Nolofinwean Week Day 6: Erien and Finbor
(Am I aware that Tolkien ended up leaving these two on the cutting room floor, and therefore shouldn't really count? Yes. Do I care? No.)

anyway. I’m slowly getting back to my Tolkien bs so have a random head canon ft. the Nolofinweans (and the grandkids):
rinses grapes in a bowl and strains them: Fingolfin, Finbor, Idril, Turgon
Rinses them in the bag: Fingon, Anairë, Maeglin, Gil-Galad, Argon
Just eats them: Aredhel
hates Grapes: Erien

Finbor & Erien weren't Fingon's kids in the same draft Gil-Galad was Fingon's kid.
Just sayin. (Some fics have all 3 as his kids when he didn't have 3 kids in any version. He went from having 2, to having 1, to having 0)
I do think Finbor becoming Gil-Galad is a cool idea though, even if I personally like Gil as Orodreth’s son.

Whither Lies the Heart
The story of Ernis, wife of Fingon, and Erien, their daughter.
G, M/F, 1,000 words. [AO3]
In a late (rejected) version of the legendarium, Fingon has a son, Finbor, and a daughter, Erien. A variant of Erien was Ernis. I figured if the men can name all their sons after themselves, so can their wives!
For @finweanladiesweek
_____________________________________________________________
He captures her heart, that fair Noldorin prince who brought the sunlight in his hair and moonlight in his smile and all the host of heaven in his eyes.  Ernis’s father treats with the second-come, the ones who were left behind.  It awes her, their fortitude.  She finds herself smiling more warmly, laughing more readily, singing more sweetly when she thinks he is watching.
Ernis never grows to love the stone towers of her husband’s people.  She endures it for love of him - indeed, she would endure much for he whom she had chosen - but often her feet lead her to wander once again in the open hills and the sparse forests of her home.
Even after she bears him children, her desire to wander cannot be appeased but by the doing.  With Erien upon her back, her feet take her to the very shores of the sea, the taste of salt on her tongue and sand between her toes.  She visits the home of her husband’s kin and they are eager to meet their new niece.
With Finbor still suckling at her breast, she wades into the pools of Ivrin and drinks deep of its waters of renewal.  There she bathes, she and her children, and tells the stories of their mother’s people from long before the sun rose.
She knows he worries, but Barad Eithel is but a waypoint on her endless journey, and while she strays far across the land, she never remains gone for more than a season or two, always returning to his arms and his bed. Until she can once again no longer bear to be confined and the wind calls her to come and follow.
No matter how she loves him, she can never be fully happy but to be on her way.  Drawing her scarf tight about her head, drawing her satchel across her shoulder, she follows the clouds and dances in the rivers.
In time, Finbor no longer follows, finding delight in the skills of the Noldor, their art of swords and strategies.  But Erien is ever at her mother’s side, walking the long leagues under starlight.
Erien has yet little thought of love or marriage.  She has little thought of much beyond the uses of the plants and the movement of the stars, the coming and going of the birds with the seasons and the secret names of the hills over which she roams.  So it might have continued but for a Spring when more fair princes of the Noldor come to visit.
As her family gathers, her father puts his arm around her shoulder and smiles proudly.  “May I present my daughter, Erien,” he says, and the words swell her chest and warm her heart.
She curtsies before them - these golden princes Angrod and Aegnor, the fair lady Eðellos, but it is upon Orodreth her gaze lands.
Though their fathers seem most eager for Finbor and Orodreth to become friends, whenever she is close to him they fall easily into conversation, his manner light and his laughter warm.  He speaks softly yet with a depth of feeling she cannot help but feel drawn to.  The more time she passes in his company the more she longs to remain so.
When their guests depart to return to Dorthonion, she wanders at first through the fields and forests, aimless and forlorn, until at last she cannot bear it.
“I have walked the length and breadth of Hithlum, tasted the waters of Neverast, trod the ices of Lammoth, and climbed the mountains which encompass Dor-Lómin.  But now my heart desires to see the highlands of Dorthonion, and thither I shall go.”
Fingon kisses her brow tenderly.  “Go,” he says.  “With my leave and my love.  For I have seen where your heart lies, and I am certain you have planted it in fertile soils.”
Ernis embraces her also, but she weeps, for her daughter has found her own path at last and she will no longer shadow her own.
Thus Erien sets her face to the rising sun and goes.  She crosses the Ered Wethrin, passing through Eithel Sirion where her grandfather dwells, before continuing on to the heather-filled hills and tall, fragrant pines of Dorthonion.  It is wild and strange, and despite her reason for coming she cannot but tarry at every new plant and songbird.
It is not until autumn has grown late and the snows begin to fall that she at last comes to the fortress of Ost-na-Thuin upon the northern slopes, shining tall and white, with great banners flying from its walls and ramparts.
Throughout her journey she had often turned her mind to what she would say upon her arrival, how she would win the love of Orodreth.  She constructed many pretty phrases she might use, and even some polite excuses to spare them both should it be clear that he did not share her affections.
What she never dreamed of was to be escorted into the great hall and find her father, mother, and brother all merry guests within.  So certain was Fingon of Orodreth’s feelings, they had set out shortly after she left, riding with a company across Ard-galen and coming to Ost-na-Thuin a full season ahead of her, bearing a number of gifts for his cousins, and a trunk of Erien’s things.
Both families are overjoyed when beneath the bright stars and clear skies of a long winter’s night, Erien and Orodreth are wed.
Like her mother, Erien is ill at ease staying in one place for too long.  Sometimes Orodreth accompanies her on her wanderings, and her feet carry her even as far as Ossiriand, wishing to touch each of the seven rivers which flow there.
When in the fullness of time Finduilas is swaddled and laid upon her breast, she whispers to her of all the many lands through which they will journey, the lands of her mothers who will not be tamed, who wander with the wind and drink from Ivrin.

It's not something I'm bothered by because she *is* so obscure she basically is an OC, but it is a little amusing when people tag content about Erien as "OC" or "other people's OCs" or something. She's not, technically! Tolkien mentioned her once in HoMe as the daughter of Fingon! Her name was altered from the original Ernis, and she has a brother named Finbor (who I usually interpret as Gil-galad). So, yes, I am definitely making up a bunch of stuff about her, most notably that she is a Russingon baby, but she's not technically an OC :)

ooh may i ask about the naming of feanoriel istarniel?
Oh yes, absolutely! And I'm gonna subject you to my nonsense chapter notes for this as well (under the cut).
The long short of this is that Fëanor and Nerdanel, well into the future, have made up (after Fëanor's reembodiment) and they have another child - a daughter this time - and it's a fic that surrounds the House of Fëanor (and the rest of the House of Finwë) coming together to greet her properly.
It's the most concise fic I think I've ever planned and also features mentions of a lot of my ocs - it did start it's life as me attempting to write a fic where all my House of Finwë OCs appeared in some extent.
[Fic titles found here]
Ok so here are my chapter plan because I think they're hilarious in some places (although they are not that accurate to how the chapter actually ended up most of the time):
Chapter 1 – Maedhros
:Maedhros wakes up in Fingon’s room. They have a sweet moment reminiscing about pre-darkening Valinor and the Peace in Beleriand and comment on how everything is almost perfect now except that tensions are still high and Fingon comments on the lack of Míriel. They talk about Gil, Erien and Finbor. This is ended when they talk of Erien (Aistamíriel) and Finbor’s (Quarefinwë, Elbeon) naming and Maedhros remembers that they have Nínneth’s naming ceremony that day. Fingon reminds him that they live so close to Fornalondë (once Formenos) that it does not matter if they are a little late and tells him to come back to bed:
Chapter 2 – Maglor
:Maglor wakes alone in a forest glade, travelling to Fornalondë. He can hear talking and finds Daeron and Cantasië, Daeron sitting on a rock and Cantasië wading in the stream. They are talking about Maglor and their collective group of children (Elrond and Elros, Ivárë, Eärenissë). They stop when they spot Maglor and he sits on the river bank with his legs in the water, listening to them as Daeron begins to play his pipe. He takes a moment to introspect – is this how his Grandmother felt with two people who loved her so dearly (being Indis and Finwë)? He wonders why and how she could have possibly left them behind (and also her child):
Chapter 3 – Celegorm
:Celegorm is returning from a hunt with Aredhel, Edhellos and Huan (Huan!). Aredhel talks about how well Lómion has gotten on with Celebrimbor since rebirth and Edhellos talks about meeting Hallas and Inglor properly, and reuniting with Orodreth and Finduilas. They both talk about the guilt they have for abandoning their children in some form. They part ways, Edhellos and Aredhel planning on meeting their respective families before the ceremony. Celegorm tells Huan of talking to Rávassë – Quildatiris (now Calatír) and Vercafion (now Feredir) were elsewhere – and how she had blamed him for abandoning them after finding them and giving them a home – however, it should be noted that she is the only one who keeps the original name Celegorm gave her. Huan comforts him a little – but not too much, Huan knows he’s an idiot – and they come in view of Fornalondë:
Chapter 4 - Caranthir
:Caranthir is alone with his sister, asleep in a rocking basket weaved by Díriel. He is putting the finishing touches to Nínneth’s blanket for her naming ceremony. He thinks about his own daughter’s much smaller, naming ceremonies – Nibenaes’ by Lake Helevorn; and Niphredilien’s, just him – and how much they have all grown and changed. He puts the finishing touches to the blanket and folds it carefully onto the table. He ponders momentarily on how his sister will turn out. He is then disturbed by his daughters who have come to find him as they have arrived from wherever they have been:
Chapter 5 - Curufin
:Curufin is in the forge tidying because the preparations for Nínneth’s naming ceremony remind him of Celebrimbor’s which is making him sad because his baby is all grown up now :( and he is hiding from that. Celebrimbor is the one who finds him after returning from visiting his mother and stepmother in the mountains with Maeglin (who appreciated the mining operations). They talk about how Rinwendë is doing and talk also about Maeglin and Finrod and perhaps also touch on Sauron then make their ways upstairs to finish getting ready and help Fëanor and Nerdanel welcome guests:
Chapter 6 - Amrod
:Amrod is helping Argon set up chairs. They chat about how it’s so weird that there is going to be a brand new Finwëan in this new peaceful age. They are clearly close after being the only reborn Finwëans for so long – perhaps mention the fact Amrod is a healer and Argon is a painter. They are distracted from their conversation by Maedhros appearing and asking if they had seen Nerdanel. When they say no, he leaves. Amrod mentions that this must be the first time the whole family has been in one place since the Darkening. Argon says that Míriel will not be there but that yes, even Indis will be coming. They continue laying out chairs and tables and putting out name labels, talking about different family members and who they’re excited to see. Then Curufin appears and says Nerdanel has gone missing. Cliff hanger! (but not really because this is fluffy):
Chapter 7 – Amras
:Amras talks to his sister after he was given her. Caranthir had tried to get her to stop crying but had been unsuccessful and passed her onto Amras. He complains saying that he had never been that good with babies, even Hethest’s had taken a while to warm up to him. He then talks a bit about Doron, Eirien, Tathar and Neldor, and Meril. Then he talks about Beleriand and missing his twin. He then apologises, a little roughly, for complaining but his sister has quieted and is looking up at him with bright eyes. He gets a bit sappy. Celegorm skids past the room, saying that their mother has been spotted leading a horse upon which sits a mysterious figure:
Chapter 8 – Nerdanel
:Nerdanel is talking to the mysterious figure about how her sons were when they were little. The figure is quiet but clearly attentive. She mentions how much she missed them when they were parted and the figure talks for the first time, agreeing that being apart from her son was painful for her and that she empathises. Fëanor comes out to meet her, worried, not even taking note of the woman on the horse. They banter until the woman slips from the saddle and stands next to Nerdanel. She takes down her hood to reveal – le gasp! – Míriel:
Chapter 9 – Fëanor
:Fëanor is a little bit in shock. Indis, Míriel and Finwë have a conversation within Fëanor’s study and Fëanor paces the corridor outside with Nerdanel in attendance (their kids had been banished) until they finally open the door. Finwë says something vague and comforting; Indis says nothing but gently pats his shoulder/cheek; and then Míriel comes out. Her lovers hover before deciding to give her space with her son. They talk and it ends with a bell ringing out for sundown and their walk down the place where the ceremony is taking place:
Chapter 10 – Vanimeldë
:Epilogue of sorts with a little Nínneth. Short and sweet where she talks about the names she was given and how big her family is and how loved she is – or something similarly sweet and sappy:
So yeah! Lots happening, mostly fluff and introspection but a bit of drama because what would the House of Finwë be without it?
(I also don't show the party but I imagine there are like three fights, someone cries, there's a lot of drunk arguing/making out - it's chaos, no-one can control anyone)
And here are a few snippets:
1.
“I’m sorry, I was just…thinking…”
“About?”
Maedhros shrugs as best he can. “Mostly us. I’m glad we have time now.”
“All the time in the world,” Fingon agrees. “Until we have to get to your sister’s Naming.”
“Shit!” Maedhros begins to push himself up. “That’s today, isn’t it?”
Fingon makes a sound of complaint as Maedhros swings himself out of bed, and makes a futile attempt to pull him back. “Come back to bed Russo, or I swear I will make you!”
“Not today Órenya, today we have things to do!”
“Ugh, you’re impossible!”
Maedhros can hear a disgruntled flump of pillows behind him as he searches his dresser for the outfit he thought he laid out the night before.
“Finno, did you see where I put my tunic?”
When there’s no answer, Maedhros turns around to see Fingon lying in the bed with his arms crossed and looking very pointedly out the window.
“Oh Finno,” Maedhros says, sitting on the edge of the bed. “Don’t be immature.”
“I’m not being ‘immature’,” Fingon mutters but he still doesn’t look over, “I just think that if you loved me, you wouldn’t leave so early.”
“Melanya, we have all of eternity to sleep in. Just not today.”
Silence.
“Look, Quarefinwë and Aistamíriel are coming this morning and we would have to get out of bed for them anyway.”
This also garners no response and so Maedhros uses the most powerful weapon in his arsenal. “If you help me, I’ll make you honey pancakes.”
It takes only a moment for the indecision to clear from Fingon’s eyes.
2.
“Anyway,” Cantasië is frowning, “it’s depressing to think about your grandmother on what is supposed to be a happy day.”
Maglor hums something and lies back to stare at the sky. There are a few clouds up there that look almost soft to the touch.
“That cloud looks a bit like a cat,” he says, gesturing vaguely upward.
“Really?” Cantasië wades through the water with a splash and drops down beside him. “Where?”
Maglor points a bit more definitely. “Just there.”
She cocks her head. “No, it’s more like a rabbit.”
“It’s a cloud,” Daeron says. “It doesn’t look like anything!”
Cantasië sits up sharply. “Oh that’s just too far!”
Maglor covers his mouth to hide a laugh as Cantasië swings herself back up to her feet and challenges Daeron to a duel.
3.
There’s only Crinthammos now who could tell him if what he remembers is the truth and she is with whatever is left of her people – across the sea, perhaps, or more likely faded from memory until the breaking of the world.
Caranthir sighs.
Niphredilien’s naming he can remember a lot clearer. It had just been him: he had spent three days making a blanket from what remained of the craft supplies in his bag, and when he’d stood in the water with her in his arms, she’d been wrapped in the same purples and silvers as his sister.
“Sweet heavens, look at me getting all sentimental,” Caranthir laughs, a little bitterly, to himself. “Don’t get like me, nettë.”
The baby sleeps on, uncaring as her brother ties off the end of a gold thread, cutting it down and tucking it away.

Erien and Finbor are actually just Haldir and Orodlin in disguise.
Finrod: “Your oaths of faith you may break, but I must hold my bond!”
Orodreth: “So, does that come with a curse, or.....?”
Finrod: “yeah fingon’s gonna steal all your kids lol”

Several years after the events that led to his imprisonment, a mysterious woman shows up with the intent of setting Melkor free. A lawyer, an old friend? Perhaps even a lover? Thuringwethil isn't entirely sure, but she does know one thing: she isn't going to be the one to get in her way. In fact, it seems about time for her to disappoint the people who love her most some more, so she might actually help her.
Meanwhile, twins Elros and Elrond start their journey into academia together. Moving two hours away from home into a place that seems like a completely new world is a pretty big shift, but they're confident that, with perseverance, they can handle it just fine. That is, until one of them witnesses an exchange that they shouldn't have and is dragged into something a whole lot more stressful than weekly lab work.
The crimes of the fathers rise to confront the descendants of the sons, and very few of said descendants are old enough to know better than to let themselves get swept up in the raging rapids of the truth. Or, in other words: sometimes actions DO have consequences.

In one version of the legendarium, Fingon had a wife and two children while in beleriand, a daughter Erien and a son Finbor.
Looking up the translation of their names, I must admit I always found the name Erien a rather odd one. Mostly because one of its translations is "Lonely maiden". Why would Fingon name his child "Lonely maiden"?
But then I looked back at it and realized that maybe it wasn't supposed to be translated as lonely, but connect to the name of Eru, referring rather to divinity and holiness than loneliness and solitude. Also, Fingon's mother's name is Anaire which means "holiness". Does this mean I headcanon that Fingon named his daughter Erien as a kind of tribute to his mother? Yes. Yes I do.

children of fingon and maedhros ✷ finbór and elwen ✷ for @mad-hermit
Finbór and Elwen were the twin children of Fingon and Maedhros, born in the aftermath of the Nírnaeth Arnœdiad. They were raised mostly by their elder sister Amaurëa, as Fingon was dead and Maedhros caught up in the pull of the Oath; Finbór became particularly attached to her, while Elwen attempted to draw their father out of his grief. On the eve of the Second Kinslaying, Finbór and Amaurëa rebuked the sons of Fëanor and fled to the Havens of Sirion, but Elwen would not follow, clinging loyally to Maedhros. Though Amaurëa and Finbór would reunite with their siblings Ereinion and Erien by the sea, Elwen remained with her father throughout the War of Wrath, and was devastated by death. Only then did she reconcile with her siblings, though her strongest new connection was with her cousin Celebrimbor, whom she followed to Eregion, becoming an alchemist. Finbór joined the people of Oropher as a hunter and went with him to Eryn Galen, where he met and fell in love with a Silvan elf alternately called Ewenor and Eweneth, depending on the shifting of their spirit between ellon and elleth. Though they were never as close as some twins were, Finbór still felt when Elwen died, slain in the sack of Ost-in-Edhil, and his grief was great. In time, Ewenor grew curious of what lay in the West, and so for their sake Finbór agreed to sail to Valinor, reuniting with his sister Amaurëa along the way. Together they made the journey across the Sea, and in time his family would be made whole once more, giving him the opportunity to introduce Eweneth to his beloved kindred.

Sometimes Finbor looks at his reflection and wonders when he’ll stop being a disappointment to his family. His mother tells him that she’s proud of him, but how can that be? He has nothing; no military achievements, no acts of valor, no words of diplomacy. Nothing but his name and even that feels like a burden at times.
Sometimes Gil-galad looks at the crown his father and grandfather wore and he feels the weight of it crashing down on his shoulders. Heaviest is the burden of he who wears it and he wonders how his father and grandfather could carry that burden day after day. One day he’ll crack and he hopes it won’t be in front of his people.
Sometimes Erien looks at the graves — the empty graves — of her brothers and rage fills her at the cruelty of the world. At some point anger becomes all that she is and not even seeing the torn throats of her enemies can soothe it. Anger is her sword and shield, her only protection against the pain and loneliness.
