Lea’s advent calendar day 10 – First Christmas as a Family

December 24th, 1989

Eddie and you have been dating since 1985, Eddie’s second senior year and your junior year. You and Eddie have lived the perfect idyll for 4 years now. At first, when you went to California for your studies, Eddie didn’t follow you as he was offered a job at Hawkins’ garage, and he knew that with his resume and past he would never get a job in California. But after 6 months of only seeing you once a month, Eddie couldn’t handle missing you anymore. Yes, you used to call for hours every single day, yes you sent letters to each other. And of course, you came back to Hawkins one weekend a month only to see Eddie, but the distance was too much, and Eddie left everything to join you. When he arrived, you moved out from your dorm and the two of you started renting a one-bedroom apartment.

During your third year of studies, in February 1989, you found out that you were pregnant. Right after you found out, Eddie proposed and promised to never be like his old man. He promised to always be by your side and in your child’s life. Two month before your baby’s birth, Eddie and you rented a two bedroom apartment to have more space as well as a room dedicated to your baby. You gave birth to a beautiful daughter you named Lizzie, after Eddie’s late mom. Your girl was born on November 15th, 1989, and so this will be her first Christmas. She already has her father’s eyes and your “cute” little nose as Eddie likes to call it. Lizzie is definitely a Daddy’s girl.

For your first Christmas as a family, you wanted everything to be perfect, and even if she’s only a month old, you didn’t want to your daughter to be affected by your financial struggles. Eddie currently works at the auto shop in the corner of your street, but as you’re still studying you have no income. Nonetheless, you wanted to split the Christmas bill in two, no matter how much Eddie insisted that he could cover most of it. So, you used all of your spare money to decorate the house and buy your daughter and your fiancé the best gifts ever. You want everything to be perfect for your little bean as you like to call your daughter.

You’re currently cooking Christmas Eve’s dinner while Eddie went to the airport to pick up Wayne.

While the turkey is in the oven, you’re making the cranberry sauce. You’re usually not much of a cook, but as Eddie is even worse than you, you both decided that you would be the one giving it a try, and it didn’t turn out so bad, so far. Once the cranberry sauce was made you started cooking some mashed potatoes and the green beans.

Eddie and Wayne arrived just as the turkey was finished cooking. You put it all on the kitchen counter, pick up your daughter in her crib and go into the hallways to great Wayne.

Eddie comes in first, followed by his uncle. It is the first time ever that “Grandpa Wayne” will meet Lizzie, Eddie already sent pictures and a VHS with videos of her, but Wayne never met her in real life.

“Hi Wayne!” You say while cradling your daughter.

“Wanna hold her Grandpa?” Eddie says with a smile, after kissing his daughter’s forehead. You can see that Wayne has teary eyes when he nods. You delicately hand her to her Grandpa, and Wayne really gently take her into his arms, he starts rocking back and forth all the while examining her small face and features, he smiles at her while addressing to Eddie.

“She looks like you when you were a baby. Has her mom’s nose though” Wayne says fondly.

You all head to the living room, the three of you sit around the table and Eddie is the one holding your daughter while you go to the kitchen to bring the starters. You put the smoked salmon toast on the table and all start to eat. Wayne tells you a lot of anecdotes about Eddie when he was a baby. Eddie gives you Lizzie to hold while he brings the turkey, mashed potatoes, and green beans on the table. You all eat in a cozy atmosphere. Eddie and you share small anecdotes that happened during the pregnancy and Lizzie’s first month. You’re really embarrassed when Eddie tells Wayne how you thought you had peed yourself when your water broke. Thank god Wayne answered. “Son, how do you want her to know what it is when she’s never experienced it?”. Eddie did shut up after that. When Lizzie starts getting a bit fussy, you excuse yourself and go to your bedroom to breastfeed her.

Meanwhile, Eddie excuses himself, take the gifts from your bedroom and put them under the tree.

When he comes back Wayne pats Eddie’s back. “’m proud of you son. You’ve got a lovely fiancé and the cutest daughter on earth. Just don’t mess it all up.” Wayne is stern at the end. Deep down, he knows Eddie isn’t like his old man, but he does feel the need to remind Eddie that he is lucky to have this family.

“I won’t Wayne, I swear on my life. I love them, so much.” Eddie answers. “Can I ask you a question though?”

“Go ahead son.” Wayne answers.

“How did you find out how to raise me?” Eddie asks.

“Son, you and yn are gonna make mistakes, for sure. What’s Important is how hard we try. I probably wasn’t the perfect paternal figure, but I tried my best and look at you now. ‘m really proud of you Eds.” Wayne tells him.

When you come back, Lizzie nuzzled up against you, Eddie says.

“Okay! Presents time!”. He takes the biggest gift and hand it to you. This is from me to our daughter. Eddie tells you.

“Eds… we said we’d share the cost for all of her gifts…” you protest.

“Baby, I really wanted this for her, and it’s a bit for you as well.” Eddie answers.

You give him your daughter and open the gift to see a beautiful baby swing chair.

“Eddie… This is too much...” you say, eyes wet with tears.

“The best one for my amazing daughter.” Eddie says, putting her in the baby swing chair.

Eddie and you give Wayne his gift, a new denim jacket and Wayne gifted the two of you concert tickets to go see Dio in San Jose in October 1990.

You both look at Wayne, shocked by the gift. “This is too much…” you say.

“What about Lizzie?” Eddie says, teary eyed by the thoughtful gift.

“I’ll babysit her, if you’re okay with that.”

You both hug Wayne before exchanging your gifts. Eddie gifted you a new record player and you gifted him new guitar picks as well as a new amp. Eddie gasps.

“Baby… this is too much…” He says, voice choked up with emotion.

“It is what you deserve.” You tell him. He kisses you.

Wayne also gifted a Teddy bear to little Lizzie.

You spend the rest of the night unwrapping the other gifts you bought for your daughter, eating Christmas cookies, and talking amongst yourselves.

This was your first Christmas as a family, and it was the best one you’d ever had.

Twin Peaks Extended Media

Whether it is for the lack of knowledge in mainstream Twin Peaks spaces regarding them or how some of these things are hard to get, the extended media of Twin Peaks but especially the books are constantly overlooked and ignored for various reasons.

I had done an (incomplete) index of it that blew up in my original account, and I had redone it (but as a more extensive guide that also included the order to watch the show). However, I changed my mind and decided to redo it, since the third time's a charm, right?

Most of these things include spoilers of the three seasons and the movie, so watch and read at your own risk.

AUDIOBOOKS AND COOPER'S TWIN PEAKS TAPES

The audiobooks consist of Laura's diary, the last two books narrated by cast members of the show, while Cooper's tapes were done by Kyle MacLachlan around the time the show was created, and (believe it or not) earned him a Grammy nomination for it.

Laura Palmer’s Diary (narrated by Sheryl Lee).

Diane: The Twin Peaks Tapes by Agent Cooper (narrated by Kyle MacLachlan).

The Secret History of Twin Peaks (narrated by Mark Frost, Len Cariou, Michael Horse, Mat Hostetler, Amy Shiels, Chris Mulkey, David Patrick Kelly, Robert Knepper, Kyle MacLachlan and James Morrison).

The Final Dossier (narrated by Annie Wersching).

BOOKS AND TEXT

Possibly the most overlooked section in Twin Peaks media. Mostly because some fanboys wrongfully think that because David Lynch didn't write them, it doesn't add to the story and canon, which is a wrong thing to say since these books were written by people involved in the show. Especifically, the writers wrote them and were given notes by Frost and Lynch.

The Secret History and The Final Dossier contain spoilers for the three seasons, so read them at your own discretion.

(*) Laura's diary and Cooper's autobiography are the only texts available in Glastonberry Grove. My recommendation is to copy the text and paste it on a google document, since the PDF has the pages ordered in a way you can later print it and build the book on your own.

The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer (written by Jennifer Lynch)*: Laura's diary is written on the day of her 12th birthday, and ends on February the 23rd, 1989. The book (like Cooper's) is very graphic since Laura has to constantly face BOB in her dreams and in real life, and struggles with how others perceive her as well as harm herself in order to avoid BOB hurting the ones she loves. It does not include the missing pages of her diary.

Glastonberry Grove PDF + Text

Twin Peaks: Access Guide to The Town (by Gregg Almquist, Tricia Brock, Robert Engels, Lise Friedman and Harley Peyton with David Lynch, Mark Frost and Richard Saul Wurman): It's the hardest book to get from the books that were released in the nineties. The Access Guide is somewhat of a predecessor of The Secret History, since it includes some of the origins of Twin Peaks. However, the Access Guide also includes newspaper articles, a donuts recipe, and more fun stuff!

The Autobiography of Special Agent Dale Cooper: My Life, My Tapes (written by Scott Frost)*: Cooper's autobiography starts in 1967 and ends on February the 24th, 1989. It featured short interviews from Cooper's friends and other people connected to him and transcripts from his tapes. Like Laura's, Cooper experiences tons of horrifying and sad things, from sexual abuse to murder so reader discretion is advised.

Glastonberry Grove PDF + Text

The Secret History of Twin Peaks (written by Mark Frost): A dossier of Garland Briggs that narrates the history of the town as well as the families that ahve stayed there, alongside relationships in the FBI, it includes letters, menus, classified FBI documents, drawings, fragments of books with notes done by Agent Tamara "Tammy" Preston.

MISCELLANEOUS

Blue Velvet (dir. David Lynch, 1986): Some could say this is the predecessor of Twin Peaks, considering Jeffrey Beaumont (Kyle MacLachlan), Sandy Williams (Laura Dern) and Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper) are considered prototypes for Cooper, Diane and BOB by Dern, Lynch and MacLachlan. Set in a 50s ambiented town in North Carolina in 1984, Blue Velvet is about a 21 year old college dropout named Jeffrey Beaumont who finds an ear on his way home after visiting his hospitalized father. The movie includes three, very graphic scenes, so watch it at your own risk.

Mulholland Drive (dir. David Lynch, 2001): Originally going to be an Audrey Horne spin-off for TV, Mulholland Drive is considered to be one of the best films done in history and the best of David Lynch's filmography by many alongside Blue Velvet, Fire Walk With Me and Lost Highway. After Rita (Laura Harring) survives a car accident on Mulholland Drive but suffers mass amnesia, she meets a up-and-coming star Diane (Naomi Watts) who's deeply intrigued about Rita's past, and together, try to solve the mystery of her past.

Wrapped in Plastic Magazine: Released for the first time in October of 1992, Wrapped in Plastic Magazine is the most recognizable out of the Twin Peaks related magazines that exist since the start of the show. The issues include essays, theories and even interviews to the stars as well as issues dedicated to other shows and movies like The X-Files!

MUSIC

Music is also one of the most important things in the show (and also one of the best things), as it sets the mood and the personality of each character without having to say anything.

In Glastonberry Grove, you can find the music notations of Angelo Badalamenti for Laura’s theme, the music from the intro (also known as the Falling instrumental), Into The Night, Falling, Dance of the Dream Man, Audrey’s Dance and more.

Floating Into The Night (All of the songs but Mysteries of Love, I Float Alone, The Swan, Floating and I Remember are featured in the show) by Julee Cruise.

Invitation to Love: In the show, Lucy, Nadine and other characters are obsessed with an exaggerated soap opera named “Invitation to Love”. You can see the whole show (16 minutes) here! The band Her’s named their album “Invitation To Her’s” after this parody.

All the Pacific Rim Character Birthdays I Could Find

...And by "all," I mean I will be writing down character birthdays from all the sources I can find, some of which contradict each other! It definitely sheds some insight into how ideas changed during development, and I think it shows some evidence that not everyone was always up to date - for example, Mako and Raleigh's Drift Space bios seem to be up to date, but Newt's is clearly an older version, as indicated by his age being given as 45 rather than 35.

The Murder of Kimberly Leach

Kimberly Diane Leach was a 12-year-old schoolgirl, she was in the seventh grade. Kimberly, Kim to her friends, was described as a shy girl who worked hard at school.

On 8th February 1978, Kimberly was excited as her mother had said that afternoon she would take Kimberly shopping for a dress to wear to the upcoming Valentine’s ball. She arrived at school and ate doughnuts with her friend and went to her homeroom before leaving to go to her first class, PE. While in the homeroom Kimberly forgot her purse so went back to get it, she returned to the homeroom, picked up the purse and left, making her way back across campus- she never made it back to her lesson. Kimberly’s teacher assumed Kimberly had just gone to her second class and gave her books to her friend to put in her locker. Kimberly failed to show up at any of her classes that day, and her teachers grew worried and began searching for her. By 5pm when there was still no sign of Kimberly, the police were called.

Kimberly’s friends knew something was wrong immediately, they described how Kimberly never skipped class and was a shy girl who was unlikely to speak to strangers or go anywhere on her own. A witness had seen a girl walking towards a white van with a man he had assumed was her father, the man had brown hair and was clean-shaven and the girl matched Kimberly’s description down to the number on her sports jersey, the girl had looked unhappy but was not resisting. A schoolchild had also seen a slim man in his mid-thirties with brown hair standing near the school. Over 65 witnesses had seen this man in the vicinity of the school Kimberly attended.

In April 1978, about 2 months after Kimberly had gone missing her body was found in a pig shed wooded area, she had been raped and had lacerations to her neck.

Before Kimberly was found, Ted Bundy, a notorious serial killer and wanted fugitive was found when pulled over for a traffic violation. He had recently escaped from prison and was wanted for a string of recent murders of young women. Officers questioned him about Kimberly’s disappearance which he initially denied despite overwhelming evidence including fibres from the jacket he was wearing when arrested being found on her body.

In 1980, Bundy went on trial for the kidnap and murder of Kimberly Leach. He had previously been convicted for the murders of two sorority girls, Lisa Levy and Margaret Bowman, in the infamous Chi Omega attacks. During the trial for Kimberly’s murder, Bundy acted as his own council and asked Carole Ann Boone to marry him. He was found guilty and Bundy received a third death sentence for the murder of Kimberly Leach.

On 24th January 1989, Bundy was executed by electric chair at Florida State Prison. It is believed that Kimberly was his last victim.

The Wednesday Strangler

The Wednesday Strangler is a suspected unidentified serial killer who operated in Japan from 1975 to 1989. The serial killer is thought to be responsible for seven murders (which are also referred to as the Saga women murders) and got the nickname due to six of the seven victims disappearing on a Wednesday. As of now, the seven murders remain unsolved and The Wednesday Strangler is currently unidentified.

27th August 1975 (Wednesday) – ‘Y’ A 12-year-old girl had been home alone in the evening when she disappeared. The girl, commonly referred to as ‘Y’, usually spent her evenings studying at the bar her mother ran but had been home alone on this night. When her family returned to the house they found the television still on and the shoes the girl had worn that day were still at the house. The daughter of the neighbours next door would tell law enforcement she saw an unidentified man pushing the girl into his vehicle.

12th April 1980 (Saturday) – ‘H’ A 20-year-old woman living in Shiroishi had been home alone when she disappeared on the 12th of April in 1980, notably under similar circumstances as the first victim. Commonly referred to as ‘H’, the young woman had attempted suicide before and had told people in her life that she was going to attempt again once she turned 20. ‘H’ had turned 20 just one day before her disappearance. On the 16th of April, just four days after H had gone missing, her father received a letter stating how his daughter will probably not return home and that they hope he (the father) suffers too. H’s father later received multiple phone calls telling him not to go on to TV programme to discuss his daughter’s disappearance and not to show any photographs of H. ‘H’ is the only victim on the list to have gone missing on a day other than Wednesday. 24th or 27th June 1980 Two bodies were discovered in a septic tank next to a primary school in Shiroishi. The bodies were that of ‘Y’, the 12-year-old girl who had disappeared five years earlier, and ‘H’, the 20-year-old woman who had disappeared a few months earlier in April. According to various reports, the septic tanks had been filled with stones. The bodies were too badly decomposed to give an accurate cause of death. *I’m unsure if both bodies were found on the same day at the same time or if the confusion around the dates has arisen due to ‘H’ being found first, on the 24th of June, and ‘Y’ then being found on the 27th of June. A man would later be arrested on suspicion of committing these two murders but he was later released without charge due to insufficient evidence. In any case, there are rumours of the links between this man and the two victims, some claiming the man frequented the bar which Y’s mother worked at and another rumour claiming he had been dating ‘H’. Just to reiterate, these are rumours and not definitive facts.

7th October 1981 (Wednesday) A 27-year-old woman living in Shiroishi was last spotted by a colleague talking to a man who was approximately in his 30’s and sat in a car. This is the last known sighting of the third victim alive. Allegedly, the third victim had missed four days of work prior to her disappearance and had then told people she was caring for her unwell mother. Her body was found on the 21st of October 1981, two weeks after she was last seen, in an empty lot. There were no signs of sexual abuse and the cause of death was ruled as strangulation with a power cord.

17th February 1982 (Wednesday) – ‘A’ An 11-year-old girl, referred to as ‘A’, was walking home from school when she was strangled to death in Kitagata. Her body was found nude from the waist down and her school bag still strapped to her back. Several witnesses later came forward to report a man in the area, who had been driving a white car, had attempted to abduct them on the same day as A’s disappearance. One primary school student had been carried away by an unknown man but was let go because of her crying and screaming.

8th July 1987 (Wednesday) – ‘H’ A 48-year-old woman, referred to as ‘H’, disappeared after receiving a phone call that visibly upset her. The fourth victim had been eating with her mother and son when she received the phone call. She went on to tell her mother that she had to leave to give a ride to a friend but told her son she had to leave to go for dinner with a friend. At some point after her disappearance, H’s car was located in the carpark of a bowling alley. ‘H’ had worked at the same place as the 27-year-old who had been found strangled to death six years prior.

7th December 1988 (Wednesday) – ‘N’ A 50-year-old woman disappeared in Kitagata after leaving her house to play volleyball, a ten-minute walk away from her house. Commonly referred to as ‘N’, she usually made this walk with a friend, but on this day the friend wasn’t attending and so ‘N’ took the walk alone. Witness reports state that ‘N’ was seen speaking with a woman sitting in a car but law enforcement has never been able to identify the woman. One week after ‘N’ went missing, her husband received a phone call that was recorded by a police officer who was investigating the disappearance of ‘N’. There’s a transcript of the phone call which I’m going to include below, though I’m not 100% sure that this is a word-for-word translation. Still, it does give you an idea of the type of phone call it was. Mr. N: Hello, this is Nakajima.

Unknown caller: Your wife was found, wasn’t she?

Mr. N: Huh?

Unknown caller: That’s nice.

Mr. N: Just where in the world was she found?

Unknown caller: Wasn’t it in Yakigome? (slight pause)

Mr. N: Who is this speaking?

Unknown caller: A person you know.

25th January 1989 (Wednesday) – ‘Y’ A 37-year-old woman disappeared after walking home from a night out with a friend. She is often referred to as ‘Y’, but there is little other information available regarding her disappearance. 27th January 1989 The bodies of ‘H’, ‘N’, and ‘Y’ are found together located at the bottom of a cliff at Kitagata Otoge. All three causes of death were determined to be strangulation. These final three murders would go on to be known as the “Kitagata affair,” as all seven murders on this timeline occurred in a 20-kilometer radius of the Saga Prefecture.

My Personal little timeline I kept is below.

Obviously no harm or shade is meant to anyone in this timeline. I always thought they would be an epic love story, so it's something I made a little hobby out of watching. It has been a fascinating puzzle and given the fact they both love some easter eggs, it's been a fun puzzle.

If anything is incorrect, let me know. It been a work in progress for a long time, so some may be off a touch.

This ends around October of last year. When we could comfortably assume things were DONE DONE.

I may add additional items for items that happened during SATVB that may have been linked to Taylor.

Ted Bundy

This week's blog is on the subject of Ted Bundy. He is a pretty well known American serial killer. Ted Bundy was an active killer in the locations of Washington, Oregon, Utah and Florida in the years of 1974 to 1978. He was born November 24 1946, in Burlington, Vermont. And he died on the 24th of January 1989, in the Florida state prison by electric chair. Bundy is believed to have killed at least 30 women (mostly young women) but the number is not really exact and it could be way higher. It is believed that his first victim was Lynda Ann Healy after she had mysteriously vanished in 1974. Hers and many other remains were found in 1975 on Taylor mountain. Now how did Bundy get his victims? Well as a ‘’good looking guy’’ (for the 70s at least) he was able to lure them alone near his car. He would put a sling on his arm and ask them for help to put something in his car. What the victims didn't know was that the door on the other side was locked from the inside and the only way out was going through Bundy. Bundy would then attack and sexually assault them before killing them. He would usually take their body’s and hide them in the woods and then later perform sexual acts on them. Now yes, Ted Bundy killed many people and he was a bad man, but what was really interesting about him, was that he was really smart and he used it to his advantage. In the Pitkin County Courthouse, situated in Aspen, Colorado, Ted had elected to represent himself on the 7th of June 1977. That meant that during the court he did not need to wear shackles or handcuffs. During one of the recesses, he asked if he could be allowed to visit the library to research for his defense. Yes they let one of the most dangerous men at the time go alone to the library. That is when behind a bookcase he opens a window and jumps out. And with a sprained ankle he ran. He ran for 6 days, breaking into homes to steal food and clothes. He was apprehended on June 13, 1977, after his fatigue got the best of him and his veering car got the attention of a patroller. The second time Bundy escaped was in jail on December 30, 1977. He had somehow managed to get his hands on a floor plan and a hacksaw blade. (It is still unknown how he acquired those things.) With the hacksaw he slowly chipped away at the ceiling until he could fit through the space above. While most of the staff was on holiday break, he took that opportunity to create a makeshift body with books and files to put under the sheets. He then crawled through the hole he made and broke through the floor above which led to the chief jailor's apartment. By the time the guards realized he was gone, Bundy was hopping on a plane to chicago. He was apprehended in February of 1978, this time for good. That is all about Ted Bundy that I have.
