Sannyo's Flowers
You occasionally see art of Sannyo with flowers: [link to an example by Kajatony]
The reason for this is not only that Sannyo Komakusa is named after the Komakusa flower, but also that she named and themed her Spellcards after Japanese mountain flowers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mountain Sign "Heaven-Shaking Kumomagusa" / Mountain Apparition "Astonishing Kumomagusa" (depending on difficulty)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mountain Sign "Usuyukisou Shining with Bewitching Light" / Mountain Apparition "Usuyukisou of Thronging Crowds of Youma" (depending on difficulty)
And of course, her namesake
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mountain Flower "Komakusa of Massacre" / Mountain Flower "Mountain Queen of Massacre" ( depending on difficulty)
Even her nonSpells resemble flowers.
Tumblr media
Its extremely cute that instead of modeling them after smoke, or gambling, she chose some of her favorite mountain flowers. She has very unique tastes, especially the Usuyukisou which aren't quite conventionally beautiful but they definitely look like lasers with sunlight shining off of them. Though they certainly have their charm shining in the sunlight.
She actually has a few flowers in her den in Lotus Eaters as well
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We aren't likely to be seeing them in Lotus Eaters again since Sannyo can only keep them on the mountain, but it's really great we got to see them when we did. It's nice knowing she canonicaly takes care of some in addition to modeling her Spellcards after them.
Also last but not least, the Title Lotus Eaters gave her was.
Tumblr media
a very appropriate, and poetic title for her; and it explains why she loves tough mountain flowers so much. she's a bit of a mountain flower herself after all.

Random-Mailbox's Favorite Sailor Moon Fics - Week 36 - Sex Pollen
Tumblr media
Sex Pollen as a trope is also not as big in this fandom as one would imagine. @lilliebellfanfics has suggested I try to put something together because "it’s spring and pollen season", which seems like an amazing idea until I realized how many of the Sex Pollen trope stories went into the Potions post around Halloween. Thankfully, I have more for you to explore!
As always, my apologies in advance for spoiling some of these for you (Fic Titles are linked to either FFN or AO3 entries).
The Armour That We Wear - @sailoreuterpe
In this one-shot Usagi and Mamoru start to deal with implications of their anime-inspired break-up after a sex-bubble causes their inhibitions to fall.
La Douleur Exquise - @floraone
This story ties into "4 authors 1 prompt series", parts of which are in the Potions post linked above. In this two-shot, Usagi and Mamoru are working through co-existing within their civilian and superhero lives, while trying to stop people from getting hurt. I loved that this take causes changes in the timeline and forces Black Moon clan and Chibiusa to become anomalies.
All's Fun with Love and Orbs - @irritablevowel
This is another addition to the "4 authors 1 prompt series" with a focus on Dead Moon Circus arc. In a non-traditional take, meddling from Amazones Quartet causes everyone to argue instead of being unable to keep their hands off each other.
Happy Hump Day!: Chapter 1: Lunar on a Hot Tin Roof - @shnuggletea
With Tokyo experiencing a crazy heatwave, Usagi cannot seem to be able to cool down. Mamoru is the only person who can bring down her fever, even if it might not be in the most conventional way. This is the first chapter of a collection of unrelated lemons if you want to keep exploring.
One story that became part of the Reveals series but might make more sense here is Impulse by @areptiledysfunction1107 , where mysterious fog from a youma is to blame for Tuxedo Mask's inability to see straight when it comes to a certain blonde.
---
That's it for this week. Next week are Psychometry stories! Some have definitely made their way into other posts but I hope I will introduce you all to a few more!
Here are the links to the previous Tumblr posts in these series to explore more amazing works based on different themes - make sure to check them out if you haven't had a chance! (Click on title name to go to the post) - I will keep updating the list every week as new posts come up:

Random Concepts I found interesting
When a Quincy kills you, your soul is destroyed
A incantation curse is broken when the person who did it has their tongue cut off in Truth or Dare
Pokemon faint when defeated
Phoenyx lose immortality when they take a soul
The Wheel creating the Dragon in WOT
A creature begin killed and the place their fallen never grow life again
Not sure from where, but I remember something Fate/Stay-Like classes, where the characters could only use certain weapons each one
The monster made of ashes of the people Capricorn killed in Inkheart
Enkidu turning back into Clay after Gilgamesh refused Ishtar
Instead of fighting the monster, you have to make it cry
The guy that literally grew roots in Saramandaia
Not begin able to fight in a sacred place in Highlander, low-key similar the Dothhaki not drawing blood in their sacred city
The language of flowers in general
I like 'weird thefts' like heart, voice or eye (but more in a magical way?)
Not sure if its canon, but in SP, there was a creture that 'bad things' happened when you injured them?
The whole 'turning into something' can be both weird and neat
A place only certain people can enter or can't leave
The Helcaraxe's betrayal, just the ships burning and the rest of the Noldor begin forced to walk through a frozen land.
Kirin in Twelve Kingdoms, all of it: the fact they were born from tree, have their lives connected with the rulers they choose, the whole 'they will eat my corpse when I die' deals they have with Youma, the fantasy horse stuff.
Akuma no Mi's eaters can't swim, its so random, I loved it
A river made of tears, it run through all the worlds
The 'Cannot Tell a Lie' magical rule, the whole 'Time Works Different in this Place' fairy rings stuff too
Zodiac Signs, while I don't believe, they are interesting and pretty aesthetic
Once read (not sure where) about three Hounds begin named 'Beside, Behind and Before' because 'look beside, look behind you, look before you. You can't escape them'

I'm so sorry, but Jouji (Mamoru's) face when he's portraying pain really cracks me up. lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am so confused about Hina's condition - so she's awake enough to run matching Mamoru's speed, yet passes out/falls back asleep the moment she is on the ground? She's just being flung around like a ragdoll as Mamoru pull her after him???
(Yes, I'm skipping screenshotting Mamoru's flared nostrils...)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Usagi / Moon must have really good eyesight to be able to see that Mamoru and Hina are holding hands in that distance, coz I know I would not be able to see it that clearly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's really not the time for Moon to hyperfocus on her tragic love story, but really love the small but significant gesture of Jupiter running in front to give Moon a moment to gather herself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Appreciate Jupiter immediately going for a Flower Hurricane without wasting time. What was everyone else doing just posing? lol Youma's not pulling any punches as well, immediately deflecting the attack. I guess Rei never got a chance to warn the others about how strong this Youma was?
Not gonna lie, I've been so hyper-focused on the part when Venus joins in, despite how much I love Act 18, I'm actually quite hazy about how this initial part of facing off the Youma goes...

Movie Trivia: Sailor Moon R
I wrote up some trivia about the Sailor Moon R film, namely it’s connection with the TV series. Out of the three original films, R seems to be the only one that directly references the main TV series continuity. Whether it's truly canon or not is up for debate, but it definitely feels as though it adds an extra layer to the original TV series.
Tumblr media
Check it out!
1. Introduction
Tumblr media
The opening scene is a re-imagining of the little “Usagi introductions” that were used in the first series, up until the reveal of the Moon Princess. There is also a nice visual throwback to the original eye catch.
2. The Villains
Tumblr media
Fiore is very obviously modeled after Ail, an anime exclusive antagonist who appears in the Makaijuu arc of Sailor Moon R. The reason being is that this film is Ikuhara’s “re-imagining” of the Makaijuu arc.
The Xenian Flower is modeled after Youma Cyrene’s human disguise from episode 6, which was Ikuhara’s directorial debut in the Sailor Moon universe. Kazuko Tadano was the animation director for that episode, as well as this film.
Ail and An’s original voice actors, Hikaru Midorikawa and Yumi Toma also provided the voices for Fiore, and Xenian, respectively.
3. Tuxedo Mask sacrifices himself for Sailor Moon
Tumblr media
This one is very obvious. In both episode 34 and the R film, Tuxedo is brutally impaled while protecting Moon. The shots are almost identical.
4. The death of Mamoru’s parents
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We get another callback to episode 34. Amusingly, the doctor has a different design (and voice actor?) between the TV series and film. Young Mamoru doesn't have bandages in the film, perhaps to signify time has passed between his parents dying and meeting Fiore? There are many discrepancies with flashbacks to the TV series, but also flashbacks exclusive to the actual film. For example, Mamoru remembers Fiore as being a human boy but Fiore's memories prove otherwise. Also, pay attention to the iconic rose that appears in the flashback scenes.
This was likely an intentional choice by Ikuhara to illustrate that memories aren't linear.
5. Chibiusa’s Gun
Tumblr media
Chibiusa turns Luna P into a toy gun, which she fires at Sailor Moon. Obviously a throwback to her first appearance (in both the anime and manga), where she threatens Usagi with a gun (which later turned out to be toy).
6. Homage to Zoisite
Tumblr media
I never noticed this until I glanced over the Sailor Moon R Movie Memorial Album. This shot of Fiore emerging from the flowerbed seems to be inspired by Zoisite covered by rats in episode 31. Ikuhara also directed that episode.
7. Memories of Usagi
Tumblr media
These flashbacks really fascinate me. Let's break them down: Ami: This moment is from episode 20. This particular sequence in the film was handled by Hisashi Kagawa, who was also the animation director for episode 20. Some details are spot on, while others aren't.
Rei: This flashback appears to based on Usagi and Rei’s exchange at the end of episode 54. Most of the details are different (the actual scene happened at Rei’s school, not the shrine, etc). I guess Ikuhara was trying to say Rei has an unreliable memory? LOL
Mako: This is Mako's first formal meeting with Usagi from episode 25. Again, Kawagawa also worked on episode 25. This flashback is the most accurate.
Minako: Appears to be based on the very beginning of episode 35. The setting is completely different (TV series was near water, movie is in a park?) and Minako has a cute response to Usagi's fan girling that isn’t in the TV episode. This movie (as well as the Make up! mini movie) reference Minako's past as Sailor V, something that doesn't get mentioned again after S.
8. Climax
Tumblr media
The entire climax of the film is obviously an homage to the final battle in episode 46. Ikuhara also directed that episode. Interestingly enough, the shots of the girls yelling their transformation phrases would be copied in episode 88.
9. Mamoru’s Mind
Tumblr media
Fiore communicating with Mamoru within his mind is inspired by a similar scene in episode 51. The backgrounds are identical. Episode 51 was also directed by Ikuhara.
10. The Kiss
Tumblr media
The kiss at the very end of the film was modeled after a scene at the end of the manga’s first story arc.
There you have it!

The Queen swears him into her service when he’s half conscious. All Four Kings standing in the circle, only one of them wracked with shivers. His skinny knees knocking together and lips turning blue with frost - the others aren’t bothered, but they’re wearing thick uniforms in contrast to his threadbare pajamas.
He’s still a slip of a boy, skinny as a new tree and still trembling in the cold of D-Point. The  shadow Queen says that he has just been awoken, but he doesn’t think that’s completely right - he has fresh scrapes on his knees and a bruise blossoming across one high cheekbone, a distant ache in his soul that warns him that this isn’t where he’s meant to be and there is a man he should be protecting… but he forgets all of that within the first night. In fact, he forgets everything after that first  night - waking up the next morning knowing only three things.
One, he had much to learn.
Two, he was a King of the Dark Kingdom.
And three, that was not enough. He would have to kill their leader and take his power for himself.
Not out of malice, no certainly not, but a glance at the man tells him all he needs to know. Kunzite is calm, cool, and in command - a potential threat, a blockage in the path to success.
Jadeite he warms to easily. Jadeite is closer in age and in temperament, hauling the younger King under his own downy wings and offering whatever tidbits of advice he could. Nephrite had a temper and liked to drink alone after dark, Queen Beryl is lovely (he didn’t see it) and vindictive, (he did, within the first hour he’d witnessed her flay a youma in a fit of rage), the youma will be loyal to you so long as you offer them dregs of kindness – and Kunzite is an ice statue. Beautiful to look at, but hollow. What you saw was all there was there.
“I wouldn’t worry about him, though,” Jadeite confides, patching him up after a fire spell goes awry. “
He accepted this with little care. Kunzite did not seek him out, and he did not seek him. The eldest of them preferred his dark quarters and Zoisite was prone to wandering, losing himself in the small pocket of the caves that he was permitted to call his.
Under Jadeite’s tutelage he learned how to grow withered flowers from the threads of imagination.. but that was all he could offer. Beryl places him with Nephrite to learn the art of potionwork and spellcraft.
“Stay away from Kunzite,” Nephrite warned one night after practice, seated on the balcony of his ridiculously lavish mansion. A glass of wine in hand, the stars twinkling above.
“Is that why she keeps him chained in the bowels of this dungeon like a beast?” Zoisite stretches, feet propped up on the table between them.
“No,” Nephrite shoves them off in a reflex. “That’s just where he likes to be. Don’t bother him.”
As he turns to go, he thinks he hears something bitter (“Everything he touches withers and dies.”) but pays no heed. He has places to be.
With Nephrite he flourished, easily outclassing his teacher within months and settling into easy, playful banter (he saw the frustration, the dark hints of envy, and it is there that he finds security) before that too was exhausted. Zoisite was not a fighter, not strong enjoy for hand to hand or reflexive enough for swordplay, but he did excel in magic and planning. She makes the decision without consulting him, without bothering to ask Jadeite if it was proper or if Nephrite thought it was a good fit.
Kunzite isn’t even there to tell.
He stumbles into Kunzite’s dark quarters with arms laden full of spellbooks and crafts, unsure of what it is that he’s meant to be learning. The room is dark and empty - he thinks, perhaps, that he must have the wrong one and simply lets the objects drop, baring his teeth in a stubborn snarl and the rotten luck of it all.
They’re stopped mere inches from the floor.
He whirls, a hand at the ready to strike - but that wouldn’t do much good. A voice from above comes, the softest of throat clears. Kunzite stares down at him from the high ceiling, one silver eyebrow perfectly arched at the display.
Impressive.

[MOVIE] Sailor Moon R: The Movie.
Kana: 劇場版 美少女戦士セーラームーンR Romaji: Gekijouban Bishoujo Senshi Seeraa Muun Aru
Original Theatrical Release Date: December 5, 1993
Director: Kunihiko Ikuhara Writer: Sukehiro Tomita Animation Director: Kazuko Tadano
Plot: The alien that Mamoru met as a child returns to fulfill his promise.
TRIVIA
The film was coupled with with a recap special called Make Up! Sailor Senshi. It featured clips from the first season of the televised story.
Fiore and the Xenian Flower are respectively voiced by Ail and An’s actors, Hikaru Midorikawa and Yumi Touma, from the first arc of R.
It is believed that this movie’s events occurred between episodes 77 and 82. Chibiusa learned the identities of the Sailor Senshi in episode 72, Mamoru and Usagi reconciled in episode 77, and the Sailor Senshi and Chibiusa went to the future starting in episode 82.
Although Kazuko Tadano was the animation director, other animation directors from the television series contributed to the film. This includes Ikuko Ito, Shinya Hasegawa, Hisashi Kagawa, and Hiromi Matsushita.
Young Mamoru was voiced by Megumi Ogata, who also notably played Petz and Haruka Tenou/Sailor Uranus.
The movie eventually earned ¥1.3 billion ($13 million USD) in 1994, making it the seventh highest grossing film in Japan that year.
All of the text on the Mercury Goggle display was in German. Ami did consider leaving the team to study abroad in Germany in episode 62.
Several scenes referenced moments in the television series: Mamoru’s impalement (episode 34), Chibiusa conjuring a toy gun (episode 60), and Princess Serenity and the Sailor Senshi combining their powers (episodes 46 and 88). While the memory Sailor Mercury had of Sailor Moon took place in episode 20, the conversation was not entirely the same.
The sign that Tuxedo Mask appeared in front of during the first encounter with Fiore and the Xenian read “Men’s Higuchi.” This could be a reference to Munehisa Higuchi, a production manager for the R movie as well as the first four seasons of the TV series.
The R movie is thought to be a summary of what series director Junichi Satou failed to accomplish in the corresponding television season.
To promote the new English dub and the upcoming home video release of the film in 2017, Viz Media hosted a limited theatrical run for the movie in select theaters in the United States and Canada.
FIRSTS
The Silver Crystal assumed a lotus shape like in the manga.
OTHER VERSIONS
Pioneer’s English dub (titled "Sailor Moon R: The Promise of the Rose"): Optimum Productions, the company that worked on both the DiC and CWi dubs, handled the first English translation of the film. Pioneer/Geneon distributed it on both VHS and region one DVD. In the scene where Ami/Amy mentioned how Mamoru/Darien was liked by both men and women, Amy said, “That's strange seeing as everybody's in love with him.” Rei/Raye’s reponse was, “Everybody including you.” Whereas in the original Japanese story, Rei and the others were surprised by Ami’s observation and teased her. Most of the attack and transformation vocal calls were more or less consistent with the names used in the DiC scripts. There were exceptions, such as Raye saying “Evil Spirits Disperse” (a literal translation of “Akuryou Taisan”) instead of “Mars Fireballs Charge. Then a few were just different altogether. “Mars Fire Ignite” (Fire Soul) was now “Mars Fireball Crash.” The part where the Sailor Senshi, after remembering their lives before meeting Usagi, tried to convince Fiore to let Sailor Moon go was a little different. In the Japanese script, Sailor Mars says that if none of them had met Usagi, they all would have been alone. However, in the English adaptation, Mars only talks about how the Xenian is going to destroy him and Darien. “Moon Revenge” was replaced with an original English song called “The Power of Love.
Viz Media’s English dub: Additional dialogue was added to the exchange in Rei’s room where Ami comments on how both men and women like Mamoru, possibly as a way to reflect the current times. The added lines were: “Not that there's anything wrong with that” and “I mean, that's fine if that's who you are.”

we know in universe, Aspros treat Defteros as if he's merely his replica, his reflection. If we analyze the reflection theme between Gemini, apparently they are all amalgamation of many mythologies about reflection from many cultures.
Defteros was seen close to sea at Sisyphus' fall, as the sea reflects the moon. Water moon. And Aspros ' Genroumaouken takes form of thorns, particularly rose thorns. Or in general he's affiliated with rose thorns a lot, really.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But he doesn't use real roses the way Albafica is, no, his roses are either metaphysical, symbolic, psychological, along those lines, but never real.
鏡花水月 , read kyoka suigetsu ,literally translates into mirror flower, water moon . The meaning of this Chinese/Japanese phrase, however, is that it means something that is merely reflected, but unreachable, as it's merely illusion, as it means flower reflection on the mirror and moon reflection on the water. You can only see, but never reach it as it's merely illusion. It could be translated that how Aspros insist the nice him was merely illusion, or his goal so that he could stay with Defteros is merely illussion. That both Aspros and Defteros are reaching for the impossible. Some also translates the phrase means purity, and Aspros is greek for white. White is the color of innocence and purity. and he lost it is what kick off his character plot, as Youma forcefully takes his innocence.
The water moon part is Defteros' part, as despite he literally have magma powers, in terms of personality, he's actually the more mellow twin when Aspros is the more passionate, volatile one. In terms of personality, Defteros is the water to Aspros' fire. As for the moon part, you know realistically moon is earth's satellite and its light is the sun's reflection. Defteros is Gemini because Aspros is one and not the other way around, and he is fine treated as Aspros' two in one deal, until Aspros turns evil and so he stops calling him niisan in the japanese versions anyway. Furthermore, Deftera is Greek for monday ( as the Greek counts monday as second day of the week) . Monday in Japanese is Getsuyoubi, literally moon day .
The kanji of the first part is, however, interchangable, as it's still read kyoka, replacing 鏡 (mirror) with 狂 (crazy, both kanji for mirror and crazy read kyou in the phrase) , or 花 (flower) with 火 (fire, as both kanji can be read ka in the phrases) , so it becomes:
狂花 ,which means crazy flower . The japanese have two particular words related to blooming, which is 咲き誇れ, read sakihokore, which means full bloom, which can translates as someone who lived to their fullest, and the other is 狂い咲き, read kuruizaki, the phrase's meaning is blooming off season, like when a fall flower blooms in spring. However, the kanji literally means blooms crazily, which can be translated as bloom UNnaturally. Albafica, despite his condition, tried to live his best as a whole, more emotionally stable, and his powers also revolve around real flowers. When Aspros, his powers is about metaphorical, illusion thorns, he's a lunatic but somehow stay aesthetic in that madness, and he also comes back from the dead to bloom oh so UNnaturally yet so aesthetically. And his thorns is , yknow, visualization of his Genroumaouken, his branwashing attack.
Moreso, Aspros is tied with blue roses, when Albafica is tied with red ones. Blue cannot be present in natural roses, not even with selective breeding, when red is the common color for roses. That's why the flower language for blue rose is "reaching for the impossible" , which what he aimed to with his goal to stay with Defteros where nobody can disturb them.
Other than blue roses, Aspros is tied with thorns in general,
taken from user nitroasphxitn for the blackthorn analysis
"blackthorn literally says: "why contempt?", "keep your promises!", beauty and longevity. the main properties of thorns: protection, destiny, good luck.
in old legends, blackthorn is referred to as a "scourge" or "strife" (quarrel, strife). also, thorn pips should not be consumed because they contain a poisonous glycoside.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"
Now for my analysis based on these for asp deft. "Why the contempt" and "keep your promises!" certainly sounds like what Defteros would have say to Aspros, as he doesn't understand why suddenly his beloved dear brother have such deeo comtempt to him, why he didn't fill his promise to protect him, to hold him dear, to rise to power together. Again, Aspros was Defteros' protector. And the destiny part, certainly it plays a lot in their relationship, as they are certainly destined for each other. They are each other's brothers, closest ally, lovers, enemies, closest confidant, soulmates, etc, all in one. And twisted their bond are, it cannot be broken, It can be twisted, but never broken, as they are that destined for each other.
As for their old name "scourge" or "strife", it certainly reflects the quarrel between the twins, as they are plenty of arts of them covered in thorns to represent the strife between them.
Tumblr media
Aspros himself is not wise, oh no he's not. He is academically smart , yes, but not wise. However, Defteros,a brother complex he is, certainly thinks Aspros is wise.
Aspros certainly is laden with vitality, as he , despite his insecurities, do have fiery , dominant, showy, passionate, unyielding and determined personality. And while it's not his real personality, Defteros can fake being the fierce and vigorous demon.
In an intentional reversion of a tradition/myth, Aspros owns the metaphysical blackthorn that is his Genroumaouken when he comes back as a Specter in tow, and to bring back the real him, Defreros did, in a allegorical sense, burn away the thorns surrounding Aspros so he can reach the real dear big brother. The association of thonrs with death is, well, about the part where Aspros is a Specter. Alternatively, it can mean only through death they can be together.
Blackthons are also , in old western myths/beliefs, protects other from the ghoul, from the charming fae that will make people pine for them to death. Instead, Aspros himself is the charming fae, and Defteors pines for them even beyond grave. To be fair, at that fight with Youma, Aspros does love him back, but you get the idea.
Thorns is also affiliated with difficulities ahead, that is, the difficulties of the twins had to face to simply stay together with each other, and the lengths of their war crimes they did for that. (no, Defteros isn't innocent. He did used Dohko to lure out Aspros)
Other than difficulties and obstacles, the blackthorn also represent desolation. Defteros ' intereaction with other people was certainly rather minimum. Aa for the part of the word thorns meaning removing all the other unfit, useless and harmful vegetation, it can also be translated to Aspros' meritocratic mindset to remove the weak or those who can harm him .
Other than the part where it represent desolation, it's abundant with fruit,s and yet the fruits are toxic. With Aspros as well Defteros, it represent their apathy to the world as much it is to their unhealthy obsession with each other, that they have so much power to lay waste on the world with their skills, should they ever wish for it, and the part they are stepping on bodies to get into each other's pants.
As you can see from the above images, the belief about thorns is mixed up. From that explanation about beliefs regarding blackthorns, there are mentions of it symbolizes bad luck as much it symbolized good luck, just like the discord of who was the lucky and cursed twins between the two of aspros and defteros.
鏡火 , which means mirror fire , We know later Aspros will get to use Defteros' magma in his fight against Youma, which fits his own passionate, volatile, crazy personality better, as he too, reflection of Defteros, that they mutually reflect each other, like when you have endless reflection when you put two mirrors together. and the other phrase, 狂火 , crazy fire, also fits this.
Saint Seiya takes place in Greece, and the twins are also Grecian. There is a famous Grecian story about unreachable reflection, that is relatable to the previously mentioned kyoka suigetsu, the story of Narcissus.
As with many mythology, there are many versions, but long story short, someone else fell for Narcissus for his beauty, he rejects them, they prayed to the gods to punish him, and the gods punish Narcissus by making him fell in love with himself, with his own reflection on a pond, and he either dies by drowning into a pond or dies out of passion/frustration that his reflection will never love him back, burned by passion, which is , again, related to the previously mentioned crazy/mirror fire, and then the place where he died left a flower , from where he died because of his reflection, related to the mirror flower.
Narcissus meet his end BECAUSE he's , well a narcissist, to fell in love with his own reflection, but Aspros is cursed by Youma INTO a narcissist, that he becomes so delusional and see Defteros as merely a mirror that reflects him , that he is forced to believe the love he felt is for himself and not for Defteros as his own person, and this delusional state is what makes Aspros meet his end, despite he starts out loving Defteros, unlike Narcissus who starts out loving himself from the get go.
When it comes to fairytale, the most famous one that involves mirror/reflection has to be snow WHITE. Again, Aspros literally means white. But he's not Snow White , he's Beautiful Queen. Again, as Aspros see Defteros as his mirror, therefore, Defteros is the magic mirror to Aspros' Beautiful Queen, who always believed and tell to his face he's the best, and thus it makes Aspros himself want to be the best more, more beautiful, more intelligent/knowledgeable, more powerful, to be the best in everything, because his "mirror" feeds his ego.
The Grimm Brother's version have the Beautiful Queen died from dancing to exhaustion as Snow White made her wear red hot iron shoes , which can be translated the queen died with a bang, to die from exhaustion from dancing. Aspros definitely didn't die from calmly lie on the bed, he aggressively fights back against whatever thrown into him until his death, dancing on the stage until he dies, as to speak. The way his dying scene looks rather aesthetic (especially in Defteros' eyes) cue on this. this art also makes him look like he's dancing. Ballet in particular, with all the tip-toeing.
Tumblr media
The Disney version of Beautiful Queen also have a novel written from her perspective, that her father's rejection of her efforts is also key part why she's so hardworking, the more he rejects her, the more she works hard. Similarly , Sage raised the twins like his sons, not just Manigoldo, and Aspros is so upset with his rejection of not naming him Pope and is even more motivated to work hard, even in the illegal/evil ways. Like Beautiful Queen's attempt to assassinate Snow White turns out to be meaningles, Aspros' attempt to assassinate Sage also turns out to be meaningless, that his hardwork, all in all, is useless, he wouldn't get the validation he so yearned for. And again, like Beautiful Queen did not realize her obsession to be Fairest of Them All only turns her into a ugly old woman instead, a proper reflection of her inner monstrosity, Aspros too, never realized his ambition have morphed into some kind of evil abomination, thinking it's simply part of his journey to make his identity. to symbolize this, look on the illust with the rose blooms. His cape torn, the rose wilts. And yet, he pose oh so cockily, unaware of his fall from grace, why? because his "mirror" is Defteros who always sang praise to him.
Despite his roguish looks, Defteros is the voice of reason, when Aspros, despite his elegant body language and academical intellect, ultimately is unhinged beast that stop at nothing for his own goal. They are opposite of each other as much they are opposite of themselves, mirroring each other.
Albafica's rose motif is focused on the petals. Albafica thinks of himself as a monster. Therefore, Albafica references Beauty and the Beast, that despite people think of him as Beauty, he thinks of himself as Beast, and he can only come to peace as he makes peace with himself, with the one bloom that he have to take care in the end.
Meanwhile, Aspros' rose motif is focused on the thorns. There is a lot of focus on the thorns within Sleeping Beauty, that the original German name is Dornröschen , which translates into little briar rose, and the Japanese name is ibarahime, literally thorn princess. That the roses blooms all over the place, surrounding the castle unnaturally, blooming crazily to keep the princess away from the world. Defteros always believed , despite all the abuse he gets to Aspros, the Aspros he loved, whom he refer as big brother , is still there "asleep" deep inside his mental world, just like the prince believed Sleeping Beauty is still there, asleep. The scene where Aspros' hair gets to be blue again is when he "wakes up" , that he finds peace when he "wakes up" and get to be Defteros again. There was
youtube
this song where a princess loves it when knights try to save her... only for her to reveal she's, in fact, a dragon, that is usually the monsters the knight slay and are obstacles to the way into the princess. (tho you can see she has dragon tail and claws from the illust) . Not only he was cursed by Youma, Aspros also casts Genroumaouken to himself, therefore, like that song, Aspros is the "princess that needs to be saved" as much he's the "evll witch/ferocious dragon" that keep the "princess" away from the world himself.
If Aspros is mix of Snow White and Sleeping Beauty, then Defteros is Cinderella. The "cinder" from cinderella comes from cinder, ash, as she's loaded with ash as she spend her time in the kitchen. Defteros spend his time in a volcano, he must have loads of volcanic ash on him. The most memorable part of Cinderella is how the stepsisters, in some versions are her full, blood sisters bulied her, and you know how Aspros bullied Defteros, that the stepsistes painted themselves as rich nobles when they dresses Cinderella in rags, and there's something that makes Aspros somehow looks more classy and elegant when Defteros is more ragged. Also, Defteros only get to be Gemini in short time, just like Cinderella's time to dance in the ball is limited.
Aspros is strongly tied with roses, but despite they are used as symbol of strength, they are actually frail, that any change to surrounding, be it humidity, water in soil, soil nutrient content, sunlight strongnrss etc and it's ruined. Despite hia determination, slight poke at Aspros' core belief absolutely wrecks him, it's why he' so crazy,he's that volatile and easily shaken.
When Defteros, people usually tie magma with fire. but it's actually molten rock, of earth element, and magma is solid once it cools. Once Defteros actually use logic and cools down, his resolve to " save " Aspros is very solid. Also, as much fire can burn the roses, molten magma contain nutrients for plants, he can be the flowerbed for the roses to grow. Which is what Defteros aims to be, to be Aspros's support.
Defteros' first appearance have him piling up the weak and states that only the strong remains. The more you read, you know Defteros himself doesn't believe it (he believed love will prevail instead) , the social darwinism is actually Aspros' mindset , which can be traced back to his flower motif. Often, flower is a symbolism on how only the healthy/strong/beautiful are the desired ones and the rest are purged, just like plucking wilting flowers from a flower crown to make the flower wreath look good or pruning unnecessary branches so that the remaining branches will grow better with focused nutrients.
Furthermore, there is japanese belief of "mono no aware", the belief that something is beautiful precisely for it's ephemeral. The fact that Aspros spat on Youma's face human life is beautiful precisely for they are short, is comparable to his flower motif, that flowers bloom to their best, ephemerally and yet memorable, beautiful precisely for take long to bloom as much one day they will wilt.
Tumblr media
They also mentioned light and darkness a lot, and while Aspros is the one under the spotlight and Defteros is the one in the shadows, the positivity implication of the elements is inverted. Aspros is the light, but while typically the light is portrayed as something positive in fiction, not so with Aspros. he is meant to represent the harmful side of light, overly radiant light that blinds (like how Degel actually got his sight become bad bc of light refraction), UV rays, or JRPG beam spam attacks, furthermore Aspros is a transparent person who is bad at lying and most of times voices his thoughts and feelings, but it's clear his honesty is on apathetic degree where he doesn't care about what others says about what he says or do, when Defteros is the opposite, if Aspros is the harmful light, Defteros is the protective darkness, just like the shadows of large tree that protects againt the hot sunlight or a sunglasses. And while it's ttue he's the bottler twin who holds secrets and is the better manipulator, his endgame goal isn't malicious.
Tumblr media
Furthermore, in the manga Card Captor Sakura, Dark and Light are, having cosmic theme as can be seen from the image above, and both the strongest cards in the deck individually, but they must be used together. Aspros Defteros both, by being Gemini, is the strongest Gold Saint each, perhaps even just one of them is stronger than Saga, and it's clear you have to keep both on your side, elsewhere they will join other side who allows them to be together, or as Aspros said it himself, they are at their strongest when they are together, they are meant to fight together, as halves of each other, using/only having one on your side will have a rather notable backlash. Like Aspros make it clear he wouldn't help Shion and Dohko were Defteros didn't ask him to, and Defteros didn't join the holy war until Aspros does.
Also, Teshirogi confirms she listened to Cold Rain ( yknow the MDZS ost one) while writing them, the gemini twins. We see that chapter in Defteros gaiden that set in the middle of the rain. Rain nourishes the rose and douses the magma, and in that scene we see optimistic Aspros and pessmistic Defteros, so yeah

Random-Mailbox's Favorite Sailor Moon Fics - Week 39 - Missing Scenes Part I
Tumblr media
This week’s post is for the amazing @riverlethe, since today is her birthday! 🍰❤️🎂🎉🎊💐
Following one-shots are fandom’s way to fill in the blanks in both Anime and Manga, giving our characters much needed closure and depth. It was hard to decide what to include, so @goddessalthena suggested I do this as Part I, which will allow me to do another post down the road with more (similar to what I did with Christmas stories).
Also, don't forget to check out the prompts for @usamamoweek2023!
As always, my apologies in advance for spoiling some of these for you (Fic Titles are linked to either FFN or AO3 entries).
A Nightmare Between Them - Sweetsugarines
This one-shot gives us a glimpse into the mental state that Usagi was in post-Black Moon and Nehelenia battles.
Love Breeds Insanity - @angelmoongirl
Usagi absolutely refused to cancel or postpone her first date with Mamoru since the defeat of Galaxia. No matter how terrible she might be starting to feel or what her friends are trying to tell her.
The Aftermath - sailor-elsa
This is the darkest story of the bunch, with Usagi trying and almost failing to handle the aftereffects of the battle with Pharoah 90.
ER Epiphany - @uglygreenjacket
Mamoru’s work-shift gets interrupted by a youma in the ER. Who will step in to help if he is not able to transform without someone noticing?
All's Fair in Love and Birthdays - @uglygreenjacket
Another awesome one-shot that fills in the gap after the birthday episode. Mamoru and Usagi actually get to discuss what happened that day and what it meant to both of them. With Mamoru not playing very fair 😏
These Games We Play: Chapter 11: From Silk to Cotton - @allyunabridged
This one-shot takes place in Sailor Moon R, after Usagi gets rescued from Prince Dimande and before returning to the past. With King Endymion helping her take baby steps towards getting over the ordeal.
Day 2: Item - @tinacentury
Set at the start of the 3rd season of the Anime, this one-shot fills in the gaps on what went on in Mamoru’s head when Usagi wasn’t able to transform.
this little brook of life - Tosca1390
Set between Anime’s R and S seasons, Usagi and Mamoru grapple with the weight of responsibilities and lack of alone time, as Chibi-Usa re-appears in their lives.
Miscellaneous Works: Short Stories That Tumbled From Tumblr: Chapter 6: Oneiromancy - @floraone
Set at the end of the break-up arc in the Anime, Usagi gets to see more of the nightmares that Mamoru have been dealing with and understands why he can't let go of them.

Youma Chibi - 003. Furau
That's right, not waiting another three years to draw another youma chibi! Furau is third in the collection from episode 3 where Jadeite used his radio personality to have women call in and talk about their love lives. In return these women would receive purple flower pins that would steal their energy.
Unfortunately Furau doesn't have a super unique design, so I spent some extra time texturing her dress and hair, which was honestly great as that was something I wanted to practice.
