I saw that you finished the fourth wing! How did you like it?? I thought it was a super entertaining read but the world-building was lacking
i enjoyed it! i feel like i was ready for a break from romance books so this was something perfect to pick up.
so yes i agree the world building was a bit lacking but i heard this is a five book series so i have some hope? tbh i like that it’s not overly complicated bc i find with some fantasy books its too much and i can’t remember everything i need to. i like the characters in the book and i’m interested to see where it goes and i think it’s going to be easy and entertaining to read and i won’t get bogged down which is exactly what i want

Reading a court of thorns and roses bc it's been rec'd to me many times (by the same two friends mostly) and also I've never really read a smut novel before and Jesus christ this protagonist is insufferable
#first of all its like the author tried to recreate katniss everdeen without any fundamental understanding of her character#like the reason the whole 'i hunt and provide for my family because no one else will' thing works for katniss is that her mother is ill#and her sister is like 8 years old#so like yeah obviously she'd be the one to provide#but feyre is like 'i have to do everything around here because my two OLDER sisters simply dont feel like doing chores'#like what????#i get that her dying mother for some reason put the responsibilities on her but it makes 0 sense#like whoever wrote this was clearly a youngest sibling with a martyr complex because its just. so heavy handed#also her insistence that nesta is simply too shallow and vapid to do what she does makes me roll my eyes every other page#honestly justice for nesta#1) if my sister started doing all of the hunting and providing without ever communicating why i would probably assume she wanted to do it#2) if after our mothers death she started completely resenting everything i do and glaring at me constantly id think she blames me for it#3) being around that kind of smug negative energy would absolutely make me start to be a little mean too even just as a defense mechanism#4) shes constantly assuming the worst in nesta and is proven at least twice to be an unreliable narrator in regards to nestas priorities#also that comment feyre made about how smug she felt after leaving knowing that her family would 'starve without her' god what an asshole#like you cant present yourself as so much morally better than your sisters and then turn around and say shit like that#anyway im hoping she becomes less insufferable as the story goes on#im told the first book is the worst in the series so i just gotta power through for the sake of world building#j reads acotar series#<<<feel free to blacklist if u dont want spoilers and/or critiques of this series bc i plan to vent on here a lot abt it

Hello! I would like to request a Hazbin match up!
•my name is Angel and I go by she/they, I’m pansexual and I don’t have a preference!
•I’m 5’8 and tower over all my friends (and I hit my head a lot but we don’t speak of that)
•I collect bones of all different kinds of animals! I find them quite beautiful :)
•if I were to try to describe my aesthetic it would be witchy Victorian jester vibes (I have a red Victorian skirt that I absolutely adore!)
•people think I’m funny but in reality I’m just mean :))
•I don’t take crap from anyone and I will call people out if they do me or my friends wrong (yet I’m still too scared to order my own food)
•I draw a lot and one of my love languages is drawing on people’s hands!
•I am a huge bookworm too and I’m currently reading the acotar series!
•I’m pretty introverted, but I will take charge and be “extroverted” when needed (for some reason teachers always assigned me as a leader-)
•I have a resting bitch face and I always look pissed (I promise I’m not, I’m just not making an effort to look friendly!)
I hope that was enough information for you!!
~Angel <3
HI HUN!! I SAW YOUR LIKES !! YOU ARE A SWEETIE!
I’ve decided to match you up with …. ALASTOR!
Tumblr media
He’d probably still tower over you- but he’s definitely impressed by your height.
He would LOVE your animal bone collection. Probably for different reasons- but he’d definitely be intrigued by it and want to learn more!!
He would LOVE the victorian style. (So do I.) he’d probably introduce you to Rosie cause of it too. It caused you to become best friends with her!! You both totally gossip about him.
I think he’d like it if you were mean. He doesn’t really laugh much, unless they are dad jokes. And… hah… so funny… old ass..
He loves that you can stand up for yourself. Although he LOVES to kill- he probably would feel like its a burden to do. Similarly to Mimzy.
Since Alastor isn’t huge on physical touch, I honestly think he’d be okay with it. I also think he wears gloves though, so he might hide them. But he might not if it makes you happy!
Honestly I see Alastor as a huge bookworm too. I think he’d love more horror-y graphic stories though. Probably shit about dismemberment.
I think he’d also prefer someone introverted. Someone who can keep to themselves. Although he loves charlie- that is also partly because she is lucifers daughter after all. I think for romantic stuff he’d like someone more quiet.
I think he’d also like someone with an rbf!! It shows people that they wont mess with you, and then they’ll have to deal with him.
~~~~
THIS WAS ENOUGH LOVE!!
Your Heart on a Platter- Prologue (Eris x reader)
Summary: The only way to seek your revenge is to return the heir of Autumn's heart back to a witch in two months time. However, this task proves much more difficult than you presume it to be.
Word Count: 2k
A/N: Hello everyone! This is my first ever series, and I'm so excited to write it! I'm excited to finally bring this idea to life, and I hope you all enjoy it as well. This won't follow the exact events of the ACOTAR timeline as I'm putting my own spin on things, but it is set before the first war. This part is also only exposition, so no romance yet I'm sorry! Part 1 will be out very very soon! I know some things will be a bit cryptic but pieces will come together as the story progresses I promise!
Prologue, Part 1, Part 2
Tumblr media
Of all the seasonal courts in Pyrthian, you think the Autumn Court might just be your favorite. It wasn’t too cold or hot like Winter or Summer and didn’t have the stifling energy that the Spring Court always seemed to exude. Instead, Autumn was calm, almost peaceful, and the wind felt like a cold kiss against your skin as your ship docked in the port. You had a lot of work to do in Autumn, but you suppose you could enjoy the scenery first. Guiding yourself off the ship, you pulled the hood of your cloak over your head as you headed into the busy streets of the small trading village you had anchored in. With the Autumnal Equinox tomorrow in two months,  the court was preparing for a month-long celebration, including small carnivals, feasts, dances, and plenty of balls hosted by the High Lord of Autumn himself.
Beron Vanserra was a piece of work, but at least his court knew how to throw a good party.
 You were moving unseen between the market stalls, swiping an apple and a piece of cheese from a stall or two, and watching all the nobility of the court waltzing around, looking at the finer stalls that offered books and jewelry. You had one destination in mind and had to find one witch by the night's end. You could hear the Suriel’s voice scratching in the back of your mind over and over, your meeting replaying in your mind.
“Hello, Twilight Princess, or should I say wild thing? I think I prefer wild thing…it seems to fit you better.” the monster’s voice scraped out; you swear it felt like your heart wanted to beat out of your ribcage.
“Hello,” you greet with a slight nod, keeping a safe distance away, never letting your bow and arrow stray from your captive. The monster seemed to smile at you, a chill settling into your bones.
“I know what you wish to ask me, child, and I fear you will not like the answer,” the Suriel seems relaxed–even with you aiming an arrow at its chest. “Ask me your question, and I shall give you your answer.” The monster tips its head at you.
“How do I get back in? How do I break the wards?” You move closer, the answer finally in your grasp after all this time. You can practically feel the rush of victory flooding your veins.
“A royal carriage is passing through a small town in Autumn in 2 weeks. It is carrying a servant. You need to become its passenger. But before that, you must talk to a witch…she will give you what you need.”
“And how do I find this witch?” you press further. You’re not in the mood for a goose chase through the whole Autumn Court. You were hoping the Suriel would just give you the answer themselves. The monster, at least, seems amused at your frustration.
“You must look in a place hidden from untrained eyes; you will find your witch there. An old woman with the antlers of a deer.” The Suriel nods again, seeming satisfied with their answer. “That is all I can say.”
You try not to let your frustration show, but if this was all the monster had to tell you, you had to take what you were given. You were already formulating a new plan. You had new information you told yourself you could work with this. So, you lay an expensive royal blue cloak in the grass and back away from the monster.
“Thank you,” you mutter as you redirect your arrow to shoot the snare loose around the creature's ankle. The Suriel rushes to the cloak as you retreat into the woods–seemingly pleased with the quality and color.
“Your welcome, wild thing,” it drawls at your back, “I’ll see you again soon.”
It took a lot of time, but you figured out the carriage easily. A new servant was being brought to the palace for Beron’s eldest son. Getting yourself in that carriage was easy; locating the witch was significantly more challenging. Places hidden to untrained eyes were relatively easy to come by in Autumn. There was practically a foxhole in every corner. You had to hang around a lot of shady places and ask a lot of questions about an old witch with deer antlers who could break wards. You also got many strange looks during this endeavor.
You tracked her down to a tavern hidden in the woods, glamoured away from any royal guards or any with intentions to reveal its location to someone who should not find it. The carriage was passing through tomorrow, you didn’t have much time, so you had to hope this old witch would be here tonight.
The tavern was lively, with loud music and plenty of drunken patrons singing and dancing. All of them are hiding from one thing other- guards, an enemy, or themselves. You ordered two pints of their strongest beer, sat at a table in the back, and waited.
Hours Passed
You began to pick at the skin around your fingernails. If this witch didn’t show up soon, your window would close. That carriage was coming through in seven hours, and you had until then to figure out how the hell this witch was supposed to help you.
You could see her then–the witch you were looking for, wrinkled tan skin and two tall deer antlers curling out from the top of her forehead. You couldn’t even imagine how old she was based on how fae aged. She sat down across from you and picked up the pint you had set at the seat across from you, reaching out one wrinkled arm.
“I heard somebody was looking for me…” the old witch drawled at you, sipping the beer. “You paid for the expensive pint too,” she says, nodding at the glass, “So you must really want something.”
“I need to know how to break a powerful ward. It was warded against my blood, bones, and soul. I’ve tried everything I know, and it won’t break.” It’s true, you had spent months in the day court trying to find someone who could help you, but no one was familiar with this type of magic. Every book about it had burned from history a long, long time ago. “It’s ancient magic.”
“I know the wards you speak of, girl,” the witch smiles at you, and you can’t help but notice that her teeth resemble fangs, “I remember the place this magic came from.” She’s looking at you like she can see into your soul.
You’re not entirely convinced she can’t
“Will you help me?” You ask. You definitely do not have time to sit here all night.
“I will help you,” she whispers, “for a price.” Well, you were expecting that. “There’s something I need you to do for this spell to work, and if you can do that, then we’ll discuss payment.”
You lean forward on the table, “Anything,” you promise. “I’ll do anything.” the old witch smiles at you again, laying forth her proposition.
“On the night of the Autumnal Equinox, you need to bring me the heart of a firstborn Heir, and if you succeed, I will meet you back here at this time, the night after the Equinox. You have two months.” You suppose that explains why you needed the carriage. “You need the heir to trust you by the time you bring the heart to me, and the heir must know you and your soul for the spell to work.”
You took a moment to consider. If you did this, you would be a fugitive in the entirety of Pyrthian. After a few minutes, you’ve made your choice.
“Deal,” you nod at the witch as you take a sip out of your own pint. “Two months.” The witch gets up to take her leave, disappearing into the crowd and leaving you alone at the table. You don’t give yourself time to process. You need to sleep and prepare for the carriage tomorrow. Draining the rest of your pint, you leave to the inn off the side of the bar to get some sleep.
The following day you changed in the small room of the inn you were staying in. You had acquired a simple dress and apron to make you look the part of a demure female servant you were supposed to be playing. You weren’t too worried about being able to hold a glamour on your appearance. The palace was bringing in tons of extra servants and guards for the upcoming months of festivities, so you seriously doubt anyone will be paying close attention to your appearance. You make your way into the small bathroom off your room to try to scrub all of the grime out from under your nails and make yourself presentable. Soon the girl who looks back at you in the mirror looks nothing like the feral thing you’ve become from your time in exile.
You decide that's for the better.
Before you set off, you flip the skirt up your thighs to secure a holster holding a dagger and three smaller knives. You wrap the cloak around your shoulders and leave the inn, setting off in a spot to wait and track the carriage.
About an hour later, you see the royal carriage rolling down the road and begin to track the carriage through the woods silently. At least the little magic you could still tap into allowed you to keep your silent movement. Eventually, the carriage stops to let the horses have a break, and you see a small girl step out of the carriage and presumably go to have a moment of privacy to relieve herself. You follow her to a small clearing far enough away from the guards. Covering her mouth with your hand, you sneak up behind her, pressing the dagger to her throat.
“Don’t scream,” you mutter into her ear, “I really don’t want to slit your throat right now, so do not scream.” You can feel the girl's tears running down her cheek and her whole body trembling. She nods against your hand aggressively, “I’m going to take my hand off now, and if you try to make a sound, I will kill you.” She nods again, and you remove your hand as she spins around to look at you.
“P-please…don’t kill me.” She’s a pretty high-fae girl, you suppose. Probably from the same port town you passed when you sailed into Autumn.
“I won’t kill you as long as you don’t give me a reason to.” The girl nods again, tears streaming down her face. “What’s your name, you ask her?”
“Soph-Sophie,” she manages to stutter out, and you nod, accepting her answer.
“Okay, Sophie, here’s what’s going to happen. You are going to say that you got unexpectedly and violently ill in the woods and that the carriage must make a detour to the small town ahead to retrieve your cousin to go in your place. I will be waiting in the Honeycomb Inn. That is where you will tell them to pick me up ” She nods again, still crying; it's beginning to annoy you. “Say you apologize to the High Lord and his family, but you have a replacement.”
“I understand,” she manages. You gesture back towards the guards with your dagger. She moves quickly, and from your listening, the guards seem to understand as they help her back into the carriage. You track the carriage until it reaches the town as directed, and you greet your “poor, ill cousin” when she shows up. After you get into the carriage, you breathe a sigh of relief. One of the most complex parts of this plan was over, and now all you had to do was wait until you arrived at the High Lord’s estate in Autumn.
came back to tumblr just to find that @worldsnotsaid is gone? girl whyyy☹️
Hi anon!
It was kind of abrupt, and I do apologize for that -- truly. It's why I am tackling this ask! But, it was very freeing to delete that blog, and it felt as if a weight had truly been lifted from my chest to see it go. Bittersweet, yes! But absolutely needed. Constantly seeing asks box jump from 300 to 400+, the constant hate messages, the inboxes -- it was all too much for me to tackle, and honestly, it felt as if my blog was just no longer productive at that point.
I am always 100% behind the points made on that blog, and the problems in SJM's writing. My passion for those points will never fade or change for that matter. But I think the book community and publishing are just not ready for an actual change -- and it's tough to have the conversation about racial and abusive themes in books when people pick and choose when to chastise and ignore. It's literally like having a conversation with a wall. I can't honestly have a conversation about tackling racism in the book industry when people can't even let go of a book series that isn't even well written. We aren't being militant about the problems in the book industry, and its exactly why it looks the way it does. I don't know, I think I've grown apathetic to it. The urge for docility among reviewers disguised as 'allyship,' the flip-flop about abuse and abusive themes in books. None of it makes sense. And it's like the legwork to make it happen just doesn't seem worth having someone constantly throw vitriol in your face. It just seemed like it becomes a tit-for-tat straw-man debate in the end, and that -- again -- isn't productive. 'Tamlin stans this' and 'Nesta stans that, and it was like ?? Can we just think outside of that? We can't complain about the way PoC are always treated in the story and then turn around and defend an author who would 100% kill them off and let her white character wear their trauma like a second skin. Like how serious are these conversations when the ones having them are unwilling to stop supporting the author propagating these harmful tropes to other authors. FBAA ran because ACOTAR walked; ACOTAR ran because Twilight walked. These harmful stereotypes in these books melded and made the environment we have today. And it is what is.
As another blog asked, I will not be returning to that blog as it was deleted. But there are so many beautiful and articulate antis in the tag that adeptly explain the problems in this series and in much clearer and more concise ways! My blog was a rambling mess anyways!
Funny addition: And do you know the sheer frustration of typing up an entire post that's 2000+ with links and citations talking seriously about abuse and racism and how its portrayed in the media just for someone to skim the post and make a follow-up, sub-post that starts with: 'Tamlin stans always think.' -- yeah never again.
Powerless - ★★★☆☆ (SPOILERS)
Rating - 3.25
Overview - Set in a world where the magic system allows for a variety of powers, the story follows a human girl Paedyn. Although Paedyn is able to pretend having psychic powers, she is in truth powerless and displays no magical qualities. Paedyn has lost her family and spent years living in the city's slums where she has become a thief to make a living. Through a run in with a crown prince and saving him from a fight, Paedyn gets selected to take part in that year's tournament where she goes against others who have strong magical abilities.
Tumblr media
Plot - The world itself is quite interesting and reminded me of Sanderson's Mistborn - we get quite an extensive list of powers that are available and some of these are considered more elite than others. The plot itself moves along quite quickly and did not drag, although I found some of the worldbuilding lacking logic and a clear explanation.
Even though quick paced, the plot did feel like a rehash of some popular books in the genre - the tournament felt awfully close to Hunger Games, especially with its set up of the tournament contestants being a mix between those who joined it willingly and those who were plucked against their will. I never truly understand the purpose and the goal of the tournament and felt like Roberts should have spent more time explaining what the costentants were ultimately fighting for.
Otherwise the plot is driven a lot by the enemies to lover romance between Paedyn and the crown prince Kai. It was a slow burn, and a partially attempted love triangle with Kai's brother thrown in the mix. Now, I do love a good enemies to lovers trope just as much as any other romantasy girlie, but this did often feel like a library of tropes. At times I felt like the plot was moving in a certain direction just so that Roberts could use some of the most famous tropes, some of those being: - Knife to throat - Jealous love interest gets drunk - Who did this to you? - Love interest is injured and is tended to - Training scene gets saucy - Stay with me this night (but nothing really happens)
Characters - Paedyn was a pretty solid FMC in this context, although I found her love for her friend from the slums to be unbelievable - for all of Paedyn's claiming of how she lover her friend, she seemed to remember her barely... ever. Some of the finale of the book therefore felt a lot less emotionally impactful to me.
Kai is an attempted morally grey MMC, but to me his ''grey'' part was settled too quickly and I never believed him to be a villain. I think this was an attemped Rhys (ACOTAR) / Cardan (Cruel Prince) / Jacks (Once Upon a Broken Heart), but the attempt fell flat to me.
Some of the background characters seem to have little explanation for their darker ways and felt quite one dimensional, especially the main female ''villain'' who seemed to hold a lot of grudges that I felt were never really explained.
What I liked most - Even with its overuse of romantasy tropes, I enjoyed the banter and interactions between Paedyn and Kai and enjoyed scenes with them on the page the most. It was a fun palette cleanser between some heavier reads. The twist at the end provides for a good setup for a sequel and I am going to read it to see where the story progresses.
What I hated most - The overuse of tropes and scenes that were more than just inspired by other series but rather rewrites of them. The writing could also use some improvements and felt quite juvenile at points. Would love to see more solid worldbuilding and less one dimensional characters in the future instalment.
cc3 anon
spoilers below cut
CC Anon! (I’m so sorry if you’re sick of me)
I said they can regrow limbs because Baxian ate Ruhn’s hand off in prison and Ruhn was fine once the Gorsian shackles didn’t stop his regenerative healing. Just like how the wings just grow back if you cut them which I thought was so stupid when Micah cut Hunt’s wings off in CC1. No one has any real handicaps in this series beyond their own ineptness.
Yeah I remember that happening and knew that Hunt could regrow his wings but I didn't realize or remember that apparently anyone can do it lol. oh yeah for sure i love how they had hidden powers too and everything just literally seems to happen out of convenience for them lol. no one is putting in any real work.
The antidote was too easy. The parasite bit was so stupid. I’m actually surprised there was barely any mention about synth after CC1. I figured maybe they’d try to manufacture it properly to give the humans abilities if they wanted to fight. I’m pretty sure they said it was being sold on the streets so maybe that comes back for book 4 idk!
LITERALLY IT TOOK LESS THAN 24 HOURS TO FIND THE CURE COME ON. why even have it as a plot line if its so easy to fix...smh like there's no element of surprise for ANYTHING anymore. not even the mc deaths because it happens in every damn book. the only reason she brought amren back to life i swear is because at that moment she was like oh i should interconnect these series.
The Viper Queen upset me so much because she can’t dress! Every jumpsuit worse than the last! WHY WAS SHE ONLY WEARING JUICY COUTURE SWEATSUITS AND HIGH HEELED SNEAKERS I DIED
YES five different bonus scenes for different editions?? I hope no one actually bought all the editions to read them :/ They’ve already posted them here 😭. And in their bonus scene, ONE MONTH after the war, Ruhn and Lidia get married 😶
I saw videos of people buying them and it made me a lil sick lol. like thats fucking over $100? That's insane to me. Literally Ruhn and Lidia did not fuck around they said we're moving in and getting hitched. wouldn't be surprised if she's pregnant in the next book lol.
I wonder if the fourth book would mostly be about rebuilding and any political conflict from after the war. I hope she wouldn’t try to introduce another supernatural villain to stretch out the series. Watching TOG become a 7 book series in real-time and whatever ACOTAR has become, I’m confident in her ability to extend a series whether it needs it or not.
I honestly can't see it being about rebuilding and politics unless it was another characters pov because bryce made it clear that she doesn't want to be in charge? which i find selfish that she became queen and immediately shut down all fae politics and then basically is like figure it out yourself i want nothing to do with it lol? like what? take some fucking responsibility for once girl. i was thinking it could be more tharion based because of the end. i'd actually like to see him an sathia get together i think they would be a good couple.
Like they literally shot Sabine’s face off and she was fine after a little bit of first light 😭😭
Actually so dumb...no one has the ability to die here i guess, even with the parasite. smh
ACOTAR was the best of the entire series, ACOSF just murdered everyone not named Nesta Archeron (even her a bit too), and honestly at the rate the fandom's going at I might just pretend nothing happened after ACOTAR. I, like most of the fandom, became a Feysand shipper when ACOMAF came out, and after ACOSF I still ship them but Sarah had better include a scene where Rhys apologizes for *checks notes* so many things, actually, or that ever-expanding part of me that hates Feysand is going to win and I'm going to become a Feyre x no one because all the men have had a ton of flaws shipper.
Okay rant over lol this is just one of the few blogs that dares to think that *gasp* Feysand has its flaws, despite being arguably her most popular ship (besides Rowaelin).
*waves awkwardly from the isle of Feylin*
Listen I abandoned canon when ACOSF came out because there's no amount of backpedaling that could make up for Feyre almost DYING IN CHILDBIRTH no matter what Sarah tries to spin (to me, at least) so I definitely get how you're feeling. The hypocrisy in this fandom is wilddddddddddd
And frankly, at this point, I agree in that I don't see much of a point in continuing beyond book one. Most of the fandom skips book 1, loves books 2 and 3, and dislikes (not all, but many of them dislike) books 3.5 and 4 and I've seen a lot of people say not to read them. I feel like the fandom narrative being "only read and accept the middle two books as gospel and ignore the first one and final two" is going to make it incredibly difficult for new readers, who may just skip entirely or only read the first book honestly.
If you ever jump ship you definitely won't be alone :) Join us in book one land! We have sassy Lucien, actually fascinating worldbuilding, and Feylin!
I enjoyed the ACOTAR books when I read them and love a lot of the characters but I definitely see where people are coming from with their criticisms.
I would say TOG is better though it comes with its own set of problems. And I was kind of enjoying the CC series until the ACOTAR crossover.
I think the main difference, for me anyway, is that TOG and CC felt like they had a lot more meaningful sacrifices. SJM wasn’t afraid of killing off characters.
But who died in ACOTAR? Feyre’s unnamed mother, Clare Beddor, and two unnamed fae. And in ACOMAF? A few unnamed citizens in Velaris, and a mortal queen.
And ACOWAR is perhaps the worst offender with thousands of unnamed civilians and soldiers of Prythian, the bone carver and the weaver who were literally introduced as antagonists, Brennan and Dagda who were also antagonists, three unnamed children of the blessed, Feyre’s unnamed father, the King of Hybern (is he unnamed or is his name literally Hybern?), and the Suriel (the only death that elicited any sort of emotional response from me).
[I’m on a train and don’t have my books to refer back to so forgive me if I got any names wrong, mixed up the books, or missed a death or two.]
Compare this to losing characters like Sam, Nehemia, Gavriel, the thirteen, even Ren (especially Ren) the impact just isn’t the same. And of course a lot of unnamed soldiers and civilians died too, so it just makes sense that with all the battles and bloodshed in all of SJM’s series that we would lose a main character or two, but in ACOTAR we didn’t. Also there’s characters that were already dead before the events of the prequel took place, specifically Aelin’s parents, that we still kind of feel a sense of loss over just because it affects some of the main characters so much and the events of the series as a whole so much.
And in CC there’s Danika, Connor and the rest of their pack, Lehabah, even Hunt’s friends Justinian and Victoria. I don’t recall any deaths in the second one except Cormac and Sophie but that’s where I lost hope for the series anyway, with the ACOTAR crossover.
But I would say my least favourite thing SJM does is try to convince me that her characters “sacrificed” their mortality. Aelin, Feyre, Nesta, Elain, Bryce. I understand that they didn’t necessarily want to be fae but I don’t think becoming one is much of a sacrifice because they were written as so ridiculously superior to humans in every way.
And Amren’s sacrifice could have been a beautifully heartbreaking moment in ACOWAR but was ruined by immediately bringing her back to life. And it also kind of ruined how Feysand came full circle, from Rhys convincing the High Lords to revive Feyre in book one to Feyre doing the same for Rhys in book three, to have another character also come back to life, it just felt overdone. (And of course Feyre died again in ACOSF and so did Nyx but I’m not going anywhere near that god awful book, it was so disappointing). I don’t think SJM even knows what to do with Amren’s character anymore, like oh god you’re slightly less immortal you’ve sacrificed so much for us 🙄.
So yeah, ultimately for me it comes down to how much a book can make me feel something, and TOG achieved this far better than ACOTAR ever could. But even with all that said I still like ACOTAR, I just think TOG is better in terms of what I want from a book.
I have GOBBLED UP duskofdreams’ omegaverse fic like none other. I am patiently waiting for the day I can read it in its entirety as well! She’s such a good writer 🤩🤩 (and tbh, one of my inspirations as well! I love all the azris they write.)
Ooo! Learning to fly! We have so much in common?? Queer… and apparently wanting to fly! My dad has his pilot’s license and I wanted to learn to fly planes as well! I even for a little bit there, considered piloting as a career.
Oh my GOODNESS. HOW DARE THE KITTY BE SO CUTE. Not allowed. Too cute. Banned. 🥺🥺🥺 I love The Cleo it’s official. Also, do you play an instrument? I see the music… in alto clef? So perhaps viola?
Also, I have a random question… if you had to choose something physical (ex. alcohol, cigarettes, opioids which we can pretend exists in acotar) for Azriel/Eris to go to when they’re feeling anxious or just any bad emotion… what would you choose for them each? (<- write down your answer before you read below! I don’t want to influence the answer)
I personally have Az down for alcohol and Eris down for cigars (because they seem more Autumn-coded), but I’m curious! I haven’t written much of the fic yet so it can be changed.
Get-To-Know-You Question: What is your ultimate favorite book or book series? Why?
Its so fucking good, right!
Somehow flying is less stressful to me than driving, but I’ve never had to land/take off
The Cleo is baby and I miss her when I’m not visiting my mother. I was a viola player but i haven’t played in 2 years now and I was never any good
Regarding your question, sorry this is gonna be long so I put it under the cut:
I think that they’re both men who want control and feel at their worst when they don’t have it and most substances go against that.
In my mind, Azriel is someone who sees drinking as a social activity to do with friends. As in, only gets drunk in positive situations. Same with weed. I know the IC all smoke it, I know it!
Maybe he had a psychedelics or cocaine phase when he was younger (& Prythian wasn’t in danger for once)? Azriel as a smoker would be hot af though and there’d be an Azris connection. So I’ll go with that.
Eris would be a wine snob and maybe might take an opioid or something to sleep after a torture session but he’d see an addiction as a weakness and getting drunk as uncouth. After becoming high lord (and azris can happen openly) he might relax a little and start a bad habit of drinking shitty alcohol when sad.
Actually I’ve know decided that the Autumn court only uses vapes bc that’s hilarious to me
the Wolf by Wolf series by Ryan Graudin is my favourite of all time. I used to run an incorrect quotes blog for it (which means I can tell exactly when some one reads it bc I get a bunch of notes from one person outta nowhere)
What’s yours?
2023 book breakdown (first half)
~most of these, I listened to as audiobooks. But this is just a list of all the books I experienced this year, chronologically~
January ++
Nemesis Games (the expanse 5) - impact: 8/10
another solid entry in the expanse series, which has become a pretty comforting *go-to* for me at this point. There are a lot of things in these books that bug me, but their suspense and wit keeps managing to cover for their flaws. I have no doubt that further entries in this series will be simultaneously annoying and enjoyable, in the same way that this was.
February ++
A Court of Thorns and Roses (acotar 1) - impact: 3/10
I’m reading this series only because some podcasters I like started doing a podcast series analyzing it. While those podcasters (and one of my friends) really loved it, I unfortunately hated it. I can appreciate what they found good about these books, but I found the author’s inane descriptors and frequent misuse of words to be too distracting to overlook. Not only that, but I found a lot of the conflict to be rather trite.
March ++
The Count of Monte Cristo - impact 10/10...
several friends recommended this to me, one even going as far as to gift me their old copy before moving away. Unfortunately, I then slept on it for years, before finally picking it up. Holy shit though, am I glad that I finally picked it up. It may be correct to call it my favorite book of all time. This goes so far beyond being a simple revenge story. In fact, nothing in this book is simple, and I really feel like it manages to touch upon nearly every conviction that can exist within the human mind. While some of the narrative is archaic, that is only natural, since this book is nearly 200 years old. But despite being that old, there are some things in this story that still feel wildly progressive, even by today’s standards. Additionally, I feel that an understanding of the past, and the evolution of our culture, is important to understanding progress today. So I swear to you, this is a true masterpiece, and I hope that I can encourage other people to read it too, because it probably deserves to live on in our collective minds for at least 200 years more.
April ++
A Court of Mist and Fury (acotar 2) - impact: 2/10
as described in my blurb about the first book, I didn’t really like this series. I was having fun with the discussions about it, but holy shit it is waaaay too long, and I honestly feel like as much as I’ve heard that people can read into it as ‘empowering’, I really just found it to be insulting and trite. I felt like the language that the author uses to describe characters and relationships reinforces gendered hegemony, and their narrative doesn’t do many favors to class or social struggles either. I think I’d categorize it as a kind of wish fulfillment fantasy, but even then it’s way too long and the author’s constant misuse (or meaningless use) of words just left me feeling frustrated and offended.
Everyone on the Moon Is Essential Personnel - impact: 9/10
this book is one of the best collections of short stories that I’ve ever come across. Jarboe’s writing is thoughtful and to the point, usually utilizing clever metaphors for queer experiences. What really impressed me is how quickly I was able to understand every character and feel a personal connection to them. I could write a lot more about it, but reading this felt freeing and inspiring, in quite a unique way.
In The Watchful City - impact: 5/10
I was interested in the premise of this book, and its use of neopronouns, but I was left feeling a little underwhelmed. I liked the author’s ambition, but I feel like it failed in communicating its setting, as well as the main character’s motivations and feelings. Really, I see it as an interesting collection of ideas, but with none of them fully explored.
May ++
I did not finish a book in May :(
(only manga :3) (p.s. I love chainsaw man)
June++
Babylon’s Ashes (the expanse 6) - impact: 8/10
another wonderful entry in the expanse series. Way more gay representation in this one too. I feel like it brought less new ideas to the table, but it instead focused on re-examining earlier themes and really rounding out the best characters from earlier books. In fact, almost every important character makes a return here, without it ever feeling contrived... which I believe is a magnificent achievement. I’m counting this as my second favorite Expanse book, up until this point.
Leech - impact: 10/10...
a book so perfect, I'd almost believe it was written just for me. The basic plot is that (stay with me here) a brain parasite hivemind goes to a spooky castle to investigate the murder of one of its host bodies, only to discover that the death might have been caused by a *different* brain parasite hivemind. The story is gruesome and terrifying, and supported by worldbuilding that is so creative and poignant that I wanted to live in it forever. The author’s writing is also beautiful and precise, and as I said before, it really just delivered on every front.
ok so i finished all the ACOTAR books yesterday and i slept on it so that a proper thought would come out of my head
!!!!!THIS CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!!
read at your own risk
I don't think there's need saying it, but I will say it anyway: this is my opinion, if you have a different one and you want to share it with me please be kind and mindful and blah blah blah you know how it is, just be decent people pls
1. ACOTAR : ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
the first one is nice. it sets the scene very well. i’m not particularly fond of first person POV as i see it as an incredible limitation, especially with books with such a great ensemble (more on that later) but in the first book the first person POV fits like a glove. The intention of retelling the story of Beauty and the Beast is clear from the beginning and SJM does not shy from it as its her very intent. About the characters, Feyre is clearly represented as the “underdog” of the family (with reason) and the one who sacrifices herself for her whole family. She has a sharp tongue and she isn’t afraid to use it other than having hunting skills and a quiet persistent resilience which is what distinguishes her more than anything. Tamlin and Lucian… Tamlin I liked for a bit but I got bored pretty quickly, as after some revelations of its past it seemed kind of monotonous; Lucian on the other hand at least offered some kind of banter and as a character it felt much more interesting, especially intriguing me on his backstory. However the most important part of this book for me was the world SJM created: enticing, full of creatures different from the typical werewolf/vampire of other fantasy books and is what for me did half the job in this book ( and maybe of the entire series ).
As a general vote for me is 3/5. Seems like classic storytelling but with nice twists and turns especially towards the end.
2. ACOMAF: ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
In this book, surprise surprise, we have a switch. Tamlin, that before represented all that was good and true is now a bastard, while Rhysand appears like a crowned saint. Now. Let me explain before you start bellowing. I despise Tamlin. What he did to Feyre… I understand the need to kill him, I do, I would have done it myself, but, there’s a but, this switch seems a little too forced. In the sense that the author realised she had limited time, had to move things along therefore said “ok let’s make him the incarnation of despicable and let’s move on to the next love interest”. Rhysand on the other hand has become all sorts of mushy. It just feels a bit forced. Feyre and Rhysand relationship… cute, you love them in the first 100 pages, then they become kind of repetitive. However the best part in this book is Rhysand declaration, no doubts about it. Also the sex scenes… cringy, that’s all i’m saying.
Secondary characters save the book. The Court of Dreams, yes please, give ten books about them and i’ll read them.
About the plot, it feels like a very transitional book this one. It is much more focused on the romance than on whatever is going on and this is very perceivable by the use literary shortcuts that in a short amount of time give the characters (and the readers) clues on what needs to be done so that we can return to the love story (great example: the Suriel)
All in all, good, not fantastic but still a very pleasurable read. Still 3/5.
3. ACOWAR: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Now we’ve come to play. Finally when i finished this book I was more satisfied. And the reason is simply because SOMETHING FINALLY HAPPENS. Now that we have resolved the all Feysand dilemma we can finally concentrate on what is actually happening around us. More specifically, this war that we’ve heard whispers in the previous book, which we basically ignored because romance, but now we can face it head on. While in the previous book Feyre and Rhysand were still describable as cute, here they become a bit too much, is a continuous string of my mate here and my mate there and he is mine, i’m yours and blah blah, which yes i get it but if you repeated it a bit less, it might have been more enjoyable.
Secondary characters once again save the day: Nesta, Cassian, Amrel, Azriel, Mor, Elain, Lucian, them i like if only because they interrupt the lithany here above.
Also we finally get introduced to other courts and characters!! I loved this part. I said it already and I will repeat it once more, the world building is great, i love the references to mythology, religion and folklore. It is well structured and while not revolutionary, it is very pleasurable to go through and discover.
The truly big issue i had with this book is the first person POV. While it’s bearable in the other two, and it makes sense (i had to force myself to write this part because no, it doesn’t always make sense, but let’s move on) in this one i hated it. And it’s really simple to understand why, i believe. While the previous two books were focused on Feyre and her story and her journey, here we have multiple characters, that sometimes are more important to the story than the who's narrating it, therefore i feel like either in those moment the POV should have shifted or simply she should have written the entire book in a third person POV. Because not only it gives only a facet of what people are doing/going through (Feyre’s perception of it) but also automatically implies that Feyre has to be everywhere and listen to everything, which gets really annoying after a while because all the action is on her. And when this strategy is not possible SJM bypasses the problem by using this mental connection (ex: Rhys showing something to Feyre which otherwise we as readers couldn’t have possibly known).
So, good book, better for me that the previous two because we focus also on something else other than only their romance, but the first person POV is a break dealer for me. 4/5.
3.5. ACOFAS: ⭐️⭐️/5
Short and sweet (read: borderline diabetic). I do not particularly enjoy homely scenes, i’m sorry that's on me. Or better yet I just don’t see the point of having almost 30 chapters about it.
Not very much to say about it. 2/5.
4. ACOSF: ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
I would have given it 5 stars had it been only about the Valkyries (and maybe some Nessian).
When I found out this book was a bout Nesta I was so excited. She was my favourite character from the beginning so I wanted to see what would happen to her and her tension with Cassian which, let's be honest, is the only thing that pushed me to read through all these books.
Let's start we the thing I did not like: Rhys, Feyre, Amren, Elain, in this exact order. What I didn't like about them? Let me tell you. First of all you do not punish someone for being depressed. Especially not if the reason is spending too much money (what?? I thought that Rhysand had coffers to go on for eternity and now you're giving Nesta shit if she spends them?). What I would've appreciated more was if she had a proper intervention, maybe talk with Amren and Elain. Also the fact that Rhys is such an asshole to her... why? I mean your beloved mate wasn't in such different condition when she came out of Tamlin's home, but her you can help because she's bound to you and the others can fuck off? Nope did not like the attitude and behaviour of him AT ALL (including towards Feyre about the pregnancy). Feyre... I don't know she had such a smart mouth and banter when it came to everyone else but when it comes to her sister she looks like a simpering fool, does not find the words and has an hard time dealing with her, treating as if he doesn't know her at all. Yes they didn't like each other and argued all the time but hell girl you lived with the woman for 19 years, surely you must know how to speak to her. Which brings us to the other two. They are the only friends Nesta has aver known and what do they do? Elain ignores any problem that her sister might have, "worrying" but up to a certain point, while Amren just confronts her incredibly harshly and tells her to just fix herself, without offering help or solutions or listening to why Nesta is in this condition. In this book I didn't like the court (except Azriel, but that he's because is barely there, unfortunately might I add). Everyone has a very too much entitled opinion of themselves and the message at the end is that it was only Nesta that had to grovel for their forgiveness and all of them were assumed to be right. Nope didn't like that.
Moving on, now we have Nesta in the House of Wind, with Cassian and sometimes Azriel as... I want to say jailers, but it may seem too harsh so let's go with guardians(?) and the training that she has to do apparently to be once again part of the Court now that they have shunned her. From this point forward the only things that mattered to me were the building friendship between Emerie, Nesta and Gwyn and Cassian and Nesta declaration to each other, that's it.
Now the things I liked. I will repeat it until my last breath: THE VALKYRIES. I loved them and everything about them; their personal stories, their training, their friendship. I had chills and almost cried when I was reading the part of the Blood Rite. I was so happy that Nesta had found people that accepted her for who she was, even before she "changed" and was "forgiven" by the rest of the court. Then, Nessian. My beloved. Them I liked. Sometimes Cassian didn't really thought through what he was saying and I would have liked to hit him in the head really really really hard, but other than that I appreciated them (also can I say, maybe SJM took a course idk, but Nessian sex scenes are ten thousand times better that any other she has written).
So, to sum up, my girl Nesta was done dirty, because once again even when she shows such power it always about someone else (Rhys pales, Amren shivers) but always very little about how she feels when she actually manages to use this mysterious powers, that I must say even after finishing the book I have trouble understating exactly what they entailed (summoning the dread trove... ok I guess, but I think it was more than that and it was explained very little). Also the fact that Nesta sacrificed her powers to save her sister and changing her pelvis (what?????).... I'm... not sure what to think.....
Anyway, I would give it 5 stars only for the scenes in the library when Nesta,Emerie and Gwyn have that sleepover but unfortunately other problems cannot be ignored. 3/5.
Final remarks:
All in all its not a bad series. Obviously it has its big flaws, some of which I explained but I feel that to cover them fully (and what they can imply) one should write a separate book. Generally it has a pleasurable style, easy to read, which helps since each of these books is long almost 2000 pages each. Also maybe a little bit more of inclusivity would have been nice.
General vote: ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
I have finished House of Earth and Blood (Crescent City 1) by Sarah J Maas and it was both the most engaging and enraging book I have read in a long time.
Spoiler-free verdict: If you enjoy gritty, urban fantasy setting with a decent murder mystery and larger conspiracy plot, with some great melding of usual tropes and fantastic plot twists- this is a book rec.
Character-wise and 'ship-wise... ehhh, okay. Sarah J Maas is an interesting author for me - I almost always enjoy her plots, when there is one that isn't being superceded by relationship angst.
I can take or leave most of her romantic ships arcs but I actually usually adore the platonic (sibling, friends, mentors etc) relationships. This book followed that same path - Danika and Bryce's friendship was EVERYTHING, honestly- sooo good, alongside Bryce's relationships with her parents, Ruhn and his friends, and her interactions with Jesibah, Tharion, the Viper Queen, etc. And even her friendship with Hunt, as it was developing into something more.
But somewhere along the way, SJM always seems to fall into the trap of... all male/female romantic relationships must kind of follow A/B/O dynamics or just borderline abusive Dom/sub kink dynamics.
It was less evident in this book than in ACOTAR series but there's still that gender essentialism that creeps in where, once it turns romantic, the man (sorry- in SJM parlance, the male 🙄) must turn into a possessive asshole who only thinks with his cock. And while I can accept that might happen with some of her characters as it seems to be coded into some of the fantasy races societies (ie. Fae), it also tends to rear its head in other characters where imo, it really doesn't make sense.
And it then bleeds into other characterisation and becomes a problem.
Spoilers:
I wanted to like Hunt more than I did. An angel who fell for love and a desire to change things for the better? Who has had 200 years of slavery to consider how he could take his revenge and what he'd do differently? Why then... was he so bland? *cries* Okay, I get traumatic woobieness (and I appreciated that was addressed and I did adore Bryce taking care of him in that one scene and all that...) but I still feel like there should be a ruthlessness and zealotry running through his core. He's a fallen angel so I want to see that grey morality!
Especially... when it was revealed that he had decided to lie to Bryce about the synth. I was so happy to see that twist and I was like YES, GIVE ME THAT RUTHLESSNESS AND GIVE NO FUCKS... and then, it all just fell a bit flat? Argh, I don't know how to entirely describe it except that he felt quite generic love interest™️ and limited personal development in his own character arc.
But that might be because SJM reverts to a lot of tropes (scents her arousal, purrs/snarls, gets overly angry protective over love interest) when she starts her romance arcs.
Maybe I'll enjoy Hunt a bit more now with his slave halo off- and as it seems like maybe the next book we'll actually deal more with the arc-angels.
Bryce suffered a bit from super specialness by the end too but honestly, I thought the reveals about her being another Starborn heir was earned - and intertwined enough with her trauma and history with Danika and foreshadowed enough throughout the book that it felt natural for her to save the city and close the gates with that power.
(that being said- SJM, stop cribbing from the Black Jewels Trilogy lol- the Drop being pretty much the same as when witches descend from their birthright jewel to their adult one)
Last things to mention... it was a kind of slow start but damn- those last two hundred/one hundred pages of the story? Whew- when the city was actually saved it was such a cathartic moment and I actually shed a tear and I did not expect that.
Anyway, overall- solid effort and I'm looking forward to the next book- I guess I'll just suffer through the tropey bs that seems to be SJM's jam.
Tagging @belle-keys because your rec was enough for me to decide to take a look at it.
I love the high lady theory too anon!! 🙋‍♀️
I think it’s gonna happen! let them hate it won’t change anything if it does happen anyway, just like them hating now and trying to “erase” them won’t change the fact that they’re still the core and face of the entire series and most well known characters with the most books out of all of the characters and the authors favorite. I think miss sarah has made confusing writing choices before but I don’t think she’d be as random as to have anyone else become high queen and king. As you said no one else has shown an ounce of interest in leading, they’re only all saying that they want their favorite characters as high king and queen either because they don’t like feyre for whatever i’m sure petty reason or because they just want their fav to have the spotlight and get that title instead and for feysand to be in the backround so their characters “can shine” even if it doesn’t make sense to the characters. We don’t want them taking over the story but it does make sense for them both and the story, especially if sarah decides to expands on feyre’s powers in order to help against the asteri, but we can only hope for that one, we haven’t seen feyre use her power since acowar and even then she got winded for some odd reason? And we have to hope that she releases feyre and rhysand from that bargain so they can fight without worrying about them both dying on nyx. So while I do think they’ll become high king and queen if she writes that sort of arc, i’m hoping she gets rid of that bargain and expands on her powers so it doesn’t hold them back conveniently.
People say that throne of glass characters can supposedly use more of their power than acotar characters can because of drawing the power from the “wyrd gates” and that prythian universe doesn’t have that well so our characters get worn out faster? Is that true if anyone knows? it reminds me of them getting tired during battle and I was like why did sarah write it that way and put such a limit to their power and supposedly throne of glass characters didn’t have that limit? I wonder if she’ll touch on this. We all know the throne of glass world merge is coming in cc3 since she teased at an avengers moment so much and that she’s not done with that series yet.
This has probably become the theory I anticipate most, if it comes true I’ll be so thrilled 😏 I would live for this. That level of character development for feyre if she became queen would be so top tier. from a poor, neglected, uneducated, self taught huntress feyre to married and mated to the most powerful man with the powers of all courts and now, high queen feyre of the fae. It has a nice ring to it. We have to manifest it 🕯
Hello anon!
Thank you so much for your ask. You are very right my dear anon. It definitely wouldn't make sense for anyone else to take the role as High Queen/King. The only one I could think about, that would make sense character wise, is Mor. BUT she doesn't make sense for me story wise.
About the well: I don't think that makes much sense. Yes, we have that well of power in Tog but that doesn't mean acotar characters are less powerful. Its just not described the same. Remember in Tog and cc we were also introduced to winnowing but in tog and cc it didn't have a name. Just teleporting. I think that's the same with the well of Power. It's there, it's not explained.
And about the weak: not true. They weren't tired fast in acotar. They fought battles for days before. They used their winnowing for strategy. They had already used their powers. And remember when Rhys misted a HUGE amount of Hybern soldiers? That always gets underestimated because we don't get a specific number or a specific time. We got more specifics and explanations and numbers in throne of glass, that's why it seems like tog is more OP.
They will stand the same after a battle. They are all super powerful. There's no more or less.
And I totally agree to the last bit, too. Imagine Feyre going from a lonely human to the most powerful Faerie Queen.
Hey, can I ask you what’s the deal with acotar? The more I hear about it, the less likeable the entire series seems to me, but I’m guessing there was something that originally drew you to it. What is it?
Oh its no worries! A completely fair question
So I originally picked up ACOTAR - the first book - in about 2016, so not too long after the first book was released! I was almost immediately hooked. I love a good Beauty and the Beast retelling, and Feyre was highly unlike a lot of YA protagonists I'd read before - she was harsh, and reckless, but also dutiful, and compassionate. SJM is an extremely readable author, and its super easy to get swept up in her stories emotionally.
Of course, I immediately rushed out to get ACOMAF, and continued being hooked - but I ultimately didn't like it as much as rhe first novel. The magic, so to speak was gone. And I never was a huge fan of that Bad Boy Heart of Gold trope, so I was disappointed that Rhysand had become the endgame love interest.
Mostly I was bored reading ACOWAR. I don't remember it super vividly.
I basically didn't think about the series at ALL, until the last year because honestly, I didn't care very much about the series at that point. I promise that I would not be posting about the series if I did not care about it!
Nesta was one of my favorite characters so I was super happy when I heard that she'd be getting her own novel, as a protagonist. I decided to reread the series - and that's where I started noticing more of the inconsistencies, the really problematic issues with racism and handling abuse and trauma, the poor world building, etc. Moreover I was super offended by the treatment of Nesta in her own book.
But when I reread the series, the stuff I liked was still there, especially in book one!! The characters I liked were still there.
Anyway, that's kind of the summary of my time with ACOTAR. I'm writing fix it fanfiction and making shit up to continue enjoying the world that I initially fell in love with a few years ago lol.
