hc for the vongola kids’ favorite video game genres / titles, pt 1 (nami trio); aiming for late 90s-mid 10s which is the general timeline for the series.

tsuna:

mixed PC and console, mostly console (PS2 or Game Cube). already canon that he likes rhythm games (which is so cute and kinda funny considering how uncoordinated he is), so he’s a big fan of Beatmania IIDX, Pop’n Music, osu!, Taiko no Tatsujin, etc. pretty good at them and they help calm his ADHD down. plays Katamari for similar stimulation reasons with the loud cheerful music and straightforward structure.

tried playing DDR and almost actually died. he avoids any footwork ones in the arcade; playing in public stresses him out in general so he usually will buy or rent games for home. Lambo got a Wii for his birthday and between the two of them, the controllers were lodged in the drywall by the end of the day after playing Wii Sports.

likes the Animal Crossing series because it’s cozy, doesn’t get too serious with in-game achievements but plays regularly. doesn’t time travel; got yelled at by Resetti once when he was younger and shut the game off on accident, he cried so hard he almost threw up. feels bad if he leaves his villagers alone too long. when he didn’t have friends growing up, he’d really look forward to in-game holidays and birthdays (sob). trying to collect the squirrels.

will play Smash with Lambo; that’s what helped them bond when Lambo first moved in. fighting games kinda stress him out so this is the most he’ll really play them. his main is Kirby, or Luigi because nobody picks Luigi. :( low to mid-tier.

also they play Minecraft together and are both pretty terrible at it but have fun. introduced it to Gokudera, Yamamoto, and Ryohei and they’ll play it with Lambo when either (or all) of them are babysitting him. Tsuna’s constantly on the death alert feed, usually dying from falling into lava. somehow slayed the Ender Dragon.

gokudera:

PC gamer trash, uses emulators because he can’t afford a console. loves difficult, convoluted RPGs and RTS (gag). does not like online lobbies. horror and sci-fi fanatic, especially survival-esque games that require puzzle-solving like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Bioshock. is one of those freaks who illegally downloads unsettling, semi-dangerous games (like Lostboy, Sad Satan, LSD: Dream Emulator) and plays them with HyperCam on because he’s convinced he’s going to see a ghost. has had to install like 5 firewalls and rebuild his PC once.

Demon’s Souls / Dark Souls loser. has a freakish knowledge of where everything is, including short-cuts and secrets. he focuses on magic and will discard and replace weapons without much thought. knows lore simply from the item descriptions. really strategic, memorizes enemy move sets, but will go the hard way because it’s fun. utterly deranged. it’s honestly pretty impressive but it kinda scares tsuna because how many hours did you put into this? how did you kill that boss so quickly? where is your armor, gokudera-kun—

he doesn’t like most FPS games because they can trigger his PTSD if they’re too realistic, but killing endless undead/demons/monsters scratches a weird itch for him so he can play DOOM, and L4D w/ his vongola friends eventually (he’s constantly reviving Tsuna). really likes Half Life and Portal because aliens and puzzles alongside bip-bip. will play Hotline Miami w/ Shittopi if only for the god-tier music but has to be really stoned with her, else he gets uncomfy w/ the content being so close to his old hitman lifestyle.

hates platformers with every fiber of his being. says they’re for children but really he’s so impatient he sucks at them. Yamamoto made him play Yoshi’s Island and he almost blacked out from sheer rage. only tolerates Pikmin because, again, aliens and puzzles. will play Smash under duress: mains Samus or Fox, mid-tier, loses to Yamamoto half the time. returns the favor in Mortal Kombat which he’s pretty decent at.

the only one who plays Minecraft outside group sessions. has started building late at night when his insomnia is bad; really likes the soothing music and will leave it on even when he’s not playing. makes replicas of structures from his favorite nerd media (currently working on the Enterprise).

yamamoto:

pure console lad, likes the Genesis, the Dreamcast, and the GameCube; his dad has a few older consoles that he’s also inherited. in similar hand-me-down style and true to canon, he owns a ridiculous number of late 90s/early 00s baseball video games. can play them for hours and gets really serious about them.

a Sonic stan. does enjoy some Mario Kart and Smash with the boys (mains Ness or Link, mid-high tier)—but he was a Sonic kid and really wanted Soap Shoes growing up. likes the OG 8-bit side-scrollers like Sonic Adventure 2 the most but his ADHD clings to super fast, timing-based shit like Sonic Heroes. also enjoys Rayman but gets stuck a lot.

weirdly good at Super Monkey Ball and knows how to short-cut in ways previously unknown to man. will launch himself across the level and win in less than 3 seconds. how? “idk just lucky i guess.” plays Baby.

has a few broken, shitty titles like Dark Castle, Pen Pen Trilcelon, Puyo Pop Fever. will make Gokudera play them just to infuriate him; this also applies to annoying platformers, it’s just funny to watch him rage quit. generally will troll Gokudera in video games to get a rise out of him, like dropping gravel on him or flooding his caves in Minecraft; never enough to actually ruin the game but enough to annoy him.

started playing Hitman as a joke but is spooky good at it despite not playing FPS/stealth games. “hey gokudera did you ever get to dress up as—” “for the last time, NO.” is generally pretty bad at games with a lot of details/strategy (other than baseball) because he starts tuning out. strong-arms Gokudera into tag-teaming hard puzzles and co-op games in general to build teamwork.

A little analysis I wrote about Cohen

One of the most beloved characters by the fans has always been Sander Cohen, the demented, sadistic, artist originating in Fort Frolic, the eighth level of the first game and he is the main and most recognizable example of homosexuality in the BioShock series. He is confirmed to have had several amorous relationships with multiple men throughout Rapture, including but not limited to four out of five of his disciples. Those four are Martin Finnegan, Hector Rodriguez, Kyle Fitzpatrick, and Silas Cobb. Voice lines and audio diaries paint an interesting picture of what Cohen’s relations with these men looked like to a degree, and it isn’t pretty.

Quotes like: "The things that man had me do…” (Hector Rodriguez)

“I used to love you. I used to think you were a musical genius. You know why? Because you paid my rent, you ancient hack!” (Silas Cobb)

"This one's for the fruit!" (Martin Finnegan when attacking)

"Oh Cohen, you sick fuck, let me out of this!" (Kyle Fitzpatrick)

Show each of these former disciples talking about Cohen in a truly disturbing and manipulative light. Kyle calling him sick, Silas saying the only reason he looked up to or respected Sander was because he was the reason he had his rent paid (illustrating an unhealthy power dynamic), Hector outright admitting that Sander had him do things he was not comfortable with. He seems to be still disturbed by them.

Sander Cohen used power over these men, whether that power came from a financial aspect or giving them the ability to pursue their passions he manipulated each one for less-than-savory reasons. On the surface the idea is great. He is a perfect villain for the setting. Rapture is a gritty and power-based society where a lot got swept under the rug if you had the power to make it happen. And especially in Fort Frolic where suggestive music, dancing, performance, and outright erotism are commonplace, you’d expect a level of that to be twisted in the main threat of the level based in said area. But if you look at it from a meta-perspective something about it doesn't sit right with me.

It would make sense for a character like Cohen who is so close to the theater to be queer in some way. Homosexuality and the stage go hand-in-hand and have for years and years, from cross-dressing to flashiness that doesn't fit “masculinity” to challenging ideas through the artistic medium so I’m not shocked or against the fact that Sander Cohen is gay, though I have something against the way it’s treated.

Sander Cohen is the main and only prevalent character in the first game who had many serious examples of sexual manipulation and as laid out, he is one of the only front-and-center characters who is part of the LGBT+ community. That feels like an odd choice to me. I could be overthinking this decision, it could just be an unfortunate mix of characteristics for Cohen that paint Ken Levine’s writing in a bad light but it feels weird to me that the only character whose sexuality is not straight is also the character who most of his crimes and immoral acts involve something sexual.

I’d much appreciate other thoughts, arguments, and points in the replies or re-blogs. Thank you for reading this, it was just a thought that interested me. I do not have anything against BioShock or Ken Levine, I don’t know enough about Levine to claim he is a morally bad person and I’m a massive fan of the BioShock series.

Loved your drabbles so far! :) maybe bt picking up cooper like a hamburger and carrying him around (it's a separation anxiety thing) and him being so used to it he just keeps doing what he was doing before while being held. Or doing the good o'l fastball special when other pilots are around. Knowing pilots, getting yeeted by your titan will be a sport in no time lol

On the topic of fan songs "man and machine" by miracle of sound is one I know of

Oh man I love Miracle of Sound, the Bioshock and Fury Road songs especially are 10/10

Jack’s well on his way to the training grounds when something swoops him up from behind. Normally, most people would panic about something like that, because it doesn’t happen too often.

But Jack is forever bonded with a giant robot who doesn’t like being alone, so he’s used to BT scooping him up at random moments. BT says it’s only when he sees something of concern in the environment, but Jack’s not too convinced. He’s pretty sure that sometimes BT just likes to have something to hold.

Like people who have cats, right? Sometimes you gotta just pick them up to keep them out of trouble. BT thinks that Jack gets into a lot of trouble, too, but Jack strongly disagrees with that. The water balloon incident, and jumping off the roof without asking if BT was here first, and talking back to his commanding officer at the suggestion of leaving his Titan behind, and driving the way he does, and cold-cocking Davis, they were all calculated decisions.

Maybe not calculated well, but calculated all the same. Just because BT’s better at numbers doesn’t mean he’s going to understand human calculations.

Of course, that’s because BT insists that there is no way to understand humans because they’re so illogical, but Jack’s been making headway. He got BT to understand the appeal of video games, even. Or maybe BT just wanted to get out of the illogical conversation and go back to… whatever he does in the hangar, when they don’t have a fight to run to.

“Hey, BT,” he says, aiming for a casual tone. “You wanna put me down, buddy?”

“No, Pilot Cooper.”

“Then can I embark?”

“There is no need. You are perfectly safe where you are.”

He’s also got his legs dangling in the air like he’s a misbehaving small animal of some kind, and he’s pretty sure it’s only so long before there’s a picture circulating around the Pilots’ social networks. He’d like to maintain whatever dignity he can.

“If you drop me, won’t you step on me?” he asks.

“Correct. However, the likelihood of you falling is so slim as to negate any concern.”

Robots and their numbers.

“What if I get slippery or something?”

“Humans do not produce mucus in such quantities.”

“C’mon, BT, throw me a bone, here.”

“I would never throw anything at you. You could be injured.”

Right. The whole protocol about not firing in a Pilot’s direction without targeting systems. Honestly, Jack would have appreciated a blind strafe while he used his jump kit to get into the air, but it was hard to think of any strategies while being shot at. He’s pretty squishy compared to BT.

“You throw me at things, though,” Jack points out. “What’s the difference?”

“Your trajectory is much easier to compute. I am familiar with your shape and mass. An object I have never seen before is a much bigger risk.”

“Aw, you’re looking out for me. That’s so sweet.”

“Protocol 3 requires it.”

BT does have a way of ruining nice moments with his logic. Jack’s not annoyed with him, though. He rarely is.

“Can you throw me at something near the training grounds instead of carrying me the whole way?” It’s a bit of a last-ditch effort, but it beats dangling like a ferret for the rest of the walk. Getting fastballed is a lot of fun, too, and an adrenaline rush just like piloting a Titan.

“This is acceptable,” BT says. He moves his hands together a little bit at a time, giving Jack plenty of room to move to crouch in one of BT’s hands instead of being held between them.

Good thing he’s got his jump kit, because otherwise, BT would never consider this.

“Ready when you are, BT.”

“Calculating. Recalculating. Finalising. Complete.”

And that’s all the warning Jack gets before he’s launched into the air at a bajillion miles an hour. Not the formal, scientific unit, but nothing about this is formal.

“Good job, BT,” he yells from the rooftop, giving a double thumbs up even though BT probably can’t see it at this distance. He’s lucky he had his helmet with him, too, or the wind burn would have been unbelievable.

“Did something just throw Cooper?” he hears below him, and peers over the edge of the roof. He’s three or four times higher than he’d ever go without his jump kit, and he’s kind of surprised anyone can tell who he is from the ground level.

Still, he steps off the edge, letting the stomach-flipping gravity of freefall wash over him for a few too-short seconds before he has to engage the jump kit to avoid splattering on the ground.

“What’s up?” he asks, tucking his helmet under his arm like he does stuff like that every day. Not nearly, but every mission… that’s a closer mark.

“How’d you get up there?” Martinez demands, clearly already trying to figure out a way to get launched herself.

Jack grins, knowing that he’s about to introduce an absolutely bone-breaking form of entertainment to the other knuckleheaded adrenaline junkies that he shares the base with. This can only end in disaster, but he’ll be sure to bring some nice get-well-soon balloons to medbay.

“So when I need to get somewhere fast,” he begins, “BT gives me a hand.”

“Incorrect,” BT says. “I have never given you any of my extremities.”

“Thank you for clarifying,” Jack says, like he always does, even when the clarification is annoying. “And for everyone else!” He grins and claps his hands together. “Let me introduce you to the fastball.”

So, Bioshock’s 15th Anniversary was yesterday. You’ve probably heard some people talking about how 2K celebrated it. It was something…

You’d get a picture of a Big Daddy and Little Sister there, maybe a Rapture fan art, but it would be sandwiched between just mostly Infinite, or, I should say Elizabeth stuff. Elizabeth gets the most attention here. Booker gets maybe, like, one post, but if he appears it’s with her. Luteces surprisingly don’t get a mention at all? Not from what I’ve seen. And I guess to them Daisy just does not exist?

This isn’t even fan art, either. These are literally just screenshots they got from Google Images or the wiki.

Elizabeth is also the only character with a full on appreciation post. Nobody else from 1 or 2 or Infinite even gets one. There’s like one Ryan post where they ask how punchable he is and that’s it for him. There’s, like, one Tenenbaum post. No Fontaine posts, no Jack posts, and really surprisingly no Cohen posts. Nothing.

Where’s, like, the discussion of the characters of 1? Where’s talking about the levels? The lighthouse? Fort Frolic? Like, come on… no Fort Frolic? No Steinman?

Also, like, this isn’t even her most iconic quote either. Way to scrape at the bottom of the barrel here. When I think of the most iconic quotes of the series, I sure think of this one. Not, y’know, Ryan’s speech from the first fifteen minutes of the first game. Or Ryan’s death. Or every scene with Ryan. The villain of the first game.

It’s weird cause I saw a lot of people (including my friends) send in fan art focusing on 1 and 2 or discussed who their favorite characters were from 1 and 2. You know… Bioshock 1? The game whose anniversary this is. Didn’t even get an acknowledgement, that’s really cool. There was, like, maybe two pieces for 2 acknowledged at all. I won’t even say two because the one was just clearly stolen fan art that was ran through a filter or AI.

Also, there’s these thirst posts, some of them on people’s fan art… And then they comment on other people’s thirst posts on Elizabeth?? Would appreciate if you maybe acknowledged the other female characters. Like Tenenbaum? Jasmine? Anna Culpepper? Julie? You know, the ones from the game whose anniversary it is? Or, since you’re doing the entire series apparently, what about Eleanor? Sofia? Grace? Rosalind? Pearl? Hello? Acknowledge your characters who are women of color. Acknowledge how you have one of the only autistic female characters in a major gaming franchise.

I wouldn’t even have a problem with all this Infinite stuff (or, again, this is all Elizabeth) if there was equal acknowledgement of the other two games, especially 1. I’m sorry, is it Infinite’s anniversary? I thought that was 2023? Either just acknowledge 1 or give equal attention to the other games. Hey, maybe recognize the other DLC besides BaS like Minerva’s Den. Recognize the other protagonists, please? The villains? The levels? The bosses? The side-characters?

Anyway, we are doing something on here for 1’s anniversary and 1’s anniversary only because this is ridiculous.

My position is that disregarding Clown's wishes is shitty, but also this is the internet and porn of things that get popular is kind of inevitable. You can mitigate it by politely asking not to, and most will listen. But R34 artists are kind of a stubborn contrarian bunch (especially if they hang around places like 4chan) and telling them no even in the tactful way Clown did would probably just spur them to go "Nyeeeeehhhh fuck you I won't do what you tell me" And what makes it worse is that such a position becomes easier to justify if you're someone who's had to put up with a decade plus of "RULE34 IS BAD!!!!! THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!1!! I DON'T CARE IF YOU TAG IT SO THAT I CAN'T SEE IT JUST BY STUMBLING UPON IT, IF YOU SEXUALIZE MY BLORBO YOU'RE A PEDOPHILE!!!1!!11 BRONIES ARE RAPE APOLOGISTS WHO ARE ALSO PEDOPHILES AND STOLE A LITTLE GIRLS SHOW AWAY FROM THEM BECAUSE MUH SOGGY KNEES!!!! Like I don't think it's *okay*, I'm just saying that this is highly disappointing, but unsurprising.

See, so this is the exact mentality I was thinking about when I answered those first few asks.

Because, you know what? You're right: the internet is the internet and certain people are just going to do whatever the hell they want either way.

However, I'm going to bring up a few portions written by myself and others that kind of lean into my ultimate attitude on situations like this.

'Read more' because this turned into a doozy.

First and foremost, this portion from Absolmon's reblog of one of the earlier posts:

"I also think there’s a world of difference between a small time creator wanting to retain some control of their characters vs a billion dollar corporations character. I remember when JaidenAnimations made an statement saying she was upset by all the porn made of her avatar character, especially with her collaborators and people rushing out to make even more of it. The fact that Jaiden is ace and has a well known history of body image issues just makes it even more skeevy. "

This portion from a conversation I was having with Marquis de Glad:

Marquis - I dunno... Is it any different than all the people who make Rule34 of Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite despite the creator not liking it? Or is that something you dislike as well? Mind you, I know basically nothing about this entire thing other than what you've posted, so it's possible I'm missing some context

Me - Well, I'm of the mindset that 'not liking' =/= 'please don't do this' I'm sure that Hasbro doesn't like all the MLP smut out there, but they never actually said 'please don't create this'. Another example would be how Martin Freeman's wife was talking about how she didn't like all the porn of her husband's characters people made that she kept finding when wanting to show their kids their dad's work... But she never said 'please don't do this'

And then, finally, from an ask I just answered:

"No one wants to think about the creators of their favored IPs anymore. They just want to be given the shiny new ball to treat (or mistreat) in any way they see fit for a while before dumping it to the wayside a month or so later to do it to something else. And if, heaven forbid, you get a creator who dares to want to have some matter of agency with how people engage with their creation, well...

'Why do you hate people having fun?'

'Well, I'm just going to do it anyway.'

'So... Anyway, these characters are now mine because the creator is obviously shitty and doesn't know them as well as I do'"

However, one other thing that I think a lot of people aren't remembering in the conversation around this issue is the notion of boundaries. And not just the boundaries creators are justified in setting for themselves, but the boundaries within fandom itself.

Because, going back to the whole rhetorical reenactment you had up there, there was a time when NSFW creators used to be able to lock up their work behind certain tags so that creators and minors wouldn't have to see it unless they took it upon themselves to sniff around. Remember things like Steven Universe smut being tagged as 'Stephen Galaxy', MLP smut having the nickname of 'Clop', or even people trying to recreate that effect in the Cookie Run fandom with tags like 'NotSafeforCookies'.

On the opposite end of this (the boundary established for NSFW to exist in so that creators and minors wouldn't have to see it), then, it would be understood that Creators and Minors wouldn't engage with said content.

Is the picture that I'm trying to establish here clear? Because while we can talk about 'respect a creator's boundaries' until the cows come home, some people will just not want to do that. Especially in the current fandom-space where NSFW is being demonized more and more. However, we are currently suffering a pandemic of people either refusing to tag properly or purposefully tagging their work with the most popular tags so that it is basically guaranteed to go outside of its intended audience.

And that is why, in a conversation that should only center around a creator becoming overwhelmed by how people are treating and feeling justified to their creation, you keep having people bring up fanpol and proshippers. Because that boundary being trampled on by both sides of the equation is what will continue to cause situations like this.

Character Summary:

Not many people really know Jaque personally. He doesn't trust people easily, but he gets along with them just fine. He is open, lighthearted and very charismatic. He seems to ooze a certain coolness, capturing peoples attention with how laid back and in control he seems. This side of him is what allows Jaque to be such an effective negotiator and the go to person for mediating between different fractions. He approaches people with respect but distance, never giving them the feeling of being threatened or in a disadventagous position unless the situation asks for it. He is warm and understanding, not minding lending people an ear, but in turn never truly discloses anything about himself. Despite seeing people like Sergey and Leo as his friends they barely know anything personal about him. That is not to say that he doesn't like them or that he doesn't care- he does! A lot even! But coming from a place of constant carnige and betrayal he has learned to keep people a certain distance. The only people he seems to allow closer are Carol and Zarria. While they too do not know much about him, he seems to have a certain soft spot for them.

Background:

Jaque grew up in a rather poor neighborehood in the south of italy, where the region was plagued by constant tension between different mafia families and so Jaque early had to leanr how to survive in the underground. He became part of a group of street kids that tried to make a few bucks by thievery, but was then used as a scapegoat for the others to get away. The family that got a hold of them saw potential in him and due to the then Dons son vouching for Jaque he could afford to pay off the money that was stolen and decided to make use of his skills as a capable fighter. At age 20 he took the Varia initiation exam and passed, quickly making himself known to be not just a capable fighter but also a great specialist when it comes to mediation between fractions as this was something he learned from the Dons son back then.

Fighting Style:

Jaque uses 2 swords he carries on his back, both uncurved katana, or ninjato. He actually modified them to be extremely electricity conducting and keeps a tazerlike battery contraption in the handle so he does not have to use his flame excessively. His slashes and stabs can therefore heat up so extremely that his attacks seem as if to come from a lightsaber, immideatly cauterizing the wound. He doesn't abide by any specific school of swordsmanship and relies on brute strength to break through an opponents defense.

Just like any other lightning division member he is also an expert in hand to hand combat and can easily punch someones lights out. He of course can't get to the same powerscale as Leo, but he is still devastatingly strong.

His boxes are mostly conventional blast, shot or battery boxes.

Top 10 bioshock guys who are within prime tumblr sexyman range if a movie or show comes out (Or the games blow up again):

1. Atlas. His thirst-fandom within the bioshock community is well and healthy. The people thirsting after him aren't going away anytime soon and are more likely to expand as the fandom grows again.

2. Robert Lutece. This dude was a sexyman back in the day, therefore he's likely to be one again if the games blow up again, especially if he’s in a movie.

3. Cohen/J.S. Steinman. Putting these two together because they have equal potential for Edgelord Villain™ thirsting. Cohen would probably get more Tim Burton Willy Wonka/Mad Hatter treatment while Steinman would get Medic tf2 treatment.

4. Reed Wahl. Now this may seem like a bit of a curveball, but think about it. Not many people paid attention to bioshock 2, let alone its dlc, so more attention to it would probably mean that Wahl would get some stans. By virtue of being a skinny white guy (bonus points since he's a villain and a nerd) he’s going to get a lot of people turning him into a sexyman, especially if he’s got a hot actor. (I knew from one look at Silco from Arcane that he was a sexyman despite knowing nothing abt it and I was right- these two are in a similar wheelhouse)

5. Jack. Ah, our beloved boy. He's only so low because he has a lot of potential for people to not be thirsty for him depending on how he’s presented. If jack is too mean then he won’t be liked and if he’s too sweet he won’t be tasty enough for sexyman standards. If people do turn him into a sexyman, he'll be exclusively drawn as a blonde-haired blue-eyed twink. (something that's already a thing in the fandom, but will only be more popular due to sexyman gaze)

6. Silas Cobb/Kyle Fitzpatrick/Hector Rodriguez. These three depend on how they’re cast and how much time they get, but looking at their history on here and Deviantart, there WILL be a a solid base turning them into sexymen.

7. Booker/Martin Finnegan. Putting these two together because they feel very close to sexyman potential but their personalities and looks being so gruff sets them back a little. In all likelihood, people will either ignore their personalities or make them more twinkish to compensate. People who sexyman characters like edge, but too much edge isn’t appealing.

8. Mark Meltzer. Liked by fans, has a good personality, and will likely be good looking, easy sexyman potential- but only if he's included in a movie or show. It’s likely he will be included because he has some love, but there is potential for him to be dropped. Only drawbacks may be not being skinny or edgy enough.

9. Louie McGraff. Not likely from games alone since the multiplayer is very neglected. If given time to shine on screen, he does have a good standing as a sexyman for being an edgy white guy.

10. Stanley Poole. I doubt he will be turned into a sexyman from the games alone, but with movie casting there is potential for him to be 'woobified' so to speak. Main things keeping him back are his ugly past and wimpy personality, but thirst for a hot actor may prevail over any canon as it has many times before.

For those least likely to be a sexyman:

1. The Wales brothers. They’re pretty unlikable and on the plain side in terms of villainy. Especially with the religious aspect behind them, I do not see them getting sexyman status even if they are super hot in a film/show adaptation (An unlikely casting choice).

2. Peach Wilkins/Cornelius Slate. I see that they're kind of annoying to most and pretty plain characters overall. Interesting backstory but the current characterization isn’t weird enough to be likeable on Steinman/Cohen levels. Not on the level of villains we love to hate but not super hateable either- just eh.

3. Jeremiah Fink/Zachary H. Comstock. Grouping them together because they're hateable but not in any kind of fun way. They’re boring capitalists and religious nuts who are racist as all hell- which I don’t think would go down as well with a younger fanbase. Any likers will be cancelled immediately.

4. Suchong. Highly ignored as an antagonist because he’s hateable, but not very loveable. As far as I’ve seen, he’s pretty widely loathed in fact so his sexyman status dips into the negative on that count. Casting him as hot and being an edgy evil scientists can bring him back up, but he won’t get as much of a fanbase as some of the other guys here without more nuanced characterization. He’s more likely to be turned into a racist caricature by new fans than any other character of color in this series.

5. Gil Alexander. Another antagonist character that's pretty ignored. Very fun villain but not many fans are willing to give him proper love or see him as sexy. If he’s cast hot enough and given some attention he might get a few fans but likelihood is low.

6. Charles Milton Porter. Not edgy enough really, but very very lovable and has much angst potential. Porter has some upsides by not having anything hateable about him in canon and having a sweet personality to the core, but fandom racism is a powerful foe and so a thirsty fanbase is not a high possibility compared to the white or non-black characters. If he’s given a lot of love and a super super hot actor then a small bit might grow for him, but he might also get the Finn from Rouge One treatment.

7. Augustus Sinclair. Lovable like Porter but might be too sweet, even with his ugly backstory. Also, he's not only fat in canon, but also a person of color. Casting will have to either whitewash or skinny wash (Or both) him to give him a chance at being a thirst trap for the fandom on the level of Meltzer at least.

8. Bill McDonagh/Sullivan. Really overlooked by the fandom despite being very likeable and some grit to their lives so I don't see a thirst lineup anytime soon unless they get sufficiently hot actors and some strong characterization and screentime in a movie/show.

9. Andrew Ryan/Frank Fontaine. Fun characters, absolutely villains you love to hate (Esp Fontaine) but not many in the fandom actively thirst for them. Most people I've seen actually find them funny if anything. Will get hot actors undoubtedly so the thirsting will increase, but sexyman status is still low.

10. Delta. Hes a pretty fluffy character in the fandom, but not many overt thirsters, however being cast hot enough in a movie can absolutely rocket him to sexyman status.

Hang Around For Scooby Doo: SD Ghoul School Review (Comission for Emma Fici)

Happy Halloween all you happy people! Our halloween stuff rolls on as I introduce a new not at all consitent series on this blog, Hang Around For Scooby Doo! This probably won't be a monthly thing like my muppets reviews, but it will be fun.

See over a year and a half ago my good friend @jess-the-vampire and I started having movie nights every Tuesday and Wedsday on her nights off. It was during this we found a mutual love of Scooby Doo, both having grown up with it despite being a generation apart. So when she told me about a Scooby Doo film where Scooby goes into space in a trek inspired heavily by BioShock and alien, how could I say no? The film was Moon Monster Madness, and I shall cover it some day. Finding out i'd missed films like this made me curious: I'd grown up with the DTV scooby movies, even watching them into high school on sick days or summer days as CN played them a lot, but after Chill Out, Scooby Doo, they stopped playing them as much, and I stopped seeing them as a result.

So in over a year and a half we watched and re-watched ALLL OF THEM. No hyperbole. We watched the greats, we found hidden gems and we also suffered through Return To Zombie Island and Fred's weird singing voice in the somehow boring vampire musical. And once we were done… we kept going and have been watching some Scooby doo ever so often since. We watch other stuff sure, it's how I got sucked down the Miraculous Ladybug Hole, but it's built on a foundation of Scooby Doo

And of course watching entirely too much Scooby Doo has given me a MASIVE repository of review material yet untapped. From weird individual episodes like Shaggy becoming king of the goths, Fred's ass terrifying everyone, One of NSYNC framing the Gang for crimes, Shaggy nearly being drowned for being a witch or a rejected skeletor minion haunting a 70's dude at Wimbledon. IT's a weird wonderful buffet and since my good friend Emma commissioned this from me, we got a great place to start digging in Shaggy style so Hang Around after the Read More for Scooby Doo: Ghoul School!

The history for this one is interesting, as this flim happens to be part of another small project I've intended to start for a while: an on and off look at the Superstar 10, 10 films packaged for Hanna Barbera's funtastic world of hannaa barbera saturday morning block. Even if you haven't heard of them, you may of seen some as all three red shirt shaggy films as well as Flintstones Meet the Jetsons are part of it, and cartoon network tended to air them a lot growing up as they filled up time nicely. Why the others weren't used, especially since one of Yogi Bear's other films, his wonderful christmas special, was aired every year…

But the non-scooby ones are only avaliable via Warner Archives, so i'm curoius to see what hiden gems and things that are better off locked in the archives lie in wait, so once again while this review is paid for, it's something that was inevitble.

The Superstar Ten Trilogy of Scooby Films is highly notable for being the first Scooby Doo films, the ones that likely gave the crew of Zombie Island to try one for the DTV market as unsuprisingly these three had vhs' (and I had one for the reluctant werewolf. Wish I still did. It was sweet. ). These films paved the way for us to have almost 50 MORE after them.

This trilogy is also intresting for when it was made: coming out in the mid 80's, this was around the same time as 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo, The New Scooby Doo shows and others that largely broke from formula with Fred and Velma largely put on a bus , leaving the gang just Scooby, Shaggy, Daphne.. Scrappy

And their bitching van. Despite the show before it being the bane of many fans at the times existence, the Daphne and Shaggy era shows are well regarded and I hope to binge 13 ghosts at some point as it sounds utterly awesome. Weirdly though despite Scrappy's wide backlash he wasn't the team member to get dumped for these movies, with the trio instead being reduced to just Shaggy, Scooby and Scrappy. Now…

Scrappy.. really isn't that annoying here. He still has his traits of running at danger and being Scooby's Hype Dog, but he's also fairly intelligent, helpful and functions as a replacement Fred without being nearly as bland as pre-Zombie Island Fred Jones. I mean he can't say treasure that special way

But he still does well. It's why i'm really baffled at how Scrappy's been reduced to either not existing anymore (Curse of the 13th ghost) or a hilarious joke not to be talked about (Mystery Incorpeated): yes he's widely hated but you can do stuff with him as seen with the 2001 Movie and Scooby Apocalypse. And you can do stuff with him as is. I will always be in favor of fixing a character if possible instead of just tossing them aside because it's supposedly what people want, something I doubt will change for poor Scrappy as Warner Bros Discovery has shown it doesn't care what anyone wants, needs or feels.

The Red Shirt Trilogy is also notable for being one of the biggest examples of real monsters in the franchise. As I found out via Billiam's videos these weren't the first time this happened, but it became one of the most memorable, both due to these films getting replayed more often than the scrappy era shows, and because of the neat designs, memorable characters, and all three breaking from the mystery of the week format. Sure there is an unmasking in Boo Brothers, but instead of trying to figure out whose haunting them the Red Shirt trilogy focuses on different genres each time: Reluctant Werewolf is a very mild Horror Comedy that turns into Wacky Races, and our feature presentation today being a slice of life school based story that turns into an adventure film in the last act. It shows just how flexible Scooby Doo is and why it's lasted so long: You can do a LOT with these characters, whether there's a mystery or not and new writers never stop coming or having new ideas to bring to the table. While it was a surprise, it wasn't hugely shocking to find out the writer of this one, Glenn Leopold, went on to write the first three dtv scooby doo movies, all very different. It does surprise me he wrote the godawful and boring Scooby-Doo! in Arabian Nights, but I forgive him.

So with that we can actually get to the movie itself which as I said is a shockingly chill for most of it's runtime slice of life comedy: Shaggy, Scooby and Scrappy are heading to Grimwood's School for Girls to become the new gym teachers. Some of you less familiar with Scooby Doo may laugh, but keep in mind both Scooby and Shaggy are storied Laugh-A-Lympics trained athletes, their team the Scoobie Doobies having won a mind boggling 14 out of 24 games in this storied contest, and Shaggy would later participate in the World Invitational Games. Their more than qualified. Scrappy is there because I assume Scooby just adopted him at some point becaues having scrappy for a child did this to a his mother

So she had to pass the curse on to someone. Naturally things can't ever be easy for our heroes and they find out that while Miss Grimwood herself seems human, we'll get to that, the rest of the students are all the daughters of classic horror monsters: Sibella, the fantastic daughter of dracula with a habit of saying fantastic, using her hair like a cape (something Jess caught and I didn't) and turnign into a bat, Elsa Frankentien, daughter of Frankenstien and somehow bride of Frankenstein, maybe they had hate sex and they alternate weeks I dunno, Phanty, a delightfully hyper phantom with a love of exorcist head and a dad whose apparently the phantom of the opera's ghost? I have a lot of questions I dont' think Erik is ever going to answer. but I mean.. it tracks. He does die in most adaptations, so… there's that, Winnie the son of some sort of wolfman, and Tanis, an adorable Mummy child whose conception is best left a mystery.

Shaggy naturally tries to run the fuck away but he's under contract, with Scooby and Scrappy as witnesses. What's nice though is while Shaggy is, being shaggy, is a bit freaked at first he quickly warms up to the girls. It's a gradual shift and while the character development probably could be done a tad more overtly, it still works for the time with Shaggy going from being afraid of these precious children to genuinely supporting them and being the coach they need. The bulk of the first act is just shaggy training up these girls and doing fun exercises with them. The girls even happily get their coach a pizza without being asked when he can't find anything he likes to eat at grimwood (understandably since in classic adamss family fashion everything's rotten). And while it has cobwebs and stuff they genuinely like it and try it. It's small stuff.. but it works.

It helps the girls themselves are incredibly endearing. Their not huge on personality in the dialogue itself, mostly being limited to their traits of "Vampire", "Kinda awkward", "goofy and does the head spin", "energetic werewolf" and "baby girl baby", but the various quirks they have animation wise and their genuine kindness and enthuastim towards their coaches make them hard not to root for. It's no wonder the five became instant fan faviorites and it's more suprising it took TWENTY YEARS to have any sort of followup, especially since after likewise breaking out the Hex Girls have shown up in every series sense. Also if your curious yes we will be getting to it this halloween, Emma's using her patreon review for it. Their just well designed, fun characters and add to the fun chill atmosphere. It's also a nice lesson about tolerance without hitting you over the head with it: Shaggy sees someone different, reacts badly, but grows to see them as what they are: people who are different but at the end of the day still just people. Simple yet heartwarming.

Playing our girls we have Susan Blu, whose a long time voice actor and voice director, best known for this flim and Transformers The Movie as Arcee, as Sibella, Patty Maloney who played Twiki on Buck Rogers a few times and Darla in the 80's version of the little rascals I just found out existed, as Lil Tanis, the late, great Russi Taylor as Phanty, Susan Blu, mother of Mae Witman it turns out and vetran va as Elsa, and the late longtime HB voice actress Marilyn Schreffler as Winnie. Impressively all but two of them came back for the OK KO reunion years later, with only Schreffler and Maloney being replaced as the former had sadly passed ona nd the later had retired, with it being JUST in time to catch Russi Taylor before her tragic passing not long after.

As for what Shaggy's coaching them for in grand 80's fashion he's training them for the big game with the snotty rivals just next door, the Callaway Cadets who seem to be actively in denial about the girls being monsters. Thankfully while they avoid the trap of most standard 80's

Characters: Unlike say Huey Dewey and Louie or the bros of my little pony tales, the boys, while cocky and confident, are mostly just clever and ready to win and are heavily regimented. At most their petty jerks and cheaters, but there's no overt sexism needing to be taught a lesson here. It's also nice that their one plus sized member Tug is NOT singled out for his weight or the subject of constant fat jokes. Which doesn't seem like a high bar clear but for the time it is. At most he falls on a guy maybe once. Their a little charming but obviously leagues behind the girls in terms of actually being memorable. Their col is also delightfully stuck up, the Callaway himself. Their also well child acted, with future robin Scott Mellinvlle being one of them.

I will admit there's not a huge amount of build up to said game, it's the main goal for 2/3 of the movie but htere's no traning montages or real drive to win other than Tanis wanting one for her big ass mummy case. But it really doesn't matter: It's more about having fun with these characters with the game simply a setup for said fun and some hyjinks. The big game isn't the reason we're here, i'ts to see shaggy and scooby get into antics, some ghoul children be adorable and quirky, and legendary action Glynis Johns to ham it up to all hell as Mrs. Grimwood. Mrs. G is delightful, being wonderful supportive of her girls, a decent enough boss, and fun to be around. She's also in my eyes a witch since, given the later OK KO crossover, that's an actual species in this unvierse and we don't have one on the good guys side so why not. She also has an octopus butler i'm hence dubbing Geoffry. He rocks even if I somehow forget about him EVERY TIME I watch this film. The film is good Adams Family/Munsters style fun complete with thinking creepy things are fun, eating gross food, and shrieking for exercise making the two buzzards who work there quit.

The actual game is engaging though as you want the girls to win, they use their powers, the boys use the power of cheating, it's good times. Seriously the cadets just.. blatantly cheat in front of them. Dick Dastardly at least had the decency to try and do it while no one but the audience was looking. Come on man. OUr heroines naturally win of course, with Tanis getting the trophy that they just pass back and forth because why not.

We also get a really adorable scene as it's PARENTS DAY!… which for Shaggy and Scooby means

Though it turns out like their kids the various parents.. are all nice. Tanis' dad in paticular gets the immortal line "I don't want to hurt you I want to HUG YOU!" Awww, what a sweetheart. THey also all thretan to straight up murder shaggy and scooby if their daughters get hurt

This leads us into the last act.. and the weakest part of the film. See either because the script ran short, the execs wanted it or the writer just done goofed, the last part feels kind of jammed in there. The first chonk of the film is fun slice of life while the last third is an adventure film with horror elements in which the dread witch Revolta and her much cooler and more intmidating assitant the Grim Creeper kidnap the girls and plan to brainwash them to give Revolta an army to become top monster since the girls dads went soft raising families. I mean dracula emptied a whole boat before settling down. Can't argue that.

The problem is besides Revolta feeling really jammed in, only showing up for one scene to show us she exists in the first section of the film, she's also REALLY boring. Ruta Lee gives a great voice performace but Revolta's design is meh and her personality is entirely absent. She has no motive other than

Which granted isn't much of a step down from most scooby doo villians crooked real estate schemes, but it just makes her boring. And if she did more I might respect her but she spends the film sending out minons, her spider bats and the again far more awesome grim creeper and grousing at the Creeper ocasionally. She could be replaced by her sidekick entirely and the film would not change. She also somehow.. surivives the finale? Which like.. is someone going to send the cops after her? Are there monster cops? Would anyone else want to see that spinoff? Valid questions.

The Creeper is great though, voiced by Andre Stojka who played the owl in winnie the poo after this. Great guy. The creeper has a neat , creepy design, a great voice and depsite bein ga tad goofy is a through threat, being the one who actually you know does shit, using his vines to grab people, going out to help the spider-bats with the kidnapping and generally doing all the work. He even tries feading Scooby , Shaggy and Scrappy to a well dweller who also looks neat, and is cleverly defeated by scrappy getting it to play with a bouncing ball. I genuinely wish he was the main villian. Granted I also love any and all cyclopses like this boy here

But still the Grim Creeper rocks. The last third of the film dosen't: Once the kidnappings happen, which are genuinely creepy and unsettling , paticuarlly Sibella as while she tries to escape she's captured mid-air by the bats and Winnie and Tanis who are dragged into an abandoned shack by their big sister figures, so it's not al lbad.. but then the last 25 minutes is just almost entirely our heroes dicking around a castle. There's some good bits such as Shaggy meeting the bad shaggy, because he's the good shaggy, whose just a …

With Evil Shag being genuinely creepy.. but instead of serving any plot ponit he just.. runs back into the mirror after chasing Scooby and then Scrappy for a bit while the girls chant "I obey only revolta " to an annoying degree. It'd be creepier to have them actually attack their surrogate uncles instead of just, you know chanting and doing nothing. It's not TERRIBLE, the good set pieces help outweigh the bad parts, but it's nothing really special or necessary after 2/3 of a really fun chill slice of life comedy.

The climax likewise is just kinda there: Our heroes just happen to accidently break Sibella free, she frees the rest, and the cadets, who previously refused to help for no good reason…

Had a change of heart and decided to come help and take everyone away on their helicopter they have because the one kids an inventor and they actually set it up so good for them. Our heroes escape and have a really fun dance party to the Scrappy Rap, aka Scrappy being shockingly fun as an mc. It's cheesy sure but it's sstill got a decent beat, is fine for a goofy 80's film, and is far from the most embarassing rap i've seen

The ending.. dosen't quite work for me as Shaggy and Scooby run off from next semesters kids: A creature from the black lagoon who looks delightfully orange, an alien, and Godzooky 2: The Quickening. Seriously I want to know more about these kids they look adorable. GIVE ME A SEQUEL YOU COWARDS

So that was Scooby Doo and the Ghoul School and while far from the deepst or scariest scooby work, it's one of the funnest, the most creative and it has an octopus butler. None of us can say that and more should frankly. If you can find it, as it is on DVD at least, check it out. It's a fun ride and easily the best of the Red Shirt Trilogy, which i'll get back to.. eventually.
