World Building - Culture and Language

Just had a random thought thinking about the Silver Millennium, ie Moon Kingdom.

When writing scenes in the past life, I wonder if I should refer it to the "Moon KINGdom" like normal present-day speech (proper English words...), or... "MOONdom" / "Moon QUEENdom"?

Was world-building even more for the past life lore and I was pulling in muses/inspiration from video games. In the Horizon series, thinking about how the Carja's kingdom is called the "Sundom"...

I kinda want to explore changing up some terminologies to help create a sense of difference in time and era. lol

Also, you know how both Moon and Earth have a proper name? Silver Millennium (Moon Kingdom) and the Golden Kingdom & Elysion as the capital? I kinda want to make fancy names for the other planet kingdoms too.

Like Silver Millennium sounds sooooo fancy and nice especially when it's two English words together to make a proper noun for Japanese people, but you're just slapping a colour and a word that means time together because these folks have a long life span?

What if Mercury's is something silly like Agua Machina for water element and machinery/technology prowess? LMAO

(Shit I'm getting more and more serious considering writing a past life story for EoT.)

Happy Birthday Hino Rei!

I rarely work ahead enough to do any celebratory illustration, and I only memorized Rei, Minako and Usagi's birthdays somehow in my time loving PGSM. lol But working on all the PGSM 20th anniversary posts back in October 2023, and resuming fanfic writing really rekindled how much I love the grumpy lesbian that the live-action gave us.

Going on the themes of PGSM appreciation for the 20th anniversary, I thought I'd compile a list of my fave/memorable character analyses I've done on Rei in my liveblog sessions so far. (I don't want to just reblog them coz then I'm just spamming followers. lol)

You try to write a scene set in the past life, and your brain over complicates it by trying to world build for all the past life kingdoms, and now you wonder if you should write a prequel about the past life? 😂🙈

At this point I have as much notes on the kingdoms as I do for my EoT plot.

New(?) spam or a scam on Tumblr

I engaged them in conversation and it seems like it’s a real person behind it. I challenged them that their blog is practically brand new, and doesn’t have a profile pic. (They do after I challenged them that.)

When I asked what photo they are talking about, they reply saying they don’t see any photos on my blog and wanted me to send them some for them to see. So someone wants a photo of me - the person behind an anonymous blog/blog with an online handle. Like wtf. I thought they were asking about one of my fanart on my side blog and just expressed it weirdly, so I was curious what they’d say.

I don’t release photos of myself on Tumblr . I can’t even imagine what kind of things they’d do with my photo.

Asking a blog where the person doesn’t release their name or personal photo for their personal info? Pfttttttt.

They’ve been marked as spam and blocked. 😙

SilMil AU Mars's power awakening (pre-transformation)

As opposed to the present-day Sailor Senshi team being able to transform as soon as they receive their transformation items, I envision the past-life Senshi needing to train loads to hone their powers, so all of them can use their elementary powers to a limited extent even without transformation.

I'm very excited with how this piece turned out, especially with how the bow and the flames looked. I actually wasn't too sure where I was going with this when I started, it's like Mars was guiding me along the way to make sure this looks as epic as I could make it. XD

I toyed with the background quite a bit and was torn between the gradient black-to-red background or a plain gray background. The gradient with the flame speckles seems to give a better vibe. But a plain gray one also looked pretty cool, and I could see the different glow better from a lighter background. ✰🔥✰

I had to add the Senshi transformation item/the communicator-looking gadget on Mars's wrist. I TOTALLY forgot about that in my initial wip post, and had to go through episodes of PGSM to find the best screenshot for a good reference. lol

Now let's see if I can keep this up with Venus, Mercury and Jupiter's. :P

Omg omg omg omg I finished the coloured version and I feel so fucking proud of myself I kinda want to just post it. But I had planned to only post the coloured version as a full set once I have Venus, Jupiter and Mercury done (which I haven't started but have the idea planned already.) Also... I don't know how long it'll take me to finish the whole set... (Or given my track record with wips, if I WILL finish it or not...)

SAILOR SENSHI 20TH ANNIVERSARY ALUMNI REUNION - FANSUBBED

EDIT on Jan 3rd: SORRY. I couldn't stand how many mistakes I see in my edit despite multiple checks I've done before Jan 1st... I ended up reuploading the videos instead. Can't guarantee it's perfect now, but it's much better (from the creator's perspective.) Anyone who reblogged before Jan 3rd will have the old link that's now broken.

This is the TV version, aired on CBC in Japan on December 25th, 2023.

Due to YouTube's upload length limit, the show has been split into 3 parts based on the provided commercial breaks. The videos are unlisted on YouTube, so cannot be searched, instead only accessed by the proper web link.

Some notes & disclaimer:

1. I’m not a fluent Japanese speaker, but I do know Hiragana, Katakana, basic Japanese grammar and kanji, and a few good tools to use for translation. All’s to say, all mistakes are mine. Sorry if there’s any!

2. I’m also not a professional translator. Due to the grammar differences between Japanese and English, some sentences will sound awkward in English for the conversation to make sense.

3. This really was a casual chat for the ladies, so they kept talking over each other. I tried to highlight all the chit-chats with colour-coded subtitles matching their Senshi colours. Because of this I tried different formatting and decided on the layout you see now, even if it's still a bit messy, and some subtitles are quite fast-paced. Sorry if it doesn't look good or is tough to read. :(

4. The character “会”(kai) in “戦士会” (senshi-kai) can be translated into: - “Club”, a noun for group; - “Meetup” or “reunion”, a noun and synonym for “event”. Depending on context, you will see “戦士会” (senshi-kai) translated into “Senshi Club” or “Senshi Reunion.”

I will be working on a subtitled version of Miyuu's behind-the-scene video of this program. (JAN 7th EDIT: The subbed version is available here!)

A Director's Cut version will be made available in Japan on Jan 9, 2024. I'll keep an eye out if there's a copy floating around. If there's any difference in that version, I'll also make a subtitled version for sharing as well. If there are any translation mistakes I've made in this current round of subtitling, I'll also take the chance to rectify them in the new version.
