What makes BTS most vulnerable

Woo! A reading! I wanted to do this bc its been on my list for a little while now!

I just got off work and wanted to do this asap! Pls forgive mistakes! I'm not gonna proof read bc im lazy.

Cheeky disclaimer: this is for entertainment purposes and not to be taken as fact! This is my interpretation of the cards!!

So so so so

First off, I did each member and also one for the group! I didn't have a specific plan in mind when I started, so I just went with the flow!

Let's start with the group first

So. The 5 of pentacles is what makes them most vulnerable. This card talks about isolation, feeling lost, anxiety, not having money or influence. Most of all, a mindset of lack.

All of this to me makes me think that what makes them most vulnerable is the fear of being right back where they started. Feeling exiled from the industry, not having the funds to be sure of a stable future and also not having a strong sense of identity as a group and within the group. It's like their vulnerability comes from something almost like ptsd? Let me try to make that make more sense. I genuinely think that where they started and the uncertainty and constant ridicule really had an impact on them. The vulnerability they have as a group is essentially emotional distress? Like, I wish I had better words to explain. It's the fear that they haven't actually grown or gotten anywhere and that they are insignificant that is their vulnerability. Fear based on where they started?

I really hope that made sense. Moving on though, 7 of swords is how it manifests for them. This card is sneaky. It talks about getting away with something and betrayal but I think this meaning is the most relevant: strategic moves. So how their vulnerability manifests is that the fear that they have causes them (and the company) to make very specific moves to keep their fears from happening. It's like, they take steps to make sure their fears don't get realized. Career wise but also personally. They can sometimes force growth because they fear stagnation. Kinda like rolling something uphill? Once it loses momentum it starts rolling back down.

The other two cards, Wellness and busy times and multitasking, are what they can do to lessen that vulnerability. Keeping healthy in mind body and spirit (also keeping the group bond healthy too) as well as channeling their emotions and fears into productivity. (Think the ly:tear album)

Seokjin

This is really intresting. So, what makes him most vulnerable is repressed emotion that causes inner turmoil. The moon is all about your insides and the vastness it has. In its reverse it talks about the darker parts of your subconscious. So, him bottling shit up and repressing it becomes a monster that affects him without him even necessarily knowing.

As for how that manifest in his life, it literally affects his judgment. Like, literally. It messes with his decision making.

As a fellow human with a similar problem, I can almost bet that any issue he has with another member will be shoved away and it will fester until he's at his breaking point and he'll absolutely weaponize it but disguise it as "just poking fun" or he might also purposefully create low level chaos. It's really intresting because this could manifest in so many ways. It could be his insecurities, issues with other people, fears ect and they fester in his brain space fucking with his judgment.

What he can do to lessen this vulnerability is deep emotional healing. Istg these cards are too perfect to make up. He needs to do THE WORK and heal it. He probably recognizes this and is working on it. Its not fair to himself to put himself aside in order to put other people first. (I think this probably happened a lot in the early bts days bc he had to be an older brother and a responsible figure to 6 other kids so he prioritized group harmony over his own issues and emotions)

Yoongi

????

Um, okay. So what makes yoongi most vulnerable is the dark side of wealth. That's the 10 of pentacles rev. But it gets interesting bc the 10 of swords isn't what makes him vulnerable but it also isn't how it manifests?? So here's my theory time. What makes him most vulnerable is the dark side of wealth. I can only assume that it's the isolation and internal conflict of benefiting off of a system that fucked you over in the first half of your life and also feeling bad for having wealth that most people can never imagine? I really don't know? But with the 10 of swords talking about betrayal and deep wounds, it could be that he's extremely afraid of being taken advantage of? Like, that's another downside of wealth. Maybe people have tried to use him for money or influence? Especially in his personal life. Like, he probably finds it extremely hard to get close to people because he's afraid of betrayal over something that is already hard for him to deal with?

Also loss. He wasn't born rich. He worked his ass off to get what he has and he's probably afraid to lose it. He might "stash" money?

Anyway, knight of swords, how it manifests. This card is about a drive to succeed. So essentially this makes him run and push himself hard and harder and harder to out run what he sees as an inevitable end? Sometimes this can blind him.

As for what he can do to lessen this vulnerability, we have, self confidence through God confidence. This card to me talks about having faith in your actions and skills and trusting in yourself even if you doubt your ability. Essentially, yoongi just needs to trust in himself to land on his feet no matter what happens. Life is always uncertain so he needs to trust that he can weather any storm he might face.

Hoseok

This was one gave me some thoughts. So, similar to jin, it's the bottling shit up and having you subconscious mind eventually figure shit out because it's been neglected but with the 2 of swords in reverse, talking about confusion and being indecisive, I think this kinda causes him to shut down? He might get apathetic. It's almost like when you work a computer so hard that it crashes.

And how this manifests for him with the 3 of pentacles in reverse is that he gets thrown out of alignment with the group. Kinda like how you shouldn't drive on a flat tire. He withdraws and becomes hard to reach and puts up a wall that causes a lot of problems for him as well as those he is around. It's a defense mechanism. It can also manifest in him preferring to work alone as well instead of group settings.

This exposes him to depression and doubt.

Also similar to jin, for how to lessen this vulnerability we have Bless your heart with talks about reaching out (breaking down that wall) and healing your heart and healing the root issue.

Namjoon

Okay. This is the one that makes so much sense but also confuses me.

So. What makes him most vulnerable is the magician rev and 10 of cups. Unrealized potential and poor planning as well as love, harmony and alignment.

So.... what? How does love and the happiest happiness make him vulnerable?

Well, I think he's suspicious of it. I think that he can't help but wonder in his big big big brain if THIS is the right happy or if its really happiness at all? Almost like commitment issues but also not? It's like, he's afraid that it won't last? He might have trouble fully allowing himself happiness. Also, what makes him the most vulnerable is love. It opens up every bit of his soul and puts it on a laundry line for everyone to see and I don't think he thinks he's worthy enough to be seen like that?

As for how it manifests in his life, 9 of cups, personal fulfillment and a strive to have everything else in hislife sorted out? Essentially wanting to have a perfect foundation so eventually he can share with all the important people in his life.

As for what he can do. Value your self worth. pretty straight up. He needs to value himself more. He deserve love and he deserves to feel seen even if it's uncomfortable at first.

Jimin

Oki. What makes jimin most vulnerable is choice. The 7 of cups talks about focusing on what's best for you and making choices based not on illusion. I think jimin is plagued by unrealistic expectations and confronting the fact that it's not possible is what makes him most vulnerable. He makes choices that are driven by illusion. Usually about self. I think specifically about how he doesn't always see how good he already is so he pushes himself to chase after something that isn't always right for him or even there in the first place. Acknowledging and facing it brings vulnerability that he doesn't always want to face. I think he might equate vulnerability to powerlessness.

How it manifests. 9 of wands rev. Paranoia and being defensive. It's his own fear and insecurities manifesting outside of himself.

As for what he can do, passion and purpose and multifaceted. Focus on what is close to his heart and don't get side tracked. Theres so much more to this situation and there isn't an easy fix. There's a lot of things that need working on in order for him to feel comfortable.

Taehyung

Oki oki oki. What makes Tae most vulnerable is strength rev. Raw emotion. He doesn't always express his emotions and when he chooses to be more open, his emotions go through a bit of a filter. Showing his unfiltered emotions makes him most vulnerable because it's him as he is. In his truest form. It's all of his wants, joys, fears. Everything.

As for how it manifests, 10 of wands and Hanged man, it becomes a burden that he carries because he feels like he can't just be honest. He pauses and allows himself time to feel on his own but that means possibly being misunderstood and a bit isolated.

Now. What can he do to lessen it? Bless your heart and healthy communication in relationships. TALKING TO PEOPLE AND ALLOWING HIMSELF THAT VULNERABILITY. It's not bad to be vulnerable. Heal that shit bb bc you are worth it.

Jungkook

So, what makes him most vulnerable? The world in rev. Not having closure and seeking it. The process of seeking closure for himself about things that could have or putting to rest something that has come full circle. It brings vulnerability because he has to face things that he could have done better. He has to face things coming to a close and be okay with is.

How it manifests, the tower, ace of cups, 5 of cups reversed.

The tower is essentially everything crumbling down. I think jk thinks too much? If you follow a ball of yarn all the way to the end then you just unraveled a whole ass ball of yarn.

Him going to close those things cause him to unravel his foundation.

With the ace of cups, creativity and love/ new emotions, I think him taking the time to pursue personal closure helps him to be more open to love as well as giving him creative fuel.

The 5 of cups rev. Means that him doing this closure thing helps him to forgive himself bc he's taking time to move on and tie up loose ends?

For jk this closure thing manifests in every aspect of his like and I almost see it as him shedding? Sounds weird but he's consciously moving on and paying attention to what he needs?

As for what he can do? Deep emotional healing! He runs the risk of feeling more of the tower manifestation so he needs to keep himself emotionally healthy in order for this to be productive instead of destructive!

Vlad’s rapier (all the R-C have one) is called ‘Beheaded Voivode’. He can set the blade aflame through Alchemy.

Louisa was exiled from Altazor at the age of 20, then lived in Venterre and Zadith, were she finished her medical studies. She moved to Balkovia for what was supposed to be a 6 months programme and scientific coven, but then she met Vlad and she ended up staying. She was exiled for opposing the dictatorial regime existing in the country.

While Louisa knows alchemy —which she learnt to become a better doctor— she doesn’t consider herself a magic user. She, however, can lend her life force to Vlad if the need arises. This creates a unity of energy between them which Vlad can channel into more powerful alchemy. This is because they’re beneficiaries of The Lovers.

Thematically both of them are about breaking bad parenting cycles. Vlad’s parents were notoriously irresponsible, neglectful and despondent parents, with Matilda being even cruel and purposefully hurtful. Louisa’s were extremely unaccommodating, strict to the point of traumatising and extremely hypocritical. Neither of them wished to have children until they realised they could do it together.

Vlad and Louisa did not marry until the war in Balkovia ended. It began months before Anatole was born, and it ended when he was around the ages of three/four.

Vlad calls Anatole ‘Lilu’ and ‘Lily’, it comes from little.

Vlad’s monocle is functional. It’s made of alchemy altered glass and it’s the design of a group of fellow alchemists and Vlad himself. He has very little vision on his left eye due to almost blowing up a room trying to stabilise fireroot. He was successful, making him the first person to ever stabilise the compound through a stable, long-lasting method. In the future, Anatole uses his father’s alchemic breakthrough to provide public lighting to the streets of Vesuvia. This method is currently used in Balkovia for public buildings, since it requires very little money to run.

Both of them are quick tempered, but understanding with people they love. It’s if they don’t like you the problem.

Originally, Vlad thought Louisa was an alchemist because she was describing the process of lightening up a Molotov.

Louisa knows how to use firearms. She learnt in Altazor, when she began getting involved in the fight and protest against the dictatorship in it. She still has good aim, but is out of practice and prefers it that way. She prefers to focus in ways to help those affected.

Her best medicine is ER medicine and field medicine. She is trained to be a war doctor and was a volunteer when time permitted in the Balkovian war.

While Louisa’s relationship with her parents eased with time, it is not good. She prefers to keep them at a distance.

Originally, Aureliana and Joaquín opposed Louisa marrying Vlad. They even tried to make her go back to Altazor or at least Venterre when the war began, but Louisa told them she would rather take out her own femur and eat it. She, clearly, harboured a lot of resentment for them, as they were key to her exile. 

Louisa’s favourite Radošević outside of her husband was Elysian. It was the first time she had a positive role model whose politics were the same as hers, and didn’t punish her for it.

Vlad’s biggest personality trait is ‘I Love My Wife, I Love My Son’.

Louisa was one of the few doctors to treat poor people in Vesuvia who caught the Plague.

Vlad can only draw objects (for invention designs) and buildings.

Both of them read a lot. It’s not weird to find them having reading dates.

Vlad has a series of Alchemic symbols tattooed around his wrist. He uses them as magic on-the-go.

When raising Anatole, they privileged communication, autonomy, self-expression and support more than anything else. Even through his argumentative teenager phase.

Speaking of their son, Anatole takes after Louisa in terms of politics, moral compass, and determination to see things done and to do what is right.

Vlad’s politics can be summarised in “If you’re told not to tamper with the shelf, and you do, and it falls on your head, then that was your own damn fault”.

Whenever Vlad began brooding because he was “sure” Louisa didn’t like him, his cats bit him.

Louisa housed and protected her sister Paris when she ran away from Altazor looking for her, upon discovering the real reason why her sister was sent away. Paris showed up out of the blue at her doorstep. Their other sister, Alma, helped her orchestrate the escape.

Louisa gets ready in 30 minutes, tops. Vlad in 2 hours.

While Valerius acts like he can’t stand her, he actually loves and respects Louisa a ridiculous amount.

Vlad is more emotional than Louisa but has more trouble showing it. He’s gotten better with time.

Vlad sails. Louisa always makes fun of him for being insanely competitive, but joke’s on her because she’s just as bad. As a true Aquarius sun and a Sag moon, she hates being told what to do. Whenever she gets like that, Vlad just looks at her with heart eyes.

Vlad is closest to Violeta Radošević, Milenko’s mother, out of his generation of cousins. 

Except for formal occasions, Louisa doesn’t wear shirts or dresses that go past her ankles. Prefers them to the calf, as she needs to be able to move freely (she moves a lot).

It’s very likely Louisa is the one with undiagnosed ADHD out of the two of them, hence where Nana gets it from. She’s never checked. 

Louisa loves dancing (so does Vlad but he hates admitting it), and she taught Anatole most of what she knew. As she grew up, she was constantly in dancing lessons, inspired by her own mother’s love of ballroom dancing. It’s one of the few things she’s fully grateful about.

This is more of a language fun fact than anything else, but Alzor and Nopali are extremely similar languages, and are almost virtually interchangeable.

They both stand by ‘one child is enough’ but end up adopting all of Anatole’s friends on accident, sometimes, even his partners a little, depending on the verse we are in.

Finally, out of the Arcana canon characters, Vlad would get along the best with Nadia, Salim and Aisha. Louisa would get along the best with Nadia, Julian and Portia.

Pick-a-Pile: Who’s crushing on you?

I thought we’d have a little bit of fun today and see who has a crush on you (and why not? You’re fabulous!) So, pick one of the Lovers cards from my decks. Remember, this is a general reading so it may be that the piles don’t resonate with you. Also, it could be that more than one pile resonates.

Pile 1: 

Cards:  4 of pentacles, page of wands reversed, ace of wands reversed, 10 of pentacles, 8 of wands, 10 of cups, six of swords reversed, whip, mouse, bear, berkana, wunjo "I tend to focus on the past and not the now." - Curveballs by the Wombats 

"I think about you way more than anything else." - Quiet Light by The National 

Pile 1, I'm not really sure if your person seems to know what they want for themselves, so if you have an idea of who this is and you may return their feelings, I don't think things will work out well. That's at least for now. This could change in the future. I also feel bad, because not a lot came out about this person. I feel like looking at what did come out, this became clearer, but I feel bad since I had so much to say about pile two. Though, that one was a little similar, so if you were choosing between both piles, then maybe check it out. It was only a little similar. Firstly, this is a person who has a lot of anxiety and can be prone to being stressed easily. They could be a boss of some type. Though, its funny because I do read the bear card as that, but I also see that they may have issues with rules. They may clash with authority figures. Though, if you think about it, working their way up to being a boss may be the best way to overcome this so that they don't have anyone telling them what to do. I see that financially they're stable, I can't tell you if they're rich or not, but I can tell you that they're doing okay with themselves. They are a hard worker, even if they get stressed easily. And despite these stresses, they do see the bright side of things, and I think they have the possibility of becoming really successful (with whatever that means for them). I think they can sometimes be a perfectionist, though I also see them as someone who has trouble focusing. So it may be that they start something, put their all into it, but then something else catches their eye. Now, here's where it gets a little iffy. First off, they're holding their feelings in for you (which I guess is the point of this whole reading), but I believe its to the point where they're guarding their heart closely. I think they've recently gone through some change that brought on a new beginning, though I'm not seeing if this is something painful or not, just that they're at a point in their life where they're beginning something. I also can't tell you what kind of change this is, just that they went through a big enough change that it showed up in the reading. Now, for some of you, I see this as someone who's already in a relationship, in which case I'd steer clear of them if they do decide to stop guarding their heart and feelings. This is probably just for a few of you, but I do see this. For all of you, this is a person who's argumentative. They love to start things, though I don't have a lot of sword cards, so I almost feel like it's not the debate they enjoy, but rather riling people up. Also, they're a big show off, though I feel like they're mostly all talk. Possibly super nostalgic, too. They may reminisce a lot about their childhood, or the past. I see that they're not really sure what they want in terms of love, so a lot of them are non-committal right now. If you're into that, then I guess that's great! This person, when their mind is made up, they're fast moving. So, I'd watch out for that. Though, I have to tell you that they're really passionate about you. I asked what they felt for you, and I got Queen of Wands, so they're really attracted to you and they're feeling passionate about you. They also think about you a lot ( your lyrics mention this, but also a cover of Losing My Religion came on, and I feel like maybe they hear someone laugh and think it's you or something. I think your laugh is significant to them). Just remember that they seem to move on quickly once something else catches their eyes. Looks wise, this is going to be pretty general. I see a LOT of blues, so I think there's a possibility they may have blue eyes or wear the color blue a lot. A lot of whites and yellows, too, so maybe their hair is dyed white or maybe they got white hair already (so maybe for some, this is someone who's older). Possibly blonde hair, or just plain yellow, so perhaps they dress a little unconventional  and have dyed their hair yellow. For others this person has dark hair. I don't think anyone has long hair, and if it is a little longer, it only goes to the shoulders. In terms of signs, I think they're probably a fire (aries, sagittarius, or leo) or earth (cap, taurus, virgo). Songs:

Pile 2:

Cards:  the sun, the world, page of wands, ten of cups, 8 of cups reversed, ace of cups, three of cups, knight of pentacles, flowers, tree, heart, wunjo, gebo "I'm addicted to the soundtrack. I need the noise." Don't Know Yet - Silversun Pickups "Love is patient, it's a trip to the beach, and a week to resuscitate." - Breathe Underwater by Big Scary Whoever this person is, Pile 2, they're a little closed off at first. It makes me think that they take a while to get to know about. But then, I was actually getting A LOT about this person.  Like they weren't sure at first, but now they want to talk.The first being that they may already be in a relationship (gosh, second pile to maybe have that, but this one I actually really believe this), or you may be in one. Either way, someone is already with someone else, so there's intense pining in this pile. Though, you got two major arcana's to describe them, ten of cups, ace of cups and the heart, so I really feel like this is a strong connection. Like, you two met and were immediately into eachother. So, I do also think this could be mutual. And despite them not seemingly available, they actually seem like a catch. First off, they're an optimistic person. Either they're usually in a good mood, or they're always trying to see the bright side of things. They're well traveled, or at least aware of other cultures and try to stay informed. They could even be bilingual. They're a hard worker, and can be quite enthusiastic. Like the last pile, I do see that they're someone who may start things and rush into other things while in the middle of the other things. Though, unlike the other pile, I do feel like this person follows through eventually. I think that even though they may jump around with projects, they're still pretty good at managing their time. They're really creative, and for most, I'm seeing that they express this through music (the lyrics from Silversun Pickups back this up.) I think this person may like the outdoors. Or, they could be really into nice things, like nice cars and clothes and the like. I don't think they're super materialistic, just that they like nicer things, though some of them may put a little more importance on money and material things than there needs to be. I do think they're very caring and giving to others.  But I also think they care about you too. I think you two are friends, though I get that this may have ended or there's a least been little communication for a bit. At least things have been quite stagnant (Road to Nowhere came on when I was thinking this, so yeah. I'd say.) I think you two are going to be getting back into contact. I can't tell you how things will go, or if they're still with someone else. But, I pulled lyrics from Big Scary's song Breathe Underwater, and they seem to indicate that if you guys want this connection to continue either as a friendship or as more, something may need to be resuscitated. The song says "Love is patient, it's a trip to the beach and week to resuscitate." So, I see that there is hope, but only if you both want this. And, again I need to reiterate the fact that there is possibly a third party, but this could also be a job or something else and not a person, but I'm still telling you to be upfront to this person about things. If you don't want to get tangled in something like that, be clear. There is a possibility it will happen, just not now. I also think for some this could be a karmic connection. I first thought this when Karma by Marina came on while I was shuffling the cards, but I was kind of like "Nahhh" but then I pulled the tree card, and that can mean karmic connection. My parents are Democrats incidentally and fully support this.

I used to love book-reviews, the language of dictionaries that could seem to get life so right, "Validity in Interpretation," the days when newspapers seemed to love me more than my own teachers, Colossians 4:6, editing sprinkled with salt, giving reason for hope, appropriate, apt, jeongdokhada. They get old and old and much is made of the things we can experience; sometimes I think that my dear friend quit Samsung too soon to know how to build his own team and I quit at least three jobs too soon and didn't stay in hot pursuit and now feel almost as if only my thoughts are as brightly alive with a love-light as your face once was. I get so lost at shopping malls, drowning; I don't get what anyone is up to. There was a Monsignor who composed or redacted this immense ethnography of all Korea but it must have broken his heart too, man who never took a wife, knitting red, his memory, the kind of person who arrives as I, watching Pompeo et al, in the hope of a benevolent ruler both forever and for the time being too... My friend used to say I could lead but I couldn't even shut down the snark-machine and Reddit had a field day with me and honestly maybe I've never loved anyone adequately. Let's be young a while more and though I didn't like this as a kid we can talk to the TV like at my grandparents' house long ago and again born on the new day, maybe we'll spend some time married.

Trouble at the Tea Shop (Part 4)

After their little spat had passed, the two had actually begun to somewhat enjoy each other’s presence. Rachael began to make a habit of coming into the shop whenever she could. Rather it be during her lunch break at work, a coffee run for those at her internship, or for some much needed study time. She told herself it was because of the calming atmosphere and good tea, and not at all anything to do with a certain blonde-haired barista.

The change fiasco had long passed as well. Mainly, because she made sure she always had the exact amount of money owed. So naturally they had to find other ways to bother each other, and this time, it was Logan who initiated it.

It stared on a day when she came in during her lunch break. Since she only had 20 minutes to eat and get back to work, she had to have her order to-go. She had just started coming into the café during her lunch hour, and the young man had begun noticing an incredibly horrifying fact about the women. She didn’t eat. Every time she came into the shop, she’d order the same bitter tea and that was all. Normally, it would not have bothered him as much as it did, but this was the women’s lunch break for crying out loud! Certainly, she would want to order a pastry to satisfy her hunger.

When he first brought the issue up, she simply shrugged it off stating, “I’m not much of an eater.” Her thin waist was proof of that. However, her answer did nothing to satisfy his concern. He spent a lot of time mulling the issue over, and never held back his need to pester the poor girl about it since. When he finally had enough of her strange eating habits (or lack there of), he decided to take matters into his own hands.

“Here.” He said, handing her a little brown bag, neatly folded at the top. She stared at the bag like it was a foreign object.

“What’s this?” She questioned.

“Call it an early birthday present.” He shrugged.

Narrowing her eyes at him, she tentatively took the small bag from his hand. Curious, she cautiously peeled back the top and peered inside. Her eyes widened comically as she began to register what he was doing exactly.

“Logan, I can’t except this. I didn’t pay for it.” She protested and tried to shove the bag back to him, but he folding his arms and shook his head.

“I told you, it’s on the house. Call it a gift if you want, but I’m not taking it back.”

She stared at him curiously, and the intensity of her stare unnerved him a bit. He felt like she was reading his mind or peering into his very soul. Finally, she broke her silent stare. “But…why?”

“Because,” He stated flatly. “I’m tired of you starving yourself. I never see you eat, like ever. And I may not be a scientist, but I do know that all animals, including moody workaholics are supposed to eat.”

She glared at him now, slightly offended by the adjectives he used to describe her. “First of all,” she raised her pointer finger. “I’m neither moody nor a workaholic. I simply have little time for nonsense and stupidity. Second of all,” she raised her middle finger, “I do eat. Just not constantly like you seem to want me to.”

The man scoffed at that. “I don’t want you to eat constantly! I’d just feel better if you’d eat something every now and then.”

“And why exactly do you care so much about my eating habits?”

She got him there. Suddenly, an embarrassing red blush creeped up his freckled cheeks and he began to choke on his own words.

“I…er…I don’t…well I mean…I…um…” He babbled on, clearly flustered at her question.

Rachael was quite amused to say the least. It wasn’t often she was able to make the man speechless, but when she did she treasured every second of it. With a sinister grin, she collected her tea and bag and leaned over the counter, her face only inches away from his.

“If I didn’t know better, Logan, I’d say you might just have a little crush on me.” She whispered in a low, seductive voice that only he had the unfortunate pleasure of hearing.

His face become an even darker shade of red, if that was even possible. His whole body seemed to sweat as his blood rushed to certain areas he was not comfortable admitting. His brain seemed to forget how to function as he watched her lean back off the counter and sway her hips towards the door. She turned to him, thanked him for the complimentary muffin, then with a flirtatious wink she walked out the door.

That day definitely left its mark in his memory. He knew he had to get back at her some how, the question was what could he do to make her just a flustered as she had done to him. Unfortunately, he came up short on ideas.

She came in the next day, during her lunch break, and ordered her usual hot tea. She didn’t mention their conversation from yesterday, but the unwavering smirk plastered on her face told him she had not forgotten the embarrassing moment. It was only a matter of time before she decided to tease him more about it. He certainly would not had just let it go had the roles been reversed.

Logan went to the back counter, and began preparing her tea. It was a pretty simple recipe. Push a button, fill the cup with hot water, then add in the tea bag. Since she had to get going, he made the tea in a paper cup. Once he was finished, he added the lid on top and began walking it over to the dark haired beauty waiting at the register. He took about two steps before he abruptly turned back around and grabbed a permanent marker from the back counter.

“What are you doing?” She asked him with a raised eye brow.

“Writing your name on the cup.” He stated as he quickly scribbled on the plain white cup. When he was done, he walked back up to the register and handed the cup to her. “Here ya go!” He chirped as he began punching in the numbers on the register.

Curious, she raised the cup up to her eye level, then scrunched her face up in annoyance.

“What’s this?” She questioned angrily as she turned the cup around for him to read what he wrote.

“Um…your name?” He answered honestly, unsure as to why she was upset at the fact.

“No it’s not.” She hissed at him. “My name is Rachael. You wrote Rae! See?” She shoved the cup in his face, making him take a small step back.

Now it was his turn to be annoyed. “Yes, I can see. I’m the one who wrote it, aren’t I?” He said sarcastically and pushed the cup out of his face. “Rae is short for Rachael. Didn’t you know that?”

“Of course I know that!” She defended. “I just don’t like it. My name is Rachael. That’s what is on my birth certificate. That is how I introduce myself. Which is why I want to be called by my name, not some shortened version of it!”

She was the red faced one today, but out of anger.

“Well sorry I didn’t know it was so important for you to have your full name written on a disposable cup!” He retorted, his voice rising up a notch.

“Well why even write my name on it in the first place? It’s not like anyone else ordered English Breakfast tea!” She challenged, her voice also rising in anger.

“Because management told me I had to, okay? I was just doing my job!” He said, lowing his voice as they were starting to form an unwanted audience. Rachael seemed to take the hint, and started taking deep breaths to calm herself down.

“Well fine, but if you must write my name on the cup, could you at least use my full name.” She reasoned with him.

“Which is?” He teased.

“Ugh! Just write Rachael next time!” She yelled as she stormed out of the shop with her tea in hand.

Logan grinned evilly as an idea began to take root into his devilish mind. This was going to be fun.

Petition calls for the return of Dr. David Unwin’s sugar infographics

Have you seen the petition to the UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), asking its decision-makers to reinstate Dr. David Unwin’s sugar infographics?

At Diet Doctor, we have a lot of respect for Dr. Unwin, MD. He is a member of our medical review board and hosts a video series for clinicians, explaining the practical use of low-carb diets in a family practice setting. We have also featured him on our Diet Doctor Podcast.

Why are we such big supporters of his? For starters, his mission aligns with ours. Like at Diet Doctor, Dr. Unwin aims to help individuals dramatically improve their health with easy-to-understand information about nutrition.

And this mission is consistent with the purpose behind Dr. Unwin’s infographics. If you haven’t seen them, they use the glycemic index to graphically display the equivalent amount of sugar per teaspoon in common foods like spaghetti, bananas, and sugary cereals.

Patients routinely comment on how easily digestible the information is when presented in this way. The reason these graphics are so easily understandable stems from the fact that the everyday person often doesn’t react when talking about a glycemic index of 72 or 75. By contrast, if we show them a teaspoon of sugar, most better understand the significance.

That’s part of what makes Dr. Unwin’s graphics so powerful.

For people whose bodies have difficulty processing dietary carbohydrates, a visual describing how around 1 cup of cornflakes breaks down into roughly the equivalent of 8.4 teaspoons of sugar is sobering. Or, understanding that about a ⅔ cup of oat porridge breaks down into the equivalent of 4.4 teaspoons of sugar may help people rethink their breakfast choices.

But like many attempts to simplify things for better understanding, Dr. Unwin’s charts aren’t perfect. This is largely due to the fact that the glycemic index itself is not a perfect measure of how foods affect an individual’s blood sugar levels.

Some researchers have pointed out that there is a wide variation between individuals when the glycemic index value of a food is measured. In fact, even the same individual tested on different days can respond very differently. This is why the glycemic index is based on a very large number of test subjects.

Also, many other factors, such as the ripeness of fruit, can alter a food’s effect on blood sugar, another reason large numbers of tests are done to determine the glycemic index.

Additionally, depending on the “food vehicle” that transports the sugar in a certain kind of food, how fast blood sugar becomes elevated also differs. For example, oat porridge may cause a slower, less steep rise in blood sugar compared to 4.4 teaspoons of pure sugar.

But, for people with diabetes, the overall amount of sugar in certain foods matters. For them, it’s not only about how fast a specific food causes blood sugar to go up.

As other researchers have pointed out, the glycemic index of a particular food may not show how long that food can elevate blood sugar, especially in people with diabetes. Instead, the total amount of sugar matters when a patient’s body is struggling to process dietary glucose.

The flaws in using the glycemic index as a basis for these charts were pointed out in a recent article published in The Mail on Sunday. Journalist Barney Calman questioned the validity of the charts, citing a series of “eating challenges,” which showed how the rises in blood sugar for two individuals were lower when consuming specific foods — rather than simply eating their sugar equivalents.

As a result, Calman questioned whether NICE should be using the graphics, and NICE officials subsequently removed them from their resource library.

On one hand, Calman is absolutely correct. For many people, the blood sugar response to the food vs the sugar equivalent will not be exactly the same. A banana is nutritionally different from sugar. After all, a banana contains important nutrients, while sugar does not. But is this the point?

Dr. Unwin’s graphic is a simplification of a complex process. It was meant to help explain complicated topics like glycemic index, glycemic load, and carbohydrate content to patients with a specific diagnosed condition.

Dr. Unwin created an efficient and understandable way to communicate with the patients he sees in his office who are asking for his assistance. That is not the same as developing a public health message that applies to all individuals.

Young or active individuals without metabolic disease will react differently to oatmeal, whole-grain bread, and fruit when compared to those who are obese, have insulin resistance, and are fairly sedentary. That is too complex an array of reactions to show in a simple graphic.

Until we can come up with simple-to-understand graphics that include individual variation, Dr. Unwin’s graphics are among the best and make it easy to visualize how even so-called “healthy foods” convert to sugar.

How our bodies then handle consuming these foods from a blood-sugar perspective is the next step.
