
Six of Crows and Shadow and Bone are both covered by the new Grishaverse fandom tag, House of the Dragon is part of ASOIAF/GOT, and 9-1-1 Lone Star is grouped with 9-1-1.
You can view this year's full list of fandoms here - remember that if the fandom you want isn't listed, there is a write-in option. However, check all possible names for your fandom before resorting to write-in! If your fandom is a spinoff, choose the fandom it's related to and specify in your auction notes which parts of canon/the universe you're willing to create for. Every fandom with subfandoms also has an "Any" option if you're willing to create for anything within the top-level fandom and an "Other" option to write in subfandoms.
Even if you've signed up before, please re-read the FAQ to re-familiarize yourself with our policies. If you're new to FTH, check out these tips for first-time creators (and also read the FAQ). It might also help to peruse last year's listings to get an idea for what kind of information people include and how we use the information you give us to form our tagging system.
Remember that you can offer up to three auctions, but you will need to fill out a separate signup for each of those. Each auction can only be for one type of fanwork, but can be offered in up to 3 fandoms (and unlimited subfandoms if you choose a fandom with subfandoms) or "Any fandom." Your bidder will get to choose from any of the fandoms in the listing, so please don't offer something you don't want to create just to get more eyes on your auction.
Signups will be open for two weeks, until February 19th, so there's no rush! Take your time and make sure you understand how it all works and what you're committing to. If you have any questions not covered here or in our FAQ, please email us at fandomtrumpshate @ gmail.com!
Ok, did you read all that? You know what's different from last year? You've refreshed your knowledge of our FAQ?
In that case, sign up for FTH 2024 here!

We’re back with our next round of prompts Third Army! This week (January 21st to January 27th) we want to talk all about “journeys”. Not just the journey to the Ice Court or the journey through the Fold, but our own journey as the Third Army! The billboards go up in LA and London on the 22nd, and that’s just one of the major milestones we have reached as a fandom.
Let’s take a moment to talk about the road so far, and celebrate all the journeys the Grishaverse offers - real and fantasy. To aid with that, we are going to give out prompts and boost content about our Grishaverse. Come join us, send us your fanfics, post your art, and make sure to use hashtag #Third Army so we can see each post!
Writing prompt: The Six of Crows duology ended, but we know that’s not the end of the Crows’ stories. Tell us the next adventures you imagine the Crows would go on!
Writing prompt: Let’s tell a sea-shanty inspired story, sailing off to the great unknown. Come up with a Pirate x Mermaid AU with your favorite ship!
Writing prompt: Write an essay on a niche Grishaverse topic that you are obsessed with but no one else seems to talk about.
Art prompt: Draw yourself as a Grisha on a journey to (or even through) the Fold!
Art Prompt: Though we got to see the Komedie Brute costumes onscreen in season two of Shadow and Bone, we didn’t get to quite see the Crows in their designated costumes. Draw the Crows, or even Alina and her companions, in your idea of the Komedie Brute costumes!
Photoshop challenge: There have been many a journey taken over the course of human history, from the Greek Odyssey to Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. There’s even more modern journeys like road trips and sightseeing. Photoshop the Grishaverse characters on one of these journeys, or any other journey you can think of!
Photoshop challenge: The Ice Court heist was dangerous and brilliant - but what other heists do you think the Crows could pull off? Photoshop them into other popular heists!
Mixed Media challenge: Nikolai becomes king at the end of season two of Shadow and Bone, but we all know that’s not where his story (or Zoya’s) ends. Let’s try to tell more of his story through whatever media you like (writing, video, photoshop, art).
Video edit prompt: Let’s compile all that we have done so far, and make a tribute to all the work we have been doing together during this campaign to renew the show and greenlight the spinoff.
Question/Answer prompts: Though it feels like years have passed, it’s only been a few months since Shadow and Bone was officially canceled and the Six of Crows spinoff scrapped. In that time we have accomplished so much! What was the moment for you where you realized just how far we have reached? The billboard going up maybe, or how about reaching 195k on the petition? Or maybe it was early on, when we all scrambled together to get the campaign rolling?
Every week I want to ask people to share happy/hopeful stories about Grishaverse and the campaign. Let’s talk about the friends we’ve made, the kindness in the fandom, and any moments of hope we can share to keep our spirits strong!

Okay but isn’t it like Warrior Nun or something that was canceled by netflix but then due to fan support was eventually brought back or renewed somehow?
I'm not sure, but there have been a lot of "uncancellations," because whether a show is popular has literally nothing to do with whether a streamer, especially Netflix, renews it. SAB was top of the most-watched list for months, had a vocal and dedicated fanbase calling for its renewal, and it was clear that people were interested both in it and in the potential Six of Crows spinoff. But Netflix gonna Netflix, and I don't for one moment believe that "the impact of the strike" had anything to do with it. That reeks of studio propaganda, frankly, to blame the writers/actors for going on strike at all and being the Big Meanies who are the reason (not Netflix's well-established pattern of doing exactly this) they won't get any more of their favorite show. After all, they're only giving up a TINY extra portion of their revenues, there's no actual budgetary reason they couldn't do it, and if it was just because it was popular (which has never saved non-Witcher Netflix shows in the past), they could have renewed it. Instead, this plays very much as a petty "fine, you forced us to do the deal with the writers/actors, but we can still axe boatloads of your favorite shows all at once to punish you, neener neener" power move.
As I said in my tags last night: they didn't HAVE to wait until after the strike to cancel it (and a few others). I realize that shouting at Netflix for dickish cancellation practices is like shouting at the sky for being blue or Republicans for being idiots, but still. SAB was always long odds to get a season 3 just because three seasons means Netflix has to start -- gasp! -- paying people for residuals and streaming, or at least that was the case under the old contract. So it had reached the dreaded Two Season Chopping Block, but if Netflix wanted to cancel it, as they were clearly planning to do, they could have just, you know. Done that. Instead, waiting this long and explicitly blaming "the impact of the strike" sounds, to me, like a great big bucket of passive-aggressive bullshit, and we know they're petty enough to do these kinds of things. So yeah.
Anyway, this means I am in fact going to do the Lost in Wonderland sequel fic sooner or later (Empire of Bones still has first dibs on my muse, I know people are waiting for an Unknown and Static Strange update as well, etc etc). It won't be a full retelling/treatment of s3, but the fact that I can now use other characters in addition to Fivan means that there will be a somewhat broader focus with more plot threads, and it will incorporate elements of what I would have liked to see in SAB s3. I.e. Mad Queen Alina, Crows Ice Court Rescuing Fivan Shenanigans, Mei Looking For Her Dads, Very Polite Shadow Monster David, and other fun things. So hey. Silver-ish lining, or something. Still, fuck you Netflix. Fuck you very much.

I'm sorry but the way Jesper waited to start crying until Inej left??? He's always the "comic relief", always making jokes (even during hard times). It's so beautiful- and sad- how Jesper knew that Inej would turn back. She would stay for her family if she saw him crying or breaking down. That hit home so hard. I absolutely love the friendship between Inej and Jesper and the show doesn't do a good job of showing it, or any of the other crow friendships either. I mean, Six of Crows is popular for many reasons, but one of the major ones is the found family trope.
And Kit Young and Amita Suman! ❤️ Just a moment of appreciation for them. The portrayal of their characters is so raw and real to their book selves, like I swear, I nearly cried during that deleted scene. Absolutely beautiful, but please give us the spinoff 🥺. We need more moments like this, times that show us how interconnected the Crows are as a family.

Fic Questions
I’m pretending I got tagged by @doggernaut. Thanks for the open call!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
132, babey.
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
338,778 words.
3. How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
According to FFN (I’ve been there a heck of a lot longer than I’ve been on AO3), I’ve written for 23 fandoms: Artemis Fowl, Hoot, Harry Potter, Maximum Ride, the Odyssey, Protector of the Small Quartet, Song of the Lioness, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Sherlock, Discworld, Downton Abbey, Legally Blonde, Pride and Prejudice, Carry On, Paper Towns, Turtles All the Way Down, Yuri!!! on Ice, Maleficent, Six of Crows, Trials of Apollo series, Good Omens, Check, Please!, and Chronicles of Narnia.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Love in the Time of Influenza (Carry On)
Face the Future with You (Check Please)
Nightmares (Carry On)
The Aftermath of Angelic Assumptions (Good Omens)
Christmas Planning (Carry On)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes, almost always. Less so if it’s just a smiley face or a single word, but almost always if it’s longer than that.
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
I don’t think I’ve ever written an ending with zero hope, but I have a few ones on the grim side. It’s probably a tie between “A Few Things, Maybe Several Things,” a genderbent Check Please fic where Jacqueline Zimmermann is recovering from an eating disorder and fighting with her parents, and “You’ve Saved Me from Another World,” a Narnia fic about Susan not returning to Narnia.
7. Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the wildest one you’ve written?
So, my most popular fic ever was a crossover of Harry Potter and Sherlock in which Remus Lupin and John Watson were the same person. It’s called “The Jumper Chronicles” and it’s only on FFN. (Fair warnings: I wrote it in high school and then abandoned it, so it’s both awful and unfinished.) Other than that, I’ve got a Check Please/Lizzie Bennet Diaries crossover called “A Little Help” where Bitty and Lizzie meet at VidCon and become close friends, a Check Please/Carry On crossover called “Checking You Out” where Holster and Baz work on an econ project together and Holster encourages Baz to ask Simon out, and a Check Please/Harry Potter crossover called “You Won’t Grow Out of It; You Will Find Clothes That Fit” where Ginny and Lardo are roommates and both realize they’re nonbinary.
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
I once received 17 consecutive hate comments from the same person on one of my multi-chapters over the course of two days. It was awful. Like, I got pretty used to one-off flames and concrit when I was on FFN, and I rolled with that pretty well, but I have no idea why someone would read 17 chapters of a fic they hate and then tell the author how much they hate it 17 times.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Not really. I’ve written a bit of grinding once or twice, but never actual sex.
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not to my knowledge. I can name at least three spinoffs of my fics, though. That’s always gratifying.
11. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I don’t think so.
12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Not officially, but I’ve had friends help me figure out what happens next in my fics and/or give me ideas and prompts, so there are definitely fics I couldn’t have written entirely independently.
13. What’s your all-time favorite ship?
All-time? Don’t put that kind of pressure on me! I feel like the ship I’m least likely to ever stop loving is Elizabeth Bennet/Darcy, but I’ve never been as obsessed with them as I’ve gotten with some of my other ships.
14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
I feel like there’s a decent chance I’ll finish the WIPs I’m invested in, or I’ll stop being invested in the ones I don’t finish. Although I do currently have a Nurseydex fic that might never see the light of day . . .
15. What are your writing strengths?
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: perseverance. I’ve averaged a fic every two weeks for the past two years, and I also write original stuff. I don’t know that I’m particularly stellar at any individual aspect of writing, though I’m at least okay at several things. I really do think that my main strength is just that I keep writing.
16. What are your writing weaknesses?
Too few sensory details, too many logistical details, and no consistent ability to predict human behavior. Pretty sure all of this is my autism coming through.
17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I try to avoid it, especially when I don’t speak the relevant languages. I used to do it and it didn’t work out well. I will say that I’ve tried writing entire fics in both Swedish and Spanish before. They were bad, partly because that was like eight years ago and partly because I’m not 100% fluent in either of those languages, but like. I have given it a shot. (I’d love to write more stuff about Louis being Swedish, one day, and that might involve some Swedish dialogue, but I’m pretty confident in my own translation abilities there.)
18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
So, I got an FFN account in 2011 and immediately posted stuff for Artemis Fowl, Hoot, Harry Potter, and Maximum Ride, but the first time I wrote fanfiction was back in fifth grade, when my teacher read us Time for Andrew by Mary Downing Hahn and I was so unsatisfied with the ending that I decided to write a sequel. I worked on the sequel for over a year and it wound up being probably about 30k (typed, 1.5 spacing, 12-point font, it was like 90 pages).
19. What’s your favorite fic you’ve ever written?
Probably my 2020 Fandom Trumps Hate fic, “Man Oh Man, You’re My Best Friend.” It was my first (only?) attempt at the fake dating trope and I had a blast writing it, and I feel like I ticked my own boxes when it comes to insecure characters receiving love.
I tag @weneedtotalkaboutfic @ivecarvedawoodenheart @shitty-check-please-aus @birlcholtz @cricketnationrise @khashanakalashtar and anyone else who wants to play! (I can feel myself forgetting people and I’m pre-emptively sorry!)

ELLA’S TOP THREE TUESDAY: BOOKS THAT SHOULD BE TURNED INTO A MOVIE/TV SERIES
I often can’t avoid the fear I have for the life of a book or a book series whenever some rich film corporation decides they can make good money off some pretty fantastic stories. I always do love when my favorite books get exposure, and sometimes, them being turned into movies or a TV series is part of that extra exposure. But sometimes, I can’t help but be a little clingy towards my favorites--afraid that whoever decides to put it on screen will screw it up. (*huge cough* Percy Jackson *huge cough*).
Though it’s not to say that I am completely opposed to the very thought of it. It’s always so exciting whenever I hear a book to movie/show adaptation, even for books I haven’t even read yet. And for today’s Top Three Tuesday, I have selected three series’s that I think would make an excellent on-screen story, perhaps even just as good or better than the book (although, let’s be real--almost nothing is better than the book). Let’s begin!
𝓣𝓸𝓹 𝓣𝓱𝓻𝓮𝓮  The School for Good and Evil by Soman Chainani
Tumblr media
First of all, I understand how this series might already have a movie deal--but it’s been long overdue now. I want the movie for this like, well, right now. Just reading this book has me playing the scenarios like a movie. Every single scene--whether action or something as plain as simple as a dialogue--is remarkably vivid and so amazingly written. It’s hard not to imagine it being anything but an amazing movie franchise.
There’s so much depth to the story for something that’s labeled as Middle Grade, and I can honestly say that this book is definitely along the lines of Harry Potter and Percy Jackson. It is that good that I’m surprised only few know of it. If you haven’t already, go read it, and come back here to tell me that I’m right--it should be turned into a movie. Because it’s all it deserves and so much more.
𝓣𝓸𝓹 𝓣𝔀𝓸 Grisha Verse by Leigh Bardugo
Tumblr media
You know what could top MCU, DC, heck, even Harry Potter? Personally, the Grisha Verse of Leigh Bardugo containing the first three books of the Grisha Verse, the Six of Crows duology, and then King of Scars (coming out next year) would do the trick just fine. Let me just say that Leigh has a talent for adding life to all of her characters. I do mean all--despite my reluctance still with Mal’s character--up from the main characters of her stories and down to even the most minor character. You can’t help but love almost all of her characters, admire the world that she created, and enjoy the way she produces this story with her exemplary writing style.
I mean, come on. Imagine Alina being such a badass Sun Summoner on the big screen. Imagine our favorite dregs jumping from one heist to another in a television series. Imagine Nikolai having his own iconic story for all to see in the theaters. There’s so many possibilities in this world that Leigh has created, so many opportunities for spinoffs, and everything else in between. I’m surprised she hasn’t been offered a movie/tv series deal. If you haven’t already dived into the Grisha Verse, then you’re missing out on some epic characters and an amazing world to boot. Stop what you’re doing right now and just pick this verse up. I vouch for you that you will not regret reading it.
𝓣𝓸𝓹 𝓞𝓷𝓮 The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer
Tumblr media
Many would assume that I would put the Grisha Verse on top one. But many fail to remember that if they haven’t followed me before, they wouldn’t know how much I raved about The Lunar Chronicles. I think this series was probably in a lot of my top somethings or book recommendations because I have no other way to better expose the series than to keep recommending it to friends and sharing my love for it. Let me just say that the last book of this series is one of the most cinematic books I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading next to The Last Ever After by Soman Chainani. You’ve got fairytale retellings + sci-fi + a revolution! What more could you possibly ask for?
Marissa has a way of writing the most remarkable characters, show us the most intricate details of a world, and give us the depth most readers crave for in a book. Not to mention all the ships in this! I mean, if you haven’t already read my Winter review, you should! Or rather, read the actual series. I can happily say that it’s the kind of book for just about anyone. I recommended the series to my Team Leader at work, and I’m happy to say that she is loving Cinder so far. I’m actually afraid of being a little annoying because I ask her weekly about her progress reading it, but she’s always glad to let me know how it’s doing if she wasn’t always so tired from work, haha! It’s honestly the most powerful combination of action, romance, sci-fi, all wrapped up in one series. The perfect cinematic series should it ever go on the big screen.

Hi! I was wondering if Six of Crows is worth a read! I tried reading the first few chapters but I wasn't sure if the rest of the book is gonna be like the beginning (e.g. pacing). What are the pros and cons on the book? And what's your rating for it (1 to 10)? Thank you so much and I've loved your blog for a long time!
thank you I was confused at first because there’s so much jargon and so much world thrust at you at once. It makes it seem slow and information heavy. I tried to ignore these feelings because I’ve heard SoC is kind of a spinoff, and I’ve never read any other of Bardugo’s books // I’m not familiar with the universe. If you feel this way as well, it will become clearer. I also initially wasn’t too intrigued by the characters- they seemed very stale and archetypal. I’ve read lots of books where “badass skills” replace personal substance, and I thought (incorrectly) that this might be one of those. That being said, I thought she was devoting a lot of time to setting up the world- not necessarily all its secrets, but the way it feels. I took the attention to detail as proof she knew what she was doing, and I continued. I’m glad I did! The pace picked up A LOT, backing off and diving in to the personal shit at the correct moments. The interactions between characters became very compelling too, and as I said, Bardugo really got the knack of ending a chapter at just the right place where you needed to know more but didn’t feel anything had been deliberately hidden.
Cons: some people complain that the world is too derivative of actual places- Ketterdam = Amsterdam, Fjerda = Germany- and that she made some mistakes with words she made up and used that were mostly supposed to be somewhat like the Dutch language. none of these things bothered me, but I’m from the US. Your mileage may vary. the only major con I PERSONALLY found was the prose itself, which struck me as generally plain and emotionless. for me, that put me at a little bit of an emotional distance from the characters until we started getting some backstory. i’m willing to give this a pass because while the prose didn’t impress me on a technical level, Bardugo’s storytelling did. At the very least, her writing didn’t get in the way of the story she was trying to tell.
Pros: the plot is very well-crafted, and I actually think the pacing was one of the very best things about it. there were many times I tried to find a stopping point, only to realise, yes, I would just have to stop at a climactic moment. that was about the entire second half of the book. bonus points for no forced romance. I also am inclined to see the characters as SUBVERSIONS of archetypes. take Kaz, for instance. he’s “Dirtyhands,” bastard of the barrel and criminal mastermind. usually, these characters basically get their rocks off on being an asshole in a way that’s supposed to be sexy rather than legitimately menacing. but kaz didn’t seem to do anything for show. our insights into kaz’ true character are tightly controlled but very effective, and i feel similarly about (most of) the other characters.i’m gonna give it a??? 7.5 / 10, though to be fair, i can count the books on one hand i’d put higher than an 8. if the writing itself gets a little emotionally closer to the characters in the sequel, i’d easily rate this higher. above 8 is obsessed with it territory for me, and i’m not quite there. i enjoyed it so much though that there’s no way i could say it wasn’t worth it.
unrelated- i luv the birthday massacre

MST3K: Joel Hodgson Reveals the Secrets of the Gizmoplex, Teases “the Next Manos”
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
A few years ago, Mystery Science Theater 3000 made its grand return. Through an incredibly successful Kickstarter, they raised enough money and showed proof of enough fan interest to get the show back with a new season. Netflix acted as the home to the eleventh season with fourteen episodes and much fun was had by all. The Return also led to a series of live tours that kept going until COVID kicked in and they also did a Dark Horse comic spinoff.
Unfortunately, Netflix wasn’t so enthusiastic in the aftermath. The twelfth season only contained six episodes, emphasizing the challenge of binge-watching them. Then Netflix unceremoniously dumped the show. Well, at least we have the fourth season of GLOW to look forward to.
…oh, you bastards.
But now the MST3K team have a brand-new Kickstarter project, “Let’s Make More MST3K & and Build the Gizmoplex!” Yes, Joel Hodgson and friends are going the Bender route (minus the blackjack and hookers) of making their own streaming service of sorts specifically for MST3K viewing and checking out the brand-new episodes. The good news is that the initial goals were met, but the true, final goal is still a ways to go. They have until Friday night, May 7 to hit $5.5 million. If they meet that, there will be twelve episodes instead of the definite six.
Also cool is that while previous incarnations of MST3K have been based on mad scientists torturing one group of subjects at a time, the upcoming thirteenth season will feature two separate groups! Jonah will return with Baron Vaughn as Tom Servo and Hampton Yount as Crow for some episodes, but other episodes will feature the the cast from MST3K Live with Emily Marsh as Emily Crenshaw along with Conor McGiffen as Tom Servo and Nate Begle as Crow.
And if they reach the final stretch goal, Joel Robinson will come back into the theater for another round or two! Neat!
Speaking of Joel, I had the pleasure of speaking with series creator Joel Hodgson about the Kickstarter and the new episodes. Here’s what he had to say.
Den of Geek: So to start with, we have a new Kickstarter out there, “Make More MST3K.” This time, rather than shopping it around, the funding is based around building Gizmoplex, a streaming service. Can you give us a basic idea of what the Gizmoplex is all about?
Joel: Well, the idea of the Gizmoplex is a premiere theater. The Mads have built a Cineplex on the moon, and they’re prepping the make it a tourist attraction and screening movies there. And on the practical level, the way you access it is you can watch it on a lot of your different devices and on smart TVs and stuff like that. And there’s also a few features, like you can watch it with friends and chat. If you happen to buy episodes or bought episodes through the last Kickstarter, you can watch those there, too, kind of like your own locker or library with your shows in it.
Very nice. So since you’d be calling the shots this time, would you still restrict the episode length, or would you keep it uniform?
I think most the time we found that the sweet spot is the whole show should be about 90 minutes. We tend to cut the movies so they fit that. We don’t show them in their entirety, because sometimes these movies are poorly made.
Ha! I’ve caught on to that, yes.
Yeah. Right?
So last season you guys did “Ah-tor”/”A-tor”…I don’t know how to pronounce it, Ator the Fighting Eagle.
A-tor, yeah. Everybody says it different. I say “A-tor,” but a lot of people say “Ah-tor.”
Which was a huge deal, because it’s the prequel to what I consider to be the first true classic episode of MST3K, Cave Dwellers. Are there any other series you’d like to revisit? Any chance we might finally get some more Master Ninja out there?
We’re always looking for that. The tough thing with me with Master Ninja is that it’s made for TV. And so, the aspect ratio is… It doesn’t really give you that immersive academy aperture vibe. So I tend to want to do movies that are more wide screen. 4:3 to me is just so tough because everybody has these nice big TVs now and phones, so it doesn’t quite look right there. But we are experimenting and looking into trying something where we might be able to use a 4:3 in and change the aspect ratio, so it looks right.
Yeah, because one of my favorite sub-genres of Mystery Science Theater movies, I’m just fascinated by it, is just, whenever just two episodes of a TV show or a pilot or something are stitched together and they try and say it’s a movie. I always think those are just the weirdest experiments.
It’s true. And they are really interesting, and they are really super disjointed. I agree. They do have a unique profile, I think.
We have a movie we just screened that we’re trying to get, that I have to say is… We watched it, Matt and Cheryl and I, the other day, and it left us all really, really depressed. And we had ended the day, saying that’s a no-go on that movie. And then I thought about it, and I realized that we should probably do it. It might have components of that same kind of – oh man, what would you call it? It’s not like despair. It’s kind of like…a malaise, kind of the same way that a Manos: The Hands of Fate has this kind of malaise feeling to it. It was really weird, but I do think in some ways it could out-Manos, Manos.
I think Manos works because you get this really weird feeling as you watch it. You can’t tell if the filmmaker is really talented and is giving you this feeling of…almost like the air has gotten sucked out of the movie, and you wonder if they know what they’re doing or if it’s just a happy accident, that the movie gives you this really weird kind of feeling…
Yeah. Just kind of like a dread that goes through it. There’s just a dread feeling as you’re watching it mixed with wanting to take a shower.
Yeah, yeah. It’s really funny. You can’t tell if the filmmaker did that deliberately, or if it’s an accident, because there were things that work with that movie, where it was like they shot it with a specific type of camera that only could shoot 35 seconds of film at a time and then they did all the sound later. And by the time we got it, the print was really bad.
This new movie has those same kind of feelings that you can’t put your finger on, but it’s amazing in its own right. I had never seen this movie before. I never even heard of it before. But when we first watched it, we just said, “we can’t do this movie.” Then I realized that it would be really great if we could do it.
I’m very much looking forward to that one. So are we ever going to see any of the live touring shows in any form? I know it defeats the point and the purpose, but with 2020 and the whole pandemic screwing everything up, maybe we could get a little taste?
We’re looking into it on a couple of different levels, and we would really like do that. It’s really different, and it’s very ambitious to shoot a live show. We’re up for it, and we’d like to try it.
So to answer your question, I believe we’re planning on…I think the touring cast is going out once COVID is wrapped. We’re already planning another tour. We’re interested in recording those new ones, if possible.
With the comeback, the villain henchmen, the Boneheads, are based on the bad guys from Infra-Man. Has there been any plans or interest in covering that movie for the show at all?
I do love that movie. It’s actually a really good point. I’m going to look into that. I do love Infra-Man, and it would be really fun to do that. I mean, it kind of changed my life, man. I saw Infra-Man when I was… It was probably in the early ’80s at an art house cinema, and it was pretty amazing. I thought it was pretty great. And the idea of an ironic viewing and all that, that was when it dawned on me.
In fact, I’ll tell you something. When I was working on the idea of Kinga, the way I did it was I took the Dragon Queen from Infra-Man and I put Lucille Ball’s head on her in Photoshop. So that’s kind of was the beginning of Kinga. And then I thought that Felicia Day was probably the closest thing we have to Lucille Ball right now.
No disagreement here. One thing I’ve noticed with the MST3K resurgence over the past few years is that it seems like when you left the show, you decided to, I guess, distance yourself from it for a time, which is understandable. Since you’ve come back home, you’re now seeing all these Mike era episodes that you’ve never seen before. I know the other night you saw Hobgoblins for the first time, which was a treat to watch. What’s the experience been like? And are there any moments or movies that really stand out to you?
It’s really fun. I mean, I think that obviously it’s really fun to see one that I haven’t seen, and there are style things that are really different that they did after I left, that kind of in my mind, feels really foreign to me. So it always takes a little getting used to.
I’ll give you an example. The set is very disorienting to me, the way they lit it, because I think they actually lit the back of the set brighter than the characters. My thinking was always the set is the background plate and you want to light the characters. So that’s always really disorienting to me. It’s kind of shadowy, and the idea was… It’s just a style difference. Right? Nobody seems to notice, but that’s always a little disorienting for me is the way it’s lit, the whole segment.
Were there any movies that if you really wanted to do, but weren’t available for whatever reason, especially for the Netflix seasons?
It doesn’t work like that. We always start with lists of movies that are clearable. We don’t window shop and then tell the lawyers to go talk to other lawyers about clearing a movie, because that never works. So we just start with movies that are available and use that to create the aggregate of what we can go for.
The thankless job of the show is that you have to watch these movies over and over and over and over again. Are there any movies that just didn’t get old for you?
You’re kind of like an animator when you go through it, so it’s manageable. This one movie that I’m kind of billboard-ing as the next Manos, I’m not even sure I want one writing team to manage it, because I think it would bring a lot of despair. So I’m going to break it up between two or three writing groups. They’ll each manage a third of it, and they don’t have to watch the whole thing and be responsible for riffing on the whole thing. That one I’m really concerned about, and I’m going to make it as a challenge, and I’m going to bring it in when everybody’s got their chops. I mean, it’ll probably be the last movie we write for this series just because I want everybody to feel really comfortable and confident that they can get through it.
I was a big fan of the Dark Horse comic series you guys were involved in. Are there any other special projects cooking or that you’re interested in trying down the line?
Joel: The Gizmoplex is fascinating because it is really limitless, the kind of content we can make for it. And the nice thing is we can do events around specific movies. It’s really wide open, and I’m looking forward to that. It could be a vehicle for a lot of our ideas and a lot of the things we want to do.
I mean, one of the things I’d like to do… We experimented a little bit. We did this with the men and women from Critical Role. We did a night where we read the comic book and it was projected on a big screen in a club. We did it at a comedy club in LA, and it worked really great. So I think it’s very likely for us to do more things like that. If we wanted to, we could do the whole comic book series, and break it up, so it’s 20-minute installments that happen before a feature, or a classic episode, et cetera.
***********
In the meantime, as we get closer to the Kickstarter deadline, the MST3K crew are hosting a series of live events online. Most of them are commentary while they watch classic episodes. Here’s what’s going on, leading to the big finale.

ELLA’S MONTHLY WRAP-UP: SEPTEMBER 2018
I’m not going to lie. September was a slow month for reading, in my most honest opinion. Mainly because I’ve only just gotten used to my work schedule. And lo’ and behold, that schedule changes right into October. Life’s never really simple in this industry I work in--making it hard for me to read my beloved books. But it’s not to say it hasn’t been a great month overall! I’ve received a few amazing books from some close bookish friends, and I can’t wait to share it with you all!
Also, September was the month of The 39th Manila International Book Fair here in the Philippines and let’s just say it’s been a semi-blast (mostly because I didn’t get to see my #LadyBirds because arghhh work), but it was fun because I got to go with two of my co-workers! More on that in this wrap-up, so let’s get right into it!
So if you guys followed my August Wrap-Up, you all know I just got a job last month and it was super new to me. It still feels a bit new even after a month of working for the industry I’m in. It’s not the first time I worked in this industry, but it is the first time where I managed to get a decent dayshift--just very crappy rest days. But overall, I’m slowly getting used to it, and the whole month of September working in my job just proves that I just needed time to adjust to it.
And adjusting to work also meant adjusting my reading schedule. Let me tell you, it has not been easy. The best I could do on a regular work day is read my books/listen to my audiobooks during break time or when there’s no work to be done on a particular day. I mostly do my reading on my rest days, though two days really isn’t enough to read as many books as I wish in one go. Ya girl’s gotta get her decent shut eye at some point.
But less into that, and more into some of the actual bookish things that’s happen this month!
39TH MANILA INTERNATIONAL BOOK FAIR
September was, as I’ve mentioned in the intro, the month for The 39th Manila International Book Fair. It is the biggest book fair in the country to date, the closest we can get to a YALLFest or BEA here, mainly. I normally go with friends to this yearly event, though sadly, with my schedule being Thursdays to Mondays, I only managed to go on the first day of the event (which was on a Wednesday). But it’s not to say I didn’t have fun!
I went to MIBF with my co-worker, RB, and my Team Leader, Ces. You guys could not believe my delight when I heard that a few people at work loves to read books as much as I do. The moment I told them there was a book fair, they were stoked to come with--and am actually surprised they’ve never heard of it before.
We went on the first day (Wednesday) and bought just a few books because we were into the second week after payday so we had very few funds to start with! Here’s my mini MIBF haul:
Tumblr media
Mini MIBF Haul: An Ember In The Ashes by Sabaa Tahir & A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas
I was so frustrated because Book Binge Bazaar happened on a day when I was at work. Luckily, I was able to go because the BBB at MIBF is up until 12 midnight. I come out at 8 in the evening, and I just knew I had to go to the BBB event even if I was only left with leftover books after a whole day of bookworms hoarding every P175 book they can find. I managed to get three for myself, one each for my co-worker and Team Leader, and one for my little brother.
Tumblr media
Mini BBB Haul: The Glittering Court by Richelle Mead, The Diabolic by S.J. Kincaid and The Shadow Queen by C.J. Redwine.
It was not a lot, but it felt good to at least get a few books from this amazing sale!
BOOK TRADE WITH BOOKISH FRIENDS
After the big #BookishWish event on Twitter had slowly died out into September, I thought that it shouldn’t end this way. So I started up a little trade train on my Twitter account. Granted, I was only able to offer up two books from my pile--but I was happy to give those two books new homes.
I was also able to receive one of the books on my #BookishWish, plus a lil’ gift from one of my #LadyBirds friends from the BBB event that I wasn’t able to get much into.
I traded out my copy of These Rebel Waves with #LadyBird Shai (@themeanderingsoul) for her Throne of Glass copy. Then I traded my Don’t Look Back with #LadyBird Angel (@whimsy_wanders) for her Beauty Queens copy.
Tumblr media
Mini Book Trade Haul: Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas & Beauty Queens by Libba Bray.
And a little (or not so little, considering how big this hardcover was) post-birthday gift from one of my #LadyBirds, Ailla (@MioneJeanPotter)! She snagged me a gorgeous hardcover of A Court of Misty and Fury from the BBB event. I cannot thank her enough for this precious copy!
Tumblr media
Post-Birthday Gift: A Court Of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas
Last, but not the least though, the last #BookishWish granted from the event. The Scorpio Races PLUS a little Matthias Helver from the Six of Crows Duology magnetic bookmark from one of my closest and dearest friends in college, Clare (@thebookishpoppet)! I traded my copy of An Ember In The Ashes (one that I got from Shai) over to hers because she wanted to read it after she saw how I raved about it. I’m super excited for her to dabble into the beauty that is the Ember Quartet.
Tumblr media
#BookishWish: The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater
BOOKS READ THIS MONTH
Adjusting to this month with my reading was very difficult, so I was only able to read a handful of books. I mostly just finished the rest of the ACOTAR books and decided that I will do one reread this year of the amazing Harry Potter series.
A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas
A Court of Frost and Starlight by Sarah J. Maas
Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling
Now, you guys may be wondering why I haven’t written a review for the ACOTAR books yet, especially since I’ve expressed several times that I enjoyed reading this series and even went as far as to purchase merch for it.
The honest answer? I was too lazy to write one out. I had planned on writing a review for ACOTAR the moment I finished it, but September was a difficult month to get book reviews out.
Will I ever write a book review for the books? Probably not. My thoughts for the books are long overdue. But to give an overall impression of the books, let’s just say that I absolutely enjoyed all of it. Also, ACOFAS is lowkey not canon because that book was a disaster POV wise and plot wise. I think majority of the fandom can agree with me on that. But I do look forward to more ACOTAR books! I have all three of the series’s books (not intending to buy ACOFAS at all lmao), so that says a lot. I am excited to see where Maas takes the rest of these characters to. I heard there were going to be spinoffs for each character/ship, so we’ll see!
When will you start reading new books? Riiiiight after I finish Harry Potter. I wanted to cheat on my Goodreads a little bit after I made a bloody fool of myself by changing my reading stats of 30 books to 50 books, so I must pay the price. But I will say that I’ll get into Escaping From Houdini by Kerri Maniscalco right after! I just purchased the book on my second salary and I’ve been tempted the whole way home to read it. But I have to wait just a little more for it.
SEPTEMBER BOOK HAUL
Tumblr media
It’s an amazing month for filling up my bookshelf! I can’t thank my friends, MIBF and BBB enough for lessening my shelf space. To be honest, my bookshelf is more of a book trunk at this point. I’m still asking my dad to make me a bookshelf. He said he might have one made for on Christmas, so we’ll see!
Thanks for tuning in to my little rambles for September’s wrap-up! I look forward to writing something out for this blog again, especially with NaNoWriMo looming ever closer. But that’s another story to tell right before October ends.
Happy October and autumn, everyone!

Kraven the Hunter: Marvel Stories That Could Inspire the Spider-Man Spinoff
https://ift.tt/3khheq9
Sony’s Spider-Man expanded universe is a fairly bizarre corner of the realm of superhero movies. Back when Marvel’s Avengers showed what kind of money could be made with an expanded superhero universe, Sony looked at their Spider-Man playset and got a bit drunk on their own hype. Using their ill-fated Amazing Spider-Man movies as a foundation, they intended to make a bunch of spinoffs. Then it died before it could really start thanks to Amazing Spider-Man 2 being a dud that did okay blockbuster money, but not-so-okay money for a property that intended to spread its wings.
Their fortunes changed, both due to their agreement with Marvel to let Spider-Man be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and with the release of 2018’s Venom. Venom showed that they could make a successful movie based on a Spider-Man property without, y’know, actually featuring Spider-Man in it. They’re now following up on that with Venom: There Will be Carnage and Morbius. It’s even becoming apparent that these movies may sorta/kinda be attached to the MCU.
Whatever the case, their plans now include giving Kraven the Hunter his own movie. Not, say, make Kraven the villain for the next MCU Spider-Man movie. I mean putting him front-and-center where he’s the protagonist.
That’s certainly an interesting choice. Kraven is different from Venom and Morbius. Despite being Spider-Man’s Vegeta, Venom spent years being a vigilante with his own comic. Morbius has long been an antihero who occasionally interacts with Spider-Man. Kraven, on the other hand, is a full-on Spider-Man villain. He has, at most, only flirted with being a good guy.
Hey, that reminds me. Remember when Kraven and Sabretooth were on a secret Avengers team that existed at the tail end of the 1950s? No? Just me? Fair enough.
As out of left field as it is, Kraven still makes for a prime candidate to get his own movie. Get past his desire to kill Spider-Man and you have the same driven, hyper-competent, super-skilled, overly-prepared badass type that comic fans love. He’s over-the-hill Batman stomping on Superman’s face. He’s the Punisher killing the Marvel Universe. He’s Dr. Doom defeating the Beyonders. He’s the reason why the Predator went from slasher villain to a race of extraterrestrial cyphers that we cheer on.
So where do you go for inspiration for a Kraven-based movie? Here are some ideas that come to mind.
KRAVEN’S LAST HUNT
“Kraven’s Last Hunt” is THE defining Kraven storyline. It’s to Kraven what “Knightfall” is to Bane.
In it, Kraven defeats Spider-Man, buries him alive, dresses as Spider-Man, does some crimefighting, beats up a villain Spider-Man’s had issues with, feels content in his superiority, digs Spider-Man back up, and then…commits suicide.
A cool story, but how do you make it about Kraven and make it, at best, tangentially about Spider-Man? You could always try and add emphasis on Vermin and make him Kraven’s “white whale,” but would that really work in the long run?
Probably the most important aspect to translate to film would be Kraven’s complete misunderstanding of what being a superhero is about. That part where he’s wearing Spider-Man’s tights and acting like a lunatic on the streets? Take out the cosplay part and you might have something. You could effectively make the Punisher movie that nobody’s had the guts to make. The one that shows him succeeding at hunting and killing his prey, but makes it entirely apparent that this is NOT a good thing, even if the bad guys have it coming.

Marvel’s Avengers Review: It’s No Spider-Man

Seeing him utterly fall apart as a vigilante and get arrested for it would at least help work towards building that long rumored Sinister Six team-up.
GET KRAVEN
Even though Sergei Kravinoff was dead for a while, he still got the Landfill from Beerfest treatment. In other words, he was replaced with another Kraven the Hunter who, for a time, was borderline interchangeable with the original.
Kraven’s son Alyosha picked up where his father left off for a while, but then decided to turn away from his life of crime. In the early 2000s, he got his own miniseries called Get Kraven, which was the only time any version of Kraven has had his own comic. The comic is about Al Kraven and his girlfriend Timber going to Hollywood with the intent of making their own movies. They end up running afoul of two brothers who are very obviously based on Harvey and Bob Weinstein.
And hey, that’s a movie concept that’s strangely relevant in today’s age. Kraven vs. Harvey Weinstein. Predator vs. Predator!

Spider-Woman Movie Coming From Olivia Wilde

That’s pretty much the only part of the comic that is salvageable, unfortunately. The suicide jokes, rape plot point, and transphobia are best left out of well…just about anything…including a Spider-Man spinoff movie.
Anyway, Al Kraven fell into semi-obscurity and got killed off when regular Kraven was resurrected.
ULTIMATE KRAVEN
Ah, Marvel’s Ultimate Universe. Memories. Before it spun out of control, it was such a cool testing ground for new twists on classic characters. Years before Miles Morales became Spider-Man, it gave us the Samuel L. Jackson design for Nick Fury, Hulk as a failed super soldier experiment, and generic-looking Hawkeye. Kraven only appeared a few times, but they were memorable showings.

How to Get Spider-Man in Marvel’s Avengers
By John Saavedra
Initially, Kraven was a reality TV star, loosely based on the then-popularity of the late Steve Irwin. As the ultimate game hunter, he was going to chase ratings by hunting down Spider-Man. This did not work out well for Kraven as after all this hype, he chose to attack Spider-Man while the hero was rescuing people and Kraven got taken out by a single punch.
That in turn ruined Kraven and he got roped into joining the Ultimate Sinister Six. Due to desperation and the fact that he was totally out of his league against Spider-Man, Kraven started undergoing genetic experiments that turned him into something that was more beast than man.
Spider-Man has a lot of animal-themed villains and enough low-ranking ones that you could easily have Kraven spend a movie trying to hunt them down. Give him the depiction of a struggling TV star looking for new challenges and you might have a decent antihero concept.
STORM HUNTER
I’ll admit that this isn’t so much a suggestion based on an existing story, but one that was hinted at.
About ten years ago, Daredevil went kind of crazy, turned into a villain, and took over Hell’s Kitchen with an army of ninjas. He later got his head on straight and left the area behind, but needed someone to take his place. Marvel built up this new series via a bunch of teaser images wondering, “Who is the New Man Without Fear?” Was it going to be Gambit? Nova? Falcon?
Kraven, fresh from being resurrected and needing a new direction in his second life, also had his own teaser image. Kraven the Hunter Without Fear? Hunting down criminals in the concrete jungle and making Wilson Fisk nervous? Trying to be a better Daredevil after once trying to be a better Spider-Man? How awesome would that have been?
Instead, the spot went to Black Panther.
Kraven still showed up during the run for a two-issue storyline based around how cool a Black Panther vs. Kraven the Hunter fight would be (enough that Ryan Coogler initially wanted this in the Black Panther movie). Otherwise, Kraven’s deal is that he’s owed a debt to a doctor that saved his life years earlier. While he has his own sense of honor to complete her mission, he’s ultimately disturbed by the doctor’s horrific actions.
Namely that she likes to create nightmarish human/animal hybrids.
Anyway, Kraven chooses to do the right thing in the end because he’s not a total dick.
THE UNHUNTABLE SERGEI
Kraven’s most optimistic days have come from his friendship with Doreen Green, the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. Unfortunately, while Squirrel Girl is a Steve Ditko co-creation, she probably doesn’t count as a Spider-Man-adjacent character, so we sadly won’t be seeing any movie team-ups any time soon.
Their adventures by themselves wouldn’t really make for a good Kraven movie, especially since they’re mostly based on him trying to redeem himself for his checkered past. It’s the in-between-the-lines adventures that can be mined for inspiration. At one point, Kraven decides to become the Hunter of Hunters, turning him into an on-land version of Aquaman. He’s all about kicking the asses of poachers and…er…dudes quietly minding their own business while fishing.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
What’s important is that this run features the ridiculously metal Kra-Van. If anything, can we PLEASE get the Kra-Van in one of these movies? And can I have it when they’re done?
