Ok another SU Hottake
Not that I don't think the Diamonds and Gem Society are purposefully and explicitly fascist, but I think people over-emphasize how fascist they are, like... aesthetically and therefore tonally.
Like they have a rigid caste and believe in infinite expansion and racial/speciel supremacy yadda-yadda, but like they're way more supposed to resemble a typical depiction of evil aliens then like say, The Empire from Star Wars. And I feel like that's why the show is fine for not treating the Diamonds with the weightiness of an overtly Nazi-like villainous regime, and more like a bunch of fucked up colorful space aliens. Like I think when people act like the Diamonds being fascistic means you're supposed to see them in the same vein as Nazis, they put way more pressure on the show to be more morally absolute than it literally ever wanted to be.
They are first and foremost, weird evil alien women whom are an odd spin on typical "aliens invading earth" narratives. Then, they are meant to represent oppressive and stifling systems both structural and interpersonal as an antithesis to the story's themes of self-expression and freedom. Then FINALLY, because of a collection of that along with a wish for interesting world-building, they are a fascistic empire.
Problems with how the Diamonds and their Empire were treated from a sort of political analysis lense are like the only valid critiques of the series I've ever seen, and like I'm saying here, I still think even they often misinterpret the show's whole vibe. I don't blame people for being wary given recent cultural and political movements that started in the middle of the show's run, but people can still be just a BIT more careful with media analysis. Especially with a show that was so whole-heartedly dedicated to progressive causes.

You know. Maybe the gems were/are emotionally immature people because the majority of them were born in a society where having emotions and personal desires was literally considered a privilege for the elite, and even the elite could only express them in extreme circumstances. Nobody ever really taught them how to regulate anything they felt whatsoever, and that gaping hole in their development followed them even thousands of years after they defected from their shitty society.

I know it’s not a question but i can’t help but appreciate the fact that you draw adult Steven as a chubby guy! We big boys need some positive representation in here. Also, i’ve been following you for almost a year now!
Btw sorry for my English lol.
Hi! It's very pleasing to know you've been around for as long! 😁😁😁 I absolutely appreciate the appreciation! And no worries, your English is super fine! 😁 (Relatable actually. I am also apologizing in advance if I can't exactly have my point clearly across because I'm not well at English myself! lmao)
It took me quite some time to learn how to draw chubby characters but it's so satisfying to have eventually. ( *`u*) (I mean, there's still so much to learn, but still.)
Having a chubby main protagonist is so wonderful to have. And a good kid at that. (Ngl I'm attracted to kindness. haha So of course it's very important to me that he's fat AND kind.)
Also design-wise, I personally think it fits his character so well. Soft and huggable, shaped like a friend. Thick arms to hug people with snuggly. Body wide like a shield. etc. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
And I just really like to capture these elements when I draw him as an adult. Also that it's just fun to draw.
Simply personal thoughts about it, nothing against any other ways he's being portrayed by others of course.

#And it's not even because English isn't my first language. Just generally bad at language. RIP#I had this conversation with someone once where they headcanon he'd get lower back pains if he slim down because of how his gem will#poke or stab his spine#I really like that he's chubby/fat just because. and that he's happy and confident about it#but him being fat not entire by choice is an interesting angle to look at.#I mean obviously he's naturally chubby because of DNA too but you get when I mean. or I hope you do. ;u;#Yo I had a theory.... or at least a headcanon about how his gem is arranged inside his body and how it's practically designed so it can be#passed down eventually without killing him. But I never get to a cohesive written explanation about it so I kept procrastinating.#I like to think the Pink Diamond gem will become like an heirloom. But I digress.#Steven Quartz Universe#Connie Maheswaran#I guess implied connverse#connverse#TFW growing up in media where 'look at us we're different but we are all friends!' And the differences were just personalities and status i#society but the body shapes are practically the same. 😆#They were the same shape because the merch used the same mold. ^^; But I think that contributed to messing up my perception.#Like. The level of unawareness I had in drawing fat characters is crazy back then.#when I thought I drew a chubby character but the reality was that she was still slim! I still have her saved in my Deviant Art account#Nobody would've known because she's my OC.#If I were to argue with that past me that she's not chubby. Past me would be extremely confused because she is totally convinced that she#drew a chubby character. Mind you I was above 18 then too.#I had another OC I wanted to be really chunky but I was so bad at it that I found an excuse why she's so slim so I can avoid drawing chunky#I did eventually made her chunky but I almost never posted any of my OCs lol. She also have a black and pink theme. 🤔#Same with skin color but it happened in my own Sona. I have a tan skin tone and I thought I gave my Sona the same skin...but like... Bruh.#I'm even looking at it now. That is kinda pale. RIP#It still baffles me how different I've been seeing thing in the past. Eugh I'm digressing again. :/#sc answers#ask#luisnavarro04#meme

Remembering the toxic hellscape that was 2015-2019ish SU fandom and just how much hate the show got is really insane when you rewatch the show after it's been a while. Like the show is good what the hell were any of these people talking about
#do NOT quote me on those numbers i pulled them straight out of my ass#like the ending was rushed and the diamonds didnt get to be fully developed but liek#the whole reason that was the case is there was an entire 6th season planned#and then the show got axed early because rebecca sugar and crew refused the back down on the rupphire wedding.#and even rushedness aside like the point of the show was never that you should hug fascists and forgive people no matter what#the diamond were rose's (and his) dysfunctional family whose personal suffering became the basis for the cruelty of gem society#bismuth in The Real World would have been right to want to kill the diamonds as a force of revolution#but the point of the show is that even the most complicated people are still people who can change. even if you dont forgive them#even steven quartz universe the most loving boy in the world very obviously does not like being around the diamonds. but that is how it is#it was a children's show that emphasized compassion and communication and family as themes. of course steven didnt kill the diamonds lol#i really fully believe the stevenbomb format (which was not the crew's choice or fault) cooked peoples' brains#you had months between major arcs so every wrongdoing by a character had months to be warped and misinterpreted and so no resolution could#ever satisfy fans who were festering with their own opinions for way too long#like these arcs looking back are not that long and they resolve in fairly reasonable manners but they took fuckin forever in real time to#wrap up#and ppl on the internet with no other hobbies than arguing made the fandom suck to be in and gave su a bad name#even if you dont like steven universe i think the amount of vitriol thrown at the show is/was fucking INSANE for what it is lmaooo#people were so so jolly to accuse rebecca sugar (a jewish lady) of being a fascist/fash sympathizer and paint every writing shortcoming or#morally dubious character action as a sign of pure fuckin evil#ok that was a long ass fuckin rant in the tags i am so sorry i'm just kind of opinionated on this matter as i am all matters#i've been rewatching su with my dad lately and this very normal and well paced and fun watchthrough experience has been illuminating#just how insane and uncalled for the hellish discourse sphere around su was/is#i say was/is i have no idea what su discourse is like nowadays. i'm too scareds to look in the su crit tag

I know personally as someone who was in my mid-late teens when I watched su, it really mattered to me to get to see a show that said parent figures aren't just right because they said so, and you DO deserve an apology when they hurt you, but one that also had the nuance to show that while you deserve reconciliation and apologies for being hurt by them, they also act with their own reasons and not usually out of a callous disregard for you. Like yes it obviously doesn't flat apply to full on abusive parents, but to parents who were neglectful without really meaning to be or being unable to do anything about it (like, parents who needed to always be at work or who couldn't be there for you) it's actually very relatable and well calculated. Ngl I think some people just dont know what to do with media they don't directly relate to or immediately understand. I did also see a lot of su criticals who tried to claim the show was about forgiving abusers for this exact reason, but I think you only really get that interpretation out of it if you think all media should be about you specifically
In all honesty, the diamonds really did show three different types of parents who are incredibly toxic and damaging to their children without meaning to hurt them.
Yellow is a workaholic, and holds a very strict no-nonsense attitude. She didn’t make time for Pink or treat her problems as legitimate until it was too late, but she did still very clearly care about her. She didn’t let her emotions show to anyone, least of all to herself because she saw them as an obstacle to what needed to be done.
Blue is her polar opposite, she suffered greatly from a loss and (in this case, correctly) blamed herself for every part of it while never actually processing or overcoming her grief. By not taking care of herself, she lashes out at others and cannot move forward. Before Pink was shattered, Blue was indignant, disdainful, and quick to take out frustrations on Pink when she felt “embarrassed” by her not conforming to their expectations.
White was condescending and more dismissive than the other two. Quick to belittle and intimidate to get her way. She loved Pink, yes, but more in the way one might love a nice coat. She was a perfectionist and projected that need to be right and perfect (literally) on every other gem, the other diamonds most of all as they are implied to be of her own creation. Her ego and inability to accept being wrong (or by extension, those she created doing what she decides is wrong) cause her to force Pink to fall into a role that she was never really suited to. She saw Pink as one of her greatest failures and something she needed to either fix or hide away.
All three of them together formed a very deeply toxic and emotionally abusive relationship towards each other and to Pink most of all. A few people take issue with Steven “forgiving” them as they misconstrue it as a victim forgiving abusers, but at the end of the day Steven is not nor was he ever Pink Diamond. He was mistaken for her and felt some of what she experienced because of that, but he was not a long-term victim the way Pink was, in a lot of ways he was an outsider who had context of the situation and wanted to step in to keep them from hurting anyone else.
More to the point, he doesn’t forgive any of them. He calls them out on their toxic behavior and tries to get the point across to each of them that the way they’ve been living isn’t healthy for anyone, and is actively traumatic not only to them but for everyone they hold power over. The end of the series sees him teaching them how to atone for some of what they’ve done and to help others heal, but he doesn’t stay with them, nor does he invite them to stay on earth despite extending that offer to just about every other gem he encountered. It’s established in the movie that he almost never visits any of them outside of his activism and subtly making sure they aren’t regressing into dangerous people again. In the epilogue series he is shown to be (rightfully) distrustful of Blue and Yellow as well as being openly afraid of White. He helped them feel closure for Pink and repaired the relationship the three of them had, and that was it. Even if he had been in that abusive environment for as long as Pink was, that isn’t an unreasonable response. Some victims of (unintentional!) emotional abuse do find catharsis in confronting their abuser once safely out of that situation and expressing the way that behavior harmed them. Some victims genuinely do want their abusers to become better and healthier people when the abusive traits stem from their own trauma or lack of emotional intelligence. There are other victims in the show who completely sever ties with their abusers and never interact with them again, so this wasn’t trying to push a narrative that victims MUST do that, it was giving people language and strategies to approach these conversations if that is something they want to attempt.
This was another of my famous rambles, but I suppose in conclusion I would say: whether SU crits liked it or not, the final arc of Steven Universe was absolutely helpful to people in toxic home environments. It also served as an allegory for queer children not being accepted by their parents for who they are, and how changing your perspective as a parent and accepting your child is legitimately a healthier option for everyone because to do otherwise just ensures you will lose them in every way that matters.
There’s just a lot of important takeaways from that arc, especially for children. I’m incredibly tired of seeing grown adults whining about it because they chose to take it literally. Well done on missing the point of a show for middle schoolers I suppose, but idk if you really just want to see all villains get killed for their villainy just go watch Breaking Bad or the lion king or something. There are plenty of shows where violence is the answer, there’s not any real point getting furious over one of the few that don’t use that as the ultimate conclusion.

Halsin does not know what clowns are.
Tumblr media
I consider this to be vital information.
IT IS AND HE'S SO CONFUSED ABOUT IT TOO 😭
Can't imagine clowns are in high supply in High Forest or the Emerald Grove, or even around the Shadow Cursed lands pre-curse considering it was just a market town, though interesting he didn't encounter anything similar on his youthful "misadventures" inbetween (though he likely avoided cities like the plague and there are probably not lots of clowns in the Underdark...at least not that type of clown).
What's the best thing for me is if you pick him, he's wary and questions the logic in sending him up when he's unfamiliar with "local customs", but he is one of the only companions that approves being volunteered, aside from Wyll and Karlach (of which only Wyll actually seems happy with). Good on you Halsin, up for anything - literally figures the ritual is about being punished but is still such a good sport for literally no other reason than "Well, Tav told me I should, so I guess I will??"
I think the poor man is just happy to be included tbh. Can't imagine this was a good first impression of clowns for him.

honestly props to all of the artists for somehow agreeing on the general silhouette of elven clothing. unfortunately it just kind of looks bad but theres clear Trends going on in the casual clothes at the very least. i wish they played with anachronisms more because each elf should have a different cutoff point from human interaction, and since the elves are so stagnant there are probably still tons of historic clothing in circulation especially among older generations. but then again elves are also more globalized than humans are, so maybe not. i have a lot of opinions on this
I will concede to Shannon that she did create a more difficult species to clothe than some others--location plays a huge role in dress because temperature is so important to survival. And Shannon created a species that is 1. not tied to a specific location 2. can manually regulate their own body temperature (though it does have limits and use of this is rare). Like that's the starting point and it just. Isn't here. and 3. does not age and therefore does not lose culture and knowledge with time the same way
But instead of using this to her unique advantage! She...made an indistinct and altogether unimpressive style? Nothing about it stands out or really reflects on any part of their culture but the wealth they have. There's just a lot of missed opportunities. There's no one right way to go with it, but I don't think what she did was one of them. to maximize the potential.
There is consistency! I'll give them that, I generally have an idea of what they wear, it's just uninteresting--to me, personally. Again. All opinion. When it comes to fantasy species, I want more. Or not necessarily more, but something that makes sense with their world. This. Does not.
Shout out to artists who spice up the clothes you're my favorite people ever <3

Hiii, I was just wondering if you can make another stories of zombie au for the Thenamesh I really miss it, I have some idea of them being trap with a horde of zombie all around them they think that there's no way out of the situation and they saying good bye to each other or something like that before rescue has arrived or something again hahaha, just a suggestion thank you.
Thena pressed her hands to her ears as the banging increased in volume. She should have double checked the perimeter. She should have banged on some of these shipping containers and made sure they weren't full of these things. She should have been more careful, and then she and Gil wouldn't be in this mess.
She opened her eyes, seeing the aged and dirty flannel Gil was wearing. His arms were around her, protecting her as best he could in this hopeless a situation.
Sweet, perfect Gil. The best thing she could have found in the end of the world. The best thing she had ever found at all, maybe.
"I'm sorry, Thena."
She pulled away, looking at him in the dim light - just barely more than pitch black - of what small holes were rusting the corners of the shipping containers away. She blinked and shook her head, as if she hadn't understood the words he was saying at all.
"I'm so sorry," he repeated, practically whimpering, his chest heaving with panic. He blinked and she caught the sparkle of tears in his eyes. "I-I should have checked better, h-helped y-"
"No," she shook her head. No, Gil was at fault for nothing, and she would throw herself to those things outside before she let him believe he was. "No, Gil, you-"
"I shouldn't have-" he choked, pulling her tight against him again as their doom pounded on the rickety outside of their haven. "We should have just gone around. You wouldn't-"
Thena tried to find the words to argue with him. He wasn't making any sense. "No, Gil!"
"You would've made it," he blinked at her, his tears slipping down the apples of his cheeks. She wished she could have heard him laugh more. "You could make it if you weren't dragging me around with you."
"No!" she barked at him, not that it mattered how much sound she made now. If they were going to die in here, then whatever had kept her from saying this before didn't matter, right?
"You," she gulped, looking at him for all she was worth. This was what she wanted to see when and if she died. "You are the best thing that ever happened to me, Gil."
His tears built up again, "but-"
"No buts," she shook her head, forcing him to look at her and pass the words from her lips directly to him. "I am so glad...I am so lucky you found me by accident in that old sports store. Because I have been more sane in this time with you than I ever was in the real world."
"You are so sweet, and so kind, and in a time when you don't have to be," she laughed. Because she was never sweet like him, end of the world or not. But then she found him, and he did things like pick wild berries for her, and stand guard when it was her turn to bathe, and hold up heavy doors while she looted supplies for them.
"Never think you are anything less," she urged--demanded of him. She leaned in, pressing her forehead to his, and then her lips to his lips. "You are the very best thing left in this awful world."
Gil kissed her back, desperate and heartfelt. "Th-Thena, I-I-"
She bit her lip. She was crying too, now. She nodded, but she wanted to say it. If she could never say anything else, she had to be able to say this, right?--in these last moments, this last chance to tell him just how much he meant to her?
How much she loved him?
"Gil, I lo-"
They both flinched. What sounded like a gunshot sounded outside the shipping container serving as their shelter. It wasn't though--it was the backfire from a motorcycle driving down the other side of the road.
Gil held her, their chests moving wildly in the stress of it all. They clung to each other, but the pounding on the outside of the metal decreased, slowly but surely ebbing away. Gil dared to look up from the top of her head. He whispered, "they're following it."
It would have only passed for a few seconds, but it was just enough to draw the attention of those things. With any luck, they would go dormant again once the stimulation was over.
Thena peeked out from his chest. It was true, the dull and lifeless palms slapping against metal was growing quieter. She looked up at him.
They would live.
Gil let out a faint gasp, pressing a laugh of pure relief and hysteria into her hair.
Thena pressed her tears into the t-shirt under his flannel. She liked how he smelled. Under any other smells that clung to him during their travels, he smelled like a house. He smelled like coming home after a long day.
They waited until it was completely silent outside. Opening the door to the thing would probably wake them again, but with any luck it would be a manageable number. Nothing like earlier, at least.
Thena pulled out her knives, walking in front of Gil, as she always did. "Ready?"
"Ready," he said more surely than he usually did, standing beside her with his trusty iron skillet in hand.
She smiled at him--her trusty partner in all this hell around them.
"Hey," he whispered, looking down at her, barely more than a silhouette in the faint light. "What were you going to say?"
"Hm?"
"Before," he glanced back at the far corner where they had pressed themselves in their earlier terror. "What were you going to tell me?"
Thena blinked, a different kind of terror flooding through her. She tightened her grip on her knives. Maybe she could use the adrenaline to move quicker. "I'll...tell you later."
Gil couldn't see the warmth burning in her cheeks.
"Okay," he accepted easily, because he was Gil. He raised his skillet in his hand like a baseball bat, "I'll tell you mine too."
Thena smiled. She wondered what he would tell her come the time. And what would she make up so she didn't have to tell him that she was in love with him? "Deal."

In my silly headcanons, yes. :p I imagine intimacy to be very casual, and even romantic affections among friends to be the norm. There'd still be degrees of how serious a relationship is, with most gems considering their battle partner to also be their primary romantic partner, but intimacy outside of that relationship with even casual acquaintances is seen as entirely normal and unremarkable.
I also imagine jealousy would be less pronounced due to the gems' potentially unlimited lifespans, considering the sheer magnitude of time you can devote to your primary relationship(s).

Today my partner and I discussed getting matching shirts that say "the hot bitch I pulled by being autistic" and each shirt has an arrow that points to the other person.
#original#diary#today we were watching a great show and a moment happened that made us both so happy that we#we skipped right over laughing and spontaneously launched into like a full 30 seconds of full body happy stimming#before laughter could even come out. happy stimming happens when i am so happy i must do something even more joyful than laughing#and she finished before me and i was still going and she came up to me and hugged me and told me i am so cute when i stim#it is like. so cool to discover positive stimming#and as sad as it is i had to suppress it most of my life i not only have it now but i also have a partner who actively encourages it#bc someone who loves you delights in seeing your purest expression of joy and seeks to cultivate that.#she is kind to me always#i just wanna yell at everyone about how they are supposed to be treated bc i wish someone had told me#i wouldn't give up my autism for any material thing in existence bc then i would be steven without his gem#i can happy stim in front of so few people and i generally think of myself as so open. but there are times it is unsafe to stim#and times where that safety or lack of it is unclear. and so masking is an unfortunate but necessary thing#and i have WAY more freedom in dropping my mask than most people bc i am white.#and people of color - especially Black men in my country (guess which one.) - are not given nearly as much leeway by society#but that is a super heavy topic and i am high and it is midnight so we will come the fuck back to that#'do u read critical race theory?'
