SAME IN INGLIS - Mic Mac

Yes Hello you ask and you shall receive: a series where I take one song and explain some of the slang or any references that might get lost in an ordinary translation. Usually I or any of the other mains doing translations don't want to make posts too long by adding footnote after footnote, so some stuff might be lost intentionally. I'm using this series to dedicate my time specifically for all the stuff I usually don't comment on. I'm gonna include everything in here, even some of the "obvious" things. So up first by popular request:

MIC MAC

So firstly, the name. Mic Mac was a Finnish youth clothing brand between 1972 and 2013. They were particularly known for their provocative and shocking ways of advertising especially in the 1980s. They had their own brand of jeans that were extremely popular, but they also sold other brands in their stores like Levi’s or Wranglers. From what I know they only had stores in Helsinki/Uusimaa but correct me if I’m wrong on that. For a lot of us Mic Mac is a very 80s/90s brand, their peak was during those times as well.

Jere has a lot of other interests that are very reminiscent of a childhood in the 90s. Even the name Jere was very popular in the 90s, it’s the equivalent of Justin or Jake in english. In this song he talks about Pokemon cards, which I’m sure a lot of 90s kids will remember being very popular. In the same breath he mentions Habbo Hotel, a Finnish online virtual world game and chat room founded in 2000 that’s still active today. in Viulunkieli he references Bomfunk MC’s Freestyler which is like the most 90s song in this country you could play. He also grew up listening to other artists that had their peak in the 90s/early 2000s, like Eminem or Finteligens. My point here is that it’s clear he has a lot of fond memories of his childhood, and he lets them influence a lot of his music and lyrics. Mic Mac in particular feels almost like an ode to that time in his life and in Finland generally.

Now, to the actual lyrics. I’m gonna copy paste the entire verse/chorus and highlight slang/spoken Finnish, and I’m gonna take a few particular words from each part and explain them. The cursive words are just slang with a parenthesis of “official Finnish” next to them, and the bolded ones I’m gonna explain.

Rasavilli is a word derived from swedish (rasvill), which is extremely common especially for Finnish slang. It means an unruly, mischievous child, willfully causing chaos

Meno epäterve I decided to highlight this because the word meno in this context is used in a colloquial way to describe the atmosphere of something, so for this instance the vibe was crazy or something. Officially it means an errand or plans, or financial expenses, but a lot of us also use it as a descriptive word

Morkkis I’m sure you remember from his song Morgan, but it just means being badly hungover and having anxiety. It can though also be used to just in general feel regretful over something in the past

The chorus actually doesn’t have any spoken/slang Finnish except one word from what I can tell so I’m not gonna include all of it here

Fätti I chose to highlight this just to show that often we’ll take English words and add ä/ö to them to make them sound Finnish. Like here the word is Fat, but because the -A sounds like our -Ä we just type it out like that. Another example of this would be how a lot of the times you’ll see the word rap written as räp, even though officially we just use the english word (although as a verb I think even officially it is räpätä with the -Ä)

Jarkko Ruutu A Finnish former ice hockey player who went all the way to the NHL, who was known for his particularly aggressive and rough playing

Pojan nassikat Nassikka is an older, almost colloquial descriptive way to refer to a little boy

Frendi/faija/pöllityt These are all slang words derived straight from other languages which we do a lot, especially with swedish or russian. Frendi comes from the english friend, faija comes from the swedish far (father), and pölliä possible comes from the swedish bälla (to steal/use)

Astella heikoilla jäillä So this isn’t like fully clear BUT there’s this children’s TV infomercial that has run every autumn/winter since 1986 and probably does today as well, that warns children not to walk on ice as it can be deceptively weak. It is ingrained into everyone's memories because the bear that falls into the ice looks so miserable and terrifying as he says “Watch out for weak ice”, and since this song is about his childhood I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say it’s a reference to that

Tuusannuuskaks This is a colloquial term used to describe something shattering into a thousand pieces. I honestly couldn’t find the full origin for this but most likely it comes from the swedish word tusen (thousand) and the rest is beyond me lol (except that nuuska means snuff so maybe it’s about snuff being easily spread in a thousand places)

Ja ku mentiin liian pitkälle läppien kaa (kanssa)

Istuttiin jälki-istunnossa Mic Macci jätkien kaa

Läppä means a joke, but the official word for it is vitsi. I’m not sure of the origin but some researcher said it comes from the swedish word läpp, meaning lip, and heittää huulta is a way to say someone is joking (Throwing lip), and in a colloquial way you say heittää läppää, which means the same thing

Jätkä means a young man, either in a neutral way or depending on the context a condescending way. The english equivalent would be a guy. It’s also what we call the card Jack in a card deck lol

So that’s finally all the lyrics done. As you can see from the cursive words, when comparing them to the “correct” or official word, we often just get rid of the last letter in a word when speaking. We really are a lot like the french in that way, we tie words in a sentence together by matching vowels with consonants, get rid of vowels if they seem to obstruct the flow of a word or just change a word radically to make something easier to say quickly (like minussa -> mussa).

I hope at least some of this was interesting, I’m very passionate about slang and word origins and there’s a lot of Käärijä songs that have even more crazier slang that I can’t wait to get into (like Alaks Olee or Koppi Tules). Until then, hope this was informative/entertaining <3

I love all the different names given to bats in various languages. In German they're flutter mice, in Estonian it's leather mice, the Finnish word lepakko basically means "the small one that flaps" and we call Pteropus vampyrus a "big flying dog"

#well i looked it up and apparently the word nychthemeron exists????#but like. i have never ever seen anyone use that word before in any context #so then you have the alternatives that ppl actually use: day; day and night; 24 hours #but 24 hours and day and night both have the issue of Not Being One Word #whereas day can sometimes mean less than 24 hours #therefore there is no good way to translate vuorokausi exactly #(altho i must say that in finnish slang ppl do often use the word päivä (=day) as a synonym for vuorokausi)#language tag #yeah i'm having Thoughts abt language again what's new

one quirky TV show for @jupiter-balls coming right up 😌

so it's a Friends-inspired drama-comedy in which everyone pictured above all live in the sam building

the main character Robin (Robbari to his friends) is a single guy but not-so-ready to mingle because he is (read: pretends to be) a Loner™ 🙄

Keira is his half-sister and roommate and about this 🤏 close to throwing him out if the doesn't stop whining about not finding anyone ever 😑

Benjamin is his best friend who's trying so hard to hook Robin up with someone but he's hopeless, he won't settle for anyone!?! (*Keira nods in understandment*)

(Benjamin also had an unrequited crush on Robin when they were younger but we don't find out until season 3)

Benjamin himself is trying to get together with the guy in the hat, but somehow finds himself in bed with the long-haired dude instead 😳 (they go on and off throughout the show (6 seasons!))

In the beginning of the season, the three guys on the left move next door to Keira and Robbari 👀

Cue a completely unnecessary love-triangle between Keira and the two blonds (until the blond dudes realise they're more into each other and Keira realises she's more into girls)

(Yes, good news for y'all! Everyone's queer! 🥰)

...Robin's in denial though, until he stumbles into Johannes. It takes one (1) charming smile and one (1) compliment at Robin's mismatched shoes until Robin's all 🥴 in front of the guy

Not that he's still going to admit he's feeling anything until way into season 2 😤 A stubborn puppy, this one 🙄

Lxandra is the quirky, a little weird neighbour who no one really knows but who you always end up in the same elevator with and who always has a cryptic aphorism for any situation (they're often included in episode titles and actually make perfect sense eventually)

Käärijä-Jere owns a fishy bar downstairs, although the mafia guys (Portion Boys) only let him think he's the one running it 🤭

In other words, poor Käärijä-Jere is completely clueless there's shady business happening right under his nose every day. He himself only pretends to be a tough guy (when in reality he takes his half-blind grandmother to church every Sunday)

And whereas the Portion Boys let Käärijä-Jere think he is somehow in charge at the bar, the lady in their group lets the guys think they're in charge 😌 Whatever keeps them from going at each other's throats half the time...

So what happens when our protagonist realises that both his sister and his BFF are meddling with whatever the nice but suspicious guys downstairs are onto? How and when will he FINALLY give into his desires? 👀

i feel bad for ppl who have to learn finnish for many reasons but today i realized that the word "tuolla" can mean both "over there" and "with that"

for example

"Missä sun auto on?" "Tuolla" *points at car*

"Miten tulit tänään töihin?" "Tuolla" *points at car*

i dont know enough to explain how the words are made up but IF ANYONE FEELS BAD ABOUT NOT LEARNING FINNISH IT IS FINE SOMETIMES ITS JUST CONFUSING

I’m going in-depth on the names we have thus far. Calorum is the setting that has some of the cleverest wordplay ever, period, and I want to know EVERYTHING about our new guys!!!!!

let’s get this one out of the way

Colin Provlone (Zac Oyama) - Provolone is a kind of cheese. Colin is a name of Irish/Scottish origin. It’s nice to have one simple one.

Bishop Raphaniel Charlock (Brennan Lee Mulligan) - hmmmm are we going to get an actually Bulbian cleric/warlock this season????

Anyway, the scientific name for wild radish is Raphanus raphanistrum, so that’s probably where Raphaniel came from.

wild radish has two other names - “jointed charlock” and “white charlock”. So there we go.

Your typical red radish (as Brennan described his character to look like) is a subspecies of Raphanus raphanistrum called sativus.

but!!! even MORE interesting!!!! you know what order and family radishes are in? the order BRASSICALES in the family BRASSICACEAE!!!!! Like a certain pontifex we know of??

This could be 100% unintentional, there’s a Lot of vegetables in the family Brassicaceae, but I remain optimistic.

Lady Amangeaux Epiceé du Peche (Anjali Bhimani) - so, Fructera has always been French, natch.

She is a mango! French for mango = la mangue

Amangeaux = almonds (according to google translate, I couldn’t find this word anywhere else online, it’s extremely possible that it’s just the most French-sounding way of saying “a mango”)

Epiceé = spicy (can be used as slang for y’know. spICY)

du Peche = of peach. maybe she is of house Peach?

Karna Solara (Aabria Iyengar) - this one has me kind of stumped.

there’s the obvious karn->carn->meat connection, but she’s a chili pepper. lmk if there’s some secret vegetable lore I’m missing with ‘karna’

there’s also solar -> sun, which makes sense since the crest of Brightgarden is a big sun, and we see the DM screen this season has a big sun on it.

pLUS when I looked up scientific name for chili pepper, they come from the order Solanales in the family Solanaceae.

Thane Delissandro Katzon (Lou Wilson) -

Katzon

immediately made me think of katsudon- an egg rice bowl w pork cutlet on top.

thank you @blueaerin for your post about how this is most likely a reference to Katz’s Delicatessan, a famous deli in NYC! I never would’ve know that.

Also “katson” = Finnish for “I look” - from the verb “katsoa” meaning “to look at” or “to watch over” - probably nothing.

Delissandro - deli - deli meat

Delicatessen - the double s inspired by this?

while I was looking at Finnish stuff i found out “delissa” means “at the deli” in Finnish

Thane - y’all who read Macbeth know this one.

In Anglo-Saxon culture, It’s a title of a landowner, specifically someone who was gifted land by a king.

In Scotland, it’s a feudal lord.

There’s a connotation of military use in all of the descriptions I’ve found, so judging by the armor he’s wearing, it might be being used as a term for “commander”

Sacred and Terrible Air: Ibex translation updated to v4.0

When Group Ibex's translation went live last June, we called it version 1.0 after several months of covertly sharing an ever-updating work in progress. The updates... have not stopped. These new versions have since fixed a few whoopsies, edited stuff for flow and clarity, brought some more names in line with Disco Elysium's spelling, kept certain translation choices consistent and, of course, added footnotes. What is an ibex if not a dozen footnotes with horns on top.

Abridged errata:

the big mistake is that Maj's age in chapter 1 was accidentally changed from 5 to 4 at an early editing stage. Our sincere apologies. It is now 5 as it should be, and as is listed later on in the book

and in chapter 2, at one point it's not jumpsuit girl who turns to speak to Khan, but rather von Fersen

the place you are most likely to get shot behind is now consistently a waste disposal facility

Yet more spellings brought in line with Disco Elysium include everyone's favourite polar settlement Yelinka and cool guy Baron von Kikkenberg

As per the inside cover lists, the nominative form of Viderundil is in fact Viderunt, not Viderund

ever wondered about those pesky diamat glasses? There is now a comprehensive footnote for that

you may have noticed that Khan is singing a Beatles song, but did you catch that lyrics by famous punk Estonian band Vennaskond were in Tereesz's mind as he thought of Frantiček the Brave? Checked the full context of that suruese rock? There's footnotes for that too

Description: Not exactly literal golden retriever energy but... close enough. A ray of sunshine, playful, easygoing, happy-go-lucky and a voracious eater (she eats everything), loves playing in puddles and has a special love for chewed up tennis balls.

The estranged first love / soulmates.

Your first-love (or platonic soulmate), from junior college. You’d not kept in touch, and now, they’re ridiculously successful. But, according to your intel, still…single.

Nationality & race: Chinese Singaporean

Occupation: Public prosecutor

Description:

Extremely intelligent, with a sharp, cutting wit.

Ambitious, determined, and a bit cynical / jaded.

Formal, a little bit stiff, and always impeccably dressed.

Tan, athletic, with an undeniable swagger to their walk. Has a penchant for sleeveless muscle tees. Good with their hands (and... possibly other parts of their body).

Adventurous, resilient, unflinchingly honest, and uncompromisingly true to themselves / the people they love.

Loves the outdoors (and constant motion), music (especially rock, reggae and soul), dancing, soccer, nature/plants (including gardening).

Oh and on the subject of names of Helsinki:

Helsinki is the literal official name of the city. Most normal people call it that.

"Stadi" is what the city was called in old Helsinki slang, the name coming from the Swedish word stad, meaning "city." Used by old Helsinki natives like my dad and cringelords like me who grew up outside of Helsinki and moved there later in life and are now compensating for it. Has a big vibe of "Helsinki is the city, and the only city."

"Iso kirkko," or "da big church." A form of metonymy where a part is used in place of the whole: when people say they're going to "the big church" (the Doom Church in Helsinki. Actually a rather small church. Huge relative to the average size of churches in Finland.) they don't mean they're going to the church itself but the town surrounding it. A somewhat tongue-in-cheek way of referring to the city.

"Hesa" is what the city is known as colloquially outside of Helsinki. While it's very normal it will mark you as a bumpkin it you ever use it in Helsinki.

"Mega Hese 1" (the number 1 is often read as "Yksi" like normal but can also be read as the dialectal "Ykkönen") is an extremely online and ironic way to refer to Helsinki, modeled after Mega City One from Judge Dredd. "Hese" is actually the colloquial name of the Finnish burger joint Hesburger and using it to refer to Helsinki is an easy way to piss off Helsinki natives. This one owns so much I fucking love it.

Käärijä's Helsinki live concert, mid-speeches translated

Okay as promised I will try to translate Käärijä's speeches of his concert. I am doing this as training for my English exam so I will make mistakes. Also Käärijä speaks in Finnish spoken language, and it has more slang than written language. So the translations are a polished versions of his speeches. Please correct me on my grammar mistakes! :D

(The guy in question appears, and Käärijä speaks to him. The guy wears a monkey suit)

"It makes me glad. (He said "vetää hiljaiseksi" which means "pulls me silent", but idk how to translate that well)."

"People are wearing green and some people don't have clothes at all on them, but that is fine."

"Well yes. So I actually went to Eurovision, I don't know if anyone watched it, but-"

(cheering)

"Yes that was, that was like a basic gig in Nivala. Yeah we did that out of the way and- now we are here. So I appreciate all of you so so so so much."

"This is not self-evident, so many people want to see this circus monkey, I don't- I mean I am thinking what is wrong with you all, but it's nice that you are all here. Yeah just kidding.

"I also want to thank you for everything, you guys have made this thing, not me I just made the song. I didn't do much more than that. You guys created this around Käärijä- well I am not sure what sort of chaos this is, but you guys are guilty for that. Thank you for that."

(Crowd cheers)

"And then I would like to respect this guy called Antti Tuisku. " (Antti is a very popular and beloved Finnish singer).

"Sadly I need to tell you that Antti had much more better things to do, than come to Käärijä's concert."

"He is somewhere in Spain, with an oiled chest. Macarena- or what is that song."

"But we are trying to give our respects to him. He is apparently quitting his career, good for me, he made me some room. Thank you Antti."

"Antti was Finland's best live performer, notice "he was". Who is it now? I do not know."

"But- I was thinking we could do it for you guys (his and Antti's song "Auto jää".) We can respect Antti and- this sounds like a funeral speech. He is alive. And is doing well. Is doing better than ever."

"I don't know, this makes me speechless. (the sound is not working) And now my headset is starting to get broken. I am absolutely messed up over here. I am not drunk but otherwise I'm messed up."

"There is- hey (points into the crowd) you put me messages about that hat, didn't you? Yes. Think about this, there is this one person who made a- I don't know how many weeks or months it took you to make that- that hat. Hat. First they were flexing me like "Look at this hat" and I was like oh that is kinda cool "Do you want this?".

(The person starts to point at the hat and ask does Käärijä want it)

"Why would I take it, it's yours!! Dear lord- no I can't- maybe later."

(Crowd cheers)

"Yes we will continue- I am trying to look if there are any- all of you are my friends. And that much I want to say that welcome to Käärijä's family."

"Even if you don't want to, now you are a part of Käärijä's family, because you came here. You have sold your souls to Käärijä.

"And I hope everyone respects each other here, because otherwise I will come there and no one will have fun anymore."

"Because there are small family members here, so I hope they too will see something. So if there is a little Lassi somewhere in there, then take that Lassi and carry him so he could see too. Or then they can come here 10 years later."

"Käärijä's concerts rarely have a back row, but now there is one."

"That is very nice, welcome here. I hope you can see something, I'm kinda a tiny short guy."

"People have been talking about how tall Käärijä is. So you know what?"

(People raise their hands, one guy is jumping, Käärijä points at him)

"This guy stole the whole show."

"Yes well- yes no wonder Kärtsäri is not driving around with a fancy car when this one guy takes it all (the money)."

(The guy takes his wig off)

"I assumed at first of course that "Yess there are families here". And nobody came. Let's just say, the smallest family members welcome here, and I hope parents know where they just took their kids. And I try to behave accordingly, today. This is the last time."

(Crowd cheers)

(A little kid in a pink dress comes next to Käärijä)

(People give him stuff. Käärijä leads the kid back)

(Käärijä goes back to the stage)

"I'll go back to the stage, I didn't go back home like some of you thought."

(Someone in the crowd shouts something, I am not sure what)

"It will come, it will come. It is the next one actually."

"Let's see. First time ever I had to do a set list. Because there are like 16 songs here."

"I am not sure what these songs are, but here they are."

"What are these songs? Do we even have time to do these all? Hey, before Urheilujätkä, there will be Hirttää kiinni."

"Kärtsäri's concert haven't had this kind of a feeling in a long time."

"Old man's pump is starting to fail, I hope our first aid is ready. Okay no that was a joke, no need to worry."

(Watching fan signs)

"What is there? "Greetings to mom and dad" my parents? Do you have something to say to my dad? "Cha cha cha, hirttää kiinni ja Mic mac" very well... "

"Before that, I would like to ask some people- wait I need to check who I was supposed to ask here."

"Yeah my memory left in- I need to say that this journey from Liverpool- no actually from UMK to here has really been a journey of some kind. And you people have made me come through it. I must say that if people think that this kind of life is just some highlight and very cool- this is very cool yes, but there are a lot of dark sides into this."

First of all I am asking my friend, who is actually the reason why I am on music business at all, and I have learned a lot from him and he is a dear friend. (crowd cheers)

"And next I would like to ask, one friend, who we made the first Käärijä song with and my best friend. Who was with me in Liverpool as an interpreter but he didn't get to do anything cause I became so good in English. My English is kinda good nowadays."

"Yes yes mister worldwide here"

"Applause to Jesse!!!!!"

"And before all this I will go get this one shirt. Where is it? Here."

Soni: "Does anyone have lamps on their phones? Could we get those up for the next song?"

"This is very awkward to wear this shirt on. But is e here, is uncle Jaska here somewhere? Sportguy himself."
