Let's talk royalties...
Good morning! Who's ready for some infuriating numbers about audiobook sales?
In December I released His Secret Illuminations as an audiobook, after over six months of production that I paid for out of pocket. I released it on my website, through Findaway Voices, and on Audible. We're going to talk about the last one.
I just got my Audible earnings report and payout for the December sales of said audiobook. I sold 15 copies & made $186.98 in net sales. Sounds pretty good, right?
Hahahaha, it only sounds good. My actual royalties were $46.75. All the rest of that money went into Amazon's pockets.
I knew my Audible royalties would be pathetic going in, but I made the personal and political choice to do a non-exclusive release through Audible so I could sell my book elsewhere and do my tiny part to break their monopoly. (A non-exclusive release through Audible means I make 25% of the cover price in royalties instead of 40%.) I couldn't not release this book on Audible for the same reasons I couldn't not release the paperback and ebooks on Amazon: That's where people buy books. They own the market, and it sucks!
I understand why people buy through Audible, and I'm not blaming the consumer... But if those 15 sales had happened through my website? I would have made $348.45. Can you see what a difference that is for a self-published author who's working toward going full-time with writing? Can you see how that's better compensation for someone who has to do every single part of the process herself?
I would like to once again say, with my whole chest: Fuck Audible.
Anyway, here's my website if you want it: https://scarlettgaleauthor.com/shop

CBC article on girl math lmfaoooooooo
although i guess they have a point, like, talking about your financial rationale is not necessarily a bad thing
one of the problems with financial literacy, though, is that people get their financial education from, like... random completely unqualified people like their friends and relatives, and may be led astray
honestly i really have not been following this like "girl math" "girl dinner" thing, i am intrigued by Rowan Ellis' video on the topic asserting that it's infantalizing like.... i wanna watch it to see what she actually has to say about the matter because
people finding things difficult or struggling is not necessarily infantalizing ? regardless of whether they're girls.
the fact of the matter is, financial literacy is hard for a number of reasons, and it's not just girls that struggle with money or understanding the economic system, but women might still be able to identify the reasons they struggle with it may be because they're barred from it more often, and that there is an extremely long history of men being in control of financials to the point women were not allowed to manage money in somewhat recent history. acting like we have just completely shaken this off and it's not still impacting our attitudes and perceptions towards money is like, silly, so blaming women for being stressed out or making jokes about not understanding things is like. not that nice i guess?
still. all of us could benefit from learning more about real financial management, from reputable sources. i don't LIKE our economic system, i don't like the fact that you basically need to invest or else your money has less value over time, but, that is the reality we have to live in. so learning about it, like many of us have learned about capitalism and it's impacts on our attitudes towards work, is still very important.
talking about our purchases, and money habits, is not inherently a bad thing. talking more about money, how much you make, etc. can help people become less fearful about money, and lessen stigma around it, which may in turn encourage them to reach out when they need help.
anyway. I recommend YNAB for budgeting lol

I checked and redid my budgeting again to prepare for what is likely going to be a frosty af winter with brutal and cruel utility bills, and anyway, I am... okay. But I probably would have been *more* okay if I had not done Something Bright this year and had instead done something that the more traditional m/m audiences want.
.... yeah there is a little dig in there with "more traditional m/m audiences"... yeah you know who it is aimed at.
I love Mattin and Arden and Mil, but I wrote them largely for that audience, which was a bit cynical of me, and I am likely going to have to do something like that again before I do anything else weird or experimental or... you know. Me.
Also a bit of a disappointment that people are not super into Ravenous/the Ring verse I guess without obvious monsterfucking. Which is not a judgment on monsterfuckers, more just me flailing around looking for another series to compete with the Beings and not finding one. (People like Familiar Spirits, but that like does not come close to the Beings love, which is either because of werewolves or dragons or because of.. idk... all the boning in Little Wolf. Yeah I said boning. Suck it, Nathaniel. (suck the boooone))
That is my year in review, a little early. But maybe I can get A Little Blessing out a little earlier, late November? And then instead of taking time off... hustle out something for January. idk.

What's your dream job?
Tbh, the job I have now.
I'd say I lucked into it, but I have busted my ass and literally broken my back for my career and my hard work has finally started to pay off.
As most already know, I broke my back digging trench on a job for an underground line, 4 years into being a plumber. I'm still in the Plumbing industry, but have moved up to being a Project Coordinator (more office work than labour) and I'm starting school in a month for business financials so that I can continue to grow with the company.
Thank you for this ask, anon! It made me very happy to look back on my growth and how different my career goals are now that I've grown. I am lucky and very proud of myself!

Tonight I went and got apps for all the major fast food places and I don’t know why I never did that before because it’s so convenient.
I also paid my bills. I really thought we’d get a bonus but we didn’t get no bonus and I’m still paying shit off on my credit cards.
Im getting like $275 back in taxes too :/
I was really hoping for that break to catch up Pat shit off but like and such as like. So anyway February is going to be a lean month for getting my debt to limit ratio to 30% across the board’t.

obviously people steal things from other people it's one of the oldest tricks in the book but it still always surprises me to learn that people plagiarise because my introduction to the concept was basically being told that if i ever plagiarised anything i would be executed by firing squad and my head would be removed and displayed on a spike outside the walls of the hallowed academic institution i was attending as a warning to others
